Doing us proud THE City of Melton’s finest citizens were honoured with Community Achievement Awards as part of Australia Day celebrations last Sunday. Mayor Bob Turner praised the impressive group and said the awards recognised the valuable contribution made to the community by individuals, groups and projects over the past year. And despite the well-deserved acclaim and applause, the winners remained humble when bestowed with the honour. As Citizen of the Year Patrick Gurrie put it: “I’m absolutely stoked”. The Caroline Springs grandfather received the award for his years of service to the community including his work as chairman of St Catherine of Siena Catholic Church Building Project, chairman of the Church Opening and Dedication Organising Committee, and his tireless

efforts as the parish’s special projects initiator and organiser. A dedicated and well-known volunteer, Mr Gurrie is also the Caroline Springs Cricket Club under-15 coach and vice-president of the Caroline Springs Dog Club, where he devotes his time to being an instructor. “I’m the kind of person that doesn’t just want to belong,” he told Star. “I want to roll up my sleeves and get involved ... more people need to have that attitude.” He believes his passion for community service comes from his parents who gave endlessly and were the perfect role model for their children. “In those days people tended to give more of themselves I think, they had less money to give. “I learnt from that and it carried into my adulthood.” Mr Gurrie was joined by the winner

of the inaugural Melton Woman of the Year Award Claire Mouser and Youth Citizen of the Year Award Sara McInnes. The Community Safety Register, which makes phone calls to vulnerable people through a volunteer-based phone service, was named Community Group of the Year. Mrs Mouser, recognised for her voluntary work as a group leader of the 1st Caroline Springs Scout Group, said she was “humbled” upon receiving the award. The dedicated mother-of-two supports a leadership team of 12, and provides mentoring, motivation and leadership example to each and every member of her team. She volunteers five nights a week and also works as an integration aide for children with special needs in local kindergartens. “Sometimes people say I should build my house on top of the Scouts hall, I’m there so much,” she joked. “It’s a great honour for the Caroline

Springs Scout Group ... we’ve only been operating for three years. It’s great recognition.” Mrs Mouser said being part of a community organisation like the Scouts was invaluable to both children and their parents. Youth citizen of the Year Sara McInnes, recognised as an emerging leader within the Melton community, said she was “speechless” when she received the great news. A member of the local Girl Guides group, Sara, 15, is a graduate of the Whitten Youth Leadership Project and in 2013 organised a fundraising drive to benefit the Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia. This drive raised over $400 for the group. “My family was so proud and they just kept saying she’s growing up too fast,” the Taylors Lakes Secondary College student said. “The best part of volunteering is giving back to the community regardless of the awards.”

THE Western Bulldogs will descend onto the City of Melton next week in a bid to gather membership support and thank their most loyal fans. The likes of young gun Mitch Wallis and up and comers Lin Jong and Jack Macrae will be just some of the popular doggies to hit the streets of Melton next Tuesday and Wednesday. Wallis told Star the Bulldogs players are looking forward to hosting various clinics in schools across Melton, while they will also be spending time at the Bacchus Marsh Hospital. The talented midfielder said it is important for the club to

take the opportunity to thank their supporters. “It will be our first time in Melton and it is a great opportunity to mix it with the people of the West,” Wallis said. “It’s very important to meet the people that barrack for the Bulldogs ... especially in areas like Melton that are rapidly growing and to spread our brand and thank them for their support.” The son of former Bulldogs champion Stephen Wallis assured fans that the team was on track to make good progress this season and was looking forward to its first game on 19 February against St Kilda.

“We have a very optimistic outlook ... and can’t wait to start the season. We set the foundation (last year) and now we’re building. “We’ve got a great young list.” The club will host a superclinic on Tuesday, 4 February from 4.15pm to 6pm at Blackwood Driver Reserve in Melton and another at Fitzroy St, Darley. There will also be a coaches forum at Tabcorp Park on the same day from 7pm. And fans can rub shoulders with the players at an instore visit at Australia Post, High St, Melton, on Wednesday 5 February, from 2pm to 3pm.

A 13-YEAR-OLD Melton boy received an official caution from police after he deliberately lit a grass fire late last year. Police believe the teenager was responsible for the fire near Gretel Grove in Melton on 31 December, and interviewed the offender last Wednesday. Meanwhile there were a series of grass fires in and around Taylors Hill and Diggers Rest during Victoria’s recent heatwave which are believed to have been deliberately lit. The fires began along the Calder Freeway, near Calder Park Drive, Holden Rd, the southern Diggers Rest Freeway exit, the Gap Rd Freeway exit and in Racecourse Rd, Sunbury. Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks said police believe most, if not all fires, were deliberately lit and may have been started by the same person. Det Sen Sgt Jenks said luckily all of the fires were extinguished quickly before significant damage of injury was sustained. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Melton police are also warning owners of vacant rental properties to ensure their homes are properly secured after a spate of burglaries this year. Det Sen Sgt Jenks said burglaries on vacant rental premises and vacant homes advertised for sale have increased and said these premises are particularly vulnerable. “It is important that where possible valuable and non-fixture items should not be left at these locations. It is also vital that suspicious behaviour in and around these premises is reported to police,” he said. Garages and sheds have become a target for would-be thieves also and he warned residents to keep them securely locked and never leave the roller door up, even when at home. Police are calling for any information on a white van that was sighted at the scenes of two burglaries in Burnside Heights on Saturday, 18 January. The first burglary occurred in Illawong Terrace, between 12.30 and 1pm and the second occurred in Tenterfield Drive between 2pm and 4.30pm. Computer equipment was stolen.

Good start for kids’ services By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO CHILDREN’S facilities in Melton received a much-needed boost last week as the first sod was turned on both the Atherstone and Botanica Springs children’s and community centres. Mayor Bob Turner and Western Victoria Region MP Simon Ramsay visited the sites in Melton South and said they would help cater for the city’s increasing population. “As our community continues to grow, so does the need for more facilities and services,” Cr Turner said.

“Melton City Council is committed to developing facilities that enable us to deliver quality programs, services and early learning opportunities for our youngest residents.” Cr Turner said the Atherstone and Botanica Springs children’s and community centres will provide important, in-demand services for families in newly establishing communities including kindergarten and maternal and child health. “The construction of both facilities provides council with the opportunity to bring together a range

of programs that build culture, identity and connectivity in these newly emerging communities.” Each facility will consist of three kindergarten rooms, one occasional care room, maternal and child health rooms, community meeting rooms, landscaping and car parking. Both centres are due to open for the commencement of the 2015 kindergarten year and will cost about $6 million each to construct, with the council successful in obtaining $3.5 million in State Government funding for the projects.

No need for speed By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO A POLICE pursuit through Melton last Wednesday led to officers discovering dangerous chemicals allegedly for a drug lab, hidden in the car. Dozens of firemen were called in to remove potentially dangerous chemicals from the vehicle, which was dumped in Burnside.

Officers started the chase in Melton early last Wednesday morning when they noticed a stolen car travelling along Exford Rd, but the pursuit was terminated soon after in neighbouring Burnside. Police then located the stolen vehicle on McGee Close and upon closer inspection discovered hazardous materials inside.

MFB and CFA crews were called to the scene to remove the materials from the car. Meanwhile, police from the Melton Burglary Unit are appealing for public assistance to locate a stolen jet-ski worth about $7000. Investigators believe a burglar broke into the garage of a house on Stoke Heath Way in Caroline

Springs sometime between 7am and 8pm last Monday week. Once inside, the thieves have stolen a Seadoo jet-ski, a continental box trailer and a number aof power tools. Police are keen to speak to anyone that may have seen the jet-ski and trailer in the area and have released images of the stolen items.

Speak up on spending RESIDENTS and community groups in the City of Melton will have the opportunity to speak to their local leaders at upcoming budget engagement sessions. Melton City Council mayor Bob Turner said the council wanted to gain valuable community input for the 2014-2017 period. “This is your opportunity to talk to us before we start preparing the 2014/15 draft budget and finalising our business plans for the next three years,” Cr Turner said. It is expected the 2014/15 draft budget, reviewed Council Plan, Council Action Plan and Strategic Resource Plan will be available for public inspection in May. The budget engagements sessions will be held on Saturday 1 February between 9.30am and 1pm and Monday 3 February between 5pm and 8.30pm at the Melton Community Hall, 232 High Street, Melton. Long-time calisthenics enthusiasts Kim Dunstan and Katie McGuigan will merge years of experience in the

calisthenics arena when they unveil K&K calisthenics this week. Co-principal Kim said the allinclusive club offers a positive outlet for girls, boys and ladies looking for a fun way to get fit, make friends and feel part of the community. Kim, who first began calisthenics in 1974 as a shy youngster, said the artistic sport involves participants

performing choreographed routines to music and pupils can compete at local and state levels. SEVERAL volunteer-run groups in the West have been left devastated after the Federal Government cancelled funding, which would have been used to support community and charity work. The Liberal Government has withdrawn up to $600,000 from groups in the West. The Building Multicultural Communities Program (BMCP) funds had been announced in the national budget by the previous Labor Government. However, the Federal Government has since sent letters to many clubs to say their funding had been terminated. The Footscray-based Vietnamese Community in Australia Victorian Chapter have lost $41,000 they were awarded under the BMCP. Vice-president Viv Nguyen said they needed the funds for works including an air-conditioner and heater at a cultural and heritage centre in Sunshine North. “Naturally I’m very disappointed,” Ms Nguyen said. “But the president and myself have sought assistance to see if we can meet with the relevant minister and see what our prospects are. All is not lost from our perspective.” General manager of Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association in Footscray, Hai Nguyen, said the group has lost $18,500 in promised BMCP funds. “We spent the money in advance because we were told it had to spent by 10 December, then they sent a letter that same day which said we wouldn’t get the money,” he said. Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor said the Minister for Social Services Kevin Andrews needed to explain to community organisations why he was “ripping away their funding”. A spokesperson for the Mr Andrews said the funds have been terminated because the “government is committed to reviewing spending to ensure it is aligned with priorities”.

Wedding expo with a difference By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO IF you’re in the midst of planning that special day, and the decisions on colours, theme, flowers, stationery and photography are just getting too much for you, then it’s probably time to head to Caroline Springs. WestWaters Hotel and Entertainment Complex will become a sea of white, tulle, ribbons and lace on Sunday 9 February when it hosts a wedding expo with a difference. Event organiser and Caroline Springs photographer Brenton Spiteri said brides-to-be and their grooms can take time out of their hectic schedule and visit the expo which will offer stalls and information on just about everything to do with weddings including venues, travel agents, videography, photography, florists, cakes and stationery - with the added bonus that all stallholders are locals.

“Seventeen hundred people visited the expo last year,” he told Star. “This generated a lot of business for suppliers ... and almost everyone got work from it.” Brenton said the day not only offered couples the chance to organise their wedding, but also an opportunity to donate to Heartfelt - a volunteer organisation of professional photographers from all over Australia dedicated to giving the gift of photographic memories to families that have experienced stillbirths, premature births, or have children with serious and terminal illnesses. He said all donations on the day would go to the very worthy charity and help give comfort to families struggling with tragedy. The expo will begin at 10am at WestWaters Hotel and Entertainment Complex, 10-20 Lake St, Caroline Springs.

TEENAGER Alana Kristen Ribarovska is proud to be representing her home suburb Taylors Hill in the Miss Teen Galaxy Pageant Australia 2014 as a Victorian finalist. The 15-year-old will participate in fashion, evening and swimwear segments at the annual competition. She will also be raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the lead-up to the event in March. Last year, Alana raised $1500 for charity with a trivia night during her maiden pageant. Alana made it through to the competition’s national finals last year and also won the Miss Macedonia Melbourne 2013 contest. Alana said she would be wearing a sash emblazoned with ‘Taylors Hill’ at the upcoming Miss Teen Galaxy. “I love it here. I know everyone, they know me and I feel safe here,” she said. Since last year’s competition, Alana has started modelling - including a photo shoot for Elements magazine in America and appearing in PixiFoto’s #Click Campaign. Alana said her confidence had grown since taking part in the 2013 Teen Galaxy event. “I enjoyed it heaps and loved everything about it,” she said. “Even raising the money, I had to increase my confidence and put myself out there and tell people I was entering the pageant.” This year she is looking forward to once again seeing all the friends she made in last year’s pageant. “I want to have fun, but I also want to see how far I can go,” she said. BURNSIDE great-grandfather Ronald McGrath has been recognised in the Australia Day 2014 Honours List, after more than six decades of dedicated volunteer work. The 88-year-old has received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to veterans. Mr McGrath said he was surprised to receive the honour. “My wife would tell you I nearly had a heart attack,” he said. With four sons, seven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild, Mr McGrath has made his family proud. During World War II, Mr McGrath joined the RAAF as an 18-year-old. He served in Queensland and Papua New Guinea as a transport driver. After the war ended, Mr McGrath became a founding member of the Royal Australian Air Force Association 7 Squadron. “We decided after we had made so many friends - officers and gentlemen - right across Australia that we should keep in touch,” he said. Mr McGrath has spent more than 65 years in various roles at the organisation including secretary, treasurer, vice-president and committee member. Mr McGrath is also an accomplished pianist and played at concerts to entertain his RAAF mates during the war. Mr McGrath said his beloved wife Betty has been an inspiration and great support to him throughout their marriage.

Mr and Mrs McGrath helped start the Essendon Civic Association, which went on to establish the Buckley Park Bowling Club, of which Mr

McGrath was the first secretary. The civic association also created the Buckley Park Tennis Club and the Doutta Stars Football Club. Mr McGrath’s proud son, Alan, recalls his Dad driving footy players to games in the back of his flatbed truck and playing the piano at sporting social functions. In addition, his father helped establish the Essendon Probus Club and Essendon Central Probus Club.

Have you ever wondered how Valentine’s Day came about? Another Valentine was an Italian bishop who lived at about the same time, AD 200. He was imprisoned because he secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman emperor. Some legends say he was burned at the stake. The custom of choosing a sweetheart on this date spread through Europe in the Middle Ages, and then to the early American colonies. Throughout the ages, people also believed that birds picked their mates on 14 February.

In 496 AD, Saint Pope Gelasius I declared 14 February as “Valentine’s Day”. Although it’s not an official holiday, most Americans observe this day. Whatever the odd mixture of origins, St Valentine’s Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day that you show your friend or loved one that you care. You can send candy to someone you think is special. Or you can send roses, the flower of love. Most people send their “valentine” a greeting card named after the notes that St Valentine received in jail.

EVERY year, the 14th of February has millions across the world presenting their loved ones with candy, flowers, chocolates and gifts. In many countries, restaurants and eateries are filled with couples eager to celebrate their relationship and the joy of their togetherness through delicious cuisines. St Valentine’s Day has roots in several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages. One of the earliest popular symbols of Valentine’s Day is Cupid, the Roman god of love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow. Several theories surround the history of Valentine’s Day. Many believe 300 years after the death of Jesus Christ, the Roman emperors still demanded that everyone believe in the Roman gods. Valentine, a Christian priest, had been thrown into prison for his teachings. On 14 February, Valentine was beheaded, not only because he was a Christian, but also because he had performed a miracle. He supposedly cured the jailer’s daughter of her blindness. The night before he was executed, he wrote the jailer’s daughter a farewell letter, signing it “From Your Valentine.” Another legend tells us that this same Valentine, well-loved by all, received notes to his jail cell from children and friends who missed him.

Without a prayer By ADEM SARICAOGLU ST ANTHONY’S was on the receiving end of a belting at the hand of Woodend in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup on Saturday. After making just 190 seven days earlier at Woodend’s Gilbert Gordon Oval, the St Anthony’s bowling attack was put to the sword in a stunning 58-over dig from the Woodend top order. Openers Daniel and Josh Eastley produced a 64-run stand before Warren Haffenden finally broke through for St Anthony’s, removing Josh Eastley for 30. However the Woodend juggernaut could not be halted as Marcus Stewart then came in to add 59 alongside Daniel Eastley, who finished with 63. Haffenden then removed Stewart for 48 with 164 on the board, but from there Woodend took St Anthony’s to the cleaners with Adam Johnstone and Luke Barker at

St Anthony’s had no answer as the pair combined for an unbeaten 122 runs - the majority of which came off Barker’s bat. firm unbeaten on 27. St Anthony’s was then sent in for a second dig and was forced to navigate a fiery 23-over spell. As it did in the first innings St Anthony’s struggled to get going, losing two wickets before even registering double

figures on the scoreboard. A dogged 30 from middle-order bat Robert Evans was the lone highlight as St Anthony’s stumbled its way through to stumps, finishing at 7/109. St Anthony’s remains last with little hope of getting off the bottom of the table ahead of this weekend’s home clash against Wallan. Meanwhile third-placed Bacchus Marsh suffered a stiff nine-run loss to fellow finals contender Sunbury at Clarke Oval on Saturday. Chasing just 149 for victory, Bacchus Marsh struggled to contain strike Sunbury bowlers Jason McGann and Brad Hunter as the pair combined for eight wickets. Ian Spiteri was the lone standout with the bat as Bacchus Marsh crumbled late in the piece, managing to reach 139 in response to fall nine runs short of victory. Bacchus Marsh will host Woodend at Maddingley Park this weekend.
