Mr Franks arrived in Noosa in April last year, faced with the enormous task of steering us through the de-amalgamation process and establishing a new Noosa Council, ready to hit the ground running on January 1 this year. As Transfer Manager, appointed by Local Government Minister David Crisafulli, that is exactly what he did, and more. The Zimbabwean-born former Mackay Council CEO was the director of corporate services in Victoria’s Delatite Council when it was

carved up to allow Mansfield and Benalla to separate in 2002, so he knew what he was in for. Mr Franks put his hat in the ring for the job of CEO in Noosa and admitted he was disappointed he had not been given the role. He said he enjoyed his time in Noosa and the support he got from the community was incredible. Mr Franks has been a great supporter of Noosa Today. He was a very welcome guest at our first birthday party in May and has always made himself available to answer questions. JOLENE OGLE When it comes to alcohol-fuelled violence, Noosa is no different to any other community, according to Noosa MP Glen Elmes.

Speaking to Noosa Today, Mr Elmes said any place where there is drinking, there is a problem. “That’s just a sad fact of life,” Mr Elmes said. “There seems to be a difference between what happens these days outside a nightclub or a pub and what happened in my day.” Mr Elmes said while there were fights outside pubs and clubs 20 years ago, violence now seems to be fuelled by a mix of alcohol and illicit drugs and there “didn’t seem to be the same amount of protracted violence.” Mr Elmes’ comments come after local businessman Brian Hayes’ son was punched from behind during a night out on Hastings Street just before Christmas. Mr Elmes said he knows Mr Hayes and his family and said the attack was a tragedy. Mr Hayes said his son was approached by three men during a night out

While talking to the men, another approached from behind and hit Mr Hayes’ son in the jaw, knocking him to the ground. Mr Hayes said he never reported the attack to Police because his son didn’t know the offenders and there were no CCTV cameras or witnesses. “My son didn’t recognise his attackers and after

talking to one of the Police here that I have known for years, he just said it is difficult (to report an attack) when you don’t have any evidence,” Mr Hayes said. Mr Hayes is now calling for more Police on patrol and an upgrade in security measures on Hastings Street. “I think the bottom line is we need more Police representation on the streets

in the late evening/early morning times,” Mr Hayes said. According to Police statistics, reported assaults in Noosa Heads are down 4.5 per cent when compared to this time last year. Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said the decline in reported assaults is due to the combined efforts of venue owners and Police as well as media campaigns aimed at raising awareness of violence. “There’s also continuity in patrolling Police. I’ve been here for eight years. I know the beat and the locals. The same goes for my officers,” Snr Sgt McReight said. “We live here, too and we want the community to be safe.” Snr Sgt McReight said the combined community effort against assaults is paying off with this New Year’s Eve being one of the quietest he’s patrolled. “We are happy with the outcome. There was no real carnage,” he said. Snr Sgt McReight said patrols are rostered based on reported incidents and it was impossible to act on problems that aren’t brought to their attention. “I encourage everyone to report anything,” Snr Sgt McReight said.

Five times over the limit JOLENE OGLE Local hospitality worker Paul John Pettit pleaded guilty in Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday to driving while almost five times over the legal limit.

Police Prosecutor Jamie Baker said Pettit was arrested in December after police received reports of a car

mounting the kerb and driving into oncoming traffic. A breath analysis returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.240 per cent, the court heard. Mr Baker told the court Pettit had a previous conviction of driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.245 per cent in 2010. Pettit’s defence lawyer said his client had always worked in hospital-

ity and this is part of the problem. Magistrate Bernadette Callaghan sentenced Pettit to 12 months probation and a 12 month licence suspension. Pettit was also ordered to complete the Under the Limit drink-driving program and have an interlock device installed on his car at the end of his licence suspension. A conviction was also recorded.

Noosa woman feared for her life ISOBEL COLEMAN It was more a case of technology failure than Vorsprung durch Technik – Advancement through Technology - for Audi driver Amanda Stevens, who was left fearing for her life last week.

Heading home for lunch, Noosa businesswoman Ms Stevens got into her 2012 Audi Q3 as usual. But within minutes she was left gasping for air with the temperature inside the car soaring. The keyless-entry car had locked her in. It was 41 degrees outside and she did not have a phone to call for help. “I got in, shut the door, went to press the start button and a message came up saying ‘key not identified’,” Ms Stevens said. “All the doors locked themselves. I tried to wind down the windows and open the doors. When that didn’t work I started to panic. I was trapped. “Within a couple of minutes I was struggling to breathe inside the car, because it was parked in the sun.” Frantic – and with the horn not working, either - Ms Stevens starting screaming for help and waving to passers-by. “Luckily a man walking past realised what was happening and managed to open the door from the outside,” she said.

Ms Steven’s story has prompted another call for door release mechanisms to be fitted to vehicles with deadlocks. National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council executive director Ray Carroll said people were often trapped in cars because of deadlocks that were intended to deter thieves. ‘’As far as we’re concerned, they are a good idea,’’ he said. ‘’Many people smash a window to gain access to a car [but] if it’s deadlocked they can’t open the car - from that perspective, it’s a good idea.” 1323-103

NOOSA More workers coming to Noosa JIM FAGAN It’s an interesting reversal of accepted thought but more people come to work in Noosa from Maroochydore and Mooloobala than Noosa workers to those areas.

And it prompted Mayor Noel Playford to say at Monday’s meeting of Noosa Council: “In the past we’ve been told, ‘It’s all right for you lot in Noosa to have growth but Maroochydore is providing the jobs for Noosa Shire.’ Actually, the volume is the other way round.” The issue was raised by Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot who pointed out that in the Queensland Boundaries Commission report on de-amalgamation there was a document - the Sankey chart - which showed that in the Noosa-Noosaville, Sunshine-Peregian and Tewantin areas there was a considerable amount of traffic coming to work from the northern part of Maroochydore, Mooloolaba and Maroochy Coastal North area. “They are all coming to work in Noosa. There is a considerably higher level of people coming here than those leaving here and going to work elsewhere.”

If one goes down, then our systems are automatically carried on by the second data centre. “There is secure fingerprint identification access to the buildings. I’m told they even weigh people going in and weigh them coming out so they can’t walk out with any data or equipment they’re not supposed to! It’s a very secure environment.” At the meeting of Noosa Council on Monday, acting CEO, Peter Franks referred to the dedication of the council staff who put in long hours to fulfil all aspects of the transfer from Sunshine Coast Council. Asked how long it took to put in the new IT infrastructure, Mr Drydale said: “I’ve worked in projects which have taken up to two years to complete but we did this in four months. Effectively, we had from September to December to put the infrastructure in place.We did everything from scratch, built networks, put in email as well as the business applications and then test them. We knew we had to be ready by January 1.” Mr Drydale said it was “exciting to be doing something no-one else has done. It’s what we wanted for the council, to be innovative, to think outside the box and bring value to the community as best we could and at the cheapest cost.”

JIM FAGAN Noosa Council is now the only local body in Australia with its entire IT infrastructure off site. It has adopted what the supplying company, Technology One, calls the “one council solution” - a move which has saved ratepayers $3 million in set up costs and $1 million in ongoing annual costs.

According to Martin Drydale, the council’s acting director of community infrastructure, Queensland Treasury Corporation estimated $4.5 million would be spent in building a data centre and buying equipment. “We’ve actually come in at $1.5 million.” He said: “Tech One is a very client-focussed, multi-national organisation working in Europe, Asia as well as Australia. They are very keen on delivering this business model throughout Australia and want it to be successful, just as we do obviously. The benefit of working with them in the early days is we are working with their top people. “The biggest innovation is that we’re the only council in Australia which is fully on Cloud which basically means all of your IT infrastructure is off site. It is secure and we are the only ones that have access to our data. The other benefit is that we manage and keep our applications up-to-date.

Ultimate de-amalgamation cost may be $3.5 million JIM FAGAN Noosa Council Acting CEO Peter Franks believes the ultimate cost of de-amalgamation will be just under $3.5 million compared to Queensland Treasury Corporation’s (QTC) estimated $11.5 million.

In a tabled report he told Noosa Council on Monday he said currently costs were 35 per cent of the QTC estimate and “our ongoing budget is at no additional cost (0%) compared to the QTC’s projected $2.5 million. “This is borne out by the balanced budget, with depreciation fully funded and no rate increases, that Council has been able to bring down.” He said Council now had an entirely new information communications technology (ICT) and service system, the net result being a saving of $4 million in the setup costs and a saving of $1 million ongoing in annual costs. “This is a full externally hosted (Cloud)

system with outsourced application services through the supplier.” He said the IT system was the biggest risk factor in this entire project. “What we have ended up with is a service system using state-of-the-art technology and while all the individual components have been run by other people, nobody has actually put them together and this makes Noosa the first authority in Queensland or inter-state to offer an IT service like this.” Speaking after the meeting, he told Noosa Today: “We were cognisant of the fact that we wanted to keep the costs as low as possible. We managed that through using innovative technology and doing some really good deals.” He said the ongoing operating costs were well within budget and the new IT system was really a cost effective way of delivering its ser-

vices to the council and the community. “It puts us in a really good place to go forward.” Asked what the ultimate cost of de-amalgamation could be Mr Franks said “at this stage it is just under $3.5 million compared to the $11.5 million QTC put up.” Mr Franks said he took his hat off to the dedication of council staff. “This was not a solo effort. It was a team effort.” He said the hardest part of the job was telling people he had not been able to place them in the new structure and then telling them they would have to wait until January before they could be made redundant. “There were 79 people in the end. It was really tough on them and really tough on their families. I can understand what they are going through. “Unfortunately, I’ve been through some of the processes myself so I know what is like. That’s why I took a very personal approach I made an offer to speak to every one of those people just to ex-

plain where I was coming from. “I think the important thing for them to remember is that it is not a reflection on them. We had way too many people transfer over and, to keep us financially stable in the future, we had to make the cuts.The vast majority have signed their separation papers so they get their full redundancy payments next week. There are a few who haven’t been finalised but they have a couple of months before their redundancy actually kicks in.” Mr Franks said he had put his hat in the ring for the job of CEO and admitted he was disappointed he had not been given the role. “I can understand where council is coming from and I wish them all the best. This was the biggest project I’ve taken on in my career and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. The support I got from the community was incredible.” Asked about his own future, he said, “I have a number of feelers out there. Something will come up. I’ve no doubt about that. All I would like to say is all the best to Brett and the Noosa Council. He’ll be a good operator and he will do well for Noosa.”

“It was also a wonderful opportunity to network with Tennis Australia hierarchy and government representatives, and to develop future pathways and relationships for our sports and tourism industry,” Sandy said. “This has been an incredible coup for the small village of Cooroy, who placed second in the AO Blitz - part of Tennis Australia onslaught to take tennis into all corners of Australia. Rob Schmitt said it was an honour to attend such a prestigious event. “Cooroy has now been firmly imbedded into the Australian tennis scene. A man of the community RON LANE At a recent service held at Drysdales Funerals in Tewantin, a large group of men and women from both the Noosa Heads SLSC and the Noosa Dolphins Rugby Union Club sat side by side to show their respect and bid a sad farewell to their clubmate and friend John Ford.

Their attendance was a sign of respect for this great man who had given so many years of hard work and loyalty to both clubs, helping in the first instant to lift the Noosa Surf club into the world of business and sometime later organising the first unofficial meeting of what was to become the Noosa Dolphins. John’s involvement with Noosa Surf Club was not his first venture into the surf club world. In the mid-1950s he joined Nobbys Beach Qld and obtained his bronze medallion. Later on John shifted to North Queensland where he became involved in the Nipper movement, eventually serving time as North Queensland Superintendent. Then in 1973, having moved to Noosa, he continued his involvement when his sons Paul and Scott joined Noosa Nippers. In the years ahead John was to establish a reputation for management in the hospitality industry. Such was his reputation that when in 1984, the President of the senior club John Jenkins, decided it was time to appoint a full-time professional administrator, the man for the job was John Ford. This was to be the start of a long and highly respected association. For the club, a major plus

was that his wife Mary came with him. Her hard work and loyalty in assisting John was something that earned much respect. In the 1987/88 season the Surf Club, under John’s management, made its first outstanding financial contribution to both the senior lifesaving and nipper clubs. The reputation of John Ford as an administrator was established. Another outstanding achievement was creating a small but very informative publication which he called Between the Flags. This caught the imagination of the members and the heading is still being used today when articles on club life are written. Then in the late 1970s, it happened. Over a few quite drinks with a group of mates the talk turned to the lack of a rugby union club in Noosa. Immediately John suggested they should do something about it and the rest is history. With men such as Trevor Luff, Max Gunthorpe, David Nicholson and Dr Charles Elliot being privy to the conversation, the wheels were set in motion. By 1985 the club became incorporated and the first game was held at the back of the Kin Kin pub. With John’s continued involvement, the relationship between the two clubs continued with the Surf Club assisting in fundraising, hosting meetings and organising the traditional Premiership Breakfast. Most important of all during the winter months, many lifesavers have also proudly worn the colours of the Noosa Dolphins. The outstanding contribution of John “Mario” Ford within our community should not go unrecognised. RIP old friend, RIP.

But it seems those plans include the current staff. Former owners Alan and Phil Starkey confirmed that all 97 staff had been re-employed by the Feng’s Australia arm, Noosa Springs Investment Pty Ltd. It was likely this key point was one of the many reasons the Starkeys chose the Fengs as the new owners. Phil Starkey said there had been a lot of interest in the resort from potential buyers but it was felt the Feng’s family approach to business and the community fitted the bill. they described as being like extended family. The Fengs said they had no plans to change the facilities at this point. They will now “sell” the concept of coming to Noosa to play golf to their many club members in China.

With direct flights to Brisbane, the Fengs plan to put together golf packages to bring more Chinese visitors to the Coast. They have also formed an association with IMG Golf, a major international agency with superstars like Ernie Els and Yani Tseng on its books, and has asked it to start arrangements to

bring in established golf tournaments. The Feng’s Chinese resort, Dragon Lake, was the venue for the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou. “Our goal is to realise the potential of Noosa Springs and to bring golfers from around the world to experience the best that Noosa Springs can offer,” Mr Feng said.

StarCo, has retained the two development sites to the south of the clubhouse, which managing director Alan Starkey said are suitable for a major luxury development in the future. The Fengs also recently bought a hotel development site and a majori-

ty shareholding of Links Hope Island Golf Club on the Gold Coast. Mr Feng described Noosa as a wonderful place, with a very good community. “Noosa Springs is a world class golf course and we loved it from our first trip,” he said.

“The climate here is ideal for golf and the air quality is much better than China so we think [Chinese] golfers will love it here.” Mr Feng said his family loved Noosa very much and would be looking at other opportunities in the area.

“I was just mentioning it. I’ve always wanted to do the Kokoda trek, I don’t know why, but it’s been a dream,” Lynn said. Workmate Rachel said she was quick to put up her hand to join her friend on the gruelling 90km adventure that will feature some of the world’s toughest terrain. The two trekkers will be completing the trail with 20 “walking wounded” war veterans as part of the Mates 4 Mates adventure challenge. Established to offer support and mateship to wounded and injured current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel, Mates 4 Mates offers adventure challenges to help soldiers rebuild their lives. Lynn said she wants to complete the eight-day trek in honour of current and ex-service men and women. In preparation for the trek, the two

But it’s no easy sailing, according to Rachel, who said the toughest challenge to overcome is the mental aspect of physical exhaustion. “Yesterday, my legs, well, it just wasn’t happening,” Rachel said. “I was walking, just dragging myself up the hill.” Lynn said the trick was to not look up. “We’re going to do that on the track. You just don’t look up,” she said. The two women are set to start the trek on March 21, thanks to the

But Lynn and Rachel said it was Sub Branch deputy president Ian “Rowey” Rowe who has been their biggest supporter. “Rowey is the one who got the ball rolling for us,” Lynn said. “We wrote to the Sub Branch (for support), but Rowey’s just been our staunch supporter from the start.” Lynn and Rachel will hold a fundraising trivia night on January 19, from 7pm to help raise funds for the trek. Hey Bill – a Noosa institution William ‘Hey Bill’ Watson truly is a Noosa icon. With his signature red quad bike and trailers parked beside Noosa Surf Club, Hey Bill can be found laughing and joking with the dozens of children waiting for a snow cone.

Now a thriving business, Hey Bill started with nothing more than a hessian bag of oranges and a dream to live in paradise. With his car offering beachside accommodation, Hey Bill sold oranges to beachgoers at Tea Tree and Alexandria Bay throughout the summer. “There were more people there than Main Beach in those days,” he explained. Today, Hey Bill and his bevvy of beauties can be found travelling between Noosa Surf Club and the river mouth offering ice-creams, drinks and snow cones. This Tuesday marked the 44th year of business for the man Noosa MP Glen Elmes described as “a Noosa institution”. But Hey Bill’s connection to the Noosa community runs deeper than quenching the thirsts of holiday-makers and locals. “A couple of years ago I was sitting on the beach, wondering what I could do for the community,” he said. “I just sat there and sat there and then I thought it might be a good idea to get a quad for the Police department because they probably needed it.”

So, more than two years ago, Hey Bill began to put aside 50 cents from every drink sold with the aim of raising $7,000 to purchase a much-needed quad bike for local police. And last Thursday, Hey Bill’s dream finally came true. “It’s taken a couple of years to get the mon-

ey together. And the community really bought it itself,” he said. Last week Hey Bill handed Mr Elmes the keys of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), fully decked out with lights and siren, ready to begin Police patrols. The ATV will help the Police patrol a larger

area in less time as well as gain easier access to the beach and tough terrain. Not one to ever give up Hey Bill said he now plans to raise funds to buy an ATV for the Tewantin Police beat. He said he will once again enlist the help of the community in his fundraising efforts. “We can help them (the Police), so they can help us,” he said.

NOT CINDERELLA After reading some articles from Greg Reddaway I am simply dumbfounded to think what planet he is coming from. Everything he has written so far is dream time and not with the real world. Firstly and lastly Noosa is not the Cinderella of Australia, it’s looking more like a home for oldies. Or selfish people, who only care about themselves. Even the structure of new Councillors show the brushing of Noosa Park’s nominees, with only Mayor Playford and Tony Wellington having NPA association. Mr Reddaway couldn’t have been around during the 1980s, when Noosa’s main title was the drugs capital of Queensland. And it was only the Jack Newton golf tournament and Noosa Triathlon that allowed the area to enjoy the wonderful kudos it does today. Mate, Noosa is part of the Sunshine Coast and will only prosper from a united stand. In 30 years’ time, when the next generation comes along, I am sure the accolades won’t be the same. What everyone needs to realise it’s not Noosa and the rest.

MILLENNIUM BUG The deniers of climate science commonly bring up the Millennium bug (also known as Y2K) as an example of a prediction of doom that was wrong, and didn’t come off; and then conflate the millennium bug with climate change predictions to make an argument that they are another prediction of doom that won’t come off. They’re wrong, and they’re right! They’re wrong - here’s the truth: in the 90s computer experts realised that there was a problem with the way computers recorded dates, gave appropriate warning to the governments, corporations, and software companies of the world, who put huge resources into avoiding the millennium bug. They were very successful - they stopped the consequences of the millennium bug from eventuating! They’re right: the millennium bug is a perfect model for how we need to deal with climate change. The experts have realised that there’s a problem, they have given appropriate warnings, now we need to put huge resources into avoiding climate change so that it can become another dire prediction that never eventuated!

MORE GOOD NEWS It was so good to read all the positive news about our new Noosa Council in the Noosa Today of January 9. We have been out of the country for five weeks in the UK and returned yesterday to read all about the good start and positive changes they are already making. It was such a joy to read instead of the usual negative reporting and correspondence comments before we left. We were truly sick of it. The news reporting here is more negative in general and we would like to see more positive reporting in the future. We live in one of the best areas in Australia, let alone the world, yet politics and negativity spoilt it on a grand scale. Those responsible need to get a life and understand and appreciate how very lucky they are living here in paradise on the Sunshine Coast. We wish the new Noosa Council all the best for the future of this wonderful region.

WILL GET WORSE While it is good to see we have started a debate and now are coming to the realisation that we have the same issues as other busy night spots with alcohol-fuelled violence, I don’t believe Mr McCallum’s comment in one of the local papers recently is the answer by suggesting we just don’t go out to avoid being attacked. I have been astounded to hear from friends and strangers since writing about the ‘Cowards Punch’ on my son, about the number of incidents that have happened in Noosa recently, most of them not reported due to no witnesses and no CCTV. One of them I was told about involved a guy out with his sister inside a venue and he was set upon by a few idiots while she was in the toilet. Both the cowards and the guy attacked were bundled outside and the security/bouncers didn’t want to know about it after that. Owners of these venues, if they continue to insist that they need to be open until 3am serving alcohol, which for the life of me I can’t understand, have to take responsibility for the safety of their patrons. Every venue should have CCTV and surely our new council can look at installing cameras in public areas such as the carpark next to the Surf Club. We can’t bury our heads in the sand and hope it goes away. It won’t, it will only get worse. It’s time for a change of attitude.

LOST CAUSE I can’t help but feel sorry for those courageous souls who keep trying to counter the repetitious earbashings of our serial climate change deniers with some factual and scientific evidence. It’s a lost cause, for these people are far too busy trawling the internet for the sites where the world wide denial lobby refuels, to listen to reason, let alone start noticing the signs of stress Mother Nature has been sending us for some time now. Their very real – and understandable – fear of the hard to imagine consequences of our reckless colonizing of the globe is kept hidden behind a barrage of pseudo-scientific jibber-jabber. Sadly, these days they can even feel justified by the global roll back of policies aimed at protecting the environment, orchestrated by conservative governments everywhere, and cheered on by big business and right-wing media. It’s a case of the powerful blind leading the ridiculous up the garden path. With a bit of luck, they won’t be around anymore when rising sea levels, acidification of the oceans, and prolonged heat waves will have

turned the Earth into a very uncomfortable place to live, tragically not only for us, but for every other sentient being as well.

KNEW TOO MUCH Greg Reddaway must be complimented on covering such complex issues for Noosa, like its future and its economy. This is particularly pleasing considering he is a member of the Noosa Parks Association, which seems to have no policies or interest in these matters. I’m also perplexed but gratified to note Mr Reddaway reference the vision and hard work of Lew Brennan in his role in establishing the first university in Noosa. Indeed much of what Greg writes about is what Cr Brennan was committed to and had achieved in his economic strategy for Noosa, particularly for Cooroy and the Hinterland. The question then arises - why did the Noosa Parks Association and its members spend many thousands of dollars running a vicious campaign against Cr Brennan if they now acknowledge his vision and its worth? Perhaps he just knew too much.

Jan Carlson is an innovative watercolour artist who strives to extend the boundaries of watercolour beyond its traditional roots. Through this experimental process she has developed a unique technique to produce her “field flower style” works. Jan’s eclectic range of works are held in private collections in Australia and overseas. Originally from England, Christine Reilly always loved art and after raising her family, she took up art classes. She is now establishing herself and her art work in Noosa. Christine mainly specialises in oil on canvas, with the love of depth and vibrant colour. Much of her work is landscapes and she is inspired by animals and wildlife where she captures the distinctive characteristics of the subject. It was such a relief to get to the start of the Bruce Highway the other evening and know that all that lay ahead were sunset glimpses of the Glasshouse Mountains, smooth road through green fields and rolling hills, and 110 virtually all the way. Before the hate mail starts rolling in, please understand I’m not advocating a German autobahn style of freeway mayhem (although jeez that was fun), nor am I suggesting any relaxation of road rules. Just maybe some logic and uniformity when it comes to designating speed limits, particularly now that almost every town along Highway One has been bypassed.

The reason I was on the road last week was a quick southern states tour to promote my new book, That Summer At Boomerang, that culminated in a lovely cocktail hour reception at the Freshwater Surf Club as part of their Duke’s Day celebrations. It was the first time I’d been to Duke’s Day and it was great to see the broader community taking such an interest in the events of 99 years ago, when Freshwater became the symbolic birthplace of Australian surfing. While the celebration is held on the date (January 10) of Duke Kahanamoku’s famous surfboard riding demonstration at Freshwater, it has become a much wider celebration of this pretty little beach town that played an important role in the development of surfing over so many years. The pioneers of the surfboard industry, for example, set up their factories just back from the beach in nearby Brookvale, and it was wonderful to see the old boys there in such wisecracking good form. Gordon Woods, at 88 the granddaddy of the Brookvale board mafia, needs a walking cane these days, but he’s as sharp as a tack. And so is Barry Bennett, still looking like he could paddle a ski out to the Bower and back in record time. I also caught up with Greg McDonagh and Denny Keogh, still chuffed over his recent induction into the Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame in California, where he joins our own Bill Wallace. The last word for the evening went to the irrepressible Gordon Woods. After MC Simon Phin suggested to the audience that they get a happy snap of the pioneers together because “it might be your last chance”, Gordon turned around and prodded me with his walking stick. “That’s a bit bloody premature,” he said, winking.

There was a time when the distance between Sydney and the Queensland border was measured not in kilometres or miles but in necessary supplies. An overnighter to get the early at Burleigh, for example, might have been a case of VB and two packs of Winnie Reds. And yes, kiddies, I’m ashamed to admit that there was a time when we considered it completely normal to stack the boards on the roof of the old Falcon and speed up the Pacific while filling the cabin with smoke, beer fumes and coarse laughter. In those lawless times there were no RBTs or speed cameras, although if you fanged through a truckstop town at high speed, you might find yourself getting cuffed by the local copper and doing overnight porridge in the foul-smelling drunks’ cage. In this regard I was always very cautious when passing through the lovely NSW south coast towns of Milton and Ulladulla, where the scenery is to die for but the malodorous lock-up might kill you for real. And for a while the cops at Kempsey were so gnarly that we would actually add an hour to the trip by detouring through Crescent Head and Southwest Rocks. But enough of my delinquent youth (which probably wasn’t so bad – I certainly never “king hit” anyone from behind or ran amok on crystal meth, as far as I can remember). These days we drive sedately down the highway in a sensible SUV that smokers aren’t even allowed into until they’ve showered, cleaned their teeth and changed their clothes. There is no esky full of grog hidden under the mouldering stack of wet towels and boardies. We do not “moon” passing vehicles or take comfort stops without stopping. We just cruise along the highway, watching the speedometer intently so as to ensure we don’t do 50 in a 40 zone and incur a fine of approximately the amount it costs to charter a Learjet for the trip. And as I drive, I find myself getting more

Helping pets keep their cool With temperatures set to soar again it’s not just we humans who suffer. It’s pretty tough on our pets, too.

They are just as susceptible to heat-related illness as humans. Unlike people, who sweat through their skin, pets cool off through the pads of their feet and tongues. They need to pant to regulate their temperature, and dogs and cats with long hair can be

more susceptible to the effects of heat. And, according to Dr David Neck from the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), dogs can be just as much at risk in your backyard, as they could be in a parked car. “Vets receive numerous calls from concerned pet owners during summer heatwaves seeing worrying signs like lethargy, excessive panting or breathing problems. But there are simple tips that can help to prevent or minimise problems,” he said.

• Provide shady spots for your pet to rest. Leave fans on inside. • Make sure there is cool, fresh water available at all times. Leave this in a shady area. • Keep an eye on older pets as they will be more susceptible to the heat • Fill a paddling pool with a couple of inches of water and leave this in a shady spot for your dog to sit in. • Ice cubes in your pet’s water bowl will keep their temperature down • Try to exercise your dog in the early morning or the late evening to avoid the hottest part of the day. • If you own a long haired dog, consider giving them a trim to help them cope better with the hotter summer months.

Give hot spots the flick

It’s summer, it’s hot and humid, and that means hot spots are rife.

These nasty sores can come on very fast and can be very painful for your dog. But Genevieve and the team at Sunshine Coast Pet grooming have some great tips to help. “In the grooming salon we have a lot of clients asking us about hotspots and the best way to treat them,” Genevieve said. “You might leave your perfectly healthy pup one morning to go to work, and by the time you return home that evening, she’s completely preoccupied with an area of skin that is irritated, inflamed and oozing. Continued licking, chewing and scratching at the area by the dog seriously worsens the condition.” TREATING HOT SPOTS Hair removal. The first thing you need to do to treat the wound is to remove the hair on, in and around the affected area.

Disinfecting the wound. Once you’ve shaved the area and identified the margins, clip the hair back until you see healthy skin. Then you can begin gently disinfecting the wound with a solution that will remove bacteria. Contact your vet for the appropriate solution. Oral antibiotics. These are usually prescribed by your vet for a course of three to four weeks and sometimes longer. Antihistamines may also be used to help with itchiness. Keeping your dog away from the wound. It is critical to the healing process that the dog leaves the hot spot alone. You’ll probably need to put an E-collar on her (one of those lamp shade-shaped collars) to prevent her from licking and biting the affected skin. “It is important you see your vet and have the hot spot treated quickly to relieve your pet from any pain caused by the hot spot. “We have recently been clipping back many dogs that are prone to hotspots and other skin irritations and this allows the owners to easily tend to any irritation that occurs.”

Summer is sizzling at Samba! The Brazilian barbecue restaurant Samba Grill really knows how to turn up the heat.

As one of the newest additions to Gympie Terrace, the unique restaurant is proving a hit with locals and visitors who can enjoy both a la carte dining as well as traditional ‘Rodizio’. Restaurant owner and head chef Steve Beak first learnt the traditional style of cooking when he was a child, living on a cattle ranch in Argentina and Brazil. Rodizio is an all-you-can-eat style of traditional Brazilian dining where prime cuts of marinated beef, pork, lamb and chicken are skewered then grilled over organic charcoal before being carved at the table and served to diners. The meat is served with side dishes including black beans, mixed green salad with pear and Brazilian rice with zucchini and pumpkin. If you don’t fancy meat then there

is a vegetarian option available which includes polenta with zucchini sauce, fried rice cakes with pesto and braised haloumi with oregano. Spice up your life And this weekend all things ginger will be celebrated at the annual Ginger Flower and Food Festival at Yandina. Ginger is one of those great ingredients that can be used in sweet and savoury recipes, drinks and confectionary.

Once considered rare and exotic, ginger is now widely available for cooking and medicinal use.

Believed to have originated in the tropical jungles of Southern Asia, it is now grown in many countries, including Australia, predominately on the Sunshine Coast.

Sweet potato and ginger soup A zingy soup that balances sweet with sour, richness with sharpness. Serves four.

INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp unsalted butter 2 red onions, sliced 1½ tbsp fresh root ginger, grated 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and diced 1½ litres chicken stock or water 150ml double cream 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp maple syrup Juice of ½ lime

Sticky ginger cake This recipe guarantees a truly sticky, treacly ginger cake. INGREDIENTS 225g plain flour 1 tsp mixed spice 3 tsp ground ginger 1½ tsp baking powder ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp salt 285ml milk 1 egg 85g butter 85g black treacle 85g golden syrup 115g caster sugar

Melt the butter in a large pan and sweat the onions until they start to soften. Add the ginger and cook until aromatic. Add the potato and stir until it becomes slightly shiny. Add the stock or water. Cook for 30 minutes, or until you can mash the potatoes easily against the side of the pan. Blitz in the pan using a hand-held blender, until you get a nice smooth consistency. Stir in the cream, soy sauce and maple syrup and squeeze in the lime juice. Season to taste.

METHOD

Preheat oven to 180C. Lightly grease a 900g loaf tin and line with baking parchment. Sift the flour, mixed spice, ginger, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. Measure out the milk in a jug and beat in the egg. Put the butter, treacle, golden syrup and sugar in a pan and heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the butter has melted. Pour this treacle mix on to the dry ingredients, followed by the milk and egg mix, and beat with a wooden spoon until the contents of the bowl are well mixed. Pour the mixture into the loaf tin and bake for 90 minutes or until the gingerbread is well risen and feels firm to the touch. Leave the cake in its tin until it is cool enough to handle, then turn it out on a wire rack and allow it to cool further. Can be eaten cold, or warmed with cream. NOTE: For a really sticky cake, wrap in greaseproof paper and foil and store for a few days before eating.

European car at a Korean price CHRIS NIXON The new Skoda Octavia is loaded with the latest European technology, but stands out for practical, low-tech features that families will love.

The range comprises 103 kiloWatt and 132 kW petrol engines and a 110 kW diesel, Ambition, Ambition Plus and Elegance specification grades and manual or seven-speed DSG transmissions, depending on model. The wagon option adds $1350.

The Octavia also uses virtually all the major components of its hugely-successful sibling, the Golf 7. This breaks a pattern that usually saw Skodas a generation behind. It’s virtually a Golf under the skin, but with many differences in detail design and equipment.

The third-generation Octavia has grown in length, width and interior space. A massive boot in both the hatchback-sedan and wagon versions is an eye-catching feature. The boot mat has carpet on one side and rubber on the other, for dirty or wet items. There are bag hooks, tie-down hooks, a simple piece of Velcro-backed plastic that can be attached to the carpet to secure luggage and a small, lidded garbage container in the door pocket. If these surprise-and-delight features impress, then so does the price, which opens at $21,690 (and runs up to $35,490). That’s a small-car price for something measurably larger.

For value and excellent performance, it’s hard to ignore the base 103TSI, perhaps with one of the option packs available to top up the equipment list. Now that the festivities are becoming a foggy memory, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to put your team together for the teams divisions of the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing, presented by Jeep.

Teams events at the festival are definitely played for fun, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no denying that some people just canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t subdue that competitive urge to thrash their mates or even family members! All in fun, of course. First up we have the Bank of Queensland Family Challenge, offering mums and dads â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even grandparents â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the opportunity to team up with sons or daughters to represent the family in one of our most popular events. Families compete as a team of two, surfing in the same heat, with cumulative points score over the two best rides of both members being what counts. Effectively, this means that if dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit old and slow, a hot junior might get him over the line, and if junior is only learning, then a fired up and fit dad might have to do the heavy lifting. Either way, the BOQ Family Challenge is a great opportunity for generations to surf competitively together, and share those moments youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll both treasure in years to come. The event followed last year’s popular Roar clinics at the club, which boosted membership and saw Noosa Lions form its first U13 girls’ team, which made it to the semi-finals. With the weather gods turning on the perfect night the local community turned out in droves on the weekend for the annual Noosa Pirates Honky Tonk Rodeo.

Former Noosa Pirates president Chris O’Grady said it was the biggest crowd he had seen in the 11 year event, with the estimated 2500-3000 crowd enjoying the thrills and spills of the wild cowboys from the west. One of the favourite events was the little tykes riding the poddy calves and who will forget local identity Isaac Smith in a blindfold dance off in the centre of the ring! A real highlight for the Noosa Pirates was the community support for their major fundraising event. From sponsors to volunteers there were people contributing everywhere to make the night such a suc-

cess. Secretary Lexi Mawn said: “To name everyone would take up half the newspaper but you know who you are and the club thanks you for your support.” Behind every great club is a strong committee and with the enthusiasm around Pirate Park at the moment, it looks to be a great year on and off the field. President Nick Webster said: “It was a real pleasure to see all the locals hang around the clubhouse afterwards for some live music and a few drinks. It really reminded me of the old days.” The Pirates are back into full training now with the boys having a few gruelling sessions last week under head trainer Dean McMasters. Captain Coach Liam Anlizark, while very impressed with the early season training numbers, wants to see all the boys at training this Tuesday night at Pirate Park at 6pm. Go you mighty Pirates!

Cooroy C Grade has made it to the one-day final, with their third consecutive win. Facing a strong Yandina side, also competing for the last finals place, Cooroy were asked to bat first and made a healthy 230 for 9 off their 40 overs. Full credit to Dale Scanlan, who dominated the bowlers with a magnificent unbeaten 124, which included 10 6’s and eight 4’s. It was superb to watch! In reply, Yandina faced some tight Cooroy bowling and were eventually dismissed for 157 off 34 overs. All of the Cooroy bowlers chipped in with wickets, but Andy Bowden’s 3 for 8 off 4 overs was the stand-out. The C Grade boys have worked hard and fully deserve their place in the final. Every single C Grade player has contributed over the weeks

to this achievement, and all should be very proud of their efforts. The final round of the one-day A Grade competition was completed on Saturday when Cooroy-Eumundi travelled to Maleny. Cougars captain Mick Carman won the toss and had no hesitation in asking the home side to bat first on a pitch that was being used for the first time this season. The C-E bowlers tore into the opposition, reducing them to 9-52 before a gutsy last wicket stand extended Maleny’s total to 80 all out. Best performers for the Cougars were the consistent Pat Paterson (4-21) and wicket taking machine Aaron Husband (3-15). In reply C-E struggled a little losing several late wickets to pass the Maleny total six down in the 21st over. Best with the bat was Jesse Ritchie with an elegant 20. With the Cougars missing out on the one-day final, focus will now turn to the two-day competition where they are well placed to launch an assault on the premiership beginning next Saturday with a visit to Landsborough.

A barefoot bowlers bucks night gave a usually quiet Saturday afternoon at TewantinNoosa Bowls Club a boost, as they took to the green dressed up as superheroes and fantasy characters TEWANTIN-NOOSA BOWLS CLUB The 2014 Super Challenge season gets underway this weekend. On January 7 the ladies returned to bowls after a break with Club selected pairs sponsored by Noosa Landscape Supplies won by E Coghlan and L Hughes. H Mitchell and S Mould were runners-up. On Friday rain saw a shortened Club sponsored open triples. Winners were L Anderson, P Vignon, V Vignon, runners-up T Williams, C Gleeson, Paul Gray. Saturday saw the ladies and men’s super chal-

lenge teams having a final practise run to ensure club selectors choose the teams that will perform the best for the club. There was a lot of good bowls played and it will be a hard task to fit so many highly skilled players into limited team spaces. The club recently said farewell to Greenkeeper Mark Bone, who sadly had to return to NSW. He has been helped by D Hawksford and R Sorrensenin, keeping club greens to a high standard for the past year. The greenkeeper vacancy will be filled in the near future.
