Mac attack By REBECCA BILLS IN A two-year battle, local identities the Tecoma 8 have held strong to their beliefs and taken on McDonald’s Australia. The group has been named the Mail’s 2013 Issue of the Year. Shane, Marcia, Karl, Ava, Janine, Mark, Martha and Jude, known as the Tecoma 8, have all donated
2013 ISSUE OF THE YEAR their time and energy into the picketing efforts at the Tecoma McDonald’s site in the hope of protecting their town against the organisation.
While the Mail remains unbiased towards controversial issues such as the Tecoma McDonald’s, the Tecoma 8’s sheer passion and
love for the area won them their title. Last year the Mail also awarded local identity David Jewell, another strong anti-Tecoma McDonald’s advocate, the award. The Tecoma 8’s notorious antics and actions drew widespread media attention from not only around the country but the world. The group faced a large court case earlier in the year after their
input into the Tecoma protests throughout 2013 which continued to push the boundaries. On 1 July, McDonald’s attempted to demolish the old Hazelvale Dairy building where members of the Tecoma 8 established themselves on the roof of the dairy delaying the demolition process. Continued page 3w

Between February and September, a 16-year-old boy was abducted by an unknown man from the Heatherdale railway station and taken to an unknown property in Ferntree Gully. The man supplied the teen with alcohol before threatening him with a knife and sexually assaulting him. Following a review on unsolved sex crimes in the eastern suburbs, investigators believe the same man four other sexual assaults is responsible for committed against teenage males since 1980. The victims were approached at either a pool hall or at local shopping centres. Detective Senior Constable said the similarities included Brett Regan a man offering the teenage victims alcohol and cannabis prior to driving them to Ferntree Gully area and properties in the sexually assaulting them.

“WATCH this roundabout,” said Monbulk Business Network President John Coleman after the Monbulk Christmas Tree was ordered to be taken down. The four-metre high controversial Christmas tree on Main Road/Jordan Road roundabout was constructed by local artist Joost Bakker. It was taken down on Friday night after orders from VicRoads deemed the site ‘unsafe’. VicRoads regional director Adam Maguire said the sculpture was installed without the consent of VicRobe ads or the council and needed to removed for safety reasons. “It was blocking sight lines for motorists using the intersection,” he said. “In addition, there were unintended consequences of people crossing the road to get close to the sculpture, putting themselves at risk of being inthe weekend. volved in an accident. IT WAS a tumultuous year at the Mail in 2013 but the dedicated community spirit continued to shine as residents spoke up for their townships. At the beginning of the year the Mail covered the devastating Christmas Day fire that destroyed Olinda’s Snooty Fox restaurant. The ongoing Tecoma McDonald’s saga kept residents very vocal all year after building permits and construction works on the site continued. World-wide media attention was gained after the town took on the fast-food giant to try to stop the restaurant being built. Steaming into town was former Prime Minster Kevin Rudd on his election campaign trail taking him on a trip down memory lane at Belgrave’s Puffing Billy station. Pledging $3.1million to build a discovery centre at Emerald Park Lake, Mr Rudd surprised passengers with his short visit. The fight to save melanoma
sufferer and Macclesfield man Nick Auden from the advanced stage four skin cancer heated up in a bid to get him access to a Merck PD-1 drug trial in the United States of America. Gaining world-wide coverage in the Save Locky’s Dad campaign and despite their efforts, Mr Auden sadly lost his battle in late November. Hills residents were angered after 50 Monterey Cypress trees were removed from Emerald’s Worrell Reserve reportedly without consultation – the trees had been at the reserve for 80 years. A groundswell of support to save the Olinda Pool brewed in the area as the Mail broke the news that the Yarra Ranges Council had decided to close the premises permanently after irreparable cracks were found. And in sport, Belgrave South cricket star Glenn Maxwell earned a $1 million pay day after being snapped up by the Indian Premier League player auction. Sporting success in the hills continued when Upper Ferntree
Gully woman Carmen Marton kicked her way to the top becoming the first Australian to win a world championship in taekwondo. The super martial-artists made history in the women’s 62 kilogram division in Mexico after defeating Korean Kim HwiLang. Emerald burpee basher Julie ‘Hoffy’ Hoffmann continued the sporting success in the hills after setting the world record doing 7684 burpees in just 24 hours. Tour de France cyclist and local Selby athlete Simon Clarke rode into town to train at the recently re-opened Monbulk Aquatic Centre over his summer training period. The pool, a fixture of the town for about 40 years, underwent a complete overhaul. Victorian Premier Denis Napthine left soccer enthusiasts across the Yarra Ranges one step closer to emulating their A-League heroes after providing $650,000 to develop stage one of the new Yarra Ranges Regional Soccer Centre.

Mr Coleman is passionate about his town, always happy and willing to help out in advocating on behalf of all business owners in Monbulk and the surrounding suburbs of Kallista, Silvan and The Patch. He is also the owner of Monbulk

Maria McCarthy YARRA Ranges Deputy Mayor, Billanook Ward councillor Maria McCarthy, has grown up in the hills. This last year history was made when Fiona McAllister became Yarra Ranges Mayor and Cr McCarthy was elected Deputy Mayor – the first time ever two women have held the positions together. After being elected, Cr McCarthy said she would make sure she was inclusive, open and a good representative of the Yarra Ranges Council over the coming months. Cr McCarthy has served on various local committees including Yarra
Ranges Ratepayers Assocication, Melba Support Services, Yarra Ranges Italian Cultural Group, Mount Evelyn Street Festival, Friends of Lilydale Museum Trust and the Lilydale Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Growing up, Cr McCarthy worked in her parents’ fish and chip shop in Lilydale which led to her running her own business in Lilydale for 20 years. Cr McCarthy does not mind a little fun in the name of community spirit dressing up as a clown at last year’s Mount Evelyn Street Fair to greet locals.
Roger Boness MOUNT EVELYN Returned Services League (RSL) president Roger Boness has worked tirelessly all year planning events for the town. Mr Boness, who served in the Royal
Australia Artillery as a forward observer during he Vietnam War, recognises that it is important that the community of Mount Evelyn understands the significant contribution that all local soldiers have played in various wars. The well known community figure has worked hard to acquire a decommissioned cannon for the town, a new memorial garden for the town along with many other projects to keep the RSL an active part of the local community. Continuing to partner with local schools, Mr Boness has a strong community focus that relays in all the projects that are completed through the Mount Evelyn RSL. Mr Boness is always out and about, be it talking at schools or other events in the local community and around the state.
On Tuesday 16 July, 2013, McDonald’s served papers on the Tecoma 8 that summoned them to appear in the Supreme Court on 18 July, 2013. Martha stated on the Tecoma 8 website that she had been silenced by the Supreme Court with her right to free speech. “I have the system’s hand over my mouth and threatening me if I break free and talk – I could be financially damaged or incarcerated for allowing a multinational corporation,” she said. “To have this over members of a small community as punishment for protesting, I am disgusted. “I have been silenced and I will not stand for it.” Tecoma 8 member Ava said that she had never done anything like it before, but she would do anything to stop the development as it was so inappropriate in Tecoma - so did Karl stating in his 57 years, he never dreamt of breaking the law. The legal case between the protesters and the fastfood outlet McDonald’s was later resolved following a court-ordered mediation held in Melbourne on 29 October 2013. In a joint statement from Maurice Blackburn, McDonald’s Australia said it has agreed to discontinue the proceedings and is not seeking any legal costs from the defendants. “In exchange, the defendants have agreed personally and on behalf of those they represent not to undertake activities which may constitute trespass or nuisance until 30 June 2014.” Head of Maurice Blackburn’s social justice practice Elizabeth O’Shea said the agreement is a significant relief for the Tecoma 8 who found the case to be extremely stressful. Despite the year’s events, the Tecoma 8 say they still remain dedicated and passionate to the No McDonald’s in Tecoma cause.

Cyclist sent flying over bonnet in U-turn hit-run smash...
Lucky to be alive mits he won’t be back on the bike for a while yet. He still needs crutches to walk, his leg is still badly bruised and swollen. “I’m lucky to be alive,” he said. “I would have ended up 20 metres from where I was hit. It’s a good advertisement for people to wear a helmet, that’s for sure. “I just can’t believe that someone could drive off – he would have seen me, I flew across his bonnet.”

Mr Miton said he was able to get a description of a car, a red Toyota Camry wagon, and gave the registration details to the police. But the owner of the car has told police he wasn’t driving and didn’t know who was. “I didn’t see the driver, but I know that was the car,” he said. “So I’m hoping someone saw the driver, who it was, or whether they noticed them driving erratically be-

NEEDING more than 30 stitches to mend a gaping hole left in his leg wasn’t exactly how Brendon Miton thought he would begin the new year. He didn’t think he would be hit by a car while riding his bike and left on the side of the road in Olinda on New Year’s Day either. Mr Miton was riding downhill along Olinda – Monbulk Road in
Olinda not long before 9.30am when he noticed a car suddenly pulling into the left hand shoulder of the road without slowing down before swinging the car into a U-turn in front of him. “I flew across the bonnet of the car and landed on the other side of the car,” he said. “The car then backed up and drove around me and took off.” A keen cyclist, Mr Miton revisited the site of the crash on Friday, but ad-

By JODIE SYMONDS LOCAL artists are painting pictures for youth development. The tiffaney bishop COLLECTIVE (tbC) is run by artists to offer young people a funded working studio environment to locate their art practices. The tbC, located in Upwey, aims to launch the young artists’ careers. More than 40 local artists have contributed to the initiative using free space, materials, mentoring and access to participatory art projects. The initiative has included many artists to complete the projects. Several art projects are in production and development which are engaging young resident artists in local, national and even international artistic experiences.
“Whenever tbC paints a public space, tagging seems to abate or completely stop,” Ms Bishop said. The most recent large scale project to be completed by tbC was the Street Art painting along the Upwey Skate Park. The Upwey project was funded by the Yarra Ranges Council with support from Upwey township as well as the community. “Actively connecting and engaging with young people in our hills communities has become an important priority for tbC,” “Over the past 18 months projects like this one at Upwey have engaged a significant number of young people in long-term, positive ways with more respect for public property,” she said. tbC is working on another art project in Belgrave to paint on the rear of Burwood Highway shop buildings.
The date for the commencement week for your collection can be found on the online MAPS of the Yarra Ranges website www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au by entering your address or by contacting the Yarra Ranges Council on 1300 368 333.

Safer places set By KATH GANNAWAY BURRINJA in Upwey is one of four new Neighbourhood Safer Places (NSPs) designated by Yarra Ranges Council. The cultural centre was added, along with Healesville RACV Club, Millgrove Recreation Reserve and Woori Yallock Reserve, to the shire’s current 11 NSPs at Yarra Ranges Council’s 10 December meeting. But it was not without discussion about whether they should be more correctly called Places of Last Resort.
Councillor Samantha Dunn said calling the designated buildings or areas Neighbourhood Safer Places sent the wrong message to the community. She welcomed Mayor Fiona McAllister’s move to have the matter, originally listed as a confidential item, discussed openly before the gallery. “I will not be happy until these are called Places of Last Resort - to call them Neighbourhood Safer Places is completely flawed,” she said. “They are not safe, and this gives a completely wrong message.”
She said the council should continue to push for the more accurate description, but said it was good to see another four places had been assessed as appropriate for designation. “I think residents will be pleased to see more across the shire, but there is no guarantee of survival if you use one of these places, so it is always with mixed feelings when we designate these that we do need to emphasise there are no guarantees.” Cr McAllister said the designation of NSPs was a critical issue for the
Yarra Ranges communities and that there had been an incredible amount of work involved in making the 15 places available. The recommendation which was passed unanimously noted that the 11 current NSPs had passed the annual audit and so would remain designated for the coming fire danger period. The council is also required to provide signage at the sites and ensure the sites are maintained over the fire danger period. The report is to be made available to the public, minus any confidential information.

By JODIE SYMONDS CAME one, came all, Macclesfield Primary School’s market had it all. The day finally came for Macclesfield Primary School grade five and six students as their annual Enterprise Market was held on Friday 6 December.
Macclesfield raised more than $2000 in just two hours at the event. There were a number of stalls from popcorn popping to sponge throwing and even face painting. The grade five and six students were assigned a task to design a small business over a school term and then run the stall at the market.
Students were given the opportunity to choose their businesses based upon their interests and then were guided to structure the business. “It usually brings a big turn-out,” Macclesfield Primary School teacher Cheryl Grambau said. “The Enterprise Market is a great way for our students to learn about
business management and especially team work,” she said. A portion of the money would go to the Grade 6 formal and the rest would support a number of charities. This year’s event supported World Vision in the Philippines to help those who are visually impaired.

Teen crime spree By JESSE GRAHAM
EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST INVITED Cafe tenancy for Cardinia Shire Council civic centre cafe An outstanding opportunity exists for a savvy business operator to be one of the pioneers of the vibrant Officer town centre and see their investment grow over time.
Gutted - one of the cars that was destroyed on New Year’s Eve by two Mooroolbark teenagers. 112741 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM has been remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Children’s Court, while the 14-year-old has been bailed to appear at the Ringwood Children’s Court in February. Sen Det Brown said that theycaused incredible amounts of damage over a short period of time, in what could only be called a “crime spree”. “Where they couldn’t steal, they damaged,” he said. “It was the same with the cars - if they didn’t steal anything, they burnt them.” The youths have been charged with three counts of arson, burglary, criminal damage and a number of thefts from motor cars. Sen Det Brown said the results weren’t final, but that the
damage was expected to be somewhere around $100,000. He remarked that the youths only attacked cars that were left unlocked, and said they tried around 100 doors throughout the evening. “Some of the cars, they had tried to damage ignitions, but they haven’t forced entry to any of them,” Sen Det Brown said. He urged all residents to keep their cars safely locked overnight or when not attended and to not leave valuables in sight or in vulnerable places. Sen Det Brown said that he had recovered some stolen items from the teens and that anyone who thinks their car may have been robbed on the night should contact Lilydale Police on 9739 2300.
Cardinia Shire Council is inviting expressions of interest from experienced catering businesses and/or social enterprises to fit-out, lease and operate a cafe on the ground floor of its new civic centre based in Officer. IT was a New Year’s crime spree through Badger Creek that left power outages, smashed windows and burnt-out cars in its wake. According to police, two Mooroolbark youths, aged 14 and 16 years, visited Healesville on 31 December to see one of the pair’s girlfriends, shortly before embarking on a nightlong spree that caused around $100,000 in damage to the surrounding area. The youths entered around 10 parked cars that were left unlocked around Badger Creek, stealing when they could and causing damage when they could not. The teenagers stole a car and, throughout the night, smashed windows in at the Badger Creek Primary School, kicked in the door of the Badger Creek Old School and sprayed graffiti on the blackboard and burgled the nearby milk bar. The coup de grace for the teenagers on the night was when they set fire to two cars, failing to light a third. A delivery van and a mobile-home-type van were both completely destroyed, and the fire from the mobile-home van on Bluegum Avenue blew a gas tank inside the vehicle’s kitchen area. The bottles exploded and the fire damaged overhead powerlines, leaving residents in surrounding area in the dark for around 18 hours. Lilydale Police Senior Detective Ian Brown said the pair was arrested - the 16-year-old

Fact checking IN response to Peter Harris’s letter regarding Swinburne Lilydale in last week’s Mail, I note he forgot to mention that he is the endorsed Labor candidate for Evelyn at the next State Election. Mr Harris’s approach to dealing with the facts sums up Labor’s handling of the Swinburne issue. Firstly, it was the then Labor government in 2009 who scrapped the old Swinburne University Act that required them to keep a campus in the outer east. Secondly, vocational and education training funding has been increased by $1 billion since we came to government. Thirdly, Yarra Ranges Council has worked tirelessly with former Swinburne Lilydale deputy vice-chancellor Professor Barbara van Ernst AM and others in the sector to provide further education for our future generations. Labor has no plan to attract a higher education provider to the Yarra Ranges. They would rather lock up the site and let it rot for their own political gain. I suggest that if Labor was truly concerned about the community, James Merlino and Shaun Leane would start working on behalf of our community and not just for their union mates. Christine Fyffe MP, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, State Member for Evelyn,

This Summer we’re making further improvements to your network. As we do so, you’ll notice changes to your normal Metro services while we undertake major construction works to remove two level crossings in Mitcham. We thank you for your patience as we work to make your network even better.
HOW many of those who intended feasting on turkey on Christmas Day gave a thought to the suffering their “roast” is currently enduring for nothing but momentary tastebud pleasure? Three months of hell is the price these birds pay to satisfy our fickle desire. Right now in Australia, up to five million of them are fighting for space in stinking, gloomy, sunless, suffocating sheds that seem to grow increasingly smaller as the birds grow larger. Many are in chronic pain caused by debeaking; many are crippled, their legs unable to bear the weight of their abnormally heavy bod-
ies; lame and sick birds are dying a slow painful death from thirst and starvation. The brutal and violent climax of this suffering was, of course, their terrifying slaughter before Christmas. Is this really the way to treat our inoffensive fellow creatures at a time of “peace and goodwill” on earth? Jenny Moxham, Monbulk.
Jet upset I’M writing as in the last few months I’ve noticed that the Dandenong Ranges is under a passenger jet flight path with three to four jets at a time throughout the day and night. The noise intrusion disturbs the peace of the Dandenong Ranges which is renowned and loved for its natural beauty and tranquillity. My question to the Federal Government and Jason Wood our local Federal Member is why do we have this jet path going over the Dandenong Ranges spoiling the peace and quiet. Matthew Parker, Emerald.
Keep up the effort I LIKE to thank Mr Joost Bakker for the Christmas tree. I liked the sculpture and I am sorry you had to take it down. I appreciate all the time, money and effort you put into giving Monbulk this Christmas tree. Also our shop windows look fantastic. But where are our Christmas decorations in the Main Street? Did someone forget that Christmas was coming. I find that very sad. People like Mr Joost Bakker made a huge effort to give us a Christmas tree, like it or not 150 per cent for your effort, Joost. That’s more than I can say for some. I hope it gets better next year. N van Horick, Monbulk.

Architecturally designed and encased by nature, this absolutely stunning home is unique and inspiring. Soaring ceilings and a contemporary colour scheme connect the open plan kitchen and extensive living areas, which are highlighted by the use of spotted gum timber floors and sumptuous carpets. Striking walls of glass invite your eye into the various entertaining levels of the home, and entice the scenery indoors by clever decorative detailing to enhance the beautiful private surroundings. The substantial master suite will impress, looking onto a balcony creating the perfect place to ponder, while the essential ensuite and main bathrooms are tastefully renovated. Light floods into the generous sized bedrooms with clever use of glass filtering daylight down the hall. The galley style kitchen will please the fussiest chef, featuring gleaming SS appliances with ample bench space overlooking the superb entrance, lined with camellias ready to burst into colour, and water features adding to the garden splendour. Gently tiered, this private parcel is abundant with tree ferns, while a peaceful gully reveals Sassafras Creek babbling through the south east corner encouraging an array of wildlife to feel you are miles away. Perfectly positioned on 3947sqm (approx) accessed via gates down a meandering sealed drive with ample OSP, the feeling of seclusion will astound you, and yet still ideally close to Sassafras and Olinda village shops and cafes - only an inspection will truly reveal this treasure.
Stone pillars encase the original main entry of this classic weatherboard cottage, freshly painted in stunning tones to highlight the sash and picture windows that capture the 80 year old garden and mature plantings enclosing the property. Entering from Mills Ave down a private laneway reveals the 1950´s character home and direct entry from the paved drive to the upper level. Country Provincial styling flows throughout, complimented by a neutral decor and whites in tiles and cabinetry for a contemporary touch. The traditional hall and panelled doors lead to 3 bedrooms, including Master with BIR and WIR, central kitchen and superb open plan meals and living area to relax and enjoy the charming soul of this home, warmed by hydronic heating and the original open fireplace awaiting restoration! Private, yet an abundance of light so often sought in the hills is accentuated by high ceilings and double French Doors opening to the deep verandah, detailed by original fretwork and treetops views beyond. The fabulous option of home office or self contained apartment on the lower level! High Ceilings and private entry under the verandah, the floor plan allows for a bedroom and living with the kitchen and bathroom already renovated and colour palette in keeping with upstairs! Sport
 Connecting people with local sport…
A real taste of tennis WITH the Australian Open now in full swing, children in the Yarra Ranges can also get their taste of tennis with a clinic starting at the Upwey South Tennis Club. Locals Stuart and Diana Sutterby, who coach at Ferny Creek, Selby and Upwey South tennis clubs, are running the three-day clinic to give children of all ages and skill levels a go at the sport. “The three-day holiday clinic is a great introduction to the sport and acts as a taste tester for kids wishing to try tennis,” Mr Sutterby said. “Tennis is such a great game for life - it is fun, social and caters for all ages.” The clinic will run from Monday 20 January to Wednesday 22 January at the Upwey South Tennis Club, on Eloera Street. Beginner to intermediate players will be on court from 9am to 11.30am and intermediate to advanced players 11.30am to 2pm on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday will be an all-day tournament and barbecue. THE much-anticipated match of the round in Decoite Shield between South Belgrave and Mount Gate did not disappoint as the Gators got the chocolates with four balls to spare at the Belgrave South Rec Reserve. Dismissed in the 35th over for 133, South paid the price of not batting their full allotment of overs. Mount Gate were well on top until they lost Bunting, Hardy and Bowden, leaving the door open at 5/103 until a rear guard action required three runs from the last over for a hard-fought win.

AFTER the Christmas rush, Emerald Golf Club kicked back into life last Saturday with a threeman Ambrose event. Some brash predictions before and after play were heard, but there were some downcast golfers sort of blaming their partners while trying to look like they were supportive of them. With all players home and accounted for, it was the triumvirate of Dave Aitken, Peter Stevens and Dave Jennings (10) who stood tall, triumphant and smug when their net score of 53 was too good for the rest. In second place were Peter Glasscock, Broc Reynolds and Ken Sumsion (10.66) who managed to be on 53.33. They were followed at a respectful distance by Andrew Cutting, Ben Balfour and Dennis Fuller (6.83) on 56.16. Leigh Morison, P. Clowes and Allan Ecclestone (8.66) were next with 56.33. The trio of ladies who won the day were Constance Whitlock, Shirley Krummenacher and Kendra Hill who left the rest of the field in their collective wake. Dennis Fuller was nearest the pin on the 4th, Graeme White the 13th. On Wednesday when the Overly Faded Golfers (OFG) were on centre stage, a stroke event broke out where the original nine holes on the course was played twice. The format suited Ken Hill(16) down to the ground and he won with a net 59 from Sepp Krummenacher (28) next on 62 followed by Dennis Fuller (14) and Peter Clowes (18) both on 63. Next Saturday members roll up for the first of the VGL Monthly medals and, as usual, wild claims of an easy win have been heard but ignored with appropriate derision. Broc Reynolds the 7th, Allan Ecclestone the 12th and captain Andrew Cutting pocketed the pro pin dollars on the 18th. 1113824-RMB3-14
