ished by 2016. The works will also be done in stages to minimise the disruption to users for the centre. Mr Delahunty said once it was opened, Wyndham could expect to host more State level events at the centre. “Local sports clubs, right up to elite state squads will soon have the perfect venue to train, build on sport development programs and stage the big events,” he said. Wyndham ratepayers footed the majority of the bill for the redevelopment, with Wyndham Council contributing $37 million, the Federal Government contributing $9 million and the State Government kicking in $650,000. • Cos ei De tures • Flexi le De tures • De tures NO DENTIST REFERRALS NEEDED • 1hr Express Repairs • Mouthguards • Repairs Reli e • Metal Fra e Plates NO WAITING LIST • Sot Li ers DIRECT TO THE PUBLIC

WORK has finally begun on the $47.2 million redevelopment of the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre. After a decade of speculation and debate over the proposed expansion of the centre, which was opened in 1977 and has been over its capacity for years, the first phase of construction was officially launched last Thursday. The Victorian Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hugh Delahunty, and Member for Lalor, Joanne Ryan, launched the redevelopment with Wyndham Mayor Bob Fairclough. Mr Delahunty said it was not good enough that members of the community had been forced to join waiting lists because the centre was so far over capacity. “With more and more people making the move to outer suburbs like Werribee, these new works will ensure this vital local infrastructure keeps up to speed with the increasing sport and recreation needs of this expanding community,” Mr Delahunty said. The project, which is being undertaken by WATPAC Construction Vic, will expand the six indoor courts to 12, including a new show court with seating for up to 1500 people, four outdoor netball courts, a dedicated table tennis space, health club, function rooms and a creche. But the new development will see the scrapping of the current tennis courts. “It’s incredible to think that they’re spending more than $47 million on the new rec centre and not one tennis court will be built,” one resident told Star. Wyndham CEO Kerry Thompson said: “Given the scale of the works and the low patronage of the current tennis facilities, there is no provision for tennis courts... “Wyndham City has constructed nine new tennis courts at Wootten Road Reserve, three more than the facility it replaced at Mossfiel Reserve, including three lit courts which are available free for community use. There are a further eight courts at Saltwater Reserve, two of which are also available

WYNDHAM residents have been promised a 24 hour public transport system on weekends if Labor wins this year’s State election. Member for Altona and the Shadow Minister for Public Transport, Jill Hennessy, said trains would run on the Werribee Line, stopping at Seaholme, Altona, Westona, Laverton, Aircraft, Williams Landing and Hoppers Crossing stations. “Under Labor, residents in Seaholme, Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton, Seabrook, Williams Landing, Truganina and Point Cook will have transport options that have never before been available to them,” Ms Hennessy said.

Thumbs up for Australia Day LAST Sunday 5000-6000 people made the journey to the Vic Uni Athletic track for the City of Wyndham Australia Day and 150th year celebrations. The weather was perfect, the venue perfect and the day was a pleasure to be involved in. I was the MC and the crowd loved the entertainment which included the Werribee Concert Band, a very good covers band ‘Action Sam’ through to an acoustic trio - Lanita, Cassandra and Michael - and a performance from the Werribee Youth Centre. Local Jacqui Gordon did a fine version of the National Anthem and the fireworks were a fitting finale to the program. I have to say the alcohol-free event was very family friendly with lots of children in attendance and the mood of the crowd was very happy. Well done to the council staff that put the day together. It was a very well received community event.
I feel sorry for the traders at Werribee Plaza at the moment. The very important works that are going on and have been for a few months has made visiting there a nightmare for shoppers. I have kept my visits to a minimum. Last week when I went to my hairdresser Linea, it was my first visit for several weeks. While the works seem to be progressing very quickly (unlike what I am seeing driving past the Cultural Centre) it must be affecting the businesses. Progress is required, I just hope the small business operators can survive to enjoy the future there.

IT was good to get some positive feedback on social media regarding my comments last week that we should be talking up our city and the fine things we have on our doorsteps. Another magazine during the week highlighted the entire Mansion Precinct as a gem and well worth people from all across Melbourne taking the time to visit. Another angle from a few readers was the change to the City of Wyndham rather than Werribee. I have stated before Werribee does have a stigma - not an opinion, that is a fact. While I am no great fan of the name Wyndham, to be honest, I still think it is better than Werribee, especially for business.

Cook. That’s good for our economy, workers and our nightlife,” she said. If Labor is elected they will conduct a $50 million, 12 month trial of all night Friday and Saturday public transport and according to Ms Hennessy, the new system would be up and running by New Year’s Eve 2015. But Victorian Treasurer Michael O’Brien said the government’s own estimations had shown that the plan would be expected to cause public transport fares to increase by 22 per cent. Mr O’Brien said the cost of Labor’s election promise would be $102.2 million, more than double the announced cost.

“The new Homesafe Trains will mean workers in Melbourne’s West who work in the city will have the added options to get home on Friday’s and Saturday’s. “Residents in Melbourne’s West who have an evening out in the city face a situation where they are either running for the last train, waiting hours for the first one, or trying to find a cab, it’s not good enough.” Ms Hennessy said Melbourne was a world-class 24hour city that needed a public transport system to match. “Under Labor, getting home will be safer, easier and cheaper for residents living in Seaholme, Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton, Seabrook, Williams Landing, Truganina and Point

Ambulance stoush heats up By XAVIER SMERDON A MAN who was involved in a life threatening motorcycle crash in Hoppers Crossing earlier this month was attended to by only one paramedic because no ambulances were available, according to the paramedics union. On Thursday 16 January at around 10.30 am the man and his bike collided with a car on Sayers Rd. According to United Voice, the paramedics union, he had a compound fracture to his femur. He had also lost a significant
amount of skin from his face. A union spokesperson told Star no ambulances were available while Melbourne was being gripped by a heatwave so a lone paramedic was sent from Tarneit to assess the situation. When the paramedic arrived the man had a heart rate of 120 beats per minute and he was slipping in and out of consciousness. An ambulance crew was apparently then created on the spot, consisting of people from a range of different departments of Ambulance Victoria.
Victorian Secretary of the union, Steve McGhie, said Health Minister David Davis was to answer for the poor ambulance services in Wyndham. “Even during relatively quiet times, Victoria’s ambulance service is woefully inadequate. However last week the system went into meltdown,” Mr McGhie said. “Yet instead of addressing this crisis, Premier Napthine and Minister Davis are spending enormous of amounts of taxpayer money trying to con the public into thinking that everything’s
just fine and dandy.” A spokesperson for the Victorian Government told Star that the claims by the union were simply part of a “grubby campaign for a money grab”. “In the face of the facts the union’s claims are plain rubbish and rather than trashing the exceptional response of our hard-working paramedics they should be joining me in thanking and commending Ambulance Victoria and all emergency service providers for their dedication and diligence in these extraordinary and challenging circum-
stances,” the spokesperson said. “As part of the Coalition Government’s $151 million investment in ambulance services a new peak period unit (Tarneit) commenced in Werribee in April 2013, with another new peak period unit (Wyndham Vale) to commence in the first quarter of 2014-15. The Hoppers Crossing service was also upgraded (from a peak period unit) to rostered 24 hour service in April 2012. In total, an additional 18 paramedics are set to service the Wyndham Vale/ Werribee area.”

Phillip will represent Australia in Sport Stacking in South Korea this year. 113304

Phillip’s a world class stacking champion By XAVIER SMERDON A WYNDHAM Vale youngster is getting ready to take on the world in a very unique sport. Twelve year-old Phillip Ager recently qualified for the World Sport Stacking Championships and in April he will travel to South Korea with his parents in a bid to bring home a medal for his country. Sport Stacking is a sport that was created in California in the 80s and involves creating different sized pyramids out of specially designed plastic cups and then unstacking
them in the fastest time possible. Phillip only got involved in the sport two years ago and since then he has ascended all the way to the national team, the Stackaroos. “It took me about six months to get the hang of it,” Phillip said. “In the beginning I liked seeing how fast people could do it and then I thought maybe I could do it faster than them.” What makes Phillip’s achievements even more amazing is the fact that he has autism. The Stackaroo’s coach, Ty Hal-
lam, told Star he expected Phillip’s relay team to pick up a medal at the world championships, but they would have to watch out for the dominating forces of the USA and Germany. Mr Hallam said Phillip was an inspiration to other Sport Stackers. “That’s the beauty of this sport, his autism doesn’t affect how he performs and he has been picked on merit,” Mr Hallam said. “When he first started he was very raw but he’s raised his level considerably.
“His autism is a secondary thing for him.” The Manor Lakes P-12 student said he was excited when he found out he would be representing Australia. “I was like, ‘oh I’m going to be famous’,” he said. “I practice every day. I like the hand actions and the fact that you have to use your hands, eyes and mind.” For more information on Sport Stacking visit www.speedstacks. com.au
THE war of words between a group of Wyndham residents and the Wyndham Council continues to escalate, with residents accusing the council of circulating a “misleading” letter. Members of the Western Region Environment Centre (WREC) are fighting the council over the height of Wyndham’s rubbish tip. On Monday 23 December last year they presented the council with a petition signed by over 2000 people opposing the above-ground construction of the tip. Last week the WREC accused the council of making false claims in its written response to the petitioners. Harry van Moorst from the WREC said the council had falsely claimed that the tip had been above ground for most of its existence, that the landfill is one of only four in Melbourne and that environmental issues were considered in detail as part of the applications to increase the height of the tip. “This response to the petitioners is rather insulting in its dishonest and misleading claims as well as failing to respond to the actual issues raised by the petition,” Mr van Moorst said. But Wyndham Council CEO, Kerry Thompson, said there were concerns about the legitimacy of the petition. “The purpose of the letter to petition signatories was to communicate directly with those who are concerned about the Wests Rd Refuse Disposal Facility,” Ms Thompson said. “Since making contact with signatories to the petition, it was concerning that someone took the time to call council and deny having signed the petition. “In his capacity as a representative of WREC, Harry van Moorst has been appointed a member of the RDF Community Advisory Group. The role of this group is to provide feedback regarding the operation of the RDF and we are happy to address Mr. van Moorst’s difference of opinion in that forum. “One issue that can be discussed for example is the denial that the RDF has operated as an above ground facility for most of its existence. Council has documentation demonstrating this that we are happy to provide to the Reference Group.” Ms Thompson said the matter was before VCAT and concerns around issues like odour should be directed to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Zoo’s new hippo is a Pansy WERRIBEE Open Range Zoo’s newest high profile addition has finally been given a name - Pansy. Lady Primrose Potter, a trustee of the Ian Potter Foundation and a decorated philanthropist, named the zoo’s new baby hippo when she visited last Wednesday.
The two-month-old hippo calf and her mum Brindabella have been in the spotlight since the baby was introduced to the public. The new name is in keeping with the floral theme of the hippo group, which includes Primrose, Tulip and Lotus.

Rare bandicoot to go on show By XAVIER SMERDON THIS summer visitors to the Werribee Open Range Zoo were given a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with an animal that is now extinct in the wild. The Eastern Barred Bandicoot, a small marsupial that is native to Australia and was once considered common, has since been declared officially extinct in the wild in mainland Australia. Only 150 of the cute little creatures are thought to still be alive in zoos and predator-
proof release sites. Werribee Zoo will showcase the Bandicoots as part of its new Keeper Talk segments, in which visitors met the people who care for the dwindling animals. General Manager of Life Sciences Russel Traher said that the Keeper Talk was an exciting first for the zoo. “It’s a great way for kids to learn more about one of our most vulnerable native species and to chat to Keepers about their job,” Mr Traher said.
The talks will take place in the Zoo’s Australian Journey exhibit, an immersive exhibit on the banks of the Werribee River that is also home to kangaroos, emu, brolga and a range of birdlife. The experience was so successful for the zoo that during the next few months, Australian Journey will be further developed to include an open air aviary for the critically endangered Orangebellied Parrot, a Koala exhibit and a nocturnal house where all visitors will be able to see an Eastern Barred Bandicoot.
Zoos Victoria is part of a breeding and recovery program for the Eastern Barred Bandicoot together with a number of organisations including the Department of Environment and Primary Industries. The aim of this program is to re-introduce the Eastern Barred Bandicoot back to predator-proof sites, including Mt Rothwell, Hamilton Community Parklands, Woodlands Historic Park and Werribee Open Range Zoo. Lift for a healthier life WYNDHAM residents who have, or are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, a chronic health condition or osteoporosis are being invited to take part in Lift for Life. Supported by Victoria University and Wyndham Council, the program starts on Monday 10 February, with classes held at Victoria University’s Werribee campus every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Councillor Marie Brittan said the Lift for Life resistance training program was improving people’s health and wellbe-
ing, and it was a comfortable way to exercise. “Experienced trainers guide you through each session at your own pace, offering individual advice and support, so it’s a perfect way to start on the path to fitness,” Cr Brittan said. “Lift for Life is ideal for people working towards better diabetes control, increased muscle strength and tone, gaining a healthier weight, stronger bones, improved flexibility, balance and posture or improved mood and increased energy.”
“It’s about improving quality of life and enabling people to enjoy the things they used to do, and even simple things, like doing the gardening or going shopping, may become much easier.” Classes are held in groups of up to 12 people over a six month period comprising three eight-week phases. Anyone interested in taking part is encouraged to speak with their doctor before starting the program. For more details call 9742 0777 or email healthycommunities@wyndham.vic.gov.au

Kids worse off By XAVIER SMERDON THE lives of Wyndham’s most disadvantaged children could become even harder if the Federal Government scraps vital family bonuses, a Wyndham Vale school principal has said. Moira Findlay does not shy away from the fact many of the students that study at her school are from underprivileged backgrounds. “More than 50 per cent of our parents have health care cards,” Ms Findlay told Star. “We do have a high level of disadvantage, significantly higher than other schools in the area.” But the Iramoo Primary School Principle said these facts should not stop her students from receiving the best education possible.
“Just because they are disadvantaged doesn’t mean these kids don’t deserve the best education possible. Quite the opposite in fact,” she said. “I have a very strong view that the kids need to leave their disadvantage at the front gate.” But with the Abbott Government introducing legislation to scrap the SchoolKids Bonus, a twice annual payment of up $410 for primary school students and $820 for secondary school children, Member for Lalor and former school principle, Joanne Ryan, said up to 22,000 local students could be worse off. “As a former teacher and principal, I know how important this money is to local families to cover the costs of books, uniforms and excursions,” Ms
Ryan said. “If Tony Abbott’s legislation passes the Senate, the January SkoolKids bonus will be their last, meaning every one of these local families will be worse off.” Ms Findlay said that most of the families of the students that attend her public school could not afford to lose the bonus. “We even schedule our school camps around when we know the families will be receiving their SchoolKids Bonus,” she said. “This is about children who are vulnerable and it would be terrible to disadvantage them further.” Star contacted the Federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne for comment but he did not respond before deadline.

Ben’s in tune with dream By XAVIER SMERDON AT JUST 18 years of age, Wyndham Vale’s Ben Peska not only knows exactly what he wants to do for the rest of his life, but he is well on the way to making it happen. Last year Ben graduated from Bacchus Marsh Grammar and after years of practice and a gruelling test, he was accepted into Melbourne University’s exclusive Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. His cello playing skills were good enough to impress the two experts that he had to audition in front of and Ben was offered a platform from which to launch his career. “I was pretty over the moon, especially because it was such a high stakes thing,” Ben said. While most people his age would struggle to list a song made in the 1980s, Ben said he loves listening to and performing anything from the 1800s. Ben’s parents originally did not want him to pursue a career in music due to its competitive nature, but they soon changed chords when they realised how determined he was. “I went to a classical music concert at the beginning of last year and that really opened my eyes to what I could be doing,” he said. “Since then I’ve been doing two to three hours of practice a day.” Ben overcame his fear of public performance to nail his audition and he said he now wants to perform his favourite instrument in whatever capacity he can. “I just want to perform professionally. As a soloist would be great,” he said. Ben Peska has been accepted into the Melbourne “As long as I’m playing the cel- Conservatorium of Music for cello. 113201 lo I think I’ll be happy.” Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI

Alex Miller is fighting bravely against a brain tumour. 109410 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI
Raising funds for an angel By XAVIER SMERDON THE family of a gravely ill little girl said they have been touched by the way the Wyndham community has come together to support them. Four-year-old Alexandra Miller was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an extremely rare tumour located in the middle of the brain stem. The tumour only affects children and is incurable, with Alex initially only expected to live for up to two more years. To make her family’s pain even worse, Alex’s father Andrew was forced to quit his interstate job so he could spend as much time as possible with
his daughter. Next month her extended family will be holding a fundraising event to raise money for medical and associated expenses. The day will be held at the Altona Lacrosse Club in Altona North and it will include a range of activities including a sausage sizzle, an animal farm, rides and face painting. Andrew Miller said Alex had completed her intensive course of radiation and would be starting school this week. “She’s been doing really well. We had an MRI scan last week and we’re just waiting on the results,” Mr Miller said. “We’re really glad that the radiation is finished because she just hated that. To see her go
through that rips your heart out. “She’s had all the treatment she can have and now it’s just a waiting game.” Mr Miller said the community had shown his family more support than he ever expected. “It’s unbelievable. It’s very humbling,” he said. “You kind of feel like an Aussie battler and you don’t want to ask for help but everyone has just come together and we don’t know what to say. “It’s overwhelming at times.” Alex’s fundraising day will be held on Sunday 9 February from 10am to 4pm at the Altona Lacrosse Club, 53-65 Mills St Altona North.

New horse show in the saddle HORSE lovers will be spoiled for choice this year with the announcement that yet another equestrian competition will be added to the event calendar. Equestrian Victoria announced last week that it would be teaming up with private company Nodding Horse to bring the 57-yearold Melbourne International Horse Trials to Werribee Park for the Queen’s Birthday weekend. A pool prize of more than $50,000 will up for grabs by riders taking part in the competition. Event director Michael Hands, a veteran of major
international sporting events, said he hoped the Melbourne International Horse Trials would be Victoria’s premier sporting and social event on the Queen’s Birthday weekend. “We aim to build on what has become a spectacular long weekend of entertainment at the idyllic Werribee Park precinct,” Mr Hands said. “The 2014 MIHT will be a true showcase of Australian equestrian talent in preparation for the 2014 World Equestrian Games and the 2016 Rio Olympics.” Three-time Olympian, international judge and EV
chairman Barry Roycroft said the event marked a new chapter for Australia’s eventing scene and would strengthen the country’s position as a leader in equestrian sports. “As a long-time participant, I am excited by the opportunities the partnership will bring to the Melbourne International Horse Trials and the wider equestrian community,” Mr Roycroft said. The MIHT will be held at Werribee Park from 6 to 8 June. For more information visit www.miht.com.au.

WYNDHAM residents are being reminded to drive safely around school zones as most of the municipality’s students go back to school this week. School speed zones will be back in force from today and speed limits will be reduced to 40 kilometres an hour between 8 and 9.30am and 2.30 to 4pm. Wyndham Councillor and former police officer, Peter Gibbons, said children could behave unpredictably around roads. “Drivers also need to pay attention to parking restriction signs including bus stops, disabled parking and No Standing signs,” Cr Gibbons said. “As drivers it’s our responsibility to help keep our children safe by obeying the school speed zones. “School crossing supervisors will also be back, assisting young people at intersections. We have 89 school crossing supervisors working every school day in Wyndham and they do a wonderful job.”

WESTERN suburbs residents will be given the chance to brush up on their legal rights next month when a constitutional law group holds information sessions in the West for the first time ever. The Community Law Resources Association was founded 10 years ago in Melbourne’s east, with the goal of educating people about the constitution. From February the group will be holding monthly community meetings in Truganina. President of the group, Kelvin Granger, said it was a good chance for people to learn about the constitution. “The constitution is hardly known about or understood by people in Australia,” Mr Granger said. “If people actually read and understood it they would be astounded.” Mr Granger said CLRA meetings held in Burwood were regularly being attended by people from Melbourne’s West, sparking the new meeting location of Truganina. “There’s a huge need out here to expand the people’s knowledge of constitutional law,” he said. “We receive a lot of inquiries from people in this area, especially about local government. “Local government is a huge issue because the rates they are charging are just ridiculous.” Mr Granger first joined the CLRA five years ago after attending a meeting and he can now recite every verse and chapter of the constitution.

ARTZ Collective student Jesse Matthews, from Newport, has gained entry into Victoria’s prestigious performing arts college, VCASS (Victorian College of the Arts Secondary College) for Year 9, in classical dance - and he’s naturally jumping for joy. The 15-year-old had already studied ballet, however he trained far more rigorously for two years, after deciding he would like to audition in 2010. His ballet teacher and Artz Collective principal Ziggy Clements said the teaching staff at the Artz Collective discussed Jesse’s desire, but wanted him to wait for a Year 8 audition. And since VCASS only auditions students in Year 5 (for a Year 7 entry) and Year 8 for a Year 9 entry, the Arts Collective devised a plan for Jesse to stick to and to even out his technique, so he could be in the best shape possible in October when auditions were held nationally. Jesse’s parents are incredibly supportive of him, however they admitted they knew absolutely nothing about the world of dance, other than what they had gleaned over the past couple of years being around Artz Collective. However, they definitely wanted the guidance of Artz Collective to assist Jesse as much as they could, Ms Clements said. Jesse and his parents embraced the plan wholeheartedly
Artz Collective celebrates the sucess of its pupils in style. and the proof is in the pudding! Staff and family are thrilled to see Jesse’s success, and cannot wait to see how he develops at VCASS with the wonderful teaching staff there. The second student to win accolades this year is young Jessica Trang, from Footscray, who at the tender age of eight years old has won a scholarship from Western Chances, although she is five years outside of their usual age range. Jessica is a classical ballet, singing and jazz dance student with two years of honours results under her belt. Ms Clements said: “She is a student with a huge future, her potential is just stunning for her age. Jessica would like to work
towards auditioning for VCASS as well, now that she has seen Jesse succeed. He has inspired her, and she just loves dancing.” “We are so lucky to have Ms Joanne Adderley, former head of the National Ballet School on our teaching team, as it means a lot with our professional experience in the worlds of ballet and dance companies and national musical theatre productions. We do feel we can foster and mentor students who want to take their dance, singing or acting on to the next level, like Jesse or Jessica,” she said. Artz Collective is at Unit 2, 59-61 Hudsons Rd, Spotswood. Contact 9939 6320 or visit www.artzcollective.com.au for more information.

FIRST Steps and Stepnout Performing Arts Studio is in its 17th year and still growing strong. It is a full-time studio that runs classes six days and nights a week. The junior school is First Steps preschool music and movement, and we have classes from 18 months to four years while the senior school is Stepnout Performing Arts, and has classes from four years to adults. Situated at Factory 10, 61-65 Russell Street, there are two beautiful, professional, air conditioned and heated studio rooms with barres and mirrors. There is also a large TV to enable parents to watch their child from our waiting area. Staff and teachers believe in having a great time and building self confidence in all our children. The aim is to ensure they are enjoying themselves, the children learn at a greater pace and want to learn more and achieve greater things.

Putting the bite back in the Bulldogs LIAM TWOMEY THIS time last year, there wasn’t much to celebrate for Footscray Edgewater. The Bulldogs were out of the Victorian Premier Cricket finals race and finished the season a disappointing 12th on the ladder. But if a week is a long time in sport, what can happen in the space of 12 months is staggering. Following its smashing of Melbourne Uni last week, Footscray is on top of the Premier Cricket table and is a genuine premiership contender. The club has gone toe-to-toe with the cream of the crop and walked away with the chocolates on 12 of 14 occasions. But according to the man in charge, Footscray Edgewater chairman Geoff Collinson, the job isn’t over yet. Collinson has been rapt with his side’s turnaround in form which coincided with master coach Steven Chapman joining the club in the off-season. Chapman previously coached Premier Cricket rival Dandenong to a premiership and he has wasted no time working similar magic at Farnsworth Avenue. Footscray is now setting its sights on making an impact at the business end of the season. “At the start of the season we thought we would have a team capable of playing finals,” Collinson said. “Now with the way the team has come together and
Footscray Edgewater coach Steven Chapman speaking to Dylan Kight and Hamish Winter-Irving earlier in the season. 107204. Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI the recruitment of a couple of players, we have probably got a team that is capable of playing at the pointy end of the season. “Steven (Chapman) has had a terrific impact on the playing group and the club as a whole. His knowledge of cricket is incredibly deep and his experience of being an ex-county player and having been a successful coach both here and overseas is fantastic.” Leading the charge on field and instilling fear into batsmen everywhere has been Bulldogs’ opening bowler Jake Haberfield. The gun quick joined Footscray from South Australia in what has proved to be a recruiting masterstroke. Haberfield has taken 36 wickets at an average of 15.50 and has batsmen throughout the competition wondering if there is anything worse than seeing the tear-away quick steaming in.
But they need wonder no more with Haberfield likely to be sharing the new ball with worldclass speedster John Hastings for finals. “Having a look at the fixture, if we can get through the quarterfinals stage it looks like we may get John Hastings back,” Collinson said. “He is obviously a great bowler, having played for Australia last season but at our level of cricket he is a genuine number four batsman as well. “When you’ve got John Hastings and Jake Haberfield opening the bowling, it is going to send a few shivers through a lot of opposition batsmen.” While the playing list continues to develop at a rate of knots, Footscray believe many of its stars are ready to make an impact on the game at the next level.
Haberfield has been selected for the Victorian Sheffield Shield side during the season and is contracted to the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League. His team-mates, Dean Russ and Dylan Kight, have been regulars in the Bushrangers’ second XI and Guy Walker will represent Australia at under-19 level next month. With the stage set for an exciting end to the 2013/14 season for Footscray, the club is also keeping a close eye on the future to ensure its stay at the top end of the ladder is a long one. Last year Footscray launched its Bulldogs Academy, which is designed to develop all the best cricketing talent throughout Melbourne’s Western Suburbs. “It (the Bulldogs Academy) is really unique. We are the only club in Australia to do it,” Collinson said. “First and foremost, we see that we have a community responsibility to develop cricket in the area. “Obviously we are going to be a beneficiary of that with the half a dozen elite kids coming through the club. “We have also got a responsibility to all the subDistrict clubs and all the local clubs to try and make their players better and make the competition better so it becomes just as strong as anything in Melbourne.”
John Hastings may return for Footscray Edgewater’s finals assault. 93349. Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI
Geoff Collinson on: The 2012/13 season: “I felt like we should have made the finals last year with the talent that we had in the team. It was very clear to me and the committee and we believed we had a better team than where we finished.” The leadership of Captain Dean Russ: “Dean is a terrific leader in all respects. He is a born and bred Bulldog boy. He captained our Dowling Shield team, his dad is a life-member, ex-president and ex-first XI member. He is Bulldog through and through and his performances as captain have been outstanding.” Bulldogs playing at the next level: “Dean Russ and Dylan Kight, I think are performing at the levels where it is surprising that the Vics haven’t picked them. Guy Walker has just been picked in the Australian under-19s tour, which is the second or third time he has been selected at that level. He has also got a rookie contract with Victoria so they obviously have their eye on him.”

PORT Melbourne Colts Football Club is looking forward to a successful year in the WRFL under new coach Jason Love and will be kicking off the season in style with a ‘Best of the Best Night”. The event is on Saturday 15 March at the St Kilda Town Hall in Carlisle St and will be hosted by SEN’s David Schwarz. It is a formal night and costs $125 per person for beer, wine, soft drinks and a three-course meal. The highlight of the night will be the naming of the Colts’ greatest ever side and the teams of the decades. I have been watching Colts close up since working for the WRFL and I can tell you it will be a nightmare picking a team of the 2000’s. Names like Clarke, Lindsay, Jacob, Julier, Hoath, Webb, Massis, Twomey, De Bruyn, Caddy, Winters, Brannan, Cox, Stevens, O’Neill, Braken, Glad I am not on the selection panel. For bookings and more details contact Brad Julier on 0438 601 063. THE Tarneit Titans, the newest club in the WRFL, is holding its family day this Sunday at its new facilities and ovals at Wootten Rd Reserve in Tarneit. You can join some AFL and VFL players who will be there and watch the Titans’ senior team train. For the kids there is jumping castles, face painting and fairy floss.
ing a lot better - because some of them just don’t like that pressure. “We’re just going to relax and play and work hard - so I’m confident we’re going to get these runs.” Hoppers Crossing will resume its chase with Michael Tubb and Ryan Latham at the crease.
The day will go from 10am till 2pm and for more information contact enquiries@tarneittitansfc.com.au It is a tough and time consuming job starting up a club from scratch and I wish them well and anything this columnist can do to help is always there. FORMER Hammerheads president and now world-wide Australian Day Lambassador Sam Kekovich joined me on SEN last weekend for a chat and what a funny and entertaining man he is. Given how busy Sam was with his Australia Day activities he was happy to take my call and have a chat. He is the host of a big Sportsman’s Day this Sunday for the Grand United Cricket Club at Parsons Reserve in Sunshine from 11am. Sam will introduce Barry Hall and Dayne Beams plus tell a few of his own stories. Tickets are $30 at the door with finger food and drinks at bar prices. There will be a raffle and an auction as well. Contact Daniel on 0416 147 725 for any inquiries. GREAT to see Williamstown boy Andrew Whittington make it through to the quarter finals of the Australian Open doubles last week. Andrew is only 20 and his doubles ranking will be inside the top 100 in the world after his performance. Andrew is coached by John Trickey who is director of coaching at Bayside Tennis School in Williamstown. The school still has a few vacancies available for 2014 and it is not too late for students to enrol. Tennis is over and the major cricket competitions are about to end which means it is less than two weeks until the footy is back. HOPPERS Crossing captaincoach Darrel Brown is confident his Cats can beat Turf Cricket contender South Caulfield this weekend. In pristine batting conditions at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday, visiting South Caulfield posted 251 in 75 overs before getting four overs to have a crack at the Hoppers Crossing top order late in the day. In what proved a very hazardous four-over spell, the Cats lost two crucial wickets to end the day’s play at 2/6. However, despite needing another 246 runs for victory with eight wickets in hand when play resumes this Saturday, Brown has plenty of faith his side can get the job done in their do-or-die clash. “The only thing that didn’t go well for us was losing those two wickets but other than that, for us to bowl them out for 250 on the wicket we played on was a great effort,” Brown said. “In the change room the boys are saying we’ll get this for sure, even after we lost the wickets. “We’ll hope we get the same wicket as the one the groundsman prepared today and next week’s going to be hot, so we’re pretty confident we’re going to get this.” The Cats are currently ninth on the Senior Division table and will need to win to stay in finals contention. However Brown has been wary of putting too much pressure on his young group,

A win for all THERE was no shortage of exciting horses and star jockeys on show at the Werribee Racing Club on Sunday for its Australia Day meeting. Punters and racegoers were greeted with an eight-race card on a day dominated by the short priced runners. With Vlad Duric on board, 7-1 chance Red Letter Day crossed the line first in the Werribee Function Centre Two Year Old Maiden Plate to get the day off to a winning start for punters.
The favourites continued to control the track throughout the next few hours with Sweet Clementine (race two), Silk and Diamonds (race three), Silent Man (race four), Avighna (race six) and Saint or Sinner (race seven) all coming in first at short odds. There was finally some respite for the bookies with 20-1 chance Ego’s Better claiming the seventh on the card, the Werribee Racing Club Community Clubs Handicap. The final race saw Reel Way
take out the TAB Showcase Handicap from Billy Esprit and Fire and Flood in second and third respectively. Werribee’s next race meeting will be on Monday 3 March. It will be a busy month for Werribee with the club also hosting its Community Race Day on 13 March and its Charity Race Day on 29 March. Giants lose grip By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Werribee Giants dropped a game they should have won in Division Two Summer League baseball on Saturday. In a 15-inning marathon at Werribee’s Presidents Park, the Giants gave up a four-run lead from the top of the seventh and ended up going down 8-7 to lowly Bonbeach. Werribee coach Phil Balzer admitted afterward his side should not have let the game slip in the fashion it did on Saturday. “It was a bit disappointing,” Balzer said. “Bonbeach had been struggling and when you’re up there among the leaders in your league then it’s expected that you win those sorts of games, or at least put in a pretty good effort, but I thought we were a little bit ordinary. “Against a team that’s near the bottom we want to be playing a better brand of baseball and we just didn’t come through, which was unfortunate.” Werribee blew multiple chances to bunt runners home to win the game late, while Balzer was also left ruing crucial defensive errors in the field when the game was on the line. “That was really disappointing that we had three guys that couldn’t convert a basic bunt opportunity down, and we fumbled the ball in the eighth to let Bonbeach back into the game as well,” Balzer said. “So we look at it as though we lost that game. “They won it because of our failure to make certain plays and get some bunts down and do some of the basic stuff, and we can’t do that in finals. “We won’t stand a chance if we can’t convert
Wes De Jong was the starting pitcher for Werribee against Bonbeach on Saturday. 113419 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI those opportunities.” This Saturday the Giants will travel to Berwick hoping they can bounce back with finals now just a month away. Balzer said third-placed Werribee needs to learn its lesson from Saturday and not take any game for granted from now on. “Berwick have underperformed this year, but they’ll be tough to beat on the road,” he said.
