TRADING BONANZA FORECAST AS FESTIVAL NUMBERS SWELL
JUNCTION TRADERS BACK COLES’ PLAN ISOBEL COLEMAN AND JIM FAGAN A question mark hangs over Council’s stance on Coles’ proposed Noosa Junction development application after local traders came out in support of it this week.
ISOBEL COLEMAN Local retailers and tourism providers have barely taken a breath since the school holidays ended but there’s more good news on the way.
Noosa enjoyed one of the busiest and most profitable Christmas/New Year breaks in years but February/ March is generally quiet. But not this year. This year we could be looking at a trading bonanza. Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing, presented by Jeep, is heading for its biggest ever international field, with more than 40 per cent of entries received so far coming from overseas. Surfers from nine other countries are now represented, with contingents still expected from Indonesia, Ireland, Italy and South Africa when the event gets under way on March 9. American surfers make up the biggest portion of the internationals, with 35 from continental USA and
six from Hawaii already entered. Japan and New Zealand are the next biggest groups, with smaller teams from France, the United Kingdom and New Caledonia, and single representatives from Portugal and Mexico. If the trend continues, the festival could see as many as 200 overseas competitors. Festival director Phil Jarratt said that Noosa was set for a trading bonanza, with overseas competitors

travelling on average with two other people, and staying for at least nine days. “The UK team is already here, a month out, trying to thaw out before we start. But the majority of our foreign entrants make the festival the centrepiece of a longer vacation. Three weeks in Noosa is not uncommon.” Phil said the strong US dollar had made Noosa more affordable
More than 80 Junction traders signed a petition on Tuesday in favour of the development, despite a recommendation from Mayor Noel Playford and Cr Tony Wellington to refuse it. The Coles’ application calls for a tavern, liquor store, retail shops and salons, offices, adult education and a 26 unit building on the Noosa Bowls Club land which it now owns. Coles has said it will give up some of the land and construct a new two-way entry into the Junction alongside Pinnaroo Park in exchange for council 125-space public car parking area.

For Steve Mawby, organiser of the Noosa Special Nippers - now known as the Seahorses - Saturday afternoon in the radio tower on Noosa Main Beach was very rewarding indeed. For on this occasion Lucia Neely, 15, performed her first ever training session as a radio operator.
Lucia’s time in the tower, plus completion of the official radio course, will see her obtain her radio certificate, enabling her to take her place as a member of a beach patrol roster. Lucia has cerebral palsy but her fighting spirit – and the sup-

family affair for her father, Rob, is the Vice Patrol Captain of Patrol 1. Apart from her lifesaving Lucia, a student at St Teresa’s Catholic College, has another major ambition. A member of Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club, she is determined to represent her country in sailing at the Paralympics. She trains three times a week. Last year, realising the club did not have the type of boat needed for Lucia, members got together and raised $25,000 for the necessary craft and equipment. With the support of a devoted family, surf club mates and friends in the yacht club, there is no doubt that this young lady, who has the heart of a lion and a driving ambition that is second-to-none, could eventually wear the green and gold of this great country.

At a recent meeting, Noosa Council decided it wanted to take a fresh look at what the Biosphere Reserve status means for Noosa and how it should be managed to involve the community even more. Part of the review will involve
community consultation, including the views of the current Noosa Biosphere Board and the Community Sector Boards. But Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot said the council working group doesn’t just want to hear from those currently involved. “We want to hear from people who have a big picture of the way we should be living and working in our environment, and then we want to hear some smart ideas
about how all of that should be managed.” Councillor Abbot says the big challenge of managing the Noosa Biosphere Reserve is finding ways to involve the community more at all levels, and in helping everyone understand that “the Biosphere isn’t just about the environment, it’s about how we live, work and function within it.” “We need to agree on the vision first and then we’ll look at
the structure that can help get us there.” Noosa was awarded UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in 2007, and is run by a council-owned company, Noosa Biosphere Limited, with a governing board and a number of community sector boards. People or groups who want to make a submission should do so in writing to the council’s Chief Executive Officer by Monday, February 24.

Iconic pub celebrates 100 years
JOLENE OGLE The iconic Country Life Hotel, proudly standing at the entrance of Kin Kin, will celebrate 100 years this weekend. To mark this special occasion, a country fair will be held with markets, live music, food and rides for the kids plus huge raffles raising money in support of Variety Queensland.
The hotel was established in 1914 - a decade after the road was built across the range - and has withstood natural disasters, including the severe storms of 1985 which destroyed most of Kin Kin including St Luke’s Anglican Church. In 2009, less than 12 months after extensive renovations, the pub was savaged in torrential flash floods which were so strong a shipping container was pushed

Lake Weyba residents were celebrating this week after the Sunshine Coast Council voted to refuse the part of the controversial Noosa on Weyba development application that was within its regional boundary.
Members of Friends of Lake Weyba were ecstatic when the decision was announced during the Council meeting on January 31. Friends of Lake Weyba President Anita Brake said “it was great to see that Councillors took the advice of their expert staff and independent advisors and voted to refuse the urbanisation of a rare and beautiful environment’.
“Friends of Lake Weyba would like to thank the 1000plus residents and community groups who submitted written objections.” Sunshine Coast Council voted 8-3 in favour of a motion to refuse the application, despite intense lobbying from developer, the Mantle Group. Noosa Shire Council – acting as Assessment Manager - will now examine the whole of the Noosa on Weyba proposal with a final decision likely in early March. Last month Mayor Noel Playford applauded Sunshine Coast Council for letting Noosa make the final decision. He said it was “the right decision because most of the impact of this development application is well and truly inside the Noosa Shire”.
More controversy for Noosa magistrate JOLENE OGLE Controversial Noosa magistrate Bernadette Callaghan was back in the spotlight this week after criticising the Police in court on Tuesday. Ms
Callaghan
told
Police Prosecutor Jamie Baker that there needed to be consistency in sentencing submissions when it came to Domestic Violence Order (DVO) breaches. Ms Callaghan said two weeks ago a man appeared before court charged with breaching a DVO by urinating on and
grabbing the throat of the aggrieved, but Police did not request jail time for the offender. The following day, another man breached a DVO by verbally abusing his victim; in court, the Police requested the offender serve jail time. “Domestic violence is serious, very serious, as
serious in our community as other violence,” Ms Callaghan said. “There needs to be consistency.” Ms Callaghan’s comments came as a 49-yearold Cooroy man appeared on Tuesday, charged with breaching a DVO when he argued with and threatened to kill his victim
while at the Cooroy train station. Mr Baker asked for the offender to serve jail time. Ms Baker said sentencing submissions were made by the Police based on the circumstances of the offence and the offender, and in this case the offender appeared with an already suspended four
month sentence. When sentencing, Ms Callaghan took into consideration the man’s early plea of guilty and the lack of violence in the breach and sentenced the man to serve fourth month’s jail with immediate parole. Ms Callaghan wished the offender “all the best” as he left the court.

Plans to upgrade Noosa’s water treatment plant JIM FAGAN A just completed $19 million spend on Cooroy’s water treatment plant and plans for an $11 million upgrade for Noosa’s water system were outlined to Noosa Council’s general committee on Monday by Unitywater CEO, George Theo.
Led by board chairman, Jim Soorley, a six-person team of senior executives from Unitywater came to meet and greet the new council, now just one month old. During the one-hour presentation councillors heard how Unitywater had a strong focus on reducing costs and was working to reduce water access charges by $52 a year; removing fluoride from Noosa’s water would be difficult; and how there were no plans to sell off the utility. WATER TREATMENT AT COOROY Spending $19 million on
the Cooroy water treatment plant has meant two new communities have been connected to the water grid for the first time, according to Simon Taylor, who heads up the Unitywater’s infrastructure and capital delivery group. “It means we don’t have to have all those environmental issues we usually have to deal with locally because they are connected into the treatment plant. Also, we have a wetlands there which is a very sympathetic way of polishing that volume of water before the water is discharged back to the environment.” Unitywater CEO George Theo: “A spin off benefit from those wetlands is that the gum leaves we grow in places we irrigate we gather and give to Australia Zoo to feed the koalas. They’re putting on a bit of weight!” Cr Bob Abbott: “These same wetlands have been there a long time. Is it still the same basic framework, still the same number of ponds?” Mr Taylor: “Exactly the same thing. Pomona is hooked
concern people have is not so much water charges but connection fees. I’m sure you are aware of it.” Mr Theo said Unitywater was doing “everything we can to produce pricing guidelines and give customers as much ability as possible to influence the size of their bill. The $52 reduction “wasn’t the end of the journey. There are more years of reform in front of us to reduce access charges.”
Unitywaterboard chairman, Jim Soorley, and Noosa Mayor Noel Playford at the Council Chambers on Monday up to Cooroy as well. The plant is built for ultimate capacity for Cooroy and Pomona.” Mr Theo: “The plant has been completed for a 2026 outlook and we would ask the Council’s help to encourage the local community to hook up to the plant. We have invested $19 million in it. “Noosa treatment plant is going to have an 11 million upgrade and we’re going through that process at the moment. It
was originally earmarked for a $22 million upgrade but we’re still looking at outcomes. It’s still a work in progress.” CONNECTION FEES CUT BY $52 Unitywater was going through a transition to reduce water access charges on the Sunshine Coast by $52, Mr Theo said. He was replying to a question by Cr Frank Wilkie who said, “The biggest
NO GUARANTEES WITH FLUORIDATION Cr Frank Pardon said council was aware of a petition for removing fluoride from Noosa’s water. “We may get a massive response. I don’t know yet.” Commenting on this, Mr Soorley said, “This week the European Union banned fluoridation in every country in the Union. There are only two countries currently dosing, that is, the UK and Ireland. PRIVATISATION IS “NOT ON” Privatising Unitywater is definitely not on Chairman
Soorley’s agenda. “The silliest decision on earth would be to break up Unitywater,” he said. “You’ve seen our efficiencies and you’ve seen how we are driving the business. You’ve seen our environmental resolve.” He was answering Cr Wilkie who said: “Consideration is being given by Government to selling off assets like water and there is concern about the pricing of water in the community already if a critical infrastructure like water is sold off. Can you tell us where that discussion is and is Unitywater going to be sold off?” Mr Soorley: “The council participation agreement and the State legislation forbid it. The Federal Government can do what it likes but the State would have to change the legislation and empower the councils to make a decision to sell. If someone says to you, ‘Oh let’s get rid of Unitywater. The water will be cheaper.”It won’t. It will be more expensive. It would be suicide to say we were going to sell off water.”
Invitation for Submissions
Noosa Biosphere Reserve Management Noosa Council is reviewing the current management model for the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. Noosa achieved UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status in 2007, and its governance is under a council owned company Noosa Biosphere Limited. The current management model of a governance board and a series of community boards covering key sectors, has been in place for 5 years. The new council was elected on a platform of community participation and the review is seen as an exciting opportunity for the community to have a say on how we can best achieve the ultimate environment and economy we wish to live and work in. Council is interested to hear from residents and local organisations that have great ideas for the future of Noosa – what we want to achieve, how we can achieve it and ideas for a management model to achieve these goals.
How to get involved: • Interested residents and local organisations are invited to make a submission to Noosa Council outlining their ideas. • Submitters are asked to first outline what they see as their vision for the future of The Noosa Biosphere Reserve, and then outline their idea for the most appropriate management model. • Submitters of the most constructive ideas will be invited to provide a presentation to a series of facilitated workshops in March, 2014. • Submissions need to be in writing and addressed to Chief Executive Officer and received by 5pm Monday February 24, 2014.

Holiday shuttle bus costs sought JIM FAGAN Noosa Council is expected to approve a free holiday bus shuttle service during Easter (April 14 to April 21) at its meeting tonight.
This was recommended at the council’s general meeting on Monday but not before considerable discussion on whether ratepayers were getting value-for-money, Mayor Noel Playford saying he had no idea what the costs per head per journey were. “If we are talking about trying to solve the problem of congestion in Hasting Street, how does it help with a free bus service from Peregian Beach to the Junction or from Tewantin to Cooran or Tewantin to the Junction? Has anyone ever looked at why are we spending $300,000 a year or something like that? Are we using a sledgehammer here to crack a nut?” He asked if council transport project officers could obtain for council after Easter a cost per trip. “In other words if we are providing free bus transport to people, say, $10 per head per journey or maybe it’s 50 cents, I have absolutely no idea, could you at

We started this back in the 90s. It was different then and it has developed over the years but it’s not enough to say we keep it because some people like it. “The argument should be what
are we spending the money for? Is this the correct solution and the most appropriate solution? I don’t think we have actually investigated enough to tailor the solution to what the problem is. “And I’m not sure of what effect it has on traffic. Junction traders back Coles’ plan FROM PAGE 1 At Monday’s Noosa Shire Council general committee meeting, a motion by Cr Frank Pardon to defer a decision to allow more talks with community groups and stakeholders was defeated. The committee declared its opposition to the application and there were no dissensions. Mayor Playford said: “What this application does is increase commercial and retail far above
what is required. Last year, when a report was done by a professional consultant and sent to Sunshine Coast Council, there was something like 12 per cent to 13 per cent retail vacancy in the Junction and there were reasonably high vacancy rates in Noosaville, Hastings Street and Noosa Civic.” Cr Frank Pardon said he had walked around the Junction, talking to community groups and traders, “trying to get a handle on this vexing issue.
“We might end up by refusing the application and that would be fine or we might have a raft of outcomes and be better off. We’ve just been elected and I would just like to hear a bit more.” Supporting Cr Pardon, Cr Bob Abbot said, “I have some concerns because there has been a reasonable amount of work done that has been approved by a previous council with regards to the plans and a considerable amount of work done within the
community with regards to this site. I’ve also got some real concerns about our ability to defend a refusal.” Speaking on behalf of the Noosa Junction Traders Association, Sue Pollard said while there were some concerns about the inclusion of another tavern, the majority of traders were in support, believing it would bring more shoppers into the precinct. Noosa Shire Council will discuss the issue tonight.

Aus Bowls told: Start of an era for “stop the rot” Tewantin bowlers JIM FAGAN
JIM FAGAN
Some Sunshine Beach bowls clubs like Peregian Beach, Cooroy and Noosa Heads may be coming to the end of an era but bowlers at the Tewantin-Noosa club and its chairman John Pulham have other ideas about their doors ever being closed.
With too many lawn bowls clubs shutting their doors, a frustrated Bob King has told Bowls Australia and Bowls Queensland leaders that bowls “is going backwards and it’s time to stop the rot.”
Bob King of Noosa Heads Bowls Club ing power of Australian bowlers. “This will be the only way we will be able to compete with Coles, Woolworths, hotels, taverns, liquor outlets, RSL clubs and social clubs. Currently we, and other small clubs, have to buy from bottle stores.” Asked about the club’s search for a new site, he said it was still looking. There was something in mind but “it was too early to say anything. Let’s just say we’re hopeful we may be lucky enough to find a place for ourselves.” And what would happen if nothing was found before May next year? We have a large sum of money in the bank and last September we closed our books to membership, leaving us with 180 or so members. The money is distributed under the Charities Act and must go to a like organisation or to charity. “In the event of us having to close down, each member who wants to continue playing will take a portion to another club like, say, Tewantin, Coolum or Pomona.”
After a period of trading losses – last year it was $107,000 – the club has tightened up its spending and, according to John “working like hell to attract new members.” A Noosa businessman and former Noosa deputy mayor and councillor, John is a volunteer and has been in charge for 12 months. He has signed up for another 12 and expects the club will be well on the way to being profitable by the end of the year. “One of the first things I did was declare the position of operational manager null and void and, with the support of the board, I put a stop to other activities which were not profitable, saving $160,000. “We’re promoting the sport to let people know it is not an old people’s game but one you can enjoy at any age. We’ve applied for a grant to buy smaller bowls so school kids can come and play here. We haven’t been able to get a program like this in the past and we’re pushing ahead for it now. “The idea is that we’ll supply the bowls so parents won’t have to spend up to $600 on the sets.” He said the club was putting a lot more effort to bringing in people, introducing “some amaz-
John Pulham ing specials at our bistro. On Sundays kids are free”. He said the club was also promoting itself for major carnivals. “On February 16 we’re holding the Australian and New Zealand Railway Institute Bowls Carnival. It goes for 10 days. We have three greens and we’re seen as an excellent venue.” Asked what he thought of the probability of a substantial sum of money coming to the club if the Noosa Heads club cannot find another venue, John said: “I hope they do find something. I’ve told our board not to raise the subject at board meetings. We’re not counting on it.”

Bob is chairman of the management committee of Noosa Heads Bowls Club, which sold its freehold site at Noosa Junction for $3.2 million to Coles in November 2011 to clear its debts and is desperately looking for another venue before it has to leave in May next year. “In a short space of time the Sunshine Coast District Bowls’ Association has lost Peregian Beach, Maroochy Swan, Mooloolah Valley and Montville. This week the Cooroy club was put on the market and maybe soon to go could be Noosa Heads. The loss of freehold land makes it even worse,” Bob said. He told Noosa Today the failed policy of trying to attract young and very young people should be secondary to focussing on the 35 to 45-year-old market. “All aspects of our game are being run by people who are too old. The young kids do not and cannot be administrators but people 35 and up will bring new ideas and expertise to administration at all levels.” He said it was a shame that much of members’ affiliation fees are spent on so called elite bowlers for no return of new memberships to clubs. “Look at the newspaper coverage. It is almost nil. When was the last time you saw a photograph of an Australian who won a world title or Commonwealth gold medal. If anything is used, we have to approach the paper and provide the information and the photograph.” He also called for the setting up of a cartel for food, drink and sponsorships using the buy-

Setting the record straight NOOSA – THE WAY AHEAD GREG REDDAWAY
It’s timely to take a moment to look back over what I have covered and why, in regard to Noosa Next Generation, or Noosa 2.0.
I am going to deal with why first, as there has been some questioning of motives. There are two aspects to this, firstly why we need to do anything at all, and secondly why I am agitating for reform. Why we need to do anything? Noosa has in the past embarked on a significant, some would say radical, approach to town planning which has ramifications right through our region. I am an unapologetic fan of the population cap. I think it is a shining light in a sometimes bleak landscape of over development. However, I don’t see why the two Es (ecology and economy) have to be mutually exclusive. We in Noosa have become expert at saying no. We have made a science of it. Again, to be clear, I am a supporter of the ‘no’ in so far as stopping inappropriate development. I wonder though, if we
shouldn’t focus some energy on working out a culture of ‘yes’ in an effort to continue to evolve and improve. I have argued there are particular sectors of an economy which we can cherry pick to fit nicely with the existing Noosa way of life, namely higher education and the arts. In follow up articles I will argue for a wildlife sanctuary in the hinterland and a ramping up of the promotion of our sporting facilities to attract elite sporting teams. I wonder also about agriculture and whether it could make a much bigger contribution to Noosa. We all know about the concept of ‘food miles’ and how an avocado grown within 20 kilometres of here will be shipped to Sydney, only to be shipped back to Woolies in Noosa. I think there are aspects of Noosa which could be enlivened by encouraging vibrancy by introducing opportunities for those ‘hip and groovy’ types to live in slightly higher density around Noosa Junction. (That one may bring the blood pressure up a bit!). So if any of these ideas, or others which fit in to the Noosa lifestyle, are good, then we need to build a culture of ‘yes’ around them, provided they are well designed and executed. To be clear, I am not argu-

Bindi’s back on the books Increased opportunities and jobs will keep our young people on the Coast. Bindi Irwin, 15, who begins the second year of her Certificate III in Business at Sunshine Coast TAFE this month, believes more young people should consider the institution.
“I would recommend TAFE in a heartbeat to other young people, it’s such a wonderful way of following your dreams and passions and making them come to life,” she said. ing for any ratepayer subsidy here. These ideas have to stand on their merits, but, and it’s a big but, they need to be part of the new vision for Noosa and have ‘positive advocacy’ from our council. As to why I push for reform. First let’s deal with whose agenda I’m pushing. I am not now, nor have I ever been a member of Noosa Parks Association. I believe they are an extraordinary organisation, and there is nothing I can add to their work. I currently hold no offices in any organisation in Noosa. In the past I have been Vice President of Tewantin Community Association, a director, and chairman of the local
Bendigo Banks, a committee member, and president of Noosa Biosphere Association and a committee member of Friends of Noosa. The articles I have penned are based on my belief that Noosa has achieved a place of excellence when it comes to its ecology, and so far that’s where the story seems to end. I want us to use the same drivers which took us to be an ecological exemplar, to make us an exemplar in higher education and the arts and other fields which the community may agree on. Utopian? Probably, but change is coming, and if we don’t have a guiding hand in it, it is unlikely to be the change we want.

NOOSA TODAY Sue and Clinton Stanley with Clive Palmer at the awards

FANCY FEAST
Award winner says battle’s not over ISOBEL COLEMAN Cooroy local Sue Stanley - named Volunteer of the Year at Friday’s Sunshine Coast Sports Star of the Year Awards – says she will continue to fight for the rights of Down Syndrome swimmers.
Retiring from her many committee roles after more than two decades, Sue said Queensland was behind the times and we mustn’t give up. Sue’s son Clinton is a multiple record-breaking and gold medal winning Down Syndrome swimmer – and the inspiration behind her battle for more equality for disabled athletes. “We have pushed for more than 15 years for Down Syndrome swimmers to have their own classification. “At present, they compete under S14 –
67C
swimmers with an intellectual disability - but that’s too general,” she said. “Clinton has had to compete against 6ft men who can drive a car but are classed ‘slow learners’. That’s not fair – it makes no allowance for stature, muscle tone etc, which affects those with Down Syndrome.” Sue believes it’s especially unfair when Down Syndrome swimmers have represented Australia – and won – all over the world. “That’s why we started the Down Syndrome Down Under Swimming Organisation in 2005. Since 2008, thanks to these swimmers, Australia’s been world champion three times. This year they will compete again, in Mexico. “The classification has to change sooner or later, so that Down Syndrome swimmers have their own classification. It’s happened already in NSW and Victoria. Until then, we’ll just keep getting out there and showing what they can do.”

It’s a family affair! Not only did Sue Stanley take out Volunteer of the Year at the Sports Awards, but son Clinton was recognised for his induction into the Sunshine Coast Sports Hall of Fame.
Sue – who described it as a huge honour, in front of 500 people – knew she was a finalist but didn’t think she would win. “I was up against rugby so didn’t think I stood a chance,” she said.
Sue has been a volunteer for the Special Olympics and Down Syndrome for 22 years. In that time, her many achievements include starting the Down Syndrome Down Under Swimming Organisation in 2005, and organising multiple state and national championships. She has held many key positions, including president for the Sunshine Coast and Queensland Special Olympics Committee, and a seat on the Queensland Board for Special Olympics.

New faces at Harvey Norman Harvey Norman Noosaville now offers twice the customer service, with the addition of two new managers in the technology and electrical departments.
Anthony Venturato joins the Harvey Norman team as the new Technology Manager. Anthony said he began his career as a casual sales assistant at Harvey Norman, paying his way through an electronic engineering degree. “I found myself thoroughly enjoying the exciting changes in technology, the different people and personalities you get to meet daily including our great staff,” Anthony said. The everyday challenges that the retail industry “throws at you” made a career transition an easy choice for Anthony. Also joining the team is Rod Ayache, who is the new manager of the electrical department. Rod has worked for Harvey Norman for 14 years and said he first entered the electrical industry through a love of electrical appliances and the joy of selling. Customer service is the key to a successful business, according to Rod, who loves the challenge of matching the customer to the best product.
Trading bonanza forecast as festival numbers swell FROM PAGE 1
READY FOR ANYTHING: Rod Ayache, Doug ‘Dougie’ Young and Anthony Venturato. “Plus, we will always give the cheapest price,” Rod said. Rod and Anthony join Doug ‘Dougie’ Young, who has been the head of Harvey Norman’s furniture department for more than 14 years. “I started in the furniture industry straight out of Grade 12 and have been with Harvey Norman since age 21,” Doug said. “Twenty-one years later, I have had four Harvey Norman franchises with my first being here in Noosa
when I first opened the store 14 years ago.” Doug assures his customers that no-one knows furniture and bedding better than his staff. “All of our staff have worked many years in the furniture and bedding industry, with at least six years up to 30 years experience.” All three managers say quality, value and service is what sets Harvey Norman apart, so be sure to drop in and say hello to the enhanced team at Harvey Norman.
“We’ve put the hard yards in with international and on-line marketing, plus we’re on the back of a couple of very good years for surf, so we’re reaping the benefits of that, but I think it’s also the fact that there has been a lot of positive word-of-mouth from those who have been to previous Noosa festivals,” Phil said. “They go home raving about the beautiful waves, the beach bar and free entertainment, the beauty of the National Park, the great restaurants and bars around town, and their mates all go out and book tickets.” Tourism Noosa chief Damien Massingham said the Festival of Surfing ticked all the boxes when it comes to delivering visitors from outside the Noosa region. “The latest indications that 40 per cent of competitors are coming from overseas is certainly great news. With the event running for seven days, competitors and spectators are staying in town for several days and this is good news for the Noosa economy with economic dispersal happening throughout the region,” he said.
“Ultimately the entire Noosa community benefits from events like the Festival of Surfing, as more visitor spending retains and creates local jobs. This is a great reminder of how important events like this are to the Noosa economy and attribute Noosa to being known as the events capital of Queensland. I encourage all locals to provide a warm welcome to these visitors to Noosa when they arrive.” CCIQ Noosa Chamber of Commerce President Sarah Fisher agreed. “The Festival has become a highlight of the Noosa events calendar and presents a great opportunity for the business community to capitalise on the increased traffic to the region. What is most pleasing to hear, is the large number of overseas visitors Mr Jarratt is expecting at this year’s festival. This is a great sign for our tourism operators and shows the region’s economy is well on the way back. “The chamber encourages all local businesses to get involved with the festival and showcase our region to the world.” Read the latest on the Noosa Festival of Surfing on page 39.

spotlight on Noosa Junction Much more than just a street With a revamped streetscape and a plethora of community events, Noosa Junction is fast becoming the entertainment hub of Noosa Shire.
Located on the main esplanade, Sunshine Beach Road, The Junction is more than just a street when it comes to life with pantomimes for the children, food and wine festivals for the adults and great family fun all year round. Completed in November 2012, Council’s streetscape program turned the street into a cultural and artistic environment with public art works throughout. The new clock, located outside the cinema, is fast becoming the talk of the town with its “steam punk” theme and growling monster who pops out on the hour. Designed by artist Russell Anderson, in conjunction with primary school students, the clock is a shiny new addition to the leafy street. New light-up banksia pods,
designed by Lucas Salton, are also an artistic addition which feature on four pedestrian crossings down the street. The new-look Junction was formally opened with an Oscar-style street party complete with red carpet and festive celebrations. It really is amazing how much can be packed into one street, with over 300 stores and businesses plus Noosa 5 Cinemas. At the end of Sunshine Beach Road, The J houses even more events, activities and theatre productions. Home of the best children’s entertainment for the school holidays with the Jumpin’ at the J funland, The J also offers council-funded entertainment as well as international comedy stars, theatre and is home to the Noosa campus of the University of the Sunshine Coast. If you haven’t been to The Junction for a while, maybe it’s time to take a casual stroll down the beautiful street to enjoy public art, specialty stores and local cafes.

NOOSA TODAY Judy and Peter Malzard
Fate lends a helping hand JOLENE OGLE Not everyone believes in fate, but it was an unexpected turn of events that led Peter and Judy Malzard to the impoverish classrooms of Bospo Village in Cambodia.
“Peter wanted to climb Mount Kinabalu but he got altitude sickness. So we were in Phuket and he said he wanted to try again,” Judy said. “Usually you have to book six months in advance but I emailed the company anyway.” Judy was pleasantly surprised when the company replied to say there was one position available for Peter.
Strangely, any further contact with the company went unanswered and the Malzard’s found themselves in Phuket wondering what to do next. Judy said the couple decided to try volunteering and found the Khmer New Generation Organisation (KNGO) for English teacher volunteers in Bospo Village, Cambodia. Founded by five university students, including the Bospo village program founder Sun Saveth, KNGO is a not-for-profit community organisation that provides free education programs to children in need. “We said we would try (volunteering) for a few days but ended up staying six weeks,” Judy said. Very quickly, the 400 students
Rock on for a good cause ISOBEL COLEMAN Once you’ve been to Peter and Judy Malzard’s monster fundraising garage sale on Saturday, head over to Valdora on Sunday to support the Project Vietnam Inc Rock Fest.
PVI has been based on the Sunshine Coast for 25 years, carrying out humanitarian works in Vietnam and Cambodia. Totally self-funded, PVI holds two fund-
raising events per year, the first for 2014 being Rock Fest, at Valdora Hall, off Yandina-Coolum Road, on February 16, 2pm to 6pm. Tickets are $20, which includes live music with The Foggs and Flackoes, and light food. There will also be a charity auction, and drinks are available for purchase. Spokesman David Simpson said 40 to 60 self-funded volunteers go to Vietnam and Cambodia every year, to carry out rebuilding works for orphanages, schools, kindergartens and health care centres.
“This is called the Building Team. We also have a Medication Education Team, headed by Dr Gail Waterhouse, who has been awarded an OAM for her services,” David said. “We are also involved with the distribution of wheelchairs and recycled reading glasses for both countries.” To find out more about the organisation see www.projectvietnam.com For Rock Fest tickets phone Noel McCart on 0481 314 380 or 5473 0581.
found their way into the hearts of Peter and Judy who are now working to set up a fundraising charity based in Australia to raise enough funds to build a classroom. Currently, the students can be taught in the state school classrooms during the seasonal break of teaching, or when the classroom is empty during the day. Judy said Mr Saveth had started to build a classroom for the children, where they could learn all year round without being “at the mercy of the state school”. “But there is only a roof and no walls,” Judy said. Desperate to help the students of this small village, Peter and Judy will hold a monster garage sale on Saturday, February 15, 7am to 2pm, at the Noosa Dol-
phins Rugby Club oval, Sunshine Beach. All donations gladly accepted, including furniture, household goods, clothing and children’s toys. Through their fundraising, Peter and Judy said they hope to complete the building of the classroom and help students learn valuable skills that will allow them to flourish in life, as well as implement sanitisation, food and environmental programs in the community. “You can help give these children and their families a better future by donating any unwanted saleable items,” Judy said. Phone 5447 3667 or 0430 845 693 to arrange the collection or drop-off of items for sale.
Vale Dave Power, athlete PHIL JARRATT Dave Power, who died in Noosa last weekend at 85, won Olympic and Commonwealth medals for Australia as a distance runner.
But to me he will always be a hero because when he wasn’t winning races, he was behind the teller’s window at my local bank, getting on with life, putting food on the table for his family. That’s the way it was for elite athletes back then, more than half a century ago. When he went away to represent his
country, Dave had to take unpaid leave. A disciple of Percy Cerrutty’s unorthodox training methods, Dave would prepare for a big event by running up and down the sand hills behind the beach where I was learning to surf. A local hero of humble disposition, he would always respond to a wave. In the 1980s Dave moved to Noosa, where he worked in real estate and was one of the people who helped create the Noosa Triathlon. Dave died peacefully after a long illness. His funeral will be held at the Catholic Church, Tewantin, at 11am today.

IS IT FAIR? The prohibitive costs of de- amalgamation have turned out to be a myth and some benefits are already apparent. De-amalgamation is likely to cost about $3.5 million rather than the $11.5 number touted by George Street (NT, Jan 16). Even these lower costs are burdened by the unfortunate termination of 79 excessive staff built up by SCRC’s bloated bureaucracy that were unable to be offered employment at an efficient and effective Noosa Shire Council. In addition to promised superior services, financial transparency has already resulted from the referendum granted reluctantly last March. Free Noosa now tells us that the SCRC was using the hidden tax of about $160 per household, still being collected by Unitywater, to subsidize developers to “build and benefit”. Five developers in Noosa Shire were awarded $172,000 under this scheme that the new Noosa Council has rightfully abandoned. Unfortunately Noosa is still forced to be serviced by Unitywater (alias Goldwater) and it remains owned and controlled by the now smaller Sunshine Coast (SCC) and Moreton Bay Regional Councils (MBRC). Should councils be allowed to use their water monopoly businesses to overcharge ratepayers to subsidize developers and keep it a secret? Is it fair that Noosa (and Coolum) households who love to water their gardens are forced to subsidize developer mates of SCC and MBRC in future?

A FEW CREDENTIALS The letter from Edward Muir published in your issue of January 23 contains so many inaccuracies I was at first tempted to ignore it as the ranting of someone who really doesn’t understand what EDV stands for. But I couldn’t let it go by and possibly mislead others. So, a few credentials.
First, I’m a long-term resident of this area 31 years in fact, all around Doonan and Verrierdale. So I make claim to having a better feeling for the aspirations of our “locals” than does Edward Muir. (How many years make him a longterm resident?) During that time I’ve employed local people in our own businesses in the area, in agriculture and real estate, and taken part in many community activities to assist the development of the area. I was President of the group which instituted the observance of Anzac Day at Verrierdale Hall, which is now a well attended community occasion. And I was one of the foundation members of EDV. I am not a wealthy retiree. In fact, I don’t know too many in this area who qualify. What most retirees I know appear to have done, is that they have worked hard all their lives and sensibly provided for their retirement. As well, there are still a lot of working people in this area who want to live out of the hustle and bustle of the coastal strip, in modest homes, perhaps not the values of Sunshine Beach. EDV is not anti-progress, or anti-business, or anti-jobs. It has nothing in its mission statement which suggests any of these attitudes. Nor is it made up of wowsers “attempting to force their own morality on everyone.” (def) It is committed however, “to preservation of the environment, to seeking increased road and sidewalk maintenance, to the establishment of a hard rubbish collection, to the protection of visual amenity, to consistent application of the Town Planning Schemes and advocacy for worthwhile community projects”. All these parallel the attitudes of the previous and the new Noosa Council - but not necessarily the SCC. So why wouldn’t we want to be a part of Noosa Shire? The EDV region did not prosper under SCRC. In fact, the initial impetus for forming the EDV group was because of significant resident concerns about the then Maroochy Council and the lack of support from the then Councillors. Doonan residents who lived in the Noosa Shire paid much lower rates than their neighbours with the same land value, who lived just over the boundary, yet our Noosa neighbours received more regular services. E Muir should understand that the call to be a part of Noosa Shire is not basically geographical. It is called “community of interest”. We in the EDV not only use the local community trade and business services in Eumundi, Cooroy and Doonan but we shop in Noosa, work in Noosa, use the trade and professional services of Noosa; swim in Noosa; dine in Noosa. And get buried or cremated in Noosa.

JOIN US, JOHN John Lobb wonders why an NBA President resigned. Well the answer is simple. Greg had work commitments that prevented him giving the time necessary. But he is still contributing to Noosa community with ideas for the future. How about you explain to us how you came up with the high costs of de-amalgamation that now appear to be totally discredited. Please explain why you are obsessed with Noosa when you don’t even live here? What about the costs of the computer system that did not eventuate? How about your colleague Jeff Nuske’s claim that all tradies in Noosa would lose their jobs if Noosa de-amalgamated? How many members does True Blue have now - does it still exist? Surely there is much more for your enquiring mind to address than the trivial matters you seem to find so important only because they relate to Noosa. And John, for your information, I am on the NBA committee and a member of NPA (despite erroneous statements to the contrary). I was also on an NBL Sector Board and believe the current community review for the future of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve is bright as people of good will look at solution for the Noosa Community. Already people with opposing views are coming together in a spirit of co-operation. John Lobb, why don’t you join us in our future? All you have to do is stop the silly attacks, open your eyes and ears and see the reality of our new Noosa and what we, the residents and ratepayers fought so hard for.

UPSIDE DOWN John Turner (NT Jan 23) believes that because he is correct about the physics of a greenhouse, his credibility somehow transfers to the next ridiculous comments he makes about the IPCC and climate change. For John “Lewis Carroll” Turner to claim that the entirely science-based, non-partisan International Panel on Climate Change is a political lobby group is to entirely misunderstand the role that science plays in the advancement of human knowledge. The IPCC was established by the United Nations in 1988 to inform the world, on an ongoing basis, of the state of knowledge about the effects that increased levels of CO2 is expected to have on our climate. They do this by scouring the scientific journals of the world for credible, real world evidence both for and against the theory of climate change. They are scientists. They seek the truth, unlike JT. Far from being a lobby group, they are the expert eyes and ears that society needs to provide us with information to make long term decisions about things of which political groups are generally ignorant. In typical “Alice in Wonderland” fashion JT has turned everything upside down. It he who is the lobbyist trying to cast doubt on the serious state of our climate, for purely political reasons. He claims that the last 17 year pause in the increase in global warming was not predicted by the IPCC. What was not predicted was that 1998 was going to be the world’s hottest year on record. If we continue the graph of global temperatures omitting that peak year, there is a clear increase in world temperatures, concluding with 2013 being the sixth hottest on record.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day comes this romantic comedy written and directed by Tom Gormican in his directorial debut.
Big Kitty will have you purring If you’re a jazz fan you had better get in quick for tickets for this one! Noosa Heads Jazz Club is expecting a big crowd for hot favourite, Matt Eves with Big Kitty. Lead feline and driving force behind (and usually in front of) the Scaredy Cats is otherwise known as Anna Eves, whose searing lead
vocals and buckets of sass set the tone for the kind of night a Big Kitty crowd is ready for! With Anna Eves on vocals, Matt Eves on bass, Rupert Jenner on guitar, Coojee Timms on drums, Mal Wood on trumpet and Neil Whickham on tenor sax. This is what one reviewer had to say: “And now for something completely different – well, not so completely, but certainly a depar-
ture from the ‘classic jazz’ and its modern interpretations as played by most featured bands. Big Kitty is an exciting blend of musical styles that draw on the era that preceded rock n’ roll and followed on from the swing era, the jazz revival and emergence of be-bop in the 1940s. This was an era of rapid transition in both a musical development sense and in the technology of music reproduction
and presentation that set the stage for some of the musical revolutions of the 50s”. Don’t miss Big Kitty on Saturday, February 15, 7.30pm, at Bicentennial Hall, Sunshine Beach. Members $20, guests $25. Table bookings, budget bar, No BYO alcohol. Preferred seating for early ticket sales on 5447 2229.
Originally titled, Are We Officially Dating, the movie stars stars Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B Jordan. The script was featured as one of the top comedy screenplays in the 2010 Hollywood Black List of best un-produced screenplays.
Life’s a drag for cabaret star Carlotta Get swept up in the glamour of Australia’s most iconic cabaret entertainer, Carlotta, when she performs this Saturday at Tewantin Noosa RSL, from 8pm.
Carlotta began her career as an original member of the long-running Les Girls cabaret show, which began in Kings Cross in 1963 and ran un-
til 1992. The star performer of the show, Carlotta was also one of the inspirations for the famous Australian movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Carlotta’s legendary career speaks for itself, as few performers have risked as much artistically and personally with greater frequency or success than Carlotta. As well as her cabaret perfor-
mances at Les Girls she has also toured with other performances, written two successful books and has appeared on the television and big screen. With a career spanning over five decades Carlotta continues to entertain as only she can with dazzling gowns, stunning jewellery and brilliant shows.
Enjoy her outrageously funny journey and brutally honest look at the ruthless entertainment industry. Why not add to the fun and have an affordable night with dinner in the Bistro followed up with a fantastic free show from a world class performer. Bookings for dinner and the courtesy bus are available at reception or on 5447 1766.

It was 31 degrees when I walked into the room to meet the group of spinners, knitters, weavers, and felt-makers, and the thought of woollen clothing and knitting seemed to me a little absurd.
NOOSA PARTY HIRE CELEBRATES 30 YEARS MARQUEE COMPETITION Book and fully pay for the hire of a 2014 marquee during the months of January and February to be eligible to enter our competition to receive a 50% (limit $1300.00) discount on your marquee hire.
But no, there they were, sitting in a convivial circle alternating spinning wheels, knitting needles and crochet hooks. For these ladies, by their own admission, are ‘obsessive’ in their chosen pastime, even to the point of having portable spinning wheels that can be taken on a plane, or secreted in the back of a car! I must say, watching fleece being pulled and fed through deft fingers in one steady, easy movement, as it becomes twisted into recognisable yarn, and wound onto bobbins whilst spinner’s feet maintain a constant treadle motion, is quite mesmerising. In fact, they were all in agreement that it can be very meditative. These ancient crafts are taken seriously every Thursday morning at Wallace House, where members of the group meet to exchange patterns, ideas, and designs. I learned that spinning wheels can be very different – in fact, the group has wheels of a number of styles, ages, and makes, from a Polish wheel to compact portable ones that simply fold up and pack into a carry bag. But back to the yarn! I learned about the process of the fleece being carded and formed into what looked like beautifully tactile swathes of
cotton wool but that morning there was silk, alpaca, and wool being spun. This can be bought and mixed to order, in differing colour and texture. But ‘raw’ fleece that comes directly from the animal is special. And, did you know that other materials that can be spun into luxury yarn include – wait for it – wool, silk, bamboo, DOG, alpaca, rabbit and cotton! The animals have all, at some time, been relieved of their hot winter coats in order to make warm winter garments for us – it makes sense, really. I also learned about a worldwide competition called the ‘Back to Back Challenge’ involving sheep shearers, spinners, and knitters. The challenge is to knit a garment in a day from sheep’s back to human back! Hence ‘back to back’! The current world record set by a team from Merriwa, NSW stands at four hours, 51 minutes and 14 seconds. Wow! Nimble fingers or what? The Challenge started in England, in 1811 when a thousand pound wager was made to make a coat from a sheep’s back to a man’s back in one day. The coat was completed in 13 hours, and the sheep was eaten afterwards with much quaffing of beer to celebrate! The Challenge was sparked anew in 1992 by a keen young spinner wanting to raise funds for cancer research. This group doesn’t hold many competitions, but judging by the array of unique finished garments and complicated knitting I saw coming off busy needles, and intricately designed crochet work cascading from skilled hands, they would walk off with all the prizes. In fact, there is to be an exhibition of their work throughout March, at the Harbourside Gallery, Noosa Marina – and I recommend a visit. Jazz at Cooran to sponsor German opera JIM FAGAN In an unusual twist a jazz concert on Saturday, February 15 at Cooran will sponsor opera. Organiser, Hausmusik, plans to give the proceeds from the jazz evening to Noosa’s world premiere of a shortened version of Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde at The J on Saturday, April 26.
Noosa opera lovers used to hearing baritone-turned-tenor, German stage and concert star, Hans-Georg Wimmer, sing their favourites arias will now hear him caressing musical showstoppers like Summertime and Besame mucho. An excited Hans-Georg had just finished rehearsing with Brisbane soprano Renae Suttie when he spoke to Noosa Today. “I have always wanted to sing jazz with my operatic voice and
Hans-Georg Wimmer it will be fun to sing songs like New York, New York. Renae has a beautiful high soprano voice and she is classically trained. We’ll meld very well.” Hans-Georg, 54, has a
special fondness for Noosa. He and his partner Thomas Sydow have a house in Doonan which they have owned for 10 years. During the German spring and
summer months they share their time between their houses in Cologne and Berlin and as the weather gets colder they chase the sun and enjoy Noosa beaches. A Wagnerian helden tenor Hans-Georg is particularly excited about Hausmusik plans to stage Tristan and Isolde at The J. “Proceeds from the jazz will subsidise ticket prices for Tristan and Isolde. “We want to keep the entrance costs down to a level where people can afford it. We will have a 55-piece symphony orchestra and we are bringing soprano, Julia Borchert, who has sung Parsifal at Bayreuth from Germany to sing Isolde. “Another world premiere of the shortened opera will be held in Germany in November.” All That Jazz for Valentine’s Day is on Saturday, February 15, 7pm, at Cooran Hall, Cooran. Blob’s Wave (a fable) This is what our beach looks like in the wet. A First Point freight train under gloomy skies
LIFE OF BRINE PHIL JARRATT
“Australia All Over, this is Macca. G’day.”
“G’day Macca, how’re ya going? Blob here.” “G’day Bob, good mate, yeah, no, real good. How’re you goin’ Bob?” “Yeah, no, good mate, goin’ real good too mate. But it’s Blob, not Bob.” “What’s that, Bob? Beautiful day, ay? Where are you calling from, Bob? “From Noosa, Macca, and me name’s Blob, not Bob.” “Blob, ay?” What’s that, a dago name or something, Blob?” “No mate, it’s me nickname, mate. Yeah, no. The Blob. Me mates call me The Blob.” “Why do they call you that, Blob?” “Dunno, Macca. Yeah, no. Probably because I’m just always here at the beach, just hanging, ya know. Like a big blob, kind of thing. I don’t do nothin’, I just hang here, day in, day out.” “That’s nice, Blob, lovely. And where are you now, Blob?” “At the beach, Macca, just hangin’.” “Well, it’s a great day for that, Blob. Beautiful country, Australia, especially for hangin’ at the beach. What beach are you hangin’ at, Blob?” “Noosa, mate. I already told you that. Don’t you listen to what people say?” “Not as a rule, Blob. No mate, beautiful country we got here, Australia, and Noosa’s a lovely part of it. That’s in Queensland, right?” “Yeah, no, yeah, Macca. In Queensland, on the Sunny Coast.” “Ah yeah, the old Sunny Coast. Sugar cane and pineapples, beautiful country up there, Blob. Now what did you want to talk about this morning, Blob, hangin’ at the beach up there in beautiful Noosa, on the Sugar Coast of Far North Queensland.” “No, Macca, it’s just north of Brisbane, mate.” “Yeah, well, so’s Mackay, Townsville and Cairns, Blob. I think I know me way around Australia, mate, all over the bloody joint. Now what did you want to tell my 10 million listeners, Blob? We haven’t got all day, mate. There’s
at least 20 callers behind you that I’ve gotta not listen to this morning, so spit it out, Blob, old mate.” “I can’t get a wave, Macca.” “What do you mean, you can’t get a wave, Blob? I’m waving at you right now, from the ABC studio, and if we had a decent budget for this show, I’d be out on the road and I’d probably be waving at you where you could see me, up there in the cane fields of Noosa. So how about all of you out there, all over Australia, stop whatever you’re doing, milking the cows, drovin’ the cattle, mending the fences, eatin’ your damper and boilin’ the billy, whatever it is that normal Australians do of a beautiful Sunday morning, here in the best country in the world, just stop it right now for just a sec, and face north and give poor old Blob a big wave. There ya go, Blob, all of Australia is giving you a wave. Does that make you feel better?” “No, Macca. In the surf, I mean. I paddle out there and there’s just too many people. I can’t get a wave.” “I don’t understand, Blob. You want a wave but you can’t get one because there’s too many people. What do you want to do with this wave? Take it home and put it in the backyard or something? That’s a bit weird, Blob. What’s that, Blob? Can’t hear ya, Blob. You’re breaking up. Bye bye, Blob. Jeez, takes all kinds, doesn’t it? Anyway, thanks everybody for helping me cheer up Blob, hanging out up there in his pineapple plantation in beautiful Noosa, all lonely because nobody will wave to him. You’re on
Australia All Over, this is Macca on a Sunday morning. G’day mate, how’re ya goin’ and where are you calling from?” TRASHING PARADISE Regular readers will know that I spend quite a bit of time in Bali, and it’s never enough. Despite what we’ve done to it over many, many years, I left a piece of my heart on that little island a long time ago, and I’ll continue to return to it for as long as I’m able. But that little Bali bit of my heart is constantly being broken by what man hath wrought, whether it’s high rise development too close to the beach, air pollution from revving engines in gridlocked traffic, or that old perennial, the plastic bag, choking waterways and being flushed into the ocean every wet season. I’m old enough to remember Bali before plastic bags,
Australian photographer Jason Childs posted this shocking image of Kuta Beach on social media just a few days ago. Plastic trash as far as the eye can see, flushed out of the rivers and creeks by monsoonal rains. Let’s hope that our beach never looks like this in the wet. and hopefully I’ve got enough time left to see it without them again. Getting rid of high rise and traffic is probably beyond us in a land where green belt means you just have to pay more to build there, but banning plastic bags is an achievable goal. It requires a massive shift of perception, starting with the little schoolkids who are taken by their teachers to beach cleanups, and are then, as a reward, given ice blocks in plastic wrappers. Guess what they do with them?

New partnership delivers for seniors Council of the Ageing Queensland (COTAQ) has been selected to play an important role in representing the interests of older people across the state.
Communities Minister Tracy Davis said COTAQ would receive $375,000 over three years through an innovative Government partnership, the Seniors Advocacy and Research Initiative. “This funding will allow COTAQ to work with non-government organisations who are delivering quality frontline services to older people, fulfilling an important election commitment,” Ms Davis said “COTAQ will also provide input into the development and implementation of State Government policies, programs and priorities for seniors. “Through this innovative partner-

Online comparison service HelpMeChoose.com.au has fielded a national rise of 56 per cent in visits to its health insurance services since the December 23. “There’s a bump in health insurance activity right now and it has
nothing to do with the excesses of Christmas and New Year - in fact, it’s quite the opposite,” Help Me Choose spokesman James O’Loan said. “What we are seeing here is Aussies becoming more aware and savvy about their health insurance cover-

Especially as she was “going to Mama’s school”. Mama, Grandma Maree, can be seen helping out in all areas of the school and, from a very young age, Maddie would visit Mama at school and chat to everyone. The Thomson family’s association with Sunshine Beach State School goes way back to 1984 when Maree’s eldest son Jamie attended the school and she began volunteering as a parent-helper in the classroom. This led to various roles from tuckshop co-ordinator to her current role of Business Services Manager. Maddie’s father Michael, who started pre-school there in 1985, recalls how his love of cricket began on the school oval. Michael recalls many happy hours at the school, saying it had retained its warm, friendly feeling. “It’s like the old days and my Year 7 and 3 teachers are still there,” he said. Maddie may follow in Dad’s footsteps as a keen athlete, after declaring that her favourite subjects were sport and music.

The benefits of a facial Is your skin looking a bit dull, in need of some rejuvenation? Why not consider a facial. Sharon Cassidy from Riverside Beauty discusses different types of facials and how they work. LUXURIOUS, PAMPERING RELAXING FACIALS The pampering facial will do just that - pamper you! The instant you snuggle under the big fluffy doona, candles flickering, you will start to feel the benefits of your facial. Then with the expert administration of beautiful smelling oils and creams tailored to your specific skin type it just keeps getting better. We can’t begin to tell you how good a facial massage is. Every muscle in your face is over used and rarely treated. A facial massage can relieve headaches, tense jaws, sore necks, tight shoulders and, for the frowners, it’s like smoothing away the tension lines. Of course your skin will also see the benefits - a glowing, hydrated healthy looking complexion is the usual result. TREATMENT ORIENTATED FACIALS If you’re looking to slow the clock on aging skin, have problematic or sen-
sitive skin or are prepping for cosmetic facial surgery then a medical grade peel is the key. These facial are designed to work on the superficial to deeper layers of the epidermis and create mild to intense exfoliation. The ingredients are far more active and the intention is to deposit high levels of anti oxidant vitamins which will stimulate correct cellular function, repair damaged collagen, strengthen capillaries and stop the acne bacteria from spreading. Usually a course of peels is needed and with the correct home care, the results are outstanding. FACIALS AND THE TOOLS OF TRADE There is a lot of high technology and advancements in facial treatment machines available in the industry today. From non surgical face lifts, microdermabrasion for acne scarring or collagen stimulation, IPL for skin rejuvenation, pigment and capillary removal and sun damaged skin. So if you’re not interested in surgical procedures but want some serious results then the answer lies in machine-based facial or medical grade peels or a combination of both. Facials at Riverside Beauty start from $75 for a petite facial. Call 5449 9744.

The cells contain keratin, to keep our skin moisturised and supple. So it’s no surprise that decreasing that repair time will lead to dull, tired, old looking skin. Get sun smart and prevent skin cancer Health Minister Lawrence Springborg has urged all Queenslanders to commit to sun safety and skin protection in 2014 to reduce the incidence of skin cancer.
“Tragically, skin cancer claims more than 365 lives each year in Queensland – one life every single day. Yet it is preventable,” Mr Springborg said. “Sun exposure is responsible for 99 per cent of non-melanoma skin cancer and 96 per cent of melanoma, yet the message still isn’t getting through. “The UV index is three or more every day of the year in our state and it is vitally important Queenslanders protect themselves in the sun. “The Newman Government has taken steps to help reduce the incidence of skin cancer by banning UV tanning beds, but only you can protect yourself from the sun. “This year I would urge everyone to make an effort to be sun safe and have a skin check - it may just save your life.” For 23-year-old Sally Roebuck, regular skin checks have been a part of family life for as long as she can remember, so discovering she had a stage one melanoma was a shock.
‘‘As someone who has lighter skin, I’ve always been wary about my skin and skin cancer,’’ Ms Roebuck said. ‘‘My grandfather died as a result of complications related to stage-four melanoma so sun safety and skin checks are something my family is vigilant about.’’ Despite having melanoma in her family, Ms Roebuck said her skin check regime became less frequent during her cash-strapped university years. ‘‘I can remember when I would visit home on my university breaks my mum would always ask if I had a particular mole on my leg checked,’’ she said. ‘‘Eventually I did go and get it checked by my general practitioner who referred me immediately to a dermatologist who removed the mole an hour later. ‘‘The mole turned out to be a stage one melanoma so I had to have my skin checked every three months for the first two years and now every four months.
‘‘I now have a 15cm scar on my right thigh. I’ve never been sun baking and I avoid the sun when I can. ‘‘I know how lucky I am that my melanoma was caught early and I would encourage others to be smart when it comes to sun safety.’’ Cancer Council Queensland’s Katie Clift said Queenslanders needed to be SunSmart as part of their daily routine. “Sun protection in Queensland is vital for all seasons, especially summer, when Ultra Violet Radiation is its most intense,” Ms Clift said. “Queenslanders should look out for the SunSmart UV Alert which appears on the weather page of most daily newspapers and on the Bureau of Meteorology website. “If you have a lesion that doesn’t heal, or a mole that has suddenly appeared, changed in size, thickness, shape, colour or has started to bleed, ask your doctor for a skin examination. Treatment is more likely to be successful if skin cancer is discovered early.”
“I know how lucky I am that my melanoma was caught early.”

Local greengrocers in the running Pardon’s Fruit Market, Cooroy and Jeffers Market, Yandina have made the finals of the Brisbane Produce Market’s 13th annual Retailer of the Year Awards.
The Awards are part of the long-running Retailer Program, which offers marketing and promotional support for the inde-
pendent greengrocers who conduct business with the Brisbane Produce Market. The Program acknowledges fresh produce best practice and plays an important role in increasing the level of retail excellence year after year. To compete for Retailer of the Year, greengrocers are ‘mystery shopped’ by an independent organisation and evaluated on store
presentation, produce quality, range, customer service, visual merchandising, branding and marketing skills. “For those greengrocers who elected to participate in the Retailer Program, it was quite difficult to make it into the finals as all the greengrocers strive to achieve retail excellence and there were only a few points separating the businesses,” said Andrew Young, CEO
It’s a deal! IN SEASON figs Did you know that our friends at Pasta Pronto and Noosa 5 Cinemas in Noosa Junction offer a fantastic entertainment deal?

$30 buys you a Movie Meal Deal. That’s a fresh pasta meal, with a glass or red or white wine, or a beer or soft drink, plus a movie ticket. The deal runs Monday to Saturday from 5.30pm, and includes a range of delicious dishes, such as beef or vegetarian lasagne, fettuccine pesto or creamy mushroom, roast pumpkin and sweet potato ravioli, and old favourites, like spaghetti bolognese. Give them a call on 5448 0522 or drop in to the restaurant at Shop 2, 25 Sunshine Beach Road.
Figs are among the juiciest, sweetest and most fragrant fruits of late summer. They also have a rich history - mentioned in the Bible, they were said to grow in the Garden of Eden and their leaves were allegedly used to cover Adam and Eve’s nakedness. The fig is believed to have originated in western Asia before being cultivated throughout
the Mediterranean and eventually the world. Choose clean, dry figs with thin, unblemished skin. Figs should be soft and yielding when gently squeezed, but still hold their shape. Ripe figs are very delicate, so take care not to squash them when packing them for the trip home! Figs are delicious eaten fresh and raw but, for a special treat, try this simple recipe for Chocolate Figs.

Foodtoday
Recipeof THE WEEK by Patrick Williams at Belmondos
Belmondos Whole Foods Market have recently introduced their new organic breakfast menu and chef Patrick Williams shares today a healthy breakfast dish for anyone to make at home. This organic and gluten free Muesli with Fresh Queensland Mango, Guava & Cranberry Chia Gels is the perfect way to start your day. INGREDIENTS MUESLI: 1 cup gluten free oats 1 cup sesame seeds 1 cup raw almonds ½ cup dried cranberries ½ cup shredded coconut ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon GUAVA & CRANBERRY CHIA GELS: ¼ cup Chia Seeds - for each gel + 1 cup guava juice + 1 cup cranberry juice 2 mangoes - peeled and diced into small chunks METHOD
Mix all the muesli ingredients together in a large bowl.
1 6 K I N G S T, C O O R A N
To make the gels, place chia seeds into jugs or bowls, pour over fruit juices, whisk mixture well, and put aside until all juice is taken up by chia seeds. Chill in fridge before use. To serve, place diced mango into glasses or clear serving bowls, then add guava gel, next add a layer of muesli mix, top with cranberry chia gel, add a little more muesli as a garnish, serve.
CHEF’S NOTES
Store muesli in an airtight container in your cupboard. This is a healthy, refreshing start to the day, high in antioxidants, protein and soluble fibre, and a great source of omega 3. For best results gels are left overnight in fridge before use. Try with coconut yoghurt to give a delicious creamy finish.

New WRX is the total performance package One of the most anticipated performance cars of 2014, the new generation WRX STI, has been unveiled at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.
Engineered for those who take driving seriously, the Subaru WRX STI is the total performance package. With its stunning design, powerful turbocharged Boxer engine and legendary Symmetrical AllWheel Drive system, this performance icon is as breathtaking as it is groundbreaking. During development, Subaru honed the drivability of the new WRX STI to perfection, testing it under demanding conditions in
several countries. As with past generations of WRX STI, testing included ultra-high speed road drives on Germany’s Nürburgring circuit, known for its harsh conditions. Subaru has raised the performance bar for body, chassis and overall engineering - fusing these areas to produce an outstanding All-Wheel Drive package. Standard equipment includes sports body kit, STI sports mesh grille, self levelling low beam Xenon headlights with pop-up washers, 18-inch alloy wheels and Brembo brakes with four-pot front and two-pot rear calipers combined with four-wheel ventilated discs. Pricing and specification of Australian WRX STI variants will be announced in the coming months.
Old and tyred The tyres on your classic shouldn’t be as old as the car!
MAX PARNELL One of the joys of owning a classic car is the weekend run in the company of other enthusiasts. In preparation for an Australia Day run I noticed that the front tyres on my 1967 s type Jaguar were getting a little worn. While not approaching illegal tread depth I decided to replace them.
In the 21st century these are now difficult to Unfortufind due to the 80 profile nately, after a but, with a bit of effort, run of a couthe local Tyrepower dealer was able to find correct Disaster awaits those who ple of hundred kilometres, the sized Hankook tyres. Mod- use old tyres left rear disinern tyres are generally a much lower profile, a 70 per cent as- tegrated breaking three spokes in the pect ratio being common and 50 or 45 wheel at the same time. A detailed series being more often now found on check - which should have been done before the run - showed the tyres to be new cars. I did a quick check on the rear 12 years old, a not uncommon probtyres and, showing very little tread lem on a classic car. It is hard to keep track as the years wear and being a high quality wellknown brand, I decided they were fly by and tyres more than six years old should be replaced. On a classic still good for many kilometres.
car used infrequently this will always mean there is hardly any tread wear but the rubber has passed its use by date. Unfortunately the tale gets worse as the spare I put on was 16 years old! Needless to say the rest of the 400km round trip was taken at a reduced speed and another trip to Tyrepower Noosaville was completed this week. It seems strange - we wouldn’t use a tyre more than two seasons old on the race car yet we forget the age factor on a road car – so how old are the tyres on your classic?
Thinking of buying a new car? Think again!

Business the winner as international surfers flock to Noosa Drift HD Ghost
9-15 MARCH 2014
Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing, presented by Jeep, is heading for its biggest ever international field, with more than 40 per cent of entries received so far coming from overseas. Surfers from nine other countries are now represented, with contingents still expected from Indonesia, Ireland, Italy and South Africa.
American surfers make up the biggest portion of the internationals, with 35 from continental USA and six from Hawaii already entered. Japan and New Zealand are the next biggest groups, with smaller teams from France, the United Kingdom and New Caledonia, and single representatives from Portugal and Mexico. If the trend continues, the festival could see as many as 200 overseas competitors. Festival director Phil Jarratt said Noosa was set for a trading bonanza, with the strong US dollar making Noosa more affordable for the Americans. “We’ve put the hard yards in with international and on-line marketing, plus we’re on the back of a couple of very good years for surf, so we’re
reaping the benefits of that, Phil said. In addition to the 40 per cent of internationals signed up across 30 different events, another 25 per cent is from interstate. This year’s four-hours-a-day live webcast, streamed through Australia’s biggest surf forecasting website, Swellnet.com, and sponsor websites, is expected to further raise the international profile of the festival. LAST CHANCE TO WIN A DRIFT ACTION CAMERA Got a budding videographer in the house? If so he or she could win a fantastic Drift HD Ghost, the most advanced POV camera on the market, just by sending us a short video clip that shows life “outside the box. No rules, just a four or five minute surf or beach related clip. Just upload it to YouTube and post a link to the NFOS Facebook page, tagging it “Drift Live Outside The Box by (INSERT YOUR NAME).
Local world champ Dimity Stoyle The best clips uploaded by March 1 will win their creators a Drift HD Ghost, plus an accessories kit (total value more than $500) and a screening during the festival at the Drift Live Outside The Box Video Awards. Go for it! AIM FOR THE STARS FOUNDATION AND SMART PUPS TO BENEFIT FROM MOY REMEMBRANCE NIGHT Women’s world surfing champions
Layne Beachley and Wendy Botha will head up a star-studded cast of the best female surfers in history next month to pay tribute to Noosa’s own beach girl legend, Moy Sweetman, a year after her passing, and Layne’s Aim For The Stars Foundation and Sunshine Coast Smart Pups will be the beneficiaries. Sails Restaurant Noosa will present an “all girl shootout expression session at First Point at sunset on Thursday, March 13, and then host a night with the champions
“In Memory of Moy as part of the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing, presented by Jeep. Seven times world champion Layne Beachley, a regular celebrity guest at the Noosa Festival, said: “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Moy’s life than getting the champions together and putting on a show. We’ll all be out there to catch a wave for Moy. The Sunshine Coast’s own 2013 world amateur champion Dimity Stoyle will join Layne, four-times world champ Wendy Botha, world junior longboard champion Honolua Blomfield from Hawaii, and many other champions in the Sailssponsored exhibition “shootout from 5pm at First Point. Then from 7.30pm Sails will host an all-star charity dinner with the champions, featuring film, live music from Andrea Kirwin, celebrity memorabilia auction and a fabulous three-course meal with beverages. All proceeds from the night will be donated to Layne Beachley’s Aim For The Stars Foundation, which provides cash support for promising young female athletes in difficult circumstances, and Smart Pups, providing guide dogs for special needs children. Fun, friendship and fitness Government funding will see more locals getting fit and having fun with Noosa Masters Swim Club.
The club is holding a come-andtry day on Sunday, February 16, from 7.30am at Noosa Aquatic Centre, Girraween Court, Sunshine Beach, thanks to financial support from the Queensland Department of National Parks, Recreation & Racing, through their Get in the Game - Get Going program. “If the success of our 2012 comeand-try is any indication, we are in for a great morning, said organiser Ian Tucker.
Although anyone aged 20 or over can join the club it’s well known for its more mature members, boosting their health and fitness, and love of life. These include Owen Curtis who, despite being out of the pool for several months due to a pre-existing injury from “jumping out the sky 30 years ago, has discarded his moon boot and is now back enjoying his laps again. Mary Lester, a water baby as a youngster, swimming in the Carrs Park pool in Sydney, joined after relocating from Brisbane. An inspirational member, she is now instrumental in
the club’s successful Endurance 1000 program, as well as a regular swimmer. Grant Scotcher said it was “a positive, life-changing event when, in October 2012, I attended the comeand-try. “My fitness, breathing and general health has improved out of sight, he said. Jessica Tye is one of the younger members of the club. As a mother of two young daughters, she was determined to regain her hourglass figure but could barely swim one length of the pool. Through perseverance Jess is now preparing for the National Masters Swim championships to be
From left, Owen Curtis, Mary Lester, Grant Scotcher, Jessica Tye and John Hordyk held in Rockhampton in April. John Hordyk joined because “he needed a challenge in retirement and the Masters’ theme of fun, friendship and fitness appealed to him. His wife enjoys the social calendar. The only pre-requisite for taking part in the come-and-try is that you
are aged 20 years or over and can swim a minimum of 50m freestyle. The morning swim session will be headed by the club’s head coach, Jan Croft, ably assisted by other competent and qualified swim coaches. Contact Ian Tucker on 0411 880 006 for further information.

Big chance of a win MICHAEL SOBEY The majority of games are evenly poised after the weekend’s action.
1st grade were away to the Hawks at Palmwoods and batted first on a tricky deck. Andy Kratzmann (35) and Zach Allen (39) made a very solid start and were well supported in the middle order by Jarrod Officer and Michael Bidois to reach 3/172 before disaster struck. The tail was wrapped up quickly to post 198. The Hawks openers were very methodical in the chase and have grafter 98 for no loss off 38 overs before stumps. The pitch still has a bit in it and a few early wickets on week two could open this game right up. 2nds were home to the Hawks with a depleted bowling attack with a few key players out injured or to top up to 1sts. The bowling load was shared between a number of players who took responsibility and stepped up a notch. Travis Fulton had his best return to date with 4/44 and Chris Wright and Don Bensted also picked up 2 each to restrict the visitors to 176. A patient start has seen us reach 1/21 off 13 overs and a very real chance of picking up the first win of the season next week. It was down to Clowntown for the 3rds looking to build on their win last week. The pitch looked a little better than the usual one and a decision to bat was made. Reece Langan (90) and Joe Lange (24) again made a good start before legspin was introduced at both ends which produced a mini collapse to go from 0/80 to 3/90. Mick Sobey (47) steadied the middle order and a few bonus runs from the tail saw a respectable 219 posted. In response Caloundra were reduced to 3/65 with Phil Drescher (on one leg) picking up 2 wickets. The game is well set for another win next week but catches will need to be held. 5th grade were at home to Caboolture in a game that will help shape the final 4. The visitors batted first and posted a moderate 202. In a day where just about everyone got a bowl the wickets were shared with highlights Alex Bennett (2/4) and Mo Shamin picking up his first wicket for the club. In response we have reached 3/68 and with some experienced batting slashing in next week there’s a big chance of another win.
Cougars are kings! NATHAN MCLEAN Last Sunday Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club – the Cougars had two senior teams play off for the one day grand final in both B and C Grades.
B Grade played Yandina at Yandina and were sent into bat. Losing early wickets the Cougars were in trouble at 5/50. Enter the captain of the team, Phil Ilott, hitting a true captains knock of 52 and getting the Cougars back in the game to be all out for 156. Wickets fell early for Yandina, who were in trouble from the get go. A tremendous bowling effort from all saw Yandina bowled out for 134 giving the Cooroy Eumundi B Grade side a one day grand final win. Cooroy C Grade took on firm favourites Stanley Rivers at Woodford on Australia Day in the one day grand final. Finally winning the toss using an old English two pence piece, Pommie skipper Rob Plant had no hesitation in batting first. Opener Ken Park batted superbly for his 51, giving Cooroy an excellent start. With Cam Woods hitting a classy 30, and Dale Scanlan
Cougars celebrate after taking the win smashing a quick fire 55, including four 6s and four 4s, they guided Cooroy to a healthy 202 off their 40 overs. In reply, Stanley Rivers were never in the game. Young Lachlan Henbury bowled superbly, restricting the run chase to one of survival. However, bowling honours were taken by the spinners as Stanley Rivers attempted to force the pace. Mitch Kneale taking 3 for 40 off his 8 overs, and youngster Kaleb Hamilton 4 for 17 off 5 overs, both

bowled superbly to cut through the innings. Stanley Rivers eventually bowled out for 125. Cooroy went into this game as underdogs, but the attitude and commitment shown by all C Grade players ensured a solid victory over the unbeaten Stanley Rivers by 77 runs. The skipper is now one of the only Englishmen in Australia to be collecting a winner’s trophy this summer! Cooroy-Eumundi A Grade travelled to Coolum for the first day of
the round 12 clash that could possibly decide second spot on the ladder in the two-day competition. Cougar skipper Mick Carman won the toss and batted first and despite a fighting 36 from opener Mark Shepperson, Cooroy suffered another familiar middle order collapse to be floundering at 5-55 before in-form all rounder Phil Anderson came to the rescue with a swashbuckling 53 which enabled the Cougars to post a final total of 142. In reply a magnificent sustained spell of fast bowling from Matt Campbell (6-56 off 16 straight overs) reduced the hosts to 8-134 at stumps. The match resumes next week with Coolum needing 9 runs and Cooroy 2 wickets for victory. Cooroy U14s had a competitive match against Yandina at Cooroy. Bowling first Cooroy dismissed Yandina for 108 including 44 sundries with 7 individual wicket takers and 3 excellent run outs. Kurt was a star in the field with an excellent catch and 2 run outs. In reply a top order collapse saw us lose 5/6 before Steen and George Giblett steadied the ship with a valuable partnership. George G 16, Steen 12 and Kurt 12 (3 fours) got the score to 77 resulting in a 31 run loss.

On Australia Day weekend the Noosa club kept up its yearly tradition of sending a big competitive team to Sydney for a series of carnivals. Head coach Darren Mercer said, “It is very important that we attend interstate carnivals, in particular the ones at Manly and Freshie as this gives our competitors a good look
at what they will be up against at the forthcoming Australian titles. It is not just good enough to train hard; they must also know what and who they will be facing at the national titles. It is all part of the very important mind game. “We were more than happy with the results over all. It was only about a metre wave, enough to make it interesting. Five reasons why kids should play sport GETS THEM OUT THE HOUSE So many kids these days are only too happy to sit inside watching the television and playing on computer games with no fresh air or real communication. Taking up a sport is a great and fun way for them to get out of the house, exercise and have some fresh air without feeling as if it is a chore. LOWERS RISK OF OBESITY The number of overweight chil-
dren in Australia has doubled in recent years with a quarter considered overweight or obese. Taking part in sports helps children burn off calories, while studies show that active children have better eating habits, which in turn makes for healthier children. BOOSTS SELF-CONFIDENCE Sport can be a great way to boost self-esteem and improve a child’s self-confidence. Studies have shown that children who take part in sport have more self-belief and feel better about themselves compared with those who don’t do sports. It also teaches them about goal setting and teamwork – all of which can boost a child’s self-confidence.

MAKE FRIENDS Joining the local football or netball team or participating in school sports is a great way for your child to make
new friends. Joining in with just one new sport will open up a whole new social circle to your kids. Just having to communicate with children as part of a sports game will improve their social and cooperation skills.

HEALTH BENEFITS Studies have shown that children who play sports are less stressed than kids who don’t do any physical activity. The reason is that the brain releases feel-good chemicals during exercise, which regulate stress levels and can improve a person’s mood. Other benefits include increased cardiovascular fitness, healthy growth of bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons, improved sleep and better coordination and balance.

SUMMER SWIM A WINNER FOR NOOSA The swim – the first in the Weekend Warriors Series – attracted around 700 entries for the various events, including a host of celebrities, such as Michael Klim. Beach safety was looked after by Noosa Heads Surf Club with manager Anton Mogg saying, “When the organisers spoke to us and the senior club regarding hosting the event we

were only too happy to do so. It’s a great promotion for Noosa and when opportunities like this arise we will always help.” With so many competitors, plus families and onlookers, the big crowd on Main Beach ensured lifesavers on the afternoon patrol were kept busy. A total of 13 rescues were carried out – six were visitors who got into difficulties and the remaining seven were inexperienced pool swimmers who, despite having no surf swimming experience, still decided to have a go.
John Guise, a director and organiser for the event, said, “I want to give a big thank you to both the lifesaving club as well as the supporter club for their support. Their duty boat and rescue ski had all our events and swimmers well covered. It often happens that some swimmers get over confident and just don’t realize the big difference between pool and surf swimming.” With the cooperation and support from the club Guise said the event will definitely be back on Main
Beach next year. Patrol One, who on Saturday afternoon performed the 13 rescues, has now been dubbed the “Wonderful Ones’’ by clubmates. Patrol Captain Carolyn Lansdown said, “At the change of tide a big sweep developed and with the big crowds, plus the swim events all members were on full alert. All went well.” Tourism Noosa chief Damien Massingham said hosting the event was a coup for Noosa. “Sponsored by Tourism Noosa,
Simon Hinsley, with Michael Klim (above), and Mat Rogers, came from Melbourne to compete in the event

the Noosa Summer Swim is a new event for the destination. The ocean swim series event aligns well with Tourism Noosa’s strategy of promoting Noosa as a positive sporting destination and event organisers were pleased with competitor numbers in their first year, with over 700 competitors lining up for this ocean series event. “The event also gained national coverage with Channel Seven’s Weekend Sunrise filming the weather crosses on Noosa Main Beach.”
