A WERRIBEE vet’s call for the Australian Government to stop a practice which has led to the death of almost 400 dogs has gone viral. Dr Sam Long created an online petition after learning that Australian greyhounds were being exported to China to race in substandard conditions, and that when they were unable to perform or if they became injured, they were being destroyed. Dr Long’s petition claims that last year alone almost 400 greyhounds were killed in Macau, an administrative region of China. “There was a sense of horror when I found out about this, it really is something that just shouldn’t be happening,” Dr Long told Star. “The majority of these dogs are sent to a racetrack in Macau called the Canidrome where the policy is to have any dog that does not perform well put down. “The dogs are very cruelly treated because they are just considered commodities. “I thought I have to do something about this.” Dr Long, who lives in Newport, created the petition on 23 December last year on the website change. org. When he checked the petition’s progress on 6 January he was

amazed to see 15,000 people had signed it. As of last week it had gone truly viral, receiving over 20,000 signatures and thousands of comments of support. “To get over 16,000 signatures in a week shows that people really do care about this.” Dr Long, who specialises as a neurologist and has spent much of his career working in the USA and Scotland, said he was aiming to get 30,000 people to sign the petition before he presented it to the Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, which he hoped to do in person. Star contacted Mr Joyce’s office for comment but they did not respond before deadline. The greyhound industry in Australia has also remained silent on the issue, with Greyhounds Australasia, the peak national body for the industry, failing to release the results of its own review into its approach to live exports. WESTERN Suburbs residents will have to wait a bit longer for a much-needed school after “time constraints” caused the opening of a primary school on the old Mowbray College Caroline Springs campus to be delayed by up to two years. Wyndham Councillor Intaj Khan bought the campus for $6 million after it was closed down due to massive debts. Star revealed last year that he was planning on opening a primary school on the site under the name of West Melbourne Grammar School. But his plans hit a snag when he was taken to court by Westbourne Grammar School because his chosen name was too similar to theirs.

Mr Khan said the school would now be called West Lakes Grammar School. And while it was hoped the school would open this year, Mr Khan said a submission to the Victorian Registrations and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) could not be completed on time and he was now looking at a 2015 opening. “A number of things delayed the opening,” Mr Khan said. “For one, we were proposing a primary school but the campus was suited for a secondary school, so we had to work around that.” Mr Khan said he had already received 80 expressions of interest from parents and he was confident the school would be ready to accept students next year.

“We’ve done a feasibility study and we know that we need 220 students minimum in the first year to make it viable,” he said. “We’ve already received 80 expressions of interest even though we haven’t advertised anything. “We’ve replied back to those parents and apologised and explained that we won’t be able to open this year.” Mr Khan said the community was obviously crying out for a new school in the area. “We’ve had a few hurdles recently and now I think we’re on track,” he said. “It’s disappointing that we won’t open this year but it is also disappointing that the parents have to go through this.”

I WAS really happy to see The Age run a feature in their Good Life magazine on the ‘Six reasons to visit Werribee’. In order they were The Open Range Zoo and in particular the Rhythm of Africa show, The Werribee River Trail, The B-24 Liberator bomber, the cakes and pastries at Mondells in Watton St, Our United Nations of Restaurants and the Werribee Mansion. Isn’t it great to see a positive story about why people should make a trip to our city. When you add the State Rose Garden which is next to the Mansion, but not part of it, and Shadowfax Winery (ditto) it is, as we all know, a great place to live and to visit. In the future we will have the Werribee South Marina and the Watton St Piazza, so let’s talk it up as much as we can. The one thing that is lacking is a shopping destination but maybe the Plaza will be that after the renovations are complete. THE fact that The Age did a positive feature on Werribee makes me think that maybe the perception of our city is changing or at least I hope it is. I still feel we do not do enough to promote the great things about our city, and we still are stereotyped, like Frankston, as we have seen in recent news stories. I think it is time our elected officials grabbed the baton and jumped into the big picture. We need television and the media to be made aware of what we have to offer in so many areas. It is time to act. We are not a feral backlot. We are a vibrant, growing city with enormous opportunities for those that want to see past the perceptions of a bogan wasteland. By the way, there are a lot of very wealthy people who have made their millions in the City of Wyndham. You would be amazed. I WILL be hosting the Wyndham City Australia Day Celebrations this Sunday at the Victoria University track in Hoppers Lane. It should be a great event with music, dancing, face painting, slides and much more. Check out the council website for more details.

Cat caught in rabbit trap By XAVIER SMERDON A WERRIBEE man has been fined for laying an illegal rabbit trap which caught and seriously injured a cat, leading to the amputation of one of its paws. The man appeared at the Werribee Magistrates’ Court late last year where he pleaded guilty to two charges relating to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act after setting the serrated jaw trap in Riverside Avenue in July 2013. No conviction was recorded against the man but he was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay $1000 to fund the cat’s medical costs. Wyndham Mayor Bob Fairclough urged residents to make sure they comply with legal requirements before laying any animal traps. “This is a disturbing case, but one which could have easily been prevented,” Cr Fairclough said. “Fortunately, the injured cat has since recovered and found a new home and this incident serves as a timely warning about the dangers of animal traps. “Aside from their intended victims, some animal traps have the potential to cause severe injuries to other animals and even humans. By XAVIER SMERDON HUNDREDS of Wyndham residents faced a life-threatening situation last week as a fast-moving grassfire threatened to engulf the area. The fire started at around 11.45am on Tuesday and residents were at one point sent a warning by the CFA that emergency services may not be able to rescue them. A CFA spokesperson said a large number of fire trucks were sent to get the fire under control. “Twenty-seven vehicles attend-

ed the fire, which was around Bulban Rd. About 100 hectares were burnt,” the spokesperson said. “Knowing the shortage of water points in the area bulk tankers were called for and the Anakie bulk water tanker. Aircraft also attended with Helitack 347 hitting the edges of the fire in the rocky paddocks. “An Emergency Warning was issued, and at the height of the fire an Emergency Alert (text and voice messages) was also sent to a small group of residents under direct threat of the fire. “Residents turned to social

media to describe the frontline of the fire. Stacie Robinson offered a hand to people, posting her mobile number on facebook and offering to transport any horses out of the area. Kathy McGorry told Star that she feared her family’s property would be lost. “I wasn’t there at the time, which made it even scarier,” Ms McGorry said. “I felt helpless because I couldn’t do anything. We all feel so lucky that the brave firefighters were able to get it under control.”

The Emergency Warning was downgraded to a Watch and Act message at 1.40pm and crews brought the fire under control, stopping it at Bulban Rd, by around 1.50pm. Luckily, no properties were impacted. District Mechanical Officers also attended to replace several tyres damaged on CFA vehicles by the sharp rocks and high temperatures affecting cooling systems. A Victoria Police spokesperson said the cause of the fire was being investigated.

SOME of Wyndham’s older residents are rejoicing after claiming a win on behalf of people power. Late last year Star reported that the Australian Taxation Office had made a draft ruling that would have seen the GST on the houses of almost 1000 mobile home residents in Wyndham increased by 10 per cent. But the ATO recently announced that following steady campaigns from seniors groups, the draft ruling would be reversed. “Over the past seven weeks, we have been considering a range of submissions from the community and stakeholders as part of our consultation pro-

cess,” Tax Commissioner Chris Jordan said in a statement. “We have carefully considered the legal arguments and practical implications and decided that we don’t need to change the existing GST treatment of these estates. “Our preliminary view had been that moveable home estates were not sufficiently similar to caravan parks to be commercial residential premises.” Member for Lalor Joanne Ryan had raised the matter in parliament on behalf of Wyndham residents. “This is fantastic news for those living in local residential parks but also the wider community,” Ms Ryan said. “But it was only achieved because of the work and deter-

mination of local residents who were willing to stand up and be heard. “This back down will provide some welcome relief to those living in mobile homes, particularly those on a pension or fixed retirement income.” Ison Village resident Bub Purvis who campaigned against the increased tax, said the reversal of the decision was a win for the people. “Some people coming in to these kinds of places don’t have a lot of money, so for them to have that weight of their shoulders, is like winning the tattslotto,” Mr Purvis said. “We’ve shown that we’re willing to fight and I think the reason it was reversed was people power, for sure.”

Multiple brawl charges By CHARLENE MACAULAY A WERRIBEE man was among four arrested last week over a city brawl between rival soccer fans in December. Police executed a series of warrants across residential properties in Kingsville, Werribee and Norlane on Monday morning, arresting a 44-yearold man and a 19-year-old man from Kingsville, a 19-yearold man from Werribee and a 32-year-old man from Norlane. The arrests follow a brawl outside a licensed premises in Bourke St on 28 December. Three people were treated at the scene and one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Disturbing discovery By XAVIER SMERDON A WESTERN Suburbs scientist has made a surprising discovery that people travelling on foot could be more disturbing to wildlife than a busload of sightseers. Dr Patrick-Jean Guay from Victoria University studied the response of nearly 40 waterbird species to visits into their habitat by walkers, cyclists, cars and buses. The research was funded by Melbourne Water and performed at the Western Treatment Plant in Werribee. “We found that across species motor vehicles always

evoked shorter flight-initiated distances, meaning that motor vehicles were less disturbing to the birds than groups of walkers and even single walkers,” Dr Guay said. Dr Guay said disruption of the normal activity of wildlife by humans was generally regarded as a conservation problem, yet it was widely assumed that pedestrians were less disruptive. He said the implication was that protecting wildlife from human disturbance in sensitive areas may actually be better achieved by promoting access to those in cars and minibuses, rather than pedestrians.

“Not only have motor vehicles been shown to disturb the wildlife less but they are also capable of carrying more people in one visit, potentially reducing the overall number of incursions into the habitat,” he said. “Organised ecotourism where a busload of tourists is driven through conservation areas may be preferable to that same number of people having free range to walk through that area.” The research could have major implications for tourism and the way its impact is viewed in parts of Victoria and Australia.

Contemporary art reaches out By XAVIER SMERDON MELBOURNE-BASED artist Clinton Nain is bringing his contemporary art, which explores the impact of European settlement on the Indigenous nations of Australia, to the Wyndham Art Gallery as part of this year’s Midsumma Festival. With a diverse set of talents ranging from video to textiles, fashion design, painting and performance, Clinton’s latest exhibition, REACH, has a message that not only challenges, but also provides hope and powerfully presents the richness and beauty of his culture. Some of his artworks that will

be included in this year’s exhibition are made from velvet, which has been stained by White King bleach, which Clinton told Star represented his view of white settlement in Australia and its impact on the indigenous community. NEW insurance figures show that property investors in the Western Suburbs are facing huge risks with more than 500 claims for malicious damage and rental defaults being lodged with RACV Insurance. RACV Manager of Personal Insurance, Phil James, said the company’s latest data showed that 169 people made claims in Wyndham, 165 were made in Brimbank and122 were made in Melton. A further 30 claims were lodged in Hobsons Bay and 15 were lodged in Maribyrnong. In total the bill for the West came to almost $30,000. “The average claim cost almost $3,500 in Wyndham, $7,000 in Brimbank and $6,000 in Melton, demonstrating the financial impact property damage or lost rental income can have,” Mr James said. Mr James said members with landlord insurance lodged a total 2,234 claims statewide between July 1 2012 and June 30 2013, with RACV paying out a total of almost $10.6 million. “Last financial year RACV Insurance paid out an average of $4,323 for 380 claims for malicious damage and an average of $3,341 for 370 incidents of tenants defaulting on rental payments but remaining in the property,” he said. “RACV Insurance also paid out an average of $3,087 for 213 claims for renters defaulting on rent when vacating the property without notice. “Other common claims included storm damage, water damage to investment properties, burglary and fire.” Mr James said the RACV data showed it was essential for landlords to protect their investment. “In addition to tenants causing damage, landlords also must consider the cost of natural disasters, such as storms, floods and fires and how not having adequate insurance cover could seriously hurt their investment return,” he said.

Learning to swim to survive By XAVIER SMERDON A WYNDHAM father who wanted nothing more than for his son to have the best chances in life has used his ambition to help hundreds of other families in similar situations. Steve Morgan’s son Corey has autism, making usually simple things like swimming lessons a major hurdle. Almost four years ago Mr Morgan grew frustrated with the lack of services for special needs children in the West, so he decided to do something about it. He started up the Rainbow

Club of Point Cook, a group that aims to teach autistic children how to survive around water. The first class had only six people attend, and in just a few short years it had grown to 150 people and 15 instructors. “The year immediately before we started these classes seven autistic children died in water related incidents in Victoria,” Mr Morgan said. “One thing that comes with autism is that the children love water, they are drawn to it, but they just don’t the natural reflexes to survive in it.” Werribee South 10-year-old,

Sophia Nave, has been taking swimming lessons with the Rainbow Club since they first started. Her mother Lana said she has seen remarkable changes in her daughter. “It’s definitely made her more confident,” Ms Nave said. “She’s open to anything now when it comes to the water, because she trusts the instructor and she’s formed a relationship with them.” Classes are still available at the Rainbow Club for this year. Backyard birdwatch app By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM is quickly becoming the place to be for birdwatchers, and a new smartphone app is likely to cement that fact. Bird Watching in My Backyard, an ebook that allows the user to take photos of videos of birds and share them with people all over the world, was launched in Sanctuary Lakes last week. Co-creator of the app, Ron Smith, said by utilising smart phones it was hoped that the love of bird watching would be shared with younger generations.

“By publishing in a mobile phone format we are harnessing the convenience and familiarity of the technology to encourage people outside their home to appreciate their own back yard,” Mr Smith said. “Bird Watching In My Back Yard provides information and images of 24 of the most common birds to visit Australian backyards and details where to find them, what they get up to and of course how to identify them.” Mr Smith said the app would allow parents to teach their children about the importance of birds and how to protect them.

MEMBER for Lalor Joanne Ryan has reminded Wyndham residents wishing to attend Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli next year that the ballot will close on 31 January. The memorial service will mark 100 years since Australia’s involvement in World War I. “With only a few weeks to go, it’s really important that anyone who wants to be there submit their application as soon as possible,” Ms Ryan said. Ms Ryan said the ballot system had been agreed upon by the Governments of Australia,

New Zealand and Turkey as the most fair and equitable process for organising attendance. “Thousands of Australians will want to be a part of this truly exceptional experience and so I would urge local people to register at http://www.gallipoli2015.dva.gov.au” she said. Ms Ryan also reminded local community groups to apply for funding under the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program for projects within the Wyndham community. She said that the program provided each electorate with $125,000 in funding to com-

memorate the Anzac Centenary and the First World War I. “These grants are open now, so those in the community thinking about developing a project to commemorate the Centenary should apply for funding,” Ms Ryan said. “This is an important opportunity to honour the service and sacrifice of Australian servicemen and women, so I would encourage our community groups to get involved.” Program guidelines and applications are available on the Anzac Centenary website at www.anzaccentenary.gov.au

Sporting clubs, schools, commercial operators and casual hirers of Wyndham’s sporting facilities are all being encouraged to have a say. Councillor Peter Maynard said the Sports Ground Policy Review would allow Wyndham Council to continue to deliver sporting facilities suitable for residents of all ages and abilities. “We want to hear from people who use Wyndham’s sporting facilities, both individuals and clubs,” Cr Maynard said. This week the area will celebrate 150 years since it became known as Wyndham

WHEN William Buckley, an English convict who was transported to Australia for knowingly receiving a bit of stolen cloth, escaped from David Collins’ camp, he became part of Australian folklore. It was thought that it would be impossible for Buckley to survive the harsh conditions of the Australian land in 1803, yet he managed to come in contact with the Wathaurang Aboriginal people, who thought he was the returned spirit of a brave warrior. To everyone’s amazement, Buckley ended up living with

Shire. On 15 December 1909 it was renamed the Shire of Werribee and 85 years later on 15 December 1994 it was again renamed to the City of Wyndham. And while Wyndham has been home to many famous Australians over the years the last 150 years holds many secrets that will likely go untold. with five other people we were able to deliver it to every house in Hoppers Crossing in just one evening,” Ms Goodwin said. Ms Goodwin said while she was proud to be part of Wyndham’s rich history, she hoped the future would be bright too. “The people of the area have always been the best thing about it. I wouldn’t live anywhere else now,” she said. “I think people need to speak out for themselves more now though. “We’ve got the numbers here, we can get things done.”

Dancing with the singing star By ALESHA CAPONE A Caroline Springs resident will perform with singer Sarah De Bono during her upcoming shows in South Australia and Queensland. Jason Di Cicco is the founder and director of JDC Performing Arts Studios, which has studios in his home suburb and Werribee. The 26-year-old was acquainted with Sarah, who grew up in Sunshine, before she found fame on the first season of ’The Voice’. Sarah was a vocal coach at JDC before she hit the big-time on television. Although Mr Di Cicco knew Sarah before she became a household name, he said he was surprised to receive a call ask-

ing him to choreograph and cast dancers in her latest shows. “I thought it was fantastic, I said yes and I was booked on the spot,” Mr Di Cicco said. In October last year, he held an open-call audition in Werribee which was attended by just under 100 dancers. Mr Di Cicco selected five to perform in Ms De Bono’s tour. “It’s going to be a very commercial and upbeat show,” he said. “Sarah and her manager are easy to work with, the dancers are great and quick learners and pick up choreography straight away.” On Australia Day, he and the other dancers will perform at the Adelaide Festival Centre. During March, they will fly

to Brisbane for a show where Ms De Bono headlines the bill alongside the Potbelleez and Boy George. Mr Di Cicco said he has devoted his life to dancing since his first jazz class at the age of 10. “From the first class I knew I wanted to be a dancer, choreographer and have my own performing arts studio,” he said. He hopes to introduce others to the magic of dance with a week of free open classes at JDC studios from 3 to 8 February, for two years olds to adults. Roll up for the ringmaster By ALESHA CAPONE DEER Park resident Cameron Tougher always dreamed of a career on stage but never thought he would join the circus. However the 24-year-old ringmaster has been recruited to present a spectacular show in front of up to 400 people every night, under the lights at Circus Latino. The circus will be playing in Werribee until 27 January. Before he became ringmaster, Mr Tougher was volunteering in community theatre and working two jobs including one at the 234 Fun Galore indoor entertainment centre in Braybrook. Around two months ago, Circus Latino performers visited the centre and started chatting to Mr Tougher, who told them about his favourite past-times - including fire-twirling, clowning and announcing. The performers invited Mr

Tougher see to their show in Burnside, where their tricks and stunts left him “in awe”. He was later invited backstage and asked to audition his announcing skills in front of the circus owner another day. Mr Tougher ended up doing shows across that weekend, announcing acts from backstage. Since then, he has been the official Circus Latino ringmaster . “I’ve kind-of literally run away with the circus,” Mr Tougher said. “To be honest with you, my favourite part is the rush of being on stage in front of a crowd and making sure everything’s running right and on time.” Circus Latino will be at Werribee Plaza in the Heaths Rd car park on Wednesday and Thursday at 7.30pm, Friday and Saturday at 7.30 pm and 11am and Sunday and Monday 11am. The program sets children up to naturally progress into the Royal Academy of Dance classical ballet syllabus to continue their dance education for either recreational or vocational endeavours. Steps also offers theatrical classes in jazz/funk, tap, hip hop and contemporary dance.

To mark the beginning of its 15th year of operation, Angelina Ballerina will be visiting the Yarraville studio on Sunday 2 March. All enrolled students will have the opportunity to meet Angelina, do a short ballet class with her and have their photograph taken. Talking Turkey Hope you had lovely, indulgent Christmas Day. While the celebrations might only last a day, Christmas leftovers certainly make sure the festive spirit lives on … and on. They’re the gift that keeps on giving! On Christmas Day in our house, we barely seemed to make a dent on the leg of ham we had in our fridge (which happened to be the size of Brazil), so I had to get creative. I chopped up thick slices to make special fried rice, which my eight year old son adores. Our other solution was to buy lovely loaves of sourdough bread and Swiss cheese slices from the supermarket deli and have ham and Swiss cheese toasties. But others were much more creative than me. My friend Kylea (who married into a big Italian family) says “I made aranchini balls with cut up leftover ham, fried up so it tasted like smoked bacon.” Ann Marie used her leftover turkey to make turkey noodle soup with

somen noodles, soy sauce, fresh ginger, lemongrass and baby spinach: “Kids love this and it only takes seven minutes to make.” Emily’s Turkey Bake involved slapping turkey, stuffing and leftover vegies into a baking dish, topping it with gravy and crisping it up in the oven. Simon whipped up a mean ham and roast vegie frittata. While Carlie says “My great aunt made turkey pie the next day, and put the leftover roast vegies into a pureed soup plus a minestrone. And there was STILL food!” I’d love to hear what creative things you did with your Christmas leftovers. It might give us all a head start on this year’s Christmas celebrations! WERRIBEE Hockey Club will embark on its 2014 senior campaign with new coaches at the helm in both men’s and women’s competitions. Ryan Tout has replaced Cam Wyatt as men’s coach, while Geoff Peacock will lead the women, replacing Les McAlinden. Tout will be taking over a Tigers outfit that finished seventh in Vic League One last year despite collecting nine wins and four draws from 22 games. Club president Tim Pickersgill said he hopes Tout will be able to draw on his experience with Premier League club Footscray in his new role with Werribee. “We’re really looking to gain some experience and to bring some of that culture to the club,” Pickersgill said. “In regards to the men, we’re looking to certainly improve on our great efforts last year and consolidate our position in Vic League One and hopefully make finals.” McAlinden led Werribee’s women to the finals in Vic League Two last year. HOPPERS Crossing resident Laura Giles is preparing herself to take on the world. The 21-year-old has been selected to represent Australia at the Under 21 Indoor Netball World Cup. Giles, who has been a frequent Victorian representative throughout her career, was selected following an outstanding National Championships. “I was playing for Victoria in a nationals tournament and I was selected from there,” she explained. “The announcement was made at a presentation night. We had all the teams from all the states there and they just read it out at the night. “It was pretty crazy and I was absolutely shocked. I was just thinking, really, me? “This is my first Australian team. Last year, when I played as well, I was selected but I was only an emergency player then.” The World Cup will begin in late May and goes for three weeks. Giles, who plays goal keeper, will travel with her Australian team-mates to South Africa for the tournament and take on the might of the host nation as well as New Zealand and England. “I guess it is very much a learning experience for my self and I am just hoping to be able to play as good as I can,” she said. “It’s still a bit surreal. I don’t think it will hit home until I actually go to play.”

Ahead of the pack AFTER a week of 40-plus temperatures, the Footscray Cycling Club’s Max Campbell Memorial was held in cool and overcast conditions at Altona’s Drake Boulevard on Sunday. Conditions provided a perfect day to honour a man who raced and volunteered at the FCC for over 50 years in rain, hail or shine. The A Grade race was over as soon as it began with a casual Adrian Hanson rolling off the front of the bunch on the first lap, only to be joined by Dom Dudkiewicz. The pair rode off into the distance and were never reeled in. Dudkiewicz has been in unbeatable form of late but was still surprised that such an early two-man breakaway survived. “We started the race and I saw Adrian Hanson and Jason Costin just riding, not attacking off the front, and then we got around the top corner and I saw Adrian just casually increasing the distance from the bunch. “I was about to jump when Adrian went, so as I went past Adrian I said ’let’s do this’. So he got on my wheel. “We cut a really hard couple of laps and probably got 20 seconds on the bunch and then we just kept going. “I think the first few laps averaged 46-odd kilometres an hour. I thought that it was too early as we had to do this for over an hour but we just kept working and kept the lead at about 30 seconds.” In the final laps, behind the dynamic duo, the situation could only be described as carnage, with attacks breaking the bunch up into broken lines of riders, with Graham Carlson trying to bridge the gap or at least ensure third place. Dudkiewicz came out of the last corner and passed Hanson, taking the win with Hanson a few bike lengths behind, followed by a lonely Carlson who took third place. In other results, Trevor Perry claimed the B Grade race while Gerard Zammit and Vladimir Djric were victorious in C Grade and D Grade respectively.

Cream of the crop By LIAM TWOMEY OUTSTANDING athletes from Melbourne’s Western Suburbs have contributed to making the 2012/13 Don Deeble Rising Star Award one of the most impressive in its history. With nominations for the cycle beginning in June 2012, the Don Deeble Rising Star Award has been presented to 16 athletes from all corners of the West who have achieved outstanding results at a state or national level. From the 16 nominees, a total of 13 sports were also represented including volleyball, cricket, hockey, netball and football. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and is sponsored by the Yarraville Club

Cricket Club. Each month, one nominee receives $1000 towards achieving their sporting goals while at the award’s grand final, the overall winner is given $5000. On top of that, this year will see three runners-up each receive $2000. After hours of deliberation by award organisers, the finalists for the award are Aaron Wain (taekwondo), Dejan Vasiljevic (basketball), Morgan Mitchell (athletics) and Nathan Pellissier (table tennis). All four young athletes have not only reached an incredibly high level of results at a state level but have also progressed to national and international competition. was rapt with the calibre of nominees. “The standard this year has been very high and very even,” Watson said. “We have a hard job in deciding the placegetters with this year’s lot having more depth to their talents.” The overall winner will be announced on Wednesday 29 January. Also on the night, former AFL player and coach David Parkin will be the guest speaker for the event. Previous winners of the Don Deeble Rising Star Award have included rising Australian basketball stars Rachel Jarry and Dante Exum, national women’s hockey member Danielle Schubach and cycling star Kendelle Hodges while current Australian Women’s Ashes representative Jess Cameron and AFL

Cats’ slim lifeline By ADEM SARICAOGLU HOPPERS Crossing must win its remaining three games to stay in the hunt for a finals berth in Senior Division Turf Cricket. The Cats remain stranded in ninth position on the table, but are only six points outside the top four and remain one of six clubs vying to fill the fourth and final spot in the four by season’s end - currently occupied by Bentleigh. Hoppers Crossing helped its cause with a tight eight-run win away to St Bernard’s over the weekend, but that result will count for nothing if it is not backed up in the upcoming two-dayer at home to second-placed South Caulfield. “I’m raring to go, and everyone is really pumped,” Hoppers Crossing captain-coach Darrel Brown told Star on Sunday.

“Yesterday’s game was a big psychological thing for us. “I think if we’d lost yesterday, with the young guys that we have, you would’ve seen a few shoulders drop.” The Cats have only won three games so far this summer compared to South Caulfield’s seven. However, Brown feels a victory at home against one of the Senior Division’s premiership contenders this coming fortnight should set the Cats up nicely to make a run at the top four in the final month of the home-and-away season. “South Caulfield is the benchmark,” he said. “They’ve been playing very well, and if we beat them this week it sends a big statement to the rest of the teams. “The guys just have to come out

and prove themselves, and if we do that against South Caulfield, I’ll tell you what, there’s no doubt in my mind we’d be playing finals. “We just have to win the next three games. They are absolutely crucial.” On Saturday the Cats just managed to scrape their way home in their final onedayer of the summer, successfully keeping St Bernard’s to 8/202 in defending their all-out 210. Brown said he was pleased with his side’s effort with both bat and ball at St Bernard’s Murphy Oval. “I think it was probably one of our best performances as a team for the season,” Brown said. “Everyone stepped up, if not with the bat then with the ball and in the field, so I was pretty pleased with that performance.”

FOOTSCRAY Edgewater remains on top of the Premier Cricket ladder after a comprehensive victory against Melbourne Uni on Saturday. After a dominant day one, the Bulldogs travelled to University Oval for the second half of the match needing just 172 for victory. Resuming in the middle were Bulldogs’ captain Dean Russ and Lucas Dredge but not everything went to plan for Footscray. After adding 22 runs to the total Russ was bowled by Steven Reid for 35. That brought Travis Dean to the crease with the middle order batsman combining with Dredge to produce a match winning partnership. The pair added 111 for the third wicket to guide Footscray to 2/189. Despite the lopsided nature of the scorecard, the Melbourne Uni bowlers continued to fight with gun leg spinner Fawad Ahmed causing the most problems.

After Dredge was finally dismissed for an impressive 66, Dean followed just six runs later for 61. But the double strike did nothing to slow the Bulldogs down with Dylan Kight and Shanuka Dissanayaka taking Footscray to the win for the loss of just four wickets. Kight went on to make 40 not out while Dissanayaka finished the innings unbeaten on 64. The match was eventually stopped in the 93rd over with Footscray at 4/302. On what was a tough day for the fielding side, Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers and finished with the figures of 2/64 off 33 overs. Saturday’s results has Footscray three points clear of the second-placed Melbourne on the Premier Cricket ladder. St Kilda is in third spot with 46 points. Round 15 of the Premier Cricket season continues this weekend with the Bulldogs taking on Northcote in a two-day encounter.

A GREAT man once said: “A week is a long time in football” and he was right. Last week I wrote that Deer Park premiership player Shannon Broadbent had been the subject of social media in regards to his exclusion from the WRFL Interleague squad. He was originally left out as the selectors thought he was not playing in the WRFL in 2014. He was contacted and assured the selectors he was definitely playing at Deer Park so they included him in the squad as you would expect of the 2013 Barry Priest Medallist. Last week Shannon signed to play with Tatura for the 2014 season. The newspaper reports that I read were very strong that money was a big factor in the decision. I have no issue with Shannon getting well paid for what he brings to a club, good on him. If clubs want to go down that track, that is their choice. My concern, as it has been for many years, is the culture and expectation we are showing the young players coming through. If it is all about money then grassroots footy is doomed. I don’t back away from that and if you think differently please let me know your thoughts. I look at my eight-yearold son who wants to play footy, he does not know about it as an occupation, he just loves the game. It would be very sad if we lost that. Let me know what you think.
