â– Mayor says quiet achievers are a shining example...

Our top Aussies “WE REALLY live in a wonderful country. This was Twanny Farrugia’s reaction to receiving the Greater Dandenong Citizen of the Year award at the Australia Day Festival in the Park on Sunday. “I haven’t been this excited since I graduated, and that’s many, many moons ago! he said. The Young Achiever of the Year award went to Guillaume Nyakaboyi. Doveton’s Sky Thomas was the Non-Resident of the Year and Annmarie Lochery and Nhar Ieng were joint winners of the Good Neighbour of the Year title. Greater Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti said they were hard-working and the city’s quiet achievers. “You are truly inspiring and are a shining example of the values and spirit our community strives to encompass, he said. Mr Farrugia moved to Australia from Malta when he was 11, and received the 18th kidney transplant performed at St Vincent’s Hospital. “This country has given me life in more ways than one, he said. “It gives you the resources to be anything you want to be if you’re not scared of a day’s work. The 60-year-old Springvale man has since been instrumental in raising awareness about organ and tissue donation. “Through education we can remove that element of fear and those myths, he said. “Thirty years ago when my father died his wishes were to be an organ donor. “I feel I’m in a unique position, having been on both sides of the fence. Mr Farrugia, who is visionimpaired, advocates for positive

change to support people with disabilities and new migrants and refugees. Mr Nyakaboyi, 21, was highly commended for the Young Achiever award last year. “I was ecstatic and honoured to win it this year, he said. The Noble Park man has volunteered with young leader, ambassador and advisory programs since arriving in Australia to ensure young voices are heard. He was selected for the State Government’s Involve Youth Committee where he represented the south east region and reported to the Youth Affairs Minister. “I believe that everyone has something to give to the community, he said. “I was told that it’s always good to use your talent to help humanity in any possible way. He is part of the Noble Parkbased Young African Connection and his goal for the year is to start tutoring sessions for young Africans. Ms Thomas, 19, plays an active role in Indigenous groups and youth programs and is an ambassador for Greater Dandenong’s Get Up Speak Out anti-racism campaign. “I was really surprised when they told me about the award, she said. “Then they showed a list of all the stuff I did - you don’t really think about it as you’re doing it. She’s studying fashion at RMIT and will run a sewing program with the council’s Youth Services team at the end of February. Ms Lochery was born at Dandenong Hospital and still calls the suburb home. “It’s a privilege to live in this great neighbourhood, she said. “Being nominated for the award was amazing. Driving bans ignored

Reining in councillors By CASEY NEILL

Mrs Powell said councillors must lead by example, acting with respect and integrity to encourage public confidence in the office of councillor. But Cr Maria Sampey said: “People in glass houses should not throw stones. “Mrs Powell likes to adopt the attitude of ‘do as I say and not as I do’,” Cr Sampey said. “What about the unruly behaviour of members of Parliament - will the same rule apply to them?” Cr Peter Brown said it was too bad that the State Government didn’t take some of its own medicine, and some MP behaviour “makes any misbehaving councillor pale in comparison”. “This seems an exercise in point-scoring by the State Government to divert attention from their own inadequacies,” Cr Brown said. “All mayors have the power to ad-

PEOPLE who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. This was the reaction from some Greater Dandenong councillors to the State Government’s “tough new powers” for mayors to remove misbehaving councillors from meetings. “The new legislation will be instrumental in raising the standard of councillor behaviour,” Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell said. “In the past, some councillors have thought they can get away with unruly, disrespectful and inappropriate behaviour during council meetings - this must stop.” Under legislation to be introduced to Parliament later this year, a mayor will have the power to suspend a councillor from a meeting if they continue to misbehave following two warnings.

journ a meeting and there are penalties already under the Local Government Act to punish misbehaving councillors.” Three-time mayor Cr Roz Blades said she didn’t have any problems during her time in the chair. “The only problem I see with this are the comments ‘unruly and disrespectful and inappropriate behaviour’,” she said. “What one mayor thinks is disrespectful and inappropriate behaviour, another mayor may not. “It is all open to interpretation.” Cr Blades said local issues could be very emotional and councillors needed the ability to respectfully debate. “At Greater Dandenong, we have a councillor code of conduct, which in my view should be the standard,” she said. Former mayor Cr Angela Long welcomed the new powers.

“I think it’s a good idea as long as it’s not misused,” she said. “It might make some of the councillors think twice about misbehaving.” She said there was some worry the power could be used in a vindictive way. “But we have to stop the misbehaving and the inappropriate behaviour,” she said. “I don’t think it will stifle free speech, because if you behave yourself you’ll get a good chance at it.” Mayor Jim Memeti said the council had not yet had time to consider the changes as a group. “However, I do support any initiatives that aim to improve transparency, accountability and good governance,” he said. HUNDREDS of Greater Dandenong drivers are flouting driving bans, according to highway patrol figures. On 14 January, two highway patrol members worked alongside a booze bus crew in Jacksons Road, Noble Park North. They checked registration numbers from 158 of the 650 vehicles that went through the bus and detected four suspended drivers, including one repeat offender whose car they impounded at the scene. Sergeant Jeff Stockdale told the Journal that the Greater Dandenong unit’s officers last year took 257 people to court for driving with a suspended licence, and 77 for driving while disqualified. “It’s a staggering number, really,” he said. And these figures are just from the 12 or so Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol members. Sgt Stockdale said uniform officers, State Highway Patrol and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) operations would have nabbed many more. “It’s really disappointing to see people driving around without a licence to do so,” he said. He said “I didn’t know” was the most common excuse from drivers caught behind the wheel while disqualified or suspended. The highway patrol also took more than 100 unlicensed drivers to court during 2013, with more motorists issued with on-the-spot infringement notices for the offence, Sgt Stockdale said. - CASEY NEILL

Siren’s song lures victim A WOMAN’S calls for help lured a Dandenong man into an armed robbery last week. The 25-year-old man was walking along Robinson Street, Dandenong, about 12.30am on 20 January when he heard the cries for assistance. But when he found the wom-

an on a vacant block on Mason Street, a man struck him on the head with a bottle, used the broken bottle to threaten him and demanded his backpack. The victim handed over his personal items. Greater Dandenong CIU Acting Detective Sergeant Luke

Kirton said incidents like this were “pretty rare”. “It’s clearly an orchestrated scenario,” he said. “We’re very interested in trying to solve that one.” Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

We are general dentists, and we provide things such as

Multi-storey eyesore challenged IT was pleasing to hear that the residents of Dandenong voiced their disapproval with the council over its inability or unwillingness to restrict multi-storey units in the City of Greater Dandenong. You’d be hard-pressed to find a single council in Australia that has done more to encourage the destruction of its built history than the City of Greater Dandenong. The areas from Pultney Street through to Macpherson Street, north of the market and east of Stud Road, should never have been approved for multi-storey apartment blocks. Development does not have to be a dirty word and when done properly can have enormous benefits for the local area, although I fail to see how the current zoning does that. The Res 2 Zone was made far too big from the outset and should have been restricted to the core CBD, around the train station to encourage people to commute to work

via public transport and along main thoroughfares such as Cheltenham Road and the Princes Highway. This would have allowed the overall development to grow organically and slowly fill in. Unfortunately the council, along with the former State Government, approved development over a far broader area, which has impacted once graceful residential side streets that should have been left for families and low-level development. We’re now left with a city that is pockmarked with inappropriate five-storey apartment blocks overlooking single-storey dwellings, and the city is staring down the barrel of turning from a once proud city in to an inner-city slum. The social ramifications that followed the development of the flats in Potter and Hemming streets in the late ’70s and early ’80s seem to have been forgotten in a seemingly short-sighted grab for money, and these consequences would be far greater if we are allowed to continue down the current path. Maybe now the council will finally realise that the people they are elected to represent do not want this and it’s time they stopped making

SIRIUS College in Keysborough is proudly applauding two students with ATAR scores over 99 from its class of 2013. Faruk Ayvaz achieved a 99.15 score, and Zehra Yigit 99.10. Results from the school’s other campuses were its highest ever - 99.90 and 99.85 - and six students achieved full study scores of 50. SRI Samy was ever-humble when she contacted us about being named the Journal’s 2013 Person of the Year. “Thank you for recognising someone from the refugee movement,” she said. “Many of my friends in the refugee movement have said that such positives will keep us all going for as long as we need to during these tough times. Thank you once again for helping us help these people.”

18 January. First Lieutenant Terence Sanford said they went up with four strike teams which included 20 trucks - from Region 8. “We left at 4am Saturday morning and got back to Melbourne about 5pm Monday afternoon,” he said. “It was a busy three days, lots of hard work. But we definitely achieved what we were sent there for. We were able to contain the fire.” DANDENONG North resident Peter Jabbour was among 3000 Australians nominated for Australian of the Year. The Greater Dandenong Living Treasure was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) last Australia Day for service through multicultural and charitable organisations. He couldn’t speak highly enough of the home he adopted in 1976. “I’m in love with this country,” he said.

I AM so pleased that Springvale Botanical Cemetery has been recognised worldwide. We have been extremely happy with the service we received over our relative’s demise and extremely happy with the choices that we had for the final resting place. It is a far cry from a quote from Gill Hibbin’s book A History of the City of Springvale. ‘Struggle Town’ one railway guard would announce on the train’s arrival at Noble Park during the war. The locals preferred the lesser known saying ‘beyond the grave there is heaven, beyond the crematorium - Noble Park’. Cybil, via web.

“I’ll never leave Dandenong. Since I came, it’s become part of me.” THE Little India traders’ battle for compensation might be on its way to the High Court. As part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong project, in 2008 VicUrban acquired the Mason Street grocery store Samir Obeid leased. The Supreme Court initially ruled he was entitled to compensation, but in December the Court of Appeal overturned the ruling and ordered him to pay VicUrban’s legal costs. The Journal heard this week that Mr Obeid had sought leave to take his battle to the High Court and was awaiting the result. HEADSPACE staff had a terrifying encounter last week - with a pipe. They called a snake catcher to the Lonsdale Street centre after spotting a reptile-like shadow on a skylight, but the deadly threat turned out to be nothing more than piping.

POLICE are appealing for information after a suspicious fire gutted a home in Birdwood Avenue, Dandenong. CFA crews were called to the blaze about 11pm on 17 January and found the house “well and truly alight”, Greater Dandenong CIU Acting Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said. Investigators attended the scene with an arson chemist and deemed the fire suspicious. Act Sgt Kirton said the house was unoccupied but there was evidence that squatters had been using it. VANDALS broke into a Bangholme property and torched a trailer filled with hay last Tuesday. Police said the raiders ripped a gate off its hinges at a Harwood Road property about 3.10am on 21 January. They entered the paddock, found a six by four cage trailer containing hay bales and set it alight. The owner, a 53-year-old Frankston man, arrived at the scene a short time later to perform his regular farm duties, saw the fire and called triple zero. The CFA attended and extinguished the flames but the trailer and hay bales were destroyed. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

POLICE arrested a Langwarrin man last Wednesday after vision of him allegedly performing burnouts in Dandenong South appeared on television. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol officers are expected to charge the 24-year-old on summons with reckless conduct endangering serious injury and improper use of a motor vehicle. BYSTANDERS put their own safety aside to block traffic after a hit-run driver left a teenager unconscious in the middle of Springvale Road last week. Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occurred just before 11pm on Sunday 19 January and left the 19-year-old victim in The Alfred hospital with serious injuries. Greater Dandenong CIU Constable Nic Hayes said he was crossing Springvale Road with a green pedestrian light about 200 metres south of Springvale railway station. “As he’s got to the northbound traffic lane of the road, a vehicle has come through and collided with that man,” he said. “The driver would have to know that he has collided with a pedestrian. “The pedestrian has come up onto the bonnet of the vehicle on the driver’s side and then fallen by the wayside as the driver’s braked. “Then the driver continued on, having to drive around the victim. “He wouldn’t know if the victim would be alive or dead.” The victim lost consciousness, received grazes to his knees, elbows and hands and had to be hospitalised before returning home on Wednesday night. “At the intersection where he’s been hit, it’s 60 kilometres an hour,” Const Hayes said. “It could have been a lot worse.” The car was last seen travelling north on Springvale Road. Police haven’t determined the vehicle’s registration number but described it as a small, light-coloured, four-door sedan. “Possibly a Nissan, but at this stage we’re unsure of the exact make

TWO drivers tried to bolt from booze buses in Greater Dandenong in the space of a week. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Sergeant Jeff Stockdale said the first runaway was at an Operation Invincible breath test in Corrigan Road, Keysborough, on 12 January. A driver approaching the roadblock performed a U-turn and fled through back streets with police in pursuit. A Keysborough man, 26, dumped his car, leaving his keys inside and ran into Parkmore Shopping Centre. Sgt Stockdale said he’s expected to be charged on summons with driving while suspended, refusing a preliminary breath test, evading police and making a false report. The second incident was on South Gippsland Highway, Dandenong South, on 19 January. Acting Sergeant James Savin said a driver stopped short of the roadblock, pulled his car over behind trees and walked into bushes. An officer found the elderly man, who blew .123, received a penalty notice and lost his licence.

Soaring mercury and cooling off memories THE SOARING temperatures earlier this month brought back fond memories of “dog paddling” as a child in the dams on our property at Lyndhurst to keep cool under the watchful eye of my father, Rowland Hill Archer. Like my father, I inherited a love of water. Dad was fortunate to have miles of the River Tamar on his doorstep at the family property ‘Landfall’, near Launceston. Dad had a governess who supervised his swimming lessons from an early age. I can recall my father telling me how eels, which inhabited our dams, used to travel overland across the paddocks to other dams. My memory of them will always be that they were like slimy snakes. When I was a student at Dandenong High School, we had regular swimming lessons at the Dandenong Baths. Life savers were always present.

MY VOICE A MOMENT WITH

MARG STORK The heat also reminded me of the days when I wrote stories about wellknown Dandenong printer Claude Quist saving adults and children who found themselves in difficulties when swimming in the Dandenong Creek and of Max Curtain and his famous ‘wedge’ pool. In the 50th anniversary edition of the Dandenong and District Historical Society’s Gipps-Land Gate magazine, published last year, Carmen Powell wrote of the wedge pool, which Max built in his backyard to “keep the kids out of that bloody creek”.

Max’s contribution to the youth of Dandenong during the 1960s and 70s was outstanding and one that should be remembered and recognised by the community of not only Greater Dandenong but beyond. Sadly, Max passed away last year. The magazine also published a story by society member George Walker who spent his childhood in Dandenong and who had memories of the creek’s “skinny dip” pools. He said before Dandenong got its swimming pool on the highway next to the drill hall in 1926, the locals “cooled off” in summer in Dandenong Creek or headed for the beach at Edithvale. There were many swimming holes in the creek when it was dredged - the “quarry” east of the town near Kidds Road; the “wattles” just below the Pultney Street oval; the “reeds” in the cleared area beyond the Dandenong Park.

Browsing through a copy of the Journal dated 3 January 1940, a front page story caught my eye about a heat wave, in which people sweltered through three days of extreme temperatures similar to the exhausting temperatures that hit Melbourne recently. The bushfire reports this summer have been alarming. I can recall my father responding to calls for firefighters when a fire swept through the forests in the Dandenongs. The smoke affected his eyes and it was three weeks before his sight was restored again. During hot weather our animals were always looked after with adequate water supplies, and we were fortunate to have a number of underground wells and also above-ground galvanised tanks on stands. The long water troughs for the cattle, horses and sheep were checked daily.

Before the introduction of ice chests and the ice man delivering blocks of ice, my mother used to lower our coolgardie safe into one of the the underground tanks to cool. AUSTRALIA DAY Congratulations to the winners of this year’s City of Greater Dandenong Australia Day awards. I love reading about the achievements of so many worthy people in our great community. Their tireless work on behalf of others is a reminder to us all about the joy of giving back through community service. I could not be at the Australia Day festivities in Dandenong Park on Sunday but I hope everyone who did enjoyed what is always a very special community celebration. For coverage of the event turn to pages 8 and 9.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 27 January 1914 ‘Warillda’ to be sold The well known property ‘Warillda’ containing five rooms, bathroom, pantry, large stable, coach house and feed house with all conveniences, with three acres of land at the corner of Stud Road and Herbert Street tastefully laid out in lawns and flower and fruit gardens, is to be sold by public action on account of the owner having left the district, on Saturday 7 February at 3 o’clock on the property. Full particulars and orders to view can be obtained from the auctioneers Messrs Robins & Co, Dandenong.

50 years ago 27 January 1964 Dandenong West Street used as a speed track Sir – I think it is more than something was done to make the Hemmings Street and Potter Street intersection safer, such as a compulsory stop signs. Two weeks ago there were two accidents on two consecutive nights at this corner. Hemmings Street is now a speed track with cars doing 50 or 60mph straight over the Potter Street intersection as if it were not there. The street is getting noisier and more dangerous every day, particu-

larly for children. The drivers of two Customlines are the worst offenders. Saturday nights are a nightmare in Hemmings Street. 20 years ago 27 January 1994 Royal praise for city’s water sports centre The Dandenong Oasis received high praise last week from Prince Michael of Kent when he attended a civic reception as Commonwealth president of the Royal Life Saving Society. 5 years ago 27 January 2009 This is what multiculturalism is all about A day before celebrating all things Australian, the Chinese community was out in force to commemorate Lunar New Year in Springvale. A crowd of about 70,000 converged on Springvale shopping centre enjoying performances, a taste of Asian food and traditional firecrackers. There was plenty of colour at Springvale’s Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations, with the dragon dancers putting on a show for the thousands in attendance. It was followed by 15 days of celebration.

Life Saving Council championships, Prince Michael said at a reception hosted by mayor Daryl Allemand: “I had the opportunity to view some of the excellent facilities at the Oasis today. “The $8.2million invested by the city in this recreational centre has provided an outstanding facility. “I understand that 800,000 people visited the centre in its first year (1991), making it one of the five top recreational centres in Australia. I commend your city and its officers on these excellent facilities which are undoubtedly one of the finest in the Southern Hemisphere”.

Country like no other By BRIDGET SCOTT FEW could predict the torturous tale Sarah O’Shea has to tell. The mother of one has a management degree under her belt and was recently named runner-up for Chisholm Institute’s International Student of the Year award. But she fled war-torn Zimbabwe with her family just a few years ago - one of the world’s most poverty-stricken countries where political unrest rules. Ms O’Shea described the situation that overcame the southern African country as “like no other” - the government wanted to get rid of white people and would go to any length to do so. Her brother-in-law suffered a heart attack, which she and sister Mariead believe was triggered by the stressful climate. It was then they made the decision to move to Australia, where their two brothers already lived. “It’s totally safe here, it’s unbelievable,” Ms O’Shea said

“When we first came we locked windows, doors and would hear cars coming and we would think, ‘will our tyres be stolen when we wake up tomorrow morning?’” Ms O’Shea was unable to resume her occupation as a secondary school teacher, so started a management course at Chisholm Institute in Dandenong. The TAFE presented her its International Student of the Year runner-up award at Parliament House late last year. The experience made the difference between Australia and Zimbabwe even clearer, and the discrepancy shocked Ms O’Shea. “To think we went to an actual government set up and we weren’t even searched,” she said. “There was the Premier, and there was the Governor - that would never happen in our country.” Ms O’Shea still calls Zimbabwe home and said forging a life in a new nation was difficult. But tapping into one of her

Police on hoons’ trail By CASEY NEILL POLICE have dispersed more than 100 hoons, following them to meeting points in three suburbs over several hours. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Sergeant Jeff Stockdale said the “highly mobile” group started their night in Dandenong South about 10pm on Saturday 18 January. They moved on to Rowville after police arrived, then Overseas Drive in Noble Park North. “Our night shift was still chasing them around into the early hours of the morning,” Sgt Stockdale said. He said officers came across them while patrolling “the usual hotspots” and issued a number of vehicle defect and traffic infringement notices. Sgt Stockdale said they found evidence of burnout activity. “But they were just parked

there, with nothing actually happening,” he said. “Nothing’s going to happen while you’re sitting there.” Last November, Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts urged the public to “dob-in” hoons, to protect themselves and their loved ones. “We’re throwing resources at these fools that are creating the risk,” he said. “That takes them away from our normal duties and creates a risk to the broader population.” Sen Sgt Roberts said hoons were showing up on private property on Tuesday and Friday nights. “If they decide to show off, it can turn very bad, very quickly,” he said. “The risk these people pose is enormous. Eventually, something’s going to happen.”

Sarah O’Shea came to Australia from Zimbabwe three Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS years ago. 110617 greatest loves has helped. “In Zimbabwe I was a professional squash player,” she said. “Every Friday night I play squash, with 15 Australian men.” She said it was a release and her first real opportunity to interact with Australians. “I think it literally saved my life,” she said. “Without it, I think I would have gone mad.” The Nar Nar Goon resi-

dent is now on the hunt for a job and fears she might not find employment in time. She’s living in Australia on a student visa and could be forced to move to Ireland, where she holds a dual passport, if she can’t find work by the time it expires in March. “The day I get the good news, or that I am made a permanent resident, I will get a piece of grass or soil, and I will taste it and say, ‘to eat this and earn this, what a trip’,” she said.

AUSTRALIA DAY From Page 1 “It’s something I really take to heart because I try to be a good neighbour and show people how to be a good neighbour.” Ms Lochery worked with support service Wellsprings for more than 10 years, served on the board at The Open Door and has volunteered at St Vincent de Paul for 12 years - all while working full time. She’s now Vinnies’ Dandenong region president. “We visit people in homes, caravan parks, boarding houses, and provide them with emergency food relief,” she said. “The best part is hearing their stories. It also makes you feel part of the community.” She’s learnt to say ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ in 14 different languages. “It breaks down barriers, it’s amazing. “Looking after each other and supporting each other - I think that’s what Dandenong is all about.” Mr Ieng has supported the Khmer community since arriving in Australia in 1980 and worked to preserve the culture he left behind. “He’s very excited to have received the Australia Day award and he feels very satisfied after all these years that he has put in to help the Cambodian community,” his daughter Sokha Ieng said on his behalf. “He’s very, very speechless. “He just does it from the bottom of his heart.” The Springvale South man has been the key fundraiser for a Cambodian temple in Springvale. “He wants the temple so the new generation of Cambodian people can feel that the culture always exists,” Ms Ieng said.

No long faces here FESTIVITIES in Greater Dandenong on Sunday weren’t only about celebrating Australia Day. Springvale hosted Lunar New Year activities on 26 January to welcome the Year of the Horse. The event draws about 70,000 people to the town centre each year to enjoy

cultural performances, food, firecrackers and more. A flag raising ceremony and rendition of the national anthem brought an Aussie feel to the festivities, including lion and dragon dances, martial arts and rides. Visit dandenong.starcommunity.com. au for more photos from the event.

AUSTRALIA DAY It’s an honour to receive award

Cultures connect COMMUNITY connections were at the core of celebrations at Dandenong Park on 26 January. The Greater Dandenong Australia Day Festival in the Park featured live music, dance, performers, market stalls and more and brought together residents from a diverse range of cultures. The free festivities revolved

around the theme ‘a celebration of our community and the things we have in common’. Noble Park RSL celebrated the nation’s day by raising the Australian flag and playing the national anthem at noon on Sunday, with refreshments and live entertainment following.

GREATER Dandenong can lay claim to three Australia Day Honours List recipients. Associate Professor Bruce Waxman, Jack Ma and Christopher Lawton were among 487 people awarded Medals of the Order of Australia (OAM) on 26 January. “They elevate the concept of giving to others,” Governor-General Quentin Bryce said. “They heighten our respect for one another and they encourage Australians to think about the responsibilities of citizenship in our democracy.” Mr Waxman’s medal is for service to medicine as an administrator, educator and clinician. He’s been a surgeon with Monash Health since 1987, head of surgery at Dandenong Hospital since 1994, and founded South East Colorectal in Dandenong in 2005. The surgeon has also directed medical services at South Eastern Private Hospital in Noble Park and The Valley Private Hospital in Mulgrave since last year. Mr Ma received his medal for service to the Chinese community of

Victoria. He’s a member of the Springvale Chinese Senior Citizens Association, the Hakka Association of Victoria, based in Springvale, and other Chinese associations across the state. An OAM was awarded to Mr Lawton, from Narre Warren South, for his service to the Sri Lankan community. He was involved in establishing an aged care facility for the Sri Lankan community in Keysborough in 2009 and has been a member of the Springvale-based AustralianCeylon Fellowship since 1977. He’s served as the group’s president, vice president, honorary secretary and chairman of its migration sub-committee, and edited its newsletter. Mr Lawton is a Ceylon Ex Servicemen’s Association Australia life member and is a member of several other Ceylon and Sri Lankan groups based in the south-east and beyond. Anyone can nominate any Australian for an award in the Order of Australia. To nominate someone worthy, visit www.gg.gov. au.

Passion spreads CHILDCARE CHOICES like a wildfire Safe and secure By CASEY NEILL A NEW group with a passion for Dandenong has attracted 30 members within two days since its inception. The Dandenong Community Association (DCA) is open to residents who want a suburb that people want to live in and stay in. Silvia Mastrogiovanni and Carmel Puglisi formed the “voice for a liveable suburb” following an overwhelming turnout at the Red Gum Ward community meeting on 14 January. Last week, the Journal reported that 40-plus degree conditions didn’t deter 90 people from attending the event at Dandenong Library. “A lot of people in Dandenong are really passionate about this town,” Ms Mastrogiovanni said. “We really do want a place

where people want to stay living in. “We will be a voice for planning issues, facilities and services, public open space and other issues affecting Dandenong.” At the meeting, residents slammed council inaction on restricting multi-storey unit developments on what were single residential blocks, a lack of business start-ups, inadequate parking in central Dandenong and poor accessibility to shops, particularly on Lonsdale Street. Richard Kenny, a Dandenong resident and ratepayer of nearly 40 years, said the overall tone was one of “widespread community dissatisfaction with our council”. “There is a community feeling that Dandenong is to be treated as a lower class, lowrent suburb,” he said. “There seems to be an unwillingness to accept the future

social impacts of multi-storey, multi-unit developments.” DCA wants a Dandenong that is a community where people feel they belong, that is designed for families to live in and is keen for changes that benefit its residents and value its heritage. It wants Dandenong to have appropriate development, highquality community facilities and plentiful open space. “Within the first two days of the association being formed, 30 residents have joined,” Ms Mastrogiovanni said. “DCA is open to all Dandenong residents who share these goals.” To join the association, email your name, address and contact number to dca3175@yahoo. com.au or call 0449 518 351. DCA will keep residents updated on issues at www.facebook.com/dca3175.

Thief head-butts and flees A THIEF head-butted a man at a Dandenong ATM late last month and fled with cash and credit cards. Police last week released an image of a man they want to identify and speak to in relation to the attack, which occurred about 4pm on 28 December. The Dandenong victim, 55, was retrieving money from the teller machine outside 308 Thomas Street, when the man

standing behind him head-butted him and took his wallet. The victim chased the thief along Thomas Street until he fled in a silver Holden. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives are investigating and urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Police are seeking help to identify this man.

HISTORIC SITE HAS LOTS TO OFFER

“Each of the stunning blocks at Woolamai House will be positioned just moments from one of the island’s best swimming spots, offering crystal clear water, pristine beaches and a permanent place to play,” Adam Grollo said. Surfing at some of Australia’s best surf beaches, fishing or simply strolling along the sandy shores are just some of the pastimes to be enjoyed, while the secluded surrounds may have the new owners believe that it’s their very own private beach.

After holidaying here with his family for years, Mr Grollo believes, “future residents will be well serviced by the nearby destinations of Cowes and San Remo, where a vibrant array of shops, restaurants, cafés and more await your visit.” Family friendly activities like the Churchill Island Heritage Farm, the famed Penguin Parade and the Phillip Island Nature Park all add to the location’s appeal. Woolamai House is just a 90 minute drive from Melbourne’s CBD, the perfect

location for a holiday home or permanent residence. A handful of stunning home-sites still remain at this prestigious water-side development, ranging from 504sqm to 930sqm and starting from $249,000. The future residents are excited to see construction has now commenced and with lots selling fast, astute buyers need to act quickly on this limited opportunity. Woolamai House is open Saturdays from 1pm-4pm. Visit www.woolamaihouse.com.au for more information.

Woolamai House is nestled in a secluded pocket of paradise, just metres from the aquatic hues of Cape Woolamai. It offers absolute beachfront living wrapped within a quiet enclave. Woolamai House showcases an exclusive location and lifestyle to match. It overlooks a sheltered bay and sparkling swimming beach and is set within the grounds of one of Phillip Island’s first homesteads. The original property was established in 1876 by the famed horse trainer Captain John Cleeland who trained his horse ‘Wollomai’ to a Melbourne Cup victory. More than 130 years later the Grollo Family is proud to offer Phillip Island’s best address to a select few. Great care has been taken in the development of this historic site. The homestead, which remains on 1.6 hectares, has been carefully restored and is a charming centre-piece to this truly unique development.

Specialising in all levels of dance instruction from toddlers to professionals, the studio has an outstanding reputation for high quality teaching in a friendly environment. For 18 years, principal Tammy Johnston has set the standard, helping dancers develop and enjoy their art. T.J.’s offers opportunities for those who are looking towards careers in dance, musical theatre or teaching. Once a week students are also encouraged to enjoy the art of dance for self-confidence and fitness. “We are a family studio which is fully equipped for safety,” Tammy said. “Class sizes are limited for correct tuition and more individual attention. “Jazz and tap classes can be combined for greater value of money and to allow students to take more classes.” Tammy is fully qualified in all genres of dance and has been a part of the industry for more than two decades. With guest teachers at the studio throughout the year, students can be assured they will receive all the training needed to reach their goals in dance. Special deals are also available for students who take over four classes a week. ON the face of it, a UFOthemed playground seems fertile ground for children’s rampant imaginations. But it is also vindication for more than 100 people - many who were children when they purportedly saw flying silver objects hover and vanish in broad daylight in what became known as the ‘Westall 1966 incident’. The playground, which opened at The Grange Reserve in Clayton South last month, pays homage to what is described as Australia’s most significant UFO sightings. Among the tanbarked landscaping, barbecues, play equipment and storyboards of the event is a largescale flying saucer. A dozen or so eyewitnesses attended the opening, each pledging they saw something extraordinary linger and then disappear behind pine trees on 6 April 1966. At the time, they were told by teachers, the headmaster and “men from the government in uniform and plain-clothes” 47-years-ago, never to talk about it. Even at the opening, a UFOsceptic was willing to pick apart their anecdotes. The sceptic was told firmly by Joy Clarke, a former Westall High School student and eyewitness: “You weren’t there!” Ms Clarke like all staff and students was forbidden from talking to the press. So reported the Journal at the time, under headlines “Flying Saucer Mystery: School Silent”. Ms Clarke was led away by a police officer as she tried to answer questions from a TV news crew on the day of the event. Many of the eyewitnesses were teachers and school children at Westall Primary School and Westall High School, practising PE outside at the time. Some of them chased the objects into the reserve, which was then a mass of orchards and market gardens, pines, gums, heath and blackberries. “The principal that afternoon told us to keep it quiet,” Ms Clarke said.

From left; each pledging they saw something extraordinary in 1966 - Shane Ryan, Norman Bury, Kevin Hurley, Paul Smith, Maurice Potter, Ivan Potter, Suzanne Savage and Joy Clarke. 111571 “We were told it wasn’t anything… it was a weather balloon. “But it wasn’t a weather balloon. I saw three flying saucers - we compared it with the comic books and the science movies. My personal belief is they were extra… they were from somewhere else.” “They were hovering over the school and we saw them hovering over the trees here (at the reserve). “Then they came down again. “I never saw anything move so quickly, at huge speed up, down and side to side. When Cessnas came and chased them, they just played cat and mouse with them.” She regards it as a privilege to have seen the objects. Canberra-based researcher Shane Ryan has been instrumental in collaborating the sightings. This playground means those eye-witnesses’ memories are “finally given the recognition they deserve”, he says. He collected 145 testimonies, many long locked away inside people’s memories and hidden out of fear of ridicule, disbelief, reputation damage or out of fear itself. Their stories are not for anyone to “prohibit, deny or take away”, Mr Ryan told gatherers at the launch. He later told the Journal many of the eyewitnesses expressed “palpable relief” that he was willing to listen. Some of the witnesses wore

T-shirts ‘Westall 1966: The Truth is Here’; some were interviewed by a roving crew from UFO TV. Andrew Arnold, of UFO TV, ranks the incident as among the top-10 UFO sightings in the world, because it was collaborated by so many and in broad daylight. Paul Smith remembers the incident vividly. He was working in the market garden as a 16-year-old when he saw an elongated 10-metre object hover in the air metres away. “It started to change from solid to light and a rainbow. It was shimmering and changing form,” he told the Journal as he pointed at the playground’s ether. “It disappeared in a torch of light through the trees. The trees didn’t move. “It wasn’t threatening. I was more afraid when the army came and interviewed my boss.” Mr Smith spoke of the suppression at the time. After talking with authorities, his boss wouldn’t tell him what was going on. “He saw it but wouldn’t have anything to do with it. He didn’t seem interested.” His cousin was dis-enrolled from Westall High School because; “there was too much talk of flying saucers”. “To me, it was something that happened. If something can change from a solid object to light rays, I believe anything can happen,” Mr Smith said. “Nothing can shock me.”

Retail status on the table RETAILERS can get the good word on Dandenong’s progress and future directly from the top next month. The Dandenong Retail Traders’ Association (DRTA) will hold its first information session for the year on Tuesday 4 February. Representatives from all customer-based businesses - including retail, service and professional - are invited to attend. Guest speaker John Ben-

nie, City of Greater Dandenong CEO, will tell attendees about progress within the city, work underway and future plans, and take questions. “This is the opportunity for this association and our guests on the night to pass on information to business, and in return to receive relevant information from the business community,” DRTA chairwoman Glenys Cooper said. She said the group’s regular information sessions were excel-

lent networking opportunities. The DRTA’s mission is to provide information, networking and access to federal, state and local authorities to promote business in central Dandenong. The Information Session will be held at the Ramada Encore Hotel, 50 McCrae Street, Dandenong, from 6pm until about 7.30pm.Call Glenys Cooper on 0417 394 722 or 9794 9397 for more information.

Seriously blitzing his personal best By JARROD POTTER DANDENONG’S rising star swimmer Nick Galileos added a pair of state championships to his trophy cabinet last month. The 14-year-old all-rounder won the 400m freestyle in a massive personal best time and was part of Casey TigerSharks Swimming Club’s boys’ 4x50-metre medley relay at the Victorian Age Swimming Championships, held in December at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Shedding 10 seconds off his prior best in the morning heats of the 400m freestyle, Galileos backed it up by taking six seconds off that mark in the night session to emphatically earn the championship. “400m freestyle came first, I dropped 10 seconds in the morning heats and a further six at night so I dropped 16 seconds throughout the day... I was pretty happy with that one,” Galileos said. “The medley relay was one of the last events

on the second last night and we were all pretty beggared throughout the week but we managed to get the win. “Shaun was really dominant in his breaststroke leg, Matt had a great swim in the butterfly and Jake Crozier had a smashing PB in the freestyle so it was really exciting.” Taking the lead-off backstroke leg for the relay, Galileos and team mates Shaun Banzon, Matthew Faoro and Jacob Crozier touched in at 1.57.70 to claim the championship. “Jacob Crozier anchored the swim and we managed to medal,” TigerSharks’ coach Ben Hiddlestone said of Galileos and the relay team’s performance. “With Shaun included they were unbelievable - two seconds better than the next team.” A pair of silver medals in the 200m and 400m individual medley capped off a stellar meet for Galileos.

Having faith in Forsyth Long white cloudy future? By JARROD POTTER WITH the freedom to go for his century last week, Dandenong middle-order batsman Cameron Forsyth paid back a lot of faith. Forsyth, 21, from Aspendale Gardens, had played most of last season in the Panthers’ thirds’ team but received his promotion at the start of the season and has cashed a few important knocks already. “It’s been a pretty big transition for me,” Forsyth said. “I was in the threes most of last year… was a shock selection when I started in the ones this year.” Paying back the selectors’ ambitious move to promote him to the first grade, Forsyth has made a pair of 40s and an impressive 70 against Essendon last year but the best from his bat came last weekend at Monash University’s cricket oval. While the pressure was off last Saturday when Andrew Gale (100) and Forsyth (104 not out) erased a slender Hawthorn-Monash University lead. “We didn’t really have any plans to get on it with - hit the bad ball and get in,” Forsyth said. “Once we got near the target and passed it, it all became easier.” Gale fell after reaching his century, leaving the target-setting duties to Forsyth and Jack Worrall and the pair ran hard to ensure the score would rapidly increase. “Played with Jack for the last two or three years - played with him in the twos and had a really good partnership for the start of the year in the ones,” Forsyth said. “We were 5/70 and we batted and got us over the line - in that innings we wanted to run the twos and threes really hard and we did that on the weekend as well.” “As soon as I got to 90 I knew they’d try to get me there - it went from 80-90 really quickly. “Once I got to 90 I was a massive chance.” With a back-cut racing to the boundary, 96 turned into 100 and for Forsyth it was a moment he couldn’t particularly comprehend. “I never really thought I’d get there but it was pretty happy and hard to take it all in, and a bit surreal. “It’s a good start to the year for Forsyth and he admits it hasn’t been a part of his usual cricket season openers thus far. “It makes the season a lot easier to get off to a decent start - usually I have a pretty poor start,

but did OK in the one dayers and thought I could play in the one dayers and felt a little bit more comfortable,” Forsyth said. Forsyth wanted to thank another Premier Cricket century-making machine, his older brother Brett for helping him transition to first grade cricket. “(Thanks) to my brother Brett for giving me a bit of extra help at training and progress a lot faster than everyone would’ve thought.” Forysth said.

Michelle Lombardo will trade in the Dandenong Warriors’ hockey kit for a New Zealand kit as she represents her birth country at the Masters World Cup in June. 113584 Picture: JARROD POTTER

By JARROD POTTER

A subtle thumbs up to his team mates was celebration enough for Dandenong’s Cameron Forsyth after his debut Premier Cricket century last round. 113137 Picture: JARROD POTTER

MOST people would go to ground when the national side overlooks them. Greater Dandenong Warriors’ Hockey Club secretary Michelle Lombardo, from Narre Warren, shrugged off Australia not selecting her for the upcoming Masters Hockey World Cup by going elsewhere. Lombardo is the beneficiary of a unique heritage which has allowed her to shrug off missing the Australian Over-40 Women’s Masters hockey team by... signing up to play for her home country New Zealand. Lombardo emigrated from Hawkes Bay, New Zealand six-years-ago and has represented Victoria since she picked up the hockey stick again. “We’re in the World Cup this year selected to play in Amsterdam and we’re pooled in the group with Australia and against the Netherlands so there are some very tough teams in there,” Lombardo said. “I didn’t even realise I could go across the waters… had to get a release here. “Last year I was selected for the Women’s Masters Victorian side and we had our tournament in Adelaide and won all our games. “Went into the final unbeaten and unfortu-

nately we let the ball drop and came runnersup - had to do a shootout and they were one-up on us. “Through that we had Australian trials, I put my name down and whilst I got some good feedback, they told me to develop and work on a couple of things and they might select me for future tournaments.” Out of a selection trial of 300 women, Lombardo emerged as one of the Silver Ferns’ best to head over to Amsterdam later this year for the Masters World Cup. “But because the World Cup is in Amsterdam this year, I didn’t want to wait another four years, so I made inquiries with New Zealand… they were trialling their team two weeks after I came back from Adelaide. “So they asked if I could get a release from Australian hockey, I went over trialled and got selected and I was very impressed.” Despite her selection for New Zealand, Lombardo wants to keep pursuing an eventual spot in the Australian team. In the meantime though, she would love to help guide New Zealand to victory over Australia at the World Cup. The Masters World Cup is in Amsterdam from 5-13 June.

A win is a win By JARROD POTTER

IT WAS scrappy… but Dandenong will take it. This wasn’t stylish basketball by any stretch, but slogging it out in the trenches proved enough for Dandenong to clinch a 90-84 win over Adelaide on Friday night. Defensively it was a pack-brawl at times as Adelaide clogged the key with its tall timber - Lauren Hodges (28 points), Azania Stewart and Chalysa Shegog - leaving Dandenong to scrap it out for precious rebounds. A battle between Australian Opals Olympic team mates Jenna O’Hea and Jenny Screen proved fascinating as neither gave an inch up-and-down the court. Dandenong broke the game open in the fourth quarter on the back of an Alice Kunek three-pointer, followed by an exceptional assist to Kayla Pedersen in the key to push Dandenong out to 83-78 with 3.30 remaining. A pair of technical fouls on Adelaide took the match from their grasp and with it, their final’s aspirations. O’Hea (19 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists), Natalie Novosel (14 points) impressed at both ends with some blistering runs to the basket while Pedersen (10 points, 7 rebounds) and Brigitte Ardossi (12 points) deserve credit for taking on a gamut of Lightning talls. The starring Ranger however was Alice Kunek - who slugged it out defen-

sively before making her shots stick at the other end. Shooting 10-12 from the field and 3/3 three-pointers, Kunek’s 27 points proved the difference. The fightback was important for Dandenong coach Mark Wright, with his side making amends for the 64-84 loss suffered at the hands of Adelaide earlier this year. “They’re really important factors go-

ing forward that we know we can come from behind,” Wright said. “That’s how they jumped us in Adelaide - completely different today and we fought it out and that’s a proven ingredient for the success we’re aiming to get.” Dandenong travels to Perth on Friday to face the West Coast Waves before Sunday’s clash against Canberra in Alison Downie’s 300th WNBL match.

Above - Natalie Novosel takes to the air in Dandenong’s six-point Pictures: JARROD POTTER win over Adelaide. 113583 Left - A fateful Jen-counter with Jenna O’Hea and Jenny Screen battling up-and-down the court. 113583

ONLY one match to go before Dandenong’s Alison Downie joins one of the most elite lists in Australian basketball history. Downie, 29, is set to notch her 300th Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) match this weekend in a career stretching back to her debut in the 2000/01 season. Most impressively, in an era of crossing the country to pursue a basketball career or a better role in a team, Downie has remained a Ranger throughout and is the current gamesrecord holder for the club. “I’ve had it planned from the start of the season,” Downie said. “We had the countdown, Dad has the countdown in his phone and rings me every so often and says ‘270… 280’ and so on.”

Downie, who was helped from the court following a mid-air collision after a rebound against Adelaide’s Angela Marino, shook off the knock but sat out the rest of the match and had the thought linger in her head whether she’d be able to play this upcoming weekend. “I’m trying not to think about it (300th match),” Downie said. “I thought about it tonight (Friday) when I went down. “I thought… ‘am I going to be able to play next week?’… but I’m trying to think game by game and just to get there is the main priority.” The Rangers will face West Coast on Friday night in Perth for Downie’s 299th match before flying back to face Canberra for the milestone match. Tip off on Sunday is 1pm at Dandenong Basketball Stadium.

WHAT’S ON this week

By JARROD POTTER DANDENONG had a painful day at the office - bowling without much luck as Melbourne Uni (8/314) rampaged all over Shepley Oval. Daniel Hutton (123) proved himself a thorn in the Panthers’ paw as he posted runs up-and-down the order with a number of partners. Captain Jarrod Leggett (55) lived up to his name as he ran through the Dandenong bowlers with aplomb. Most effective respite from the carnage came from Mick Sweeney (3/29) with Jack Worrell (2/66) also spinning 20 effective and relatively economical overs. There was little to smile about from Dandenong as it will require its biggest chase of the year to keep in touch with the top eight on the Victorian Premier Cricket ladder.

SPORT Dandenong District Cricket Association - round 9 (week one)

Old hands take the helm By JARROD POTTER WHAT happens when youth fails? You send in the ‘dab hand’.

North Dandenong’s sole star - Nasrat Mulkezada - pushed 35 in a horror day at Reedy Reserve. 113587 Pictures: JARROD POTTER

HALLAM KALORA PARK v SPRINGVALE SOUTH WITH a top order collapse, spearheaded by Hallam Kalora Park’s Corrie Wilson (3/108), Springvale South (6/363) captain Craig Slocombe promoted himself to number four - and didn’t that pay off handsomely. Playing most of his cricket down the order before Christmas, Slocombe has moved himself back up to the top of the pops in 2014 and Saturday proved to be his lucky day as he smashed 163 to guide Springvale South’s renaissance against Hallam Kalora Park. Slocombe saw off the early danger posed by Wilson, Callum Prosser (2/64) and handy overs from the youngster Jordan Hammond (0/45) before cashing in once his eye was set. With Ryan Quirk (42) occupying the other end, the pair added 136 for the fourth wicket before Quirk was rolled by Prosser. Slocombe reached his century and continue to smash the bowling attack to all four points of Hallam Reserve - notching his 10th DDCA century when it mattered most this season. 18 fours and four sixes later, Slocombe finally departed, caught and bowled by Wilson after the most entertaining 151-ball innings in the competition this season. The fun didn’t stop there as R. Kellepotha (36), Jackson Sketcher (29 not out) and Tim Ford (42 not out) were given licence to hit approaching stumps as the Bloods drew a whopping 6/363 out of the home side.

BUCKLEY RIDGES v COOMOORA THE Ridges would’ve thought there were easy points on offer against the lowly Coomoora (7/333), but that was before Rahoul Pankhania and Rob Johnston piled it on. The pair stole any initiative Buckley Ridges seized early by smashing a 240-run partnership. Pankhania (163) and Johnston (82) were eventually dismissed by Luke Fletcher (5/82), who claimed his first five-wicket haul this season. Some late fireworks from Johnston and Lance Baptist (26) pushed the tally past 300 on the Park Oval postage stamp which will require some serious batting from the Ridges to avoid a loss.

Craig Slocombe got his eye in with a rare defensive stroke, but his defence was limited as he piled on 163. 113588 out) chipped away 37 of the required 153 for first innings points. With a batting attack as deep as Berwick has currently, expect a fast accumulation and perhaps a sneaky declaration by Goodes to catch up some points in the division.

HEINZ SOUTHERN DIST v NORTH DANDENONG NORTH Dandenong (98) returned to its previous ways of woe with a drain-circling effort on day one against Heinz Southern Districts (5/118). Nasrat Mulkezada (35) had the only innings of note as Michael Davies (3/20) and Justin Davis (2/22) nipped the new ball around before the icing on the cake was expertly slathered by spin-king Paul Stockdale (4/36). The Northerners achieved moderately better results with ball in hand as it nipped

through five Cobras wickets. Despite half their men returning to the shed, Heinz was led strongly via Adam Semmens (67 not out). With first innings points in the bag, off only 28 overs, expect a slap-dash hit fest on Saturday as Heinz aims to leapfrog Lyndale and secure a handy buffer.

DANDENONG WEST v MORDIALLOC WHALID Ghauri (63) - top marks for batting with grit. Matt Fielding (33) - strong showing to give some support to Ghauri. The rest of Dandenong West’s (126) batting order? The Bulls middle and lower order looked en route to the slaughterhouse as Chathura Athukorala (5/37) continued his domination with the ball. Mordialloc finished up at stumps on 3/37.

BERWICK (0/37) ran through Lyndale (153) like a chainsaw through a birthday cake as the home side had no answers to stop the Bears’ attack. Sporadic resistance came from the top order as Dale Tormey (36) and Jaime Brohier (20) got starts but couldn’t carry on. Their chances of carrying on were exsanguinated by Berwick’s spinners. Captain Jarrod Goodes (4/52) rattled through the order with assistance coming via up-and-coming youngster Tanner Stanton (2/38) to skittle Lyndale. A late fightback from Farazur Rahman (23) and Liam Mara (11 not out) averted complete chaos, but Ryan Crawford (2/18) ensured the last rites would be administered off his pace bowling. Nirmal Wickaramatne (2/34) also impressed with the new nugget and kept things tidy off his 18 overs. In response, the formerly retired Gavan Wills (18 not out) and Darren D’Souza (18 not

PLAYING like a Turf 1 team for a change, Narre Warren (0/13) certainly pushed the ladder-leader Parkfield (178), and as a consequence is in a rare match-winning position heading into day two. Steve Spoljaric (34) was at the crease early following a spate of wickets at the top of the order. Kaushalya Weeraratne pecked away at the Bears’ batting attack before a middle order revival helped Parkfield post something tangibly defendable. Travis D’Souza (33) and Samiddha Gallage (40) kept the scoreboard ticking before Matt Aslett (37) chipped in from the tail. Narre Warren is 0/13 at stumps and needs another 166 runs for victory.

There’s even a touch of torque steer if you really floor it in the lower gears - great fun. A clever link between engine and cabin by way of a ‘Sound Symposer’ channels the engine note to the cabin. The six-speed gearshift is on the notchy side if you want to make fast changes, but is good if you let it change at its own speed. Steering is weighted by just the right amount and gives excellent feedback from the road. Road grip is tenacious and until you’re cornering harder than makes sense on public roads the Fiesta is nicely neutral.

limit an ‘adult happy’ top speed to140 km/h. It also offers programmable speed alerts between 70km/h and 140km/h that can’t be deactivated by the MyKey user; reduces maximum radio volume to maintain driver concentration; disables the radio until the seatbelts are fastened and prevents deactivation of driver assistance and safety technologies. The engine is beautifully responsive, all the more so when you remember it’s turbocharged. There’s good torque on tap from low revs and it’s happy to spin to the rev limiter.
