Other REIV data shows median house prices in Hobson Bay has risen across the board. Altona North and Newport recorded increases compared to data from the June 2013 quarter. In June 2013 Altona North recorded a median house price of $490,000 compared to $547,500 this quarter and Newport recorded a median house price of $741,750 compared to $671,000 last June. Compton Green Real Estate director Adrian Butera said one change that increased median house prices in Williamstown was buyer confidence in the mid to higher end properties and “with that confidence came the results”. “As we step into 2014 were going to be looking very closely at our auctions over the next few weeks.” He said a home owner trend in the inner West was to sell property and buy back property in the inner West. “People will continue to stay (in the West) and that momentum will continue.”

MEDIAN house prices in Williamstown have hit a new high topping the list as the only Western Suburb to reach the magical million mark. The Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s (REIV) median house prices for the December 2013 quarter revealed the Williamstown house median hit $1 million, making it the only suburb in the West to reach seven digits. “This was achieved following strong quarterly growth of 19 per cent (and 16.6 per cent annually) for the suburb,” REIV CEO Enzo Raimondo said. Mr Raimondo said the quarterly results across Melbourne showed a strong quarter at the end of a year of growth in median prices and that “Williamstown has been a key part of this growth”. Williamstown joins a growing list of suburbs valued at $1 million and over including Sandringham, Hampton, Port Melbourne and Malvern. “Across Melbourne, the driver of house price growth was the consistently low interest rates throughout 2013 – which, in all likelihood, helped to lift prices to all-new levels in Williamstown.”

Car injury figures fall, hurt lingers THE number of people hospitalised after a road accident in Hobsons Bay has dropped, but too many are still being hurt on local roads, according to Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) Janet Dore. According to the latest TAC serious injury crash data, the number of people hospitalised following road accidents in the municipality has fallen from 71 in the 2012 financial year to 50 last year. Ms Dore, the TAC’s chief executive, said while the result was positive, too many people were still being injured on local roads. “Any reduction in road trauma is pleasing but the fact is no-one should die or be seriously injured on Victorian roads,” Ms Dore said. Claims involving acute hospitalisation of more than 14 days from 12 months to May 2013 dropped 9 per cent from 11 people in 2012 to 10 last year. A total of 895 claims involving hospitalisation in Hobsons Bay were recorded from 1 July 2012 to 30 June last year with 149 of those hospitalised for more than 14 days. “Hobsons Bay has seen a fairly dramatic fall in the number of hospitalisations but we can never celebrate a situation where 50 people have been hopsitalised and 10 of them were injured seriously enough to still be in hospital 14 days later.” Ms Dore said reducing serious injuries was a key goal of the State Government’s Road Safety Strategy. “Our vision is for every Victorian’s journey to be a safe one,” Ms Dore said.

Six unhygienic food outlets landed in a soup By NICOLE VALICEK HOBSONS BAY has topped the list for the highest number of poor food hygiene breaches in the state, according to the Department of Health’s Register of Food and Safety Convictions. The registrar shows six food outlets in the municipality have been taken to court since August 2012 for food safety breaches, followed by five in Brimbank. Three out of six offending food outlets are located in Altona and Altona North followed by two in Williamstown and one in Laverton.

Former Bakers Delight franchisee Beepbake Pty Ltd located in Borrack Square Altona was fined $3500 with $4500 costs in November 2012 for seven breaches of the Food Act. Breaches included failure to store food in such a way that it was protected from the likelihood of contamination and failure to maintain easily accessible hand washing facilities. The food outlet is now under new management and observes all regulations, according to Bakers Delight spokesperson Paul Houlihan. “A new operator took over op-

erations of Bakers Delight Borrack Square, and has been compliant with the relevant food authorities and Bakers Delight’s internal measures,” he said. “This was an isolated event, and we continue to work together with all Bakers Delight franchisees to achieve and maintain the highest food safety standards.” In the municipality, five convictions were for critically unhygienic businesses. The heaviest fine handed down was $18,000, with $5321.60 in costs for an Italian restaurant in Williamstown for 13 breaches of the food act.

Hobsons Bay Mayor Sandra Wilson said the council worked very closely with all 639 food businesses in the municipality to ensure compliance with food safety standards is taken very seriously. “Prosecution is an absolute last resort, which in 2012-2013 affected less than 1 per cent of its registered food businesses,” she said. “In that same year, there were no proven cases of food poisoning, and people can continue to enjoy the diversity and quality of food on offer here, whether residents or visitors.”

Dramatic drive-off arrests A POLICE crackdown on one of Wyndham’s fastest rising crimes has seen a spate of people fined and two men arrested following a daring chase on foot. Last week during a five day operation police were using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to nab drivers who had committed petrol drive-offs in the Wyndham area. On Tuesday at around 1.45pm they scanned the plates of a Toyota Aurion travelling on Fairbairn Rd in Laverton North and were notified that the car had an expired registration. Just as they were about to pull the vehicle over, the driver attempted to flee, speeding away from police. But his escape was short lived as he slammed into the gutter of a

roundabout, causing the front left tyre of the car to almost fly off and the front axle to be snapped in two. As police caught up with the vehicle, the driver and his passenger, both aged in their early 20s, jumped out of the car and attempted to run away on foot. They were quickly caught by police however, before the driver admitted that the car was stolen. Leading Senior Constable Mick Campbell apprehended the passenger and told Star the car was believed to have been stolen out of the Central Square car park in Altona. “As we put the lights on they’ve taken off before hitting the curb and snapping the axle,” Ldng Sen Const Campbell said. “The doors then flew open and they split up with. My partner chased the driver and I chased the passenger into the nearby park.”

Sergeant Mick Welsh said in December last year there had been 82 petrol drive-offs reported in Wyndham alone and so far in 2014 there had been a 13.5 per cent reported increase in the crime. “The petrol drive-offs are pushing our reports of theft up,” Sgt Welsh said. “We see them a fair bit, but today is a good result because no one was injured and we’ve got two people in custody.” A staff member at a Laverton petrol station who did not want to be identified told Star that petrol driveoffs were almost a daily occurrence. “Sometimes the people come back because they just forgot to pay for it, but most of the time it’s people stealing something they don’t think they should have to pay for, even though everyone else does,” the staff member said.

Police Inspector Damien Christensen told Star number plate thefts and vehicle thefts could be directly linked with the theft of petrol. “It’s pretty much guaranteed that if your plates or your vehicle is stolen it’s being used for no good,” Insp Christensen said. “A recent Vic Health survey found that Wyndham has the highest percentage of people commuting for two hours a day, 26.2 per cent, more than double the Victorian average of 11.6 per cent. “Unfortunately this is a bit like a tsunami suburb. We have a big wave of vehicles leaving every day at about 8am and then returning at about 4 or 5pm, and that is a contributing factor to the rise of drive-offs.” “It’s now getting to the point where people have got to think about putting one way screws on their number plates.”

POLICE impounded two cars within 24 hours last week after burnouts were done right in front of them on two separate occasions, one with a baby in the back seat. Members from the Heavy Vehicle Unit intercepted a car at around 2.40pm on Monday on Bulmans Road after the driver was observed doing a burnout in front of a patrol car in Melton West.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the 26-year-old male driver also returned a positive Preliminary Oral Fluid Test and refused to accompany police for an Oral Fluid Test. “The man, from Hoppers Crossing, had his vehicle impounded on the spot and is expected to be charged on summons for a number of traffic related offences,” the spokesperson said. In another incident, Transit police in Altona intercepted a

vehicle after it was observed doing a burnout before leaving a car park on The Esplanade. When police approached the car to speak with the driver, they noticed a six-month old baby sitting in a car seat in the back seat. The man was also travelling with his partner. The 30-year-old Kingsbury man’s car was impounded for 30 days and he was expected to be charged on summons with traffic related offences.

A NEW show that will headline the upcoming Newport Folk Festival is calling on the sirens and seductresses of Newport to participate. This year for the first time Newport Folk Festival will present Fem Vox to headline its festival in July. The show will be directed by local Donna Jackson, with music director Jennifer Lund and executive producer Michael Stewart. Ms Jackson said the production will celebrate women’s voices and female singers who

have sung to seduce and remember. The audience will hear songs of cabaret and seduction, from across time and into this century. “I see it as being a spectacular night of voice and soul that’s celebrating our skill,” she said. Ms Jackson said applications are now open for all singers who would like to be part of the show. “There is a selection process which will be decided upon based on what is required to create a fabulous show.” The event is open to soloists and group singers from Newport and the Western Suburbs.

Gas discharged to atmosphere when the container hatch was open, causing gluelike odours to pollute the atmosphere in Altona North and as far away as Sunshine. Environmental Protection

Authority’s Director Environmental regulation, Chris Webb said businesses shouldn’t allow a lapse in vigilance on environmental obligations. “Companies should continually monitor their processes and pay attention to details and procedures,” he said. Since the incident, Hyde Park has stopped handling and washing bulk ISO containers containing ethyl acrylate. Hyde Park was also ordered to pay EPA’s costs of $13,825.30.

Skyline captured by German duo By NICOLE VALICEK TWO German backpackers have left their artistic mark on the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre in Altona. Daniel Huch, 18 and Malik Keller, 19, from Hannover in Germany, embarked on a gap year of travel three months ago. The friends met and joined a German couple in Sydney who were travelling to Altona. They were introduced to the staff at the centre and have stayed in the area for the last two month, sleeping in the back of their Holden Jackaroo 4 Wheel Drive for the last two

months. “It’s calm here and you can enjoy every second, and it’s no stress in Altona,” Malik said. During their stay, the young men volunteered at the centre and were given permission to use the cooking facilities. Last week, Daniel and Malik started the next leg of their journey, but before going they gifted the centre with a special piece of art. “(We wanted to give a) heartfelt thank you for the community centre that they gave us the opportunity to do the project and for their help and kindness,” Daniel said.

The talented graffiti artists painted a bold scene of Altona and the Melbourne skyline on a shipping container located in the car park. “It’s very respectful it can stay there forever or a long time,” Daniel said. Centre manager Jill Bilston said the art work complemented another painted container in the car park. “It was very exciting because the container unpainted looks so ugly, now we have a piece of art in the car park ... The two shipping containers now look brilliant together,” Ms Bilston said.

HYDE Park Tank Depot has been ordered to pay $40,000 towards a community and environment based project after pleading guilty in Sunshine Magistrates’ Court to an air pollution charge and a breach of licence charge. Abortive bank hold-up POLICE are looking for a gunman who attempted to hold-up a bank in Altona on 17 December 2013. The man allegedly threatened a teller, and demanded cash, at the Millers Rd branch around 10am.

He is described as Caucasian and was wearing a light cap, glasses, grey hoodie with red writing, jeans and was carrying a black backpack with a silver and red pocket. The teller activated the bank’s alarm and the man fled

empty handed. Police have released images of a man whom they believe may be able to assist in their inquiries. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

THROUGH most of the 20th century it seemed that gardeners had to make a choice - either have an entirely native landscape, or stick strictly to exotics. All that’s changed, however, as native plants have been tamed, developed and made more garden friendly. It’s easy now to have a garden that blends plants from all parts of the world, including Australia. While some native plants are renowned for being finicky and hard to get on with, others are very adaptable and will grow just about anywhere. Here are some tried and trusted favourites: Trees and shrubs - Bottlebrushes of all types are renowned for their toughness. They vary from tree size (e.g. Callistemon ‘Hannah Ray’) to the tiny (to 45cm) ‘Little John’ which has dark red flowers and blue-grey leaves. Ground cover - Fan flowers such as Scaevola spp have rich green leaves and triangular-shaped flowers in shades of blue, bluish-pink, mauve and white. They make good ground covers and look very effective draping over a bank or down the sides of a pot. Keep away from heavy frosts. Accent - Lomandra ‘Tanika’, an Australian bred, fineleafed, grassy clumper, is so tough and realiable it’s been exported to many parts of the world. Planted en masse, ‘Tanika’ creates a rippling ‘sea’ of narrow leaves.

Hot car warning By CHARLENE MACAULAY EARLY Childhood Management Services across Melbourne has joined Kidsafe’s Kids in Hot Cars campaign to help protect babies and small children from being left in life threatening situations. ECMS will place safety signs at the entrance of every service in the ECMS network reminding parents and carers not to leave their children in hot cars. The service has more than 27 centres across the West, including the Bulldogs Community Children’s Centre, Seaholme Kindergarten, St Albans

East Preschool, Kealba Kindergarten, Mossfiel Children’s Centre in Hoppers Crossing and Brookside Preschool in Caroline Springs. Kidsafe CEO Melanie Courtney welcomed the partnership with Early Childhood Management Services, saying it provided an important and vital link in getting the Kids in Hot Cars safety message through at a grass roots level. During the recent heatwave in Victoria, a total 53 children were rescued after being left unattended in a car. Following a number of child deaths and several years of Kidsafe campaigning, Victorian

legislation now makes leaving a child unattended in a car a criminal offence, with penalties ranging from a $2165 fine or three months in prison. “The temperature inside a parked car can be up to 20 to 30 degrees hotter than the outside temperature. Even leaving a window slightly open does little to cool the temperature inside the car,” Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Wendy Lovell said. Many portly pets could do with a new yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s resolution to cut the kilos. The disturbing fact is that 30-40 per cent of pets are overweight. When in ideal body condition owners should be able to feel their petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ribs easily and see a definite â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;waistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. It is common for certain breeds such as Labradors and pugs to become overweight easily. If a pet is too chubby then owners need to consult their veterinary team for a weight loss program. After determining a petâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s target weight, vets will advise on how much to feed and schedule regular weigh-ins. To achieve weight loss owners need to cut out any left overs and avoid treats and fatty bones that contain lots of calories. A measured amount of low calorie food should be offered in two small meals. Prescription weight control diets

Each year the RSPCA receives hundreds of distress calls about animals, usually dogs, being left in cars during the hotter months. On a 23 degree day, the inside of a car can reach more than 40 degrees. In this heat, a pet can die an agonising death in less than six minutes. Piece of Cake I don’t know about you, but once I drag out my son’s lunchbox to begin the new school year, Christmas really DOES feel like a distant memory. I laugh now when I think of how times have changed since my own days at school. Back in the ’70s, the Food Police didn’t judge what you put in your child’s lunchbox. I was such a fussy eater as a kid, my poor mum would slip in the odd slice of chocolate cake, I suppose figuring it was better if I ate SOMETHING rather than nothing at all! It was also perfectly acceptable for kids to order dim sims, pies and donuts for lunch from the greasy spoon joint down the road. After school, my mum often made me an apricot jam tart, covered with lashings of coconut and served hot from the oven, cut into big wedges like pizza. None of this carrot sticks and hummus business! This floury, doughy tart remains one of my fondest childhood memories, though probably not the healthiest. Ah, naughty versus healthy. I like to think the recipe I’m featuring this week falls somewhere in between. This very simple, moist, magnificent cake makes a great ‘sometimes’ snack for the lunchbox, or for after school. And with two cups of grated carrot in it, surely it qualifies as a health food! Of course you can omit the walnuts if you like and replace them with a cup of sultanas.

CARROT CAKE 1 cup canola oil 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 ½ cups self raising flour 1 tsp bicarb soda 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon 2 cups firmly packed grated carrot 1 cup walnut crumbs Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius. Grease and line a 20cm cake pan. Combine oil, sugar and eggs in a bowl and whisk well. Sift flour, bicarb soda and cinnamon over the oil mixture. Stir gently. Add carrot and walnuts. Mix well. Spread mixture into pan and bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Cool ten minutes in pan before turning onto rack. Ice with cream cheese frosting (I simply add a few heaped tablespoons of cream cheese to regular vanilla icing).

WESTERN Region Football League CEO Bob Tregear says implementing a Victoria-wide player points system to curb rising player payments in local football will not be easy. While Tregear has thrown his support behind an AFL Victoria push for an eventual state-wide system in coming years, he believes putting the theory into practice will face a number of challenges. “It’s got to be acknowledged it’s going to be a very difficult task to come up with something that will work,” Tregear said. “But we certainly support going down that path (and) if something can be found that will work then it could only be of benefit, because the moment the chequebook is ruling community football, then that’s a problem for everybody. “So I think if everyone’s got the same ground rules to play by then it could only improve the competition.” Tregear noted the potential restrictions on players’ rights to move freely will be one of the major issues of implementing a player points system. “It’s an awkward thing because you run into all sorts of things like restraint of trade, the natural justice, freedom of association and all sorts of other things that are out there that can cause problems with it,” Tregear said. Tregear also said any agreed-upon system needs to incorporate the entire state, after he told

In the chase, Hoppers lost regular wickets due to the wicket keeping low, poor shot selection and three stupid run-outs to slump to 9/86 before ‘Grimace’ Mitchell 53 not out and ‘Puff Diddy’ Dowling 20 not out got Hoppers over the line. Hoppers now lead 7-6 in the overall standings in what was a great day in honour of a great man. Shaun Mould (Mouldy) was the stand-out player for the Vales while Grimace got the job done for Hoppers. Test of nerves By LIAM TWOMEY WILLIAMSTOWN claimed back-toback wins in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association for the first time this season after a hard-fought victory against Mount Waverley on Saturday. After batting first on day one of the match, the Seagulls set Mount Waverley 240 runs for victory thanks to a well-made half-century from Nathan Hall. Despite having a big total on the board, the contest remained even when the teams returned to the field for day two. Williamstown’s wickets were countered by partnerships from the Mount Waverley batsmen as both teams edged their way towards victory. At 8/209 it looked as though the total would prove too much for the batting side with the remaining runs left up to the tail. Mount Waverley produced one final push to victory thanks to a ninth wicket stand of 26 runs. However, the Williamstown bowlers were able to hold their nerve and secured the fourrun win for their team. “It was sensational,” Williamstown captain Craig Sheedy said of the win. “It was a long day and the game went down to the last over. They needed 25 and I think they got about 20. It was tough cricket. “The guys were really good on the slow, low wicket. They just bowled good lines all day. It got to a point where they really had to go hard. We were able to hold our nerve, just, and get over the line.” Saturday’s result continues what has been a great turn-around in form for Williamstown after the Seagulls went winless in the first six rounds of the season. Since then, Williamstown has beaten Altona, Endeavour Hills and Mount Waverley and climbed from last to 10th on the VSDCA ladder. “I think the turnaround has been in our batting,” Sheedy said. “Some guys have got some big-

Lambert cleared for move to Gulls KANE Lambert will play for Williamstown this season after the player transfer issue between the Northern Blues and Seagulls was resolved. The presidents of both clubs, Stephen Papal (Northern Blues) and Trevor Monti (Williamstown) met with AFL Victoria’s Grant Williams and John Hook to discuss the matter that has been ongoing since December last year. “We fully supported and understood the stance taken by Northern Blues, and in the end the issue was resolved due to the strong relationship and respect between the two club presidents,” AFL Victoria general manager Grant Williams said. “AFL Victoria thanks both Stephen and Trevor for their willingness to meet and resolve an issue that should not have occurred in the first place. “In particular, we would like to acknowledge Stephen Papal, who while disappointed the club was confronted with this issue, put the well-being of the player and the competition before the club’s appropriate stance they had made.” Papal said after the meeting that he and the Northern Blues wished Lambert all the best for his football future, after being cleared to sign with Williamstown. “Kane has developed his game over recent years to the level where he became a regular seniors player and a decorated player within the competition, and we wish him well for the future. “With this issue now resolved, it reminds us that we all want what is best for our clubs, but it should not be at the expense of the rules and the integrity of the competition.”

Those narrow losses see Aces edged out By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Melbourne Aces lost 24 of their 46 regular season Australian Baseball League games this summer. As it turned out, slightly better fortune in any one of those defeats would have been the difference between staying alive in the finals and going home. The Aces were placed fourth, to end the regular season last week at 22-24 the exact same record as the finals-bound Canberra Cavalry. Melbourne was also just one game short of the 23-23 Sydney Blue Sox, who hosted Canberra in the preliminary final series on the weekend. Aces manager Phil Dale told Star of his disappointment in getting so close, yet being so far from the play-off action taking place in Sydney and Perth. “It’s frustrating that we didn’t get to host a final by just one game,” Dale said. “We were solidly competitive right through the summer. “We played a lot of good baseball to put us in that position so you can’t be disappointed in that, but just one more win would’ve put us in a great position.” Everything was on the line for the

Aces going into their last four-game series of the regular season on the road to the Blue Sox. They were able to split the series 2-2 but the damage was done on the opening night with a controversial stolen home base call that led to a 4-3 Sydney win. While that call may well have proved a fatal one on the Aces’ ultimate plight, Dale said he will look back on the 201314 summer somewhat positively after finishing last at 15-31 the year before. Dale particularly noted his side’s improved competitiveness - which included four wins against ABL frontrunner, Perth - throughout the summer. “We were hitting the ball and playing teams more competitively than anybody else,” he said. “I think the games we were losing we were just losing by freaky one-run situations, so they weren’t convincing losses.” Import catcher Ryan Casteel was the clear standout for the Aces this summer, batting at .343 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs on the season. First baseman Jared Schlehuber was also impressive, batting above .300 with seven home runs and 31 RBIs of his own.

Exum heads to NBA SEABROOK local and former Keilor Basketball Association player Dante Exum is officially on his way to the big time. Exum confirmed last week he will nominate for the 2014 NBA draft, bypassing the American College Basketball system. The 18-year-old has also signed with American sports agent Rob Pelinka of Landmark Sports. Pelinka’s other clients include NBA great Kobe Bryant and James Harden of the Houston Rockets. In a statement made to ESPN, Exum and his parents, Cecil and Desiree said: “We are excited to be working with Landmark Sports. Our family felt The Landmark Team represented our style and manner of treating people, and in doing businesses. We also all shared a common commitment to achieving excellence in all things. The fit is just great and we are really pleased to now begin the work.” Exum has been training at the AIS in Canberra for the last few years and is seen as a possible top-five draft choice.

AFTER a brilliant year on the athletics track, Morgan Mitchell was named the Don Deeble Rising Star Award winner for 2012/13. Mitchell impressed the competition’s judges with her outstanding sporting achievements, which included making the Australian Under 19 Athletics Squad and being selected as a member of the senior national 4x400 squad to prepare for the Commonwealth Games, World Relay Championships, World Championships and the Olympic Games in Rio. Mitchell is the fastest female 400 metre runner in Victoria in both senior and junior competition and the second fastest in Australia. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award is run by the Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club and sponsored by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Each month, one nominee receives $1000 towards achieving their sporting goals before the top four athletes are invited back for the competition’s grand final. As the overall winner, Mitchell took home a cheque for $5000 to help her reach her future sporting goals. “I just want to thank all the sponsors and everyone involved with the award,” Mitchell said. “I really appreciate everything they have done for me.

I didn’t expect to win because all the guys in the final were so good. “I’m just really excited and with all the trips I have got coming up, it is a huge help.” Mitchell also thanked her coach, Peter Burke, for the hard work he has done in helping her get to the top. “I have been working with him for 10 years coming up in March/April and he is the best,” Mitchell said. “He has done everything for me. He has taken me to a lot of my training sessions. He has been there when I have been injured. I really respect him and owe everything to him. The best thing about him is that he doesn’t just care for me. He takes time for everyone in the club (Western Athletics). He is like family now.” Also on the night, three cheques for $2000 were presented to the joint runners-up of the award. They were Dejan Vasiljevic (basketball), Nathan Pellissier (table tennis) and Aaron Wain (taekwondo). The action didn’t end there with AFL legend David Parkin on hand as the guest speaker. Parkin gave an enthralling account of his time in the AFL world and the importance of providing support for young athletes.
