Gonski cut report fear BY MICHELLE HERBISON TORQUAY'S Catholic school could cut teacher numbers or increase class sizes as last-resort responses to potential funding cuts, its principal has told the Independent. Pauline Audley was responding to reports this week of “leaked” information that Federal Government's Gonski review could reduce funding to St Therese Catholic School by $183,000. The Government has yet to announce its response to the review, released last year. Ms Audley said losing $183,000 in funding would be “very bad”. The school would be forced to “look creatively” at absorbing any decrease in funding but cutting teachers or increasing class sizes would be last resorts, she said. “We have global budgeting that allows us to look at budgets very independently of other schools. We would not look at salaries because we believe teacher quality is very important. “Something we had planned to do over 12 months might take over two or three years to invest

What nonsense: Darren Cheeseman. but the direct impacts on children would be minimised as much as possible.” Ms Audrey said St Therese had 430 students and growing as the town boomed. The school provided about 35 jobs including part-time and administration staff. Federal Liberal candidate for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said a third of Australian schools would lose funding, according to the leaked list. “Parents will pay more or class sizes will rise as funding is cut to

over 3200 government, catholic and independent schools across Australia,” she said. “Labor has been trumpeting the Gonski review and its call for $5 billion in extra funding despite the fact the Government does not have an additional $5 billion a year to spend on schools.” Ms Henderson said the coalition's policy was to increase funding by six per cent annually. Labor Member for Corangamite Darren Cheeseman called the leaked figures “absolute nonsense”. “They don’t reflect what the Government will be doing. No school will lose money. “We will see additional money flowing into our schools whether they be public, Catholic or independent.” Mr Cheeseman said the Government would announce its response to the review “in the coming weeks”. “Labor believes in providing quality education to all students no matter what schools families send their kids to. We want to make sure teachers, no matter what school they teach at, have the necessary resources to do their jobs.

Men face ‘mobile sex threat’, says scientist BY NOEL MURPHY THE HUMAN brain is said to be the greatest sexual aphrodisiac of all but mobile phones might be changing that, a Geelong scientist has warned. Neuroscientist Sarah Loughrane said that friendly buzz in Aussie blokes’ pockets might be damaging their sperm. The same phone might be responsible for unknown changes in brain activity that researchers around the world are trying to fathom. Doctor Loughrane, home after five years research in Zurich, Switzerland, said too many questions had been raised about the effect of mobiles on sperm shape and movement for the matter to be ignored. Likewise on changes recorded in

brain activity. The jury’s out, Dr Loughrane said, but studies she’s undertaking with University of Wollongong might provide new insights into just what phones really do, or don’t do, to humans. “The brain shows small changes, a fast burst of activity, you don’t have when you’re awake,’’ Dr Loughrane said of research in which participants had phones placed over the right temporal region. The questions are just what this activity might mean, whether it affects sleep or other biological functions and whether more far-reaching effects might be linked to mobile phones. Dr Loughrane said widespread concerns had been raised about cancer

Broadcast win A COMMUNITY battle for digital TV on the Surf Coast will win 16 new channels for Anglesea and Airey’s Inlet, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has announced. Mr Conroy noted “community advocacy” when revealing broadcasters had agreed to upgrade Anglesea’s transmitter to digital, overcoming years of inadequate reception in both towns.

Rights call Mobile: Dr Sarah Loughrane.

A GEELONG forum has called for action on children’s rights, according to organisers. They said the Children’s Rights: From Geneva to Geelong event was a follow up to a periodic review that found Australia was “falling short” on fulfilling its obligations to children and young people.

Dumps foul RUBBISH is fouling public reserves around Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove amid an increase in illegal dumping, according to the area’s foreshore manager. Barwon Coast Committee of Management said the culprits were most likely trying to “avoid paying disposal fees, saving time or effort” but ended up diminishing the “aesthetic value” of reserves while threatening environmental damage.

Epworth unveils design for new hospital BY NOEL MURPHY HERE’S Geelong’s first look at a striking six-storey Epworth/Deakin University training hospital set to be built at Waurn Ponds. The $447 million hospital, designed by architects Silver Thomas Handley, will be built on 8.8 hectares of former Marcus Oldham College land at Pigdons Rd. The hospital will inject 1100 jobs into the regional economy, with an additional 1000 jobs during construction. A joint teaching hospital developed in partnership between Epworth HealthCare and Deakin University, it will host private health facilities and state-of-the-art operating theatres. Lack of time is the most common reason given for clients not exercising. Although fitting in regular workouts when you are really time poor can have its challenges, it is really just a matter of choice and priority. No exercise means accumulating calcium deposits in joints from lack of use, losing strength and fitness, and becoming a lot more susceptible to disease. All the things in your life that are keeping you busy, such as your work and family life, balance delicately on your health and longevity. links to phones but reproductive functions were also a concern because of their sensitivity to heat and the heat generated by mobile phones. Phones might affect sperm motility, the ability of sperm cells to move forward, she said. They might also affect sperm morphology, the shape of sperm cells. “Everything that radiates has the possibility of heating,’’ Dr Loughrane said. “It’s the extent of heating we’re talking about. “There have been quite a lot of studies internationally that suggest motility and morphology can be decreased, and also sperm concentration.’’ Further research was needed because of the inconclusive nature of the studies, Dr Loughrane said.

Talk goes underground in waterfront ‘revamp’ CHILDREN will speak through pipes running underground and emerging in several locations after a “revamp” of a playground on Geelong’s waterfront. Councillor Barbara Abley said the “talking tubes” would be just one of the new features for the playground near Cunningham Pier. A maze of rubber paths

sunken into the ground with planting either side would follow existing foot-worn paths through the playground to help encourage “imaginative play”, she said. “It’s obvious our designers have put a lot of time and thought into developing a concept for this play area and I know it’s going to pay off when we see kids here using it.”

Ms Bantow said the cottage had so far escaped redevelopment because it was tucked away. “It’s the only little brick house in Mercer Plc. “The cottage is no longer in pristine original condition but, apart from its architectural significance, there are many other important reasons for preserving it. “Its history hasn’t been looked at closely, so we need a stay of execution so the place can be researched. Ms Bantow said seeking an interim preservation order from Planning Minister Matthew Guy was the only option to save the cottage. “It’s not likely to get onto the Heritage Victoria listing or be of state interest but it should certainly be within the local heritage overlay.” A Department of Planning and Community Development spokesperson said council’s bid for a stay of demolition was under consideration. 1044735-RMB34-12

BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A DEMOLITION order on one of Geelong’s oldest buildings has been suspended pending a Heritage Victoria report. Businessman Ron Stephens applied to demolish the Mercer Plc working-man’s cottage for a car park. Council applied for a suspension of the demolition after Geelong National Trust planning officer Jennifer Bantow flagged the property’s historic significance. Ms Bantow said the cottage first appeared on an 1854 map of Geelong but lacked heritage overlay protection. “It’s a miracle the place has survived from that period without a heritage overlay. “It’s a working man’s house from the early part of Geelong’s settlement when Mercer St was a busy commercial entrance to the town. “It dates from the pre-gold rush era and anything from that period is so rare and amazing.

Independent. “It’s pretty sad really. If they say our club’s a criminal organisation, will they stop me associating with my own son who’s a member? “We have five fathers and sons at our club - are they going to tell us we can’t associate with each other? “How far will they go next?’’ The proposed state laws, expected to be passed in coming weeks, would allow biker gangs to be formally outlawed in the Supreme Court. Members could be jailed, ordered to stop wearing patches, have motorcycles and

club assets confiscated and their clubhouses destroyed. Mr Sloan declared the changes “totalitarian’’ and “Draconian’’. “Any individuals committing crimes already faced the full force of the law without police needing to attack clubs, he said. “It’s almost like they think we’re above the law but surely if we were breaking the law they can already charge us. And if there was any crime wouldn’t this just push it underground? “I just really don’t understand what

they’re doing. “It’s way over the top, like something in Iraq or Afghanistan. It’s ridiculous.’’ Attorney-General Robert Clark has said the Government was not prepared to let Victoria become a “criminal bikie gang haven”. The proposed changes would smash gang culture under Victoria’s “antiassociation’’ laws, he said. The Finks and Hells Angels bikie clubs have successfully challenged similar interstate laws on constitutional and human rights grounds.

Foxes on the run from bounty hunters Profit misses retail Target BY MICHELLE HERBISON A FOX bounty swapping scalps for cash at Geelong and Colac has been successful in curbing pests, according to State Government. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Peter Walsh said the bounty reduced the region’s fox population by nearly 6000 since its introduction nine months ago. About 170 hunters received $10 for each fox scalp at Geelong and Colac. Mr Walsh said 80,000 foxes and wild dogs were slaughtered for the bounty state-wide. “That’s 80,000 foxes and wild dogs no longer able to breed or savagely maul lambs and calves, devastating the livestock and farmers who have to deal with the horrific consequences.” Mr Walsh said the bounty allowed livestock owners who were already controlling pests to be compensated for their efforts. Shadow agriculture and rural and

BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN CHALLENGING trading conditions contributed to a 12.9 per cent profit drop for Geelong headquartered Target, its annual results showed. Target reported earnings of $244 million, down from $280 million last year. But managing director Dene Rogers said part of the reason for Target’s underperformance was a $40 million provision to streamline the company’s supply chain. Target reported a sales decline of 2.1 per cent and a revenue drop of 1.2 per cent. The Target performance contrasted with strong performances among other Wesfarmers businesses Coles, Bunnings and Kmart. The three bumped Wesfarmers’ net profit after tax for the year up to $2.126 billion

BY NOEL MURPHY GEELONG-based Bandidos boss Kim Sloan has slammed new anti-biker laws as better suited to Hitler’s Nazi Germany than a free Australia. OUR BAYFRONT ‘BOMBSITES’ CLEAN UP THE WATERFRONT

Call for body to oversee action

Bay our ‘icon’ CORIO Bay should be declared Geelong’s new high-profile icon, says Geelong Environment Council. “It’s here staring us all in the face,’’ council Joan Lindros said. She argued that the bayfront’s length and breadth from Point Lillias to Point Henry needed a special focus. The Independent last week reported calls for action on “bombsites littering the foreshore, with figures including Ms Lindros blaming duck-shoving between authorities. She listed a series of sites worthy of remediation or protection. “There is a range of industrial

facilities, the port, the Avalon and Lillias foreshore, naturally and geologically interesting and RAMSAR-listed, and history at Osborne House that should become a showpiece. “Rippleside Park is a green gem and must be protected. Ramsay’s Rippleside (slipway) disaster should somehow be reconsidered, I don’t know how, but he has destroyed the ship facility and left a mess.’’ Mrs Lindros fired a salvo at billion-dollar convention centre plans for Eastern Park and called for a former gun club site to be cleaned up and adjoining historic lime kilns improved.

“This is a huge task,’’ she said. “The area of land the gun club was on has magnificent views and should not be built on. “Eastern Park must be protected from development. The Cheetham ponds likewise should not be built on but highlighted as valuable bird areas.’’ The environment council called for a special body to oversee the protection and rehabilitation of the bay’s foreshore. “A new committee with someone of vision to convene it would be a really good start,’’ Mrs Lindros said. noel.murphy@geelongindependent.com.au

Creepy power station a safety risk NORTH Geelong’s abandoned power station looks like something from a post-apocalpytic Mad Max movie. Once an industrial icon of the North Geelong shoreline, it’s now a shattered, abandoned, ugly mess. Around the imposing grey concrete structure fences have been torn down, windows smashed and steel security bars cut. Dangerous sharp wire, derelict steel and broken concrete threaten the visitor. Inside the unsecured station, a kaleidoscope of spray-can art, pornography and vandalism make

Special report BY NOEL MURPHY for a bizarre coloured exhibition. But watch your step. Trip up and unprotected holes in the floor will send the intruder hurtling two metres below the floor. Get adventurous and take the stairs to the concrete landings high overhead and risk a deadly fall. No railing protects the unwitting.

Anyone entering this place at night, even with torchlight, would take their life in their hands. Even in the day it’s a strangely threatening site. The power station has been host to intruders for a long time. The walls are extensively splashed with artwork, including graphic sexual images. The only way these artists could have reached the heights their artwork now adorn was with considerable risk. The power station is not just an ugly, neglected part of Corio Bay’s shoreline – it’s a threat to life and limb.

TAFE accepts ‘change’ - MP

BY NOEL MURPHY TAFE INSTITUTES including Geelong’s Gordon have accepted they need to be revamped, Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay has told parliament. Mr Ramsay said his talks with The Gordon chief Grant Sutherland and others had “all led me to believe there is an acceptance that the sector needs an overhaul”. Mr Ramsay also told the Independent TAFE bureaucracy was “historically” unconducive to “best outcomes for students and course delivery”. He said a desire to improve the relevance of TAFE courses to employer needs drove the Government’s $300 million funding cut for the sector, including $15 million from The Gordon. The cuts followed an explosion in enrolments for courses such as fitness and sport coaching by 4000 per cent against a 10 per cent hike in skill-shortage areas such as carpentry, plumbing, construction, nursing and aged care. Critics also cited providers granting diplomas for 60 to 80 hours’ work despite Australian Qualifications framework demanding 600 to 800. Mr Ramsay said competition from private course providers also presented difficulties for TAFEs, although about 100 “donkey ones had dropped out already”. “I think there’s been a general recognition by providers and teachers that there needed to be some reforms of the TAFE sector.” The tighter TAFE funding models would lead to consolidation of courses across campuses, Mr Ramsay said. “You’ll see greater partnerships, better quality programs and students better placed to meet job requirements. “The sector is entering an exciting time in which the methods of old are under scrutiny and new options and arrangements are being drawn up, whether it’s...an alliance with regional TAFEs or partnerships for employers in the Geelong region.” Mr Sutherland said he had not discussed with Mr Ramsay his reference to TAFEs needing an “overhaul”. “Huge challenges’’ lay ahead for TAFE institutes,

he said. “These cannot be understated. However, it is important to remember that among all of these difficulties great things continue to happen at The Gordon,” Mr Sutherland said. The Gordon signed an agreement with Barwon Health to provide workforce development assistance, he revealed. Mr Sutherland said The Gordon was fighting to minimise the impact of its funding cuts. The Gordon was preparing a business transition plan to submit to the State Government early next month, he said.

BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN ANOTHER three Deakin staff have been notified of “forced redundancy”, according to a union. National Tertiary Education Union Deakin branch president Dr Steve Mackey said more redundancies were foreshadowed. The Independent reported in July that nine staff from Deakin’s Geelong campuses and seven from Burwood were made redundant, with up to 24 jobs expected to be cut. The cuts were announced as Deakin revealed its move to cloud learning, “a revolutionary digital and educationally engaged future for students and staff”. “We are confronting five or six possible redundancies in the Business and Law Faculty,” Dr Mackey said. “But the campuses involved are not clear and no final decision has been made.” Dr Mackey said the three notified redundancies involved staff working in the knowledge media and Institute of Teaching and Learning areas. “These are areas helping staff to teach with technology. The management has yet to explain the logic of this to us.”

Snack trials at TOP PET FOODS COST LESS! clubs ‘success’ BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A PROGRAM pushing healthy foods at sport clubs will roll out statewide with an extra $3.3 million in funding despite encountering resistance in Geelong trials, according to VicHealth. Sue McGill said clubs involved in the Geelong pilot program discovered changing attitudes was tough. “Clubs have recognised that significant culture shifts take a long time,” Ms McGill said. “It’s a two-and-a-half-year program, so we hope to see an indication of culture change by that time. “Many clubs have been operating along traditional lines for a long time. “It’s not about banning beer and pies but looking at healthier options, whether in the canteen, the bar or creating a welcoming,

inclusive environment.” Ms McGill said clubs had appointed “champions of change” to help drive cultural change. Some clubs experienced an increase in members and improved participation levels, she said. Latrobe University’s Centre for Sport and Social Impact evaluated the first season of the Creating Healthy Sporting Environments Demonstration Project. The $2 million VicHealth project, which Leisure Networks delivered in Geelong, included 78 sport clubs. “We tried to keep it practical, holding forums with local nutrition experts on how to prepare and provide healthy options without wasting time or money,” Ms McGill said. “Canteen healthy options are of real interest to local clubs and they’re keen to get some assis-

tance to tackle cultural change.” Geelong Softball Association secretary Kristy Linehan said clubs embraced the program. “Softball is a dying sport and the biggest challenge for us is increasing participation. “The opportunity to change our environment to be more relaxed and friendly encouraged culturally and linguistically diverse families to join. “We also get a financial bonus for completing sections of the program, which helps us as a fringe sport.” Ms Linehan said softball clubs now had welcome signs in different languages and introduced a colour coded food system used in school canteens scared people away because we were so united – it could be intimidating for new people.

BELMONT kinder kids finally have a new playroom after 40 years of waiting. Victorian Children and Early Childhood Development Minister Wendy Lovell officially opened Belmont Community Kindergarten’s $400,000 playroom extension this week. Ms Lovell noted it as the kinder’s first extension since opening in 1973. The playroom had enabled the kinder to accommodate 123 students in three and fouryear-old kinder classes, she said. The kindergarten’s parents raised $100,000 for the playroom, with State Government contributing the remainder. Ms Lovell said the extension would make a “huge difference to so many Belmont families”.

Region ‘must use Avalon export potential’

Foods for thought BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE GEELONG region risks missing an opportunity to export food through Avalon Airport, according to a senator. Nationals Senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie said lack of awareness about a national food plan could leave locals excluded. Sen McKenzie urged businesses involved in the food sector to make submissions to the Federal Government plan.

She said submissions needed to promote export opportunities through Avalon Airport. “With the increasing protein needs of Asia, Geelong is in a great position to capitalise on that,” Sen McKenzie said. “Immediacy of air transport is key for fruit and vegetable export, so this is a real opportunity for the region.” One of 24 forums on the national food plan was in Geelong earlier this month. “I prefer to see as many pro-

ducers at these meetings as possible rather than just bureaucrats,” Sen McKenzie said. “The Federal Government needs to receive real input from real people involved in the sector. “Sometimes there has been a lack of industry views included. It’s the only way to find out what the barriers are in the current system. “This is an opportunity for farmers and food processors to outline the challenges they face from government policy deci-

sions.” Sen McKenzie said Victoria’s agricultural sector was worth $9 billion a year as Australia’s biggest exporter of food and fibre. “The public consultation process is an opportunity for regional industries to feed local knowledge into the future of Australian agriculture and ensure our future competitive advantage.” Written submissions to the food plan close September 30.

Taking care of women in business around Geelong GENDER means a lot to the members of BPW Geelong. In fact, it’s right at the top of their agenda. Business and Professional Women Geelong is going about the job of demonstrating that females mean business. President Jenny Gretgrix said women owned and operated a third of small businesses. “Many women became small business owners because after motherhood they often found they did not fit back into the standard working environment,” Jenny said. “So they look for an alternative offering flexible work arrangements, local employment opportunities and are family friendly. “Plus, small businesses employ significant numbers of women and they’re looking for professional and individual support. “That’s what we’re about: offering women a networking opportunity as well as professional development.” BPW’s Belinda Lyle said she, like many Geelong women, joined initially to network. “But then women find there’s a lot more to it. They get involved in our advocacy work with issues like equal pay, work-life balance and paid parental leave. “It enables women to be more politically aware and active and informed about the issues so they can form a view.” Belinda said business memberships

JOHN VAN KLAVEREN were increasing as owners sought to offer female staff the opportunity to attend and expand their horizons. BPW hosts a number of events including a monthly dinner meeting and its annual Moving On Up breakfast. “We have up to 400 coming along to the breakfast now. Many men come along too,” Jenny added with a smile. Membership officer Di Nelson said a broader range of women was joining the organisation. “BPW was perhaps somewhat old fashioned a few years ago but we have a new team who have modernised the organisation,” Di said. “We aim to be responsive to member needs, put up topics that are relevant, practical and applied to real situations women encounter in business and professional life.” Di said BPW engaged a suite of interesting speakers who added to women’s lives, professionally and personally. letters Timely reminder LAST week’s Independent story about a Vietnam veteran drumming up support for a march to commemorate the loss of life of some 500 Australian soldiers was timely. It also brought back memories for me as an antiwar activist during the 15-year American war in Vietnam. The article was also a timely appeal as we now see the folly of again sending our troops – although not conscripts, yet, – to follow blindly the United States in its desperate struggle to maintain its economic and cultural domination of the world. Lest we forget that six million Vietnamese lives were lost and countless others have died from the use of chemical weapons sprayed on their country. In order to stop this slaughter we activists showed films, brought speakers and artists from America and Vietnam and produced regular newspapers, pamphlets, stickers and badges to protest the war. During the closing stages of the war The Pentagon Papers disclosed that the political reasons for invading Vietnam were a pack of lies. Troops on active duty were overdosing on drugs and turning on officers by throwing grenades into their tents. While it is unlikely I will see over 100,000 people marching against US imperialism again in the near future, I will continue to support small peace groups and churches who say no to war. John Ellis Point Lonsdale

On path to project I WRITE to concur with Pricilla Wright’s call in last week’s Independent for a footpath along Melville Ave, Newtown. The construction of new footpaths in Geelong is undertaken using special rate and charge provisions in the Local Government Act, requiring abutting property owners to contribute half the construction cost for the footpath. This would be the case with Melville Ave. This project could have proceeded a number of years ago except for objections from abutting property owners who understandably opposed the requirement to contribute half the construction cost. I see this footpath as a strategic link to schools, river paths and other facilities in the area. Accordingly, I have identified this infrastructure to be completed in the next council budget utilising, in part, funds allocated to Kildare Ward. This way the footpath will be constructed at minimal, if any, cost to abutting property owners. Cr Stretch Kontelj Kildare Ward

Stamp out ‘cancer’ of bullying I THANK Michelle Herbison for her story highlighting the rise in bullying reported to police (Independent, August 10). Bullying in all forms, be it online, at schools or in the workplace, is serious and has devastating effects on individuals. We are all aware of young Brodie Panlock taking her own life after being bullied at work, which led to the introduction of Brodie’s Law. Thankfully, it appears Brodie’s Law will become national after a recent Federal Government inquiry into work-

Worst behaviour AS AN older member of Barwon Heads’ community, I have never been more embarrassed or appalled at the behaviour of my peers as displayed at meetings and a City of Greater Geelong hearing regarding Barwon Heads’ kindergarten. What a terrible example of ill manners displayed in front of our younger community! The constant mutterings, interruptions and refusal to sit politely and allow younger members of our community to speak was an appalling example of rudeness. It was also unbelievable and abhorrent that one person even threatened the councillors’ chances of re-election if they did not vote against the Village Park location. In contrast, the behaviour of the younger supporters of the Village Park location should be of great pride to the community. As the majority of submissions sent to council were in favour of the Village Park proposal, it would be wonderful if the older community could support this venture and display respect for the decision that has been reached through a democratic process. Jan Brown Barwon Heads

to act in any way. I also started a local petition to create awareness of workplace bullying, www.bullyfreegeelong.org. I thank the Independent for highlighting a significant cancer in our society, schools, on the internet and in workplaces because without community awareness this issue will continue to simmer under the surface, with more victims suffering in silence. harmful to teeth and to the general health of everyone in the long-term; the expense is high. The original reasons in 1941 were political – to give an advantage to industry polluting the environment – but the argument of better teeth was a PR fraud, and the dangers of fluoride were known. Mark Twain said people were easily fooled but also hard to convince they had made a mistake. If we have been so willing to copy the USA in the past, we should also look now in all Australian states and territories together putting at an end to the useless, damaging and unethical practice of adding industrial sludge to public drinking water. Peter Linaker Ocean Grove

Managing refugees

US and fluoride

DISCUSSION on refugees and the Houston report skirt around the core issues, missing the mark in almost all cases. We all must ask: How does the accident of where we were born give us the right to tell someone else where they can live? The answer is not anarchy or indeterminate. In the lucky country the answer must lie in the existence of processes that are fair, predictable and practical. In the case of Australia’s pitiable struggle with refugees, perceptions of threat and fear are not assisted by untruths and deliberate omission. The reality is that refugees are not queue jumpers if no queue exists in their countries of origin. Moreover, there is no reason why Australia cannot take steps to create a queue process that is accessible and operates from a safe place. Clearly, the refugee issue needs to be managed. If management demands that Indonesia, Malaysia or some other country is the place in which the queue has to be managed because that is where the refugee queues are then it is open to Australia to transfer the whole or part of its declared annual refugee intake to the management of those queues. There is no evidence to suggest that countries in which refugees are now queuing to come to Australia would not welcome a partnership to manage the queues now left to the management of people smugglers. Allocation of even a substantial part of Australia’s foreign aid to this task would not be inappropriate. Joe Remenyi Torquay

AFTER more than 60 years of fluoridation of public water supplies in the US, more and more distributors and states are quitting, citing waste of public money. Dentists and others advocating the practice now have no grounds to claim benefit. Fluoridation is

Mail: Email: Fax:

According to Mayor Bob Merriman, a significant sum of money, reportedly in excess of $50,000, was allocated for the proceedings. Because these hearings are closed, the councillor in question, as is his right, decided to take his case to Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to defend himself in a public forum. Now he has been denied his day in court to clear his name because the borough has withdrawn the allegations, citing cost overruns. This excuse is just a furphy because, in the reported words of Cr John Burgess, “VCAT (has) a history of failing to bring recalcitrant councillors to heel”. Talk about pre-empting the umpire’s call. What a travesty of justice! The mayor has stated that the voters should decide. Is this the brave new world for justice in this country? What if Cr Mitchell decides not to contest the upcoming election? How exactly is he then able to defend his reputation and integrity? What happened to the good old Australian fair go? It’s certainly not in Borough of Queenscliffe where the political version of football’s king-hit behind the play rules. Rob Wallis Point Lonsdale

The dags of Alpine BY CHERIE DONNELLAN ANY AWARD for Most Original Band Formation would surely go to indie pop sextet Alpine. Best friends and co-vocalists Lou James and Phoebe Baker had guitarist Christian O’Brien as their singing teacher. He grew up in Phillip Island with drummer Phil Tucker. James and Baker met bassist Ryan Lamb at a Melbourne bar when he was a backpacker. James attended university with keyboardist Tim Royall. Baker told the Independent the eclectic group had become a “family”. Baker admitted the band comprised “a bunch of dags” with a love of whiskey and “treats like cakes”. “We’re like brothers and sisters now,” she observed. “We even make playlists for each other to play during car trips.” Baker described the band’s debut album, A is for Alpine, as a “chocolate box”. “We’ve got songs that are quite upbeat dance tunes and then much more mellow ones.” The lyrics denoted “an exploration through our 20-something emotions”, she said. “There are a few songs that touch on

anxiety, then some about love and lust and some even about the things we’ve experience while travelling.” The band was excited to play at Geelong’s Bended Elbow as part of its first headline tour this September. Baker said Alpine had worked hard to develop its live sound while supporting major acts like The Jezabels, Matt Corby, Kimbra and Sia. “We’ve been developing our live show through those shows and now we’re so excited we can tour for our album. “It’s our music, so it’s really special.” Baker said the band revelled in working with directors who created quirky video clips to accompany Alpine’s music. “It takes strong image to please us and it’s fun to see how directors interpret our music.” Baker reminisced shooting second single Villages at a “haunted mansion”. “We travelled to Campbelltown, two hours south of Sydney, to this quiet suburban town and in the middle of it was this beautiful mansion,” she remembered. “We arrived at four in the morning and this Irish caretaker with bushy eyebrows greeted us. “Then he told us he lived with two little children who were ghosts.” “It was an awesome shoot,” Baker laughed.

In celebration of South Sudanese

Sextet: Alpine plays Geelong next month.

GEELONG will celebrate its Sudanese community at a second annual community event marking the start of spring. City of Greater Geelong and Clovedale Community Centre have joined forces to run South Sudan Day from 1pm to 4pm on September 1. The organisers said the free event, in the community centre on Corio’s Purnell Rd, would feature a “celebration of Geelong’s vibrant South Sudanese community”. The event would also serve as a fundraiser for the women and children of Agouk in the state of Warrap, South Sudan. The organisers said the day’s “family friendly activities” would include a Loul Dinka choir and dancers, South Sudanese food and coffee, henna tattooing, hair braiding and manicures. The event would also include a screening of We Lost Our Hair From Carrying Water, a film about a South Sudanese community’s struggle to survive and the building of three water wells. The film is centred in Warrap, the poorest state in South Sudan and the focus of the event’s fundraising activities. South Sudan Day 2011 help fund construction of the wells. “South Sudan is the newest country in the world and it needs our help,” the organisers said. “South Sudan Day is an opportunity for the people of Geelong to show their collective support for South Sudanese Australians in Geelong and their families still in South Sudan, who in drought and the aftermath of war are dying from no water and no food. More information is available from Cloverdale Community Centre.

Pig out for kids rivia nuts can help raise money for children in need at an upcoming Gateway Hotel event. Geelong’s Gateway Hotel will host a trivia night to support Very Special Kids. The unique organisation supports more than 800 Victorian families in caring for children with life-threatening illnesses, from diagnosis through to bereavement. Sadly, many of the children will not reach adulthood. This years’ “family face” of Very Special Kids’ Piggy Bank Appeal, the McMahon family, has received support from the organisation since 2004. Son Angus was four when he was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive, muscle-wasting disease only affecting males. Mum Liz recalls the family felt a mixture of horror and shock when Angus was diagnosed. For dad Michael, the hardest fact to face was the impact it would have on Angus’ daily life. “The nature of the disease is that it takes away his muscle cells one by one. Eventually he can’t walk or do all the things we all take for granted.” The McMahon’s first experience with the organisation was when Angus attended a muscular dystrophy weekend at Very Special Kids House. “It was wonderful seeing him interacting with the other boys because this was the first time he felt like he fitted in,” Liz recalls. The organisation’s iconic giant piggy banks will aim to raise $1 million in community donations this September as part of the Very Special Kids Piggy Bank appeal. The Gateway Hotel’s trivia night will offer fun for the whole family from 7.30pm on September 15.

In your face: Styling of the latest Mazda3 is far from being subtle thanks to its large grille and subsidiary air intakes.

Big seller, big style BY ERIC BLAIR azda3 is one of the big players on the Australian small-medium car scene, helping Mazda to become the number one importer and then topping that when the ’three became the country’s biggest selling car for 2011, the first time since the arrival of the first Holden 1948 that an imported car has been our top seller. It goes without saying that the Mazda3 is well-built and reliable, but the excellent styling has a lot to do with its sales success. Styling that suits buyers looking for a car with a bit of pizzazz. Launched here in 2004, the Mazda3 was the replacement for the long-running Mazda 323 series. The name change was due to Mazda seeing its latest range as

M

introducing a whole new generation of models. Conservative buyers were suspicious of the new name at first, but the Mazda3 is now an accepted and respected car amongst them. Economy is all the rage at the moment with each car company trying out differing approaches to attract the green sales. In late 2011 Mazda introduced a new model called the Mazda3 SP20 SkyActiv. Featuring some all-new technology designed to significantly reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, the SkyActiv takes an altogether different approach in engineering. eelong’s mechanics and authorised service centre Rally Motors has split its business to improve services for customers. Rally Motors, at 11 Curtis St, Belmont, now operates as the company’s service centre. Rally Off Road, at 305 Bellerine St, South Geelong, looks after all customers’ four-wheel-drive needs. Manager Daniel says the move has been successful. “We’ve basically done it so each business can focus on its own expertise, he says. Rally Motors, the company’s general service and repair centre, services all late-model vehicles as well as classic and heritage cars. Log-book servicing, general repairs and diagnostic are just some of the areas Rally Motors covers. Daniel says Rally Motors’ staff-members are at the forefront of keeping up with the latest technology. “We do a lot of training and keep up to date with the latest diagnostic equipment, he says. Rally Off Road offers a full range of four-wheeldrive services, from accessory sales and fitment right through to logbook servicing, pre-trip inspections and modifications and repairs. It is one of the region’s few dedicated off-road specialists. Rally Off Road is Geelong’s sole distributor for Ironman 4x4 products including bullbars, winches, suspensions and more. Daniel says Ironman 4x4 is the fastest-growing four-wheel-drive accessory company in the country. “It’s a good product at a reasonable price and affordable to the average person. More information is available at http://www.rallymotors.com.au. Bookings for Rally Motors car servicing is available by phoning 5222 1777.

us Dent has been servicing the Geelong area for the past nine years, offering paintless dent repair as a cost effective way of repairing vehicle dents and dings that have not cracked or chipped paintwork. Geelong’s Aus Dent can get the job done right the first time with no sanding, fillers or expensive paintwork. With award-winning technicians, be assured your car is in good hands. Paintless dent removal leaves vehicles with the original finish, so there’s no mismatched paintwork or repair marks. Paintless dent removal is also faster than conventional body shop methods and most repairs can be finished in a couple of hours. The technique is relatively new to Australia but has been used by European car manufacturers like Mercedes Benz and BMW for more than 20 years. Geelong manager Gary LeGuern says Aus Dent saves time and money. Aus Dent Geelong offers free quotes and a quality guarantee. Aus Dent is at 3/100 Barwon Terrace, South Geelong. Phone 5223 1128 or 0414 638 749 or visit the Aus Dent website at ausdent.com.au.

– from page 30 However, the Mazda3 SkyActiv models we have just road tested have a slightly detuned version of the engine. Partly because many Australian drivers are reluctant to pay for the more efficient 95 high octane petrol. Note that the term ‘SkyActiv’ covers not only engines, but also transmissions and body aerodynamics and special tyres. Part of the economy engineering in the SkyActiv is a new design of six-speed automatic transmission that features very tall gearing in fifth and sixth ratios. This sees the engine running at just over 2000 revs at 100 km/h. The engine has strong torque and is reasonably willing to rev. About town we found it generally running in the eight to nine litres per hundred kilometres range and on long trips on the open road there was no trouble getting it under six litres. Best of all, the SkyActiv achieves consumption that’s almost as low as that of a diesel engine, without the turbo lag and smell that are an unfortunate part of diesels. And the Mazda engine also saves on the cost of a turbocharger as it has achieved all this efficiency without recourse to forced induction.

Geared: The transmission has a sporty feel that keen drivers will enjoy. Build quality is typical Mazda in being close to immaculate in all areas inside and out. Ride comfort is generally good, though the car does get bumped about on some rough and ready backroads at times. Similarly, the tyres, while usually quiet, don’t like being on coarse-chip bitumen, setting up a fair old racket at times. Handling is nice and sharp and in keeping with the sporting aspirations of the SP badges. There’s sharp turn in and the Mazda3’s ability to hold the road will keep everyday drivers well and truly out of trouble.

sport Dragons victory to lift Lara into finals action

Positive: Chris Scott eyes the media this week.

Tatts a footy: Defender Josh Hunt at training.

One-year contract plans for star Cat BY JOHN VAN KLAVEREN TRIPLE premiership midfielder Paul Chapman could face a series of one-year contracts to see out his career at Geelong, coach Chris Scott has revealed. Scott said this week that he saw no reason a one-year contract deal could not be finalised. Chapman has said he prefers a two-year contract, believing that at 31 he still has at least two years left. “Paul Chapman’s comments made perfect sense to me,” Scott said. “He’d like to play a bit longer than one year and we’d like him to as well. We’ll just do it in one-year contracts. “Paul is very clear on what the club’s position is. I’ve had really good discussions with him and I don’t see any issue with that contract being done. “We have a lot of guys out of contract and we are assuming all of them will get done.” Scott was positive about the potential finals impact of long-term injured players Travis Varcoe and Nathan Vardy. Varcoe is being considered for a recall to the senior side to play Western Bulldogs,

Eyes on the ball: Jimmy Bartel receives a pass. Pictures: Tommy Ritchie 86072 Scott said. “We think (Travis) has the capacity to do that but we want him coming in feeling pretty good about his body and feeling free

in the way he plays and attacks the game. “If we get (Travis) back it will be a huge bonus for us. We’re not putting pressure on him to significantly change the way we play. “Now the question is how much is enough and how much is too much and does the lift in intensity at AFL level make a difference.” Scott said Vardy was still at least a week away from selection. “It’s a bonus he’s playing at all. He won’t be considered this week but he could still have an impact this season.” Geelong appears satisfied that it has made its point with umpires adviser Jeff Gieschen about the play on call resulting in a Steve Johnson snap set shot for goal smothered by St Kilda’s Jack Steven. “I had a discussion with Jeff Gieschen and out of respect for his department I’d prefer to keep those conversations private,” Scott revealed. “We’re pretty confident that situation won’t happen again.” Scott said Johnson would not be under any instructions to change the way he played.

GEELONG Football League plays its final home-and-away games this weekend, with the final five still unsettled. This is the closest the competition has been in years, which is a good sign for its administration. Lara is in the box seat to advance into the five at the expense of Leopold. All the Cats have to do is beat St Alban’s and have Leopold lose its match to Bell Park. Lara will beat St Alban’s but Leopold is no certainty to lose to Bell Park. Last weekend the Lions turned in a great performance to defeat fellow finals challenger Colac. If the side turns on another performance like that then it’s finals bound. Bell Park is also in good form and will have a home-ground advantage for this game. Expect the Dragons to win by a narrow margin and gift Lara a finals spot. Other selections: Grovedale v ST MARY’S, Newtown v SOUTH BARWON, West Saints v COLAC, LARA v St.Albans and North Shore v ST JOSEPH’S.

BFL Portarlington’s ground will host its biggest crowds for the year when Bellarine Football League runs the first games of its finals series there this weekend. Torquay and Ocean Grove renew acquaintances on Saturday in the qualifying final. These two only played each other last weekend in the final home and away game, with Ocean Grove winning by just four points. The Tigers looked the better side leading into last weekend’s game and will have done a bit of soul searching during the week. Maybe it was the loss it had to have but it would be unwise to think the Grubbers won’t be just as good on Saturday. Expect another close game, with Torquay just getting over the line. Modewarre will be out to make playing its first final in years a success when it takes on Drysdale in Sunday’s elimination final. The Warriors haven’t made it this far by luck alone and there’s a lot of substance to their finals credentials. Last weekend they pushed premiership favourite Queenscliff before going down by 15 points.

Local Footy FRANK MASON John Meesen has slotted into the side and his AFL experience and size adds another dimension to the team. Drysdale is a solid outfit with few weak links and will be confident its finals experience will give an edge over the Warriors. Modewarre will be the crowd favourite and will justify that with a win by a few goals.

GDFL Geelong and District Football League also begins its finals series this weekend with games at St Alban’s Reserve. On Saturday Thomson and Bannockburn clash in the qualifying final. These two sides met only a fortnight ago when Bannockburn emerged as convincing victor. That will give the Tigers plenty of confidence for this game but they have to remember Luke Forbes was missing from Thomson’s line up that day. Forbes has kicked over 100 goals this season and, along with Brent Macleod and Russell Grigg, is an important part of Thomson’s set up. Bannockburn has slowly built itself into an imposing team but will find a near full-strength Thomson side too strong. On Sunday Werribee Centrals and East Geelong meet in the elimination final. East has good players in Ryan Closter, Ricky O’Toole and Lucas Murphy but a run of injuries has tested its depth. Werribee has a strong forward lineup, with Craig Rosenweig, Tyren Montebruno and Nathan Lovell. The big St Alban’s ground tested the fitness of Werribee in last year’s finals series but that won’t be the case in this game, with the Centurions tipped to win a very close game.

On the Bite goes on break THE INDEPENDENT’S On the Bite fishing column will return next week. Columnist Brian Long is interstation on business but will return next

week with his usuall rundown on fishing action across the Geelong, Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast region.
