University of Wyoming Outreach School Eastern Regional Center readies for Fall 2011 TORRINGTON, Wyo., — Registration is in progress for University of Wyoming Fall 2011 outreach credit classes that begin August 22. The mix of students enrolled in mediated classes ranges from undergraduate students majoring in criminal justice, nursing, social science, and psychology to graduate students enrolled in master’s, certificate, and endorsement programs. Online UW students run the gamut of all outreach credit program offerings. At this time, the fall headcount for the eastern region is 50 of which 14 are attending class in Torrington and/or online. The remaining 26 are scattered among remote sites within the region. Last year the UW Eastern Regional Center opened a second location at the Lincoln Community Complex in Torrington. The LCC location provides the university with 1,800 square feet of space comprising a reception area, office, two audio teleconference classrooms, one outreach video network room for conference and class delivery, a student computer lab and testing room, and a student lounge. This downtown location gives the university an opportunity to grow current distance programs and to offer future new programs in the region. Students, introduced to the second location during its first year, have commented positively on the sense of space and light, the availability of wireless Internet, and a lounge in which to relax and mentally prepare before taking exams. In a move to serve the Goshen County community, classrooms are open by arrangement during normal working hours for local groups and entities to meet and have workshops. This spring the facility was used by the Wyoming
Department of Agriculture, Lions Club, and Department of Family Services staff participating in an exercise program. “The initiative to obtain a second location in Torrington was four years in the making,” said Janet Bass, ERC academic coordinator. In 2006 the UW Outreach School wrote a letter in support of the City of Torrington’s Wyoming Business Council grant application to remodel the old Lincoln School into a community facility. At that time the university expressed its interest in partnering with the city for office space. “This downtown university presence contributes to a sense of community and identity,” Bass said. Through its division of Outreach Credit Programs, the Outreach School delivers nine undergraduate degrees, 11 graduate degrees, seven certificate programs, six endorsement programs, and a minor in Women’s Studies throughout the state and beyond. Classes, which normally run from 4 to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, take place at both the LCC and Eastern Wyoming College campus locations. Wyoming Public Media, another division of the Outreach School, delivers three radio streams to residents of Wyoming and listeners around the world with Internet streaming, podcasts, and Web information services via wyomingpublicmedia.net. WPM’s primary network Wyoming Public Radio has been serving Wyoming for more than 40 years. In Torrington WPR can be heard at 89.9 FM. The Eastern Regional Center, one of six UW outreach centers around the state of Wyoming, serves Converse, Goshen, Niobrara, and Weston Counties as well as western Nebraska. For information about distance programs, call 307-532-8204 or e-mail jbass@uwyo.edu.

Nebraska Methodist College OMAHA — One of the most important decisions a high school senior will ever make is where to attend college. Every year, many of these students will choose to attend Nebraska Methodist College for the very same reason they say they want to leave cities like Scottsbluff and Gering, the small-town environment. For years, high school seniors have packed their bags and headed for Omaha with the small-town qualities of Nebraska Methodist College in mind. With an enrollment of nearly 800 students and a student-to-faculty ratio of
10-to-1, the college is small enough to care about the individual. Small class sizes allow for individualized attention, hands-on clinic experience in the first year, a comprehensive mentoring program and extracurricular opportunities. However, these students have also come to know Nebraska Methodist College as a premier health professions institution with 13 distinctive professional programs taught by a dedicated, talented and c a r i n g faculty. The college is large enough to provide fully accredited nursing
and allied health programs, complete preparation for national certification exams, extensive hands-on clinical experience and instruction in the human anatomy/cadaver lab. Popular degree programs in the allied health arena include respiratory care, radiologic technology, sonography, physical therapist assistant, surgical technology and medical assistant. For nursing both a traditional BSN and an accelerated BSN program are available. The college’s association with Methodist Health System provides stu-

Nebraska Wesleyan University LINCOLN — Nebraska Wesleyan University is an honors quality liberal arts institution dedicated to academic excellence in an environment of Christian concern. Its main campus in Lincoln was founded in 1887. NWU offers 52 majors, 43 minors and three master’s degree programs, as well as programming for working adults in a variety of fields. Nebraska Wesleyan’s total enrollment of 2,100 students includes approximately 500 graduate students and working adults. Experiential learning sets NWU students apart. Ask admissions counselors at a dozen small Midwestern colleges: What makes your school different from the rest? Again and again, they will point to the personal attention their professors give students. That attention matters. (If you’ve ever sat in a 250-student lecture hall and tried to ask a question, you know just how much it matters.) But the truth is you’ll find personal attention at any small college. That’s not what distinguishes one small school from another. What sets Nebraska Wesleyan University apart is what that personal attention will build for you. At NWU, you’ll do more than take classes. NWU professors will help you land internships. You’ll have opportunities to conduct collaborative research one-on-one with faculty or perform on stage your first year. Service learning projects can help
you make a difference all over the world. Simply put, you’ll grow at NWU through meaningful experiences catered to your interests and goals. “The opportunities begin immediately at NWU,” says James Hesse, of St. Louis, Mo. “I’m a theatre major. I was onstage my first semester. Experience will teach you things a classroom can’t. At Nebraska Wesleyan, you’re not just studying it. You’re doing it,” Hesse added. When personal attention comes paired with Nebraska Wesleyan University’s relentless emphasis on service and experiential learning, the results for students are powerful. Nebraska Wesleyan University is consistently a top producer of Fulbright and Truman scholars. NWU ranks 12th in the nation‹regardless of division with 109 Academic AllAmerica Awards. (That’s as many UCLA!) And Nebraska Wesleyan enjoys outstanding success placing students in top graduate programs in fields including medicine, engineering, theatre, political science and law. NWU even offers graduate programs in forensic science, nursing and historical studies. You deserve more than just a small classroom. You deserve to be in your element. Come see what makes Nebraska Wesleyan University an excellent place to grow. Schedule your campus visit in Lincoln at admissions.nebrwesleyan.edu/rsvp.
