Merry Christmas â– Arsonists steal Christmas in Hampton Park
Burning profits SEVERAL Hampton Park businesses have been dealt a devastating blow right before Christmas, after a deliberately lit fire destroyed one shop and damaged others on Tuesday. One new business, which suffered at least $150,000 worth of damage, was set to open its doors to the public today (Wednesday). Double Apple Shisha Lounge was completely destroyed by a fire which started about 2am on Tuesday. Detective Senior Constable Mark Weiderhold said police were definitely treating the fire as suspicious. “We have got a number of lines of inquiry we are following, but it’s early days, he said. While the shisha lounge was the only shop completely destroyed, many others nearby also suffered significant damage. Chadz Chicken House, which hadn’t even opened yet, was one of the businesses to be damaged by smoke and a burst water pipe. Joint-owner Jason Cruz said it was devastating that they would not be able to open up shop. “All our equipment was set up and we had moved our stock in on Monday, he said. “When we showed up at 8am, I couldn’t believe what had happened. “My cousin, who is going to run the shop with me, left school to do this job, and I quit my job.
“We had put quite a lot of time, money and effort into this shop so it’s pretty devastating. “It’s not going to be a very enjoyable Christmas for us. Mr Cruz said they were busy trying to open the shop for the busy holiday season. “We have been told this could put the opening off for a couple of months, he said. “We wanted to be open for the Christmas season. We had a lot of people waiting for us to open. Double Apple Shisha Lounge owner Mohamad Samir Rahimi said they only opened the business four weeks ago, so this was devastating in such early days. “We lost everything, he said. “We have no idea when we will be able to open again, but it will be at least three to four months. “We spent between $70,000 and $80,000 setting it up, so that’s all gone. “I believe it was deliberately lit, and all I can say to whoever it was, is that they are a coward. Hampton Park Fire Brigade’s Lieutenant Chris Gomolis said they were joined by Hallam and Narre Warren brigades to fight the blaze, with 24 firefighters attending to stop it spreading to other businesses as much as possible. Any witnesses or anyone with information in relation to the fire is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00.

Jake’s lap of honour
By BRIDGET COOK HARD work and tireless studying has paid off for students across Casey this week as they celebrate becoming the dux of their schools. All the schools in the Cranbourne and Hampton Park areas had duxes who achieved an ATAR score of more than 90, something all the principals are proud of. Hillcrest Christian College’s Hannah Tay was her school’s dux with a score of 99.30, placing her in the top 1 per cent of the state. St Peter’s College Cranbourne principal Tim Hogan congratulated the school’s dux Deep Patel, who is currently in India, for receiving a score of 97.35. “We have four students in the 90s, and about 10 per cent above 80,” he said. “So we are very pleased that their hard work and work ethic has paid off with great results for those students.” Cranbourne Secondary College’s dux was Emma Stefanovic, with a score of 96.65 and a perfect study score of 50 in English. Hampton Park Secondary College’s dux was Frances Ellayne Garcia, who received a score of 95.60. Frances said she was incredibly happy and surprised with the score. “I was not expecting to get a score high enough to get into the course I wanted, moreover being dux of my school,” she said. “I feel very blessed that all those hours of hard work have paid off and I also feel very grateful for the people who have supported me. “This has undoubtedly increased my self-esteem as a person.” Frances said she was unsure of her specific career path yet but wanted to go to university and pursue a degree in the field of science or health science. Lyndhurst Secondary College dux was Alex Smit-Geason, who scored a 90.8. Alex said she couldn’t believe she achieved such a great result. “I was not expecting that at all,” she said. “I was aiming for a 65-70 so I can get into primary school teaching, so I’m definitely thrilled with what I got. “I put a ridiculous amount of hours into studying, so it’s great it paid off. “My parents are extremely proud.”
CRANBOURNE’S Jake Ward pounded the pavement for 110 kilometres last week to raise money, increase awareness and honour those lost to cancer. Mr Ward, 28, spent almost 19 hours on Saturday 7 December running around the City of Casey and Frankston to raise as much money as he could for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). And that he did - managing to generate just over $8000 in donations which will go towards finding a cure for the disease that has taken the lives of those close to him. Mr Ward set off at 5am last Saturday to start his 110km journey, a distance he chose as it was more than an ultra-marathon of 100km. He left from his Cranbourne home, ran around Casey, made his way to Lysterfield Park then back to Cranbourne, then headed to Frankston Pier and ran along the beach before returning home. Mr Ward decided to do the fundraiser for a number of reasons, including the fact so many people were affected by the disease. “I’ve had a cousin who past away from breast cancer years ago,” he said. “I’ve also had family and friends affected by this horrible disease.” Mr Ward said his family does a fundraiser each year, along with his football club, so he decided he would do one by myself and set himself a huge challenge. He said the run was both physically and emotionally demanding, but the great community support he received kept him going. “The run, physically, was challenging as my feet and ankles were in so much pain towards the end,” he said. “Emotionally I was in a great state until I finished, then I cried, but never once thought about giving up. “The whole run was a highlight - being on Triple M, Nova and SEN was good, having laughs with friends and family along the way, police driving past for a chat and strangers tooting their horn and, of course, finishing.” Mr Ward said he had a target to raise $5000, so he was overwhelmed to blow that out of the water and received so much support throughout the run. “I received help all the way,” he said.
CASH was stolen during a breakin at a Cranbourne Thai restaurant earlier this month. A Thai restaurant on High Street was broken into between 9pm on Saturday 7 December and 9.30am on Sunday 8 December. A jemmy bar was used to force open the front door and a cash tin was taken. The same night, someone attempted to gain entry to another Cranbourne restaurant along the South Gippsland Highway but were not successful. Police said there were a series of burglaries in Endeavour Hills and Narre Warren early this year, where similar business types were targeted. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Pictures courtesy of PCB Photography. “Friends and family saw me start at 5am and my cousin Paul Eaton drove the whole way. “Then friends and family ran with me almost the whole way and they also met me at certain points to cheer me on. “I just wanted to thank all the kind people that gave up their time, donated their money and supported me along the way. “I feel like the luckiest man in the world with the support I received, I felt like a celebrity.”

VILLAWOOD Properties will join with South East Water to develop a new residential area in Lyndhurst next year. South East Water officially appointed Villawood Properties as its preferred developer for 405 Evans Road on Tuesday after a competitive tender process, with works expected to start on the site in late 2014. The new development of the 42-hectare area, formerly the Cranbourne Treatment Plant, will include a number of new water sector technologies to ensure its water is treated, recycled and

South East Water’s managing director Kevin Hutchings said the development was an exciting prospect for the water industry. “This development will bring together the latest innovations in sustainability and water management and once delivered, will establish Victoria as a world leader in integrated water cycle management,” he said. “South East Water is very much looking forward to working with Villawood Properties to push the boundaries in these areas.” Villawood Properties joint execu-

...the little things make a difference
By BRIDGET COOK THE Rotary Club of Cranbourne has swung into action to lend a helping hand to make life a lot easier for a local family. The club held its annual charity golf day last month at Ranfurlie Golf Course and managed to raise $10,000 with 90 participants. Last week the proceeds of that day were donated to the Patella family from Narre Warren South to help purchase a wheelchair modified car to safely and easily transport their son Damien around. Damien, 6, has severe global brain damage, epilepsy, microcephaly, and hypotonic cerebral palsy and is unable to crawl, walk, talk or feed himself. His mother Wendy said he now weighs about 26 kilograms, so it was becoming a lot harder for her to transport Damien around. “Damien is growing quickly and I now struggle to lift Damien out of his wheelchair and into the booster seat in the car,” she said. “Currently I keep bumping one or both of our heads on the door frame and have injured both my shoulders and sprained my ribs lifting him.” Ms Patella said she needs to raise $70,000 to purchase a suitable car, like a Kia Carnival,

The proceeds of the Rotary Club of Cranbourne’s annual charity golf went to Wendy Patella, to help her purchase a wheelchair modified car so she can transport her son Damien around. and then have it modified to cater for a wheelchair. The government provides $10,000 towards the modification, which costs a total of $34,000. Ms Patella said the donation from the Rotary Club had doubled her fundraising efforts so far. “It reminds us all that there are some very good people in our community, willing to lend a hand,” she said. “When I accepted the cheque in person I thanked Cranbourne Rotary for their time, consideration, understanding and generosity toward my family and I.
“I didn’t expect that a 15 minute presentation about us to the Cranbourne Rotary members would have resulted in such an amazing donation.” Ms Patella is now seeking support in any way possible from the rest of the community. “Next year I will be approaching local businesses for donations and I hope to sell six advertising positions on the doors of the new vehicle for $3500 to $5000,” she said. People can also make a www. GoFundMe.com/DamiensHelpingHands or search ‘Damien’s Helping Hands’ to follow his journey on Facebook.

I AM writing to address the inaccuracies in Mr Francois’ letter (‘Third World Country’, News, 5 December). The City of Casey prides itself on delivering quality customer service, however, Mr Francois’ letter paints a picture of an unresponsive council. Mr Francois isn’t telling the full story. In fact the rubbish he first called about was picked up when the area was mowed. His later calls were about different rubbish. Mr Francois’ letter omitted reference to two messages left on his mobile phone by council staff - the first to advise that this rubbish was in an area that was VicRoads’ responsibility, and the second to advise that the matter had been reported to VicRoads for action. A council officer inspection earlier this month confirmed that the rubbish was removed. Residents requiring customer service assistance can contact council on 9705 5200 or via its website at www.casey.vic.gov.au Mike Tyler, City of Casey CEO.

Seasonal spirit THERE is a spirit called alcohol Which comes in various guises; Beer, champagne, wine and cider, Regarded all as prizes. It’s good for cleaning and preserving And killing pestiferous bugs, But when humans imbibe it, as they do, Weird behaviour ensues - they’re thugs! It attacks the brain and other tissues It dumbs and numbs good manners It causes accidents and deaths And it’s advertised with banners. Of all modern drugs it is the worst, It has infiltrated all classes! O Lord, when will its bubble burst? When will humans clean their glasses? It blinds the mind, it addles the brain, It causes violent thirst; Why don’t they pour it down the drain? By the Devil it is cursed! The Bible and science judge it alike; Wine is a mocker, strong drink rages; New wine’s OK, in the cluster The Bible’s proclaimed that for ages. Why can’t they see it? Why don’t they flee it? Why don’t they care? Why so unfair To themselves and to others who share This planet? Why’s the word “No” very rare? Alcohol ruins the reason. No time is always the season To sip and to drink and to make the breath stink At least I can say, “It’s not pleasin’!” Jocelyn Grant, Hallam.
Budget won’t budge it
HEAD OFFICE:

THE State Treasurer’s recent mid-year budget update has serious implications for Casey ratepayers. Treasurer Michael O’Brien’s budget forecasts are based on conservative assumptions that a government budget surplus is the most important measure of a good budget;even if that means accepting six per cent unemployment and below average economic growth and even if the state economy is underperforming. Austerity spending measures are, at the same time, also by seen by the treasurer as far more important than stimulating a deflated Victorian economy. Unemployment and low growth, Mr O’Brien, means the state economy is out of balance and in need of fiscal correction, as opposed to contraction, policy measures. Forecasts of a budget surplus of $900 million in the 2014-’15 financial year show that the Coalition has the capacity to create employment, within a low inflation and low interest rate economy, but has decided to keep the state economy in slow gear. With the Coalition’s budget obsessed with achieving a surplus, rather than increased spending on infrastructure and community services, in addition to its regressive revenue measures, Casey residents will inevitably face another rates rise next financial year, on top of the 7.5 per cent increase this year, as councils attempt to address the impacts of Michael O’Brien’s austerity budget policies. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.
Not offended I AM a Muslim woman. I have lived in the Western world (Canada, USA and Australia) for over 25 years now. Every year, I look forward to the festive ambience and the beautiful decorations that are linked with the Christmas season. Even though my family does not observe Christmas as a religious tradition, we do enjoy the Christmas spirit, which means kindness, generosity, being with family and loved ones and spreading goodness all around you. The Christmas spirit hence translates into values which are recognised and upheld universally by people of all cultures, traditions and faiths. As a person of my own faith, I would have no qualms in saying that I would never be offended by Christmas festivities, whether that means decorations being put up all around town, or displays of Nativity, or related activities, just as I would never be offended by celebrations of any other religious
Ray’s say
or cultural festival that in spirit spreads goodness, kindness and evokes a deep sense of happiness. Merry Christmas to all residents of Casey, Melbourne, Australia and the world. Naureen Choudhry, Narre Warren.
Name blame I WONDER if those bureaucrats in council who named a street in Cranbourne East Bianca Crescent were aware that there is a court already existing in Cranbourne North called Bianco Crt. It is very frustrating for residents of Bianco Crt to continually receive mail for unknown persons in Bianca Cres. It is equally frustrating for residents of either court to not receive their mail or have it delayed while it is readdressed. It appears that laziness is the benchmark in whatever department named Bianca Cres. Danny Mulqueen, Cranbourne North.

Picture: DONNA OATES in demand, with more than 200 families for the Christmas assistance program so far and still going, she said. “The increase can be attributed to continued increase in population and households finding it really hard to keep up with rising costs of private rental, utility bills and general cost of living and no similar increase in their income. Ms Magee said the community support had kept CISS members inspired. “It is our aim to make sure that there is a gift from Santa for all children 12 and under and that all families have a spe-
cial meal on Christmas Day, she said. Ms Petrides urged members of the community to continue to donate in any way they could because the Christmas assistance program relied on donations. After Christmas, families which are struggling to pay for school costs might be eligible for a no-interest loan of up to $800 as part of their loan scheme by the services. THE generosity of the Casey community has helped two local support services to keep up with the demand from those less fortunate this Christmas. Cranbourne and Casey North Information and Support Services (CISS) has been inundated with donations from businesses and organisations in the lead up to Christmas which have then been distributed to those in need of assistance. Cranbourne CISS manager Leanne Petrides said there had been a significant increase in demand for their services in the past month. “Most people are coming in for assistance for Christmas celebrations, with food and toys, she said. “We have also been seeing between five and 10 families a day for our Back to School support program. “Often people don’t think of the additional pressure families find themselves under this time of year with school costs for the new year. Ms Petrides said the generous support from the local community has helped them keep up with the demand as much as possible. “It’s this time of year that we are fortunate enough to again see the amazing generosity of people who live in this local area, who believe in supporting those who need it most, she said. Casey North CISS manager Susan Magee said it was a similar case at her facility. “There has been an increase

CASEY’S young wordsmiths were recognised last month for their creativity and flair in the Fresh Words Young Writers Competition. The winners of the sixth annual competition, held by the council, were presented at an awards dinner on Thursday 21 November. There were seven winners and 12 finalists announced out of the record number of 129 entries. Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett presented the finalists and winners with their awards at the dinner. “Words can shape and influence our world and in the hands of skilled and talented writers, can inspire people in their millions and leave lasting impressions on all those touched by them, he said. “Tonight, I’m reminded again of just how impressive
and talented the young people in the City of Casey are. “I would like to congratulate all of tonight’s participants for their skill and enthusiasm. Guest speaker at the awards was Lili Wilkinson, author of young adult fiction including Scatterheart, Angel Fish and A Pocketful of Eyes. Ms Wilkinson encouraged the emerging writers to work hard, take every opportunity to develop their skills and shared her own journey about becoming a published author. The competition was open to young people in years seven to 12, in the categories of creative writing, poetry and lyrics and English as a second language. Entries were judged by a number of criteria, including the expression of ideas, the accurate use of spelling and grammar, vocabulary and originality.

Facing up to their Demons THE Melbourne Football Club (MFC) got into the spirit of giving this Christmas, by hosting a festive party for the Casey community. A large crowd, including a number of schools, turned out for the MFC’s Christmas Party on Monday held at Casey Fields. People of all ages had the opportunity to watch the club train, meet the coaches, get an autograph from their favourite players and meet Santa Claus. There were also free giveaways, a sausage sizzle and a chance to signup for Deezone, the club’s new dedicated website for kids.

BY BRIDGET COOK SPOTLIGHT opened its first Cranbourne store to much fanfare last week, with crowds lining up from 7am to be amongst the first customers. The new Cranbourne Homemaker Centre opened its doors to the public on Wednesday 11 December, with musicians and bargain prices to celebrate the opening. The new store has created 30 fulltime jobs. Spotlight Retail Group chief executive Quentin Gracanin said they were excited to now
be part of the Cranbourne community. “Within five weeks we have created not only a fantastic looking brand new store, but built a fantastic new team,” he said. “We would like to welcome them all to the Spotlight family and look forward to offering our customers in Cranbourne the best possible range at the lowest prices.” BB Retail Capital (BBRC) asset management chief executive Darren Holland said they were delighted to welcome Spotlight to the Cranbourne
Homemaker Centre. “They add to a vibrant retail mix for our local customers,” he said. “They were attracted to the centre due to the strong retail mix already trading.” Since BBRC acquisition of the Cranbourne Homemaker Centre in 2005 it has doubled in size as a precinct in homemaker shopping and has created 150 full-time jobs. In 2014, Masters will join the Cranbourne Homemaker Centre which will add another huge amount of retail space and create 350 jobs during building.

CRANBOURNE’S Sulochana Naidu and Lyndhurst Secondary College have one thing in common - they are both working to improve cultural harmony in the Casey community. This month, they were recognised for doing just that when they were presented with an honour at the 2013 Multicultural Awards for Excellence. Ms Naidu was given an award for meritorious service to the community and Lyndhurst Secondary College received an education award for its Multipride program. Ms Naidu migrated to Australia from Fiji in 1988. She got involved in community work in 2001 when she was invited to take up an executive position in the Gippsland Indian Association, where she has taken many roles in the past 10 years. She is now the vice president of the Triveni Society of Victoria in Casey. Over the years, Ms Naidu has organised many events and activities to help different cultures assimilate into the community including family, community and spiritual camps, sporting events, picnics, religious festivals, harmony days in schools and fundraising activities. Ms Naidu said a major problem she experienced when she moved to Australia was culture shock and through her work she aims to help others through that. “Many go through this shock and need strong support in order to integrate with the local culture,” she said. “Our culture provided a refuge for many who experienced identity crisis, lacked self-confidence, were victims of domestic violence and would have been lost into the world of drugs and alcoholism. “Hence my efforts to keep our traditions and culture alive provided a strong base to support those who were feeling lost in their new homeland. “Further, I’ve used my culture as a stimulant to participate in other cultures and take advantage of the opportunities the
Cranbourne resident Sulochana Naidu won a 2013 Multicultural Awards for Excellence this month. Picture: DONNA OATES country offered.” Ms Naidu said she aimed to create harmony and understanding between the diverse cultures in Casey. “The world is a global village,” she said. “However, due to the misunderstandings and wrong myths about different cultures and faiths, peace and harmony is disturbed. “Active involvement and understanding of other cultures removes any ill feelings and wrong ideas we have about other cultures.” Ms Naidu said she was thrilled to receive the award and it was an incentive to continue with her passion for promoting harmony in the multicultural community of Victoria. Lyndhurst Secondary College was recognised at the awards for its Multipride program, which it introduced when it had a significant increase in students from migrant and refugee backgrounds from about 2008. The school began experiencing racially motivated incidences and took swift action.
A working group of staff and students was formed, including those who were involved in the incidents, who met on a weekly basis. The group has since run lunchtime activities, participated in leadership programs, developed partnerships with the council and multicultural organisations and speaks at assemblies. The school has experienced a change in school behaviour and has now started promoting the Multipride model to other schools. Principal Warren Wills said it was a great honour to receive the award. “Our students, staff and parents are proud to receive such a prestigious award that recognises the hard work of our college community,” he said. “This program was important as it promotes cultural harmony whilst developing students as leaders within our community. “It has further improved multiculturalism and, in doing so, has enriched and advanced not only our college culture but also that of other schools.”

Best there are NOMINATIONS are now open for the 2014 Holt Australia Day Awards which aim to recognise those who have made a significant contribution to the Casey community. Holt MP Anthony Byrne hosts the awards annually and is again on the committee to nominate those worthy of the recognition. “I’m calling for community, sporting and service organisations and members of the public to nominate one individual they believe to have made a significant contribution to the local community in a voluntary or philanthropic capacity,” he said. In January this year, Mr Byrne honoured 33 individuals and two local organisations for their contribution to the community on Australia Day. Mr Byrne caught up with one of the recipients, Brittany Leo, and her mother Tracey last week to promote the awards and show the community the type of characters that are worthy of them. “Brittany is a very talented 17-year-old singer from Narre Warren,” he said. “She has been performing regularly at venues and events around Casey and the wider Melbourne metropolitan area for the last three to four years. “When a charity or fund-raising event needs performers, Brittany is always one of the first to put her hand up. “Brittany is a very talented young lady who gives freely of her time to perform and is a credit to the Casey community.” Nominations close on 16 January. To nominate someone or for more information contact Mr Byrne’s office on 9796 7533. 1097291-EP43-13

UPON entry to this secluded Cranbourne South property, one thing is immediately clear privacy is key. But upon entry, its sheer beauty is instantly breathtaking. Originally constructed in approximately 1870 on the Mornington Peninsula, the main house’s high ceilings come to the fore in the primary hallway. The 14-foot ceilings highlight the sheer size of the stunning chandeliers - with a ceiling rose detail. The weatherboard homestead has been extensively renovated, using only the very best materials. All the home’s feature rooms contain magnificent marble fireplaces, and even the guest bedrooms are more spacious than most main bedrooms. Giant bay windows look out through a deep verandah and on to the rolling green fields at the front of the property. The main residence includes three bedrooms, a huge study, grand formal lounge/dining, family room and informal dining room. All told, there are five marble and cast iron fireplaces. A separate, private hallway leading off the main bedroom leads into a walk-in robe, toilet and bathroom with traditional tiling. Brilliant leadlight sash windows look out from the fully tiled master bathroom onto the fountain that takes pride of place in the expansive backyard. The main bedroom, itself, has a door that opens out onto the verandah overlooking the garden. Both bathrooms feature stylish, yet highly practical wooden dressers and in every room
in the homestead there is an abundance of storage space. The property features garden views from virtually every vantage point. The spacious open plan kitchen/ dining is a stunning combination of marble benchtops and rosewood timber. The star attraction is a striking fireplace featuring a wall of handmade bricks. The kitchen leads into a sunroom with bi-fold doors, which open into a covered entertainment area with a spa. A covered walkway leads from the main house to the annexe, a separate very large formal room - any man’s dream with a full size snooker-table. Over the snooker table is an unusual built-in lighting cabinet, which houses an overhead projector - perfect for your Saturday afternoon sport. To finish off there is also a professionally built wet bar. A triple car garage; wine cellar; and additional bedroom complete with bathroom and toilet adjoin the annexe. To the rear of the main house is a floodlit tennis court, spectacular pool and separate two-bedroom, two-bathroom self-contained cottage. A five car garage or workshop has a heavy-duty concrete floor and ample lighting - perfectly suited for boys and their toys.

A family festival at the market.
Twilight Christmas Krystal Leah, from Lynbrook, gets a photo with Santa.
Braelan Newman, Annabel Keats, Cleo Talbot, Belen Coggins and Kaden Newman, from Elana’s Dance Centre, performed at The Lynbrook Village Christmas Parade.
Festive love in Lynbrook There were also giveaways, balloon modelling, Christmas storytelling, local performances and prizes for the whole family to enjoy. News photographer DONNA OATES was there to catch all the action on camera.
Medically Speaking
Mabior and Anyeith enjoy a cuddle with one of the roving characters.
A Star Advertising Feature
Some see little joy at Christmas CHRISTMAS is considered a time of joy, but for many people it can be an emotionally difficult period in their lives. Matthew Bullen, pastoral carer at St John of God Berwick Hospital recalls the experience of a client who dreaded the festive season. Matthew said: “For my client, hearing the sound of Christmas carols marked the beginning of another season of living with grief and loneliness amidst so much enforced joy. “It brought up feelings of resentment
with the expectation to join in the cheer at a time when the memories of the loss of her husband to an unexpected death several years ago seemed so entrenched. “She felt that her reality of grief and loneliness marked her out as different, especially at Christmas and on many days it was hard for her to bear.” Matthew said that many peoples’ experiences of loss, grief and pain bubble to the surface during Christmas. He said: “It’s a time that can be particularly difficult for people where our
culture emboldens a cheery and optimistic outlook that sometimes masks the vulnerability of people in their reality of grief and loss.” Matthew said it was important for people to be aware of and acknowledge their true feelings, however uncomfortable and unseasonal they are. THE festive spirit was well and truly alive in Lynbrook on the weekend for the annual Christmas parade. A huge crowd turned out to watch the parade through the shopping village with Santa arriving on a CFA fire truck, Mrs Claus, an elf, a pixie and roving characters.
The Christmas Farmers’ Market will again feature a family festival at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick. The whole family can enjoy the wonderful park surroundings as the venue prepares for and celebrates the festive season. The Rotary Club of Berwick and Father Christmas will welcome parents and their children to the twilight market. Organisers say they want to reward their customers who have made the market a greater success this year. Customers will enjoy two gifts - the outstanding quality of farmers’ products and a range of treats for their children. The children’s activities will include face painting, a jumping castle, playground fun, bubble generators, lollies, balloons and other goodies. Customers can enjoy a coffee or brunch while the youngsters safely burn energy in the jumping castle. The vegetable selection ranges across the alphabet - from asparagus and beans, through to zucchini. There will be delicious seasonal fruits - from apples and cherries to raspberries and strawberries. Rotary Club of Berwick Farmers Twilight Market is at The Old Cheese Factory, 34 Homestead Road, Berwick, on Monday 23 December from 4pm to 8pm. Parking is free. Inquiries to Joe Collins at jco33418@bigpond.net.au

PJs and onesies on show THERE was no mad rush for children getting ready for kindergarten when Rangebank Preschool held its pyjama day last month. Director Barbara Ryan said both children and staff enjoyed the event on Wednesday 27 November, where they came to preschool in the pyjamas and onesies and shared breakfast together. “All enjoyed the special treat and comparing their PJ’s with their peers,” she said. News photographer STEWART CHAMBERS was there to catch all the action.

Giveability Day a big hit By LACHLAN MOORHEAD WESTFIELD Fountain Gate was a sea of yellow earlier this month as volunteers from the shopping centre and Yooralla celebrated Giveability Day. Giveability Day is celebrated in July and December by Westfield Shopping Centres nationwide, with Fountain Gate raising money for their specific partner Yooralla Children’s Services. Throughout the day 55,030 people attended and got involved with the face painting, stilt walking, balloon modelling, sausage sizzle and the champagne bar. The petting zoo was a definite hit, while many Christmas shoppers also donated gifts to Yooralla, which were wrapped by volunteers on the day. Helping out at Westfield Fountain Gate on Giveability Day, Saturday 7 December were 15 volunteers, including five from Yooralla and the rest from the shopping centre’s management team. Fox FM broadcasted live from the centre during the events and 50 people won Village Gold Class tickers throughout the day.

Sport Field of dreams By JARROD POTTER HER Christmas tree will be decorated with plenty of gold this year after Courtney Field brought home plenty from last week’s state cycling championships. Field, 16, from Berwick, continued her rapid rise through the cycling ranks to add another trio of state championship medals to her already burgeoning trophy cabinet. At the recently held Victorian Senior Track Cycling Championships, Field smashed in personal best times in her three gold medal winning rides - the junior-women under-19 500m time trial, the 200m sprint and the keirin. “Just had states this weekend and it went pretty well - did PBs in all my events and the racing was pretty good,” Field said. “It’s my first year in the age category, but I did race in it last year when I did the Youth Olympics - I was moved up an age category, which rarely happens.” A hectic 2013, capped off by her Australian Youth Olympic Festival gold medals in the sprint women and team sprint, as well as a silver medal in the keirin, will hopefully pay dividends for an even bigger 2014 for the track cyclist. Field’s hopes for the near future include making the Australian national team to compete at the Youth World Championships in South Korea in July next year. It would help fulfil a dream for Field, who would love the opportunity to represent her country and if everything goes her way, win a rainbow jersey. “Had a really heavy year, racing up an age group in most of my events and then just training all winter getting ready for this upcoming season,” Field said. “Hopefully I can get selected to go to South Korea for the Junior Worlds next year.” “I’ll try to get ready for all my events if I get selected. “The teams sprint - not sure who my partner would be but probably the New South Wales girl Bridget Mullany - the sprint, the keirin and the 500m time-trial.

Final’s encounter a bright light By RUSSELL BENNETT MERINDA Park and Pakenham are set to face off in a Premier grade day-night blockbuster at Toomuc Reserve early in the new year. The clash, scheduled for 11 January, will see Jess Mathers and Jarrod Armitage do battle with the likes of Chris Smith and Russ Lehman and serve as a preview for a potential finals encounter later in the season. The game will be played at Toomuc Reserve’s main ground and start at 3pm. The first innings will be completed by 5.30 with the second starting half an hour later and finishing under
lights between 8.30 and 9pm. White balls will be used and both the Lions and Cobras will have the option to wear coloured pants and shirts. The boundary will be roped in with the size between 65 and 70 metres. Merinda Park also has the opportunity to train under the Toomuc Reserve lights on 7 January from 7.30pm. The Cracker Jackson pavilion will be open for use on the evening of the game, with fans able to watch the game from the balcony with a few refreshments. A beer both will be open downstairs as well.
Three state championships and an invite into Victoria’s track nationals team capped off a stellar week on the bike for Courtney Field. 112302 Picture: JARROD POTTER “It would mean the world to me - all my hard effort and everything that I’ve sacrificed, it would just show off that everything I’ve done so far was worth it.” Field’s achievements at the state championships earned her a spot on the Cycling Victoria team to participate at
the 2014 Subaru Cycling Australia National Track Championships from January 29 to 1 February in Adelaide.Field wanted to thank her coach Hilton Clarke, the Victorian Institute of Sport, her parents and her club - Carnegie-Caulfield Cycling Club.

By BRIDGET SCOTT A DIFFERENT name is just one of the many changes the Casey Netball Association has undergone, with many more on the way. Previously known as the Cranbourne South West Netball Association, the organisation is about to enter its 60th year and the dedicated committee members are thrilled to boast more than 3000 members. After initial challenges in changing the name, the new title was introduced at the annual general meeting this year and an update on the logo was also agreed upon. Long-time committee member Debbie Schramm, who has been part of the association for more than 20 years, said the organisation is renewing itself. “We wanted to change the name so we could come in line with the City of Casey, council and the area,” she
City of Casey Councillor Amanda Stapledon with the Casey Netball Association committee, Gayle Sparks, Sue Booth, Peter Bibby, Stuart Coutts, Debbie Schramm, Toni Henderson, Alysa Langham, Rebekah Booth and Meaghan Elkins. 112437 said. “It’s to better represent the area and where our netballers are coming from - we have had a reinvention and are updating everything.” The Casey Netball Association is in the top five largest associations across Victoria and has more than 400 teams. Ms Schramm said she can remember when the as-
sociation first began and the netball games took place at a local racecourse, with a few teams playing in the betting ring. “They would have never imagined it would have grown as big as it has,” she said. The netball group now runs out of the Casey Leisure Centre and committee mem-
bers from the Casey Netball association rejoiced at the announcement that the complex would receive an update. “We were outgrowing our stadium,” Ms Schramm said. “But it got funding from the State Government and there will be another four courts, a new entrance and car park.” Ms Schramm said everyone on the committee is excited about a partnership with Netball Victoria and the City of Casey. “We are hoping these partnerships really take off and become prominent,” she said. Ms Schramm said the group is also eagerly anticipating the celebration of its 60th anniversary in June next year, which will tie in with a huge rejuvenation to the association. “We are excited about the new change,” she said. “It’s like a new starting point for the association.”

Spirit put to the test CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS CLUB REAL RSL fighting spirit was put to the test on Saturday as two teams fought out nail-biting games and both coming out victorious. In fact all three teams won in another impressive performance from the club. It was a case of second time lucky in Division 2 for Ron Hansen’s team as they powered home to anchor RSL’s big win, 25-14, over fourth place team Narre Warren. Wally Ballard’s team also bowled well all day to record a 20-13 win. Results: Cranbourne RSL 79 (Ron Hansen 25-14, Wally Ballard 20-13, Walter Brannan 17-17 and Mal Watkinson 17-20) d Narre Warren 62. Division 5 had a close win at home against Noble Park, making it four wins in a row. The team is on a hot streak at the moment and is confident it will continue next week in its last game before Christmas. Doug Ambrose and Tom Hodge’s teams did most of the damage, recording six and five shot wins. Results: Cranbourne RSL 74 (Doug Ambrose 20-14, Tom Hodges 21-16, Jack Hosie 15-16 and Murray Bulte 18-25) d Noble Park 71. In Division 8, there was a nailbiting finish to a thrilling game of bowls with the RSL getting home by the barest possible margin of one shot. New skip Maree Hodges team ensuring the win with a three-shot win. That’s three in a row now for this new team and there’s certainly more wins to come. Results: Cranbourne RSL 45 (Maree Hodges 22-19 and Percy
Leake 23-25) d Cardinia Waters 44. King of the Rinks for this week was the team of Ron Hansen, Ken Hocking, Jesus Carretero and Paul Males who ended 13 shots up. The Pairs Championship final was played on Sunday 15 December and it was Ron Hansen who backed up his Singles Championship win from last week when he joined Wally Ballard to take out the title. Ken Walker and Marijan Bobetic started well but Ron and Wally finished strongly, recording a 25-19 victory in a high-quality game of bowls. The Mixed Pairs Championship Final was also played on Sunday 15 December with the team of Ray Chapman and Denise Meulman leading all day to defeat Steve and Karen Hickson 18-9. CRANBOURNE BOWLS CLUB A revitalised Cranbourne Bowls Club division one side made it three wins in a row with a 13-shot win, on the road against Burden Park. Chairman of selectors Rob ‘Cyclopes’ Lillis was delighted with the win. “With a new belief in ourselves we can beat anyone in the competition,” he said. “No more will sides treat Cranbourne as the easy beats. We still have a long way to go but with three rinks up against a quality opposition this is a very satisfying result.” Meanwhile, with a large number of players unavailable this week, the remaining four Cranbourne sides were defeated but hopefully this situation will improve next week and we can look forward to better results from these teams.
