By XAVIER SMERDON A POLICE crackdown on one of Wyndham’s fastest rising crimes has seen a spate of people fined and two men arrested following a daring chase on foot. Last week during a five day operation police were using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to nab drivers who had committed petrol drive-offs in the Wyndham area. On Tuesday at around 1.45pm they scanned the plates of a Toyota Aurion travelling on Fairbairn Rd in Laverton North and were notified that the car had an expired registration. Just as they were about to pull the vehicle over, the driver attempted to flee, speeding away from police. But his escape was short lived as he slammed into the gutter of a roundabout, causing the front left tyre of the car to almost fly off and the front axle

Exclusive to be snapped in two. As police caught up with the vehicle, the driver and his passenger, both aged in their early 20s, jumped out of the car and attempted to run away on foot. They were quickly caught by police however, before the driver admitted that the car was stolen. Leading Senior Constable Mick Campbell apprehended the passenger and told Star the car was believed to have been stolen out of the Central Square car park in Altona. “As we put the lights on they’ve taken off before hitting the kerb and snapping the axle,” Ldng Sen Const Campbell said. “The doors then flew open and they split up with. My partner chased the

driver and I chased the passenger into the nearby park.” Sergeant Mick Welsh said in December last year there had been 82 petrol drive-offs reported in Wyndham alone and so far in 2014 there had been a 13.5 per cent reported increase in the crime. “The petrol drive-offs are pushing our reports of theft up,” Sgt Welsh said. “We see them a fair bit, but today is a good result because no one was injured and we’ve got two people in custody.” A staff member at a Laverton petrol station who did not want to be identified told Star that petrol drive-offs were almost a daily occurrence. “Sometimes the people come back because they just forgot to pay for it, but most of the time it’s people stealing something they don’t think they should

have to pay for, even though everyone else does,” the staff member said. Police Inspector Damien Christensen told Star number plate thefts and vehicle thefts could be directly linked with the theft of petrol. “It’s pretty much guaranteed that if your plates or your vehicle is stolen it’s being used for no good,” Insp Christensen said. “A recent Vic Health survey found that Wyndham has the highest percentage of people commuting for two hours a day, 26.2 per cent, more than double the Victorian average of 11.6 per cent. “Unfortunately this is a bit like a tsunami suburb. We have a big wave of vehicles leaving every day at about 8am and then returning at about 4 or 5pm, and that is a contributing factor to the rise of drive-offs.”

AFTER living in Wyndham his entire life, Australian pop music royalty Anthony Callea is selling his house. Callea became a household name after being the runner-up in the 2004 season of Australian Idol and his debut single The Prayer is still the fastest selling single by an Australian artist. Late last month he posted a link to his house’s profile on a real estate website on social networking site Twitter. “Know someone looking for a house in Point Cook? Well, I have the perfect one for you in beautiful Sanctuary Lakes,” Callea said.

I WAS driving down Derrimut Rd the other day and my eight year-old asked a very good question from his back seat vantage point as we passed the site of the Leisure and Events Centre. He asked: “What the hell is that?” After telling him that hell is not a preferred word for an eight year-old, I had to laugh, because that was exactly what I was thinking. I hope it will be a facility that the entire community will be proud of, and can make use of, but at the moment it looks like nothing on earth. The old pool was a major headache from the start, and did not last as long as it should have, so I trust every ‘i’ is being dotted and ‘t’ crossed, on this new project. The official launch of the new Rec Centre took place last week with the usual photo opportunity. The one remaining sports facility that needs to be upgraded for its future is Chirnside Park, home of the Werribee Football Club and the Werribee Cricket Club. There is a plan on the table, I hope it sees the light of day soon. Yes I work for the club, but even if I didn’t, I think it is long overdue for a total facelift. INTERESTING email I received last week regarding a local establishment that seems to be making a habit of selling goods that are past their use by date. I am not sure if this is illegal but it certainly is not good business. I know some places have a special display where you can choose to buy products that are past their best before date and that is your choice. So does the Health Department do random checks to monitor this? I have no idea. Surely the council would have some jurisdiction here. Let me know your thoughts. I HAVE to congratulate John and Pauline Nicol on their 52nd wedding anniversary. They are very close friends of my family but more than that they are very special human beings. Anyone who knows them would acknowledge what I am writing. Not far behind them are Paul and Pat Revell who have clocked up 47 years. Last seen dancing to the band at the Australian Day celebrations at the Vic Uni Athletics track I know Paul and Pat are going well. Together we’ll beat Kathleen’s cancer By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM businesses have come together to support a local mother who is battling an aggressive form of cancer. Sue Briffa and Karlee Chapple wrote a heartfelt letter to businesses asking them to do what they could to

help their friend Kathleen Thomas. “Three years ago Kathleen was diagnosed with breast cancer, she fought hard with chemo, radiation and surgery for nearly two years, and we thought her battle was won,” the letter said. “Unfortunately in October 2013, it was discovered that the cancer

had returned and was far more aggressive. She is now diagnosed with secondary breast cancer, which has spread to her bones and blood stream. “Kathleen has fought hard to fight this terminal disease but now more than ever needs the help of the community.”

A fund-raising day was held at the Werribee Italian Sports Club on Sunday and it was hoped that around $5000 would be raised. Blue Key Properties were the main sponsors of the day but more than 30 other businesses also contributed.

Kickstarting a comic career By XAVIER SMERDON IN A world where only the strongest, smartest and fastest survive, one Tarneit resident is hoping to make his mark. Shaun Paulet has been a comic book fan since he was 10-years-old when his mother bought him his first copy of X Men. “I would never read so my mum bribed me by buying me a comic book and it’s cost me a fortune ever since,” Mr Paulet said. Almost every room in his house is now graced by framed comic book artwork and figurines of his favourite characters.

Now Mr Paulet is hoping that his own creation will become the next thing that his fellow comic book lovers cannot wait to get their hands on. About 12 months ago he started developing his own comic book series, Xtreme Champion Tournament, which he hopes will make it into stores by next month. The series combines Mr Paulet’s love of history and science fiction, while including a healthy dose of brutality. “I’m a bit of a history buff, I love Greek mythology, and I thought how can I bring those kinds of sto-

ries together and make them relevant now,” he said. “I’m also a huge fan of Ultimate Fighting Championships, where people basically fight without rules, so I figured that the next step of fighting to the death isn’t that far away.” Before he knew it Mr Paulet had created the idea behind his new series, where clones of ancient warriors are created to fight in a gladiator style setting. To help him get his characters out of his head and onto the pages of a comic book, Mr Paulet turned to crowd funding website Kickstarter,

where people can make donations in return for limited edition copies of Xtreme Champion Tournament. With only six pages left before the first book is finished, Mr Paulet is hoping that he will receive enough donations to make his dream a reality. “In just over a week I’ve received $1400 in pledges,” he said. “My ultimate goal is to get it into every comic book store.” For more information on Mr Paulet’s Kickstarter campaign visit www.kickstarter.com/projects/2067957354/xtreme-champion-tournament

A SOUTH Australian couple have taken a leap of faith by selling their business and moving to Wyndham to help the municipality’s poor and disadvantaged people. Tim and Di Size moved to Wyndham three weeks ago after completing their training to become Salvation Army Assistant Officers. Upon finishing the training they were notified that they would be sent to Wyndham to assist local Salvation Army Captain, Lance Jeffrey. “Tim and I owned a music store and the call went out that people were needed, so we sold our business and went to training college and this is our first placement,” Di said. “We’ve been part of the Salvation Army for six years. We moved pretty quickly once we got involved and we just wanted to do more.” The couple said that Wyndham was considered one of the most challenging municipalities to serve because of its rapid population growth. “I think the biggest challenge amongst the community is loneliness,” Di said. “There are a lot of people looking to belong, so this will be an area of focus for us.” “We want to make this a friendlier and more welcoming community,” Tim added. The couple have already been faced with one of the biggest issues in Wyndham, do-

equipped and prepared to respond to that,” Tim said. “We’re here to help people in whatever way we can,” he said.

POLICE are searching for a man that allegedly exposed himself to a woman on the Werribee line train late last year. He is believed to have touched himself inappropriately between South Kensington and Laverton train stations around 1.30pm on 17 November. A Crime Stoppers spokesperson said the man was last seen exiting the train at Laverton before boarding another city-bound train. Police have released images of a man whom they believe may be able to assist them in their enquiries. He is described as Mediterranean in appearance, between 20 to 30 years old, 183cm tall with an athletic build, brown gelled hair and an olive complexion. He was wearing a blue T-shirt and shorts, large black aviator sunglasses, white socks, runners and was carrying a black gym bag. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Busted for burnouts By XAVIER SMERDON POLICE impounded two cars within 24 hours last week after burnouts were done right in front of them on two separate occasions, one with a baby in the back seat. Members from the Heavy Vehicle Unit intercepted a car at around 2.40pm on Monday on Bulmans Road after the driver was observed doing a burnout in front of a patrol car in Melton West.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the 26-year-old male driver also returned a positive Preliminary Oral Fluid Test and refused to accompany police for an Oral Fluid Test. “The man, from Hoppers Crossing, had his vehicle impounded on the spot and is expected to be charged on summons for a number of traffic related offences,” the spokesperson said. In another incident, Transit police in Altona intercepted a

vehicle after it was observed doing a burnout before leaving a car park on The Esplanade. When police approached the car to speak with the driver, they noticed a six-month old baby sitting in a car seat in the back seat. The man was also travelling with his partner. The 30-year-old Kingsbury man’s car was impounded for 30 days and he was expected to be charged on summons with traffic related offences.

Derek’s on a life saving ride By XAVIER SMERDON A WYNDHAM grandfather who was given a second chance at life is giving back to the community and calling on other people to save a life too. Derek Claridge was given two weeks to live in 2000 after having six grafts installed in his heart following years of living with heart disease. His mother died from the same disease when she was only 46-years-old. Luckily for Mr Carlidge he was given a life-saving heart transplant, and he has never looked back. In order to qualify for the transplant, Mr Claridge was

Limited Stock

told he needed to improve his health and fitness. He took up bike riding which managed to postpone the need for a transplant for five years. Now he will be using his new found love of cycling to raise awareness for the need for people to sign up as organ donors. In March along with 24 other riders he will take part in the inaugural Tour De Transplant, which will raise money for The Alfred hospital. The Tarneit resident said he was grateful for every extra day he had been given. “It’s been amazing,” Mr Carlidge said.

www.werribeehyundai.com.au

“Life is so precious I think we should grab every opportunity to extend it and push through the tough times. “I’ve got four grandchildren now that I would never have seen if it wasn’t for this transplant.” He has since competed in the World Transplant Games and in 2004 he rode 2700 kilometres from Perth to Adelaide to take part in the National Transplant Games. More than $40,000 has been raised by the Tour De Transplant so far. For more information visit tourdetransplant.gofundraise. com.au

EARLY Childhood Management Services across Melbourne has joined Kidsafe’s Kids in Hot Cars campaign to help protect babies and small children from being left in life threatening situations. ECMS will place safety signs at the entrance of every service in the ECMS network reminding parents and carers not to leave their children in hot cars. The service has more than 27 centres across the West, including the Bulldogs Community Children’s Centre, Seaholme Kindergarten, St Albans

East Preschool, Kealba Kindergarten, Mossfiel Children’s Centre in Hoppers Crossing and Brookside Preschool in Caroline Springs. Kidsafe CEO Melanie Courtney welcomed the partnership with Early Childhood Management Services, saying it provided an important and vital link in getting the Kids in Hot Cars safety message through at a grass roots level. During the recent heatwave in Victoria, a total 53 children were rescued after being left unattended in a car. Following a number of child deaths and several years of Kidsafe campaigning, Victorian

legislation now makes leaving a child unattended in a car a criminal offence, with penalties ranging from a $2165 fine or three months in prison. “The temperature inside a parked car can be up to 20 to 30 degrees hotter than the outside temperature. Even leaving a window slightly open does little to cool the temperature inside the car,” Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Wendy Lovell said. Information for parents and carers about the impact of leaving a child in a hot car is available on the Kidsafe website at www.kidsafevic.com.au and www.ecms.org.au

International speaker and television personality, Cheri Peters, speaks to audiences around the world in prisons, rehab centers, schools, churches and on the streets. She presents a confronting, hope-filled message about a God who is crazy about you, who longs to heal you, and who delights in your recovery from every kind of dysfunction, abuse or addiction. She ought to know, abused and unwanted as a child, a drug user by 11, pregnant at 13 and living on the streets of Los Angeles.

AS A racer Romy the greyhound was less than good, but she will always be a winner in his owner Fran’s eyes. Back when she was known as Snazzy Fizzle, Romy lost all three of the races she was entered in. Luckily, Fran Stivey from Werribee had decided she wanted a new best friend and adopted Romy through the Greyhound Adoption Program in Seymour. “She was so good right from the word go,” Ms Stivey said. “She’s a very loving dog. A lot of people are worried they will be too big, but she is just so gentle and affectionate,” she said. Ms Stivey contacted Star after it was revealed that a Werribee vet had created an online petition that had gone viral, calling on the exportation of greyhounds to China to be stopped. “I thought that was just dreadful. I wanted to gather them all up,” she said. Animal Welfare Manager at Greyhound Racing Victoria who run the Greyhound Adoption Program, Dr Linda Beer, told Star the dogs made excellent pets. “There are a lot of misconceptions that they are athletic and need a lot of exercise when in fact the opposite is true,” Dr Beer said. “They are a sprint athlete, so they run very fast for about 30 to 40 seconds and then they need to have a lay down. In general they are very lazy.” Dr Beer said all dogs re-

Safer cars urged By YASEMIN TALAT THE latest Transport Accident Commission data has prompted a new campaign calling young drivers to put safety on top of their checklist when buying a new car. The How Safe is Your Car campaign will run over the rest of the summer holiday period as thousands of young drivers in Victoria and across Wyndham scan the car market looking for the ideal ride before commencing study or entering the workforce. The campaign was launched last week along with the latest TAC injury crash data in Wyndham.

The data revealed a 56 per cent drop in fatalities in the 12 months to November 2013 compared to the same period in 2012. There was also a 23 percent drop in hospital admissions stemming from road accidents in the 2013 financial year. Assistant Treasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips said that while it was positive that the road toll and serious injuries were falling, further road trauma could be reduced if young drivers drove cars with a four or five star safety rating. “Vehicle safety has come a long way in recent years and people need to be aware that

many modern safety features can be found in affordable second-hand cars,” Mr RichPhillips said. Mr Rich-Phillips said getting Victorians into safer cars was a key action of the Victorian Government’s strategy to reduce road trauma, recognising that the state’s most inexperienced and vulnerable drivers were more likely to drive the oldest and least safe cars. “We know safer cars save lives and that safer cars are available regardless of the buyer’s budget so it’s vital the people put safety ahead of all other considerations when buying a vehicle,” he said.

A WYNDHAM VALE father and his two children who star in an Australian action film are preparing to walk the red carpet for the movie this weekend. The movie The Ninja Immovable Heart, was created by Geelong local Rob Baard, and was also filmed and financed in Geelong. Adrian Trait, of Wyndham Vale, will play a policeman in the action movie and his two children Sarah, 14 and Aaron, 11 star as homeless children who are rescued by the heroes in the movie. Mr Trait, who was chosen for the role by chance, has never

acted before but said he enjoyed the experience. “It’s not something I thought about doing or even looked into doing, it sort of found me I guess,” Mr Trait said. “It’s completely different to anything I’ve ever done,” he said. “It was exciting and it was very full on, there was a lot happening.” The movie was shot in various locations across Geelong between February and July last year and involved 278 people working on the project. Mr Trait said his children had a much bigger role than him and were very excited. “They were very excited to

be part of the movie,” he said. “They are kind of like little mini stars amongst their school friends, they are absolutely loving it.” Mr Trait said he was happy to support his primary school friend Mr Baard, who is the director, writer and producer of The Ninja franchise which includes books, toy sets, clothing and an upcoming second movie. The Ninja Immovable Heart is the first feature film in the series of films carrying the title of the hero character “The Ninja” and will premiere at Village Cinemas Geelong on Saturday 8 February. Anger over army dumping By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM charity shop workers are regularly being subjected to verbal abuse by people who illegally dump rubbish in front of their stores, a staff member has said. Last week workers at the Salvation Army Op Shop in Synnott St Werribee were left a bad Australia Day present when they went to open the store on Tuesday morning. Piles of old clothes, broken furniture and even large cabinets and wardrobes were left on the footpath outside of the store. A staff member told Star that the dumped rubbish was almost a daily occurrence and it was never sold by the store. “We catch people doing it almost every single morning,” the staff member said. “People will sometimes pull up with a ute full of smelly old clothes and they put it right in front of the sign saying it’s illegal to dump items here.” The staff member said Wyndham Council removed the rubbish which could often contain dangerous items such as syringes. Patrons leaving nearby nightclubs had even been known to urinate on the items on their way home. To make matters worse, the staff member said workers were often yelled at by the rubbish dumpers. “We have cameras here that catch their registration numbers so we report that straight to the council and they can then fine them,” the staff member said. “If I catch someone doing

dumping it? I don’t think so.” The Salvation Army Op Shop sells items in their store which helps them fund services that help poor people in the community. Donations should be made during business hours from Monday to Saturday.

FEBRUARY marks the start of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and this weekend one of the biggest events on the calendar will kick off one of the many fund-raisers to support the campaign. The 2014 Brazilian Butterfly Queen of the Lake will be held on Sunday 9 February with many locals gearing up to take part. Point Cook resident Alisha Vella is a big supporter of charity fun runs and is already doing her second fun run for the fortnight. “I’m looking forward to

being a part of it and being amongst all the other females there running it,” Ms Vella said. Ms Vella said the runs were a perfect way to stay fit while also raising awareness for many important organisations like Ovarian Cancer Australia. “For me, doing these runs is to try and improve my time while at the same time raising awareness for the different charities and running with other people,” she said. “It’s the atmosphere on the day that motivates you.” Organisers of the event are encouraging all women to join the event and be ‘queen’ for the day, and little princesses

Golf day in full swing

Are you ready to begin your career in Childcare?

By YASEMIN TALAT WERRIBEE not-for-profit organisation Mambourin is hoping to score a hole in one in its upcoming charity golf day in March, encouraging the support of local businesses along the way. The 2014 Mambourin Charity Golf Day will be held at Sanctuary Lakes golf course and the planning is currently in full swing. Mambourin is a not-for-profit organisation which provides services and supported employment for people with disabilities in the Western Suburbs. Mambourin CEO Rohan Braddy said he hoped companies and businesses would jump on board to sponsor, donate or enter teams to play on the day. “The golf day provides additional income for us to do things that otherwise would be impossible for us to do,” Mr Braddy said. “It is very important to us to add additional value to the works that we do to support people with disabilities.” This will be the eighth event of its kind, and so far the fund-raiser has been successful in raising more than $100,000 over the last seven years. Proceeds have been used to improve and purchase needed infrastructure and equipment at both the Werribee South and Sunshine sites. Mr Braddy said the day was also a great opportunity to break down barriers by creating networks and friendships. The golf competition will be in an Ambrose team format with both handicap and non-handicap competitions. “I’m not a great golfer but I do enjoy getting out on the course,” Mr Braddy said looking forward to the event. “I honestly just enjoy sharing with people the great work that Mambourin do.” For more information about sponsoring a Friends of Mambourin John and Jeanne Burbidge, have been hole, donating prizes or entering a team con- instrumental in making the golf day a success over the years. THROUGH most of the 20th century it seemed that gardeners had to make a choice - either have an entirely native landscape, or stick strictly to exotics. All that’s changed, however, as native plants have been tamed, developed and made more garden friendly. It’s easy now to have a garden that blends plants from all parts of the world, including Australia. While some native plants are renowned for being finicky and hard to get on with, others are very adaptable and will grow just about anywhere. Here are some tried and trusted favourites: Trees and shrubs - Bottlebrushes of all types are renowned for their toughness. They vary from tree size (e.g. Callistemon ‘Hannah Ray’) to the tiny (to 45cm) ‘Little John’ which has dark red flowers and blue-grey leaves. Ground cover - Fan flowers such as Scaevola spp have rich green leaves and triangular-shaped flowers in shades of blue, bluish-pink, mauve and white. They make good ground covers and look very effective draping over a bank or down the sides of a pot. Keep away from heavy frosts. Accent - Lomandra ‘Tanika’, an Australian bred, fineleafed, grassy clumper, is so tough and realiable it’s been exported to many parts of the world. Planted en masse, ‘Tanika’ creates a rippling

While the flowers of the native version are smaller, they have a delicate beauty that rivals the exotics - and the plants are much hardier. Female plants smother themselves with fluffy seed heads after flowering, which gives rise to the common name of ‘old man’s beard’. Give them a support to climb on or let them scramble to form a ground cover.

Caring for natives These choices will grow in a wide range of situations. Prune back after flowering to encourage new growth and feed a couple of times a year with a slow release fertiliser such as Acticote or Garden Gold for Natives. Yates Blood and Bone is good, too. If soil is heavy or stays wet after rainy periods, it’s a sensible precaution to spray a couple of times a year with Yates Anti Rot. SPACE AND CHARM

WERRIBEE

FROM PAGE 1 SET on a substantial 697m2 allotment, the agent says this perfectly presented residence offers a “ready to enjoy” lifestyle of space, charm and central Werribee convenience. It offers a fabulous combination of old and new with a surprisingly spacious interior. There are three generous-sized bedrooms, full ensuite and walk-in robe to main and full length built-in robes to the secondary bedrooms. The central kitchen is well appointed, offering plenty of cupboard space, and two good-sized living areas further enhance the home’s family appeal. Outside, there is a delightful country style verandah that is perfect for outdoor entertaining, and overlooks the rear yard and the oversized double garage will easily accommodate two cars with room for a work area as well. The home is within easy walking distance to the Werribee CBD.

REGIONAL HOME PRICES SHOOT UP

ENZO RAIMONDO

CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria

THE median price of a home in regional Victoria reached a record high in the last three months of 2013. Statewide, the December quarter median house price for regional areas was $320,500, an increase of 2.6 per cent on the September quarter price of $312,500. But across the state there were huge variations in price growth with some areas increasing by more than 10 per cent while others fell. Median house prices in the three major centres - Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong - all grew and their prices remain at their peaks. Bendigo was up 1.6 per cent on the September quarter, the highest growth of the three centres. Such growth reflects the strong price increases in Melbourne over this period, with buyers taking advantage of record low interest rates. But across Victoria it was a mixed story with economic conditions and local factors impacting on prices. In Queenscliff, for example, an area which is sought after by both retirees and holiday home buyers,

1

the median price was $687,000 - an increase of 13.6 per cent on the previous quarter. Among the other best performing areas were Ararat, where the December quarter median price of $179,750 was up 17.9 per cent on the September quarter, Colac-Otway where the increase was 8.1 per cent, Wellington Shire with 3.5 per cent and Wangaratta, with 7.3 per cent. By contrast the overall median house price for East Gippsland fell by 1.7 per cent, compared with the previous quarter, while Horsham’s fall was 7.7 per cent. There was a 2.2 per cent fall in Warrnambool. Medians include the highest sales as well as the lowest , which can push up the median price. But this does not necessarily mean all homes in the area will reach such heights. This is worth remembering for property owners who are using the medians to price their own house, They are a valuable starting point but many individual factors such as location, quality and size, for example, may mean a home is worth more, or less.

Steps in the right direction STEPS Studios is an all-inclusive dance school that offers dance education and fun for a variety of ages and levels of ability and interest. It has everything from important early childhood development classes, integration of special needs students and those with learning difficulties, to advanced level classes for the vocationally minded student. Dance brings its students many benefits. It helps to develop self-confidence in extremely shy individuals and the cognitive and motor skill develop-

The curriculum begins with Angelina Ballerina Classes for students aged three to six years with a focus on dance education and child development and psychology. Research has proved that learning dance is instrumental in the development of social, emotional, physical and cognitive needs of this age group. A child’s first seven years are critical in the development of cognitive/ neural, motor, socio-emotional and language development. Steps provides an active learning

ment of young children, through to the achievement of career aspirations. Steps student Madison Lu, at the age eight, made her professional theatre debut as Molly in the Melbourne production of Annie at the Regent Theatre. Through movement, dance provides an opportunity for artistic, creative and personal expression, physical exercise and the development of musicality, positive discipline, self-confidence and psychological and neurological benefits which all assist academic studies and personal development.

environment through its early childhood Angelina Ballerina Dance Program which is safe, effective, developmentally appropriate and fun. The program sets children up to naturally progress into the Royal Academy of Dance classical ballet syllabus to continue their dance education for either recreational or vocational endeavours. Steps also offers theatrical classes in jazz/funk, tap, hip hop and contemporary dance. To mark the beginning of its 15th year of operation, Angelina Ballerina

will be visiting the Yarraville studio on Sunday 2 March. All enrolled students will have the opportunity to meet Angelina, do a short ballet class with her and have their photograph taken. Other students who are interested in in taking part in the program are welcome to attend as space permits. For more information visit the website www.stepsstudios.com.au, send an email to info@stepsstudios.com.au or contact Rachelle Kellett on 0405 846 668.

“Singers love to sing and at the Institute of Singing, you’ll do that and more.” The school offers private singing lessons and also private group singing lessons at both studio locations. Nancy is available to prepare students for upcoming auditions such as The Voice and X Factor. Singing competitions and talent quest performances each year are both popular and require a lot of preparation. This year’s Singers Launchpad Annual Showcase event 2014 will be held in late November in the Starlight Room at TLH. Students will be prepared for performances throughout the year and will take part based on their readiness. Lessons commence 3 February and enrolments are now open for new students. If you are interested in sharing the cost of a lesson then small group lessons of two to five students would suit. Private half hour lessons are available. All ages and all levels are welcome. Call Nancy D’Agostino on 0407 860 765 for more information. Free voice assessments available.

Set to jump for cheer squad class IT’S hard to be humble when you can stunt, jump and tumble! Cheer Central is a dedicated cheerleading and hip hop program catering for competitive and recreational athletes. Its accredited coaches have trained hard and researched all the latest trends across the country and overseas. Cheerleading is one of Australia’s fastest growing sports, with Cheer Central’s programs offering explosive cheer, pom, hip hop, gymnastics, acrobatics, tumbling, high flying tosses and the visually exciting stunting routines that are now seen in many cheerleading movies. It takes skill, athleticism, strength and energy. There is so much to learn and it’s a great way to keep fit and be part of a team. Cheerleading’s popularity has hit a high with so many children and teenagers finding they “get

the bug” after just a couple of training sessions. Recreational Street Cheer Classes offer a combination of cheer and hip hop in a fresh, vibrant and fun atmosphere, while learning technique and skills. For the more serious cheerleader and or dancer, the competitive teams provide an exciting and challenging experience. Sophie Maconachie, who at just 11 has been participating for six years said: “The atmosphere at competitions is amazing. It is so much fun. “I love dance and gymnastics, and by doing Cheer I get to do both.” Cheer Central had great success in 2013, including bringing home a second and third place at the AASCF National Championships. Whether it’s just for fun, or for those looking for a challenge, contact Cheer Central on 0417 557 422 for further info and try out sessions.

Cheer Central cheerleaders are at the top of their game.

Avoid hot weather stresses medications for mental illness. Heat stroke may appear similar to heat exhaustion, but the skin may be dry with no sweating and the person’s mental condition worsens. They may stagger, appear confused, fit, collapse and become unconscious. Warning signs of heat stroke vary, but may include very high body temperature, red, hot, dry skin but no sweating, a dry swollen tongue or throbbing headache. To prevent heat stress, drink plenty of water or other cool, non-alcoholic fluids. Avoid drinking extremely cold liquids as they can cause stomach cramps, and avoid heavy exertion. Reduce physical activity and

avoid vigorous exercise in hot weather. If activity is unavoidable, try to schedule activity for the cooler part of the day and rest often. Whenever possible, stay indoors or in the shade. People should stay cool and keep air circulating around them and if they don’t have air conditioning they should consider visiting an air-conditioned shopping centre or public library. Remember to check on older, sick and frail people who may need help coping with the heat and never leave anyone or pets in a closed parked car. Pets pile on pounds

vet

talk With Dr Kristi of Hoppers Crossing Vet Clinic and Hospital

THIS is Lori our vet Dr Roslyn’s labrador puppy who will have her weight regularly kept in check. Many portly pets could do with a new year’s resolution to cut the kilos. The disturbing fact is that 30-40 per cent of pets are overweight. When in ideal body condition owners should be able to feel their pet’s ribs easily and see a definite ‘waist’. It is common for certain breeds such as Labradors and pugs to become overweight easily. If a pet is too chubby then owners need to consult their veterinary team for a weight loss program. After determining a pet’s target weight, vets will advise on how much to feed and schedule regular weigh-ins. To achieve weight loss owners need to cut out any left overs and avoid treats and fatty bones that contain lots of calories. A measured amount of low calorie food should be offered in two small meals. Prescription weight control diets

Ensure your pet has a happy and healthy new year by changing its diet. are fully balanced, filling for the pet and designed to achieve weight loss steadily. Exercise is also vital so aim for daily walks that increase in length as both owner and pet become fitter. Cats are more difficult to exercise but many love chasing toys around the house. The team at Hoppers Crossing Veterinary Clinic wish clients and their animals a happy new year as it celebrates its 20th year of caring for the area’s pets in 2014.

Piece of Cake I don’t know about you, but once I drag out my son’s lunchbox to begin the new school year, Christmas really DOES feel like a distant memory. I laugh now when I think of how times have changed since my own days at school. Back in the ’70s, the Food Police didn’t judge what you put in your child’s lunchbox. I was such a fussy eater as a kid, my poor mum would slip in the odd slice of chocolate cake, I suppose figuring it was better if I ate SOMETHING rather than nothing at all! It was also perfectly acceptable for kids to order dim sims, pies and donuts for lunch from the greasy spoon joint down the road. After school, my mum often made me an apricot jam tart, covered with lashings of coconut and served hot from the oven, cut into big wedges like pizza. None of this carrot sticks and hummus business! This floury, doughy tart remains one of my fondest childhood memories, though probably not the healthiest. Ah, naughty versus healthy. I like to think the recipe I’m featuring this week falls somewhere in between. This very simple, moist, magnificent cake makes a great ‘sometimes’ snack for the lunchbox, or for after school. And with two cups of grated carrot in it, surely it qualifies as a health food! Of course you can omit the walnuts if you like and replace them with a cup of sultanas.

CARROT CAKE 1 cup canola oil 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 ½ cups self raising flour 1 tsp bicarb soda 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon 2 cups firmly packed grated carrot 1 cup walnut crumbs Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius. Grease and line a 20cm cake pan. Combine oil, sugar and eggs in a bowl and whisk well. Sift flour, bicarb soda and cinnamon over the oil mixture. Stir gently. Add carrot and walnuts. Mix well. Spread mixture into pan and bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Cool ten minutes in pan before turning onto rack. Ice with cream cheese frosting (I simply add a few heaped tablespoons of cream cheese to regular vanilla icing).

Sport David Wolfe blasted 110 in Werribee’s huge win against Melton on the weekend. 95248 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

Wolfe makes meal of Lions By LIAM TWOMEY IN HIS return to the Werribee first XI, David Wolfe wasted no time making himself at home. The gun opening batsman smashed his way to an impressive 110 and led the Tigers to a crushing victory against Melton. After bowling first on day one, the combination of Jonathon Burton, Heath Pritchard and Michael Freeman bulldozed their way through the Melton batting line-up, taking three wickets each. The Tigers were set just 124 for victory, which was easily reeled in during the early stages of day two. Wolfe’s 110 continues what has been a great return for the opening batsman after injury halted his start to the 2013/14 season. Before Saturday’s innings for the first XI, Wolfe also made

a 52 and a 91 for the seconds. “We weren’t quite expecting 110 from the big fella,” Werribee captain Shaun Dean said about Wolfe’s return. “He is a quality player so you know you’re going to get experience and a few runs from him as well as that presence he has around the group and that he carries out with him on the ground. “It is pretty intimidating for opposition sides when he walks out to bat and is hitting fours and sixes. “He set it up early, getting the 46 not out overnight ... then he got the quick-fire 60 the next morning so it was pretty special from him.” The weekend’s result has Werribee at a perfect 10-0 after the first 10 matches of the season. The Tigers are also two games clear of their nearest rival (Oakleigh) on the ladder.

When round 11 begins this weekend, Werribee will took to continue its unbeaten run against 10th placed Williamstown. “Willy are always a good team with (Mathew) Inness and Craig Sheedy there. They are two match winners in themselves,” Dean said. “We definitely won’t be taking them lightly. There is a bit of a western rivalry there as well.” With Oakleigh getting beaten and our percentage being quite superior to everyone else, if we win we can all but sure up top spot for the rest of the year regardless of any other results. “It is a huge game for us and we will be setting ourselves for this one.” In other VSDCA results, Box Hill beat Altona, Croydon got the better of Sunshine and Williamstown was too good for Mount Waverley.

WESTERN Region Football League CEO Bob Tregear says implementing a Victoria-wide player points system to curb rising player payments in local football will not be easy. While Tregear has thrown his support behind an AFL Victoria push for an eventual statewide system in coming years, he believes putting the theory into practice will face a number of challenges. “It’s got to be acknowledged it’s going to be a very difficult task to come up with something that will work,” Tregear said. “But we certainly support going down that path (and) if something can be found that will work then it could only be of benefit, because the moment the chequebook is ruling community football, then that’s a problem for everybody.

Deer Park celebrates after winning the Division One flag against Spotswood last year. 105750 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI “So I think if everyone’s got the same ground rules to play by then it could only improve the competition.” Tregear noted the potential restrictions on players’ rights to move freely will be one of the major issues of implementing a

player points system. “It’s an awkward thing because you run into all sorts of things like restraint of trade, the natural justice, freedom of association and all sorts of other things that are out there that can cause problems with it,” Tregear said. Tregear also said any agreedupon system needs to incorporate the entire state, after he told Star the WRFL discussed the issue at a strategic planning meeting in November. “I think it’s fair to say there’s been a constant dialogue with clubs over several years, and clubs continually raise this issue with us as to what we can do about it,” Tregear said. “But it’s something that requires a state-wide approach and we can’t do anything in isolation, that’s why we’re strongly supporting what AFL Victoria’s doing.”

Cordy takes role at the top GREAT to see Brian Cordy taking a role at the Footscray VFL side in 2014. “Toby” was a very good player in his day (124 games) and if you talk to those that played with him, they will always talk about him as a great team man. His background of coaching in Geelong at TAC Cup and local level plus at Geelong College will be of great benefit. His role is to oversee the coaching staff on match days and to share his experience and knowledge to the playing group.

They are the great unknowns of the upcoming Western Region Football League season. In a competition filled with big names and strong clubs, where do new kids on the block, Werribee Districts, fit? While only time will tell for 2014, one thing is for sure, the Tigers have big plans for their future in WRFL.

THE Wyndham Suns is another new club in the area with its home ground at Goddard Reserve in Tarneit. The club used to be based at Westbourne College as Old Westbourne. The launch of the club and registration day will take place this Sunday 9 February at the Tarneit Community Centre from 1.30pm. The club will be fielding sides in the WRFL under-9s through to under-16s with a Youth Girls and Women’s team as well. The seniors will play in the VAFA. Their senior coach is Phillip Ballis and Brad Gilham will be coaching the under-19s. Like all clubs these days they are active on social media, so check them out. THE Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club past players day is coming up this Saturday at Hogans Road when the seniors will take on Old Mentonians. Rodney Malcolm Hogg spoke at the club last weekend and from all reports went down a treat. The fact I work with Hoggy each week on SEN, it does not come as a surprise, as he is a very funny man. Past players like myself. Stuart Broad and Fawed Ahmed can enjoy a barbecue lunch and a few cold ales at a very reasonable price. The Hoppers Sports Club Awards night is coming up on 22 February at the Racing Club which I am proud to be hosting once again. For bookings and details contact Darren Hellman on 0413 607 645. CLEARANCES have opened in all footy competitions and now we find out the real from the unreal. There is so much tripe bandied about at this time of the year it is not funny. Can’t wait to sort the wheat from the chaff.

But in good news for the future, the Tigers’ young guns will be staying put with all members of the 2013 playing list returning this season. “Our number one priority (during the offseason) was to retain the players we had on our list,” Harrington said about the club’s recruiting strategy. “We are happy to report that every single player from the senior ranks from last year is staying. After having, in the previous two years, between 50 and 60 players leave, to be able to retain all of our guys is fantastic. “Our second goal was to get some of our players back and when I say our players, I mean guys who were at our club and for various reasons, went elsewhere. While we haven’t been able to get every single one back, because it was going to be financially impossible, we have started to turn the tide and we have been able to get a number of guys back.” Some of the players returning to Werribee this season will be Tate and Shaun McCutcheon as well as Brent Morrow. With the season kicking off in early April, excitement is building both at Werribee and around the league, ahead of the club’s

return to the WRFL. The Tigers will begin their 2014 campaign against Hoppers Crossing in a night match at Chirnside Park in what is expected to have a finals like crowd and atmosphere. The match will also see new Werribee coach Wade Chapman go head-to-head with new Hoppers Crossing coach Steve Kretiuk. After being in the top job for a few months now, Chapman is happy with the way the playing list is progressing through the preseason. “It has been very encouraging,” Chapman said. “The numbers have been good and we are averaging 45 for each session. We had 12 sessions before Christmas and started back on the 20th of January. “We had a fitness test before and after Christmas and 75 per cent of the guys bettered their times for the 3km time-trial. “We have trained really hard and we are going to be fit. We still have some hard work to do and we are quietly confident that we will be competitive. Being our first year back in, it is a bit of an unknown too.”

THE 13th Annual Peter Bunworth Memorial Match between Hoppers Crossing and Wyndhamvale again proved to be a tense last-manstanding affair. After a slow start, the Vales finished with 114 from their 20 overs which most thought was about 20 runs short of what would be required. In the chase, Hoppers lost regular wickets due to the wicket keeping low, poor shot selection and three stupid run-outs to slump to 9/86 before ‘Grimace’ Mitchell 53 not out and ‘Puff Diddy’ Dowling 20 not out got Hoppers over the line. Hoppers now lead 7-6 in the overall standings in what was a great day in honour of a great man. Shaun Mould (Mouldy) was the stand-out player for the Vales while Grimace got the job done for Hoppers. MAKE no mistake about it, Werribee Districts haven’t crossed over to the Western Region Football League to make up the numbers. The Tigers have set their sights on going toe-to-toe with the best the league has to offer and coming out on top. Although Werribee president Rod Harrington knows that may not happen overnight, he and his committee have been busy putting the building blocks in place to ensure the Tigers’ climb up the ladder starts now. “We haven’t made this move just to be middle of the table,” Harrington said. “People in our club, we have a competitive streak and competitive nature. We are not looking to go to the WRFL just to make up numbers. We want to be the best. “(In our first year) we would like to think we are going to be competitive. I’ve said all along that we don’t know what to expect but I think the other side of the coin is that the other sides in the competition don’t know what to expect of us.” With the bounce of the ball for round one under two months away, Werribee has pulled off a recruiting coup, welcoming former Geelong and Essendon midfielder Brent Prismall to the club. Prismall played his junior football at Werribee Districts and will balance playing for the club around his VFL commitments with Footscray. He will be joined at Soldiers Reserve by former Werribee VFL best-and-fairest winner Ben Sharp who is another marquee signing. “Brent was one of the players who played all his junior footy with us so this will be a bit of a homecoming,” Harrington said. “He is a fantastic representative of the club and a good citizen and we are rapt that he is going to come back and play. “It is great to have Ben Sharp on board as well. “He won Werribee’s best and fairest a couple of years ago and was on the West Coast Eagles list for a couple of years.” After climbing the ranks of the Victorian Amateur Football Association, Werribee’s progress was halted by continual recruiting raids from rival clubs that did not have to contend with amateur sport restrictions.

GOOD to see some local WRFL faces signed to the Bulldogs including Jesse Fortune (Glenorden), Jase Perkins (Port Colts), Todd Finco (Albion) Christian Elliot ande Michael Fogarty (Spotswood). All five had the talent to make it at VFL level and their local clubs can only benefit from the experience they will bring back. Both Werribee and Williamstown also have a pathway for local players to be part of their clubs so there has never been more opportunities for players to step to the next level.

Mitchell’s winning streak By LIAM TWOMEY AFTER a brilliant year on the athletics track, Morgan Mitchell was named the Don Deeble Rising Star Award winner for 2012/13. Mitchell impressed the competition’s judges with her outstanding sporting achievements, which included making the Australian Under 19 Athletics Squad and being selected as a member of the senior national 4x400 squad to prepare for the Commonwealth Games, World Relay Championships, World Championships and the Olympic Games in Rio. Mitchell is the fastest female 400 metre runner in Victoria in both senior and junior competition and the second fastest in Australia. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award is run by the Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club and sponsored by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Each month, one nominee receives $1000 towards achieving their sporting goals before the top four athletes are invited back for the competition’s grand final. As the overall winner, Mitchell took home a cheque for $5000 to help her reach her future sporting goals. “I just want to thank all the sponsors and everyone involved with the award,” Mitchell said. “I really appreciate everything they have done for me.

I didn’t expect to win because all the guys in the final were so good. “I’m just really excited and with all the trips I have got coming up, it is a huge help.” Mitchell also thanked her coach, Peter Burke, for the hard work he has done in helping her get to the top. “I have been working with him for 10 years coming up in March/April and he is the best,” Mitchell said. “He has done everything for me. He has taken me to a lot of my training sessions. He has been there when I have been injured. I really respect him and owe everything to him. The best thing about him is that he doesn’t just care for me. He takes time for everyone in the club (Western Athletics). He is like family now.” Also on the night, three cheques for $2000 were presented to the joint runners-up of the award. They were Dejan Vasiljevic (basketball), Nathan Pellissier (table tennis) and Aaron Wain (taekwondo). The action didn’t end there with AFL legend David Parkin on hand as the guest speaker. Parkin gave an enthralling account of his time in the AFL world and the importance of providing support for young athletes.

WYNDHAM Track and Field athletes’s hit paydirt when they competed in the Victorian Country Championships. The one-year-old athletic club won three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal and achieved four personal best performances at Ballarat. The medal tally would have almost certainly been higher had the club been able to field a 4x100 squad in the open men’s division. Club coach Errol Hart was satisfied with the result from the eight man, one woman squad in light of enforced absences by a number of its senior athletes. “The Country Championships were a good competition for the club - Chris Mitrevski was outstanding, two gold and one silver medal, really putting the club on the map after just a year’s existence.” Mitrevski won the under-20 men’s long and was dominant in the under-20 men’s 200m with a PB of 21.9 seconds. He only missed out on the 100m gold by the width of his singlet after a sluggish start. Wyndham’s competition manager Peter Gavaghan added: “Our other gold medal was won by Darius Lewis in his first season as a shot putter. His gold came in the under-20 division.
