 More cabs and a new bus route set to ease travel...

Taxi licence boost AN INCREASE in taxi licences in Pakenham could see more taxis across the region. Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder announced that two conventional taxi-cab licences had been offered in the Pakenham taxi-cab zone. “Pakenham already has four conventional and three wheelchair accessible taxis on the road, and the granting of these additional licences will bolster that figure even further,” he said. “The approval of these 12-month licences will ensure that both conventional and wheelchair accessible taxis are available in areas that need them most.” Mr Mulder said the reforms would open up the industry and create more competition. “For example, taxis in re-

gional and country areas no longer need to carry the yellow livery, meaning that there is less regulatory burden to comply with,” he said. “In September, we also reintroduced taxi advertising in Victoria for the first time in nearly 20 years.” On the Pakenham-Gazette Facebook page, residents welcomed the news. “More taxis are certainly needed,” Tara commented. “Security at the local pub was nice enough to give my partner a lift home after his Christmas party. “And everything is definitely not in walking distance for the elderly or physically impaired or anyone at night time.” Mr Mulder said he had granted the licences based on an identified need in the community. The Pakenham licences are

being offered for a fixed period of 12 months subject to transitioning into a new licence release process in 2014. Over the Christmas break, a new bus route between Pakenham and Cardinia Road railway stations was also announced which is set to improve public transport options from Australia Day. Routes 924 and 928 will be merged to form new route 928 connecting the two stations which will decrease journey times and expand the bus network north of Pakenham station. Cardinia Road station will now have two bus routes, one north and one south of the railway. Bass MP Ken Smith said that he had continually advocated for improved public transport in and around Pakenham. Continued page 11

A CHRISTMAS raffle was an early gift for the Hamshere family. The combined Inner Wheel and Rotary clubs of Pakenham ran the Christmas Trailer raffle and it was drawn by the presidents of both clubs, Jan Ahern and Roger Thornton on 20 December. The very excited winner of the trailer and all its contents, Rob Hamshere bought the winning ticket when the trailer was at the Heritage

Sales in fast lane By DANIELLE GALVIN A HUGE boat, bike, caravan and car complex with multiple dealers will open in Pakenham this weekend. The grand opening of Car Mega Mart in the SouthEast Business Park will take place this Saturday and Sunday. Peter Caldwell from the business development team at Car Mega Mart said the site would be a one-stop-shop for customers for used cars, boats and motorhomes. He said there would be hundreds of

cars, boats and motorhomes on site. “There are loads of independent dealers, an on-site finance office and the Cadillac Café which will all be open for business to help the local community by providing a one-stop shop for local and regional customers who use the freeway regularly,” Mr Caldwell said. “There will be hundreds of used cars on site, giving the local customers a much greater choice when it comes to choosing their next car.” There will also be plenty of giveaways and activities for the kids includ-

Two arrested over drugs and firearm find after police stop

ing fuel vouchers, automotive products, car servicing, face painting and fire trucks. Live music, jumping castles, a free sausage sizzle and soft drink all day will keep the kids entertained. Several high profile AFL and A League players will also be making appearances for the grand opening celebrations. Car Mega Mart is located at South East Boulevard and Commercial Drive in Pakenham.

A PAKENHAM woman was arrested after a routine intercept uncovered a firearm, ammunition and drugs. Police stopped a black Yamaha motorcycle on the corner of Heatherton Road and Douglas Street, Noble Park, around 12.40am on Wednesday. A search of the male rider and female passenger uncovered the firearm, ammunition and a small amount of drugs.

Result brings dux joy

Police allege the motorcycle was also displaying false number plates. Both were arrested at the scene and taken back to Dandenong police station. The 28-year-old Noble Park man and the 24-year-old Pakenham woman are currently assisting police with their inquiries. The motorcycle was also impounded under hoon legislation.

By NICOLE WILLIAMS RESIDENTS can expect speed restrictions and delays as works start on the duplication of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road. Minister for Roads Terry Mulder joined City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett and VicRoads workers on Tuesday at the site to launch the start of the road works. Mr Mulder said the road currently carried around 29,000 vehicles each day and had been the site of 61 casualty crashes in the past five years. “This has been a long time coming,” he said. “There has been a lot of development along this section of road. This will get 29,000 vehicles flowing and flowing smoothly.”

Cr Ablett said the area was in huge need of the upgrade, with 50 families moving into Casey each week. “That brings a huge amount of traffic here also, so it will be good to get vehicles moving and save lives,” he said. Although there would be delays for motorists, Mr Mulder said they were trying to work with residents. “We want to work as best as we can with residents to get the best possible outcome,” he said. “There will be speed restrictions and delays. Motorists also need to be respectful of workers on the side of the road.” The $49 million project will expand and upgrade Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road to a two and three-lane road for a 3.5 ki-

lometre stretch between Pound Road and Thompson Road. “The result will be safer and less congested for drivers, with three lanes each way between Ormond Road and Glasscocks Road, and two lanes each way for the other sections between Pound Road and Thompson Road,” Mr Mulder said. “The upgrade of intersections as Ormond Road and Glasscocks Road, and new traffic signals at Rosebank Drive will also help people get to residential and commercial areas more safely and easily.” The project will also include improved pedestrian crossings and shared access paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Work on the project is expected to be completed by late 2015.

Graffiti trip a bad sign I HAVE been looking at the City of Casey travel registration and noticed that councillor Wayne Smith has spent more than $32,000 on travel over the period he has been a councillor. My question is what benefit have we the ratepayers recieved by all of this travel from 2002 untill now? I also recall Cr Aziz complianed about graffiti on the overpass rail bridge on the Cranbourne - Narre Warren Road in 2013, and I noticed in the travel documents that Cr Smith went on two trips to investigate graffiti. Has Cr Smith ever told Cr Aziz that he went on these trips back in 2004 and 2008? Cr Smith might be able to give Cr Aziz some advice on how to clean the graffiti off the overpass bridge. To all councillors, we voted you into council to be accountable and transparent with ratepayers’ funds, junkets not included. Rex Flannery, Narre Warren South.

WHILST I agree that Casey Council’s method of dealing with public questions is completely out of order and should be presented to councilors unabridged, it seems to be a matter of democracy not ‘political correctness’. Political correctness is endemic throughout the Western world! To infer that it does not exist is not only ridiculous but can be extremely detrimental to oneself and organisations. One has to be very careful in regard to negative comments made in public, in written or spoken word. Religious intolerance is also a reality. We live in a country that is loosely described as Christian and in a great many instances apart from weddings, christenings, funerals, Xmas and Easter, a great many Australians seem to be apathetic where religion is concerned. This not the case in some European countries where loose immigration policies have resulted in large numbers of religious extremists who have no regard for the beliefs of the host countries and live in enclaves where their law takes president over that of their adopted country. Political correctness has been a significant factor in the problems that are fast becoming intolerable in Europe! Wake up Australia! Graham Edgar, Berwick.

Ugly tree change AS WAS agreed with the Casey Council at the meeting on 17 July 2012 regarding the street trees, in particular ones in Coowarra Way, Coolong Avenue, Boree Court and Theodore Terrace, it was agreed that a number of trees would be removed and property line clearance would be undertaken. I agree that much of this work has been done, although very few trees were removed. However, these large gums that remain (forest trees) were nice trees in the wrong place. The trimming of the trees has now left us with ugly misshapen trees, still dropping copious amounts of leaves and bark, tree roots breaking up footpaths and impossible nature strips on which to grow any grass on. I have one of these particular trees on my nature strip that I would like to have removed completely. I would be happy to level and replace the grass on the nature strip and plant a suitable tree at my own expense. I have written to Mr Griffin at Casey Council. I wonder what sort of reply I will get to my request. Not holding my breath. Val Stephensson, Berwick.

Have you made any New Year’s resolutions for 2014? Kate Sunderland: Yes, leave the past behind, stay away from negative people, and move on to bigger and better things. Judie Hedrick: Yes, not to make a New Year’s resolutions.

Say no to booze violence IN REGARD to alcohol fuelled violence, it is encouraging to note that there is a move afoot to close venues earlier. It is also encouraging to note that alcohol is not being displayed on the apparel of the Australian Test cricket team. Next it will be encouraging to see reduced advertising of alcohol at sporting venues in particular. Yes we can do something to reduce alcohol fuelled violence, we can lessen the advertising that is designed to encourage the use of alcohol. Yes, we can do it! Let’s save lives and reduce alcohol fuelled violence. Yes, we can do it! Ron Roberts, Cranbourne.

Begging for a shed THIS is a begging letter. This is the first time, I don’t know what else to do. It’s not for more, it’s for help to get a men’s shed up and running in Cranbourne.

Ray’s say

We have been butting heads with Casey Council for three years, getting nowhere. Please can these Rotary, Lions, Apex or any other organisation help? The council say we will build a new building. When, when, when? They have a building we can use until when, when when? But they say they are nothing to do with. The Apex building was for the community but that is under some committee that no one knows about, it can’t be used. I call on all men in Cranbourne to e-mail the council, tell them we want a men’s shed. If you haven’t got a computer, get your grandkids to do it for you. William Williams, Cranbourne West.

Stop and listen IT SEEMS again that Casey Council doesn’t listen to the ratepayers. On 12 December 2013 workers removed a concrete bus stop on Pound Road, Hampton Park, and replaced it with a glass bus stop. How long before the glass is all smashed? D. Gardner, Hampton Park.

School’s graceful moves students received a 100 per cent pass rate, but not only this, all KGD students received a score of highly commended or honours, being the two highest marks awarded for this level. A number of KGD students also recently competed in local dance competitions, where many prizes were awarded. KGD has a wide

curriculum on offer, as not only are they a dance school, they are a school of ‘performing arts’ and their aim is to educate and train young performers to be ‘all-rounders’, so that if they ever continue down the pathway into the entertainment industry, they will be very accomplished, versatile performers. Having maintained an extensive and successful career in the performing arts herself, Karlie knows that in order to be successful in the world of performing arts, a strong technique in classical ballet needs to be employed. Therefore KGD places

special focus on classical ballet in the course of a young dancer’s training, in order to best equip them for the demands of the professional world. Karlie has carefully hand-picked each member of the KGD teaching faculty and each has been selected not only for their ability to demonstrate a high standard themselves, but also for their ability to encourage and support each and every student in a correct manner. Come and see for yourself what their studio has to offer. Call Karlie on 0438 278 371 or email info@kgdancers. com today.

KARLIE Grace Dancers School of Performing Arts has certainly had a very busy and productive year. The year 2013 saw them move to their very own brandnew, purpose-built premises in Berwick, which includes three professional standard studios, equipped with fully sprung floors, split systems and many other features. The students have been very happy to finally have a place to call their own, not to mention their dancing has simply thrived since. In 2013, many dedicated students sat for their Cecchetti Ballet examinations and all

WHEN Cranbourne teenager Charlee was born, her mother was told she would never walk. But limits are there to be broken, and 13-year-old Charlee, who suffers from hypotonia (low muscle tone) and an intellectual disability, is proof after not only learning to walk but also to dance. Charlee was awarded a 10-year service award last year at Cathy-Lea Dance Music and Drama Works, based in Narre Warren, and Charlee’s mum Lisa Harris can’t speak highly enough of the influence the dance school has had on her daughter’s life. “She needed something to build up muscle tone, but she wasn’t able to play sport, and I happened to come across an ad for Cathy-Lea’s dance school,” Lisa said. “When I rang Cathy, she told me that she had been thinking about starting up a special needs class at the school.” Charlee was a driving influence in establishing the special needs class at Cathy-Lea, which, a decade later, is a pivotal part of the school’s program. Lisa said dancing had helped Charlee in so many ways, not only in allowing her to adjust to her muscle tone but just as importantly enabled her to make close friends and be part of an environment where she

was welcomed with open arms. “It’s more than just dance, it’s the chance for Charlee to dance with a group of kids and to be accepted by the community,” she said. “She’s really made to be part it. A good example is during the endof-year dance concert with all the other students, she is 100 per cent part of the Cathy Lee community. “And for me, it’s lovely to see kids interact with Charlee.” Charlee, who has flourished under the tutelage of the dance teachers at Cathy-Lea, couldn’t contain her excitement when she heard she would be receiving the 10-year service award. “What little kid doesn’t love dressing up with full make-up,” Lisa said. “It’s every little kid’s dream to be on stage.” Director Cathy-Lea Smith is passionate about her special needs dance classes and said she had marvelled at Charlee’s development over the years. “When she was little, Lisa was told by specialists that Charlee would never walk or talk and here she is now winning a trophy for dancing for 10 years in a dance school!” Cathy-Lea said. “It means a lot to them, and I think it is inspirational to other parents of children with disabilities.”

GHB chemical seized POLICE searched two Casey homes recently and an industrial chemical used for the manufacturing of GHB was found. Five men and one woman were arrested after police executed search warrants at homes in Debanne Court, Narre Warren, and Warana Drive, Hampton Park, about 7.25pm on Tuesday 31 December. Police seized a small quantity of what was believed to be an industrial solvent. The chemical was believed to be stolen from a burglary at a Cheltenham factory in November. Investigators have been told the break-in occurred sometime between Friday 8 and Tuesday 12 November, with the offenders allegedly stealing several drums containing an industrial solvent.

The industrial solvent, if ingested by a person, can potentially have a similar effect as GHB. Senior Sergeant Jamie Jack said that the disruption that this had caused to potential manufacturing of illicit substances was a win for local police. “The substances used in the manufacture of GHB are extremely dangerous,” he said. “Any time that we disrupt the manufacture of this substance is potentially a number of lives saved.” A 26-year-old Hampton Park man has been charged with trafficking and will face court at a later date. The other five people arrested were released, pending further inquiries.

Local MP Jason Wood and Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired founder Alan Lachman in Canberra. 112597 recommence on the specialist primary school. “Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired is now being built at a very fast pace after receiving the $1.5 million of funding on Thursday 12 December,” Mr Lachman said. “The support we have received from Jason Wood, Senator Mitch Fifield and Prime

Minister Tony Abbott has been formidable and greatly reflects the need for a facility like Insight Education Centre in the area and across Victoria.” Insight is the realisation of a dream for Mr Lachman, along with his family, whose vision impaired daughter can receive the education she needs in a supportive environment.

Roped in for Everest climb BY BRIDGET COOK A GROUP of fitness fanatics is going to the end of the earth to support a Berwick woman in her plight to raise awareness and money for a rare brain disease. CrossFit members from Ultimate Fitness Training (UFT) in Berwick have set themselves a challenge to collectively complete 8848 metres of rope climbs, the equivalent to climbing to the peak of Mount Everest. The Rope Climbs to Everest event will take place on Saturday 18 January. UFT owner Denee Lalouette decided to organise the fundraising event to support Berwick mother Melissa Kolbeck who he has been voluntarily training for her own challenge later this year. Ms Kolbeck is walking from Melbourne to Sydney in April in memory of a six-year-old boy named Talin who died of a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), which is a type of brain tumour. The aim of the walk is to raise awareness about DIPG while also supporting two charities - The Cure Starts Now and Bear Cottage. Mr Lalouette said members

Top from left, Troy Griffiths, Denee Lalouette, Rob Godfrey, Sean Fitzpatrick, bottom, Josh King, Holly-Louise Toth, Erin Hughes and Renee Caswell have signed up for the Rope Climbs to Everest event to support Melissa Kolbeck, front, in her challenge. were inspired by Ms Kolbeck and wanted to do what they could to support her cause. “So many of us have seen her work so hard for the past six months or so, in order to get herself to the physical levels required to achieve such a massive goal,” he said. “Our plan was to do something really big, to help raise awareness for Mel and her campaign for DIPG. “Because Mel went for something so extreme, we decided to do the same and that’s

where the Rope Climbs to Everest idea came about.” Mr Lalouette said they have started taking registrations for the event, but anyone was welcome to join in to help complete the task at hand and raise money. “Anyone can get involved,” he said. To find our more or register your interest in getting involved email info@ultimateft.com.au or call 9769 3137. To find our more visit www. touchedbytalin.com.

Taxi licences give transport boost From page 1. Mr Mulder said that since Cardinia Road station opened in April 2012, it had been very popular. “Currently, there is limited room available for buses to turn into Station Street over the Main Street level crossing. This is a major safety concern,” Mr Mulder said.

Routes 926 and 928 will operate every 60 minutes from about 5.30am to 10pm, with extra services on route 926 during peak periods to connect with trains at Cardinia Road from 5.45am to 7am and 6pm to 8pm. Visitors to the Gazette Facebook page had differing views on the new bus routes. Laura posted that she walks

everywhere, and that Pakenham has all of the “required services within walking distance” of each estate. “A bus service from Pakenham to Cranbourne would be good to see,” Karen commented. “One that goes via the town of Cardinia, even a low use service of one a few times a day.”

THE STARS are coming to Casey this week for a big announcement. ARIA award-winning singer Guy Sebastian and comedian Ben Price will attend an event on Friday to announce the winning design for the $125 million Casey Cultural Precinct in Narre Warren. City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett said he was looking forward to the event. “A tremendous amount of work has been done in the last six months to ensure the Casey Cultural Precinct will meet the needs and aspirations of the community and delivers upon the vision to be an inviting central heart for the community that celebrates participation, belonging and civic pride,” he said. “So, come along on 10 January to find out which team will design the precinct, view the winning design and be entertained by both Guy Sebastian and Ben Price.” Four architectural design teams; Lyons and Ashton Raggatt McDougall (ARM); Denton Corker Marshall; FrancisJones Morehen Thorp and John Wardle Architects have developed concept designs for the precinct. The $125 million Casey Cultural Precinct will comprise an 800-seat regional theatre, multi-purpose exhibition space, regional art gallery, new community library, community meeting rooms, civic centre and community plaza. Project ambassador and comedian, Ben Price, has also portrayed Sean Connery, Homer Simpson, Tom Cruise

Guy Sebastian will appear at the design announcement on Friday. 112548 and a host of other celebrities in a video which shows them commenting about the City of Casey’s future community, cultural and civic precinct. “The Casey Cultural Precinct will be a progressive, innovative and futuristic precinct which harnesses emerging technologies and digital art forms,” Cr Ablett said. “To start building on this digital element and in recognition that an increasing number of people prefer to access information online, council has developed a website for the project and will post regular videos

to share updates and key milestones with the community.” The Casey Cultural Precinct is expected to open to the community mid-2017. For more information about the project or to view a video invite from project ambassador Ben Price (in character as Arnold Schwarzenegger) visit the Casey Cultural Precinct website at www.caseyculturalprecinct. com.au. The announcement will take place at 1pm on Friday 10 January outside the City of Casey Civic Centre, Magid Drive, Narre Warren.

CONSTRUCTION on Victoria’s only primary school for the blind and vision impaired in Casey received a $1.5 million Christmas present. The funding was a September election promise by local MP Jason Wood and Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired founder Alan Lachman wanted to ensure the funding was received and construction on the facility continued. Due to a delay in registration and a blowout in costs, Insight had to pause construction on the Berwick facility while looking for new funds to pay the construction company, putting the 2014 opening at risk. Mr Lachman travelled to Canberra in November and Mr Wood intervened to secure a meeting with Senator Mitch Fifield MP, who helped rush the payment through and have it signed off by Prime Minister Tony Abbott. “I am extremely proud to be a part of building the Insight school dedicated to the blind and vision impaired in Victoria with Mr Lachman,” Mr Wood said. “Thanks to Senator Fifield’s hard work with the Prime Ministerial Office and Mr Lachman’s tenacity, we can now proudly say that La Trobe will be the first to house Victoria’s only education facility for the blind and vision impaired.” Mr Lachman said the funding had allowed construction to

MEBOURNE Cup winning jockeys Glen Boss and Damien Oliver will team up when the Jockeys take on the Racing All Stars in the National Jockey’s Trust T20 cricket match at Casey Fields on Monday. The brain-child of jockey Jason Benbow, the event enters its second year with the purpose of raising awareness of the important role the NJT plays in the industry... at the same time raising funds and having a great community day out. A staggering 500 names adorn a memorial statue at Caulfield Racecourse, commemorating those who have paid the ultimate price in riding accidents around Australia. And while most people have phobias that can be neatly tucked away, it’s difficult for jockeys when the signs of danger are eminently prevalent. “There’s not many jobs where you go to work and have two ambulances follow you around,” Benbow said. “It’s something we don’t really think or talk about too much but we definitely take risks. “We enjoy what we do and it’s an exciting sport to be a part of... but there is an element of danger.” The NJT supports individuals and families, not just those affected by a fatal tragedy but also the impact of

career ending injuries for jockeys. Highlighting this is the fact that the two teams, the Jockeys, coached by former Sydney Thunder coach Shane Duff, and the All Stars, coached by media personality Richard Callander, will compete for the David Taggart Perpetual Trophy. “We actually named the trophy after David to highlight that point,” Benbow said. “David got bucked off a horse at Stony Creek, broke both his ankles and has been told he will never ride again, so it’s not just about supporting families who have paid the ultimate price, it’s about supporting jockeys who are going through difficult times.” The first of the now annual T20 contests was played at Red Hill last year and ended in a tie, but Benbow is under no illusion and realises his team needs to improve if it’s to be competitive this time around. “The result probably flattered us a bit last year, the All Stars had us covered, but we’re taking it a bit more serious this time around,” he said. “Shane’s had us in the nets and blokes like Damien Oliver and Steve Arnold have been hitting the ball pretty well, but we might struggle a bit with the ball, and our fielding’s not that flash. “It’s amazing how we’re prepared to jump on a horse and ride but we’re all scared of a cricket ball.” 1112507-EP02-14

CAULFIELD racecourse took on a distinctly Pakenham feel on Saturday after a group of local owners cheered The Wingman home to victory in the $80,000 Equiano Speed Yearlings Handicap (1600m). Good mates and popular locals Brian Brady, Evan Broadbent, John Fowler, Bill Henning, Greg Marshall, Graham McCraw, Ian ‘Stinger’ Murphy, Peter Visser, Rick Tyrrell, Chris Webster and Stan Young own the eight-year-old son of Montjeu who scored a brave victory under some vigorous riding from champion hoop Damien Oliver. Watchers of TVN would have noticed Young prancing around the mounting yard like a twoyear-old on Blue Diamond day after the race, his arms held aloft like he’d just beaten Usain Bolt in the 100-metre final at the Olympics... must have had a nibble at the double-figure odds, hey Stan!

Sport WGCA Premier Division - where it stands

New pecking order By DAVID NAGEL WEST Gippsland Premier division cricket returns in a blaze of glory on Saturday as four teams look to pick the lock on Tooradin’s early season dominance. The Seagulls, the undefeated reigning champs, are facing stiff opposition from Pakenham and Merinda Park while traditional rivals Cardinia and Kooweerup are clawing to stay in the finals hunt. That leaves Emerald, Upper Beaconsfield and Pakenham Upper/ Toomuc in a battle to avoid relegation. Tooradin skipper Aaron Avery has led the way for his charges, 18 wickets and 314 runs has him ensconced as a top-three performer in both elements of the game. The WGCA’s ticking time-bomb, Tom Hussey, also looms large and provides the Seagulls with a real xfactor heading into the pointy end of the season. The grand final century maker has been getting starts, but look for him to explode as finals draw near. Pakenham opener Chris Smith has had an extraordinary start to life as a Lion and looms as the Seagulls biggest individual threat. A whopping 574 runs at an average of 95.67 accounts for 37 per cent of his teams runs... 15 per cent higher than any other player in premier division. Smith’s dominance has seen the Lions make the most runs (1547) and lose the least amount of wickets (39) in the competition. Smith’s opening partner Russ Lehman has made 13 per cent of the Lions’ runs meaning half of their overall total has come from the extreme top of the order. Lehman is also the in-form bowler in the league with 17 wickets against quality opposition in his last four outings. Merinda Park is an interesting team to assess... are last season’s runners-up a contender or pretender?

By DAVID NAGEL

Tooradin skipper Aaron Avery has been in magnificent touch with both bat and ball this season as he Picture: DONNA OATES strives to lead the Seagulls to back-to-back titles. 111237 That might seem a harsh call but a close look at its form shows there is definite cause for concern. The Cobras have failed against both Tooradin and Pakenham and have only one batsman in Danny Diwell (219) with more than 200 runs on the board. On face value, having the competitions leading wicket-taker in Jess Mathers is impressive, but 15 of his 25 wickets came in two outings against the bottom two teams in

the league. They may be shaky... but don’t write the Cobras off just yet! Cardinia and Kooweerup would seem to be a bit off the pace and their round 12 encounter will more than likely decide fourth place. The Demons defeated the Bulls in round three but, apart from that, both teams have only had success against the bottom three teams on the ladder. The Demons have lost their last four on the bounce and must rebound in upcoming games

against Tooradin and Merinda Park. The relegation battle may be decided quickly with bottom-placed Pakenham Upper/Toomuc’s opening two games against Emerald and Upper Beaconsfield. The Yabbies must win at least one of these two games to keep their slim hopes of survival alive. The Bombers and Maroons meet in what could be a belter of a contest in the final game of the season... round 14.

Ely... go to woe! By BRETT SWANSON SOUTH Australian Invader Chad Ely easily beat a top field of local guns on his way to victory in round five of the Allstars Sprintcar Championship at Nyora Raceway’s annual holiday meeting. Ely was able to marginally extend his championship points lead finishing ahead of veteran Mark Weaver and point’s challenger Matthew Reed. In the now annual event, the Sprintcar Allstars made their post-Christmas trek to the pacey Gippsland speed-bowl to thrilled a large crowd of holiday guests. Starting from pole-position Ely was unstoppable, leading every one of the 30 laps as Weaver and Reed battled hard for second. Behind the top three came Kerang’s Zac Farrer, American Geoff Ensign, Simpson’s Phil Lock, Kyneton’s Mick Cunningham, Drouin’s defending series champion Brad Foster and the Gisborne pairing of former series champs Paul Solomon and Harley Bishop. Throw in Mark King from Humpty Doo in Darwin and it was a truly cosmopolitan field. The V8 Dirt Modifieds were the

Stars set to shine under the lights

other main part of the speed fest as they contested the Mornington Garden Supplies ‘Grand in the Hand’ contest. Paul Tindall in the GDL Excavation’s (17) led from start to finish however his tyres went off late in the main event enabling Daryl Hickson in Mornington Garden Supplies (92) and last year’s winner Mick Kiraly driving Panther Chassis (48) to put up a three-way battle to the chequered flag. Behind them came Darren Clarke, Darren Tindall, Trevor Perry, Andrew Katz and Ebony Hobson. A good field of 1200cc Junior Sedans were on hand and as is often the case the racing was fantastic and faultless - belying the young age and inexperience of the 12 to 16-year-olds. Good mates Caleb Lincoln and Jackson Lunt went at it hammer and tong in the main event with side-byside battles for the lead with Lincoln just getting the upper hand by the end with Lunt second ahead of Shona and Seth Bent. Josh Stewart had an exciting night when he managed to roll his number 31 after hooking a rut. Lincoln had won both of the heats from Lunt.

STAR players from both Pakenham and Merinda Park are set to shine under the bright lights of Toomuc Reserve on Saturday as WGCA cricket begins the run home to finals. The second-placed Lions and thirdplaced Cobras will begin their round-nine one-day clash at 3pm, meaning an expected close finish will be played out in front of a big crowd under lights. Both teams have depth but the battle between league leaders - Pakenham’s Chris Smith (574 runs) and Merinda Park’s Jess Mathers (25 wickets) - will be a contest not to be missed. Smith’s main support will come from fellow opener Russ Lehman, Jason Williams and skipper Dom Paynter while Mathers will have his brother Shannon in his corner along with tearaway quick Jarrod Armitage. The Cobras will need to get Smith early or fall to the in-form Lions for the second time this season. Top-team Tooradin will look to inflict Kooweerup’s fifth straight loss when the two sides clash at Westernport Oval. The Seagulls, the undefeated reigning champs, have had some bitter battles with the Demons in recent seasons and would love nothing better than keeping the visitors down for the count. Cardinia should consolidate fourth place on the ladder with a home-win against Emerald while Pakenham Upper/Toomuc host Upper Beaconsfield in a game crucial to both sides as they look to avoid relegation.

BMW on track of success By DEREK OGDEN CALL it what you will - luxury four-wheel drive wagon; 4x4; sports utility vehicle; or BMW’s own title of ‘sports activity vehicle’ SAV’, the BMW X5 continues to barge its way through the Australian market. When it premiered in 1999, the four-wheel driven BMW X5 was the the first vehicle of its kind according to the German company. However, Range Rover may argue it introduced a sports activity model 29 years previously, though it didn’t tag it as such. Now the third generation of the new X5 is about to land in Australia with seven models, ranging in price from a tad over $80,000 to around $150,000, available from March. We had a preview of one of these, the X5 xDrive 30d recently. On the outside the new X5 is of similar proportions to the model it replaces but up front makes use of a wider kidney grille, headlight and tail lamp design giving the vehicle a more broad shouldered appearance.

Model range BMW X5 sDrive 25d: $82,900; BMW X5 xDrive 25d: $87,900; BMW X5 xDrive 30d: $99,900; BMW X5 xDrive 35i: $106,900; BMW X5 xDrive 40d: $115,900; BMW X5 xDrive 50i: $133,900; BMW X5 xDrive M50d: $147,900.

Style and function have combined up front with new air curtains at the outer edges of the apron designed to reduce drag by directing air around the wheel arches to create a curtain of air over the wheels, expressing it through breathers in the side panels. New-look 19-inch alloy wheels complete the picture. The xDrive 30d drivetrain, which includes an eight-speed automatic transmission and engine start / stop function, has been given boosts in power output, fuel economy and cleanliness. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine takes advantage of the latest in BMW TwinPower turbo technology and common-rail direct injection. This is enough to push the vehicle to 100 kilometres an hour from rest in just 6.9 sec-

The BMW X5 has upped the challenge to rivals. onds, 0.7 seconds quicker than before. Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle has been improved by 1.2 litres per 100 kilometres to 6.2 litres per 100km, with carbon dioxide emissions of 162 grams per kilometre, 33 grams per km better. However these figures appear rather optimistic as our test car consumed 12.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and eight to nine litres during open-

road travel. Standard equipment for the BMW X5 xDrive 30d goes beyond its $100,000 price tag with particular attention being paid to keeping the driver in touch with his or her surroundings. Awareness has been improved with Bi-Xenon headlights, LED front fog lights, High-Beam Assist and antidazzle exterior mirrors. The head-up display, driving assistant, which includes lane

departure warning, forward collision warning and pedestrian warning with light city braking function, rear-view camera, 360 degree surround view and audible alarms of varying tones for each section of the vehicle, add to the safety credentials of the new model. The satellite navigation system is displayed with impressive sharpness on a dashboardmounted wide screen together with other functions at the call

of the iDrive Touch controller. The latter is positioned rather inconveniently to the left of the gearshift on the centre console, a nod to the left-hand drive origins of the BMW. Voice control, internet functions and quality audio system make up the grab bag of premium features. Primarily a five-seater, a third row of seats is among an extensive list of cost options to prise open the potential owner’s wallet. One thing that was given a workout was the Driving Experience Control by which the driver can alter drivetrain settings by means of a button on the centre console. Comfort is enhanced with electric front seat adjustment with memory, while cargo loading convenience is taken care of with an automatic tailgate. Sport mode has the X5 30d in spritely mood, rare in such a big vehicle (two tonnes-plus), Sport+ lifts the feral function. We liked it, which perhaps explained the higher than expected fuel consumption. Then again, isn’t the typical owner of the BMW X5 likely to push their machines along.

Dealers sell BRZ By EWAN KENNEDY THOSE who aren’t into cars and technology may be puzzled to learn that the Subaru BRZ sports coupe, which has been on sale online since July 2012, is now being sold through Subaru dealerships for the first time. Until 1 January, the Subaru BRZ was sold exclusively online in this country. Improved supply from the Subaru’s Japanese factory means the BRZ is now being retailed through authorised Subaru dealers. It’s recommended driveaway price remains at $37,150 for the six-speed manual, the six-speed automatic comes in at $39,730. This is in line with the online prices charged since day one 18 months ago. Such was the car’s popularity on launch that the initial allocation of just 200 cars sold out just three hours after going live on the web. Subaru has sold 1800 BRZs in Australia since its online launch. The Subaru BRZ is built at the company’s Ota plant in Japan as a joint venture with the company’s part-owner, Toyota. Subaru BRZ breaks new ground for the company in Australia in having rear-wheel drive. All other models sold here have all-wheel drive (AWD), though the company does build front-drive (FWD) cars, none make it downunder. The Subaru coupe has low-slung styling and short overhangs. The front is dominated by a large, hexagonal grille with sweeping headlights. while the rear is tall and aggressive and has an additional brake light positioned between twin large tail pipes. Once settled in the seat the driver will find it’s firm but comfortable with plenty of legroom and surprisingly good head space. Our test car had a manual gearbox, a delightful short-throw unit which is fast and smooth and just asks to be used frequently. Who needs big power and torque when you have a gearbox like this to play with? Although there are four seats, the BRZ’s rear pair are minute units for emergency use only by anyone other than tiny tots. Surprisingly for a car where space is at a premium, BRZ’s boot is ruined by having a full-size spare wheel. The rear seatbacks do fold flat for extra storage space, but it’s all a bit messy. Steering is precise and direct with excellent feedback to the driver. As expected in a car of this type, the ride is firm with plenty of feel for the road yet comfortable enough for an extended trip. Equipment levels are high with standard safety equipment that includes dual front, side and curtain airbags, ABS brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control and a retractor brake pedal. It comes with a five-star ANCAP rating. Also standard are cruise control, leatherwrapped steering wheel and gear lever, pushbutton start and stop, sports seats, front and rear foglights and power-folding door mirrors.
