Million dollar babies TEN homes in Brimbank have sold for the premium price of $1 million – or higher – in 12 months. Figures from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) reveal a Keilor home received the highestrecorded house price for Brimbank during 2013. The three-bedroom residence in Arundel Rd fetched $1.35 million during December in a private sale. In addition, a four-bedroom house on Borrell St, Keilor East sold for $1.27 million during August. Another of the area’s most expensive homes was in Thomson St, Sunshine, where a property sold for $1.42 million in February. The average house price for the suburb is $445,000, which is the same in Caroline Springs across the border within the municipality of Melton. Concidentally, a Caroline Springs abode has been crowned Melton’s most expensive home for 2013. The area’s most expensive house, in Lauriston Quay, sold for $980,000 in April. The four-bedroom, two-bath-

room lakeside home included a formal lounge, theatre room, a kitchen with three types of ovens and a butler’s pantry. In contrast, the most affordable home in the municipality – in Hume Ave, Melton South – sold for just $180,000. Even more of a bargain was Brimbank’s cheapest home in Hall St, Sunshine West, which fetched $121,002. Overall there were more than 2480 house, flat and unit sales in Brimbank during 2013. In Melton more than 1070 homes were sold. The REIV’s Enzo Raimondo predicated the Melbourne property market would see a moderate price growth over 2014. “The outlook for 2014 remains positive with price and sales growth expected to continue although at a more moderate pace than what we have seen in the past few months,” he said. “The performance of the housing market next year would also be dependent on broader macroeconomic factors, in particular the unemployment rate and changes in consumer sentiment which could place some downward pressure on price growth in 2014.”

By ALESHA CAPONE THE number of homeless youth is soaring in Melbourne’s West and North-Western Suburbs, according to several advocates in the region. They have called for more action to address issues which can lead to homelessness including high rates of youth unemployment, mental health, drugs and alcohol, school suspensions and relationship breakdowns. This comes in the wake of a report from the Council to Homeless Persons, which asks that the State Government spend $143 million across a decade to provide more housing and support. More than 18,000 young people from across the West seek assistance from Youth Junction Inc, based in Sunshine, every year. General manager Karen Hart said there was a “huge demand and growing” for homeless services, partly due to a lack of affordable private rental homes and social housing in the West. Chair of the not-for-profit Youth Projects group, Melanie Raymond, said estimates showed more than 40 per cent of clients lived in short-term “insecure accommodation” which often leads to homelessness. “While inner Melbourne has the highest rates of street homelessness, Melbourne’s outer North and West are seeing a rise in homelessness over the past few years,” Ms Raymond said. “We have heard of clients sleeping in cars, caravans, old warehouses and on the streets in this area.”

By YASEMIN TALAT THIS week will mark the oneyear anniversary of Protective Services Officers at Watergardens Train Station. Since the deployment of PSOs at Watergardens Station and across most stations on the Sunbury Line there has been significant drop in anti-social behaviours. “We are really happy with the Protective Services Officers at Watergardens station,” said Acting Inspector Pat Allen from Victoria Police. “Since their deployment a year ago, we have seen a reduction in anti-social behaviour and many members of the public have made it a point to let us know that they now feel safer at
the station.” PSOs Dario Dinapoli and Ron Jones, who both embraced the role as PSO 12 months ago, said the drop in anti-social behaviour also influenced an increase in community safety and confidence in PSOs. “I’ve seen a great change in behaviour,” Mr Jones said. “Young kids causing trouble around the station has dropped off,” he said. “It still happens but very, very little.” “And you see a lot more people on the trains now because of that too,” he said. Mr Dinapoli said the PSOs had been welcomed by the community and acknowledged for their contribution to the in-
creased safety at the train stations across the west. He said that commuters were thankful for the PSOs presence. “People like us being there,” Mr Dinapoli said. “And they know we’re there to help them.” “They know that we are there on every line and we continue to build rapport with the locals,” he said. According to Victoria Police data, from the PSOs first shift on 22 January 2013 to 30 June 2013, a total of 52 infringement notices were handed out at Watergardens Station. Offences included drunk in public place, possessing an open container of alcohol, and smoking in restricted areas.

School start delay By XAVIER SMERDON WESTERN Suburbs residents will have to wait a bit longer for a much-needed school after “time constraints” caused the opening of a primary school on the old Mowbray College Caroline Springs campus to be delayed by up to two years. Wyndham Councillor Intaj Khan bought the campus for $6 million after it was closed down due to massive debts. Star revealed last year that he was planning on opening a primary school on the site under the name of West Melbourne Grammar School. But his plans hit a snag when he was taken to court by Westbourne Grammar School because his cho-
sen name was too similar to theirs. Mr Khan said the school would now be called West Lakes Grammar School. And while it was hoped the school would open this year, Mr Khan said a submission to the Victorian Registrations and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) could not be completed on time and he was now looking at a 2015 opening. “A number of things delayed the opening,” Mr Khan said. “For one, we were proposing a primary school but the campus was suited for a secondary school, so we had to work around that.” Mr Khan said he had already received 80 expressions of interest from parents and he was confident
Intaj Khan in front of the old Mowbray College. 101670 Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI the school would be ready to accept students next year. “We’ve done a feasibility study
and we know that we need 220 students minimum in the first year to make it viable,” he said. “We’ve already received 80 expressions of interest even though we haven’t advertised anything. “We’ve replied back to those parents and apologised and explained that we won’t be able to open this year.” Mr Khan said the community was obviously crying out for a new school in the area. “We’ve had a few hurdles recently and now I think we’re on track,” he said. “It’s disappointing that we won’t open this year but it is also disappointing that the parents have to go through this.”
A CARING Cairnlea resident has been named as the worthy recipient of the Brimbank Citizen of the Year. On Monday, Brimbank City Council announced the winners of the 2014 Brimbank Australia Day Awards at Overnewton Castle in Keilor. Brigitte Baker has received the municipality’s top accolade after spending decades acting as a foster mother to children including those who have experienced grief and trauma. With the assistance of her husband Robert, Mrs Baker has fostered more than 600 youngsters. A council statement written in Mrs Baker’s honour said she had devoted the past 27 years to foster parenting. “Although children may bring with them a range of behaviours as a result of their experience, she remains loving, caring, kind and respectful to all children that she works with,” the document said. The council program also described Mrs Baker as “a highly valued member” of the University Park Primary School in St Albans, where she serves as president of the Parents and Friends Association. Mrs Baker’s fellow award winner, Keilor teenager Edward Buijs, received the Young Citizen of the Year gong. Edward is a volunteer and has travelled to Papua New Guinea to participate in a humanitarian aid program. Brimbank’s Environmental Achievement Award went to Kara Humphrey and Asha Bannon for The Sugar Glider Project. Based at the Organ Pipes National Park, the pair research and monitor Sugar Glider numbers, health and habits.
POLICE have appealed for public help to solve a savage road rage incident which occurred on the Western Ring Rd in Sunshine West on 28 November last year. It is believed the victim was cut off by a small dark grey Hyundai Excel hatchback while driving between Ballarat and Boundary roads, about 12.30pm. The two cars stopped in the far left emergency lane and the victim was punched in the face by the driver of the Excel. He was further attacked after falling to the ground and left unconscious. Hospital perfomance hurts in report By ALESHA CAPONE WESTERN Health has assured patients it will monitor performance levels after Sunshine Hospital failed to meet a number of targets set out by the State Government. Western Health’s executive director of operations, Russell Harrison, said the increasing number of people presenting at the emergency department has risen almost 10 per cent in 12 months. “This increased demand led to a decrease in performance for the quarter and we are monitoring this closely,” Mr Harrison said. Mr Harrison said Williamstown Hospital’s operating theatres have also been unavailable due to a construction project, which has significantly impacted upon Sunshine Hospital’s results in the latest Victorian Health Services Performance (VHSP) report.

Lewinsky’s job done By ALESHA CAPONE LONG-SERVING Brimbank administrator Peter Lewinsky has said he believes the community’s faith in the council has been restored, as he steps down for a new position. Last week, Brimbank City Council announced Mr Lewinsky would take up a role as monitor at Darebin City Council effective from 30 January, in the wake of an Ombudsman’s investigation.
Mr Lewinsky was originally appointed as chairman of the Brimbank administrators during 2009, to fill in for elected councillors who were sacked by the State Government after an Ombudsman’s investigation into alleged corruption. When the State Government extended the administrator’s term for another three years at the last council elections, Mr Lewinsky stayed on. Mr Lewinsky said after serv-
ing in Brimbank for more than four years, he had seen residents increase their trust in the council. “I believe we have achieved a very good level of community confidence in the council and the administrators,” he said. “A lot of the hostile community groups around Brimbank have quietened down. “We got Brimbank off the front page.”
Mr Lewinsky said he is proud of many projects the administrators have implemented or overseen in Brimbank, like works to improve parks and the urban renewal program in Sunshine’s CBD. Mr Lewinsky said he and the two original administrators he served alongside, Meredith Sussex and Joanne Anderson, saw Brimbank was “under resourced” when first appointed.
Rail works ramped up THE new pedestrian concourse over Sunshine Railway Station has been opened as part of the $4.8 billion Regional Rail Link project. The RRL’s Footscray - Deer Park Alliance general manager Brad Jackson said the new concourse was a key stage of the project. “I am delighted the new station concourse is open, providing safer and more spacious access across the rail corridor for the Sunshine community,” Mr Jackson said. “The new concourse is well lit and fully accessible through stairs, lifts and ramps. It is a huge improvement on the old station underpass, which is now closed. “There is still more to do at Sunshine railway station and completing the concourse now allows us to continue this work. “I am excited to have reached this important milestone, which will benefit everyone travelling through the station and make it more welcoming place to be.” Perforated screens have been incorporated into the concourse, depicting the indigenous plant life of the area including the Sunshine Diuris orchid.

HOMICIDE Squad detectives have appealed for anyone with information about the death of a St Albans man on Saturday 11 May last year to come forward. The body of Hieu Nguyen, 18, was located on a nature strip out the front of Sunshine Hospital in Majorca St, St Albans at around 5.30am. Detectives believe a burnt-out car discovered in Plumpton later during the morning could have possibly been involved with Mr Nguyen’s death. A light blue coloured Honda Civic sedan was located on a rural property in Leakes Rd around 9am. A witness has told police they saw a vehicle matching the description being “driven erratically” by a man with dark-coloured hair along the Melton Highway, near the intersection of Kings Rd, in Taylors Lakes around 8am that morning. Homicide Squad Detective Inspector John Potter has appealed for anyone who saw the vehicle to contact police. “It’s important for us and for Mr Nguyen’s family, to find out what happened to him that day,” Det Insp Potter said. “If we can piece together the movements of that vehicle between 5am and 9am and identify who was driving it, we may be one step closer to doing that. “I’m also appealing for anyone that may have noticed the car in the vicinity of Majorca St in St Albans around 5.30am to come forward.” Detectives have released photos of the car that was located burnt out in Plumpton, in the hope that someone will remember seeing it and contact them. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Ringmaster rolls up By ALESHA CAPONE DEER Park resident Cameron Tougher always dreamed of a career on stage but never thought he would join the circus. However the 24-year-old ringmaster has been recruited to present a spectacular show in front of up to 400 people every night, under the lights at Circus Latino. The circus will be playing in Werribee until 27 January. Before he became ringmaster, Mr Tougher was volunteering in community theatre and working two jobs including one at the 234 Fun Galore indoor entertainment centre in Braybrook. Around two months ago, Circus Latino performers visited the centre and started chatting to Mr Tougher, who told them about his favourite past-times - in-
cluding fire-twirling, clowning and announcing. The performers invited Mr Tougher see to their show in Burnside, where their tricks and stunts left him “in awe”. He was later invited backstage and asked to audition his announcing skills in front of the circus owner another day. “He asked me if I wanted to do a show and I was expecting to be the next day or evening,” Mr Tougher said. “Then I found out I was going to be live on stage in the next half an hour.” Mr Tougher ended up doing shows across that weekend, announcing acts from backstage. One night, circus members urged him to go out on stage - despite some pre-performance nerves. “I ran offstage and they said, ‘How was it?’” Mr Tougher recalls.
“I said I want to do it again.” Since then, he has been the official Circus Latino ringmaster . “I’ve kind-of literally run away with the circus,” Mr Tougher said. “To be honest with you, my favourite part is the rush of being on stage in front of a crowd and making sure everything’s running right and on time.” His advice for aspiring circus performers is to follow their dreams and ignore the naysayers. “I followed my dream of being onstage and now look where I am,” he said. “I’m in the circus and absolutely loving it.” Circus Latino will be at Werribee Plaza in the Heaths Rd car park on Wednesday and Thursday at 7.30pm, Friday and Saturday at 7.30 pm and 11am and Sunday and Monday 11am. SEVERAL Brimbank hoons have been caught out breaking the road rules recently, including a P-plate driver from Delahey. The 21-year-old had his vehicle impounded for 30 days after police allegedly detected him speeding in Sunshine West last Tuesday. Brimbank Highway Patrol members allegedly captured the car travelling at 176km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Western Ring Rd. In a nearby municipality, Hobsons Bay Highway Patrol witnessed two motorcyclists allegedly disobeying the law in Grieve Parade, Altona North. Although a bright yellow police vehicle was parked behind the motorcyclists when they began racing, the riders allegedly reached speeds of above 140km/h in a 70km/h zone. A 40-year-old man from Airport West and a 35-year-old man from Keilor East were intercepted and both lost their motorcycles under the Victorian hoon legislation for 30 days. The riders will have to pay over $740 to have their vehicles released and face court at a later date.

Dancing with singing star By ALESHA CAPONE A CAROLINE Springs resident will perform with singer Sarah De Bono during her upcoming shows in South Australia and Queensland. Jason Di Cicco is the founder and director of JDC Performing Arts Studios, which has studios in his home suburb and Werribee. The 26-year-old was acquainted with Sarah, who grew up in Sunshine, before she found fame on the first season of ’The Voice’. Sarah was a vocal coach at JDC before she hit the big-time on television. Although Mr Di Cicco knew Sarah before she became a household name, he said he was surprised to receive a call asking him
to choreograph and cast dancers in her latest shows. “I thought it was fantastic, I said yes and I was booked on the spot,” Mr Di Cicco said. In October last year, he held an open-call audition in Werribee which was attended by just under 100 dancers. Mr Di Cicco selected five to perform in Ms De Bono’s tour. “It’s going to be a very commercial and upbeat show,” he said. “Sarah and her manager are easy to work with, the dancers are great and quick learners and pick up choreography straight away.” On Australia Day, he and the other dancers will perform at the Adelaide Festival Centre.
During March, they will fly to Brisbane for a show where Ms De Bono headlines the bill alongside the Potbellez and Boy George. Mr Di Cicco said he had devoted his life to dancing since his first jazz class at the age of 10. “From the first class I knew I wanted to be a dancer, choreographer and have my own performing arts studio,” he said. He hopes to introduce others to the magic of dance with a week of free open classes at JDC studios from 3 to 8 February, for two years olds to adults. The studios are located at 2/3 Loop Rd, Werribee and Factory 9, 1037-1043 Western Sinasi Alak, Sarah Hardy, Jason Di Cicco and Alexandra Highway, Ravenhall. See www.jdcstudios. Ta for bringing joy of music STAY COOL THIS SUMMER Servi Evapoce Your Cool rative er Fr om $
By ALESHA CAPONE A TALENTED father-anddaughter duo are bringing the joy of music to Kealba. Music therapist, instructor and producer Neil Ta leads the Kealba School of Music. His daughter Vivian is a singer and keyboardist who also plays the recorder, guitar and harmonica. The eight-year-old has performed for dignitaries, politicians, multicultural festivals and at Federation Square. On 2 February, she will sing the national anthem at the Lunar New Year Festival in Footscray. “What I enjoy about concerts is that I build more confidence and I get to have more friends,” Vivian said. “The best advice my Dad has given me is to never give up and always keep trying. “He’s a really nice teacher.” Mr Ta taught himself the recorder and learned harmonica from his father, as a young boy growing up in Italy. He recalls watching an orchestral marching band from a room above the stable where his “very poor” family lived. The band’s conductor invited Mr Ta to attend rehearsals and taught him to read music. “He gave me my first clarinet, which I learned very quickly. I was like, ‘wow’,” Mr Ta said. “Now I play more than 40 instruments.” Mr Ta came to Australia during the 1980s, where he studied music at university and went on to become a music therapist for the Department of Justice.

Nowadays at the Kealba School of Music, Mr Ta said in addition to musical ability, his classes aimed to increase children’s intelligence, adaptability and confidence. He is also keen to share his love for music with older students and will offer adult uku-
lele classes in Brimbank from mid-January. Mr Ta said many older people want to learn an instrument but have never been given the chance. “The first thing you see is their eyes, they shine when they get a chance to achieve their dream,” he said. The classes cost $10, see www.kealbaschoolofmusic. com for more details.

AUSTRALIA DAY C E L E B R AT E Y O U R WAY
By ALESHA CAPONE SANDRA Allan likes the way art can show the beauty in all things. As an artist, photographer and teacher, Ms Allan said much of her inspiration came from the natural world. “I get a lot of inspiration from mainly Brimbank Park and also places around Keilor,” she said. Some of Ms Allan’s photos have been on display at Brimbank City Council’s Keilor municipal office since last year, to celebrate the area’s 150th anniversary of local government. One of the images captures a large rock edifice in Keilor, bathed in blue and red light at different times of day. “I’m sure so many people have been through the park past the rocks but never really noticed them,” Ms Allan said. Ms Allan said in addition to art, she was fascinated by the area’s history including the discovery of the

‘Keilor Skull’ in 1940. Radiocarbon has dated the skull to 13,000 BP and later excavations at Keilor Terrace have uncovered extinct megafauna and stone tools. “I like to enforce the idea that photography is a really important tool to document the history of time,” Ms Allan said. Ms Allan said she hade tried many types of art including painting and sculpture, but her present passion is photography. “For the last five years, I’ve been clicking away in landscapes and random places which look interesting to me,” she said. As an art teacher at Kurunjang Secondary College in Melton and a founding member of the Western Region Arts Network, Ms Allan said she hoped her images captured Keilor’s past for future residents to appreciate. “I wanted to present that because it’s really important for newcomers,” she said.

Ensure it’s safe to sizzle BEFORE firing up the family gas barbecue this Australia Day, home owners should take a few moments to make sure it is safe and ready to use. Gas Safety Australia’s national manager Barry Ward says minor incidents involving gas barbecues happen more and more often which could be easily avoided with a few simple safety measures. “We do hear of a lot of minor
incidents causing house fires.” Gas Safe Australia is one of the leading authorities on home safety for domestic properties in Australia. “It is vital to regularly check all the connections and taps on the barbecue for leaks due to the possibility of corrosion with it being an outdoor appliance. “It is also possible the burners and injectors can become
blocked causing explosive ignition,” Mr Ward said. “Any smell of gas should be treated seriously and should be reported to your utility company if it is around your meter area. “Any other smells of gas, you should ask a licensed gas fitter who can work on gas appliances to make sure there is no leak from the pipework or the appliances.”
People using bottle gas in caravans and mobile homes, as well as residential properties, should be particularly careful, he says. LPG sinks to the ground and is difficult to detect though smell and can be very explosive. Energy Safe Victoria advises summer sizzlers that if they haven’t used their barbecue recently to check the gas cylinder because a gas cylinder must not
be refilled if it has not been tested for more than 10 years or if the cylinder has been damaged. People can exchange LP gas cylinders at a reputable supplier to avoid this problem. Check the hose to make sure it has not perished and also check connections to make sure that they are tight. People can check the hose and regulator connections by
spraying them with a soapy water solution. Bubbles will form if gas is escaping. If in doubt, turn off the gas and contact a licensed gasfitter. For further information, call 1300 955 759 or visit www.gassafeaustralia.com.au. Visit www.australiaday.org. au for more information.

Sociable salsa for one and all stinctive way to communicate with body language. Dancing is actually a way to express feelings, emotions, personality, thoughts and is consequently a very direct instrument to develop new friendships. If the group is harmonic, it often happens that people decide to go out together to a salsa event or other places other than the regular classes. Come along, make new friends and see new places! Salsa is a great form of exercise. Salsa dancing is a unique form of exercise because it provides the heart-healthy benefits of an aerobic exercise while also allowing participants to engage in a social activity. Among its benefits, salsa builds endurance and stamina, helps with weight loss and on average burning off 420 or more calories per hour. Dancing can burn more calories an hour than riding a bike or swimming. It also relieves stress, helps release toxins and greatly increase overall fitness and general wellbeing.
Salsa has many health benefits as well as being a wonderful skill.

THOSE would-be dancers who have two left feet, have no rhythm and would rather be a wall flower should consider salsa. Salsa dancing is completely inclusive and is suitable for anyone regardless of age, or level of ability. There is also a fantastic range of benefits gained from this dance. Music and dance have been a part of many different cultures for centuries. It has always been a part of celebration, ritual, exercise, communication and pleasure and whether they knew it or not way back when the dancing began, the health benefits were, and still are enormous. There are also benefits from a social perspective. Latin dance is a great way to develop new social relationships. FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? DB: If there’s fire involved I’m O.K! You can’t go wrong with a wood-fired pizza or a barbecue. FB: What is your signature dish? DB: I don’t know about signature dish, but I like cooking up marinated ribs on the Weber or firing up the spit-roaster with a pig or lamb. I also smoke trout that I grow at home in my Aquaponics system and I make a pretty good stinging nettle pesto!
“Ice c What ream is exq a pity it isn’t uisite. illegal” – (Frenc Voltaire h philo sophe r)
FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? DB: Hmm, it would have to be something with mud crabs – maybe some kind of mud crab pasta sauce, or crayfish. It’s pretty hard to beat mud crabs. FB: What is your favourite drink? DB: Heineken, followed closely by Grolsch, Stella, Carlsberg and Becks. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? DB: James Hetfield, Kirk Hammet (Metallica frontman and lead guitarist) and three of my mates. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? DB: Get out of the kitchen and cook outside on a fire like a caveman!

Hope you had lovely, indulgent Christmas Day. While the celebrations might only last a day, Christmas leftovers certainly make sure the festive spirit lives on … and on. They’re the gift that keeps on giving! On Christmas Day in our house, we barely seemed to make a dent on the leg of ham we had in our fridge (which happened to be the size of Brazil), so I had to get creative. I chopped up thick slices to make special fried rice, which my eight year old son adores. Our other solution was to buy lovely loaves of sourdough bread and Swiss cheese slices from the supermarket deli and have ham and Swiss cheese toasties. But others were much more creative than me. My friend Kylea (who married into a big Italian family) says “I made aranchini balls with cut up leftover ham, fried up so it tasted like smoked bacon.” Ann Marie used her leftover turkey to make turkey noodle soup with
somen noodles, soy sauce, fresh ginger, lemongrass and baby spinach: “Kids love this and it only takes seven minutes to make.” Emily’s Turkey Bake involved slapping turkey, stuffing and leftover vegies into a baking dish, topping it with gravy and crisping it up in the oven. Simon whipped up a mean ham and roast vegie frittata. While Carlie says “My great aunt made turkey pie the next day, and put the leftover roast vegies into a pureed soup plus a minestrone. And there was STILL food!” I’d love to hear what creative things you did with your Christmas leftovers. It might give us all a head start on this year’s Christmas celebrations! Email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au I’m also keen to know what kitchen gadgets Santa left in your stocking – my husband is now the proud owner of a nifty little device called the Slap Chop. You just put a few vegies under it, slap the top down a couple of times and voila – instant salad!

Cream of the crop By LIAM TWOMEY OUTSTANDING athletes from Melbourne’s Western Suburbs have contributed to making the 2012/13 Don Deeble Rising Star Award one of the most impressive in its history. With nominations for the cycle beginning in June 2012, the Don Deeble Rising Star Award has been presented to 16 athletes from all corners of the West who have achieved outstanding results at a state or national level. From the 16 nominees, a total of 13 sports were also represented including volleyball, cricket, hockey, netball and football. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and is sponsored by the Yarraville Club
Cricket Club. Each month, one nominee receives $1000 towards achieving their sporting goals while at the award’s grand final, the overall winner is given $5000. On top of that, this year will see three runners-up each receive $2000. After hours of deliberation by award organisers, the finalists for the award are Aaron Wain (taekwondo), Dejan Vasiljevic (basketball), Morgan Mitchell (athletics) and Nathan Pellissier (table tennis). All four young athletes have not only reached an incredibly high level of results at a state level but have also progressed to national and international competition. Sunshine Western Region Sports Club vice-resident Barry Watson
was rapt with the calibre of nominees. “The standard this year has been very high and very even,” Watson said. “We have a hard job in deciding the placegetters with this year’s lot having more depth to their talents.” The overall winner will be announced on Wednesday 29 January. Also on the night, former AFL player and coach David Parkin will be the guest speaker for the event. Previous winners of the Don Deeble Rising Star Award have included rising Australian basketball stars Rachel Jarry and Dante Exum, national women’s hockey member Danielle Schubach and cycling star Kendelle Hodges while current Australian Women’s Ashes representative Jess Cameron and AFL
footballer Bachar Houli were also monthly nominees. With the 2012/13 Don Deeble Rising Star Award cycle drawing to a close, organisers are now on the lookout for more young talent to nominate this year. “We certainly encourage all athletes, coaches and parents to email their respective son’s, daughter’s, friend’s or kid’s achievements (age bracket 13-20),” Watson said. “There are a number of ways, even if not nominated for a monthly award, that they can be helped. “Any athlete travelling and having to pay costs can be supported by our club.” To nominate a junior athlete for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award, contact starsport@starnewsgroup. com.au or call 9933 4800.

Hard luck Blues By ADEM SARICAOGLU
Doghouse KEVIN HILLIER
KEILOR’S final Turf Cricket one-dayer for the summer did not quite go to plan on Saturday, going down to Yarraville Club at Robert Bruce Reserve. The Blues had first use of the wicket after winning the toss and were ultimately punished for a poor start in the middle, only managing to post 122 before the visiting Clubbers chased it down with ease, scoring 8/177 in reply. Keilor openers Warren Kelly and Kristian Dixon both went cheaply at the top of the order - falling victim to Yarraville Club captain-coach Emmett Bronca for a duck and three respectively. With Hans Fernando and Mubasher Hassan at the crease, the Blues then recovered to reach 2/35 before Bronca struck again for his third and final wicket - Hassan caught behind for 13. Shaun Guerra then added 33 with Fernando before Adam Contessa trapped him on the pads for 22 and soon after Lachlan Sneddon was run out for four. From there the host struggled as Fernando was left to fend for himself, watching another two batting partners fall at the other end before he too was run out by Mark Williams for 47. With Andrew Cullen in to clean up the tail, Keilor’s innings was halted with 28 balls to come. Yarraville Club then made much better use of the wicket during its chase, getting on top of a number of Keilor bowlers. Sneddon was the lone stand-out with the ball for the Blues, claiming rather erratic figures of 5/37 from just four overs. Dixon (1/14), Kelly (1/14) and Roshan Laksiri (1/41) snared the remaining three wickets for Keilor on the day. The result leaves the Blues perched on the bottom of the Senior Division table with three two-dayers to come for the remainder of the summer - beginning with this weekend’s away clash at 10th-placed Strathmore’s Syd McGain Oval. Meanwhile in the VTCA’s North Division on Saturday, Keilor Park was a seven-run winner over Altona North at Ray Davies Reserve.
Playing with a passion A GREAT man once said: “A week is a long time in football” and he was right. Last week I wrote that Deer Park premiership player Shannon Broadbent had been the subject of social media in regards to his exclusion from the WRFL Interleague squad. He was originally left out as the selectors thought he was not playing in the WRFL in 2014. He was contacted and assured the selectors he was definitely playing at Deer Park so they included him in the squad as you would expect of the 2013 Barry Priest Medallist. Last week Shannon signed to play with Tatura for the 2014 season. The newspaper reports that I read were very strong that money was a big factor in the decision. I have no issue with Shannon getting well paid for what he brings to a club, good on him. If clubs want to go down that track, that is their choice. My concern, as it has been for many years, is the culture and expectation we are showing the young players coming through. If it is all about money then grassroots footy is doomed. I don’t back away from that and if you think differently please let me know your thoughts. I look at my eight-year-old son who wants to play footy, he does not know about it as an occupation, he just loves the game. It would be very sad if we lost that. Let me know what you think. THE Yarraville Club Cricket Club has its past players and members day coming up on Saturday 8 February when the first XI take on Bentleigh. They will have many special offers on the day but basically it is a great opportunity for past players to come back and relive old times and have a good time at the club. One person who might be confused is ‘John Farnham O’Keefe’ otherwise known as Tocka. It seems Tocka has not seen the dictionary definition of retirement as he is back playing again in the firsts. If you want more information about the past players day, don’t ask Tocka, call Viv Ion on 0422 897 991. This mention should net the end of season trip fund a few dollars.

WILLIAMSTOWN Cricket Club has a very big day coming up with another president’s lunch on Friday 7 February at The Rocks Function Centre at the Williamstown Cricket Ground, Point Gellibrand. The guest speakers are James Brayshaw and Billy Brownless from the Triple M Rush Hour. Cost is $110 per head which includes beer, wine and soft drink plus a two-course meal. For more details and bookings contact Phil McTaggart 0416 023 739 or Geoff Hart 0414 575 431. The afternoon will go from 1pm to 4pm. SPOTSWOOD Football Club has contacted me because they are looking for a head trainer for 2014. You will need to have a level 1 or 2 Sport’s Trainer qualification and will need to be available for Tuesday and Thursday training, plus all day Saturday. Spotswood is a very successful and well run club and from what I have seen, a club that does value and reward the people who contribute off the field.

DAVID Fenollar claimed the St Albans Gift in a nail-biting finish on Saturday night. A photo was required to split Fenollar and Nathan Riali who hit the finish line together. However, it was Fenollar who came out on top with a time of 12.771 seconds to secure first place in one of the state’s most high quality gifts. Riali’s time of 12.785 secured him second place from Cam Dunbar (12.812) while Luke Stevens (12.845) finished in fourth place. For his efforts, Fenollar walked away with the $3000 first prize. The feature race capped off what was a brilliant day for the St Albans Gift which continues to go from strength to strength. There was also plenty of support for athletes with around 2500 people attending the meet and enjoying the entertainment both on the track and around the grounds.

Lions full of fight By ADEM SARICAOGLU TAYLORS Lakes coach Steve Burns is confident his Lions will remain a premiership contender in 2014. The Division One Essendon District Football League club finished fourth before falling just five points short of victory in a knockout final against Tullamarine last season. Despite his current concerns about pre-season numbers out on the training track, Burns remains confident there is still enough quality on his list to ensure the Lions will again be a contender this season. “It’s probably, if anything, been our worst (pre-season) in the six years I’ve been senior coach,” Burns admitted. “It’s still all right - we’re still averaging 33 or 34 a night which is still pretty good, but we’re normally used to having 50. “But the pleasing thing for me is all our better players are training at the moment. “Out of our best 20 or 22, probably 17 or 18 of them are training, which is good. It’s just the fringe players and the younger blokes coming up that haven’t fronted yet.” Taylors Lakes was notably one of the division’s best defensive units in 2013. The Lions only gave up triple figures on three occasions throughout the season - each time against the eventual grand final-
ists, Glenroy and the Northern Saints. For Burns, the key area for improvement in 2014 will be inside the forward 50, where Mark Xuereb was the only dominant force for the Lions last season. “Our forward line needs to be totally revamped and we need a forward line that’s capable of kicking goals, because our defence and midfield are as good as anybody else in the comp,” Burns said. “We haven’t been able to recruit a key forward but we’ve got Jake De Sousa, Mark’s brother, back from Deer Park, which is handy for us. “He’s a quality footballer who will come into our forward line and we’re going to mix a couple of things up and we’ve got Lachie Calder back as well, who missed most of last year with travelling and injury. “To have those two in there will already make it better and we’re going to go back to some stuff we used to do in the past, which will hopefully make us more potent in that forward 50.” Along with a few former Essendon Doutta Stars under-18s players, midfielder Jay MilfordRobertson has also made the move to Lionheart Reserve, coming across from the Southern Football League during the summer. The Lions will begin their 2014 campaign on the road against Westmeadows in early April.

FOUR Keilor players have made the Essendon District Football League’s 50-man preliminary interleague squad for the upcoming AFL Victoria Metro Championships. Jamie Papalia, David Gourdis and Dylan Joyce will join the EDFL’s reigning Dick Reynolds Medallist, Andrew Browne, as the four Blues who may go on to represent the league against the Northern Football League in late March. Former Greenvale and Pascoe Vale premiership player Denis Bicer will coach the EDFL team alongside assistants Dale Morris, Mark Budge, Tony Abboud, Matthew Egan and Marcus Barham. “We know the Northern league has improved recently with its quality of players and recruits,” Bicer said. “We’ve got to do our due diligence, get the best mix of our own players and form a game plan to our advantage. “What’s most pleasing about the squad is there’s a strong mix of players who have represented all levels of football.” Current Premier Division champion Greenvale has nine representatives in the squad, while Avondale Heights is also wellrepresented with eight. Luke Cartelli, who this summer moved from Keilor to Avondale Heights, is also in the squad. The squad will commence training in late February before the final team is announced ahead of the clash with the NFL. The match will be the second of three interleague games at Visy Park on 29 March, with the Western Region Football League taking on the Southern Football League in the morning and the Eastern Football League playing the Victorian Amateur Football Association later in the afternoon.
