NEW “ludicrous” boundaries for tow-truck operators will cost a Drysdale business $20,000 a year, according to its owner. Drysdale Smash Repairs owner Neil Yeomans said VicRoads’ recently-gazetted boundary went “right through the middle of Drysdale” at Princess St and Clifton Springs Rd, blocking his access to jobs in the town’s east. The State Government approved the changes without consulting Mr Yeomans, who owns one of the two tow truck licences on the peninsula, he said. Car accident victims were now forced to use an allocation system and have their cars towed to Geelong at far higher costs than before, Mr Yeomans said. “The recent accident with the BluesTrain was actually one of my workers. He got towed to Belmont and was hit with a fine of something like $700 to pay for the driver to come from Geelong to Drysdale and back again.” The newly-enforced boundaries were the same as set by a now-defunct authority set in the 1990s before Clifton Springs’ population boomed, Mr Yeomans said. “In 2007 it was all taken over by VicRoads and those rules were never legislated. I’ve been towing outside the boundary for two years because they were not law.” Ocean Grove Collision Repairs owner Eric Jakubzic said he had been hit with two bills over $500, twice what Mr Yeoman would charge, when forced to use a Geelong towing company. “I’ve been billed for a tow truck to come from Geelong 20km away but we’ve got tow trucks parked one and 10 kilometres from here,” Mr Jakubzic said. Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville used Parliament recently to urge Roads Minister Terry Mulder to review the boundaries. Mr Mulder was unavailable for comment before the Independent went to press.

A $2 BILLION, 200-turbine Bass Strait wind farm could power Geelong within the next six years, according to a city MP. Member for Corio Richard Marles said Hydro Tasmania’s 600-megawatt King Island proposal was “aimed specifically at Geelong”. The facility would be the largest wind farm in the Southern Hemisphere. Hydro boss Roy Adair said the company was considering undersea cable landfall sites in the vicinity of Geelong. The turbines would generate enough electricity for up to 240,000 houses - more than three times to dwellings in greater Geelong. The concept-stage TasWind farm would use Roaring Forties wind to produce 2400 gigawatt hours of renewable energy. The output would be more than five per cent of Australia’s existing renewable energy target. Hydro Tasmania plans to move into full feasibility study mode by

April, with investigations to be completed in 2015. Construction could begin in 2017 if approvals and designs go to plan, with full operation underway in 2019. Hydro spokesperson Samantha Mewey said the company “intended” to connect the project to the power system in the Geelong area. “However, it’s early days and the location of the shore crossing and cable route is yet to be decided. The connection cable would be installed underground,” Ms Mewey said. “The project would involve the construction of what is called a converter station in the Geelong area to convert direct current power to alternating current prior to connection to the existing power system. The converter station would be constructed adjacent to an existing power transmission line.’ Mr Marles said Geelong’s industries meant the city would have a “very energy-intensive” future. “Finding sources of renewable energy is a key part of Geelong’s future and a proposal like this represents a very exciting opportunity,” he said.

GAWS loses $250K By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG’S new animal welfare society board has posted a $250,000 loss, according to its annual report. The figure was a blowout of more than $240,000 on the final year of the previous board. Nineteen directors left Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) in the past financial year following a bitter animal activists’ campaign to introduce a no-kill policy. The campaign included illegal video footage of GAWS staff euthanasing animals and alleged death threats against members. The new board is continuing to seek expulsion of members for unspecified

breaches of society rules. Media has been banned from attending hearings and the board refuses to comment. The annual report said the society had no significant changes to its state of affairs during the financial year. President Joyce Doherty said in the report that “an air of life and optimism now pervades the society and the results are indisputable’’. The annual report showed a significant cut in the number of dogs put down, as much as 40 per cent, but cat deaths remained mostly unchanged. Executive director Belinda Russo said in the annual report that “saving lives comes at a cost’’.

The society’s “new focus moving forward’’ was to ensure its new programs were “financially sustainable for the longterm”, she said. The annual report refused to outline future GAWS plans for fear of an adverse response. “Likely developments in the operations of the society and the expected results of those operations in future financial years have not been included in this report as the inclusion of such information is likely to result in unreasonable prejudice to the society,” the report said. Security staff posted at the annual meeting attempted to turn away at least one life member.

the insurgents because it’s still one of the biggest threats to locals and soldiers alike,” Cpl Taylor said. “We’re trying to teach the ANA guys to trust their own knowledge and skills because the best assets are your own eyeballs. “There is always some sort of sign you can pick up on, from the way stones are piled to ground disturbance. “The excitement of finding devices keeps the guys on patrol going.”

Cpl Reynolds’ second deployment – his first was East Timor – was another opportunity to do a job he loved. “My wife, Tamie, and my family are happy for me to do what I like to do. Tamie knows I love the job. “I know they get nervous but they stay supportive. It’s all new to them but, for me, it’s easier the second time around – it takes the mystery out of it. “It’s not just a job and I can absolutely see progress. We have to stay focused on what we’re doing and just keep going.” Cpl Reynolds said the Aussies and the Afghans were beginning to understand each other. “I’ve made friends with one of the Afghan soldiers; we catch up almost every day. His English is much better, so we can have a proper conversation.” Cpl Reynolds advises the ANAs on security issues, including admitting people to the base, manning sentry towers and searching vehicles. He said the opportunity to catch up with Tamie and the rest of his family on a regular basis via Skype, email and phone calls made a big difference. “We just need to know they’re okay and support us – that’s what gets us through.”

DANGER never lurks far away for three Geelong soldiers based in Tarin Kot, Afghanistan. The tension of living and working in a war zone is palpable, even down the phone line on what the three refer to as a “low-tempo day”. Sergeant Nick Barrand, Lance Corporal Daniel Taylor and Corporal Tom Reynolds had already attended an early-morning briefing before speaking to the Independent. But they were united in their message to their families and friends throughout Geelong: “We are here to do a job and we will get the job done”. They are part of a 1500-strong Australian Defence Force contingent in Uruzgan province where they work to hand control of security to Afghan forces before withdrawing at the end of 2014. Sappers Sgt Barrand, 36, and Lce Cpl Taylor, 27, are training and mentoring members of the Afghan National Army (ANA) 4th Brigade. Cpl Reynolds is a security adviser to the ANA. One of the main tasks for Sgt Barrand and Cpl Taylor is to help Afghan army personnel identify and disarm improvised explosive devices (IEDs), used by Taliban insurgents in their guerrilla war. The soldiers live in a fortified base “behind the wire” with thick walls to thwart rocket attacks. Everyone kits up in full-body armour when moving to exposed positions. “The ANA level of capability is pretty good but they’re working with outdated equipment compared to ours,” Sgt Barrand explained. “We cover every possible variable in our training so when we go out on mobility tasks we can make sure the groups are clear. “We also work to deny the insurgents access to their weapons cache.” The Taliban uses huge caches of weapons that Russian troops abandoned after withdrawing in 1989 from an ill-fated invasion. Sgt Barrand is on his second Afghan deployment. Parents Reg and Jan are relieved he spends more time on the base this time. He welcomed the opportunity through the Independent to let “people back home know what we are up to”. “The main thing is that we know our families are behind us and support us. It’s tough here but everyone is tight and we can all see there is a lot of good to be done.” Coincidentally, Sgt Barrand’s father taught Cpl Taylor at Corio Primary School. “It’s amazing that we met up under these circumstances to find that con-

A “RESTRICTED leave policy” for police during summer will be “unfortunate and unfair” for members working and living locally, according to their union. Police Association spokesperson Greg Davies said local officers would be subject to “fairly severe restrictions” regarding holiday leave this year. “Local command at Geelong is desperately trying to find extra people,” he said. Mr Davies said limited availability of government funds restricted temporary relocation of officers. “In the past people from Ballarat and other areas came to these holiday spots but they’ve got to be accommodated and money’s very tight.” Geelong area commander Inspector Gary Thompson said police living locally but working elsewhere would be redeployed to the Geelong and Surf Coast region to assist with summer demand. “Our restricted leave policy will boost our general numbers within Geelong and Surf Coast. We like to think we’re fair and equitable and we try to treat everybody’s request with the same understanding across the board,” Insp Thompson said. A “co-ordinated effort” would ensure efficient use of police resources, he said. “Some units will be tasked from Geelong to look at Bellarine and Surf Coast, as intelligence tells us.” Bellarine officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Angelo Ferrara said police would “beef-up” their response as coastal populations tripled or quadrupled. “I’m satisfied we’re getting sufficient numbers to put on our service delivery as is required with the busy period.” A permanent divisional van began patrolling the Bellarine Peninsula 24 hours a day in early November, he said. Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville in parliament said “a decision not to double the numbers of police” had raised community concern. “Claims by the (State) Government that police numbers have increased ... are irrelevant when towns like Ocean Grove, Queenscliff, Portarlington and Drysdale can be left without a police presence,” she said. Divisional Commander Superintendent Paul Pottage said police resources on the peninsula had “never been doubled”. “The demand for police services, while rising to some degree over the Christmas period, is generally far lower than for other areas of Corio and Geelong,” he said. Police numbers assigned to the Bellarine Peninsula would be “the same as those assigned last season”, Supt Pottage said.

‘Green grocers’ spruiking for love By NOEL MURPHY THAT overwhelming racket in Geelong’s back yards is the passion plea of a lovelorn green grocer. A green grocer cicada, that is. The strange-looking creatures, like something from a 1950s Japanese sci-fi flick, are emerging from a subterranean existence of up to seven long years in gardens and yards right across Geelong. They’ve been sucking on the sap of plant roots to survive, maturing and waiting for the right combination of heat and rain to breach the surface. And right now they’re ready to go forth and multiply.

WHAT A RACKET: A green grocer cicada. But the noise - more than 120 decibels, in fact. That’s about the same as a jet taking off. Membranes contract at the base of cicadas’ abdomen, buckling and producing their shrill, patent blast. All in the time-worn cause of

attracting a mate. “They emerge from their underground tunnels about this time of year, usually in the first hot days prior to summer, in late spring,’’ naturalist Trevor Pescott explained. “The male calls the female, she lays her eggs in bark on a tree and as soon as they hatch the larvae drop into the ground.” Mr Pescott likened the noise to “a fuel tank popping” at high frequency. Cicadas can live up to a couple of months once above ground but most are here for a good time, not a long time. They’re lucky to last four weeks.

Shire warned on college bid VICTORIA’S Planning Minister has refused to rule out overriding Surf Coast Shire on Christian College’s application for a campus at Torquay. Mr Guy said he would “cross that bridge when it comes to it” when asked whether he might call in a decision on the application. Surf Coast councillors last week voted to defer their decision on the application to build in Spring Creek. Mr Guy slammed council for failing to provide the college with a “straight-forward” answer on a “basic decision”. “It’s council’s decision whether they go ahead with a school

there or not,” Mr Guy said. “We’re not talking about thousands of houses, we’re talking about one private school. “I shouldn’t have to play big brother.” Council has stymied three Christian College attempts to develop a prep-to-year-nine campus and kindergarten since buying the land in 2007. Fierce community protests against any development into Spring Creek led the former council to seek a planning scheme amendment putting the land outside the western town boundary. Mr Guy last week gave council a green light to start work on the amendment but said on Wednesday that councillors could

make a decision on the college application regardless. He accused council of putting “stumbling blocks” in the way of Christian College. “Why do they need meetings with me to decide what to do? No other council in the state needs to do that.” Mr Guy said the shire needed “a kick in the backside”. Christian College chairman James Shirley said the school had sought State Government intervention to rezone the farmland to allow the campus but not housing. Surf Coast Mayor Libby Coker had not returned the Independent’s call for comment before the paper went to press.

THE NEAR-DEATH experience of a car accident helped Newtown artist Ben Hughes realise his dream. “Since the accident I have been more focused, more determined and I’m doing things I should have done before it happened,” Ben said. He created the concept for a board game some time ago but did nothing about publishing it until this year. “The accident has, in a strange way, taken away the fear of failure,” Ben said. “It doesn’t matter anymore. I no longer put off what I need to do.” Ben broke his spine in the accident, spent four weeks in hospital and is still in rehabilitation. “Since the accident I’ve had a lot of time off work but I’ve used the time to do what I should have done long ago. “It changes your perspective and, even though I’ve had some dealings with depression and have my up and down days, I’m more confident.” With the first anniversary of his accident in two weeks, Ben is celebrating by having his creative work included in a unique and emotional exhibition opening on Tuesday. The TAC exhibition, Picture This, offers Victo-

rian artists recovering from road trauma the chance to showcase their work. Ben’s board game, Zombies, Aliens & Monsters (oh my!), will soon be in limited production after raising $2137 through crowd funding site Pozible, passing his target of $1700. He already has 22 pre-orders and the game will be available through the Pozible online store. TAC Chief Executive Officer Janet Dore said some of the exhibitors were artists before their accident and others took up art more recently. “Art provides people with a tangible way to express the emotional trauma that often accompanies a transport accident,” she said. “Each piece of work provides a powerful insight into their individual journeys.” Artists have a chance to win the People’s Choice Award as voted by exhibition visitors. The exhibition will be held at Geelong’s Courthouse Arts from Tuesday to December 16.

Founder Sarah Valentine says membership of the business networking group has tripled in just over a year. “There was no real networking opportunity for the Bellarine as a whole,” Sarah explained. “Individual towns had their own groups and associations but this is an opportunity for businesswomen from Barwon Heads to Portarlington. “There’s nothing else like it, which is why it has been so wellreceived by women in business. “Our members are mums at home starting up micro-businesses right through to women managing large retail outlets. “It’s a real cross-section, with health practitioners, financial services, everyone from dog walkers to principals in accounting firms.

“I’ve been really surprised at range and depth of businesses that call the Bellarine home.” Sarah admitted that starting the group was a leap in the dark. “I didn’t know how many would turn up but now each month an average of four new people walk in the door to our regular events,” she said. The group hosts monthly networking events and quarterly lunches, usually with a featured guest speaker. Members also have an opportunity to participate in business development workshops, offering tools and resources to advance business goals. “We found that many women

in business are great at what they do but not as great at the fundamentals of running a business,” Sarah said. Landscape gardener Helen Melville is a case in point. Helen said one of her goals in establishing her Evolving Gardens landscape gardening and horticultural design business was to take small groups on international garden tours. The Bellarine group introduced her to members of the rysdale Harvey World Travel agency, who were helping her organise tours next year. “A lot of women work from home and run a small business, so our group helps them identify others in the same boat and overcome that sense of isolation,” Sarah said. Cr Kontelj said council had made no decision on what would happen after his six months expired. “The plan was for a first term of six months. YES, they were at it again in Torquay. Most of them are okay, certainly the girls, but it is the groups of drunken males allowed to roam the streets shouting, swearing and showing off that are the problem. Every year it is the same with no solution. This year they targeted street signs with Herculean efforts by the mob to uproot the posts, concrete foundations and all. Great fun! Streets signs are replaceable but the most heinous act of sacrilege perpetrated by these unspeakable youths was the snapping of two of our iconic young Norfolk pines in Price St. These trees, that fought to survive the drought, are irreplaceable and such an act of wanton destruction is appalling. Closer to the bone GEELONG actor-director Charlotte Hukvari likens her latest production, Closer, to reality TV. “You really don’t want to watch but you can’t look away,” she told the Independent. Hukvari believed the Patrick Marber-penned play would give audiences a “kick in the guts” with its “raw honesty” and indepth take on complex relationships and sexual identity. The plot provided “uncomfortable” and “difficult” situations for the cast members during rehearsals, Hukvari said. “But therein lies the challenge.”. Hukvari said the cast had been rehearsing for more than three months to “nail” their characters before the show’s December 12 opening at Geelong’s Woodbin Theatre. “Because the play’s so complex we’ve been focusing on building relationships and the intimacy between the characters. “We want this show to be unforgettable.” Hakvari described her character, Anna, as “interesting”. “I had to find a little bit of extra motives for her actions – to understand her better.

“It’s not obvious why she goes from man to man.” Hukvari found herself being adsored into the role beyond rehearsals the more she worked on her character. “You end up saying lines from the play to random people,” she laughed. “I’m watching myself because the way I speak to people sometimes is the way she speaks. “I can’t get away from her.” Hukvari praised the cast for its acting prowess and commitment to the characters. “The cast has been fantastic at taking everything, especially the difficult things, on board and running with it.” She thought cast member Taliesa Robinson, who plays former stripper Alice, was “brave” for stripping on stage. “She was a little bit uncomfortable because she hasn’t done it before but she’s put everything into her character.” Hukvari advised audiences to immerse themselves in the storyline without reservation, in the same way as the cast. “You have to allow yourself to get emotionally involved or else it doesn’t work.” Woodbin Theatre will host Closer from December 12 to 15.

ALTERNATIVE country singer-songwriter Rory Ellis protests he would never use the word crazy in his lyrics. But some of his stories could be described as just that. According to his lyrics, Ellis once worked at a watering hole where underworld criminal Jason Moran drank, previously lived in a boxing gym and been witness to sordid events overseas. Geelong fans can expect more interesting tales when Ellis debuts his latest album, Twisted Willow, at Bellarine’s Harvester Moon on December 22. He likened his “quite real” songwriting to that of Paul Kelly. “I don’t write a lot of love songs – let the pop stars deal with that s...,” Ellis laughed. Now a Drysdale resident after 40 years in Melbourne, Ellis said his European travels had influenced several of the songs on Twisted Willow. “I have a song called The Woodstore, which is a lovely story about a couple in Germany who own The Woodstore in Coppenbrugge. “They used to see a lot of live music but Karin got ill, so Jorg built her a

house that could host live music gigs, so she didn’t have to go anywhere. “That, to me, is the ultimate act of chivalry.” Another track, Dogging, had a somewhat less endearing inspiration. “My girlfriend and I were campervanning around England during one of my tours and it was hard to find places to park the van,” Ellis reminisced. “We found a strange car park and pulled in only to find out about this weird trend that a congregation of people there would watch each other have sex. “It was freaky and really weird.” The album also includes lighthearted “joke” songs about Ellis’ “floordrobe” and the absurdity of reality TV. Ellis spoke highly of David Steel who will perform with him at the Harvester Moon show. “He’s great – we’ve been good mates for many years. “Steely helped me produce my first four albums and I’m now up to number six. “We took a hiatus from working together because I was touring overseas but we caught up and I said ‘We should get back together’.”

KIA CERATO is a small-medium car that’s too often overlooked. Operating in a tough market segment that’s dominated by cars like Corolla, Mazda3 and Golf, the Cerato, and many others, get lost in the crowd. However, with Korean vehicles rapidly gaining status for their high-quality and excellent value, Cerato is certainly one that should be on the short list for small family cars. Another factor in the Cerato story is that it has only been that name since July 2004. From 1996 to 2000 older versions were sold as the Kia Mentor, in 2000 and 2001 they had the tag of Shuma, and from 2001 until finally settling on the name of Cerato it was sold as the Spectra. Australians love the extra convenience of hatchbacks. We are a nomadic race, forever going on picnics, moving house, buying bulky things and taking part in all sorts of other mobile activities. Both sedan and hatch models come in four versions: S, Si, SiR and SLi. All share the same 2.0-litre fourcylinder DOHC engine, mated with either a six-speed manual transmission, or six-speed automatic with paddleshift Sportsmatic modes. Similar in many ways to its sedan and Koup siblings, the new Cerato fivedoor has the same overall width, height and wheelbase as the sedan, but the rear overhang is reduced by 190 mm, as is the overall length, now 4340 mm. Cerato hatchback’s cargo volume of 385 litres is competitive in its class. The sporty front incorporates new radiator and lower air-intake grilles and new-shape fog lamps. New door mirrors have an LED indicator, while the 17-inch alloy wheels of the SLi variant come in a double five-spoke design. With two standard trim levels, The Si has a black fabric tricot finish, while the range-topping SLi comes with the black fabric with red stitching and the

option of black leather. Rear seats are split 60/40 with the cushion flipping forward and the backrest folding down to create a flat cargo floor. Although the overall height of the Cerato hatchback, at 1460 mm, is the same as the sedan, the extended roofline of the five-door allows for 20 mm more rear seat headroom. Instruments are clear and concise, with cruise control mounted on the telescopic steering wheel and Bluetooth capability in the Si model adding to MP3 and sixspeaker audio of the S sedan. Top-dog Cerato SLi adds automatic lights and rear park assist with in-dash display. The four-cylinder Kia Theta II powerplant produces 115 kW and accelerates the hatchback from standstill to 100 km/h in between nine and ten seconds, depending on the transmission. The new six-speed automatic transmission has a gate-type shift pattern and offers the driver fully automatic, or Sport modes, the latter with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles in the SLi. Fuel consumption is in the seven to eight litres per hundred kilometres on the open road, rising to eight to ten litres around town. That’s for the manual, the automatic transmission is a modern unit and consumption shouldn’t rise by more than about 10 per cent when one is installed. We drove a Kia Cerato Si manual and SLi automatic hatchback and found them both appealing in their own way. The first thing we noticed was the way, unlike some rivals, the doors closed with a solid clunk. The Cerato hatch has carried on the recent good ride-and-handling development work put in by Kia Motors Australia on Sportage and it showed. This is the start of an ongoing program to make all the company’s vehicles suit Australian driving conditions.

The short form of the game gave the Cats an opportunity to break the shackles and play with the flair and excitement that young cricketers thrive on. Hayden Butterworth has been the star with the bat, scoring 200 runs from four hits, with a strike rate well over 100. With the ball, Jacob Thorne and Meyrick Buchanan have moved their season tally to 10 wickets apiece. WHIPPER SNAPPER: Peri Stavropoulos is delighted with his first snapper. North Shore rocks where he enjoyed success on pike. Most were around 60cm but he caught one of just over a metre. Whiting continued to improve, with all the better reports coming from St Leonards to Queenscliff. The earlymorning tides were best, with fresh squid and South Australian pippies taking fish. Plenty of salmon were in the Rip, with anglers using small deep-diving minnowpattern lures enjoying the best results.

Sebile Kooloie Minnows worked well but Noel Carter found that the Tassie Devils he normally uses on trout also worked nicely when used behind a paravane. Duck Island produced good numbers of squid, many around 1.5kg weight and with the best action right on daybreak. Natural-coloured jigs in size 3 were best. Surf anglers reported some awesome captures, with Back Rock producing snapper to 3kg and whiting over 900g.

Salmon captures were reported mainly from Cinema Point just past Eastern View all the way to Apollo Bay. I found the deep water rock platforms extremely productive but it’s always worth a few casts from the beaches. Lures have been accounting for most of the salmon at present. Last weekend marked the official opening of Murray cod season and, while many anglers struggled to land a size

FISHING action warmed up over the past week with the arrival of summer. The smile couldn’t be wiped off young Peri Stavropoulos’s face after he landed his first big snapper after many hours on the water. With his fish weighing around 3kg, Peri will certainly be harassing dad Michael to hit the water again this weekend. Also catching his first snapper of the season was Daniel Porter who wet a line halfway between the channel and North Shore rocks. He caught two fish of 2.8kg and 6.4kg on the run-up to Sunday’s high tide. Land-based anglers increasingly reported small pinky snapper from St Helens, Cunningham Pier and North Shore rocks. Garry Formosa fished the 20m depth off St Leonards for a bag-limit catch of big snapper. All were taken just on sunrise, with the biggest fish pulling the scales to 9.1kg. Hayden Bracken also fished the deep water, returning with a pair of snapper around 5kg each. Dom Calleja fished Portarlington Pier last weekend, catching a snapper of around 3kg and two nice flathead Claude De Lar Rosa fished soft plastics around 50m from the reef at Bird Rock for a mixed bag of flathead, snapper and pike, with the welcome addition of a red mullet and a salmon. Terry Sharp was casting laser lures at

fish, renowned fly-tier and fisherman Ross Virt guided his kids to some outstanding fishing on spinnerbaits. All the kids landed a respectable cod, although Ross himself dropped one. Lure casters enjoyed good fishing in the Barwon River in Geelong. Small bibbed lures such as Atomic Shads, SX 40s and Halco Scorpions produced redfin to 800gram, with red and white, or the Coke can colour, seemingly the best choice at present. Carp were caught in great numbers from the Barwon. The stretches of river taking in Fyans Park, the rowing course and Queen’s Park were all worth fishing, although berley and bread or corn baits were essential. Ballarat’s Andrew Dellaca and Mal Stevens were just two anglers to report great fishing from Lake Wendouree. Fly anglers found both brown and rainbow trout available, especially late in the evening when the fish come on the mudeye hatches. Anglers trolling the lake with lures enjoyed some outstanding redfin action, with a few fish pushing close to 1kg. Shallow-running bibbed lures are essential to avoid lures fouling the lake’s prolific weed beds. Warm weather predicted for the weekend should be conducive to redfin fishing in the Barwon River. Lure is best and anyone bait fishing will need to go to the trouble of gathering live minnows. Saltwater anglers should dust off their surf rods and hit Black Rock in the predicted offshore winds.
