SEDDON has become the City of Maribyrnong’s property hotspot. The Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s median house prices for the December 2013 quarter reveal the Seddon house median jumped 13 per cent from $650,000 to $733,500, making it one of the top 12 growth suburbs across metropolitan Melbourne. The increase has seen Seddon out-price Yarraville, which suffered a five per cent price drop in the last quarter to post a median of $705,000. Maribyrnong remains the most expensive suburb across the municipality despite recording less than 30 sales in the last three months of the year, with a double-storey home in the Edgewater estate being the highest selling property across the City of Maribyrnong for 2013. The five-bedroom, three-bathroom property along Cumberland Drive commanded a selling price of $2.15 million in April. Other REIV data shows Braybrook and Maidstone also experienced a slow quarter, with these
suburbs also selling less than 30 properties. There was no sales data for Tottenham. In comparison, Melbourne’s median house price rose by more than seven per cent in the final quarter of 2013 to a new high of $643,000. REIV CEO Enzo Raimondo said buyers were “out in force” during the final quarter of 2013, leading to a healthy average clearance rate of 70 per cent. “Low interest rates, a record number of auctions, and an increase in million dollar-plus sales all led to an impressive quarter for the market,” Mr Raimondo said. “Sellers were also confident of making a sale with about 12,800 auctions held during these three months, an average of more than a thousand auctions a week. “While auctions comprised a higher share of sales this quarter, there was stronger price growth for houses sold by private sale. “This has driven some of the price increases in the outer suburbs, where private sales are more popular.”

EARLY Childhood Management Services across Melbourne has joined Kidsafe’s Kids in Hot Cars campaign to help protect babies and small children from being left in life threatening situations. ECMS will place safety signs at the entrance of every service in the ECMS network reminding parents and carers not to leave their children in hot cars. The service has more than 27 centres across the West, including the Bulldogs Community Children’s Centre, Seaholme Kindergarten, St Albans East Preschool, Kealba Kindergarten, Mossfiel Children’s Centre in Hoppers Crossing and Brookside Preschool in Caroline Springs. Kidsafe CEO Melanie Courtney welcomed the partnership with Early Childhood Management Services, saying it provided an important and vital link in getting the Kids in Hot Cars safety message through at a grass roots level. During the recent heatwave in Victoria, a total 53 children were rescued after being left unattended in a car. Following a number of child deaths and several years of Kidsafe campaigning, Victorian legislation now makes leaving a child unattended in a car a criminal offence, with penalties ranging from a $2165 fine or three months in prison. “The temperature inside a parked car can be up to 20 to 30 degrees hotter than the outside temperature. Even leaving a window slightly open does little to cool the temperature inside the car,” Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Wendy Lovell said. “The message is clear - if you are travelling with a child in a car and you need to get out of the car, even for just one minute, make sure you take the child with you.” Information for parents and carers about the impact of leaving a child in a hot car is available on the Kidsafe website at www.kidsafevic.com. au and www.ecms.org.au

High cost of ‘clunkers’ By CHARLENE MACAULAY THE State Government is calling on young drivers to pick their first car wisely after the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) released its latest serious injury crash data. Three people died on the City of Maribyrnong’s roads last year and a further 79 were hospitalised with injuries. From that, 14 people were hospitalised for more than two weeks.
TAC statistics reveal that 18 to 25 year olds made up 14 serious injury claims, while 26 to 39 year olds accounted for 20. State-wide, the data revealed a 13 per cent drop in hospital admissions stemming from road accidents. Assistant Treasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips said that while it was positive that the road toll and serious injuries were falling, further road trauma could be reduced if all young drivers drove cars with a four-star or
five-star safety rating. Mr Rich-Phillips said getting Victorians into safer cars was a key action of the Victorian Government’s strategy to reduce road trauma, recognising that the state’s most inexperienced and vulnerable drivers were more likely to drive the oldest and least safe cars. “Vehicle safety has come a long way in recent years and people need to be aware that many modern safety features can be found in affordable
Baby Show
second-hand cars,” Mr Rich-Phillips said. Mr Rich-Phillips said by using tools like howsafeisyourcar.com. au, young drivers and their parents could find safe and affordable vehicles in every car class. “We know safer cars save lives and that safer cars are available regardless of the buyer’s budget so it’s vital that people put safety ahead of all other considerations when buying a vehicle.”

Protesters say rail removal crosses the line By CHARLENE MACAULAY A DISUSED railway line along the Maribyrnong River has scored a reprieve thanks to some dedicated locals. The railway spur line, which was built over a century ago to service industry along the riverfront from Footscray to Yarraville, was being removed by VicTrack last month when the Footscray Residents Action Group intervened. FRAG member Heather Horrocks tied herself to the railway
tracks in protest and halted works. “It’s about 100 years old, it’s no longer used, but it’s a very important part of Footscray’s history,” Ms Horrocks said. “For most residents, it’s part of the public open space here, it’s part of the heritage and we think it was worth going into bat for. “Footscray’s turning into a much cleaner, prettier place that doesn’t show the remnants of its industrial past.” FRAG appealed to Maribyrnong
City Council, which ordered VicTrack to reinstate any part of the track that had already been removed. “The disused but historic railway spur line along the Maribyrnong River is a remnant of the city’s industrial past and is of immense historical significance,” Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said. “As soon as the council became aware of the VicTrack works, it sought VicTrack’s agreement to halt all further removals and reinstate materials that had been removed.”
The council also outlined the importance of local community heritage groups being involved in any future discussion about these rail lines. VicTrack spokesman Jason Murray confirmed to Star that the railway lines would be reinstated last week. “There was a request from a group who run the (St Jerome’s Laneway) music festival to remove a tripping hazard, and we were looking to do that, but subsequently the council have decided that they didn’t want that done,” Mr Murray said.

THE State Government has awarded a $400 million contract to construct the maritime works package at the Port of Melbourne. State Ports Minister David Hodgett announced that McConnell Dowell has been selected to construct the new automotive wharf and waterside infrastructure at the Port of Melbourne’s Webb Dock. McConnell Dowell will also expedite the rebuilding of existing wharves at Webb Dock East, which will see Melbourne’s third international container terminal open by late 2016. “The design and construct contract will deliver improved
waterside infrastructure to Webb Dock including upgraded navigation aids and berth facilities,” Mr Hodgett said.“The contractor will build a new 920-metre wharf at Webb Dock West that will service the expanded, world-class automotive terminal. “The facility will consolidate the state’s automotive import and export industry by providing capacity to handle more than one million cars by 2040. “This announcement is another milestone for the $1.6 billion Port Capacity Project which, together with the Coalition Government’s support for a second container port at the
Port of Hastings, delivers Victoria the capacity to meet our growing trade demands.” McConnell Dowell will spend the next eight weeks preparing detailed technical and environmental management plans which must be approved prior to the commencement of works. The operators of the new international container terminal and the new automotive terminal are expected to be announced by mid-2014. The Port of Melbourne recorded an overall profit after tax of $65.9 million for 2012/13 against the background of a small decline in overall trade of 1.6 per cent on the previous year. Leon was fined $87 by Maribyrnong City Council for dropping off an elderly person at a bus stop. 113479 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI

Bus stop fine leaves Leon fuming By CHARLENE MACAULAY A WEST Footscray man has been left outraged after he was fined for dropping off an elderly person at a bus stop. Maribyrnong City Council fined Leon $87 after he dropped off an elderly friend at a bus stop along Seddon’s Victoria St in December last year. “I stopped at the bus stop for him to get out - it was only about 10 or 15 seconds - and they (the council) fined me,” he said. “I bought a rulebook (from VicRoads), and it says that
you’re not allowed to stop at the approach side of a bus stop - but I’m not actually on the approach side, I’m in the middle. “It doesn’t say in the rulebook that you’re not allowed to stop at a bus stop. “It’s strip shopping here, you can’t find a parking space. The nearest parking space would be two or three blocks away, and an old man or woman shouldn’t have to walk two or three blocks to get to a bus stop.” Leon plans to appeal the fine, but said he was also unimpressed with the appeals process.
“You can’t actually ring anybody, you have to send a letter in,” he said. “They make it really difficult for you to complain about it. In the meantime, you have to pay the fine, not knowing if they’ve accepted your appeal or not.” Director of Sustainable Development Nigel Higgins said the council was currently “assisting the resident with this matter”. “For safety reasons, parking is prohibited in bus stops at any time.”

By CHARLENE MACAULAY THE Rickshaw Run is making a comeback in 2014. Diners looking for a meal with a difference over the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival can hop on their own personal rickshaw for a six-course dash around Footscray to sample the best Vietnamese cuisine on offer. This year, Lauren Wambach from the Footscray Food Blog is organising the event. Ms Wambach is promising diners freshly shucked oysters, a selection of South and North Vietnamese soups and a special chargrilled pork with rice vermicelli dish as part of the menu. “It’s a fun and accessible way to experience Footscray, which is great for people who’ve never been there,” she said. “Even seasoned veterans will discover something new. “It’s the fourth year and it’s sold out every year, and it’s on track to sell out this year.” Ms Wambach is currently on the lookout for volunteers to run the rickshaws during the event. The Rickshaw Run is just one of the tasty morsels Maribyrnong City Council is offering as part of the Eat Drink Westside program for this year’s Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. Eat Drink Westside features nine unique events that show off the municipality’s multicultural heritage, including an Ethiopian dinner with traditional dance performances, an afternoon salon with French cuisine and a race around Footscray to find the ingredients for a Vietnam-

THROUGH most of the 20th century it seemed that gardeners had to make a choice - either have an entirely native landscape, or stick strictly to exotics. All that’s changed, however, as native plants have been tamed, developed and made more garden friendly. It’s easy now to have a garden that blends plants from all parts of the world, including Australia. While some native plants are renowned for being finicky and hard to get on with, others are very adaptable and will grow just about anywhere. Here are some tried and trusted favourites: Trees and shrubs - Bottlebrushes of all types are renowned for their toughness. They vary from tree size (e.g. Callistemon ‘Hannah Ray’) to the tiny (to 45cm) ‘Little John’ which has dark red flowers and blue-grey leaves. Ground cover - Fan flowers such as Scaevola spp have rich green leaves and triangular-shaped flowers in shades of blue, bluish-pink, mauve and white. They make good ground covers and look very effective draping over a bank or down the sides of a pot. Keep away from heavy frosts. Accent - Lomandra ‘Tanika’, an Australian bred, fineleafed, grassy clumper, is so tough and realiable it’s been exported to many parts of the world. Planted en masse, ‘Tanika’ creates a rippling ‘sea’ of narrow leaves.

Alstroemerias are a great Australian classic flowering plant.
· Climber
- Native clematis, Clematis aristata, is an Australian relative of the large-flowered, exotic clematis varieties that do so well in cool climate gardens. While the flowers of the native version are smaller, they have a delicate beauty that rivals the exotics - and the plants are much hardier. Female plants smother themselves with fluffy seed heads after flowering, which gives rise to the common name of ‘old man’s beard’. Give them a support to climb on or let them scramble to form a ground cover.
Caring for natives THESE choices will grow in a wide range of situations. Prune back after flowering to encourage new growth and feed a couple of times a year with a slow release fertiliser such as Acticote or Garden Gold for Natives. Yates Blood and Bone is good, too. If soil is heavy or stays wet after rainy periods, it’s a sensible precaution to spray a couple of times a year with Yates Anti Rot. Partners in aged planning A PARTNERSHIP between two leading Victorian organisations is set to improve access to crucial information for hundreds of older Victorians. The arrangement will see not-for-profit aged care provider Benetas work with State Trustees to educate clients, their families and staff about the importance of planning for aged care and finance management such as creating wills, nominating a Power of Attorney and estate planning. Benetas CEO Sandra Hills
said the partnership would help empower older Victorians by making important information more accessible. “These topics can be often be confronting and overwhelming to our clients and their families, particularly if someone comes into aged care in crisis,” Ms Hills said. “By working with State Trustees we will be able to support our clients and their families to better understand and access the information they need to make informed decisions.”
State Trustees CEO Craig Dent said the partnership with Benetas was reflective of the organisation’s commitment to supporting Victorians as they get older. “As one of the largest care providers in the state, Benetas is also an important partner to help us support regional Victorians and to help us strengthen our links through Footscray and beyond as we prepare to relocate our corporate headquarters in a few months.”

THIS is Lori our vet Dr Roslyn’s labrador puppy who will have her weight regularly kept in check. Many portly pets could do with a new year’s resolution to cut the kilos. The disturbing fact is that 30-40 per cent of pets are overweight. When in ideal body condition owners should be able to feel their pet’s ribs easily and see a definite ‘waist’. It is common for certain breeds such as Labradors and pugs to become overweight easily. If a pet is too chubby then owners need to consult their veterinary team for a weight loss program. After determining a pet’s target weight, vets will advise on how much to feed and schedule regular weigh-ins. To achieve weight loss owners need to cut out any left overs and avoid treats and fatty bones that contain lots of calories. A measured amount of low calorie food should be offered in two small meals. Prescription weight control diets
Ensure your pet has a happy and healthy new year by changing its diet. are fully balanced, filling for the pet and designed to achieve weight loss steadily. Exercise is also vital so aim for daily walks that increase in length as both owner and pet become fitter. Cats are more difficult to exercise but many love chasing toys around the house. The team at Hoppers Crossing Veterinary Clinic wish clients and their animals a happy new year as it celebrates its 20th year of caring for the area’s pets in 2014.
Car deaths within minutes IT TAKES less than six minutes for a pet to die an agonising death in a hot car. Each year the RSPCA receives hundreds of distress calls about animals, usually dogs, being left in cars during the hotter months. RSPCA Victoria is urging pet owners not to leave their dogs unattended in cars or on the back of utes this summer to avoid life threatening situations. On a 23 degree day, the inside of a car can reach more than 40 degrees. In this heat, a pet can die an agonising death in less than six minutes. RSPCA Victoria received 209 reports of animals left in vehicles last summer. Dogs are particularly at risk of overheating as they pant to

Children’s common pain complaints something parents should worry about, unless there are pain or balance issues. Children with diagnosed flatfoot deformity will have instability in the foot and therefore foot, arch, heel, or ankle pain. Excessive rolling inward of the ankles also often leads to lower back, hip, knee, or leg pain. If a child regularly complains of pain and it’s interfering with normal play and leading to inactivity, it should always be investigated by a podiatrist who is experienced with assessing and treating musculoskeletal issues, optimally a sports podiatrist. Pigeon toe and out toe The appearance of in-toeing (‘pigeon toed’) or out-toeing (‘duck feet’), may affect the ca-
pacity of a child to run, jump and balance well. These issues may be assisted during the developmental years and can be thoroughly checked by a sports podiatrist. Growing pains Non-specific growing pains in children and teenagers are a common complaint, often causing deep ache-like leg pain during the night. Specific inflammatory growing pains can be evident in the heel (Sever’s disease or calcaneal apophysitis) or at the knee (Osgood-schlatters disease). These are often due to overstrain of the growth plates of growing bones, particularly in very active kids. In such cases physical activity should be reduced and a sports

Shin pain Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), anterior leg pain and compartment syndrome, all commonly referred to as shin splints, are also quite common. Again these issues should be checked by a sports podiatrist and, with proper diagnosis, can often be easily addressed. SOME common observations or concerns about children’s feet and legs include flat feet, growing pains and shin pain. These are often of great concern to parents, says leading sports podiatrist Dr Paul Dowie from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics. Flat feet It’s a common misconception that the appearance of flat feet in children, is cause for concern. This is not always the case. The presence of flexible flat feet in children is usually painless and perfectly ‘normal’ in many cases. In very young children, the ‘fat pad’ in the arch of the foot may give an appearance of a flat foot but this is often not the case. The important thing to understand is that flat feet are not

THE Institute of Singing is proud to announce the opening of a second private studio in Tarneit under the direction of associate singing teacher Jenny Barboza. The performing arts school made a fantastic transition in 2013 with its relocation from Moonee Ponds to Keilor and in 2014 looks to make an even larger impact in the Western suburbs. Jenny commenced training, under the direction of principal singing teacher Nancy D’Agostino, at the age of 12 at the White Diamonds School of Modern Singing. She then started teaching there a decade later and at the Institute of Performing Arts. Last year she joined the staff at the Institute of Singing. Set to jump for cheer squad class IT’S hard to be humble when you can stunt, jump and tumble! Cheer Central is a dedicated cheerleading and hip hop program catering for competitive and recreational athletes. Its accredited coaches have trained hard and researched all the latest trends across the country and overseas. Cheerleading is one of Australia’s fastest growing sports, with Cheer Central’s programs offering explosive cheer, pom, hip hop, gymnastics, acrobatics, tumbling, high flying tosses and the visually exciting stunting routines that are now seen in many cheerleading movies. It takes skill, athleticism, strength and energy. There is so much to learn and it’s a great way to keep fit and be part of a team. Cheerleading’s popularity has hit a high with so many children and teenagers finding they “get
the bug” after just a couple of training sessions. Recreational Street Cheer Classes offer a combination of cheer and hip hop in a fresh, vibrant and fun atmosphere, while learning technique and skills. For the more serious cheerleader and or dancer, the competitive teams provide an exciting and challenging experience. Sophie Maconachie, who at just 11 has been participating for six years said: “The atmosphere at competitions is amazing. It is so much fun. “I love dance and gymnastics, and by doing Cheer I get to do both.” Cheer Central had great success in 2013, including bringing home a second and third place at the AASCF National Championships. Whether it’s just for fun, or for those looking for a challenge, contact Cheer Central on 0417 557 422 for further info and try out sessions.
Cheer Central cheerleaders are at the top of their game.

Plot your course If your New Year’s resolution was to get involved in a cooking course or class, the Yarraville Community Centre has some terrific, diverse ones on offer this year. Everything from learning how to make traditional Burek with homemade fillo pastry to the newest craze sweeping the world – the Cronut (that’s a cross between a croissant and a donut!) There’s even a class on how to make your own home brew. See what’s available at www.ycc.net.au

Piece of Cake I don’t know about you, but once I drag out my son’s lunchbox to begin the new school year, Christmas really DOES feel like a distant memory. I laugh now when I think of how times have changed since my own days at school. Back in the ’70s, the Food Police didn’t judge what you put in your child’s lunchbox. I was such a fussy eater as a kid, my poor mum would slip in the odd slice of chocolate cake, I suppose figuring it was better if I ate SOMETHING rather than nothing at all! It was also perfectly acceptable for kids to order dim sims, pies and donuts for lunch from the greasy spoon joint down the road. After school, my mum often made me an apricot jam tart, covered with lashings of coconut and served hot from the oven, cut into big wedges like pizza. None of this carrot sticks and hummus business! This floury, doughy tart remains one of my fondest childhood memories, though probably not the healthiest. Ah, naughty versus healthy. I like to think the recipe I’m featuring this week falls somewhere in between. This very simple, moist, magnificent cake makes a great ‘sometimes’ snack for the lunchbox, or for after school. And with two cups of grated carrot in it, surely it qualifies as a health food! Of course you can omit the walnuts if you like and replace them with a cup of sultanas.
CARROT CAKE 1 cup canola oil 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 ½ cups self raising flour 1 tsp bicarb soda 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon 2 cups firmly packed grated carrot 1 cup walnut crumbs Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius. Grease and line a 20cm cake pan. Combine oil, sugar and eggs in a bowl and whisk well. Sift flour, bicarb soda and cinnamon over the oil mixture. Stir gently. Add carrot and walnuts. Mix well. Spread mixture into pan and bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Cool ten minutes in pan before turning onto rack. Ice with cream cheese frosting (I simply add a few heaped tablespoons of cream cheese to regular vanilla icing).

Back to basics works for Baker By ADEM SARICAOGLU

’Dogs last chance By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Footscray United Cricket Club seems to be having a pretty good summer. Membership has almost doubled in the past year, numbers are very healthy on the training track, functions have been well-attended and even all the finances are in good working order. Unfortunately though, the story of Footscray United’s summer on the field has been far less uplifting. The Bulldogs are the last remaining winless club in Turf Cricket’s North Division after going down outright to Altona North by nine wickets this past fortnight. “It’s really contrasting to be honest, because we’ve had an excellent season off the field,” Bulldogs vice-captain Stuart Ainge told Star. “But at the same time, the first eleven has been terribly disappointing. “We can’t make a run and we’re getting rolled for below par scores week after
week,” he said. “The bowlers are doing a great job trying to defend (low totals), but the batting just lets us down every week.” Despite Footscray United’s poor run of form, the mood has remained upbeat down at Scovell Reserve. The Bulldogs have included a lot of variety into their training routines in an attempt to break the drought, including beach sessions, Twenty20 hit-outs and numerous net sessions with the bowling machine. But after the Altona North loss, Footscray United now has just two more chances to score that win it so desperately craves. Getting it won’t come easy though, as the Bulldogs are next scheduled to host third-placed Tullamarine in a two-dayer, beginning this weekend. Ainge said his Bulldogs are hoping they can at least score one win before the summer is out. “We don’t want to go through winless
so we’ll want to make sure we win one of them,” Ainge said. “Tullamarine are going pretty well but we’ve got a good record against them and we’ve got Keilor Park in the last round who are not that much better than us (currently 10th) on the ladder - so we hold our chances pretty good of at least getting one before we’re done.” Despite going in as the obvious underdog, Ainge believes Footscray United can knock off Tullamarine over the coming fortnight. “We think we’ve got a good enough team on paper to be competitive in this grade of cricket so we go into every game thinking we’re a chance,” he said. “We’re playing Tullamarine and we’ve had a reasonable record against them over the years, so we’re confident we’ll have a chance against them as well.”
YARRAVILLE Club’s Justin Baker spent much of Melbourne’s recent heatwave with a golf ball, a stocking and a stump. The 35-year-old was a frustrated batsman, having made three successive starts of 44, 52 and 27 and not going on with them. What Baker has been able to produce since that run of outs, though, has been simply stunning. In Yarraville Club’s second one-dayer of the New Year, on the Saturday after Melbourne sweltered through a historybreaking heatwave, Baker smashed 10 fours and four sixes on his way to 96. Seven days later against Airport West St Christopher’s and the red ball, Baker followed up with a knock of 110 that included 16 fours and one maximum. “Against Beaumaris I made 50-odd and then didn’t go on with that and was really upset with myself,” Baker explained. “So before the Keilor game I actually went back to basics, started looking through some of my old diaries of what I used to do when I was a kid and one of them was just a golf ball, a stocking and a stump, and I honestly went back to that. “I was doing that all through that 40-degree week and it seemed to pay off. I saw the ball a little bit better against Keilor and then continued it on
and now the basic things are just starting to click with me.” Baker recently stepped down as the Clubbers’ captaincoach, citing time as the main factor behind his decision to hand the reins over to teammate Emmett Bronca. However, Baker also admitted the dual role was beginning to drain him, both mentally and out in the middle. “I’d been in the role for six or so years and I’m getting to a point where I’ll be 36 at the end of this season and it’s probably the right time to step down and just concentrate on enjoying my own cricket,” he said. “I was starting to get to the point that I wasn’t really enjoying it that much and it was more of a job, whereas when I started it was something I really enjoyed. “When you’re captaincoaching it’s all about the team and not so much the personal side of things,” he said. “You put the other guys ahead of yourself and a lot of the time it’s about their needs and looking after their form. “So it’s been good to be able to get back to basics and just be able to concentrate on my own game.” On Saturday, Baker blasted an unbeaten 32 during the second innings of Yarraville Club’s win over Airport West St Christopher’s.
Bulldogs’ horror start costs dearly By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater suffered just its third loss of the Victorian Premier Cricket season on Saturday. The Bulldogs fell to Northcote by 162 runs at Bill Lawry Oval. After winning the toss and batting on day one, Northcote blasted 9/313 thanks to a brilliant century from Ben Abbatangelo and a hard fought 75 from Steven Taylor. Reeling in the total was always going to be hard work for the Bulldogs and the run chase got off to a horror start. Footscray lost its captain and gun opening batsman Dean Russ for just six,
with the score at 1/13. Anthony Barton and Travis Dean tried to steady the ship and were able to combine for a 36-run partnership before more wickets began to fall. Barton and Dean were both dismissed with the score at 1/49 and Shanuka Dissanayaka followed just four runs later. The collapse wasn’t finished though with Footscray’s chances of reaching the total all but over when Michael Hill was also dismissed for just six. With the score at 5/62, the Bulldogs’ lower order tried its best to build partnerships with Mitchell Winter-Irving (27),
Jake Haberfield (24) and Hamish WinterIrving (17) digging in at the crease. However, the pressure proved too great and Footscray’s innings eventually came to a close with the score at 151 in the 54th over. Liam Scammell was the best of the Northcote bowlers, taking 5/33 while Marcus Stoinis and Chas Keogh finished with two wickets each. The result had Footscray relinquish top spot on the ladder to St Kilda. The Bulldogs are now in second and will take on 13th placed Dandenong this weekend.

Mitchell’s winning streak Doghouse In the
AFTER a brilliant year on the athletics track, Morgan Mitchell was named the Don Deeble Rising Star Award winner for 2012/13. Mitchell impressed the competition’s judges with her outstanding sporting achievements, which included making the Australian Under 19 Athletics Squad and being selected as a member of the senior national 4x400 squad to prepare for the Commonwealth Games, World Relay Championships, World Championships and the Olympic Games in Rio. Mitchell is the fastest female 400 metre runner in Victoria in both senior and junior competition and the second fastest in Australia. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award is run by the Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club and sponsored by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Each month, one nominee receives $1000 towards achieving their sporting goals before the top four athletes are invited back for the competition’s grand final. As the overall winner, Mitchell took home a cheque for $5000 to help her reach her future sporting goals. “I just want to thank all the sponsors and everyone involved with the award,” Mitchell said. “I really appreciate everything they have done for me.
I didn’t expect to win because all the guys in the final were so good. “I’m just really excited and with all the trips I have got coming up, it is a huge help.” Mitchell also thanked her coach, Peter Burke, for the hard work he has done in helping her get to the top. “I have been working with him for 10 years coming up in March/April and he is the best,” Mitchell said. “He has done everything for me. He has taken me to a lot of my training sessions. He has been there when I have been injured. I really respect him and owe everything to him. The best thing about him is that he doesn’t just care for me. He takes time for everyone in the club (Western Athletics). He is like family now.” Also on the night, three cheques for $2000 were presented to the joint runners-up of the award. They were Dejan Vasiljevic (basketball), Nathan Pellissier (table tennis) and Aaron Wain (taekwondo). The action didn’t end there with AFL legend David Parkin on hand as the guest speaker. Parkin gave an enthralling account of his time in the AFL world and the importance of providing support for young athletes.

Cordy takes role at the top GREAT to see Brian Cordy taking a role at the Footscray VFL side in 2014. “Toby” was a very good player in his day (124 games) and if you talk to those that played with him, they will always talk about him as a great team man. His background of coaching in Geelong at TAC Cup and local level plus at Geelong College will be of great benefit. His role is to oversee the coaching staff on match days and to share his experience and knowledge to the playing group. GOOD to see some local WRFL faces signed to the Bulldogs including Jesse Fortune (Glenorden), Jase Perkins (Port Colts), Todd Finco (Albion) Christian Elliot ande Michael Fogarty (Spotswood). All five had the talent to make it at VFL level and their local clubs can only benefit from the experience they will bring back. Both Werribee and Williamstown also have a pathway for local players to be part of their clubs so there has never been more opportunities for players to step to the next level. THE Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club past players day is coming up this Saturday at Hogans Road when the seniors will take on Old Mentonians. Rodney Malcolm Hogg spoke at the club last weekend and from all reports went down a treat. The fact I work with Hoggy each week on SEN, it does not come as a surprise, as he is a very funny man. Past players like myself. Stuart Broad and Fawed Ahmed can enjoy a barbecue lunch and a few cold ales at a very reasonable price. The Hoppers Sports Club Awards night is coming up on 22 February at the Racing Club which I am proud to be hosting once again. For bookings and details contact Darren Hellman on 0413 607 645. CLEARANCES have opened in all footy competitions and now we find out the real from the unreal. There is so much tripe bandied about at this time of the year it is not funny. Can’t wait to sort the wheat from the chaff. THE 13th Annual Peter Bunworth Memorial Match between Hoppers Crossing and Wyndhamvale again proved to be a tense last-man-standing affair. After a slow start, the Vales finished with 114 from their 20 overs which most thought was about 20 runs short of what would be required. In the chase, Hoppers lost regular wickets due to the wicket keeping low, poor shot selection and three stupid run-outs to slump to 9/86 before ‘Grimace’ Mitchell 53 not out and ‘Puff Diddy’ Dowling 20 not out got Hoppers over the line. Hoppers now lead 7-6 in the overall standings in what was a great day in honour of a great man. Shaun Mould (Mouldy) was the stand-out player for the Vales while Grimace got the job done for Hoppers.
