Prime land sale By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK City Council has announced a proposal to sell 1.9 hectares of land at Furlong Rd and Cairnlea Drive, in place of building a civic centre on the site. The council’s plan comes weeks after Cairnlea residents expressed anger at a separate proposal from Places Victoria, which would allow 146 new townhouses, 50 apartments and 80 commercial sites to be built in the suburb. The Places Victoria proposal concerns land bordered by Cairnlea Drive, Ballarat Rd and the Western Ring Rd. The 1.9 hectares, which council hopes to sell, is located around the corner. Last week, council director Paul Younis said the council would engage in public consultation before deciding whether to sell the land. The site, which has been vacant for 13 years, was previously considered as a potential location to build a new civic centre or municipal building for Brimbank. However, the council has decided they will redevelop the Sunshine Library instead. He said the Furlong Rd address,

if sold, could be used for low or medium-density housing, retail or commercial purposes. Cairnlea resident Paul Landry said residents remained concerned about the potential industrialisation of their leafy estate. He said in regards to the Places Victoria proposal, residents have been worried about multi-storey apartments, extra traffic, a lack of public transport, contamination and decreased property values. “Our quality of life, our lifestyles, our standard of living are being compromised,” Mr Landry said. He said a Places Victoria public information session, held earlier this month, raised more questions than answers for attendees. A Places Victoria spokesperson said during September and October, a four-week consultation process with residents was advertised in newspapers and letters were sent to surrounding residents. The spokesperson said the proposed land uses, road networks and key features of the site had been set out in a draft version of the Cairnlea Mixed Use Precinct, but subdivision, lot yield and lot sizes would be determined at the planning permit application stage.

By ALESHA CAPONE A TEENAGER who was shot near St Albans Secondary College last Tuesday reportedly returned to school two days later in a ‘fine’ condition. The 17-year-old male victim was shot at from the window of a car, as he walked along Beaver St shortly after midnight. The boy was reportedly with a group of other students, travelling to school to plan a flour-bombing as part of a ‘muck-up day’ prank. After the shooting, the student was taken to Sunshine Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and later released. Detective Senior Constable Paul Ziebell told Channel 7 police believed the boy was possibly fired at with a shotgun. “He had two wounds - the first wound was to the right side of the head and the second wound was to the right arm,” Det Sen Const Ziebell said. “It has the ability to be a fatal shooting, of course.” Detectives were still investigating the shooting as Star went to print. One of the teenager’s friends told Star he saw the victim back at school last Thursday. “I’ve been in touch with the student and his family and he is fine,” St Albans Secondary College principal Kerrie Dowsley said. “The incident you refer to took place away from the school, outside school hours and, as such, was not related to our school’s procedures or events.”

AN INDEPENDENT study has revealed that night-time train commuters feel much safer when Protective Services Officers (PSOs) are manning their train station. Market research consultants DBM carried out the study across a selection of stations patrolled by PSOs - including Yarraville, South Yarra, Noble Park, Epping, Frankston and Box Hill - to determine how effective the officers were in maintaining perceptions of public safety. The study found: Night-time train users gave PSOs almost universal approval, with 94 per cent agreeing that PSOs are a good idea and 93 per cent keen to seek their help if they felt unsafe; 94 per cent of night-time train users reported having seen PSOs on patrol, and those commuters who knew that PSOs patrolled their station felt safer; and Two-thirds of parents said they would be happier about their children travelling by train at night, now that PSOs are patrolling. PSOs guard the stations in pairs between 6pm and the last train and are equipped with the same weapons as police. They also have the authority to shoot as a last resort. There are currently 488 PSOs working at 79 train stations across the network. The State Government has promised to deploy 940 PSOs across Melbourne’s train stations by November 2014.

Talks over noise walls By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK City Council has voted to ask Regional Rail Link Authority to hold another community forum, in a decision which was met with resounding applause from residents last week. At last Tuesday’s council meeting, two of the Brimbank administrators considered an assessment of the noise walls which the RRLA has proposed to install along the Deer Park rail corridor. After hearing the report, chair of the administrators John Watson moved an alternative motion to defer the matter and use the council’s “best endeavours” to ask the RRLA

Authority to convene a community information session. Claps and calls of “well done” erupted from residents sitting in the gallery when Mr Watson made the announcement. Neighbours who live near the RRL works and members of the Fix the Links Residents Rail Action Group have been voicing their concerns about an increase in noise, pollution and traffic congestion in the area. Resident Maurice Sibelle last week posted a notice on the Fix the Links blog, calling for another protest rally to be held on Friday 1 November in Sunshine. The council assessment of the

proposed RRL noise walls said they would be built between Sunshine to Deer Park, at an average height of 2.5 metres. A timber wall at an average height of 2.3 metres has been proposed to go along the back fences of most residential properties between Station Rd and Robinsons Rd. A RRLA spokeswoman said residents could contact the authority “at any time to discuss their issues or concerns”. “In recent weeks, we have made direct contact with all owners and occupiers of affected properties through personally addressed letters, doorknocks and meeting opportunities,” she said.

“At the beginning of October we doorknocked more than 300 households in the Sunshine - Deer Park area and spoke about the design of the noise treatments, including landscaping and the materials involved. “Prior to this, we held a series of community information sessions on noise treatments between Sunshine and Deer Park in May and June this year.” The spokeswoman said more than 16,000 homes were advised of the sessions via mail. “Following this community liaison and these information sessions, there are no further sessions planned,” she said.

Teen makes fashion sensation By ALESHA CAPONE AN AWARD-WINNING gown designed by talented teenager Adieu Kuir would not look out of place at a glamourous Hollywood awards night. The 17-year-old student from St Albans Secondary College took out first place in the Long Gown section of the Fashion Awards Australia (FAA) grand finale in September. This month, Brimbank City Council presented Adieu, three other pupils and the school with certificates to recognise their success at the FAAs. After entering the awards for nine years, this year the college received the John Claringbold Memorial School Cup for the first time. The cup is given to whichever school accumulates the most points across all categories on the night. Adieu said she won the Long Gown section, thanks to the support of her teachers including Michael Bowden and Nick D’Aglas. The modest Adieu said she did not expect to win a prize at the fashion awards. “I almost had a heart attack. I just couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I literally couldn’t breathe, it was amazing. Just seeing the other designs was great and I couldn’t take my eyes off them. “What made me cry was after the school won the award and my teacher Mr Bowden said to me that it was also the first time the school ever won the Long Gown section.” “Fashion design has always been my dream but I am also interested in psychology, health and art,” she said. Mr D’Aglas said the judges from the FAAs were impressed with Adieu’s talent. “She’s made a huge splash in the Melbourne fashion scene and she hasn’t even realised,” he said.

Police seize 100 cannabis plants By ALESHA CAPONE POLICE are still investigating after confiscating around 100 cannabis plants from a ‘hydroponic house’ in St Albans. On 17 October, officers from the Keilor Downs Police Station executed a search warrant at an Ironbark St home. Apart from the cannabis plants, they also uncovered growing equipment at the residence. Acting Sergeant Chris White said an investigation into the occupants of the house was ongoing. Acting Sgt White said there was “limited evidence” at the crime scene to suggest there was someone sitting there and watching the crop”- a “potential crop-sitter”. He said police found a combination of mature and juvenile plants at the St Albans abode. Acting Sgt White said a mature cannabis plant could be worth around $8000, although the entire crop from the Ironbark St address was not at this stage. “Potentially if all the plants had reached full maturity you could have had an $800,000 crop - but many of the plants we took were much smaller,” he said. When police arrived at the crophouse, they called Brimbank SES in to dismantle an illegal power bypass which had been installed at the property. The SES also provided lights on-site into the evening, as police officers emptied the home of cannabis plants. Acting Sgt White said Brimbank police have recently attended “a lot of similar jobs” to the St Albans crop-house. “People seem to be of the opinion that if they keep renting houses and continuing with this kind of behaviour, they will get away with it - which is definitely not the case,” he said. “Our blokes just seem to set up in rental houses under whatever names they’re using and fill the rooms with plants and they just keep growing them until the real estate agent realises and clears them out or until the crop reaches maturity.” Anyone with information about crop-houses can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Siblings draw on creative talents 2013 Annual Meeting

A TRIO of talented siblings have all won prizes in a dinosaur colouring competition run by the Watergardens Town Centre. Brothers Denten and Winton, along with little sister Darleen, are aged nine, seven and four years respectively. The youngsters, who attend St Mary MacKillop Catholic Primary School in Keilor Downs, have all succeeded in the artistic contest. Denten was the overall major prize winner of a Dino Pack worth $100, while Winton and Darleen were named among 20 runners-up in the competition. Proud mother, Seree Lou, said her children have always loved being creative and their home in Taylors Lakes is festooned with their works. “Darleen, my littlest, was holding her first pen correctly and drawing away at four months old and used a pair of scissors by one year old and she hasn’t stopped since,” Ms Lou said. “They have always been encouraged, nurtured and reminded by us, as their parents, to be

New chief acts on violence By XAVIER SMERDON THE new CEO of the West’s largest advocacy group has promised to focus more on social issues like violence against women. Craig Rowley was confirmed as the CEO of LeadWest earlier this month after Anton Mayer retired from the top job. Mr Rowley comes from a background of both public and private enterprises and has lived in the West for over 10 years with his wife and two children. He was also involved in corporate and community development with Stonnington Council. It was this experience that Mr Rowley said made him

want to join an organisation like LeadWest. “With my job I would drive through Toorak and see the big mansions before driving home to the West,” he said. “It made me think how different our communities were and how I’d like to give something back to the West.” Mr Rowley said during his tenure as CEO of LeadWest there would be better engagement between all members of the group so that they “can see the fruits of their efforts translate into results”. He also said there would be a renewed focus on social issues that would in turn improve the West’s financial outlook.

“When you look at issues like preventing violence against women, the investment isn’t very high, yet a reasonable amount of money can make a huge difference to people’s lives,” he said. “If we can make a difference in some of these areas then we can increase people’s opportunities to participate.” Mr Rowley also said that while Maribyrnong Council had signalled that they were planning on leaving LeadWest, they would still be members for another two years. He said he could see potential that the council would change its mind in that time and remain members of LeadWest.

Top art AN ARRAY of art created by students from the Catholic Regional College in St Albans was on show last week. Pupils exhibited works from ceramics to painting, and flowers fashioned from recycled rubbish. Year 9 pupil Queenie was among the teenagers who had work included in the show, such as her award-winning oil painting. 108110 Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI Western Health physiotherapist Clare Holdsworth and former patient Ian Dodemaide Picture: CONTRIBUTED speaking at the 100 Sunshine website launch. 108756

PATIENTS wishing to thank the staff at Western Health for their care have helped to create an innovative new project. Western Health, which runs Sunshine Hospital, Western Hospital in Footscray and Williamstown Hospital, has developed a new website called ’100 Sunshine’ containing stories from patients, staff and volunteers. Two years ago, a group of former patients from Sunshine, Western and Williamstown hospitals were invited to take part in a forum. At the event, the patients said they were thankful to Western Health employees for helping them throughout the medical process but felt they had no

way of sharing this gratitude - and so the idea for 100 Sunshine was born. Across the past 24 months, the stories of these patients and others - have been collated and photographed for the 100 Sunshine website. Western Health CEO, Associate Professor Alex Cockram, said many patients wanted to thank between 10 to 100 hospital staff. “This means that several thousand staff and many volunteers have been a part of the experiences reflected in 100 Sunshine,” she said. “The 100 Sunshine project is one of the greatest tributes we could pay to our patients and their families, to our staff and

our volunteers. “It reflects the importance of working together to make each person’s experience of care as good as it can possibly be.” The 100 Sunshine project was launched at the recent Open Sunshine Community Day at Sunshine Hospital. Visitors could see the hospital’s $90 million extension and a $51 million research and training building and the Radiation Therapy Centre operated in conjunction with Peter Mac. “It was wonderful to see such a strong sense of celebration throughout the day,” Associate Prof Cockram said. Roadstar Kia’s power to perform KIA Australia has released the allnew turbocharged Kia Cerato Koup in Australia this month, marking the first performance orientated model in the company’s local line-up. A 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, powers the Kia Cerato Koup SX developing 150kW of power at 6000rpm, and 264Nm of torque from 1750-4500rpm, the turbo is the most powerful Koup ever. The Kia Cerato Koup will share the performance limelight with the hotly anticipated Kia Pro_cee’d GT, which will arrive early next year, also powered by the same engine. As well as the turbocharged Kia Koup, a regular 2.0-litre naturally aspirated model will also be in the line-up. Set to replace the outgoing sub$25,000 model, the new 2.0-litre direct injected four-cylinder engine produces 129kW at 6500rpm and 209Nm at 4700rpm, an increase over the outgoing car’s 115kW and 194Nm. Both engines will be available with either a six-speed manual or auto, with Turbo scoring paddle shifters. From the outside the two-door Koup’s design is a change from the previous model’s sedan like shape, with a more sporty focused theme. The previous car’s appeal to the design conscious, but not necessarily performance-focused buyer will change with the arrival of the turbo. All models will have Kia’s FlexSteer steering system that alters weighting between three modes Comfort, Normal, and Sport. All Koup models also run a strutfront, torsion-beam rear suspension set-up. Kia is expected to launch one

With seven seats as standard and an ingenious EZ Flex seating system which makes the third row easily accessible and comfortable for all, the family will board and exit like never before. Once inside, the Tri-Zone climate control, which comes standard across the range, and the Tri-Zone entertainment, available on selected models, will have all occupants wishing journeys were just that little bit longer. The roomy interior of the all-new Nissan Pathfinder has a whopping 2259 litres of cargo space when the second and third row seats are folded flat. The second row splits 60/40, and the third 50/50 to give numerous options for carrying both passengers and awkward loads. Then there’s the ingenious under-floor storage area, with even more room to stow stuff or keep valuables out of sight. The all-new Nissan Pathfinder range offers the option of two wheel drive or intuitive four wheel drive variants, as well as smooth responsive acceleration thanks to the next generation CVT, towing capability and the innovative around view monitor that makes parking safer and easier than ever.

Get down to your local dealership to test drive the all new Nissan Pathfinder. This is the ultimate SUV for the modern family. There is a host of safety features as standard across the range including: five star ANCAP safety rating, six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, reverse parking camera with predictive path technology, reversing sensors, vehicle dynamic control, traction control system, anti-

lock braking system, brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution. To test drive this vehicle, visit Werribee Nissan at 14-26 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, open from Monday to Saturday,
