Albury Wodonga’s largest circulating newspaper

Suprise winner for Gift THE Albury Wodonga Gift presented some surprising results on Sunday, with challenging handicaps, Olympians thrown in the mix and an unlikely winner. Turn to Page 26 OUR VOLUNTEERS – DESERVING AUSTRALIA DAY WINNERS - PAGES 3-6, 10-11

Our great ‘giver’ By KRYSTEN MANUEL MANY Aussie children grow up with memories of their mothers threatening to give away their food to starving children in Africa if they don’t finish their dinner. They are sheltered from the harsh realities of life and often nagged to spend more time with the family. For Tonia Timmermans, the lessons of childhood - to share, be grateful, put family first and so on - were delivered differently. She spent three and a half years in a Japanese concentration camp with her mother, father and six siblings. For eight-year-old Tonia, whether she was eating her crusts or not was not an issue. Whether or not she ate at all that day was. “My father didn’t want to waste anything,” she said. “After the war he would say ‘if you really can’t eat it, give it to the birds’.” Thanks to these experiences, Tonia’s life has been one of great generosity, a generosity that led to her receiving the Albury Citizen of the Year Award on Sunday. “It’s an honour and I definitely didn’t expect it,” she said. “I’m a bit shy about getting the award because I think there’s a lot of people that are a lot more deserving than I am.” Tonia arrived in Albury in 1961 and has influenced the success of many local community organisations including Albury Public and later Albury High School P&C, CAA (Oxfam), and Scouts. She influenced the development of the Regional Art Gallery as a foundation member of Friends of the Gallery. As Murray Conservatorium’s only office person, then later as a member of the Board of Management, Tonia also made a significant contribution to the development of the Conservatorium, in particular bringing high quality overseas and local performers to Albury.

She is a member of the Albury Base Hospital Auxiliary, the Information Bureau and Zonta International. Most significantly, Tonia has been heavily involved in community efforts behind the Fight Cancer Foundation since 2004, helping to raise $5.5m for the construction of the AlburyWodonga Carers Accommodation Centre (Hilltop). Sadly, her attention to the issue arose from her experience of losing her husband Edward to cancer in 2002. “I went to Melboune when my husband had cancer,” she said. “So for four or five days I stayed in a motel every night. It was so lonely with no one to talk to. “Then the Leukeamia Foundation came to me and said ‘where are you staying? If you want to share a hall with other people we have one vacancy.’ “So I shared with people who were in similar circumstances. I would come home at 7 o’clock and talk, share food, that sort of thing. It was so precious to have,” Tonia said. “At Albury’s Carer’s Accommodation, between every 10 rooms there’s what’s called a hub, that way they have contact with people and don’t feel so lonely. I think that’s the best asset of it all.” When asked where her passion for volunteering comes from, Tonia told NewsWeekly a little about her concentration camp experience. “I don’t know where my passion comes from, maybe my parents ... I have been through the war years and I was in a concentration camp - I was young of course,” she said. “There’s a lot of camaraderie, there’s a lot of fights among the women, there’s a lot of crying, maybe that’s had an affect on me, I’m not sure. Vintage makes comeback Beats by the river By KRYSTEN MANUEL

By KRYSTEN MANUEL

WITH the Albury Gold Cup in just two months’ time, GIGS Art Gallery is hosting an exhibition that could solve your accessory woes just in time for fashions on the field. An eclectic array of stylish hats, head pieces and jewellery from local artists will be on display from today until 23 February. Pieces may be bought outright or commissioned to suit your own style. “We’re having an exhibition with three milliners and three jewellers, which is pretty exciting because we don’t often get to exhibit, milliner Delphine Nicholson said. “Everybody does a different style and we’re all our own designers with handmade, one-off pieces. Ms Nicholson has been a milliner for nearly a decade, with enough talent to win her several awards at the Albury Gold Cup and Oaks Day. “When beautiful people wear my hat’s it’s lovely - they make them look good, she said. “They’re art work – not just a hat you put on your head. Joining Ms Nicholson in the exhibition is jeweller Kylie Maguire with her intriguing take on modern jewellery. “My designs are made from wood, Ms Maguire said. “I design them on a graphic design program and have them sent off and laser cut. When I get them back I either seal them or paint them. “I’ve been doing handmade jewellery for nearly three years but I’ve been a graphic designer for 15 years. After my third child I was a bit bored, designing jewellery was my little outlet.

Kylie Maguire and Delphine Nicholson will be entering in GIGS’ newest exhibition. “It’s really rewarding when people enjoy the jewellery and come back for more. Both Ms Nicholson and Ms Maguire believe vintage will be the name of the game this year in the competitive fashions on the field event. “Vintage is coming back in and I think my jewellery compliments that in certain ways, Ms Maguire said. Ms Nicholson said while country fashion rarely matches up with city, vintage is a style that spans across both. The Hat and Jewellery exhibition is on from 29 January to 23 February at GIGS Art Galley, which is open from 10am-4pm. Inquiries: www. gigs.org.au.

LONG lines, expensive tickets, filthy toilets and drunk people stumbling around unfortunately tends to be the status-quo for music festivals these days. One festival, however, has been praised for being the exact opposite – the Echuca Moama Riverboats music festival. Entering its third year, the festival boasts a stunning location, cheap-as-chips tickets, a relaxed, family atmosphere, first class food and a fantastic line-up to boot. “This year has really been an exercise in refining the event and insuring things that have been special about it over the last couple of years don’t change, festival producer David Frazer said. “For us that goes well beyond the line-up. It’s ensuring it remains a boutique festival in terms of size and the personality of the event. We want it to continue being family friendly, inviting and with a big focus on community. One of the main attractions of the event resulting in sold out crowds is the location - somewhat unique and very conducive to a laid-back, informal vibe. “A lot of music festivals seem to concentrate on the capital cities or the coast, Mr Frazer said.

For a vibe like no other music festival ... “We wanted to produce something special that really showcased the more inland Australia – the Murray and the red-gums, all of those elements. “Our venue is one of the most picturesque locations in Australia, it’s really a superb spot at a bend in the Murray, we have paddle-steamers meandering past and a single stage all weekend. “You can roll out your picnic rug, open a bottle of wine and plonk yourself down for the weekend. “We don’t have to bus people 10 kilometres out of town into a paddock and worry about huge lines of cars snaking out hours after the event. It’s an easy event to attend. “People can expect a really lovely, welcoming vibe.

They’re not going to be subjected to horrendous queues and overflowing bathrooms and all the things festivals are notorious for - and they can expect first-class food. The 2014 line-up welcomes The Cat Empire, Tim Finn, Ian Moss, Paul Dempsey, Don Walker, The Basics and more, with Brian Nankervis from Rockwiz featuring as the festival’s first MC. Mr Frazer urges those interested to get in quick for tickets, anticipating another sold out crowd. “We’re already at about 70 per cent capacity, so jump online, he said. Top citizen cares for needy

Breanne Shaw has been recognised for her fund-raising efforts for cancer.

Prestigious award for Breanne TAKING out the prestigious AlburyYoung Citizen of the Year Award was Breanne Shaw. Breanne has become one of the region’s most prominent cancer fund-raisers after surviving her own battle with the deadly disease. The 17-year-old Albury resident was diagnosed with Osteoarcoma in 2010, and since entering remission Breanne has raised thousands of dollars for cancer causes. Breanne’s beneficiaries have included a range of cancer charities, including MakeA-Wish, Ricky Pointing Foundation, she has raised $4000 for the Leukaemia Foundation and a further $6000 for Relay for Life. She represents Country Hope and has been a prominent advocate for raising awareness about children’s cancers.

THIS year’s Wodonga Citizen of the Year Glenn Mackinnon has been actively helping others in the community since he was a teen. The young, old, sick and disabled have all benefited from his kindness and generosity during his past 35 years of community service. The 52-year-old father-of-two has been a strong advocate for people who are less fortunate. His volunteer work has spanned across a range of areas and has been as varied as the Paw Pals program, which assists the elderly care for their pets, to the L2P driver mentor program for disadvantaged youths. Mr Mackinnon said he has always been community-minded and

believes everyone has a role to play in strengthening the community. “I look around Wodonga and see all the changes that are happening, certainly in infrastructure, and all the opportunities for employment and that sort of thing,” he said. “But I think we shouldn’t lose focus on the fact that there are people who are frail and aged, with a disability or mental illness, and we all have an active role in supporting them to participate.” During the past three and half decades Mr Mackinnon had been a long-standing member of Apex and the Rotary Club of Wodonga, and has been a regular driver on the Meals on Wheels roster for more than 30 years.

He has served on boards for the Disability Advocacy and Information Service (DAIS), Catholic College Wodonga and Catholic Education Wodonga, and has organised and participated in a team for Relay for Life for the past three years. “I’ve been volunteering for 30 years and, hopefully, I have another

30 years left in me,” he said. Mr Mackinnon thanked his parents for making him community minded, his family for their support and asked that everyone contribute just one hour a week to not only contribute to the community, but enrich their own lives as well.

Helping hands earn award A GROUP of volunteers which rescues unwanted dogs and cats has been named Wodonga’s Community Organisation for 2014. Wodonga Dog Rescue organisation aims to re-home as many suitable dogs and cats as possible that would have otherwise been put down. It also aims to educate residents about responsible pet ownership and to support new owners. The group is managed and operated by volunteers. Spokeswoman Peta McRae said members all have the love of animals in common.

“Rescuing and re-homing animals can be very rewarding,” she said. “To see puppies come through the system, and old dogs that deserve to live their senior years in comfort and not the last week of their life in the pound, just keeps you doing it.” Meanwhile former Catholic College Wodonga student Samantha Treffers was announced as Young Citizen of the Year earlier this month. Samantha is in India where she is teaching English in schools and involved in building and daycare work.

CELEBRATING 10 years of tireless service, Albury’s St John Ambulance (NSW) volunteer division has provided many thousands of hours at community events offering care and support to the people of Albury. From humble beginnings of six volunteers and working from the boot of their car, the team has now grown to 30 adult and cadet volunteers. Regional superintendent Chris Chant, who was also awarded the Order of Australia Medal on 26 Janurary, said receiving the Albury Community Group of the Year Award represents a recognition of the work of all St John Ambulance volunteers. “The word I would use is ‘awesome’,” he said. “The St John work is essential because we’re first on the scene.” Using advanced medical equipment, the volunteers can be found at most public events caring for the sick and injured. “We’ve been doing Australia Day events since we started, the division itself does in excess of 5000 community hours a year,” Chris said. “In Albury we have a number of people we know whose lives we’ve saved - people who have had sudden cardiac arrests.” But it’s seeing the fruits of the St John Ambulance training that Chris finds touching. “One of our 10-year-old cadets potentially saved his sister’s life after his sister had taken some medication she had found. “Those are the things that make me proud.” Chris said he was “absolutely privileged to receive the Order of Australia Medal this year. “To me it represents a lifetime of volunteering, not only through St John but in Scouting, I’m a volunteer at SES and I’m a past Rotarian. “It represents all the things I’ve done in my life. “I guess I look at it with awe. It’s humbling, at the same time it hasn’t sunk in.”

AFTER a lifetime of volunteering, Alf Armstrong was awarded Albury’s Volunteer of the Year Award. “It’s a recognition for me but also for the service clubs particularly who do all sorts of volunteer work,” he said. “They don’t do it for awards but when they come along that’s nice as well.” Having volunteered for more than 10 years on the

Albury Wodonga Carers Accommodation steering committee, Alf oversaw fundraising projects totalling $3 million. He said this was his greatest achievement. He still sits on the board of management. “Again, that’s been a team effort from a number of service clubs and individuals who all work very hard to achieve that,” he said. Alf is also an inaugural

support of Albury’s Midnight Basketball program and oversees competition. On top of this, Alf also sits on five Albury Districy Rotary Committees and has organised work parties that have delivered housing and water tanks to disadvantaged communities in Tonga and Fiji. Starting his volunteer work early in life, Alf said his passion has simply evolved to what it is today.

“I joined Rotary when I was only 27,” he said. “I didn’t have any particular aim in mind but I became aware from being a Rotarian there were always projects being done here locally and in third world countries. “Over a period of time I got right into those things, I found it satisfying.” Alf intends to continue with his current roles, do some more overseas aid work and “whatever else comes along.”

A SPECIAL Mayoral Award went to the James Fallon High School’s SWAT Team for its work in breaking down barriers of mental health awareness in and around the school. The students are from all year levels and are working towards awareness and reducing the stigma associated with mental health through fund-raising, public speaking and an anti-bullying campaign. “I’m so proud of the kids,” student support officer Laura Skow said. “Nearly 100 per cent of the ideas we have, come from the kids. Having a Special Mayoral Award to recognise what we’re doing, it inspires the kids to do more. “We want other schools to take on the perception that we have - that kids can do something to stop bullying and have mental health awareness and wellbeing.” The SWAT (Student Well-being Achievement Team) began after Ms Skow and the students attended the Youth Mental Health Forum in 2012. They were encouraged to break down the barriers of mental health, raise awareness and begin an anti-bullying campaign. One of the main initiatives to come out of the forum was The String Movement. It was an anti-bullying campaign where when students signed the pledge not to tolerate bullying they got the string. “The huge line is now outside my office and it says ‘stop the bullying’ written in the string,” Ms Skow said. The team has also organised inspirational speakers to come to the school each term, with some having walked the Kokoda Track. “It’s not all about mental health, it’s wellbeing in general and overcoming challenges,” she said.

Tonia shares art of giving From front page “I had to work in there ... most of the good food was left for the patients in the hospital and once I had to bring a plate to a patient and, I’ll never forget, she died right in front of me. “I think I dropped the plate and ran away to get somebody. So I’m not sure what it is really. Maybe it’s that sort of life I’ve had.” Surprisingly, Tonia said her greatest challenge was not dealing with death, but bringing up four children. “I enjoyed doing it, but it was the constant thinking,” she said. “I remember someone said to me one day you always have to be a step ahead of your chil-

Albury’s Citizen of the Year - Tonia Timmermans. dren’. I’ve never forgotten it. “They were four different characters and I think it’s a challenge to help them become steady citizens.” Tonia said her future focus

will continue to be on the Carer’s Accommodation, perhaps setting more up in centres like Benalla and Shepparton, but for Albury she would like to see more support for Midnight Basketball. “I think the young people need an outlet,” she said. “I admire the Midnight Basketball they (Carevan) started and I think that needs to be promoted. “It’s a very good service, the volunteers start at eight o’clock and don’t finish until midnight,” she said. “They feed the youth, they talk to them, and I think if they have more of them it would be fantastic.”

Email: newsdesk@awnw.com.au Even though the abortionist films the front of the clinic, we have never had a single charge against us in all the years we have been offering assistance to women. Allegations of blocking access, obstructing the footpath, and assault are patent lies. Women would not choose to keep their babies as they have done, if we behaved this way. Anna von Marburg, Albury.

Cherish new life KOALA don’t, Kookaburras don’t, cats don’t and no other species of our wildlife destroy their offspring before they’re born. No, they lovingly cherish them. And, the majority of humans cherish their offspring. But, there is a minority of people through ignorance or encouragement, wish to terminate their babies lives. That is why the people stand up against abortion in Englehardt Street to try and educate these minority. But seeing is believing, if the clinic would let them see the little fingers and toes that are bagged and taken away for disposable waste, maybe then they would change their minds, for they know not what they’re doing. PIETER Mourik quoted Pope Francis (Albury Wodonga News weekly 22 January). I too was inspired by the words of the future Pope when he said in Argentina that defending unborn children is a “road that is full of wolves... because what Jesus says is a little chilling: ’if you proclaim my message, they are going to persecute you, they are going to slander you, they are going to set traps to deliver you to the courts and to have you killed. But you must continue forward. For that reason, take care, Jesus says, and be astute, be clever like the serpent but very simple like doves.” As Pope, he writes in Evangelium Gaudium: “Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most defenceless and innocent among us... “Frequently, as a way of ridiculing the Church’s effort to defend their lives, attempts are made to present her position as ideological, obscurantist and conservative. Yet this defence of unborn life is closely linked to the defence of each and every other human right.” Pope Francis asks us to “accompany women in very difficult situations, where abortion appears as a quick solution to their profound anguish...” This is exactly what the Helpers do. They peacefully offer assistance to women.

H20 is the way to go SINCE the inception of H2o Solar Cleaning Pty Ltd last year, the business has boomed and expanded thanks to their unique purified water technique and dedicated customer service. Now, H2o offers not only solar panel cleaning, but evaporative air conditioner, window and pressure cleaning for residential and commercial/ industrial clients. In a bid to achieve total customer satisfaction, H20 will work around the clock and service homes and businesses up to a 150km radius no matter what the job may be. “Literally, no job is too big or too small,” company director Lucas Willaims said. “We can service 500 panels or we can service five – what ever needs doing. “We have scaffolding, we have high reach poles up to 6m long and we have working at heights certificates. “We try to do most things from the ground in order to be as safe as possible.” The company recently purchased a mobile water purifying unit with client satisfaction at the forefront of the idea. “With the new system we can regulate the pressure so we’re not damaging solar panels or windows,” Mr Williams said.

“We can also put soap in with the system, which is great for machinery. “Plus, not using the client’s water opens up the scope of what we can do and where we can do it. “We understand the importance of convenience and we’re willing to work around other businesses to make sure we provide them with the service they need when it suits them.” With the recent heat wave and fires around the Border, it’s no surprise most people have given their air conditioning systems a work out. What may come as a surprise is what could happen if you don’t give your air-con a thorough clean. “Over time if you leave water in the air conditioner it breeds legionnaires and other types of bacteria,” Mr Williams said. “We dump all the old water, check all the connections and exposed wires and clean out pads so air is flowing through properly and you’re cooling the house efficiently. “We also use eucalyptus oil which makes it smell nice but also keeps the spiders away. “If you haven’t done it and you’ve been sick all summer, that’s probably why. If you haven’t had it done and you’ve been running the system it

may be working harder than it needs to and producing more heat, therefore not cooling like it should and costing more to run.” In terms of pressure cleaning, H2o will take on the cleaning of buildings, paths and machinery – farm or industrial. And then there’s everyone’s favourite job – window cleaning. “It’s not a fun job to do, most people find it time consuming and don’t always get the clean they need after hours of work,” Mr Willaims said. “The process we use to do it is environmentally friendly and we don’t leave any streak marks or detergents on the window. “The purified water technique we use for the solar panels is the same we use for windows. It’s a quick, simple process and it takes less time than you’d be able to do it in yourself. It prevents dirt and dust attaching itself to windows over time, which means you can clean it less, saving you money and time.” H2o will also do inside windows for a complete clean. To experience the long term benefit of purified water cleaning, call H20 Solar Cleaning today on 0419 501 033 or 02 6056 0467.

BETWEEN announcing awards, welcoming new citizens and the biggest barbie of the year, Australia Day on the Border is always a fantastic event. In Albury, hundreds flocked to Noreuil Park to make use of the river and enjoy live music. A particular high point of the day was the announcing of the 2014 Albury award winners. “The Albury Awards are an opportunity to recognise our most selfless and hardworking citizens and community groups,” Albury City mayor Kevin Mack said. “They don’t do it for reward, but it’s important that we acknowledge the work of people who give so much to our community.” Across the Border, around 700 people attended Wodonga’s Australia Day festivities, with a main highlight being the citizenship ceremony with 23 new citizens. Among them were several families from countries including Colombia, India, South Africa, Mauritius, Democratic Republic of Congo, Britain, Poland and Zimbabwe. Australia Day ambassador Marion Lau said it was wonderful to see so many people from diverse backgrounds. After coming to Australia 42 years ago in the wake of the scrapping of the White Australia Policy, Ms Lau experienced the issues of the time surrounding being a female migrant with dark skin, but used her experience to help other migrants. ’I’m proud to call myself an Australian, to be part of society and to demonstrate my own true self,” she said. “To be free to be me.”

Jamie Allen showed his patriotic colours.

Keep your castle safe, secure By KRYSTEN MANUEL YOUR home is your castle - your sanctuary, a place of privacy and safety. When you hear of people who have had their home burgled, it’s common to hear them speak of how uncomfortable it makes them to know someone has invaded that space. “It’s the fact that someone was in my house, touching my stuff ... ” is a common phrase uttered by victims of robbery. Of course, there are many other horrible outcomes of robbery - loss of property, damaged property and in some severe cases, violent attacks. Personal safety is everyone’s responsibility - not just the man of the house. Whether they be daytime robberies or home invaders, the same tactics to deter criminals and keep your house safe can be used. Remember, if you can delay a home invader at the point of entry then you have a chance of deterring them or having time to call the police. A solid core door, strong locks with reinforced strike plates, and reinforced window devices will stop most forced entries.

The weakest home security link is the home occupant who fails to lock doors or windows or who will open the door without question at the sound of a knock. The best defence against home invasion is education and planning. Parents should hold a family meeting to discuss how to answer the door when someone knocks. These simple tips for home security could save you a great amount of trauma: Install solid core doors, heavy duty locks, and window security devices. Lock all doors, windows, and garages at all times. Use four three-inch screws to secure heavy duty lock strike plates in the door frame. Use the door peep-hole before opening the door. Use your porch light to help you to see clearly outside. Never rely on a chain-latch as a barrier to partially open the door. Never open the door to strangers. Call the police if the stranger acts suspiciously. Alert your neighbours to suspicious people. Hold a family meeting to discuss home security plans.

It’s a bargain to boot By EWAN KENNEDY IT’S a great little hot-hatch at a surprising low price. Built in Germany, the Ford Fiesta ST was developed by Ford Team RS, the European arm of Ford’s Global Performance Vehicle group. Based on the standard Fiesta, but with significant upgrades to powertrain, suspension, steering and brakes, the Fiesta ST is priced at just $25,990 plus on-road costs. That’s a lot of car for a very reasonable price. Ford Fiesta ST is a threedoor in a market segment which tends to lean to the convenience of five doors these days. It’s good to see Ford stick with the sportier look of a threedoor, it adds to the nature of this little beastie. The ST has a large trapezoidal honeycomb grille, deep front bumper, projector headlights with LED daytime running lamps, foglamps, a sports lower body kit, rear roof spoiler and a rear diffuser with twin chromed exhausts. Fiesta ST rolls on 17x7 alloy wheels. Inside the cabin are cloth Recaro sports seats, a leather bound steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake. The pedals have a drilled alloy finish. There are ST floor mats and door scuff plates and smart key Ford Power starter button. All this is bathed in ambient LED lighting at night. When driven normally the Fiesta ST outputs are 134 kW of power and 240 Nm of torque. With up to 147 kW (200 bhp) of power and 290 Nm of torque when you use the overboost function the 1.6-litre

Ford’s Fiesta ST is a stunner - and a bargain to boot. four-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine is the most powerful Fiesta ever. As befits a true hot-hatch, the Fiesta ST only runs a sixspeed manual gearbox. Yippee! I know double-clutch gearboxes are faster and more efficient so are used in Ferraris and the like, but there’s nothing quite like using your own skill and driving experience to get the best out of a car. The Fiesta ST showcases some of Ford’s latest technology including Sync voice activation to play music, make and receive hands-free phone calls and call contacts simply by saying their name. It almost goes without saying that Ford Fiesta ST received a five-star rating in Australasian

Model range Ford Fiesta ST three-door hatch: $25,990 (six-speed manual).

crash testing. Crash prevention devices include Enhanced Torque Vectoring Control and three-mode Dynamic Stability Control, features only previously found in more expensive cars. Emergency Assist is hooked up to Ford’s Sync system via your mobile phone. If the airbags are deployed or fuel pump shut-off activated, SYNC will dial emergency services, giving them the affected vehicle’s exact GPS co-ordinates. Potentially a major life saver, it has, again, only been pre-

viously seen in big-price cars. Ford’s global MyKey technology, launched in the new Fiesta ST, is an industry first that allows parents to electronically limit an ‘adult happy’ top speed to140 km/h. It also offers programmable speed alerts between 70km/h and 140km/h that can’t be deactivated by the MyKey user; reduces maximum radio volume to maintain driver concen-

tration; disables the radio until the seatbelts are fastened and prevents deactivation of driver assistance and safety technologies. The Recaro sports seats are firm and supportive, but you wouldn’t want to have a backside that’s too much wider than average. Using cloth instead of leather makes sense in Australia where the stickiness and heat of

leather upholstery can be a pain in summer. The engine is beautifully responsive, all the more so when you remember it’s turbocharged. There’s good torque on tap from low revs and it’s happy to spin to the rev limiter. There’s even a touch of torque steer if you really floor it in the lower gears - great fun. A clever link between engine and cabin by way of a ‘Sound Symposer’ channels the engine note to the cabin. The engine roar when you get stuck into it really adds to Fiesta’s driving experience. The six-speed gearshift is on the notchy side if you want to make fast changes, but is good if you let it change at its own speed. Steering is weighted by just the right amount and gives excellent feedback from the road. Road grip is tenacious and until you’re cornering harder than makes sense on public roads the Fiesta is nicely neutral. If you’re really pushing the Fiesta ST it’s simple to steer in on the throttle as well. Comfort isn’t too bad, but there’s no doubt the ST leans in the direction of performance rather than softness in the suspension equation. Which is exactly as it should be. Rear seat legroom is pretty good and getting in and out through the folded forward fronts seats isn’t too difficult. Ford’s all-new Fiesta ST is a delight to drive and is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of anyone who loves to drive. Yet is very reasonably priced for the amount of fun it provides.

By KRYSTEN MANUEL AN EXCITING opportunity to be part of a well established, highly respected local business is now up for grabs. Albury Auto Gas is saying goodbye to one of its owners, Robert Marcucci, who has significantly helped grow and expand the business since signing the contract seven years ago. “I’m looking for a change in work/lifestyle balance and I got a job offer in Queensland I couldn’t refuse,” he said. With Robert aiming to pack up in coming months, an offer is out there for the appropriate buyer. On the table is a 30 per cent shareholding and a commencing annual salary

tomer base which is always growing and a good relationship with the taxi services around the place - Albury, Wodonga, even as far as Wangaratta and Corowa, so that provides a good solid workload.” The business, built with a focus on quality workmanship and service, is also looking for opportunities to expand its services beyond its current scope of LPG conversions, servicing and mechanical services. “We specialise in repairs and servicing, general mechanical repairs and cylinder testing, be it a vehicle tank or gas bottles,” Tas said. “We do NSW roadworthy inspections, taxi inspections, have a dynotuning service and gas bottle refills.” For inquiries, contact Peter Street at Ray White Albury on 0437 978 974.

FOR fascinating, tangible history, long-lost beauty and a slice of another lifetime, don’t miss the Albury Wodonga Antiques and Collectables Fair. Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton in conjunction with Wodonga District Hospital, the fair has become a great draw-card for collectors both serious and novice alike, with this year promising a host of new professional dealers as well as old favourites. 1 and 2 February will see the Mirambeena Community Centre transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when dealers from all around the country combine. Traditionally the aim of the fair is to cater for all tastes and

incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to several different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride - the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector. The Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair is also a fund-raiser for Wodonga District Hospital

who will be providing delicious light lunches as well as morning and afternoon teas throughout the weekend of the fair, as well as a raffle. The Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair is open to the public from 10am-5pm on Saturday 1 February, and from 10am-4pm on Sunday 2. Admission is $8 for adults and includes a lucky door ticket. Children accompanied by adults are free. There is plenty of parking available nearby and wheelchair access into the hall. Mirambeena Community Centre is situated at 19 Martha Mews Lavington. For any further information please contact Mick Dalton on mobile 0428 446 534.

Empire of song By KRYSTEN MANUEL MUCH to everyone’s delight, one of the headlining acts for the highly anticipated Echuca Moama Riverboats Music Festival is none other than The Cat Empire. The eclectic-flavoured band is known for their highly unique music, broad instrumentation and vivacious live performances. Keen to rock the Riverboats Festival, Jamshid “DJ Jumps” Khadiwhala took some time to speak with NewsWeekly about life in the Empire ... NW: “What’s the best thing about the Australian music scene at the moment?” JK: “I think the Australian music scene, like there’s so many different bands playing their own music and writing their own songs. We have so many young, up and coming musicians, so many well established musicians so there’s a really good flow from generation to generation. We’re a country full of great musicians from any sort of genre. NW: “What was the best festival you’ve played at?” JK: “There’s many. I’d say in Australia Woodford has been one of the best ones, and Bluesfest. And then overseas ... There’s been so many! I guess I liked Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park were awesome in Germany.” NW: “What do you think it is about The Cat Empire that gives it that x-factor?” JK: “I think it’s a combination of good songs and an energetic live performance. We keep the two quite separate and try to focus pretty hard on both. The live show is great because we really bring albums and the songs to life.” NW: “How did your parents influence you musically?” JK: “My mum’s always been into music and dancing. I remember since I was young so I think that wore off on myself and my brother because music’s

International stars The Cat Empire will headline the third Riverboats Music Festival. a big part of our lives, and also dancing as well. They liked a bit of everything. My background is Indian so they used to like a lot of classic Indian stuff, but they also love all the hits like Abba, all the disco classics.” NW: “What do you bring to the band?” JK: “I think I bring a different soundscape to the band because I do the scratching. It adds a unique percussion element to it and a distinct scratching sound and a lot of samples which suit the songs.” NW: “What’s your favourite country?” JK: “It’s hard to say. I like the Netherlands, like Holland. It’s a pretty cool part of the world. I’ve spent a lot of time there and I’ve got lots of good records from there.” NW: “Who do you think is the most talented in the band?”

What’s on

JK: “Everyone’s talented, you know what I mean, It’s like a combination of everyone’s talents coming together to make the music and write the songs. I guess Harry and Felix lead the way with the bulk of the song-writing but I think it’s fair to say everyone’s pretty talented in the band. NW: “Do you have a lucky charm or mascot you use when you’re performing?” JK: “Recently we’ve been touring with a cat’s head ... Like this blow up cat’s head, the artwork from the new album, and that’s sort of become a friend of ours on stage, like the ninth person on stage. It’s always peering over us ...” NW: “What would you like to achieve this year? Do you have New Year’s resolutions or a goal in mind?” JK: “I dunno, probably find a girlfriend and get my mum off my back. That’s about it!”

WHEN I was in Year 7 we were assigned the task of making a movie. With cutting-edge special effects that included a paper plate wrapped in foil and thrown in front of the camera (meant to be a UFO), tomato sauce covered actors (meant to be murder victims) and a plot that was messier than a soup sandwich, it’s safe to say the movie was bad. Really bad. But in comparison to The Marked Ones, it should have won an Oscar. The ‘plot’ (if it can really be referred to as that without disrespecting films like Sharknado) centres around an 18-year-old Latino boy called Jessie. Jessie has been ‘marked’ by the same witches’ coven that

popped up in previous Paranormal Activity films. The marking means Jessie will be possessed by the same demonic force that originally claimed Katie. As Jessie’s friends and grandmother try desperately to get to the bottom of the story, the Jessie they know slips away, revealing something else. Watching this film is like holding your eyelids open to see how long it takes your eyeballs to dry out - it’s stupid, it’s annoying, it’s eventually painful and the real beauty is you’re putting yourself through it. The plot is by far the most random, infuriating element of The Marked Ones. At one stage the house actually turns into the original home of Katie and Micah - stupid, yes, but also an ironic reminder of how good the first film was and how much of a complete disaster its youngest sibling is. In the words of the famous film reviewer Roger Ebert, “I would rather eat a golf ball than see this movie again.” - Krysten Manuel

Rolling cycle of music Throughout the 1970s and 1980s a convenience product called the cassette tape threatened the LP record, with musical listening fidelity being reduced for the lure of portable audio. It was during this period that music listening peaked such that by the mid-1980s, many different genres were becoming mainstream. Musical education was well and truly alive. By the late 1980s the compact disc was introduced, and this educated the person who ditched the LP record for the cassette in a return to musical quality. The CD created far more space within the stores and before long the choice in the stores exploded. This was a new beginning for many artists who had difficulty having their music heard outside their own country. Record companies were beginning to lose their grip on what was a highly controlled and organised and at times corrupt industry, almost dictating what we could

IT IS said that musical tastes go around in cycles - one minute you’re the biggest name on the planet and next you’re in the 50-cent bin. Music software is an evolving revolution. With the development of the radiogram in the 1930s and stereo in the 1950s, the world was opened up to entertainment of quality in the home. The graph shows the generational change in musical tastes, not just from Baby Boomers to Generation X but with the changes of technology and the way the new technology interacted. In the 1950s it was the 78s and big band, and jazz was dominant. The introduction of higher grade sounding microgroove stereo recordings brought to the living room artists that had a high degree of musical fidelity, leading into the rock and roll and folk era as the LP record improved the dynamic sound and the beginning of the move away from radiograms to modular audio hi-fi equipment.

listen to. In the mid-1990s mp3 audio or compressed digital audio had its beginnings and through the 2000s access to file sharing and easy duplication created a surprising change in listening habits. The top 40 still had an impact, however many more genres, artists and musical styles emerged. The benefit we see today is the music industry is diverse, live performances are more active and evolving. The major music houses do not have the same control. We still see the manufactured artist, however all styles of music now are receiving a better chance of exposure. The 2010 and beyond scene is even more dynamic. Music streaming has slowed up the file sharing industry, with many alternative streaming companies providing over 20 million musical choices and the radio stations that allow you to select the type, and artist for your listening pleasure for free.

The outdoor area of 8 Caernarvon is spectacular, showcasing the best in outdoor living. With the ability to completely open two of the three ‘walls’ or glass doors, this area truly makes the most of stunning views. The outdoor room offers a rangehood, ceiling fan, tiles underfoot and classy downlights. Below is a 15m x 2.5 lap pool. What more could you want?

Sprinters on fire

It was a photo finish for the 2014 Albury Wodonga Gift. From left: Noddy Angelakos (fifth place), Mark Hignett (second place), John Adams (fourth place), Lee Forrest (third place), Luke Stevens (first place), Matt Carpenter (sixth place). Picture: ADAM WILSON

Stevens wins thriller finish By KRYSTEN MANUEL HUMBLE, talented and still unsure of his future in running, Luke Stevens has taken out the Albury Wodonga Gift in his very first season. Second from the back marker and starting off five metres, Stevens Australian Day Gift experience was rather dynamic, from the heat through to the photo finish final. “I won my heat and it gave me a lot of confidence,” the 19-year-old told NewsWeekly. “Then I got second in the semi and I was actually the slowest qualifying time going into the final. “I didn’t really think about it too much. The hard work and perseverance I had through training got me over the line, “ he said. “But every other athlete on that field put 100 per cent into it and all credit to them because in all honesty, that was anyone’s race. “When I crossed the line I didn’t get my hopes up, I just waited

I didn’t get ahead of myself, I just stayed cool and collected and as soon as they raised the white flag I knew it was my race.… Gift winner Luke Stevens

for the results,” Stevens said. “I didn’t get ahead of myself, I just stayed cool and collected and as soon as they raised the white flag I knew it was my race.” In a time of 12.527 seconds, Stevens was just 0.013 seconds ahead of veteran Mark Hignett. An athlete who only started run-

ning to improve his football, Stevens said he would now try to find a balance between the two sports, possibly competing in Australia’s richest foot race, The Stawell Gift in April. “I still love to play footy but I also love to do running so I’m going to try and find a way to do both,” he said. “Running is in the summer and I could use it as a good warm up, and hopefully I could try and make the season just in time, but I’ll figure that out when the time comes. “I haven’t really thought about it (Stawell) too much, it’s a little while to go yet. “We’re only just at the halfway point of the season but it’s in the back of my mind, it’s something that every athlete on the tour wants to have a crack at, and the steed it has over such a long period of time is a great honour.” Stevens is trained by Werribee trainer John Henry, who had another win with Matt Hargreaves at the Wangaratta Gift on Saturday night.

400m SportzBiz Novice Series winner Ben Mason crossed the line in a time of 48.628 seconds.

Commercial Club Fastest Footballer James Smith won the hotly contested race in a time of 11.934 seconds.

Breen blitzes field By KRYSTEN MANUEL WITH 17 metres of ground to make up on the field, London Olympian Melissa Breen still walked out of the Albury Wodonga Women’s Gift with the coveted green sash. Pipping the front-marker Celia Cosgriff at the post by 0.059 seconds, Breen completed the 120-metre handicap race in a sizzling 13.975 seconds. Having come straight from a Commonwealth Games A qualifier on Friday night, the 23-year-old now has her sights on the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Bowls

Teams jockey for finals spots as main contest resumes WITH the Ovens and Murray Bowls Division Pennant Committee invoking the heat rule for Round 11 the previous week and abandoning play, Round 12 had players returning to the greens after the holiday break. It was the battle of the smaller clubs in A2 Pennant when St James travelled to Chiltern last Saturday in a round where teams are jockeying for finals positions or avoiding relegation. St James’ Heath Smith met Chiltern’s Clem D’Amelio. Smith’s side struggled early on a newly renovated holding green. After four ends, St James was down 2-7 but Smith’s side clawed back winning the next four ends to lead 10-7 after eight ends. D’Amelio counter-punched to take the lead by a single shot, 13-12 after 14 ends. Smith was getting great sup-

port from his debutant leader, Tom Trewin. St James’ Mick Millsom and his team were under the pump from the outset when they drew Chiltern’s John O’Neill. Millsom opened his account on the ninth end with a single shot with the score 10-1 in favour of Chiltern. Millsom claimed five shots on end 11, only to drop four shots the following end. Millsom with third Sue Middleton, second Ray Waymouth and lead Beth Parker, was able to take it up to O’Neill to be even at the afternoon tea break, 18 shots apiece. Wayne Green from Chiltern made the most of the home ground advantage early, leading nine shots to zero after five ends, over St James’ Stuart Ralph. Ralph fought back to be within two shots on the 13th end (9-11), but

Wally Mann (Chiltern) and Haydn Smith (St James) in post-match discussion. then dropped a pair of threes. At the intermission Green still held sway, 18-10. Chiltern’s Wally Mann and St James’ Haydn Smith met in a topsy-turvy affair. Smith was able to take a slight advantage early, but Mann and his side were able to rein in

Smith with the score all tied up, 10-all after 10 ends. Smith then was able to take a slight advantage once again to lead 18-15 after 18 ends. Due to the heaviness of the green the intermission took place well into the game. At the resumption of play, Heath Smith showed why he was recently included in the Ovens and Murray Region side. He dominated proceedings, winning five of the final six ends and to take victory 28-21. Millsom and his team were also dominant players once play resumed. Millsom claimed five shots on end 19, and consolidated that with a one and a three the next two ends. O’Neill had no answers in the final stages going down by eight shots (29-21) after leading by 10 shots earlier in the game. Stuart Ralph and Co. were able to stem the tide somewhat

but were never quite able to eclipse Chiltern’s Wayne Green. With only four shots separating the teams with one end to play, Green struck, claiming four shots to take the rink points for Chiltern, 27-19. Haydn Smith and his team of Neville Hewson (third), Mick Johnson (second) and Ged Parker (first) were too strong for their Chiltern foes, Mann, Stuart Menzies (third), Lin Chambers (second) and John Lappin (first), in the final stages of their match. Parker had lead well all day in difficult circumstances, with Johnson and Hewson supporting with accurate weighted shots when required. St James took the rink win 28-20. Final scores: Chiltern 89 shots (2 points) to St. James 104 shots (16 points).

Local Sport Champion event By KRYSTEN MANUEL WODONGA’S sparkling new aquatic facility WAVES hosted the premier annual event for country swimmers over the Australia Day weekend - the 2014 Victorian Country Swimming Championships. More than 3000 people attended the event including 760 competitors from 40 swimming clubs and 60-70 technical officials from Bairnsdale to Horsham. The championships showcased 400 individual races across 100 events, with records broken on all three days. Wodonga Swimming Club president Harold Stadlemann said the event was a resounding success “The mood was high in anticipation and that expectancy was delivered, he said. “From walking into the venue it has such a commanding presence with its 10 lanes. “It’s one of the very few 10-lane double-ended start swimming pools with electronic touch pads in Australia - there’s certainly nothing in between Melbourne and Sydney that has that, Mr Stadlemann said. “We commend the Wodonga City Council for having the faith to step out and build something like that. It’s only because of this we could host that type of event and hopefully national and even international events to come. “The facility with its space and design lent it-

200m Individual Medley: Olivia Plunket, Georgia Tsebelis and Elli Warren. self to that purpose. And it wasn’t just the facility that impressed travellers. “Traralgon being for quite some years the dominate club had a resounding victory of course, second place was Geelong and third was Wodonga, Mr Stadlemann said.

“A tremendous effort from the Wodonga Swim Club. Albury had some good results as well, and the other Ovens and Murray Clubs. Mr Stadlemann said the event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of local sponsors, the YMCA, Wodonga Council and VCSC project manager Trevor Deacon.

Phoebe Plunkett presented the medals to 200m individual medley.
