Noosa bikers and Coast MP Peter Wellington were among the thousands who attended a ‘freedom’ rally in Brisbane on Sunday.

More than 2,000 protesters packed Emma Miller Place, Brisbane, to voice their opposition to what have been dubbed the “Bikie Laws”. The Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment Act 2013 (VLAD), was introduced in October last year in an effort to curb bikie-related crime following a public brawl between rival gangs on the Gold Coast. However, the arrests of five men just before Christmas, for allegedly drinking at a Sunshine Coast venue, sparked state-wide outcry. In support of the men jailed and to condemn the laws, the rally was held in Brisbane where the atmosphere was electric as the crowd stood to cheer on the motorcycle riders, who the rode into the rally with their fists raised high. Police were out in force, not to

For tough little Leo it was the start of five major operations, including open heart surgery, that dogged the first fourand-a-half months of his young life. Today the Marcus Beach toddler loves life, just like any other youngster, and his mum and dad, Lisa and Campbell, want to thank the charity that helped them through the ordeal, HeartKids Queensland.

Nicklin MP Peter Wellington addressed the packed amphitheatre in a passionate speech condemning the VLAD laws, Attorney General Jarrod Bleijie and Queensland Premier Campbell Newman. “On Australia Day we usually celebrate our freedoms and our liberties, usually the envy of countries around the world,” he said. “But here today, at our Freedom rally, we are celebrating the start of our fight to win back those freedoms and liberties that (Premier) Campbell Newman has taken away.”

A tour around Facebook saw most of my friends enjoying family barbecues, backyard cricket and beach trips. All happy, peaceful, Aussie family activities. In Noosa Shire Police warned that they would be out in force and appealed to people to behave. Most did. It’s a shame Sunday had to end with an alleged stabbing at a local campsite but, generally, Noosa did well. Other places didn’t do quite so well and, again, we read about one-punch assaults – a split-second action that can ruin many lives forever. People are violent – always have been, always will be. But surely the key is to educate against its use and minimise its impact? So how good it is to see that One Billion Rising for Justice is returning to Noosa. Following the 2013 inaugural event, which saw over 150 men and women perform a simple, four-minute choreographed dance routine on Noosa Main Beach to raise awareness regarding violence against women, Noosa is gearing up to do it all over again on Friday, February 14 at 6pm. The Noosa event is part of a global movement. In 2013 over one billion people in 207 countries simultaneously performed the same dance routine to signal an end to violence against women.

Local One Billion Rising for Justice organiser and dance artist, Gail Hewton said this year she was hoping to see over 300 people participate in the free event. “Last year’s event was so positive and powerful and we’d love more people to join us this year”, she said. “The power of dance, music and community is an incredible combination and although it’s a serious issue we have a lot of fun along the way.” Gail stressed that no prior dance experience or fitness level was required to be part of the group dance display. “The simple choreography that forms our four minute routine means that everyone over 13 years of age can participate.” Gail said the Noosa event – being held in front of Noosa Heads Surf Club - was the only one on the Sunshine Coast that she was aware of. “According to the One Billion Rising for Justice website, it is estimated that one in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime – that’s one billion women,” she said.

MAN FACES COURT OVER STABBING A man charged with stabbing a Cooroibah man in the chest on Australia Day has faced Maroochydore Magistrates Court.

Noosa Council “flying squad” - Councillors Sandy Bolton, Frank Wilkie, Frank Pardon and Joe Jurisevic - were at North Shore yesterday as part of their series of quick-fire visits across the Shire to catch up with local issues.

More than 50 sites from Peregian to Kin Kin have been checked out in the last two weeks. This hands-on approach to hearing concerns is already a hit with Noosa, one farmer telling Cr Wilkie that: “This was the way it was in the old days when councillors used to visit people on their properties to see for themselves what was going on.” Cr Wilkie told Noosa Today the no-divisions shire meant councillors had to work together to find solutions for problems, or possible problems, across the region. “There’s no more looking after your own patch. We intend continuing visiting residents and communities personally to hear their concerns, discussing answers and solutions wherever possible. “Noel Playford and Bob Abbot are sharing their collective wisdom and Tony Wellington has provided extensive, detailed background briefings on issues he’s been dealing with.” Cr Wilkie said de-amalgama-

The 20-year-old man was charged with one count each of unlawful wounding and assault occasioning bodily harm after allegedly stabbing a man in the torso after a fight broke out at the camping grounds on John’s Road, Cooroibah. Police attended the camping grounds, known as John’s Landing, at about 7.25pm on Sunday night. The victim was taken to Nambour General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the alleged offender was arrested and taken to the Maroochydore watch house. The case was adjourned.

A traffic blitz on Sunday resulted in 652 random breath tests, with seven drink drivers arrested, 19 tickets issued for traffic offences and 12 people arrested on 14 charges, including public nuisance and drug possession. Snr Sgt McReight said he was most shocked at two motorbike riders who were caught riding without helmets.

Future not so sweet for bees The Coast’s honey industry is facing a tough future but not for the reasons the experts would have us believe.

The Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC) says “abnormal weather conditions” are set to deliver the lowest national honey

yields in at least a decade. But local beekeeper Zane Hacker – The Bee Man – said the real reason behind reduced yield is easier to rectify than the weather. Trevor Weatherhead, Executive Director of the AHBIC said the combination of excessive heat, flood and drought had hit prime honey producing areas in recent times, reducing honey supplies by over 50 per cent.

But Mr Hacker said the real problem lay in people’s backyards. “Honey production is affected by a lot of different factors, not just the hot weather. The simple answer is that bees rely on flowers, flowers rely on trees and plants, and people need to stop cutting them down,” he said. “A heatwave is a short-term problem and bees are actually really good at adjusting the tempera-

ture in the hive. “The real problem is tree clearing, and also people planting the wrong types of tree. Native trees are drought-resistant, more resilient to pests and encourage more bees. “People think about honey when they think about bees but they forget about the crucial job bees do by pollinating. For example, they may not eat honey but they may like eating nuts.

One nut relies on one bee to pollinate it. “If bee numbers drop, pollination will drop and our crops will suffer. So if people want to help, they need to stop chopping down trees and start planting native trees.” Mr Hacker supplies honey to IGA stores on the Sunshine Coast. With over 15,000 likes on the Visit Noosa Facebook page, Tourism Noosa has recently had an independent review of the social media page showing some positive statistics. The growth in the fan base encouragingly reflects Noosa’s main markets of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne with Melbourne fans growing by eight per cent following Tourism Noosa’s winter campaign.

Our international audience similarly aligns with the destination’s major inbound markets of the UK, US and Europe. The audit compared our Facebook page to key

competitor destination pages and, when looking at levels of interaction, Visit Noosa had the highest follower engagement rate, double that of Australia.com [Tourism Australia’s page], Visit Gold Coast, the Margaret River Wine Region and Sunshine Coast Queensland. Even though Visit Noosa may not have as many fans as some of these other pages, the Visit Noosa fans are incredibly engaged, a pleasing outcome of our consistently inspirational posts. Noosa turns out for local art Close to 300 people, including Mayor Noel Playford and councillors, showed their support for art in Noosa last Friday at the Regional Art Gallery, with curator Nina Shadforth saying, “I believe we’re really going forward in this new Noosa area.

“I’m seeing people here I haven’t seen during the time we were under the auspices of the former amalgamated council.” Presented by Friends of Noosa Gallery, the exhibition is open until February 16 and has 142 works, featuring Emma Freeman (On the Edge), Kim Schoenberger (Expressions of Love 2) and about 70 local artists (A Taste of Art). “Emma is quite an identity in the community and a lot of people would have come to see her work. Her portraiture is quite figurative and the manner in which she paints is just as vibrant as her personality,” Nina said. “Of course, Friends of the Gallery artists would have had their supporters as well and

She contributed a lot to it. When she died from cancer in 2010. I decided to stage a “Biggest Morning Tea” fundraiser. I did a piece and all my artist friends contributed. It was held at a local gallery and we raised more than $7000.” “I’ve been working on this exhibition since last February. Council extends its reach Noosa Council is taking its services to the people by expanding its current mobile library service.

The Noosa Council Mobile Library will now visit Lake Macdonald every Monday, from 1.30pm to 4pm, and Noosa Civic every Monday, from 8.30am to noon, as part of its new timetable.

Starting from February 3, the custom-built semi-trailer will roll into town as part of a sixmonth trial timetable. Co-ordinator of Library Services Kerri Contini is excited about the new era for the service. ‘It’s great to be able to bring the mobile library to more locations, especially Lake Macdonald where there is a large

The Mobile Library will stop on Lake Macdonald Drive at the BBQ and playgrounds area adjacent to the Botanical Gardens. “Council recognises that people have very busy lives so, by bringing the library to Noosa Civic, we hope that people will make it their ‘one-stop-shop’, borrowing their books, CDs or

Dark side of modern adolescence JIM FAGAN Mobile phones have enabled teen bullying to escalate in Australian schools – sometimes with fatal results - and last September students at Noosa Pengari Steiner High School put their own and other well publicised and confronting experiences into a stage production consisting of six plays that had the capacity audience laughing and crying.

The students wrote the scripts with the help of their then high school teacher, award-winning playwright, journalist and now new Noosa Councillor Frank Wilkie. He felt their work should be captured in a book which he has just published and yesterday he went back to the school to give the 12 students involved their copies. “I promised we would make it into a book and I’m just following through on the promise,” he told Noosa Today. The book is called “Cyberteen”, which he describes as a “a comedic drama on cyber bullying which aims to shed light on the dark side of modern adolescence. “Statistics suggest that if your child has a mobile phone and access to social media, then it’s likely they’ve initiated, witnessed or been the target of cyber bullying and that you will never know. “Modern technology is brilliant.

cause of death for 10-14 year olds in Queensland in 2012-2013. “I know of at least one Sunshine Coast student who committed suicide at school in 2013 after being cyber bullied. “There were no scripts available on the rise of cyber bullying, so I thought ‘Right, we’ll create one.’ I would love to see the students’ work performed in other schools across

Queensland.” The six plays linked by a narration deliver a graphic insight into the who, what, how and why teens do what they do. None of the scripts includes teens sharing their pain with parents. “This is a stage play about teens, written by teens and a revelation for

any parent who wants to understand the shadow side of the world our children are growing up in,” Frank said. “For the 13-16 year old, acceptance by the peer group means everything. Exclusion or derision can be devastating. It’s always a shock for parents to discover their child has been affected. “This play, Cyber Teen, shows the bullies, victims and bystanders in action and asks the audience which one are they?” Frank said while the subject matter was serious, teenagers were also incredibly resilient and hilarious. “This is about valuing what Noosa’s young people are saying about the world they live in and not the world we adults like to think they live in. “Their work is insightful, brutally honest but also darkly comic. There were laughs as well as tears when it was performed. “The main message? One person, one word, one act of kindness or bravery in the face of difficult odds can make a world of difference. Prepare for a Petersen comeback Coast MP, bikies join Brisbane rally FROM PAGE 1 Former Noosa Shire Council mayoral candidate Dr Patricia Petersen also addressed the rally, wearing a leather jacket from her “University motorcycle riding days”. Dr Petersen, who has not been seen in the media since her defeat at the Noosa Council elections, said she felt it necessary to attend the rally. “For today, something as important as this, I felt it necessary to come out and throw my support behind it,” she said. “I’m not an

adversary of the LNP State Government, far from it, and I consider many of the MPs that are in place to be my friends. “But friends sometimes disagree over ideological issues and matters. In relation to this issue, I’m very opposed to the new laws. I think they’re too far reaching. They impact not only on those people they’re supposedly targeting, they can impact all of us.” Other speakers on the day included the sister of the last “Yandina Five” member, Steven Smith, 28, who remains in jail; Independent candidate for Griffith Travis Windsor, and Zeke Bentley, who is leading the United Motorcycle Council’s High Court challenge of the new laws. Donations were collected throughout the rally and will be used to fund the High Court challenge.

JOLENE OGLE Dr Patricia Petersen hasn’t ruled out a return to Noosa politics, saying she will score the job of Mayor sooner or later.

Speaking exclusively to Noosa Today at the Brisbane Freedom Day rally on Sunday, Dr Petersen said people have been asking where she has been since her defeat in the Noosa Shire Council elections. Dr Petersen said she has been attending to her mother who suffered a stroke during her first election campaign and rehearsing with her band Miss March, who performed at the rally. “But in addition to that, just working behind the scenes,” she said. “I’ve taken some time out away from it all, I suppose, from being in the media so regularly and, I’ve gone back to helping people under the radar a little bit. “It feels really great.” When asked if she will return to run in the next Noosa Shire Council election, Dr Petersen said “possibly”.

Childcare, Aussie-style! Noosa Outlook Childcare Centre celebrated Australia Day in true Aussie style with an outdoor barbecue, thong throwing and some traditional Aussie songs. Educators and children arrived dressed in our national colours and were treated to face painting, Australian tattoos and art activities. What a fun start to the long weekend!

BALANCE OF NATURE We should thank John Turner for revealing that scientists across the world who are spending their lives working on the CO2 problem are totally wrong. According to Internet sources, world-wide emissions of CO2 are around 29 billion tonnes annually. (Can you imagine the volume of that amount of gas?) This CO2 had been locked down in the form of coal and oil by natural processes taking hundreds of millions of years and this helped to form a relatively stable ‘balance of nature’. We are now releasing that stored CO2 in a very short time. Perhaps, as Mr Turner said, CO2 has no effect on global warming, but I feel that the opinions and research of thousands of qualified, dedicated scientists should not be taken lightly.

GOOD WORK After moving to Tewantin in June last year, we now relish our two Noosa local papers every week, after only fortnightly getting the enjoyable Eumundi Green. I especially get a lot of information, entertainment and a little annoyance from the letters to the editor. The articles are more positive than negative and there are only a couple

of people who constantly write in, that cause me irritation. I read a recent contribution in your last issue that forces me to comment and a service that needs recognition. On the second day of our new Noosa Council, two very friendly Council employees pulled up in their truck and cleaned out our drain. This service had not been done since moving here and the neighbours tell us it’s been years. Congratulations Noosa Council. I read with great amusement and concern the article entitled NOT CINDERELLA by Benny Pike. All I say is Benny, get out of that nursing home in your mind, hence only seeing older people. If you look at Noosa with a different attitude, let go of the past, you might enjoy what a new Noosa now has to offer. Don’t be concerned, because I believe in 30 years time our next generation will applaud the sacrifices and the hard work of the many who brought this de-amalgamation to fruition.

DEBUNKING MYTHS Bravo, Steve Hall (NT, Jan 23) you are undoubtedly correct. The profound ignorance, ideology, misunderstanding and mendacity permeating discussion on climate change, and other areas of science, are indeed an

enormous embarrassment to the science literate community. Obscurants seem to be everywhere these day, especially when scientific facts bump up against vested interests, ideology and apathy. It is self evident to most that decisions in rational societies should be based on accurate information, not on myths, distortions, misunderstanding, or the bellicosity of lobby groups with vested interests. However, debunking scientific myths and misinformation, often deliberately promoted, is difficult especially where the science is complex and difficult to reconcile with a person’s everyday experience. Winning the ‘argument’ about climate change is vital, of course, and if this requires continuous debunking of a seemingly unending stream of scientific illiteracy then so be it. However, it would be a lot better if discussion could focus on what to do about climate change.

MASTERS APPEAL I was disappointed to read in Noosa Today (Jan 23) that last Monday’s council meeting was closed to the public while it considered the appeal against the Masters Home Improvement Store and Showroom for the Noosa Business Centre. I was led to believe that Noosa Council meetings

would be open to the public amid greater transparency and openness under the new council, an edict not always apparent or followed by the Sunshine Coast Council. There was no reason given for the closure of the meeting to the public although I suspect it was placed under the “commercial-in-confidence” banner which can be very convenient at times for councils. I understand that the matter is still subject to legal proceedings but in my opinion, this is not an ideal start for a fledgling council which has been around for just a few weeks and one which we were told would be transparent and open in its dealings and decisions. As a rate payer I hope this was a one off which should not have occurred and that it will not become the norm every time there is a contentious issue to be debated in the chambers.

BALANCE PLEASE So many people writing in to tell us how our earth is getting warmer. But, and it really is a large BUT, we are told by those scientists who know, that our earth has NOT warmed for more than 16 years. And in the USA/ Canada/Europe they are freezing in temperatures that have not been this low for a long time. I would honestly like to see some balance here - the

argument that it is CO2 that causes the increase in temperature is clearly totally false - the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere over these same 16 years has massively increased, but the temperature has not! And the latest efforts by those on what has become known as “the ship of fools” to sail into what they told us and clearly firmly believed would be relatively clear water, turned out to be solid ice, totally refuting all their clearly expressed “scientific beliefs”! When these scientists can accurately predict tomorrow’s weather accurately, we might have another think.

Mr Lobb does not live in the Noosa Shire and it would be nice if he tried to do something constructive to solve the many problems of the Sunshine Coast Council area which he is part of. Noosa does not need his assistance, we have many qualified people who do their research well and state the facts as they really are.

EUMUNDI ROTARY The Rotary Club of Cooroy has formed a satellite club in Eumundi with 16 new members. The Satellite Club concept is a new initiative of Rotary International where an existing Rotary Club is able to form a subsidiary under its umbrella to increase membership of Rotary in another location. “The concept of the satellite club is a wonderful idea,” said Cooroy Rotary President Lyn Hodges. “It will allow 16 Eumundi residents to join Rotary close to where they live. When numbers grow, the satellite club will be chartered by Rotary International as a Rotary Club in its own right.” The 16 new Rotarians were inducted by Acting District Governor Dai Mason in Eumundi on Thursday. Sticky business LIFE OF BRINE PHIL JARRATT

To be honest, I haven’t bought a block of wax for about 30 years, so when the last rub of the last block of something that comes attached to a little plastic cap began to scratch the deck rather than wax it, I went into a mild panic, throwing stuff around the garage and emptying boxes of fin screws and instant repair kits gone hard. There had to be another few blocks of comped stock somewhere!

But no. Nada. Zilch. There was a principle at stake here, so checking the calendar and the depth of wax cover on the couple of boards I ride, I realised I could probably fudge it through to the next free wax opportunity, the Noosa Festival of Surfing in March. So out came the wax combs. I can hear what you’re saying out there, reader: for God’s sake, Phil, go and support your local surf shop with a couple of bucks over the counter! But my aversion to supporting the commercialisation of traction goes back a long, long way, to the days when a filthy great rectangular slab of paraffin wax cost 20 cents at the hardware shop, and you could melt it down in one of mum’s big casserole saucepans (and jeez, didn’t she love that!) over the Hotpoint stove, maybe throw in a secret additive or two to make it softer, or smell nicer, then pour it into about a dozen paper cups. Bingo! A summer’s worth of wax. Back in the ‘60s some blokes got quite good at this – like Mike Doyle, Rusty Miller and Garth Murphy at Surf Research in California – and inevitably the consumer wax revolution blossomed (with luridly-named products like Zog’s Sex Wax and Mrs Palmer’s leading the way) until the arrival of Slipcheck and Gripfeet, two aerosols of (probably) highly toxic, sand-blasted tarmac mix guaranteed to rip holes in your chest and knees. I tried both, but until 1970, when working, surfing and chasing girls began to fully commandeer my time, I stuck with hardware shop paraffin and mum’s saucepan. In the many years since, we’ve seen wax substitutes and deck traction systems come and

go, and I’m sure readers will have their own favourites, but nothing had captured my attention so dramatically as a French product called Lick Liquid Surfwax, which came into my life just as I combed my deck and nothing happened. Down to rock bottom again, as Jimmy would say. The packaging says that it’s biodegradable, non-toxic and – wait for it – sticky. You apply it by dribbling a little across the deck, then carding it back and forth in a manner that might remind old timers of late nights and toilet seats. The nice (and local) distributors sent me a tube to try, and when I buggered it up by putting too much on, they came around to my house and showed me how to apply it properly. Then I went surfing. The verdict? Well, the jury is still out on this one. It’s sticky, but not in a nice way – more like lying on your belly on a tiled floor after a playgroup luncheon for three-year-olds. It kind of works, but it’s clear, so don’t look down as you pull into a double overhead reefie: oh my god, I forgot to wax my board! I could get used to it, or I could go back to my roots. (I wonder if Bunnings sell paraffin and mum can remember where she stored her saucepans.) Anyway, wax is a very personal thing – Zog’s founder Rick Herzog once said: “We like to have a little moment with our board before we go out, and waxing up gives it to us” – so you be the judge. If you get the chance, give Lick a go. HOBIE – BACKYARD TO EMPIRE My friend, former colleague and neighbour in Laguna Beach, Paul Holmes, has carved a niche for himself in recent years profiling some of the greats of the American surfboard industry. Sunday afternoon backyard barbecues with the late Dale Velzy at his California ranch culminated in Holmes’ first book of the series, Velzy Is Hawk, and he soon followed up with Bing Surfboards, in which he told the tale of the legendary Bing Copeland. As epic as the tales of both these gentlemen were, they were nothing to match the story of Hobie Alter, now in his 80s, whose imagination and innovation took him from backyard surfboard production to a global marine empire. Doing Hobie justice was a big job requiring time and money, so Holmes teamed up with Orange County entrepreneur and philanthropist Spencer Croul, and the result is a long-awaited and encyclopaedic 300-page coffee table book that landed on my desk with a thud over New Year.

As you would expect from the man who created the Hobie Cat, this is a book as much about sailing as it is about surfing, but I found the pioneer days the most intriguing, with young Hobie building his first balsa boards under his family’s beachfront bungalow at Laguna Beach, forming a brains trust with fellow industry pioneers like Walter and Flippy Hoffman, Gordon “Grubby” Clark and Phil Edwards, and opening California’s first real surf shop on Coast Highway at Dana Point. When it comes to surfing history, I’m a sucker for detail, and Paul spares the reader none of it in this fascinating book. Thanks to Hobie and his mates, Laguna Beach became the essence of surf cool in the 1950s, and the photo here is from a commercial shoot for Kokak, with Hobie leading the way in the centre in white shorts, wife-to-be Sharon next to him. This became a billboard above New York’s Grand Central Station.

Nutrition for mums-to-be Shop well, stay well! A University of the Sunshine Coast Nutrition and Dietetics student wants to make it easier for firsttime pregnant women to find sound nutritional advice online.

Honours student Catherine Robichaud, 30, is conducting research to help determine which Internet sites are most likely to attract the attention of mums-to-be. She’s keen to chat with first-time pregnant women across the region, from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane, about their experiences of searching the web for information about food.

Australian travellers in Thailand are being urged to take care after Bangkok was placed in a state of emergency amid civil unrest.

The Thai Government has imposed a 60-day state of emergency, which gives security forces the power to impose curfews, detain suspects without charge, censor media, ban political gatherings of more than five people and declare areas off-limits. The state of emergency applies to Bangkok and the neighbouring provinces of Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakarn, and includes the Suvarnabhumi International Airport, one of the busiest in Asia. Australian visitors to Thailand are being urged to check their travel insurance policies as insurers are warning that if they are injured in the civil unrest, they may not be covered.

That Air New Zealand is extending its seasonal flights between Auckland and Sunshine Coast Airport for the next three years.

The 2014 season will run from June to October, with three flights a week during peak periods on Sundays, Tuesdays and a new Friday service. There will be 42 return trips over 17 weeks in 2014, extending to 28 in 2015 and 30 weeks from June to January in 2016/17. This band has additional history with Rory and Keith originally playing together in the very successful top coast band, The Rocketeers until they disbanded in mid 2001. Over time various band members came and went with different bands until Industry of Kool was formed in mid2008 and it has gone from strength to strength ever since. Focus on traditional fare If you’re searching for traditional, authentic Indian food then head straight to your local Bombay Bliss. Restaurant owner Krishna Pathak said Bombay Bliss is one of the only Indian restaurants to cook with a Tandoor, the most authentic way to cook naan and entrees.

The round clay ovens traditionally have a coal or wood fire in the bottom and can take 45 minutes to reach the ideal temperature range of 350 to 450 degrees. Meat is usually cooked in the special ovens, with Bombay Bliss’ chicken marinated in a yoghurt mix for 36 hours before cooking to give the meat flavour and a protective coating to keep it moist. As well as chicken you can cook fish, lamb and vegetables in the oven, but according to Krishna, Tandoors are not often used in modern restaurants because they call for a high level of technique and experience. Krishna said that while the world has become focussed on efficiency, Bombay Bliss prefers to rely on tradition when serving authentic meals. “We are coming back to the traditional,” he said. “Something that

INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup unsalted butter at room temperature, plus more for pan 1/2 cup blanched hazelnuts, chopped 60g bittersweet chocolate, chopped 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup sugar 2 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 large eggs 1 cup plain whole Greek yogurt METHOD

Preheat oven to 350°. Butter an 8” square baking pan and set aside. Toss hazelnuts, chocolate, cinnamon and ¼ cup sugar in a bowl. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl. Using an electric mixer on high speed, beat butter and remaining ¾ cup sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, beating to blend between additions and occasionally scraping down sides of bowl. With mixer on low speed, add dry ingredients in three lots, alternating with yogurt. Pour half of batter into prepared pan and smooth top. Top with half of hazelnut mixture. Spoon remaining batter over and smooth top. Top with remaining hazelnut mixture. Bake cake until top is golden brown and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean, about 40–45 minutes. Transfer pan to a wire rack and cool before turning out.

I received an e-mail from Rauno Aaltonen (Finland Arctic Driving School) a few days ago letting me know he has just won the “Planai Classic” in Austria in what he calls “difficult conditions”. This event combines a classic car rally with ski racing and is limited to pre1973 cars with a wide variety of makes and models being among just 55 entries accepted. First the motor sport lovers have to prove that their classic cars are worth their horse power then the living skiing legends show their artful skill on the pistes. It is an opportunity for spectators to also see the great legends of motorsport put their classic cars through their paces taking in some of the alpine scenery around Styric and Salzburg. After watching video of the event I am happy to have a nice “hot” start to our season in Warwick in the very near future.

Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing management last week finalised a partnership with Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading surf forecasting website, Swellnet. com, that will see live coverage streamed around the world every day.

Festival director Phil Jarratt said live streaming was one of the most exciting developments of the year for the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest surfing event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The partnership with Ben Matson and his team at Swellnet not only gives us the best technical expertise for webcasting, but also a platform from which huge numbers of people will be able to access the event. Swellnet is the best forecast and webcam site in Australia, viewed by hundreds of thousands of surfers every day, but it also has extremely popular news and feature content followed around the world.â&#x20AC;? Big honour for Noosa

Big news for Noosa this week, however, was that the president of Noosa Heads SLSC Gerard O’Brien, who was instrumental in leading the club to its major achievement in being named the Australian Surf Life Saving Club of the Year for 2012/13, has been appointed to the board of Surf Life Saving Queensland. This office involves being both a director of the state organization, as well as a member of the crucial Audit Finance and Compliance Committee. This is indeed a high honour for both Gerard and the club. ‘’While the appointment is obviously an honour for me personally, I believe it is also good for our club as it recognises the outstanding contribution that the club plays in the broader surf lifesaving movement,” he said.

On the competition calendar the Australian Day weekend is always big with both major interstate and open carnivals being conducted in Sydney. This year was no different. Noosa team members Jet Kenny, Jordan Mercer, Alex Nolan and Rohani Bakhach represented their state at Newport on Friday and, on Saturday, all the Noosa competitors hit the beach at the Manly carnival. Noosa Today will next week talk to our three clubs and update you on who and what to look out for in the months ahead. The heavy training sessions that our local clubs have been conducting is about to pay dividends. On Friday evening both the Noosa and Sunshine Beach clubs were saddened to learn of the passing of Jenny Hales, a lady held in the highest regard in our surf club world. For many seasons Jenny was a patrolling member and also competed in the masters carnivals in various events. Such was her fighting spirit, that amongst her team mates she was affectionately known as the Energizer Bunny, because regardless of her problems, she just kept going and going. Noosa life member Scott Wilson, a teacher at Coolum State School, said: “Jenny worked with us for some five years on the teaching staff and was a dedicated lady, very popular and respected by all the staff.” Sport and education - a lady to be respected.

Noosa Croquet Club will hold a come-and-try day on Sunday, February 2, at 10am. Everyone is invited to come along and give it a go.

The first race for Noosa paddlers was the OC6 (six-man canoe) over a distance of 12km, which saw Noosa’s Golden Masters Men’s team (60-70 years) coming home first in their age group, securing a gold medal and the inaugural Anuenue Iron Trophy, donated by the Hawaiians paddlers for Golden Master teams. Race 3 of the same event had Noosa paddlers joining teams from other Australian clubs and competing in the Senior Master Mixed 12km event, finishing strongly to take the

bronze medal. The beautiful clear waters of Muri Beach lagoon was the venue for the next day’s sprint racing over 500m. Carrying on a strong tradition within the Noosa club, the Noosa Golden Masters Men’s team won gold in their age division after a very close race with a strong NZ team, crossing the line less than one second ahead. Again Noosa paddlers joined up with other Australian paddlers to contest the Senior Masters Mixed 500m event, coming home third in the final, securing another bronze medal. The big event was the Round Raro Relay, over a distance of 36km. This race was contested by the Noosa Senior Master Team of nine paddlers, and involved two or three paddlers ‘changing’ positions in the boat every 20 minutes. The change involves fresh paddlers jumping in the water from a support boat, catching the team canoe as it races past, and replacing pad-

dlers who exit the canoe on the other side, thus providing a continual flow of strong paddlers. Once again, the Noosa Men’s team finished extremely well, crossing the line in second position and securing a silver medal. During a day off between races, the Noosa team visited the local junior school, which had recently lost class rooms and learning materials in a fire. The Noosa team donated over $1000 worth of new books for the school and were thanked with a traditional dancing and singing ceremony by the children. Noosa teams are now back in training for the remainder of the 2013-2014 season, including the upcoming OC6 National Sprint Titles (World Qualifiers) at Lake Kawana, January 31 to February 2. Many of our Nippers also came “flaggedup” which was great to see. We are approaching the busiest time of the year for our Nippers with branch and state carnivals just a few weeks away. This season we have also doubled the number of Nippers attending carnivals in our U8 to U10 age groups and

Around the greens TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS CLUB For the first time we will be playing in the Gold, Silver and Bronze divisions of Super Challenge when our teams take to the greens on Saturday. Bronze division, men’s and ladies’, have played one round, with Gold and Silver yet to open their account. The new-look Gold team with Troy Rowley at the helm, should do our club proud with the potential to make the play-offs. Josh Anderson, a well credentialed junior from the Hervey Bay area, will be playing alongside top bowlers. The Silver and Bronze sides with the men and ladies are also rated highly. In all there will be 36 men and 14 ladies competing each week. The Gold side will be playing at home on Saturday. Robbo’s Day will be held on Sunday, February 9 with play starting at 9.15am. Our men’s A Grade singles and ladies’ fours championships have commenced. See notice boards for details. We enjoyed a friendly game against Noosa Heads recently as a warm up for the Super Challenge matches. NOOSA HEADS BOWLS CLUB With no Super Challenge contests being scheduled, due to the long weekend, our selectors put on an afternoon of serious practice matches on Saturday. The biggest winning margin among the men was scored by Bill Burkitt and Ron Wallish. Daphne Reed and Yvonne Walsh had a win in the ladies pairs, as did Jeanette Emery and Marie McCall. It’s back to the real competition next Saturday, with our ladies Silver side journeying to Pacific Paradise and the Bronze men and women playing Tewantin at home. The first staging of this year’s Bowls Revolution Open Pairs has drawn a capacity entry of 96 players to battle it out in the two- game format next Monday. There’s good prize money and good competition to be had on the first Monday of each month through to June. Second grade fared worse in the away game at Maroochydore. In a forgettable day we were bowled out twice for less than 100 in each innings to also have an outright defeat. At home against Glasshouse 3rd grade finally got the monkey off their back with a 100 run 1st innings wins against Glasshouse. A marathon effort by Phil Drescher picking 6/91 off 25 overs was well supported by Luke Anstey with 2/58. This is a good sign for improved performances for the remainder of the season. 5th grade continued their remarkable season with a come from behind win. After closely losing 1st innings last week, Burpengary were 0/38 overnight but were quickly skittled with Wayne Moore taking a 5 wicket haul and Matt Smalley and Charlie Chaplin picking up 2 each. The runs were then chased down with relative

ease with Gary Madsen (49) and Wayne Moore (41 n.o.) making short work of the 118 run target. This takes the 5ths to the top of the table with 3 rounds to go. The 5th grade one day final was on at Read Park on Australia Day. Unfortunately the boys couldn’t keep the momentum going. Buderim got away to a flyer with the bat before Matt Smalley pegged them back with 3 quick wickets. A change of pace to spin reaped rewards and Charlie Chaplin picked up 4 wickets and Gary Madsen two - including a

screamer of a catch from skipper Deon Baker, to have the visitors skittled for 124. This looked a very gettable target. However, a wicket on the very first ball of the Thunder innings didn’t help and no batsman could really get a start to some tight Buderim bowling. It ended up being a comfortable victory to the visitors with the Thunder being bundled out for 78, well short of the target. The two-day finals are now firmly in focus and there’s extra incentive to take out the final.
