In response to the survey results, state Planning Minister Matthew Guy told the Independent: “There is more supply in Melbourne than any time during the last 15 years”. “We’re doing everything we can to solve this issue,” he said. “It’s not our problem, we didn’t create it, the previous Labor Government did. The Coalition Government is trying to fix it.” Mr Guy said the government’s Urban Development Program indicated Geelong had more than enough land for future population growth. “We now have a complete picture for Victoria. It’s clear that there is plenty of land for future development and plans to maintain supply. “It is critical that we continue to identify land to drive industry, jobs and housing growth in regional centres.” Geelong council’s planning portfolio holder, Rod Macdonald, said part of the city’s affordability issue was the way in which land supply was calculated. “Traditional methods say we have 10 years supply but it doesn’t take account of the actual situation; land may be banked, it may be limited by developers and lack of services might delay it’s availability. “We have to look more closely at how we measure the availability of land and work more closely with state and federal governments to better understand demand. “We’ve got to work harder at making homes more affordable.”
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AN INTERNATIONAL survey showing Geelong among the least-affordable housing markets in the world has blamed “restrictive land use policies”. Geelong is less affordable than New York and the same as London, according to the 10th Annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey. The survey ranked Geelong at 7.3, based on its median housing price of $405,000 and median household income of $55,700. The survey deemed ratings of 5.1 and over as “severely unaffordable”. Ratings of 4.1 to 5.0 and 3.1 to 4.0 were “seriously” and “moderately” unaffordable respectively, while affordable housing rated 3.0 and under. Geelong’s ranking was part of an overall housing affordability “deterioration” across Australia during the past decade, the survey found. “Restrictive land use policies” across Australia’s 25 severely unaffordable markets, led by Sydney and Melbourne, were blamed. “This has invariably been associated with urban containment policy and is most evident in Australia,” the survey said. “The key to preserving housing affordability is a competitive land supply, which appears to be incompatible with urban containment policy.” The most-affordable major metropolitan market was Pittsburgh, in the United States, at 2.3, while the least affordable was Hong Kong, its 14.9 rating the highest recorded in the 10

A LEADING Geelong nightclub operator has warned that introducing late-night weekend bus services from Melbourne to Geelong would give a free kick to the opposition. Mr Gregorio, who runs Eureka and Home House nightclubs, said the plan appeared to oppose a push to revitalise central Geelong. The state Labor plan would run buses from Southern Cross Station to regional centres, returning at 2am on weekends. The initiative would operate
on a 12-month trial from New Year’s Eve. But Mr Gregorio, vice-president of Geelong Nightlife Association, said the initiative would drain vital dollars from the local economy and create trouble on the city’s streets when revellers returned. “Dumping people on our streets, drunk and intoxicated at 2.30am after a big night out in Melbourne, is just not the way to go.” Mr Gregorio estimated that Geelong nightclubs was already losing up to 1000 patrons a week to Melbourne.
“There needs to be a concentrated, combined push to turn this around,” he said. “We need to make it happen for the heart of the city to prosper – we don’t need to give Melbourne a free kick.” Mr Gregorio said Geelong needed more nightlife to cater for a massive influx of Deakin University students, whose numbers would rise from 6400 to 20,000 by 2020. “We have to ensure that we have a vibrant, exciting city centre where they can go to be entertained or they’ll head elsewhere and take their money with them.”

Blitz targets our roads By PAUL MILLAR POLICE will blitz Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula in a bid to prevent road carnage over the Australia Day long weekend. Road Policing Command’s Robert Hill told the Independent Geelong was one of several ‘’hotspots” where police would concentrate their efforts as part of Operation Amity. The assistant commissioner said the Australia Day weekend was one of the busiest times for motorists, with many heading to beachside destinations for short breaks and others returning home after summer holidays. “We have had significant road

Over the past five years Victoria has recorded 14 fatalities and 352 serious injury collisions during the Australia Day weekend. “Independent research shows that if every driver dropped just one kilometre per hour off their average speed we could save 15 lives every year,” Assistant Commissioner Hill said.
“That’s 15 families who would be spared the heartache of losing a loved one.’’ Major roads packed with traffic, combined with alcohol and fatigue, could create a deadly set of circumstances, he warned. “This weekend we will be focusing our attention on areas that are expected to attract high volumes of traffic, such as the Mornington Peninsula and Geelong,” he said. “Don’t spoil the weekend by making stupid decisions and getting behind the wheel. “Speed limits exist for a reason and they will be enforced.”

Jobs exported QANTAS will move maintenance jobs from Avalon Airport to Hong Kong, the airline has confirmed. Qantas announced in November it would close its Avalon heavy maintenance facility but told staff this week their jobs would go to Asia at the end of March.

Registrations open for McKellar Centre’s golf day REGISTRATIONS have opened for golfers to help patients get over their injuries at the region’s peak public rehabilitation facility. The 19th annual McKellar Centre Charity Golf Day has places for 120 players at 13th Beach on Friday 21 March. Teams of four play an 18-hole Ambrose competition with oncourse catering and novelty holes. Afterward they enjoy a gourmet luncheon in the 13th Beach clubhouse with live auctions, prizes and other activities.
The golf day has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the North Geelong centre over the years. Proceeds have helped pay for vital equipment and facilities such as a hydrotherapy pool, diagnostic technology and a Town Centre outdoor area. Region braces for ‘scorchers’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG faces a mini-repeat of last week’s heatwave, with consecutive 38C and 39C days predicted for Monday and Tuesday. THE fresh wave of heat comes as fire crews around the region this week finished cleaning up after a spate of grass and building fires. The hot days are part of a predicted extended fire season this year, exacerbated by limited rain. Geelong Weather Services’ Lindsay Smail said Monday and Tuesday would be scorchers but slightly cooler than last week’s extreme conditions when temperatures peaked in the mid-40s. “But sometimes a 38 or 39 is likely to turn into a 40,” he said. “It’s going to be hot but this is not unprecedented in Geelong - it
might even be two or three days of heat.” Mr Smail said 2014’s heatwave still fell short of blistering 1908 conditions when the region suffered two heatwaves amid 15 days over 30C and five over 40C. The Bureau of Meteorology said this week that last week’s heatwave was one of the most intense to hit the country in the past 100 years. “One of the most significant multi-day heatwaves on record affected southeast Australia over the period from 13 to 18 January 2014,” the bureau said. “Temperatures remained high (and) 46°C was exceeded in Victoria on both the 15th and the 17th, 46.3°C at Avalon. “It ranked alongside the heatwaves of January-February 2009,
January 1939 and January 1908 as the most significant multi-day heatwaves on record.” CFA Geelong operations manager Gerry Verdoorn said the region could be in for a “torrid time”. “Associated with the high temperatures is the potential for strong winds and that will create a high fire risk,” Mr Verdoorn said. Geelong was still providing support to the Grampians but had sufficient CFA personnel left to cover the region, he said. “While it’s cool people should to draw breath and review their fire plans and fire risk and make sure they have everything in place. Everything’s so dry that we need to be careful for another month or two.”

Brownlow plaques find his home By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN WHEN Inger and Simon Neylon were house-hunting two and a half years ago, a cute weatherboard in East Geelong caught their eye. For Cats fan Simon, it had an added attraction as the former residence of Geelong and Australian Rules legend Charles Brownlow and wife Matilda. For US-born Inger, though, it marked a steep footy learning curve.
“It was actually advertised as the Brownlow house, so we knew what we were getting into when we purchased it,” she said. “It had been passed down as the Brownlow house from owner to owner, so we were excited to be able to move in. “When we mention to people where we live, 60 or 70 per cent of them recognise it and say, ’Oh, that’s the Brownlow house’.
“I have been to games but I’m quite new to it, so it’s quite an experience,” Inger confessed. “But I do understand the significant role Charles Brownlow played in the history of the game.” Geelong Football Club approached the couple with the idea of placing a plaque at the front of the house and another inside. They readily agreed.

Coast parking ‘review’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN TIME limits, “attendants” and a parkand-ride system have been mooted as solutions to Surf Coast’s annual summer beach car parking congestion. Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC) suggested the options in a report on coastal transport, seeking community feedback. One option suggested restricting parking at popular beaches to four hours to increased the turnover of spaces. The report suggested parking on residential streets within five minutes’ walk of beaches could be restricted to two hours, with residents and their visitors exempted. “The parking restrictions would need to be regularly enforced to ensure that they are effective,” the report said. Seventy per cent of beachgoers stayed for between three and five hours and only four per cent reamined longer, the report said. “Allowing people to park at the beach all day (and longer) is an inequitable and inefficient use of scarce resources.” “There is anecdotal evidence to suggest that some people park a vehicle at the beach for weeks at a time and use it as a storage locker for beach equipment.” A park-and-ride system could operate from a satellite car park and catch a bus to the beach, the report said. “Such a system is unlikely to be popular initially due to perceived inconvenience.” Providing drop-off bays at popular beaches and marking out spaces even in unsealed car parks could prevent “indiscriminate” parking, possibly directed by attendants.
THE region’s water supply has begun falling after hitting a high at the end of November. Barwon Water figures showed the storages at 86.1 per cent of capacity this week after six weeks of decline. The storages reached 92.7 per cent capacity in the last week of November. Consumption over the past week reached almost a billion litres.

The report said the pressure was increasing on car parking at peak demand times and at popular beaches, with visitors reporting more difficulty in finding a parking space. “During peak holiday season, this can lead to congestion and indiscriminate parking behaviour.” The report said coastal areas were among the most highly visited and intensively used in Victoria, with visitation expected to increase because of

growing populations in Geelong and Melbourne’s western suburbs. A strategy was needed to manage visitor demand, enable convenient access to the beach, enable emergency access, limit impact on the coastal environment and minimise inconvenience to
local residents and traders, the report said. The report also made reference to parking “pricing” but did not mention meters as an option. The Independent revealed in 2008 that GORCC wanted to install meters in beach car parks at Torquay. The plan failed amid community opposition, including calls for the committee to be disbanded. The survey is available online and at the GORCC office, Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park and Lorne Foreshore Caravan Park. The survey closes 9 February.

FORMER Geelong mayor John Mitchell received almost $40,000 in donations to his campaign for November’s mayoral election, City Hall documents have revealed. The donation returns lodged at City Hall show Mr Mitchell received $20,000 from Fast Office Supplies, $15,000 from C Mitchell and $4500 from P Wight. Mr Mitchell, a locomotive driver who maintained a second job with the railways while serving four years as mayor until 2012, finished fifth in the field of 16.
The next highest donation was for Rodger Marsden, an engineer at the former Shire of Corio, who received $11,699 from 10 benefactors. Architect Greg Jones, who finished last in the poll, had the next highest return with $5750. They were the only three candidates who reported donations under the disclosure declaration. Election winner Mayor Darryn Lyons registered “N/A” - not applicable - on his return. Former mayor Ken Jarvis, whose campaign was supported with regular full-page advertisements financed by local business-
men including Frank Costa, also declared “N/A”. Mr Jarvis earlier stated the advertisements were run without his knowledge. The remaining candidates also registered “N/A”. Ratepayers spent more than $500,000 on the byelection to find a replacement for Keith Fagg who quit after nine months into his four-year term as Geelong’s first directly elected mayor. He later cited stress for his resignation. Cr Lyons won with a primary vote of 30 per cent, double his closest rival.

Jobs going, fear rising By PAUL MILLAR UNCERTAINTY surrounding the sale of Shell’s Geelong refinery and the clouded future of Alcoa’s Point Henry plant is starting to bite. Reports this week indicated that potential buyers of the ageing Norlane refinery were down to two but a union organiser said local contractors were already losing their jobs as employers became increasingly concerned about future projects. A Shell spokesman said employees, unions and the community working together to attract a suitable buyer was the best chance of a sale. “As we have previously discussed with all our employees, there are various phases of a sale process and at this point in time we cannot unfortunately communicate with our employees and the community,” he said. But Matt McPhee, a local Australian Manufacturing Workers Union organiser, said that a failure to communicate was already costing jobs.

He said several workers at a Downer EDi Engineering plant in Norlane had been told insufficient work was available to keep them employed. The plant worked on projects for the refinery, the smelter and Alcoa’s Anglesea power station, he said. “It’s just the nature of the industry in Geelong at the moment.” A Downer spokesman confirmed the company had made redundant nine of its 25 workers in Geelong. Mr McPhee expected more pain, with firms struggling to keep staff because of uncertainty over future projects. Shell’s new chief, Ben van Beurden recently made potential refinery buyers aware of a massive downgrade in company profits. Mr McPhee was worried about the impact on local jobs if the 60-year-old refinery failed to sell and Point Henry’s smelter closes. “I don’t think people fully understand what an impact this will have on Geelong.”

Costa, MP on panel for $100m growth funding GEELONG is poised for funding windfalls, with two representatives on a panel advising a $100 million regional growth fund. Prominent Geelong businessmen Frank Costa and Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson attended a Victorian Economic Review Panel meeting on Wednesday to “inform the design” of the federal fund. The seven-member panel also includes upper house MP Michael Ronaldson, who in opposition anointed himself the “Patron senator” for the seat of Corio. Ms Henderson said Federal Government was aiming the fund at “regions impacted by a downturn in manufacturing”.
The panel was “particularly interested” in assisting industries covering pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, food processing, information and communication technologies and advanced manufacturing, she said. Each industry has a presence in Geelong. “The panel will have a strong Geelong voice, which is just so important,” Ms Henderson said. She announced the panel meeting while touring Deakin University’s Geelong Centre for Emerging and Infectious Diseases this week with assistant employment minister Luke Hartsuyker.

State ‘tops up’ Leopold hub plans STATE Government has stepped in with an extra $500,000 for the first stage of a Leopold Community Hub. Member for Western Victoria David Koch announced the funding this week, lifting the Government’s total contribution to $2 million. Mr Koch said the money would allow completion of the $8.9 million project’s first stage, a “multifunction community meeting space”, by February 2015. He also announced $500,000 for redevelopment of Lara’s Austin Park. Mayor Darryn Lyons welcomed both funding injections. “Investing in Geelong is a wise investment. Tower’s health fears ‘rejected’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE REJECTION of objections to a mobile phone tower in Hamlyn Heights has set a precedent at Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). DEPUTY president Mark Dwyer said VCAT rejected objections based on public health concerns about electro-magnetic radiation. Mr Dwyer said raising the issue as part of a planning-based objection was a waste of time for the parties involved and VCAT. The “red dot” decision set a precedent for other similar cases. Mr Dwyer said public health concerns about electromagnetic radiation were often raised in planning cases about telecommunications facilities. “However, it is not the role of
VCAT to second-guess the expert authorities that regulate the area,” he ruled. “The amount of electromagnetic radiation emitted by a telecommunications facility may well be a legitimate issue of public concern. “However, VCAT is not a forum for addressing all issues of social or community concern, nor is it an investigative body. “It cannot give great weight to unsupported assertions about public health concerns in the context of an individual planning application, particularly in relation to matters outside its own expertise or beyond the limited ambit of its statutory role or discretion.” Mr Dwyer said Australian Communications and Media Authority set the regulatory standard under Commonwealth law, to

Roo clue to our Portugese link By NOEL MURPHY NEW EVIDENCE suggesting Eurpoean navigators discovered Australia in the 15th Century has added to conjecture over Geelong’s role in a secret Portuguese arrival. A New York exhibition of European mediaeval liturgy music features a sketch dating between 1580 and 1620 of what appears to be a kangaroo or wallaby. With Australia’s European discovery formally recognised as the arrival of Dutchman Wilhelm Janzsoon in 1606, the possible knowledge of kangaroos even earlier adds weight to claims the Portuguese arrived as early as the 1520s - and speculation they wintered in Geelong’s Corio Bay. The curators of the Sacred Song exhibition, Laura Light and Susan Bonython, said the sketch was in a personal book, called a processional thought, originally owned by a Caterina de Carvalho. “The manuscript includes pen-drawn initials of flowers and birds and animals, charming in their own right,” say curators of the “Sacred Song” the curators said. “Close inspection of these initials, however, reveals a surprise, for among the flora and fauna there is a carefully drawn image of a kangaroo, or perhaps a wallaby; one of the earliest European depictions of this animal. “This modest if delightful manuscript thus may contribute to a still-raging argument: Who discovered Australia - the Dutch or the Portuguese? “In 1606 the first Dutch ship was sighted off the coast of Australia. But a set of 16th Century world maps appears to argue in favour of the Portuguese, suggesting that they predated the Dutch in the discovery by at least a half century.
“If our manuscript can be dated with some certitude, this book with its drawing of a kangaroo, as well as small male figures that do not look European in their dress and headgear, interjects another sort of evidence into the long-standing argument, one that argues clearly in favour of the Portuguese.” Corio Bay has long been suggested as the 1522 wintering site of Portuguese explorer Cristovao de Mendonca. The late Geelong author Ken McIntyre raised the theory in his 1970s book, The Secret Discovery of Australia. Mr McIntyre contended that Mendonca led three ships, including Warrnambool’s mysterious Mahogany Ship, along the east coast of Australia on a secret mission into what was then Spanish territory. His theories had the support of evidence such as redrawn maps with an uncanny resemblance to the east coast and the discovery of strangely-shaped ancient keys deep in Geelong beach sand.

A GEELONG race crew has secured a place in a global yachting showdown after securing a financial backer, following a story in the Independent. Sydney to Hobart veteran Jake Newman, 30, told the Independent last week that he had a team ready to contest the World Melges Championship on Corio Bay but needed a backer to secure a racing yacht. Mr Newman said the story sparked the interest of local enthusiast Ian Murray who decided to support the effort with funding for the locals to charter one of the 24-foot racers and bring it down from Sydney. Mr Newman, a local builder, made a mad dash to Sydney to pick up the trailable yacht for the championship, which attracts the best Melges sailors in the world. “It was a super last-minute effort. He read about it in the newspaper and came on board,” Mr Newman said.

Letters Levy bottler of idea STAN MOORE (Letters, 17 January) claimed that a national Container Deposit Levy (CDL) sounded great in theory but would have unintended consequences. Apparently studies show that an estimated $300 would be added to Geelong’s residents’ annual shopping bills. Mr Moore has made the same claims in Tamworth and Orange newspapers. The experiences of the Northern Territory and South Australia, which already have deposit schemes, does not bear out these figures. If container deposit legislation doesn’t work in practice, we would expect to find this in the Northern Territory or South Australia. The territory scheme was introduced by a Labor government and subsequently defended by a Liberal government when Coca-Cola challenged the scheme in court. In South Australia, the CSIRO’s plastic debris mapping has found far less plastic emerging from the state’s coastline. Container deposit schemes have operated successfully in many countries. In Denmark in 2012, for example, 800 million empty bottles, or 89 per cent, were returned and reused. The deposit money from unreturned bottles is used to support the system. Mr Moore claimed that individuals do the right thing. Many of us do but there are still eight billion drink containers in Australia going to landfill or littered every year. A container deposit system, using reverse-vending machines to return money to consumers, would be cost-effective, convenient and sustainable way of dealing with these. Seeing red over a fine way to raise revenue WE SHARE the belief of Robert Derksen (Independent, 17 January) that VicRoads uses the intersection of The Boulevard and Melbourne Rd, Norlane, to raise revenue. We were horrified to receive a hefty fine and notification that we had entered the intersection nine seconds into the red light. We are both fiercely against people who run red lights and would never do anything like this, especially as nine seconds represents over 100 metres. We would have gone to Melbourne to view the traffic lights camera photograph and fought it in court but we were going overseas two days later. It would be interesting to know how many fines have been issued at this intersection. We will have to avoid Bunnings in the future because we are unwilling to take the risk of being fined again. My case was the same as Mr Derksen’s, with a truck going too slow on the right-hand turn. I protested to VicRoads, which sent a letter saying it would review my case. I then received another letter stating that my good driving record would not help because VicRoads consider my entry to the intersection facilities that we have put up with for years. Following public complaints several years ago management eventually removed the green slime from the walls of the shower recesses - but nothing more . We still have filthy floors, no seating, nowhere to hang your clothes. But for caravan park customers gold-standard facilities are the norm. As many people, both local residents and day visitors, remark, these public facilities must be the worst of any along the Australian coast. Just don’t expect our State Government representatives to take any action for a better deal for ratepayers and beachgoers not resident in the caravan park. The public have been informed by Bellarine Bayside at public meetings that it will “continue to give

be attracted to their rural properties are not facing reality. Farmers will naturally be concerned for the safety of their animals but the big black cats are also hunters and a sheep or calf is just as good to them as a wallaby or a few rabbits - and much easier to capture. People who have seen big cats shouldn’t be afraid of a bit of Aussie chiacking about it. Those who express serious ridicule will eventually find themselves proven wrong and the boot will be on the other foot. More witnesses speaking up must lead to acceptance these cats do exist. If I hear conversations debating this topic I say, “They are out there - I’ve seen them”. People will listen to observers’ accounts because many have never spoken directly to someone who has actually seen them. These sightings need to be publicised and knowledge of them pooled until officials are forced to take them seriously. Those with their heads in the sand are likely to emerge with red faces. Farming for coal, gas COAL and coal seam gas exploration licences cover large areas to the west of Geelong, along the coast as far as Anglesea and Port Campbell and across the Bellarine Peninsula. Farmers can be forced to permit companies to carry out exploration and, after obtaining the relevant licences, commence drilling, fracking or mining on their properties. Coal seam gas extraction with associated fracking can result in water pollution, reduced water availability and salinity. The extraction process involves the use and transport of heavy equipment and many trucks. The large vehicles servicing drilling rigs, travel country roads frequently and can cause serious damage to roads. Pipes traversing the paddocks can be a hazard. These are problems frequently reported by farmers in New South Wales and Queensland. Valuable farmland might eventually be lost, causing reduced food production. Farmers are becoming more concerned about the threat posed by coal seam gas and coal mining and are attending information meetings in country halls. Perhaps our politicians are taking notice. A GROUP of German classical musicians will visit Geelong and Queenscliff early next month as part of an international tour. Chamber Philharmonica Colonge will perform at St George’s Church, Queenscliff, on 2 February before playing Geelong’s St Mary’s Basilica two days later. Playing under the motto ‘Classical music the world over’, the chamber group said it had expanding its program and added venues for its latest tour. “The real appeal of our program lies in the meeting of popular and unknown works from a wide variety of musical epochs,” the group said. “This sees familiar greats like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Vivaldi in dialogue with works from people such as Sergei Prokofiev to the King of Tango, Astor Piazzolla. “This mix promises great diversity of the very highest order without us having to preach to the audience in the process. After all, music is for entertainment and not for instruction.” The philharmonic hails from Colonge, famous for a classical music heritage that has produced generations of musicians. The group said its “exceptionally talented musicians” played around 300 concerts a year around the world, with regular appearances in countries like Spain, England, Ireland and its native Germany as well as Australia and New Zealand. “The objective is simple: we want to inspire as many people as possible across all generations to enjoy classical music.” The chamber said tickets were available from Ticketmaster, Queenscliff’s visitor information centre and the two venues.
FORTY years had passed since Normie Rowe and the Playboys’ bass player Peter Carroll picked up his instrument when the band came knocking. “He said, ’Oh I’d love to but I haven’t got an instrument’,” Rowe recalled of Carroll in September. “So he went out and bought himself a reissued 1963 Fender Jazzmaster bass and an amplifier. He made a damn good fist of it.” Reforming the band had encouraged fans “out of the woodwork” to sell-out shows around the country, Rowe said. “Us old guys have got some energy left, I tell ya.” The band’s Saturday night show at Geelong RSL promises to feature a string of old favourite tracks, with Graeme ’Trotta’ Trottman, Steve Kelson, Billy Billing and Roger Montgomery joining Carroll and Rowe on stage. Rowe and the band was “pleasantly surprised” when the members went through their back catalogue remembering earlier successes. “We first started off thinking, ‘Oh God, how are we going to have enough stuff to put a show together?’ But we didn’t remember how many
hits we had.” Rowe, described as “Australia’s biggest pop star of the ’60s”, produced 11 top10 hits and five gold records with hits including Ooh La La, Que Sera Sera, Tell Him I’m Not Home and It’s Not Easy. Rowe hinted the new string of shows might serve as a warm-up for something bigger, including a new album, since 2015 would mark the 50th anniversary of his big break with It Ain’t Necessarily So. Reflecting on his long career in music, Rowe lamented the loss of regular entertainment variety programs such as The Don Lane Show and Countdown to kick-start young artists’ careers. “With the internet, a lot of people have panicked and thought about what’s going to happen with the industry. But the only thing that’s changed is the system of delivery,” he said. “We need the Federal Government to force TV networks to put shows with Australian contemporary performing arts on.” Also on the cards for Rowe this year would be a wedding to fiancée Penny Perrin, he said. “Her mother actually named her after one of my songs,” Rowe revealed.

Rozenbachs said the state’s comedy scene had become “huge over the last few years”. “People are more aware of it and there’s a lot more opportunities.” Many budding comedians performing in Raw Comedy hoped to kick-start a career, while others simply tried out as a personal challenge, Rozenbachs said. “It’s very daunting. A lot of people think, ’I can be funny, I make my mates laugh at the pub’, but all of a sudden there’s 200 people out there and you’re under pressure. It can destroy dreams pretty quickly but
ADAM Rozenbachs’ second stand-up comedy gig was “horrific” but he quickly learnt to bounce back. “My first gig went really well and I thought, ’This is easy’ but the second one brought be back down to Earth nice and quickly,” said the comedian, remembering back to 1999. “I did almost the same material as the first one but I just didn’t get any reaction at all.” Now established on the Melbourne comedy scene, Rozenbachs will MC the Geelong heat of national open mic competition, Raw Comedy. Backed by Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the event has helped launch the careers of Chris Lilley, Josh Thomas, Hannah Gadsby, Peter Helliar,
if you’re committed it can be a lot of fun.” Thinking back to his own rocky start, Rozenbachs recommended that budding performers record on their phones their first few shows to analyse and improve delivery style. “Sometimes you’ve got all this nervous energy when you’re doing material for the first time and it can be hard to recapture that. You can get so caught up in thinking about what’s coming next that you actually don’t hear reactions all that well.” There was “no real formula” to standup comedy but raw participants should have plenty of jokes up their sleeves, Rozenbachs recommended. AUTHENTIC Italian recipes are behind the delicious thin-crust pizzas and mouth-watering pastas at Grovedale’s The Pizza Factorie. Customers ordering pizza deliveries to the 3216 area, including Armstrong Creek, have already started getting to know friendly and prompt delivery man Dirk, just one of many passionate family-members involved in the new business. Owners Gerry, Katrina and Chris opened the shop in August after working with Gerry’s brother Frank at The Mobile Pizzeria. “We all worked together for about four years prior to this then we thought we’d go and open a shop ourselves,” Gerry explains. As Geelong born and bred locals, The Pizza Factorie’s crew are proud to sponsor South Barwon Cricket Club and Grovedale Football Club. The secret to The Pizza Factorie’s incredible pizzas is in the dough - Nonna’s recipe brought over from Italy, made fresh daily, Gerry explains. When it comes to toppings, The Pizza Factorie only uses fresh ingredients, Katrina adds. “We buy all our vegetables and slice them here.” Customers can choose from 26 varieties of pizza, including gluten free base options, and six pastas.

ORGANISERS are inviting the community to celebrate Australia Day at Rippleside Park with over 30 free activities for families and children to enjoy. The celebrations will include on-stage entertainment all day along with roving entertainers throughout the day. The event starts 11am and concludes 4pm, with a traditional flag-raising and opening address ceremony at 1pm. Some of the many free activities will include, amusement rides for children, face-painting, giant slide rides, jumping castles, ani-
mal nursery, pony rides and much more. Community displays will include sheep shearing, police vehicles, Girl Guide and Scouts, CFA fire engines, Geelong Military Reenactment Group and MG Car Club vehicles. Geelong Australia Day committee president Ron McVilly says the group is trying to provide as many free activities as possible, especially targeting families with children aged two to 12. “Therefore activities are based around this age group, Mr McVilly says. “We also encourage families
to bring a picnic lunch or there will be food vendors on-site at reasonable rates. “To make the day more friendly and easy for families, there will be adequate free parking provided on the site.” The committee has presented the Australia Day celebrations for over 50 years, with activities managed on the day by the Lions Club of Corio Bay, with the support of numerous other community groups, volunteers and local businesses. GEELONG Society of Operatic and Dramatic Art (GSODA) is the city’s oldest community theatre company, with many past members now professional performers, such as Peter Coleman Wright and Guy Pearce. Members of GSODA’s Junior Players have been performing twice annually for the past 48 years in productions such shows as The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Cinderella, Once Upon A Mattress and this year’s Beauty and the Beast. To perform as a Junior Player boys and girls must first audition for a three-term workshop. After the workshop auditions are held again to fill vacancies. The company begins each year with a minimum of 65 members aged 11 to 17 years. To be eligible to audition for the next workshop children must be aged between 10 and 14 from 1 January 2014.

Fiesta ST’s a hot hatch By EWAN KENNEDY IT’S a great little hot-hatch at a surprising low price. Built in Germany, the Ford Fiesta ST was developed by Ford Team RS, the European arm of Ford’s Global Performance Vehicle group. Based on the standard Fiesta, but with significant upgrades to powertrain, suspension, steering and brakes, the Fiesta ST is priced at just $25,990 plus on-road costs. That’s a lot of car for a very reasonable price. Ford Fiesta ST is a three-door in a market segment which tends to lean to the convenience of five doors these days. It’s good to see Ford stick with the sportier look of a three-door, it adds to the nature of this little beastie. The ST has a large trapezoidal honeycomb grille, deep front bumper, projector headlights with LED daytime running lamps, foglamps, a sports lower body kit, rear roof spoiler and a rear diffuser with twin chromed exhausts. IndySport Blues to test young Cat talent GEELONG Cricket Club has leapt to fourth on the Victorian Premier ladder after a thumping outright win over Greenvale Kangaroos. Declaring on their overnight score of 5/239 with a first innings lead of 119, the Cats bowlers picked up where they left of the previous week to again demolish their hosts. In an eerily similiar scorecard, Greenvale could only manage nine more runs than its first attempt to this time be all out for just 129 from only 48.2 overs. Jake Reed (4/33) was again the pick of the bowlers, taking his match tally to 10 wickets. Justin McPhee (3/26) and Luke Muller (2/56) leant valuable support. With a victory target of just 11 runs, Geelong finished the game in nine deliveries to assert its dominance on the match.

This Saturday the Cats begin a twoday match at home against fifth placed Carlton in a game that will tell the young Geelong side exactly where it fits in the scheme of things. Geelong West showed it is still a force to be reckoned with in Geelong Cricket Association’s top division with a stunning display to defeat ladder leader North Geelong on day one of their twoday clash at Osborne Park. The Magpies have been enjoying plenty of media attention in recent weeks
but the Rams put them back in their place. Led by speedster Josh Vrboski (4/36), who returned to form, and with good support from Tim Wight (2/5), North Geelong was bundled out for just 80. Veteran Brad Scown (2/14) did his bit after making 10 not out, taking some early wickets to have West reeling at 3/19. But Damien Vassilou (29) and Matt Slater (30) steadied the ship to take first innings points and finish day one on 7/133. West will most likely look to bat on tomorrow to ensure a backdoor outright is taken out of the equation. In division two, the critical match between fifth placed Marshall and sixth placed Torquay is evenly poised after the Bears notched up 9/229 last week. Englishman Jacob Waterson (45), who has finally arrived in Autralia after
some visa issues, batted well at the top of the order. But at 6/130 the game was in the balance, with Tom Dunn (4/93) claiming wickets. Then the Marshal lower order stood up, with Troy Jones (40), Levi Cameron (31) and skipper Brad Greenwood (30) all making important contributions late in the day. Early wickets will be the key tomorrow and, if Matt Bogan can produce something close to his best, Marshall should be able to defend its total. Inverleigh made a mess of things last week in its last-chance match against North Shore, scoring only 152 from just 45 overs after at one stage falling to the shocking score of 6/37. Conner Dillon (51) and Dylan Watt (42) combined for a 60-run stand but the
Seagulls stuck to their task, Chris Stringer (four wickets) the main destroyer. In reply, North Shore faced 16 overs and moved to 0/17 at stumps with a real chance of a morale-boosting victory if it can get the job done tomorrow. Either way, Inverleigh appears to have done its dash as far as finals are concerned because an outright result in this game looked like being the side’s only chance of sneaking into the finals. The finals of the Twenty20 format will be played at Osborne Park, North Geelong, on Monday. In the division three final, Shelford will take on Bell Park, St Peter’s will play Bell Post Hill in division two and in the main game up-and-comer Murgheboluc will take on reigning title holder East Belmont in a cracking game to cap of an exciting day of cricket.

COOLER conditions lured more anglers onto the water over the past week, with a consequent increase in reports of captures. Surf anglers caught big numbers of salmon from the rock platforms between Eastern View and Wye River. Lure accounted for the majority of fish, with most under one kilogram and taken two hours either side of high tied. Snapper were also taken from the rocks late in the evenings, with Black Rock productive but the area between Lorne and Mount Defiance even better. Geoff Reid trolled The Rip to catch reasonable numbers of salmon around 1kg. Larger fish were taken on lures fished deep. Swan Bay’s entrance produced whiting, flathead, gummy shark and garfish, with berley the key to success. Troy Marchant fished in front of Duck Island for a bag limit of quality squid in under an hour before catching flathead to 1.5kg on soft plastics. Whiting reports were inconsistent, with most anglers finding fish difficult to locate and the average size down around 33m. Lonsdale Bight was the best location, especially late in the evening or just after dark. Paul Fisher and Damian Moore drifted in 15m off St Leonards for flathead to better than 50cm along with legal-size snapper, all caught on soft plastics. Stephen Goodfellow was one of the few to catch a big snapper, with his fish a beauty of 10kg. Neil Palmer landed two others also on Monday morning near Wilson Spit, both just over 5kg. The area between Bird Rock and Point Wilson continued to produce some of the best fishing, with whiting, flathead, garfish and
pinky snapper taken early morning or late in the evening. Soft plastics angler Corey Sharp fished the outer-harbour spoil grounds for any number of flathead and snapper to 62cm. Stuart Reid fished from his canoe between Alcoa Pier and Point Henry’s sandbar with pippie baits for an impressive tally of whiting and an exceptional number of small-butlegal-size snapper. Stuart said the last two hours of daylight was best. Sam Pither fished Geelong’s waterfront from his kayak with bait and lure for a mixed bag of fish that featured an 80cm pike. The Barwon River in Geelong was again productive, with many carp caught on baits of bread or corn fished with berley. Redfin were caught on hard-body and soft plastics lures between the Shannon Ave bridge and Ceres. Lake Purrumbete was the best local freshwater destination. Anglers using downriggers set at 10m to 15m caught trout, while mudeyes suspended under floats worked well close in to the weed beds. Further afield, Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree began producing trout and redfin again after the hot weather on lure or bait. Fly anglers fishing after dark also caught fish on floating mudeye patterns. Lake Toolondo produced the best trout fishing, with lure and bait taking brown trout to over 2kg and rainbows to 1kg. Anglers should check fire danger warnings before heading upstate to the lake and other waterways in the area. Lake Burrumbeet, just outside Ballarat, will host a carp-fishing competition on 1-2 February. The entry cost of a gold coin will go to local charities.
