Mac attack By REBECCA BILLS IN A two-year battle, local identities the Tecoma 8 have held strong to their beliefs and taken on McDonald’s Australia. The group has been named the Mail’s 2013 Issue of the Year. Shane, Marcia, Karl, Ava, Janine, Mark, Martha and Jude, known as the Tecoma 8, have all donated

2013 ISSUE OF THE YEAR their time and energy into the picketing efforts at the Tecoma McDonald’s site in the hope of protecting their town against the organisation.

While the Mail remains unbiased towards controversial issues such as the Tecoma McDonald’s, the Tecoma 8’s sheer passion and

love for the area won them their title. Last year the Mail also awarded local identity David Jewell, another strong anti-Tecoma McDonald’s advocate, the award. The Tecoma 8’s notorious antics and actions drew widespread media attention from not only around the country but the world. The group faced a large court case earlier in the year after their

input into the Tecoma protests throughout 2013 which continued to push the boundaries. On 1 July, McDonald’s attempted to demolish the old Hazelvale Dairy building where members of the Tecoma 8 established themselves on the roof of the dairy delaying the demolition process. Continued page 3w

Lucky to be alive NEEDING more than 30 stitches to mend a gaping hole left in his leg wasn’t exactly how Brendon Miton thought he would begin the new year. He didn’t think he would be hit by a car while riding his bike and left on the side of the road in Olinda on New Year’s Day either. Mr Miton was riding downhill along Olinda – Monbulk Road in

Olinda not long before 9.30am when he noticed a car suddenly pulling into the left hand shoulder of the road without slowing down before swinging the car into a U-turn in front of him. “I flew across the bonnet of the car and landed on the other side of the car,� he said. “The car then backed up and drove around me and took off.� A keen cyclist, Mr Miton revisited the site of the crash on Friday, but ad-

mits he won’t be back on the bike for a while yet. He still needs crutches to walk, his leg is still badly bruised and swollen. “I’m lucky to be alive,� he said. “I would have ended up 20 metres from where I was hit. It’s a good advertisement for people to wear a helmet, that’s for sure. “I just can’t believe that someone could drive off – he would have seen me, I flew across his bonnet.�

Mr Miton said he was able to get a description of a car, a red Toyota Camry wagon, and gave the registration details to the police. But the owner of the car has told police he wasn’t driving and didn’t know who was. “I didn’t see the driver, but I know that was the car,� he said. “So I’m hoping someone saw the driver, who it was, or whether they noticed them driving erratically be-

By JESSE GRAHAM AFTER six years of closed gates, Gulf Station is back! The historic homestead, based on the Melba Highway just out of Yarra Glen, re-opened to the public on 26 December 2013 after more than half a decade of silence. Gulf Station co-ordinator Jeff Kendauge said that parts of the homestead needed major restoration work to keep the tourist attraction going. He said that the homestead is in ship-shape now and that the staff even created a maize maze for visitors to traverse on their visits, with a whodunit mystery for children to solve. There are two mazes - a children’s maze, in the shape of a draught horse’s head, and an adult maze, which is made into the shape of a tractor. The maze totals 4.75 acres, making it the largest maize maze in Australia, and the corn will eventually grow to be about 2.5 metres tall. Mr Kendauge said that, even through 40 degree weather, the maze will stay strong, due to drought-resistant plants. “We can handle heat, we can handle 40 degrees, we can handle no rain,� he said. He said another new attraction for younger visitors is a water slide, which runs down one of the hills at Gulf Station, and that there are animals on site to visit. “The thing with Gulf Station is that it’s a working pioneer farm,� he said. “Half the people through the gates, the first thing out of their mouth is ‘where are the animals?’.� Mr Kendauge said there are currently Merino sheep at the homestead and that the management is looking into getting small cattle, miniature horses and even a goose-house. Places of last resort By KATH GANNAWAY BURRINJA in Upwey is one of four new Neighbourhood Safer Places (NSPs) designated by Yarra Ranges Council. The cultural centre was added, along with Healesville RACV Club, Millgrove Recreation Reserve and Woori Yallock Reserve, to the shire’s current 11 NSPs at Yarra Ranges Council’s 10 December meeting. But it was not without discussion about whether they should be more correctly called Places of Last Resort. Councillor Samantha Dunn said

calling the designated buildings or areas Neighbourhood Safer Places sent the wrong message to the community. She welcomed Mayor Fiona McAllister’s move to have the matter, originally listed as a confidential item, discussed openly before the gallery. “I will not be happy until these are called Places of Last Resort to call them Neighbourhood Safer Places is completely flawed,” she said. “They are not safe, and this gives a completely wrong message.”

She said the council should continue to push for the more accurate description, but said it was good to see another four places had been assessed as appropriate for designation. “I think residents will be pleased to see more across the shire, but there is no guarantee of survival if you use one of these places, so it is always with mixed feelings when we designate these that we do need to emphasise there are no guarantees.” Cr McAllister said the designation of NSPs was a critical issue for the Yarra Ranges communities and

that there had been an incredible amount of work involved in making the 15 places available. The recommendation which was passed unanimously noted that the 11 current NSPs had passed the annual audit and so would remain designated for the coming fire danger period. The council is also required to provide signage at the sites and ensure the sites are maintained over the fire danger period. The report is to be made available to the public, minus any confidential information.

Car races back POLICE have located a stolen rare race car in Belgrave South worth $320,000. The car, which was stolen from a factory in Rowville last month, was found by a passerby on the side of Courtneys Road in Belgrave South about 12.30am who then called police. Poppy sales bloom for veterans By REBECCA BILLS MOUNT EVELYN shopkeepers have had another record year of poppy sales in conjunction with the Mount Evelyn Returned Services League (RSL). Mount Evelyn RSL Appeals Officer Dot Ervine said although they do not have all the trays back, the current tally looks like another record with more than $3080 already raised. “This is a fantastic effort seeing

that all our sales come from the one source - the Mount Evelyn community,” she said. “Thanks also to Robyn from the chemist, Jenny and Sandra who sold them at work and to our great band of workers who manned our table over those weeks.” Retail manager at Mount Evelyn Chemmart Robyn Fyander said the Red Poppy Appeal has extra special meaning to the pharmacy after pharmacists Chris Farquhar’s son spent

time serving in Afghanistan. “We care for the RSL and we really love supporting this appeal,” she said. “At Mount Evelyn Chemmart we are very community minded and I have already discussed with Dot that next year we are going to break records again. “I’ll be covered in poppies and ready to sell, sell, sell.” The Poppy Appeal runs each year in the lead up to Remembrance

Day to honour those who fell in times of war. The Red Poppy, an emblem symbolic of those who have fallen in time of war, were among the first plants to bloom in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium during World War l. Money raised through the appeal goes directly to assist both current and former serving members of the Australian and Allied defence forces and their dependants when needed.

Cyber breaches under attack THE VICTORIAN Coalition Government is taking action to develop a cyber security strategy for 2014. The strategy is aimed at addressing cyber security issues occurring now and in the future. Minister for Technology Gordon RichPhillips said the strategy will complement the approach to regulating information privacy and protective security. “The cyber security strategy will set out clear lines of accountability and governance structures for cyber security within the Victorian Government,” Mr Rich-Phillips said. The strategy will be used to implement the management of cyber threats, accountabilities and responsibilities. It will also enforce emergency response arrangements and capabilities. MORRISONS has now released a history book tracing back to its humble beginnings in 1976. The not-for-profit organisation has provided quality education, training, childcare services and community development opportunities, with a proud history of offering quality learning opportunities. The history book, written by local resident Paula Herlihy, showcases the last three and a half decades of growth and success of the house to date. The Mail met with Ms Herlihy and past treasurer Peter Sank who said this book was a great community asset - especially for the younger generations, new employees and house users to understand the history or the organisation. Both Ms Herlihy and Mr Sank are original committee members from 1976 and both are still connected to Morrisons as board members or staff. “The great thing about Morrisons and its people is that it has been able

IT was a New Year’s crime spree through Badger Creek that left power outages, smashed windows and burnt-out cars in its wake. According to police, two Mooroolbark youths, aged 14 and 16 years, visited Healesville on 31 December to see one of the pair’s girlfriends, shortly before embarking on a night-long spree that caused around $100,000 in damage to the surrounding area. The youths entered around 10 parked cars that were left unlocked around Badger Creek, stealing when they could and causing damage when they could not. The teenagers stole a car and, throughout the night, smashed windows in at the Badger Creek Primary School, kicked in the door of the Badger Creek Old School and sprayed graffiti on the blackboard and burgled the nearby milk bar. The coup de grace for the teenagers on the night was when they set fire to two cars, failing to light a third. A delivery van and a mobile-hometype van were both completely destroyed, and the fire from the mobile-home van on Bluegum Avenue blew a gas tank inside the vehicle’s kitchen area. The bottles exploded and the fire damaged overhead power-lines, leaving residents in surrounding area in the dark for around 18 hours. Lilydale Police Senior Detective Ian Brown said the pair was arrested - the 16-year-old has been remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Children’s Court, while the 14-year-old has been bailed to appear at the Ringwood Children’s Court in February. Sen Det Brown said that theycaused incredible amounts of damage over a

Yarra Glen THE necessary guarantee having been finalised, it is anticipated that the State Electricity Commission will extend the transmission mains to Yarra Glen early in the coming month. Due to the action of flood water the site of the Yarra usually used as a swimming pool is extremely dangerous this year. Two locals had a narrow escape from drowning during the holidays.

Mounted Constable C.J. Elliot of Yarra Glen has received notice of his appointment as a first-class constable. Gratification is expressed that he will remain in Yarra Glen. Guest House Report MR. and Mrs. Frost of the popular guest house ‘Log Cabin’ reported excellent patronage during the holidays. cord for the Upper Yarra district. Although thousands of holidaymakers and day trippers patronised the area there was no strife of any kind. There was not a single road accident reported to the police at either Warburton or Yarra Junction. Business people in Warburton were more than satisfied with their holiday turnover. At one stage it looked like being a lean Christmas, but the tills started to click in earnest on Christmas Eve and did not stop ringing until after the holidays. Round Up MR. Allan (Mick) Taylor passed away at a private hospital in Mentone at the age of 59 years. Mick, a former resident of Yarra Junction has the reputation of being one of the best footballers the Upper Yarra has ever seen. He and his wife have lived at Castlemaine since leaving Yarra Junction where Mick was the popular licensee of the Railway Hotel. Powelltown Store Burnt to Ground MCLAREN’S general store at Powelltown was burnt to the ground shortly af-

ter midnight on Thursday of last week. Only a small quantity of stock was saved and the total damage is estimated at something like £10,000. The only occupant of the premises was the proprietor of the store, Mr. Arthur McLaren who was asleep. He awoke with a start realising that the store was on fire, grabbed his clothes and made a hasty exit. McLaren’s Store has been a landmark at Powelltown for over half a century. From time to time the original store has been enlarged to cater for the district’s growing needs. The McLaren family has been associated with the business, a licensed emporium since its existence. Fire brigade crews urge residents to check they are prepared for the bushfire season. 110207

Plan, prepare, check again YOU’VE cleared the gutters, cut back the grass and tackled the undergrowth – but that might not mean that you are fully prepared for fire this summer. CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said research showed Victorians were great at carrying out the easy to do preparation tasks in the lead-up to the fire season. “But it’s actions like talking to your CFA brigade about the risk where you live and making a decision with your family about when you’ll leave and where you’ll go that could save your life,” he said. Fire risk varies from city fringe areas next to grassland to rural areas close to grass or bushland. For information on the risk in your area and tips on leaving early, you can talk to your local CFA brigade or visit cfa. vic.gov.au. Fire planning and preparation should include a conversation with your household at

the start of summer about when you will leave before a fire and where you will go. You also need to decide where you will shelter if you get caught out and cannot leave your property or area. “Make sure everyone you live with knows these plans, so you’re all clear about what you’ll do on a fire risk day,” Mr Ferguson said. “You should also pack an emergency kit at the start of summer so you’re ready to go any time. “This should include important paperwork and essentials like mobile phones, medications, change of clothes and water. If your kit is already packed, it’s easier to grab it and go. “Finally, remember to talk to friends, family and neighbours who may need help leaving early before a fire,” he said. “The responsibility for surviving the fire season is shared between emergency services and the community – we

Motoring in memor y By JESSE GRAHAM MOTORISTS from the Yarra Ranges and beyond are being asked to lend their wheels to a good cause next month as the upcoming Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise draws nearer. The annual cruise aims to raise money for Healesville CFA and provide an afternoon of reflection on the tragedy that struck the Yarra Ranges and surrounds on 7 February five years ago. Drivers will depart from Lilydale Industrial Park’s car park at 3pm on Saturday 1 February, making their way down the highway to Yarra Glen, then through Toolangi and Chum Creek, before finishing in Healesville about 50 minutes later. The cruise finishes at Healesville Railway Station where cars will be on display from 4pm, and Exploded View will be performing live from 4.30pm, before a Remembrance Ceremony at 5.30pm. Event organiser Stacey BennettKinsmore said the event raised about $10,000 last year and that she hopes it will again this year. She said that the cruise, which

started in memory of Kate Ansett and Steve Fisher, who died during Black Saturday, provides an atmosphere and a space to help reflect on the fires and the time that has passed. “It’s something you can’t explain - you have to come along and experience it for yourself,” she said. “Cruising through the towns, you know you’re in a big group and that you’re there for the same reason. “When we talk to people, they say they’re looking forward to it it’s a chance to pay their respects and show that we still haven’t forgotten.” Stacey said all motorists can take part, not just car enthusiasts or vintage car owners, and that she hoped to see about 500 cars in this year’s cruise. Food and drinks will be on sale at the event, along with train-rides running from the railway station, and all money raised will be donated to Healesville CFA. Rainfall patchy reports DECEMBER rainfall was up dramatically in December for Healesville, with Alma Mitchell recording 78.3mm over 14 days, compared with 31.6mm over 12 days in 2012. The total rainfall for 2013, however, was 792.6mm, down from 1037.4mm in 2012. In Hoddles Creek, rain was up as well, with 90mm recorded over eight days by Doug Armstrong, compared to 61mm over 13 days the year before against an average December rainfall of 103mm. Total rainfall in 2013 was recorded by Mr Armstrong at 1228mm, down from 1296 in 2012.

Good vibe for fire recovery $9.5 million per year in the local economy, which will assist with the town’s regeneration following the Black Saturday bushfires. Mr Ryan said that a $2 million redevelopment of the Marysville Golf and Bowls Club will also help the town recover and give tourists even more reasons to stop on their way through. “The clubhouse was one of the few buildings in the town to survive Black Saturday - however, the clubhouse building needed to be refreshed and reinvigorated,” he said. “The project involves the demolition of the western end of the clubhouse and construction of a new function room that will accommodate more than 200 people standing and 100 people seated.” The clubhouse redevelopment is expected to create five full-time jobs when completed, and Ms McLeish and Mr Ryan joined club president Ken Whittingham in turning the sod on 29 November last year. Money for the redevelopment has come from the State Government, which spent $1.45 million, along with $523,213 from the Marysville and Triangle Community Bushfire Relief Fund - the remaining funds will be provided by the Marysville Community Golf and Bowls Club.

RECOVERY from Black Saturday continues for Marysville almost five years on, with a new conference centre and a golf and bowls clubhouse being developed to boost tourism in the area. The construction on Marysville’s $28 million Vibe Hotel and Conference Centre is expected to finish this year with doors set to open in spring and an influx of new jobs to accompany it. Seymour MP Cindy McLeish inspected the progress of the construction with Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan late last year, and said the progress is well on track. Ms McLeish said the conference centre will create 85 full-time jobs during construction and more than 60 full-time jobs once the hotel is running, along with generating tourism flow through the town. “It will play a great part in attracting visitors back to Marysville to see other drawcards, like the magnificent Steavenson Falls, Gallipoli Park and to engage in the summer and winter-time activities that are associated with Lake Mountain,” she said. She said the total benefit of the centre will be a boost of up to

Field opens for finals WITH the Christmas hiatus over, cricketers in the Yarra Valley returned to the field on Saturday refreshed and eager to impress in the run towards finals. An intriguing battle for finals positions has opened up in the DJ Strachan Shield with seven teams well and truly capable of featuring in finals action. With two one day games to kick things off, the teams don’t have long to press their claims. In the match of the round, third placed Coldstream hosted top of the ladder Healesville. Both sides entered the game at opposite ends of the form tree as Healesville has taken all before it in the first half of the season, while Coldstream hit a sizeable hurdle in its run into Christmas winning only one of its last four games. Coldstream batted first and it was star opening bat Danny Adams (41) who lead from the front in an exceptional batting performance from the home side. Contributions from youngster Bailey Fritsch (27) and the hard hitting Mathew Stark (31) ensured the Crocs scored a formidable 8/194 at the Swamp, a venue where boundaries don’t readily come flying off the bat. The consistent Chance Burridge lead from the front with some notable absentees from the Bloods’ bowling attack. Healesville’s reply was going to be heavily reliant on its opening pair of Geoff Stock and Johnny Heywood, and the former built a significant foundation on which his team could build upon. The experienced Brian Horner (27) and a late contribution from Burridge (35) gave the home side some headaches, but the Bloods were always one step behind in their chase and eventually fell 34 runs short of their target falling to be all out on 160. Stark braved the early onslaught from Stock to collect 3/40, while he was well supported by Jamie Pegg (2/7) and captain Matt Jonson (2/29) who both picked up key wickets to

ensure the Bloods’ chase continued to falter. After a shaky start to the season, Seville’s ability to find a way to win despite indifferent form saw it reach second position at Christmas, and with the opportunity to improve on many aspects of its game, sees it as the danger team leading into the finals. The Blues hosted Woori Yallock which has shown glimpses of its potential as a team, but its inconsistencies saw it outside the top four and with a point to prove. The home side opened the batting and found the going tough against the talented opening pairing of Simon Young (5/36) and Jackson Wright (2/19). The pair raced through Seville’s top order, and with the ground on the slow side, the Blues task was made all the more difficult. Contributions from returning premiership players Ranga Yasalal (40) and Gary Frankovic (19) ensured the home side would bat out their allotted overs, however a score of 9/138 posed a chaseable target for the eager Tigers. Woori Yallock’s chase started with an excellent battle between bat and ball. Unfortunately for the Tigers, no batsman could build on their starts, and despite a valiant 23 not out from Ryan Smith, the tail lacked wag against the experience and guile of Andy Kay (3/12) and his crew, with Woori Yallock eventually dismissed for a disappointing 111. In the final game of the round, Warburton-Millgrove hosted neighbours Yarra Junction in a crucial game where the winner would stay within striking distance of the top four. The home side batted first and looked in control from the outset. Brilliant half centuries from captain Troy Murphy (56) and the classy Jason Coghlan (53) had the innings off to a brisk start and some lusty hitting in the closing overs saw the Burras set an impressive total of 9/194. Dale Robertson (4/37) battled gamely with the ball, but he

lacked any significant support. Yarra Junction was always going to be battling in reply, but it made a bright enough start with the experienced Dan Lever (28) and impressive youngster Marcel Kocher (22) giving the Eagles the best start. The Christmas school holidays offer the opportunity for the Valley’s best young cricketers to show their wares against other talented youngsters in the annual VMCU Representative carnivals. The teams from the Yarra Valley have had a successful start to the competition with two of the teams all but securing quarter final births. The Under 16 team has started with an impressive three wins from four games, and a win against South East on Monday would see the team secure a home quarter final. Healesville’s Dale Senior has been the standout with both the bat (180 runs) and the ball (seven wickets). Healesville’s Blake Binion and Coldstream’s Liam Pickett have formed a useful opening partnership, often getting their side off to a solid start. The Under 14s have found the going a little tougher, but with two wins from their four games they have the opportunity to secure their place in the quarter finals with a win on Monday against Mornington Peninsula CA. For the youngest stars, the Under 12s, in a team performance, the team has been unlucky not to record more than one win from its four games. The players have enjoyed the competition so far, with most of them experiencing the challenge of representative cricket for the first time. Crowds take a spin for Cup A FORMER champion had hopes for a consecutive win dashed as intense racing action hit the track at Healesville last weekend. About 3500 people attended the Healesville Cup racing event on 11 January at the Healesville race track with riders facing off in six races. Last year’s cup winner, Guadalcanal, placed sixth in the drawcard 1650 metre event, losing to Spinning Tune, who was ridden by premiershipwinning picnic rider Adam Bodey. The cup winner took home $4000, while winners of the other races won $3000. President of Healesville Amateur Racing Club David Purcell said that he was thrilled with the magnitude of the crowd which included waves of families and fresh-faced visitors to the valley. “It was an exceptional day - it exceeded our expectations. We were thrilled with the response by the public, by the horse trainers and jockeys,” he said. The annual event included children’s activities, such as running races, pony rides, mini-golf and an animal farm, along with a vintage hot rod display for bigger kids. Hyundai 140 gets a high-tech revamp. New features in 2014 Hyundai i40 include a powered tailgate. transmission shift points to achieve optimum fuel economy, while ‘Sports’ mode delays automatic transmission shift points and reduces steering assistance to achieve a sportier driving experience. Styling changes are minimal as the i40 is still relative new, but there are revisions to the look of the front. There’s a Euro style ‘shark fin’ antenna on i40 Tourer Elite and Premium models, as well as new allow wheel designs. The 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheels, on the i40 Elite and Premium variants respectively, now have a dark silver metallic finish. All i40 models have Bluetooth connectivity including audio streaming, as

well as auxiliary and USB sockets. The Hyundai i40 Active has a single CD player, Elite and Premium have a six-disc changer with a more advanced audio system. Engine options are a 2.0-litre petrol or 1.7-litre turbo-diesel engine. The diesel is proving particularly popular, with peak power of 100 kW, and torque of 320 Nm between 2000 and 2500 rpm. The petrol engine has up to 130 kW of power, its torque peak of 213 Nm is a sky-high 4700 rpm, but it does have a good spread of grunt from about 2000rpm. Prices and models range from $29,990 to $47,590.

SOUTH Korean maker Hyundai continues to advance into the field of European technology, with several features in the just announced 2014 Hyundai i40 sedan and wagon being borrowed from the upmarket German marques. Chief among these is a smart feature that allows hands-free operation of the tailgate. This automatically opens the powered tailgate when someone with the car’s smart key enters the ‘detection zone’ (500 to 1000 mm behind the tailgate) and remains there for at least three seconds. So that no one is taken by surprise by the automatically opening tailgate, a buzzer sounds and the vehicle’s hazard lights flash prior to the tailgate opening. Operation of the Hyundai Smart Tailgate function can be cancelled at any time by pressing any button on the proximity smart key or it can be permanently turned off if you’re not keen on it. Features like Smart Parking Assist and Lane Departure Warning and Assist were already standard on the Hyundai i40 and this new tailgate opening system adds to the technology package. All 2014 models Hyundai i40 now have an all-new Drive Mode Select system that lets the driver to choose from Normal, Eco, or Sports mode to customise the drive ‘feel’ to best meet the environment. As the name suggests, ‘Normal’ mode is most suited for day-to-day driving, ‘Eco’ mode reprograms automatic
