showed hot spots such as Wyndham Vale, Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook all had big improvements and dropped off the list. Insp Christensen said overall Wyndham was doing extremely well with burglaries averaging fewer than 100 per month. He said burglaries in the municipality reduced by up to 40 per cent in the last 12 months. “Police and detectives are doing a tremendous job in the reduction rate of burglaries in Wyndham,” he said. “I can assure the people in Williams Landing we don’t have a problem in Williams Landing and overall Wyndham is tracking really well in relation to this crime theme.”
1086663-LN33-13
WILLIAMS LANDING has become the most burgled suburb in the West and the second most burgled postcode in all of Victoria. RACV’s crime statistics analysis revealed Victoria’s top 10 most burgled postcodes, placing Williams Landing second on the ladder with a burglary rate of 1 in 26 homes. Wyndham Police Inspector Damien Christensen said the statistics should not alarm residents. “There’s not an epidemic of burglaries in any proportion there,” Insp Christensen said. “It’s probably even a low rate compared to the amount of how many houses are there.”
Insp Christensen said the small number of homes in the area resulted in a higher percentage of burglaries when compared to an area with more homes and the same number of burglaries. He said the burglary statistics in Williams Landing also included burglary from homes which were under construction and not occupied, another factor which would increase the results. “It happens in developing suburbs because there are a lot of unoccupied houses under construction,” Insp Christensen said. “Whether it is hot water meters or kitchen taps and sinks, we are working on that but they also go under the same burglary category.” RACV’S crime statistics analysis

Insp Christensen said dedicated units worked tirelessly to break down different crime themes, including burglary. “We have greater resources dedicated to this type of crime,” Insp Christensen said. “And we have a dedicated burglary crew and they’re doing a marvellous job.” Insp Christensen encouraged all residents to take extra precautions leading into the summer and Christmas season. “People who are planning to go away or have houses vacant should notify their neighbours and put actions in place around their letter box,” Insp Christensen said.

A POLICE pursuit across Hoppers Crossing and Laverton last Wednesday night has resulted in the arrest of a 23-year old man in Point Cook. The Airport West man was in custody and due to appear in Court following the police pursuit. The vehicle and driver were located at a Point Cook address at about 11.30pm, almost two and a half hours after police tried to intercept the vehicle several times. Hobsons Bay Highway Patrol members allegedly observed a white Mitsubishi Lancer with false number plates on Old Geelong Rd in Hoppers Crossing at about 9pm last Wednesday night. Police followed the vehicle and attempted to intercept the car on Wallace Ave in Point Cook. But the vehicle allegedly drove onto the Princes Freeway and travelled along the wrong side of the road several times. Police charged the driver with conduct endangering life, evade police, driving on the wrong side of the road and various other traffic related offences.

Concern over council direction I AM not exactly thrilled with the news emanating from the Civic Centre of late and I am sure you feel the same. We have seen one very experienced councillor - Shane Bourke - resign, and others saying publicly, there will be more to follow. One of our State representatives has warned that he is closely following the machinations of the council should there be the need to call in an investigator. This is usually done when a council is dysfunctional and administrators are about to be appointed. On top of all this, late last week we find out council was ordered to reinstate a sacked worker, and has spent several hundred thousand dollars in this whole bizarre and badly handled affair. The negative publicity for the council around this case has done nothing for its image, or that of the City of Wyndham. The accountability is sadly lacking at the moment, and I don’t see a bright or long future for this council. THANKS for the feedback regarding the naming of our new suburb and thanks for the overall support of my idea, that Chirnside should be in the name somewhere. Whether it is simply Chirnside or Chirnside East or Chirnside Heights doesn’t matter, anything but Werribee. Many business people on the email said the stigma around the name Werribee is not perception, it is reality. The idea of naming the streets after local identities seems popular as well. I think it would a fitting tribute to those that have made a long and valuable contribution to the City of Wyndham. As it is a business precinct, maybe the street names should be long time business people and businesses who have provided employment for locals, like my sponsor Chris Byrne or Bisby, Sweeting, Westwood, Marcus, Hudson and I am sure you could think of plenty more, let me know. AFTER dark on weekends something mysterious takes place on Old Geelong Rd. Not long after the likes of Bunnings, Werribee Sand and Soil, Ray’s Outdoors and The Bed Shed close their doors, a new retail venture emerges - Kebab World. There are three kebab establishments in the space of about a kilometre. Why on earth we need three in such a short distance is beyond me.

Council loses ‘spy’ case THE Australian Services Union has welcomed a decision by the Fair Work Commission to reinstate a long-serving council worker who was sacked from Wyndham City Council six months ago. In a significant victory for the union, the Fair Work Commission (FWC) has ordered Wyndham Council to reinstate ASU member Phil Leyshan who was unfairly dismissed in February, and to pay him for the period between his dismissal
and return to work. ASU Branch Secretary Brian Parkinson said that the decision is timely news for a worker who has been well respected during his 25year association at the council. “His colleagues cannot wait to welcome Phil back to the workplace, and it is only fair that council have been ordered to repay any income he would have earned since he was unfairly sacked in February.” “We call on the council to dismiss CEO Kerry Thompson immediately for her appalling lack of
judgement and failure to do her job properly through the authorisation of ratepayers’ money spent on spies, expensive reports, lawyers and resources - including those of senior management over a six-month period – to try and sack people like Phil on the back of baseless accusations. “When you total up the time, money and resources council have spent, we can’t see how they haven’t just wasted over half a million dollars. Councillors need to be asking serious questions of the CEO for the sake of employees at Wyndham and
the ratepayers within the municipality.” Wyndham Mayor Heather Marcus said: “The Mayor and councillors fully support the CEO and Directors in their handling of the Fair Work industrial matter. “We have full confidence in the CEO and Directors in all matters, including the direction they are taking our organisation in managing our challenges and in building a positive working culture here at Wyndham City.”

By XAVIER SMERDON THOUSANDS of Wyndham residents will have to get used to being part of a new State Government electorate with Werribee becoming its own seat. Star revealed last year that Wyndham looked set to gain a new electorate, with both sides of politics calling for an extra seat in the area, possibly in Point Cook. A review by the Electoral Boundaries Commission found that too many people were living within the boundaries of the Tarneit and Altona electorates, warranting a new electorate to be formed. Last week it was officially announced that Werribee would become its own electorate. It will be made up of parts of what are currently the Lara and Tarneit electorates and will be home to around 39,000 voting-aged residents. The new boundaries are final and are not subject to a review by Parliament. They will come into effect from the next Victorian election, which is scheduled to take place on 29 November next year. Member for Tarneit Tim Pallas, whose office is currently in the Werribee CBD, will now need to decide which electorate he wants to represent at the next election. Mr Pallas welcomed the announcement of a new seat in Wyndham. “I am pleased that the West will have additional representation as a result of the redistribution,” Mr Pallas said. “Now the new boundaries have been finalised, I will consult with the Labor Party and make an announcement shortly.” For more information visit www. ebc.vic.gov.au

Shock over apartments By XAVIER SMERDON A WERRIBEE family getting ready to move into their newly built dream home in a quiet court was shocked to find out that they could be living across the road from 41 apartments. Kathryn and Steve Lowe are just weeks away from moving into their new home in Watergum Court. But plans submitted to Wyndham Council for a four storey apartment complex that could be home to more than 120 people to be built directly across the road from them have left the young family dumbfounded. If the plans are approved by Wyndham Council the apartment complex, which includes a café, will be built on a 2500 square metre block and the court will become a
pick up and drop off point for residents. Ms Lowe said the development would create uncertainty for new home builders and buyers in Wyndham if it was approved. “It’s purely and utterly outrageous that they want to put something like this in a court,” Ms Lowe said. “I just wanted to cry when I saw the plans. “We’ve worked all our lives to build our dream home and then this is what we get put in front of us.” Mr Lowe said the development would also make the court too dangerous for his three children to play in. Wyndham Council CEO Kerry
Thompson said if the development received 15 objections its future would be voted on by councillors. “Council encourages housing densities that are appropriate to their location. In making a decision on what is appropriate, council would consider the sites proximity to city/ town centres, amenities, services, recreation, availability of public transport, existing and preferred neighbourhood character, detailed design, parking and potential positive and negative amenity impacts and any other impacting issue,” Ms Thompson said. “Whether or not the proposed development and density of this site is acceptable will be subject to detailed consideration and assessment by council.”

Magic wand for seabirds By XAVIER SMERDON
Professor John Orbell shows off the new instrument. 107938 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT
A WERRIBEE based scientist is gaining praise for inventing a “magic wand” that could help save countless animals caught in dangerous oil spills. Professor John Orbell from Victoria University’s Werribee Campus headed a research team that has developed a cleaning method based on magnetic particle technology, for the rapid treatment of oiled wildlife. More than 10 years of research and development has finally led to the invention being recognised as something that could revolutionised the way birds and other marine life, particularly penguins, are treated in the wake of environmental disasters. The wand won the Banksia Foundation’s Business and Not-for-Profits in Collaboration Award this month, with the award going to both Prof Orbell’s team and Phillip Island Nature Parks Victo-
ria for their work together. Prof Orbell told Star that the wand worked quicker than traditional methods of cleaning oil drenched animals by covering them in an iron powder which absorbs the oil. These oil absorbing particles have also been optimised by his team. Within just a few seconds the magnetic bar which has become known as the wand can be used to harvest both the iron particles and the oil. The wand is designed to allow the oil laden particles to be safely deposited in a container for disposal. “If a bird gets into fuel oil, for example, then it is in big trouble because the toxic and corrosive components can be absorbed through the skin very quickly,” Prof Orbell said. “So we wanted to develop a portable technology to remove the more toxic components of the
oil as quickly as possible, so the bird can then be taken away for further treatment.” While he was clearly modest about his achievements, Prof Orbell said he hoped his invention would make a positive global impact on the environment. “I think it possibly could make a big difference,” he said. “When you are talking about oil spills, saving even a few birds from an endangered species can make a difference between them surviving or dying out.” Even more amazing is how he came up with his award winning idea. He saw a high school student perform an experiment over a decade ago where oil was filtered by plastic beads, sparking his imagination. After years of tweaking and modifying the idea, the wand was finally born.

A TARNEIT man has been arrested for allegedly acting as a debt collector for the Comanchero Outlaw Motorcycle Gang (OMCG). A Victoria Police spokesperson said a 28-yearold Tarneit man, who was a member of the OMCG, had been arrested and was expected to be charged with blackmail and extortion related offences. Three other men from around Melbourne were charged with similar offences last Thursday. The spokesperson said the arrests were part of an ongoing investigation in relation to members of the Comancheros being involved in the planning and execution of blackmail, extortion and other serious crimes against a number of victims in recent months. Detective Inspector Ian Campbell from the Echo Taskforce said the arrests should be a warning to anyone thinking of engaging OMCGs to debt collect unlawfully. “If OMCG members commit offences during the course of this work, the creditors can be held equally responsible for any criminal actions carried out and face charges,” Det Insp Campbell said.

Call for change By XAVIER SMERDON A FORMER Mayor of Wyndham has officially announced that she will not be filling a newly created vacancy to return to the council, even if she wins a countback. Kim McAliney told a State Government initiated Local Government Electoral Review panel that unless changes were made to the council election system she would not stand in any future elections either. Ms McAliney was one of a handful of people eligible to fill a vacancy created when longterm councillor Shane Bourke resigned earlier this month. “I loved representing my
community but given the current climate, my integrity and reputation is far more important, and with the council being put on notice this week (by Member for the Western Metropolitan Region Bernie Finn) to be honest why would anyone take up the seat,” Ms McAliney said. “My decision to stand at any future election will be based solely on the outcomes of this review.” Ms McAliney said her decision not to return to the council was not an indictment of Wyndham Council, but rather the overall system of council elections. She said last year’s election
was plagued by the circulation of unauthorised material, intimidation of candidates, breaches of privacy and bullying. “Last year’s Wyndham City elections experienced in my opinion, behaviour unheard of, in the City’s history,” she said. “Those involved in deceptive practice, whether they were successful or not, should be held accountable for their actions by the Local Government Inspectorate.” Current Wyndham councillor Gautam Gupta also spoke at the hearing as an individual. Mr Gupta told the panel that Mr Bourke’s vacant seat should be filled using a by-election, not just a countback.

Farewell the marathon man By XAVIER SMERDON A WERRIBEE man has proved there is no obstacle too great, after he competed in his 25th Melbourne Marathon this month. What makes Ian Gainey’s story even more amazing is the fact that since he contracted polio when he was two-years-old he has been unable to use his legs. Now 61-years old, he has competed in two Paralympics and close to 100 marathons. He also held the world record for wheelchair racing over 10 kilometres in 1986 when he posted a time of just 32 minutes and 23.70 seconds. This month’s Melbourne Marathon was Mr Gainey’s last as he said he will be retiring
from the gruelling sport. “I love the Melbourne Marathon because of the challenge and the fact that it’s my hometown marathon,” Mr Gainey said. “I feel like I’m a part of history having competed in so many.” Mr Gainey first got into wheelchair racing after trying wheelchair basketball, and it has been a part of his life ever since. “I couldn’t compete in able body sports so I thought I would try wheelchair athletics and see how far I could take it,” he said. “When I put my mind to something I don’t give it 50 per cent or 75 per cent, I give it 100 per cent or I don’t do it.” His athletic career has seen
him compete in the Paralympics, carry the Olympic torch during the lead-up to the 2000 Sydney games, break a world record and receive a one-off Australian Sports Medal from former Prime Minister John Howard. And while he would not rule out returning to the sport in the future, Mr Gainey said he felt like he had achieved everything he wanted to. “Anything is possible if you set your mind to it,” he said. “If you go into something half-heartedly you’re not going to get any rewards. “I’m just proud and passionate about being a disabled athlete that’s achieved basically everything I’ve wanted to achieve.”

Kids see puppy love By YASEMIN TALAT STUDENTS at Iramoo Primary School have fallen in love with their newest pupil - a Seeing Eye puppy from Seeing Eye Dogs Australia. School Principal, dog-lover and one-time breeder Moira Findlay has opened the doors of her home and her school to help raise the Seeing Eye Puppy. Farrow, the eight-week Golden Labrador, accompanies Ms Findlay to school every day and will do so for the next 12 months. “She goes with me wherever I go,” Ms Findlay said. And the children, and staff, at Iramoo love the newest edition to the community. “It just makes everybody
feel good to have this puppy around,” Ms Findlay said. “Even if you’re not feeling happy you can’t help but smile when you look at her,” she said. Ms Findlay said having Farrow around would be an opportunity for students to watch and track the pup’s development over the next 12 months. She will send a weekly email update to the classrooms so the students can be engaged in Farrow’s development. “She is a beautiful girl and she will be a wonderful Seeing Eye dog for a very lucky person one day,” Ms Findlay said. Ms Findlay’s first email update to the student introduced Farrow to all the students and ensured the students understood the significant role of the pup.
Ms Findlay said the students understood that Farrow was not a pet but a working dog. “She is a very special puppy and will grow up to be a dog with a very important job,” she told students. Seeing Eye Dogs Australia, a division of Vision Australia, are desperately seeking generous puppy carers to volunteer their time and love to help care for a puppy just like Farrow. The puppy caring program requires volunteers to look after puppies from eight weeks to 12 months of age with all costs covered by SEDA. To become a puppy carer or for more information visit www.seda.org.au or call 1800 037 773.

ART will come to life later this month when an entire school of talented students show off their unique creations. Students from Stella Maris Catholic Primary School in Point Cook have been working for one whole term to discover the greater effects art can have on people and communities, all while creating their own masterpieces. The school’s art teacher, Tess Righetti, told Star that the Stella Maris Comes Alive exhibition would show how the students had interpreted the philosophy that “artists reflect the changing identity of a society through creative expression”.
And while it might sound like a complex notion for students aged from five to 12-years-old, Ms Righetti said they had been given an in-depth insight to the world of art and had surprised even her with what they had done with the information. “Our students have been immersed in a wide range of experiences designed to deepen their understanding of this inquiry,” Ms Righetti said. “They’ve been talking to artists and attending exhibitions to see how the artists enliven the community. “They’re imaginations are just boundless and the depth of their thinking is amazing.” Ms Righetti said the students
had now learned what it means to be an artist. “I think they’ve come to view themselves as artists,” she said. “When we started this we asked them to draw what they thought an artist looked like and they all drew berets and moustaches. “Now I think they view everyone as having creative potential and it’s quite a turnaround.” The Stella Maris Comes Alive Outdoor Art Exhibition will be held at 54-70 Innisfail Drive, Point Cook, on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 October from 6pm. Composer adds another award By YASEMIN TALAT POINT COOK resident and internationally renowned film score composer Chee Wei Tay has received another award to add to his growing collection. The Singapore-born film score composer flew back to Singapore this month to attend the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore Awards, where he received the “Wings of Excellence” Award for his work. The top award recognised Mr Tay’s achievement in producing outstanding music performance internationally. “It’s humbling,” Mr Tay said. Mr Tay has composed music for films and documentaries
for many international channels including Discovery Channel, National Geographic, Animal Plant and PBS. But his successful career almost never took-off. At 16 he applied to study music in California but his parents were against him pursuing music, preferring him to be a doctor instead. “I thought that was the end of it so I went to the army,” Mr Tay said. But it was only the beginning. During his army years Mr Tay was part of a music and drama company where he continued to engage in his love of music. After years of struggles and
trying to find his niche he finally had his big break when a friend asked him to write music for a film. Although even then Mr Tay wasn’t convinced his career would kick off. “I thought it was going to be my last project,” he said. “I wrote the music for it, and started packing everything up.” “A few months later it won every major award in Singapore and production companies started calling me to write music for them.” Mr Tay has since also garnered many nominations and wins at international award ceremonies such as Cannes Film Festival, Seoul International Short Film Festival and Lyon Asian Film Festival.

Rifle stolen By XAVIER SMERDON POLICE are searching for a man they believe stole a rifle from a vehicle in Hoppers Crossing earlier this year. A Victoria Police spokesperson said it was believed the .22 calibre rifle along with ammunition, a bag, wallet and camera were taken from an unlocked white 2008 Ford ute parked in the Hogans Rd carpark around 10.15pm on 2 August. A man described as Caucasian, around 40-years-old, with a medium build and dark short hair is thought to have been involved in the crime. According to CCTV footage he was seen wearing reading glasses and a dark coloured hooded jumper. Anyone with information about the incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

SENIOR residents across Wyndham have been enjoying the fun-filled Seniors Festival activities this October and there’s a heap more before the festival wraps up at the of the month. Residents at Manor Court Aged Care in Werribee have had a great time so far enjoying movie days, watching the Police band perform and participating in Tai Chi classes amongst other things. Lifestyle co-ordinator at Manor Court Sharon Smith said the residents really enjoyed all the activities. “They’ve had heaps of fun,” Ms Smith said. Last week residents also participated in National Bandana Day 2013, a separate activity to help raise money for CanTeen organisation. They helped raise money for young people living with cancer. And the festivities don’t stop for the residents who are also eagerly awaiting the Manor Court Fete which will be held on 7 December at 10am to 2.30pm at the centre. Residents will be knitting and making items that will be for sale on the day and everyone is invited to go along. Fun run challenge By YASEMIN TALAT SCHOOLS are jumping on board a new and healthier way of fundraising by giving the chocolate drive the flick and welcoming the fun-run alternative. Students from Manor Lakes College were ready to go last week as they prepared for their school’s adidas fun run event. Early Years Physical Education Teacher Anthea Walsh said the school wanted to promote healthy lifestyles to students and encourage participation in sports. “To us at Manor Lakes College regular physical activity is an important part of a healthy

lifestyle,” Ms Walsh said. “Making physical activity a priority and encouraging good habits in children from an early age is important and can help them to develop the skills they need to continue being active throughout their lives,” she said. All the students from prep to grade six will take part in the action on Friday. “The students are excited about the fun run,” Ms Walsh said. “The older kids have been talking about how they can beat their efforts last year and the younger kids want to get out and try their best.” Ms Walsh said each year level would be given one hour

to complete as many laps of the lake as they can, raising money for the school along the way. Ms Walsh said the fundraiser had a list of benefits for students which included promoting healthy growth and development, building strong bones and muscles and an opportunity for students to make friends. The money raised will be used to buy new sporting equipment for the school. The adidas School Fun-Run was launched in 2011 as an alternative to junk-food fundraising. A NEW dedicated dog park has opened at Saltwater Reserve in Point Cook. Iramoo Ward Councillor Peter Maynard said the dedicated dog space was at least the size of five tennis courts. It also has park seating and trees planted along the perimeter for dog owners to enjoy. “The Saltwater Reserve dog park is fully enclosed and allows dogs to run and exercise off the lead,” Cr Maynard said. Alamanda Oval, which was used as a dog park while Saltwater Reserve was being completed, will now be a dog on lead park. “Dogs that are well socialised and exercised are likely to be happier, healthier and less aggressive so I encourage you to make use of the dog park at Point Cook’s Saltwater Reserve, which provides a safe community setting where dogs can play with each other,” Cr Maynard said. Community code red By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM will be in a code red situation later this month with the council and emergency response agencies to simulate an emergency situation. Wyndham Mayor Heather Marcus said Wyndham Council would have over 100 participants involved in the practice exercise, which would help train staff and the community in how to respond to an emergency. “We have residents from Heathglen Retirement Village, employees from Saffron Kitchens, members of the local Indian community, students from Manor Lakes and members of the Victorian Council of
Churches, Red Cross, the Department of Human Services, Victoria Police, the Country Fire Authority and the State Emergency Services all participating,” Cr Marcus said. Cr Marcus said the emergency exercise was being led by Wyndham and Melton Councils and it would become a model for resource-sharing in other regions across Victoria. “We have 60 Wyndham City staff involved, who will practice using the Standard Operating Guidelines developed for the Emergency Relief Centre (ERC) at the Wyndham Vale Community Learning Centre and who will also operate the Emergency Coordination Cen-
tre at the Wyndham City Depot,” she said. “Both of these centres will be fully activated for the day and staff will practice responding to a simulated fire emergency. “Staff from 14 other NorthWestern Metropolitan Councils are involved in the day, which will test a regional framework for sharing resources and understanding shared procedures and training in case we ever have a large scale emergency. “Emergency events can occur at any time so we’re work closely with emergency services and the community to make sure we’re ready to assist our community in an emergency.”

Children’s week celebration By YASEMIN TALAT CHILDREN’S Week 2013 is in full swing this week with a whole bunch of activities planned. Wyndham’s popular feature event, the Children’s Week Picnic, will be held this Sunday 27 October from 10am to 4pm at Werribee Park. The free family event is expected to be bigger than ever this year with the Despicable Me Minions also attending. The minions will perform two shows and have a meet and greet with the children. Wyndham City Councillor Glenn Goodfellow said it was a great opportunity for children to play the day away and invited all families to attend. “Families are encouraged to bring a picnic basket and a rug to enjoy the parks beautiful surroundings,” Cr Goodfellow said. The day’s festivities will also include a live band, the Street Surfer Bus, circus workshops, ten pin bowling alley, rock climbing wall, ball games, dancing and much more. Children will also have the opportunity to recycle their old toys on the day and replace them with different ones. $5.95 dise: A gift with their team’s logo or colours will always be appreciated by the sports fans in the office, while practical gear like golf tees, is also an option. - Something sweet: Who doesn’t enjoy indulging? Shortbread, biscuits, chocolates and gingerbread are a great idea, and if you’re good in the kitchen, you could even make the gift yourself. -Desk decoration: If your workplace allows you to personalise your desk, consider giving a small picture frame or easy-to-maintain potted plant. -Movie tickets: If the price parameters of your Kris Kringle allows, movie tickets can be a no-fuss, satisfaction
guaranteed gift option. - Cookbook: Recipe books don’t have to be big and expensive - there are many mini versions on offer that are cheap, cheerful and sure to please. What to avoid: - Anything ‘adult’ or offensive: These items are not appropriate in the office and could land you in hot water. -Anything too personal or expensive: You don’t want the gift recipient to feel uncomfortable either because of the gift or how much you paid for it. - Anything humiliating: Never buy a gift for a colleague that could be considered a personal attack such as odour-related products.

EACH year the festive season rolls around, there is often the workplace Kris Kringle being held. This can be a tough present to buy, as you may draw the name of someone you don’t know very well, or are unsure what to buy for the $20 or so limit. It’s always a good idea to consider the type of person you have and what their interests are. Do they enjoy music, collect something, play a sport or fish in their spare time? If you are still stuck, ask a close friend or colleague of theirs for some ideas. There are also some ‘don’ts’ when it comes to workplace gift giving, so check out this list of tips: Easy ideas: -A new mug or reusable cup: Pick a bright colour or pattern, include a small box of good quality tea or coffee (or fill with lollies/ chocolates), and you’ve got a simple, satisfying and stress-free gift. -Sporting gear or merchan-

Hub has heart for homeless CALLING all young people spending Christmas away from family and loved ones this year. Come and check out the Holiday’s @ the Hub event on 25 December from 11am to 4pm and enjoy some good company and lots of fun. The Youth Junction Inc manages the Visy Cares Hub in Sunshine which is the largest collocated youth centre in Australia. Qualified and experienced
staff work with young people between the ages of 12 to 25 from all over Victoria, but specifically focus on Melbourne’s Western metropolitan region. Over the last year, they have noticed an increasing number of young people that spend the Christmas/holiday period alone and with little opportunity to enjoy that time of year when other young people are able to. The organisation believes
in giving every young person the opportunity to socialise and have fun. This year, The Youth Junction Inc. has decided to open the doors of the Visy Cares Hub in order to encourage those young people to enjoy Christmas Day with food, company and gifts. If you would like any other information, contact Dale Doran or Stephanie James on 9091 8200.
Young people spending Christmas away from their families this year can come to Holidays @ the Hub.

Christmas decor brings cheer GETTING into the Christmas spirit can be difficult, but there’s nothing like decorating to add some holiday cheer to your home. Whether you choose to go full throttle with a total home festive makeover or would rather take baby steps and introduce a few decorations to some areas, there are hundreds of easy and creative ideas to use as a guide. Start with the Christmas tree. Here
is where decorating normally starts and ends for many families, so it’s important to get it right. Choosing the ‘perfect’ tree is an exciting event which could become a family tradition, for children and adults alike. With such a large range of artificial or natural Christmas trees, buyers will need to work out prior to purchase what their budget is, and size requirements. You may choose a colour scheme or
theme for the decorations. If the tree is an irregular shape, try inserting metallic balloons into the gaps to give a fuller look. Try making small toys that mean a lot to your family into ornaments even plastic flowers for an exciting addition. Table settings are another great way to get into the spirit of the holiday season. Tying a red ribbon in a bow around each chair can dress a table nicely. Var-
ious- sized candles placed into assorted jars is also an easy way to brighten up a table setting. Bring in some foliage from outside and arrange them neatly on a side table or buffet in the dining area as a bed to place platters on. The fragrance of fresh branches adds to the festive atmosphere. A clever way to personalise a mantle is to print off brief messages for your family or friends and frame words
individually and display them at different levels for a creative spread. White fairy lights go a long way in adding ambiance and dressing up a room. Hanging them so they drape vertically down one wall can create a special feature wall behind a buffet table or at the end or a corridor. Keys to tackling the family turkey ten taste better when served because they have time to develop in flavour. Make up batches of cookie dough and wrap them in cling wrap in long rolls and freeze. Then simply cut and bake when required. Same goes for pie pastries. Steaming puddings in coffee mugs gives a beautiful home-made look to the comforting dessert and they are cooked in about 10 minutes because they are smaller servings.

Christmas dinner doesn’t have to be a drama.
HAVE you ever offered to host Christmas dinner at your home and later realised that you might be in over your head? It can be a daunting experience when you’re staring down the cavity of a turkey and wondering exactly what you have got yourself into -but it doesn’t have to be this way. More and more people are opting for a simpler festive menu which still fulfils the once-a-year special dish requirements without all the fuss. It is also an opportunity to make up your own Christmas dishes and make them a new family tradition. Tackling a turkey can be the toughest challenge in food preparation. Give the bird at least 24 hours to thaw completely in the fridge and that’s half the job done. Try barbecuing a butterflied turkey by cutting through the ribcage of the bird and rubbing with sage, seasoning, lemon garlic and olive oil. This cuts cooking time dramatically and can make basting easier. Take your family on an international food journey by choosing a dish or flavour from four different regions and incorporate them into the meal to mix things up. This can be done through marinades, such as Moroccan spiced barbecued meats or curried lentil dishes. A wide selection of salads is a great way to supplement a meal. Make rice, pasta and couscous salads well in advance and keep them in the fridge then bring to room temperature before serving. The best way to ease the pressure of Christmas cooking is to work in advance as much as possible. Christmas puddings, cake and even cupcakes are the most versatile delights which can be made days and sometimes weeks in advance. They of-

Kretiuk takes charge By LIAM TWOMEY HOPPERS Crossing has pulled off an excellent coaching coup after the club signed Steve Kretiuk into the top job last week. Kretiuk brings a wealth of experience to the role after an AFL career which boasted 170 games for the Western Bulldogs. Post playing, he was also head coach of TAC Cup side the Western Jets and helped AFL players such as Adam Kennedy, Will Hoskin-Elliott and Elliott Kavanagh get drafted. Kretiuk finished at the Jets in 2012 and undertook a role performing opposition analysis with the Brisbane Lions last season. He said he is looking forward to coaching again. “What really appealed to me was what they (Hoppers Crossing) want from their coach,” Kretiuk said.
“What they want is a development program to help out that success they have had in the under-18s to try and bring those players through to play senior footy. “That is similar to a program that we ran at the Jets. It is about getting these guys to play the best footy that they can. “I am really excited to be a part of that.” The arrival of Kretiuk is a big boost for the Warriors after losing a number of experienced players since the season finished. As well as former coach David Mitchell departing, club captain Brad Murphy has also moved on. Kade Carey, James Mulligan and Brodie Moles will also not return in 2014. Despite only being in the role for a short time, Kretiuk is already looking for some quality replacements.
“We are talking to a few players now but nothing is set in stone,” he said. “We just have to wait and see what happens over the next couple of weeks. Local footy has changed a lot since I played and the amount of money and resources needed to try and get these guys across makes it more difficult. “One thing that Hoppers has that no other club has, in definitely the WRFL but also the EDFL, is their change rooms and facilities. It is an amazing set-up. “That should be one of the appealing factors as well as the program we are running.” In other WRFL coaching news, Jesse Smith will take over at Yarraville-Seddon, replacing David Connell. Altona and Spotswood are both yet to name replacements for Anthony Eames and Chris O’Keefe respectively.

More gold medal runs for Western Aths By LIAM TWOMEY WESTERN Athletics are the kings of the cross country season. The club dominated the competition throughout the winter, claiming four premierships as well as celebrating a host of outstanding individual efforts. Western Athletics won the under 20 women’s division as well as the under 14, 16 and 18 age groups in the boys events.
All divisions are contested statewide. Cross country team manager Phil Dunstone was rapt with the club’s efforts. “To win four premierships in divisions all under 20 is a brilliant achievement for all our juniors,” he said. “Especially in the under 18 and under 16 category. There are a lot of kids in that category that are doing those races statewide. It takes a lot of commitment from our athletes and coaches and it is
great that they have been able to produce these wonderful results.” After its best cross country season to date, Dunstone said the next step was to help these young stars transition into senior competition. “One of the things that we have to be mindful of is that we have had periods like this before and we tend to lose some of them when they are in their early twenties,” he said. “One of our key strategies is to at-

tract new talent and also retain these kids. That is the challenge for the club. We will see what happens in five years’ time. We will lose a few but hopefully we will retain a few as well.” There hasn’t been much time to rest for Western Athletics with the summer season kicking off last week. Athletes took to Williamstown Athletics Track for round one of competition.
WERRIBEE is in the box seat after day one of its Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association clash with Altona. The Tigers won the toss and batted first, making the most of the perfect conditions. Werribee posted 5/262 following a brilliant century from Tim O’Brien. After walking to the crease with the score at 2/31, O’Brien was dominant in the middle as he continued his outstanding form from last season. He finished on 122 not out at the conclusion of the Tigers’ 80 overs. Michael Freeman also made 57 while Adam Alifraco added an important 34 coming in at number seven. In reply, Altona will need to make 263 if the A’s are going to claim their second successive win to start the season. While not everything went their way with the ball, Andrew McCammond was again impressive with a bag of three wickets. The haul adds to his five wickets in round one. The match will resume on Saturday at Chirnside Park. Also in the VSDCA, Williamstown has set Melton 208 runs for victory after day one of their clash. The Seagulls were led by captain Craig Sheedy who made 99 not out from number three. Sheedy came in with the score on 1/19 and batted through the innings. He was well supported by Mathew Inness who also made 42. In other matches, Endeavour Hills will need to chase down 210 if it is to topple Yarraville. Batting first, the Eagles were led by Adam Yates and Tim McRae who both made 60. After losing its last wicket in the 79th over, Yarraville was out in the field for a dangerous 10 over spell. However, the Endeavour Hills’ opening batsmen were up to the challenge and ticked the score over to 0/10 at the close of play. The match will resume at 1pm this week.

A fine knock draws to a close By LIAM TWOMEY BEFORE a ball had been bowled in the 2013/14 cricket season, Neil Temby was raising his bat. However, this was for no ordinary milestone. When Temby arrived for the first training session of the new summer, it marked his 50th consecutive season with the St John’s Cricket Club in Williamstown. Since joining the club as a nine-year-old in 1963, Temby has made its Kororoit Creek Road base his own during a stunning career. While his 7791 runs and 783 wickets are amazing individual achievements, the now 59-year-old said it was the search for team success which continued to bring him back, Saturday after Saturday. Throughout his career, the now Point Cook resident has played in 10 premiership-winning sides - including with his father (‘84/’85), his brother David (‘97/’98) and most recently both his sons, Daniel and Jacob in (‘02/’03). “My father played for St John’s and he was a real club person. That stream of loyalty was passed through to myself and I have kept playing here,” Temby said. “When I was 21 or 22, I had a bloke who had played a lot of cricket with me. He was the best man at my wedding. “We used to joke with each other and say, how would it be if we had two boys and they both ended up playing at the same cricket club. “Twenty years later, both of them are playing and they have both been captains and they have both played in grand-finals.” While Temby is quick to deflect his individual accolades, there is no denying his place among the greats of the Western Suburbs United Churches Cricket Association. As well as his 10 flags, he is a former St John’s captain, has scored the most runs and taken the most wickets in the club’s history and is a hall of fame member. And just to put some icing on top of the already enormous cake, he claimed a hat-trick all the way back in the under-16s.

With a resume of that quality, it is no surprise he is also a member of the WSUCCA Team of the Century. “When I hear my boys say, you were picked in the team of the century, then that is great,” Temby said. “When you look at it, from 1954 to 2003 (team of the century years), that is a long time so just to get your name mentioned in the same sentence as a few of those players is a great honour. I don’t perceive myself as being in the same category to be quite honest. “But if someone said to me, what are your highlights, I wouldn’t say being picked in that team. I would say playing with my dad, playing with my family and playing for this club.” After half a century of terrorising batsmen and dispatching bowlers, Temby will hang up the boots at the end of the 2013/’14 season. That begs the question, how does St John’s go about replacing 460 matches, 4857 overs and 390 innings worth of experience in the middle? Club secretary Graeme McGuinness said Temby’s mentoring of young players would leave St John’s in a position of strength. “Neil is a great mentor for these young guys,” McGuinness said. “Yes we are going to lose his experience but the work he has done teaching these guys will still be here. “In terms of team morale and the batting and bowling, on the field, you can’t replace him. You can’t buy that experience coming into the side.
“You can’t replace someone who has scored that many runs, taken that many wickets and has 50 years of experience. But also he is just such a great club person.” Temby’s son Daniel added that he was a long way off trying to match his father’s records but would miss having him out in the middle. “It’s been a great experience,” Daniel said. “I was lucky enough to captain a side that he played in and we won a premiership. I’ve just been lucky I guess that I have been able to play with my father, uncle and brother. “I think I’ve played about 22 or 23 years at the moment so it will depend how the body holds up. Fifty is a long way off for me.” Before he officially retires, the St John’s Cricket Club will be holding a special celebratory game on Saturday 18 January. For the final time, Temby will line up with his sons and brother as the club mounts yet another premiership assault to finish the season. “I have always been lucky because my mates were my cricket buddies,” Temby said. “Where some people finish playing cricket and go and find their mates, mine were the same people. That always keeps you around. “There is no question that it is sad. I’ve finished playing with my family and close friends. The fun that we have before we go on, during the game and after the game, I will miss all that stuff.”
Neil Temby’s 50 years at the St John’s Cricket Club: •Been a 10-time premiership player •Played in premiership winning sides with his father, brother and two sons •Scored the most runs and taken the most wickets in the club’s history •Was selected in the Western Suburbs United Churches Cricket Association Team of the Century •Was the fifth member of the St John’s Cricket Club to be inducted into the Hall of Fame •Claimed a hat-trick while playing in the juniors •Is a former club captain and club secretary •Is the longest serving player on the club’s list •Played representative cricket for and is a life member of the WSUCCA

A world of Lynx support By LIAM TWOMEY MINNESOTA Lynx supporters know how to get behind their team. After claiming the WNBA title, 2000 fans were waiting at the airport for the Lynx players to arrive home. From there, a further 20,000 supporters lined the streets for a championship parade. One of the players they turned out to see was Australian rising star and Point Cook local Rachel Jarry. “It was amazing,” Jarry said of the championship celebrations. “After the game in Atlanta we had a big party with all our friends and family and the next day we flew back. “To have 20,000 people lining the streets, it is unbelievable the amount of support we get over there. “I’ve never seen anything like it. The one thing you can compare it to here in Australia is the grand final parade for AFL. It is like that, there are so many people who come out to see you and the amount of joy that we bring to them, it is crazy.” In what was her first year in the WNBA, Jarry played in 27 regular season matches for Minnesota and averaged a tick under seven minutes of court time per game. Twice she was able to score into double figures with her 14 points against Seattle in August a standout. Throughout the finals series, she had almost 10 minutes of court time and scored two points. Jarry was rapt with her development over the season. “I loved it,” Jarry said.
“I was a bit nervous the first few games but it is almost like a show. Especially for Minnesota, we get the best crowds. I think our lowest crowd for the year was about 10,000 so playing in front of that every night is amazing. “Being a rookie over there is tough. It is definitely a veteran’s league. I was the youngest on my team by a fair way. For me it was a massive learning experience. “When I did get on the court, I was really happy with how I went. To me it is just about building on that and using all my experiences to keep getting better.” Her latest achievement continues what has been an amazing start to Jarry’s career, with the 21-year-old’s WNBA Championship joining her Olympic bronze medal in her trophy cabinet. “The two (WNBA finals and Olympics) were probably similar crowds but then totally different in a way,” Jarry said. “At the Olympics, every final is do-or-die so you have that added pressure. “For me, playing for Australia is the most important thing in my career. The finals in the WNBA, there is a lot of pressure but it is also the best of five so you’ve always got that back up. We were so focused that we knew we could come out and win every game which we did.” Since retuning home, there has been no rest for Jarry who helped her WNBL side, the Melbourne Boomers to a win last week. As well as returning to the WNBA next season, she also has one eye on next year’s World Championship, which take place in September.

Club break-in a low act WHAT kind of person breaks into a local sporting club? One of our local cricket clubs was burgled recently and a few things were stolen and some damage caused. What were the thieves hoping to get. A safe with a million dollars in it ? Not likely. They might get some alcohol, but almost everything else is of no value to anyone, but those involved at the club. Local sports clubs are run on the smell of an oily rag, by volunteers who do it for love, and to disrespect them like that, is disgusting. If you know anything about any of these types of robberies speak up. These acts are senseless, mindless and fruitless. GREAT move by Hoppers Crossing Football Club to appoint Steven Kretiuk as the senior coach replacing David Mitchell. “Krusher” is a Western Suburbs sporting hero, having played 170 games for the Bulldogs in a very celebrated career. Since his playing days he has coached at the Western Jets and was an assistant at Werribee under Simon Atkins. What he brings to the club in football knowledge is enormous, but on top of that his qualities as a person are cream on the top. Hoppers have won the last four under-18 premierships but have failed to build that success into anything tangible at senior level, unlike Spotswood who had a similar run a few years back. The local footy clubs that build their future on their juniors will be the long-term winners, and they will have sustainable success. In another move, I am not surprised that Deer Park assistant Craig Clinnick has scored a job as senior coach of Strathmore, he is a very smart football person and also, well done to Yarraville Seddon Eagles, securing Jesse Smith the former Kangaroo and Saints AFL player as coach for 2014.
PLENTY of local interest at last Sunday’s Horsham Cup with the favourite for the race, Bec Said No Credit, partly owned by former Western Bulldogs director Darren Dean and reigning Barry Priest medallist Chris O’Keefe. Unfortunately the horse did not salute the judges, running well back in the field. If you are wondering about the name it comes from the yearling sales where the horse was purchased. After being the successful bidder, Dean went to settle the transaction in the usual manner of a line of credit but was turned down by the girl behind the counter, and her name was Rebecca. Get it? As Sam Kekovich says - You know it makes sense. WHILE on horse names, Scharlaine Cairns who was a recent finalist in the Football Woman of the Year Award, always names the horses she is involved with, with a Western Bulldogs flavour. Scharlaine is a devout Bulldog, as is her mother Olive, and they are always at the Doggies games and functions, and have been since the late Ted Whitten was a boy. Following in the footsteps of Minson, She’s Ayce, Dahlhaus Day and Cross Street comes the latest horse which got a run in Warrnambool last Thursday. It is called Shop Early, an expression the late, great Charlie Sutton used, to explain to his players to get in first with the tough stuff before they got you. I am not sure of any future names, but surely ‘ustuckitupthem’ must be on the agenda. DRIVING the Mitsubishi iMiev is like nothing you have ever driven before. The i-MiEV is 100 per cent electric, so it produces no drivetime emissions. It’s a simple equation - zero pollution equals zero CO2 released into the earth’s atmosphere. It is both relaxing and exciting in equal measures. There is no noise, just the whisper of rubber and asphalt; there is no vibration as there are in petrol engines; there are no fumes and progression is silky smooth since you never change gear. The i-MiEV’s advanced electric motor requires no conventional transmission. There is no clutch between the motor and gearbox, which makes the design simpler than a con-
