THE day was finally here, after terms of hard work, St Brigid’s story was about to be performed in Wakakirri. Wakakirri is a competition where the school performs a story to an audience. The winning performance goes through to the finals. Years 3 to 6 have worked long and hard for the preparation of the Waka-

kirri performance. They gave up their lunch and play times. In the last few weeks to the performance everyone was becoming nervous. “There were costumes, props and dance moves to prepare, we practiced long and hard and was starting to make a difference,” said Amelia Cimo, one of the earths (main character). Week goes by the book By BONNIE ROWLAND THE week we had all been waiting finally arrived. This year’s Book Week was different to previous ones because it was not about dressing up and looking cool but rather to teach the themes of every story. This ensured that our students had their own idea about each book. Every grade had a different book. For example, Grade 5/6D read The Coat, Grade 3/4M enjoyed Yellow Dress Day and Prep LD studied The Terrible Suitcase. When asked to comment on what they enjoyed most about Book Week, Harry from 3/4M stated: “This year I have enjoyed Book Week because I’ve been included in more activities such as the performance at assembly, and reading to our Grade 1/2 buddies.” While Jemma from 1/2BS said: “I liked the book Yellow Dress Day because the girl wore different dresses on different days and because they looked nice and colourful”. Ethan from Prep LD liked the book, The Terrible Suitcase, “because the girl was a bit mean at the start, and then she got happier at the end. I liked this book because it had a happy ending”. And Jayden from 5/6D thought: “Book Week was a great way to introduce books and their morals to younger kids”. Book Week was a success for all grades at St Brigid’s and we will continue to celebrate this fabulous reading event for many coming years.

A walk on the wild side By ABIGAIL VAN BERGEIJK GRADES 5 and 6 visited the Healesville Sanctuary on 8 August. On arrival, we broke into groups and were given a challenge. We could either explore the sanctuary, attend the birds of prey display or start on the challenge of completing a sheet of questions about wildlife.

After the bird show we gathered at the information centre and were split into Grade 5s and Grade 6s. The Grade 5s went to Luna’s Secret Forest, which Rosie thought “was good and the interactive screens helped to learn more about the Mountain Pygmy Possum and other wildlife”. Lily added: “Yes, I thought it was

really cool how the whiteboard interacted with the children”. Luca said: “It taught you about the Leadbeater’s possum and how it is endangered”. The Year 6s met some Helmeted Honeyeaters, a Mountain Pygmy Possum in hibernation and a snake called Carlton.

Question: Did you enjoy our day at the Sanctuary? Sol, 5/6D: “Yes, I loved it. We have been learning about the Leadbeater’s possum and the Helmeted Honeyeaters. That is why the Year 5s went to Luna’s Secret Forest and the Year 6s went to the Honeyeaters. Overall we had a fantastic time at the Sanctuary.”

FIVE students from St Brigid’s attended an interschool equestrian event at Beaconsfield on 26 September. The competitors were Amy Frazetto, Ruben Capobianco, Arienne Holdsworth-Rose, Grace Clinton and Abigail Van Bergeijk. Competition involved three rounds of show jumping. Amy said she “really enjoyed it” and thought that she had “learnt a lot from the horse event and our team went really well”. Arienne said: “I think it was amazing. I couldn’t think of anything better and I think I went well. Our team came third out of eight teams. We all had an exciting day at this event and were proud to compete for our school.”

EVERY year the Year 6s are involved in a leadership program. This is where the Year 6s pick a leadership team to go in. There is Social Justice and Fairness awareness. We wanted to find out what they did in Social Justice so we asked a member of the group. “We visit the elderly and we raise funds for poverty some of them are the milking goats project and breast cancer,” Harrison Keeling said. “Do you enjoy going to Golden Wattle?” we asked Ella Davidson and Zac. They said: “We loved going to Golden Wattle it’s a great experience to interact with elderly people”. Golden Wattle is where the Social Justice committee go and see the elderly they talk and play games with them and have lots of the fun. Social Justice is fund-raising for the breast cancer foundation by letting us where pink and bringing a gold coin donation on Friday 15 November. Another one of their projects is saving the gorillas; they collected phones for their Colton to give to the zoo to stop forests getting cut down, where the gorillas are living. In fairness awareness we are making a newspaper, we went down the street to ask for sponsors for our newspaper. We are also making the school more comfortable to study in for ex-

Augustus said: “The point I was trying to get across is that we cannot keep on building out but need to build up. I thought this was a good topic to do alongside ‘If I could change the world’ I’m passionate about this topic because eventually we will run out of space on ground, so we will need to build up.” “His speech was innovative and created a good sense of establishment.” said Sam, one of the supporters at the competition. Bonnie said: “The subject of my

LOCAL primary schools in Healesville participated in the Rotary Speech Competition on 28 August. The competition was held at Healesville High School. On the night, the competitors were judged by eye contact, humour, clear voices, subject of text, and timing. Once two minutes had passed, the timekeeper would turn on a yellow light, and if speakers hadn’t finished by three minutes the timekeeper would turn on a red light, which would mean that they had thirty seconds to finish otherwise loose points.

After each contestant had finished their speech, there would be a minute’s silence so that the judges could total the scores. After all of the contestants had spoken the judges would deliberate and add up scores in a separate room. Each of the competitors had a choice of subject and some of them were: ‘If I could change the world’, ‘Someone I admire’, ‘Why we should all watch the Simpsons’ and a few more. On the night everyone performed and wrote a good speech, but at the end of the competition it was the judges you had to appeal to. The representatives from St

POWELLTOWN basked in the glory of its past on Sunday with hundreds of people pouring into the small mill town for the Powelltown Tramway Centenary celebrations. Every public building in the town came alive from the historic Union Church to the public hall, the Anglers’ Club hall and the sawmill. The event was organised by members of the Upper Yarra Historical Society in collaboration with Powelltown community groups and residents Society member and chief organiser Rhonda O’Meara said she needed no more than to count the smiles on people’s faces to know it was a success. There was one smile in particular that was the real yard stick - church custodian Dorothy Cooper. Mrs O’Meara said her fall-back position as organisers were setting up the displays was “Mrs Cooper will be pleased”... and Mrs Cooper didn’t stop smiling all day. Ron Cockshutt was smiling, too, as he caught up with family and friends for the favourite past-time of the day - reminiscing. “What I see, what’s all around us today, you realise how good we had it,” he said. “No hot water system, no electricity, but we lived better than the ones who have to go down to the supermarket every day,” he said. He said the hall was the hub of the town and pointed up to the little square windows at the back of the building that are out of reach now, but were where the old John Wayne movies streamed magically down onto the stage. “We were in this hall every night of the week with the Boys Club doing one thing or another.”

Dogs off the leash By KATH GANNAWAY DOGS could be ‘officially’ allowed off-leash in Coronation Park in Healesville and Margaret Lewis Reserve in Coldstream under a revision of Yarra Ranges Council’s controls on dogs and cats. Yarra Ranges residents will be asked for their views on proposed areas where dogs and cats are prohibited, where dogs can be exercised on or off a lead and on cat confinement controls that would either require cat owners to keep their cats within their property only at night, or 24/7 - or not at all. When the council adopted the plan in September it agreed to review its current dog off-lead areas, rules for dogs on lead and areas where dogs and cats were prohib-

ited. It will decide whether to reinstate the cat curfew that was in place in the former Animal Control Local Law. The council voted on Tuesday to invite public submissions online allowing at least 42 days after which it will consider the submission and make a decision. Some of the issues identified in calling for a review included the need for a definition for ‘leash’ and ‘effective control’ and that locations of off-leash and prohibited areas are not readily available. In relation to existing off-leash areas the report by the council’s Planning, Building and Health Department said there were not enough leash areas, some were too small and it was not clear where they started and finished.

Confinement of cats is more complex, and potentially controversial. While councillors heard that the council currently has no controls that require cat owners to confine their cats to their own property either day or night, apart from in certain locations such as parks and reserves, the report states there had been no obvious changes in the behaviours of cat owners. The council was presented with ‘pros and cons’ of the overnight and 24-hour control which are also available to inform submissions by the public. Councillor Samantha Dunn moved the motion to invite public submissions saying it was an important issue that she was sure would attract a lot of attention.

She said the cat curfew that had been in place had been enormously successful. “What this motion seeks to do is give the community a couple of options in what they would like to see as the most appropriate confinement,� she said. Mayor Fiona McAllister said the council wanted to hear not only what people think about the issues but encouraged the public to nominate their favourite places to exercise their dogs. Residents can view maps of proposed dog off-lead areas and options for cat curfews online as well as nominating their favourite areas at www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/catsanddogs.

Birthday banks on future strength By KATH GANNAWAY WOORI Yallock Community Bank’s 10th birthday dinner and AGM was a night of announcements and recognition. Shareholders joined bank directors and staff at the Woori Yallock Primary School hall to mark 10 years in which $900,000 has been returned to the community in sponsorship and grants, deposits have reached $90 million and shareholders were told to expect a 14 cent dividend. Chairman Rick Shaw reflected on the phone call that led to the establishment of WYDCOM Financial Services Pty. Ltd. Which opened the community-owned branch of Bendigo Bank in 2004. The call was four years earlier from the late Ian De La Rue who was instrumental in establishing the Warburton Community Bank.

He said he just wanted to bounce something off me... “would you like to become a director of a bank� and it turned out to be something we could own ourselves and something we could all get the benefit from,� Mr Shaw said. “It’s been a hard ride some of the time, a fantastic ride all of the time,� he said adding that what had been achieved in 10 years was to give Woori Yallock town and the district a future. Bendigo Bank regional manager Mark Nolan made a number of presentations including 10-year service certificates to directors Mr Shaw, Ray Gregson, Lisa Kennedy and Rob Thompson and branch manager Rick Tolsher, and thanked directors and staff for their commitment. He made a special presentation to Mr Shaw who announced he was standing down as chairman.

SOME $244,000 will be spent on making the Warburton Highway at Seville safer, but the onus will always remain with drivers to cut a toll that has seen six lives lost in the past 15 years. And there will need to be more money spent in the future on a road that is becoming increasingly congested. The funding is part of a $1 million package announced in October for upgrading the highway at Lilydale and Seville, and an earlier announcement of $3.2 million for works in Launching Place. Seville resident Helen Dunn’s petition for work to be done on the highway at the notorious Russell Road corner in Seville and at Launching Place where lives have also been lost, brought results after eight years of campaigning. Ms Dunn said it had taken a team

approach with residents, businesspeople, VicRoads, government representatives and local emergency services working together. A total of $244,000 of the $1 million will be spent on the Seville corner with the proposed works - adjusting the slope of the road on the corner and repainting lines - aimed at helping reduce run-off-road incidents on that section of road. “We’re very pleased that everyone has listened and that we have some money for the short to mid-term strategy that was in the petition, but in the longer term a lot more work needs to be done,� Ms Dunn said. “Police, the politicians, VicRoads and our local emergency services - I had tremendous back-up from them all, and also from the people I spoke to in the six weeks we campaigned with the petition. “I met a lot of people and made a lot of friends,� she said, adding it

POLICE are appealing for information after an auto shop was broken into and ransacked last week. Between 6pm on Tuesday 12 November and 2.30am Wednesday 13 November, unknown people broke into the factory area at Yarra Ranges Bodyworks in Yarra Junction and trashed the area. THE release last week of the Betrayal of Trust report has been described as historic and far-reaching by Healesville campaigners against sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church. The State Government Inquiry Into The Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Organisations delivered its findings to the Victorian Parliament on Wednesday 13 November, making 15 recommendations. Principal among them is a recommendation for a new law making failing to report serious child abuse, or concealing it, a criminal offence. Former St Brigid’s Catholic School teacher Pam Krstic and parent Ian Lawther were among reform advocates, victims and their families, who attended the Rally of Hope on the steps of Parliament following the release by inquiry chairwoman Georgie Crozier MP. Fr David Daniel and Fr Paul Pavlou, who served respectively from 1990 to 1994 and 2005 to 2007, were each convicted of sex offences against children in Healesville and put on the sex offenders’ register. Both convictions came from police action initiated by victims outside of the Catholic Church’s investigations. The inquiry found that the majority of evidence received, about 80 per cent, related to the criminal abuse of children within the Catholic Church and, among other findings, that it trivialised the problem, contributed to abuse not being disclosed and ensured

Anti-loggers face their day in court By JESSE GRAHAM MEMBERS of a Toolangi antilogging group will front court on Thursday to answer charges of trespassing and disrupting logging work last year. Eight members of the Knitting Nannas of Toolangi (KNOT) will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 21 November at 10am. The group received summons earlier this year for the hearing, which was originally scheduled for Seymour Magistrates’ Court on 31 October. Charges were filed by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI), which claims that the group entered a logging coupe illegally on 19 September 2012. The charge reads that unauthorised activity in a public safety zone is contrary to the Safety on Public Land Act 2004. A KNOT representative said the group had entered the South End logging coupe near Toolangi on 19 September 2012 as part of the group’s protest

A total of $475,000 has been allocated for the playground $100,000 from the state government and $375,000 from Yarra Ranges Council - putting it in the ‘major playground’ league. Chandler Ward councillor Jason Callanan said when built the playground would complement the Seville Water Play facility which he said was already popular with families throughout the region, but did not integrate as well as it could into the adjoining recreation reserve. The playground was identified as a priority project in the Seville Recreation Reserve Master Plan, which was devel-

oped through extensive community consultation involving a range of user groups and the broader Seville Community. Cr Callanan said the playground would feature a wide range of all-access equipment, new shade structures, an electric barbecue, garden beds, shade trees, a drinking fountain, picnic tables and benches and new all-weather footpaths. “Playground equipment will cater not just for younger children, but also older children and teenagers through construction of a new half-court basketball facility,” Cr Callanan said. Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe announced the $100,000 contribution from the government’s Community Facility Funding Program last week saying building healthy and active commu-

nities was a key objective of the Napthine Government. “To achieve this we need to make sure our young people are encouraged to be more active, more often,” Ms Fyffe said. “I congratulate Yarra Ranges Council for securing this funding and the work they are doing right across the shire,” she said. Cr Callanan said the playground would help transform Seville Recreation Reserve into a destination for visitors throughout the year, not just during summer when the water play facility is open. “The local community is looking forward to the development of this project which will attract more people to the town, and we thank the State Government for its generous funding support,” he said.

Mr Paxton said that Mr Christie’s claims were “vexatious and unsubstantiated” and that council would be preparing a submission for VCAT on the matter. “As with all costs arguments, council must make its own submissions as to why costs should not be awarded, and has engaged Maddocks Lawyers to prepare a submission to VCAT outlining why council should not have to pay these costs,” he said. “Given Mr Christie has not withdrawn his claim, council will continue its work to appeal these costs through VCAT.”

YARRA Ranges Council has slammed a legal claim against it as “vexatious and unsubstantiated.” Council lawyers have vowed to fight the cost claim, totalling around $30,000, as having “no basis in fact or law” in a letter to the applicant last week, demanding its withdrawal. Healesville’s Fluid Lounge owner Garry Christie lodged a claim against the council earlier this month, after extending his patronage limit to 150 and opening hours to 3am on six occasions over summer. His Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) appeal saw council conditions on his permit dropped, but Mr Christie was not able to extend his opening hours to 5am, nor

his patronage limit to 300. Mr Christie’s argument is that the VCAT hearings were unnecessary because he warned the council that conditions on his permit could not be legally upheld. Maddocks Lawyers, acting on behalf of the Yarra Ranges Council, contacted Mr Christie last week and requested that he withdraw his claim for costs, citing them as “hopeless and vexatious”. Opinion Still saving lives IN RESPONSE to the open letter to Nerida James (Mail 29 October) I have been a supporter of Narconon for many years. I have attended Narconon graduations and have seen first hand people reclaim their lives after getting off drugs. I recall in particular a girl who got into drugs at the age of 15 and was lost to the world of drugs for the next 10 years. After trying another program with no success, her parents got her onto the Narconon program. The young woman spoke of her experience at the graduation and her aunt spontaneously stood up and told the Narconon staff “thank you for giving us our girl back”. I do understand concerns about the proposed centre being in a residential area, but there is another factor to take into account which is how much drug and alcohol addiction might already be taking its toll in Warburton. There could be someone living on your street who is using illicit drugs and possibly dealing them to young people in the neighbourhood.

We live in a culture which promotes fear, aided by some media outlets more concerned with controversy than truth. It has never been a secret that Ms James is a doctor of natural medicine. She works alongside medical doctors and has them assess everyone who goes through the Narconon program. To clarify regarding Narconon and Scientology, L Ron Hubbard is the founder of Scientology. He researched and wrote about many subjects. The Narconon program uses his work on drug rehabilitation and that is all. No money is paid to the Scientology church. Community issues of concern can and should be addressed, but let’s keep this in proportion. The Narconon staff want to tackle the drug problem and that is all they want to do. Drug destruction I KNOW little about Narconon, however a couple of things I do know are: 1. Drug addiction is a disease, not a crime, nor a lifestyle choice. 2. There was a drug and alcohol treatment facility in town next to the Warburton Hospital until it was closed down and sold. 3. That there is a drug rehab in East St. Kilda called Windana that is in a residential area. It is walking distance to schools, shops, pub, clubs, Fitzroy Street. It has been there many years and has helped many people. Sadly, drug rehabilitation centres and support groups are not always effective. The percentage of people who relapse and eventually die from their illness is high. Maybe it has something to do with our society. Maybe if our communities were kinder, more compassionate, tolerant, and inclusive and less fearful, people with this disease may feel that life is worth living and not selfdestruct. Disaster dollars AN INTERNATIONAL disaster has left two Healesville residents marvelling at community compassion, with hundreds of dollars handed in for aid. Healesville residents Shane and Emma Brandon had booked plane tickets to assist in the Philippines’ recovery effort after a recent earthquake left the country reeling. However, their plans were delayed when Typhoon Haiyan, the largest storm to hit land in human history, landed, killing thousands and affecting many more.

The pair flew out to the Philippines on Friday 15 November but not before receiving numerous donations from community members who knew of their upcoming trip. Shane said that, by Wednesday 13 November, he had received about $1200 in donations from friends and people in the town. He said the money would go towards solar-chargers for phones, along with rice and food to assist with the aid effort. He thanked all those who donated to either himself or any

aid organisations for their generous contributions and encouraged everyone to donate to the relief effort. “It’s really hard to understand what it’s like unless you go and be there,” he said. “It’s easy to see it on TV, but if you times what you see by 50, then you start to feel what they’re feeling.” There are a number of ways that people can donate to the cause, including to Save the Children at www.savethechildren.org.au, to the Red Cross at www.redcross.org.au or to UNICEF at www.unicef.org.au.

Unsung heroes deser ve respect Opinion by KATH GANNAWAY

IMPORTANT SUMMER SAFETY INFORMATION

AS A community, Healesville is generous in its recognition of its “unsung heroes”. CFA and SES volunteers are the best example. The respect and accolades they receive for putting their lives on the line to help others, and potentially save lives, is undisputedly deserved. But, it’s not the same for everyone. My heroes are three people who for the past eight years have fought for justice for children abused by Catholic priests in Healesville, and laws to protect all children in the future. The handing down of the Betrayal of Trust - Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Non-Government Organisations on Wednesday is vindication of the stand taken by Pam Krstic, Ian Lawther and Lisa against the Catholic Church’s handling of sexual abuse by priests. They are what the Inquiry calls “secondary victims”. Pam was a teacher at St Brigid’s Catholic School when convicted paedophile parish priests David Daniel and later Paul Pavlou offended. Ian and Lisa* are parents of victims. In 2006, frustrated at the stonewalling of the Catholic Church, Pam and Ian founded HEAR (Healesville Education and Awareness Raising) and advocated for education of parents in schools to recognise grooming behaviour. At the same time, they tackled the Catholic Church’s Melbourne Archdiocese’s practices for handling clergy sexual abuse under its flawed Melbourne Response. That role expanded to actively working with and supporting Lisa when, after failed and traumatic dealings with the Catholic Church, she reported Pavlou to police. Each has paid the price of publicly calling the church to account. With a few exceptions, they have been ostracised, and in some cases maligned by a parish in denial. Pam lost her teaching career and all three have had to deal with health, emotional and financial problems that come with the territory when you are David to the Catholic Church’s Goliath. The devastation each has felt over the years at the lack of understanding and support from the parish has been in many ways the hardest thing to accept. For Ian, one of the hardest, was to be told by a parish priest that he was “unChristian”. It’s not just Healesville. There are numerous references in the Betrayal of Trust report of victims be-

ing made to feel their speaking out was damaging to the parish. The committee heard about divisions in communities after disclosures, particularly in religious organisations. One family explained “The Church just closes ranks around itself, but also the Catholic community does in lots of ways. We’ve lost friends ... because we know their children were abused, but they’ve done nothing about it.” In Good Faith & Associates, the victim advocacy group for which Pam has worked for the past three years spoke of “a judgemental and hostile church community”. Ann Ryan from Ballarat said “ ... more than anything, I still wonder at the silence of the Catholic community”. Sandra Clark from Melbourne, the mother of a victim, told the Inquiry that religious communities can be challenged when confronted with the issue of criminal child abuse. “I have been absolutely ostracised in the districts surrounding where I live even now,” she said. It was identified too that there was considerable work to be undertaken by non-government organisations in rebuilding communities and re-establishing trust. The report quoted Pam Krstic as pointing to Canada as a place where examples of restorative justice and models of how parishes can rebuild and regenerate can be found. Many newcomers to St Brigid’s Parish are unaware of the trauma inflicted on the victims and on the parish by David Daniel, Paul Pavlou and by the Catholic Archdiocese. Unpalatable as it is, they need to know. Many do know. And, like Ann Ryan, I’ve wondered, and continue to wonder, at the silence of the Healesville Catholic community. It’s not past history. The maligning continues and the tragedy is that because of it, Healesville is not a safe place for other victims to disclose. Now would be a good time to acknowledge publicly the truth, the pain, and the courage of three people who in my eyes are unsung heroes to whom the entire Healesville community owes a debt of gratitude. Festival grabs a bit of sunshine THE Yarra Valley Spring Festival managed to sneak in on a rare sunny Sunday 10 November, bringing lots of Seville families out to play. The festival run by the Seville Township Group involved local community groups, businesses, CFA and rides and activities for everyone from tots to teens - and older! One festival visitor who, with so much going on, was glad he took time to grab a raffle ticket was Jason Lang from Coldstream.

Jason won a three-minute grocery grab at Seville IGA. The 20-year-old came away on Wednesday night with just over $500 worth of groceries for mum, a huge smile, and congratulations from IGA owner Barry Entwhistle and STG president Trilby Dewhurst. “We were very pleased to be able to offer this wonderful prize to Jason, with thanks to Supa IGASeville and Barry Entwistle for being so generous,” Ms Dewhurst said.

Jason added his thanks to the Seville Township Group and IGA. Ms Dewhurst said the festival overall, while a little wet underfoot, was a great success. “We’re really happy with the way everybody from the community turned out and used it as an opportunity to connect with their neighbours and friends,” she said. Screening to help kids in Africa By JESSE GRAHAM A MOVIE screening for a good cause will take place next Wednesday at the Memo Hall, raising funds for school scholarships in Kenya. The 27 November screening of I am a Girl at the Memo will raise money for the students of St Catherines Primary School and Home in Nairobi, Kenya, to have secondary school scholarships. Yarra Glen resident Esther Rijk has organised the fund-raising event through the Rotary eClub of Greater Melbourne and said the money raised will offer an invaluable helping hand to kids currently living in slums.

“One full scholarship, for four years at a quality boarding school, is roughly $1200,” Ms Rijk said. “It’s so little money when you think about it in the bigger picture. “It’s the biggest thing to bring these countries forward and to break people out of poverty.” Ms Rijk has worked with St Catherines Primary School and Home in 2012 and helped the school to establish its own greenhouse. The greenhouse is being used to promote sustainable and improved diets in the children and allows the school to generate a profit through selling food. However, she said the greenhouse won’t be profitable until

next year and that money raised for scholarships would be able to help children graduating from the school this year, who cannot afford more education. “People born in a slum usually stay in a slum - but if we get them to the city, there are more opportunities and a chance to get somewhere,” she said. I am a Girl is a documentary which reveals the inequality experienced by females growing up in different corners of the globe from Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, Afghanistan, the United States of America and Australia. Ms Rijk said the film, which begins at 7.30pm, is inspiring and ac-

Four fronts for Drugs, driving a deadly mix police blitz plan By JESSE GRAHAM

By JESSE GRAHAM POLICE will be taking a fourpronged approach to making roads safer over summer, with a series of operations tackling risky road behaviour. The Summer Stay road enforcement campaign kicked off last week the introduction of Victoria Police’s Operation Remove All Impaired Drivers (RAID). Operation RAID, which targets drink and drug affected drivers, will run across the state until 8 December, where it will be followed by Operation Break Up. Operation Break Up has a focus on addressing driver distractions, such as mobile phone use, and seatbelt offences in the lead up to Christmas and will run in Victoria from 9-23 December.

High-risk behaviours such as speeding will be cracked down on during Operation Crossroads, which is a nationwide operation which will run from 23 December to 3 January. During Operation Crossroads, police will focus on high risk factors that are usually associated with holiday driving and will be followed by Operation Fresh Start on 4-5 January. This operation specifically addresses driver fatigue with the return of workers from their holiday break and Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing Command, Robert Hill, said every driver needs to focus on road safety. “Although we currently have the lowest road toll on record, we can’t become complacent,” he said. “This is why we will have police saturating the roads and

concentrating on those behaviours which are known to contribute to road trauma.” Assistant Commissioner Hill said the festive season was meant to about spending time with family and friends, not visiting loved ones in hospital and arranging funerals. “But, unfortunately for some, this will be a reality,” he said. “This is not a reality that I’m willing to accept and that’s why Victoria Police is doing everything we can to combat road trauma this summer. “Expect to have your car scanned and photographed, expect to be breath-tested and drug-tested and know that if you are doing the wrong thing on the roads you will be caught.”

IMPAIRED drivers will be in the crosshairs over the coming weeks, as police focus on keeping alcohol and drug affected drivers off the roads. Operation Remove All Impaired Drivers (RAID) is part of the first phase of Victoria Police’s Summer Stay road enforcement campaign, which will see an increase in booze buses and drug testing. Road Policing Command Superintendent Neville Taylor said that motorists should expect to be tested, with more mobile breath-testing facilities being located on back roads. “Police will be out in force across the state, focused on those drivers who have a complete disregard for not only their own lives, but also the lives of others,” he said. Superintendent Taylor said that drivers who drink or take drugs significantly increase their chances of being involved in a crash and should be removed from the roads. “We will be placing our

for subsequent offences. Drug-driving offences can range from a $433 fine and a three-month licence suspension, through to heavier fines, a minimum six-month licence cancellation and court convictions for subsequent offences. Learner permit holders and probationary drivers must maintain a zero blood alcohol content level at all times. Operation RAID will run from 15 November through to 8 December.

Shining smiles a success POWELLTOWN celebrated on Sunday with hundreds of people pouring into the small mill town for the Powelltown Tramway Centenary celebrations. The event was organised by members of the Upper Yarra Historical Society in collaboration with Powelltown community groups and residents, and, UYHS member and chief organiser Rhonda O’Meara said she needed no more

than to count the smiles on people’s faces to know it was a success. The celebrations started at Yarra Junction Museum and continued on along the old tramway route - or there abouts - culminating in a celebration where reminiscing was the main activity along with displays of photographs and other memorabilia, games, demonstrations of pioneer skills and tours.

Show on the go impresses By MELISSA MEEHAN THE sun was shining as thousands made their way to the Lilydale Showgrounds over the weekend. Crowds from across the state visited the 60th Lilydale Agricultural and Horticultural Show Society event that focused on agriculture, family fun and the rural lifestyle. Keeping true to its roots, the show still keeps the traditional agricultural show ‘where the city meets the country’ theme.

The Melba Park precinct was a flurry of excitement, with free activities and entertainment lapped up by excited families. Some cuddled a large variety of furry and feathered friends, others visited the animal nursery, and some daredevils even patted a snake at the reptile show. The Lilydale Show wouldn’t be complete without a woodchop event, fast and furious - and it did not disappoint.

Teams tr y to stay in touch THE battle between bat and ball replaced the battle between man and the elements. On Saturday as action in the Yarra Valley’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, produced some intriguing contests between the batsmen and bowlers. At Wesburn, Hoddles Creek hosted Woori Yallock in a clash between two sides that were desperate to remain in touch with the top teams. Woori Yallock opened up proceedings with the bat and found things tough against a Wombats attack brimming with confidence after dismantling Coldstream last week. Inform speedster Nick Bark (3/29) made early inroads into the Tigers lineup and had the visitors struggling. Talented pairing Ryan Smith and Simon Young came together and began the task of rebuilding the innings with patience and skill. Unfortunately when Young was dismissed for 35, Smith (51no) was left to scratch around with the tail. Experienced Wombat Michael Batten (3/11) used his disciplined lines and lengths to polish off the tail to see the Tigers all out for 160 in the shadows of stumps. This game is well and truly in the balance as the target seems well within reach of the Wombats, however the Tiger’s possess enough firepower to feel confident of taking out the points. Another game well in the balance is the battle between the top four sides. The Burras batted first and, against some disciplined bowling from the Bloods, had to work extremely hard for their runs. For the second game in a row, Liam Barnard (52) showed his experience and leadership, and when he was joined by Mick Walker (27) the pair looked as if they would carry the home side to a significant total. However when they fell, the rest of the Burra’s bats made contributions, but not enough to boost the score beyond 200. The Bloods were well led by the in-form Dylan Moore whose figures of 4/12 ensured the Burras were kept in check and dismissed for 179. Like the Hoddles Creek versus Woori Yallock clash, this games a real flip of the coin prediction. Coldstream hosted Mount Evelyn in a key clash between two of the competition’s best teams. Coldstream elected to bat and against some tight opening bowling from Reese Shepherd (2/16) and Kane Jones (3/11) lost a couple of early

wicket to be immediately on the back foot. Croydon recruit Lewis Ashton (23) was joined by the cool headed Bailey Fritsch (24), and the pair put the Crocs in a strong position leading into the tea interval with some impressive stroke play and patient decision making. At tea the Crocs sat at 3/73 and looked poised to push to a defendable total. The Rovers put pay to that with a glut of wickets upon resumption, courtesy of Gareth Fraser (2/28) and Kane Jones, reducing the Crocs to 7/80 and looking for a quick kill. David Brambilla (20) helped the tail wag somewhat, however at 9/121, the Crocs decided to declare in search of quick wickets in the last 30 minutes of play. Although the Rovers did indeed lose a wicket, they stood firm to reach stumps at 1/33 and a strong hold on the contest. The Crocs have the firepower to shake things up, but would need immediate wickets to get the ball rolling. In the final game of DJ Strachan Shield, Seville hosted Yarra Junction in search of some much needed form. The home side won the toss and duly elected to bat in great conditions. Early on, it was an intriguing battle between bat and ball as neither side could take full control of the contest. Consistent bowling from David Lever (6/54) ensured things were kept in check for the Eagles while Adam Burns showed he is more than a brutal hitter with a well-made 75. Experienced pair Dean Troyhan (35) and Matt Tilney (26) powered the Blues home with some heavy hitting to see their side finish on 235. The Eagles have some talented batsmen but one would think they would struggle to muster enough talent to chase down the score against a formidable Seville attack. Cricket’s the winner GIRLS from around the Yarra Valley showed they are just as keen as the boys when it comes to cricket on Friday night. They defied the rain to take part in the Yarra Valley’s Female Festival of Cricket hosted by Cricket Victoria and the Yarra Valley Cricket Association. The festival gave girls of all ages a chance to try a sport that has a growing female profile at the elite level, and to barrack for the Yarra Valley Stars who took on Ringwood Rams in a competition opener under lights. The presence of some of Cricket Victoria’s top officials gave the Stars and the Rams an extra reason to take to the pitch, and to shine, despite the rain. Outer East Regional cricket Manager Jarrod Leggett said female involvement in cricket was not new, but was definitely something that is developing with marketing and investment from Cricket Victoria greatly increased over the past decade. The social connection, making new friends and learning new skills in a game that has traditionally been a male domain, is all part of the attraction of cricket for the girls. Mr Leggett said really positive role models were coming through the ranks with players such as top Australian batswoman Meg Lanning. On a local level, Ringwood player Jess Adams, 14, took out the RDCA bowling average and won the Outer-East Junior Leader Award in open competition - the first female to earn the award. Mr Leggett said a lot of talented girl cricketers play in the open competition until they are 15 or 16 when they can make the move to premier girls’ cricket. “We have really good examples of where opportunities for boys and girls are now aligning,” Mr Leggett said.
