Pix has now returned home after spending a few nights recovering at the vet with a big gash around her neck and wounds on her legs and back. “There is one section of really bruised skin on one of her wounds and the vet said in attacks like this that skin could die and she may need more operations,” Mrs Ray said. Mr Ray said he believes he would not be out of pocket $1000 if the owners had obeyed the dog rules in the area. “I wouldn’t want the dogs to be put down or anything but this situation could have easily been avoided,” he said. “The rangers have a lot of things to do but they don’t seem to be around when people are walking dogs that are often off their lead in this area.” Yarra Ranges Council said despite a search of the area, the council was unable to find the dogs responsible for the attack. “We are monitoring the condition of the other dog and will conduct regular patrols in the area,” they said. “If anyone has any information on the incident, contact our Local Laws Department on 1300 368 333.”

KALLISTA residents Veronica and John Ray are $1000 out of pocket after their beloved dog Pix was attacked last Tuesday. The couple were taking Pix on an evening stroll on Tuesday 21 January about 6pm when the dog was brutally attacked by two other dogs that were not on leads in Kallista Primary School. “The two dogs were on the school oval with their owners when they came over to us,” Mrs Ray said. “I just expected the dogs to have a sniff of Pix and then return to their owners on call. “Instead the dogs attacked and when called by the owners they did not listen.” Mrs Ray said she was screaming trying to get the dogs to stop and even after her husband threw himself over Pix the dogs continued to attack. “The dogs were eventually dragged off by their owners but I was in such a state of shock I didn’t get their names,” she said. “I do know that one of the dogs looked to be a great Dane and the other an American bulldog.” Mrs Ray said she knows a lot of people in the area who also have small dogs that have been attack by dogs being exercised while not on leads. “I feel the owners of these attacking dogs

Anti-tag teams tool up TWO community groups have received a new tool to wipe out graffiti in their towns. It is a whole of community problem which is being tackled with a whole community approach. Minister for Crime Prevention Edward O’Donohue joined Gembrook MP Brad Battin to deliver graffiti removal kits to Belgrave South Neighbourhood House and MADCOW. The Belgrave South and Monbulk communities are not strangers to graffiti, their walls, fences and signs have long been used as a blank canvas by those keen to mark their territory. MADCOW’S Carmel Mitchell said the battle against graffiti would always go on, but said the whole community approach seemed to be working in Monbulk. “We had a clean-up day in November and the whole community got involved,” Ms Mitchell said. “When it’s little I can manage it myself, but these kits will really help with the bigger stuff. “We’ve found if we act quickly and remove the tags it acts as a greater deterrent - they want to see their work up there for all to see. “So if they can’t see it anymore, they move on.” Belgrave South Community House’s Graham Bergroth said that graffiti was a big problem. “These kits will save time and money for us.” – Melissa Meehan

PROTECTIVE Service Officers (PSOs) have been patrolling Ferntree Gully train station’s platforms for a year, and police believe that the area is safer as a result. PSOs were first deployed to Ferntree Gully Station on 22 January 2013 and marked their first anniversary with a business-as-usual shift at the station, beginning at 6pm. Danny Baines and Aaron Rouge Serrett were the two PSOs on duty for the evening, patrolling the platforms at the station from 6pm until the final service. The pair were squad-mates and graduated together in March last year, before being deployed to Boronia around nine months ago - they patrol Boronia, Bayswater, Ferntree Gully and Upwey stations. Officer Baines said that he believed PSOs presence at train stations helped the general public to feel safer, by creating a police presence to deter potential criminals. “I think it helps - we get good feedback from everyone,” he said. Officer Rouge Serrett said that his favourite part about being a PSO was interacting with the people who passed through the station each day. “It’s always rewarding when members of the public thank you for what you’re doing out here,” he said. “It makes it all worthwhile.” Knox police Senior Sergeant John Hess told the Mail that PSOs provide public confidence in safety at train stations, which are often subject to crimes such as theft and criminal damage.

A BELGRAVE man has been remanded to face court after police charged him with possession of a handgun with a silencer. A passer-by noticed the gun and contacted police. The 40-year-old man is known to police.

“They have been very fruitful in identifying known offenders and suspects and provide us with quality information that usually results in intelligence for general policing,” he said. “Their work is appreciated by us.” Mr Hess said that he would like to see PSO deployment roll out to Upper Ferntree Gully Station in the future. A SHOT was fired from rifle when a group of four men took justice into their own hands last week. Police have charged four men after they visited a Yellingbo property believing the resident had stolen their property in an earlier burglary. Lilydale CIU Detective Senior Constable Mark Smithwick said one of the men had fired a shot with a .22 rifle when they arrived at the address. “They’ve taken matters into their own hands,” Sen Cons Smithwick said. “And now they are facing the courts.” He said the four men were charged with common law assault and reckless conduct endangering life. They will face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 5 May.

AFTER much anticipation, Emerald’s Worrell Reserve is now officially a Neighbourhood Safer Place - Place of Last Resort (NSP-PLR). Worrell Reserve – one of three designated NSPs now in the Cardinia Shire – was a contentious decision by council, which received a vehement backlash from a section of the community after 50 Monterey cypress trees were cut down. And despite the NSP being approved, residents are still speaking with the Ombudsman and investigating the consultation process surrounding the removal of the trees. “Now that it has been designated as an NSP, it is up to the council to explain how they exempted themselves from the same planning process they have held the community accountable to,” resident Mary Farrow said. “The Cardinia Planning Scheme identifies the significance of the exotic hedges on Belgrave Gembrook Road as having significant vegetation to be protected. “Also, the Cardinia Heritage Study, adopted by the council in 2011, lists the Emerald Reserve on the list of places of significance to be protected.” Cockatoo Sports Ground and Worrell Reserve, Emerald, in addition to the existing NSP-PLR in Gembrook, will act as places of last resort for nearby residents when all other bushfire plans have failed.

A RELEASE of 2.5 billion litres of water from the Upper Yarra Dam is underway to help keep the Yarra River healthy and maintain habitat. The Yarra River which runs from the upper reaches below the dam into Melbourne will benefit from the fresh flow of water after a hot dry January according to Melbourne Water Waterways Manager David Norman. Mr Norman said the flows were a way of enhancing river health and supporting the natural environment by flushing out sediment and supporting the habitat of plants and animals in the river. “We’ve seen a period of record-breaking hot, dry days this month and in conditions like that there is the potential for water quality to decline,” he said. “Environmental flows allow us to mimic natural environmental processes by releasing fresh water into the system. “Environmental flow releases are a vital part of healthy river management and ensure that even in challenging conditions Melbourne’s waterways thrive.” He said the flush of fresh water, part of Melbourne Water’s annual 17-billion litre allocation for the Yarra, also encouraged vegetation growth along the banks leading to a healthier river ecosystem. Melbourne Water undertakes extensive analysis to ensure the water released does not exceed the natural variance range of the river.

Weeds money helps clear line A LOCAL Landcare group received a boost under a Victorian Coalition Government grants program which provided more than $1 million to environment volunteer programs across the State. Member for Eastern Victoria Region Edward O’Donohue met with Glenn Brooks-MacMillan, Landcare Facilitator for the Southern Ranges Environment Alliance (SREA), which is set to receive the funds. “These grants recognise and reward the hard work of our local volunteers who are dedicated to making sure Victoria’s natural environment can be enjoyed by future generations,” he said. “A $500 grant will be delivered to the SREA through the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Au-

thority. This funding will assist the SREA to continue its incredible work which benefits both the local community and the environment.” Mr Brooks-MacMillan said the funds would help the SREA to continue its environmental work throughout The Yarra Ranges, Cardinia Shire and parts of the City of Casey. He said a current, major project for the SREA was carrying out weed management and revegetation along the Puffing Billy Railway line. “More than 250,000 visitors come to Puffing Billy every year, so we’re trying to raise awareness within the local community around weed removal and protecting and maintaining native plants which in turn benefits native animals,” he said.

The event, at the Olinda Hall on Sunday 2 February from 10am to 3pm will be fun for the whole family. There will be a visit from Captain Koala, food and drinks, a jumping castle and slides, facepainting, balloon animals, colouring competitions and much more. Informative demonstrations will be held throughout the day from 11am. In the event of a Total Fire Ban, this event will be cancelled.

MOTORISTS now have a chance to nominate roads that have become dangerous, fallen into disrepair and need fixing through a new Labor initiative. Monbulk MP James Merlino said VicRoads documents show the Napthine government is shortchanging families and businesses when it comes to making roads safe. Mr Merlino said the VicRoads Metro South East Region has been swindled with funding decreasing by just over $17 million from the financial years 2011-12 to 2012-13. “Our community deserves better than a Government that won’t provide the basic infrastructure that people need to ensure travel times are effective for business and therefore a strong local economy,” he said. “Safety on our local road is not just about driver behaviour but also the quality of our roads which must be safe to drive on. Last year the Mail reported on one stretch of Monbulk Road from the roundabout in Kallista to Wedgewood Avenue that has local residents concerned.

Despite the section on Monbulk Road from the Belgrave roundabout to Wedgewood Avenue undergoing repair work late last year, VicRoads said the other section had been submitted in a bit for the 2014-15 funding program. VicRoads Regional Director Adam Maguire said until then maintenance crews are keeping the road safe with regular maintenance including pothole patching and Rough Surface signs in place to alert road users. Mr Merlino said the Opposition’s campaign will allow local motorists to tell Labor which roads have been neglected and are in serious need of repair or an upgrade. “Denis Napthine is cutting funds to every road in every part of Victoria and here in the electorate of Monbulk, local motorists are copping the full brunt of these cuts,” he said. “Our local roads such as Monbulk Road and Belgrave-Hallam Road are falling into disrepair and becoming a safety hazard for motorists.” For more information on Labor’s campaign, visit www.FixOurRoads. com.au.

As for the 60 miserably-paid McJobs... how many local businesses will be forced to the wall? Mr White also makes predictable references to the work of Ronald McDonald House. Corporate Accountability International’s October 2013 exposĂŠ Clowning Around with Charity of the deceitful and downright fraudulent claims of McDonald’s actual charitable contributions should be read by anyone who still believes McDonald’s is a sincere and altruistic corporation. Truth tightening I WRITE in reply to our local member Christine Fyffe’s allegations that I was loose with the truth when I wrote criticizing her Government’s response to our local TAFE issue. Firstly when I penned my original letter I was not endorsed as the ALP candidate for Evelyn, therefore it would have been a little presumptuous of me to say that I was. Secondly in 2009 when the old Swinburne University Act was changed Christine was our local member, as these changes went through unopposed I can only suggest that she actually voted for these changes. Next, if so much money has been invested in vocational and education training why has our local member not been able to secure some of this funding to restore our TAFE or is it a fact that this investment is well overstated, you can’t have it both ways. Does the local member forget that it is her team that is in government and that it is they that need to come up with a solution not the opposition or local council or independent body, it’s time to show some leadership. As for me not being concerned about this issue, I have given up my time attending meeting after meeting since this first became an issue and the only thing that seems to be a stalling point is that this government refuses to provide our local community with the resources to have a TAFE. Cash boost for La Trobe By MELISSA MEEHAN THE La Trobe electorate is flush with cash as the Liberal Federal Government delivers on its election promises. Through the newly established Community Development Grants Program, Federal Member for La Trobe, Jason Wood has announced that his government would provide up to $4.68 million towards eight projects in the electorate. “These were part of my

election promises and have now been confirmed by Jamie Briggs, Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development,” Mr Wood said. “I look forward to continuing my work with all project proponents to help implement these economically productive initiatives and deliver genuine benefits to the people of the electorate.” Included in the promises, $500,000 will assist with the

Pool fight heats up By MELISSA MEEHAN THE FIGHT to save the Olinda Pool continues as supporters of the pool plan to attend the council meeting tonight (Tuesday). Following a community meeting last week, John Faull said support to save the pool was strong and not falling by the wayside. “It was a constructive meeting, but people do have the frustrating feeling that we are going nowhere,” Mr Faull said. “We’re still waiting for the councils report.” Councillor Jason Callanan

also attended the community meeting last week, and Mr Faull said he was thankful for his support. “Jason was very helpful, he seemed to understand the need for this pool and said the council should be heading in the direction to save the pool,” Mr Faull said. He said the next plan of attack was to attend the council meeting and show the councillors how important the pool was to the community. Another community meeting will be held at the Olinda CFA on Thursday 30 January, at 7pm.

OVER three decades of commitment to Mount Evelyn has been celebrated by the Yarra Ranges Council, as the Environmental Achiever of the Year award goes to not one recipient, but a couple. Jean and David Edwards were given the Environmental Achiever of the Year award in this year’s Australia Day Awards, which was run out of Yarra Glen Memorial Hall on Sunday 26 January. The couple received their award for their powerful campaigning over the years to keep Mount Evelyn’s environment in pristine condition and to protect the aqueduct land. The pair’s involvement in the aqueduct began in May

1979, when they became aware that the land would be sold off for development. Jean and David founded the Friends of Aqueduct Park group, which organised petitions and, ultimately, ensured that the land was retained and that the council fulfilled its management plan for the land in 1991. “When we heard, we immediately stopped work and got petitions going,” Jean said. The pair told the Mail that their award was a complete surprise, but that they were appreciative of being recognised by the council. “It’s always nice to have your work appreciated,” David said. The pair cites their greatest

achievement in the area as the establishment of the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct Walking Trail, which is popular for those traversing the area. Jean is a member of the Yarra Ranges Environmental Advisory Committee and a representative on the Community Reference Group for Cave Hill and is involved in the Mount Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association. The pair runs a sustainable home which uses recycled materials and low amounts of energy, as well as maintaining a 15acre block of land that they say has environmental significance. The Mail would like to congratulate Jean and David Edwards for their Environmental Achiever of the Year award.

THE Dandenong Ranges had its fair share of winners in last weekend’s Australia Day awards, with a primary school student and caring community member taking out accolades. The Patch Primary School student, 10-year-old Georgia Grimmer received the Ken McIntosh Memorial Award for Young Environmental Achiever of the Year, while Monbulk’s Judy Thorburn received a certificate of recognition in the council’s 26 January ceremony. Georgia received her award for her commitment in improving her school’s wildlife habitats, through leading teams to restore a fern gully and helping to remove and control weeds. The young environmental stalwart

has brought many other students with her on a crusade to protect the natural environment and has become the student spokesperson for her school’s environmental work. Her enthusiastic work earned her an award in the Yarra Ranges Council’s Australia Day Awards, which was held at Yarra Glen Memorial Hall on the Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, Ms Thorburn was recognised for her work with the Monbulk Care Network and its care shop, which she has been part of for years. She has been an instrumental force in organising the group’s Christmas hampers, which help up to 70 local families, and co-ordinates support and information services. Accolades all round A NUMBER of Yarra Valley community members and organisations were hailed for their work by the council, receiving high accolades in the yearly awards for their service. Healesville Interchurch Community Care Inc (HICCI), Coldstream’s Phyllis Dixon, Warburton resident Norman Orr, Millgrove resident Lily Belle Hellicar and Healesville’s Michael Halligan all received various awards in the Yarra Ranges Council’s Australia Day Awards on 26 January. HICCI, which is made up of five members of staff and over 100 volunteers, received the prestigious Community Group of the Year award for its work to service more than 600 families. The group runs three core programs to help community members: Emergency Relief, Volunteer Transport and Community Meals - each helps members of the community in various aspects of their lives. Ms Dixon, a Yarra Ranges resident for the past 62 years,

founded the Yarra Valley Over 50s Friendship Club in 1994, and has been the president for the past two decades. Throughout that time, she has assisted elderly members of the community to build strong relationships and friendships, as well as remaining secretary for the Mount Evelyn Tennis Club for 20 years. She received the Mayor’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in communities across the Yarra Ranges. Mr Orr was named as the winner of the Ian De La Rue Award for Community Leadership in the award ceremony for his work to improve the Warburton Community. Through his work on the original steering committee to found the Upper Yarra Community Enterprise, 16 years as the Warburton Post Master and the Warburton Chamber of Commerce, Mr Orr has dedicated immeasurable amounts of his time to his local community. Lily Belle Hellicar, 17, received an award for Young Citizen of the Year,

following three years of volunteering with Koha Community Café, where she is now the volunteer co-ordinator and takes part in major fund-raising events. Mr Halligan received a certificate of recognition in the awards for his support to the Healesville Rotary Club, particularly following the Black Saturday bushfires, in supplying and donating trailers for community members and events. The community members were all thanked for their generous work in their individual communities. Award recipients:

Scaling the police heights THE world game brought Sergeant Fiona Tolmie to Australia more than 30 years ago. “I was married to a soccer player. He played for Box Hill, which was state league at that time - they bought us out here,” she said. The 21-year-old left her home in a small fishing town in Scotland’s north east, Arbroath, with a toddler in tow and another baby on the way. Luckily, she instantly fell in love with her new home. “The soccer club were really welcoming and most of them had come from the UK,” she said. “At the airport the whole committee met us and threw their arms around us and they became our family straight away.” Sgt Tolmie returned to her nursing career after her second child was born but soon longed for a change. She tried her hand at swimming, teaching and restaurant management before Victoria Police’s mounted branch caught the horse enthusiast’s eye. “Since joining I decided that I’d keep my hobby of horses separate from work so I’ve never actually worked in the Mounted Branch,” she said. But a property in the hills and the top job at Emerald Police Station allow her to indulge in her equestrian passion and love for community policing.

Emerald Sergeant Fiona Tolmie drew a curious glance or two from her neighbours when she made the leap from nurse to police officer as told to reporter Casey Neill. “The thing I love about it is you get to know the community, you get to know your offenders,” she said. “You get to know the shopkeepers and they’re very good at feeding us information, which you just don’t get in the city.” Sgt Tolmie is looking forward to the new Emerald police station opening its doors early next year, with 24-hour response capability. Staffing will grow from herself and seven staff to “a senior sergeant, four sergeants probably and around 15 or 16 troops”. “At this stage we’re looking at increasing staffing levels slowly prior to the move,” she said. “It will make a big difference to the area. At the moment people know the times that we finish. There’s not always coverage overnight.” Sgt Tolmie was 33 years old when she decided to join the force - just one

birthday shy of the academy’s entry cut-off at the time. “I didn’t know if I’d actually be able to get in or not,” she said. “Back then the physical side was quite difficult and one of the components was a running track. “On the second lap you had to take in a number of obstacles and one of them was a six-foot wall. “I used to go home and practise on my six-foot wall,” she said. “My neighbours thought I was mad because instead of walking up the garden path I’d jump over the fence!” Sgt Tolmie made it through her training and quickly found her niche in dealing with sexual offences and child abuse. “You’ve got to be the sort of person that doesn’t take that work home,” she said. “One of the most difficult things was if you dealt with a child that was a

Sergeant Fiona Tolmie has been in the police force for more than Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS 20 years. 105947 similar age to your own kids.” Despite her best efforts, she said some cases stuck with her. “It’s not always the worst case, it’s the child’s reaction and where they haven’t been supported by their parents,” she said. “The bottom line was to try and make the kids safe.” Sgt Tolmie’s determination to do so put her in the spotlight. “I was the first person to charge someone under the mandatory reporting legislation,” she said.

“And that was a school principal. That made headlines and caused a lot of drama.” Sgt Tolmie has tried her hand at undercover operations, taught at the academy and stepped into the Victoria Police corporate world but it’s community policing that has her heart. The 55-year-old is looking forward to welcoming the changes and the challenges that lie ahead at Emerald. “My intention is to work for probably another eight years and just be out here,” she said.

Fun art that appeals to these little hands By REBECCA BILLS AN exciting new initiative has little hands getting creative at Burrinja Gallery. The gallery has partnered with the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) to present Kids on Tour - a tour to bring specially created children’s activities to the wider Victoria community. The interactive activities developed for the program by Melbourne Now artists, Hotham Street Ladies, John Nixon, Selina Ou, Jan Senbergs, Meredith Turnbull and Preston Zly, offer engaging works that encourage young audiences to draw, photograph, make, play and decorate. Executive officer Ross Farnell said Burrinja is really excited to be able to team up with NGV and other regional galleries across the state to bring the program to the Dandenong Ranges. “The Melbourne Now exhibition is one of the most ambitious contemporary art and design exhibition projects ever undertaken by the NGV,” he said. “Bringing a part of that to Burrinja is a fabulous opportunity.” Melbourne Now is an initiative to celebrate the latest art, architecture, design, performance and cultural practice to reflect the rich creative landscape that makes up Melbourne. Tables could turn By CHRIS ANDERSON ON THE outside, round 11 in D.J. Strachan Shield shaped as a one-sided round as the top four sides shaped up against the bottom four sides. For those in the know, the round shaped as a season defining one as although the bottom four had slipped one and a half games behind the front runners, they have all shown glimpses of being worthy participants in finals action. The reality of the situation is that if any of these bottom four sides can’t muster up a victory, their finals chances all but disappear. Yarra Junction certainly put their best foot forward when they travelled to Mount Evelyn in search of closing the gap. In a war of attrition, honours were shared after the first hour as the Junction bowlers restricted the home side with some disciplined lines and lengths. With the Rovers somewhat standing firm, the opportunity presented itself for the batsmen to kick on, but it wasn’t to be the case as the Eagles’ bowling was proving difficult to get away and in due course the home side lost regular wickets forcing the pace. Troy Hancock made some inroads before lunch with 36 and an enterprising partnership between Daniel (29) and Jesse Fraser (27) after lunch looked to be steering the Rovers to a decent total, but it wasn’t to be as the experience and guile of Daniel Lever (5/35) and Terry Ottrey (3/27) ensured the Eagles were well on top, dismissing the home side for a disappointing 134. As is so often the case when a team is bowled out cheaply, the reward is to survive a tricky spell to close out the opening day of the contest. With 12 overs to face, the Eagles made a brisk start, however three wickets in two overs saw the visitors finish at 3/29 opening the door for the Rovers. With talent still in the sheds, one would have Yarra Junction still in front of this contest, however early wickets next would surely swing the pendulum in Mount Evelyn’s favour. Woori Yallock travelled to Coldstream keen to keep their finals hopes alive in a game that promised plenty, belying the gap on the ladder. Woori Yallock has challenged many teams this season, but has often fallen short, leaving it in a sticky predicament. Entering this game, the Tigers would’ve seen this game as an ideal opportunity to reverse the trend as Coldstream have been battling some demons of late after jumping the competition at the start of the season. Woori Yallock opened the game with the bat and compiled a reasonable score against some good bowling. Jarrod Bayliss (3/26) made an immediate impression on the contest. As he has done on many occasions this season, Bayliss put the Tigers under early pressure with key wickets. In recent matches, it has been the Tigers’ top order that has made the bulk of the runs, so with the early wickets there were some nervous Woori followers. A hard-fought partnership between the hard hitting Simon Young (37) and the reli-

able Tim Diggins (67 not out) set the visitors on the right track and despite a late order fightback from Liam Doughty (3/42), Woori Yallock was ble the scratch together a defendable total of 185. Like Yarra Junction, the Crocs faced a tricky couple of overs to close out the day, and found themselves 1/14 at the close. Coldstream has talented, but recently flawed, batting line-p and one suspects that if they click into gear then they will cruise to the target, but if this doesn’t happen, Woori has talented and versatile attack that will make short work of the struggling Crocs. Hoddles Creek hosted Healesville in what looks on paper to be a lopsided affair as it is top against bottom. Hoddles Creek have great pride in their club, and would be keen to see a tough season out with the taste of victory. On the other hand, Healesville will be viewing the last month of the season as an opportunity to fine tune before an assault on a long-waited premiership. The visitors batted first and made an immediate impact on the scoreboard. Geoff Stock and Johnny Heywood have formed a valuable alliance at the top of the order for the Bloods, and they took the challenge up to the improving Wombats’ opening bowlers. If Healesville is to take the next step from finalist to premier then it needs to capitalise on the starts. As has happened so often this season, as good as Stock and Heywood have batted, they are yet to make a ‘big one’ as they have continually faltered when they’ve had the bowling attack on their knees. This week was no different. Regular contributions throughout the batting line-up, highlighted by an entertaining 23 from Chance Burridge, ensured the Bloods’ innings continued to flow, however a total of 174 on a small and quick ground would be a disappointing return from a top-of-the-table team. The experienced bowling pair of Mick Batten (3/40) and Brenton Derix (3/61) fought hard for the Wombats as they shouldered most of the work load. On form alone, Healesville probably has enough runs on the board with their attack, however the Wombats have enough experience in their line-up that if they can weather the early onslaught they may give themselves a chance of chasing the runs down the further they get into the day. In the final game of the round, Seville flexed its muscles at Warburton as it tried to straighten the season. The home side batted first and struggled to make a fist of run making against the might of the Seville attack. Brent Clinch played a solo hand contributing 35 in a paltry score of 102. With a win crucial to their progression this season, the Burras needed to make early inroads into Seville’s batting line-up, but the hard hitting Adam Burns was having none of it. Winners all the way By STEVE UTTING ANOTHER great weekend for the Monbulk Juniors, with all teams winning. The U15s remain on top of the ladder after defeating Lysterfield. Monbulk made 176 chasing 7/160. Captain Aaron Gillard (pic attached) continued his fine form, retiring on 50 and was well backed by John Badgery who made 25. The U13 Hawks/Knights also had another win and sit second on the ladder. Chasing The Basins 5/71, Monbulk made 2/99. Gift suits sport of all ages SHERBROOKE Little Athletics Centre held its fourth annual Sherbrooke Gift at Kings Park in Upper Ferntree Gully on Saturday. A handicap race system based on each athlete’s best performance throughout the season had competitors starting at various points along the 100m track. After a series of early morning heats, the athlete with the fastest time from each age group (under-6 to seniors) then advanced through to the final, which is a mixed age final, using the same handicapping system. At the end of a couple of fantastically close races, the winner of the girls’ final was under-11 girl Alannah Waterson. The winner of the

would be back next year to defend their titles. Athletes also competed in a pentathlon competition during the morning with points being awarded for performances in each event ribbons being awarded to all participants.

Manion snatches upset win By STEVE BROWN YOUNG Belgrave medium pacer Luke Manion won’t forget his performance against Ferntree Gully for quite some time, as he steered the bottom side to an unlikely win to complete round 10 of the Norm Reeves Shield at the weekend. Chasing 280, the Gully Blues were right on track at 4/191 with Victorian Country U/21 batsman Josh Henry producing the goods with a stylish 92 until Manion produced the breakthrough and tore the tail apart with an outstanding 7/35 and ended the match with a dream hat-trick. With three rounds remaining, the win gives the Magpies a ray of hope of avoiding relegation and has caused grief to the Blues who were eyeing off a spot in the four. Ninth place, Upper Gully dodged a bullet with a great win over Upwey Tecoma by four wickets. Set 166 for victory, the Kings were well served by Paul Henry (55 not out) and wicket keeper Darren Osbourne with 37, and no doubt wish to finish the season strongly. Knoxfield’s Scott McKenzie was the chief destroyer with 5/53 in the Knights 25-run win over Monbulk who were bundled out for 170 with only Blake Walter (64) registering a score of any note. Knox Gardens top order batsmen

failed to cash in on several starts and were behind the eight ball for most of the day against Johnson Park (273). The Falcons were 6/91 until Josh Gregory produced some resistance with an unbeaten 46, but ran out of partners with the score on 177. All rounder Ben Stallworthy bowled in the right areas and was rewarded with 4/37 for the Sharks. Top side Eildon Park kept a stranglehold on Footballers who never recovered from their overnight score of 3/17 in pursuit of 205. Feaver Medallist Nick Bogar was the only batsman to register 30 as the Panther attack of Sinclair, Caton-Robertson and Snyman combined well and dismissed the Ballers for just 121 at Pickett Reserve. The association was well represented last week in Division One of the Bendigo Country Week carnival, losing the grand final to the powerful Goulburn Murray Cricket Association. The young FTGDCA team with an average age of 19 suffered a heavy loss to the eventual premiers on day one before bouncing back and winning the next three matches all in the final over and a place in the final. Country carnival beckons for allrounder Walker STAR Emerald all-rounder A.J. Walker has been named in a 14man squad to represent the West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) at the ‘Country Week’ carnival next month. Walker, the Bombers’ captaincoach, was rewarded for his strong performances with both bat and ball so far this season - sitting in the top 20 of the WGCA Premier division’s lists of leading run-scorers and wicket-takers. Walker had a particularly strong start to the season before an arm injury interrupted his run of form. He currently has 215 runs to his name with a top score of 98, and 12 wickets at an average of 19.42. Now that he has secured his place in the Country Week squad, Walker will be looking to cement a spot in the starting 11 with strong performances for his club between

now and the WGCA’s first match of the carnival on 17 February against Warragul at Casey Fields in Cranbourne. Emerald’s Premier grade side desperately needs that production as it looks to stave off relegation back to the District competition, after winning premier grade status last season. The Bombers are currently locked in a three-way relegation battle which also includes Pakenham Upper-Toomuc and Upper Beaconsfield. The last-placed side will drop back to District level. If the WGCA Warriors Country Week side is to progress to the grand final, it must win all of its preliminary matches - against Warragul, Sunraysia (on 18 February in Werribee), Wangaratta (on 19 February at Elsternwick Park), and Goulburn Murray (on 20 February in Northcote).
