Clean up our streets ILLEGAL dumping of rubbish has increased across the City of Melton prompting the council to warn offenders that they will face hefty fines if caught. Melton City Council’s manager of operations Greg Wood said the council was disappointed that offenders continue use the city streets as their dumping ground. But he said the issue was a statewide problem and not specific to the municipality of Melton. Mr Wood said the council would continue to take a hands-on approach to stem the problem and urged residents to take pride in their community. “Council takes a proactive approach to addressing illegal dumping by undertaking surveillance, including covert surveillance at known hotspots, removing rubbish as soon as possible and issuing infringement notices to identified offenders,” he said. “We urge all residents who witness the dumping of waste to report these occurrences so the matter can be investig ated.” Mr Wood said the council takes great pride in the presentation of its streetscapes and works with the community to help keep the city clean.

“We have proactive systems in place to ensure that when littering or vandalism occurs it is dealt with promptly.” The call to keep the city clean comes just weeks ahead of Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, 2 March. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the day was a great opportunity for residents to take action and help preserve the local environment. “Clean up Australia Day is an easy way we can all get involved in cleaning up and preserve our parks, reserves and waterways,” Cr Turner said. “I encourage residents to muster their family, friends and neighbours and sign up for this important community initiative. You can register your own site or come along to one of the registered sites.” Cr Turner reminded residents that at any time throughout the year donations of reusable items like clothing, furniture, toys, books, bikes and cookware can be made to the Melton Resale Centre located in Ferris Rd. Litter reporting forms can be obtained from the council’s website or by calling the council’s waste services unit on 9747 7200.

Floral art comes from the heart ROSES are red, violets are blue and love is in the air - and so are the fragrant floral aromas which signal that upcoming special time of year, Valentine’s Day. Roxanne Scully from Bella Essence Florist at the Watervale Shopping Centre in Taylors Hill will soon be busy preparing many bouquets and bunches of blooms for Friday 14 February. After more than 15 years in the business, Ms Scully knows beautiful blossoms make an ideal gift for ladies - and men - on Valentine’s Day. 114061 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI

TEAL will be the hot new nail polish colour of the season with ladies across the Western Suburbs encouraged to get their nails ‘coloured for a cause’. Australians are being invited to paint their nails in the colour to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer this month. Chemmart Pharmacy and Ovarian Cancer Australia have joined forces for Ovarian Cancer Awareness month (February), with special limited edition teal nail polish packs being sold in selected stores. “We are encouraging people to have their nails painted and purchase the Colour for a Cause for $6.99 with the full proceeds going to Ovarian Cancer Australia,” said Altona North

Chemmart owner Denise Drew. “It’s a condition in which most people are unaware of the symptoms, so we are trying to promote the awareness of that,” Ms Drew said. Ms Drew and her staff have all painted their nails for the cause and are also offering instore manicures in return for a gold coin donation. Proceeds from the ‘Colour for a Cause’ polish packs and manicures will go to OCA to raise awareness of the symptoms, risks and impact of ovarian cancer and assist in the delivery of its awareness, support, advocacy and research programs. The team at Altona North will also continue their fundraising by hosting an ‘Afternoon Teal’ where they will bake

cupcakes to sell for a donation on Wednesday 26 February, which is also Teal Ribbon Day. “We hope to see Australians come out in force during February wearing their teal nail polish to show their support for women suffering from ovarian cancer and raise much needed funds for OCA,” said Chemmart Pharmacy Executive Director Johnathon Layton. Daring men are also encouraged to add a splash of colour in support of the cause. The Colour for a Cause nail polish packs are now available until stocks last at the Altona North, Melton, Watergardens and Keilor Village stores. For more information visit www.ovariancancer.net.au

A MELTON politician has joined the immunisation debate and called for mandatory legislation requiring children to be fully immunised before they receive a childcare placement. Melton MP Don Nardella has put his support behind the Labor Government’s proposal to introduce legislation requiring children to be fully immunised before they can enrol in childcare in an attempt to boost vaccination rates across the community. The ‘No Jab, No Play’ policy at childcare centres will require parents to provide an immunisation status certificate which states their child is fully immunised for their age. This will require an amendment to the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008. “Children who are not fully immunised will not be able to enrol in child care unless they have an approved exemption for a medical reason or their parents have a conscientious objection,” Mr Nardella said. “To receive this exemption, parents must receive counselling from a medical practitioner and state they have been advised of the risks of not immunising their child.” Mr Nardella said parents who refuse to vaccinate their child place not only their child at risk, but other children at risk also. He said if the proposed legislation is passed, childcare centres would be required to turn away children that are not vaccinated or face a fine. Leader of the Opposition Daniel Andrews cautioned parents to think wisely before making the decision not to immunise their child.

Sports timing theft leaves kids in lurch By XAVIER SMERDON

Mel Utber and Noraine Singletary inspect the damage. 114070 Picture: DAMJAN JANESKI

THOUSANDS of Western Suburbs children could miss out on vital sports activities after thieves robbed a Werribee athletics club. The Werribee Little Athletics storage shed at the Victoria University athletics track was broken into late last month. President of the club, Mel Utber, told Star she entered the shed on Wednesday 29 January after Wyndham Council’s Australia Day celebrations at the track just days earlier to find one of the rooms vandalised.

Doors were ripped off cupboards and empty boxes were left lying throughout the room. Aside from a few walkie talkies, the only thing of value to the club taken was a silver briefcase containing timing equipment. The equipment allows them to record and process every runner’s time and it is lent to schools within the area any time they are holding their own athletic events. Special Events co-ordinator at the club, Noraine Singletary, said the theft had rendered the club unable to hold running activities.

“Thousands of kids use this equipment. Approximately 60 to 70 schools rely on it,” Ms Singletary said. “And it’s not just Wyndham, we have schools in Yarraville, Newport and even Caroline Springs that need it.” The theft was reported to police and Ms Utber said the thieves would find no value in the stolen item. “It’s absolutely useless to anyone else but us, they don’t even have any of the cables they need to use it,” Ms Utber said. “It’s old equipment, so it’s not

even worth anything if they were to try and sell it. “Now we have to tell all the children that we can’t do our activities anymore. “We can’t do anything about it at the moment.” Ms Utber said she was “gutted” by the robbery and the club would be unable to afford new equipment to replace the stolen items, which would cost more than $11,000. Anyone with information regarding the incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

COUNCILS across the West want to make the region the next big tourist attraction. Western Melbourne Tourism, a regional cooperative funded with support from the Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham, Melton, Brimbank and Moonee Valley councils, will host a day-long forum next week in a bid to promote the West. Tourism Fest in the West will include keynote speakers Western Melbourne Tourism Patron Steve Bracks, destination marketing guru Simon McArthur, Professor Alison Morrison from Victoria University, as well as a range of other tourism industry leaders. “New food, new cultural communities, new arts venues and events - there is a lot to love about Melbourne’s West,” Mr Bracks said, “There is a new awakening and the region needs to prepare and market itself for increasing numbers of visitors.” Western Melbourne Tourism Executive Officer Richard Ponsford said the demographic of the West had rapidly changed, which has in turn changed the vibe and opportunities in the West. “There’s a lot more people visiting the West,” he said. “The traditional perception of the West is very industrial, flat and boring, but it’s actually full of change and new things. The whole image and brand of the West needs to be re-shaped. Tourism Fest in the West will be held on 18 February. For more information and to book, go to www.trybooking.com/71672

Turning out for Krissy gives hope Traffic blitz By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO THREE young children can now hope for a brighter future after the Melton community opened their hearts and their wallets last weekend. Residents from across Melton turned out to offer a helping hand, donate and enjoy the activities at the Cruise for Krissy event last Saturday. All of the money raised will go to a trust fund set up for the children of

Kristina Coffey who was diagnosed with breast cancer and a thyroid tumour in March 2012. After having a mastectomy and undergoing six cycles of chemotherapy, Ms Coffey found out she was pregnant and soon after was told the cancer had spread to her liver. She underwent a low dose of chemo and gave birth to her little miracle, Hope, in November last year. However, only weeks later the unthinkable happened and the

Now the brave mother is in palliative care and has been given only months to live while her children Bailey, 8, Shae, 6, and 10-week-old Hope watch on. After seeing an emotional post on Facebook from Ms Coffey’s best

friend, Melton resident Samantha Spiteri decided to host the fundraising event last weekend. “We’ve been inundated with people wanting to help us ... who would have thought this would happen, it’s gone viral,” Ms Spiteri said. “We’re all doing our best to help out the family, there’s such strong community spirit around Melton, even though it can get such a bad wrap sometimes.”

Cop that, dad A MELTON father has been criticised by police for teaching his eight and 12-year-old sons to “hoon” in a car. Media reports surfaced last week surrounding a video posted on YouTube showing car enthusiast Sam Surace with his eldest son Brandon driving on the family’s property and smoking up the tyres on one of their “muscle” cars. In the video Mr Surace defended his actions and said

there is a “right place and right time” to do burnouts and skids and said his family had “fun in the car on private property or at a closed circuit event”. “The sport is a burnout sport where we have fun with our cars, it is probably a safer sport than taking your kids hunting where a gun can accidentally discharge or taking your kids fishing where they could go overboard. “We’re just having fun with my family. “They say when the kids get

their learners they should have 120 hours of driving experience, well my kids will have 10 years of driving experience ... it’s good parenting.” However members of the Victoria Police State Highway Patrol have slammed the father’s actions and said the cars could be impounded for hoon offences, including improper use and intentional loss of traction, regardless if they were committed on private property or public roads. MELTON City councillors and officers are confident that traffic in Diggers Rest will improve after the final report for the Diggers Rest Local Area Traffic Management Study was adopted last week. As last week’s meeting, the council unanimously adopted the final report which was initiated primarily to improve traffic management in the area both in the short and long term. The report presented to the council states that the interim plan will address significant

issues like traffic speed and irresponsible driving, with traffic survey data revealing vehicle speeds in the area are among the highest in the municipality. In the report council officer Luke Shannon said the population of Diggers Rest is expected to grow from 1930 to 13,900 upon full development of the Diggers Rest Precinct Structure Plan Area. The improvements would include extension of Houdini Drive to the west of Vineyard Rd and extension of License Rd from Plumpton Rd, traffic sig-

nals at the intersection of Vineyard Rd and Houdini Drive and a roundabout at Vineyard and License roads. It is also proposed that six speed humps be installed on Welcome Rd and four on the Calder Highway, with a total of 20 installed across the area. The LATM has come under fire in the past with residents worried the suburb will become “speed hump city”. Residents were also concerned with the number of parking bays that would be lost on Welcome Rd.

Nursing home to remain open By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO MELTON City Council has vowed to continue the battle to keep Reg Geary House open. At last week’s council meeting a report was tabled, outlining the recommendations for the council and the latest proceedings in the matter. In October 2013, Western Health announced it would close the 30-bed nursing home in June this year due to the council-owned building no longer meeting the needs of residents. At the meeting, council officers assured residents that the

council would continue to work with Western Health in the hope the facility can remain open. However, Maurie Heaney admitted the building was in need of extensive renovation. Melton mayor Bob Turner questioned the possibility of the facility remaining a viable service provider. Mr Heaney said in its current form it was not manageable as a service provider but might be renovated or extended in the future to make it a 90-bed facility. Presently, the number of residents at the facility has dwindled to 14.

Guided walk in gardens PRESIDENT of Friends of Melton Botanic Garden (FMBG) John Bentley will host a guided tour throughout the gardens. The free walks will run this Wednesday 12 February, Sunday 16 February and Friday 21 February from 10am and will be followed by a morning tea. As part of the Sustainable Living Festival, Melton City Council is also offering tours of the Melton Library and Learning Hub. Residents are invited to take part in the tours on Friday 14 February, between 2pm and 4pm to learn more about the building’s sustainable features.

Western Health has assured residents and their families that staff will work with them a suitable relocation option. Executive director of Operations Russell Harrison said every resident would have the assistance of a staff member who would work with them and their family, to consider their preferences and look at a range of options. “The care of the residents between now and the time of the closure will continue to be of the highest standard and the wellbeing of the residents is our paramount concern,” Mr Harrison said.

Duo arrested after daylight robbery By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK police have arrested two men after a woman was robbed in a St Albans street in broad daylight on Sunday 2 February. The robbery happened as the victim, a 45-year old lady, was walking along the footpath in Victoria Crescent doing her shopping around 1.30pm. Acting Detective Sergeant Matt Illingworth, from the Brimbank Embona squad, said a silver car pulled up alongside the woman and a male ran out of the vehicle.

He proceeded to “jump on” the woman and steal her purse which contained cash. Acting Sgt Illingworth said the woman’s knees and legs were injured during the scuffle and after being dragged along the ground for a short distance. The Brimbank Embona unit, which responded to the triplezero callout and conducted the investigation, arrested two men on Tuesday last week. One man, a 27-year-old Kings Park resident, has been charged and remanded in custody after police executed a

search warrant at his home and seized evidence. His co-accused, a 35-yearold male from Melton, was arrested in Broadmeadows on the same day. The Melton resident was allegedly driving the silver car when the robbery occurred. He was taken to the Sunshine police station and interviewed, charged and bailed in relation to the case. Acting Sgt Illingworth praised his officers for achieving a “quick result” when investigating the robbery.

Murphy’s law By ADEM SARICAOGLU INCOMING playing coach Brad Murphy has instilled a new level of professionalism into the Melton Bloods’ preparation for the upcoming Ballarat Football League season. The former Western Bulldog and Hoppers Crossing captain is currently printing his stamp on a newly revamped Bloods squad in what has so far been a heavy pre-season on the track. Coming off a disappointing 2013 season that yielded just one win, Murphy has been keen ensure his side is ready to compete this time around. “We’re slowly filtering in a bit of game plan stuff through to the players at the moment,” Murphy explained. “We’ve got a session this week designed to sit down and go through the whole thing. I’ve put together 10 pages of documents for each player and we’ll go through that this week about how we’re going to be playing and different setups and all that sort of stuff. “We’ve also been doing a lot of speed testing and fitness testing and our speed testing’s gone through the roof. But we also understand that you can run as many laps as you want - it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to win you games of footy.” For all the video analysis and specialist training Murphy has overseen so far this summer, he said it remains dif-

ficult to assess just how the new-look Bloods will stack up in the BFL this coming season. For now, Murphy would rather wait and see just how Melton’s intense preseason will manifest itself on the field come April and beyond. “We really don’t want to put a winloss ratio on our improvement, it could be straight to the top of the ladder or it could also mean we don’t go up the ladder at all,” Murphy said. “I think our improvement’s going to come from within and what we see as guys improving. We want guys to individually improve but we also want the club to improve on and off the field. “Until the season starts we’re pretty unsure of where we’re going to finish but I’d hope to see some pretty drastic improvement individually and as a team.” Having already announced a host of new signings prior to the New Year, Melton has since added Hillside premiership hard man Justin Chircop, among others, to its growing list of experienced recruits. Murphy said he hopes Melton’s increased fitness in combination with the experience the club has managed to obtain will result in more free-flowing Bloods’ football in 2014. Melton will begin its new BFL campaign at home to Sebastopol in midApril.

LEG spinner Nathan Allen helped put his Melton Lions in the box seat to get their first win since October with a stunning seven-wicket haul in SubDistrict Cricket on Saturday. In a two-dayer restricted to 65-overs-a-side, the Lions were able to dismiss fellow VSDCA battler Sunshine for just 137 runs in 62.3 overs on the road at Dempster Park. Allen simply tore the game apart in the hot conditions after Paul Halfhide (2/29) and Jake Charge (1/4) were able to claim three early wickets for Melton early in the day. The leggie, who before Saturday had only claimed 18 wickets for the entire summer,

THE highly successful combination of owner Rob Nalder and Long Forest trainer Andy Gath produced a nice type in Bettors Delight/LC Tricky colt Padrisimo to impressively land the Viatex Two-Year-Old Pace over 1710 metres on debut at Bray Raceway Ballarat last Tuesday. Driven by Andy’s wife Kate, Padrisimo wasn’t pushed from gate two, settling three back from the markers, with Shadow Of Fortune burning across the face of the field from outside the front row to lead. Easing away from the markers in the final circuit, Padrisimo showed a brilliant turn of speed to lead prior to the home turn, scoring by a margin of 14.1 metres in advance of Aurelius also on debut which followed him home, with Shadow Of Fortune holding down third. The mile rate 2-00.2.

took all of the remaining Sunshine wickets to end the day’s play with figures of 7/42 and three maidens from 18.3 overs in the middle. Melton vice-president and batsman Anthony Gale told Star the conditions and wicket suited Allen on Saturday. “The ball didn’t quite come on, which means you had to be able to get down to him and he was a bit too quick in the air for them to do that,” Gale explained. “He just bowled tight from up one end for the last 17 overs and just landed the ball well. “They (Sunshine) got a bit flustered and played some loose shots but it was well-deserved after a hard day.” While Allen’s seven wickets

was the clear highlight, Gale was keen to praise Melton’s efforts in the scorching conditions throughout the entire day. “It wasn’t an easy deck to score on but we bowled and fielded really well,” he said. “It was obviously tough going - but the boys bowled really well and it was probably the best we’ve bowled all year.” Needing only 138 runs in 65 overs to claim victory this weekend, Gale said there is a lot of confidence in the Melton dressing room ahead of the upcoming run chase. “We’ve just got to bat out 65 overs,” Gale said. “So we’ll go in confident this week and aim to just bat sensibly and if you bat for 65 overs, you’ll win the game.”

PARWAN part-owner/trainer Jaime Madruga’s honest DM Dilinger/JaJa gelding Amazing Kano chalked up his 11th victory in 64 outings by taking the Durham Park Pace for C3 and C4 class over 2200 metres at Ballarat. Taking a concession for Meltonian Zac Phillips, Amazing Kano (gate five) was restrained to settle five back along the markers, with in-form mare Union Belle leading from gate three. Moving to be one/one racing for the bell trailing Atomic Horizon, Amazing Kano when taken three wide on the home turn, finished strongly to blouse a game Atomic Horizon by a neck in 2-00.9, with Union Belle weakening to finish third. BACCHUS Marsh father and daughter - Alan and Amy Tubbs scored a terrific victory with Bettors Delight/Saabette mare Lierre Noir in the Tint Centralpace for C1 class over 1710 metres. Forced to do all of the work from gate five outside the pacemaker Action Royale (gate two), Lierre Noir dug deep on straightening to gain the day by 4.6 metres over Three Gold Bars which trailed the pacemaker, easing wide in the straight, with Crazy Dave running on late for third. The mile rate 1-58.4. Amy was on a high after winning the Mildura Drivers Championship the previous Friday, but was extremely disappointed when her all-time favourite Melpark Major was retired after finishing unplaced at Melton on the Saturday. MELTON trainer/driver Paul Grech’s speedy Sundon/Panbrake five-year-old gelding Mister Gunsen upstaged his more fancied rivals when successful in the Bendigo Bank Trotters Mobile for T2 to T4 class over 2240 metres at the St Arnaud HRC fixture held at Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday. Showing his customary gate speed from barrier two, Mister Gunsen led with no pressure being applied by the hot favourite Quite A Moment who was content to lope along outside him. Giving plenty on turning, Mister Gunsen defied all challengers to score by a half neck over Quite A Moment and Dawn Tears (one/one) in a mile rate of 2-00.8. It was Mister Gunsen’s 12th victory in 70 outings. MEETINGS for the week: Wednesday - Geelong @ Melton/Shepparton, Thursday - Kilmore/Bendigo, Friday - Ballarat, Saturday - Melton, Sunday - Charlton (Cup), Monday - Horsham, Tuesday - Cranbourne. Horses to follow: Illawong Travel, Real Elegance, Gollahman, Onetolove, Indulgent, Admiral Joy, Well Oiled Lombo, Mister Scorcher, Jay Dee Zed, Glenferrie Typhoon.

Cultivating sport habit early ONLY six out of 10 children aged between five and 14 years participate in sport outside of school, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The Australian Health Survey conducted in April 2012 found that 25 per cent of Australian children and teenagers, aged five to 17 years, are overweight or obese, indicating that we need to foster a more sports-minded

culture that encourages children to be physically active. People who are active dramatically reduce their risk of many diseases, including heart disease and osteoporosis. Regular exercise is also known to reduce the risk of emotional problems such as anxiety and depression. Habits are established early in life, and evidence suggests that physically

active children are more likely to mature into physically active adults. Some of the many benefits of sport participation for children include a reduced risk of obesity, increased cardiovascular fitness, healthy growth of bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons, improved co-ordination and balance and a greater ability to physically relax and,

therefore, avoid the complications of chronic muscular tension such as headache or back ache. There are also mental health benefits, such as greater confidence, improved social skills, improved personal skills including co-operation and leadership. Reducing inactivity may be more effective in achieving overall increases in energy levels in young children than putting the emphasis on increasing involvement in sporting activities. Taking steps to reduce children’s sedentary time is important. According to the Bureau of

Statistics, over the 12 months prior to April 2012 in Australia, 1.7 million or 60 per cent of children aged five to 14 years participated in at least one sport outside of school hours that had been organised by a school, club or association. Participation among boys (949,000) exceeded that of girls (727,000), both overall and within each age group category. Children aged nine to 11 years were most likely to participate in sport (66 per cent). The three most popular organised sports for boys in 2011 to 2012 were soccer (22 per cent of total), swimming and Australian rules football. For girls, swimming/diving (19 per

cent of total) and netball were predominant. Parents can help their children to be physically active in a number of ways by leading by example and engaging in physical activity. Make sure that some family outings offer opportunities for physical activity, such as playing sport together and encouraging children to walk or ride their bicycle for short trips, rather than rely on their parents to drive them. Most importantly, support your child’s efforts in sport. Make sure you’re there at each match, cheering them on from the sidelines.

Roadstar Caddy geared for fast lane LIFE is always busy. But with a Caddy it can be fun. With efficient engines, intelligent use of space, superb performance and brilliant handling, Caddy is a smart choice and genuinely enjoyable to drive. The Caddy range has been designed to match your busy urban lifestyle. Monday to Friday, you’ve got a myriad of work commitments and need a vehicle that is agile, comfortable, versatile and efficient. It has to be easy to get around the city and easy to park too. After-hours, there are kids to collect from band practice and sport - “Hey Mum, can we give my mates a lift home too?” Enroute, you’ll need to duck in to pick up a week’s worth of groceries that fit alongside the sports bags and guitar cases in the boot. Caddy takes all this in its stride and makes your working week a joy. Typically though, life on the weekends gets even busier. The latest Caddy has a stylish face that matches the Volkswagen DNA, thanks to sleek headlights and a redesigned bumper and grille, which are paired with an elegant bonnet and front guards. Overall, the Caddy range has a more refined, more sophisticated front end. But it’s not just a pretty face. Caddy sports instrumenta-

tion, audio/navigation system and a range of engine and transmission options that achieve impressive fuel consumption and environmental figures. As you would expect, the build quality and attention to detail is typically Volkswagen. And when you add the impressive list of safety and security features in the Caddy, it’s a choice that makes tremendous sense. Safety features include driver and front passenger airbags with side head and thorax airbags for added protection. Caddy also features electronic stability programme and traction control system as standard, which will keep you safe when the road conditions aren’t. You’ll also benefit from antilock braking system, electronic brake assist and electronic brake distribution - absolute essentials for protecting life on the road. And for added peace of mind, the Caddy now comes with a threeyear unlimited kilometre warranty and capped price servicing. To test drive this vehicle, visit Werribee Volkswagen at 8-12 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, on Monday to Saturday 8.30am-6pm, Sundays 10am5pm, or call 9974 5777 for more information.

A trip through the country is a breeze in the Volkswagen Caddy.
