Centre theft alarm By CHARLENE MACAULAY

FOOTSCRAY Police are warning shoppers may get more than they bargained for with an increase in thefts around Highpoint Shopping Centre. Inspector Tony Long has told Star of a boost in car thefts, thefts from cars, and thefts from customers and workers within the shopping centre in recent months. Insp Long said offenders have been caught on CCTV looking for unlocked cars to steal, or for items left in the car in plain sight, such as GPS units or shopping bags. Thieves are targeting Nissan Skylines and other, older car models that are easier to break into than newer models fitted with an immobiliser. Many of the vehicles are being stolen during the day, and many are not being recovered by police. There is also an increase in number plate thefts. Insp Long said police are chasing leads that suggest the stolen cars are being stripped for spare parts and sent overseas, or are being sold for scrap metal. There is also a spate of unattended handbags, purses and mobile

phones being stolen from both customers and shop assistants, with offenders stealing items straight from customer handbags, behind a shop counter, or even from a store room or tea room. Insp Long said with the advent of new tap and go debit and credit cards, thieves can easily spend hundreds of dollars on stolen cards before the victim realises its gone. “We ask everyone in the shopping sphere - from shops to customers - to be careful,” he said. “Most of these crimes are opportunistic and it’s up to you to reduce these opportunities and keep track of your stuff.” Insp Long called on owners of older model cars to use a club lock when parking their car in public. He said all shopping precincts had the same problems, but these were exacerbated at Highpoint due to its sheer size. A foot patrol crew has been based at Highpoint since July. The crew patrols both inside the centre and out in the car parks in a bid to deter shop lifting, car thefts and thefts from vehicles and is used in conjunction with CCTV cameras to reduce crime and catch offenders when a crime occurs.

A FEW months ago, Dylan Young bought a ticket to the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival - now he’s gearing up to play at it. Mr Young, 17, is one part of four-piece indie rock band Bel Air, which took out last year’s Very West competition. The Very West is a yearly competition run by the Footscray Community Arts Centre and the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival to pick out the best talent in the West. The winner gets to play a coveted set at the next St Jerome’s Laneway Festival. Bel Air, which formed in May last year, beat three other bands to take out the title, and band members Cameron Swanson (guitar/vocals), Joshua Knight (bass) and Edan Strachan (drums) are busy working with Mr Young (guitar/vocals) to refine their set for their Laneway debut. “I don’t think it’s hit us yet,” Mr Young said. “We’re obviously really excited, but it was surreal (to win).” Mr Knight said the group, which is based in Ballarat, signed up for the Very West to get their name out there, but never expected to be playing among the likes of Cloud Control and King Krule. “We listen to these guys, so for us to be able to play with them is amazing,” Mr Knight said.

Josh, Cam and Dylan are ready to play at the Laneway Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI Festival. 112599 Bel Air will also be playing in the Battle of the Bands grand final in March and hope to release their debut EP sometime this year. “We want to take it as far as

we can,” Mr Swanson said. The St Jerome’s Laneway Festival is taking place at the Footscray Community Arts Centre on 1 February. Tickets are on sale now.

THE number of homeless youth is soaring in Melbourne’s West and North-Western Suburbs, according to several advocates in the region. They have called for more action to address issues which can lead to homelessness including high rates of youth unemployment, mental health, drugs and alcohol, school suspensions and relationship breakdowns. This comes in the wake of a report from the Council to Homeless Persons, which has proposed that the State Government spend $143 million across a decade to provide more housing and support. More than 18,000 young people from across the West seek assistance from Youth Junction Inc, based in Sunshine, every year. General manager Karen Hart said there was a “huge demand and growing” for homeless services, partly due to a lack of affordable private rental homes and social housing in the West. Chair of the not-for-profit Youth Projects group, Melanie Raymond, said estimates showed more than 40 per cent of clients lived in shortterm “insecure accommodation” which often leads to homelessness. “While inner Melbourne has the highest rates of street homelessness, Melbourne’s outer North and West are seeing a rise in homelessness over the past few years,” Ms Raymond said. “We have heard of clients sleeping in cars, caravans, old warehouses and on the streets in this area. Well-known youth worker Les Twentyman said he had heard of a Brimbank boarding house which has a practice called ’hot bedding’, where multiple people sleep shifts in the one bed.

Road safety blitz By CHARLENE MACAULAY FOOTSCRAY Police will conduct a five month road safety operation targeting the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Police have received funding from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) after a spike in serious injury collisions across the municipality. Footscray Police Inspector Tony Long said in the past 12 months, serious injury collisions had risen by 30 per cent among pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. A serious injury collision involves the drivers or passengers involved in an accident being admitted to hospital because of their injuries.

In the first three weeks of December 2013 alone, seven serious injury collisions were recorded across the municipality. Three of the accidents included cyclists. Insp Long said the dedicated bike lanes along Whitehall St were particularly dangerous for cyclists, with many cars not giving way to bike riders. On 29 December 2013, a 32-year-old Maribyrnong motorcyclist lost his life when he collided with a car in Footscray. TAC figures show that of the 243 people killed on Victoria’s roads in 2013, 40 were riders and passengers of motorcycles, 36 were pedestrians and six were cyclists.

Operation Red Man will include a series of covert and overt operations run by uniform and plain clothes police officers that will focus on drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists doing the wrong thing on the road. Insp Long said drivers were not respecting other road users and were being driven to distraction by mobile phones and other devices. He said many accidents involving cars and other cyclists were caused by drivers not paying proper attention on the road and drifting into bicycle lanes or cutting them off. On the flip side, Insp Long said many pedestrians were putting themselves in danger by disobey-

ing basic road rules and crossing the road at a red light or away from a pedestrian crossing. The problem is particularly prevalent around Footscray’s CBD, Victoria University’s Footscray Park and Footscray Nicholson campus, and schools. For motorcyclists, the problem lies with speeding, cutting in and out of traffic, and not wearing the right protective clothing. “People just seem to not be paying attention to what’s going on around them,” Insp Long said. “The cost to the community is far too high in terms of road trauma.” Operation Red Man starts this month and will run until May.

Multiple charges after city brawl TWO Kingsville men were among four arrested last week over a city brawl between rival soccer fans in December. Police executed a series of warrants across residential properties in Kingsville, Werribee and Norlane on Monday morning, arresting a 44-yearold man and a 19-year-old man from Kingsville, a 19-year-old man from Werribee and a 32-year-old man from Norlane. The arrests follow a brawl outside a licensed premises in Bourke St on 28 December. Three people were treated at the scene and one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries. All four were subsequently charged and have been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 20 May. The 19-year-old Kingsville man has been charged with affray, conduct endangering injury, discharge distress signal (flare), throw/discharge missile. The 44-year-old Kingsville man has been charged with affray, conduct endangering serious injury, throw/discharge missile and carry dangerous article. The 19-year-old Werribee man has been charged with affray, conduct endangering serious injury, throw/discharge missile and possess distress signal (flare). The 32-year-old Norlane man has been charged with affray, conduct endangering serious injury, throw/discharge missile and carry dangerous article. Meanwhile, a 23-year-old man from NSW has since been charged with conduct endangering serious injury, discharging a missile and possessing cannabis. He has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 24 April. Detectives from Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www. crimestoppers.com.au.

Festival has tips for the best home brew By CHARLENE MACAULAY WANT to know how to brew your own beer? Or learn to make your own pan-fried dumplings? Maribyrnong City Council is offering a smorgasbord of tasty morsels for the mouth and the mind as part of the Eat Drink Westside program for this year’s Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. Eat Drink Westside features nine unique events that show off the municipality’s multicultural heritage, including an Ethiopian dinner with traditional dance performances, an afternoon salon with French cuisine and

a race around Footscray to find the ingredients for a Vietnamese, African and Indian soup. “Our events continue to showcase the diverse melting pot of flavours within our community,” Maribyrnong Mayor Grant Miles said. “Discover our City’s foodie gems by sampling Vietnamese cuisine whilst riding a rickshaw, mop up Ethiopian stews with traditional injera bread, learn about our Indigenous heritage and their connection to the Maribyrnong River or you can head straight to the source at the wholesale fish markets in Footscray.”

And if you’re thirsty after all that running around, you can head to Yarraville’s Grain and Grape and take part in a beer brewing demonstration. Three well-known commercial brewers will work their liquid magic by producing a basic home brew, an upmarket home brew and a commercial brew. John Preston started up the home brewing and wine making business in 1990 and said brewing your own beer had soared in popularity over the past decade. “Fifteen years ago, it was an older guy’s hobby, and some did it because they were stingy, but quality and vari-

ety is what people do it for now,” Mr Preston said. “It is possible to make a beer as good as a commercial grade beer (at home).” But it all comes down to how you do it. “If you do it with grain, it’s just like making it in a brewery. Making it with a kit is like having soup out of a can.” The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival will run from 28 February to 16 March. Go to www.festivalcity.com.au to check out all the events happening across the municipality.

FOOTSCRAY’S Western Hospital has returned its worst emergency department performance in a year, State Government figures reveal. The Victorian Health Services Performance Report for the September 2013 quarter shows the hospital’s emergency department failed to treat its category two and three patients within the State Government benchmarks for the first time in a year. Category two patients are people suffering from a critical illness or very severe pain, such as chest pain, while category three patients include those suffering from severe illnesses, head injuries but who are conscious, and people with major bleeding from cuts, major fractures, persistent vomiting or dehydration. Nearly half (47 per cent) of emergency department patients who are not admitted waited more than four hours for treatment, while five patients faced waits of over 24 hours. The elective surgery list has remained relatively stable, with 2060 people on the waiting list. Meanwhile, the hospital spent 111 hours on bypass - more than twice the amount of time reported in the June 2013 quarter - and 95 hours on the hospital early warning system.

Smile with Leyla’s on a colourful journey Confidence Leyla Simone, 12, has published her first book called The Adventures of Lollipop – a story she will share with everyone by donating it to all the local libraries. 112932 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

WHAT started as a bedtime story for one little girl has now become a children’s book for all. At only 12 years of age, Williamstown resident Leyla Simone has published her very first book. Leyla’s imagination and storytelling at bedtime inspired the book called Adventures of Lollipop, which will soon be available at selected local book stores in Yarraville and will be donated to libraries across Hobsons Bay. The book is about a colourful unisus, a cross between a unicorn and Pegasus, who goes on a journey to find her true colour.

“I loved horses and Pegasus and unicorns so I decided to make it into one character and make it into a story with a big adventure with flying and magic in a mythical world,” Leyla said. “And I wanted to make it into a book so everyone could read it because it was a really interesting story,” she said. Leyla said the character, Lollipop, reflected her as she too was going on her own journey. “I’m on my journey, I’m going to high school this year and I’m going to have new adventures as I grow up,” she said. “And I’m finding my inner self.”

Leyla’s mother Jade said the story was based on the Chakra System, the seven energy senses of the body, and would introduce children to learning about the physical, spiritual and energetic dynamics of the body. “It’s a spiritual journey about finding yourself and who you are on the inside as a person, and the colour is the energy centre of your body,” she said. “Leyla’s a very well rounded, really calm and collected kind of a 12-year-old and she has a really good understanding of what’s going and how to deal with things,” she said. “This lovely pop character is basically a representation of her.”

Festival of fun By CHARLENE MACAULAY YARRAVILLE Village will be a hive of activity next month when the new-look Yarraville Festival comes to town. The festival will go from being a one-day festival to a series of events, kicking off with the I Heart Yarraville Fashion Parade on 12 February at the Sun Theatre. Retailers Niche, Village Idiom, Marita’s of Yarraville, Mico, Angelina and One White Lie will dress up models in their latest collections for the event. Tickets are $20 and include a gift bag and glass of champagne. All proceeds from the event will go towards the Heart Foundation. For the first time, the Yarraville Festival will also host the Flik Fest competition, a short film competition for kids and young adults under the age of 21. Entrants have been asked to create a documentary, narrative or abstract film under the theme Made Near Me.

Megan Darling from the Yarraville Festival Committee said more than 15 kids have submitted their films to the Flik fest competition. “Seeing that Yarraville West Primary School has got a really strong media department and are making a lot of films and getting quite a few awards from them, we just wanted to give kids an input into the festival,” she said. “Some of the entries are absolutely hilarious, others are just really good. “It just needs to feature Yarraville, or the kids of Yarraville, or something that makes it a little bit local.” The films will be screened at the Sun Theatre on 16 February, where the festival will really take off with seven stages of entertainment, roving performers, free kids activities, competitions and a teddy bear picnic along Anderson St. For more information, go to www.facebook.com/YarravilleArtsFestival

MARIBYRNONG City Council has a new plan to improve public space in the northern part of Braybrook. The Braybrook North River Precinct Masterplan outlines a shared vision for open space in Braybrook north, the area bounded by Ballarat Rd, Burke St, Evans St and the Maribyrnong River. The Masterplan aims to improve the area and encourage greater visitation through better quality public open space, including parks, streetscapes and tree plantings. It also proposes better recreation opportunities through new walking trails, on-street bike lanes, upgrades to Pennell Reserve and further enhancements of Cranwell Park. Ballarat Rd would become an “urban boulevard” under the plan. “The area of Braybrook covered by the Masterplan has a long history of light industrial use, but also has some great recreation spaces and parks close to the river,” mayor Grant Miles said. The Masterplan can be found at www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au

Landlords hit by damages By CHARLENE MACAULAY TENANTS across the West are costing landlords thousands of dollars in malicious damage and rental defaults. That’s the finding from RACV Insurance, which has called on property investors to take out Landlord Insurance for their rental properties. In Maribyrnong, landlords made only 15 claims with the average claim costing $4217, but the figure was much higher in Hobsons Bay (30 claims), Melton (122), Brimbank (165) and Wyndham (169).

RACV manager of Personal Insurance Phil James said members with landlord insurance lodged a total 2234 claims statewide between 1 July 2012 and 30 June 2013, with RACV paying out a total of almost $10.6 million. The bulk of claims were for malicious damage by the tenant, storm damage and rental default. “Last financial year RACV Insurance paid out an average of $4323 for 380 claims for malicious damage and an average of $3341 for 370 incidents of tenants defaulting on rental

payments but remaining in the property,” Mr James said. “Other common claims included storm damage, water damage to investment properties, burglary and fire.” Mr James said the RACV data showed it was essential for landlords to protect their investment. “In addition to tenants causing damage, landlords also must consider the cost of natural disasters, such as storms, floods and fires and how not having adequate insurance cover could seriously hurt their investment return.” Local news, sport & services online

Masterclasses in art By CHARLENE MACAULAY GOT a creative itch that needs to be scratched? Footscray Community Arts Centre is hosting two masterclasses for anyone interested in needlepoint or street art. Yarraville artist Jessie Deane is famous for turning tapestry on its head with her latest exhibition Needlepoint West, which depicted Footscray’s iconic industrial landscape in needlepoint. In her masterclass, Ms Deane will show participants how to create their own needle work. “I enjoy the sensual nature of creating cloth and images on

cloth and I find the discourse surrounding questions of ‘craft versus art’ compelling,” she said. “I am also interested in subverting a medium that is traditionally considered quaint and pretty, to portray images which actually contrast to the domestic; industrial landscape for example.” Meanwhile, popular street artist Baby Guerrilla will collaborate with participants to create a paste-up on the wall of the Footscray Community Arts Centre. Baby Guerrilla’s street art is visible across the West, with pieces in Footscray’s Chambers Lane, the Reverence Hotel and

on the side of Post Industrial Design. “My mission is to liberate art from just the gallery or the picture frame and make it accessible to everyone,” she said. “I love the idea of setting art free, setting our souls free to dream and imagine and go floating across a wall. “I’m always inspired by people – I find people endlessly fascinating. The themes are about freedom in all its different forms.” Needlepoint with Jessie Deane will be held this Saturday, while the Baby Guerrilla masterclass will run on 8 and 15 February. ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES AND GIVE BLOOD IN WERRIBEE

One in three Australians may need blood or blood products at some point in their lives.

Settle in to save someone’s life

1 in 3 Australians need blood, yet only 1 in 30 donates. Werribee Blood Donor Centre 7 Bridge Street, WERRIBEE To make an appointment call 13 95 96 or visit donateblood.com.au 1114852-EP03-14

THE Australian Red Cross Blood Service is entrusted with the supply of Australia’s blood. The service centre collects, processes and distributes lifesaving blood products. It also delivers world class research and provides expertise in diagnostic, transplantation and other clinical services. Australia needs blood 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The ongoing challenge is to ensure that blood products are efficiently collected and sup-

plied at the right time and of the best quality to meet demand. The Werribee Blood Donor Centre is open six days per week and it is supported by the local residents that generously give up their time to donate blood. Red Cross Blood Service spokesperson Stephanie Reynolds says giving blood is a precious contribution to a wider cause. “One in three Australians will require blood or a blood product at some stage in their

life, whereas only one in 30 Australians give blood. “Giving blood only takes about one hour and it can help save three lives.” To make an appointment or for more information call 13 14 95 or visit www.donateblood. com.au. The Australian Red Cross Blood Service is at 7 Bridge St, Werribee. Call 5337 5110 or email sreynolds@redcrossblood.org. au for more information.

THOSE would-be dancers who have two left feet, have no rhythm and would rather be a wall flower should consider salsa. Salsa dancing is completely inclusive and is suitable for anyone regardless of age, or level of ability. There is also a fantastic range of benefits gained from this dance. Music and dance have been a part of many different cultures for centuries. It has always been a part of celebration, ritual, exercise, communication and pleasure and whether they knew it or not way back when the dancing began, the health benefits were, and still are enormous. Latin dance is a great way

to develop new social relationships. In Latin America, salsa dancing is a massive part of the culture and its social life. Within an established class setting, if the group of students are always the same, a natural understanding develops over time. Based on the fact that while exercising together people discover an instinctive way to communicate with body language. Dancing is actually a way to express feelings, emotions, personality, thoughts and is consequently a very direct instrument to develop new friendships. If the group is harmonic, it often happens that people decide to go out together to a salsa event

or other places other than the regular classes. Come along, make new friends and see new places! Salsa is a great form of exercise. Salsa dancing is a unique form of exercise because it provides the heart-healthy benefits of an aerobic exercise while also allowing participants to engage in a social activity. Among its benefits, salsa builds endurance and stamina, helps with weight loss and on average burning off 420 or more calories per hour. Dancing can burn more calories an hour than riding a bike or swimming. It also relieves stress, helps release toxins and greatly increase overall fitness and general wellbeing.

Angelina Ballerina Classes for students aged three to six years focus on dance education and child development and psychology.

1102668-EP4-14

STEPS Studios is an all-inclusive dance school that offers dance education and fun for a variety of ages and levels of ability and interest. It has everything from important early childhood development classes, integration of special needs students and those with learning difficulties, to advanced level classes for the vocationally minded student. Dance brings its students many benefits. It helps to develop self-confidence in extremely shy individuals and the cognitive and motor skill development of young children, through to the achievement of career aspirations. Steps student Madison Lu, at the age of eight, made her professional theatre debut as Molly in the Melbourne production of Annie at the Regent Theatre. Through movement, dance provides an opportunity for artistic, creative and personal expression, physical exercise and the development of musicality, positive discipline, self-confidence and psychological and neurological benefits which all assist academic studies and personal development. The curriculum begins with Angelina Ballerina Classes for students aged three to six years with a focus on dance education and child development and psychology. Research has proved that learning dance is instrumental in the development of social, emotional, physical and cognitive needs of this age group. A child’s first seven years are critical in the development of cognitive/neural, motor, socioemotional and language development. Steps provides an active learning environment through its early childhood Angelina Ballerina Dance Program which is safe, effective, developmentally appropriate and fun! The program sets children up to naturally progress into the Royal Academy of Dance classical ballet syllabus to continue their dance education for either recreational or vocational endeavours. Steps also offers theatrical classes in jazz/funk,

“Ice c What ream is exq a pity it isn’t uisite. illegal” – (Frenc Voltaire h philo sophe r)

FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? DB: Hmm, it would have to be something with mud crabs – maybe some kind of mud crab pasta sauce, or crayfish. It’s pretty hard to beat mud crabs. FB: What is your favourite drink? DB: Heineken, followed closely by Grolsch, Stella, Carlsberg and Becks. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? DB: James Hetfield, Kirk Hammet (Metallica frontman and lead guitarist) and three of my mates. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? DB: Get out of the kitchen and cook outside on a fire like a caveman!

Hope you had lovely, indulgent Christmas Day. While the celebrations might only last a day, Christmas leftovers certainly make sure the festive spirit lives on … and on. They’re the gift that keeps on giving! On Christmas Day in our house, we barely seemed to make a dent on the leg of ham we had in our fridge (which happened to be the size of Brazil), so I had to get creative. I chopped up thick slices to make special fried rice, which my eight year old son adores. Our other solution was to buy lovely loaves of sourdough bread and Swiss cheese slices from the supermarket deli and have ham and Swiss cheese toasties. But others were much more creative than me. My friend Kylea (who married into a big Italian family) says “I made aranchini balls with cut up leftover ham, fried up so it tasted like smoked bacon.” Ann Marie used her leftover turkey to make turkey noodle soup with

somen noodles, soy sauce, fresh ginger, lemongrass and baby spinach: “Kids love this and it only takes seven minutes to make.” Emily’s Turkey Bake involved slapping turkey, stuffing and leftover vegies into a baking dish, topping it with gravy and crisping it up in the oven. Simon whipped up a mean ham and roast vegie frittata. While Carlie says “My great aunt made turkey pie the next day, and put the leftover roast vegies into a pureed soup plus a minestrone. And there was STILL food!” I’d love to hear what creative things you did with your Christmas leftovers. It might give us all a head start on this year’s Christmas celebrations! Email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au I’m also keen to know what kitchen gadgets Santa left in your stocking – my husband is now the proud owner of a nifty little device called the Slap Chop. You just put a few vegies under it, slap the top down a couple of times and voila – instant salad!

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? DB: If there’s fire involved I’m O.K! You can’t go wrong with a wood-fired pizza or a barbecue. FB: What is your signature dish? DB: I don’t know about signature dish, but I like cooking up marinated ribs on the Weber or firing up the spit-roaster with a pig or lamb. I also smoke trout that I grow at home in my Aquaponics system and I make a pretty good stinging nettle pesto!

THE Melbourne Aces may be sitting second-last coming into the final weekend of the Australian Baseball League regular season, but they still remain in the hunt for post-season action. The 20-22 Aces are one of four clubs log-jammed in the middle of the ABL table, with Adelaide (21-21), Sydney (2121) and Canberra (20-22) all vying to fill the remaining two spots up for grabs in the top three. Over the weekend the Aces managed to split their fourgame series 2-2 with the Brisbane Bandits at the Altona Ballpark, keeping themselves alive with four more games to come on the road this weekend against the third-placed Sydney Blue Sox. Manager Phil Dale is confident his Aces can easily bounce back after dropping the final game of the Brisbane series 4-2 on Sunday. “We match up with anyone in this league and we’re as good a team as anyone, so on any given day we can beat any other team,” Dale said. “We’ve just got to win every game we can now.” Melbourne’s final home series of the regular season began in disappointing fashion on Thursday night with a 6-4 loss to the Bandits.

Brad Harman was the hero for the Aces in games two and three against Brisbane over the weekend. 111137 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT However the following two outings over the next two nights proved to be more fortunate for the Aces. On Friday, Aces shortstop Brad Harman made a hero of himself at the end of a gruelling 13-inning encounter, firing a two-run homer over left field to hand Melbourne a memorable 4-2 win. As though that wasn’t enough, Harman then did it again the following night in the bottom of the eighth, scoring another clutch home run to get his Aces over the line 5-3. Sunday’s game was also on the line in the bottom of the eighth, with Melbourne looking to go ahead with bases loaded

and only one out. However, two consecutive strikeouts kept the final score to 4-2 in Brisbane’s favour. While Harman’s hitting at the plate was a feature of the series, Dale was also keen to praise relief pitcher Brett Zawacki - who on Friday shut Brisbane out in the final four innings. “I used him in an unusual lot of innings, which he’s not used to and that took him out of the game today (Sunday), but he did a great job to get the win (on Friday),” Dale said. Melbourne’s do-or-die series with Sydney begins this Thursday night.

Ahead of the pack AFTER a week of 40-plus temperatures, the Footscray Cycling Club’s Max Campbell Memorial was held in cool and overcast conditions at Altona’s Drake Boulevard on Sunday. Conditions provided a perfect day to honour a man who raced and volunteered at the FCC for over 50 years in rain, hail or shine. The A Grade race was over as soon as it began with a casual Adrian Hanson rolling off the front of the bunch on the first lap, only to be joined by Dom Dudkiewicz. The pair rode off into the distance and were never reeled in. Dudkiewicz has been in unbeatable form of late but was still surprised that such an early two-man breakaway survived. “We started the race and I saw Adrian Hanson and Jason Costin just riding, not attacking off the front, and then we got around the top corner and I saw Adrian just casually increasing the distance from the bunch. “I was about to jump when Adrian went, so as I went past Adrian I said ‘let’s do this’. So he got on my wheel. “We cut a really hard couple of laps and probably got 20 seconds on the bunch and then we just kept going. “I think the first few laps averaged 46-odd kilometres an hour. I thought that it was too early as we had to do this for over an hour but we just kept working and kept the lead at about 30 seconds.” In the final laps, behind the dynamic duo, the situation could only be described as carnage, with attacks breaking the bunch up into broken lines of riders, with Graham Carlson trying to bridge the gap or at least ensure third place. Dudkiewicz came out of the last corner and passed Hanson, taking the win with Hanson a few bike lengths behind, followed by a lonely Carlson who took third place. In other results, Trevor Perry claimed the B Grade race while Gerard Zammit and Vladimir Djric were victorious in C Grade and D Grade respectively.

Star… Connecting people with the local sport they love.

Cream of the crop By LIAM TWOMEY OUTSTANDING athletes from Melbourne’s Western Suburbs have contributed to making the 2012/13 Don Deeble Rising Star Award one of the most impressive in its history. With nominations for the cycle beginning in June 2012, the Don Deeble Rising Star Award has been presented to 16 athletes from all corners of the West who have achieved outstanding results at a state or national level. From the 16 nominees, a total of 13 sports were also represented including volleyball, cricket, hockey, netball and football. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and is sponsored by the Yarraville Club

Cricket Club. Each month, one nominee receives $1000 towards achieving their sporting goals while at the award’s grand final, the overall winner is given $5000. On top of that, this year will see three runners-up each receive $2000. After hours of deliberation by award organisers, the finalists for the award are Aaron Wain (taekwondo), Dejan Vasiljevic (basketball), Morgan Mitchell (athletics) and Nathan Pellissier (table tennis). All four young athletes have not only reached an incredibly high level of results at a state level but have also progressed to national and international competition. Sunshine Western Region Sports Club vice-resident Barry Watson

was rapt with the calibre of nominees. “The standard this year has been very high and very even,” Watson said. “We have a hard job in deciding the placegetters with this year’s lot having more depth to their talents.” The overall winner will be announced on Wednesday 29 January. Also on the night, former AFL player and coach David Parkin will be the guest speaker for the event. Previous winners of the Don Deeble Rising Star Award have included rising Australian basketball stars Rachel Jarry and Dante Exum, national women’s hockey member Danielle Schubach and cycling star Kendelle Hodges while current Australian Women’s Ashes representative Jess Cameron and AFL

footballer Bachar Houli were also monthly nominees. With the 2012/13 Don Deeble Rising Star Award cycle drawing to a close, organisers are now on the lookout for more young talent to nominate this year. “We certainly encourage all athletes, coaches and parents to email their respective son’s, daughter’s, friend’s or kid’s achievements (age bracket 13-20),” Watson said. “There are a number of ways, even if not nominated for a monthly award, that they can be helped. “Any athlete travelling and having to pay costs can be supported by our club.” To nominate a junior athlete for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award, contact starsport@starnewsgroup. com.au or call 9933 4800.

Eagles fail in tough chase By LIAM TWOMEY YARRAVILLE’S tough run in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association has continued with the Eagles going down to Box Hill by 49 runs on Saturday. In good conditions, Box Hill won the toss and chose to bat first and it didn’t take long for the Mustangs to get on top. Box Hill added 40 runs for the first wicket, 54 for the second wicket and 79 for the third wicket to lay the foundation for a big score. Despite Yarraville’s struggles with

the ball, Curtis Maguire worked hard to secure two wickets while Timothy McRae and Ryan Cox finished with one each. However, there was no slowing down for the Box Hill batting line up which finished at 5/227 after 45 overs. In reply, the Yarraville run chase got off to a great start with the Eagles cruising to 1/107 thanks to Maguire and Bradley Jones who combined for a 91run stand. But the loss of Jones for 17 triggered a batting collapse as Yarraville went on

to lose its remaining nine wickets for 71 runs. Paul Gloury was the pick of the Box Hill bowlers, taking 4/32 as the Eagles’ innings came to an end at 178 in the 45th over. The result takes Yarraville’s season record to two wins and six losses. The Eagles occupy 13th place on the VSDCA east/west ladder. When round 10 kicks off this weekend, Yarraville with take on fourthplaced Noble Park.

YARRAVILLE Club is now on the verge of a top four spot after collecting its third successive win in Senior Division Turf Cricket on Saturday. In a must-win one-day clash, the visiting Clubbers were able to take care of lowly Keilor at Robert Bruce Reserve. The Blues had first use of the wicket after winning the toss and were ultimately punished for a poor start in the middle, only managing to post 122 before Yarraville Club chased it down with ease, scoring 8/177 in reply. Keilor openers Warren Kelly and Kristian Dixon both went cheaply at the top of the order falling victim to Yarraville Club captain-coach Emmett Bronca for a duck and three respectively. With Hans Fernando and Mubasher Hassan at the crease, the Blues then recovered to reach 2/35 before Bronca struck again for his third and final wicket Hassan caught behind for 13. Shaun Guerra then added 33 with Fernando before Adam Con-

tessa trapped him on the pads for 22 and soon after Lachlan Sneddon was run out for four. From there the host struggled as Fernando was left to fend for himself, watching another two batting partners fall at the other end before he too was run out by Mark Williams for 47. With Andrew Cullen in to clean up the tail, Keilor’s innings was halted with 28 balls to come. Yarraville Club then made much better use of the wicket during its chase, getting on top of a number of Keilor bowlers. Sneddon was the lone standout with the ball for the Blues, claiming rather erratic figures of 5/37 from just four overs. Dixon (1/14), Kelly (1/14) and Roshan Laksiri (1/41) snared the remaining three wickets for Keilor on the day. After three straight road games, the fifth-placed Clubbers will now spend the next month at home, with crucial two-dayers coming up against current top four clubs, Airport West, St Christopher’s and Bentleigh.

Playing with a passion A GREAT man once said: “A week is a long time in football” and he was right. Last week I wrote that Deer Park premiership player Shannon Broadbent had been the subject of social media in regards to his exclusion from the WRFL Interleague squad. He was originally left out as the selectors thought he was not playing in the WRFL in 2014. He was contacted and assured the selectors he was definitely playing at Deer Park so they included him in the squad as you would expect of the 2013 Barry Priest Medallist. Last week Shannon signed to play with Tatura for the 2014 season. The newspaper reports that I read were very strong that money was a big factor in the decision. I have no issue with Shannon getting well paid for what he brings to a club, good on him. If clubs want to go down that track, that is their choice. My concern, as it has been for many years, is the culture and expectation we are showing the young players coming through. If it is all about money then grassroots footy is doomed. I don’t back away from that and if you think differently please let me know your thoughts. I look at my eight-year-old son who wants to play footy, he does not know about it as an occupation, he just loves the game. It would be very sad if we lost that. Let me know what you think. THE Yarraville Club Cricket Club has its past players and members day coming up on Saturday 8 February when the first XI take on Bentleigh. They will have many special offers on the day but basically it is a great opportunity for past players to come back and relive old times and have a good time at the club. One person who might be confused is ‘John Farnham O’Keefe’ otherwise known as Tocka. It seems Tocka has not seen the dictionary definition of retirement as he is back playing again in the firsts. If you want more information about the past players day, don’t ask Tocka, call Viv Ion on 0422 897 991. This mention should net the end of season trip fund a few dollars. WILLIAMSTOWN Cricket Club has a very big day coming up with another president’s lunch on Friday 7 February at The Rocks Function Centre at the Williamstown Cricket Ground, Point Gellibrand. The guest speakers are James Brayshaw and Billy Brownless from the Triple M Rush Hour. Cost is $110 per head which includes beer, wine and soft drink plus a two-course meal. For more details and bookings contact Phil McTaggart 0416 023 739 or Geoff Hart 0414 575 431. The afternoon will go from 1pm to 4pm. Walker takes on the world ing cricketers. “Alex Gregory and James Bazley can bat up the order and bowl pace, helping make up a strong bowling contingent, including Billy Stanlake, Ben Ashkenazi, Matt Fotia, Cameron Valente and Guy Walker. The depth of Australia’s fast bowling stocks is in good health and indicative of the high level of talent that continues to come through our system.” The World Cup will begin on 14 February in the United Arab Emirates. Australia will compete in Group B of the tournament against Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Namibia with the top two teams progressing to the Super League quarter-finals. The Australian squad will be coached by Cricket Australia’s high performance coach Graeme Hick. The squad will depart at the end of this month to play three matches in Sri Lanka as build-up for the tournament.

SPOTSWOOD Football Club has contacted me because they are looking for a head trainer for 2014. You will need to have a level 1 or 2 Sport’s Trainer qualification and will need to be available for Tuesday and Thursday training, plus all day Saturday. Spotswood is a very successful and well run club and from what I have seen, a club that does value and reward the people who contribute off the field. THE Big Bay Swims start this weekend in Williamstown with the Willy Lifesavers annual 2km and 1km swims from Williamstown beach. This is followed on 23 February with the Rotary annual Jalna Bay swim and then the Melbourne Swim Classic at St Kilda Beach on 1 March. If you want more details www.bigbayswim.com.au DON’T forget to tune in to SEN this Saturday and Sunday. GUY Walker continues to climb the ranks of Australian Cricket. The latest achievement in an ever-growing list of accomplishments for the rising star is selection in the Australian Under 19 cricket side for the World Cup. The 15-player squad is made of the best young talent in the country. Walker drew praise from Cricket Australia’s national talent manager Greg Chappell who was impressed with the squad. “The ICC U19 Cricket World Cup is a wonderful opportunity for our country’s best young talent to perform on the international stage, following in the footsteps of players like Michael Clarke, Shane Watson and Mitchell Johnson, who have previously taken the field for Australia in the youth World Cup,” Chappell said. “The balance and flexibility of this squad is pleasing, containing a solid core of Australia’s most excit-

By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater remains on top of the Premier Cricket ladder after a comprehensive victory against Melbourne Uni on Saturday. After a dominant day one, the Bulldogs travelled to University Oval for the second half of the match needing just 172 for victory. Resuming in the middle were Bulldogs’ captain Dean Russ and Lucas Dredge but not everything went to plan for Footscray. After adding 22 runs to the total Russ was bowled by Steven Reid for 35. That brought Travis Dean to the crease with the middle order batsman combining with Dredge to produce a match winning partnership. The pair added 111 for the third wicket to guide Footscray to 2/189. Despite the lopsided nature of the scorecard, the Melbourne Uni bowlers continued to fight with gun leg spinner Fawad Ahmed causing the most problems. After Dredge was finally dismissed for an impressive 66, Dean followed just six runs later for 61. But the double strike did nothing to slow the Bulldogs down with Dylan Kight and Shanuka Dissanayaka taking Footscray to the win for the loss of just four wickets. Kight went on to make 40 not out while Dissanayaka finished the innings unbeaten on 64. The match was eventually stopped in the 93rd over with Footscray at 4/302. On what was a tough day for the fielding side, Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers and finished with the figures of 2/64 off 33 overs. Saturday’s results has Footscray three points clear of the secondplaced Melbourne on the Premier Cricket ladder. St Kilda is in third spot with 46 points. Round 15 of the Premier Cricket season continues this weekend with the Bulldogs taking on Northcote in a two-day encounter.

Oil changes should be done about every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres. Anything related to the cooling system should also be checked and car owners should pop the hood and check the battery for acid leaks. Summer can tear up tyres, so check the tread. If parking in the sunshine during summer every day there are several things that can be done to protect the inside part of the car. A windshield sun shade is usually something that folds out and then folds up easily for storing behind the seat. If a shade is used every time the car is parked it will help cut the sun’s rays and can reduce a bit of the heat.

While one can be used for the front, a back window shade can also be helpful for some car types. There are products available that can provide an additional protective layer, such as vinyl or leather protectants. Wherever possible, find shady or indoor car parking during the hottest parts of the day.

In some places this is possible if there are carparks lined along a park or in leafy neighbourhoods. Obviously, many places lack trees for shade but check out building shade. Try to look for streets where the shade created by buildings will be passing over the car during the hottest part of the day.

The bars are located at the bottoms of the tread grooves in several locations around the tyre. When a tyre is so worn that these bars become visibly flush with the adjacent tread ribs, it’s time to replace the tyre.
