MEET the City of Maribyrnong’s first Indigenous Citizen of the Year. Maribyrnong resident Francine Riches took out the municipality’s top honour over the weekend at the council’s annual Australia Day Civic Awards ceremony. “I feel really blessed, and I’d like to say it’s a real pleasure and privilege to live in this community, and to bring people together, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous,” Ms Riches said. Ms Riches is an artist that has dedicated her life to bridge the gap between the Indigenous and nonIndigenous community. She was born in the Kimberleys a Bardi-Djawi woman and moved to Maribyrnong four years ago after one of her three sons received a sports scholarship through Maribyrnong Secondary College. She has furthered reconciliation by playing an integral role in developing and implementing Reconciliation Action Plans at the Western Region Health Centre and Maribyrnong Secondary College. As a practising artist for the past 25 years, Ms Riches has developed and supported the artistic talents of local Indigenous people. She has also established a national program to support young Indigenous people by connecting them with chaplaincy from their

IT MIGHTN’T look like much now, but in a year’s time this site will house the new wing of Footscray’s Western Private Hospital. A team of five are currently working on the foundations of the site, which is situated directly across the road from the existing hospital building. More builders and tradesmen will come on site as construction progresses. Meanwhile, across the road, works on a third state-of-the-art operating theatre is almost complete and is set to open in March, allowing for more major surgeries, including cardiovascular surgery. The mammoth $30 million redevelopment, which started last year, will see the existing hospital revamped and a new facility built across the road. The new three-storey complex will be built across three blocks and will link up to the existing hospital by an enclosed bridge to provide a fully integrated hospital. The project will be fully funded by private shareholders, with works scheduled for completion by January 2015. The hospital will be renamed Stanlake Private Hospital once the works are complete. A second stage is in planning which will expand the hospital with an additional 100 beds. Last year, the hospital also opened an administrative office across the road along Eleanor St

THE State Opposition has promised voters a 24-hour weekend public transport system if it gets elected this November. The Labor Party has pledged a $50 million trial over 12 months that would see trains, trams and buses running all weekend, every weekend. If elected, the Labor Party promises to have the system up and running by New Year’s Eve 2015. The announcement comes two months after the Opposition unveiled its transport plan Project 10,000, which promises a toll way between the West Gate Freeway and the Port of Melbourne; an extra lane each way on the West Gate Freeway; and $300 million towards the Melbourne Metro Rail Project. “The new Homesafe Trains will mean workers in Melbourne’s West who work in the city will have the added options to get home on Fridays and Saturdays,” Shadow Public Transport Minister Jill Hennessy said. “Residents in Melbourne’s West who have an evening out in the city face a situation where they are either running for the last train, waiting hours for the first one, or trying to find a cab, it’s not good enough. “A world-class, 24-hour city like Melbourne needs 24-hour public transport and Victorian Labor will make it happen. Labor will run trains, trams and buses all night, every weekend - a 24-hour service.” But State Treasurer Michael O’Brien said information from Public Transport Victoria and the Department of Justice reveal that Labor’s costings were wrong, with the project likely to cost around $102.2 million. “Daniel Andrews’ latest election thoughtbubble is one that he cannot pay for, so Victorian transport users will be left with the bill,” Mr O’Brien said.

Cultural groups cut By ALESHA CAPONE and CHARLENE MACAULAY SEVERAL volunteer-run groups in the West have been left devastated after the Federal Government cancelled funding, which would have been used to support community and charity work. The Liberal Government has withdrawn up to $600,000 from groups in the West. The Building Multicultural Communities Program (BMCP) funds had been announced in the Federal budget by the previous Labor Government, however, the Abbott Government has since sent letters to many clubs to say their funding had been terminated. The Footscray-based Vietnamese

Community in Australia Victorian Chapter have lost $41,000 they were awarded under the BMCP. Vice-president Viv Nguyen said they needed the funds for works including an air-conditioner and heater at a cultural and heritage centre in Sunshine North. “Naturally I’m very disappointed,” Ms Nguyen said. “But the president and myself have sought assistance to see if we can meet with the relevant minister and see what our prospects are. All is not lost from our perspective.” General manager of Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association in Footscray, Hai Nguyen, said the group has lost $18,500 in promised BMCP funds.

“We spent the money in advance because we were told it had to be spent by 10 December, then they sent a letter that same day which said we wouldn’t get the money,” he said. “We are a not-for-profit organisation and we depend on the government and community volunteers for support.” Last week, Gellibrand MP Tim Watts and the Opposition spokeswoman for Citizenship and Multiculturalism Michelle Rowland visited the Polish Club in Albion, which has lost $160,000 funding. Other groups which could have potentially lost funding include the Sri Durga Arts Culture/Educational Centre in Rockbank, the Hobsons Bay Salvation Army in Altona and

the Australian Arabic Women’s Community Group in Newport. “They’ve (the government) abolished the position of Multicultural Minister and it’s unsurprising that they’ve now abolished the programs associated with it,” Mr Watts said. “We invest in these communities so that they can better integrate themselves in the Australian way of life. “The communities that won these grants are the success story of Australian multiculturalism, and to see this funding torn away from them is heartbreaking.” A spokesperson for Mr Andrews said the funds have been terminated because the “government is committed to reviewing spending to ensure it is aligned with priorities”.

Medal makes the best of a bad situation By CHARLENE MACAULAY JOSHUA Hose knows more than anyone the way that life can change in an instant. On Australia Day 2005, the then 18-year-old was in a car with three mates when the driver lost control of the vehicle and the car rolled down an embankment, dislocating Joshua’s neck and making him a paraplegic. Fast forward to today, and the 27-year-old Footscray resident is a Paralympic gold medallist and has just received a Medal of the Order of Australia. Mr Hose said he was honoured to make the Australia Day Honours List. “You see all these other people (that have received an OAM) and you sort of think, what the hell am I doing alongside all of them? “It’s a great honour and it’s humbling.” Mr Hose first came across wheelchair rugby while he was undergoing rehab. He started training with the Victorian team in 2009 and made the Australian squad the same year. In 2010, the Australian Wheelchair Rugby Team came second at the World Championships, then tasted

gold at the 2012 London Paralympic Games. “I was immediately drawn to the physical nature of the sport,” he said. “It’s hard to put in words (competing at the Paralympics). “I was very lucky to have about 20 of my family and friends over there as well. I was awed to make the whole thing, and to win gold really set it off. It was very humbling. “After the accident, I never would have thought that these sort of things would have been possible. “You just take every day as it comes, and I’m very lucky in my situation - I’m still independent, I’m still mentally active and coherent and that sort of thing, and a lot of people don’t have that, I guess. You’ve got to make the best of a bad situation.” Mr Hose is also a motivational speaker through Independence Australia. Meanwhile, fellow Footscray resident George Munro also received an Order of Australia Medal for services to sport through administrative and coaching roles with basketball and wrestling organisations.

Three strikes and you’re out By CHARLENE MACAULAY THE State Government is set to introduce tough new powers for mayors to remove misbehaving councillors from council meetings. Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell announced that the State Government was drafting legislation that would allow mayors the power to suspend misbehaving councillors. Working on a three strikes and you’re out policy, if a rogue councillor continues to misbehave after being warned twice by the mayor, the mayor can suspend the councillor from the rest of the meeting. “The new legislation will be instrumental in raising the standard of councillor behaviour,” Mrs Powell said. “Council meetings are for important discussion and decision-making and cannot afford to be marred by inappropriate councillor behaviour as has been the case in some municipalities. “In the past some councillors have thought they can get away with unruly, disrespectful and inappropriate behaviour during council meetings - this must stop.” Mrs Powell said councillors must lead by example acting with respect and integrity, in a way that encourages public confidence in the office of councillor. But Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said the new legislation was excessive. The council’s meeting procedure currently allows the mayor to order and cause the removal of any person from the council chamber, including a rogue councillor, “by firstly counselling the parties to take a brief absence from the meeting”. “I think that’s probably enough power for the mayor,” Cr Miles said. “The new powers that the mayor will have for ejecting the councillor for the duration of the meeting - I think it’s going a little bit overboard. “We’ve never, in my experience, even had the need to eject a councillor from a meeting for 15 minutes, let alone a whole meeting, so I can’t see it ever being brought into use in the City of Maribyrnong.”

Cricket? How’s app! By CHARLENE MACAULAY AN INTERACTIVE e-book about cows inventing the game of cricket has won a prestigious international prize. Cowzat, which originally came out as a children’s book by Yarraville author Bruce Atherton, has taken out the Children’s App Category at the 2014 Digital Book Awards held in New York. The Digital Book Awards recognize innovation, creativity and excellence in all aspects of digital book publishing. Mr Atherton was approached by the Australian National Year of Reading and Colour Me Play to transform Cowzat, which was published in 2010, into an e-book that was a cross between a game and a storybook. “They wanted to straddle that boundary between a straight-out e-book, where the pages turn electronically, and having something that was interactive enough that the children could learn at the same time as being entertained,” he said. “It’s engaging in a level that’s not quite gaming.” Mr Atherton was chuffed by the win.

“It was a real shoestring budget, and we were up against some major publishers, like Random House and Scholastic and Penguin. “It was a real thrill and a real feather in the cap to be able to pull it off - and a genuine team effort. “It’s definitely (interactive books) a growing market, but publishers are still figuring out how to make it work. It’s still very much early days.” Mr Atherton, who is a media and public relations consultant, published his first book The Billycart Ride after spending 12 years perfecting his manuscript. He has since published Tough Ol’ Teddy, The Pumpkin Eater, and of course, Cowzat. “I’ve always had a proclivity for writing, and I’ve always enjoyed story telling. “I really enjoy rhyme; there’s something about rhyme that grabs me and takes the story in twists and turns you never would have imagined. “You need to be careful that you’re not contriving the rhyme, but at the same time you’ll find it will take you to places that you didn’t think you’d go because that particular word fits.”

Who will be queen? By CHARLENE MACAULAY A BEAUTY pageant with a difference is coming to Yarraville. The Miss Gay and Miss Transsexual Australia 2014 Pageant is on this Saturday, and more than 20 beauty queens are flying in from all over Australia to strut their stuff at the Yarraville Club. The Miss Universe-style competition features a swimsuit section, a talent show, evening gowns, fantasy costume and question and answer section for the finalists. The pageant is just one of the events taking place in the City of Maribyrnong

as part of the Midsumma Festival, which celebrates queer culture across Melbourne. Pageant organiser Gayzha Davao started the event five years ago and said the pageant was a way for contestants and the audience to learn more about and embrace the differences between lesbians, gays, transsexuals and crossdressers. Ms Gayzha, who is a stage drag queen that considers herself transgender, said contestants also use the opportunity to talk to each other about gender reassignment surgery and other issues they encounter during the transitioning process.

“It’s very important (to have events like these),” she said. “Five years ago, when we first started this, even the transsexuals themselves didn’t like being called transsexual, but I’ve noticed now that so many girls are accepting of who they are as transsexuals. “That’s an achievement that we’re proud of.” The Miss Gay and Miss Transsexual Australia 2014 Pageant will be held on 1 February from 7pm at the Yarraville Club. Cause for hope By CHARLENE MACAULAY MORE than 200 people are expected to run, walk and jog around Maribyrnong’s Coulson Gardens in March in the name of breast cancer awareness. The annual Run For Hope event includes a 4.25km course and a 8.5km course for those wanting to test their mettle that bit more. The event, which is in its third year, is organised by Yarraville cancer survivor and Pink Hope ambassador Sarah Powell. Ms Powell was only 29 and had no family history when she discovered a small lump on her breast. At the time, Ms Powell under-

went a lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiation through Footscray’s Western Private Hospital and the Mercy Private in East Melbourne. Then, weeks after finishing her treatment, she fell pregnant with her first child and decided to undergo genetic testing. Through this, Ms Powell discovered she had the BRCA 1 gene mutation - giving her an increased chance of getting breast cancer again - so in 2010 she underwent an elective double mastectomy and reconstruction. Now the mother of two helps other newly diagnosed women and raises money through the Pink Hope Foundation.

“The last two years it was a very grassroots event, friends getting together, but this year we got funding from Maribyrnong City Council and it’s a lot more professional,” Ms Powell said. Mother of necessity bears Bundle By CHARLENE MACAULAY AT EIGHT months pregnant, Yarraville resident Sarah Cole was busy juggling work and feeling overwhelmed at how much she had to organise before her bundle of joy was born. One of the biggest bugbears for the business woman and opera singer was finding the time to pack the perfect maternity bag for her labour and hospital stay. So, when her friend was expecting two years later, Ms Cole pulled together a gift bag full of all of the bits and pieces she knew her friend needed for

The 15-year-old had already studied ballet, however he trained far more rigorously for two years, after deciding he would like to audition in 2010. His ballet teacher and Artz Collective principal Ziggy Clements said the teaching staff at the Artz Collective discussed Jesse’s desire, but wanted him to wait for a Year 8 audition. And since VCASS only auditions students in Year 5 (for a Year 7 entry) and Year 8 for a Year 9 entry, the Arts Collective devised a plan for Jesse to stick to and to even out his technique, so he could be in the best shape possible in October when auditions were held nationally. Jesse’s parents are incredibly supportive of him, however they admitted they knew absolutely nothing about the world of dance, other than what they had gleaned over the past couple of years being around Artz Collective. However, they definitely wanted the guidance of Artz Collective to assist Jesse as much as they could, Ms Clements said. Jesse and his parents embraced the plan wholeheartedly

towards auditioning for VCASS as well, now that she has seen Jesse succeed. He has inspired her, and she just loves dancing.” “We are so lucky to have Ms Joanne Adderley, former head of the National Ballet School on our teaching team, as it means a lot with our professional experience in the worlds of ballet and dance companies and national musical theatre productions. Butler’s big break THE Footscray Cycling Club raced at Altona’s Drake Boulevard on Australia Day, with riders enjoying sunny skies and a moderate NorthEasterly breeze. The A Grade race saw 21-year-old Bikebug.com rider James Butler use his trademark diesel engine to pull away from the rest to take the win. Gisborne resident Butler is a regular visitor to Footscray CC races, and said he enjoyed the club’s style of racing. “Today’s race was typical FCC, the mentality of the guys is great,” he said. “They seem to be able to ride on the threshold for the whole race, so it started out with a couple of guys going up the road early on, and we chased for ages to bring them back and straight away a group of five guys went, and the chase was back on again. “With three laps to go, I managed to bridge across to the leaders. No one was having a sit, everyone

was doing it tough. It was every man for himself for a lap as we all attacked, and I managed to get clear with three-quarters of a lap to go, so I was pretty happy.” Butler is known for his long breakaways, something he attributed to playing to his strengths. “I’m not one of the best sprinters in the bunch, so preferably I don’t want to leave the result to a sprint,” he said. “That leaves me with the solo breakaway.” Butler is planning to try his luck in Italy or Belgium this year, coming off a successful 2013 with Team Target Trek. He was followed in on Sunday by a fast-finishing Ross Mueller in second who just held off Brett Hickford in third. In other results on the day, Anthony Molinia was too good in B Grade while Colin Morris was victorious in C Grade

Eagles hunt for third win By LIAM TWOMEY YARRAVILLE will need to contain Noble Park to less than 181 if it is to claim its third win in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association. The Eagles won the toss and elected to bat when the two teams met for day one of their clash on Saturday. Thanks to some hard work from its top order, Yarraville moved to 1/73 and looked in the box seat in the early stages. However, a middle order collapse soon halted the Eagles’ progress.

Inverarity, Cricket Australia’s national selector, was calling to tell the 20-year-old he was part of 14-man Australian Twenty20 International squad taking on England throughout the coming week. “I was with my dad about to leave home to go out for dinner, and at 7.30pm I got the call from John, and he said, ‘I’m in the squad for the first T20 game against England,’ so I’m as shocked as anything,” Muirhead said. “(I was) definitely not (expecting it), considering I’ve only played four domestic Twenty20 games and only two first class games. “So to play international cricket at the age of 20 - I was not expecting it, but I feel that I’m up for it. So I just can’t wait to hopefully get a crack.” Muirhead made his Sheffield

Shield debut for Victoria last summer, and has since emerged as one of the most promising spinners in the country after impressing for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. Putting the bite back in the Bulldogs LIAM TWOMEY THIS time last year, there wasn’t much to celebrate for Footscray Edgewater. The Bulldogs were out of the Victorian Premier Cricket finals race and finished the season a disappointing 12th on the ladder. But if a week is a long time in sport, what can happen in the space of 12 months is staggering. Following its smashing of Melbourne Uni last week, Footscray is on top of the Premier Cricket table and is a genuine premiership contender. The club has gone toe-to-toe with the cream of the crop and walked away with the chocolates on 12 of 14 occasions. But according to the man in charge, Footscray Edgewater chairman Geoff Collinson, the job isn’t over yet. Collinson has been rapt with his side’s turnaround in form which coincided with master coach Steven Chapman joining the club in the off-season. Chapman previously coached Premier Cricket rival Dandenong to a premiership and he has wasted no time working similar magic at Farnsworth Avenue. Footscray is now setting its sights on making an impact at the business end of the season. “At the start of the season we thought we would have a team capable of playing finals,” Collinson said. “Now with the way the team has come together and

Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI the recruitment of a couple of players, we have probably got a team that is capable of playing at the pointy end of the season. “Steven (Chapman) has had a terrific impact on the playing group and the club as a whole. His knowledge of cricket is incredibly deep and his experience of being an ex-county player and having been a successful coach both here and overseas is fantastic.” Leading the charge on field and instilling fear into batsmen everywhere has been Bulldogs’ opening bowler Jake Haberfield. The gun quick joined Footscray from South Australia in what has proved to be a recruiting masterstroke. Haberfield has taken 36 wickets at an average of 15.50 and has batsmen throughout the competition wondering if there is anything worse than seeing the tear-away quick steaming in.

But they need wonder no more with Haberfield likely to be sharing the new ball with worldclass speedster John Hastings for finals. “Having a look at the fixture, if we can get through the quarterfinals stage it looks like we may get John Hastings back,” Collinson said. “He is obviously a great bowler, having played for Australia last season but at our level of cricket he is a genuine number four batsman as well. “When you’ve got John Hastings and Jake Haberfield opening the bowling, it is going to send a few shivers through a lot of opposition batsmen.” While the playing list continues to develop at a rate of knots, Footscray believe many of its stars are ready to make an impact on the game at the next level.

Haberfield has been selected for the Victorian Sheffield Shield side during the season and is contracted to the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League. His team-mates, Dean Russ and Dylan Kight, have been regulars in the Bushrangers’ second XI and Guy Walker will represent Australia at under-19 level next month. With the stage set for an exciting end to the 2013/14 season for Footscray, the club is also keeping a close eye on the future to ensure its stay at the top end of the ladder is a long one. Last year Footscray launched its Bulldogs Academy, which is designed to develop all the best cricketing talent throughout Melbourne’s Western Suburbs. “It (the Bulldogs Academy) is really unique. We are the only club in Australia to do it,” Collinson said. “First and foremost, we see that we have a community responsibility to develop cricket in the area. “Obviously we are going to be a beneficiary of that with the half a dozen elite kids coming through the club. “We have also got a responsibility to all the subDistrict clubs and all the local clubs to try and make their players better and make the competition better so it becomes just as strong as anything in Melbourne.”
