Lara Mad Max plan By NOEL MURPHY LARA wants to hitch its fortunes to a postapocalyptic Mad Max future. The 1970s Mel Gibson road warrior, who spearheaded Australia’s assault on Hollywood, is subject of a determined new campaign by Lara’s chamber of commerce to build a Mad Max museum in the town. A recent Mad Max reunion that brought fans in droves to the movie’s local filming hotspots inspired chamber president Lorel Robinson to develop the museum concept. Ward councillor Tony Ansett, who is championing the plan, told the Independent he wanted $100,000 from City Hall to kickstart the museum. “Mad Max was filmed all around Lara and Little River and Avalon and it’s an Aussie classic, a part of so many people’s upbringing,” Cr Ansett said. “It was ahead of its time and it has a cult following right around the world.” Ms Robinson said the chamber was keen to utilise council-owned land to the north of Lara. The City Hall finances were needed to assess the legal requirements of setting up a Mad Max museum. “This has come off the back of a reunion by the Little River Historical Society,” she said.

Thinking it was just a pulled muscle, North Geelong’s Jane Lucas was shocked when, at the age of 31, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. “The pain gradually became sharper, so I thought it best to go and see a doctor just in case,” she said. “The doctor felt a mass in my abdominal area that was similar in size to a five-month pregnant belly. I told her I

thought I’d been eating too much cheese. “It all happened so fast and I was diagnosed in late October 2011. After locating the tumour I was sent straight into surgery in November where they removed the whole thing intact. “All diseased cells were encapsulated within the tumour, which was a good sign. “In January 2012 I got the final diagnosis it was a rare sub-type of an ovarian primary cancer. “It was stage one, so thanks to early

detection and my extremely positive prognosis I didn’t need any treatment such as chemotherapy. “Considering that two in three women don’t survive ovarian cancer, its mortality rate and that early detection is the only measure we have against the disease, if I hadn’t addressed the symptoms when I did I probably wouldn’t be here today. “Ovarian cancer is extremely hard to detect because the signs and symptoms are so common or insignificant, such as a bit of weight gain or abdominal pain -

PROPONENTS of a controversially proposed chemical facility at North Geelong have decided against a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal appeal. Teleta Nominees’ Ryan McGarigle confirmed the decision to allow the planning permit application for Roseneath St to lapse. Mr McGarigle said negotiations were underway with a new prospective tenant for the site, which previously accommodated a Ferro Corporation chemical storage. Mr McGarigle declined to identify the prospective tenant or its industry but said a permit would be unnecessary. A Geelong council planning panel hearing in November refused Teleta’s application for building works on the Roseneath St site. The proposal attracted 175

objections to the land’s use for chemical storage and blending. Ward councillor Eddy Kontelj said any proposal for chemical facilities on the site would require a new planning application. “Council needs to see whether it can be part of a process to encourage a different type of development there, more in tune with existing industry and having regard to the residential areas nearby,” he said. Objectors group spokesperson Anna Michalik welcomed their “significant win”. “It was really impressive how the community came together. It shows that when the community does come together like this, we are listened to. Eddy Kontelj and (Geelong MP) Ian Trezise both listened to us. “We’re absolutely elated and you can feel new energy for residents and businesses in the area. It’s like a new lease on life.”

Ms Michalik said the experience had been emotional for residents. “We were going through a lot of things because it was not only a health issue but our lives at risk. “We didn’t hold out much hope at first because of the way the system operates. It needs to be a better system when there are residential areas concerned, such as bigger buffer zones.” Ms Michalik hoped other commercial premises in the street would now be leased out after sitting idle while the saga dragged on. “We’d love to see them clean up the mess that’s there and put in an appropriate development. There are endless possibilities to service the area with its nursing homes, Arena and railway station. “There are lots of other business opportunities without dealing with chemicals.”

PM invites city’s pitch for $10b combat work By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG’S bid for a $10 billion combat vehicle contract will go to Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s office and senior cabinet ministers after securing the formal backing of Premier Denis Napthine this week. Mayor Darryn Lyons said he would spearhead the Canberra campaign next Thursday, at Mr Abbott’s behest, to secure the world’s largest armoured combat vehicle manufacturing project. The Land 400 Sentinel Military Vehicle job is a $10 billion designand-manufacturing program with

funding from the Australian Government’s Defence Capability Plan. Geelong is arguing its credentials on the grounds of its vehicle manufacturing expertise, its leadership in advanced composite manufacture, through Deakin University’s Carbon Nexus, and the imperative to aid the transition of Ford workers set to lose their local jobs by 2016. The Land 400 program will require high technology manufacturing, advanced composite production, software development and maintenance, vehicle system integration and logistics skills.

“This is a long, long-term project for the future of the city but it’s the biggest procurement in the world and the mayor wants it in Geelong,” Cr Lyons told the Independent. “That’s why I’m going to extraordinary lengths to lobby for this and nail this for the city. “For the first time in a long time, everyone in Geelong, from the mayor, the Committee for Geelong and G21 to the chamber of commerce, is speaking with the one voice. That has to set the tone for the future of Geelong.” Cr Lyons said Dr Napthine had offered the formal support of the Victo-

rian Government to the Geelong bid. City Hall’s Enterprise Geelong unit is drafting a document outlining Geelong’s case and including Dr Napthine’s statement of support. Mr Abbott invited Geelong to put its case to his office. Cr Lyons said the delegation expected to also meet Defence Minister David Johnston, assistant minister for Defence Stuart Robert, senior prime ministerial advisors, Geelong MPs Sarah Henderson and Richard Marles and some of his federal opposition colleagues.

Sea Dragon comes to life in city amid funding call ARCHITECTS have put on display a scale model of a proposed “icon” tourist attraction for Geelong’s waterfront. JOH Architects’ Sea Dragon wind turbine sculpture won $10,000 from Senia Lawyers in 2012’s Icon for Geelong competition, promoted in the Independent. The architecture firm said its design drew inspiration from Geelong’s historic links to farming and industry while also incorporating an environ-

mentally-sustainable vision for the city. The design features seven masts holding aloft wind turbines that drive a corkscrew-like structure that creates a wave-effect at water level. The 75m structure would sit on a floating pontoon connected to an existing breakwater, leaving waterfront land unaffected. Senia Lawyers is displaying the Sea Dragon model by appointment in

the firm’s office, at 94 Gheringhap St, Geelong. The firm’s Andrew Senia, who initiated the Icon for Geelong competition, said Sea Dragon could be a “unique” tourist attraction to help boost the city’s economy. The design and icon competition came at no cost to the three levels of government, which should now back construction of Sea Dragon, Mr Senia said.

He believed the return on investment would be “thousands” of visitors to the region annually and inspiration for residents in “a difficult period of Geelong’s history”. Mr Senia thanked Deakin University’s Professor Hisham Elkadi and the Independent for helping the icon project. “Sea Dragon is a fine example of what can be achieved by private individuals for the benefit of their community,” he said.

He joked about erecting as Larawood sign in the You Yangs, overlooking the town. The first of three Mad Max

road warrior movies was released in 1979. The produciton featured a youthful Mel Gibson as policeman Max Rockatansky, intent on avenging the deaths of his partner, wife and son at the hands of a murderous motorcycle gang. Scenes were filmed on isolated roads in and around the You Yangs. Filming was also completed on the Surf Coast, including scenes at the main character’s family home overlooking the ocean at Fairhaven.

REPORTS of car thefts in Geelong have jumped 26 per cent, according to new figures. National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council recorded an increase from 112 in the third quarter of 2012 to 141 for the same time last year. The council counted 620 vehicle thefts in Geelong and the Surf Coast in the 12

months to 30 September. The top three suburbs for car thefts during the period were Geelong with 64, Norlane, 47, and Belmont, 46. The top three local targets were VT Holden Commodores, KH Ford Lasers and X3 Hyundai Excels. High-performance cars were twice as likely to be stolen than standard counterparts in the region, the coun-

cil’s latest report indicated. The council warned that thieves were now breaking into houses to steal car keys. The thieves were stealing keys to make off with newer models so they could get around their advanced anti-theft devices, the council said. Servo bid reveals lights ‘plan’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AN APPLICATION for a third Drysdale service station indicates VicRoads proposes to replace the town’s congested Jetty-GrubbPortarlington roads roundabout with traffic lights. But VicRoads said it was only investigating and had no plans to upgrade the intersection. A Caltex service station with six double car fuel pumps and two for trucks is proposed for High St, about 150 metres from the roundabout. A traffic study supporting the

proposal said the major intersection, the subject of motorist complaints for several years, would be signalised. The study said no timeframe was in place for installation of traffic lights but indicated that Portarlington Rd would become four lanes entering the intersection. Calls to ease the roundabout’s daily peak-hour snarl date back to 2008, with VicRoads promising to fix the traffic nightmare. An extension of the Geelong Ring Road to Portarlington Rd is also under investigation.

However, the traffic study claimed the roundabout worked at “very good” to “excellent” levels during morning and afternoon peaks. The service station plans have drawn the ire of Drysdale Clifton Springs Community Association because the development is in a rural living zone. An association online response said the development “would introduce an industrialscale development into a rural living zone, contradicting many planning policies”. “Drysdale has two service sta-

tions already - where is the statistical and demographic evidence to show that three service stations would be economically viable? “If the proposal succeeds in the absence of such evidence, the result could be that one of the three service stations fails economically or that all three see reduced profits.” The association said possible approval for another supermarket in Clifton Springs’ Jetty Rd estate could include a service station, placing “even greater economic pressure” on the existing stations. The association’s Doug Car-

son said traffic lights would fail to fix the peak-hour congestion. “The congestion will be the same at the peak hours with lights. At least the roundabout lets people flow through. “I don’t think you can fix it. It’s only a relatively minor period of time and drivers just have to adjust. “What we’re pushing for is a bypass around Drysdale but that could be 10 years away. “If they let them put the servo there they won’t want a bypass of their new station and we’ll

be even further behind the eight ball.” VicRoads regional director William Tieppo said the service station developer had been “advised” of an investigation into impacts of projected population growth area’s arterial road network. “This investigation may identify the need to upgrade the intersection of Geelong-Portarlington Rd/Grubb Rd/Jetty Rd. “At this stage there are no plans to upgrade this intersection.”

Costa helps bed down new fund-raiser for hospital CFA fire warning

HOT weather and strong wind this weekend pose a serious local fire risk, the CFA has warned. With temperatures tipped to hit 40C before a gusty south-westerly change Sunday, the CFA is worried about grass and bushfire outbreaks. Spokesperson Ian Beswicke urged residents to be “really careful”. “Temperatures are going to stay really hot on Saturday night and it’s going to be windy. Any fires will run right through Saturday night and we won’t get the opportunity we might normally expect to bring them under control.” Mr Beswicke said he was anxious about large numbers of people exposed to fire risks as they travelled to beaches. “People need to monitor their radios and mobile phones for warnings,” he said.

He joined forces with Rotary Club of Grovedale to launch its Great Hospital Bed Bonanza, seeking philanthropists to sponsor beds at the redeveloped Myers St hospital. St John of God will open Geelong’s first private emergency service in June as part of the major refit. The Rotary campaign hopes to tap Geelong’s generosity to help the hospital complement the publicly funded services of Barwon Health. Hospital spokesperson Taanya Widdicombe urged donors to support the campaign. “The Great Hospital Bed Bonanza is a fantastic opportunity for families and individuals to support our hospital as we transform to meet the future health care needs of our community and honour the memory of a loved one if they choose to,” she said. COCKRAM Constructions has won a $25.9 million contract to build a railway station at Waurn Ponds. Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder said work on the “Grovedale” station would begin “in the coming weeks”. “The new station will open by the end of year, with around two trains an hour to operate in the peaks and additional capacity created once Regional Rail Link opens in 2016,” Mr Mulder said. Food ‘hub’ plans set to grow $2.7b agri sector By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG could host a new food hub if Deakin University and urban sustainability firm Innate Ecology can draw State Government backing for their plan. They want Spring St cash for a study into Geelong’s food producers and their operations in a bid to bolster existing and new agri-businesses. With the agriculture sector already making up 37 per cent of Geelong’s manufacturing base, Deakin and In-

nate Ecology want to explore emerging food business, intensive farming opportunities and prospects for new collaborations in producer-to-consumer supply links. Innate Ecology’s Suzette Jackson said local government and “a number of regional agriculture industry groups and businesses” supported the plan. “Work is expected to commence later this month,” she said. G21 agribusiness forum chair Russell Coad, also a board member of

City Hall’s Enterprise Geelong, said the plans dovetailed neatly with efforts to accelerate the region’s $2.7-billiona-year farming sector. The sector, which employed 10,000 people locally, was essential to the region with traditional manufacturing in decline, he said. Geelong already had projects such as Wagyu Beef farming on the horizon, while new research and education facilities, intensive agriculture precincts, targeted trade missions and

Now an international business entrepreneur and motivational speaker, Graham Webb addressed a number of sold-out events around Geelong this week. “Geelong has so much going for it - there are so many different things going on,” Mr Webb enthused. “Sometimes it takes someone from somewhere else to come along and say it. Places like Geelong sometimes need to be reminded of it. “Geelong is like a see-saw - it might be dipping at the moment but the other end is rising.” Mr Webb said he was raised in a government-subsidised flat with little money as an undiagnosed spina bifida sufferer.

OBJECTORS to rezoning Newtown and Belmont for dwellings up to four storeys high are fighting to convince authorities the plan is way out of line. They have lodged with council a 350-signature petition arguing that State Government’s proposed C300 planning scheme amendment is at odds with council’s guidelines. The amendment affects selected suburbs and towns around the state. The petition said the proposed zoning within Newtown was inconsistent with the intent of the state-wide rezoning on four grounds: the area was beyond walking

distance of Geelong Railway Station, contrasting the objective of C300 on access to train stations; the area lacked a shopping strip or an activity centre, as required for rezoning; significant neighbourhood character, including a National Trust property and numerous period homes deserving protection; and physical constraints including schools and associated traffic congestion. Jobs flow from water contract By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A $28 MILLION Barwon Water contract with a US firm is set to create 16 direct jobs as well as work for subcontractors and suppliers. Insituform-Pacific, a subsidiary of St Louis-based Aegion Corporation, won the five-year contract to reline Barwon Water’s wastewater pipeline system. The festival also benefits the Geelong Give Where You Live program as the events charity partner. To ensure everyone’s safety, temporary road closures, tow away zones and clear ways will be implemented. The Route 10 Geelong to Rosewall and Route 11 Geelong to Corio via North Shore buses will not service The Esplanade bus stop between 6.30am and 12noon on Saturday 8 and between 8.30am to 3.30pm on Sunday 9 February. The buses will stop at Mercer Street outside St Peter and Pauls Church and Pizza Land.

• Sunday 9 February The IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong and the Geelong 5150 swims are at 7.05am and 8.35am. The participants will be swimming in Corio Bay between the Eastern Beach Promenade and the Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

The Route 79 Geelong to St Leonards via Drysdale bus will not service the Geelong - Portarlington Road bus stops between Garden Street and Grubb Road, between 8.00am and 12noon on Sunday 9 February. The bus will travel along the Bellarine Highway, during the road closure of the Geelong – Portarlington Highway.

Letters Camera costs customer I READ with interest letters headlined ‘Seeing red over a fine way to raise revenue’ in the 24 January Independent. I also share the belief of other readers that the traffic lights and cameras at the intersection of The Boulevard and Melbourne Rd, Norlane, might be set up illegally to trap and raise revenue from innocent motorists. I am 65 years old and have an excellent driving record. The last thing I would ever consider doing is running a red light. Recently in peak-hour traffic I exited Bunnings to turn right into Melbourne Rd and was last in a line of traffic. I had just entered the intersection on a green light when the traffic in front of me halted and I was caught with nowhere to go, resulting in a $361 fine and three demerit points. Despite numerous correspondence with police, I was falsely told I had entered on a red light. Because of this I now avoid Bunnings. Max Robson Clifton Springs

Light cycle too fast LIKE Allan Marshall and others (Letters, 17, 24, January), I too received a hefty fine and three demerit points trying to get through the right-turn lane at the intersection at Bunnings. The driver in front hesitated, which didn’t leave me enough time to complete my turn. My wife made a comment at the time that the cycle was too short to negotiate the turn with even just one slow car in front. Bellarine Bayside manages 32 amenities blocks across its foreshore reserves, 12 of which are used by the non-camping public. The two facilities to which Mr Cowden referred are subject to daily cleaning between 26 December and 2 February and thrice weekly until Easter when

Both projects have the same building company. The ongoing management of such assets is always a challenge for an organisation with limited funds for renewal. Renewal and upgrade of these assets is, however, a high priority for the board, which has commenced strategic planning of amenities. In the past three years the board has increased expenditure on the foreshore reserves. Avalon potentially offers a costeffective entree into bludgeoning Asian fresh food markets. Bigger-picture-wise, sustained Avalon and Deakin University investments in an election year, when the major parties to date are floundering locally, offer the umbrella for regional game-changer opportunities. ting the lion’s share of the education pie. Public schools were originally government’s only responsibility in education. The Catholic Church took on educating its people, recruiting so-called Christian Brothers as teachers and nuns who worked for free. This was done to swell the church’s numbers. As the church’s students became educated they become leaders of our country and returned the favour of the church, making laws that government gave money to these institutions, so much so that private schools now get from Federal Government about a third more money per student than state schools. My education in the ’30s and ’40s was totally free, with no charge for books, writing equipment et cetera. We were given an excellent education. If we removed the $14,000-plus per student from private schools and gave it to state schools we would again be able to give students free education and become a truly well-educated country. ‘Chicken’ exposes fudge PRINCE Charles has labelled climate sceptics the “headless chicken brigade”. In all due respect, the prince fails to recognise that scientists have been caught fudging climate change data more than once. Independent analyst Steven Goddard recently uncovered a monumental calculating error in official US Government climate data, with climate scientists unjustifiably adding a whopping 1C of phantom warming to the official raw temperature record. Many believe the discovery might trigger the biggest of all climate scandals in the US and result in a radical change in American climate policy. The officially adjusted and homogenised US temperature records are relied upon by scientists around the world to prove the planet’s climate has been warming dangerously. So why should the prince, people and politicians in particular have blind faith in what those climate scientists committed to global warming theory are telling us about climate change? Gaol in one-act plague By MICHELLE HERBISON ROSES and carnations filled the masks of medieval plague doctors to protect against germridden air as they performed treatments as quirky as bleeding and covering patients with toads. The methods may have failed at staving off death and despair for patients and doctors alike but they certainly make for some gory tales. So says Nick Ravenswood of The Laudanum Project, a selfdescribed “theatrical monstrosity” that is bringing Ballad of the Plague Doctor to the darkened walls of Geelong Gaol over two evenings in March. The one-act, 90-minute performance features Ravenswood as narrator of a hellish poetry recreating the final days of Dr Marroc Corvus Rapere, Medieval London’s first community plague doctor. “We get into the guts of what it would’ve been like to live back then,” Ravenswood explained. “Usually the doctors that were employed and selected weren’t particularly top-end at what they did. There was a massive risk of infection and death and they got paid three shillings a month.” Keyboardist ‘Lady Sophronia Lick-Penny’ will accompany the entire performance with

melodramatic soundscapes, producing a cinematic quality that has led audiences to comment they could “almost smell” the experience. The narration’s “evocative, florid and descriptive” prose took inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens, while the overall style featured elements from Grand Guignol, the French theatre of terror, Ravenswood said. “While they did performances that were extraordinarily graphic and gory, we rely heavily on storytelling. It’s not particularly graphic. “Sometimes you feel like you’re attending an old radio play. Although the story is narrated by myself, I’m in character as Alphonse Cheese-Probert.” The production of Ballad of the Plague Doctor is The Laudanum Project’s third play after forming in 2009 out of a theatrical boredom Ravenswood developed working backstage in London theatre. “I’ve worked on a lot of very boring musicals,” he laughed. “I try to make this as far away from Sunset Boulevard as I can.” The Geelong Gaol setting would switch audiences onto “high alert” creating a “much more potent” experience, Ravenswood teased.

Shakespeare in Valentine dates THE romance, magic and mayhem of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream will entertain Valentine’s Day audiences at Leura Park Estate on 14 and 15 February. The Essential Theatre production will mark the fourth annual Shakespeare in the Vines event at the Curlewis winery, with Leura Park Estate director Lyndsay Sharp hoping this year’s event will sell out like the previous three. “This year we will again be staging the performance within the barrel shed and winery enclave, which ensures weather protection for patrons while featuring a terrific working winery ambience amidst a backdrop of majestic cypress trees and undulating paddocks,” Sharp said. “There will be a range of onsite food options on the nights to suit all budgets and tastes. Wine, beer and cider will also be available for purchase before and after the performance. “Post-performance, there’ll be live music until late on both nights where guests get to meet and mingle with the cast - it’s definitely shaping up to be a magical couple of nights.” In 2014 Essential Theatre celebrates its 12th year of entertaining Australian crowds with the works of Shakespeare, offering audiences clever and entertaining interpretations of the engaging scripts. The script of A Midsummer Night’s Dream explores the universal theme of love and its complications through three parallel stories: the experiences of two sets of lovers camping in a magical forest; the world of the Fairy King and Queen and their elves; and a group of rough craftsmen attempting to stage a production for the wedding of the Duke of Athens. Mazda 3 is taking lead By EWAN KENNEDY THERE’S no more important model to Mazda than its biggest selling model, the small-medium Mazda3. And there’s no more important country to Mazda than Australia. Of the 3.8 million Mazda3s sold worldwide since its 2004 launch almost 10 per cent have come downunder. Along the way, the ‘3 shot to the top of the Australian sales ladder in 2011 and stayed there in 2012. Mazda’s head office in Japan recognised the importance of the market by holding the global reveal of the allnew Mazda3 in Melbourne in June last year. The shape of the new Mazda3 follows the styling cues of other recent Mazda model cars but takes the theme to new levels with bold sporty lines that attracted a lot of attention from people who noticed it during the first Australian test drives out of Adelaide. The complex grille sits close to being vertical to make for a long bonnet, one that could even be called almost roadster in its dimensions. While the body is exactly the same length as that of the just superseded Mazda3, it sits on a longer wheelbase and therefore has shorter overhangs in a very European manner. This also gives improved interior room. Mazda boasts the car has best-inclass coefficient of drag at 0.28 for the hatch and 0.26 in the sedan. This is partly due to an active radiator grille shutter that opens just enough to provide the correct cooling. Inside, there’s a strong Italian look to the instrument layout with the topline models having a single large gauge for the tachometer.

It’s flanked by a pair of smaller digital displays, one of them showing a digital speedometer. The stylish new interior may be a sign of things to come because Mazda and Alfa Romeo have teamed up to design and build several new models. Body rigidity has been improved by 30 per cent compared to the outgoing model, yet weight has been reduced by up to 70 kilograms, the latter due to the new design and the use of high tensilestrength steels in vital areas. Mazda3 is offered with two engine choices: a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm, and a new 2.5-litre petrol unit producing 138 kW, and 250 Nm at 3250. Mazda figures show the engines use about 30 per cent less fuel than the units they supersede. Transmissions are six-speed manual and six-speed automatic. Both are new designs that improve efficiency and make for sharper driving. Mazda has been pushing hard on safety in Australia for a number of years and even the lower cost versions have better than average levels. Should a crash still occur, the Mazda3 has six airbags; rigid body structure; and whiplash-reducing front headrests. The base of the A-pillars have been repositioned rearwards to significantly improve the driver’s view. Topline models have Mazda’s new Active Driving Display. Mazda Australia is pretty keen on getting its ‘3 back to the top of the sales tree and this new model has all the ingredients required. Mazda has opened the batting with very competitive prices ranging from $20, 490 to $38,190 plus dealer charges.

After only making 141 the previous week and with Carlton resuming at 6/117, the Cats’ bowlers knew early wickets were their only hope. And that’s exactly what Jake Reed and Marc Carson delivered, claiming three quickies to reduce the visitors to 9/126. But Carlton wasn’t to be denied and staged a fight-back, eventually drawing level before Reed had Tim Welsford caught behind for a memorable finish as the inform speedster returned the excellent figures of 7/39. This weekend the Cats travel to the Albert ground to take on Melbourne, which sits one rung above in third. With Geelong’s solid form, there’s no reason to suggest the Cats can’t win this one. Initially I said I’d never do another one but I’m all entered and eager to race,” Moffatt said. “Last year I mixed drafting races with non-drafting and really enjoyed the change, so after Olympic distance, long course is something I’d like to take more seriously.” Moffatt’s 2014 season will be a mix of Olympic distance and 70.3 races. “It’s been months since I’ve raced so it will be good to blow the cobwebs out. “Geelong is a great venue for the race. Last year I thought 90km on the bike would feel like forever but the multi-loop course goes relatively fast and the two-loop run has a lot of variety, which mentally makes it easier.” Ironman 70.3 Geelong is part of the Geelong Multi Sport Festival from Friday to Sunday. The main race starts 7.05am Sunday at Eastern Beach.

ANGLERS reported consistent captures around the region over the past week. Troy Armstrong caught nine quality whiting from his kayak near Alcoa Pier on the weekend then changed to soft plastics just before the water exploded with fish a few hundred metres away. He paddled over for 30 minutes of action on salmon around 1.5kg, boating four and losing many others. Guy Stevens found salmon while trolling close to shore between Point Lillias and the quarries. He caught over a dozen and four big pike, the biggest over one metre. Corey and Matt Knowles drifted with soft plastics over the Stingaree Bay spoil grounds on Sunday Corey, catching snapper to 48cm, pike, salmon and flathead. Tanner Martin cast small metal lures from Point Lillias, catching close to a dozen pike late during the evening high tide. Cunningham Pier produced snotty trevalla early in the morning, with anglers also reporting some big fish, perhaps kingfish, swimming around the pylons. Live baits might be worth trying to tempt these beasts. The best flathead captures were reported from the shallow water along the Bellarine Peninsula. Water under two metre seemed best for the truly big lizards. Colin McCallum anchored up in two metres off Portarlington where he set a liberal berley trail, which soon attracted a flathead to one of his baits under a float. He eventually caught nine, all quality fish. Whiting were spread out, requiring a number of shifts to find a shoal. Bag limit captures were reported from St Leonards to Queenscliff. Stan Porter anchored close to Swan Bay’s entrance where leatherjackets bit off many hooks. He escaped into shallower water where he soon boated some quality flathead. Salmon remained present around The Rip, although still staying below the surface and requiring the use of deep-diving lures or downriggers. A handful of kingfish were taken in various locations. Jigging the deep water of The Rip worked but

The waterfront venue is awesome and I have good memories there, winning two 70.3s and a couple of medals at Aussie titles.” Atkinson, who made the transition from short course to 70.3 last season, will again step up in distance when he takes on Ironman Melbourne in a little over a month. “My goals in 2014 season are focused around trying to master the full Ironman distance race and come October be competitive in Kona,” he said. “Geelong 70.3 will provide a great early hit out to evaluate just where my body is at with the new focus on the ironman.” Organisers expect big crowds in Geelong, with Olympian and two-time ITU

Brad Mitchell used fresh squid caught early Sunday to great use, landing a pair of 5kg gummies along with flathead and ever-present Port Jackson sharks. Dianne Goodfellow landed her first gummy, a fish around 4kg, while five-year-old daughter Tayla caught her maiden flathead for the year, putting pressure on husband and father Steve to pick up his act. A mix of species was taken offshore. Sharks were taken in 50m to 70m, snapper around 2kg boated off Black Rock and Collendina, salmon were found working the breakers at 13th Beach and kingfish were taken in small numbers off Barwon Heads and The Rip. Stripy tuna were sighted close to shore all the way from Barwon Heads to Lorne. Hopefully more will turn up working the surface in coming weeks. Michael Evans continued enjoying success on refin at Wurdi Boluc Reservoir in a just reward for his hard work on this sometimes-difficult water. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree produced trout and redfin on mudeye. Fly anglers fishing late in the evening and after dark grassed trout around 1.5kg on mudeye patterns. The Barwon River returned redfin on lure, with soft plastics out-fishing hard bodies. Anywhere between the Shannon Ave bridge to Ceres, Pollocksford or the junction with the Leigh River was worth trying. This weekend’s morning high tides should suit chasing snapper and salmon on soft plastics on the outerharbour spoil grounds.
