Senior Constable Wendy Tamblyn of Warwick police flagged the blitz this week. Parking and no standing zone offences in relation during drop-off and pickup of children at schools will be under close scrutiny, as will behaviour near school crossings, she said. “Parents and carers are
reminded to park in the designated areas to ensure that children are not put at risk by walking out onto roadways between parked cars,” Sen Const Tamblyn said. Police would also urge parents and carers to make themselves familiar with school drop-off and pick-up practices, she said.
Parents should discuss with their children rules for school zones, and the need to obey the road rules around school zones. “Following the directions of school crossing supervisors, and allowing a little extra time for your trip due to the increase in traffic around schools, will go a long way towards ensuring the safety
of children on their way to or return from school,” Sen Const Tamblyn said. “Police would like to take this opportunity to remind parents to discuss with their children the basics of road safety, particularly children starting school for the first time.” More reports Page 5

TRANQUIL beauty surrounds the visitor at Stanthorpe’s new-look Cherry Lane Nursery on Sugarloaf Road. Stanthorpe local and new owner Morwenna Harslett has been hard at work putting her own personal touches on this already well-established business. She said returning customers may notice a few changes that have been made. The new look and layout includes peaceful, reflective views over the spring water dam. There are clearly and spaciously arranged plant groups and an increased range of Australian native plants, in time to prepare your own Australia Day garden. “I took ownership on 18 December last year and many custom-
ers have already noticed small changes that have been made such as opening the shade that blocked the view of the lake,” Morwenna said. “One customer had been coming here for a couple of years and didn’t know it was there.” The extensive gardens at Cherry Lane Nursery have been used for wedding ceremonies and the like in the past and Morwenna plans to open them again for public viewing. Other plans include extensive growth of the native plant range. Whether you’re looking for gardening advice, a particular plant or just need inspiration, call into Cherry Lane Nursery 60 Sugarloaf Road Stanthorpe, or call (07) 4681 1298 today.

Deathtrap: cruel end to dog’s life By STEVE GRAY A WARWICK man has escaped prosecution after his dog became hopelessly entangled around a post and died in the hot sun. The incident during a heatwave on 3 January drew the ire of neighbours who accused the dog’s owner of neglect. The neighbours said the dog had no access to water or food and its chain was wrapped around a metal post with no shade. “It’s rescuer unwrapped the dog off the post, poured water over it when he could find a container and tried to get the dog to drink - but it was too late,” a neighbour said. Another neighbour photographed the distressed animal shortly before it died, intending to confront the owner when he returned home. “It was extremely hot that day, that’s the reason we went for a look,” he said. “The dog was barking in a distressed manner, the owners were not home and you could see the dog tangled up from the road.” Council staff and the RSPCA attended the scene but the animal, by now in convulsions, could not be revived.
The dog’s body was taken to a local vet, ostensibly for autopsy, but the owner reclaimed the body before an autopsy could be performed. Therefore the cause of death could not be formally determined. Spokesman for the RSPCA, Michael Beatty, said the dog’s owner was extremely remorseful. “The situation regarding Rambo was tragic and is the classic scenario of a dog becoming entangled and not being able to reach water or shade,” Mr Beatty said. “What cannot be seen in the picture was that there was water and shade within reach if the dog had not become entangled. “It appears that the owner had only recently acquired the dog and expressed his extreme remorse. In the absence of an autopsy we have issued a stern warning but will not be prosecuting.” A neighbour said the same dog needed help in September or October, when it required food and water. “There was no fixed water container in the yard when we went over there,” the neighbour said. She said dogs have been permanently chained in the yard.
Blundell back in action MAYOR Peter Blundell returned to work with Southern Downs Regional Council on Monday. Cr Blundell said he is feeling well and rested following illness late last year. Cr Blundell was hospitalised in December for a blockage in a major artery of his heart. Mayor Peter Blundell. An angioplasty has rectified his condition and he said he was pleased to be “back in the chair”. “I’m feeling well and rested and ready to tackle 2014 with enthusiasm,” Cr Blundell said. “I’m also looking forward to renewing my usual community contact and getting up-to-date with all the issues and projects of the Christmas/ New Year period,” he said. Cr Blundell will officiate at the region’s Australia Day celebrations on Sunday.
Milder weather after heatwave
This distressing photograph was taken just 25 minutes before the dog expired. 113391_01
MILDER weather should greet locals for the Australia Day weekend, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. A ridge will develop on Thursday, pushing milder southeast winds over the state’s southeast. The cooler conditions will be welcomed after district temperatures topped 40 degree Celsius on Tuesday. Texas recorded 40.2 degree Celsius at 3pm Tuesday, while Goondiwindi reached 42.1 degrees. It was slightly milder in Warwick (38 degrees and Stanthorpe (35.5).and Tenterfield (35 degrees) The bureau said the weather should have eased overnight Wednesday with night temperatures falling to 20 degrees to 25 degrees and daytime temperatures reaching 33 degrees; to 39 degrees; ahead of the southeast change. Friday and Saturday’s maximums should be between 29 degrees and 34 degrees Celsius. 1113797-EP02-14

Energy company urges caution on email scam ERGON Energy has warned customers they may be targeted with phishing emails seeking personal information and payment of bogus electricity accounts. Ergon Group Manager Brett Milne said customers on the Darling Downs and North Queensland had received emails from a company called Pacific Gas & Electric
in the last few days. “These customers knew the emails were a scam and rang to alert Ergon. “There are probably substantially more customers who’ve also received the same email,” Mr Milne said. “To my knowledge there is no such electricity retailer as Pacific
Gas & Electric offering services in regional Queensland.” Mr Milne said the emails are designed to seek credit card and personal information for fraudulent use. “Phishing emails aren’t about buying something. They try to lure you by clicking on a link and entering your account and password in-

Kids to rule on way to school POLICE will ask children to become “backseat drivers” to ensure a safe passage to and from school. Children are being asked to monitor seat belt use, see that mobiles are switched to silent, direct parents and carers to drop-off zones, and other safety measures.
“We’re putting the kids in charge, giving them the responsibility of making sure the daily ritual of getting safely to school and home again is carried out,” Senior Constable Wendy Tamblyn of Warwick police said. “From making sure there’s enough time to get ready in
the morning without a rush to ensuring seatbelts are buckled up on the way home, we urge children to take charge,” Sen Const Tamblyn said. “Parents using mobile phones can expect a bit of nagging from the back seat, but that’s a good thing for safety.”
Get ready to take charge Hey kids you’re in charge of getting your parents and carers to school! This year the police want you to take control and make sure your family gets to and from school safely. Make sure your family is ready in plenty of time, so there’s no need to rush. Are you ready to go to school? Here’s what to do: BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS
ON THE WAY
POLICE officer Senior Constable Wendy Tamblyn says it’s a good idea to visit your school with your parents before the school year even starts. Take a drive or a walk around your school and find the school drop-off points where your Mum, Dad or carer can drop you off in the morning and pick you up after school. Find out where the school crossings are. If you ride a bike to school it’s a good idea to take your parents for a ride to find the safest route to and from your school, where the bike racks are and where you can safely leave your bike and helmet. (Local police will engrave or microdot your bicycle to deter thieves if you want.)
Firstly, make sure you, your driver and anyone else is sitting in the car with seat belts on before you start the journey. Maybe you could appoint your brother or sister the Seat Belt Officer to make sure everyone is buckled up every time. Secondly, make sure the driver’s mobile is on silent and out of reach. Distractions cause crashes! Thirdly, make sure your parents or carers know where the school drop-off zone is, and what the school zone speed limit is (a clue: it’s usually 40 kilometres per hour.) Fourthly, tell the driver to drop you off on the same side of the street as the school so you don’t have to cross roads. Fifthly, learn where the school crossing is for when you might need it.

Senior Constable Wendy Tamblyn of Warwick police.
ADOPT-A-COP When you’re at school find out who your school’s Adopt-A-Cop is. Tell your parents the school has an Adopt-A-Cop and their name. One day soon your school’s Adopt-A-Cop will give you lessons in road safety and personal safety. Make sure you ask plenty of questions.
COUNT A COP See how many police officers you can spot near your school. There’ll be lots of them around for the start of the school year, making sure nobody speeds, that school crossing rules are obeyed and drop-off zones are used correctly.
ON THE CROSSING Make sure you do what the traffic controllers (“lollipop ladies or lollipop men”) tell you to do. Remember when crossing a road to still look both left and right, and left again. Make sure you’re not listening to music. Take those earplugs out so you can hear if traffic is coming. Only cross when no vehicles are coming.
Grab a Fair Dinkum Bargain Storewide
Do you know what these traffic signs mean? CHILDREN, these signs help you get safely to school and home again. What do these signs mean? Fill in your answers, cut them out and take them to Senior Constable Wendy Tamblyn at Warwick Police Station. She will have a reward!
Computers, Electrical, Furniture, Bedding
ON YOUR BIKE If you ride to school, there are some special things to remember. 1 Wear your helmet and make sure the chin strap is done up. 2 Make sure you know the way to school and home again. 3 Make sure you have a safe bicycle, and that the brakes work. 4 Be alert, there might be traffic coming from in front or behind you. 5 Don’t ride and listen to music or use a mobile phone.

Police report A 44-YEAR-OLD woman was kicked, punched and then robbed by an unknown man after the victim intervened in a disturbance between the offender and another woman in Stanthorpe CBD at about 8pm on Friday 17 January. The offender then allegedly removed money from the victim’s handbag before leaving the scene. Stanthorpe Police are urging any witnesses to the incident to come forward.
Driving dills
GOING to the aid of a drink-driving mate isn’t a wise move if you’ve been drinking yourself. That’s the lesson one man learned in Stanthorpe after police noticed a vehicle doing a U-turn in one-way Victoria Street, Stanthorpe at about 1.30am on Saturday morning. The vehicle was intercepted and a 23-yearold male tourist was charged with drinkdriving after recording .102 per cent on the
breathalyser. His associate later drove to the police station to pick up his mate and take him home. Police detected the smell of liquor on his breath and he then subjected to the breathalyser, returning a reading of .187 per cent.
Drug offence A 20-YEAR-OLD Ballandean man was charged with possessing a small quantity of cannabis after police stopped his vehicle and detected the drugs at Applethorpe on 14 January.
Tyre bandits POLICE are seeking offenders who entered the premises of Crisp Coaches in Davadi Street, Stanthorpe sometime between the 14-17 January and stole a number of tyres. Offenders are believed to have scaled the fence before removing the tyres, estimated to be valued at approximately $5000.

The spin is in QUEENSLAND taxpayers are right to question why the Newman Government is wasting vast sums of money on itself by paying a team of outside “spin doctors” when there are more important spending priorities in local communities across our state. Queensland Treasury is hiring four public relations consultants from one of Brisbane’s biggest PR firms for at least six months - even though the department and Treasurer Tim Nicholls already have plenty of staff with similar skills. It has been reported that the PR firm in question charges a monthly $20,000 retainer and can hire out their staff for up to $280 an hour, so the cost to taxpayers is likely to be enormous. Previous governments have hired outside communications consultants but for specific projects such as share floats, not to do the jobs of political staffers already on the payroll. The four outside public relations officers engaged by the Newman Government, apparently with the approval of the Treasurer, are just an expensive, publicly-funded PR unit whose job will be to “spin” the government’s message in favour of assets sales in the lead-up to a state election. Why is it that after sacking almost 20,000 government workers and slashing local frontline services, the Newman Government can find buckets of money to pay four outsiders to massage its political messages? Treasurer Nicholls needs to explain why this stand-alone unit is needed and how much taxpayers’ money he will end up wasting on work that should be billed to the LNP. THE Bradfield Scheme project of decades past was to save the inland of Australia/Queensland from the terrifying droughts that are currently ravishing the inland of Queensland and New South Wales. Where has the brilliance of such thinking for a systematic arrangement of flood waters from the north of Queensland to alleviate the horror story that is emerging as drought strangles our men of the land?
Television from Charters Towers or personal experience from a worker makes for immediate and overdue attention to eliminating this indisputable cruelty to man and beast. The fireworks that excited the country at New Year’s appeared as absent-minded day-dreaming and waste of resources on a grand scale, when our best food producers are perishing along with their stock, for a reliable water source. The Bradfield Scheme must be activated immediately or Australia will Advance Where? Melba Morris, Allora.
Life in tourism I WHOLLY support the Warwick Chamber of Commerce in their efforts to reinvigorate the historic railway precinct in Warwick. As a tourism region so close to a major capital city our visitor numbers are very low compared to other ‘country escape’ regions in other states (eg Daylesford, Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley). If we want to become a serious tourist destination, and compete with the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast Hinterland and Sunshine Coast Hinterland we need to give the visitors a good reason to come and spend in our town. And if in the future, the railway precinct does become a VIC, art gallery, museum, coffee shop etc not only would we all, as a community, benefit from it, imagine how proud we would all be. The historic railway station is a beautiful building and deserves to be returned to its former glory and become a showpiece for the town. Imagine if the streetscape continued down Grafton Street with trees lining both sides of the road, leading the eyes and the feet, from the statue in the centre of Palmerin and Grafton right down to the old railway buildings. I realise this is all talk at the moment and the council hasn’t any plans for the buildings which are owned by QR, but, ‘from little things, big things grow’. If we want to be taken seriously as a tourism destination, and increase our visitor numbers, we need to look to the future and support organisations that have a positive and clear vision. Call for forest action By STEVE GRAY THE vast areas of state-owned land in Australia would be better managed under local control, a 40-year veteran of volunteer rural firefighting said. Geoff Hamilton is a Life Member of the Legume Rural Fire Brigade and he says much more needs to be done towards hazard reduction. “Australia has reached the stage now of being a time bomb ready to explode,” Mr Hamilton said. His call for more local say in preparations to limit bushfire damage has been backed by the vice-president of the Tenterfield Progress Association Richard Holland. Mr Holland said most bushfires “seem to originate in crown land, particularly state forest, timber reserves and national parks”. However government have laws limiting their liability for the damage such fires cause. Mr Hamilton said most National Parks should revert to State Forests and be grazed to limit the available fuel. “The (Queensland) Government should change the Rural Fire Act and hand back control to the shire councils,” he said. “Landowners should be encouraged
More controlled burning in forests and reserves would avoid high intensity bushfires, says Legume Rural Fire Brigade Life Member Geoff Hamilton. to do hazard reduction and have the local brigades assist,” Mr Hamilton said. He said hazard reduction when conditions are safe would save much of the destruction caused by severe bushfires. “The Aborigines are no fools as they
burnt often to make fresh grass for the wildlife to eat,” he said. Mr Holland said the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission into Black Saturday determined there had been a long-term failure to conduct adequate
fuel-reduction burning, and most of (Victoria’s) eight million hectares of public land was overgrown and highly susceptible to bushfires. However governments have statutory limitations of liability for the damage a bushfire does if it escapes state-owned land. Mr Holland said it seemed that a double standard exists. “If a private person starts or allows a fire to spread through negligence he is held liable for the damage the fire does,” he said. “However when the government does the same thing... they get off scott free. “The (Queensland) Government should stop pretending it can manage these lands if it really cannot, and allow the lands to lapse into commons and subsequently be claimed and divided up into private holdings. “Or at the very least, allow the communities most affected by these vast tracts of wilderness to go out and conduct their own fire management on those lands without being branded criminals and arsonists,” Mr Holland said.

Highway fatality A TRUCK driver was killed after his B-double left the New England Highway and crashed and burned near Dalveen early on Wednesday morning. The truck was carrying cooking oil and other bottled foodstuffs when it careered over a 10-metre embankment into the bush and burst into flames at about 3.45am. The driver was unable to escape and died at the scene. The driver was travelling north and a large section of
safety fencing on the opposite side of the road just south of the truck’s final resting place has been ripped out. One lane of the highway remained closed at noon. Police are investigating the cause of the crash. The truck was one of the 110-strong fleet operated by John L Pierce Pty Ltd, now in its 65th year of business. The company has depots in Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne, Toowoomba, and Brisbane.
The devastating scene of the B-double crash is being cleaned up after police have departed.

A NEW plum developed by scientists at Queensland’s Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) could join blueberries and cranberries as a super-food packed with antioxidants. The first commercial harvest of Queen Garnet plums (QGP) is now underway at the Good Rich Fruit Company’s orchard at Warroo. Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said the 75,000 QGP tree orchard was expected to yield 200 tonnes of the super plums. “Our scientists have found that the QGP has very high levels of anthocyanins which can have considerable health benefits,” Mr McVeigh said. “The health food market is growing and we are taking advantage of

Stay Sunsmart
Look up and live...
THE Cancer Council is reminding parents not to forget SunSmart essentials as school starts again. The council’s five recommended behaviours are to Slip on sun protective clothing, Slop on SPF 30 or above sunscreen, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat, Seek shade and Slide on wrap-around sunnies.
WITH more extreme heat on the way those working or transporting machinery near powerlines are being warned to look up and live. The hot temperatures can cause powerlines to expand and sag. Essential Energy spokesman Ben Williams said a long span of powerline need only expand a few centimetres to make a significant difference to the amount of clearance under it. “As the mercury climbs, powerline heights can change considerably,” he said. “Farmers, construction workers, earthmovers and even home handymen all need to be aware of powerlines above them when working and the potential for the wires to stretch due to the heat in the atmosphere. “Just because a machine or ladder might have passed safely under a powerline last week or even yesterday, doesn’t mean it will today,” he said. “Always check there is plenty of clearance under powerlines regardless of the weather or temperature.”

Watch water use One of David Howard’s 30 paintings that form iNASA. 113210
Out of this world WARWICK Art Gallery has a fascinating series of paintings on display to inspire young artists. iNASA is a series of 30 paintings, all parts of a single larger story as told by Sunshine Coast artist David Howard. Each painting shows a pair of helmeted astronauts and a mysterious third figure. Other motifs regularly appear throughout the series, and a storyline runs throughout. Mr Howard visited NASA, the US space agency, and he said the image of a human head in a space
helmet has always fascinated him. “The works contain diverse references to events in history and aspects of my life as lived in western culture,” he said. Full of colour and whimsy, iNASA would make a great first visit to an art gallery for the young. Mr Howard was in Warwick on Saturday to guide children through a painting workshop for Buds, the gallery’s creative kids’ club. iNASA is at the gallery until 2 February.
COMING EVENT: FROM 6 February the Warwick Art Gallery will hold an exhibition of lithographs by famed colonial artist Charles Conder. Conder immigrated to Australia in 1884 at the age of 17 and from April to October 1887 his signed drawings appeared weekly in the Illustrated Sydney News. The lithographs are some of Conder’s finest work. Included in the exhibition are a range of works from the Balzac set, invitation cards, and allegorical bohemian scenes as well as a collection of books, catalogues, exhibition invitations and research material.
WITH heatwave conditions returning to the Southern Downs, residents need to be aware of water restrictions. The Southern Downs Regional Council said water use across the Southern Downs during the last blast of hot weather was particularly high, with usage well above desired levels.Dams are lower than last year and there’s little prospect of them recharging significantly soon, considering the reduced level of rainfall last month, the direst December for the past 18 years. Stanthorpe only received 25 per cent of the average monthly rainfall in December, very close to the lowest level during the past 50 years of records. Council’s permanent water restrictions mean that residents in odd number or no number properties can water outdoors on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays anytime except between 10am and 4pm while residents in even number properties can water on Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays anytime except between 10am and 4pm. The council has a number of factsheets on its website that give useful information on saving water and using water wisely. While there is currently no thought of more stringent water restrictions council is constantly monitoring the situation and urges everyone to be waterwise.

New era at family venue THE Stockyard Hotel has been through many ups and downs over the past few years but new proprietors, George and Ann Smith, believe they can make it into a popular venue once more for people to meet and share a meal and a drink. George and Ann have considerable experience in the hospitality industry, particularly in Inglewood where they run the Commercial Hotel, the Olympic Motel and Lake Roadhouse. After a total refurbishment of the premises taking a couple of months, the doors opened on Monday. Besides the obvious changes to the bar and dining area, the beergarden has been re-opened. It seats over 50 people and has a jukebox and a karaoke machine installed. Live entertainment in the beergarden is planned to start soon. One of their first decisions was to declare the venue poker machine free in order to appeal to family groups. Families will also be impressed with the new dining area which is air conditioned and seats 60 people. Dee, the Head Chef, will look after you with great value meals for the whole family including steaks, grills, fish and chicken, plus meals for children too.
The Stockyard Hotel’s cheery dining room and fun pool table make this a great place to share a meal with family or friends.
The dining room is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Then there’s the familyfriendly games room with jukebox, darts boards, pool table and a pinball machine to help make your visit really enjoyable. Wednesday nights is Members Draw which starts at $500. Every Thursday night is pool competition night from 7.30 with no entry fee. Weekly pot draws are also held. George and Ann have a refreshing attitude. “If there’s a complaint, we listen and will fix it,” they say. They want the Stockyard to be the place for everyone to have fun and it’s off to a really good
start, judging by the people calling in so far this week. Go down and see for yourself. The Stockyard Hotel is on the corner of Percy and Lyons Streets in Warwick.

Men’s Shed hears siren’s call ALLORA’S Fire Station has gained a new lease on life and will transform itself into the local Men’s Shed. The Southern Downs Regional Council recently granted a lease over the Herbert Street property and the group behind the proposal will hold its first official meeting in their new premises on Saturday. Plans are already underway to change the building’s layout to cater for its new purpose. These include a roofed and paved area
at the rear of the building, a repaint, landscaping and vegetable garden. A fireplace and outdoor oven may follow. Members have already expressed interest in vehicle restoration and bush furniture construction. Interim president of the Men’s Shed, Danny Daniels, said an official opening is likely in the future, including an Open Day. The group have been active in the community since it formed about six months ago,
Mr Daniels said. They have run sausage sizzles and a money wheel to raise funds and spoken to local groups about the concept of a Men’s Shed. Mr Daniels said while not a service club like Rotary, Apex or Lions, the Men’s Shed looked forward to assisting in the community. Saturday’s inaugural meeting in the new premises at 9am will feature Bill Challen from the Men’s Shed in Glen Innes.

Celebrating past CALLING all collectors and historical enthusiasts. The place to be this weekend is the Allora Showgrounds where the Warwick Veteran and Vintage Vehicle Club are hosting the 19th annual Allora Heritage Weekend. There will be all sorts of “big boy’s toys” on display for young and old. Main features are the cars, tractors, trucks and stationary engines, but there are also smaller displays of bikes, antiques and horse-drawn machinery to be admired. People don’t have to be a motoring or machinery expert to appreciate the time, money and effort that these collectors have spent over the years restoring these vehicles and machines to their former glory. Some pieces may be judged as being brought back to a state even better than when they were new. The Warwick Veteran and Vintage Vehicle Club, which is celebrating is 40th year, was formed in February 1974 by Eddie Marshall who is the current day president. “I put an ad in the paper looking for people with the same interest as mine, a few people answered it and here we are today still going strong,” Mr Marshall said. “The purpose of the club is the restoration and preservation of our cars of yesteryear. This now includes trucks, tractors, stationary engines even kids’
Car, bikes, tractors, machines, Allora has it all. 113393 bikes and trikes,” he said. “Interest in this event grows each year, we even have people travelling from as far as Western Australia.” For those looking for other forms of entertainment, there will be bush poetry to enjoy and the country music club will be on the grounds to get your toes tapping. A cent sale will be held on the Saturday with proceeds going to the Warwick Disability Support Group, and there will be food and drinks available all weekend. It’s worth sticking around Saturday night, as Eddie Marshall has donated a saw blade with the image of Slim Dusty embossed on it which will be auctioned also to raise money
for the Warwick Disability Support group. If that isn’t enough, to inspire you to pack the kids in the car, how about checking out the swap meet also held over Saturday and Sunday. Bring along unwanted items. They could be someone else’s treasures or find some new treasures for yourself. The best way to spend the Australia Day weekend is at the Allora Heritage Weekend, held at the Allora Showgrounds on the New England Highway. For more information call Eddie Marshall on 4661 1835. For swap meet information, call Lyle 0409 766 288 or for camping information, call 4697 3742.

7 Day TV Guide Alison joined Curves Complete in January 2013 weighing 110.5kg. She now weighs an amazing 81.3kg. Alison’s Story – “I joined Curves Complete because I was overweight and very unwell. It was both difficult and scary to walk up those stairs for the very first time, but after speaking with a staff member she made me feel comfortable and I liked the idea of a complete package of diet, exercise and support. I have been overweight all my life and never exercised and the thought of going to a gym horrified me. I have met so many friendly, lovely people at Curves, who are all on their own personal journey. I have good days and bad days and sometimes I ache all over and feel tired but I tell myself I can do this. I was so excited the day I stepped on the scales and weighed less than 100kg, then less than 90kg. I don’t remember the last time I weighed 90kg. I have dropped 4 dress sizes and I have had to buy a new wardrobe. I have thrown away my larger clothes as I never want to be heading for a size 24 again. I am looking forward to losing more weight and going clothes shopping. I am half way on my journey and am taking one week at a time and making small achievable goals. My family and friends are proud of me and I am just amazed at myself. The support and encouragement given to me from the coaching staff at Curves has been wonderful, my thanks goes to them for all their advice and patience. I couldn’t have gotten this far on my own.” See Alison’s before and after photos on the left. For further details, phone Curves Warwick on 07 4661 4892 or call into Level 1/95 Palmerin Street.

Curves Warwick Success Story
Reality restored for savvy Sarah Beeny’s Restoration Nightmare ABC1, Wednesday, 22 January, 9.20pm
No, it seems Sarah Beeny and husband, artist Graham Swift, don’t do anything by half measures (they have four kids as well and a lot of the work was put in while she was pregnant with the youngest two). The little fixer-upper these two take on is a stunning listed Georgian stately home which hasn’t been occupied for quite some time. It is a massive undertaking as the couple try to not only restore the 97room Rise Hall (you know it’s big when
they call it a Hall) but also prepare it to pay it’s own way as a wedding venue. The Hall has every type of rot known to man (actually I didn’t know there were different types of rot until this show) and, of course, she has a small (for the project) budget and a tight (probably unrealistic) timetable. And, of course, like us all, she has a council to keep happy - only for Beeny her high profile does more harm then good when it comes to negotiating. - Tania Phillips

THERE is something rather calming and reassuring about watching Sarah Beeny’s Restoration Nightmare - particularly if you’re struggling to renovate your own home. Beeny, who became a property developer at the age of 24 and has fronted numerous British television shows from Property Ladder to Help! My House Is
Falling Down, has built a reputation on being no-nonsense and thinking with her head not her heart when it comes to restoring properties. She seems to be everything most of us aren’t in the home renovation game, she has all the sensible solutions and everything seems to go her way. Until, it seems, it comes to her own home! Mind you, the home we’re talking about isn’t a little ’50s bungalow in need of a bit of paint and maybe a wall taking out!

with Sudhir ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20) The Leo Moon gives some respite early in the week. Aside from that, you have your work cut out for you. By being hard-nosed, a thousand unruly emotions are released. By being overly-emotional, the temptation to be hard-nosed increases. Find middle ground as soon as possible. TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) All you want is to get cosy, put your slippers on and put your feet up. Life isn’t looking like it is about to provide for your wishes so easily. As Pluto dances with Venus, so some pretty solid existential questions arise. Do your values need a rejig? Or do you need to get back to them? GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) Opposition early in the week, pulls you out of indifference and fires you up. By being challenged, all that is meaningful to you gets another burst of passion. With Mercury now sailing on the high winds of Aquarius, you are likely to be full of wild ideas and willing to embrace change. CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22) Stick with what is working. There are plenty of dogfights to get into if you wish. None of them are likely to deliver satisfaction. By choosing wisely, you will get a taste of the strength that comes from being able to acknowledge difference. Don’t let yourself be homogenised. LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22) The Moon lights up the early part of the week. She provokes you to follow your heart and say no to your mind. Relationships are important. They need your heart. Not everyone is bathing in equilibrium this week, but you are. This will be of great help to those who are bewildered. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) The heat is not on you. This allows you space to consider your options. Brainstorm as wildly as you can. By putting all sorts of options on the table, a feeling of great freedom and possibility will arise. Take advantage of Mercury’s presence in Aquarius, to extend your horizons. LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23) The more you work to hold the middle ground, the more others get inflamed and you find yourself in the mother of all controversies. Rather than playing innocent and going to ground, use this as an opportunity to access your rather formidable, though often unsung, strength. SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) Strangely, it is often when we come to terms with the fact of our natural limitations, that we feel the most expansive and unlimited. Discipline need not be a yoke imposed. It can be a form to be filled with delight. Venus is offering you delight on a tray, should you wish to take it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) Imagine your heart to be as vast as the ocean. We are all fishes swimming around in it. With this kind of perspective you will be able to accept and go with the challenges that life is offering like fruit with your muesli. The key is clearly to incarnate an overarching sense of friendliness. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) Venus and Pluto are dancing around, bringing delight to difficulty. This doesn’t mean that you delight in difficulty. It means that you find the delight that has been buried unseen in the difficulties you’ve been facing. Resolve what needs to be resolved, at least in your own heart. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) Mercury, the planet of insight, is dancing around in Aquarius. He brings a wave of new ideas. Somewhere along the line you will have to sort out the really good ideas, from those that are way out past the fence-line, over there on left field. First, be rejuvenated by letting everything in. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) Though others have a hard time imagining how you could be grounded, you are. In this moment, others are struggling but you are laughing. Perhaps you have a better sense of what is going on than is generally realised. With a powerful worldview, difficulties can be put in their place.

Genuine delight at win The
into the game when they came to the crease, dismissed for a dismal 60 runs. Star of the show with the ball was Ross Lupton who finished with 5/19. Lihou was not to be outdone. He knocked over four of the Wanderers batsmen.

SOMETIMES life bowls you a curve ball that you just need to deal with. If you do, sometimes you come out the other end the better for it. Mitchell Johnson is certainly experiencing one of those moments. There could not have been one cricket enthusiast who was not moved to see Johnson receive the Allan Border Medal on Monday night. Things haven’t always been this rosy for Johnson and all of those facts are there on the record for the public to judge. What impressed me most watching the telecast on Monday night was the sheer delight, excitement and joy on the faces of his teammates when the result was announced. This was not a forced, stiff upper lip - he deserved it more than me (not) reaction. It was genuine pleasure in the success of a team-mate who has managed to turn things around for himself and also for his country. It was a rare window of opportunity to glimpse the Australian team’s reaction in an unguarded moment. Pity they didn’t give the award to coaches because if Mitch Johnson’s name hadn’t been announced I think it should have been Darren Lehmann collecting the gong. How good was it to see a female cricketer inducted into the Hall of Fame. Belinda Green is someone who changed women’s cricket forever. And Mark Waugh - how quickly we tend to forget the brilliance of the man who could so easily have danced in his brother’s shadow but instead chose to play the game the only way he knew how. His way, and that was both special and successful. The last of the One Day Internationals await. But let’s not get too excited South Africa will be tough but - what the heck - Bring on South Africa. - Casey
Hulks XI are sure to have a say in the result of the Australia Day Carnival in Warwick. elaide, New Zealand and various regional centres in Queensland and northern NSW. Competition for prize-money is not the main motivation for all sides but there are several teams who take the competition quite seriously but still have plenty of fun. The draw for the first two days has been released with teams playing at a variety of venues; some often prove challenging which all adds to the entertainment value of the games. The day three draw will be released following the completion of play on day two and the announcement of the teams through to the semifinals. The final will commence at 1pm at Slade Park. Having been involved with this carnival over a long number of years firstly as a player and then umpire, I can say with some authority that it is a great weekend. The cricket is entertaining, the company outstanding and I always found the drinks cold and plentiful. If you are not involved as a player, I suggest you get along to any one of the venues and enjoy a feast of fun cricket.
SWEET SUCCESS FOR VINEGAR KING IAN Henderson may be Stanthorpe’s vinegar king but there was nothing sour about his performance in the recent Federation Cup played over three rounds at the Stanthorpe Golf Club.
PADDING UP FOR AUSTRALIA DAY THE organising committee for the Warwick Australia Day Cricket Carnival is fine-tuning preparations for this weekend’s three-day carnival and all looks to be in readiness for another successful carnival. The big weekend of cricket is always a chance for family reunions with many people travelling back to Warwick to play each year. 2014 will be no exception. One of the people charged with organising the event again this year is Col O’Brien. O’Brien says that once again there will be players from North Queensland, Brisbane, Sydney, Ad-

Henderson played sweetly in the first two rounds doing enough to get his name inscribed on the cup - his first major win since taking up the game recently. With the best two of three rounds counting towards the event Henderson finished with a nett 65 in each of his first two rounds. In Saturday’s event, a stroke round, Peter Hines collected first place after a countback. Hines and Angelo Maugeri both returned nett 65 for the round. Pin shots went to Adam Clark at 3/12 and Ian Harvey at 17. Pro-pins won by Bill Pyne at 1/10, Aaron Simmers at 5/14 and Stephen Kay at 9/18. The run down went to nett 70. The ladies’ competition was a one-sided affair, with Linda Kelly taking top spot with nett 66. Runner-up was Kay Webb with nett 70 on a countback. Kay also collected the pin at 3/12 and the approach at 17. The ladies’ run down went to nett 70. In matchplay, the clash of the lefties resulted in Richard Reardon progressing to the next round after he outlasted Tom Fittock. This Saturday is a medley 4BBB stableford. It is a special Australia Day event with awards and special prize for best dressed pair on the day which is sponsored by Tom and Tric Fittock. Shotgun start at 11.30am. The new GA Slope handicap system begins this weekend.
INGLEWOOD AT GUNDY? INGLEWOOD at Goondiwindi - No we are not suggesting Inglewood has relocated. The feature event on this weekend’s Great Aussie Race Day at the Goondiwindi Race Club is the Inglewood Cup. The Inglewood Cup feature is now in its third year after the Inglewood Chamber of Commerce re-invigorated the concept and once again, a good crowd is predicted at the opener of the Great Aussie Festivities Weekend. Racing will commence at 2pm with the five-event program expecting good nominations. With scorching conditions currently being experienced across the region, predictions of a cooler change have been very welcome. Organisers, however, are taking no chances and in case the predictions are incorrect there will be plenty of tents and undercover facilities and extra watering points available for the horses, which are paramount in summer racing. “The on-course stables will all be operating from the bore and the track proper by town supply so there should be no shortage of water,” president Michael Watt explained. “It was extremely hot last year and we got through so we don’t envisage any problems this year either.” The club is gearing up for another bumper crowd.
RSL PUT ON PRESSURE RSL had a comprehensive win over Wanderers last weekend and picked up two bonus points for the effort. The win makes things interesting on the premiership ladder as the season draws closer to its conclusion.RSL had first use of the wicket and in a good display of batting from their recognised batsmen posted a score of 265 from their 40 overs. The experience of Duane Lihou and Jason Lawer was evident as they guided the team to a good total with scores of 65 and 44. They were well supported by Ross Lupton and captain Todd Brady. RSL batsmen were never allowed to get
POPULAR Stanthorpe golfer Bob Watts was in the winner’s circle on Sunday at Sporters. Watts picked up the main prize and also took out the pin shot on the 17th. Runner-up was Phil Zikan and the rundowns went to Mark Lynam and David McPaul. Brendon Barker had the best gross and Paul Byrne had the pin shot on the 12th. Buster Pettiford picked up the Pro pin. Phil Zikan and Angelo Maugeri each went home with smiles on their faces and a meat tray in hand. A reminder for all Sporters that tee-off time is now 8am-8.30am.
RANGE OPEN FOR AUSTRALIA DAY WEEKEND THE Inglewood SSAA range will be open all this Australia Day weekend. There was talk of perhaps holding a colonial muzzle loading shoot, however the scheduled event for Sunday is pistol, action pistol, metallic silhouette and sporting clays. A snippet of good news from the club is that the New South Wales has acted upon an application submitted last year to have the range accepted as an Approved Range under their Act for categories AB and H. Any NSW shooter will now be able to shoot at the Inglewood SSAA range and be recognised as an approved shoot for their licencing requirements. For the benefit of shoot captains who are responsible for the maintenance of their respective ranges, the proposed programs until the end of June follow: First Sunday Morning - Clays and benchrest rimfire. Afternoon - Clays and pistol practice. Second Sunday Morning - Muzzle loading and benchrest rimfire. Afternoon - Single action and benchrest centrefire. Third Sunday Morning - Benchrest rimfire and pistol practice. Monthly meeting at lunch Afternoon - Benchrest centrefire and pistol 25m and 50m. Fourth Sunday Morning - Action pistol. Afternoon - Metallic silhouette pistol and sporting clays/5 stand.
SOUTHS STUMBLE AFTER a lacklustre performance at their last outing, Souths - who still sit at the top of the Stanthorpe Cricket Association leaderboard - would have been hoping for a win last weekend when they played Valleys. An excellent bowling performance from the Valley bowlers had Souths on the ropes. Only three of Souths batsmen were able to reach double figures. Dan Cameron (14), Dave Burgess (11) and Matthew Hendry top scored with 26. The end came quickly for Souths - all out in the 29th over for only 106 runs. Chasing the moderate total, Valleys always looked in command. They easily accounted for the moderate total but did lose six wickets on their way to an easy win collecting bonus points for their efforts.
DEEPWATER SUCCESS THE tiny town of Deepwater swelled last weekend for the annual deepwater race meeting. Long known for its ability to end a drought, the committee were delighted to get through the afternoon without any weather issues. Last year the race meeting was abandoned following a huge electrical storm and on several other occasions the meeting has been called off because of wet conditions. This year they did not manage to break the drought but no-one was complaining about that - at least on Saturday. The annual meeting draws visitors from far afield and has a rich history dating back more than a century.

Local Sport SWINGING FROM THE RAFTERS
Eventual Cup winner Rhodonite in the hot pink colours begins a barnstorming run down the centre of the track to narrowly beat front-runner Rioquialo.
Palara ridden by Ben Looker finishes well to win race one at Deepwater. Records dating back to the start of racing in the area are sketchy however it is believed that 2014 marked its 138th year. The grandstand, built back in the 1900s, swelled with onlookers keen to take in the big six-race card and keep out of the heat last Saturday. Racing was keenly contested - as was the popular Fashions on the Field competition. Owners and trainers brought horses from Ipswich, Warwick, Grafton, Inverell, Armidale and Tamworth. The meeting opened with the running of the Elders Glen Innes Maiden over 1100 metres. The event was won in fine style by the Inverell trained Palara. In the second race Armidale gallopers Cabriole and Mr Giggles proved too strong for the Ipswich visitor Let’s Command. It was a good win for the Robert Knighttrained winner who lumped 61kg to victory after apprentice Matthew Powell’s claim of 2.52 kg. The third race was won by Grafton visitor Cadillac Jack, second favourite in the race. The
Girls on the Avenue was a popular winner of race six the Roberts and Morrow Class 1 and Maiden Plate.
Winner of the Deepwater Cup Rhodonite shows now signs of his 11 years as connections Lea Selby and jockey Vad Bolozhinski discuss the gelding’s win. win gave popular hoop Ben Looker a double for the meeting. Looker was successful on the first winner. Ten-year-old galloper Rhodonite showed no signs of his years when he finished too strongly
for pre-race favourite Rioqualo. Rhodonite is owned and trained in Armidale by Lea Selby who admitted that the horse does little work on the track but plenty of trail miles and lots of swimming. Fast finishing galloper Za Knight finished over the top of the Warwick owned and trained Boot Shaker in the TDG Associates/West Lawn Finance Benchmark Handicap. Boot Shaker looked the winner at the top of the short straight, but as with most winners on Saturday Za Knight swept to the lead in the closing stages. Girls on the Avenue won the last for Toowoomba trainer John smith and jockey Todd Banks. The big crowd was just another reminder to racing officials of the popularity of country racing.
MOST parents and grandparents would be horrified if they received word their offspring was swinging from the ceilings. Not so Barry and Roz Brunckhorst, who are shouting from the rooftops news that their granddaughter Mikayla Adams is about to do just that. The 17-year-old will shortly join an elite group of 25 performers from throughout Australia and overseas studying at the National Institute of Circus Arts in Melbourne. Mikayla is set to turn her passion for the sport of gymnastics into a career and will be hoping to finish her degree and gain a spot in the prestigious Circus Oz troupe or even Cirque Du Soleil.
MEN OF LEAGUE FUNCTION COMING TO TENTERFIELD RUGBY League followers from across the Southern Downs Region and NSW tablelands are invited to support the upcoming Men of League function being held in at the Tenterfield Golf Club on 15 February. Organiser, well known Tenterfield football identity Graham (Butch) Smith, has lured football legend Tommy Raudonikis to the event. Tommy may have a few nervous moments when he realises just how close he is to Maroon territory but the crowd are sure to be entertained. Raudonikis will share the stage with wellknown former Maroons Wally Fullerton-Smith, Colin Scott and Allora’s Greg Platz. Keeping Raudonikis company in the Blue corner will be John Peard. The group will be on hand for a Charity Golf Day prior to the dinner at the Golf Club. The Men of League organisation does remarkable work caring for those in the Rugby League community (not necessarily players) who have fallen on hard times or are suffering illness. Helping out your mates has been a huge part of Rugby League since its inception. It was on this premise that the Men of League Foundation was established in 2002 by Jim Hall and Max Brown and president Ron Coote. Tickets can be booked by contacting Butch Smith 0429 702 669 or email butch.s@bigpond. net.au. Shapes as a day and night not to be missed.
