First steps for Preps THE sound of nervous giggling, constant questions and some quiet sobs were heard across the City of Melton last week as thousands of youngsters enjoyed their first day at school. For little Audrey, 5, the first day at Prep and the chance to make new friends and learn how to read is something she has been looking forward to for months. However her mother Skye had mixed emotions. “I’m excited for her because she’s excited, but I’m a little bit nervous about the long days,” the Hillside mother said. With the commencement of school, police are also urging motorists to slow down to help protect the city’s most vulnerable road users. Reduced 40km/h and 60km/h speed zones are back in force and police are warning speeding drivers to obey the reduced speed limits or face hefty penalties. Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

Move in for homes MELTON South and Melton remain among the most affordable metropolitan suburbs in Melbourne according to the latest figures released by the Real Institute of Victoria. The statistics showed house prices in Melton South slumped to $220,000 in the December 2013 quarter while Melton’s media house price dropped slightly to $239,950. Prices in the nearby suburbs of Kurunjang and Melton West were a little higher – $280,000 and 276,000 respectively – while Brookfield reached $298,750.
However, there were positive signs for the City of Melton with Taylors Hill, Caroline Springs and Burnside Heights continuing to climb the real estate ladder with median prices reaching close to half a million dollars. Melton Barry Plant sales executive Ned Nikolic told Star that house prices in Melton and surrounding suburbs would remain affordable while there is still land readily available to purchase. Mr Nikolic said buyers could purchase an older home for as little as $200,000, while newer homes were likely to fetch $300,000.
He said while the figures may look grim, there were definite signs of improvement in the last quarter. “It’s a great time to buy ... with the interest rates so low, paying off a mortgage is better than renting,” Mr Nikolic said. “Buyers better get in while they can ... the future is looking positive.” Mr Nikolic encouraged investors and first home buyers to come back to Melton saying future developments were all selling points for the area. Overall Melbourne’s median house

price rose by more than 7 per cent in the final quarter of 2013, to a new high of $643,000. REIV chief executive officer Enzo Raimondo said that the increase was driven by several factors including “low interest rates, a record number of auctions, and an increase in million dollarplus sales”. “Sellers were also confident of making a sale with about 12,800 auctions held during these three months, an average of more than 1000 auctions a week.”

POLICE impounded two cars within 24 hours last week after burnouts were done right in front of them on two separate occasions, one with a baby in the back seat. Members from the Heavy Vehicle Unit intercepted a car at around 2.40pm on Monday on Bulmans Rd after the driver was observed doing a burnout in front of a patrol car in Melton West. A Victoria Police
spokesperson said the 26-yearold male driver also returned a positive Preliminary Oral Fluid Test and refused to accompany police for an Oral Fluid Test. “The man, from Hoppers Crossing, had his vehicle impounded on the spot and is expected to be charged on summons for a number of traffic related offences,” the spokesperson said. In another incident, Transit police in Altona intercepted a
vehicle after it was observed doing a burnout before leaving a car park on The Esplanade. When police approached the car to speak with the driver, they noticed a six-month old baby sitting in a car seat in the back seat. The man was also travelling with his partner. The 30-year-old Kingsbury man’s car was impounded for 30 days and he was expected to be charged on summons with traffic related offences.

A MELTON West photographer is making a name for himself by capturing the very essence of happiness - a newborn baby. Steve Butcher always loved taking photos but it wasn’t until 2012 that he realised his passion could indeed become a rewarding “hobbie-job” and that his work would warm the hearts of any new mum and dad. After taking photos of his newborn son, Lincoln, and his friend’s children and launching his Facebook page Still Motion Photography, word of mouth has spread like wildfire and Steve spends most of his week in the studio with proud parents and their new bub. “Ninety nine per cent has been word of mouth,” he told Star. “All I’ve done is take photos and put my work up ... and it’s avalanched from there.” Steve specialises in newborn photography with many of his shots illustrating babies sleeping in vintage settings or even hanging off a tree branch, cocooned in a warm blanket - all in the safety of the studio. “It’s challenging working with newborns, but it is also rewarding. “The parents are absolutely stoked when they see the photos, the response has been overwhelming.” “I always wanted to create a photo that people would be touched by.” And while the babies in his photos might look angelic and peaceful, Steve admits there is a lot of hard work to get them to that point with most shoots taking up to three hours. But he wouldn’t change it for a minute and with almost 2000 likes on his page, photography might one day become a career. “It’s happened so quickly, it’s been a whirlwind but it gives you a sense of worth.”

Go for green lights By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO THE long awaited Ferris Rd lights were switched on last week completing a major road project well ahead of schedule. Melton Mayor Bob Turner joined Minister for Planning Matthew Guy last Tuesday to turn on the traffic lights at the Western Freeway and Ferris Rd interchange. Mr Guy said the completed project would ensure the interchange operated more efficiently in the future.
“Ferris Rd carries 21,000 vehicles per day and is one of Melton’s most important roads as it links the Western Freeway, the Melton Highway and Gisborne-Melton Rd,” Mr Guy said. “This project has been completed in response to congestion at Ferris Rd, resulting in large volumes of westbound vehicles queuing on and exiting the Western Freeway during weekday afternoons, causing delays and traffic issues.”
Mr Guy said these safety problems have now been resolved with the installation of traffic lights and an extra right turn lane on the exit ramp which allows additional vehicle capacity and reduces the potential for accidents. Cr Turner said the community had been advocating for improvements at the intersection for years. “Our community has been very outspoken about this issue and council continued to push the State Government to improve road safety
at this major intersection that had been seeing a lot of congestion,” Cr Turner said. “We will continue to advocate on behalf of our residents for much needed transport, health and education infrastructure for our fast growing community.” Further works associated with the intersection improvements include asphalt resurfacing and line marking. The left turn lane on the exit ramp remains unchanged.
Living with a green edge AS PART of next month’s Sustainable Living Festival, Melton City Council is offering tours of the Melton Library and Learning Hub. Residents are invited to take part in the tours on Friday 14 February, between 2pm and 4pm to learn more about the building’s sustainable features. Mayor Bob Turner said the festival aimed to inspire and empower everyday Australians to accelerate the uptake of sustainable living. “Council is very proud to have achieved such a landmark, sustainable and energy-efficient building for our community,” Cr Turner said. “We hope that by learning more about our 5-star Green Star Library and Learning Hub residents will be empowered to take action in their own homes.” The Sustainable Living Festival will be held across Victoria between 8 and 23 February. The festival raises awareness and provides tools for change by showcasing leading solutions to ecological and social challenges. No bookings are required for the tour.

A girl beaten during a savage gang attack in Deer Park, who was unable to walk without assistance due to the extent of her injuries, returned to the scene of the crime last week to help police investigators. Her identity has been concealed at the request of police. 113789 Pictures: ALESHA CAPONE
Brave victim returns to gang attack scene By ALESHA CAPONE THE injured girlfriend of a man who was killed during a violent gang rampage in Deer Park returned to the crime scene to help police investigators last week. The woman, who had allegedly been savagely beaten by the intruders, could not walk without assistance due to the extent of her injuries. The woman – whose identity Star has chosen not to reveal at the request of police – was present when a gang of more than 10 armed males forced their way into the Billingham Rd house on Australia Day.
The men, who were wearing balaclavas, were carrying weapons believed to be possibly bats, poles or machetes when they arrived at around 10pm. The group confronted seven people inside the Deer Park home, trashing the abode and smashing a yellow ute parked outside the house, leaving three large blade marks gouged into its bonnet. A 20-year-old man from Diggers Rest, who went by the name Michael Ferrari, was killed during the attack. Two other people, a man and a woman, received medical treatment at the scene.
After the attack the gang fled into nearby parkland along Millbank Dve. The next day, a police dive crew searched the park’s creek and SES members combed the area for evidence. Police said they believe the incident was not random or raciallymotivated, and the people involved were known to each other. Officers said last Monday they took a number of people into custody in relation to the crime, but they have since been released without charge. On Tuesday after the gang attack,
two young men – who arrived at the scene to assist police – became agitated when they saw media gathered nearby. The pair yelled threats and swore, before throwing bottles and large chunks of glass at the journalists. The youngsters later returned to their vehicle, drove across a naturestrip and onto the footpath, where they spat upon two reporters before driving away. Anyone with information about the gang attack can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
THE latest TAC data has prompted a campaign calling on young drivers to make safety their priority when buying their first car. The How Safe is Your Car campaign will run for the rest of the summer holidays, as thousands of young drivers across the City of Melton scan the used car market for their first vehicle before commencing their studies or entering the workforce. The TAC’s latest serious injury crash statistics revealed six people died on Melton roads last year and a further 68 people were hospitalised for two weeks. Nineteen drivers spent more than 14 days in hospital after an accident. Overall, there was a 16 per cent drop in hospital admissions across the state. Assistant Treasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips said that while it was positive that the road toll and serious injuries were falling, further road trauma could be reduced if all young drivers drove cars with a four or five-star safety rating. “Vehicle safety has come a long way in recent years and people need to be aware that many modern safety features can be found in affordable second-hand cars,” Mr Rich-Phillips said. Mr Rich-Phillips said by using tools like howsafeisyourcar.com.au, young drivers and their parents could find safe and affordable vehicles in every car class. “We know safer cars save lives and that safer cars are available regardless of the buyer’s budget so it’s vital that people put safety ahead of all other considerations when buying a vehicle.”

STORY time sessions will be back on offer at Melton and Caroline Springs libraries from this week. The baby and preschool story time sessions run throughout school terms and provide children with an introduction to the world of books. City of Melton mayor Bob Turner said story time was a popular activity with families and provided a wonderful opportunity to foster a love of books and reading in young children. “There are many benefits of reading to children – reading aloud helps children learn to read and encourages them to keep learning and discovering new things,” Cr Turner said. “Story time can also improve your child’s imagination, communication skills and interaction with other children.” Activities during baby story time include activities like rhymes, singing, finger plays, books and an introduction to Auslan. The 30-minute sessions are held at Melton Library each Monday at 10am and at Caroline Springs Library on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10am.

Hearts open for Ajay By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO THE Melton community is once again being encouraged to open its hearts and support a worthy cause. After raising more than $8000 last year and attracting a crowd in excess of 500, Ajay’s Pizzeria, launched in honour of Ajay Psaila, will host the event again with organisers hoping to double last year’s success and raise much-needed funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. The family day began as a tribute to Ajay Psaila who died after a tragic accident in 2012. The nine-year-old spent a week in the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Children’s Hospital
1117399-LB06-14
before he passed away. Close family friend and Ajay Pizzeria staff member Colleen Downie said some of last year’s attractions included Michael Jackson impersonator Paul Rizzo, local dance groups, live auctions and market stalls. “Our goal this year is to double the monies raised and make Ajay’s Family Day 2014 bigger and more successful in achieving this goal and this is where we ask for your help,” Colleen said. Colleen told Star that while a number of local businesses have already jumped on board to support the cause, there is always room for more. Organisers are also collecting merchandise and vouchers
to sell or auction on the day. “Your donation will not only be beneficial to your company but will continue to help support the hard work and dedication shown by all at the Royal Children’s Hospital.” All of the monies raised on the day will be donated in full to the Royal Children’s Hospital. The event will be held on Sunday 23 March from 10am to 5pm at the outdoor Amphitheatre next to Melton IGA, Palmerston St, Melton. Members from Melton police and Melton CFA will attend. Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact Colleen on 0412 218 481.

REGIONAL HOME PRICES SHOOT UP THE median price of a home in regional Victoria reached a record high in the last three months of 2013. Statewide, the December quarter median house price for regional areas was $320,500, an increase of 2.6 per cent on the September quarter price of $312,500. But across the state there were huge variations in price growth with some areas increasing by more than 10 per cent while others fell. Median house prices in the three major centres - Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong - all grew and their prices

remain at their peaks. Bendigo was up 1.6 per cent on the September quarter, the highest growth of the three centres. Such growth reflects the strong price increases in Melbourne over this period, with buyers taking advantage of record low interest rates. But across Victoria it was a mixed story with economic conditions and local factors impacting on prices. In Queenscliff, for example, an area which is sought after by both retirees and holiday home buyers,
the median price was $687,000 - an increase of 13.6 per cent on the previous quarter. Among the other best performing areas were Ararat, where the December quarter median price of $179,750 was up 17.9 per cent on the September quarter, Colac-Otway where the increase was 8.1 per cent, Wellington Shire with 3.5 per cent and Wangaratta, with 7.3 per cent. By contrast the overall median house price for East Gippsland fell by 1.7 per cent, compared with the previous quarter, while Horsham’s fall was 7.7 per cent. There was a

2.2 per cent fall in Warrnambool. Medians include the highest sales as well as the lowest , which can push up the median price. But this does not necessarily mean all homes in the area will reach such heights. This is worth remembering for property owners who are using the medians to price their own house, They are a valuable starting point but many individual factors such as location, quality and size, for example, may mean a home is worth more, or less.

A Star Advertising Feature
Easing the way back to school MANY parents will experience a keen sense of relief at the start of a new school year. The long summer holiday can seem interminable and the return to routine is something both children and adults are often eager to embrace - although that’s not to say it is always easy. Starting or going back to school can present a range of challenges for children. Yet there are ways in which a parent can help a child to manage those challenges.
For children returning to or starting school, the first few days can be daunting. Communication is the key here so parents should make sure they talk openly with their child about any concerns they have and do their best to allay these fears. Show them the route they’ll walk to school and if time permits, attend school functions or summer fetes during the holidays so that they can refamiliarise themselves with the environment.
One of the biggest fears when going to school after the summer holidays is the prospect of returning to the classroom. To overcome this, parents should encourage children to continue their education at home. Some children love role-play games where they take on the role of a teacher so parents can help their children to create worksheets which they can complete and mark together?
Puzzles such as crosswords and word searches can also be useful ways to help them study over summer and are perfect for long journeys too. It can be tempting to let children run wild in the kitchen during the summer holidays but this will not only be bad for their diet but also for their routine. A child who has eaten their own weight in chocolate during the summer holidays won’t want to return to healthy packed lunches.
To address this problem, why not get children to help create their own lunches for when they’re off school? Find packed lunch ideas for kids with the child’s collaboration and help them understand the merits of a balanced diet. A few treats here and there won’t do any harm but by creating healthy packed lunches together it will be easier for them to settle back into school after the holidays.

Lions kings no more By ADEM SARICAOGLU A LITTLE more than 10 months ago, the Melton Lions were the kings of the SubDistrict Cricket jungle. It was officially party time over at MacPherson Park, as Melton knocked over Werribee by 68 runs to claim yet another VSDCA title. Fast-forward to the fortnight just gone at the very same venue with the same two foes doing battle, and the contrast between the two and their fortunes so far this summer is just about mind-boggling. An almost un-recognisable Melton side was given one of the biggest slaps any Lions first XI outfit has copped in quite some time on Saturday. Seven days earlier, the host crumbled with the bat and could only last 67.3 overs on its way to a measly 123, with only one batsman, John Varchione (35), posting a score beyond 20. In the 15 overs that followed late in the day, Werribee had already got half the job done, finishing the day’s play at 1/57. On Saturday the Tigers were in cruise control, with opener David Wolfe taking the Melton attack to task on his way to 110. Werribee only batted for 20 overs as it eas-
ily accounted for Melton, reaching 3/140 by the end of the 35th over. It was a result, as dramatic as it was, that no Sub-District pundit could have forecast prior to the start of the summer. And yet, based on what we’ve seen since the current season got underway all the way back in October, it came as no surprise. The Tigers have not lost a single game since going down to Melton in last season’s decider and are sitting two games clear on top of the ladder. Melton, on the other hand, has not tasted victory since early October, and has been completely luckless ever since star batsman and reigning Hatch Medallist, Mick Allen, broke his leg in last year’s Riddell District Football League grand final. The Lions are perched last on the table and six points behind Yarraville - the one club they have been able to knock off this season. The good news for Melton is there’s still time to end the season on a high, with three games still to come. It all begins this weekend with a winnable road clash at Sunshine, before the Lions round out their lowly season with clashes against Noble Park and Croydon.
A YOUNG Sydenham Hillside side could well sneak its way into the NWMCA’s George Luscombe Shield finals series over the coming month. The Storm is currently just two points outside the top four and will battle it out with Gladstone Park for fourth spot in the final two games of the home-and-away season. Despite its negative win-loss record, club chairman of selectors Greg Wilson has been impressed with how the Storm has managed to progress through its 4-6 summer to date. “We’re coming along quite well,” Wilson said. “We’ve got a lot of young kids in the side this year and we played a few of the top sides before Christmas. “But now we’re in a position where we’re chasing down a finals spot.” Sydenham Hillside’s star import from last summer, Sanahasa Fernando, has taken over as the Storm’s captain-coach this season after John Thrush moved on as coach at the end of the
ROCKBANK trainer Phonse Gatt’s most consistent nine-year-old Jet Laag/Junique mare Action Royale broke through for a well-deserved victory in the Oates Victoria Open Golf Pace for C1 class over 1609 metres at Beckley Park Geelong on last Monday. Driven by Emanuel Portelli, Action Royale led throughout from the pole to score from the heavily supported Lierre Noir (one/one at bell - three wide last lap) and All Aussie Star which followed the winner in a mile rate of 1-58.1. It was Action Royale’s 13th success in 110 outings.

2012/13 campaign. Though Fernando’s numbers with the bat this summer have not quite matched those of 12 months ago, Wilson said his impact as coach on the young Storm group has been immense. “He’s been fantastic as a coach,” Wilson said. “The progression of our young kids has been fantastic. “We’ve got two young boys (Dylan Knight and Reece Tompkins) from the under-16s playing in the firsts, and we’ve got a number of young guys playing in the firsts and seconds who are all doing really well, too.” The New Year began perfectly for the Storm with successive one-day wins over Buckley Park and the Clarkefield Brumbies - giving its finals aspirations a timely boost. Courtesy of a bye, Sydenham Hillside has been forced to sit out the past two weeks and has not played red-ball cricket since mid-December. With the Storm set to resume its summer this weekend in a two-day away clash with the lowly

BALLIANG part-owner/trainer Michael Armstrong scored an upset victory in the www.eventsgeelong.com.au Pace for C0 class over 2100 metres, when five-year-old P Forty Seven/Lil Sweet Art mare Gabbys Sweetheart greeted the judge at Supertab odds of $43.40. Making her second race appearance, Gabbys Sweetheart driven by Kate Gath enjoyed a lovely trip from gate three trailing the heavily backed favourite McRita (gate four), before finishing hard along the sprint lane to score by two metres in a rate of 2-00.1 from McRita and Bushi. THE Happy Australia Day Three-Year-Old Pace over 2100 metres at Geelong was certainly happy for Melton’s Ian Hunter partowner/trainer of The Gingerbreadman who came from near last to gain the day in a rate of 1-59.2. Driven by John Justice, The Gingerbreadman (Ponder/Classy Dream) starting from the extreme draw spent most of the race at the rear before being taken three wide in the last lap to follow both Bad Boy Hughie and Bad Boy Brad, with Vader leading from gate three. Making the home turn six wide, The Gingerbreadman ($28.10) motored to the wire, blousing Bad Boy Brad (Lance Justice) by 3.6 metres, with the hot favourite Givemeaspell third after trailing the pacemaker and using the sprint lane to no avail. ROCKBANK’S Sammy Chircop brought up two wins in succession this time in with four-year-old Union Guy/Paula Ido gelding Bad Business, taking out the Melges 24 Sailing World Championship Pace for C1 class over 2100 metres with Nathan Jack in the sulky. Taken back at the start from outside the front row, Bad Business bided his time mid-field in the moving line, before gaining a beaut ride home three wide on the back of Crazy Dave. Although wide on the final bend, Bad Business ran home strongly to defeat a game Crazy Dave and Driving Withtess which raced in the open from the bell. The mile rate 1-59. MELTON area winners at Warragul on Friday were: Bushi (Lance Justice), Steal A Sixpence (Graeme Lang) and Shakti Bromac (John Justice). MEETINGS for the week: Wednesday - Cobram/ Elmore, Thursday - Maryborough/Nyah @ Swan Hill, Friday - St Arnaud @ Melton, Saturday Melton (Victoria Derby), Sunday - Terang, Monday - Warragul, Tuesday - Mildura. Horses to follow: Sandys Boy, Heavenly Sister, Mister Coggins, Vox Populi, Dagati Image, Spacious Star, Bad Boy Cullen, Driving Withtess.
