Wish for a smile By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO
Hair stylist Dee Parker-Attwood with Callee and Debbie Petropoulos. Picture: SUPPLIED Last year Callee enjoyed one of her finest moments when she graduated from special school and she now attends an adult day centre where she undertakes literacy and numeracy programs and art courses. “Callee is a very happy girl, a very cheeky girl. She is just happy all the time.” However this year the close-knit family once again received shattering news when Jim was diagnosed with non hodgkin’s lymphoma for the second time. He is undergoing treatment and is trialling an innovating drug treatment that the family hopes will help him recover. And that is why both Debbie and Callee were overjoyed when they received the news that, not only were they going to enjoy a day of pampering together, but the family will soon enjoy a trip to Queensland. “It was just beautiful... the staff were amazing and fussing over us. “I just kept looking at Callee and the smile on her face... she just kept looking at me smiling.”

A CAROLINE Springs teenager’s smile will be a little brighter this Christmas after she received some much-deserved pampering in the lead-up to the festive season. Callee Petropoulos, 19, and her adoring mother Debbie were recently treated to an indulgent makeover fit for a princess at Wieselmann of Toorak thanks to Make-A-Wish Australia. Callee suffers from aicardi syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that is believed to only affect girls and is characterised by the partial or complete absence of a key structure in the brain, called the corpus callosum, the presence of retinal abnormalities, and seizures. Her parents Debbie and Jim received the devastating news when she was only one after she was admitted into hospital with what they thought was the flu. Debbie told Star a doctor saw little Callee sitting up in her cot and immediately realised something was wrong. “We just thought Callee was developing slowly,” she said. “A doctor was walking past and took one look at her and saw a turn in her eye... she had an MRI and we got the devastating news that she was missing the part of her brain that divides the left and right side.” The couple were told their daughter would never walk or talk and would probably only live to the age of 13. Nineteen years on and the Petropoulos family has enjoyed a loving a fulfilling life with Callee and her two older brothers. The teenager surprised everyone when she began walking at four and communicates through her iPad. She attends yearly specialist doctor appointments and takes medications.

THERE will be minor changes to waste collection days over the upcoming Christmas holiday period throughout the City of Melton. Mayor Bob Turner said during the week of Christmas, collections that usually occur on Wednesday through to Friday will take place one day later. There will be no garbage, green waste or recycling collec-
tions on Christmas Day. “It’s a good idea to take note of the days on which the collections are altered because Christmas can be a time when we accumulate more waste than usual,” Cr Turner said. “With an increase of waste and recyclable material during the festive season residents are encouraged to make use of the yellow top recycle bins,
by recycling all cartons, cans, bottles, magazines, newspapers, Christmas wrapping and cards.” For more information on the changes call the council on 9747 7200 or visit www. melton.vic.gov.au The Melton Recycling Facility at Ferris Rd, Melton will be closed on Wednesday, 25 December and Wednesday, 1 January 2014.

Angela Rojas recently purchased a Sanctum Apartment in Taylors Hill and said it offers Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI the ideal lifestyle for the busy business woman.112017
Living in the West is best By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO WHEN Angela Rojas decided to take her first leap into the property market, she immediately looked to Melbourne’s West. An organisational consultant and trainer, Ms Rojas enjoys a busy lifestyle and has spent the past decade renting in Essendon and relishing the benefits of living close to the city. However soon after she began looking for her first property, the 40-year-old realised the market was tough and properties in her price range did not have the facilities her hectic lifestyle required. After months of looking, Ms Rojas finally found the apart-
ment of her dreams in Sanctum Apartments, Taylors Hill, and said it is the best decision she has ever made. “For what I get in in Taylors Hill, I would probably get a quarter of that in a suburb like Essendon or Footscray,” she said. “I looked at Footscray, my friend bought an apartment there and it’s tiny. We both paid around the same price. “There is no way you can get into an apartment complex with a gym and a pool, two bedrooms, two balconies and a car park for the price that I paid in Taylors Hill.” Ms Rojas said her ties with the West were one of the main factors in her decision to pur-
chase an apartment in Taylors Hill. With family in Keilor and East Keilor, she wanted to remain close to her parents and siblings. Sanctum Apartment developer Tony Culina said Ms Rojas was typical of many of the buyers in the development. “As we had initially expected, there has been a great deal of interest from people with links to the area, particularly those who had grown up in the North West and have ties to the area,” Mr Culina said. She said other priorities when buying were proximity to the airport, value for money and security.
Firey is learning to lead By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO A TOOLERN Vale CFA brigade member has been hand-picked to join 20 volunteer leaders from around Victoria who will work closely with CFA chief officer Euan Ferguson as part of a year-long leadership program. Craig Dunshea, Toolern Vale Fire Brigade captain, will take part in the Chief Officer’s Leadership Development Program, which he has described as a “life-changing” experience and a chance to not only become a better leader but a better person. The program began last month and Mr Dunshea said the lessons he had already learned could be applied to both work and family life. “The chief gave us real practical insight into how we can learn from history and not make the same mistakes again. There are 2000-year-old Chinese principles that can still be applied,” he said. “I was quite impressed by the way he shared his life experiences with us - that someone so high up the tree had the time to sit down with us and share his insights.” Mr Ferguson said the program, which emphasised reflection and discussion, was about building up a network of current and future leaders who were confident not only as a leader of a team, but in themselves as people. “By understanding our values we can lead ethically and with forethought, respect and humility,” the CFA chief officer said. The program consists of three scheduled weekend sessions interspersed with take-home study missions and allows participants to track their development over the course of a year. However Mr Dunshea has no plans for the top job - just yet. “I joked with the chief that one of my goals for the program was to take his job - but no, there are too many meetings involved.”

Thieves target estate
Friends fight aged care closure
By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO
By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO
A PLUMPTON housing estate was the target of thieves earlier this month. The offenders stole a toilet and fittings at a home under construction in Aspire Estate on December 4 and were disturbed shortly afterwards during an unsuccessful attempt to enter a nearby home which was also under construction. On 7 and 8 December a burglary occurred at the recycling facility in Ferris Rd, Melton. Police have
described the incident as a professional burglary as the offenders arrived with tools which enabled them break in to locked cabinets and drawers. They spent considerable time on the premises and stole cash. Meanwhile, on Saturday 7 December, offenders forced open the front door of the Coles Store on Gourlay Rd, Caroline Springs, and gained access to the locked cigarette cabinet. All of the items had been removed from the cabinet by staff members but the thieves managed
to steal a number of mobile phones. Between 7.30am and 7pm on 9 December offenders broke into a property on Peter Pan Crescent, Kurunjang. Jewellery and gaming consoles were stolen. Neighbours saw a small black hatchback vehicle at the premises during the afternoon. Police would like to hear from anyone who has information in relation to that vehicle or the burglary. And between 11am Saturday, 7 December and 1.30pm Sunday, 8 December offenders entered the rear
yard of a residence in Strutt Place, Caroline Springs. They stole a trailer containing a jet ski which they pushed out onto the road and then towed away. Police said the jet ski was a Sea Doo brand, custom painted with a bright red front, white hull and a black and red seat. The trailer is made from galvanised iron, has a jerry can holder and rope winch. Any person with information about this incident or items should contact Melton CIU on 9747 7999.
Puppy love is a Christmas priority By ALESHA CAPONE
1112421-LN51-13
TO HELP all creatures great and small have the pawfect – or purrfect – Christmas requires some compassion and common sense from their human counterparts. St Albans resident Liliana Iuri, who founded the Pet Neighbourhood Watch Action Group, said the number of unwanted pets dumped in Brimbank and Melton after the festive season had become an annual tragedy. Ms Iuri said across the past five years, she had noticed the number of dumped and stray animals increasing in the West. “According to RSPCA information, there is an increase in unwanted animals at this time of year,” she said. She has encouraged anyone thinking of buying a dog, cat, rabbit or bird for Christmas to put plenty of thought into the decision. “I would actually advocate not to purchase a pet, but probably go to the animal welfare agencies and adopt a pet,” Ms Iuri said. “Visit, buy the food and gear your lifestyle towards the welfare of the animal. I think people should do it very gradually. “Having a pet in the home takes an enormous time commitment, emotional commitment and can restrict your freedom in situations such as when going on holiday - you need to consider the animal’s needs.” Ms Iuri has also encouraged pet owners to ensure their animals are microchipped, desexed and kept within an enclosed yard or indoors. She said unusual breeds or cute creatures could be stolen – or simply taken in by strangers – if permitted to roam at large. “I would actually say no to letting them go in the street or run free,” Ms Iuri said. The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) has also advised Victorians to be careful about the kind of food they dish up to pets during Christmas. Dr David Neck from the AVA said foods which could be dangerous, or even toxic, to dogs and cats included chocolate, nutmeg, avocados, onion, garlic, turkey skin, pork crackling, sausages, fatty meats, grapes and raisins, macadamia nuts, dairy products, raw eggs, mushrooms, raw fish, citrus fruit, green pota- Ruth Gatt with her cat Oscar, who was adopted from the Lost Dog’s Home in North Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI Melbourne. 111851 toes and large quantities of tomatoes or salt.
A GROUP of angry City of Melton residents has taken their fight over the closure of Reg Geary House to the State Government. Members of Friends of Reg Geary House presented a petition, signed by almost 700 residents, to shadow health minister Jenny Mikakos at Parliament House last week as Health Minister David Davis was unavailable to accept the document. The petition calls on the Napthine Government to stop the privatisation and closure of the aged care facility in June next year. Western Health announced in October that it will be closing Reg Geary House as the ageing building no longer meets the needs of residents. When announcing the closure, a spokesperson for Western Health said the changes were a result of the very small size of the service, with only 30 beds. FRGH chairperson Dirk Sauer said the committee was determined to stop the closure of the facility. “We are at a loss to understand why the government is allowing Western Health to close such an important and well respected and run community aged care health facility,” Mr Sauer said. “The community are dismayed at this regressive action especially given Reg Geary’s excellent reputation and Melton’s rapid growth.” In October Melton mayor Bob Turner said the council was concerned with the situation. “We are disappointed that Western Health has made the decision to close Reg Geary House as it provides a valuable service to members of our community. However, we understand why Western Health has made this decision,” Cr Turner said. “Council calls on the State and Federal health ministers to take appropriate action to address the extreme shortage of nursing home beds within the West and in particular Melton. The closure also places pressure on employment opportunities locally.” There are currently five aged care facilities, including Reg Geary House, operating within the City of Melton, with very limited vacancies.
Safe Christmas POLICE have urged Brimbank and Melton residents to stay safe as the Christmas season gets underway. The area’s crime prevention officer, Leading Senior Constable Matt Mudie, has appealed for motorists to stay safe on the roads. “For many readers and their families this time of the year will also mean a much-deserved holiday from work and/or school commitments,” he said. “If you are planning on driving anywhere over this holiday period, please ensure you take care and consider all road users. “Prior to leaving home, consider planning your trip that will give you adequate breaks and allow time for unexpected delays. “Our state’s current road toll is at an all-time low and it is the responsibility of the whole community for it to remain this way. To report suspicious behaviour please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Carlie’s on the rise By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO A BACCHUS Marsh baker is filling this festive season with an array of delectable sugary delights that are sure to please even the fussiest sweet tooth. Only a few years ago Carlie Taylor spent her days like most other mums – busy with entertaining her children and juggling a household. She was also a keen baker and always received countless requests to make cupcakes for family birthdays and functions. It wasn’t until last year that she decided to take her cooking to the next level and opened CJ Sweet Treats – an online cake-making business that has now grown into Carlie’s full time job. “I was looking for a job that worked around the kids’ school hours ... now it

has gone from muffins and cupcakes to wedding cakes,” she told Star. “I used to pay people to make my children’s birthday cakes but then I thought I would do it myself and it just started from there.” Carlie said in the lead-up to Christmas she has been inundated with clients requesting unique gifts for teachers and family hampers – but it is the joy of making a wedding cake that is her favourite thing to do.
“For my first wedding I was so nervous ... but now I find it relaxing and I love seeing how beautiful they look.” She said vintage is the all the rage now for brides-to-be with lace and pretty sugared roses a popular accent to many wedding cakes. The talented baker said the business has grown so rapidly that she is already booked out until April – just proving that you can “have your cake and eat it too”.

A NEW enclosed shooting range at the Melton Pistol Club was opened last week by mayor Bob Turner. Melton City Council delivered the project to reduce noise issues and to improve safety in the area. Cr Turner said the council was proud to support a wide range of recreational activities within the City of Melton. “Council is committed to providing high-quality infrastructure for our community,” he said. “The construction of the enclosed shooting range is a significant upgrade to the facility and is the first of its kind in Australia.” The Melton Pistol Club has been operating for 35 years and provides recreation and social opportunities for residents as well as training and development for Victoria Police and staff from nearby remand centres. The range enclosure has been designed to comply with Environment Protection Authority gunshot noise guidelines. The Melton Pistol Club is located at the end of Clarkes Road in Brookfield.

Police eye break-ups By CHARLENE MACAULAY TAKE care when wrapping up your Christmas shopping – Victoria Police will be on the roads and watching. Victoria Police has rolled out Operation Break Up across the state, which is targeting the fatal five road user behaviours which are known causes of road trauma. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said the community could expect to see police at all major shopping hubs and anywhere else where there will be an influx of cars, pedestrians and cyclists. Asst Comm Hill said police would be placing particular focus on driver distraction and seatbelts as we head into the festive season. “Police will be in the CBD, on the roads around major shopping centres and patrolling the local shopping strips to make sure all road users do the right things in these areas,” he said.
“We know this time of the year can be really hectic and people have a lot of things on their minds. “But it’s also a time where we have a lot of our most vulnerable road users, both young and old, on the roads. “That makes it even more important to ensure all drivers remain vigilant and take extra care. “If you receive a ticket for using your mobile phone while you are driving, get booked for not wearing a seatbelt or you’re penalised for not crossing the roads correctly, I make no apologies. “That ticket may just be the reminder or the intervention needed to prevent someone being seriously injured or killed in a collision. “I urge all road users to turn off the distractions and switch on when you are out on the roads.” Operation Break Up, which will run until 23 December, is the second operation of the Summer Stay road enforcement campaign.
Red-hot on arsonists By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO WITH the onset of summer Melton City Council is encouraging residents to report any suspicious behaviour in a bid to detect and catch would-be arsonists. The council and Victoria Police are working together as part of the Victoria Police - Bushfire Arson
Prevention Campaign 2013-’14. Operation Firesetter which forms part of the campaign is a major priority for police but the council is also calling on residents to do their part. The community is being asked to report any suspicious behaviour to police by calling triple zero immediately and call 1800 333 000.
Sunshine resident Ayuen Autiak, left, has won two categories at the Victorian African Community Awards. Her community work has included organising a fashion show in which her Melton friend Abuk Ajeng, right, modelled a traditional outfit. 111842 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI
Quiet achiever wins African award By ALESHA CAPONE A QUIET achiever from Sunshine has been recognised at the Victorian African Community Awards 2013. Ayuen Autiak received two awards at the VACA ceremony in Richmond. Ms Autiak was presented with the Quiet Achiever award and the VACA prize for Best Project. She was nominated for the category after organising a South Sudanese fashion show attended by more than 500 people in Sunshine last month.
Ms Autiak said the cultural attire featured in the fashion show was traditionally worn to special events like weddings and parties. The winning outfit at the parade was designed by Sunshine tailor Bori Akechak and modelled by Melton resident Abuk Ajeng. Ms Ajeng said her husband Autiak and children Awet, 13, and Adut, 11, were proud of her achievement. Ms Ajeng said she would like to model for another fashion show in the future. “It’s not hard work, it was fun because everyone liked
it,” she said. Ms Autiak said she was already planning another, bigger fashion show for next year. She said her children Adhel and Adut Aleu have been “very supportive” of the fashion show. “It was very nice that night because everybody’s happy,” Ms Autiak said. She attended the VACA presentation with Monica Majak and Mama Marina who helped her organise the fashion show. Ms Autiak said she felt excited to receive the two
awards at the VACA show, which included a special tribute to Nelson Mandela. “I was very happy, it was wonderful,” she said. “It was the first time for me to hold awards in my life. “It was a blessing to hold them, when there was a celebration of the life of Nelson Mandela, who was the father of Africa.” Ms Autiak also thanked Adieng Manut and Tong Gob who acted as MCs at the fashion show and Gai Deng Niel for organising the pair to do the job.

Thief appeals on jail term By ALESHA CAPONE A MAN who committed more than 50 crimes in locations including the West has appealed his jail sentence. The Supreme Court of Victoria Court of Appeal recently heard Bradley Berry was sentenced to more than four years’ imprisonment during May this year. He was given a non-parole period of two years and six months after committing 58 offences including theft, obtaining property by deception, attempted armed robbery, handling stolen goods and aggravated assault. The offender’s first charge in the crime spree happened in June 2012 when Berry stole a woman’s purse while she was shopping in Hoppers Crossing. Berry went on to steal purses and handbags from people in Altona, Altona Meadows, Caroline Springs, Maribyrnong, Point Cook and Williamstown. Sometimes he was accompanied by a co-accused who would steal the bags while Berry distracted the victim. At one stage, the pair conducted transactions worth more than $3000
with stolen credit cards at Altona, Altona North, Braybrook, Hoppers Crossing, Sydenham, Taylors Lakes and Werribee stores. Berry was finally captured when Westfield Plaza security staff from recognised him and the co-accused on 27 July last year. When the guards followed the duo outside, Berry produced a large hunting knife. Berry ran away towards a sedan driven by a 67-year-old woman and her 70-year-old husband. Berry opened the car’s passenger side door and ordered the woman to drive, but the woman exited the vehicle and her husband pulled on the handbrake to stop the car. Berry jumped out and ran into the front of another car being driven by a woman and made her stop the vehicle. She trapped Berry’s arm in the car’s door frame before he escaped. Justice Paul Coghlan told the court this failed and police later arrested Berry, before taking him to the Geelong Police Station. Judge Coghlan and two other judges did not reduce Berry’s original sentence.
Open hearts for Christmas RESIDENTS across Melton are being encouraged to open up their hearts this Christmas by donating non-perishable food items and toys to be distributed to disadvantaged families. The Melton Visitor Information Centre will be collecting the goods
in the lead-up to Christmas which will then be distributed by Combined Churches Foodbank and the council’s family services unit. Mayor Bob Turner said everyone deserved a helping hand and Christmas was the perfect time to offer families a brighter future.

Seniors come together in West By ALESHA CAPONE A SENIORS group in St Albans has been providing joy and friendship since it began in October 2011. The Indian Seniors Association - West Incorporated meets on the third Saturday between 10.30am-1.30pm at the Errington Community Centre in Princess St. Founding president and grandfather of five, Arjan Tuli, said the group now has around 50 members who
enjoy tea and snacks, yoga classes, word puzzles and board games. “Other times we also play bingo and encourage people to talk to each other,” he said. “It is a friendly senior’s group - the name says Indian but all are welcome.” At the group’s recent annual general meeting, Mr Tuli was asked to continue in his role as president. Vice president Mrs Bharti Singh, treasurer Brij Bhushan
Joshi and secretary Atarjit were also elected. “The reason why we started is that we used to go to another seniors group in Mount Waverly which also has the name of the Indian Seniors Association,” Mr Tuli said. Because many members had to travel to attend the association, Mr Tuli established a regular gathering in the West. “I enjoy working as a volunteer and helping the seniors and the community,” Mr Tuli
said. “It’s great to have an avenue for the seniors to get together and have a social life and get to know each other.” Three months ago, the association received a grant to provide transport to its monthly St Albans sessions who cannot travel on their own. The association is also supported by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs and Brimbank City Council.

During summer, the quietest time on our transport network, essential works will be happening on CityLink, the West Gate Bridge, and suburban and regional rail lines. Summer is also the best time for road maintenance and repair crews will be out across the state, on regional and metropolitan roads, repairing and resealing the Victorian road network. These major improvements are necessary to provide better public transport and better roads for all Victorians. There will be some delays but the works will help create a modern, safe and connected transport network.
Closures and reduced services Road Construction crews will be working over the summer months repairing and upgrading roads across Victoria. Motorists are advised to pay attention to advisory signs and obey reduced speed limits while these works are underway. Last Minute Gift Ideas
Connecting people and communities MELT
A Star Advertising Feature
Quick check for last-minute gifts LAST minute Christmas present shopping can be stressful, but needn’t result in bad choices and unsuitable gifts. Doing the dash at the late night shopping events is becoming common, especially for the time poor and particularly, it seems, for men. Women are more likely to be the planners, putting thought into who they are buying for and what their recipients like.
Inquiries and complaints around unwanted gifts, gift cards, warranties and the like always increase after Christmas. Some good advice is to compare prices with other retail outlets prior to purchasing, to ensure you get a good deal. With all the sales around, many shops are actively competing for business. If you feel a bit unsure about
a gift choice, check the store’s return policy for change of mind. Some larger stores provide a Christmas gift grace period for about two to four weeks after the day, which will also give you confidence to make that purchase. If choosing a gift for children, check the recommended age group the toy is suitable for, and make sure the
child is of age. Asking a friend or family member for advice is also a good idea, for hard to buy for people. Maybe they might have a better idea what the person’s interests are. This is also a good idea for
work office KK presents. If you don’t know the person well and you still need a gift idea flowers, housewares, edible gifts and jewellery are pretty safe bets for girls. Gifts for guys could include wine, cologne, games or small gadgets.
Finally, keep receipts for refund and warranty purposes, just in case. Store them all together in a box or envelope labelled ‘Christmas Gifts’ so they are easy to locate. Finally, enjoy the festive season and opening all those presents!

Science takes a look ahead THINK Ahead, a major new long-term exhibition looks at the possibilities for life in the future through innovations in science, technology, engineering and design. “Think Ahead will completely change the way people experience Scienceworks,” said Scienceworks manager Dr Nurin Veis. “Targeted at eight to 12-year-olds, it’s technologically advanced and thought-provoking.” Developed by Museum Victoria, Think Ahead encourages visitors to think about the future and their involvement in it through topics including medicine and health, cities, the environment, space, music and communication. The exhibition includes the opportunity for visitors to: - Redesign their bodies using cybernetics; - Design their own 3D future city with vertical gardens and flying car factories; - Step inside an immersive space craft experience; - Influence others’ emotions through creating different soundscapes. Think Ahead features world-class innovations from Melbourne, including the Cochlear implant and bionic eye prototype and the two-wheeled electric Holden EN-V, a concept car of the future that can drive its passengers safely to their destination. Robots are a special feature of the exhibition. On public display in Australia for the first time will be two Nao (pronounced “now”) robots - advanced humanoids that will walk, talk, remember faces, dance and play games with visitors, and the Da Vinci Surgical Robot that has been used in more than 200,000 surgeries. “This new experience is totally unique to Scienceworks. “We’ve integrated immersive multimedia technology with hands-on physical interactions, rare artefacts and the work of local innovators,” says senior curator Kate Phillips. “Think Ahead showcases timelines of development across key areas of 20th and 21st century innovations and asks the question: What’s next?” Combining 200 objects from Museum Victoria’s collection and more than 30 items from the wider science and technological community, Think Ahead is the first new permanent exhibition for Scienceworks in seven years. Scienceworks is open daily at 2 Booker St, Spotswood. Pre-purchasing tickets is highly recommended. Call 131102 or visit www.museumvictoria.com.au for more information.

Sport Jacobs’ army ready By LIAM TWOMEY WESTERN Region Football League Division One coach of the year Brett Jacobs is ready to lead the competition into battle. Jacobs has been appointed head coach of the WRFL interleague side for next year’s clash against the Southern Football League. The match will be part of the first metropolitan interleague carnival since 1999 and Jacobs said he was looking forward to being involved in the concept. “I was involved (in representative football) at an under 18 level and played in a game and really liked it,” Jacobs said. “Some of the guys I played with in that side I am still mates with today. It is a really good concept in that regard. “Hopefully the players are keen to get involved. Certainly I think younger guys would be really keen. A few of the older guys who battle to get up week to week might be pushing it and give it a wide berth. If that is the case we certainly understand. “I would hope players were keen and clubs allow them to play and it is well supported.” The next step for Jacobs will be to finalise his support staff for the match which will be played at Visy Park on 29 March. Once that is complete he will look at forming the playing squad. “I would imagine we will be casting a wide net,” he said. “There are a lot of quality players going around and I think we will have a large group to start with and then make cuts each week until we finalise the squad.” Next year’s interleague carnival will see the top six metropolitan leagues square off in one huge day of football. All leagues have been ranked prior to the games with the SFL in sixth place and the WRFL in fifth. Other matches will include the fourth-placed Essendon District
Lions remain out of form By ADEM SARICAOGLU
Sunshine coach Brett Jacobs will lead the WRFL interleague side. 103727 Football League taking on the thirdplaced Northern Football League, while the battle for the prestigious number one spot will be contested between the Victorian Amateur Football Association and the Eastern Football League.
“The way the format is set up, within two years you could be playing off for the number one ranking,” Jacobs said. “It is very similar to the Country Championships and that is certainly really exciting. This is the first year
Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI
it is in but I just think it will get bigger and bigger as each year goes past. “That is why we are really hoping the clubs support it and the players get behind the process and put their hands up to be involved.”
THE Lions of Melton have not quite been their usual selves in sub-district cricket so far this summer. The reigning VSDCA South-West premier and perennial contender has not tasted victory since its very first outing of the season - a 10-run one-day win over Yarraville. Four losses have followed since that opening round triumph back in October, but middle order batsman Jeremy Liddy insists team morale is still good at MacPherson Park. “That’s been really disappointing but we can’t change the past,” Liddy said. “We’ve just got to keep fighting and hopefully things will go our way after Christmas or in the next round (away to Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows), because we don’t think we’re too far away.” Melton’s most recent loss to Altona was its third one-wicket defeat in as many games. Though poor luck and the void left behind by injured star batsman Mick Allen may well be contributing factors in that streak, Liddy believes the Lions’ batting line-up needs to match the efforts of their bowling attack so far this season. “I think 200 was a reasonable score last weekend against Altona but they obviously out-batted us and got across the line,” Liddy said. “So I think the bowling unit’s probably been out-performing the batters at this stage. “But John Varchione stepped up against Altona with 94, so we’ll be looking for more of that from our top four for the rest of the season.” Despite Melton’s current standing of 11th on the East-West table, Liddy is confident his Lions can claw their way back into the top six come finals time. Liddy also backed Melton captain-coach Nathan Geisler - who replaced on-field coach Duncan Harrison after the 2012-’13 summer - to lead the Lions back into finals contention in the second half of the season. “Nathan Geisler’s doing really well,” Liddy said. “He knows all the guys and we’re training just as hard as we did in previous years, so it’s just on the track. “Off the field everything’s going well, it’s just on the track we can’t get across the line or get that 10th wicket.
