■ The annual free Cardinia community Christmas...

Lunch’s canned By DANIELLE GALVIN

THE annual free Cardinia Community Christmas lunch will not go ahead this year, but will be back bigger and better next year. Volunteer organiser Sue Johns said there were several reasons why the free luncheon would not take place in 2013, but assured it would definitely be on next year. “Last year, one of the dedicated volunteers passed away three days following one of our finest Christmas Days within years,” she said. “I felt as there have been quite a lot of years where I have organised everything up until a few weeks prior to Christmas. I must take note of my own health and realise without your health you have nothing. “Although I express I do not take ownership of this event, there are requirements, processes, legalities that persons who organise these things need to adhere to.” Next year, the annual Christmas lunch has the support of local businesses and members of the community. Ms Johns said the lunch for vulnerable people in the shire wasn’t finished and there was plenty more to give. “As my personal health has been a problem for a couple of years, for this year I needed to take time out for myself as I organise this event beginning very early in the year as it does not take just a few weeks to make this event possible,” she said. “I would advise people to contact the 4Cs if they require food on Christmas Day and I believe one of my counterparts may be trying with her church to arrange something for Christmas Day.” Ms Johns said she wished everyone a happy and safe Christmas but she needed another year to get the event

enough and then I will be commencing work on the following Cardinia Community Christmas and no doubt each year following,” she said. “I would like to thank our Cardinia

Shire Council, Ande Rai, O’Connors Meats, Rotary, Pakenham Senior Citizens, Terry’s Discounts, Pakenham Fruit Supply, Ritchies IGA and all of the invaluable volunteers who provide

their time to make this event possible, as they have done for years, although this year they will take a break. “As normal, I will be liasing with all next year in 2014.”

Big bucks help to fight cancer By BRIDGET SCOTT THE team at Gippsland Foods were tickled pink by the success of their breast cancer fund-raiser late last month. An employee of the Pakenham company, Jacqui Lappen, was thrilled that the business raised more than $2000 and was overwhelmed by the support of many local businesses. “It went extremely well,” she said. “We raised $1349 from the raffle, and made $135 from home-made jams.” With a number of staff from the Pakenham business being touched by cancer, the fund-raiser was close to the hearts of many employees, who Ms Lappen said greatly appreciated it. “We will definitely do it again; it was well and truly worth it.” Plans are already in the works for a prostate cancer fund-raiser, which was mooted by some of the male employees. Ms Lappen attributed a great part of the success to colleague Heather Pumphrey, who sold many of the last-minute raffle tickets, as well as surrounding local businesses. “I want to thank all of the people who donated, because without them we would have never had the prizes.’

Schools GO flat out STUDENTS from across 14 schools in the Cardinia Shire will put their best foot forward this ‘GOvember’ in an attempt to become more physically active. Participating schools have each selected a day in November on which the children are asked to actively get to and from school, by either walking, riding, scooting or skating. Students unable to get to school by foot will be required to run laps of their school’s football oval or basketball court. The school with the highest number of ‘GOvember’ participants will be announced the winner, and as a result, students will be allowed to bring a piece of equipment with wheels to school, along with their helmet, and embark on a tricky obstacle course around the school. The primary schools taking part in GOvember are Bunyip, Pakenham Springs, Beaconsfield, St Brigid’s, St Patrick’s, Beaconsfield Upper,

Garfield, Pakenham Consolidated, Gembrook, Lang Lang, Nar Nar Goon, Bayles, Pakenham Hills and Kooweerup. Cardinia Shire mayor Graeme Moore said getting to school by foot or bike was a great way for kids to fulfil the suggested amount of exercise for their age group. “It’s recommended that children get 60 minutes of vigorous physical activity each day,” he said. “Actively travelling to and from school is a great way to reach this target and it also means less traffic on the roads.” “GOvember is just one of many ways the council is working with the community to encourage children to be more physically active, via our Streets Ahead program.” GOvember is funded by VicHealth and It is an initiative of the VicHealth Walk to School and Cardinia Shire Council Streets Ahead programs.

HUNGRY pet pooches turned out on Saturday for a special doggie barbecue. At Pakenham Produce and Saddlery at Bald Hill Road on Saturday, staff put on a barbecue for dogs as a way to raise money for the Mobile Pet Ambulance (MPA). While the weather was poor, Jzanelle Wilkens from Pakenham Produce said it was a great event, the first of its kind. She said they loved to support Julie Flint from MPA, and Alice Needham from the Diamond Dog Food and Bakery donated all of the delicious dog-friendly sausages to sell to customers.

Healthy lifestyle beats diabetes

THE Pakenham Gazette will be more accessible to readers with the launch of its new ePaper. By BRITTANY PIASENTIN LEADING a normal, healthy life is the key to living with diabetes, according to Martin Bacon, who has lived with the condition his whole life. On 15 October, Pakenham resident Martin Bacon was among over 30 Victorians to receive the Kellion Victory Medal for living with diabetes for 50 years. The award recognises the lifestyle and choices that enable diabetics in Victoria to live as normally as possible, although Mr Bacon sees the funny side. “I laugh about it with my sons because it is quite funny that they give you a medal for living for 50 years,” he said. Mr Bacon’s message to diabetic people is to live a life that is as normal as possible, exercising regularly, relaxing scheduled meal times and trying to fit in the world rather than making it fit in with you. He saw the proof of his own philosophy when he attended the award ceremony for the Kellion Victory Awards. “I noticed and was very impressed to see that every recipient of the award was in shape, and had obviously looked after themselves. The only person in the whole ceremony who was in a wheelchair was not a recipient,” he said. Mr Bacon was diagnosed at 13 months old, when his health continuously deteriorated while he was in hospital for over a month. A student nurse suggested testing for diabetes, and after rapidly improving, Mr Bacon has since been told that he became a benchmark

ers interested in the area to access local news and sport. The ePaper edition is enhanced with the latest digital tools, including RSS feeds, social networking and links to websites and email addresses. Stories can be shared online and there’s the option of setting up keyword email alerts.

Martin Bacon receives the Kellion Victory Award from Lieutenant-Governor Marilyn Warren for living with diabetes for 50 years. for the testing for diabetes on babies. In the 50 years that he has been living with diabetes, Mr Bacon says that much has improved in the treatment, medication and monitoring of diabetes, and has been able to live a healthy life with the exception of a change of insulin. “There was a bad time when they changed the insulin medication; I was taken to hospital in an ambulance 32 times in one year. My wife at the time recognised the symptoms that everything was not OK and saved my life.” In Pakenham, 1630 residents live with Type One and Type Two diabetes.

Recognising the symptoms when a diabetic is in trouble is something that Mr Bacon encourages friends, family and colleagues of a person living with diabetes to be aware of and look out for, especially during the night. Common symptoms include confusion, fatigue and the diabetic acting as if they were drunk. GNOMES and Oompa Loompas ran rampant around Lakeside Pakenham last week when students of Lakeside Lutheran College organised ‘The Great Lake’s Race - Where’s Wally?’ event. On Wednesday 6 November, year-11 Business Management students of the school organised the race to raise food, money and toys for the Cardinia Churches Combined Caring (4Cs) Christmas Hamper Appeal. The race had teams of students and teachers dress up in diverse-themed costumes, racing around the Lakeside area. The teams had to solve clues and complete challenges to find the hidden location of Wally. Lakeside Lutheran College Business Management teacher Greg Ashcroft said the race was a great success with a large quantity of food, money and toys being raised for the 4Cs charity. To donate to the 4Cs Christmas Hamper Appeal, visit www.the4cs.org.au or call 5941 2268.

The last of the Oaks By BRIDGET SCOTT THE Pakenham Oaks Day marked the end of an era this year, when more than 3000 people turned out for the last Oaks to be held at the Pakenham Racecourse. Flocks of fashionable fillies frocked up for ladies’ day this year, with some backing a winner while others strutted their stuff on the catwalk in the always popular Fashions on the Fields. The men didn’t let the women steal all the glory of the day, with some suited up lads trying their hand at the males section of the fashions. Hayley Conn from the Pakenham Racing Club said organisers of the Pakenham race day were thrilled with how the event went. “We were very happy with the success of the day and it was a great day for the club,” she said. For more coverage on the Pakenham Oaks, see this week’s Pakenham Gazette.

TERRY (Tear Off a Strip, Socially Speaking, News 7 November) needs to read page 4 of the Casey Road Management Plan (V4.1). This states in respect of nature strips “nature strips in urban areas are the responsibility of the neighbouring landowner to maintain”. He may not agree with the law but to assert that it is not the property owner’s responsibility is to mislead readers, to their possible cost. Ken Butcher, Cranbourne.

Red light alert THUMBS down to the stupid driver of a white car who came flying through the red light on Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Lesdon Avenue and South Gippsland Highway. Myself and two other drivers had already entered the intersection, traffic to my right in the left hand land had stopped when a white car, in the right hand lane, travelling way too fast, came straight through the red light. Luckily I spotted him at the last minute and braked hard sounding my horn. Unfortunately, I was too shocked to get his licence plate number. Maybe the driver of the blue four-wheel drive who turned in front of me and followed the white car into the Bunnings car park may have got his number. This is a very dangerous intersection. There have already been two fatalities and many other accidents. I use this intersection several times a day and there are many cars and trucks who disregard the red light. I believe we need a red light camera here or a yellow flashing light warning of an impending stop ahead. Denise, Cranbourne.

CONGRATULATIONS on the article Disabled Cash Funding Statue (Gazette, 6 November). Impressive investigative journalism. Under no circumstances can it be deemed acceptable to fund a statue using resources earmarked specifically to improve disability and aged care access and building infrustructure. There are many community organisations crying out for funding so they can assist as many as possible. What a slap in the face to see that they may have missed out on a wheelchair ramp or other facility improvements because an unwanted statue has been funded and placed in High Street, Berwick. Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras needs to explain how, in this case, the community grants program has been responsive to community needs. No community needs a statue. There should be a full investigation into how this has occurred and why there is a discrepancy in who actually receives the funding. This will not be the end of this long-running saga. The Spiridon Louis statue has been made possible through inappropriate funding and, as more information comes to light, it totally vindicates the Berwick community and its stance against this out of place statue. Norm Morrish, Secretary, Residents, Ratepayers and Friends of Berwick Village.

Socially speaking Casey Fields a dilemma In relation to ‘Casey Fields firms as favourite’ (online 8 November) Colleen Jackson: A poor decision by Casey Council. The council members need to practice what they have been preaching. They have decided to name a suburb after a sporting facility. Residents were advised that it could not be a name that was already in use. Casey Fields should never have been an option as a choice of name for a new suburb. Nothing wrong with the name itself but it is already in use by a fairly well known sporting complex. Trying to read through the council agenda for last night’s meeting has highlighted how absurd the decision is, so much information regarding Casey Fields but not one bit was relevant to the new suburb. Imagine the outcry if a suburb was named Etihad or MCG - same thing isn’t it? Leanne: Really disappointed. Casey Fields is a sporting complex not a suburb name. Guessing by the results that it was the council who did the vote counting. Jo: Casey Fields will only cause more con-

Ray’s say

fusion to all services, postal etc. Ridgeway seemed to be a more favourable choice for us. Linda: I would like to know who actually did vote for Casey Fields. No one I’ve come across yet. Nicole: Absolute disgrace. I really hope the people vote them out next election. They purposely held off making a decision until after this election but I don’t think they will escape it next election. Nancy: Would you believe this? Both the recent mayor Amanda Stapledon and current mayor Geoff Ablett said to me that they would never, ever go down this path.

Fired up for fitness In relation to ‘Mo time for burpees’ (Berwick News, 7 November): Carmel: Yay Oliver! Your dedication to your cause and to your own health is just awesome. 1000 Burpees coming up.

UN multi-faith mission By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CASEY’S Multi-faith Network may get the chance to address the United Nations in New York. The Mayor of Casey will call upon the State Government and State Opposition to support a bid for the group to speak at the famous UN headquarters in Manhattan. In a notice of motion that he plans to submit next week, Casey mayor Geoff Ablett will call for the council to meet with the State Government and Opposition to discuss the viability of the Casey Multi-faith Network travelling to UN headquarters in New York to present its mission objectives and explain its community involvement. The development comes after Cr Ablett spoke of the virtues of the Casey Multi-faith at a special dinner last month to celebrate his appointment as mayor, calling for the group

to meet with delegates at the UN. “I’d like the multi-faith to put a presentation together for the UN,” Cr Ablett said this week. “I will recommend that council write to both State Government and State Opposition to co-ordinate a meeting regarding the concept.” Cr Ablett, a Casey Multi-faith delegate along with deputy mayor Amanda Stapledon, said the network’s message of tolerance and harmony had to be heard on a global scale. “Everyone turns on the TV and sees conflict between various faiths overseas, whether it’s English or on the West Bank and one of the first things I did was to organise Multifaith delegates on the council,” he said. “Casey is the biggest municipality in the state, with 50-odd families moving in a week from different faith groups.

“We need to tolerate and understand people’s differences.” Jim Reiher, president of the Casey Multi-faith Network, said he was humbled by Cr Ablett’s UN suggestion and agreed that the network’s message was one that the whole world needed to hear. “It would be the opportunity of a lifetime,” Mr Reiher said. “We would need the help of political channels and Australia’s seat on the Security Council could also be an advantage.” But Mr Reiher said a pitch to the United Nations detailing the multifaith concept should involve other interfaith networks from Victoria, which now has more than 40 multifaith and interfaith groups, particularly the Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network which is celebrating its 25th anniversary next year. “The Dandenong Interfaith is the

oldest in Australia and an extraordinarily positive group,” he said. “We need to get the other interfaiths involved, it shouldn’t be any other way.” Cr Ablett said he will contact other multi-faith and interfaith networks in the region to gauge their interest regarding a potential UN presentation, including groups from Dandenong, Cardinia and Frankston. At a special council meeting on 28 October, the City of Casey formally recognised the Casey Multi-faith Network for delivering its multi-faith statement in council meetings. To find out more about religious and faith organisations in Casey, contact City of Casey Customer Service on 9705 5200 or visit www.casey.vic. gov.au to view the multi-faith statement.

Crossing nightmare By BRIDGET COOK WHEN Amanda Stapledon was on her Mayor’s Walk for Disability earlier this year, she got to experience first-hand the inconvenience faced by the Hampton Park community every day. As the convoy of people taking part tried to cross Pound Road from the seniors centre to continue on their journey, they were forced to wait about 10 minutes before they could cross safely. Hampton Park Seniors Centre president Neil Shepard said that was where their fresh appeal for a pedestrian crossing along that stretch of road started. “I said to Cr Stapledon, ‘now you know how we feel trying to cross this road’,” he said. “And our campaign started from there really. We were advised to start up a petition.” At last week’s Casey council meeting, Councillor Damien Rosario tabled a petition on behalf of the residents with 565 signatures seeking a commitment to the provision of a pedestrian crossing on Pound Road. Mr Shepard said this issue had been brought to the attention of VicRoads on numerous occasions in the past. He said the lack of a pedestrian crossing was affecting the whole community, which became evident as they went around Hampton Park collecting signatures. “You take your life into your own hands trying to cross that road,” he said. “There is also a retirement near the seniors centre, and they said they couldn’t cross Pound Road to get to the bus stop on the other side. “We’ve got school children telling us they had problems crossing the road too.

Casey Councillor Damien Rosario and Hampton Park Seniors Centre president Neil Shepard, with other members of the community who signed the petition calling for a pedestrian crossing on Pound Road, Hampton Park. Picture: MEAGAN ROGERS “There’s a crossing supervisor further down the road, but what happens if they are late or like now when exams are on and students are going to school at different times? “The feedback we got from resident was that it was about time something was being done.” Cr Rosario said the council would advocate on behalf of residents to address this community safety issue. “Crossing Pound Road is quite dangerous and many describe it as taking your life into your own hands,” he said. “Even when the road is quiet, elderly residents have trouble crossing as the curbs are high and nature strips are not flat and can cause injury if you are not careful. “One of the major access issues is that most shops, doctors and other medi-

cal services are located on the opposite side of Pound Road from the seniors centre. “The nearest traffic lights to safely cross Pound Road are located near Vanessa Drive, about 1km away and Hallam Road intersection, about 800 metres away. “Near the seniors centre would be an ideal middle point for a pedestrian crossing.” VicRoads acting regional director Con Stasinos said they had undertaken detailed investigations at this site to determine the most appropriate treatment option to improve pedestrian access. “As a result of these investigations, a proposal to install pedestrian operated signals on Pound Road near Highland Avenue will be considered for future funding in the context of state-wide priorities,” he said.

Met with ‘lost’ sibling By BRIDGET SCOTT

The huge family reunion made front page of local UK papers. 110112

WHO would have ever thought that a Hampton Park resident would make international headlines for being a guest at her own sister’s wedding? Ordinarily, it wouldn’t, but in the case of Janis Richardson-Burns her attendance at this wedding was quite unique, given it was the first time she had ever met her sister and the bride-to-be. At the age of 15, Ms Richardson-Burns migrated from the United Kingdom to Australia to live with her aunt and uncle. She left behind 11 siblings. Her 12th sibling Jane was born after she migrated.

Ms Richardson-Burns thought her sister Jane’s wedding was the perfect opportunity to revisit her homeland and be part of a huge family reunion. She said it was fantastic to catch up with her siblings, whom she had not seen in more than 40 years, plus meet another for the first time. “It just felt like I already knew her,” the Hampton Park resident said. Ms Richardson-Burns said she was in high demand while visiting, with all of her brothers and sisters asking when they would have their time with her. During her trip, the mother of four also visited her birthplace Scotland. She is already

excited for another trip back in two years’ time. She said although it was hard to leave, she was ready for her trip back to Australia, which came with many unforgettable memories. The huge family reunion did not go unpublicised during her trip, making the front page of the Salford Advertiser, and also featuring in two other papers in the UK. Ms Richardson-Burns said she had felt like an ‘orphan’ in Australia, living away from the rest of her family, but vowed to remain in touch with her siblings.

Three-tier tour CASEY youth interested in politics, law or a career in the public service have the opportunity to apply for an invaluable experience. The City of Casey is again offering young people the opportunity to join the 2014 Australia Day Study Tour. For the past 29 years the tour has provided a group of young people with an opportunity to learn more about the three tiers of Australian Government. The successful applicants will learn about Local Government at the City of Casey Civic Centre in Narre Warren with a guided tour followed by observing a council meeting. They will then spend a day at Parliament House in Melbourne learning more about State Government by meeting politicians, touring the facilities and attending a sitting of Parliament in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council. The group will then fly to Canberra to learn about the Federal Government at Parliament House for four days by meeting with politicians, including leaders of both parties and attending sittings of Commonwealth Parliament. City of Casey mayor Geoff Ablett encouraged all eligible youths to apply. “Each year council is pleasantly surprised by the outstanding young people who apply and this year we are hoping to receive even more applications,” he said. Nominations close on Friday 22 November. Interested applicants must meet five eligibility requirements before they apply for the program, which can be found at www. casey.vic.gov.au/adst.

The analog TV switch off is happening on 10 December 2013* – and there’s no turning back. After this date you won’t see anything if you’re not ready for digital-only TV.

Reno permits do apply

What do I have to do?

By BRIDGET COOK

Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either: • one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or • a new TV with a built-in digital tuner. Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to. Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your antenna and cabling. If you have any other questions, or to find your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.

Don’t put it off any longer. Get ready for digital TV today. *Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

A CASEY resident has been fined $30,000 for illegally converting a carport into a rooming house in Cranbourne. The City of Casey took action against the resident for converted a carport into habitable rooms without obtaining a relevant building permit. The rooming house owner was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of $30,000 as well as additional costs to the council. In addition to the fine, the owner was also ordered to re-instate the carport to its original condition. City of Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said the council took a range of proactive measures to identify and pursue illegal alterations to structures within the community. “Council believes that the health and safety of all Casey residents is paramount and will continue to play a proactive role to ensure residents are aware of their obligations to obtain the necessary building permits prior to carrying out work,” he said. “Residents who make illegal alterations to houses and other structures in contravention of the Victorian Building Act will be held accountable.” For more information on building obligations and requirements visit the City of Casey website www.casey.vic.gov.au/building-planning/building-advice or phone 9705 5200.

A GROUP of Casey students recently ticked off a major milestone of a 12-month project when they completed the Kokoda Track. Seven Cranbourne Secondary College students and one Fountain Gate Secondary College student prepared for six months before they set off to Papua New Guinea to complete the trek on 20 September to 1 October. Cranbourne Secondary College teacher Stephen Lynch, who accompanied the students, said it wasn’t just about completing the track but also a number of other aspects.

“The program is a 12-month commitment,” he said. “The first 20 weeks consisted of training and team building activities that developed physical fitness and prepared participants for the challenge of a lifetime by walking the Kokoda Track. “This life-changing experience is followed by a further six months of community service activities, where participants regularly volunteer their time to local not-for-profit organisations and events such as Landcare projects, Surfing with the Disabled and working with the homeless and elderly. “These projects give young people an understanding of the

OPE SUND N NOV AY 1 FROM0 11-1PM

broader community and an enhanced appreciation of their own circumstances.” Mr Lynch said, adding that the fundamental philosophy of the program is the Spirit of Kokoda - mateship, endurance, courage and sacrifice. “It aims to teach young people that their achievements in life are directly related to the effort they contribute, whether that be at school, work, professionally or in personal relationships,” he said. “It also aims to teach young people that the consequences of choices they make will have a profound effect on their happiness, future, lifestyle and what they achieve.”

Arc of a life put back together By LACHLAN MOORHEAD AFTER a mental breakdown which saw him lose his house and his job, Bruce Austin is putting his life back together. Two and a half years after the catatonic episode, Bruce is excited to again be helping the YMCA Casey Arc management team co-ordinate a free mental health and wellness evening this month, following last year’s successful seminar. The Berwick father-of-four said his volunteering with Casey Arc continues to improve his health. “It’s all helped me a lot… it gets my eyes off myself. You get to talk to people and just help them,” he said. “I want to get rid of the stigma attached to mental health. It still has this stigma when it comes to talking about it openly and we need to dismantle that.”

The 53-year-old is familiar with this stigma. It was April 2010 when Bruce suffered his breakdown after working himself into the ground while running his own business. “I was working too much and basically ran myself dry. At first the doctors thought it was a heart attack but it turned out to be a catatonic episode,” Bruce said. “It was like the main switch in my head turned off. I ignored the warning signs. I was feeling tired all the time and eventually it catches up with you.” After being taken to Monash Hospital and then daily monitoring from the Casey Crisis Analysis Team (CAT), Bruce now sees a psychologist and psychiatrist once a month while volunteering part time at Casey Arc. “I was told to do 40 minutes of exercise a day, so I went to Casey Arc

because my wife already went there,” Bruce said. “Then the next step was to get involved with some volunteering work and I started doing it at Casey Arc. I helped lead an all-abilities walking group every Thursday and then last year helped run the Mental Health Evening.” Following a discussion with Casey Arc Manager Chris Hargreaves during which Bruce told his story, it was decided that others needed to hear it too. And this year Bruce is excited to have beyondblue on board, with one of their representatives speaking at the event. Keynote speakers at the free event, which will cater for up to 70 people, include Dr Monica O’Kelly - Director of CBT Australia and a Senior Lecturer of Psychology at Monash University, a

IN this day and age, technology rules. It doesn’t seem that long ago that people’s entertainment expectations changed forever with the release of the worlds first compact disc. This “unscratchable” digital technology, infinitely more versatile and portable than its 12” vinyl predecessor, became a distant memory to all but collectors or audio enthusiasts. Fast forward to today, the average five-yearold has a better grasp on utilising a smart phone than their parents do. The reality is that these devices, as well as our increasing dependence on them, are here to stay. Thankfully, despite some of these technologies becoming an intrusive distraction to our daily lives, we are now seeing a new breed of innovative technology based companies spawn from within the smart device category. One of these, Push Controls, provides application based functionality from any smart device to enable integration with other technological/ electronic devices. While the advancement in processing power within these smart devices generally eclipses the requirements of daily uses, most people go about their day-to-day activities unaware of their capacity. Over the last 10 years, there have been many novel attempts to integrate “convenience technologies” into what has become known as the modern smart home. The Big Picture People - Fountain Gate have been servicing the entertainment needs of the eastern suburbs for more than three years. In that time it has evolved with the building and construction industry to provide a full turnkey service for all customers. For those who are planning a new house or renovation, are interested in adding value to their home, reducing their monthly bill, or who would like to communicate with the delivery man at their front door even while at work, the 900 square metre showroom at Fountain Gate has 14 demonstration areas and one of the largest ranges of entertainment and AV products in the country. The store has something for everyone. Visitors can bring their ideas and their whole family to see just how affordable a new smart home can be. Climbers branch out WAS it a bird, or a plane? No, it was professional tree climbers as they converged on Casey at the weekend. Banjo Paterson Reserve in Lynbrook hosted the Victorian Tree Climbing Championships on Saturday. Tree climbers from across Australia and New Zealand competed in the four classes - Men’s Masters, Women’s Masters, Men’s Open and Student Grade. Spectators also enjoyed a marketplace style atmosphere with entertainment and activities including a supervised tree climb for children. News photographer DONNA OATES was there to catch all the action.

Mick Kelhart climbs straight up the tree for his chance in the speed climbing category.

Ben O’Ryan from Macclesfield is tired after completing his climb.

Rotary’s round for charity By BRIDGET SCOTT MEMBERS of Casey Rotary Club hold high hopes for a huge fundraiser next month which will see all monies raised go to not-for-profit organisations across the City of Casey. On 6 December, the Rotary group will hold its Annual Charity Golf Day at the Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Club. Casey Rotary Club’s John McGreal said he was looking forward to the event which he hopes will raise up to $20,000. “We raised about 14 or 15 thousand last year and are hoping to raise about $20,000 this year,” he said. With half the entries already taken spots are quickly filling and Mr McGreal urges anyone who wishes to get a place to grab a ticket soon. At only $115, guests will play a round of golf followed by a two course dinner that night, with entertainment from a live band and former AFL star Tommy Hafey. Mr McGreal is also excited for a new hole-in-one competition on the day, which will give golfers the

chance to claim $10,000 in prize money. With a number of local organisations set to benefit from the day, Officer’s Riding for the Disabled will be a big beneficiary. Sally Francis from the organisation will speak at the Rotary Club’s meeting next Monday. Riding for the Disabled aims to offer the same opportunities for those with disabilities, who would usually be unable to participate in events such as equestrian and horse riding. Other recipients from money raised on the day will include Windermere, the Hampton Park Uniting Church, Oz Child and blind school set to open in Berwick. Golf day tickets are still selling with a small amount also available for the two course meal that night for $55. For more information or to book a ticket phone John McGreal on 0403 118 854 or Kim Stillburn on 0417 126 496. The golf will kick of about noon on Friday 6 December, with dinner, auctions, raffles and live entertainment to follow that evening.

Award on board By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

Jonathan Bell was over the moon to receive a WorkSafe award in recognition of his hard work in helping injured employees return to work.

JONATHAN Bell was holidaying in Malaysia when he found out he had won a WorkSafe award for his involvement at Narre Warren Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic, but it didn’t stop him from celebrating. Jonathan, a musculoskeletal physiotherapist at the clinic, received the honour as part of the Victorian WorkCover Authority 25th annual WorkSafe Awards announced last month. The award recognised his outstanding achievements in helping people rehabilitate and return to work following an injury. Despite being nominated for the award in August following both a written and video application, Jonathan said he was shocked when he heard the news that he had won. “I was a bit surprised, there

are a lot of people out there who inspire a lot of people,” he said. “There are some people out there who are fantastic practitioners.” Jonathan said it was integral for a physiotherapist to have regular contact with their patient’s workplace. “I think it’s important to communicate with the workplace and to help get the injured person back to work and doing something meaningful,” he said. “We’ve been able to see over the years what works and what doesn’t. “Everyone wants to get back to work as quickly as possible.” State Government Assistant Treasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips congratulated the 10 winners of the WorkSafe Awards, from 323 entries, for being industry leaders in health and safety. “Whether it is coming up

with solutions to safety hazards, implementing a wellbeing program or helping an injured worker get back to work, the contributions and commitment of our finalists and winners contribute to safer workplaces,” Mr Rich-Phillips said. “I congratulate the award recipients and commend them on their dedication, their innovations and their hard work in workplace safety. “The WorkSafe Awards showcase innovative approaches to health and safety, return to work and health and wellbeing and also represent an opportunity for businesses to follow the example of leaders in this field.” For more information on the Narre Warren Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic, which also has remedial massage therapists and holds Pilates classes, phone 9704 8520.

Teachers learn how to build careers By CASEY NEILL MANUFACTURERS in Melbourne’s south-east need young workers to bolster their ageing workforce, and high youth unemployment continues to trouble the region. “Those two problems shouldn’t be able to co-exist,” Beacon Foundation’s Duncan McKimm said. And that’s where the national notfor-profit steps in with Manufacturing XL. With help from South East Business Networks (SEBN) it brings together businesses and schools to provide pathways into apprenticeships, traineeships and entry-level jobs. What’s stopping young people entering the field? Mr McKimm said it’s a lack of awareness of the opportunities available and misconceptions about what a career in the industry involves. “It’s about design and engineer-

ing know-how rather than muscle and dirty welding-bays,” he said. “When you ask kids ’what is manufacturing?’ most kids don’t have any idea.” Beacon’s aim is to inform students so they can make a choice to enter manufacturing. On 31 October Hallam Senior College and Keysborough College teachers toured four manufacturers to help them bring business into the classroom. “How to use the stuff businesses do every day to teach the curriculum,” Mr McKimm said. They visited Fantech in Dandenong South, Norden in Dandenong, Britannia in Mulgrave and Erntec in Scoresby to help them understand the manufacturing opportunities available to students. “Teachers can’t know everything about every industry, so it’s our job

to help explain and show them what those industries are all about,” Mr McKimm said. “There’s so much more to a job than a job description. “The idea of the day was that we’d develop a class with each one of those businesses that they’d then go and deliver before the end of the year.” These presentations are called ‘business blackboards’ and bring manufacturers into the classroom to teach a lesson based around their daily tasks. From there students can tour the manufacturer, apply for work experience and get guidance on study and job opportunities. Keysborough Secondary College teacher Peter Green was on the tour. He said kids regularly asked “what Fantech’s Pat Moynihan shows teachers Amanda Quinn, from Hallam am I going to use this for?” during Senior College, and Peter Green from Keysborough College what a lessons and he could now give them career in manufacturing is all about. 108671 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS some examples.

So - what’s in Stow? By RUSSELL BENNETT WHEN Pakenham Warriors favourite son Daniel Stow was asked last season what he most wanted to do before he pulled the team jersey on for the last time, playing once again with his younger brother Jamie was high on his list. The 30-year-old is about to get his chance - with 27-year-old Jamie joining him on the Warriors’ vastlyimproved Big V roster for the new season. The pair will be reunited on a competitive basketball court for the first time in at least six years after Jamie spent time in the Air Force in both Queensland and South Australia. And after having the past two seasons off representative basketball, and playing in what he describes as “a nothing sort of league”, the natural power-forward can’t wait to come back and make an impact with his hometown Warriors and big brother Daniel. Despite the obvious physical similarities, the two Stow boys will provide different, yet complimentary, skill-sets. Jamie is primarily inside player, while Daniel is known for his perimeter shooting. “I’ll set plenty of screens so he can get open on the outside,” Jamie said.

FOCUS ON IMPACT

baby brother, couldn’t resist a subtle dig, just to keep the 193-centimetretall Daniel honest - “He wants to be the Patty Mills of the Warriors,” he said. When it comes to Jamie’s potential impact on a young side with championship dreams, he just wants to contribute in any way he can. “(Coach) Ryan has spoken to me about the team wanting to improve their rebounding from last season so that’s probably one aim I have - to box out and get those rebounds,” he said.

“This is easily the biggest team I’ve ever been on - I think there’s huge opportunity to dominate inside and get everyone involved.” Daniel is salivating at the prospect too, and with good reason. “With guys like Jamie and Chris on the inside, hopefully that can draw opposing big blokes in and give our shooters on the outside more room to move.” Jamie said he doesn’t know how well Daniel can run the fast break, “but he can at least run from three point line to three point line!”

The Super Stows – Daniel, left, will reunite with slightly taller younger brother Jamie this year for the Pakenham Warriors Big V Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT side. 110032

Like rain... down to earth RAIN, hail or shine - it seems all Michael Hansford does is win. The Kooweerup Secondary College year-10 student recently took out the under-16 100, 200, and 400 metre trifecta at the School Sport Victoria (SSV) Secondary Track and Field Championships in Albert Park - following on from wins in the 100 and 200 in the under-15s last year. He quickly followed this year’s SSV meet with a win in the 100-metres and a third placing in the 200 in the Athletics Victoria All-Schools Track and Field Championships at the same venue. He’d never even run in an organised meet until 2011 and now he has the state and national titles - early next year - firmly in his sights. But the conditions were far from perfect for Michael’s perfect SSV run just a couple of weeks ago. In fact, he won the 400 by about four onehundredths-of-a-second in pouring rain - just edging ahead of the second-placed finisher, who slipped and fell as he lunged towards the line. Michael, though, helped him up as soon as he’d crossed the line. That’s just the 15-year-old’s nature. He said he “didn’t really” notice the inclement weather until after his race program had concluded. “As the day went on, the weather just got worse,” Michael said. “It started really cold and then it was pouring down rain for the 400. “Some people like that but I’m not the biggest fan of it, just because of how cold it is. “You don’t notice it in the run, but the water was sloshing around on the track.” Michael, from Pakenham, said he is now hungrier to do well in future 200-metre races because of his result at the All-Schools titles.

Ever hit a chip or pitch that goes flying across the green? This is usually caused by looking up too soon to see where the ball is going. Looking up too early causes the head and body to rise up during impact which doesn’t allow the club head to pass under the ball. • By looking for what’s under the ball momentarily after impact, the head and body will remain more still, which will help the club head pass under the ball and pop the ball into the air.

“I think we complement each other pretty well.” But Daniel was quick to point out one of the pitfalls of playing alongside his brother once again. “The worst part is when the refs confuse us… he whacks someone… and I cop the foul! “It used to happen a fair bit.” But both Stow boys are jumping out of their skin to start the new season, alongside an influx of new talent - including excitement machine Chris Jones. “It’s awesome to see the junior guys come through, specifically, Craig (Drew), Sean (Armstrong), Matt (D’Arcy) and Lee (Belton),” Daniel said. “They’ve all been in the program for a little while so it’s great to see them get their chance and Chris is sort of the cream on top. “Next season is going to be a lot of fun.” But Daniel is also working on ways to conserve his energy - as one of the team’s elder statesmen. “I’m just trying to get through the year,” he laughed. “Hopefully with guys like Chris coming through, and a few of the young guys, I can work on my towel-waving and just cheer people on.” And Jamie, the slightly taller

ELLINBANK and District Football League president Roger Gwynne has confirmed the existence of at least two separate 2014 fixtures for the western division. One revolves around the current seven-team format, while the other includes eight sides. Gwynne said: “You have to have two, just in case” and wouldn’t rule out another club joining the competition in the coming months. But he was quick to point out the league’s current priority was sorting out its junior structure, adding that the clubs needed more of a sense of immediacy in resolving the issue. “I will call a meeting with all club representatives soon to get this sorted out,” he said. “This was their idea in the first place, and we need to get it moving.”

Soggy job on damp day

Test your local sports knowledge... and WIN!

By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Blockbuster clash between West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier grade title aspirants Merinda Park and Kooweerup rests on a knife’s edge after the first day’s play at Donnelly Reserve. On a day when rain wreaked havoc throughout the region, play was delayed until 2pm due to a damp pitch. The Demons ultimately won the toss and elected to bat first in a revised 65 overs a side contest. But the visitors could only see out 56 overs before being dismissed for 203. Skipper Michael Giles was typically forthright in his assessment of his side’s and his own individual performance saying: “It probably wasn’t up to scratch, to be honest. “We really should have made more runs, he said. “We’re definitely still in it but we’ll have to take 10 wickets next week to win, especially with the outfield being quite quick. Giles lamented that a host of batsman got starts, but few converted. The skipper’s was the first wicket to fall as Jess Mathers and Anthony Craddock combined to remove him for his 15. Chris O’Hara and Shane Dole then combined for a 60run second wicket stand but O’Hara (38) found himself runout for the third time in four games. Dole (62) kept plugging away for a stoic half-century but struggled to get the better of Mathers’s consistent line and length. Premier’s leading wickettaker finished with the impressive figures of 2/31 from 20 overs and Giles identified him as the clear standout of the Cobras’ attack. Demons big man Scott Clark again showed his handiwork with the willow, chipping in with an invaluable 40 but he was the visitors’ only other batsman to pass 20 as the lower

Shane Dole didn’t have it all his own way against Merinda Park on Saturday but still top-scored for the Demons with a fighting half-century. and middle orders crumbled. Shannon Mathers (4/36) was Merinda Park’s leading wicket-taker, while skipper Jamie Smith finished with 2/73 and Jarrod Armitage 1/49. The Cobras will resume next week on 0/10 after five overs, still needing another 194 runs for victory. Meanwhile, the Maroons are still in with a fighting chance at home against reigning premiers Tooradin, reaching 7/187 (cc) at Upper Beaconsfield Rec Reserve in the only other Round 5 match-up to see day one action. Opener Matt Hutson (69) led the way with an impressive half-century while skipper John Simpson contributed a valuable 28-run cameo. But the Seagulls proved miserly all day, conceding less than 200 despite bowling a full 80 overs and they would still be odds-on favourites heading into the second day’s play. Still, the Maroons at least gave them something to think about in their chase. Tooradin skipper Aaron Avery was the pick of the visiting attack, finishing with the ultra-

economical figures of 2/17 from 15 overs. Bodie Brown (2/44) continued his fine form with the ball while moustachioed stalwart Brenton Adams (1/25) and Steve Hamill (1/33) claimed a wicket apiece. ANOTHER successful tryout series was completed over the weekend, for Gippsland Storm Elite Netball Club. The Storm coaches and committee were very pleased with the talent presented from the eastern metro and greater Gippsland region. There were eight squads selected over the three weeks of selections, with two 13 and under, three 15 and under, two 17 and under squads, and one senior squad. When interviewed, Storm president Brendan Murnane stated that the club were more than happy with the standard of talent of many of the juniors. The coaching staff was now looking forward to the challenge, of improving those skill sets over the next twelve months. Murnane said he would like to thank the parents and family members of the players who attended the tryouts, and would like to encourage players who may have missed out, to work at their skills base and tryout again next year. The president also stated the current Storm squads looked very promising leading up to the finals at the Waverley Netball Centre.

I was elected president of a local football club at the relatively young age of 33, serving in that position for eight years.

Brain Buster

I then went on to serve at president of the local league for another eight years. During my years as league president, my daughter also led the netball competition as president, a position previously held by my wife. I was among a past players group that attracted a string of celebrity guests to an annual Grand Final Breakfast. I am now known to play the odd game of bowls at a club that also includes several former league best and fairest footballers.

Proton power push By EWAN KENNEDY

Model range

A COMPACT family sedan from Malaysian manufacturer Proton, the Preve, comes downunder in two variants. The Preve GX five-speed manual and Preve GX sixspeed continuously variable automatic. Upmarket features include LED projector headlights and daytime running lights. This is a good sized car and Preve has generous leg, head and shoulder room for four adult occupants. It can carry up to five if those in the rear aren’t over wide. The boot is already a good size and the rear seat has a 60-40 split. There are hooks throughout and are ideal for clothing, bags and packages. The top of the dash panel is made of a soft touch nonreflective material. The tilt adjustable, multifunction steering wheel carries controls for the audio and Bluetooth systems as well as mobile phone.

GX 1.6-litre four-door sedan: $15,990 (manual), $17,990 (CVT automatic).

The audio system, with Preve’s front wheels. The ride and handling

of the Preve are what you would expect from a vehicle with some Lotus input - better than average for its class. But the Preve leans in the direction of safety and comfort and is far from being a sporting model. The engine is on the dead side, which hardly comes as a surprise for its modest maximum output of 80 kilowatts, and has to be kept on song by good use of the transmission to get reasonable performance. Sparse cabin insulation lets in a harsh engine note. The gearshift is on the rubbery side - but when it is allowed to shift at its preferred pace it isn’t too bad. The manual version we tested for the full week had petrol consumption that sat around five to seven litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway and in easy country driving. The bargain prices only apply until the end of 2013.
