Beach thefts on rise By YASEMIN TALAT
No better time for barbie
IT’S time to put on your thongs, throw another snag on the barbie and enjoy the serenity. Australia Day is on this Sunday. There are plenty of events on across the West for you to enjoy and celebrate our great nation. Siblings, from left, Petra, Alex and Marcus Hansby got a head-start on celebrations last week. A STRING of thefts at Williamstown and Altona beaches has prompted warnings for beach-goers. Police are warning beach-goers to be mindful of their possessions and not bring valuables to the beach or leave their things unattended. “What we’ve got a problem with is that people leave their valuables unattended on the beach while they go for a swim,” Sergeant Dean Howard from Altona North Police Station said. “We want people to take more care of their stuff.” Mobile phones and bags are hot property for thieves who watch and wait and seize the opportunities to steal. A dedicated crime impact team has been tasked this summer to patrol the beaches to limit thefts and curb any antisocial behaviour. Both plain clothes and uniformed police patrol the beaches on foot and in vehicles to combat these crimes. The team was out in full force again last week as thousands flocked to the beach to embrace Melbourne’s heatwave. And as the heat soared so did the number of thefts, with stolen property reports filed to police each day. Mobile phones, bags, wallets and credit cards were all among the stolen property. Sgt Howard has urged people to
be mindful when leaving their possession unattened; reminding them that if they wouldn’t leave their phone or bags unattended at Chapel St or other public places then they should not leave their valuables unattended at the beach either. He also warned that hiding phones under towels or in bags was not sufficient and the valuables could still be targeted. “People are watching, they watch you hide your phones and they watch you go into the water and then go get it,” he said. “Unless you have someone remaining with your personal items on the beach, don’t bring them to the beach.” A staggering 10 mobile phones were stolen from underneath the Altona Pier within 30 minutes on 2 December, one of the first of the summer offences. A female offender was processed by the Altona Crime Impact team for a handful of thefts. Sgt Howard said people needed to be actively aware and not bring their valuables to the beach to avoid being a victim. Anti-social behaviour was also being tackled by the team, with this type of behaviour at the beaches now at a low. “There has been less crime and significantly less antisocial behaviour this summer,” Sgt Howard said.

TEMPERATURES soared last week as Melbourne experienced its first heatwave for the summer. The heat spell started last Monday and continued through to Friday with temperatures reaching up to a scorching 44 degrees. Beach-goers from near and far flocked to Hobsons Bay beaches and parks to embrace summer’s offerings. And Williamstown and Altona beach were the top hot spots for the hundreds of people, like three year old Tresor (pictured), trying to keep cool. Temperatures are expected to drop this week, welcoming a cool change. 112833 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI

HEALTH experts have warned that excessive alcohol consumption is not the best way to cool off during hot summer days. Experts from Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre have urged communities to keep up their water intake to remain hydrated over summer. Turning Point director Professor Dan Lubman said it was important people were aware of the dehydrating effects of alcohol. “Contrary to their image as thirst quenchers, beer and other alcoholic drinks are diuretics, disrupting our kidney’s ability to maintain hydration. This is the last thing you need on a stinking hot day,” Prof Lubman said. Prof Lubman said with Australia Day also around the corner, it was important that people heeded the alcohol safety message. “Our previous research has indicated a significant increase in alcohol intoxication cases on the day preceding most public holidays, with young people and Australia Day of particular concern,” Prof Lubman said. “While we’re not about stopping people having fun, we would ask people be wary of how much they are drinking and look after their mates.”

Resigned for union By YASEMIN TALAT HOBSONS BAY Wetlands ward councillor and former Deputy Mayor Luba Grigorovitch has resigned from council to concentrate on her new position as a union State Secretary. Cr Grigorovitch was appointed to the position of State Secretary of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union in November last year following the retirement of its former head Trevor Dobbyn. At 28, she made history as the first woman and youngest ever person to step up to the role as state secretary of the 8000 member RTBU. Cr Grigorovitch said the unexpected career shift meant she could no longer fully dedicate her time to the Hobsons Bay community. “It wasn’t a decision that I made
easily but I feel that it’s the right thing to do by the community,” Cr Grigorovitch said. “The job expects me to perform 150 per cent and therefore I just wouldn’t be able to do the council or the community justice,” she said. “I really want to stay on as councillor, I love my team and we’ve got a great group, but I don’t think it’s the right thing by the community because my heart and soul would be dedicated to the union,” she said. During her time on council, Cr Grigorovitch was also a former Deputy Mayor and was elected on the board of the Victorian Local Government Association. She is also the Hobsons Bay Women’s Charter Champion and established the Women’s Advisory Com-
Hobsons Bay Councillor Luba Grigorovitch. 86062 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT mittee to give local women a stronger voice. Cr Grigorovitch said the highlight of her time in council had been advocating for the minority groups. “Whether it is women, homeless
youth, or youth or homeless people, I’m not afraid to speak out and I’ve always fought for equal funding down my neck of the woods, so I’m quite proud of my time on council,” she said. Cr Grigorovitch said being a councillor was immensely rewarding and wanted to thank the community for voting for her. “It’s been an honour and privilege to serve as councillor for the last five and half years and I would like to thank the voters for having the confidence in me to fulfil this duty,” she said. The Victorian Electoral Commission will conduct a count back on previous election results to fill the vacancy, in accordance with the Local Government Act.
Celebrate what’s great in land of Oz ALTONA residents are gearing up for an unforgettable Australia Day Celebration over the weekend. Australia Day in Altona has fast become a popular annual event and will be held again this Sunday at Logan Reserve and the Altona Foreshore. Organised by the Altona Traders and sponsored by the Altona Community Bank, the event will be the only community Australia Day event in Hobsons Bay. The day will have activities for ev-
eryone to enjoy including a live band, junior and senior triathlons, market stalls, children’s workshops and Cobb &Co coach rides amongst other activities showcasing everything Altona has to offer. Altona Community Bank marketing co-ordinator Sarah Stapleton said the Community Bank was proud to sponsor the fireworks display and popular annual Australia Day Family Sand Sculpture competition on Altona Beach. “We have two sessions on beautiful Altona beach and families can come down and get creative and build
something exciting,” Ms Stapleton said. “We’ve had some amazing works in previous years including tall ships, lots of Australia Day flags and sea creatures.” The Family Sand Sculpture Competition prizes will be awarded to the most imaginative teams per session with $150, $75 and $25 Altona Community Bank accounts for the first, second and third prize winning teams respectively. The two competition sessions will be held from 11am-noon and another from 1pm-2pm. Registration forms
By YASEMIN TALAT WITH summer in full swing and the sunburn from last week’s heatwave still fresh, motorists are being reminded not to leave children and pets unattended in cars. RACV road user behaviour manager Melinda Congiu said RACV patrols had already rescued 48 children and pets from locked cars since 1 January. “Last year, 1489 children were removed from locked vehicles by RACV patrols; while a further 453 animals also rescued,” Ms Congiu said. “Locking anyone in a car, especially a vulnerable child, is extremely dangerous and unacceptable.” Ms Congiu said the dangers of leaving children locked in a car were life-threatening and warned parents to avoid it, even with a window open. “In days of high temperature, the interior of a stationary vehicle, even when parked in the shade, can become a death trap with temperatures skyrocketing to a lethal 60 degrees within minutes, regardless of whether windows are left open or not,” she said. “It can only take a few minutes for a child locked in a car with that temperature to become seriously ill or die due to heatstroke or dehydration,” Ms Congiu said. “Young children are more sensitive to heat than older children or adults as their body temperature can rise three to five times faster.” “There is never a safe time to leave children in the car.” The RACV has produced a short video that demonstrates how quickly temperatures can rise in parked cars. It can be viewed at facebook.com/RACV. For more road safety tips visit racv.com.au/roadsafety

are available from the Altona Community Bank and numbers are limited so get in fast. “The Community Bank is owned by the community, our profits go back into the community so we like to do things for the whole community to enjoy and get the community together,” Ms Stapleton said. During the past 13 years Altona, Point Cook and Laverton/Altona Meadows Community Bank branches have injected more than $2.7 million into their communities.
PHOTOS taken by a passer-by of suspicious activity have lead police to arrest two people for attempted burglary. The vigilant passer-by witnessed the attempted burglary at a residence. Their photos helped Hobsons Bay detectives arrest a man and woman from Williamstown. The pair, aged in their early 20s, were arrested and bailed to appear before the courts in early May last Monday. “It’s this kind of information from our local community that really assists police, so if you see something, say something,” police said. Residents are reminded to call triplezero for police if they witness a crime in progress or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any crime-related information.

Landlord woe By YASEMIN TALAT HOBSONS BAY property investors were hit with big bills last financial year, with tenants costing landlords thousands of dollars in malicious damage and rental defaults. RACV Insurances figures highlighted the high costs to landlords across the Western Suburbs, with malicious damage and rental defaults sitting among the top claims lodged by members with landlord insurance. Hobsons Bay had only 30 claims over the period but had the highest average claim cost of $7444. Wyndham was the Western
Melbourne municipality with the highest number of claims with 169, closely followed by Brimbank with 165. The average claim costs for these municipalities were $3410 and 6883 respectively. Melton Shire was not too far behind with 122 claims averaging at $5840. RACV Manager Personal Insurance, Phil James said the average claim costs demonstrated the financial impact property damage or lost rental income could have. RACV members with landlord insurance lodged more than 2000 claims state wide between 1 July 2012 and 30 June
2013, with RACV paying out a total of almost $10.6 million. Mr James said other common claims included storm damage, water damage to investment properties, burglary and fire. “In addition to tenants causing damage, landlords also must consider the cost of natural disasters, such as storms, floods and fires and how not having adequate insurance cover could seriously hurt their investment return,” Mr James said. “Landlords should ensure they protect their investment by having the right type of policy in place and know what they are covered for,” he said.
Critters invade library By YASEMIN TALAT THINGS got a little bit wild at Hobsons Bay libraries last week when wild life animals, reptiles and insects dropped in for a visit. Andrew Wegener from Australian Wildlife Lectures showcased the animals at Altona North Community Library and The Environment Resource Centre at Altona Library for families to enjoy. The event, which was organised by Hobsons Bay Council and sponsored by Mobil Altona Refinery, was part of the 2014 Summer by the Sea program, aimed to encourage the community to appreciate the coastal environment and wildlife. “These types of free events are important to educate our community on the importance of looking after our native animals and to understand the pressures they may face by living in an increasingly urban environment,” Hobsons Bay Mayor Sandra Wilson said. The popular event gave residents a chance to get up close with native Australian wildlife with live and preserved reptiles, spiders, mini beasts, birds and mammals on display. “Some people enjoy getting up close and holding the animals, particularly the reptiles, while others prefer to observe them from the comfort of their glass safety tanks,” Cr Wilson said. “Andrew Wegener from Australian Wildlife Lectures shares his knowledge, enthusiasm and respect for the many varied and

Keys to play By YASEMIN TALAT INTERNATIONAL street piano art project Play Me, I’m Yours has landed in Altona. The international project features an array of ‘Street Pianos’ installed in different locations across cities around the world encouraging communities to engage. It has been described as a “musical equivalent of Facebook” with Street Pianos a resource for the public to express themselves. The Arts Centre Melbourne has presented Play Me, I’m Yours to Melburnians with the installation of 25 Street Pianos around inner and outer Melbourne to inspire spontaneous playing. Melbourne Art Centre’s Creative Producer for the project Patrick Cronin said it was the perfect project to connect people and communities. “The Arts Centre wants to offer a variety of ways to connect, such as connecting through creative practice out in your own area like Altona,” Mr Cronin said. The project has already been to 37 cities across the world from New York to London, Barcelona to Paris and now can be experienced at Logan Reserve in Altona. “It takes people out of their everyday experience,” Mr Cronin said. “People are often walking to work, or walking along trying to escape the heat and all of sudden they hear a piano being

An extra touch of community was added to the Altona piano with its decoration done by residents at the Wood Street Arts Space in Laverton. The pianos are located around the Melbourne Arts Centre and the CBD as well as in Coburg, Dandenong and Altona until Monday 27 January. Leyla Simone, 12, has published her first book called The Adventures of Lollipop – a story she will share with everyone by donating it to all the local libraries. 112932 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT
Leyla’s on a colourful journey By YASEMIN TALAT WHAT started as a bedtime story for one little girl has now become a children’s book for all. At only 12 years of age, Williamstown resident Leyla Simone has published her very first book. Leyla’s imagination and storytelling at bedtime inspired the book called Adventures of Lollipop, which will soon be available at selected local book stores in Yarraville and will be donated to libraries across Hobsons Bay. The book is about a colourful unisus, a cross between a unicorn and Pegasus, who goes on a journey to find her true colour.
“I loved horses and Pegasus and unicorns so I decided to make it into one character and make it into a story with a big adventure with flying and magic in a mythical world,” Leyla said. “And I wanted to make it into a book so everyone could read it because it was a really interesting story,” she said. Leyla said the character, Lollipop, reflected her as she too was going on her own journey. “I’m on my journey, I’m going to high school this year and I’m going to have new adventures as I grow up,” she said. “And I’m finding my inner self.”
Leyla’s mother Jade said the story was based on the Chakra System, the seven energy senses of the body, and would introduce children to learning about the physical, spiritual and energetic dynamics of the body. “It’s a spiritual journey about finding yourself and who you are on the inside as a person, and the colour is the energy centre of your body,” she said. “Leyla’s a very well rounded, really calm and collected kind of a 12-year-old and she has a really good understanding of what’s going and how to deal with things,” she said. “This lovely pop character is basically a representation of her.”

Hope you had lovely, indulgent Christmas Day. While the celebrations might only last a day, Christmas leftovers certainly make sure the festive spirit lives on … and on. They’re the gift that keeps on giving! On Christmas Day in our house, we barely seemed to make a dent on the leg of ham we had in our fridge (which happened to be the size of Brazil), so I had to get creative. I chopped up thick slices to make special fried rice, which my eight year old son adores. Our other solution was to buy lovely loaves of sourdough bread and Swiss cheese slices from the supermarket deli and have ham and Swiss cheese toasties. But others were much more creative than me. My friend Kylea (who married into a big Italian family) says “I made aranchini balls with cut up leftover ham, fried up so it tasted like smoked bacon.” Ann Marie used her leftover turkey to make turkey noodle soup with
somen noodles, soy sauce, fresh ginger, lemongrass and baby spinach: “Kids love this and it only takes seven minutes to make.” Emily’s Turkey Bake involved slapping turkey, stuffing and leftover vegies into a baking dish, topping it with gravy and crisping it up in the oven. Simon whipped up a mean ham and roast vegie frittata. While Carlie says “My great aunt made turkey pie the next day, and put the leftover roast vegies into a pureed soup plus a minestrone. And there was STILL food!” I’d love to hear what creative things you did with your Christmas leftovers. It might give us all a head start on this year’s Christmas celebrations! Email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au I’m also keen to know what kitchen gadgets Santa left in your stocking – my husband is now the proud owner of a nifty little device called the Slap Chop. You just put a few vegies under it, slap the top down a couple of times and voila – instant salad!

DB: I don’t know about signature dish, but I like cooking up marinated ribs on the Weber or firing up the spit-roaster with a pig or lamb. Help can be here in a dash IT won’t be all green and gold this Australia Day, as the MS Colour Dash takes over the Docklands in a sea of colour and excitement for the inaugural 5km fun run. The Ms Colour Dash is part of the official program of events for Australia Day in Victoria, and is a non-profit event organised to raise much-needed funds for the 23,000 Australians living with multiple sclerosis. Williamstown resident Roula Kfoury, who was diagnosed with MS in 2008 when she was just 24, will take part in the event joined by a team of her family and friends.
“The good thing about these events is that they give a little profile on what MS is and it helps makes people aware of the illness,” Ms Kfoury said. Ms Kfoury is no stranger to the MS events, she has taken part in the MS walk and fun run for the last seven years and last year received an award recognising her for her generous donations. “I definitely think it’s a very high priority and I always try and donate as much as I can,” she said. “Raising money for something like this actually works in our favour and we are getting better and better medication as a result.”
Ms Kfoury has suffered the effects of MS having experienced five episodes over the last six years, three of which were in the first year of her diagnosis. The episodes included loss of vision in her left eye and loss of feeling in her arms or legs which meant she could not walk. And after each episode Ms Kfoury would be back in hospital, sometimes taking her up to a month to recover. She also had no choice but to quit her job and take time out to adjust to life with MS. ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES AND GIVE BLOOD IN WERRIBEE
One in three Australians may need blood or blood products at some point in their lives.

THE Australian Red Cross Blood Service is entrusted with the supply of Australia’s blood. The service centre collects, processes and distributes lifesaving blood products. It also delivers world class research and provides expertise in diagnostic, transplantation and other clinical services. Australia needs blood 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The ongoing challenge is to ensure that blood products are efficiently collected and sup-
plied at the right time and of the best quality to meet demand. The Werribee Blood Donor Centre is open six days per week and it is supported by the local residents that generously give up their time to donate blood. Red Cross Blood Service spokesperson Stephanie Reynolds says giving blood is a precious contribution to a wider cause. “One in three Australians will require blood or a blood product at some stage in their
life, whereas only one in 30 Australians give blood. “Giving blood only takes about one hour and it can help save three lives.” To make an appointment or for more information call 13 14 95 or visit www.donateblood. com.au. Maiden tri-race series A NEW tri-race series will hit the bay this summer with cash prizes to be won. The inaugural Top of the Bay series will feature two of Williamstown’s popular open water swims when it kicks off next weekend. The ‘swim-athon’ will launch on Australia Day at Williamstown beach with the Williamstown Swimming and Lifesavers Club’s annual one and two kilometre swims. The event, which is in its 24th year, will welcome back swimmers who have taken part annually, and swimmers from as young as 12 years old have also jumped on board. The second event of the tri series will be the Rotary’s an-
nual Jalna Big Bay Swim on 23 February. Marathon swimmer and English Channel conqueror Chloe McCardel is the ambassador for the Jalna Big Bay Swim, which is a 3.2 kilometre swim from Port Melbourne to Williamstown. And the final event will be a new event on the calendar, the inaugural Melbourne Swim Classic, which will be held at St Kilda beach on 1 March. “It’s attractive for all age groups and all levels of fitness, there’s no pressure on the athletes it’s just giving them the opportunity to do their best,” Series Event organiser Simone Trigger said. Cash prizes will be awarded to a male and female in the age categories of over 35 and over

Ms Trigger said the Top of the Bay series would give swimmers an opportunity to embrace and enjoy a series in the local area, without travelling elsewhere. She encouraged anyone thinking of giving the swims a go to take on the opportunity. “It’s a challenge to swim across the bay and it’s only once a year you get the opportunity to do it,” Ms Trigger said. “Once you come across the line, it’s a great personal achievement.” For more information or to register, visit www.bigbayswim.com.au

THOSE would-be dancers who have two left feet, have no rhythm and would rather be a wall flower should consider salsa. Salsa dancing is completely inclusive and is suitable for anyone regardless of age, or level of ability. There is also a fantastic range of benefits gained from this dance. Music and dance have been a part of many different cultures for centuries. It has always been a part of celebration, ritual, exercise, communication and pleasure and whether they knew it or not way back when the dancing began, the health benefits were, and still are enormous. Latin dance is a great way

to develop new social relationships. In Latin America, salsa dancing is a massive part of the culture and its social life. Within an established class setting, if the group of students are always the same, a natural understanding develops over time. Based on the fact that while exercising together people discover an instinctive way to communicate with body language. Dancing is actually a way to express feelings, emotions, personality, thoughts and is consequently a very direct instrument to develop new friendships. If the group is harmonic, it often happens that people decide to go out together to a salsa event
or other places other than the regular classes. Come along, make new friends and see new places! Salsa is a great form of exercise. Salsa dancing is a unique form of exercise because it provides the heart-healthy benefits of an aerobic exercise while also allowing participants to engage in a social activity. Among its benefits, salsa builds endurance and stamina, helps with weight loss and on average burning off 420 or more calories per hour. Dancing can burn more calories an hour than riding a bike or swimming. It also relieves stress, helps release toxins and greatly increase overall fitness and general wellbeing.

Angelina Ballerina Classes for students aged three to six years focus on dance education and child development and psychology.
1102668-EP4-14
STEPS Studios is an all-inclusive dance school that offers dance education and fun for a variety of ages and levels of ability and interest. It has everything from important early childhood development classes, integration of special needs students and those with learning difficulties, to advanced level classes for the vocationally minded student. Dance brings its students many benefits. It helps to develop self-confidence in extremely shy individuals and the cognitive and motor skill development of young children, through to the achievement of career aspirations. Steps student Madison Lu, at the age of eight, made her professional theatre debut as Molly in the Melbourne production of Annie at the Regent Theatre. Through movement, dance provides an opportunity for artistic, creative and personal expression, physical exercise and the development of musicality, positive discipline, self-confidence and psychological and neurological benefits which all assist academic studies and personal development. The curriculum begins with Angelina Ballerina Classes for students aged three to six years with a focus on dance education and child development and psychology. Research has proved that learning dance is instrumental in the development of social, emotional, physical and cognitive needs of this age group. A child’s first seven years are critical in the development of cognitive/neural, motor, socioemotional and language development. Steps provides an active learning environment through its early childhood Angelina Ballerina Dance Program which is safe, effective, developmentally appropriate and fun! The program sets children up to naturally progress into the Royal Academy of Dance classical ballet syllabus to continue their dance education for either recreational or vocational endeavours. Steps also offers theatrical classes in jazz/funk,

Crunch time for Aces By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Melbourne Aces may be sitting second-last coming into the final weekend of the Australian Baseball League regular season, but they still remain in the hunt for postseason action. The 20-22 Aces are one of four clubs log-jammed in the middle of the ABL table, with Adelaide (21-21), Sydney (21-21) and Canberra (2022) all vying to fill the remaining two spots up for grabs in the top three. Over the weekend the Aces managed to split their four-game series 2-2 with the Brisbane Bandits at the Altona Ballpark, keeping them-

selves alive with four more games to come on the road this weekend against the third-placed Sydney Blue Sox. Manager Phil Dale is confident his Aces can easily bounce back after dropping the final game of the Brisbane series 4-2 on Sunday. “We match up with anyone in this league and we’re as good a team as anyone, so on any given day we can beat any other team,” Dale said. “We’ve just got to win every game we can now.” Melbourne’s final home series of the regular season began in disappointing fashion on Thursday
night with a 6-4 loss to the Bandits. However the following two outings over the next two nights proved to be more fortunate for the Aces. On Friday, Aces shortstop Brad Harman made a hero of himself at the end of a gruelling 13-inning encounter, firing a two-run homer over left field to hand Melbourne a memorable 4-2 win. As though that wasn’t enough, Harman then did it again the following night in the bottom of the eighth, scoring another clutch home run to get his Aces over the line 5-3. Sunday’s game was also on the line in the bottom of the eighth, with Melbourne looking to go ahead with
bases loaded and only one out. However, two consecutive strikeouts kept the final score to 4-2 in Brisbane’s favour. While Harman’s hitting at the plate was a feature of the series, Dale was also keen to praise relief pitcher Brett Zawacki - who on Friday shut Brisbane out in the final four innings. “I used him in an unusual lot of innings, which he’s not used to and that took him out of the game today (Sunday), but he did a great job to get the win (on Friday),” Dale said. Melbourne’s do-or-die series with Sydney begins this Thursday night.
Maynard makes the difference By LIAM TWOMEY

A BRILLIANT 81 from Aaron Maynard guided Altona to an impressive win against Bayswater in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association on Saturday. The A’s were set 197 for victory after Bayswater won the toss and chose to bat at Frank Kirk Oval. Before he could do any damage with the bat, Maynard made his presence felt with the ball, taking 2/36 from nine overs to be the pick of the Altona bowlers. He was well supported by Andrew McCammond (1/31) and Lee Elmore (1/24). The run chase got off to a solid start for Altona with opening pair Adam Brown and Timothy Collins laying a solid base. The pair added 39 for the first wicket before Collins was joined in the middle by Maynard. Altona was then able to take control of the match with the first wicket partnership guiding the score to 1/108. Despite the back-to-back loss of Collins and middle order batsman
Craig Duff, Altona remained in control. The A’s secured the win in the 41st over for the loss of just four wickets. Maynard’s score of 81 not out continues what has been a brilliant season for the number three batsman. Maynard sits on top of VSDCA east/west run scores list with 420 runs for the year at an average of 70. Saturday’s result is Altona’s fifth win of the season and moves the A’s into fifth spot on the VSDCA ladder. When round 10 kicks of this weekend, Altona will take on Box Hill. Also on the weekend, Williamstown secured its second win of the year after defeating Endeavour Hills. The Seagulls were set 145 for victory and reached the target for the loss of just one wicket. In other VSDCA results, Mount Waverley defeated Melton, Werribee got the better of Croydon, Sunshine fell to Noble Park and Yarraville came up short against Box Hill.

Star… Connecting people with the local sport they love.
Cream of the crop By LIAM TWOMEY OUTSTANDING athletes from Melbourne’s Western Suburbs have contributed to making the 2012/13 Don Deeble Rising Star Award one of the most impressive in its history. With nominations for the cycle beginning in June 2012, the Don Deeble Rising Star Award has been presented to 16 athletes from all corners of the West who have achieved outstanding results at a state or national level. From the 16 nominees, a total of 13 sports were also represented including volleyball, cricket, hockey, netball and football. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and is sponsored by the Yarraville Club
Cricket Club. Each month, one nominee receives $1000 towards achieving their sporting goals while at the award’s grand final, the overall winner is given $5000. On top of that, this year will see three runners-up each receive $2000. After hours of deliberation by award organisers, the finalists for the award are Aaron Wain (taekwondo), Dejan Vasiljevic (basketball), Morgan Mitchell (athletics) and Nathan Pellissier (table tennis). All four young athletes have not only reached an incredibly high level of results at a state level but have also progressed to national and international competition. Sunshine Western Region Sports Club vice-resident Barry Watson
was rapt with the calibre of nominees. “The standard this year has been very high and very even,” Watson said. “We have a hard job in deciding the placegetters with this year’s lot having more depth to their talents.” The overall winner will be announced on Wednesday 29 January. Also on the night, former AFL player and coach David Parkin will be the guest speaker for the event. Previous winners of the Don Deeble Rising Star Award have included rising Australian basketball stars Rachel Jarry and Dante Exum, national women’s hockey member Danielle Schubach and cycling star Kendelle Hodges while current Australian Women’s Ashes representative Jess Cameron and AFL
footballer Bachar Houli were also monthly nominees. With the 2012/13 Don Deeble Rising Star Award cycle drawing to a close, organisers are now on the lookout for more young talent to nominate this year. “We certainly encourage all athletes, coaches and parents to email their respective son’s, daughter’s, friend’s or kid’s achievements (age bracket 13-20),” Watson said. “There are a number of ways, even if not nominated for a monthly award, that they can be helped. “Any athlete travelling and having to pay costs can be supported by our club.” To nominate a junior athlete for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award, contact starsport@starnewsgroup. com.au or call 9933 4800.

Dogs dominate By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater remains on top of the Premier Cricket ladder after a comprehensive victory against Melbourne Uni on Saturday. After a dominant day one, the Bulldogs travelled to University Oval for the second half of the match needing just 172 for victory. Resuming in the middle were Bulldogs’ captain Dean Russ and Lucas Dredge but not everything went to plan for Footscray.
After adding 22 runs to the total Russ was bowled by Steven Reid for 35. That brought Travis Dean to the crease with the middle order batsman combining with Dredge to produce a match winning partnership. The pair added 111 for the third wicket to guide Footscray to 2/189. Despite the lopsided nature of the scorecard, the Melbourne Uni bowlers continued to fight with gun leg spinner Fawad Ahmed causing the most problems.
After Dredge was finally dismissed for an impressive 66, Dean followed just six runs later for 61. But the double strike did nothing to slow the Bulldogs down with Dylan Kight and Shanuka Dissanayaka taking Footscray to the win for the loss of just four wickets. Kight went on to make 40 not out while Dissanayaka finished the innings unbeaten on 64. The match was eventually stopped in the 93rd over with Footscray at 4/302.

Playing with a passion A GREAT man once said: “A week is a long time in football” and he was right. Last week I wrote that Deer Park premiership player Shannon Broadbent had been the subject of social media in regards to his exclusion from the WRFL Interleague squad. He was originally left out as the selectors thought he was not playing in the WRFL in 2014. He was contacted and assured the selectors he was definitely playing at Deer Park so they included him in the squad as you would expect of the 2013 Barry Priest Medallist. Last week Shannon signed to play with Tatura for the 2014 season. The newspaper reports that I read were very strong that money was a big factor in the decision. I have no issue with Shannon getting well paid for what he brings to a club, good on him. If clubs want to go down that track, that is their choice. My concern, as it has been for many years, is the culture and expectation we are showing the young players coming through. If it is all about money then grassroots footy is doomed. I don’t back away from that and if you think differently please let me know your thoughts. I look at my eight-year-old son who wants to play footy, he does not know about it as an occupation, he just loves the game. It would be very sad if we lost that. Let me know what you think. THE Yarraville Club Cricket Club has its past players and members day coming up on Saturday 8 February when the first XI take on Bentleigh. They will have many special offers on the day but basically it is a great opportunity for past players to come back and relive old times and have a good time at the club. One person who might be confused is ‘John Farnham O’Keefe’ otherwise known as Tocka. It seems Tocka has not seen the dictionary definition of retirement as he is back playing again in the firsts. If you want more information about the past players day, don’t ask Tocka, call Viv
WILLIAMSTOWN Cricket Club has a very big day coming up with another president’s lunch on Friday 7 February at The Rocks Function Centre at the Williamstown Cricket Ground, Point Gellibrand. The guest speakers are James Brayshaw and Billy Brownless from the Triple M Rush Hour. Cost is $110 per head which includes beer, wine and soft drink plus a two-course meal. For more details and bookings contact Phil McTaggart 0416 023 739 or Geoff Hart 0414 575 431. The afternoon will go from 1pm to 4pm. SPOTSWOOD Football Club has contacted me because they are looking for a head trainer for 2014. You will need to have a level 1 or 2 Sport’s Trainer qualification and will need to be available for Tuesday and Thursday training, plus all day Saturday. Spotswood is a very successful and well run club and from what I have seen, a club that does value and reward the people who contribute off the field. THE Big Bay Swims start this weekend in Williamstown with the Willy Lifesavers annual 2km and 1km swims from Williamstown beach. This is followed on 23 February with the Rotary annual Jalna Bay swim and then the Melbourne Swim Classic at St Kilda Beach on 1 March. On what was a tough day for the fielding side, Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers and finished with the figures of 2/64 off 33 overs. Saturday’s results has Footscray three points clear of the second-placed Melbourne on the Premier Cricket ladder. St Kilda is in third spot with 46 points. Round 15 of the Premier Cricket season continues this weekend with the Bulldogs taking on Northcote in a two-day encounter.

Star Torque Your car also needs care in the heat A Star Advertising Feature
Oil changes should be done about every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres. Anything related to the cooling system should also be checked and car owners should pop the hood and check the battery for acid leaks. Summer can tear up tyres, so check the tread. A simple test from mechanics is look at the tread wear indicator bar that’s moulded into tyres.
The bars are located at the bottoms of the tread grooves in several locations around the tyre. When a tyre is so worn that these bars become visibly flush with the adjacent tread ribs, it’s time to replace the tyre. Car upholstery, dashboards and steering wheels can suffer from too much sunlight and heat beaming down on them regularly.
If parking in the sunshine during summer every day there are several things that can be done to protect the inside part of the car. A windshield sun shade is usually something that folds out and then folds up easily for storing behind the seat. If a shade is used every time the car is parked it will help cut the sun’s rays and can reduce a bit of the heat.

In some places this is possible if there are carparks lined along a park or in leafy neighbourhoods. Obviously, many places lack trees for shade but check out building shade. Try to look for streets where the shade created by buildings will be passing over the car during the hottest part of the day.
While one can be used for the front, a back window shade can also be helpful for some car types. There are products available that can provide an additional protective layer, such as vinyl or leather protectants. Wherever possible, find shady or indoor car parking during the hottest parts of the day.
