■ New group lays foundation for education funding in West
School funds plan By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM schools, businesses and the council have united and chosen to think outside the box in a bid to reduce one of the biggest hurdles facing educators - lack of money. In a Victorian-first the Wyndham Region Schools Foundation was established earlier this month with the goal of pumping much-needed funds into as many schools as possible in the area. The foundation is made up of principals and assistant principals, business people, councillors and even former Wyndham Council administrators. Bernard Knight, the former Wyndham chairman of commissioners, was elected as the president, while Wyndham mayor Heather Marcus was elected vice-president. Cr Marcus told Star the initiative would mean a brighter future for Wyndham’s schools. “As the fastest growing City in Australia I think this is absolutely fantastic,” Cr Marcus said.
“Twenty-five per cent of our population is under the age of 25 and up to 70 babies are being born every week in Wyndham, so we know how much this is needed.” Assistant principal of Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, Keith Halge, said that by increasing funding to all Wyndham schools, each student would be given a better chance at receiving the best education possible. “Students are individuals and they need individual approaches to their educations, and that is very difficult to manage with the current level of funds allocated,” Mr Halge said. “Working as one team and one group is terrific... this will be our student’s gain.” Secretary of the foundation, John De Witt, said there was no limit as to how any funds raised were distributed among the schools, and donors could even decide where their money went. “This is a perfect avenue for developers, builders and business people to give back to the community,” Mr De Witt said. “The community needs to partner up and support this initiative. “This is a great way to help Wyndham pop up as a leader in education and help build our community.” Yellow Brick Road Werribee has donated the first funds to kick start the foundation, which will be distributed in December. Callea Pearce Lawyers has provided free legal advice to help set up the group. For more information contact John De Witt on 0410 397 775.

Deadlines for Issue dated 5th November 2013 Display – General News Publication – Brimbank Booking Deadline – Wednesday, 30th October at noon Copy Deadline – Wednesday, 30th October at 5pm Final Proofs – Friday, 1st November at noon
AROUND this time next week we will have a new mayor of the City of Wyndham with Heather Marcus’ term coming to an end. It has never been more important for this mayor to bring stability to the council chambers and to ensure all councillors are on the same page, something that has not been apparent in the last few months. This is not the time for ‘Cowboys’ to be running this city. We need the council to be strong, assertive, accountable, and responsible or be gone. We also need the bureaucrats to stop protecting their jobs and DO their jobs. The harsh reality is there will be a clean out if things don’t get better. Your thoughts are welcome. FILLING up my car with petrol is usually a pretty mundane experience but last week I was wondering if I was going to be caught in the middle of something untoward. I was the only one at the bowser at the local convenience store when a nondescript late model car pulled into the front of the shop area. The car doors opened and a male and female got out both were wearing blue shirts and dark slacks and packing, what looked to me to be enormous guns on their belts. Yes guns. For a few minutes as they went into the store and spoke to the attendant I did not know whether to run or hide. Obviously they were police of some description but for a few moments there I thought the worst. When I went in to pay the attendant he was a bit bemused by it all as well. A FEW events of note include the St Andrew’s Parish Fair on Saturday 16 November at the Primary School in Greaves St North from 10am till 8pm. There will be food, drinks and entertainment from the four Parish schools plus raffles, rides and plenty of other activities. Jillian’s Pink Pedal Challenge is being run by Jillian Lawrow for the Breast Cancer Network Australia at Sanctuary Lakes Hotel in Point Cook on Saturday 9 November from 7.30pm. There will be music, dancing, raffles and an auction, for details and bookings contact jillian@lawrow.com.au or 0411 535 253. Wyndham’s new councillor By XAVIER SMERDON A CRIMINOLOGIST and social worker at the Werribee Mercy Hospital emergency department has become Wyndham’s newest councillor. Just after 3.30pm last Thursday Michelle Wharrie was announced as the winner of a countback to fill former councillor Shane Bourke’s vacancy after he resigned earlier
this month. Ms Wharrie told Star she felt “very humbled” to be taking up a spot on the council. “I was definitely surprised to win the countback and really glad to be able to take the opportunity to represent Wyndham,” Ms Wharrie said. “I’m very excited about it.” Ms Wharrie, whose birthday fell on the election countback,
Michelle Wharrie said the news was a fitting present. She said she hoped to be an inclusive councillor who would
be a voice for the residents. “I plan on doing my best and I will always treat the community with respect,” she said. “I’m ready to listen to the residents. “The current council has only been going for 12 months so I am expecting by the end of the first term that we will see some positive changes in the community.”
Ms Wharrie said she had previously lived in Tarneit for 12 years but was currently living in Werribee. “That’s why I was interested in representing the Chaffey Ward, because I’ve seen the area grow so much in recent years,” she said. Ms Wharrie listed infrastructure and social issues such as family violence, mental health and drug and alcohol abuse as
some of the biggest hurdles facing Wyndham. A Wyndham Council spokesperson said Ms Wharrie could technically begin her duties as a councillor as soon as she had taken the Oath of Office at a council meeting in front of the CEO. Ms Wharrie was expected to attend last night’s council meeting.
Scam warning By XAVIER SMERDON POLICE are warning Wyndham residents to be vigilant to avoid becoming the victims of a new scam. Leading Senior Constable Dawn Youla said a resident from Point Cook had reported receiving a call from a company called CPR. Several people claiming to be from the company called the resident and stated that he owed over $3000 in outstanding court fines from a matter in New South Wales. “The gentleman was placed under considerable pressure to deposit the outstanding amount into a Commonwealth Bank account,” Leading Sen Const Youla said. “The gentleman, while very rattled, had the good sense not to comply with this demand. He was then threatened with arrest for non-compliance. “This group of scammers were extremely well organised and at some point one of the scammers purported to be from the NSW Police. They offered court file numbers and seemed to have answers to all the reporting person’s questions.” Leading Sen Const Youla said the incident was a timely reminder to residents to report any call they think may be a scam.

Our Stone Surfaces are engineered to last a lifetime.
New opening for world of animals By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM’S biggest tourist attraction has had a world-class makeover that it is hoped will bring in thousands of extra visitors every year. The Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Ryan Smith, officially opened the new visitor arrivals precinct at the zoo last week. Students from Werribee Primary School were among the first to see
the new multi-million dollar precinct and helped Mr Smith unveil some new sculptures. Along with a new gift shop and ticket booths made from a safari bus, the new precinct will also be home to a new tourism centre that will be run by Wyndham Council. Mr Smith said the redevelopment would make the zoo easier, quicker and more modern for over 400,000 visitors each year.
“This new arrivals precinct is critical to the future success of the zoo as it continues to draw tourists and families, and is essential to wildlife conservation,” Mr Smith said. “Now in its 30th year, Werribee Open Range Zoo is growing rapidly and last year welcomed a recordbreaking 420,000 visitors. “The new entry will improve accessibility and will make sure that
Our surfaces are heat, scratch, stain and impact resistant, come with a 10 year warranty and are available in over 30 stylish colours.
the zoo is maintained as it prepares for the next 30 years.” An additional 250 car parks were also part of the redevelopment. Nine sculptures of classic African animals were also revealed, and they seemed especially popular with the Werribee Primary School students. The design for the sculptures was chosen by the children of different zoo staff members.

Race for mayor By XAVIER SMERDON THREE Wyndham Councillors have declared they will be throwing their hats into the ring when the City’s next mayor is determined next week. Councillors Bob Fairclough, Glenn Goodfellow and threetime Mayor John Gibbons, have each confirmed they want the top job. Cr Goodfellow said he felt he would be able to offer the “generational change” that Wyndham needed in a mayor. “When you look at Wyndham’s demographics, nearly
over 80 per cent of the people are young families with a mortgage,” Cr Goodfellow said. “I believe the previous mayors have laid the foundation stones, and I think the next mayor should be someone who is more reflective of our younger, growing community.” Cr Fairclough said while he would continue to advocate for better infrastructure and reduced traffic, he would also focus on more community engagement. “I would be encouraging much more teamwork between
the residents, councillors and the council staff,” Cr Fairclough said. Cr Gibbons said he felt that he would bring experience to the role, as he is currently finishing his 17th year on the council. “I think I’ve got a bit of experience behind me,” Cr Gibbons said. “We’ve got to put someone in there that can do the job. The mayor will be decided on Wednesday 6 November at a statutory meeting at the Wyndham Civic Centre.

Creating a new green thumb By XAVIER SMERDON PAYMAN Kooshi came to Australia from Iran nine months ago in the hope of creating a new life for his wife and two young daughters. But Visa restrictions have made it impossible for him to work and provide for his family. While he waits for his situation to change, he has found a new sense of belonging and self-worth by volunteering at a local community garden. Mr Kooshi regularly visits the Werribee Environmental Community Garden (WECP) in Wyndham Vale where he maintains his own plot of blooming
vegetables. He has chosen to grow beans and cabbages for the time being because they are what he is used to eating in Iran. Mr Kooshi said he enjoyed learning about vegetables he had never seen before and also taking home some new skills. “I like it here because now I have new friends and I like to work in the garden very much,” Mr Kooshi said. “When I come here I enjoy it very much because at home I get very bored when I cannot work.” President of the WECP, Bob Fairclough, said Mr Kooshi had been embraced by his fellow gardeners and had developed a
green thumb. He said members of the community were being shown different techniques, such as using companion plants like flowers to keep certain insects away from the vegetables. “One of the ideas of the garden is to show people how to do different things and to also provide them with the opportunity to grow fresh and healthy vegetables for themselves,” Mr Fairclough said. The WECP is located on Walls Rd in Wyndham Vale, at the rear of ISON house. For more information call Bob Fairclough on 0409 252 872.

THE process of growing a backyard vegetable patch has been made easier for Wyndham residents with free vegetable gardening workshops available across the municipality. Residents are being encouraged to join the workshops which will be held in Werribee, Truganina and Wyndham Vale. Chaffey Ward Councillor John Gibbons said one of the benefits of having a vegetable patch was that it would be easier for residents to eat the recommended five serves of vegetables a day. “Workshops cover a wide range of interesting topics including growing your own salad, spicing up meals with fresh herbs, growing super foods and more,” Cr Gibbons said. “They’re a great way for retirees, people looking for work and people caring for loved ones at home to gain new skills that will save them money and improve their health,” he said. Workshops are for Wyndham residents aged 18 and over who are not in the workforce. For more information about the free workshops contact Shoestring Gardening at shoestring.contact@gmail.com or text 0438 355 953.

SALE EXTENDED MUST END 31st OCTOBER
Ready to volunteer By YASEMIN TALAT AS Breast Cancer Awareness month comes to an end for another year the message of hope will continue to echo in the hearts of many. Werribee resident Katalin Belos is one of the hundreds of people who have spread the message of love and hope this October. The 75-year-old has volunteered her time to raise money and awareness for breast cancer and other cancers for the past three years. Full of passion and enthusiasm Ms Belos volunteered her time as a pink lady selling merchandise and collecting donations at Werribee Plaza for Pink
Ribbon Day last week. “I love to sell the products and I love to meet people and talk to people,” Ms Belos said. As a volunteer Ms Belos was touched by stories of the many people she met and she too touched many hearts. Ms Belos said she liked to share a special poem with those who had been affected by cancer. Last time she volunteered she shared the poem with a lady whose mother was fighting cancer. The lady came back to Ms Belos to tell her the poem made her mother feel good and had touched the whole family. “I found the poem in the newspaper a long time ago and
if somebody comes and they are suffering from cancer or they have a relative suffering from cancer I’ll give it to them,” Ms Belos said. Ms Belos also understands the pain of cancer. She was misdiagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and underwent surgery. She said it was a very painful experience but she does not let it diminish her spirit. Ms Belos said when she was volunteering she felt like she was on top of the world. “I love it, I can hardly wait for it,” Ms Belos said. Public protected By CHARLENE MACAULAY AN INDEPENDENT study has revealed that night-time train commuters feel much safer when Protective Services Officers (PSOs) are manning their train station. Market research consultants DBM carried out the study across a selection of stations patrolled by PSOs - including Yarraville, South Yarra, Noble Park, Epping, Frankston and Box Hill - to determine how effective the officers were in maintaining perceptions of public safety. The study found: - Night-time train users gave PSOs almost universal approv-
al, with 94 per cent agreeing that PSOs are a good idea and 93 per cent keen to seek their help if they felt unsafe; - 94 per cent of night-time train users reported having seen PSOs on patrol, and those commuters who knew that PSOs patrolled their station felt safer; and - Two-thirds of parents said they would be happier about their children travelling by train at night, now that PSOs are patrolling. PSOs guard the stations in pairs between 6pm and the last train and are equipped with the same weapons as police. There are currently 488
PSOs working at 79 train stations across the network. Across the West, PSOs are stationed at Footscray, West Footscray, Yarraville, Tottenham, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Williams Landing, Sunshine, St Albans, Watergardens, Melton, Altona, Williamstown, Laverton and Newport. Ginifer train station became the latest to staff PSOs, with officers starting their shift last Tuesday. PSOs have issued more than 12,000 infringement notices for a wide range of offences, including being drunk in a public place, possessing alcohol, graffiti and weapons.

Craig Rowley is the new CEO of LeadWest. 108526
Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT
New chief acts on violence By XAVIER SMERDON THE new CEO of the West’s largest advocacy group has promised to focus more on social issues like violence against women. Craig Rowley was confirmed as the CEO of LeadWest earlier this month after Anton Mayer retired from the top job. Mr Rowley comes from a background of both public and private enterprises and has lived in the West for over 10 years with his wife and two children. He was also involved in corporate and community development with Stonnington Council. It was this experience that Mr Rowley said made him
want to join an organisation like LeadWest. “With my job I would drive through Toorak and see the big mansions before driving home to the West,” he said. “It made me think how different our communities were and how I’d like to give something back to the West.” Mr Rowley said during his tenure as CEO of LeadWest there would be better engagement between all members of the group so that they “can see the fruits of their efforts translate into results”. He also said there would be a renewed focus on social issues that would in turn improve the West’s financial outlook.
“When you look at issues like preventing violence against women, the investment isn’t very high, yet a reasonable amount of money can make a huge difference to people’s lives,” he said. “If we can make a difference in some of these areas then we can increase people’s opportunities to participate.” Mr Rowley also said that while Maribyrnong Council had signalled that they were planning on leaving LeadWest, they would still be members for another two years. He said he could see potential that the council would change its mind in that time and remain members of LeadWest.

Stomp out child abuse By YASEMIN TALAT THE community is being urged to rally together and stomp out child abuse once and for all. Child Wise, an Australian protection charity to prevent child abuse, will host The Stomp Fun Run this November to raise awareness and money to put a ‘stomp’ against child abuse. A Hoppers Crossing family will put their best foot forward at the event to help the cause. Geanette Iskander is the Business co-ordinator and Advocate for Child Wise and is passionate about helping put a stomp against child abuse. This year she will set up her business, Hani’s Mirror Creations, at the fun run and donate all her profits to the charity. “I’ve been very fortunate that we’ve never been touched by abuse but unfortunately there are a lot of children out there who have been affected,” Ms Iskander said. “I think it’s a great cause that a lot of people don’t like to talk about unfortunately,” she said. “It is in the community and it is something that people need to be discussing and people should be aware. “Let’s just stomp it out of the community.” Ms Iskander said it was important for children to know that they can speak out. She said the community should be shouting out against child abuse and not keeping quiet. “I’m fortunate that I can have a voice for these children,” Ms Iskander said.
SALE EXTENDED MUST END 31st OCTOBER Geanette Iskander and her daughter Britney. 108336 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI Ms Iskander’s 14-year-old daughter Britney has also registered to take part in the fun run. The event will be held on Sunday 10 November at Albert Park with the aim of raising $100,000. The day is set to be jampacked with entertainment,
food and craft stalls and circus performers as well as the 5/10km walk or run around the lake. For more information or to donate visit www.childwise.net For help and support for child abuse call the national help line on 1800 991 099.

Police appeal for witnesses
Creating a buzz By YASEMIN TALAT ARTS, crafts and a whole bunch of activities have been keeping residents at Manor Lakes Aged Care busy over the last year. Special visits from the Bunnings Warehouse Werribee team have created a real buzz at the aged care centre. Bunnings Warehouse Werribee teamed up with Manor Lakes Aged Care to run a craft program for the residents this year. Lifestyle co-ordinator at the aged care centre, Angie
Taylor said the program helped improve the quality of life of residents and reduced boredom. “Our residents just love it, it’s great,” Ms Taylor said. “It’s a great program.” Bunnings Werribee Operations Manager, Robyn O’Brien said the residents enjoyed the different craft activities which included painting, decorating photo boxes and scrapbooking. “It’s really great to be able to be involved in the local community and our team members live and
work here too and we try to support our local community where we can,” Ms O’Brien said. “The residents enjoy learning new skills and doing activities that are not part of their everyday schedule,” she said. “We have built good relationships with the residents and they enjoy sharing their craft tips with us.” The Bunnings team will be back to visit the residents next month to run a Christmas Wreath activity.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a collision that left a man with life threatening injuries at Hoppers Crossing last week. A Victoria Police spokesperson said it was believed a Mitsubishi Lancer sedan was attempting to turn right from Forsyth Rd onto Old Geelong Rd when it collided with a prime-mover truck just after 10am last Thursday. The driver of the sedan, a Broadmeadows man aged in his 20s, was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital. The driver of the truck, a Hoppers Crossing man aged in his 40s, was not injured and was assisting police with their inquiries. Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au

Community FM trivia night By YASEMIN TALAT COMMUNITY radio station WynFM has been on the airwaves for almost two decades and they want to be on air for many decades to come. The volunteer based project, which was established in 1995, has seen WynFm obtain a permanent broadcasting licence since 2001. President Amber Templeton said WynFm played an important role in the community. “The purpose of community radio is to provide an alternative voice that is not out there in mainstream media,” Ms Templeton said.
“And for Wyndham having that alternative voice is very important,” she said. To help support the continued growth of the radio station, WynFM are having a trivia night fund-raiser in November. Ms Templeton said the fundraiser was a significant source of income for the station. “WynFm is a community radio station, our main sources of income are basically grants, sponsorship and membership and that’s it,” she said. “We are there for the Wyndham community but without support we won’t be here.” Ms Templeton said the night
would be full of fun and entertainment. The line-up includes local identity Kevin Hillier as MC, Trivia Master John Fastuca and a performance by local comedian Matt Portelli. The station will also launch their new website and the official rebranding and new logo. “It’s just going to be an action packed night filled from the moment you walk in to the end,” Ms Templeton said. Tickets are $10 each and tables are for 10 people. To secure a seat email wynfm@wynfm.org.au by 1 November.

Pledge to remember By YASEMIN TALAT STUDENTS from Werribee Primary school are set to read the Pledge of Remembrance this Remembrance Day as part of the Read2Remember campaign. Grade One and Two teacher at Werribee Primary School Jennifer Ilmer said it was important for the students to understand the significance of Remembrance Day. “We are hoping to reinforce the significance of Remembrance Day and its importance to Australian culture,” Ms Ilmer said. “It’s really important for students so they understand some
of the history of Australia,” she said. The students will be joining up to half a million other Australian school children registered for the reading event. Students will also read the purpose written book The Quest for Courage, which highlights resilience and courage. Ms Ilmer said the book’s message of resilience and courage would help teach students how to stand up for themselves in a good way and how to cooperate and look after each other. She said the book also tied in well with the school’s social skills program. “I think the students will be really interested in the story and
they will be able to relate a lot of it to their own life,” Ms Ilmer said. Leading up to Remembrance Day the students will also learn more about the significance of the day and the history in dedicated lessons. Last year the event received a ‘Wild World Reading Record’ with more than 350,000 students participating in a reading event at the same time. The campaign aims to improve literacy skills and wellbeing among children. The Pledge of Remembrance will be read by students on Remembrance Day, 11 November 2013.

Mapping out a sport for all ages By YASEMIN TALAT
Anne, left, with Phil, Stephanie and Louise map out the next street and park orienteering series to come to the Western Suburbs. 107775 Picture: YASEMIN TALAT
KEEPING fit and healthy this summer does not have to be monotonous or expensive. The Western Suburbs will be home to orienteering activities over the next few months and everyone, no matter what age or fitness level, is invited to give it a go. Long-time local participant Anne Robinson said orienteering was a simple way to keep fit at a small price. “It’s good because you can do it at any age or any fitness it doesn’t exclude anybody at all and it’s cheap,” Ms Robinson said. “I like exercising outdoors and I like
being able to compete and exercise with people my own age and ability and to be able to improve as well,” Ms Robinson said. Ms Robinson, who originally started orienteering in the walker category, now runs in one of four different courses available. Each week the street and park orienteering will be held in a different suburb across the west including Footscray, Altona, Altona Meadows, Newport, Yarraville, Williamstown and Sunshine West. “I think it’s good because you don’t get stale, you’ve got a different location each week, something a bit new and there’s always a bit of a challenge,” Ms
Robinson said. “You don’t need any special skills and you definitely don’t need a compass,” she said. “The maps are very simple, it’s not hard to navigate around. We haven’t lost anyone yet.” Participants will use maps to find points in the landscape collecting scores along the way and can join individually or as part of a family group. The courses range from 3km to 11km, and participants can choose to walk or run. The Western Sunset series will kick-start every Tuesday from 22 October at 7pm. For more information visit www.vicorienteering.asn.au or call Anne on 9398 0765.

Anna shoots for Commonwealth glory By XAVIER SMERDON A POINT Cook mother has her sights set on one goal, to represent her country in her unusual sport. Anna Shedrina moved to Sanctuary Lakes just over two years ago before her son was born and was recently selected for the Commonwealth Games Shadow Team for trap shooting. Along with six other women from around Australia she is vying for two places in the Commonwealth Games team. Earlier this month Ms Shedrina competed at the Australian Masters Games and walked away with a gold medal in every event she entered. Trap Shooter Anna Shedrina is aiming for the top. 108532 Currently ranked fourth in AustraPicture: JOE MASTROIANNI lia for trap shooting, at just 31-years-
old and after just eight years in the sport she is a good chance to achieve her dream of representing her country. But Ms Shedrina said sport did not come naturally to her and she felt lucky to have discovered shooting. “As a kid, I was pretty average at every sport I tried. I had never won a trophy or a medal, which made me want that more than anything else. “Those blue ribbons you get when you win at school sport were very elusive. While others walked around with 10 of them plastered onto their chest, I’d never won one. I found one on the ground once and kept it. “It turns out that I just hadn’t tried the sport that I was good at yet.” Since discovering shooting Ms Shedrina, who also works three jobs,

has become addicted to the sport and it now occupies all her spare time. She even set up an ammunition manufacturing business with her partner, Bronze Wing Ammunition, where she works as a finance manager. She said the thrill of beating her competitors is what she loved the most about the sport. “The feeling that you get when you have a win. The satisfaction you feel to have all your hard work pay off - it never gets old,” she said. “It’s been eight years since (I discovered shooting) and I’ve barely had a weekend away from it. Now, it’s my life - my recreation, my sport and most of my work is related to shooting.”

Christmas party ideas to make a party a success. Get out of the night time groove. While people tend to think of parties as evening affairs, they don’t have to be. Even if a company Christmas party idea is to host a meal for guests at a restaurant or hotel, people will drink less at a luncheon rather than a dinner. So just switching the time of day can help make alcohol less of an issue. Break the mould. Whatever a company normally does, change it from year to year. Host a disc golf, skating or bowling party. Remember when choosing a Christmas party idea based on an activity to pick something
·
·
that everyone can do.
· Mix up the guest list. Instead of hosting a Christmas party that’s just for staff, widen the guest list to include extended family, friends, neighbours and business associates. Dealcoholise the Christmas party. There is no rule that alcohol has to be served at a company Christmas party. People can certainly have a good time without drinking alcohol. Just make sure that everyone knows that it’s an alcohol free party ahead of time and that there will be plenty of other things for people to drink. Besides juices, teas, coffees and alcohol-free punches, mocktails can be a fun alternative.

THE one rule of hosting a company Christmas party is not to hold it in the office. It’s a good rule to follow. But there are two problems to solve to make the company Christmas party a success. How to get colleagues to show up and how to solve the alcohol dilemma? Tired and stressed employees may be hard to entice into spending even more time with one another, especially if the annual Christmas party has become a tired tradition. Both happiness and safety can be compromised when people are drinking and as a social host, legally organisers have a duty to supervise their guests and make sure they all get home safely if they’re consuming alcohol at a party. Try some of these company

Men at Work It’s a role that has defined generations of men - the provider, the breadwinner, the worker. When you ask men why they work, a lot of them will say they’re ‘only in it for the money’. When you work for money, you can be financially independent, provide a future for your family and have some control over your life. Sometimes money truly is the only reason a person works. But today it is becoming increasingly important to have a more substantial reason for working. Some want to spend their days doing something their good at, being productive or if they have skills which other people need, they feel obliged to supply them. The idea of not going to work and spending time at the beach, watching television, going to the movies or shopping, hanging out with friends and playing sport might appeal, but at least some money is necessary to do these things. Relaxing and kicking back is great for a holiday, but the novelty will wear off and leave you feeling aimless and bored. The benefits of paid and unpaid work are strongly linked to values we hold. When you know what your values are regarding work, you can work out what you hope to achieve through working, what your overall ambitions are, set meaningful goals, choose jobs that will satisfy you in ways that are deeper than your hip pocket and understand why you feel dissatisfied in a job that doesn’t fit with your values. F How would you rate your FB: ccooking skills? RM: Not as good as Donna R H but good enough. All Hay y need is a bit of spunk to you c cook. FB: What is your signature d dish? RM: My Peking Duck Soup with corn, asparagus and egg ribbons. Everyone loves it! FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? RM: I would have my mum’s Pho - Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup. FB: What is your favourite food? RM: European desserts. I can turn into a professional eater if you place a plate of European desserts in front of me. FB: What is your favourite drink? RM: I’m alcohol intolerant so give me an exotic mocktail any day and any time. In summer give me a Custard Apple Smoothie. In winter, take me to a café and we can laugh over perfectly made coffee. RM: Actor Henry Cavill (Superman.) He doesn’t have to say anything, Her Excellency The Honourable Quentin Bryce - she can lay her wisdom on me. Her style is impeccable. Coco Chanel, Jimeoin for a good laugh and the crowd that made the Rising Sunshine youtube clip. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? RM: Buy fresh and be brave. Test out new ingredients. Hydrate your mints by soaking them in water for a few minutes. Soaking not only hydrates but kills all the bugs, and takes away dirt and sand. There is a science and art to cooking. Your dish can look like a masterpiece if you want it to. The science is the method you use. If it does not turn out the first time you try it, keep at it. People who are great at making a dish without a doubt have made it more than once. Have fun in your kitchen. Make it easy and make it fresh! Make a mess if that is what it takes.

Van Ritchie’s Asian Peking Duck Soup With Asparagus, Corn And Egg Ribbons: As promised, here is one of Van’s own special recipes: It serves 8. STEP 1: With a sharp knife, remove fleshy duck meat off duck bones. Place bones aside. Slice up duck meat and set aside. STEP 2: In a large stock pot and on medium heat, add two tablespoons of vegetable oil. STEP 3: Brown ginger, garlic and spring onions. Add corn, asparagus, mushrooms and sliced duck meat.
INGREDIENTS: Half a Roasted Peking Duck 1 Fresh Corn, sliced off the cob 1 cup Fresh Asparagus 200g Packet Assorted Asian Mushrooms 1.5cm Ginger, finely pounded 1 Garlic clove, finely pounded 4 Spring Onions, White Part Minced finely 4 Spring Onions, Finely sliced on angle to serve 2 Ltrs of Water 2 tbsp Vegetable Oil 2 tbsp Soy Sauce Salt and Pepper to taste 4 Eggs 3 tbsp Cornflour 4 tbsp Cold Water Coriander to serve
STEP 4: Add 2 litres water and bring to a boil. Add duck bones. Cook for 15 minutes on high heat then simmer. STEP 5: Before serving beat eggs. Bring pot to medium boil. Pour in eggs and beat vigorously with a fork. STEP 6: In a small bowl add 4 tablespoons cold water and stir in 3 tablespoons of cornflour. Pour in cornflour mixture and stir quickly. Add soy sauce then season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for 5 minutes on low heat. STEP 7: Serve with coriander and finely sliced spring onions. TIPS: Do not add eggs and the cornflour until you are ready to eat. The soup can be stored in the fridge for up to a day before serving. You may need to add more cornflour depending on the brand. Use the duck bones to create depth in the stock flavour. These should not be served up in bowls. Hope you enjoy making this wonderful soup and thanks again to Van for sharing her personal recipe with us. Sport Three’s the charm LIAM TWOMEY THE Western Region Football League will move to a three division format in 2014. The competition’s board confirmed the change in structure last week with the league’s 24 senior teams seen as the right number to support a third-tier. League CEO Bob Tregear said that the new structure is a great step forward for the growing future of the league. “With the successful debut seasons of our two new clubs in Manor Lakes and Sanctuary Lakes this year, as well as the inclusion of Tarneit next season, the third division allows the league to expand and cater for new club development in the future,” he said. The WRFL will follow the same structure as the Essendon District Foot-
ball League which broke into a three-tier set-up in 2012. All 14 Division Two clubs will play each other once in the first 13 rounds of the season. At the conclusion of round 13, the top eight will remain in Division Two while the bottom six will form Division Three. League football operations manager David Newton said that the third division would also allow clubs and players to participate at a level which caters for their skill. “As part of the 2010/13 strategic plan, one of the six key issues raised was the evenness of competition,” he said. “By moving to three divisions it is anticipated that the imbalance that has been evident in recent years will be reduced significantly.
“When analysing the 2013 Division Two competition, the average losing margin of the bottom five teams against those in the top seven was around 20 goals. When the bottom five teams played each other it averaged only seven goals, so therefore it will benefit all clubs in that there will be closer games more often.” The league has also been confirmed that Werribee Districts will move straight into Division One after crossing over from the Victorian Amateur Football Association. The Tigers take the place of Glen Orden in the top division after the Hawks decided it was in their best interests to stay in Division Two. It is anticipated that the draft fixtures for Division One and Division Two will be completed by Friday 15 November.
Division Two premier Glen Orden will be part of a three-tier competition next season. 10523

Clubs back divisions LIAM TWOMEY THE Western Region Football League’s move into a three division competition has been well received by clubs. With the official announcement made last week, the majority of club presidents who would be affected by the split said they thought the move was the best way to curb lopsided results. As one of the newest teams in the expanding WRFL competition, Sanctuary Lakes president Danny Galea saw first-hand the difference between the top and bottom of Division Two. He said he was looking forward to a more even competition in the future. “I think it makes the competition a lot fairer,” Galea said. “If clubs go into Division Three and they are upset about losing so many games then you just have to be better for it. “You need to improve and it is up to you to work your way up to Division One. I think it is a good idea.” Albanvale president Jason Curmi also threw his support behind the three division split however, added that the Cobras would be fighting hard to remain in Division Two. After playing finals for 15 years in a row, Albanvale has found itself in the bottom six the last two seasons. Curmi said he was pleased the league’s decision would allow clubs to earn a spot in Division Two.
“I think the way they have introduced it is the best way to do it with the top eight staying after 13 rounds,” he said. “If you go down then you only have yourselves to blame. I would rather do that than just splitting it right now for the start of the season. “At least it gives you a chance to stay up.” After being on the receiving end of a number of lopsided results during its final year in Division One in 2012, Sunshine Heights was able to establish itself in the Division Two competition this season and made finals. Dragons president John Stewart was confident his side would avoid the bottom six but said the committee believed there were more important things than the division the club competes in. “To be honest, the on-field success in the seniors is a nice by-product of trying to get some of the club culture right,” he said. “If we were to find ourselves playing third division football but we had a strong junior program and we were heading in the right direction in other areas, I would not care at all which division we were playing in. “We pride ourselves on participation levels and our place in the community much more than how we are doing on the park.” The 14 teams in Division Two are, North Footscray, Glen Orden, Parkside, Manor Lakes, Wyndhamvale, Sunshine Heights, Caroline Springs, Albanvale, Braybrook, Sanctuary Lakes, West Footscray, Laverton, North Sunshine and Tarneit.
Based on last year’s ladder positions, Albanvale and Laverton will be forced to fight hard Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI to remain in Division Two. 100749.

Bees weigh options By ADEM SARICAOGLU IT IS not yet known whether Werribee City will be in the established Victorian Premier League or the newly-proposed, but troubled National Premier League in 2014. Either way, though, the Bees are looking forward to next year. Werribee City is one of the final applicants for the Football Federation Victoria-proposed NPL competition. But with the implementation of the new league currently on hold, Werribee City’s immediate future remains in limbo. Should the NPL not come to fruition, the Bees will find themselves in the VPL for the first time since the mid-1990s after finishing second in State League One this season. City coach Nino Ragusa is immensely proud of what his group was able to produce in 2013.
“They actually showed this elating desire to be successful and chase what we were chasing,” Ragusa said. “They’d never (earned promotion) before, they had confidence in themselves (and) they had confidence in what I do and what I put forward to them.” The Bees’ final game of the season, a home fixture against Sunshine George Cross, was a virtual grand final. Though no silverware was up for grabs for the two clubs (who were equal on points going in), the winner was guaranteed second place on the table and hence, would be promoted into the state’s premier competition. In a tense, high-quality battle, it was City’s Leigh Minopoulos who produced an excellent finish for the only goal of the game. The win capped off what has been a whirlwind couple of years for the Bees, who not so long ago found themselves in State League Two.
Under Ragusa, City has been priming itself for the NPL and thus chosen to nurture a wealth of young talent in favour of luring in a lot of experience. However, as it now seems more likely the Bees will instead be part of the VPL next year, Ragusa admits he’ll need to change some of his philosophies in order to be competitive. “Once we find out where we’re playing then I’ll sit down with the club and we’ll see what kind of resources they can put behind me to achieve whatever we have to achieve next year,” Ragusa said. “If it’s the Premier League (VPL), obviously we haven’t achieved two promotions in the last three years to go up and struggle and come straight back down. “We would love to be competitive and stay there, but if it’s the NPL, then we’ve already got a young team to take us through the next three years in that type of environment.”
Devils shake off finals disappointment By ADEM SARICAOGLU WERRIBEE women’s basketball coach Lloyd Klaman is happy with what his Devils achieved in 2013, despite the heartbreaking ending they had to endure in the Big V Division Two finals series. The Devils were clearly the best team of the regular season and went into the semi-final series as favourites against the Keilor Thunder. But it was the underdog Thunder, led brilliantly by Jodi Impey, who swept Werribee in two games to advance to the grand final series. “You have to be happy with the season,” Klaman said. “You’re disappointed with the way it ended but all credit to Keilor, they beat us fair and square. “Jodi Impey was just fantastic. You could see why everybody’s been raving over her for the last 10 years, and I think she was the difference. “Some of our young girls probably didn’t play at their best but that happens with kids. “They’re a lot more up and down than the more experienced girls and they’ll have good games and then have bad games, but you’ve got to take the ride with them.” Klaman has been re-appointed to lead
Lloyd Klaman during game two of the semi-final series against Keilor Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT earlier this year. 103694 the Devils in Division One next season and is expecting to do so with a bit more experience at his disposal, as Werribee has also entered a new youth team for 2014. “We’re moving up so it’s going to get harder, but I’d imagine we’re probably going to add a couple of older people to the squad,” Klaman said. “Some of the girls who were playing seniors will probably go down and play in the youth because we’ve still got some 15 and 16-year-olds and some will stay
up, but we definitely need to top up if we’re going to go into Division One.” Lisa Troyahn, Emma Coyne and Elisha Burnette, labelled as the ‘big three’ by Klaman, have all signed on for next season, while the Devils will also welcome back Georgia Perry, who missed much of 2013 through injury. The Devils are also expecting to announce their new men’s coach in coming weeks. It is understood 2013 assistant Mark Hughes is the favourite to land the gig.

FOOTSCRAY United saved itself from an outright defeat on the road against Williamstown CYMS in the VTCA North Division on Saturday. Resuming day two with its innings stranded at 8/62, United was bowled out for 85 chasing the CYs’ 179. No Footscray United batsman posted anything beyond 20 as Andrew Walshe ran riot with the ball, claiming 7/26 and seven maidens off 17.5 overs. Going for an outright win, CYMS then set out to bat through the next 32 overs of the day, declaring its second innings at 4/117 with Damitha Hunukumbura unbeaten on 52. Chasing an unlikely 212 for victory, the Footscray United top order planted its foot at the crease to survive the final 29 overs of the game, only losing two wickets for 77 runs. Steven McKay (30) and Darren McLellan (21) were the two batsmen in the middle when the match was declared over. Williamstown CYMS is eighth on the table while Footscray United sits 11th. NEWPORT continued its promising start to the Baseball Victoria Summer League competition with a 5-0 home win against fellow Western rival, Sunshine, on Sunday. The Rams moved their record to 2-2 but the Eagles remain the only winless team in all of Division One and are currently perched on the bottom of the Conference Two table four rounds into the season. This Saturday Sunshine will travel to Doncaster while Newport will also be on the road against Preston. Meanwhile in Division Two action on Sunday, Williamstown suffered its first loss of the year, going down 8-4 away to Fitzroy. However, luckily for the Wolves, Division Two’s only other 3-0 team going into the weekend also went down for its first defeat of the year.
The Werribee Giants handed Berwick its first loss of the year to move to a 2-1 record after a 5-4 win. In Division Three, Footscray went down 14-5 to Ormond. WILLIAMSTOWN has added two more big names to its 2014 playing list with Sean Tighe and Adam Marcon joining the club. A former Western Jets TAC Cup player, Tighe arrives from Western Australian Football League club South Fremantle, where he is coming off a brilliant 2013. The ruckman played in 19 games during the season and averaged 19 possessions. Tighe also finished second in the South Fremantle best-and-fairest. Williamstown’s football manager Chris Dixon said Tighe was a critical signing for the Seagulls. “He fills an important role for us and his flexibility is critical,” he said. “We’ve always said we would be chasing key position players and Sean fits that mould. “We see him playing predominately forward and also supporting Cam Wood in the ruck so it’s a really important signing for us.” “It’s great to bring back former Western Jets players to the club and we’re delighted that Sean has committed for the next two years.” MEANWHILE Marcon joins the Seagulls after three years at VFL rival, the Northern Blues. Marcon won the Blues’ bestand-fairest in 2012 as well as the VFL Coaches Award. A knee injury interrupted his 2013 campaign but he still managed 10 games and initial selection in the VFL State Side. Marcon has played a total of 40 senior VFL games and will add to the Seagulls’ emerging midfield depth. Williamstown senior coach Andy Collins said that he was delighted with Adam’s decision to join the Seagulls. “He is a quality footballer and a quality character,” he said. “Adam is excited by the opportunities that we can offer him as a stand-alone club and we are excited to work with him.”

Time for cricket to shine bright CRICKET has certainly taken over from the footy now that the overly long trade period has finished. I am not a fan of the AFL taking up the headlines for the entire year. The English side has arrived and it will be very interesting to see how former Hoppers Crossing player Stuart Broad is welcomed by the Aussie fans. I have been told he is a great bloke by those that played with him at Hogans Rd but I am sure he is in for an MCG reception for the Boxing Day Test to rival that of John Snow in his heyday. The Werribee Cricket Club and Football Club Ashes Dinner has been moved to Wednesday 27 November at the Werribee Sports Club and will feature the very colourful Rodney Hogg. Tickets for the dinner are available through Janelle on 9741 9862 for $50 per person for a 2 course dinner with drinks at bar prices. IT IS the season of cricket functions and I was the MC for a roast for local legend Michael “Tocka” O’Keefe last weekend at the Yarraville Club

Cricket Club. Footscray greats Barry Watson and Tony Dodemaide were there for what was a great night to celebrate Tocka’s career and retirement from the game. Or at least we thought that was the case. Truth is, he played the next day in the fourths, so he could fulfil his dream of playing with his son, and who could blame him for that. There are few more genuine people in local sport than “Tocka” and I was very pleased to be a small part of the night. The video done by his teammates was priceless as was the message from his mate from Warrnambool Dave Hughes. LES Twentyman loves to bring up a cricket day from the 1980s, when he teamed up with Andrew Gibson, and I partnered Brad Hardie, in a double wicket competition at Sunshine High School to raise some money for charity. The end result was Brad and I were thrashed, I rolled my ankle and missed a game the following weekend for Hoppers Crossing. The good news was, we raised some money for the 20th man Fund, and I knocked the helmet of Les’ head with the first ball I bowled. Les has an Ashes Breakfast coming up on Wednesday 20 November from 7am in the Champions Room at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre at Albert Park. For more details contact Bronwyn on 9689 4800 or Bronwyn@20thmanfund. com.au. The panel includes Merv, Deano, Hoggy, Dodders and Tony Jones as MC. THE Hoppers Crossing Junior Netball Association is looking for teams for a twilight competition to be run on Thursday nights starting on 14 November and finishing in February 2014. They are looking for ladies, mens, mixed and all abilities teams to be part of the competition. I AM looking forward to the final few meetings of the Spring Racing Carnival on SEN. The feedback on the email, Twitter and Facebook has been fantastic. The Werribee resident competed at her first National Bowls Championships last month and wasted no time making herself at home on the greens. Sylvester and her Victorian team-mates won the gold medal in the girls’ fours event. “That is the first time I have ever played in nationals,” she said. “I was nervous at the start but every end that we played I was getting better and better. Then I didn’t feel nervous at all after a while. I just wanted to keep going. “I was very surprised how well we did as a team together to get the gold.” In the team’s first match, Victoria defeated pre-tournament favourites Queensland before also notching up wins against Tasmania and New South Wales to seal the gold. “When we played Queensland, we thought it was going to be a really hard match because they were the favourites but we just smashed them,” Sylvester said. “After we won (the gold medal), we just kept hugging.

Cats bounce back By ADEM SARICAOGLU
Werribee Hyundai SALE EXTENDED MUST END 31st OCTOBER
HOPPERS Crossing coach Darrel Brown has put the acid on his team to keep improving in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Senior Division. After suffering a heavy opening round loss to Airport West St Christopher’s, the Cats bounced back in the best way possible on Saturday against Keilor at Hogans Road Reserve. Coming into the second day’s play having already secured first innings points seven days earlier, Hoppers Crossing went on to beat the Blues outright by 10 wickets. However Brown told Star on Sunday his side has been put on notice to make sure it doesn’t rest on its laurels. “It’s still a young team in age but I think this is three seasons now that most of these guys have played together, and to get that experience is what the top division is all about,” Brown said. “They know that this year is make or break. The guys have to lift now. It’s about time, and especially the younger guys. “There’s no more excuses,
Sanka Abeywuran made an unbeaten 26 in the first innings against Keilor. 108692 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI so if we don’t make the finals, it’s a fail,” Brown said. Resuming the second day’s play only two wickets down in its first innings, Hoppers Crossing, brilliantly led by Brown’s 73, declared 98 runs ahead of Keilor before going on to bowl the Blues out once more for just 119. Needing only 22 runs for victory, the Cats got the job done for no loss of wickets within five overs. “We went pretty well, but in saying that Keilor didn’t have as
strong a team as usual,” he said. “But you still have to go out there no matter what and do the job, and for the second day my thoughts were to go for an outright win.” Hoppers Crossing will again face one of its local rivals in Yarraville Club in round three, beginning this weekend. Brown said it would be a good indicator of where his side sat in the Senior Division. “It’ll determine a lot for where we go from there,” he said.

Roadstar Pathfinder finds its own way THE all-new Nissan Pathfinder family SUV sets a new benchmark in driving and is now available in Australia. This next generation SUV is designed for families. Every detail has been meticulously considered, from the modern styling to new levels of comfort achieved thanks to interior luxuries, both big and small. With seven seats as standard and an ingenious EZ Flex seating system which makes the third row easily accessible and comfortable for all, the family will board and exit like never before. Once inside, the Tri-Zone climate control, which comes standard across the range, and the Tri-Zone entertainment, available on selected models, will have all occupants wishing journeys were just that little bit longer. The roomy interior of the all-new Nissan Pathfinder has a whopping 2259 litres of cargo space when the second and third row seats are folded flat. The second row splits 60/40, and the third 50/50 to give numerous options for carrying both passengers and awkward loads. Then there’s the ingenious under-floor storage area, with even more room to stow stuff or keep valuables out of sight. The all-new Nissan Pathfinder range offers the option of two wheel drive or intuitive four wheel drive variants, as well as smooth responsive acceleration thanks to the next generation CVT, towing capability and the innovative around view monitor that makes parking safer and easier than ever.
Get down to your local dealership to test drive the all new Nissan Pathfinder. This is the ultimate SUV for the modern family. There is a host of safety features as standard across the range including: five star ANCAP safety rating, six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, reverse parking camera with predictive path technology, reversing sensors, vehicle
dynamic control, traction control system, antilock braking system, brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution. Visit Werribee Nissan at 14-26 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, open from Monday to Saturday, 8.30am-6pm, and Sunday, 10am5pm, or call 9974 5800 to test
drive this vehicle. Alternatively visit Western Nissan on the corner of Western Highway and Christies Rd, Caroline Springs, open from Monday to Saturday, 8am-6pm and Sunday, 10am-5pm, or call 8361 8255 for more information.

Kia’s newest performance car, the Cerato Koup.
Kia’s power to perform KIA Australia has released the all-new turbocharged Kia Cerato Koup in Australia this month, marking the first performance orientated model in the company’s local line-up. A 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, powers the Kia Cerato Koup SX developing 150kW of power at 6000rpm, and 264Nm of torque from 1750-4500rpm, the turbo is the most powerful Koup ever. The Kia Cerato Koup will share the performance limelight with the hotly anticipated Kia Pro_cee’d GT, which will arrive early next year, also powered by the same engine. As well as the turbocharged Kia Koup, a regular 2.0-litre naturally aspirated model will also be in the line-up. Set to replace the outgoing sub-$25,000 model, the new 2.0-litre direct injected four-cylinder engine produces
129kW at 6500rpm and 209Nm at 4700rpm, an increase over the outgoing car’s 115kW and 194Nm. Both engines will be available with either a six-speed manual or auto, with Turbo scoring paddle shifters. From the outside the twodoor Koup’s design is a change from the previous model’s sedan like shape, with a more sporty focused theme. The previous car’s appeal to the design conscious, but not necessarily performancefocused buyer will change with the arrival of the turbo. All models will have Kia’s FlexSteer steering system that alters weighting between three modes - Comfort, Normal, and Sport. All Koup models also run a strut-front, torsion-beam rear suspension set-up. Kia is expected to launch
