Baby Isabella couldn’t wait to get into the world...
First flush of youth BABY Isabella was in such a hurry to get into the world that she could not wait for her parents Mato and Marina Posavac to head off for the hospital – or even leave their St Albans house. The couple’s third child was born in their toilet about 4.30am on Wednesday 23 January after a labour of about just two hours. “No one can believe it,” Ms Posavac said. The mother-of-three said her contractions started to come every 10 minutes about 10pm and she called the midwife later on in the evening, who said to phone again when they were closer to three or four minutes apart. The house was in darkness and the couple’s two sons, nine-year-old Nicholas and three-year-old Jakob, were in bed when she awoke about 2.30am.
A photo taken as paramedics arrived on the scene, shortly after Isabella was born. 113888 Picture: MATO POSAVAC Ms Posavac said she decided to call the midwife later in the morning because the boys, her husband and
mother-in-law were fast asleep and Sunshine Hospital is “just around the corner”. However, Ms Posavac also felt a need to visit the bathroom. But when she sat on the toilet, the unexpected happened – Isabella had decided this was her moment. “Then I was like, ‘oh my gosh’,” Ms Posavac said. “I sort of grabbed her and I gave one big push and that was it. “I heard her crying so I thought, ‘that means she’s breathing’.” The surprised mother remembers holding onto her newborn as she opened the toilet door and called her husband. “I thought no way would the baby be born that quickly, when the boys took six to seven hours,” Ms Posavac said.
“But she had other plans.” Mr Posavac called paramedics, who arrived and cut the umbilical cord before taking Ms Posavac to hospital to treat anaemia after she lost a lot of blood.

“I think I was still in shock a couple of days later,” Mr Posavac said. “It was amazing that she gave birth by herself.” When she was born, little Isabella was 50cm long, weighed 3.6 kilos and her head’s circumference was 36cm. Her oldest brother Nicholas suggested they name her Isabella, because his mother is a fan of the Twilight movies which features a main character named Bella.

Police, Sheriff set to lay down the law Convictions taste bad By ALESHA CAPONE
POLICE, Brimbank City Council staff and Sheriff’s officers have announced they will step up joint operations across Sunshine’s CBD in response to anti-social behaviour and non-payment of fines. Last week Brimbank police Inspector Chris Gilbert said efforts would be intensified especially around Clarke St and Sun Crescent. He said a recent joint operation in Sunshine detected 16 people with more than 150 outstanding warrants worth more than $71,000. Sergeant Murray Trudel from the Brimbank Safer Communities Task-
force said that since August police have been undertaking extra highvisible patrols in Sunshine’s main streets which has led to a drop in crime. “The crime figures we have had since August have been tremendous – we’ve had some really good results,” he said. “Our main focus is for people on the streets in Sunshine to feel safe if you see people misbehaving and drinking in the streets, you don’t feel safe. “The other target we’re reducing is crimes against the person – so robbery, assaults.” Sgt Trudel said Sunshine traders
and residents would see even greater impact in the coming 12 months. “We know it’s not an overnight fix and this is going to be a sustained effort,” he said. President of the Sunshine Business Association (SBA) Bruce White said around August last year he wrote a letter to police voicing concerns about anti-social behaviour within the Sunshine CBD’s southern precinct. Mr White said in response, police efforts – such as increased foot patrols – have been “fantastic”. Mr White said he believed the construction of the Regional Rail Link project had possibly displaced
some people, who traditionally gathered at train stations closer to the city – such as Footscray – into Sunshine. But Mr White said Sunshine’s traders, along with government groups and philanthropic organisations, wanted to help out these groups – hopefully during the next two to three months. “We’re bringing together group of people in service area so that we can work around their social issues and get them some assistance,” he said. “It’s not just about issuing fines, it’s about social issues, educational issues and all these things in the mix to find a solution.”
FIVE Brimbank food businesses have been listed on a government website of eateries prosecuted for dodgy practices. The Department of Health’s Register of Food and Safety Convictions shows the five outlets were convicted in court between November 2012 and October 2013. Out of the five locations, the store which copped the heaviest penalty was a grocery shop in Alfrieda St, St Albans. The shop’s proprietor was convicted of several offences last year and fined $30,000. The Department of Health’s Register of Food and Safety Convictions lists all offences committed under the Victorian Food Act since 1 July 2010.

Victim’s brave return By ALESHA CAPONE THE injured girlfriend of a man who was killed during a violent gang rampage in Deer Park returned to the crime scene to help police investigators last week. The woman, who had allegedly been savagely beaten by the intruders, could not walk without assistance due to the extent of her injuries. The woman – whose identity Star has chosen not to reveal at the request of police – was present when a gang of more than 10 armed males forced their way into the Billingham Rd house on Australia Day.
The men, who were wearing balaclavas, were carrying weapons believed to be possibly bats, poles or machetes when they arrived at around 10pm. The group confronted seven people inside the Deer Park home, trashing the abode and smashing a yellow ute parked outside the house, leaving three large blade marks gouged into its bonnet. A 20-year-old man from Diggers Rest, who went by the name Michael Ferrari, was killed during the attack. Two other people, a man and a woman, received medical treatment at the scene.
After the attack the gang fled into nearby parkland along Millbank Drive. The next day, a police dive crew searched the park’s creek and SES members combed the area for evidence. Police said they believe the incident was not random or raciallymotivated, and the people involved were known to each other. Officers said last Monday they took a number of people into custody in relation to the crime, but they have since been released without charge. On Tuesday after the gang attack,
two young men – who arrived at the scene to assist police – became agitated when they saw media gathered nearby. The pair yelled threats and swore, before throwing bottles and large chunks of glass at the journalists. The youngsters later returned to their vehicle, drove across a naturestrip and onto the footpath, where they spat upon two reporters before driving away. Anyone with information about the gang attack can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Crash hotspot By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK has logged the highest number of TAC claims requiring acute hospitalisation among municipalities in the West, according to new figures. Last week the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) released a report showing more than 140 claims in Brimbank which required acute hospitalisation in the 12 months to June 2013. Wyndham recorded more than 130 claims, followed by Moonee Valley with more than 105, Melton at less than 70, Maribyrnong on 65 and Hobsons Bay with 50. However, although Brimbank recorded the largest num-
ber of claims, the data showed an improvement when compared to the previous 12 months. In the year to June 2012, there were more than 190 TAC claims in Brimbank resulting in acute hospitalisation - almost 25 per cent higher than the 2013 claim rate. The TAC statistics also revealed five people died on Brimbank’s roads in the 12 months to June 2013, compared to nine during 2012 and 10 throughout 2011. All the victims who died in Brimbank during the latest period were males aged between five and 15, including two motorcyclists and two pedestrians. Among those injured on the area’s roads during the first six
months of 2013, more than 30 were drivers. Another seven people were passengers, six motorcyclists, five pedestrians and one cyclist. The most common age bracket in Brimbank for road injuries was the 40 to 59 group, accounting for 19 of the 53 victims. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said officers would focus on speeding, drink and drug driving, using mobile phones and not wearing seat belts. “Everyone has the right to travel on the roads safely, not those drivers who believe that it’s acceptable to break speed limits in order to get where they want to go just a few minutes sooner,” he said.

By ALESHA CAPONE YOUNG Lily Gallus is a good sport who is following in her father’s footsteps to help disadvantaged children. The 11-year-old is the daughter of Keilor East resident Michael Gallus, a primary school teacher who established the Footys4all Foundation. The non-for-profit group delivers new footballs, rugby balls, basketballs and netballs to disadvantaged children. Within 12 months of operation, the foundation has sent out more than 6000 balls across Australia and internationally. “I help promote Footys4all a bit. I’m on some social media websites, I help out with clinics and with distribution,” Lily said. Among her tasks at Footys4all sports clinics is helping to set up handball targets and pump up balls. “Probably what I enjoy most is just seeing how much fun kids have with footy,” Lily said. The youngster, who is also a captain at Keilor Heights Primary School, plays basketball and competes in gymnastics during her spare time. “I know how much sport has impacted on my life, like in basketball it teaches you teamwork, sharing, respect and sportsmanship,” Lily said. Lily recently accompanied her father on a trip to Sydney to meet the Australian Assistant Treasurer Arthur Sinodinos and the Australian National Children’s commissioner Megan Mitchell. “She’s been going around Aus-

KEILOR resident Stephanie will be kept busy balancing her acting career with school this year. Stephanie, who has started Year 12 at Gilson College in Taylors Hill, also studies acting at Screen Actors Australia. During 2013, the talented teenager was cast as a dancer in the television show ‘Neighbours’. She has also appeared in short films including ‘Youth’ directed by Tess Hutson, ‘Inspirdaily’ directed by Casey Kukolja and a Havoc music video. Now aged 17, Stephanie said she first fell in love with acting when she starred in a school show during Year 7. “What I enjoy about acting is that you can become someone else and tell a story to provoke emotional reactions in people and see how they react,” she said. “My ultimate ambition would be to travel to LA or anywhere in America and be in films.” Stephanie said she was overwhelmed to be cast in ‘Neighbours’. “When I first heard that I’d got into ‘Neighbours’, I screamed and Mum said, ‘What’s wrong with you?’” she said. Stephanie said she was nervous at her very first audition, but now greatly enjoyed this aspect of the industry. “I love to audition. I love learning dialogue and being able to portray it to someone who is watching,” she said. When tryng out a role in ‘Youth’, Stephanie was asked

Shorten slams cuts By ALESHA CAPONE
Back to school
OPPOSITION Leader Bill Shorten has condemned the Federal Government for terminating more than $600,000 in funding which had been set aside for volunteer and community groups across the West. As revealed in Star last week, several organisations in the Brimbank, Melton, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay municipalities are set to lose their funding from the Building Multicultural Communities Program (BMCP). The BMCP grants had been announced in the national budget by the previous Labor Government.
BACKPACKS were dusted off, uniforms ironed and stationery re-stocked as thousands of students across Brimbank and Melton prepared to head back into the classroom last week. Among the thousands returning for the first school term of 2014 were twins Laura, 9, and William, 9. They had plenty of good advice for their four-year-old brother Benjamin, who is looking forward to starting at Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI kindergarten. 113778
However, the Federal Government has since sent letters to many clubs to say their funding has been cancelled. Mr Shorten, who is also the Maribyrnong MP, said two groups in his electorate had originally been awarded funds under the BMCP. The Vietnamese-Chinese Elderly Association in the West, based in St Albans, had been granted $5000 for IT and office equipment. The Moonee Valley Toy Library has also been allocated almost $4000 to help set up a second branch. “The Abbott Government cuts to fully budgeted and approved grants for community
organisations are cruel and undermine the tremendous work of volunteer community organisations,” Mr Shorten said. “The Abbott Government has betrayed community groups, many of whom work with the less fortunate and are integral to building inclusive and harmonious communities.” “Funding was secured by organisations through a detailed application and fully funded grants process. A spokesperson for Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews said the funds had been terminated because the “government is committed to reviewing spending to ensure it is aligned with priorities”.
Fires spark arson warning By ALESHA CAPONE AUTHORITIES have warned arsonists to be aware their activities are illegal and dangerous, following a series of fires in Brimbank and Melton. Detectives are investigating after three blazes began near the Calder Freeway on Friday 24 January during a day of extreme heat. The fires, at Calder Park, Taylors Lakes and Diggers Rest, all started within 30 minutes of each other, between
• • • • •
10.30am and 11am. Brimbank police Inspector Chris Gilbert said CFA crews quickly contained the blazes. He said arson chemists would assist detectives to determine the cause of the fires and any links between them. The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) has announced it will join forces with police, the CFA and Parks Victoria this summer to monitor deliberately-lit fires. DEPI compliance manager,
Murray Rohde, said campers sometimes also failed to realise they were not allowed to light fires on high-risk days. Mr Rohde said almost 100 fires, which occurred during the last financial year, started out as campfires or barbecues. Detective Senior Sergeant Jeff Maher said both arson and recklessly lit fires could incur serious penalties. Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity near or before fires can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Growing concerns SOME common observations or concerns about children’s feet and legs include flat feet, growing pains and shin pain. These are often of great concern to parents, says leading sports podiatrist Dr Christina Pulvirenti from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics. Flat feet It’s a common misconception that the appearance of flat feet in children is cause for concern. This is not always the case. The presence of flexible flat feet in children is usually painless and perfectly ‘normal’ in many cases. In very young children, the ‘fat pad’ in the arch of the foot may give an appearance of a flat foot but this is often not the case. Flat feet are not something parents should worry about unless there are pain or balance issues. Children with diagnosed flatfoot deformity will have instability in the foot and therefore foot, arch, heel or ankle pain. If a child regularly complains of pain and it’s interfering with normal play and leading to inactivity, it should always be investigated by a podiatrist. Pigeon toe and out toe The appearance of in-toeing (‘pigeon toed’) or out-toeing (‘duck feet’), may affect the capacity of a child to run, jump and balance well. These issues may be assisted during the developmental years and can be thoroughly checked by a sports podiatrist. Growing pains Non-specific growing pains
Take care of those little feet by visiting your local Foot and Leg Pain Clinic. in children and teenagers are a common complaint, often causing deep ache-like leg pain during the night. Specific inflammatory growing pains can be evident in the heel (Sever’s disease or calcaneal apophysitis) or at the knee (Osgood-schlatters disease). These are often due to overstrain of the growth plates of growing bones, particularly in very active kids. In such cases physical activity should be reduced and a sports podiatrist consulted as soon as possible. With correct management, sporting activities can be continued.
Shin pain Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), anterior leg pain and compartment syndrome, all commonly referred to as shin splints, are also quite common. Again these issues should be checked by a sports podiatrist and, with proper diagnosis, can often be easily addressed. Dr Pulvirenti at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics in Cairnlea, Werribee and Moonee Ponds or Coburg can be consulted. Visitors who mention this article when booking can get $50 off initial consultations. Proud of peak performance AVONDALE Dance Studio recently celebrated its 20th year of teaching dance and performance to young people. Miss Helen began the school in 1993 and is very proud of the positive achievements she has contributed into the lives of young people over the years. A.D.S has always been about creating the all-round dancer/ performer in styles of jazz, contemporary, classical and tap. REGIONAL HOME PRICES SHOOT UP THE median price of a home in regional Victoria reached a record high in the last three months of 2013. Statewide, the December quarter median house price for regional areas was $320,500, an increase of 2.6 per cent on the September quarter price of $312,500. But across the state there were huge variations in price growth with some areas increasing by more than 10 per cent while others fell. Median house prices in the three major centres - Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong - all grew and their prices
remain at their peaks. Bendigo was up 1.6 per cent on the September quarter, the highest growth of the three centres. Such growth reflects the strong price increases in Melbourne over this period, with buyers taking advantage of record low interest rates. But across Victoria it was a mixed story with economic conditions and local factors impacting on prices. In Queenscliff, for example, an area which is sought after by both retirees and holiday home buyers,
the median price was $687,000 - an increase of 13.6 per cent on the previous quarter. Among the other best performing areas were Ararat, where the December quarter median price of $179,750 was up 17.9 per cent on the September quarter, Colac-Otway where the increase was 8.1 per cent, Wellington Shire with 3.5 per cent and Wangaratta, with 7.3 per cent. By contrast the overall median house price for East Gippsland fell by 1.7 per cent, compared with the previous quarter, while Horsham’s fall was 7.7 per cent. There was a
2.2 per cent fall in Warrnambool. Medians include the highest sales as well as the lowest , which can push up the median price. But this does not necessarily mean all homes in the area will reach such heights. This is worth remembering for property owners who are using the medians to price their own house, They are a valuable starting point but many individual factors such as location, quality and size, for example, may mean a home is worth more, or less.

THE Institute of Singing is proud to announce the opening of a second private studio in Tarneit under the direction of associate singing teacher Jenny Barboza. The performing arts school made a fantastic transition in 2013 with its relocation from Moonee Ponds to Keilor and in 2014 looks to make an even larger impact in the Western suburbs. Jenny commenced training, under the direction of principal singing teacher Nancy D’Agostino, at the age of 12 at the White Diamonds School of Modern Singing. She then started teaching there a decade later and at the Institute of Performing Arts. Last year she joined the staff at the Institute of Many students from the Institute of Singing have Singing. gone on to do big things. Over the past 25 years Nancy has taught thousands of students to sing and also artist development. “The last 25 years has been both rewarding and progressive in so many ways. Gifts of love for Valentine’s Day have become tradition.
EVERY year, the 14th of February has millions across the world presenting their loved ones with candy, flowers, chocolates and gifts. In many countries, restaurants and eateries are filled with couples eager to celebrate their relationship and the joy of their togetherness through delicious cuisines. St Valentine’s Day has roots in several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages. One of the earliest popular symbols of Valentine’s Day is Cupid, the Roman god of love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow. Several theories surround the history of Valentine’s Day. Many believe 300 years after the death of Jesus Christ, the Roman emperors still demanded that everyone believe in the Roman gods. Valentine, a Christian priest, had been thrown into prison for his teachings. On 14 February, Valentine was beheaded, not only because he was a Christian, but also because he had performed a miracle. He supposedly cured the jailer’s daughter of her blindness. The night before he was executed, he wrote the jailer’s daughter a farewell letter, signing it “From Your Valentine.” Another legend tells us that this same Valentine, well-loved by all, received notes to his jail cell from children and friends who missed him.
Have you ever wondered how Valentine’s Day came about? Another Valentine was an Italian bishop who lived at about the same time, AD 200. He was imprisoned because he secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman emperor. Some legends say he was burned at the stake. The custom of choosing a sweetheart on this date spread through Europe in the Middle Ages, and then to the early American colonies. Throughout the ages, people also believed that birds picked their mates on 14 February.
In 496 AD, Saint Pope Gelasius I declared 14 February as “Valentine’s Day”. Although it’s not an official holiday, most Americans observe this day. Whatever the odd mixture of origins, St Valentine’s Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day that you show your friend or loved one that you care. You can send candy to someone you think is special. Or you can send roses, the flower of love. Most people send their “valentine” a greeting card named after the notes that St Valentine received in jail.

Piece of Cake I don’t know about you, but once I drag out my son’s lunchbox to begin the new school year, Christmas really DOES feel like a distant memory. I laugh now when I think of how times have changed since my own days at school. Back in the ’70s, the Food Police didn’t judge what you put in your child’s lunchbox. I was such a fussy eater as a kid, my poor mum would slip in the odd slice of chocolate cake, I suppose figuring it was better if I ate SOMETHING rather than nothing at all! It was also perfectly acceptable for kids to order dim sims, pies and donuts for lunch from the greasy spoon joint down the road. After school, my mum often made me an apricot jam tart, covered with lashings of coconut and served hot from the oven, cut into big wedges like pizza. None of this carrot sticks and hummus business! This floury, doughy tart remains one of my fondest childhood memories, though probably not the healthiest.
CARROT CAKE 1 cup canola oil 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 ½ cups self raising flour 1 tsp bicarb soda 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon 2 cups firmly packed grated carrot 1 cup walnut crumbs Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius. Grease and line a 20cm cake pan. Combine oil, sugar and eggs in a bowl and whisk well. Sift flour, bicarb soda and cinnamon over the oil mixture. Stir gently. Add carrot and walnuts. Mix well. Spread mixture into pan and bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Cool ten minutes in pan before turning onto rack. Ice with cream cheese frosting (I simply add a few heaped tablespoons of cream cheese to regular vanilla icing).
Ah, naughty versus healthy. I like to think the recipe I’m featuring this week falls somewhere in between. This very simple, moist, magnificent cake makes a great ‘sometimes’ snack for the lunchbox, or for after school. And with two cups of grated carrot in it, surely it qualifies as a health food! Of course you can omit the walnuts if you like and replace them with a cup of sultanas.

Crows make ’em count By LIAM TWOMEY THE future is looking bright for Sunshine after the club achieved its best Hatch results since 2011. The Crows made a shaky start to the tournament, dropping their opening two games to Williamstown and Yarraville. However, a victory against Altona in round three sparked a fight back which saw Sunshine go on to defeat Melton and push eventual finalist Roxburgh Park in a hard-fought clash. The club’s final game against Werribee was called off because of the heat. Hatch and first XI coach Mark Brown was rapt with the hard work his players put in. “We played some quality sides in the first two games and I think the boys were given a bit of a wake up call,” he said. “I think it is the first time since 2011 that the Sunshine Cricket Club Hatch team has got more than one win. “People have congratulated me but at the end of the day it really has nothing to do with me. It is all about the boys and how they have handled themselves. The big kick for me, as coach, is to look at their stats after the carnival. Hopefully everybody goes well and we can continue to see that improvement.” The results continue what has been a positive year for Sunshine in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. With Brown taking over the top job in the off-season, the Crows have reached a 3-6 win/loss record and are certain to improve on their bottom of the ladder showing in 2012/13. With the first XI still an outside chance of qualifying for finals, Brown is encouraging his players to continue their improvement in the final part of the season. “We are going to push as hard as

Kane Twentyman has been impressive with the ball since taking over the captaincy at Sunshine. 112665 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI we can,” Brown said. “We have spoken about a couple of things that are letting us down and one of them is bowling extras. “The bowlers are under pressure but if we can limit those extras it will
be a big difference. “Another one, and I put my hand up for this, is hitting singles. I’m timing drives to fielders where the good sides, they look for ones with soft hands. “Other than that, all the KPIs I had
for this year, bar maidens, they are all ahead of where we were last year. “That reflects in the win/loss ratio as well. We are up and about and really want to push and see where we can take it.”
FOOTSCRAY Edgewater suffered just its third loss of the Victorian Premier Cricket season on Saturday. The Bulldogs fell to Northcote by 162 runs at Bill Lawry Oval. After winning the toss and batting on day one, Northcote blasted 9/313 thanks to a brilliant century from Ben Abbatangelo and a hard fought 75 from Steven Taylor. Reeling in the total was always going to be hard work for the Bulldogs and the run chase got off to a horror start. Footscray lost its captain and gun opening batsman Dean Russ for just six, with the score at 1/13. Anthony Barton and Travis Dean tried to steady the ship and were able to combine for a 36-run partnership before more wickets began to fall. Barton and Dean were both dismissed with the score at 1/49 and Shanuka Dissanayaka followed just four runs later. The collapse wasn’t finished though with Footscray’s chances of reaching the total all but over when Michael Hill was also dismissed for just six. With the score at 5/62, the Bulldogs’ lower order tried its best to build partnerships with Mitchell Winter-Irving (27), Jake Haberfield (24) and Hamish WinterIrving (17) digging in at the crease. However, the pressure proved too great and Footscray’s innings eventually came to a close with the score at 151 in the 54th over. Liam Scammell was the best of the Northcote bowlers, taking 5/33 while Marcus Stoinis and Chas Keogh finished with two wickets each. The result had Footscray relinquish top spot on the ladder to St Kilda. The Bulldogs are now in second and will take on 13th placed Dandenong this weekend.
Storm’s hot summer By ADEM SARICAOGLU A YOUNG Sydenham Hillside side could well sneak its way into the NWMCA’s George Luscombe Shield finals series over the coming month. The Storm is currently just two points outside the top four and will battle it out with Gladstone Park for fourth spot in the final two games of the home-and-away season. Despite its negative winloss record, club chairman of selectors Greg Wilson has been impressed with how the Storm has managed to progress through its 4-6 summer to date. “We’re coming along quite well,” Wilson said. “We’ve got a lot of young kids in the side this year and we played a few of the top sides before Christmas. “But now we’re in a position where we’re chasing down a finals spot.”
Sydenham Hillside’s star import from last summer, Sanahasa Fernando, has taken over as the Storm’s captaincoach this season after John Thrush moved on as coach at the end of the 2012/13 campaign. Though Fernando’s numbers with the bat this summer have not quite matched those of 12 months ago, Wilson said his impact as coach on the young Storm group has been immense. “He’s been fantastic as a coach,” Wilson said. “The progression of our young kids has been fantastic. “We’ve got two young boys (Dylan Knight and Reece Tompkins) from the under-16s playing in the firsts, and we’ve got a number of young guys playing in the firsts and seconds who are all doing really well, too.” The New Year began per-
fectly for the Storm with successive one-day wins over Buckley Park and the Clarkefield Brumbies - giving its finals aspirations a timely boost. Courtesy of a bye, Sydenham Hillside has been forced to sit out the past two weeks and has not played red-ball cricket since mid-December. With the Storm set to resume its summer this weekend in a two-day away clash with the lowly Brumbies, Wilson is confident the two-week break will not halt the team’s momentum. “I think it was good because we’ve got a lot of young guys who have played representative cricket over the last few weeks, so it’s good to give them a bit of a break,” Wilson said. “Especially with the hot weather we’ve had, it was just a good opportunity to freshen the guys up.”

Exum confirmed last week he will nominate for the 2014 NBA draft, bypassing the American College Basketball system. The 18-year-old has also signed with American sports agent Rob Pelinka of Landmark Sports. Pelinka’s other clients include NBA great Kobe Bryant and James Harden of the Houston Rockets. In a statement made to ESPN, Exum and his parents, Cecil and Desiree said: “We are excited to be working with Landmark Sports. AFTER a brilliant year on the athletics track, Morgan Mitchell was named the Don Deeble Rising Star Award winner for 2012/13. Mitchell impressed the competition’s judges with her outstanding sporting achievements, which included making the Australian Under 19 Athletics Squad and being selected as a member of the senior national 4x400 squad to prepare for the Commonwealth Games, World Relay Championships, World Championships and the Olympic Games in Rio. Mitchell is the fastest female 400 metre runner in Victoria in both senior and junior competition and the second fastest in Australia. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award is run by the Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club and sponsored by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Each month, one nominee receives $1000 towards achieving their sporting goals before the top four athletes are invited back for the competition’s grand final. As the overall winner, Mitchell took home a cheque for $5000 to help her reach her future sporting goals. “I just want to thank all the sponsors and everyone involved with the award,” Mitchell said. “I really appreciate everything they have done for me.
I didn’t expect to win because all the guys in the final were so good. “I’m just really excited and with all the trips I have got coming up, it is a huge help.” Mitchell also thanked her coach, Peter Burke, for the hard work he has done in helping her get to the top. “I have been working with him for 10 years coming up in March/April and he is the best,” Mitchell said. “He has done everything for me. He has taken me to a lot of my training sessions. He has been there when I have been injured. I really respect him and owe everything to him. The best thing about him is that he doesn’t just care for me. He takes time for everyone in the club (Western Athletics). He is like family now.” Also on the night, three cheques for $2000 were presented to the joint runners-up of the award. They were Dejan Vasiljevic (basketball), Nathan Pellissier (table tennis) and Aaron Wain (taekwondo). The action didn’t end there with AFL legend David Parkin on hand as the guest speaker. Parkin gave an enthralling account of his time in the AFL world and the importance of providing support for young athletes.

Oz Day with a bang
KEVIN HILLIER
Cordy takes role at the top GREAT to see Brian Cordy taking a role at the Footscray VFL side in 2014. “Toby” was a very good player in his day (124 games) and if you talk to those that played with him, they will always talk about him as a great team man. His background of coaching in Geelong at TAC Cup and local level plus at Geelong College will be of great benefit. His role is to oversee the coaching staff on match days and to share his experience and knowledge to the playing group.

Group points to need for change By ADEM SARICAOGLU ESSENDON District Football League general manager Marc Turri has joined a 10-person working group charged with assessing the merits of introducing a player points system for Victorian local football. The group will look at the growing rate of player payments within the local game and the effect they have on club sustainability both on and off the field. “It’s just a working group that’s
going to look at different player point systems that currently exist and whether we can come up with a system that’s going to be applicable for Victorian football, both metropolitan and country,” Turri explained. “Some individual leagues across Victoria do have a player points system already and you’ve also got the SANFL (South Australia) who have a state-wide player points system. “So we’re going to have a look at the range of systems out there, as-
sess their strengths and weaknesses and make a final decision on whether it’s worthwhile implementing it in Victorian football.” Turri said the EDFL and its clubs had planned to review the potential for a player points system as soon as 2015, but has since backed the AFL Victoria push for state-wide reform. “The EDFL clubs as a group have voted in favour of investigating a player points system,” Turri said. “That’s obviously separate to
adopting one but there’s certainly enough support out there to at least look at it, and look at the benefits with the view to potentially taking it on board. “It’s certainly something we’re keen to have a look at and keen to see what impact it can have in terms of reducing costs on clubs.” Turri said controlling club costs would ease pressure on volunteers and revenue-raising measures on clubs.

GOOD to see some local WRFL faces signed to the Bulldogs including Jesse Fortune (Glenorden), Jase Perkins (Port Colts), Todd Finco (Albion) Christian Elliot ande Michael Fogarty (Spotswood). All five had the talent to make it at VFL level and their local clubs can only benefit from the experience they will bring back. Both Werribee and Williamstown also have a pathway for local players to be part of their clubs so there has never been more opportunities for players to step to the next level. THE Wyndham Suns is another new club in the area with its home ground at Goddard Reserve in Tarneit. The club used to be based at Westbourne College as Old Westbourne. The launch of the club and registration day will take place this Sunday 9 February at the Tarneit Community Centre from 1.30pm. The club will be fielding sides in the WRFL under9s through to under-16s with a Youth Girls and Women’s team as well. The seniors will play in the VAFA. Their senior coach is Phillip Ballis and Brad Gilham will be coaching the under19s. Like all clubs these days they are active on social media, so check them out. THE Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club past players day is coming up this Saturday at Hogans Road when the seniors will take on Old Mentonians. Rodney Malcolm Hogg spoke at the club last weekend and from all reports went down a treat. The fact I work with Hoggy each week on SEN, it does not come as a surprise, as he is a very funny man. Past players like myself. Stuart Broad and Fawed Ahmed can enjoy a barbecue lunch and a few cold ales at a very reasonable price. The Hoppers Sports Club Awards night is coming up on 22 February at the Racing Club which I am proud to be hosting once again. For bookings and details contact Darren Hellman on 0413 607 645. CLEARANCES have opened in all footy competitions and now we find out the real from the unreal. There is so much tripe bandied about at this time of the year it is not funny. Can’t wait to sort the wheat from the chaff. THE 13th Annual Peter Bunworth Memorial Match between Hoppers Crossing and Wyndhamvale again proved to be a tense last-man-standing affair. After a slow start, the Vales finished with 114 from their 20 overs which most thought was about 20 runs short of what would be required. In the chase, Hoppers lost regular wickets due to the wicket keeping low, poor shot selection and three stupid run-outs to slump to 9/86 before ‘Grimace’ Mitchell 53 not out and ‘Puff Diddy’ Dowling 20 not out got Hoppers over the line. Hoppers now lead 7-6 in the overall standings in what was a great day in honour of a great man. Shaun Mould (Mouldy) was the stand-out player for the Vales while Grimace got the job done for Hoppers.

WHILE the action may have been hot on Rod Laver Arena, there were also plenty of winners being hit at the Sunshine Park Tennis Club last week. Sunshine Park hosted its annual Australia Day Community Event at the J.R. Parsons Reserve with huge crowds flocking to join in the fun. As well as plenty of activities on the court, there was also a jumping castle, games zone, face painting and a cupcake competition. To cap off the outstanding day of celebrations there was a fireworks display just after 9pm. In total, 350 people attended the celebrations during the day while a staggering 500 were on hand for the night session. Sunshine Park Tennis Club vice-president Tony Busuttil was rapt with the success of the event. “Feedback from the community has, so far, been overwhelmingly positive and the club is excited to have provided the locals with both the opportunity to play tennis and attend a fun filled community event,” he said. “The fireworks extravaganza was the perfect finale to a fun day and the cheering crowd were appreciative of the show in hope that it could be repeated in years to come.”
