2013 passed in a flurry of activity for the Noosa Today team, as the independent local community newspaper went from strength to strength. They say time flies when you’re having fun so I must have enjoyed it, although some weeks remain a blur! At the start of 2013, Noosa Today hadn’t yet opened its Mary Street office and the team was small. We were still finding our feet, and our look. Now, at the start of 2014, we have an office, a growing team of enthusiastic, locally-based staff and a reputation as Noosa’s favourite local paper. Thanks to our local design and print team, the newspaper looks and feels great, helping our advertisers promote their businesses in the best possible way. Our sales team continue to find innovative and cost-effective ways of promoting locals, and encouraging residents and visitors to shop locally. And our editorial team is always busy, covering the important issues affecting this community and supporting local charities, clubs and organisations.

was it really all that torturous…the year that we just had? Well I’ve certainly been tested in a personal kind of way with ups and downs all over the place though I’m still around today. And I wish with all my being for some better times ahead, a break or three to roll with me — more joyful times instead. So it takes about ten seconds now for me to get a grip, to glance cross life’s reality with my hands perched on my hip. FLASHBACK: Noosa Today’s front page on January 4, 2013 Last week we looked back at the highlights of 2013. This week, we look ahead, with key members of our community outlining their hopes for the year ahead. And what an historic year it will be, as Noosa takes back its council and its independence. Noosa’s new mayor and six councillors were officially declared into office in Cooroy this morning, and at 1pm, the first meeting of the new Noosa Council will be held in Tewantin. As a truly independent community newspaper, dedicated to supporting and promoting the Noosa Shire as a whole, Noosa Today was behind de-amalgamation from day one. We look forward to working with you all to ensure a great future for the Shire.

And give myself an upper-cut for an ungrateful attitude, with my conscience to the rescue to allay this inner feud. So I look at where I am in life through honest open eyes, first glance finds Australia — I immediately realise. It rattles my teeth with one right-cross and I’m over my dismay, embarrassed to the limits by this ‘poor me’ interplay. Because it only takes refocussing for one second on where I am, with twenty-three million Aussies in our own down-under land. And if money’s tight at present and life tracks a tad skew-if, one thought of other countries and selfish clouds begin to lift. For it doesn’t take an Einstein to see I’ve really been quite spoiled, to be born and raised with freedom in this land of golden soil. So with upper-cuts now put on hold and an outlook ever keen, I resolve to be more grateful across this year — of twentyfourteen. Harry Donnelly

Friends of Lake Weyba (FoLW) this week slammed the proposed Noosa on Weyba (NoW) developers for “peddling their creatively edited statistics to the local community”.

Local businessman Brian Hayes is warning partygoers to take care this season after his son was king hit while out in Noosa Heads.

status of this land was recognised by both Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the State Government’s own Department of Environment and Heritage Protection when they recommended against the declaration of the Biodiversity Development Offset Agreement. “The NoW team should not include this area in the statistics of land they will “protect” as it is already protected. In fact, the biggest threat to this land is from the Noosa on Weyba proposal itself.” Ms Brake said statistics for the remaining site being considered for

development are alarming. “FoLW has examined documents submitted to Council by the developer and estimate that the housing precincts proposed would cover approximately 70 hectares or 43 per cent of the land. This doesn’t include land that would be required for roads or other infrastructure,” she said. “Of the land closest to Lake Weyba this density increases to 70 per cent with a clubhouse, retail centre, apartments, attached and detached housing being designated for the lake shore. 11,200 mature

trees would be removed across the site. “Our group and the local community can see through the green wash coming from the NoW team. This has been reflected in the public support FoLW has received over the last year and in the 1000+ objections lodged during the public submission period. “I’m confident the two Councils will carefully consider the development application and make the right decision for the future protection of this environmentally sensitive land.”

told Noosa Today on Monday that they received notification of the closure in the form of an unsigned advice, stating “sustained continual losses” as the reason for the closure. The advice states the club will be put up for sale next year but will allow bowls to continue until a buyer is found. Cooroy Bowls Club member and ex-serviceman Gale Duffield

said the closure was devastating. Mr Duffield said he was one of the many members who helped establish the restaurant almost two years ago and he was “heartbroken to see the bar already stripped”. As a retired ex-serviceman, he said he was too old to play any other sport and relied heavily on the Bowls Club to keep active. Mr Duffield said he was ready to fight for his favourite club,

claiming the closure “breaches the constitution and is unethical”. “The closure of the Bowls Club itself is not accepted by many members as final,” Mr Duffield said. “I’m a digger, I have fight in me.” Comment was not available from Cooroy Bowls Club at the time of going to print.

Mr Hayes said his son, 23, was at a nightclub on Hastings Street last Sunday when he went outside to look for a friend. “Three ‘heroes’ of around 20 years old approached him accusing him of hitting one of them. (My son) denied the claim saying that he didn’t know them and hadn’t seen them before,” Mr Hayes said. Mr Hayes said while his son was speaking to the men, one came from behind and king-hit him, smashing his jaw and knocking him to the ground. “My son recalls going to the ground and seeing these scumbags running off,” Mr Hayes said. Since the attack, Mr Hayes and his wife Marie have endured sleepless nights wondering what could have been. “Thankfully they didn’t continue and put the boot in and he is only sporting a sore jaw,” he said. “We, as a family, could have well been burying a son and brother rather than celebrating Christmas together. “We now have a glimpse into the devastation that comes into the lives of those losing a loved one to acts of random violence.” Mr Hayes said these words are wasted on the “gutless animals” responsible for the attack, but he hopes they act as a warning to other party-goers this summer season. “To all parents and guardians out there, you cannot tell your kids too many times to look out for themselves and stay close to their mates.” Mr Hayes said the family have contacted the Police but no charges have been laid as his son doesn’t know his attacker and no witnesses have come forward. The group says that contrary to what the developers are claiming, the “proposal would be a disaster for Lake Weyba and its surrounding ecosystems”. The developers say NoW will “protect 245 hectares of wildlife habitat as a major component of the development application” currently before Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Development director for the project, Steve MacRae, said a site analysis showed that “240 hectares of the 303 hectares site area will either remain untouched or become part of protected environmental zones”. “This means that around 80 per cent of the site will be retained for environmental protection,” he said. But FoLW President Anita Brake said the land the NoW consortium wish to “donate” to the State Government for National Park is already protected under local planning regulations. “This land is designated Open Space Conservation or Rural under the Noosa Plan. The protected

Noosa as a university town of the 21st century? NOOSA – THE WAY AHEAD GREG REDDAWAY

Higher education could and should be a game-changer for the Noosa economy and culture.

This is a follow-up to an article titled ‘Noosa and its new council, what next?’ Thank you for the feedback. It was all constructive and well thought out. I look forward to the continuing conversations. My email address is greg@sunstay.com.au To characterise the landscape for universities as complex in the next decade, much less the next 50 years is a massive understatement. It’s a minefield wrapped in an enigma, or some other mixed metaphors. Bill Gates said in 2010 the best college lectures in the world will be available, online for free, within five years. How is that for a massive disruption to a business or education model? Other universities across the world are sinking serious money in to bricks and mortar and ‘betting the farm’ on a business as usual model. At our back door, Sunshine Coast University is just completing a new $25 million building, and has others under construction. What does all this mean to an aspirational, cheeky little start up university? Deep uncertainty for sure. But opportunity as well. Where traditional models are being disrupted in all fields, opportunities emerge. So, without the bricks and mortar legacy of an institution steeped in the history of ‘we build it - you come - we lecture you, mentality’, the world of higher education or a niche anyway, is ours to mould in to something which fits the Noosa model of life.

“If we can pull off the challenge of being not just a museum for the ‘saved natural environment’ but a functioning (green) economy, then the world will beat a track to our door to discover how we did it.” The single biggest plus a Noosa university will have is the Noosa brand. Noosa in known nationally and internationally thanks to years of hard work by Tourism Noosa. People love the ‘idea’ of Noosa. The low risk, start-up model, which Noosa could pursue, closely resembles the one followed in Noosa by Central Queensland University. This model identified a need (student

teachers) and a campus (Pomona State School) and married the two together. Former Noosa and Sunshine Coast Councillor, Lew Brennan championed this cause. Today this model, CQU, has around 600 students operating from leased premises, and plans to grow to 1200 students over the next few years. Maybe there is a model along the CQU lines where we use the expertise of the Noosa Council town planners to teach town planning students the Noosa model of sustainable urban planning. A co-location, in the lingo. Other co-location opportunities may include: Noosa Parks Association could run a course

in how to retain and improve a natural environment with functioning villages interspersed in the natural environment (a biosphere). What about the multi-award-winning Tourism Noosa having a co-located course running with them, teaching their skills to national and international aspiring and executive tourism practitioners? Then there is building design for sub-tropical locations. Noosa clearly excels in this niche and with Asia the world’s economic powerhouse in the coming decades, this could be a wonderful skill set to export by way of international students. Like it or not, thanks to the population cap, and the associated regulation around the built environment, we who live in Noosa are ‘lab rats’. If we can pull off the challenge of being not just a museum for the ‘saved natural environment’ but a functioning (green) economy, then the world will beat a track to our door to discover how we did it. And right there, is another course maybe. This is clearly a large subject. With the indulgence of Noosa Today, I will return to it, to look at how Noosa could create its own university.

Time will tell, say business leaders A reduction in red tape and bureaucracy is boosting small business confidence, according to the Queensland Government.

A new survey from the Sensis Business Index report recorded the strongest increase in small business support and recognised the positive impact of the first Queensland Small Business week, according to a press release from the Government. Minister for Small Business Jann Stuckey said the Newman Government’s commitment to reduce red tape and bureaucracy were the reason for the boost.

“The real test of the strength of our local economy will come after the holiday season.” “The Government will continue to push for a strong and prosperous small business sector by reducing unemployment to four per cent and cutting red

tape by 20 per cent by 2018,” Ms Stuckey said. But Chamber of Commerce and Industry Noosa president Sarah Fisher said only time will tell if there has been any significant boost to small business. Ms Fisher said business confidence in Noosa is on an upward curve thanks to local campaigns and good weather, but it is important to note that it has grown from a deep low. “The real test of the strength of our local economy will come after the holiday season,” Ms Fisher said. “When the tourists have departed and the wet season sets in, we will be able to tell if the apparent boost in business confidence is a mirage or the real deal.”

New Year boost for boaties It will be a Happy New Year for local boaties with the Newman Government promising a new floating walkway as part of the $50 million Marine Infrastructure Fund.

Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, said the second round of projects would continue to upgrade and build additional

recreational boating facilities across Queensland. “This funding will allow for a new floating walkway at Albert Street, Noosa, coinciding with the reconstruction of the boat ramp which I announced in December 2012,” Mr Elmes said. “The project will make it quicker, easier and safer to use the boat ramp. “This continues to deliver

on our election commitment to the many recreational boaties in the Noosa area. “Planning for the project is underway and I expect work to begin during 2014,” he said The projects had been agreed with councils and port authorities, which will co-fund the works under a partnership agreement with the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Mr Franks said Council would also set an operational plan and budget for the next six months. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The proposal is for no rate changes so all rates and levies will remain exactly as they are,â&#x20AC;? he said. Noosa Councillor Tony Wellington confirmed that the new Council would be â&#x20AC;&#x153;starting off with a bangâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Apart from procedural matters that will see the new Council returning to a far more transparent operating system, we will also be endorsing a budget for the first half of 2014 that will result in no rate rises. This meets the promises made by Mayor Noel Playford,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Two matters will be coming before the first Ordinary Meeting that have previously vexed me on the Sunshine Coast Council. The first is a return to an annual kerbside bulk rubbish collection service. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In July 2012, whilst on the Sunshine Coast Council, I attempted to have such a service reinstated in Division 12, only to be voted down by my fellow councillors. Almost everyone who stood for election to Noosa Council was aware of the popularity of the kerbside bulk rubbish service. I know Joe Jurisevic was particularly keen to see it reinstated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe the service will help reduce illegal dumping, and it will also be of significant benefit to the elderly. Of course, the kerbside collection also encourages recycling, as items left out often find new homes before they are collected and taken to the tip.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The other issue coming before the first Ordinary Meeting is the use of Teewah Airstrip (aka Noosa North Shore Landing Ground). For too long Noosa residents, particularly those around Boreen Point, Cooroibah, Noosa Banks and Noosa North Shore, have had to contend with escalated use of this old airstrip by a commercial helicopter training business based out of Marcoola,â&#x20AC;? Cr Wellington said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Apart from the important issue of resident amenity, there are also good arguments against using an internationally significant National Park to train helicopter pilots. Even the Management Plan for the Great Sandy National Park notes that landings and overflying by aircraft may not only constitute a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;significant intrusionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for park visitors but also â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;endanger wildlife.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Under the Noosa Plan the Landing Ground is zoned Open Space Conservation. As no Material Change of Use applications have been submitted for the airstrip, the current use may be considered unlawful. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Again, this is an issue that I tried to address during my time on the Sunshine Coast Council. But attempts to deal with the problem were again stymied by a majority of southern councillors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even though the State Government has identified more than 20 alternative locales for this training activity to occur, Teewah Airstrip continues to get hammered by choppers, most of which are training overseas pilots. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am very much looking forward to the new Council grabbing this issue by its proverbial teeth. I believe the new Noosa Council will take resident amenity far more seriously than did the Sunshine Coast Council.â&#x20AC;?

Local resident Bob Miller is demanding action from the new councillors and mayor following what he claims has been years of neglect from Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC). â&#x20AC;&#x153;For the past two years we have been trying to get SCRC to do something about an extremely serious water surge problem that is occurring in the Lake Macdonald area,â&#x20AC;? Mr Miller is concerned about the water flow following land developments in Cooroy over the last five years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cooroy is surrounded by hills so any rain that falls within the catchment area flows into

Cooroy Creek, then into Six Mile Creekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s west branch, it then hits the elbow in the creek at the bottom of Liane Drive,â&#x20AC;? Mr Miller said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(The water) is held back by the raised pipeline that was installed by Link Water which forces it to break its banks and flow into Lake Macdonald estate.â&#x20AC;? Mr Miller said he and other residents have already experienced the water surge more than 10 times since the pipeline was installed, with the worst surge causing the loss of the Miller familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s horse. Mr Miller is calling on Mayor Noel Playford and his councillors to visit the site in the hope of drawing much-needed attention to the plight of local land owners. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We believe that once they have seen how serious the problem is they will do something about it,â&#x20AC;? Mr Miller said.

COOROY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE This year was a productive year for the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce with quite a lot achieved. Highlights included the release of a new Cooroy guide and Facebook page, being involved in the local advisory committee for de-amalgamation and the hugely popular Christmas in Cooroy event in the beginning of December, which saw thousands of

people visiting from across the Coast. By most reports it was a mixed year for individual businesses with some having a very successful year and others finding it a bit harder, particularly in the beginning of the year. However, generally the word is that business has picked up and there are positive signs for a prosperous 2014! It should be an exciting and interesting year with a highlight being the commencement of our new Noosa Council. There

are high expectations but with the good mix of councillors we have elected, I believe they will be able to achieve quite a lot in a short period of time. The Cooroy Chamber looks forward to working closely with the new council and local businesses to make 2014 as successful as possible. We are looking at a range of initiatives next year for local businesses, including a guest speaker in February, a networking night in April and a range of projects to do with social media and buy local campaigns.

MEMBER FOR NOOSA On March 15, 2008, elections for the Sunshine Coast Regional Council were held, the resultant Council from the Labor-forced local government amalgamations. And the much-loved genuinely local council of Noosa was lost, many felt forever. Even though that was the feeling at the time, the people of Noosa would not accept the “independent umpire’s decision” so contrived and cynical was the Local Government Reform Commission process in the eyes of angry souls right across Queensland but particularly in Noosa. So the tribes of Noosa came together with the goal in mind of getting our local council back, our local council taken away by impure means. That battle continued for years, led relentlessly by Friends of Noosa and its

tireless, single-minded spokesman, Bob Ansett. With the election of the Newman LNP Government, committed to the restoration of the democratic process, the Noosa Independence Alliance was formed under the leadership of former Noosa Mayor, Noel Playford. The NIA represented the community in overcoming all of the hurdles if Noosa Council was to rise from the ashes – so many hurdles so well met culminating in the vote on March 9, 2013, to de-amalgamate from Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the election of the new Noosa Council on November 9, 2013. What I am looking forward to most in 2014 is supporting Mayor Noel Playford and his team of councillors and council staff in Glen Elmes re-creating the Noosa MP voting Council of which we YES to dewere all so justifiably amalgamation proud and of which we have such great expectations.

An exciting year ahead beckons for CCIQ Noosa Chamber of Commerce. My board and I are still in the process of determining our strategy for the year, but we have decided where our efforts are to be concentrated.

We are keen to improve the involvement of all the local Noosa trading associations, to provide valuable networking opportunities for local business, to work closely with the local councils, to provide more value-add services and benefits to members, and to represent local business to local council, state and federal governments. My board and I recognise that we have a huge task ahead and we are keen to get started.

NOOSA HOSPITAL In 2014 Noosa Hospital will celebrate 15 years of providing services to the Noosa community. The 92bed hospital provides a full range of specialist surgical and medical services and its emergency department sees approximately 18,000 attendances each year, equalling some of the busy Brisbane metropolitan private hospital attendance rates.

Noosa Hospital Acting Chief Executive Officer Simon Rodger believes the new facilities at Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital at Kawana will also be a great opportunity for Noosa Hospital and the Noosa community as more specialist medical services commence on the Coast. “The new healthcare precinct at Kawana is a huge attraction for a new generation of specialists moving from Brisbane and already we have had discussions with some of these doctors about extending their practice to Noosa Hospital where they can consult and operate from,” Mr Rodger said. “We are going to have more specialists and services on the Coast than ever before. They will be looking to provide services right across the catchment, including Noosa, preventing the need for people to travel to Brisbane for their healthcare.” In preparation for a busy year Noosa Hospital is currently re-developing the front reception area and will shortly move its pain rehabilitation service, currently offsite, into the hospital where it will be able to better utilise the existing hydrotherapy pool and gymnasium. The continual complimentary feedback from patients for Noosa Hospital’s warm, friendly and professional approach to treatment is a source of great pride among staff, who feel this also aids patient recovery.

Noosa Chorale performing its popular Wassail concert in 2013

NOOSA CHORALE Noosa Chorale will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2014.

Since 1994 it has staged 46 concerts, including most of the major classical choral works. It has also staged two concerts of operatic highlights, two concerts of modern pop music and seven Wassails. To celebrate its anniversary the Chorale will sing The Messiah on May 18. The Messiah was the first work that the Chorale sang under the direction of Leonard Spira OAM. Following this retrospective mood, the Chorale will stage a Gala Concert of Favourites from the Past 20 Years on October 19. The Chorale loves to get involved in community events, such as singing on Australia Day, Anzac Day and at the Hastings Street Carols. As a community choir, it is extremely grateful to the Community Bendigo Bank at Tewantin which has sponsored the Chorale since 2007. The Chorale is always looking for ways to challenge itself and bringing audiences exciting new experiences of choral music such as its performance of The Armed Man, with a synchronised video on a large screen behind the choir in 2012. Under the inspired leadership of musical director, Adrian King, and President, John Davies, the Chorale will continue to delight audiences with familiar works and introduce some brilliant lesser known works.

The tourism industry is Noosa’s largest industry and has grown to contribute over $900 million to the local Noosa economy. In 2014 Tourism Noosa will aim to continue to grow this figure to ensure we retain and build local jobs.

Some key actions during 2014 include: • Reinforcing Noosa as the event capital of Queensland; • Focusing on our specific target marketing into Noosa’s key markets of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and key international markets; • Continuing to build community engagement and in particular increasing the level of customer service provided in Noosa via the Welcome to Noosa program. I and all of the team at Tourism Noosa look forward to working with everyone in Noosa to achieve these results in 2014!

COAST GUARD NOOSA There are a few things that Coast Guard Noosa dearly wishes for from our boaties in 2014:

• Vessels properly equipped with safety equipment; • All boats travelling through the bar calling in with our radio operator and logging on and off; • Making use of the courses Coast Guard conducts to enhance safety, eg basic seamanship, MROCP course for VHF radio, First Aid and CPR, bar crossing and navigation; • Most importantly, we would like to see more of the community enjoying the benefits of Associate membership. We will also provide marine and safety information and training so that our local boating community enjoys our waterways safely. Next year we will continue with our fundraising for the $1 million we will need in seven years’ time for a replacement vessel. We have some exciting ideas for raising what is a very large sum of money and we will be telling the Noosa community about them throughout the year. We would like to thank the community for its outstanding support for our organisation and we wish everyone a very happy and successful 2014. HOLDEN’S WOES The former Labor candidate for Wide Bay, Lucy Stanton, in her recent cant on Holden’s woes is typical of a rusted-on, ticket-waving member of the Labor Party. Blame everyone else, especially the Coalition, for Australia’s woes but never the Labor Party or their financial backers, the union movement. Some sympathy must be given to those who lose their livelihoods at Holden and associated industries. However, the demise of their industry can only be blamed on their own greed, Labor’s disastrous industry-killing carbon tax and especially the Labor Party for their gross incompetency. It is a bit late to say this disaster could have been avoided, had the then Labor Minister exercised his power to stop the excessive union wage demands. It is also a bit late to say this disaster could have been easily managed by throwing another billion or two at Holden. Another billion or two of borrowed money taken from the bottomless ATM of the public purse, a billion or two of taxpayers’ money that could have built schools or a hospital. It is too late to say this disaster could have been avoided, had Gillard not lied when she said “there will be NO carbon tax in a Government I lead”. NO FAITH I wish Noosa a Happy New Year but have no faith in council leadership; a retirement village without adequate infrastructure will create problems. How ironic, or should I say clever, NBA President and Free Noosa supporter Greg Reddaway should be commenting on how the community can foster local business. Though they will be countenanced by the NPA executive, it’s amazing how his suggestions have mirrored True Blue Noosa’s policy. Perhaps Greg could also explain the relevance of Noosa Biosphere Association. I understand the final stages of transition were not publicised because there’s been a lot of strife and turmoil that the mayor did want reported.

FUTILE TAX The carbon tax serves no purpose and needs to be abolished as soon as possible. Climate alarmists are deluded if they think CO2 drives the global climate. It does not. CO2 is the essential component of the carbon cycle. Plants need CO2 for photosynthesis and will thrive if its concentration increases. Countries who impose carbon taxes risk damaging their economies for no scientific reason. Countries who think they can derive base load power via solar and wind are preparing their citizens for the dark ages. When the wind doesn’t blow the current doesn’t flow.

A Einstein in his 1917 paper, ‘The Quantum Theory of Radiation’, clarified the processes involved at the molecular level for the emission and absorption of radiation by matter. Contrary to the claims by climate alarmists such as Steve Hall (NT December 12) CO2 does not trap heat. It absorbs and emits certain photons but does not store them. If it did we would expect to find a “hot spot” high over the tropics where the concentration of CO2 is greatest. However, extensive measurements by weather balloons and radiosondes show no hot spot and a steady decrease of temperature with altitude. The atmosphere is not heated by CO2. The radiation from CO2 does not increase the temperature of the land or the oceans. Increasing concentrations of CO2 will have a cooling effect on the Earth because the intensity of the incoming solar infrared radiation will be reduced.

ATTACKING THE MAN Ah, the contrast! On the letters page of December 19, we have two respectful, factual, well-reasoned letters from climate realists, followed by a third from Colin Bond. His letter not only contains errors of fact but, in a classic case of attacking the man, attempts to ridicule Tim Flannery. For Mr Bond’s benefit, Tim Flannery is not an anthropologist who specialises in kangaroos. The “anthropo” part of that word denotes humans, just as it does in anthropogenic climate change. Flannery is a mammalogist and palaeontologist. And contrary to what you might expect, some palaeontologists know a lot about climate change because they study ancient environments. The Climate Commission was a public outreach body, and Flannery was appointed Chief Commissioner, not because he is a climate scientist, but because of his abilities as a science communicator. It’s not an unusual situation. Mitchell Hooke, until recently the CEO of the Minerals Council of Australia, has a background in rural science – nothing to do with mining. Both leaders would have sensibly relied on the advice of their expert colleagues for the positions they advocated. The Climate Commission had a Science Advisory Panel consisting of eight acknowledged climate experts. Mr Bond’s “97 per cent of scientists” actually refers to a survey of published climate papers (not scientists) that expressed a position on human caused global warming. It found that 97 per cent of those papers agree that global warming is happening and we are the cause. Tim Flannery was not among the authors of those papers. He does not research current climate change, but like all reasonable scientists, I expect he trusts the scientific process and respects the findings of those scientists who do.

FACING EXTINCTION In relation to climate change, Colin Bond (NT Dec 19) says that the “science is not settled, especially when one of the 97 per cent of scientists is Tim Flannery” who Bond identifies as a kangaroo expert. Flannery has never claimed to be one of the 97 per cent of climate specialists who found that, for all intents and purposes, the science HAS been settled. This was in the most recent United Nation’s climate change assessment. Bond also says “I would rather trust Mother Nature to look after herself than 97 per cent of unqualified and self-professed scientists on climate change”. First, these are fully qualified climate scientists recognised by the UN. Secondly, there’s a fatal flaw in Bond’s argument. Mother Nature will look after herself but that doesn’t necessarily include the survival of the human race. Mother Nature isn’t bothered about the fate of this destructive species and we could easily become one amongst the many species that nature or ourselves have caused to become extinct. When one examines the weather and resource trends, it’s difficult not to see the human race having enormous problems in a couple of generation’s time.

FACTS NOT OPINIONS Your correspondents (NT Dec 19) denigrating John Turner have no idea who they’re tackling. John, a leading physics educator, now retired, is more than capable of assessing the teaching of the physics of the greenhouse effect. John Turner’s statements were facts rather than opinions – and there is a huge difference. Science is based on facts; it is religion that is based on beliefs. As for the 97 per cent “consensus” among scientists, it has been shown that this figure was actually based on only 41 out of some 12,000 responses (Legates et al 2013). Should your correspondents genuinely seek solace in numbers, they should consider that in the largest effort to date to document global warming dissent in the scientific community, 31,486 Americans with university degrees in science (including 9,029 PhD, 7,157 MSc, 2,586 MD and DVM, and 12,714 BSc or equivalent) have signed a Global Warming Petition Project stating: “the human-caused global warming hypothesis is without scientific validity.” Anyway, even if the 97 per cent figure were correct, a consensus does not prove that a hypothesis is proven – just look at the medical consensus that peptic ulcers were caused by stress; it took two researchers in Perth recently, to demonstrate that the cause is bacterial. Images of water droplets (clouds) emanating from cooling towers do not illustrate carbon dioxide emissions. This is a portrayal commonly used to mislead the gullible public. To say that the atmosphere “absolutely behaves in an analogous way to a greenhouse” again shows a deplorable ignorance of science. Which

The fact that there has been no detectable increase in the global atmospheric temperature in the last 17 years shows that the models the IPCC relies on for its catastrophic predictions have been proven to be wrong because they did not predict this prolonged pause which has occurred in spite of the continuing increase in atmospheric CO2. Late last century’s correlation of the global temperature with CO2 concentration gave some credibility to the hypothesis that the two were related, but just as correla-

tion does not prove causation, lack of correlation certainly disproves it. There are recent predictions by eminent scientists that the weakness of the current solar cycle (#24) is likely to lead to an extended period of global cooling (eg Landscheidt, 2003 “New Little Ice Age Instead of Global Warming”). After all, virtually all the heat that keeps the earth thriving comes from the sun – a fact ignored in most “climate change” discussions. Global cooling will probably be the next scary catastrophe, just as it was in the 1970s.

BUILDING THE VISION I would like to congratulate Greg Reddaway on his well written and well thought out article in today’s Noosa Today under the heading “Noosa – what next”. Michael Gloster had a vision for Noosa, this is Noosa being the basis of the model for a sustainable area which can be looked at and used throughout the world. We now have a chance for our own Noosa Council and to start work on this. We have had four-plus years of a different council model that we did not like and we now have the opportunity to start work on a model we do like and which can set an example. I get sick of people who feel that prosperity and employment can only happen with more development such as that planned for Noosa on Weyb”. Any employment the proposed model of this development could produce would be of a temporary nature. Not of much value to Noosa but good for putting money into the pocket of the developer. This is yesterday’s thinking. Noosa must do much better and must do much better if Noosa is to prosper and remain relevant. Greg has done some lateral thinking and has set out a number of ideas for us to start thinking hard about. Noosa has the foundations already in place to make many of Greg’s ideas happen. We should be making better use of what nature has provided us with. How about the developer redesigning the Lake Weyba area as a world-class wildlife sanctuary and study centre? This area would be ideal with its abundance of bird, fish and other animal life as well as its aboriginal history. It would provide the developer and Noosa with an infinite income. Look at what has been done

Two different courses are running throughout January - the Funsail program for kids aged seven to 17, and the

Tackers course, specifically for six to 12 year olds. Funsail will run from 10am to 4pm, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, on weeks beginning January 6, 13 and 20. The course follows Yachting Australia’s Start Sailing levels 1 and 2 and is run in three boat types - vagabonds, lasers and sabots - which cater to all ages and skill stages. Each day is $65 and includes

Pensioner rates rebate Noosa Transfer Manager Peter Franks is urging eligible pensioners to make sure they have returned their consent form to ensure their pensioner rate rebate is included in their Noosa Council rates notice to be issued in January.

“Centrelink has advised they are unable to provide existing customer concession entitlement information to Noosa Council without the direct consent of the customer, and without this information we are unable to determine pensioner rates concession eligibility,” Mr Franks said. “Sunshine Coast Council recently sent a letter and form to all Noosa property owners who are eligible for pensioner rate concessions. “There are still well over a thousand eligible ratepayers who have not returned their form. “If you did not receive this information please contact Council on 5475 7542 immediately to ensure you are sent the form and can return it in time to receive the pensioner rebate on your rates notice.”

The retune is coming! The retune is coming to Peregian Beach and Point Arkwright on January 23, as the final step in Australia’s move to digital-only TV.

Following the switch to digital-only TV, ABC and SCA will be changing frequencies. Viewers in Peregian Beach and Point Arkwright will need to retune their digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder to find the channels that have moved.

The move of the channels will free up space on the broadcasting spectrum so that it can be used for new services, such as mobile broadband. Just like the switch to digital-only TV, the retune is being carefully planned to make sure the change is as easy as possible. The process of retuning your TV will vary between models, so refer to the systems menu or user manual for instructions.

The name suggests something perky and youthful and that’s sure how it looks with its high stance, stumpy tail and bug-like front lights. The Juke is called a Sports Utility Vehicle and one of the three models available actually has all-wheel drive, but under its funky exterior it’s really a jacked-up runabout that should catch the eyes of young city dwellers. Research reveals shock statistics The peak motoring body found only 250 cars out of 600 cars reviewed by the RACQ during safety certificate inspections passed on first view. RACQ Technical Researcher Russell Manning said the high fail rate underscored the need for motorists to regularly inspect their cars for safety faults. “It’s the responsibility of all motorists to ensure their car is safe and roadworthy every time they get behind the wheel,” he said. Golden Breed is on the nose in Noosa in 2014 - but in a good way!

The classic surf brand from the 1960s has nearly half a century of tradition behind it, and a tradition for the Golden Breed Noserider Pro dating back 15 years. Back in the early years – early for the festival and early for GB’s dramatic rejuvenation in Australia under Nick Van Der Merwe – Golden Breed and the festival management got together to reinvent a contest concept originally created by Californian Tom Morey in 1965. The Tom Morey Invitational was the world’s first professional surfing contest and the world’s first noserider, with surfers scoring points only when riding the nose with both feet in front of a line of tape on their boards. Some surfers resorted to all kinds of trickery to win the $1500 cash, like fixing bricks and other weights to the back of their boards, but the event was won fair and square by diminutive Mickey Munoz, who was so slight that he had stunt doubled for Gidget in the Hollywood movie. When the Noosa Festival and GoldBritain’s James Parry nose stalls by dragging a foot in the wave.

en Breed brought back the Noserider in 2000, it was an immediate hit, attracting the world’s best tip riders, including California’s Joel Tudor, Alex Knost and CJ Nelson and locals of the calibre of Jai Lee, Josh Constable, Brett White and Matt Cuddihy. Over the years we have seen incredible performances, with surfers like California’s Christian Wach and locals Harrison Roach and Zye Norris raising the bar to incredible heights. In 2014 expect to see even more ridiculously long noserides, with a big international field looking to knock the locals off their perches…literally. The field is open to men and women, with world ISA junior champion Honolua Blomfield of Hawaii already throwing her hat in the ring. THE RIDE OF THEIR LIVES Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing, presented by Jeep, is once again proud to be hosting the Sunshine Coast branch of the Disabled Surfing Association for an assisted surf day on Saturday, March 8. The DSA provides se-

verely handicapped people of all ages with the opportunity to experience the thrill of riding a wave in complete safety. If you spent your life confined to a wheelchair or restricted in movement in other ways, can you imagine the exhilaration of zooming shoreward on a surfboard for the very first time, the salt spray in your face and a huge smile on your face! Surfers often talk about “sharing the stoke”, but DSA surf days put those words into action, and for surfer volunteers, the rewards are in that sea of smiling faces. The Disabled Surfing Association surf day will be held from midday on March 8 with Noosa Malibu Club once again providing assistance and lunch for participants. Come along and help out, or just observe what a wonderful, spirit-lifting job the DSA does.

on the patrolled beaches,” he said. Noosa Education Manager Greg McLaughlin said training was progressing and he was looking forward to continuing surf education programs with local schools. It has been a week of mixed emotions for members of the Noosa club. First of all, club mate Rowan Cunningham, former patrolman and member of the highly successful U19 junior boat crew, returned home safely after an overseas tour of duty with the Australian Army. He served his community on the sands of Noosa and his country on the sands of Afghanistan. Welcome home, Digger, welcome home. On a sadder note tributes are pouring in for Noosa Surf Club Old Boys John Ford and Dan Hatten. John, who was appointed Club Administrator in 1984 by former club President John Jenkins, is credited as being the first member to take the club into the world of business. Dan was Chief Instructor of Noosa and Head Lifeguard for Noosa Shire Council, in the late 1980s. Both respected club mates are gone but not forgotten.

Around the greens NOOSA HEADS BOWLS CLUB The Noosa Heads Bowls Club Revolution is back for 2014. The Open Pairs event will be held on the first Monday of each month, commencing on February 3. With strong competition and a $1500 prize pool, the cream of Coast bowlers will again be attracted to the contest which proved to be such a winner last year. The format is two games of 16 ends, with first-round winners to play each other in the afternoon for the major prize. There are also good prizes for the winners and runners-up in the losers pool.
