As hot as it gets By KRYSTEN MANUEL “HOTTER than the devil’s backside and dry as a drover’s dog.” However you say it, last week the Border battled one of the biggest heatwaves of the century according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). Across NSW and Victoria emergency services were run off their feet, but BOM says while we can still expect a warmer than average February and March, the worst is over for now. “It’s an equal record with the Black Saturday Fires in 2009, and we have data back to1962, with five consecutive days over 40 degrees,” BOM climatologist Acacia Pepler said. “It’s up there with the biggest heatwave of the last 100 years. “What’s interesting is it’s the second heatwave of January, the first hitting Northern NSW and this is following 2013 as the warmest year on record for Australia.” The Border’s five-day heatwave began on Tuesday with 41.2 degrees, Wednesday climbed to 41.8, Thursday to 43.6, Friday 42.6 (just one degree off the hottest January day on record), and Saturday back to 41.2. Despite warnings to stay inside, utilise air-conditioning, drink plenty of water and keep an eye on those particularly vulnerable to heat, many paramedics were doing back to back shifts to keep up with demand. Call-outs to cases of heat exhaustion were 505 in total for Victoria, with the most recorded on Thursday at 163. Cardiac arrests totalled 208 with the most, 77 cases, recorded on Friday, and 60 children were left in cars over the six day period from Monday to Saturday. In the Hume region, 20 cases of heat exhaustion were recorded with the most, eight, recorded on Wednesday. Ambulance Victoria CEO Greg
Chris Schulz and his two children Olivia and Boadie doing their best to keep cool at Noreuil Park. Sassella has thanked paramedics and the community for their efforts during this week’s heatwave. “While many people were able to escape the heat by staying inside with the air-conditioner on, our paramedics, ambulance community officers and community emergency response teams were working outside helping their
communities throughout the unprecedented heatwave,” Mr Sassella said. “Our ambulance community officers and community emergency response teams had the additional difficulty of juggling ambulance and other work commitments, while some of them and our paramedics also faced fire threats to their own homes.
“Unfortunately we experienced similar challenges in 2009 during the heatwave and Black Saturday of that time and this would also have preyed on the minds of our staff and those of other emergency services.” Ambulance NSW spokesperson Jacqui Levett said paramedics treated a multitude of people as a result of high
temperatures throughout NSW, with Albury paramedics still battling an increased workload. “Our paramedics, firefighters and all emergency services in the area at the moment are very busy because of the heat and the fires,” she said. “So they’ve certainly ramped up their efforts at the moment.”

His field of dreams THE dream of Kerry Pietsch is far from typical. To host a vintage harvest day on his farm in Pleasant Hills featuring one of Australia’s largest private header collections working in the same paddock is an accomplishment close to Mr Pietsch’s heart. As a farmer and vintage header collector, Mr Pietsch wants to give young, old, rural and urban people the chance to see, hear and smell living history. “It will be a scene not witnessed in the Australian bush for generations, and will give a unique insight into how our forefathers farmed a century ago,’’ Mr Pietsch said. And so, Australia’s pioneer farm history is set to come alive at a unique harvest day in Southern NSW next month - The Warrangong Vintage Harvest Day, to be held at Pleasant Hills on Sunday, 9 February. The day will showcase an array of horse and tractor drawn, and self-propelled harvesting machinery in a once-in-a-lifetime event celebrating Australia’s rural heritage. The event will feature an array of restored and working harvesters, winnowers, threshers, strippers, binders, chaff cutters and tractors. The machines will be used to harvest 15 hectares of the heritage wheat variety Olympic and a pea crop which were sown by Mr Pietsch using a 1950s crawler tractor and 1970s 24-row Massey Ferguson combine. Mr Pietsch has used a Blackstone side delivery hay rake, CLAAS Maximum baler and CLAAS

On display during the harvest day will be the Headlie Taylor header while a horse-drawn stripper dating back to the 1890s will be working in the crop. With gates opening at 8am, the demonstrations will get underway at 9am with scythe cutting and threshing by hand, followed by a swather working in the crop. The crop will be cut and sheaves made with a horse-drawn binder. During the day, a horse-drawn stripper will cut the crop with the grain separated by a winnower.

RESEARCHERS from the University of Melbourne could be knocking on your door any day now. In a study aimed at gaining a better understanding of the health of Australian males, Ten to Men is collecting vital data on men’s health including general well-being, lifestyle, mental health, diet, exercise, social networks and relationships. From this month, Ten to Men researchers will be knocking on doors in selected neighbourhoods in Albury and Lavington and inviting males aged between 10 and 55 to join the study. Participants will have the chance to win a $100 gift voucher, but will also be helping fill in the knowledge gap on male health and eventually save lives. “A better understanding of the health of Australian males is long overdue, University of Melbourne professor Dallas English said. “We need to let go of the stereotype of the tough Aussie male and identify the real barriers to men achieving optimal health. Public health statistics shows the health of Australian males is a clear concern and they are, in many areas, worse off than their female counterparts - they die five years younger (on average), have higher mortality rates from injuries and suicide, and are at greater risk of many cancers and chronic conditions.

Focus on arson this summer THE danger of unattended campfires becoming bushfires is a message that’s “just not sinking in,” according to Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) Hume’s land and fire regional manager Shaun Lawlor. Mr Lawlor said an increase in the number of deliberately lit bushfires and abandoned campfires had led to the development of a joint agency working group to focus on the issue. “Already this summer we have seen a number of deliberately lit bushfires in forest areas near townships,” he said. “We are currently investigating a number of recent bushfires in the Hume Region which are suspected to have been deliberately lit. “Unfortunately it appears the message that unattended campfires can easily spread and turn into bushfires, doesn’t seem to be getting through to some people. “Any one of these fires could have easily escaped and developed into something more serious under the right conditions.” In response to this and the work of firebugs, emergency management organisations have launched a co-ordinated campaign to crack down on arsonists this summer. Victoria Police is working collaboratively with the DEPI, Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Parks Victoria (PV) to monitor and investigate suspected deliberately lit fires.
It will take a combined effort to curb arsonists’ behaviour. Officer in charge of the Cobram CIU and crime manager for the Shire of Moira, Detective Sergeant Marcus Boyd, said a key area of concern for agencies were areas of public land along the Murray and Goulburn rivers, from Bundalong to Barmah. “Arson is a serious crime, and poses a major threat to the community,” he said. “By working together we can combine resources and intelligence to more effectively patrol popular areas of public land and investigate malicious ignitions. “Operation Firesetter, a Victoria Police initiative designed to reduce the likelihood of bushfire arson in high-risk periods, will work to this end. “The overall aim of this operation is to reduce the occurrence and impact of bushfires that are deliberately lit or start as a result of unattended camp-
fires during the high risk period; from the start of November to the end of April each year.” Forest patrols will be conducted during the Australia Day long-weekend to ensure campers and other forest users comply with fire regulations. This year’s Crime Stoppers Bushfire Arson Campaign is also calling on the community to take action against arson. The campaign, a joint initiative between Victoria Police and Crime Stoppers Victoria, arose from the final report of the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission, which called for a comprehensive, co-ordinated state-wide approach to arson prevention. DEPI and Parks Victoria are urging members of the public to help prevent arson by reporting any suspicious behaviour to Victoria Police or by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or triple zero.
PV Team Leader – Shepparton Depot, Neville Wells, DEPI forest and fire Officer – Goulburn District, Phil Savage, Detective Sergeant Marcus Boyd, CFA Operations Officer District 22 – Moira Catchment, Rob Van Dorsser.

Elgin Boulevard works will commence today.
A RECENT study has revealed almost one in three Aussies don’t mind draining the lizard in the pool. With Australia Day tipped to be a scorcher, thousands of backyard pool parties will be held across the country, and among the barbecues, beers and budgie smugglers, will lurk some suspiciously green water. The study by Australian pool and spa care experts PoolWerx has revealed that while blokes are the worst offenders, 25 per cent of women also have no problems with a sneaky pee in the pool. The study also lifted the esky lid on a few safety dangers, with 47 per cent of pool owners indicating booze was
consumed in their pool area. One in 10 pool owners admitted that someone had leapt off the roof into their pool and 12 per cent said they’d had broken glass in the pool before. PoolWerx Albury owners Robert John Hudson said despite the excitement around Australia Day, it was un-Australian to avoid pool safety. “Australia has the highest number of pools per capita in the world but while awareness programs like Kids Alive do The Five are ingrained in our culture, sensibility can go out the window when alcohol is involved,” he said. “Alcohol and pools don’t
mix, but at the very least glass bottles should never be taken into the pool area as broken or shattered glass is not only dangerous but can take days to completely remove from a pool. “Pools should always be enjoyed responsibly. With friends and family around, ensure the gate is closed and children are supervised at all times. The last way you want to end Australia Day is with an accident. “After the party is over, the health of your water may decline due to an increased bather load and fluids entering the pool, so either bring in a sample or get in a professional to restore your pH and chlorine to a safe level.”

When it’s hot, hot, hot By KRYSTEN MANUEL FOR the last week we have seen pictures plastered across news and social media sites of a variety of melted objects, as well as the weird and wonderful ways people use to get cool. And it’s all just compounding evidence that here on the Border, it’s hotter than a shearer’s armpit. But the current extreme heatwave conditions across southern Australia should be no surprise according to climate change commentator and Charles Sturt University (CSU) academic, Professor Kevin Parton. “As a species we seem to have made the decision to continue along the path of climate change,” he said. “Two predicted consequences of this are that weather will become more extreme and that there will be more instances of extreme weather. “So why should we be so surprised when we are in the middle of extreme weather such as the current heatwave?” Prof Parton believes that as we have accepted climate change, people should expect more heat, more cold, more wet, more dry, more wind, more bushfires, and more floods, and so we should be prepared for these events. “But as a species we seem to live from crisis to crisis,” he said. “Once we get through a disaster, we seem to have a memory loss about it, and just go back to our normal lives. “We need to better learn the lessons from the current extreme circumstances and establish systems to respond more effectively in future,” he said.

Local Kristyn Maloney was less than impressed with the state of her Foo Fighters CD after leaving it in the car during last week’s heatwave.
A little warm on the tracks THOSE travelling by train to get some Australian Open action last week may have run into a little trouble. V/Line was working on the latest round of Regional Rail Link (RRL) works during the scorching heatwave, affecting Ballarat, Bendigo and Albury timetables. Hot weather timetables applied to the entire V/Line network from Tuesday to Friday (except Ballarat and Bendigo where train replacement coaches were running due to the RRL works). When temperatures are forecast to reach 36 degrees, V/ Line invokes heat speed restrictions for safety reasons. V/Line Chief Executive Theo Taifalos said using coaches to support trains assisted in minimising delays to customers. “It’s a credit to everyone involved, V/Line conductors, drivers, train engineers, track and signalling
crews, customer service staff and coach drivers that we were able to get customers to their destinations during the extreme heat,” he said. “Amidst this once-in-a-century heatwave, V/Line continued to transport people to and from work and sporting events including the Australian Open tennis.” “We had extra coaches on standby throughout the extreme weather so our customers always had transport if we had a problem running a train, such as Thursday night when lightning strikes put vital signals out of action. “Trains have returned to the Ballarat and Bendigo lines today thanks to the dedicated work of Regional Rail Link construction teams who continued working in stifling heat.” Mr Taifalos said up to 300 train replacement coaches were used daily during the RRL works and to support heat-affected trains.

Tolerance and respect THOUGH I personally don’t believe that there is a God, I’m not against a healthy version of a higher being, if it inspires us to step up to serve and be kind to others. What I do object to, are fundamentalist religious groups harassing decent, regular people, who are making difficult life choices, people such as those who require the services of the fertility clinic on Englehardt Street. How can it be that the Albury City Council and police are unable to act in the face of this menace? As usual, money talks. From what I understand, this group has the resources to legally threaten the Albury City Council into submission. The council, I imagine, don’t want to spend ratepayers’ money fighting a legal battle with the top shelf legal operatives who have been engaged to defend this radical behaviour outside the premises on Englehardt St.
So continues the long tradition of religion, wielding political and financial power to impose its dogma. It’s not a case built on reason or compassion but on the ability to exercise might. For centuries, women and children have been subjected to the abuse of power by this behemoth and we need to push back. Thankfully, the abuse of children by those who claim to represent the will of God is now becoming public. Fundamentalists need to be clearly and publicly opposed by the broader community. It’s time these people understood that there are many value systems out there that they need to tolerate and accept, if not respect. Religious fanatics claim absolute God-given authority for their opinions, but this is no longer an acceptable justification for imposing one’s beliefs on others. They need to come to terms with this fact and stop resorting to arm-twisting in order to force on others what is, in fact, a subjective position.

I am happy for the hardcore factions of the Catholic Church to follow their own principles with regard to abortion. It doesn’t hurt others. I am also happy that, having great kids of my own and wishing for no more, we have access, firstly to contraception and, if this fails, a service where one can safely terminate a pregnancy. Thumbs down to intolerance. Jo Lancaster, South Albury.

in infrastructure and services but an investment in thinking and planning - a strategic partnership with all levels of government to meet the challenges and opportunities of sustainable growth in Australia.” He also stated: “Australia’s population is growing rapidly, but not evenly across the country.” And lastly: “We have asked the Australian Government for a commitment to work with RCA to deliver better and stronger regional capitals for the future benefit of all Australians.” Yes, we have an economy based on growth and consumption. The world’s population is increasing by around 80 million each year and all we hear about is economic growth. How many years of regional development will it take until we have to spread out even further? What does Mr Byatt mean by sustainable growth? Australia is already probably overpopulated given our water resources and poor soils. In a recent interview Paul Erlich said that what we need is a consumption condom! Open your eyes as to what is going on around the world and just think seriously about how much longer we humans can keep increasing our economic growth? Let’s face it, matters are not getting better in our world and to deny that we have a population problem will lead to our downfall. Growth cannot continue on a finite resource base but we just keep plugging away to get that last little bit. With the narrow attitude of organisations like the RCA there is little hope for mankind. We think that we are intelligent and clever but who gave us that name? I think we are a very stupid species and are destroying ourselves. A good example of our cleverness for the sake of “progress” is in Japan where they built the world’s largest nuclear power station, Fukushima, on top of three tectonic plates with a massive undersea volcano just off their coastline. How brilliant is that? And the Fukushima situation has the potential to wipe out all life on earth if things happen for the worse. That’s progress! Sumner Berg, Beechworth. More letters, Page 8

Partners In Recovery is an exciting new initiative of the Commonwealth Department of Health. It aims to better support people with severe and persistent mental illness and their carers and families by getting services and supports to work in a more collaborative, coordinated, and integrated way.
CONGRATULATIONS to both writers of letters (News Weekly, 15 January), Ray Williams and Wendy Cole. They are expressing the sentiment of the majority of Albury citizens; that the antiabortion protesters in Englehardt Street must be stopped by the police and council. Obstructing the public footpath and blocking access to a legal business cannot be justified by anyone, regardless of their convictions. The invasion of women’s privacy in health matters is also unforgivable. Their tactics are not supported by the Albury Catholic Church and they are an embarrassment to parishioners. A senior, Albury Catholic doctor said, “it does not matter what your own personal opinion about

abortion is, the protesters outside Englehardt Street clinic are approaching women at their most vulnerable”. Recently, Pope Francis said his faithful should not be obsessed with ‘small-minded rules’ and to “emphasise compassion over condemnation in dealing with abortion, gay rights and contraception” (ABC News, 11 December). It is time the residents of Englehardt Street saw evidence of that advice from the protesters, who by their behaviour in condemning a vulnerable group of women, obviously do not agree with him. As the editorial in News Weekly last year said: “Leave them alone”! Assoc Prof Pieter Mourik AM, Barnawartha.

The aroma and sweetness of Italy
DRINK in the brilliant rainbow of macarons, delicate rows of exquisite pasticceria italiana and the rich, seductive aroma of real Italian coffee ... For tradition that comes only from secrets whispered from generation to generation, for authenticity that comes only from Europe, and for devilish treats that ensure your return, your only choice is Patty’s Patisserie. Having been open for three months, owners Patricia Ortiz and Florin Lazar have been run off their feet thanks to the Border’s new found love of Italian delicacies and French – an eclectic professional style with humble beginnings … “My Grandmother was a pastry chef, she had a patisserie for over 50 years,” Patty said. “I would learn with her when I was eight. From her I learnt the basic things of the patisserie, but also the importance of quality.” At just nine years old Patty vividly remembers sweating it out in the kitchen with her Grandmother, turning the old pasta maker by hand – there were no Kitchen Aid’s back then! “The pasta maker was very old, it was a very long process,” she said. “It was hard work but I learnt a lot from her. “I also remember she was very precise, very fussy. Quality comes first – you have to cook for other people as you would cook for your family.”
Looking at the business Patty and Florin built and the perfection delivered in each eclair, cake, tiramisu or coffee, it’s clear preparing delicious food is in their blood. But this wasn’t always clear to Patty, who pursued a degree and career in economics for many years, before reverting back to her old passion. “In 2004-5 I was preparing to get a Masters in Economy and I realised I loved baking,” Patty said. “So I went back to school to become a pastry chef in Italy and also travelled to do some short courses and specialise in different techniques. Then I worked in a traditional Pasticceria in Verona before starting my own business. “We moved to Australia at the end of 2011.” Aside from the sweet delights, Patty also offers savoury options such as Italian gourmet pies, quiches and panini. “Our pies are becoming very popular,” she said. “They’re made with very friable Italian pastry that melts in your mouth. “We also make cakes and can cater for special occasions.” Customers will also be pleased to know that everything is made on premises without using margarine, artificial flavours or any harmful additives.
The other side of the business is coffee – not large take-away containers of mediocre brand coffee and burnt milk, whipped up by whom ever’s nearest to the coffee machine, but smooth, intense, real coffee. “We are very fussy with our coffee,” Florin said. “It’s the best aroma you can have in the morn-

Straight Teeth - No Braces!
Get rid of those less than desirable Christmas wines - swap them for Fifth Leg.
REMEMBER that familiar, fake smile you give at Christmas when someone gifts you a bottle of cheap, nasty, or just plain disgusting wine? Yes, it’s painful, but now is your chance to trade in the putrid plonk - and just in time for Australia Day! The Fifth Leg Bad Taste Amnesty is coming to the rescue on Saturday 15 February to help stamp out the consumption of sub-standard wine. On this day, Australians have the chance to swap a bottle of inferior plonk for an accomplished bottle of Fifth Leg of their choice, free. All First Choice liquor outlets nationally will house ‘swap zones’ where they will revel in
receiving your dodgy plonk and swapping it for a bottle of Fifth Leg. So if you have wine that tastes like acid wash, a footballer’s dirty washing, or you’d just rather not go there - bring it in. Full of fun and larger than life, Fifth Leg has developed a reputation as somewhat of a ‘refined larrikin’ - serious about wine and the good things in life, but not at the expense of simple, easygoing fun and a good laugh. Fifth Leg likes to explore great questions over a good bottle of wine: like why was a fossilised skeleton of a Tasmanian Tiger found in the ‘Devil’s Lair’ cave in WA? Did it travel all the way from its home state? Are its descendants roaming the
earth, or are they extinct? And of course, why was there a mysterious ‘fifth leg’ found with the remains? Fifth Leg is the quirky offshoot of renowned Margaret River winery, Devil’s Lair, and makes wines worthy of its esteemed pedigree, without going on and on about the detail. These are great tasting wines, made with grapes from an array of Western Australian vineyards, in the varieties and blends that are sure to be a hit. The Fifth Leg Bad Taste Amnesty will be held from 1pm-5pm 15 February at First Choice Liquor, Dean Street Albury, though there is a limit of one bottle per person.

LEAVE AND LIVE. Risk factors fuel fires THE flames of summer fires touch all Australians in one way or another. We see them on the news, we fight them, we lose property to them and sometimes even see the lives of our loved ones lost to them. This is why it is important we understand the behaviour of bushfires in order to assess risk. Fire and Rescue NSW have broken down bushfire behaviour determinants into three factors - fuel, weather and topography. While all relevant data in relation to these three factors is not completely known, weather is the element that creates the greatest difficulty in predicting bushfire behaviour. “The combination of these factors creates a dynamic entity capable of huge variations in behaviour in relatively short times frames with relatively small variations in the elements which control it, Fire and Rescue NSW said. The effects of weather in general
can cause a bushfire to be unpredictable and therefore harder to fight. It has the ability to cause a fire to increase in intensity and rate of spread, change in direction and violently erupt. Fire behaviour can be altered by the effects of wind, temperature, relatively humidity, atmospheric stability, frontal movement and the effects of drought. More information on bushfire weather can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology website. With respect to fuel, it is more quality than quantity that will determine flammability. Factors affecting the flammability of fire fuel are size, quantity (tonnes per hectare), type of vegetation, arrangement, fuel and moisture content. This is why bush areas are so vulnerable, although if they have been burnt previously and contain more wet, green foliage as opposed to dead trees and dry grass, the fire will generally not burn as hot or spread as fast. Topography is the final determining
While fires can be savagely unpredictable, there are ways to understand how they work. factor of bushfire behaviour. “During fires at Jindabyne and adjacent areas it was common knowledge to local residents that the surrounding mountain range had the potential to

change a westerly wind at the southern tip of the ranges to a south/westerly and further northward along the eastern side of the range to a south/easterly to easterly wind, Fire and Rescue
NSW said. “Such is the affect of the mountain range. It requires a great deal of experience and local knowledge to be able to interpret the effects of such winds so as to accurately determine a fire’s movements. The lay of the land will directly affect where a fire will head. A slope in the land will cause a fire to slow if it is burning downhill or accelerate if it is moving uphill. “The extent of the fire’s progress, apart from the fuel load and weather conditions, will be determined by the angle of the slope, Fire and Rescue NSW said. “For each 10 degrees of uphill slope the fire will double in rate of spread. For each additional 10 degrees of slope, the rate of spread will double again. Similarly, for downhill slopes, for every 10 degrees of negative slope the rate of spread will halve, an additional 10 degrees again halving the fire’s effects.

FIRE Danger Ratings tell you how a fire would behave and how hard it would be to put out if one started. They are your trigger to take action. The ratings are based on weather conditions and other factors, such as the volume of dry vegetation in an area. They are forecast using Bureau of Meteorology data up to four days in advance. The ratings are declared by fire weather district, so it’s important to understand which district you’re in. The three most important ratings to look out for are Severe, Extreme and Code Red. Code Red signals the worst conditions for a grass or bushfire and means that if a fire was to start, it would be uncontrollable. No house can withstand a fire in Code Red conditions, so defending your home is impossible. A rating of Extreme or Severe signals high fire risk conditions. If a fire starts and takes hold, it will be unpredictable and fast moving. If you live in a high-risk area, your house is not prepared, or you are not able to defend it, leaving early in the day is your safest option. Total Fire Bans tell you what you can and cannot do to avoid a fire starting. They are legal restrictions which, if broken, can be penalised with large fines and imprisonment. Check your rating every day over summer at cfa.vic.gov.au or by calling the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

LEAVE AND LIVE. Inside the flames By KRYSTEN MANUEL
“Don’t be a firebug!”
Don’t be a tosser WE ALL know not to throw cigarette butts out the car window, but many people still continue to do so. The fact remains that cigarettes can and do start fires. And in the conditions the Border has been facing over the past week, the odd ‘flick’ cannot be risked. Every year Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is called to hundreds of roadside fires believed to be caused by discarded butts. It was FRNSW station officer Paul Scott, based at Parramatta Fire Station, who brought the extent of the issue to public notice. Having fought many fires on busy roads and even railway tracks, station officer Scott had had enough. With the help of a community risk management team a proposal for an awareness campaign for smokers was composed - “Don’t be a tosser.” But while it was a good idea in theory the connection between cigarette butts and roadside fires was still only supported by circumstantial evidence. Enter Jennifer Dainer, a student at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), who, with help from the FRNSW and CSIRO, provided solid proof. “As part of the study, called Can Cigarette Butts Start (Bush)fires, Ms Dainer conducted outdoor trials, supervised by Station Officer Scott and three firefighters with a fire engine from Parramatta Fire Station,” FRNSW said.
“On the day it was around 27 degrees C with a north-westerly wind, and it was pretty dry,” Station Officer Scott said. In three out of the 75 trials, or 4 per cent, the grass caught alight and started to burn, requiring the firefighters to extinguish the flames. “The fires would have progressed quite quickly if we hadn’t been there,” he said. “It’s no wonder we’re called to so many fires on busy roads and freeways and by railway lines, when they can start so easily.” As well as the outdoor trials, the study also involved laboratory trials to show whether cigarette butts could ignite grassy fuel (hay) in a well-controlled environment and a survey of the number of cigarette butts on two median strips on a three-lane road in Western Sydney. “The laboratory trials found cigarette butts ignited the hay in 33 per cent of cases,” FRNSW said. “Ignitions increased when the wind speed increased, fuel moisture decreased and the degree of the contact between the fuel bed and combustion area of the cigarette increased. “During the survey, 426 cigarette butts were collected in a 60 square metre area of the median strip of Abbott Road, Seven Hills, over a three-week period.” And that’s how the Don’t Be A Firebug campaign was birthed, but people are still flicking cigarette butts out the window - even in these conditions.
JUST as understanding fire behaviour is important as an Australian, so too is understanding the inner workings of a fire. The CSIRO has named flame height, length, angle, depth and (to a lesser extent) smoke colour, spotting behaviour and fire whirls as the characteristics of a bushfire. The height of flames is the most obvious characteristic of a fire - the vertical distance that continuous flames extend above the fuel bed. “While flame height is easy to observe and is often reported or recorded by visual observation, it is quite difficult to obtain a consistent measure,” the CSIRO said. “This is because flames are essentially burning envelopes of gas released from the fuel. As a result, the flames are highly turbulent and never consistent.” Bubbles of gas may also detach from the main fire hub. Flame height is estimated by observing the average maximum height of continuous flames over a period of time (say a minute) and for some distance around the perimeter of the fire (say 10-15 metres). The CSIRO says it is useful to record both the average height of flame and the height of flashes of flame and what fuel they are burning to better determine the severity of the fire. Flame length is used to describe the intensity of a fire. It is the distance from the base of the flaming zone to the tip of the continuous flames. Due to the unpredictable nature of weather, flame length is more difficult to estimate. Flame angle is the angle between the ground and the average flame around the flaming zone. Of course this is heavily determined by weather - wind
Understanding characteristics of fire will help you understand its severity.
As Australians, understanding fires is crucial - especially as fires rage across the South East of the country. specifically, though it is also influenced by the convection column established above the fire and gives an insight into the happenings above the fire. Flame depth is that distance behind the fire front that is covered in continuous flame. “It is quite difficult to estimate on large fires because of the need to look through the
flaming zone to see what is happening behind it,” the CSIRO said. “Flame depth is dependent on the speed the fire front is moving (rate of spread) and the length of time flames remain over any particular point in the fuel bed (residence time). It provides an indication of the type and quantity of fuel being burnt.”

Oz Day the Border way By KRYSTEN MANUEL THERE’S no doubt Australia Day by the river is the typical Border way. Drinks, good food, good company and live music are quick to follow, and as far as music goes, you don’t want to miss the riverside, Mumfordesque, high energy performance of The Timbers. Quickly rising in popularity, Simon Basey spoke to NewWeekly about their particular sound - a sprightly old-school-Irish tune with influences from The Pogues and Cat Empire. “With the success of bands such as Mumford and Sons, and Boy and Bear, they play this style of music and once a band becomes really popular more people start taking notice of a certain genre of music,” Basey said. “The style of music that influences us is quite old and traditional, but it’s a coincidence more than good planning that the style of music we play has become quite popular too. It’s definitely more luck than good judgement.” Despite their popular sound, The Timbers have been told they have a unique quality to their
music, a quality that can perhaps be attributed to the many instruments involved throughout a set, including some unexpected additions. The Timbers’ instrumentation includes vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Basey, also playing the bass lines utilising foot operated bass pedals, Benjamin Roberts on lead guitar, backing vocals, tin whistle, stomp box and foot tambourine, violin and backing vocals by Sarah O’Brien and percussionist Craig Atkins on cajon, djembe, congas and didgeridoo. “We have a lot of comments saying we sound like nothing they’ve ever heard before because we have the brass element in there,” Basey said. “The origins of the band was an acoustic duo, then the band had a violinist and percussionist for a while and now we have the trumpet in there and another member who is actually from Ireland. “Having all these different influences has affected our sound in that we have these crucial Irish roots in our sound, plus the trumpet adds real jazz and mariachi elements as

playing multiple instruments and moving around a bit so it keeps us busy,” Basey said. “Between us we have banjos and mandolins, and an array of percussion as well. I don’t know if

Their roots are in blues By KRYSTEN MANUEL FOR the fresh sounds of local talent, treat yourself to the eclectic, absorbing music of Joel Sulman and Michael Gorham as the first leg of their Blues and Roots tour kicks off. Having already been announced to play alongside Elvis Costello, John
Mayer and the Doobie Brothers at the Deniliquin Blues ’n’ Roots Festival in April this year, both Sulman and Gorham can also claim fame from their impressive local following. “I’ve found Albury to be really supportive and there seems to be repeat attenders to events which is cool,” Sulman said.

Having made a successful first stop in Woomargama earlier in the month, the pair are looking forward to their following six local gigs. “It was really good, we had a really good turnout,” Sulman said. “We had a few guys from Holbrook, Albury and a few different places so people were travelling to get there which was a plus.” The Sulman/ Gorham tour was only recently created when Sulman took the initiative and made contact to promote a symbiotic musical relationship for the two. Inspired by soulful Blues stars Gary Moore and Joe Walsh, the psychedelic eccentricity of Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Buckley, to the raw power of Bruce Springsteen and Dave Grohl, Gorham encompasses all aspects of performing by creating visions through lyrically haunting ballads infused with his euphoric guitar stylings. Having achieved many career milestones, Gorham has an impressive list of accolades to his name, including a solo in Encore at the Sydney Opera House and an appearance on Win Television’s 60 Minutes. Bred in the centre of culturedriven Byron Bay, Sulman learnt about Blues and Roots before he was able to drop the training wheels off his pushbike. After 20 years rehearsing on most modern instruments Joel released his first project last year - the Chinese
Whispers EP which contains top 10 charting track “Stop and Listen” (#6, Triple J Unearthed Roots) and the recently released ‘No Sir’. Although a newcomer to the scene, In the last 12 months, Joel has been seen supporting the likes of The Whitlams, Allensworth, Shaun Kirk and Diesel. After the tour, Sulman will be flying off to the States to record an album and further feed his love of travel. “It’s a reason to get over there and play some music,” he said. “I’ve always grown up listening to the Nashville and Memphis style music and having that culture of being able to embed yourself in where the blues came from, it’s a different thing. “There’s a lot of reasons but it’s also the different scenery - it’s always nice to get around and try different studios and get some American recording standard in there. It’s a different sound, a different feel, different people. “I’m really enjoying travelling right now. Ask me in 10 years and it might not be as big a highlight but now I’m enjoying getting out of town to places I’ve never been.” Joel Sulman and Michael Gorham are playing at The Albion, Albury on 25 January, The Boomerang, Lavington on 2 February, The Riverina Hotel, Holbrook on 15 February, The Albion on 8 March and Carriers Arms, Wodonga on 9 March.
Michael Gorham and Joel Sulman will be delivering their impressive sounds across the Border for the next two months.

YOU’D better believe it - this is no “John Farnham One Last Time tour.” This is it for the mighty Hunters and Collectors (H&C). “There’s no intention to write new material, we’re not going to re-live anything,” H&C front man Mark Seymour said. “This is the last thing the band’s going to do.” A Day on the Green (ADOTG) is always a fantastic festival, but with H&C claiming this is the last time they’ll perform here, it’s all the more reason to get out there - that and an amazing line-up of bands. “I remember 12 years ago they (ADOTG) were just tiny little events and now they’ve really grown into some quite special regional festivals that cover the whole country,” Seymour said. “They’ve become immensely popular because they’re multi-generational and people can bring their kids. You can reach a much broader audience in terms of age by doing those shows, and they have much more grass roots credibility with Australians. “It will be a really big show, I’m really looking forward to it.” Appropriately kicking off on the Aus-
tralia Day long weekend in January and stretching across weekends until midApril, this powerhouse Australian outfit is once again set to enthral and thrill not only devotees from the past, but also a whole new generation of music lovers. The tour hits All Saints Estate, Rutherglen on Saturday 8 February. Promoters Roundhouse Entertainment has once again put together a stellar line-up with the Hunters being joined by another iconic Australian rock outfit, the much-loved You Am I. Special guests will be Something For Kate and British India, who both appear on the Hunters tribute album Crucible. While you will find no new music from H&C on the album, Crucible is unique in its make-up, cleverly lending itself to a very diverse audience. By featuring 15 original H&C songs as well as 15 beautifully appropriated versions from artists including The Living End, Birds Of Tokyo, Neil Finn, Eddie Vedder and Paul Kelly, the album aims to rebirth the love of H&C songs with young people. “We made so many records over such a long period of time - 13 albums over an 18-year period,” Seymour said. “We spanned different eras in sound from the mid-’80s to ’98 and the idea of getting artists to make sense of all that ... I didn’t think they would. But midway
Box office
through last year we started getting really good feedback. “There’s some really good tracks in there; I have my favourites. Hear No Evil - that’s fantastic, Dogs is really good, I really love Tears of Joy ... oddly enough the bands that have approached the songs electronically have had the most success. “It’s really creative ‘un-rock,’ right away from Hunters and Collectors’ sound altogether. I think that’s really the best test of the material where people have to experiment with it and take the songs into territory Hunters and Collectors would never go to.” So sadly, we must say goodbye to the ‘Hunnas,’ but rest assured Seymour will continue to write, continue to perform and continue to ‘tell the stories’ on stage. “The thing I love the most is singing and I love writing the words - song-writing is crucial to my life,” he said. “I really enjoy performing and telling stories on stage. “I’ll be doing this until I die, I live and breathe it.” ADOTG is on Saturday 8 February at All Saints Winery, Rutherglen. It is a fully licensed event, strictly no BYO alcohol. Food will be available on-site or BYO picnic. Deck chairs and picnic rugs are recommended. DON’T let the tedious, eye-rolling, walk-out-worthy start to this film tempt you to actually leave - the reward for staying is far greater. The Railway Man tells the true story of Eric Lomax (Firth), a WW2 POW survivor who suffers from severe posttraumatic stress disorder decades after the event. Despite having finally found a glimmer of hope in Patti (Kidman), Lo-
fusing storyline which jumps decade to decade, gradually unravelling more and more of Lomax’s terrifying ordeal. Be prepared for an exceptionally weak, frustrating beginning to the film and a particularly pathetic offering from Kidman throughout. But also be prepared for one of the most humbling visions you may ever see. This film will drag you through the painful pits of rage and sorrow. It will leave your heart aching and it will remind you what true forgiveness really is - the devastation it can cause in its absence and the life-breathing gift it can be when truly embraced.

Wanting to help her new husband, Patti makes contact with ‘Uncle,’ a veteran who served and slaved beside Lomax during their horrifying ordeal. Uncle is persistent with Lomax, trying several approaches to get him to deal with his past and finally live the life he deserves. After being sent ‘a message he can’t ignore,’ Lomax travels back to the Thai-Burma Railway he was forced to work on to meet his tormentor and face his past. Be prepared for a sometimes con-

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga
A retro classic By KRYSTEN MANUEL THIS classic Californian Bungalow style home is sure to impress with high ceilings, ornate ceiling roses and toasty open fireplaces for chilly Border winters. Centrally located and just walking distance from shopping centres and schools, 19 Watson Street offers a taste of old-time paradise amid the convenience of bustling Wodonga city. Upon first glance, its street presence says it all - bold pillars, shady verandah, a rich colour palette and expansive green lawn. The home also enjoys a secure front gate and undercover parking for two cars. Through the double doors will find you on beautiful polished floorboards in a wide entryway. You will feel a sense of airiness once inside thanks to wonderfully high ceilings throughout the front of the home and ample natural lighting. To your left is the queen-sized, carpeted master bedroom, complete with

built-in robes, ceiling fan and delicate ceiling roses and cornices. On the other side of the entryway is the second of three bedrooms. This room also enjoys ornate ceiling roses and built-in robe, and stands on polished floorboards. The study is slightly smaller than the bedrooms, but allows ample natural lighting. The main bathroom offers both a bath and larger shower, but all in an elegant sauna-room style, with wood lining the walls and convenient built-in shelving. In the heart of the home is a room with a purpose only limited to your imagination. A potential sitting room, formal dining, rumpus or music room, this area features an open fireplace and electric heater. The kitchen follows a French provincial style with dishwasher and ample cupboards. Bathroom two is identical in function to bathroom one - with a large shower and bath, long
2
vanity and separate toilet for added convenience. The laundry is fitted with a third toilet backing onto the backyard, perfect for a quick break for avid gardeners who don’t wish to bring dirt through the house. The family/living room stretches across the back of number 19. A long, light-filled room, it features wood heating for winter, a split-system for summer and sliding doors leading to the yard. The backyard follows the historically respectful style of the rest of the home, with established trees and shrubs, brick barbecue hollow, garden shed and a classic circular courtyard - very inviting for the entertainer within. Lastly, 19 Watson Street also offers a second building large enough for a home studio or fourth bedroom and complete with split-system - a must for times like these! Don’t miss your chance to inspect this beautiful home.

Albury Wodonga
Value of presentation “FIRST impressions are lasting” and “you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.” A couple of old clichés but they are true when it comes to marketing your home according to Wodonga Real Estate Best
Agents Des Lonergan. An almost 30-year veteran of the profession, Mr Lonergan has seen so much change over time in the way properties are marketed. In the past a buyer would generally call the agent after
seeing the signboard or reading about it in the paper but with the advent of the internet a new level has been reached and is continually evolving. When on the internet your property is on display all day every day and can be viewed
by people all over the world. Not just the front of the home is shown as in years gone by but buyers demand that all rooms be shown. To better expose your home agents are turning towards professional photography rather than relying on the “Box Brownie” camera of yesteryear. Video or virtual tour is also gaining acceptance in the marketplace, again being captured by professionals. Having your home on the market can be stressful but shouldn’t be all-consuming as planning for the market a few weeks in advance gives time to de-clutter the home to give the feeling of space, make any repairs that are necessary and for you the seller to critically view
the home as though you were looking to purchase. Lawns and gardens should always be kept neat and trim - no need for extravagance by planting shrubs and new lawns etc. Inside the home should be welcoming but also a feeling that it is home and that it is lived in. When potential buyers inspect it’s time for you to vacate the premises so the agent can answer the prospect’s questions and they can think out loud and discuss aspects of the property without potentially offending if they don’t particularly like a feature that could be special to you. Make sure the television is turned off - nothing more offputting to a prospective buyer than a TV or radio blaring while
they are trying to think and take in the features of your home. Soothing orchestral music is acceptable as it generally isn’t distracting. Beds made and clothes in wardrobes/cupboards make for a good impression. Garage and sheds should be neat and tidy, as should the rear garden area. Selling shouldn’t be stressful, Mr. Lonergan said, and won’t be if presentation is planned in advance and maintained all throughout the marketing campaign. His office can offer advice both verbally and in book form “how to sell your home for more” to assist in selling your home. Call Wodonga Real Estate Best Agents on 02) 6056 1888 for more information.

Social Seen Screaming for Jess By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT WAS no surprise to see a full house on Sunday evening for the ‘Nescafe Presents Jessica Mauboy To The End Of The Earth Tour.’ Fans of all ages piled in the Albury Entertainment Centre to watch their idol do her thing, as well as up and coming star Nathaniel Willemse with his recent radio hit ‘You.’ Throughout her performance, Mauboy fans remained mesmerised by her voice and presence, yelling “I love you” every chance they got. A few surprises took place, including a brief rain dance from Jess, a dash of country music here and there, and a beautiful acoustic version of Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time. Pop A Bottle was the final song of the night and had everyone up and out of their chairs, dancing in the isles and belting out every word. Elkie Turner, Emma Hadley, Hollie Symons, Rochelle Dodd and Bridie Edwards.

Local Sport Slip slidin’ their way By KRYSTEN MANUEL FOR the first time in Blackchrome Sidecar Grand Slam Series (BSGSS) history, Diamond Park played host - and into the hands of Australian champion Darrin Treloar and Blake Cox. Despite English team Mark Cossar and Darryl Whetstone’s stellar qualifying heats, Treloar and Cox came out on top in the main race of round three of the BSGSS. Cossar and Whetstone came in second, Mick Headland and Paul Waters in third and Melbourne duo Warren Monson and Matt Morgan in fourth. The BSGSS is known as Australian speedway bike racing’s premier tournament, and with Saturday’s results, is now headed up by Treloar and Cox on 55 points - previously dominated by Headland and Waters. Before Saturday’s turn of events, Hedland and Waters were optimistic about trying out a new track. “It was tremendous to grab the win at our home track at Murray Bridge but this Saturday’s event is vital in terms of consolidating our lead in the series,” Hedland said. “Naturally, this is the first time the Blackchrome Sidecar Grand Slam has appeared at Albury, so no one will have a home track advantage. I’m led to believe the Diamond Park Speedway is a quick lay out and the track should produce a great spectacle. We are looking forward to it”. The event featured riders from Australia, England and New Zealand with a sizable crowd to boot.

Just another trick on the wall By KRYSTEN MANUEL ARE YOUR youngsters bored competing in the same old sports every season? Why not have them try out something a little more challenging? The Albury Climbing Centre offers indoor rock climbing lessons throughout the year, with four-week short courses during the holidays for those who just want to come and try. The last session is this weekend before 10-week programs come into play during the school semester. “This will be our last weekend before we start our 10-week sessions on Saturday 1 February, but the kids are welcome at any time,” he said. “Typically we run our ten-
week sessions in line with the school semester so we have a four week sampler to come in, have a go, see what you think and if you’re keen then your parents can sign you up for 10 weeks. “We run a few open ones to begin with just to let any kid in that age group come and have a go. “We run a development group for kids 12 to 17 years to enable them to develop the skills to become rock climbers, and we do this with a younger group from six to 12 years - they run in 10-week blocks and go through a whole series of competencies. “We start with health and fitness - stretching and how to warm up, and then they move into things like climbing tech-
the x-ray group
nique - how to use the wall and your body to balance, and then we move into rope climbing which starts engaging techniques like belaying which is running the safety ropes and some knot tying skills. “So we give them a broad range of what we do and then when they move into the tenweek we start expanding each of those things - they learn about the equipment, how to identify climbs when you’re in a corner or a crack.” Mr Brown trains six to 12 years, while Ben Mace runs 12 to 17 years. To get involved, contact the Albury Climbing Centre on 0417 422 198 or show up on Saturday morning from 10.30 - noon at 15 Hudson Crescent, Lavington.
