By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK City Council has announced a proposal to sell 1.9 hectares of land at Furlong Rd and Cairnlea Drive, in place of building a civic centre on the site. The council’s plan comes weeks after Cairnlea residents expressed anger at a separate proposal from Places Victoria, which would allow 146 new townhouses, 50 apartments and 80 commercial sites to be built in the suburb. The Places Victoria proposal concerns land bordered by Cairnlea Drive, Ballarat Rd and the Western Ring Rd. The 1.9 hectares, which council hopes to sell, is located around the corner. Last week, council director Paul Younis said the council would engage in public consultation before deciding whether to sell the land. The site, which has been vacant for 13 years, was previously considered as a potential location to build a new civic centre or municipal building for Brimbank. However, the council has decided they will redevelop the Sunshine Library instead. He said the Furlong Rd address,

if sold, could be used for low or medium-density housing, retail or commercial purposes. Cairnlea resident Paul Landry said residents remained concerned about the potential industrialisation of their leafy estate. He said in regards to the Places Victoria proposal, residents have been worried about multi-storey apartments, extra traffic, a lack of public transport, contamination and decreased property values. “Our quality of life, our lifestyles, our standard of living are being compromised,” Mr Landry said. He said a Places Victoria public information session, held earlier this month, raised more questions than answers for attendees. A Places Victoria spokesperson said during September and October, a four-week consultation process with residents was advertised in newspapers and letters were sent to surrounding residents. The spokesperson said the proposed land uses, road networks and key features of the site had been set out in a draft version of the Cairnlea Mixed Use Precinct, but subdivision, lot yield and lot sizes would be determined at the planning permit application stage.

A YOUNG Taylors Lakes resident is determined to help improve the lives of young Indian girls. Ravneet Mundi, 21, said she spent a semester at an Indian college in her second year at La Trobe University, where she became aware of social issues facing the nation’s females. This year, Ms Mundi received a social leadership fellowship from Teach for India, which aims to eradicate inequity through education. Ms Mundi underwent a month of training before she began teaching a class of 30 girls from the Indian slums. “We were prepared mentally for all the issues we could face in the slums - for example, child abuse,” Ms Mundi said. “A lot of girls are neglected, not wanted or malnourished because of the economic situation they are in. “I had girls passing out in my class because they hadn’t eaten.” Ms Mundi said many parents only sent their daughters to the school for the free governmentprovided meal. While in India, she started personality development workshops so the girls could feel a sense of self-worth and realise education could propel them out of the slums. Ms Mundi said she was devastated when one of her sevenyear-old pupils developed a brain tumour, requiring expensive medical treatment. Tragically, another one of her young students was raped in a case which is now before the Indian courts. Ms Mundi said she visited

The girl lives with her mother and five siblings in a one room house which Ms Mundi described as the size of a bathroom. “I was in shock, I couldn’t believe she lived in these conditions,” Ms Mundi said. Due to Indian hospitals be-

ing understaffed, she personally took the girl’s blood to an STD clinic for testing. Ms Mundi, who visited her parents last week before flying back to India, has started an online campaign to raise money for both of her students and their families. A TEENAGER who was shot near St Albans Secondary College last Tuesday reportedly returned to school two days later in a ‘fine’ condition. The 17-year-old male victim was shot at from the window of a car, as he walked along Beaver St shortly after midnight. The boy was reportedly with a group of other students, travelling to school to plan a flour-bombing as part of a ‘muck-up day’ prank. After the shooting, the student was taken to Sunshine Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and later released. Detective Senior Constable Paul Ziebell told Channel 7 police believed the boy was possibly fired at with a shotgun. “He had two wounds - the first wound was to the right side of the head and the second wound was to the right arm,” Det Sen Const Ziebell said. “It has the ability to be a fatal shooting, of course.” Detectives were still investigating the shooting as Star went to print. One of the teenager’s friends told Star he saw the victim back at school last Thursday. “I’ve been in touch with the student and his family and he is fine,” St Albans Secondary College principal Kerrie Dowsley said. “The incident you refer to took place away from the school, outside school hours and, as such, was not related to our school’s procedures or events.”

Public feels protected By CHARLENE MACAULAY AN INDEPENDENT study has revealed that night-time train commuters feel much safer when Protective Services Officers (PSOs) are manning their train station. Market research consultants DBM carried out the study across a selection of stations patrolled by PSOs - including Yarraville, South Yarra, Noble Park, Epping, Frankston and Box Hill - to determine how effective the officers were in maintaining perceptions of public safety. The study found: Night-time train users gave PSOs almost universal approval, with 94 per cent agreeing that PSOs are a good idea and 93 per cent keen to seek their help if they felt unsafe; 94 per cent of night-time train users reported having seen PSOs on patrol, and those commuters who knew that PSOs patrolled their station felt safer; and Two-thirds of parents said they would be happier about their children travelling by train at night, now that PSOs are patrolling. PSOs guard the stations in pairs between 6pm and the last train and are equipped with the same weapons as police. They also have the authority to shoot as a last resort. There are currently 488 PSOs working at 79 train stations across the network. The State Government has promised to deploy 940 PSOs across Melbourne’s train stations by November 2014.

Talks over noise walls By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK City Council has voted to ask Regional Rail Link Authority to hold another community forum, in a decision which was met with resounding applause from residents last week. At last Tuesday’s council meeting, two of the Brimbank administrators considered an assessment of the noise walls which the RRLA has proposed to install along the Deer Park rail corridor. After hearing the report, chair of the administrators John Watson moved an alternative motion to defer the matter and use the council’s “best endeavours” to ask the RRLA

Authority to convene a community information session. Claps and calls of “well done” erupted from residents sitting in the gallery when Mr Watson made the announcement. Neighbours who live near the RRL works and members of the Fix the Links Residents Rail Action Group have been voicing their concerns about an increase in noise, pollution and traffic congestion in the area. Resident Maurice Sibelle last week posted a notice on the Fix the Links blog, calling for another protest rally to be held on Friday 1 November in Sunshine. The council assessment of the

proposed RRL noise walls said they would be built between Sunshine to Deer Park, at an average height of 2.5 metres. A timber wall at an average height of 2.3 metres has been proposed to go along the back fences of most residential properties between Station Rd and Robinsons Rd. A RRLA spokeswoman said residents could contact the authority “at any time to discuss their issues or concerns”. “In recent weeks, we have made direct contact with all owners and occupiers of affected properties through personally addressed letters, doorknocks and meeting opportunities,” she said.

“At the beginning of October we doorknocked more than 300 households in the Sunshine - Deer Park area and spoke about the design of the noise treatments, including landscaping and the materials involved. “Prior to this, we held a series of community information sessions on noise treatments between Sunshine and Deer Park in May and June this year.” The spokeswoman said more than 16,000 homes were advised of the sessions via mail. “Following this community liaison and these information sessions, there are no further sessions planned,” she said.

Teen makes fashion sensation By ALESHA CAPONE AN AWARD-WINNING gown designed by talented teenager Adieu Kuir would not look out of place at a glamourous Hollywood awards night. The 17-year-old student from St Albans Secondary College took out first place in the Long Gown section of the Fashion Awards Australia (FAA) grand finale in September. This month, Brimbank City Council presented Adieu, three other pupils and the school with certificates to recognise their success at the FAAs. After entering the awards for nine years, this year the college received the John Claringbold Memorial School Cup for the first time. The cup is given to whichever school accumulates the most points across all categories on the night. Adieu said she won the Long Gown section, thanks to the support of her teachers including Michael Bowden and Nick D’Aglas. The modest Adieu said she did not expect to win a prize at the fashion awards. “I almost had a heart attack. I just couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I literally couldn’t breathe, it was amazing. Just seeing the other designs was great and I couldn’t take my eyes off them. “What made me cry was after the school won the award and my teacher Mr Bowden said to me that it was also the first time the school ever won the Long Gown section.” “Fashion design has always been my dream but I am also interested in psychology, health and art,” she said. Mr D’Aglas said the judges from the FAAs were impressed with Adieu’s talent. “She’s made a huge splash in the Melbourne fashion scene and she hasn’t even realised,” he said.

Police seize 100 cannabis plants By ALESHA CAPONE POLICE are still investigating after confiscating around 100 cannabis plants from a ‘hydroponic house’ in St Albans. On 17 October, officers from the Keilor Downs Police Station executed a search warrant at an Ironbark St home. Apart from the cannabis plants, they also uncovered growing equipment at the residence. Acting Sergeant Chris White said an investigation into the occupants of the house was ongoing. Acting Sgt White said there was “limited evidence” at the crime scene to suggest there was someone sitting there and watching the crop”- a “potential crop-sitter”. He said police found a combination of mature and juvenile plants at the St Albans abode. Acting Sgt White said a mature cannabis plant could be worth around $8000, although the entire crop from the Ironbark St address was not at this stage. “Potentially if all the plants had reached full maturity you could have had an $800,000 crop - but many of the plants we took were much smaller,” he said. When police arrived at the crophouse, they called Brimbank SES in to dismantle an illegal power bypass which had been installed at the property. The SES also provided lights on-site into the evening, as police officers emptied the home of cannabis plants. Acting Sgt White said Brimbank police have recently attended “a lot of similar jobs” to the St Albans crop-house. “People seem to be of the opinion that if they keep renting houses and continuing with this kind of behaviour, they will get away with it - which is definitely not the case,” he said. “Our blokes just seem to set up in rental houses under whatever names they’re using and fill the rooms with plants and they just keep growing them until the real estate agent realises and clears them out or until the crop reaches maturity.” Anyone with information about crop-houses can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Siblings draw on creative talents A TRIO of talented siblings have all won prizes in a dinosaur colouring competition run by the Watergardens Town Centre. Brothers Denten and Winton, along with little sister Darleen, are aged nine, seven and four years respectively. The youngsters, who attend St Mary MacKillop Catholic Primary School in Keilor Downs, have all succeeded in the artistic contest. Denten was the overall major prize winner of a Dino Pack worth $100, while Winton and Darleen were named among 20 runners-up in the competition. Proud mother, Seree Lou, said her children have always loved being creative and their home in Taylors Lakes is festooned with their works. “Darleen, my littlest, was holding her first pen correctly and drawing away at four months old and used a pair of scissors by one year old and she hasn’t stopped since,” Ms Lou said. “They have always been encouraged, nurtured and reminded by us, as their parents, to be creative thinkers in self-expression and ‘thinking outside the box’ as an indi-

Leading act By XAVIER SMERDON THE new CEO of the West’s largest advocacy group has promised to focus more on social issues like violence against women. Craig Rowley was confirmed as the CEO of LeadWest earlier this month after Anton Mayer retired from the top job. Mr Rowley comes from a background of both public and private enterprises and has lived in the West for over 10 years with his wife and two children. He was also involved in corporate and community development with Stonnington Council. It was this experience that Mr Rowley said made him want to join an organisation like LeadWest. “With my job I would drive through Toorak and see the big mansions before driving home to the West,” he said. “It made me think how different our communities were and how I’d like to give something back to the West.”

Mr Rowley said during his tenure as CEO of LeadWest there would be better engagement between all members of the group so that they “can see the fruits of their efforts translate into results”. He also said there would be a renewed focus on social issues that would in turn improve the West’s financial outlook. “When you look at issues like preventing violence against women, the investment isn’t very high, yet a reasonable amount of money can make a huge difference to people’s lives,” he said. “If we can make a difference in some of these areas then we can increase people’s opportunities to participate.” Mr Rowley also said that while Maribyrnong Council had signalled that they were planning on leaving LeadWest, they would still be members for another two years. He said he could see potential that the council would change its mind in that time and remain members of LeadWest.

Road claim By ALESHA CAPONE A BROOKLYN business has refuted an MP’s claims that it is attempting to ‘thwart’ Brimbank City Council’s efforts to seal Bunting Rd. The council has proposed a special charges scheme to help fund the road sealing project, to reduce high dust levels emitted from the suburb. But the council’s director of infrastructure and environment, Paul Younis, said VCAT has received number of applications, wanting a review of this decision. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan has told parliament two Brooklyn businesses - Swanmont Pty Ltd and Bunting South Pty Ltd- are among a number which are “refusing to agree” to the special charges. Mr Noonan said these two companies came under the umbrella of the Sunshine Groupe recycling and waste manage-

ment business. However the Sunshine Groupe’s chairman, Tom Buxton, said Mr Noonan has made “widely inaccurate statements about the company’s pollution practices and the issue of the construction of Bunting Rd”. Mr Buxton said it was “wrong” for Mr Noonan to state Swanmont Pty Ltd and Bunting South Pty Ltd were part of the Sunshine Groupe. “Neither of these entities are members of the Sunshine Groupe,” he said. “They, along with the majority of landowners in Bunting Rd, are not objecting to the road as such but to the quantum of the individual amounts being levied and a number of other unresolved issues with the design which council has not been able to satisfactorily resolve. “Members of the Sunshine Groupe welcome plans to up-

grade Bunting Rd because it will increase the efficiency and ease of access for their customers. “However, no member of the Sunshine Groupe is being asked to contribute to the construction costs as they are tenants, not landholders, and therefore are not listed in the upcoming VCAT hearing.” Mr Buxton said Mr Noonan has never contacted the Sunshine Groupe regarding issues in Brooklyn. “I understand he has not contacted any nearby businesses either – many of which have major concerns about the plans,” Mr Buxton said. “I would welcome Mr Noonan at any time should he wish to tour our facility to inspect how we interface with Bunting Rd. “Mr Noonan would do well to tour the area so he can speak from a position of authority in the future.”

By ALESHA CAPONE MORE than 12 million tonnes of commercial and industrial waste is generated every year in Australia - with more than half sent to landfill. The not-for-profit Planet Ark Environmental Foundation has set up a free online directory, BusinessRecycling.com. au, to help cut back on rising rates of landfill. Planet Ark’s recycling programs manager, Janet Sparrow, has urged businesses across Victoria to decrease their waste by visiting the site. “As waste disposal costs increase, it makes financial sense to look for recycling options for the wide range of waste materials generated by businesses,” Ms Sparrow said. In the Brimbank area, the top five materials searched for the BusinessRecycling site include cardboard cartons, video and audio tapes, computers and accessories, office paper and printer cartridges. One business in the West which is featured on the internet page is Transpacific’s Brooklyn Transfer Station. The centre’s operations supervisor, Marcus Steer, said in an average month, the site removes or processes the 230 tonnes of timber, 100 tonnes of hard green waste, 80 tonnes of steel and eight tonnes of cardboard.

The Transpacific Brooklyn Transfer Station processes and removes more than 400 tonnes of material in an average month. Operators pick through the rubble and recycle what Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI they can. 108448 “The facility operates as a drop off point for residential waste, commercial and industrial waste, green waste and kerbside collection waste,” Mr Steer said, “The materials dropped off are then sorted and segregated into items that can be recycled and reused. “The facility is operated by eight employees covering a seven-day roster, with tasks ranging from a gate attendant to machine operators handling

materials.” Mr Steer said Transpacific viewed all waste as a resource and aimed to incorporate recovery, recycling and reuse throughout its operations. “Transfer stations are in integral part of waste and recycling management solutions for local areas, as they help to divert waste away from landfill, saving valuable landfill space and reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

Top art AN ARRAY of art created by students from the Catholic Regional College in St Albans was on show last week. Pupils exhibited works from ceramics to painting, and flowers fashioned from recycled rubbish. Year 9 pupil Queenie was among the teenagers who had work included in the show, such as her award-winning oil painting. 108110 Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI Western Health physiotherapist Clare Holdsworth and former patient Ian Dodemaide Picture: CONTRIBUTED speaking at the 100 Sunshine website launch. 108756

PATIENTS wishing to thank the staff at Western Health for their care have helped to create an innovative new project. Western Health, which runs Sunshine Hospital, Western Hospital in Footscray and Williamstown Hospital, has developed a new website called ‘100 Sunshine’ containing stories from patients, staff and volunteers. Two years ago, a group of former patients from Sunshine, Western and Williamstown hospitals were invited to take part in a forum. At the event, the patients said they were thankful to Western Health employees for helping them throughout the medical process but felt they had no

way of sharing this gratitude - and so the idea for 100 Sunshine was born. Across the past 24 months, the stories of these patients and others - have been collated and photographed for the 100 Sunshine website. Western Health CEO, Associate Professor Alex Cockram, said many patients wanted to thank between 10 to 100 hospital staff. “This means that several thousand staff and many volunteers have been a part of the experiences reflected in 100 Sunshine,” she said. “The 100 Sunshine project is one of the greatest tributes we could pay to our patients and their families, to our staff and

our volunteers. “It reflects the importance of working together to make each person’s experience of care as good as it can possibly be.” The 100 Sunshine project was launched at the recent Open Sunshine Community Day at Sunshine Hospital. Visitors could see the hospital’s $90 million extension and a $51 million research and training building and the Radiation Therapy Centre operated in conjunction with Peter Mac. “It was wonderful to see such a strong sense of celebration throughout the day,” Associate Prof Cockram said. By ALESHA CAPONE WITH her vibrant red hair, Deer Park’s Mimi Velevska stands out as a born entertainer. “To become the performer I aspired to be, I envisioned a glamourous, red-haired diva,” she said. “I envisaged if Tina Turner was the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I envisaged that and wanted to be that.” At just 24 years old, Ms Velevska is already a singer, DJ, radio and television host, songwriter and music journalist. At age 17, she was accepted into the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts to study jazz vocals. “I heard it was hard to get into, but I thought I would just give it a go anyway,” Ms Velevska said. Her Bonafide Electric EP was released last year. She also hosts The Hoist on SYN 90.7 FM every week and is a presenter on Channel 31’s music show, 1700. She has just wrapped up a residency at the Veludo in St Kilda and will DJ at a preconcert party before Bon Jovi performs at Etihad Stadium in December. The high-achiever even has her own small business, Bonafide Entertainment, singing with a band at corporate events, weddings and parties. One Christmas event where Ms Velevska performed includ-

Food for the festivities

1099636-DJ44-13

CHRISTMAS and food are intrinsically linked and many of the memories we have are based around eating. When we think about Christmas, the first thought that often comes up is usually “what are we eating this year?” or “remember how full we were last Christmas?” There are the yearly family discussions of who will be hosting this year’s lunch (or dinner), if Nan is bringing her famous pudding, or what’s best to eat in the hot weather. So it makes sense to give some delicious edible Christmas presents this year. Not only does it make gift giving easier (no late night shopping among the crowds required) but it is also a very thoughtful present which is sure to be enjoyed. For those who enjoy getting messy in the kitchen, this is the cue to source some great ingredients and whip up something wonderful. Think Christmas themed biscuits, cakes, slices, pudding, and make a large batch so your edible gift can be given to a

number of people. This kind of gift will be perfect for the grandparents or parents who have everything or older relatives and friends. Edible Christmas gifts can be as simple as picking out some special sweets, fine wine, or other goodies, which the recipient likes and presenting it well. Source some large baskets or tins, or double up the gift giving by using a cooler bag or a nice platter or bowl, to arrange chosen edible gifts in.

Use some cellophane (large rolls can be purchased), and wrap it up, finishing with a bow or ribbon to create a beautiful edible Christmas hamper. Another idea is to find out which restaurants loved ones often frequent or have been thinking of going, and purchase a gift voucher for a nice meal. This could go in a hamper as an extra bonus, or be presented with a Christmas card. The ideas are endless when it comes to food and gifts, so start planning now.

Politics of the office party THE one rule of hosting a company Christmas party is not to hold it in the office. It’s a good rule to follow. But there are two problems to solve to make the company Christmas party a success. How to get colleagues to show up and how to solve the alcohol dilemma? Tired and stressed employees may be hard to entice into spending even more time with one another, especially if the annual Christmas party has become a tired tradition. Both happiness and safety can be compromised when people are drinking and as a social host, legally organisers have a duty to supervise their guests and make sure they all get home safely if they’re consuming alcohol at a party. Try some of these company

Christmas party ideas to make a party a success. Get out of the night time groove. While people tend to think of parties as evening affairs, they don’t have to be. Even if a company Christmas party idea is to host a meal for guests at a restaurant or hotel, people will drink less at a luncheon rather than a dinner. So just switching the time of day can help make alcohol less of an issue. Break the mould. Whatever a company normally does, change it from year to year. Host a disc golf, skating or bowling party. Remember when choosing a Christmas party idea based on an activity to pick something

that everyone can do. Mix up the guest list. Instead of hosting a Christmas party that’s just for staff, widen the guest list to include extended family, friends, neighbours and business associates. Dealcoholise the Christmas party. There is no rule that alcohol has to be served at a company Christmas party. People can certainly have a good time without drinking alcohol. Just make sure that everyone knows that it’s an alcohol free party ahead of time and that there will be plenty of other things for people to drink. Besides juices, teas, coffees and alcohol-free punches, mocktails can be a fun alternative.

F How would you rate your FB: ccooking skills? RM: Not as good as Donna R H but good enough. All Hay y need is a bit of spunk to you c cook. FB: What is your signature d dish? RM: My Peking Duck Soup with corn, asparagus and egg ribbons. Everyone loves it! FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? RM: I would have my mum’s Pho - Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup. FB: What is your favourite food? RM: European desserts. I can turn into a professional eater if you place a plate of European desserts in front of me. FB: What is your favourite drink? RM: I’m alcohol intolerant so give me an exotic mocktail any day and any time. In summer give me a Custard Apple Smoothie. In winter, take me to a café and we can laugh over perfectly made coffee. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner?

“Bette r to be de food fo r three prived of days, th tea fo an – Chin r one” ese pr overb

As promised, here is one of Van’s own special recipes: It serves 8.

RM: Actor Henry Cavill (Superman.) He doesn’t have to say anything, Her Excellency The Honourable Quentin Bryce - she can lay her wisdom on me. Her style is impeccable. Coco Chanel, Jimeoin for a good laugh and the crowd that made the Rising Sunshine youtube clip. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? RM: Buy fresh and be brave. Test out new ingredients. Hydrate your mints by soaking them in water for a few minutes. Soaking not only hydrates but kills all the bugs, and takes away dirt and sand. There is a science and art to cooking. Your dish can look like a masterpiece if you want it to. The science is the method you use. If it does not turn out the first time you try it, keep at it. People who are great at making a dish without a doubt have made it more than once. Have fun in your kitchen. Make it easy and make it fresh! Make a mess if that is what it takes.

STEP 3: Brown ginger, garlic and spring onions. Add corn, asparagus, mushrooms and sliced duck meat. STEP 4: Add 2 litres water and bring to a boil. Add duck bones. Cook for 15 minutes on high heat then simmer. STEP 5: Before serving beat eggs. Bring pot to medium boil. Pour in eggs and beat vigorously with a fork. STEP 6: In a small bowl add 4 tablespoons cold water and stir in 3 tablespoons of cornflour. Pour in cornflour mixture and stir quickly. Add soy sauce then season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for 5 minutes on low heat. STEP 7: Serve with coriander and finely sliced spring onions. TIPS: Do not add eggs and the cornflour until you are ready to eat. The soup can be stored in the fridge for up to a day before serving. You may need to add more cornflour depending on the brand. Use the duck bones to create depth in the stock flavour. These should not be served up in bowls. Hope you enjoy making this wonderful soup and thanks again to Van for sharing her personal recipe with us. KEILOR coach Mick Andreadis is not too fazed about his Blues’ poor start to the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Senior Division season. Following up from its season opening home loss to Bentleigh, Keilor hit the road to take on Hoppers Crossing but couldn’t make amends for a disappointing day one of play, losing the match outright on Saturday. Having already given up first innings points seven days earlier, the Blues failed to get through the Hoppers Crossing order when play resumed on Saturday, with the Cats declaring their innings at 8/213, 98 runs ahead of the Blues. Keilor then crumbled with

the bat as all but skipper Jody Hutchinson (53) fell cheaply. The Blues could only muster 119 in 41 overs, setting the host a measly 22 for victory, which was successfully chased down for no loss in five overs. Andreadis told Star on Sunday he wasn’t disappointed with his undermanned side, citing its lack of experience. “It’s not all doom and gloom,” Andreadis said. “We’ve had seven debutants in the first two games and all of them ranging from 14 to about 19-years-old, so we’ve got to do the tough yards. “We’ve had a lot of players unavailable and a lot of them have been our better players. “It’s not the end of the world.”

The winless Blues will this weekend hit the road once more to face an undefeated South Caulfield outfit. But with Andreadis not expecting to have his best squad available for another few weeks, the priority, for now at least, will be pumping some more Senior Division experience into his youngsters. “We’ll get some better players at our disposal soon and also some of the younger guys will get a few more games under their belt,” Andreadis said.“We play South Caulfield this week and they’re a good side, so it’s going to be a tough game. “I reckon in maybe two or three games we should start to be more competitive with a more settled side.”

Doggies storm to big win By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater continued its strong start to the Premier Cricket season, smashing Essendon by nine wickets. After winning the toss, the Bulldogs sent the Bombers in to bat with immediate success. The bowling combination of Jake Haberfield, Hamish Winter-Irving, Michael Kelly and Sunam Gautam ripped through the batting line up in a dominating performance which saw Essendon dismissed for 96 runs in the 37th over. In reply, Footscray made light work of the total, losing just the one wicket before notching up the win in the 27th over. Opening the batting, Dylan Kight made 52 not out while Travis Dean was also not out on 23. Footscray captain Dean Russ was rapt with his side’s performance, particularly spin bowler Kelly who finished with 2/12 from 10 overs.

“The deck was a little bit tacky and it gave a bit to the fast bowlers,” Russ said. “I thought Michael (Kelly) was outstanding. We thought we would get him in the game early and see how it goes and he responded fantastically. He hit really good areas and bowled with great control. “He picked up a couple of wickets later in his spell which he really deserved.” Saturday’s win sees Footscray secure a bonus point and move to a 4-1 win/loss record for the season. “It was great to be able to round off the one-day fixture with a bonus point and a comprehensive win so it has been a very pleasing start to the season,” Russ said. “We just wanted to play good cricket (through the oneday games) and we are doing that. The frustrating thing is that Richmond (round four) was very much the one that got away and

there is a realistic chance that we could have been 5-0. “That happens but to be 4-1 is outstanding and we are going into the two-day format with a lot of confidence.” Footscray now has three two-day fixtures in a row, starting with a clash with Prahran this week. Russ said he didn’t expect the make-up of the team to change too much in the longer format of the game. “It is quite a good team that we have at the moment and it is a solid team,” Russ said. “I think it is about doing what we have been doing for an extended period of time. The batsmen need to try and bat as many balls as possible and the bowlers need to focus on hitting the right areas. “We have good options with the ball and we bat quite deep so I can’t see it changing too drastically at all.”

Sport Three’s the charm LIAM TWOMEY THE Western Region Football League will move to a three division format in 2014. The competition’s board confirmed the change in structure last week with the league’s 24 senior teams seen as the right number to support a third-tier. League CEO Bob Tregear said that the new structure is a great step forward for the growing future of the league. “With the successful debut seasons of our two new clubs in Manor Lakes and Sanctuary Lakes this year, as well as the inclusion of Tarneit next season, the third division allows the league to expand and cater for new club development in the future,” he said. The WRFL will follow the same structure as the Essendon District Foot-

ball League which broke into a three-tier set-up in 2012. All 14 Division Two clubs will play each other once in the first 13 rounds of the season. At the conclusion of round 13, the top eight will remain in Division Two while the bottom six will form Division Three. League football operations manager David Newton said that the third division would also allow clubs and players to participate at a level which caters for their skill. “As part of the 2010/13 strategic plan, one of the six key issues raised was the evenness of competition,” he said. “By moving to three divisions it is anticipated that the imbalance that has been evident in recent years will be reduced significantly.

“When analysing the 2013 Division Two competition, the average losing margin of the bottom five teams against those in the top seven was around 20 goals. When the bottom five teams played each other it averaged only seven goals, so therefore it will benefit all clubs in that there will be closer games more often.” The league has also been confirmed that Werribee Districts will move straight into Division One after crossing over from the Victorian Amateur Football Association. The Tigers take the place of Glen Orden in the top division after the Hawks decided it was in their best interests to stay in Division Two. It is anticipated that the draft fixtures for Division One and Division Two will be completed by Friday 15 November.

Division Two premier Glen Orden will be part of a three-tier competition next season. 10523

Clubs back divisions LIAM TWOMEY THE Western Region Football League’s move into a three division competition has been well received by clubs. With the official announcement made last week, the majority of club presidents who would be affected by the split said they thought the move was the best way to curb lopsided results. As one of the newest teams in the expanding WRFL competition, Sanctuary Lakes president Danny Galea saw first-hand the difference between the top and bottom of Division Two. He said he was looking forward to a more even competition in the future. “I think it makes the competition a lot fairer,” Galea said. “If clubs go into Division Three and they are upset about losing so many games then you just have to be better for it. “You need to improve and it is up to you to work your way up to Division One. I think it is a good idea.” Albanvale president Jason Curmi also threw his support behind the three division split however, added that the Cobras would be fighting hard to remain in Division Two. After playing finals for 15 years in a row, Albanvale has found itself in the bottom six the last two seasons. Curmi said he was pleased the league’s decision would allow clubs to earn a spot in Division Two.

“I think the way they have introduced it is the best way to do it with the top eight staying after 13 rounds,” he said. “If you go down then you only have yourselves to blame. I would rather do that than just splitting it right now for the start of the season. “At least it gives you a chance to stay up.” After being on the receiving end of a number of lopsided results during its final year in Division One in 2012, Sunshine Heights was able to establish itself in the Division Two competition this season and made finals. Dragons president John Stewart was confident his side would avoid the bottom six but said the committee believed there were more important things than the division the club competes in. “To be honest, the on-field success in the seniors is a nice by-product of trying to get some of the club culture right,” he said. “If we were to find ourselves playing third division football but we had a strong junior program and we were heading in the right direction in other areas, I would not care at all which division we were playing in. “We pride ourselves on participation levels and our place in the community much more than how we are doing on the park.” The 14 teams in Division Two are, North Footscray, Glen Orden, Parkside, Manor Lakes, Wyndhamvale, Sunshine Heights, Caroline Springs, Albanvale, Braybrook, Sanctuary Lakes, West Footscray, Laverton, North Sunshine and Tarneit.

Based on last year’s ladder positions, Albanvale and Laverton will be forced to fight hard Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI to remain in Division Two. 100749.

Rolling her way to gold By LIAM TWOMEY

Sunshine & Western Region Sports Club Inc.

CODY Sylvester saves her best for the big stage. The Werribee resident competed at her first National Bowls Championships last month and wasted no time making herself at home on the greens. Sylvester and her Victorian teammates won the gold medal in the girls’ fours event. “That is the first time I have ever played in nationals,” she said. “I was nervous at the start but every end that we played I was getting better and better. Then I didn’t feel nervous at all after a while. I just wanted to keep

Don Deeble

Rising

star going,” Sylvester said. “I was very surprised how well we did as a team together to get the gold.” In the team’s first match, Victoria defeated pre-tournament favourites

Queensland before also notching up wins against Tasmania and New South Wales to seal the gold. “When we played Queensland, we thought it was going to be a really hard match because they were the favourites but we just smashed them,” Sylvester said. “After we won (the gold medal), we just kept hugging. We couldn’t believe it, we were so happy. We just wanted to shout it out to everyone. It was great.” However, the 16-year-old wasn’t finished yet and was able to back up her performance with a silver medal in

the girls’ pairs. There are no plans to slow down with Sylvester eyeing more success at the top level. “I started bowls because my dad plays and my grandparents used to play so I thought I would join in too,” Sylvester said. “I didn’t want to be left behind. I never thought I would get this far. “I’ve got the state pairs coming up so I am aiming to do well in that. “After that I will be aiming to get to the Commonwealth Games and just as high as I can go.” For her outstanding sporting

achievements Sylvester has been named this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with the Star News Group. Cody will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in her future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the Western Suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level.

Top-tier tennis star IT’S FAIR to say 2013 has been big for rising Sydenham tennis star, Lucas Vuradin. Vuradin, 14, recently came home from New South Wales a national champion in his age group and also collected a number of good results in other tournaments during his trip up north. Earlier this year the Maribyrnong College Sports Academy student also had the honour of representing Australia abroad, competing in a handful of tournaments in Europe against some of the world’s best juniors. Vuradin said he relished the opportunity to experience first-hand facing quality opponents on the other side of the globe. “It was such a new experience because I never played against the European kids before and they’re much more experienced than the kids down here,” Vuradin said. “Their game styles are much more different as well and I just got to know different game styles, different players and different types of courts as well.” The best of all his recent achievements, however, has been acquiring

the number one national ranking. “It was pretty hard to believe at the start, because out of all these years of training and working hard and stuff like that, I’ve finally got to number one in Australia,” Vuradin said.“I’m just happy to be where I am now and I’m just trying to keep that spot going for as long as possible.” However, Vuradin has been forced to halt his progress since finishing up his recently busy schedule. The gun right-hander is expecting to sit out tournaments for at least the next month after succumbing to bone stress in his left foreman. Vuradin said he likely picked up the injury after playing for three weeks straight in Sydney. “I was just over-playing it, really, and to recover from it I’m just taking two weeks off,” Vuradin explained. “I’m currently in my second week of not hitting any backhands at all, so at the start of (this) week I’ll start getting back into it. “But it probably won’t recover for about another three or four weeks.” Vuradin hopes to one day go pro and crack the top 100.

Time for cricket to shine bright CRICKET has certainly taken over from the footy now that the overly long trade period has finished. I am not a fan of the AFL taking up the headlines for the entire year. The English side has arrived and it will be very interesting to see how former Hoppers Crossing player Stuart Broad is welcomed by the Aussie fans. I have been told he is a great bloke by those that played with him at Hogans Rd but I am sure he is in for an MCG reception for the Boxing Day Test to rival that of John Snow in his heyday. The Werribee Cricket Club and Football Club Ashes Dinner has been moved to Wednesday 27 November at the Werribee Sports Club and will feature the very colourful Rodney Hogg. Tickets for the dinner are available through Janelle on 9741 9862 for $50 per person for a 2 course dinner with drinks at bar prices.

IT is the season of cricket functions and I was the MC for a roast for local legend Michael “Tocka” O’Keefe last weekend at the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Footscray greats Barry Watson and Tony Dodemaide were there for what was a great night to celebrate Tocka’s career and retirement from the game. Or at least we thought that was the case. Truth is, he played the next day in the fourths, so he could fulfil his dream of playing with his son, and who could blame him for that. There are few more genuine people in local sport than “Tocka” and I was very pleased to be a small part of the night. The video done by his teammates was priceless as was the message from his mate from Warrnambool Dave Hughes. LES Twentyman loves to bring up a cricket day from the 1980s, when he teamed up with Andrew Gibson, and I partnered Brad Hardie, in a double wicket competition at Sunshine High School to raise some money for charity. The end result was Brad and I were thrashed, I rolled my ankle and missed a game the following weekend for Hoppers Crossing. The good news was, we raised some money for the 20th man Fund, and I knocked the helmet of Les’ head with the first ball I bowled. Les has an Ashes Breakfast coming up on Wednesday 20 November from 7am in the Champions Room at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre at Albert Park. For more details contact Bronwyn on 9689 4800 or Bronwyn@20thmanfund. com.au. The panel includes Merv, Deano, Hoggy, Dodders and Tony Jones as MC. THE Hoppers Crossing Junior Netball Association is looking for teams for a twilight competition to be run on Thursday nights starting on 14 November and finishing in February 2014. They are looking for ladies, mens, mixed and all abilities teams to be part of the competition. For more details contact Darren Hellmann on 0413 607 645 or mhellmann@bigpond.com or the Registrar Lisa Caithness on 0413 012 376. I AM looking forward to the final few meetings of the Spring Racing Carnival on SEN. The feedback on the email, twitter and facebook has been fantastic. I just have to say I am not an expert so please don’t ask me for tips, I am a very green punter. Roadstar Kia’s power to perform KIA Australia has released the allnew turbocharged Kia Cerato Koup in Australia this month, marking the first performance orientated model in the company’s local line-up. A 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, powers the Kia Cerato Koup SX developing 150kW of power at 6000rpm, and 264Nm of torque from 1750-4500rpm, the turbo is the most powerful Koup ever. The Kia Cerato Koup will share the performance limelight with the hotly anticipated Kia Pro_cee’d GT, which will arrive early next year, also powered by the same engine. As well as the turbocharged Kia Koup, a regular 2.0-litre naturally aspirated model will also be in the line-up. Set to replace the outgoing sub$25,000 model, the new 2.0-litre direct injected four-cylinder engine produces 129kW at 6500rpm and 209Nm at 4700rpm, an increase over the outgoing car’s 115kW and 194Nm. Both engines will be available with either a six-speed manual or auto, with Turbo scoring paddle shifters. From the outside the two-door Koup’s design is a change from the previous model’s sedan like shape, with a more sporty focused theme. The previous car’s appeal to the design conscious, but not necessarily performance-focused buyer will change with the arrival of the turbo. All models will have Kia’s FlexSteer steering system that alters weighting between three modes Comfort, Normal, and Sport. All Koup models also run a strutfront, torsion-beam rear suspension set-up. Kia is expected to launch one

Standard features are likely to include 18-inch alloy, dual chrometipped exhausts, LED tail lights, larger bumper and grille openings, a black gloss grille insert, larger front brakes, alloy sports pedals, and front and rear seats with carbon fibre-look inserts.

Pathfinder finds its own way THE all-new Nissan Pathfinder family SUV sets a new benchmark in driving and is now available in Australia. This next generation SUV is designed for families. Every detail has been meticulously considered, from the modern styling to new levels of comfort achieved thanks to interior luxuries, both big and small. With seven seats as standard and an ingenious EZ Flex seating system which makes the third row easily accessible and comfortable for all, the family will board and exit like never before. Once inside, the Tri-Zone climate control, which comes standard across the range, and the Tri-Zone entertainment, available on selected models, will have all occupants wishing journeys were just that little bit longer. The roomy interior of the all-new Nissan Pathfinder has a whopping 2259 litres of cargo space when the second and third row seats are folded flat. The second row splits 60/40, and the third 50/50 to give numerous options for carrying both passengers and awkward loads. Then there’s the ingenious under-floor storage area, with even more room to stow stuff or keep valuables out of sight. The all-new Nissan Pathfinder range offers the option of two wheel drive or intuitive four wheel drive variants, as well as smooth responsive acceleration thanks to the next generation CVT, towing capability and the innovative around view monitor that makes parking safer and easier than ever.

There is a host of safety features as standard across the range including: five star ANCAP safety rating, six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, reverse parking camera with predictive path technology, reversing sensors, vehicle dynamic control, traction control system, anti-

lock braking system, brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution. To test drive this vehicle, visit Werribee Nissan at 14-26 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, open from Monday to Saturday,
