■ Two homes razed in neighbourhood blaze...
Lucky escape By CASEY NEILL TWO police saved a neighbouring family from a fire threatening their Dandenong home on Tuesday afternoon - only for the blaze to reignite and destroy the house 12 hours later. Dandenong Tasking Unit Senior Constables Chris O’Halloran and David Clarke were in Belfort Street about 3pm on 14 January when they first spotted smoke. “We drove down there and saw number 20 pretty much fully ablaze,” he said. “We were both shocked it hadn’t been called through already. “The house was completely up - you’d think one of the neighbours would have seen it.” The officers found no sign anyone was inside the house so moved next door to number 18, where the flames were spreading to a fence and carport. Sen Const O’Halloran and his offsider banged on the door and were about to smash a window when a woman answered, holding a two-year-old child. “We asked if anyone else was inside,” he said. “Initially she said ’no’, then remembered her husband was in the shower. “He threw a pair of shorts on and came outside.” The officers then kicked in the door at number 20 to ensure no one was trapped. “The fire was coming up
both sides of the house,” Sen Const O’Halloran said. CFA crews arrived within about 10 minutes and extinguished the flames dangerously close to igniting a car parked in the burning carport. “It took them an hour to put out number 20,” Sen Const O’Halloran said. The fire had burnt the home to the ground. “That area’s been evacuated because that house was apparently full of asbestos,” he said. “A crime scene guard was put on overnight because the fire was deemed suspicious.” But the danger wasn’t over. About 3am the guard noticed smoke coming from number 18. Police believe strong wind carried embers from number 20, and the home was soon completely ablaze. CFA crews returned to the scene but the home was destroyed. “The occupants had already been taken away for the night, because the power was cut,” Sen Const O’Halloran said. “They’ve escaped it twice, really.” He was humble about suggestions from peers that he and Sen Const Clarke would be nominated for bravery awards. “We were just in the right spot at the right time, I think,” he said. Police are still investigating the original fire’s cause. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

THE Reverend Elizabeth Alfred was praised as a guiding light for women in the Anglican Church at a special celebration Eucharist to mark her 100th birthday. Family, friends and church colleagues gathered at St James Dandenong on Friday 10 January to honour Rev Alfred, the first woman ordained as a priest in the Anglican Church in Victoria. A spontaneous applaud echoed through the historic church when Rev Alfred, who has been unwell, was helped into the church where she ministered for many years. Prominent Melbourne journalist Murial Porter, who writes about issues affecting the Anglican Church, said she would never forget Rev Alfred’s ordination. “It was a grey Melbourne day but a shaft of sunlight fell on your head as you were being ordained. God was with us at that moment,” Ms Porter told the congregation. “I speak for all women clergy and lay women when I say you have been a great inspiration and source of courage.” Speaking on behalf of the Diocese of Gippsland, Heather Martin also paid tribute to Rev Alfred’s pioneering role on behalf of women. “You were always a few steps ahead of us. Your spirituality and love for the church encouraged us to hang in there.” Rev Alfred said it was wonderful to have so many of her friends in the congregation as

Cemetery tops list SPRINGVALE Botanical Cemetery has been named the best in the world for 2013. The 422-acre Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) site was the first cemetery outside the USA to win the American Cemetery Excellence Award. Health Minister David Davis visited the 113-year-old site last Wednesday to acknowledge the achievement. “As you look around these beautiful grounds it is easy to see why this cemetery is so highly regarded, he said. Independent trade publication American Cemetery Magazine awarded the honour for Springvale’s community engagement, innovation, performance, team spirit and ground maintenance. Judges said the site had come a long way from a once-isolated and impoverished rural cemetery, served by a poorly-patronised mortuary train.
There have been about 139,000 burials and 390,000 cremations at the cemetery since 1901. Today it’s home to more than 80,000 established trees, sweeping lawns, landscaped gardens and cascading water features. “We received dozens of entries from cemeteries throughout the world - all of them doing great things to serve their communities, Kates-Boylston Publications executive director Thomas A Parmalee said. “But Springvale stood out in so many ways, and it truly exemplifies that cemeteries can continue to be relevant and beautiful. Springvale Botanical Cemetery chief operating officer Jane Grover said it was home to the largest feng shui designed Asian cemetery, the Song He Yuan, and other special areas dedicated to the military and police force. “We also have a children’s lawn complete with playground, so siblings visiting can be entertained
while parents have time for quiet reflection,â€? she said. Horticulture team leader John Wright has maintained the cemetery grounds for 13 years. “The horticultural team has got quite a passion for the grounds,â€? he said. “It’s the people you meet on a daily basis, from the public that have lost loved ones. “You have a rapport. You might only spend five or 10 minutes with them but it makes their day. “It makes your day as well.â€? Client services consultant Samantha Dickason said the cemetery was unique. “We encourage people to not come out and not only come to remember their families but enjoy the grounds,â€? she said. “We have people that walk their dogs through, we have people that come to the cafĂŠ just to have a coffee. “People even have their wedding photos taken here, because it
Police intercept finds gun and drugs POLICE uncovered a firearm, ammunition and drugs when they carried out a routine interception of a vehicle in Noble Park this month. They stopped a black Yamaha motorcycle on the corner
of Heatherton Road and Douglas Street about 12.40am on 8 January, and discovered the illegal items during the search of the male rider and female passenger. Police allege the motorcycle
was also displaying false number plates. They impounded the motorcycle under hoon legislation and arrested a 28-year-old Noble Park man and a Pakenham woman, 24, at the scene.

doesn’t look like a cemetery. “It’s the most beautiful cemetery in Melbourne.â€? Ms Dickason said the award recognised the cemetery’s whole team. “From horticultural to the grave diggers to the client services consultants, right through to senior management, to the cafĂŠ - it takes all of us working together to build,â€? she said. “The most rewarding part of my role is to be able to look after these families at possibly the worst time in their life, and guide them and give them what they need.â€? Roxy Flores has managed the cemetery’s cafĂŠ for the past year. “This cemetery is absolutely amazing. Wherever you go it just is delightful,â€? she said. “You can help people and you can give a little bit of love to the community.â€?

DANDENONG support services stepped up to help one of their own at Christmas. Cornerstone Contact Centre lacked the resources to produce hampers to hand out during December but co-ordinator Don Cameron said three other groups provided the Mason and Walker streets centre with goods. “A big thank you to Pastor Larry Edwards and his team from Dandenong Church of Christ for donating many hampers, he said. “Most hampers were given out just before Christmas to help our people survive when meal programs take a break. “For many years now we have collected free bread from Ho Hiep Bakery in Noble Park. “Their staff have been great to us and the bread they donate has ended up in backpacks and cupboards of many hungry people all over Dandenong. Mr Cameron said Christmas was always a busy and difficult time for those who turn to Cornerstone for welfare assistance. “Social isolation and loneliness is especially noticeable when surrounded by images of happy families enjoying each other’s company, he said. “A combined group comprised of people from Avocare and several other community groups put on a fantastic lunch on Christmas Day and the team from the Coptic Orthodox Church in Hallam was able to run their regular meal program on Boxing Day which was very well attended. Cornerstone services are due to return in February. “We would love to keep them open but we need to give our volunteers some time off to spend with their families and take a very well earned break, Mr Cameron said. The centre is looking forward to a productive year. “The Cornerstone building is probably in the best condition we’ve ever had it in thanks to a handy man from the Neighbourhood House programs, he said. “Our ovens managed to survive another year cooking thousands of meals for hungry people and our kitchen crew are looking forward to a new oven hopefully sometime this year. “We managed to buy a new trailer last year and we were very happy when the food bank staff carefully guided a pallet of goods onto it using a forklift.

Unsung swim heroes of the past WHEN I traced the wonderful work the staff and swimming teachers have done and continue to do, teaching young people to swim at the Dandenong Oasis Centre I turned back the pages of time to the days when Claude Quist saved many lives with his expertise as a volunteer lifesaver. On many occasions he rescued not only children but adults who experienced difficulties in the Dandenong Creek. Sadly, sometimes he was too late in reaching them. Claude was a Dandenong printer, conducting his own business specialising in cards, wedding invitations and leaflets. He knew all the main trouble spots in the Dandenong Creek and was sometimes so wary of spots that he hesitated to put his own life at risk to help others. He was one of many of Dandenong’s
MY VOICE A MOMENT WITH
MARG STORK unsung heroes. I’d love to hear your thoughts on other unsung heroes of Greater Dandenong, both living and past. Please email or write to me with your suggestions. No call defeated Do you remember the good old days when the Dandenong Journal circulated throughout not only Dandenong Shire, but also Berwick, Cranbourne, Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully for the princely sum of two pence? I do and in a front page dated Wednesday 21 June 1939, I was inter-
ested to read an advertisement spanning two columns which urged ratepayers to vote ‘No’ in a referendum scheduled for 30 June 1939 regarding a proposal by the shire to borrow 10,000 pounds for the reconstruction of the Dandenong Town Hall. The advertisement read: “Nonproductive outlays increase rates The present town hall loans are not redeemed till 1948 and 1954, so why add additional burdens? A new loan further liability for thirty years. Essentials: better roads, byways and drainage. Roll up, vote no, or pay up. Thankfully the yes campaign (see right) won the day or Dandenong’s most iconic landmark may have been lost. In results published in the Journal on 5 July 1939, the no vote fell well short of the 2170 required to veto the loan application: 1039 residents voted
for the proposal, 1103 against. Chequered history On page three of the same edition in 1939 another advertisement, this one placed by the National Bank of Australasia, highlighted the benefits of cheques. “Payment by cheque has three outstanding advantages: Convenience Having a current account, you are enabled to pay from your desk at home. This saves time, fare-money, waiting at the cashiers’ desks, and the need for carrying large sums of cash about with you. Safety - With a current account, your funds are protected from theft, fire, and general loss. Your cheques also afford the safety of a receipt for each amount paid. A Record - Your chequebutts, with their details of each expenditure, serve as a record of payment, and are a positive aid in budgeting.
This front page ad urged a ‘yes’ vote. 112943 One wonders what readers in 1939 would make of internet banking, PayPal and Paypass?

LOOKING BACK 100 YEARS AGO 20 January 1914 A visitor leaves two bags On Sunday week a party of young people, whilst walking near the Dandenong Cemetery, came across two bags to which was attached an envelope and letter. The letter contained the announcement that the finder could keep the bags as a present from a “down and outer who was off to “make good. With visions of a probable tragedy someone informed the police, and it is now commonly believed that the bags were left behind by the notorious American murderer, who is said to have recently landed in Australia, but this is discounted by the fact that no wealth was found therein. The bags are not of an ordinary nature, and either of them would hold a fourth part of a well grown potato from Bunyip.
50 YEARS AGO 20 January 1964 Shower tea at Narre Warren Mr and Mrs R. R. Simon of ‘Nomis Lodge’ Narre Warren were the hosts on Saturday for a shower tea at their home in honour of Miss Jill McDonald who will be married at St Mary’s Dandenong on February 1. Jill the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. K. McDonald of Hampton Park will marry Donald Coote, second eldest son of Mrs N. Coote and the late Mr George Coote of Poowong. Among those present at the shower tea were Jill’s three bridesmaids, Don’s sister Valerie, and Jill’s sisters Mary and Kim (junior maid) also former basketball teammates, friends and relatives of Jill. Jill, who was ‘Miss Dandenong Show Girl’ in 1959, is a receptionist at Mr Simon’s busi-
ness in Lonsdale St Dandenong. Don is a supervisor at New Holland (Aust) Pty Ltd. They are having a home built at 24 Grandview Avenue, Dandenong. 20 YEARS AGO 20 January 1994 Conditions ‘worse than Ash Wednesday’ Hills fire worry - The head of the Dandenong CFA region has warned there is the potential for a repeat this summer of the horrific 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires. Regional officer Ian Symonds says conditions in some areas of Upper Beaconsfield, Cockatoo, Gembrook and Harkaway are as bad if not worse than they were before the fires of 11-years-ago. “People living near bushland should immediately start cutting an area of up to 30 metres around the home, creating a
circle of safety. Mr Symons says the Dandenong CFA region covers about 3000 square kilometres in the Western Port catchment area, a quarter of which is bushland, and is protected by 2600 volunteers who attend an average of 2100 fires per year. 5 YEARS AGO 20 January 2009 Region tips list of hoon hang-outs Dandenong continues to be a hoon hot spot, with new figures putting it in the top 10 suburbs for vehicle impoundments across the state last year. Victoria Police statistics released yesterday revealed 57 vehicles were impounded from dangerous drivers in Dandenong in 2008. Festival Heat’s big chill in the Park By CASEY NEILL
AN ELDERLY Springvale man almost became a victim of last week’s run of four 40-plus degree days. Police pulled him over as he drove through Kallista, following reports of dangerous driving. Leading Senior Constable Ken Tromp said the man, in his mid-80s, seemed disorientated and lost. “We were able to get him off the road and get him re-hydrated,” he said. City of Greater Dandenong opened cool rooms to the public on Thursday and Friday after
the Department of Health activated the council’s heatwave plan. The rooms at Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough, Dandenong Oasis, Jan Wilson Community Centre and the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre had air-conditioning and drinking water on hand. The municipality’s airconditioned libraries were also open until 9pm in response to soaring temperatures. Dandenong Oasis administration frontline co-ordinator Tash Mandic said the complex’s cool room was well-utilised. “Every time we went in to fill up water there was always
a large group of people utilising that room,” she said. Ms Mandic said more than 7500 people used the pool between Monday and Friday mornings, with children enjoying Splash Zone school holiday activities running between 1pm and 4pm. “We had a lot more people coming through the centre over the past week for a way to cool down,” she said. “Definitely more people than usual. “We’ve had enough staff on and keeping refreshments up. “We’ve coped well but I’ll personally be happy once this heatwave is over.”

Taxi minister has no idea
Bottle deposit costs
THANKS to the Journal for its report on the closure of Royal Taxis in Springvale recently (Taxi Cost Trap, Dandenong Journal, Monday 13 January). As a taxi driver and licence operator for more than 20 years I believe the viability of the Victorian taxi industry has been seriously impacted by the austerity measures of the Victorian Coalition and the indifference of the Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder. Outside of peak hour service times, demand for taxis is often very moderate or poor. Taxi fares have not been adjusted since December 2008 while the cost of LPG, at the same time, has now risen by 30 per cent. Most sub-contract or Bailee drivers would find it difficult to make minimum award wages from driving a taxi. That’s the reason why there is a shortage of taxi drivers, Mr Mulder. The Napthine government provides subsidies to the automotive manufacturing industry but has failed to intervene and assist the taxi industry. In fact, Mr Mulder has wasted more than $5 million of taxpayers’ money on a phony inquiry into the taxi industry which produced little more than political propaganda. Since the coalition was voted into office unemployment has increased significantly in Victoria while the growth in transport services has been in public transport and cycling, not taxis. Traffic congestion is now a major problems on all our roads. Again Terry Mulder has no ideas to assist the taxi industry except for blaming us for declining service standards. Terry Mulder claims the 79 taxi licences from Royal Taxis will be taken over by other operators. Well, Terry Mulder is in denial about the negative impact of government policy on taxis and the economy. Any operator taking over the Royal Taxi licences now would be making a very high-risk commercial decision. The taxi industry is under the jurisdiction of a minister with little regard for evidence-based policy and international industry standards. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.
FEDERAL and state environment ministers are considering a proposal to introduce a national Container Deposit Levy (CDL) in Australia. This levy would see Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong residents paying an additional 10 cents on every water bottle, drink can, milk or wine bottle purchased. This is termed as a “deposit”, which can be redeemed if a consumer takes the clean container to new public collection points. Sounds great in theory, doesn’t it? But, unfortunately, the plan simply hasn’t been thought through. There are a host of unintended consequences, including studies that show an estimated $300 will be added to a Greater Dandenong resident’s average annual shopping basket just when they are finding it tough to balance the household budget. The proposals also threaten recycling and garbage collection services, as Greater Dandenong council will find it more costly to run regular recycling collections if these containers are being taken out of the system. On top of this, there is also an increased risk to public health and sanitation caused by the hoarding and scavenging of bottles from private and public bins. The alternative solution is to not only continue with the current scheme but to expand on this through added corporate and public initiatives. For example, over the next 10 years, through the Australian Packaging Covenant, industry aims to invest $115 million in litter reduction and recycling schemes across the country. Ryan Smith is encouraged to keep doing the right thing and resist the concerted push by CDL supporters to have Victoria sign up to a national CDL. Victorians are already doing the right thing and are setting an example to the rest of Australia. Stan Moore, CEO, The National Packaging Covenant Industry Association.

Smoke hampers blaze battle By CASEY NEILL A FACTORY fire in Dandenong South sent plumes of black smoke over surrounding suburbs on Friday. Fire crews were called to Polytrade Recycling in Thomas Murrell Drive about 8.15am on 17 January. Police blocked traffic to the area by closing Ordish Road and the CFA advised residents in Dandenong, Dandenong South and Keysborough that there was no threat to the community. The authority declared the fire safe about 11am but conducted site patrols every 30 minutes for several hours after to make sure. A CFA spokeswoman said the fire was confined to a conveyor belt and another piece of equipment in one section of the factory. “It didn’t actually burn the whole factory down,” she said. She said the cause of the fire had not yet been determined and investigations were ongoing. Polytrade Recycling was established in 1995 to export recyclable plastic grades to the growing South East Asian market.
Smoke from the fire severely reduced visibility as fire crews used a crane to battle the blaze. Since then, Polytrade Recycling has expanded its operations from being a recyclable plastic processor to becoming a key player in the domestic kerbside and commercial recycling sectors across Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. It receives, sorts and processes more than 400,000 tonnes of recyclables each year. The Journal was unable to contact Polytrade before going to print.

Anyone can be an entertainer PULL up a stool and play a tune in Dandenong this week. Public art installation Play Me I’m Yours is taking centre stage at Palm Plaza until 27 January. British artist Luke Jerram created the concept which has previously graced footpaths from Paris to Barcelona. The Dandenong piano is one of 20 street pianos dotted across Melbourne throughout January. Arts Centre Melbourne, which is co-ordinating the project, has used pre-loved and unused pianos. The council’s arts and cultural development co-ordinator Sarah Dugdale said local artists had been engaged to decorate the piano. “This project is designed to encourage community connection and spontaneous moments of creativity,” she said. “You don’t have to be a musician to take part. “The piano is there for everyone to play.” For more information, visit www. streetpianos.com.au.

AUSTRALIA Day celebrations won’t be the only ones happening in Greater Dandenong on 26 January. Springvale will host free Lunar New Year activities from 9am to 9pm to welcome the Year of the Horse, with the festivities centred on Buckingham Avenue. Last year, more than 80,000 flocked to the precinct to enjoy cultural performances, food, firecrackers and more. There’ll be a flag raising ceremony and the national anthem played at 11am, lion and dragon dances, martial arts displays, live bands, games and rides. The festival is based on the lunar calendar and is celebrated on the first full moon of the Lunar New Year. Fifteen days of celebration usually follow. For more information on the Lunar New Year Festival, call the Springvale Asian Business Association on 0418 178 126.

HAMPTON Park man Olivier de Baize has a set of flashy new wheels thanks to a group of generous people. Mr de Baize, who attends Yooralla’s day support service in Noble Park, has cerebral palsy and quadriplegia and requires a wheelchair for mobility. Over time the shape of Mr de Baize’s spine has changed and his back no longer matched the shape of his previous wheelchair, causing him discomfort and the weight making it hard for his carers to push around. His family were $3159 short of the $12,960 needed to purchase a new, suitable wheelchair and that’s when the staff at Bendigo Bank stepped in. The bank’s Community Enterprise Foundation team put out the call to staff to raise money for a new wheelchair and a whip around resulted in enough money being raised for the new wheels. Mr de Baize’s mother Monique said her son has had the new chair for a while and it had made a huge difference to Olivier and those who supported him. “Olivier’s back has become curved over time and the backrest in the new chair moulds to his form, so it is much more comfortable for him to sit in for long periods,” she said. “The new chair is much lighter, so it is easier for us, his parents, and his carers to manoeuvre. “The back and seat have removable covers which make it much easier to clean and the

KIDS at risk are learning the ropes with Greater Dandenong police for a shot at a second chance. The South Eastern (Dandenong) Ropes Course has run since March 2007 for young people coming before the Children’s Court for the first time. The member that charges them can refer them to the ropes course, and if the magistrate agrees they participate in a day of activities at Camp Manyung
in Mt Eliza alongside police members. Sergeant Melissa Blair said the day addressed the youths’ offending and built rapport between them and police. “At the beginning of the day there is a definite division between the young people and the police,” she said. “But as the day evolves you see the attitudes of the young people changing. “The morning tea and lunch break see police and young
people chatting away to each other.” Sgt Blair said that when they received their certificates at the end of the day, they often sought support for resumes, employment, education or other concerns. “As they wander off with their certificates in hand we hope that they remember this day, make the right choices and think about police that they may have contact in the future with… in a different light,” she said.

Vow to tackle high units By CASEY NEILL DANDENONG residents last week slammed council inaction on restricting multi-storey units at a community forum. But City of Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan said help is on its way. Even sweltering conditions didn’t deter up to 90 people from attending a ’meet your local councillors’ forum at Dandenong Library on Tuesday 14 January. Mayor Jim Memeti chaired the meeting alongside councillors Kirwan, Angela Long and Roz Blades. Richard Kenny, a Dandenong resident and ratepayer of nearly 40 years, said the overall tone was one of “widespread community dissatisfaction with our council”. Mr Kenny said most attendees were
“
It feels like the tail wagging the dog. Richard Kenny
concerned with “the council’s apparent inability to control multi-unit developments on what were single residential blocks”. “There is a community feeling that Dandenong is to be treated as a lower class, low-rent suburb,” he said. “There seems to be an unwillingness to accept the future social impacts of multi storey, multi-unit developments. “There appears to be a complete disconnect between the Planning Department and the council. “It feels like the tail wagging the dog.
“And in my view there will be a fair bit of duck-shoving, with a lot of blame - rightly or not - being apportioned to the State Government and VCAT.” Mr Kenny said people also spoke out about a lack of business start-ups, a lack of parking in central Dandenong and poor accessibility to shops in central Dandenong, particularly Lonsdale Street. Silvia Mastrogiovanni, who lives in Dandenong, said it was obvious from the turnout that the people of Greater Dandenong were passionate about their city. “The community, young and old,
attended on very short notice and on a stinker of a day - 43 degrees.” Dandenong resident Melinda, who asked that her surname not be printed, said the attendance showed the level of resident concern about planning. “This is particularly so for residents in the Residential Growth Zone, where there is now a possibility of increased building heights of up to four storeys,” she said. “VCAT appeal rights are not worth the paper they are written on if the City of Greater Dandenong Planning Scheme allows for these developments in the planning controls. “Our planning scheme needs to change and our council has the power to do this.” Cr Kirwan said the council had received this message.
“There was also a strong message that the council needed to do more to encourage apartment growth in the very centre of Dandenong where they felt it was more appropriate, rather than in residential streets which they wanted to preserve for families,” he said. He said councillors would work with council officers on the issue. “And in mid-2014 we anticipate being able to go out to community consultation to seek the community’s views on refining the growth zone areas - not just in Dandenong but in Noble Park and Springvale as well,” he said. “This may mean having ‘sub-areas’ within the growth zone, or perhaps changing zone boundaries or other types of planning controls.”

RACV behind road safety ROAD safety around Dandenong West Primary School has been improved, thanks to an RACV grant of $15,000 to the school through its Good Citizen program. The $15,000 grant was used to install a LED safety sign that displays a range of vital safety messages for the school community, particularly during busy school drop-off and pick-up times. The messages are displayed in multiple languages, addressing the problem the school sometimes ex-
periences when disseminating information to families from diverse cultural backgrounds. Dandenong West Primary School principal Beverley Hansen said the school could not thank RACV enough for its generous support in tackling this critically important safety issue. “We are always looking for opportunities to build relationships with local businesses and RACV has shown its willingness to support our families by providing funding for this safety project,” Ms Hansen said. BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Places in a good place SALES of Places Victoria’s Dandenong eco-industrial business park LOGIS are helping put the struggling business back in front. Bidders outnumbered the 19 lots available in the latest land release, signalling a turnaround for Place Victoria’s financial position. Places Victoria acting CEO Peter Armstrong said the sell out at Dandenong followed a period of solid growth at Places Victoria’s residential estates in Epping and Officer. “We had to swallow a bitter pill
last year, but the decisions made in early 2013 have resulted in a more focused and streamlined organisation that is demonstrating it can be a sustainable business entity,” Mr Armstrong said. LOGIS is a partnership between Places Victoria and Melbourne Water that will transform the 154 hectare former Dandenong treatment plant site into an industrial estate, generating about 5000 jobs for the Greater Dandenong area. Mr Armstrong said 25 compa-
nies from Australia and overseas had competed for land in stages six and seven at LOGIS, including some who were vying for multiple lots, with successful bidders including Australia’s largest tool distributor Hobson Engineering. All lots were contracted within a week of their release to the market, for a combined value of $19.5 million. “Places Victoria’s mandate is to deliver urban renewal projects on behalf of the government and when possible to create opportunities for the
private sector,” Mr Armstrong said. “LOGIS is a perfect example of this - it’s expected to attract more than $480 million in private sector investment by the time it’s finished from a public investment of less than half that.” Additional lots in stages six and seven at LOGIS will be released to the market early this year, with strong sales expected. Places Victoria will also see returns in mid-2014 from the $25.05 million sale of the Cardinia Shire Civic Centre at Pakenham.
Good time at Disneyland DANDENONG’S Amelia Ameti will celebrate her 10th birthday at Disneyland - all thanks to a freezer. Her dad Leka bought the appliance from The Good Guys in Dandenong late last year and entered a competition to win a family trip to the Californian theme park. His name was drawn as one of 20 winners across the state during December. Mr Ameti’s wife Rovena and son Daniel will also make the journey to the US. “We haven’t been overseas for a few years because of construction work and have always wanted to go to Disneyland!” he said. “It was the best Christmas present we could have asked for! “We’re all looking forward to spending time together and celebrating Amelia’s birthday.”
Leka Ameti accepts his prize with daughter Amelia, son Daniel and wife Rovena.

SUMMER HOMES AND GARDENS
Be cool ... play it safe HOUSE fires are more often thought of as a winter problem, but Energy Safe Victoria and fire authorities say summer can also be a risky time. As Victoria sweltered through its hottest November night since 1901 last week Energy Safe Victoria, Metropolitan Fire Brigade and CFA have urged householders and business owners to get their air conditioners and evaporative coolers serviced in time for summer. So far this year Victoria’s fire services have attended more than 40 incidents, at both residential and non-residential premises, relating to air-conditioners, evaporative coolers, portable cooling units and appliances. Victoria’s Director of Energy Safety, Paul Fearon, said while many Victorian homes had airconditioners or evaporative coolers not many people took the time to get them serviced each year. He said all air-conditioners and evaporative cooling units should be serviced each year to ensure they were operating at maximum efficiency and to help prevent problems that could cause an electrical fault or fire.
“We’re already seeing some very warm weather so it’s a good time to get your air-conditioner or cooling unit serviced to ensure that it’s in good working order before the long, hot days and nights arrive. “Regular maintenance not only allows manufacturer’s upgrades and adjustments to be made, it ensures your air conditioner or evaporative cooler will be working safely and efficiently when you need it most,” Mr Fearon said. He said annual servicing of cooling appliances could also help to identify problems that could cause an electrical fault or fire, adding it was also important to get portable coolers serviced. “This year Victoria’s fire services have already responded to a number of fires caused by these appliances and we don’t want to see any more this summer,” he said. He said householders could also help to keep their units working properly by ensuring the dust filters were cleaned regularly.
Feed your interest GROWING vegetables in pots is a fantastic way to eat fresh and save money over summer. Whether it’s space, time or physical ability that rules out the big backyard vegie plot, growing vegetables and herbs in pots can a rewarding way to get out in the garden over summer and reap the culinary rewards.
Potted success in six easy steps: 1. Choose a spot for your pots which gets five to six hours of sun each day. If your garden is shaded, include some smaller pots that can be moved around to catch the sun. 2. Decide what vegetables or herbs you

fancy. Vegetables that can be planted now include tomatoes, lettuce varieties, zucchini, Warragul greens, capsicums, silver beet, radish, parsley, oregano, basil, leeks, Vietnamese mint, fennell. Ask your local nurseryman for other ideas. 3. Choose the right type of pot for the plant and for your decor. Larger pots can be planted up with a mix of lettuce or herbs but basically any shallowrooted plants will grow successfully in pots that are around 25cm deep. Standard tomatoes and root crops such as beetroot will need at least 35 to 40 centimetres in depth.
Hanging baskets can also be great space savers and there is a good selection of tomatoes now available which thrive in a basket. Strawberries can also be grown in baskets. Baskets will however dry out more quickly so need more attention to watering. 4. Use a good quality potting mix, preferably with a slow-release fertiliser, or add a slow-release fertiliser to the mix. 5. Water seedlings in with a good quality liquid fertiliser and continue to feed every two to three weeks to ensure a good crop. 6. Crushed egg-shells scattered around seedlings will deter snails and slugs.
Plant herbs in smaller pots and move to catch the sun. 90991
Hanging baskets are a great space-saver and ideal for some of the smaller tomato varieties. 90991

The 2014 concert will be held on Saturday 15 February from 4.30pm to 8.30pm at The Gurdies Winery. Just over an hour from Melbourne, The Gurdies hamlet is one of Victoria’s remaining unspoilt and undiscovered coastal locations. Set high in the Bass hinterland with majestic views over Western Port, the area is also the location for some of Victoria’s finest boutique wineries. “We are indeed fortunate to have someone of the calibre of John O’May to perform at our event. “He is widely acclaimed for his musical talent both nationally and internationally,” Helen said. The headline act will also feature Anton Berezin, Theresa Borge and Lisa Parker who have appeared in a large number of productions internationally, including Phantom of the Opera, Cats and Les Miserables. For on-line tickets visit www.sereandeatsunset.com or book by phone on 5672 2597. Tickets are from $25 and are also on sale at Alex Scott Grantville and Cowes, the RACV Shop, Wonthaggi, and Corinella and District Community Centre.

The colour of Opal
Leilani Mitchell was selected for an Australian Opals’ training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport. 113111 Picture: BASKETBALL AUSTRALIA
By JARROD POTTER ONLY months after first arriving in Australia, Leilani Mitchell has already been earmarked as one of the country’s top female basketballers. Mitchell, 28, from Washington, USA, has been a successful player in the American WNBA league, playing 204 games over six seasons with the New York Liberty, but this Australian summer she has made the most of her unique heritage. This past WNBL off-season her agent found her an opportunity to play basketball in Australia and in an immense bonus for the Dandenong Rangers, Mitchell qualified as a domestic player and not as an import player (capped at two per squad) due to her dual American/Australian citizenship. “My first year professional, I actually wanted - and asked - my agent if Australia was a possibility… he just kind of shot it down as they (Australian teams) didn’t have the finances that some of the European teams have… he encouraged me to go to Europe… that’s where most of the people (players) go as well,”
Mitchell said. “I was looking for my first year… then put it to the side, then my agent came to me this previous American summer in May/June and asked me if I would be interested.” Since taking up Dandenong’s offer, Mitchell has been one of the WNBL’s best point guards and her WNBL statline - 12.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game. Her ability to control the point guard position brought her to the attention of Australian Opals’ national coach Brendan Joyce, who invited her to the Opals’ camp in Canberra last week. “It was great news obviously I did have some roots here so it’s a great opportunity,” Mitchell said. “It’s nice to go to the camp and we’ll have a few more so hopefully I’ll be invited back to hopefully make the team.” Life in Australia so far has suited Mitchell off and on the court and she hopes to continue her successful summer in either form of the green and gold she wears, whether at Dandenong or with the Opals.
“It’s been amazing - a little hot now, but it’s been great. I love the city and there’s so much to do and so much going on,” Mitchell said. “It’s (WNBL) a tough competition and our own team has gone through its struggles but hopefully we’re getting that sorted out. “We had a good weekend the last weekend and we’re trying to ride that wave and continue playing like we did.” Mitchell isn’t sure what’s ahead of her - with Opals camps and selections all leading towards the FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey from 27 September to 5 October - but has her fingers crossed that an Australian jersey is in her immediate future. “He (Joyce) can’t say too much we’ve got try outs and camps so whoever he likes or fits the team best he’ll choose. “He’s told me that he’s interested and that I can contribute to helping out the Opals so hopefully that happens.” Mitchell and her Dandenong Rangers team host Adelaide next Friday night at 7.30pm.
Bravo... fuelled to win By JASON ADAMS YOUNGSTER Gimme Fuel claimed his first win at Sandown Park last Thursday night, the first of three winners for Group 1 winning trainer Kelly Bravo. Gimme Fuel began fast from box one before having a slight bump with Lektra Bianca shortly after the start, but accelerated away and lead all the way easily winning by eight lengths in a smart time of 29.49. Gimme Fuel was undefeated after his first five race starts, but his inconsistent early pace has previously landed him in traffic. ‘’He can be a bit hit or miss out of the boxes, I think it’s something he will get better at over time’’ said Bravo. At not even two-and-half years-of-age Gimme Fuel has a big future ahead of him, already having eight wins from just 18 starts and with last Thursday’s win elevating his prize money to $34,900. Plans were for him to compete in the Group 2 Great Chase series throughout October, though he was not at the fitness level needed to progress through the series, Bravo saying; ‘’He wasn’t up to scratch at that stage, he wasn’t at peak fitness and had a lot of improvement left in him.’’ Bravo completed a winning treble taking out races 9, 10 and 11 making it three from three with Gimme Fuel, Chinchero and Take Charge all saluting

specials on house beer and wine, soft drink, sausages, face painting and not forgetting $2 kids show bags. Sandown will also be hosting the Sensational Summer for Kids on Sunday 26 January, including activities competitions and prizes on the day as well as free food and drinks.

Rangers watch the Fire burn By JARROD POTTER A SECOND-HALF blitz from Dandenong shook off a determined Townsville - with the Rangers running out 20-point winners. The first half went from end to end as Suzy Batkovic (25 points, 11 rebounds) kept the Fire in touch, but an injury to captain Rachael McCully halted Townsville’s offensive leaving point duties to Micaela Cocks and youngster Tiana Mangakahia. The Rangers worked their way to the front late in both first half quarters as shots from Natalie Novosel and Leilani Mitchell found the basket in the dying seconds. The second half was chalk and cheese as Townsville ran out of puff - following a surprise 81-70 victory over the Bendigo Spirit on Saturday night. Dandenong found its long-range game after half-time with Jenna O’Hea (23 points, six rebounds, six assists) and Alice Kunek (21 points) feasting on the free space. Kayla Pedersen (10 points, eight
rebounds) and Brigette Ardossi (four points) kept Batkovic accountable under the ring. Coach Mark Wright said the win continued the form of last week on the Queensland circuit - and to knock off Townsville at home was a great sign for Dandenong shutting out teams. “That was the worry - that they came off such a big game yesterday (Saturday) that their confidence will be sky-high.” Wright said. “The last three games we’ve turned a corner I think and every time we get a win going forward... it will make me believe that we’ve turned a corner and mentally got ourselves on the right side of positive basketball.” Another graduate of the Dandenong junior development ranks, Rachel Antoniadou, earned the debut seconds of her WNBL career in the victory. Fresh off a bye, the Adelaide Lightning will descend on Dandenong Basketball Stadium on Friday to face the now 12-5 Rangers.

The Forsyth saga
Way out west
By JARROD POTTER
By JARROD POTTER
DANDENONG (5/276dec and 1/44) made ground on the top of the Premier Cricket ladder with a clinical outright victory to dispatch Hawthorn-Monash University (128 and 191). Starting the day in need of runs, with first innings points already secured, Andrew Gale (100) raised the willow for his first Premier century before hitting out after reaching the milestone. It left the young pairing of Cameron Forsyth (104 not out) and Jack Worrell (23) at the crease in search of a quick-fire partnership and a milestone on offer for Forsyth. Dandenong blazed through the Hawthorn-Monash University bowling attack as Fosyth and Worrell ran the hard threes and rocketed boundaries on a slow outfield at Monash University. Worrell would fall to D. O’Shea (1/67) before Forsyth continued his chase towards triple figures and the declaration. With a boundary cannoned through the offside off a full-bodied cut shot, For-
syth reached the magic milestone his first in Victorian Premier Cricket - with Tom Donnell calling the declaration immediately afterwards. Dandenong gave itself a chance to take outright points with exceptional bowling as Dan Doran (4/75) span his way through the middle order following the strong work of Justin Butterfield (2/33) and Nathan Lambden with the new nugget, before Matt Willcocks (2/12) took out the tailenders. Hawthorn-Monash University had defenders in David Alleyne (79) and Nathan Willoughby (37) and Daniel Rogers (30), but the rest of the attack failed to hold Dandenong out. Five and a fraction overs were all Donnell (24) and Brett Forsyth (14) needed to chase the remaining runs and take the outright points. The win pushes Dandenong up to ninth on the ladder, only percentage outside of the top eight. Dandenong hosts Melbourne Uni this coming round for a two-dayer at Shepley Oval.
An expansive cut-shot from Dandenong’s Cameron Forsyth takes him from 96 to his maiden Victorian Premier Cricket century. 113137 Picture: JARROD POTTER
WHAT’S ON this week
THE long voyage out west paid dividends for Noble Park (6/168), with the Bulls taking a narrow victory over Sunshine (152). Batting first, Noble Park anchored around Marasinghe Perera (54) with the number three gaining strong assistance down the order from Mevan Fernando (31). A few starts weren’t capitalised upon by the Bulls, with captain Dean Edmunds (15) and Johan Vorster (16) unable to kick on, leaving Noble Park in the noman’s land between 150 and 200 for a 45-over chase. The Noble Park bowlers took that tally and made it work as once again the Bulls’ bowling maestro Rizan Mawzoon (5/25) made sure there wouldn’t be a successful Sunshine chase. Troy Stone (71 not out) was the only Sunshine batsman to hold his ground as Mawzoon, Perera (2/28) and Anthony Salomon (2/35) ran through the order. The developing partnership of Stone and David Bonavia (27) was destroyed when Perera found Bonavia plumb in front to stop the 61-run partnership. From there on everyone chipped in to rattle through the tail to leave Sunshine 16 short. Noble Park betters its record to 6-0-3 and holds down fourth on the VSDCA East/West 1st XI ladder, with the challenge this coming round put to them by Yarraville at Pat Wright Senior Oval.

SPORT Dandenong District Cricket Association - round 8 (one day)
What a difference a day makes By JARROD POTTER THE last DDCA one-dayers went off with a bang as anyone from second to seventh could squeeze into finals.
North Dandenong v Hallam Kalora Park Hallam Kalora Park (147) could not fight back the renewed and invigorated North Dandenong (6/148), with the Northerners taking their fifth win in a row. Economical bowling from New Zealand import Jurgen Andersen (3/9) left Hallam on the ropes before the one-two punch of Glen Pepper (2/40) and Clay McCartney (2/9) finished off the rest, leaving a moderate chase at Lois Twohig Reserve. Starting strongly via George Russell (21), North Dandenong’s openers soon departed and left the job to Craig Gunawardana (65 not out). With support from Dean Gunawardana (16), Andersen (16) and Shane Clark (10 not out), the home side eked out a four-wicket victory with an over to spare. It leaves the Northerners in the strange predicament of having more wins than four of the five teams above them, yet they remain in sixth on account of outright victories and draws.
Narre Warren v Buckley Ridges Posting 81 won’t usually get a team six points, but somehow Buckley Ridges (81) pulled it out of the bag with a quick dismissal of Narre Warren (75). The Buckley top-order resembled a children’s counting book - Luke Fletcher (1), B. Watson (0), Antonio Greenidge (93), Dan Haasbroek (0) and Suren Ekanayake (3) equalled 5/10 following devastating spells from Kaushalya Weeraratne (3/20) and Jarryd Straker (4/12). It left the lion-share of the work to one man and he was injured at that. Batting with a runner, the only man to stand up and create accountability was Paul
Suren Gallage posted 82 to give Parkfield something to defend against Berwick. 113135 Rudd (32 not out) who batted through the innings to grant the Ridges something to defend. In reply, Fletcher (3/15) and Jeremy Kuru (4/20) ran through the Magpies’ order in only 23.3 overs. Weeraratne (20) and Pramod Liyanagamage (28) were the only fighting Narre batsmen as the Ridg-
es stormed to victory by five runs in an amazing low-scoring encounter. Buckley Ridges sits fifth, only separated by percentage to the top four.

SPORT REGISTRATIONS
Picture: JARROD POTTER Lyndale - mainly its star all-rounder Jaime Brohier. Brohier did it all and is now one of the frontrunners for the Wookey Medal following a 4/21 performance with the ball to remove Coomoora on the cheap before chasing the runs down with seven overs to spare in his 73 not out. Rahoul Pankania (31) and Lance Baptist (27) helped push the Kangaroos to their tally with an over left in the ledger. From there the match belonged to Brohier as he found partnerships with Dale Tormey (21) and Ciaron Connolly (16 not out) to secure an emphatic eight-wicket win and gain valuable percentage in a tight race for finals. Lyndale sits third, three behind Mordialloc and in the pack of contenders all the way to seventh.

Berwick’s (3/196) Sri Lankan connection made the first dent in Parkfield (8/192) this year, despite the best efforts of Suren Gallage (82). David Ford (30) was first to get into gear for the Bears as did Jarrod Williamson (22). Steve Spoljaric (13) couldn’t repeat his efforts of last week, leaving the scoring initiative up to Gallage. Gallage batted with the tail to post a difficult chase for Berwick. Thilan Samaraweera (41), Gavan Wills (21) opened the scoring before falling to Shane Bell (1/32) and Matt Aslett (1/50) respectively. The match-winning 109-run partnership came from Bathiya Perera (60 not out) and Nirmal Wickramaratne (46 not out) as Berwick kept its finals hopes alive at the expense of Parkfield’s unbeaten season to date. Springvale South versus Dandenong West was held on Sunday after the Dandenong Journal went to print.

Kia Koup coupe’s coup By ALISTAIR KENNEDY
Model range
THE Kia Koup, or Kia Cerato Koup to give it its full title, has been on sale in Australia since 2009. As the name suggests, the Koup is a coupe, a twodoor version that’s based on the Cerato four-door sedan. The second-generation Koup arrived here in November 2013 adding some performance substance to its already sporty style in the form of an optional turbocharged petrol engine. The all-new Kia Koup is larger in all exterior dimensions, both length and wheelbase increased by 50mm, height up by 10mm and width by 15mm. Transmission options on both models are six-speed manual and automatic with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters fitted to the Koup Turbo. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is listed at 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres from the manual Turbo and 8.0 L/100km from the auto.
Si 2.0-litre petrol three-door coupe: $23,990 (manual), $26,190 (automatic); Turbo 1.6-litre turbo-petrol two-door coupe: $27,990 (manual), $30,190 (automatic); Turbo Touring 1.6-litre turbo-petrol two-door coupe: $30,190 (manual), $32,390 (automatic).
We used 8.4 L/100km during our test of the automatic Koup Turbo. Despite its sleek styling there a surprising amount of space inside the Kia Koup. It does have five seats but can realistically only cope with three children or two adults in the rear. Rear headroom is borderline and any passenger over 1.7 metres in height should make sure they get the front seat. Small side windows won’t be appreciated by rear seat passengers and could lead to the dreaded boredom with kids back there. Access to the rear seats
The Cerato Koup is the first Kia to come to Australia with turbo power. is helped by the wide frameless doors although they do need caution when opening them in cramped parking areas. One criticism from the previous model has been addressed with the addition of a handle at the top of the front seats that both folds and slides the front seat forward at the same time. The maximum boot capacity space is 433 litres with a full-size spare wheel under the floor raising the boot floor although there are
small storage compartments wrapping around the spare. A 60/40 split for the rear seat can provide extra luggage room if needed. The Cerato Koup comes well-equipped, with much of the equipment you find in a more expensive model as standard. Bluetooth telephone and audio streaming that, unlike many others, is simple and logical to pair and operate is helped by a colour touch screen. At just 4.3 inches the
standard screen is a bit tricky to use - a 7.0-inch screen is available with the optional ($2200) Touring Pack that also includes satellite navigation, DVD player, dual-zone climate control air conditioning, clean air module and auto defog system. Entry into the Koup is easier than for most sporty cars and an extender that holds the seat belt overcomes the typical problem of having to stretch well back to reach the belts. The extender also folds down to keep the seat belt out of the way when getting into the rear seats. The instrument cluster is neat and the dials are easy to read. An information centre at the bottom of the cluster gives details of trips, fuel usage, engine temperature, distance to empty and doors open. The steering wheel is tilt and telescopic adjustable and vision is good all-round thanks to the frameless door glass.
