Parade spirit lives on By REBECCA BILLS MARYSVILLE’S annual Australia Day Parade is embracing all things Australian to celebrate life in the land down under. Event organiser Graham Alman said the Marysville Australia Day Parade has been running for around seven years and is something that has grown in the community since the Black Saturday fires. “It is one of the few events of the year where it doesn’t matter if you are young or old, you can still participate,” he said. “At the start of the parade we have flags from most countries around world and various community members carries a flag that means something to them. “There is one Italian gentleman who has lived in our district for years that carries the Italian flag - it’s a nice way to embrace all cultures living in our community.” Mr Alman said the event is open to everyone to celebrate all things that make up Australia. “We have a number of groups that come every year including various car clubs as well as the Lions Club, footy club and Girl Guides to name a few,” he said. “It really is about everyone coming together and having a good time.” The celebrations after the parade will be hosted in Lions Park and will hear from the area’s Australia Day Ambassador Gerry Hanily, a man who is passionate about Australian spirit and way of life. Murrindindi Mayor Margaret Rae said Australia Day was a day on which we could reflect on what it means to be Australian and celebrate community achievements.

Fun day remembers mate AFTER losing his best mate to diabetes last November, Jason Long has organised a family fun day and fund-raiser on Australia Day in his memory. Local Yarra Junction resident Luke Quick died of complications related to the disease late last year. He was a man who always celebrated Australia Day with a party. Mr Long said his friend loved the day and hosting an event like this was a perfect fit to remember his best friend and improve diabetes awareness in the community. “There are two aspects to the day,” he said. “It’s a family fun day and it is also a day to raise money to go towards diabetes research or into a trust account for Luke’s six-year-old daughter, Lani, for her future education. “Given the Yarra Valley has one of the highest rates of diabetes in Australia we hope the lo-

cal community will come together to support this day.” The Yarra Valley Australia Day Fund-raiser Event will be held on Sunday 26 January at the Yarra Junction Football Ground from 1.30pm. Mr Long said the response from the local community has been great with donations of champagne, furniture, push-bikes, meal vouchers and more coming in to be raffled off on the day. The event will also have children’s activities including a petting zoo, jumping castle and other rides for a gold coin donation as well as entertainment by local bands and a sausage sizzle.

n Ombudsman reports Yarra Ranges Council has “no conflict” in campus plans

Umpire rules By MELISSA MEEHAN AFTER months waiting stagnant, the Yarra Ranges Council has been found to have no conflict of interest in the study of the best use of the Swinburne Lilydale site. Since November, the Yarra Ranges Council and the independent committee charged with completing a study of the site have waited for the Ombudsman’s report into a conflict of interest claim made in parliament by Labor MLC Shaun Leane. He claimed that there was an obvious conflict considering the council’s vocal and public intention to use part of the site for its new council offices. Mr Leane’s claims caused the government funding to be frozen until the report was complete. Last week the Ombudsman found the council had no conflict of interest in the matter. Evelyn MP and vocal supporter of finding another educational use for the site, Christine Fyffe slammed Mr Leane for halting the study on the future of the campus. “The Yarra Ranges Council and their independent expert committee, headed up by respected academic and educator Professor Barbara van Ernst AM, had to stop work immediately thanks to Mr Leane’s frivolous claims,” Ms Fyffe said. “The current situation is frustrating, especially given that the study was close to completion.” She said despite the Ombudsman finding no conflict of interest, Mr Leane’s comments have forced the council to withdraw from the study. “This political point-scoring by Mr Leane has delayed the reopening of the Lilydale campus,” she said. Member of the committee Bernard Donson said that he could attest to the fact that the Yarra Ranges Council was very careful to allow research to find alternative providers to use the site. It now looks as though there will be no students starting at the campus at the beginning of the 2014 school year, and unless action is taken, the facility could not be used until 2015.

POLICE cordoned off nearby streets as a man believed to be brandishing a weapon held them at bay for three hours in Mount Evelyn on Tuesday. Members of the Special Operations Group were brought in to deal with the situation as the man, a 48-year-old from Lilydale, threatened self-harm in gruelling temperatures. Police set up a staging area near the David Road property where members of the SOG squad were flown in by helicopter, with a result achieved a short time later.

Play highlights fire threats By REBECCA BILLS MONTROSE Primary School students enjoyed their annual netball game with Montrose CFA to help promote bushfire awareness. The grade five and six students at the school thrashed the Montrose CFA team 14 to seven in a heated match on Friday 13 December with Captain Koala cheering on from the side lines. Montrose CFA firefighter Ryan Smith said the day aimed to get the community ready for the upcoming fire season. “This is an annual event that we run to promote the upcoming fire season and create awareness in children and their families especially in the Montrose community,” he said. “This time of year is usually the start of the fire danger period and although this year’s danger warnings have been delayed because

of all the rain, everybody still needs to have a plan. “Having an event like this means we can have a fun day with the school and relay our message to the community. Montrose Primary School principal Neil Pollard said not only does the school need to have an up-to-date fire plan ready, every household needs ones. “That’s why the Montrose CFA is here, to spread that message,” he said. “After the game they have a chat to the students and make sure they go home and ask the parents about their fire plan. “You need to freshen up each year otherwise you get complacent and forget.” Advice on updating fire plans can be found at www.cfa.vic.gov.au.

Kids plant deep learning roots By REBECCA BILLS EAGER little hands from Kallista Kindergarten took part in a tree planting ceremony early this month to thank Parks Victoria. The children gathered with parents and staff alongside Parks Victoria staff, Yarra Ranges councillor Samantha Dunn and field officer Claire Rock to plant the tree. The kindergarten partnered with Parks Victoria this year to implement a nature kinder program which enabled children to explore and embrace nature in learning. The kinder has met every week in 2013 at the George Tindale Memorial Garden in the rain, hail or shine where the four-year-old students explored, played with natural materials, climbed trees and enjoyed lunch together on the grass. President and parent at Kallista Kindergarten Julie Konda said the children

were grateful for Parks Victoria’s enthusiasm and planting the tree is a way of giving something back to the space they have enjoyed all year. “This garden space allocated to our program has been explored, climbed, rolled on, trampled, poked, picked, plucked and played with by many little hands,” she said. “We hope they take away great memories of being here and have forged a connection with the joy of being outdoors. “We are so lucky to live in the Dandenong Ranges but when you have busy lives it’s easy to take for granted and forgot how incredibly lucky we are.” Dandenong Ranges Gardens Manager David Adeson said it is fantastic to see the children interact with the garden at such a young age. “There have been studies that show the clear benefits that if you have chil-

dren interacting with the environment it produces a healthy society,” he said. Mr Adeson said having the program in the gardens has increased its value as a community asset. “We maintain this place for the community and it’s a stunning garden,” he said. “We would happily see programs like this extended with us.” Kallista Kindergarten also achieve the highest rating during a recent Department of Education and Early Development assessment process after exceeding national quality standards in all areas that they were judged on. The nature kinder program was the brainchild of director and teacher at Kallista Kindergarten Lu-Ann Randall who said the program’s success this year means it will extend to all three and four-year-old kinder group in 2014. “Our nature kinder program has

A DECLARED fire danger period for Yarra Ranges began at 1am yesterday, Monday 20 January. During the fire danger period open air burning will be prohibited without a permit. More information on fire restrictions can be found in the CFA brochure “Can I or Can’t I?” on the CFA’s website http:// www.cfa.vic.gov.au/warnings-restrictions/can/ Yarra Ranges Council mayor Fiona McAllister reminded residents to ensure their properties were cleaned up and they had a fire plan for the season. “If you haven’t already done so, I urge you to finish your fire preparations and know exactly what you will do on a high risk or code red day,” she said. “This season we are remembering five years since the events of Black Saturday. It is a timely reminder of how living in and around the bush means we need to be prepared for bushfires. “We certainly hope this season passes without any serious incidents.” Yarra Ranges Council and the CFA have information available online to help residents in their preparation. Check out www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/gettingfireready or call 1300 368 333 for more information.

Myki gets a top-up By REBECCA BILLS MYKI is now available in Mount Evelyn after a year-long battle to secure the Mount Evelyn Post Office as a licensed Myki retail agent. After numerous rejected applications to Myki by Mount Evelyn Post Office manager Kathie Freeman, she took the matter to local MP Christine Fyffe. “Too me it seemed ridiculous that they weren’t allowing a Myki outlet in Mount Evelyn,” she said. Myki is a reusable smart card ticket to travel on Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses and works by a ‘top-up’ system at designated train stations, retailers, all 7-Eleven stores and online Ms Freeman said the closest outlet that you can purchase a Myki card or ‘top-up’ is in Lilydale or online. “Internet access throughout Mount Evelyn is very hit and miss and depending on locality people don’t have access to the top-up facilities,” she said. “I wrote to Christine as I saw it as a need, as did she.” Ms Fyffe said her request for action to Parliament last year really got the ball rolling in getting the department to look at licensing the venue. “Kathie told me how she was having up to two customers a day coming in wanting to know if she

type one diabetes that are aged 15 years or under. “Time away from parents is not something that young people with type one diabetes often experience as the chronic condition is managed either with several insulin injections a day or by an insulin pump,” she said. At the camp, Phebe, along with the other children, learnt how to give themselves insulin injections in a step forward to self-management of the condition. “I learnt how to give myself needles in my hips and the back of my arms,” she said. “I also learnt to be more responsible with my needles and my testing.” Camp-goers enjoyed

activities such as surfing, indoor climbing, fishing, canoeing and much, much more under the supervision of 32 volunteers, 13 diabetes nurse educators, an onsite doctor, dietician and dietician assistant. Type one diabetes is one of the most common and fastest growing chronic conditions in Australia. Diabetes Victoria said almost 200 young people living with type one diabetes miss out on diabetes camps due to a lack of funds. To help send a child living with the condition to the camp, a tax deductable donation can be made to the organisation at www.diabetesvic.org. au.

Friends and family mark Josh ’Turbo’ Matthew’s birthday by releasing balloons at 12.12pm. 113226

Josh’s legacy lives on By JESSE GRAHAM A BIRTHDAY balloon release for the late Josh Matthews at the weekend involved family and friends with generous donations flowing and more than $1000 raised for charity. The balloon release was held on Saturday 18 January at Lillydale Lake, with around 80 people gathering on a hill by the waterline to remember their fallen friend. The day would have marked

Coldstream teenager Josh Matthew’s 18th birthday, and balloons were released at 12.12pm - the time of his birth - before the crowd sung Happy Birthday. Josh died late last year from an asthma attack, and his activities in the community drew around 1000 people to his funeral in Mount Evelyn. His mother, Nikki Thomas, organised the event for his birthday,

which doubled as a fund-raiser for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF). Ms Thomas said that the event followed Josh’s active work in fund-raising throughout his life and the recent diagnosis of his aunt, Sue Contarino, with ovarian cancer. The event raised $1201 through donations from the visitors to the balloon release, which will go straight to OCRF. Ms Thomas, along with Sue’s husband Steve, will be walking the Kokoda Track

around August to continue to raise funds. The $1201 raised at the balloon release will augment roughly $5000 already raised for OCRF by Mr Contarino through an Everyday Hero page. Ms Thomas said she would like to make the event for Josh’s birthday an annual fund-raiser for different charities, and urged anyone interested in helping out to get in contact via the R.I.P. Josh Matthews/Turbo Facebook page.

STREET parades, festivals and a year of events are all on the cards for Healesville, as it celebrates 150 years in the Yarra Valley. Chamber of Commerce President Graham Taylor and Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister were some of the many community members who gathered in Queens Park with a cake last week, to mark the beginning of Healesville’s 150th year. The symbolic cake, which was not real, contrasted the very real excitement in the air from community members eager to celebrate the town and its history. Community 3777 are spear-heading the campaign for a year of celebrations in the town to mark the milestone year and chair of the group, Kath Holton, urged residents to get on board. She said the group have recently set up a Twitter account and website for community members. “We really want people to post on the website’s calendar what event they might be running - whether it is 150th related or not,” she said. The year’s events will culminate around November, with a 150th birthday street parade in Healesville. The Healesville Music Festival has also been rescheduled for November to coincide. For more information or to help with events, visit www.healesville1 50.org, www.facebook. com/C3777 or www.twitter.com/Healesville150.

Rare bug paralyses

By REBECCA BILLS

She said that a neighbour had a similar experience with her dog, after taking it to the recreation reserve around the same time. However, Healesville veterinarian Brett Chester said that the chances of developing botulism from drinking at a large, infected water body were “next to nothing”. He said the symptoms for botulism are similar to that of polyradiculoneuritis, also known as coonhound paralysis, and that dogs have less susceptibility to botulism. “The chances of a dog getting it (botulism) are very remote,” he said. “There’s no direct proof - no tests that we can run to prove it was one or the other. “There’s no way we can differentiate if we had more cases, suspicion would increase.” Dr Chester said there are few tests for either affliction - and fewer ways of differentiating the two - but that botulism is caused by a toxin in bacteria that is occasionally found in rotting carcases and food. He said that both animals were recovering well from their paralysis and Ms Vincent said that Tess is walking around properly now.

By JESSE GRAHAM A VET has been left with few answers after two dogs were paralysed over the New Year period and a rare infection is being named as the cause. Healesville resident Chrissie Vincent believes that her dog, Tess, contracted botulism after swimming in the Don Road Recreation Reserve’s lake on Christmas Eve. She said that four days after swimming in the lake her dog was unable to pick herself up off of the ground and couldn’t walk and that by the following week the dog was completely paralysed. Ms Vincent then went through a $1600 ordeal going to various specialists and clinics to have Tess checked over for snakebites and to have blood tests done. Meanwhile, Tess was unable to move and had to be transported in a trolley speciallymade by Ms Vincent’s husband. The tests came up negative, though Ms Vincent said the specialists believe the affliction may have been botulism, which she believes was caused by Tess drinking the stagnant water at the recreation reserve.

Umpire rules ‘no conflict’ on uni By MELISSA MEEHAN AFTER months waiting stagnant, the Yarra Ranges Council has been found to have no conflict of interest in the study of the best use of the Swinburne Lilydale site. Since November, the Yarra Ranges Council and the independent committee charged with completing a study of the site have waited for the Ombudsman’s report into a conflict of interest claim made in parliament by Labor MLC Shaun Leane. He claimed that there was an ob-

ailable v A y l n O urton at Warb ille and Sev

vious conflict considering the council’s vocal and public intention to use part of the site for its new council offices.

Recycling pick-up ‘at risk’

It now looks as though there will be no students starting at the campus at the beginning of the 2014 school year, and unless action is taken - the facility could not be used until 2015.

KERBSIDE recycling collections may be under threat if a decision is agreed to introduce a Container Deposit Levy (CDL) in the Hills. The proposal is currently being reviewed by Federal and State environment ministers and would see residents paying an additional 10 cents on every water bottle, drink can, milk, wine and other drink bottles purchased. CEO of the National Packaging Covenant Industry Association (NPCIA) Stan Moore said he wanted residents to be aware of the likely consequences of the proposed CDL and to protect their valued kerbside collection scheme. He said bottles and cans would likely be diverted to the CDL and public collection points instead of their usual kerbside recycling bins. Mr Moore said estimates suggested that metropolitan local councils may lose between $2100 and $8300 per thousand household annually. “Residents have become used to the convenience and efficiency of putting all their packaging, including bottles, cans and paper out for recycling,” he said. “It’s become a way of life for most of us. If this happens residents will have to separate, collect their containers, store them and then organise to take them to a collection point.” Mr Moore said if the CDL is introduced, it could force Yarra Ranges Shire and Cardinia Shire councils to reduce or even stop altogether kerbside collection in the area. “Some people, especially those living in an apartment or townhouse, will find it difficult to store a large number of cans and bottles,” he said. “Others, especially those more elderly or less mobile, will find it difficult to transport them to a public collection point.” Mr Moore said the people of the Dandenong Ranges should be proud of their achievements over the last 10 years as recycling rates have rocketed, littler levels plummeted and residents have reduced their impact on the environment. Residents who want to take action can complete a petition to continue to Do the Right Thing and not introduce the CDL. The petition can be found at www.dotherightthing.com.au.

Pages from the past Healesville Guardian 20 January 1934 Around About Healesville THE hot spell this week at Healesville saw an outbreak of fire in the scrub adjoining the property of Professor Payne at West Healesville. A number of members of the Healesville Fire Brigade under Lieutenant Robertson were conveyed to the scene in Mr. J. Baker’s motor car. They performed good work in beating out the flames and quelling the outbreak. The funeral of Mr. Clyde Smith, who met his death in such tragic circumstances this week, was held in the Healesville Cemetery this week. Among those who jointed the cortege were Cr. S.B. Mowie (Shire President) Cr. A.R. Blackwood, Mr. J.B. Hansen (Shire Secretary) and Mr.

Fatality at Healesville A MARRIED man, Clyde William Smith, aged 39 years, carpenter, Healesville met his death in a very unexpected and sudden manner on Tuesday morning. He was employed by the shire council in effecting repairs to a fence surrounding a small reserve opposite Queen’s Park, known as ‘The Nook’. He left there to fetch some timber from the dismantled electric power house a short distance away in Recreation Road. He had obtained the timber and was finishing loading it onto a lorry when a large limb from an old overhanging gum tree suddenly broke away about 70 feet above and struck the de-

Warburton Mail January 24 1964 UPPER Yarra Council Submits Evidence at Inquiry re Dam in Warburton area. Upper Yarra Shire Council put its case before the State Parliamentary Public Works Committee which continued the inquiry it is conducting into recommendations by the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works for the future supply of water for the Melbourne Metropolitan area. The case for the Upper Yarra was ably put to the Committee by Cr. S. Greive. He expressed the Council’s viewpoint that they object to the further encroachment on the occupied areas of the Shire.

The construction of this dam would necessitate the acquisition of freehold property of a capital value of £512,320 consisting of 142 assessments as well as two mills, a public hall, church and state school. This naturally will inflict hardship on all the people who have their houses and land in the area. They will not only lose their way of life but will be compelled to re-establish themselves and in all probability transfer to other parts of the state in order to obtain work. A further potential loss to this municipality occurs in the tourist trade. The main attractions in this district at present are contained in the upper reaches of the Yarra and in the mountains above

Warburton. The possibility of the closing of some of our tourist roads and access to the snow country is causing the Council great concern because of the loss that will occur to the various tourist amenities such as cafes, guest houses and other related interests. Round Up EAST Warburton lost an old and respected resident with the death of Mrs. Minnetta Amelia Williams at the Royal Melbourne Hospital on December 19th at the age of 81 years. Mrs. Williams came to the Upper Yarra 56 years ago working at the O’Shannassy Quarters for some time. She leaves four sons, (one deceased) and a daughter. NEGLECT is very evident as far as maintenance repairs to the swing bridge over the Yarra at the eastern end of the War-

burton Recreation Reserve. The bridge is in an out of the way spot and apparently it has been forgotten but it must be remembered that a lot of people including children use the bridge daily. THE new Anglican vicar, Rev. K.E. Were and his fiancée were in Warburton on Monday to peruse the town and meet some of the people connected with the church. Mr. Wally Bell is expanding his business by opening up a secondhand furniture shop at Yarra Junction, next door to the Public Hall. The sale of secondhand cars and spare parts from wrecks in addition to motor mower repairs will be carried out at Mr. Bell’s new premises. - Contributed by Ellena Biggs

Shameful ‘war’ on refugees

AUSTRALIA DAY C E L E B R AT E Y O U R WAY Australia Day means something different to everyone, and it’s important you do what’s right for you. So on January 26, reflect on what you love about being Australian. australiaday.org.au #australiaday

IN RESPONSE to your request, I was going to write again about the current government’s failure to fulfil their electoral promise to bring reticulated gas to Warburton. However, this is a truly trivial matter compared to the way most of our federal politicians are handling the plight of refugees. It makes me much more anguished (and ashamed) to observe daily the way politicians speak about how the Immigration Department manages the ‘punishment’ of these innocent people who have committed no crime in seeking refuge in our ‘lucky country’. The great majority are inevitably acknowledged to be genuine refugees. They are mostly fleeing from countries where we have supported (or actively engaged in) wars that have totally destabilised and destroyed their countries. Worse, we now hear the current government putting the armed services in charge of the problem and declaring ‘war on people smugglers’. This is a clear furphy - in previous periods ‘people smugglers’ have been lauded as heroes of the Resistance and humanitarian saviours of thousands of people like the family of Anne Frank. We should open our eyes to the reality of the situation and acknowledge this mess as a huge self-serving political debacle with few honest players. Why on earth are we treating these refugees like criminals of the worst kind?

They are not now and never were ‘illegals’. They have every right under our law to seek refuge from persecution. When you come to think about it there could well be real ‘criminals’ of various kinds in parliament itself, but we are not sending them to Manus Island for untold years while we pretend to examine their cases. Leo Kennedy, Wesburn.

Reduce collisions

ALTHOUGH the news that Victoria recorded the lowest road toll since 1924 is welcome indeed, the fact remains that some 242 families and friends have been impacted and face the future without their loved ones. The majority of people do the right thing and drive responsibly which is commendable. However, in many instances innocent victims lost their lives due to the recklessness or poor choices made by others. The Graduated Licensing System and the Safer Road Infrastructure Program, initiated by the Victorian Government have undoubtedly helped save lives. However, we need to continue with the team effort of community road users, the police, emergency services and all arms of government. Victorian Coalition Government initiatives introduced in 2013, including increased penalties for using a mobile phone, toughened drink-driving sanctions and the start of education programs for reckless drivers, along with new road safety campaigns and public education programs, are aimed at bringing the road toll down further. Unfortunately, serious injury collisions are not reducing to the The Funeral Service for same extent. The release of the Enhanced Crash InMr Ronald James Hamono vestigation Study with the Monash University Accident Research will be held at Centre due in Februthe Lilydale Memorial Park Chapel ary, together with the release of the Parlia128 Victoria Rd, Lilydale mentary Road Safety (Mel Ref 280 D10) Committee Inquiry into serious injury later in the year will on WEDNESDAY give us a better understanding of what we (Jan. 22, 2014) can do to reduce life commencing at 11.15 a.m. changing injuries. I ask everyone in the community to consider the choices they Burial will follow make every time they get behind the wheel. within the Cemetery grounds. Hearts broken by break-in By JESSE GRAHAM A CALLOUS thief has been condemned for breaking the hearts of local store owners after a post-Christmas raid on a Yarra Glen shop. ACME etal in Bell Street, Yarra Glen, was burgled on Boxing Day night and a large number of gift items were stolen. Owners Morgan and James Calder said that a number of store items, including Bluetooth speakers, books and wallets were taken by the burglar, who they believe broke in through the back door. Ms Calder said that their shop had been run with the trust of the community, and that she hoped the person or people involved in the burglary didn’t live in the local area. “I think we make such a huge effort to make our space comfortable and trusting,” she said. “When that doesn’t happen, you feel a bit of disloyalty. “It really does break its (ACME’s) heart.” Ms Calder said that, as a result of the raid, the entries to the shop were being reinforced to help prevent another incident and that she was contemplating security cameras. She asked other residents and business owners in the area to be cautious of any suspicious behaviour, and even penned a letter to the unknown per-

THREE lyrebirds have been found dead in the Yarra Ranges National Park in the last few months. Each had been maimed and hurt so badly they were left to die. Yarra Ranges residents Kathryn Nauta, Bill Uhe, and Janet and David Wilson said they believed that the birds had been attacked by domestic cats which had been allowed to roam free in the park. “We’re not slamming cat owners, there are cat owners in neighbouring properties who fence their properties,” Ms Nauta said. “We’re just concerned that the cat curfew doesn’t protect these birds or other wildlife during the day.” Ms Nauta is a member of the Sherbrooke Lyrebird Study Group and said the lyrebird population in the park had grown from just 60 to more than 200 since the early 1990s. “There were a lot of attacks back then, so the Sherbrooke Council at the time decided to have a by-law that said anyone who lived near the national park needed to confine their pets 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” she said. “But it seems like those by-laws have changed and we’re worried three deaths could turn into more.” Mr Wilson said that he had personally seen a number of cats through his proper-

ty and said off-lead dogs through the park were another problem. “The dogs bark at the birds and scare them, but the cats are much more predatory,” Mr Wilson said. “There have been three attacks recently, we even buried one and it had a swollen foot with bite marks on it. “It’s well known that cat bites get infected easily.” All four agreed they had nothing against cat owners, but the reason they chose to live in Sherbrooke was to be close to the national park and all its beauty. “This is why we live here,” Ms Nauta said. “I often have lyrebirds walking through my property, drinking from the garden. “We love the area, the local wildlife - we don’t understand how someone can live here and not care about what their pets are doing to local birds. “We think that the local laws should be reinstated that cats and dogs in the area are confined to properties at all times. “We don’t want to see the population disappear again.” The Yarra Ranges Council is currently consulting with the community about its cat curfew and off-lead local laws. Those who want to have their say are asked to go to www.yarraranges.vic.gov. au/Council/Public_Notices_Consultation/ Have_Your_Say_-_Cats_Dogs.

Fireworks venue feels the heat By JESSE GRAHAM A BLAZE caused by fireworks at Balgownie Estate last weekend has drawn outrage from Yarra Glen residents for its poor timing, and a change in policy from the apologetic venue. A 40 square-metre fire erupted at Yarra Glen’s Balgownie Estate on Saturday 18 January at 9.15pm, after a suspected firework malfunction at a private function. Resident Paul Keedle, who lives 500 metres from

the venue, rushed to the scene with a 1000-litre tank on the back of his ute and worked to extinguish the fire. Yarra Glen, Coldstream and Dixons Creek CFAs all attended, with five trucks and 25 members on the scene, but had trouble accessing the property, according to Mr Keedle. He criticised Balgownie Estate’s Fire Risk Management Plan and said that, with the fifth anniversary of Black Saturday looming, people were still on edge when it

came to fires. Balgownie Estate general manager Gerald Ackroyd apologised on behalf of the venue, but insisted that all proper procedures had been followed before the malfunction, including consultation with CFA and notifying neighbours. He said the venue would implement new policies immediately, including a ban on fireworks during summer. For the full story, see tomorrow’s edition of the Mail.

Decades of dentistr y By JESSE GRAHAM

Dentist Stewart Gin (front right) with long time patients of 20 years, Adam and Pam Kroese (left and in the Picture: ROB CAREW dentist chair) and loyal staff Jodie Heenan (back left) and Sarah Rees (back right). 113097

A COMMUNITY stalwart with two decades of servicing the community (and its teeth) under his belt, has been praised and celebrated by Yarra Junction residents. Patients and staff members gathered at Yarra Junction Dental on Thursday 16 January to help celebrate Stewart Gin’s 20th anniversary of working in the community. Dr Gin first took up the reins at the dental clinic on 24 January 1994, at the age of 28, and said that he still remembers meeting some of his clients in his first days. Since then, Dr Gin has said that the last two decades have passed pretty quickly and that he feels he has a place in the community. “Some people, I’ve treated in excess of 15 years,” he said.

“The best part about it is, if I walk down the street, people will stop and talk to me - it’s a friendly atmosphere.” He said he was taken aback when his staff said they wanted to celebrate his 20th year in the community, and that, over the years, his staff have become his second family. Dr Gin said that he’s treated up to four generations in one family from the area. He said that a heartening aspect to his work is that, when some of his patients move out of the Yarra Valley, they still make the trip back to be treated by him. “It’s really been quite an interesting journey,” he said. “Hopefully, I’ll see the practice expand and see more generations treated.”

LEAVE AND LIVE. GRASSFIRES

CAN SURGE UP TO

KILOMETRES AN HOUR ON RISKY FIRE DAYS.

Grassires can be as dangerous as bushires. Know what to do. Listen to local radio and check for warnings.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO? visit emergency.vic.gov.au call 1800 240 667 download the FireReady app

Talk to family, friends or others in your community who might need help with leaving early.

Lend a helping hand DOES someone you know need help leaving early from a bushfire area? Fires can start and spread quickly wherever there is grass, scrub or bush – including on the edge of cities and towns. For anyone living in a highrisk bushfire or grassfire area, the safest option is to leave early on fire risk days. For those who are frail, have a physical disability, or have trouble thinking clearly or acting quickly in stressful situations, it is even more important to leave early on Severe, Extreme and Code Red days. Leaving home on fire risk days requires careful planning and commitment and takes time.

This fire season, think about any family members, friends or neighbours in your local community who might require your help to plan for and leave early on fire risk days. They will need longer to get organised, and might need practical assistance with transport to leave early. They might need help planning what to do with their pets, what to take with them (such as medications) and where to go that is comfortable and safe – using reliable transport. To help with planning, download a free copy of the Red Cross Bushfires – preparing to leave early plan from www.cfa. vic.gov.au/redcrossplan or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

How you can help: - Talk to family, friends or others in your community who might need help with leaving early. - Help them prepare their Red Cross Bushfires – preparing to leave early plan, available free from www.cfa.vic.gov.au/ redcrossplan or by calling the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667. - Make sure their plan includes what they will do if you are away and can’t help. Remember: leaving early well before a fire is always the safest option. Making last minute decisions can put lives at risk.

A regional partnership with the TAC and the Victorian Government.

Older drivers pay price DESPITE a sixth consecutive fall in the state road toll, tragically, 45 people aged 75-plus lost their lives on Victorian roads in 2013. This was up from 35 fatalities in 2012, a sad increase in a year which saw the lowest road toll for 90 years. Driver licensing policy in Victoria is based on fitness to drive - people can drive to any age as long as they are safe to do so. While older drivers are over-represented in serious injury and fatal crashes, this is mostly due to their frailty, reduced bone strength and fracture tolerance. The TAC, however, continues to review research into how road trauma among our ageing population can be reduced and is always monitoring this vital issue in Victoria, interstate and overseas. If you are an older driver, the TAC recommends to always check with your doctor or pharmacist about the impact of any medicine you may be taking on your ability to drive safely. Safe driving programs are available to seniors groups with aim to assist older Victorians maintain safe mobility, whether as a driver, pedestrian or public transport user. These include the RACV’s Years Ahead program (www.racv.com.au/olderdrivers) and the TAC-funded Community Mobility for Older People Program. We know that most older drivers are safe drivers and are very good at self-regulating their driving, which we encourage. This could involve deciding not to drive at night or at peak hour when driving is more difficult. As a family member, if you are concerned about an ageing relative’s ability to drive safely, it is best to review the information available on VicRoads’ website (www.vicroads.vic.gov.au). The TAC will never rest easy in striving for every Victorian’s journey to be a safe one. Clare Amies. TAC Acting CEO.

While the state saw the road toll drop last year, the Yarra Ranges had a rise in deaths in 2013.

Too many killed ROAD deaths plummeted across the state to record lows in the aftermath of 2013, but in the Yarra Ranges, more people died than in the year before. The Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) recorded the lowest road toll in 90 years across 2013, with Victoria’s total toll plummeting for six consecutive years. However, in the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area, eight people died in 2013 - up three from the five deaths

that occurred in 2012. Males continued to be the gender most-often killed on the roads, with five men dying on the roads last year, compared to three women. In 2012, four out of the five people who died on Yarra Ranges Roads were men, while almost twice the amount of men - 161, compared to 82 - died across the state in 2013. Not all who made up the local road toll in 2013 were behind the wheel -

one passenger and two pedestrians made up part of the statistics for those lost on the roads. However, 2012’s five deaths were all made up of drivers, with four behind the wheel and one behind the handlebars of a motorbike. Older drivers also made up more of the statistics in the year just past, with two people aged 70-or-older and two people aged from 50-59 years making up half of the amount

killed in the Yarra Ranges. The year beforehand, only one person in the 50-59 years age bracket was killed, with no-one killed in the 70-or-older demographic on local roads. For more information on the road toll and about road safety, visit www. tac.vic.gov.au. The Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol were contacted to comment on the local statistics, but were not available.

Dance and be a star FOR those who want to try dancing like they do on Dancing With the Stars then Dancesport Kingdom is the place to be. Students can learn how to tango, cha cha, salsa, quickstep, samba, jive and many, many more much loved dances in a fun and supportive environment at Dancesport Kingdom. Catering for all levels of dancers, Dancesport Kingdom in Lilydale has something for everyone who wants to learn the right moves on the dance floor. Current Professional Dancesport champion and Dancesport Kingdom principal Monica Fincham said beginners just need to have a spring in their step to enjoy the classes.

“A light-hearted attitude and a willingness to join in and learn while having fun is all that is needed,” she said. “The classes are held in a large studio and have a fun, social atmosphere. “You don’t need to bring a partner along and for more advanced students the classes get them ready to try Medal Dance Exams and even competitions.” Ballroom dancing, or Dancesport as it is now officially called, gained prominence in Australia in the early 1990s following the release of Baz Luhrmann’s hit movie Strictly Ballroom. Ms Fincham said it is now a popular pastime with young

and old alike through the variety of styles within ballroom and Latin categories that cater to a range of tastes and abilities. Socials and classes are held every Friday at 24 Main Street, Lilydale. Private lessons are held on other days by appointment with group classes for all ages and levels available. A ladies keep fit class is being run two mornings a week and the RAWR teenage social runs on a Monday from 6.30pm. For more information, call Monica at Dancesport Kingdom on 9739 6011, email info@dancesportkingdom.com. au or visit www.dancesportkingdom.com.au.

COMMUNITY services tutor from Upper Yarra Community College Tamara McCarthy is taking two graduates to Cambodia in conjunction with the college. The Upper Yarra Community House (UYCH) Community College philosophy is to work with students on their career pathway to give them every opportunity to meet their goals and this is just one of the ways they do this. The college offers a full range of certificate and diploma courses in community services and youth work. Ms McCarthy said education can lead to some amazing opportunities for young people. The trip came about after Ms McCarthy expressed interest to a friend from Melbourne University about doing aid work overseas in Cambodia. After being told the university could not help, Ms McCarthy decided to go it alone and raise the funds needed through community fundraisers and support from Koha Community Café. “The money raised was specifically for the Tabitha Foundation,” she said. “The Tabitha Foundation is the fundraising body for the construction of houses in Cambodia and the management of the families involved.” Ms McCarthy said what appealed to her most about the foundation was how it empowers families to take responsibility for their own needs. This is just one example of the dedication the UYCH Community College tutors have to education and experience. Ms McCarthy said good

Eagles on a high WITH brutally hot conditions during the week subsiding, comfortable conditions greeted the YVCA cricketers for an immensely important round of cricket for all teams. With the local council unable to mow the grounds, and a limited week on the training track, most found the going difficult with the bat, making for some interesting contests. Hosting Seville, Yarra Junction pulled off the surprise of the weekend with a thrilling and hard-fought, one-run victory. The Eagles entered the Christmas break as one of the in-form teams of the competition which saw them surging towards the top four. However, unrest over the break saw the departure of their captain David Lever, leaving most Yarra Valley followers with the opinion that the Eagles would slip from contention. Batting first, the home side found the going tough against the experience of Ishara Amerasinghe (3/24) and the speed of Matt Hadlum (4/32). This season has seen the transformation of some of the talented, but often inconsistent, young Eagles into genuine match winners. One such player is Cam Spaulding who, on the back of an exceptional unbeaten knock of 67, ensured the home side reached a defendable total of 7/139. Seville have not been in the greatest of form this season, but their experience, depth and skill have ensured that the Blues have found themselves towards the pointy end of the ladder. Most observers would have pencilled them in to chase down the target. At 3/64 after 25 overs, the visitors looked to be well on track with wickets in hand, and experience still to bat. A dogged 39 from the hard hitting Tim Dwyer had the chase well on track, but his dismissal left his team in a hole. But with the in-form Andy Kay (23) still at the wicket, the favourites still had their noses in front. Like Spaulding, Quentin Hodgkinson has emerged as a match winner this season and this was again the case as his figures of 5/18 saw the Eagles to victory in a gripping contest. With Seville (9/138) finishing one run short, Yarra Junction ensured they would continue to strive for finals action. The match of the round was at Mount Evelyn where the Rovers hosted Coldstream in a top-four clash. The home side won the toss, and duly elected to bat in excellent, although slow, batting conditions. In an even contest between bat and ball, both teams had their chances to press their advantage on the contest. An excellent partnership between Daniel Fraser (31) and Gareth Fraser ensured a platform was set for the Rovers, and as is the case on most occasions, captain Kane Jones (67) made sure it was not a missed opportunity. His brutal batting, with the help of crafty knocks from Luke Jones (33) and Troy Hancock led the Rovers to an imposing total of 7/201. Jarrod Bayliss was the pick of the bowlers, standing up in the final overs to record tidy figures of 3/24 and keeping the Crocs in the contest. Mount Evelyn has been a venue that

has seen batsmen prosper with short boundaries and a quick outfield. Despite being on the slow side, the Crocs fancied themselves to chase the total if they could make a positive start. Brilliant stroke maker Danny Adams (80) with strong contributions from Bailey Fritsch and Matt Johnson (42) had the Crocs immediately on the front foot. This leaves the Rovers bereft of answers to the onslaught. At 1/130 in the 27th over, it looked a matter of when, not if, a Coldstream victory would be secured. With the unfortunate run out of Adams, in sight of a much-deserved century, the door was left slightly ajar for the home side. The experience of Kane Jones (3/43) and Chris Anderson (2/21) leading from the front, the home side systematically turned the screws on the Crocs and with the run rate required slowly creeping up. The visitors were unable to click up a gear, and with a flurry of wickets falling while chasing the score, the Crocs eventually found their chase 24 runs short at 8/177. Healesville hosted Warburton-Millgrove in a key clash for both teams with top-of-the-table Healesville opening the door to their challengers suffering a loss to Coldstream last week. While a win for Warburton-Millgrove would at the very least keep them within arm’s reach of the top four. The visitors opened the game with the bat and battled to make a score of significance. The experienced pairing of Mick Walker (43) and Tim McKail (25) looked to have the Burras on track to a decent score, however neither could capitalise on their starts - that was the overall story for the team’s innings. Despite contributions throughout their batting line up, the visitors could not muster enough momentum to really put the consistent Bloods attack to the sword. With spinner Scott Hamer (3/36) and the evergreen Brad Chandler (2/24) leading the attack, Healesville were able to restrict Warburton-Millgrove to 7/136. With the early fall of in-form openers Geoff Stock and John Heywood, the Burras made the best start possible in their defence. Healesville have had a great season thus far, built on even contributions with both bat and ball from their entire lineup, so despite the early set back, the Bloods held their nerve. Scott Hamer (58) led from the front and with the experienced Brian Horner (28) chipping in, the Bloods were never really challenged despite the chase succeeding with only four overs remaining. The Burra’s bowlers did their best to keep their team in the contest, but a total of 136 was always going to be short of the mark, with the Bloods passing the mark with five wickets in hand. In the final game of the round, Woori Yallock hosted Hoddles Creek in a mustwin game for the home side if they had any aspirations of featuring in the finals. Hoddles Creek opened up the contest with the bat, and after last week’s poor start with the bat against Mount Evelyn, the Wombats were keen to show more discipline and hard edge to their batting. The home side gave them no easy

runs as opening bowlers Jackson Wright (3/22) and Danny Ryan (2/18) kept things tight against some dogged resistance from Luke Hethrington (20) and Brenton Derix (28). Unfortunately, the visitors did not have the ability to up the ante when the whips were cracking, and despite their valiant batting, a final score of 6/103 looked a little thin. A little thin it proved to be as the talented top order of the Tigers made short work of the chase despite the early wickets of in-form openers Dan Mock and Dan Reid. Woori Yallock true bloods Ryan Smith (51) and Cal Ferguson (38) ensured there would be no wobbles in this chase as they led their team to a comfortable six-wicket victory. DJ Strachan Shield: Healesville 5/140 (Hamer 58, Horner 28, Clinch 2/10, Loughnan 1/17) d Warburton-Millgrove 7/136 (Walker 43, McKail 25, Hamer 3/36, Chandler 2/24). Blind cricketer Daniel Pritchard.

The love of the game OVER the past few months, Tecoma’s blind cricketer Daniel Pritchard says he’s lost confidence in moving around town thanks to the degeneration of what is left of his limited sight. But nothing stops this 19-yearold from doing what he loves most - playing cricket. Pritchard has recently returned victorious from the 32nd Biannual National Blind Cricket Championships which were played in Adelaide from 29 December to 7 January. Pritchard, along with 13 other blind and vision impaired athletes from around Victoria made up the squad that competed against South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT in single round robin 40/40 and T20 competitions. It was Pritchard’s second National Championships after first competing in Brisbane in 2010/11. The Brisbane Championships marked eight years of straight wins for Victoria as well as the inauguration of the T20 series. “Adelaide was never going to be an easy competition for us,” Pritchard said. “We lost one of our openers and our strike bowler to Queensland while our other opener retired from the game.” Queensland defeated Victoria in the final of the 40 over competition by 30 runs after the match was reduced to a Twenty/20 due to rain. “It wasn’t a great feeling for us losing to Queensland particularly with the T20 competition still to go. “Their batting attack was very top heavy and suited the shorter format,” he said. For the first time in 10 years, Victoria was rated as the underdog going into a final. Once again, Queensland was the opposition for the T20 showdown. As expected, Queensland started

strong in its chase but lost its top four early on. By the 10th over, Queensland was only in the low 80s. It was eventually bowled out in the 19th over ironically 30 runs short of its target. The tournament also doubled as a selection camp to determine who would represent Australia in its upcoming tour of Sri Lanka and India later this year. “I was part of the side that took home the Ashes in 2012 as well as the squad that went to the world cup of the same year so I hope to also make this next series.” Blind cricketers in Australia are not financially supported and must self-fund in order to represent their country at international events. This differs from other countries that financially support their blind cricketers. “This particular tour looks like it will cost approximately $3000. “If I am unable to find the funds, I will have to withdraw from the tour altogether.” Pritchard was born with a degenerative eye condition which has claimed all sight in his left eye as well as a majority of sight in his right eye. “Over the past few months, I’ve lost a lot of clarity which has affected my confidence in moving around independently particularly around town with the added noise and confusion of blocked footpaths and construction machinery which I had to walk past on a daily basis in order to travel to school.” Cataract surgery has been scheduled for Daniel later this month to assist in restoring his clarity. “The difference has really impacted on the way I play cricket.” For more information about blind cricket in Victoria, visit the Victorian Blind Cricket Association’s website at www.vbca.org.au
