Healthy boost By JESSE GRAHAM THE Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) has been named the Mail’s 2013 Issue of the Year for its hard work in campaigning for services to return to the local hospital. The group of eight, which formed in late 2012, had a busy year in 2013, with a strong campaign in the Yarra Valley to get surgical, dialysis and maternity services secured for the community. When Health Minister David Davis announced that the hospital would receive $7.8 million for an expansion, it was an affirmation of the group’s efforts, with many of the services they sought being listed in the announcement. Once the upgrade is complete in coming years, six renal dialysis chairs will be available for patients along with surgery via a new theatre and increased appointments for cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and respiratory services will be available. Following the announcement, the group continued to gain momentum with its campaign, hoping to restore birthing services to the area after they were halted at the hospital around October 2012. The closure meant that Yarra Valley residents have to travel for about an hour to reach the Angliss Hospital or Box Hill Hospital for maternity services. A balloon release was held on the anniversary of the maternity ward’s closure with blue and pink balloons representing children born at the hospital in the past. The group has also been actively fund-raising for a business case study. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Ryrie Ward councillor and member of SHHAG Fiona McAllister said that 2013 had been an amazing year for the group. “At every turn, we had such incredible support - from the hundreds who came along to the meeting, to the thousands on Facebook and in surveys,” she said. “Overall, in terms of what the group

Bev Schmolling is one of the members of the Save Healesville Hospital Action Group, which has campaigned for medical services for the Picture: JESSE GRAHAM community. 106789 has achieved for community and on behalf of the community... we wouldn’t have predicted we’d be at this point a year later.” Cr McAllister said the group has most of the $75,000 needed for the business case study, thanks to a recent donation of $10,000 from the Strawberry Growers’ Association. The donation complements about $50,000 from the Federal Government, more than $5000 from the Friends of
Forestry and $2500 from Bendigo Bank. The business case study will assess whether or not Healesville Hospital should separate from Eastern Health and become an independent rural hospital. Cr McAllister thanked members of the local community and her other group members for their steadfast support over the year and for all of their help lobbying, generating community
interest, and for not giving up on the hospital. “It’s been a year of pretty amazing outcomes, and it’s such a brilliant reminder of what our community achieves when they stand up for something really important to them,” Cr McAllister said. Throughout the campaign, the group’s members have met with Mr Davis for discussions about the hospital and its future. The group members have said that
the Victorian Government has supported SHHAG and its goals. The year held many victories for SHHAG and its members and those victories have helped the group to gain momentum towards their ultimate goal of having a fully-equipped and fullyfunctioning hospital to service Yarra Valley residents. If the coming year is anything like the last, big things can be expected of the campaign.

A HEALESVILLE resident is demanding a definite timeline for Healesville Hospital’s expansion, after spending six years waiting for dialysis services to come to town. End to the trauma By KATH GANNAWAY LAUNCHING Place residents who have endured years of trauma on their doorstep have welcomed a $3.2 million road safety announcement last week. Gembrook MP Brad Battin announced the funding for improvements to the Warburton Highway at Launchto ing Place last week saying it aimed address a history of run-off crashes along the stretch of highway from Lester Street to Don Road. The funding will come from the Safer Road Infrastructure Program. Mr Battin said in the five years to 22 September last year there had been casualty crashes on the stretch includresultwhich 16 and fatalities two ing ed in serious injury. He said many Launching Place residents had contacted him over the last to two years calling for improvements the highway. The statistics are not news to residents including Paul van Kaathoven and Martin Chadwick, who have been up part of a lobby group that ramped a long-standing campaign for road of improvements following the death 19-year-old man on the notorious section between Allsops and Lusatia Park roads in March last year. VicRoads announced in July that they had identified the works that needed to be done and submitted the project for funding. area – an idea dismissed by protimber groups. The courts, meanwhile, handed down its own decision a forestry dispute, with a MyEnvironment v VicForests Supreme Court appeal resulting in a win for VicForests. The decision paved the way for logging to resume in three Toolangi coupes in the near future. In the courts, the Mail also covered the trial of former Warburton resident Colin David McKenzie who was found guilty of more than 20 fraudrelated charges and sentenced to 36 months imprisonment. The Yarra Valley area was also shifted to a new electorate as part of redistribution and now sits in the electorate of Eildon, which stretches to Mansfield and will be disputed in November’s state election. Many of these issues will carry on to 2014, with matters such as the Bushfire Management Overlay, among others, set for change and debate in coming months. 3

Saturday bushfires, a number of memorials for those lost were opened in Marysville, Yarra Glen, Healesville, Steels Creek, Dixons Creek and Chum Creek. Notable Yarra Valley identities hung up their hats this year, with Merran Macs from Rivendell retiring after 20 years, Warburton Post Office’s Norman Orr retiring after 16 years, Yarra Glen Primary School principal Joe Pacquola retiring after 31 years at the school and Healesville High School’s Lyn Baker saying goodbye after 24 years on the job. The Yarra Ranges Council elected a new mayor in November, with Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister taking the top job, alongside Deputy Mayor, Billanook Ward Maria McCarthy – the first time in 19 years that two women have been voted into the top jobs at the same time. Debates around logging also came to the forefront in 2013, with Leadbeater’s possum expert Professor David Lindenmayer proposing a new national park in the Central Highlands

IT WAS a year of heartbreaks and triumphs, celebrations and reflections in the stories of The Mail throughout 2013. A number of issues dominated the headlines and the front pages over the year, such as the proposal to move drug rehabilitation centre Narconon into Warburton. The proposal ignited furious debate between residents and representatives for the centre about the suitability for the town and potential risks for the community. The push to return services to Healesville Hospital has also had a huge year, with $7.8 million in funding announced in September. The Save Healesville Hospital Action Group has been working towards a case study to assess the possibility of making the hospital independent, with more than half of the $100,000 fund-raising goal secured. Issues about mobile service reception in East Warburton and power outages in Warburton
made the headlines, with conversations about solutions still occurring on both issues. A VCAT approval of the controversial sawmill-site development in Healesville left many in the community angered and the development set for completion before the end of 2014. Landmark Warburton Resident Bob ‘Boinga’ Prudhoe featured prolifically in the Mail after a demolition order was issued by Yarra Ranges Council for part of his widely-acclaimed sculpture building. A number of young Yarra Valley residents tragically lost their lives during the year, along with some well-known community elders, with tributes and recollections flowing from family members and friends. Historical landmarks were noted in 2013, with Marysville celebrating 150 years, Powelltown Tramway noting 100 years, Coranderrk Aboriginal Station’s 150th anniversary and the Warburton Film Festival turning 30. In the lead-up to February’s fifth anniversary of the Black

Missy moment By JESSE GRAHAM THIS was the moment, as captured by the Mail, when missing horse Missy was reunited with her loving owner Gladys Ramsay after her six day ordeal. Ms Ramsay burst into tears, and the search group burst into cheers, as the mare was led out of the Toolangi State Forest on Friday morning by horseman Michael Whitehead. Feeding Missy some hardearned carrots, Ms Ramsay said she was astonished that Missy appeared to have few visible injuries and appeared to be in good health and good spirits. “I’m astonished, she said. “It’s been a long time, nearly a week, and she had a very bad fall. “She’s obviously a tough little

The social media campaign saw fliers posted on cars around the Yarra Valley and an inundation of calls to Mr Finn, offering advice and assistance to recover the horse. Mr Whitehead took two days off from work and travelled down to the area after hearing the news from a friend, and said he was happy to have returned Missy to her grateful owner. “I came here to find a horse and I found her - I’m very happy, he

A HEALESVILLE businessman who says he is being driven to the wall by Yarra Ranges Council has launched a Facebook fighting-fund against planning decisions he says the council knew could not be enforced.

YELLINGBO’S CFA captain says fuel loading is extreme in the Yellingbo Conservation Reserve and he will refuse to send his volunteers in to fight a major fire if maintenance tracks are inaccessible. Brigade captain Paul Spinks wants to set the record straight on the brigade’s stance towards the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council (VEAC) investigation into how to conserve and enhance the flora and fauna values in an area across the Yarra Ranges from Healesville to Gembrook, Sassafras to Millgrove and in between. He was disappointed that little to none of the brigade’s submission about good fire management was included in the Yellingbo Investigation draft proposals paper. “Good fire management is in the interests of all stakeholders but by under-resourcing such conservation reserves, community safety is compromised and conservation goals fail, he said. “What will we leave for our future generations if we fail to plan for fire? YOU don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone, could be said of Warburton post master Norman Orr. Norm and wife Kerry retired this year after 16 years serving the community at the Warburton Post Office. The salute by the community spoke of a ‘businessman’ who had given much more to the community that the nine-to-five obligation that comes with running a business. Norm was a passionate advocate for the Warburton business and broader community going well beyond the call of duty in his involvement in the Chamber of Commerce, in promoting the Upper Yarra on his annual Great Victorian Bike Ride and through numerous projects. Upper Yarra Community Enterprise secretary Geoff Vickers and Paul Jackson, vice president
passion for history and the way it has been reported in local newspapers going back over the past 100-plus years. The Millgrove historian and teacher of history has kept the history of the Yarra Valley alive not only through her research and writing, but in playing an active role in local historical societies and championing causes including most notably the salvation and restoration of the Warburton Mechanics Institute. She was the woman behind (pardon the pun) the Wonderful Women of Warburton nude post-card shoot that raised money for the Mechanics’ campaign and she has many times spent hundreds of hours putting forward submissions to protect local heritage. Ellena has managed to walk the often delicate line between picking out the most interesting and relevant news stories from the past while being mindful of local sensitivities. Pages from the Past has covered some major political and social changes over the time and invariably people love to have that connection with the past. It is intrinsically in her nature to share, and with her vast knowledge of local history, she is a ‘go to’ person for anyone researching their family tree, or a history project. At the Mail, we value not only her contribution each week, but her friendship and (it has to be said) her quirky sense of humour.

of Warburton Valley CEDA expressed the gratitude of the community at the farewell. “We are here to say thank you for your service to us, Mr Vickers said adding that the Warburton Post Office with the Orrs at the helm had been a place to collect the mail, have a laugh and learn about the successes, and the tragedies that are part and parcel of a community. Mr Jackson spoke of Norm’s contribution to the Chamber of Commerce of which he was president for a number of years, and to community projects including the train murals in which he was instrumental. Warburton Primary School captains Gaia Mitting and Jeremy Nicholson said what a lot of people were saying, that they would miss Norm as Post Master. “We have known him for a very long time, and he is just a very lovely man with a smiling face, a really nice person, Gaia said. “He has helped a lot of families, Jeremy said.

VCAT ultimately ruled in favour of council in regards to other aspects of Mr Christie’s application, namely an extension of opening hours until 5am being denied. But the saga raised a deeper question, about whether conditions can be placed on applications by council, even if they are not part of the planning scheme. Mr Christie is currently working on a new application to council for Fluid Lounge and a claim for costs against the Yarra Ranges Council as part of the VCAT saga was turned down.
Garry Christie applied for planning permission to open his Fluid Lounge Bar and CafĂŠ until 5am but was told he had to pay $38,500 as a parking contribution and provide a courtesy bus. The parking contribution and courtesy bus were not in the original planning department recommendation, but added as conditions by the previous council as part of the approval in April 2012. The council rejected his bid for 5am opening and Mr Christie launched an appeal in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Yarra Ranges Council has defended its decision saying while all recommendations are based on the planning scheme, councillors have the option of adding conditions in response to community objections. The issue came to a head for Mr Christie when the matter went to VCAT mediation in April costing him and Yarra Ranges ratepayers thousands of dollars when the council withdrew the parking and bus requirements just minutes into the mediation. Mr Christie, a former YRC employee, said he informed the council councillors and staff, including the CEO that the conditions would Fluid Lounge owner Garry Christie is fighting back against Yarra Ranges Council decisions he says months of anguish. 99565 not hold up. have cost him

A BACK-and-forth battle over Healesville Business owner Garry Christie’s planning application graced the pages of the Mail often in 2013. The application for Fluid Lounge generated controversy after Yarra Ranges Council placed conditions onto their decision which Mr Christie said were not legal under the Planning Scheme. The conditions, of $38,000 paid in-lieu of parking spaces and the provision of a courtesy bus, were dropped in minutes when the application was appealed to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

LOGGING in the Toolangi State Forest continues to be one of the largest ongoing newsmakers for the Mail. The formation of the Leadbeater’s Possum Advisory Group, which is chaired by Zoos Victoria (Healesville Sanctuary) and the Victorian Association of Forest Industries (VAFI), in June has attempted to balance the interests of environmental and logging groups. The group has yet to hand down its recommendations to the Victorian Government, though $1 million has been allocated to fund immediate actions. A MyEnvironment appeal in the Supreme Court against a 2012 decision in favour of VicForests’ logging in Toolangi failed on Tuesday 10 December, paving the way to logging in three coupes held up by an injunction for two years. The Knitting Nannas of Toolangi (KNOT) also fronted court, charged with trespass from a protest incident in September 2012 where forestry workers were forced to stop work. The eight members of the group were all sent from the court with charges set to be dropped, after each paid $50 to a landcare group under a diversion program. Leadbeater’s Possum expert, Professor David Lindenmayer urged for an end to clearfell logging by the end of 2013 and for the formation of a national park in the central highlands area. Timber groups have opposed the national park idea. The fight continues‌

IT was a New Year’s crime spree through Badger Creek that left power outages, smashed windows and burntout cars in its wake. According to police, two Mooroolbark youths, aged 14 and 16 years, visited Healesville on 31 December to see one of the pair’s girlfriends, shortly before embarking on a night-long spree that caused around $100,000 in damage to the surrounding area. The youths entered around 10 parked cars that were left unlocked around Badger Creek, stealing when they could and causing damage when they could not. The teenagers stole a car and, throughout the night, smashed windows in at the Badger Creek Primary School, kicked in the door of the Badger Creek Old School and sprayed graffiti on the blackboard and burgled the nearby milk bar. The coup de grace for the teenagers on the night was when they set fire to two cars, failing to light a third. A delivery van and a mobile-home-type van were both completely destroyed, and the fire from the mobilehome van on Bluegum Avenue blew a gas tank inside the vehicle’s kitchen area. The bottles exploded and the fire damaged overhead power-lines, leaving residents in surrounding area in the dark for around 18 hours. Lilydale Police Senior Detective Ian Brown said the pair was arrested - the 16-year-old has been remanded in custody to appear
at the Melbourne Children’s Court, while the 14-year-old has been bailed to appear at the Ringwood Children’s Court in February. Sen Det Brown said that they caused incredible amounts of damage over a short period of time, in what could only be called a “crime spree”. “Where they couldn’t steal, they damaged,” he said. “It was the same with the cars - if they didn’t steal anything, they burnt them.” The youths have been charged with three counts of arson, burglary, criminal damage and a number of thefts from motor cars. Sen Det Brown said the results weren’t final, but that the damage was expected to be somewhere around $100,000. He remarked that the youths only attacked cars that were left unlocked, and said they tried around 100 doors throughout the evening. “Some of the cars, they had tried to damage ignitions, but they haven’t forced entry to any of them,” Sen Det Brown said. He urged all residents to keep their cars safely locked overnight or when not attended and to not leave valuables in sight or in vulnerable places. Sen Det Brown said that he had recovered some stolen items from the teens and that anyone who thinks their car may have been robbed on the night should contact Lilydale Police on 9739 2300.

By JESSE GRAHAM AFTER six years of closed gates, Gulf Station is back! The historic homestead, based on the Melba Highway just out of Yarra Glen, re-opened to the public on 26 December 2013 after more than half a decade of silence. Gulf Station co-ordinator Jeff Kendauge said that parts of the homestead needed major restoration work to keep the tourist attraction going. He said that the homestead is in ship-shape now and that the staff even created a maize maze for visitors to traverse on their visits, with a whodunit mystery for children to solve. There are two mazes - a children’s maze, in the shape of a draught horse’s head, and an adult maze, which is made into the shape of a tractor. The maze totals 4.75 acres, making it the largest maize maze in Australia, and the corn will eventually grow to be about 2.5 metres tall. Mr Kendauge said that, even through 40 degree weather, the maze will stay strong, due to drought-resistant plants. “We can handle heat, we can handle 40 degrees, we can handle no rain, he said. He said another new attraction for younger visitors is a water slide, which runs down one of the hills at Gulf Station, and that there are animals on site to visit. “The thing with Gulf Station is that it’s a working pioneer farm, he said. “Half the people through the gates, the first thing out of their mouth is ‘where are the animals?’. Mr Kendauge said there are currently Merino sheep at the homestead and that the management is looking into getting small cattle, miniature horses and even a goose-house. But, ultimately, he said that the thing that re-

HEALESVILLE’S Black Saturday memorial bench has been installed and is available for public use as the fifth anniversary of the fires draws nearer. The memorial bench, which sits in Queens Park, was created by Healesville artist Ali Griffin and is comprised of a circular metal seat, with words from community members cut into the metal. The bench was installed on Thursday 12 December and Ms Griffin said that, although she couldn’t fit everyone’s stories onto the bench, she hopes it accurately reflects the community sentiment about the tragedy. “I remember ... ” the stories begin, with different comments from community members etched into the metal. “... The people I served and the mates beside me...” “... Kangaroos trying to find something to eat...” “... My sister phoning and crying and saying “you get out now!”...” “... The generosity of strangers and the love of friends...” These are just some of the words marked on the bench that were submitted by community members earlier this year. There was no official opening event for the memorial but Ms Griffin invites residents and visitors to visit the space and reflect on how the

premises past already-approved times. Mr Christie said that he hopes the council will approve the amendment, which received no objections from the public, and that he was meeting with Yarra Ranges Mayor and Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister to talk about the matter. The saga involving Mr Christie’s planning permit went to VCAT twice last year, which Mr Christie said left him about $50,000 out of pocket. His claim for costs was addressed by VCAT senior member Jeanette Rickards who dismissed both claims and said that council representatives had not conducted themselves in a way to unnecessarily disadvantage Mr Christie. Ms Rickards answered Mr Christie’s concerns about conditions placed on his permit by the council, which he said were illegal, and said that council officers appeared to acknowledge the conditions should never have been imposed. “Be that as it may, this was
the first time that the officers could request that the conditions be removed and they promptly did so,” she wrote. “The condition remaining in contention was finally resolved following a hearing before the tribunal.” Mr Christie said that he was disappointed with the result of the order and maintains that the saga has resulted in an unnecessary loss of money from himself and council. “It’s extremely disappointing that VCAT didn’t make some sort of ruling to stop this happening again,” he said. “It could happen to someone again in the future, and to go through the process to dispute it, it costs everybody. Both parties told the Mail that they would not appeal against Ms Rickards’s decision. Yarra Ranges Council Director of Planning, Building and Health Andrew Paxton said it is rare for VCAT to award costs in favour of a council.

A HEALESVILLE business owner has sought to amend his planning application immediately after VCAT threw out his claim for costs against the council. Fluid Lounge owner Garry Christie has applied for an amendment to his planning application to allow sale and consumption of liquor at Fluid Lounge until 3am on weekends. The application comes after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) dismissed his $28,229.51 claim against the Yarra Ranges Council, and its $3000 claim against him on 6 December. An amendment to the Victorian Government’s Planning Scheme last year means that Fluid Lounge is now in a commercial one zone and is considered a tavern so it has no restrictions on its opening hours. However, a licence must be given by the liquor licensing body, which collaborates with Victoria Police to determine licences, to sell liquor on the

In the past, truck windows have been smashed, sleepers have been stolen, trains and carriages have been covered in graffiti and diesel has been siphoned from vehicles.

TOOLANGI’S Little Red Treehouse has a new custodian perched above the tree floor but a demand from the DEPI for a licence has brought the structure’s future into question. Beee Mallia, a 26-year-old from Epping, took up the reins from former treehouse-dweller Hannah Patchett at the Little Red Toolangi Treehouse in late December. However, on 13 December, the tree that accommodates the treehouse had a notice placed on it from the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI), demanding a licence or relevant permission for the treehouse to be presented. According to the notice, failure to produce the permission in 21 days (by 3 January) could result in the DEPI applying to a magistrate to have the treehouse
reach an amicable solution without the need for a court process,” it said. “DEPI respects people’s right to protest and enjoy the forest, but structures cannot be erected without a licence, lease or authority.” Ms Mallia said that the treehouse’s existence was to help generate support for protests against logging in the state forest and to raise awareness of its impacts on the environment. She said she is taking the protest day by day, but could commit to stay in the tree, 25 metres from the forest floor, for the long term. What do you think of the Little Red Toolangi Treehouse? removed at the expense of the owners. Ms Mallia said that the treehouse, which was erected to protest against clear-fell logging in the Toolangi State Forest, was constructed by an anonymous party and has no official owner. She said the treehouse, which was established on 10 November, does not have a licence, permit, or other form of permission but that the group behind the treehouse would discuss their next actions. A spokesperson for the DEPI told the Mail that, due to a lack of response from a representative, DEPI would advertise on 15 January and the owner would have until 5 February to contact the department before it applies for the treehouse’s removal. “We hope the owner of the Little Red Toolangi Treehouse will come forward so we can
A HEALESVILLE man has been caught red handed by police, stealing steel track sections from the Yarra Valley Railway (YVR) Station in Healesville. The 45-year-old Healesville man was caught stealing the track sections and loading them onto the back of a truck with a 45-year-old Mooroolbark man in daylight on 17 December. Both men were arrested by
Healesville police, charged with theft and bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 14 March. YVR vice president Brett Whelan said that he was disappointed that someone from the area was trying to steal from the railway. “It’s so disappointing that we find community members stealing from what is a community asset,” he said. “It’s really unfortunate that

Line up for new electorate By JESSE GRAHAM THE election race is beginning early for the newly-formed Eildon electorate, with the two front-runners emerging from the two major parties both boasting rich backgrounds in the area. Gladysdale resident and Upper Yarra Community House (UYCH) CEO Sally Brennan has been selected as the Labor endorsed candidate for November’s state election in the area. Meanwhile, Seymour MP Cindy McLeish has announced that she will be seeking preselection for the electorate, to continue her representation for the Liberal Party as her Seymour electorate is abolished. Ms McLeish has not been officially pre-selected as the Liberal Party’s candidate for the election - she said the process of selection will be membership-based at a local level. The redistribution of electorial boundaries came in late last
year with the new electorate of Eildon being created. It stretches from Warburton to Mansfield and takes in areas of the Seymour and Gembrook electorates. Ms Brennan, who has been with UYCH for 21 years, said she has first-hand knowledge of the area and its issues, which she said will help in contesting for the new seat. “I think I have a lot to offer public office, in terms of my community involvement over many years,” she said. “I’ve been an active community member for the last 40 years on many levels and this is my territory. “My working life has been about identifying gaps in services for community, and filling them.” Ms McLeish, who has held the seat since 2010, said the new electorate is a natural fit for her, having a strong family history in Yea, which she still
lives close to. She said she has generated positive change in the area over the past three years and that she has had no hesitation in hassling ministers to help drive action. “It has been an honour to represent this area for the last three years,” she said. “I was especially thrilled that I could help secure $7.8 million to ensure the future of Healesville Hospital, which I know is important for the community.” Ms Brennan said she would like to meet people in their own communities to hear what issues are important to them and that she would be travelling around the electorate to campaign. The Victorian Greens Party, meanwhile, said that nominations for pre-selection would open in February, and that its candidate for Eildon would be announced in April.

Rubbish was seen strewn across the grass near the seating area at Healesville’s new skate park, and both park users and council aren’t pleased. 112752 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM
New park left trashed By JESSE GRAHAM ALMOST two weeks before its official opening, the new Healesville Skate Park has been left trashed by some of its users. Everything from drink and food containers through to empty matchboxes was left near the seating area at the new Don Road skate park when the Mail visited the site on Friday 10 January. Constructed late last year, the park was opened around December, pending the official opening set for 23 January. Healesville resident John Crifo, who visited the park with his son on Friday 10 January for the first time, said the amassed rubbish was disgusting. “The council is building these spaces for the kids to play and they should respect them,”
Mr Crifo said. “You get a lot of tourists in Healesville - if they want to bring their kids to the skate park, they might not stop when they see the rubbish lying around,” he said. A group of skaters at the park said they were disgusted to see the area covered in rubbish so quickly, and suggested that the one bin provided might not be adequate. However, Yarra Ranges Council’s acting director of Environment and Engineering, Jane Sinnamon, said the council suspected the bins weren’t being used by skate park patrons. “Council has a regular bin collection service, which empties bins at Queen’s Park on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday
each week,” she said. “Council’s parks team patrol Queen’s Park on a regular basis during weekdays and collect any rubbish lying on the ground,” she said, adding that the bin had not been full on collection days, according to feedback from council’s waste collection team, “Council is monitoring the new facility and will work with the Youth Services team to address behavioural issues - it appears the bin is not being used by park users,” she said. What do you think of the rubbish at the skate park in Healesville? Do you have a similar story in your town? No harm done IN reply to Peter Broman (Sculpted Standards, Mail 17 December). First of all, Peter, I would like you to get your facts right. We were in our well-built sheds (not make-shift buildings) for 15, not 16 years. Those buildings are now gone, thanks to you and others like you. The property had been cleaned up prior to the demolition. We weren’t hurting anybody, and no-one could see us. I agree Mr Prudhoe should be allowed to keep his house. It is his property after all. You need to get a life Peter Broman and stop thinking you own this whole mountain. Look in your own backyard before you complain. Carol Gallagher, Healesville.

Pages from the past Healesville Guardian 6 January 1934 The holidays at Healesville IDEAL weather was experienced at Healesville for the holiday period and the district was exceptionally well patronised by visitors. It was the most successful holiday season for many years. The new public tennis courts in Queen’s Park were opened just before Christmas and were used throughout the holidays. The Healesville Tourist Association held successful dances in the Palais each night. The Memorial Hall talkies drew capacity audiences each night. Yarra Glen THE necessary guarantee having been finalised, it is anticipated that the State Electricity Commission will extend the transmission mains to Yarra Glen early in the coming month. Due to the action of flood water the site of the Yarra usually used as a swimming pool is extremely dangerous this year. Two locals had a narrow escape from drowning during the holidays.
Mounted Constable C.J. Elliot of Yarra Glen has received notice of his appointment as a first-class constable. Gratification is expressed that he will remain in Yarra Glen. Guest House Report MR. and Mrs. Frost of the popular guest house ‘Log Cabin’ reported excellent patronage during the holidays. The New Year house party at ‘The Wattles’ Healesville was a particularly happy one. It featured tennis croquet, driving and hiking by day and music and dancing by night. Mr. F.J. Roberts reported that the holiday season was one of the most enjoyable ever experienced at ‘Doogalook’. Healesville Guardian 13 January 1934 Healesville in Review by Cr. S.B. Mowie A FAIR amount of work has been started in the shire namely the Yarra Glen Road, which has been carried out by the Country Roads Board. Warburton Mail January 17 1964 Holidays THE holidays were the quietest on re-
cord for the Upper Yarra district. Although thousands of holidaymakers and day trippers patronised the area there was no strife of any kind. There was not a single road accident reported to the police at either Warburton or Yarra Junction. Business people in Warburton were more than satisfied with their holiday turnover. At one stage it looked like being a lean Christmas, but the tills started to click in earnest on Christmas Eve and did not stop ringing until after the holidays. Round Up MR. Allan (Mick) Taylor passed away at a private hospital in Mentone at the age of 59 years. Mick, a former resident of Yarra Junction has the reputation of being one of the best footballers the Upper Yarra has ever seen. He and his wife have lived at Castlemaine since leaving Yarra Junction where Mick was the popular licensee of the Railway Hotel. Powelltown Store Burnt to Ground MCLAREN’S general store at Powelltown was burnt to the ground shortly af-
ter midnight on Thursday of last week. Only a small quantity of stock was saved and the total damage is estimated at something like £10,000. The only occupant of the premises was the proprietor of the store, Mr. Arthur McLaren who was asleep. He awoke with a start realising that the store was on fire, grabbed his clothes and made a hasty exit. McLaren’s Store has been a landmark at Powelltown for over half a century. From time to time the original store has been enlarged to cater for the district’s growing needs. The McLaren family has been associated with the business, a licensed emporium since its existence. Mr McLaren will carry on in a makeshift premises until something definite is decided about rebuilding the store. The cause of the fire is unknown. - Contributed by Ellena Biggs

Fire brigade crews urge residents to check they are prepared for the bushfire season. 110207
Plan, prepare, check again YOU’VE cleared the gutters, cut back the grass and tackled the undergrowth – but that might not mean that you are fully prepared for fire this summer. CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said research showed Victorians were great at carrying out the easy to do preparation tasks in the lead-up to the fire season. “But it’s actions like talking to your CFA brigade about the risk where you live and making a decision with your family about when you’ll leave and where you’ll go that could save your life,” he said. Fire risk varies from city fringe areas next to grassland to rural areas close to grass or bushland. For information on the risk in your area and tips on leaving early, you can talk to your local CFA brigade or visit cfa. vic.gov.au. Fire planning and preparation should include a conversation with your household at
the start of summer about when you will leave before a fire and where you will go. You also need to decide where you will shelter if you get caught out and cannot leave your property or area. “Make sure everyone you live with knows these plans, so you’re all clear about what you’ll do on a fire risk day,” Mr Ferguson said. “You should also pack an emergency kit at the start of summer so you’re ready to go any time. “This should include important paperwork and essentials like mobile phones, medications, change of clothes and water. If your kit is already packed, it’s easier to grab it and go. “Finally, remember to talk to friends, family and neighbours who may need help leaving early before a fire,” he said. “The responsibility for surviving the fire season is shared between emergency services and the community – we
allshare the responsibility for our community’s safety,” he said. Plan and prepare for fire this summer: - Do you understand the fire risk where you live? Talk to your local CFA brigade and find out your level of risk, or visit cfa.vic.gov.au - Talk to your household about what you’re going to do on a fire risk day, where you’ll go and when you’ll leave. - Pack an emergency kit so you’re ready to go. - Download the FireReady smartphone app. - Plan ahead so you don’t have to make decisions at the last minute. For more information on planning and preparation this summer, go to cfa.vic.gov.au or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

Motoring in memor y By JESSE GRAHAM MOTORISTS from the Yarra Ranges and beyond are being asked to lend their wheels to a good cause next month as the upcoming Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise draws nearer. The annual cruise aims to raise money for Healesville CFA and provide an afternoon of reflection on the tragedy that struck the Yarra Ranges and surrounds on 7 February five years ago. Drivers will depart from Lilydale Industrial Park’s car park at 3pm on Saturday 1 February, making their way down the highway to Yarra Glen, then through Toolangi and Chum Creek, before finishing in Healesville about 50 minutes later. The cruise finishes at Healesville Railway Station where cars will be on display from 4pm, and Exploded View will be performing live from 4.30pm, before a Remembrance Ceremony at 5.30pm. Event organiser Stacey BennettKinsmore said the event raised about $10,000 last year and that she hopes it will again this year. She said that the cruise, which
started in memory of Kate Ansett and Steve Fisher, who died during Black Saturday, provides an atmosphere and a space to help reflect on the fires and the time that has passed. “It’s something you can’t explain - you have to come along and experience it for yourself,” she said. “Cruising through the towns, you know you’re in a big group and that you’re there for the same reason. “When we talk to people, they say they’re looking forward to it it’s a chance to pay their respects and show that we still haven’t forgotten.” Stacey said all motorists can take part, not just car enthusiasts or vintage car owners, and that she hoped to see about 500 cars in this year’s cruise. Food and drinks will be on sale at the event, along with train-rides running from the railway station, and all money raised will be donated to Healesville CFA. For more information, contact Stacey by calling 0421 321 203, or email bsrcruise@yahoo.com.au. Entry to the cruise is $10 per vehicle, paid at the meeting point on the day or prior, if organised via email.

Rainfall patchy reports DECEMBER rainfall was up dramatically in December for Healesville, with Alma Mitchell recording 78.3mm over 14 days, compared with 31.6mm over 12 days in 2012. The total rainfall for 2013, however, was 792.6mm, down from 1037.4mm in 2012. In Hoddles Creek, rain was up as well, with 90mm recorded over eight days by Doug Armstrong, compared to 61mm over 13 days the year before against an average December rainfall of 103mm. Total rainfall in 2013 was recorded by Mr Armstrong at 1228mm, down from 1296 in 2012.
Good vibe for fire recovery $9.5 million per year in the local economy, which will assist with the town’s regeneration following the Black Saturday bushfires. Mr Ryan said that a $2 million redevelopment of the Marysville Golf and Bowls Club will also help the town recover and give tourists even more reasons to stop on their way through. “The clubhouse was one of the few buildings in the town to survive Black Saturday - however, the clubhouse building needed to be refreshed and reinvigorated,” he said. “The project involves the demolition of the western end of the clubhouse and construction of a new function room that will accommodate more than 200 people standing and 100 people seated.” The clubhouse redevelopment is expected to create five full-time jobs when completed, and Ms McLeish and Mr Ryan joined club president Ken Whittingham in turning the sod on 29 November last year. Money for the redevelopment has come from the State Government, which spent $1.45 million, along with $523,213 from the Marysville and Triangle Community Bushfire Relief Fund - the remaining funds will be provided by the Marysville Community Golf and Bowls Club.

RECOVERY from Black Saturday continues for Marysville almost five years on, with a new conference centre and a golf and bowls clubhouse being developed to boost tourism in the area. The construction on Marysville’s $28 million Vibe Hotel and Conference Centre is expected to finish this year with doors set to open in spring and an influx of new jobs to accompany it. Seymour MP Cindy McLeish inspected the progress of the construction with Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan late last year, and said the progress is well on track. Ms McLeish said the conference centre will create 85 full-time jobs during construction and more than 60 full-time jobs once the hotel is running, along with generating tourism flow through the town. “It will play a great part in attracting visitors back to Marysville to see other drawcards, like the magnificent Steavenson Falls, Gallipoli Park and to engage in the summer and winter-time activities that are associated with Lake Mountain,” she said. She said the total benefit of the centre will be a boost of up to

CARPET can brighten up a dark room or tone down a space that is too light. Some people use it in the garden, while others want it on the ceiling. Whatever the need, Upper Yarra Carpets offers customers the best range at a reasonable price with exceptional service. It is the only floor covering business in the Upper Yarra and looks after domestic and commercial customers across the valley and beyond into the outer eastern suburbs. Trevor Hanley and partner Linda Thomas took over the 24-year-old business in 2007, bringing a wealth of knowledge and a strong team of carpet layers. Trevor, who has worked in the carpet industry since 1989, said they went anywhere and everywhere. “We’ve worked extensively throughout the valley and regions including a number of commercial jobs such as the Home Hotel and the Upper Yarra RSL, CFA stations and many local schools,” he said. “We also look after a lot
of rental properties up here through the estate agents.” He said his team covered any space, from one room to the entire house. “We like to help people with the whole process - the customer comes in, we educate them on the carpets and their choices and then I go out and measure and quote the space,” he said. “We’re always looking for fresh ideas and searching for the latest styles to inform our customers on the best choices for their floor for their lifestyle.” Trevor said there were so many options for people’s floors and not just carpet. They do vinyl, floating floors and vinyl planks, as well as a range of environmentally sound carpet - with 30 per cent of the yarn made from corn extract. Their Green range is very popular and selling extremely well. He said the range of rugs was always changing, with a variety of traditional, modern and even “shaggies”. “Rugs are like paintings ... people are more likely to impulsively buy them if they see something they like,” he said. “We also have a large cata-
logue range so if we don’t have something we can get it.” Upper Yarra Carpets also sells window blinds and shades in a range of different materials and colours. Trevor said the specials weren’t just those items off-the-shelf, but also carpet and vinyl short ends. “We have a lot of quality vinyl short ends of different sizes, massively reduced in price, which are perfect to fit out smaller rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms,” he said. On price, Trevor said the business was more than competitive. “We will match, and in most cases beat, any of our competitors’ prices,” he said. “So don’t waste your time, petrol, money or energy going down the line - the best prices are right here, local.” So be it floor coverings, curtains or blinds, the dedicated team at Upper Yarra Carpets can help clients find the best product at the right price. Upper Yarra Carpets is located at Shop 3-4, The Arcade, Yarra Junction, and also has a big warehouse that stocks an even larger range of carpets. Inquiries can be made on 5967 2155.

PUBLIC NOTICES
Need Cash? Fox control – Lake Eildon National Park, Big River State forest, Rubicon State forest, Cathedral Range State Park, Marysville State forest, Yarra Ranges National Park and Toolangi State forest The Department of Environment and Primary Industries and Parks Victoria are committed to protecting and enhancing the natural values of parks, reserves and state forests across the state. Examples of this conservation management are the control of introduced plant and animal species which can impact on these values. As part of an ongoing strategy, the Department of Environment and Primary Industries will be laying buried baits containing sodium luroacetate (1080 poison) on public land for the control of foxes. Baiting will commence Monday 13th January 2014 and will continue until Friday 19th December 2014. Baits will be laid at strategic sites and other known areas of fox habitat within the above mentioned forests and parks, and within the vicinity of townships Eildon, Rubicon, Taggerty, Buxton, Marysville, Narbethong, Healesville, Warburton and Toolangi. 1080 poison signs will be posted throughout the baited areas and members of the public who are living, visiting or working in the above named areas are advised to take particular care not to disturb or interfere with bait stations. Domestic dogs and cats are particularly susceptible to 1080 poison and should be under efective control, muzzled or kept away from the poisoned areas. Further details may be obtained by contacting Emily Borton at the Department of Environment and Primary Industries at Alexandra on (03) 5772 0200. www.depi.vic.gov.au Customer Service Centre 136 186 C1104857-JL51-13

Field opens for finals WITH the Christmas hiatus over, cricketers in the Yarra Valley returned to the field on Saturday refreshed and eager to impress in the run towards finals. An intriguing battle for finals positions has opened up in the DJ Strachan Shield with seven teams well and truly capable of featuring in finals action. With two one day games to kick things off, the teams don’t have long to press their claims. In the match of the round, third placed Coldstream hosted top of the ladder Healesville. Both sides entered the game at opposite ends of the form tree as Healesville has taken all before it in the first half of the season, while Coldstream hit a sizeable hurdle in its run into Christmas winning only one of its last four games. Coldstream batted first and it was star opening bat Danny Adams (41) who lead from the front in an exceptional batting performance from the home side. Contributions from youngster Bailey Fritsch (27) and the hard hitting Mathew Stark (31) ensured the Crocs scored a formidable 8/194 at the Swamp, a venue where boundaries don’t readily come flying off the bat. The consistent Chance Burridge lead from the front with some notable absentees from the Bloods’ bowling attack. Healesville’s reply was going to be heavily reliant on its opening pair of Geoff Stock and Johnny Heywood, and the former built a significant foundation on which his team could build upon. The experienced Brian Horner (27) and a late contribution from Burridge (35) gave the home side some headaches, but the Bloods were always one step behind in their chase and eventually fell 34 runs short of their target falling to be all out on 160. Stark braved the early onslaught from Stock to collect 3/40, while he was well supported by Jamie Pegg (2/7) and captain Matt Jonson (2/29) who both picked up key wickets to
ensure the Bloods’ chase continued to falter. After a shaky start to the season, Seville’s ability to find a way to win despite indifferent form saw it reach second position at Christmas, and with the opportunity to improve on many aspects of its game, sees it as the danger team leading into the finals. The Blues hosted Woori Yallock which has shown glimpses of its potential as a team, but its inconsistencies saw it outside the top four and with a point to prove. The home side opened the batting and found the going tough against the talented opening pairing of Simon Young (5/36) and Jackson Wright (2/19). The pair raced through Seville’s top order, and with the ground on the slow side, the Blues task was made all the more difficult. Contributions from returning premiership players Ranga Yasalal (40) and Gary Frankovic (19) ensured the home side would bat out their allotted overs, however a score of 9/138 posed a chaseable target for the eager Tigers. Woori Yallock’s chase started with an excellent battle between bat and ball. Unfortunately for the Tigers, no batsman could build on their starts, and despite a valiant 23 not out from Ryan Smith, the tail lacked wag against the experience and guile of Andy Kay (3/12) and his crew, with Woori Yallock eventually dismissed for a disappointing 111. In the final game of the round, Warburton-Millgrove hosted neighbours Yarra Junction in a crucial game where the winner would stay within striking distance of the top four. The home side batted first and looked in control from the outset. Brilliant half centuries from captain Troy Murphy (56) and the classy Jason Coghlan (53) had the innings off to a brisk start and some lusty hitting in the closing overs saw the Burras set an impressive total of 9/194. Dale Robertson (4/37) battled gamely with the ball, but he
lacked any significant support. Yarra Junction was always going to be battling in reply, but it made a bright enough start with the experienced Dan Lever (28) and impressive youngster Marcel Kocher (22) giving the Eagles the best start. The Christmas school holidays offer the opportunity for the Valley’s best young cricketers to show their wares against other talented youngsters in the annual VMCU Representative carnivals. The teams from the Yarra Valley have had a successful start to the competition with two of the teams all but securing quarter final births. The Under 16 team has started with an impressive three wins from four games, and a win against South East on Monday would see the team secure a home quarter final. Healesville’s Dale Senior has been the standout with both the bat (180 runs) and the ball (seven wickets). Healesville’s Blake Binion and Coldstream’s Liam Pickett have formed a useful opening partnership, often getting their side off to a solid start. The Under 14s have found the going a little tougher, but with two wins from their four games they have the opportunity to secure their place in the quarter finals with a win on Monday against Mornington Peninsula CA. For the youngest stars, the Under 12s, in a team performance, the team has been unlucky not to record more than one win from its four games. The players have enjoyed the competition so far, with most of them experiencing the challenge of representative cricket for the first time. The competitions conclude this week with the finals pool game on Monday, followed by quarter finals and semi finals, with grand finals on Sunday. DJ Strachan Shield Seville 9/138 (R. Yasalal 40, G. Crowds take a spin for Cup A FORMER champion had hopes for a consecutive win dashed as intense racing action hit the track at Healesville last weekend. About 3500 people attended the Healesville Cup racing event on 11 January at the Healesville race track with riders facing off in six races. Last year’s cup winner, Guadalcanal, placed sixth in the drawcard 1650 metre event, losing to Spinning Tune, who was ridden by premiershipwinning picnic rider Adam Bodey. The cup winner took home $4000, while winners of the other races won $3000. President of Healesville Amateur Racing Club David Purcell said that he was thrilled with the magnitude of the crowd which included waves of families and fresh-faced visitors to the valley. “It was an exceptional day - it exceeded our expectations. We were thrilled with the response by the public, by the horse trainers and jockeys,” he said. The annual event included children’s activities, such as running races, pony rides, mini-golf and an animal farm, along with a vintage hot rod display for bigger kids. The results for the day were: Race one: 1 Estambul or Bust, 2 Spirit Eyes, 3 Vixenite, 4 The Blue Angel, 5 Floatlikabutterfly, 6 Keltic Light. SOUTH Korean maker Hyundai continues to advance into the field of European technology, with several features in the just announced 2014 Hyundai i40 sedan and wagon being borrowed from the upmarket German marques. Chief among these is a smart feature that allows hands-free operation of the tailgate. This automatically opens the powered tailgate when someone with the car’s smart key enters the ‘detection zone’ (500 to 1000 mm behind the tailgate) and remains there for at least three seconds. So that no one is taken by surprise by the automatically opening tailgate, a buzzer sounds and the vehicle’s hazard lights flash prior to the tailgate opening. Operation of the Hyundai Smart Tailgate function can be cancelled at any time by pressing any button on the proximity smart key or it can be permanently turned off if you’re not keen on it. Features like Smart Parking Assist and Lane Departure Warning and Assist were already standard on the Hyundai i40 and this new tailgate opening system adds to the technology package. All 2014 models Hyundai i40 now have an all-new Drive Mode Select system that lets the driver to choose from Normal, Eco, or Sports mode to customise the drive ‘feel’ to best meet the environment. As the name suggests, ‘Normal’ mode is most suited for day-to-day driving, ‘Eco’ mode reprograms automatic
