n Police search for answers after bizarre attack leaves man senseless...

Roadside ambush By MELISSA MEEHAN

A WOMAN named Meredith could hold the missing piece to the puzzle regarding a violent attack in Yellingbo last week. The attack has left a 51-year-old Warburton man in a serious condition in hospital in what police describe as “in a pretty bad way”. Lilydale CIU Detective Sargent Allan Price said “Meredith” could answer a number of questions concerning what eventuated, because the victim was not yet able to speak with police. It is believed the man drove to Macclesfield Road when his female housemate called saying her car had broken down and she needed his assistance. “While she was waiting, we believe she went to the toilet in the bushes and heard yelling and screaming,” Det Sgt Price said. “Scared for her own safety she then fled, and was able to get a lift (with Meredith) to the Belgrave Police Station to report what had happened.” He said that the man was assaulted with what is believed to be a large iron bar, and that his attackers left the scene in the car. “It’s a rural road, but would have been pretty busy given the time of day,” Det Sgt Price said. Witnesses have told the Mail and police they saw a man in his twenties beating something into a drain with an iron bar, not realising he was attacking a person. When the man stopped the attack, he and three others - another man and two women - got back into a car and drove off. As the group left, witnesses realised that there was a man injured in the gutter, with serious head wounds so they called police and an ambulance. “He had some serious head wounds, and was conscious but incoherent,” Monbulk’s Leading Senior Constable Glenn Barkaway, who attended the scene, said. The victim has fractured skull as a result of the attack. He remains in hospital at The Alfred. The woman known as Meredith is believed to be driving a beige-coloured Ford Territory. Police are also searching for the stolen blue Ford sedan, registration UQG 947. Investigators urge anyone with information about the incident or whereabouts of the blue Ford sedan to come forward or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

THE first of two story boards marking 100 years since then Colonel John Monash marched 3000 citizen soldiers into Lilydale was erected at Lillydale Lake on Sunday. A militia camp was set up in the basin that is largely now Lillydale Lake as part of compulsory civilian military training for boys and young men between 12 and 26. The combat training including battalion drills, musketry practice and a mock battle at Mount Mary near Coldstream which was aimed at training them to defend a developing Australia, should the need arise. The troops arrived at Lilydale by train and were marched through the town to set up camp in conditions very much like those experienced by the people standing on the hilltop at Lillydale Lake on Sunday - extreme heat and blustery winds with fires burning to the east. Brigadier (retired) Michael Phelps AM welcomed guests, members of the organising committee and members of the public, some of whom had connections going back to those who attended the camp. Former Victorian Premier and chairman of the Victorian Anzac Centenary Committee Ted Baillieu, local historian and author of Monash’s Militia Camp Anthony McAleer, Casey MP Tony Smith

Captain Ryan Bell from 5th/6th Battalion Royal Victoria Regiment and Brigadier (retired) Michael Phelps AM unveiled the storyboard to mark the centenary of the Monash militia camp. 114589 and the great-grandson of Sir John Monash, Michael Bennett, each spoke of the event recognising it as an important part of both the district’s military history and an important and fascinating window into Australia’s pre-World War I history. Mr Baillieu set the scene of the militia camp against the larger backdrop of the increasingly threatening situation in Europe saying Victoria

was a peaceful and prosperous place at the time. “The citizen soldiers, aged from 12 to 26 were no different form our cadets here today, and there were 3000 of them,” he said acknowledging the young Australian Air Force cadets who along with the Australian Great War Association formed the guard of honour.

Mount Evelyn RSL president Roger Boness said the history boards, the second of which will be launched at Coldstream on Thursday, and launch of the RSL’s second history book was an important part of the RSL’s role in preserving and recording local military heritage. Drive proves a formula for success By JESSE GRAHAM THE Yarra Valley had an unexpected visitor last week as a Formula One car took to TarraWarra Estate’s vineyards at sunrise before traversing the Dandenong Ranges. The car was driven at TarraWarra Estate at sunrise on Wednesday 5 February with Cameron McConville behind the wheel and Australian Grand Prix Ambassador Georgia Geminder riding shotgun. The Formula One visit was a publicity stunt to bring attention to the Formula One Rolex Australian Grand Prix, which will begin in about five weeks. Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO Andrew Westacott said the Grant Prix was the cornerstone of Victoria’s major events calendar and that he was pleased to promote the event and the Yarra

Valley and Dandenongs at the same time. “Formula One showcases this state on the world stage and we strongly believe that this activity will attract more international visitors to Puffing Billy and the Yarra Valley region in future,” he said. Tourism Victoria and VicRoads worked in conjunction with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation to ensure that safety was paramount - road closures were undertaken for the safety of drivers. Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher said she was pleased with how last week’s event promoted Melbourne and regional Victoria in exciting ways on an international level. For more information on the Grand Prix, visit www.grandprix.com.au.

Living Victoria Fund Round Two

A Formula One vehicle weaved its way to TarraWarra Estate last week.

The Victorian Government is delivering a smarter, more sustainable and affordable approach to managing Victoria’s urban water needs. This involves introducing whole-ofwater-cycle management and making much greater use of rainwater, stormwater and recycled water for non-drinking purposes. To drive the transformation of our urban water systems the Victorian Government is opening Round Two of the Living Victoria Fund.

Through the Fund, up to $15 million is available to assist community organisations, education institutions, sporting groups, local councils and the private sector to deliver whole-of-water-cycle projects. This investment is designed to enhance Victoria’s liveability by making better use of local water. The Ofice of Living Victoria administers the Living Victoria Fund and funding guidelines can be found at livingvictoria.vic.gov.au Applications close 17 March 2014.

Gladysdale’s fast fire

Briefly Marquee missing A MARQUEE has been stolen from racegoers at the Healesville Racecourse. Police are encouraging anyone with information to come forward. Healesville police Sergeant Stewart Thomson said the marquee was taken about 5.30pm on 1 February. He said the owner had stepped away from the marquee as crowds were dispersing in the afternoon, and came back to find it packed up and gone. Sgt Thomson said the marquee was valued at $1000, and may have been taken by someone in a dark grey coloured dual-cab ute. He said that, while it may have been taken in error by someone at the races, police were treating the item as stolen, and are asking for it to be returned to the police. Anyone with information is asked to call 5962 4422.

Skate park warning

Hoddles Creek and Gruyere firefighters working on a creek-bed at the Gladysdale fire. 114521 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY that point. He said at the peak of firefighting activity 150 fire-fighters were on the ground and around 40 to 50 units. John Marchese, who has had over 25 years’ experience as a machinery operator in bushfires said the response was well organised and executed. “We had a dozer up there putting in containment lines and taking out dangerous trees, he said. Firefighters on the ground looked on with admiration at one point as Vince Marchese positioned his excavator, nudging gently as a huge burning gum threatened to fall helped by wind gusts along the creek bed. Mr Marchese said the tree was sparking with the potential to start spot fires in dry trees and leaf litter at a nearby house and kilometres away in bushland, as well as being potentially deadly to firefighters. He praised the response from emer-

gency services. “On a day like yesterday (Sunday) it could have turned really bad. I got the phone call from John Carter (DEPI) at the ICC in Woori and luckily the resources all turned up pretty quickly, he said. “DEPI and the CFA had 20 or 30 trucks there within an hour; they’re working well together these days, he said. The Gladysdale fire burnt out 26 hectares of grassland and scrub and the Powelltown fire has burnt through 428 hectares of forest. Woori Yallock ICC said on Monday containment lines had been established around both fires, but that crews were still on site. Up to date information and warnings can be accessed at emergency.vic.gov.au, on the FireReady App or phone the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

SKATERS have been given a firm warning by Healesville police after reports of vandalism, graffiti and poor behaviour at Healesville’s new skate park. He warned those doing the wrong thing that, while they have been given free run of the park in recent weeks, police would be cracking down on any offences. “You’ve been given a great facility, and have been given a free-run on that, he said. “But, if you continue to behave this way, it’s going to be enforced, monitored, potentially fenced and locked. The skate park drew criticism from the public weeks before its official opening after users left the park littered with rubbish, with a bin nearby left unused.

For Upper Yarra art group Artrageous Painters however, the six hotels that have provided not only a watering hole, but a meeting place, meal and shelter over many decades for locals and visitors, proved surprisingly inspiring. The pubs, and their patrons, were the Woori Yal-

UPPER Yarra communities awoke to Watch and Act alerts on Sunday morning as a fast-moving grassfire in Gladysdale spread into scrub. By noon the two-week-old Powelltown fire that started in a logging coup on the Australia Day weekend had also flared up as emergency resources were stretched with dozens of fires erupting across the state. Gladysdale resident Jodi Dyball said she and her partner went outside after receiving the first alert just after 8am. “If we hadn’t got the alert we wouldn’t have gone outside. The alert saying ‘0 kilometres’ from where we are made us go outside and have a look, she said. They didn’t have to go far. The fire was just up the road and she said they were very grateful to be able to get in quickly and evacuate their horses before the fire spread and the area was locked off. Local DEPI contractors, brothers John and Vince Marchese from VJ Plant Hire in Gladysdale also got the call early from the Woori Yallock Incident Control Centre and were able to move dozers and excavators onto the fire ground as air bombers and CFA, DEPI and VicForest fire crews poured into the Little Yarra Valley. Local crews from around the Yarra Valley and Yarra Ranges were supported by strike teams from as far away as the Mornington Peninsula. By around 10.30am when the Mail was allowed into the area crews were blacking out along the Yarra Junction-Noojee road where the fire started and in nearby paddocks, scrub and along a heavily-treed creekbed just a couple of hundred metres from a house and farm buildings. Water bombers had also been called in early from Healesville and Olinda and were able to maximise their impact with good water supplies nearby. Incident Controller David Nugent told the Mail late on Sunday afternoon people needed to stay aware of conditions and continue to monitor the fire activity in their area. He said the Powelltown Learmonth Road was spotting outside the containment lines established over the past week or so and was burning in steep, tall forest. Neither fire was threatening communities at

Pause to remember Black Saturday By JESSE GRAHAM COMMUNITY members stopped for a minute of silence on Friday night, as residents gathered from across the Yarra Ranges to mark the fifth anniversary of Black Saturday. Around 60 people gathered at Yarra Glen’s McKenzie Reserve on Friday 7 February, for a memorial event, five years after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires tore through the area. Residents gathered at 6pm for a barbecue run by Yarra Glen’s Heartland Church, before Yarra Ranges Mayor

Fiona McAllister, Casey MP Tony Smith and Heartland Church Pastor Mike Baimbridge all made speeches. Mr Baimbridge gave an analogy of a motorcycle crash in 1999 that left his collarbone broken for a long period of time, which has since become stronger he said the community, in the years since the fires, had taken a similar journey. “Post-trauma can be and is stressful, but can also be a time of immense growth. “How others recover is not the benchmark for you.”

Mr Smith said while it had been over 1800 days since the bushfires struck the area, for some people, it’s still yesterday. He said that the fifth anniversary gave the community an opportunity to reflect on all that had passed since the tragic event. “It’s a time to remember, a time to reflect on the preciousness of life and its passing nature - its precariousness,” he said. Following the speeches, community members wrote messages and names on

leaves and pieces of paper, before hanging them on a tree placed next to the bushfire memorial. Some then spread flower petals over a small bowl of water nearby, while members of the RecLink Rocky Road Choir performed for the attendees. To mark the fifth anniversary of Black Saturday, a picture gallery comparing bushfire stricken areas in 2009 with more recent photographs, along with personal stories from the Mail’s editorial team were posted online. Toxic tip blaze tests firies By JESSE GRAHAM A FIRE that drew more than 100 CFA members to Coldstream’s landfill site last week has been unofficially named the town’s largest outbreak, with crews working eight hours to contain the blaze. At 5.55pm on Thursday 6 February, CFA crews were called out to a fire that started at the Coldstream Recovery and Waste Transfer Centre on Ingram Road. Coldstream Fire Brigade Captain John Fenton said the fire had started in some of the bins at the centre, and that the smoke was highly toxic. “When I got out of my front door and saw black smoke bil-

lowing in the air, I knew we had a job on our hands,” he said. Around 30 fire trucks and vehicles attended the fire, with Dandenong, Scoresby, Bayswater, Yellingbo, Yarra Glen, Lilydale, Healesville, Gruyere, Mount Evelyn, Wandin, Montrose and Hillcrest fire brigades assisting the Coldstream crew. Capt Fenton said around 100 fire-fighters were on the scene trying to contain the fire, which spread to all of the bins at the centre, and ignited some of the surrounding bushland. “Within minutes, all the bins took off and it became a massive inferno of the different fires,” he said. He said that firefighters donned breathing apparatus and

were regularly rotated to ensure their own safety while battling the blaze, which was eventually given the all-clear at around 1.30am Friday 7 February. An ambulance was on standby at the fire as a precaution for fire-fighters exposed to the chemicals in the smoke, while residents were told by the CFA to turn off their air-conditioners and to keep doors and windows closed. Capt Fenton said that the fire was probably the largest in Coldstream’s history, and thanked other brigades and members for their support. “It was just incredible - we were one organisation working as one body,” he said. “It was a brilliant job.”

NEITHER the CFA nor the SES has a clear understanding of the number of volunteers they have available, according to a report tabled in State Parliament last week. The Auditor-General’s ‘Managing Emergency Services Volunteers Report’ put the effective management by the Country Fire Authority and State Emergency Services under the microscope with some damning findings including overestimating their emergency response capabilities. A statement released by the Auditor-General’s office on 5 February said while CFA and SES’s volunteers were around 57,500 and 5000 respectively, and despite the significant reliance on volunteers, neither had a sound understanding of the total number of volunteers needed

to fulfil their operational requirements. The report found the CFA did not know how many volunteers it needs, and SES data on how many volunteers it had was unreliable. The report was critical of the organisations’ decentralised approaches to recruitment, training and deployment of volunteers which it said meant neither agency could be assured they were effectively addressing workforce needs. “The CFA is in the process of implementing programs that aim to address these concerns, however, SES attempts to resolve these issues are presently inadequate,” the statement said. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells said on 5 February that the government and the CFA and SES welcomed the report. He said both agencies were

already in the process of implementing the recommendations. “I am assured by both agencies that these issues are being addressed, with processes in place even before the AuditorGeneral’s audit was released, he said. The recommendations include both organisations evaluate volunteer support systems and processes and explore further opportunities to collaborate with each other, the CFA develop exit surveys to find out why volunteers leave and improve brigade operational skills profiles to reflect volunteer activity and availability, and for the SES to improve Emergency Response Activity Standards enhanced (ERAS-e) profiles to reflect volunteer activity and availability and align them with its planning cycle.

Waste not, want not I THINK we are lucky to have this yearly hard rubbish collection service provided. The shire informs us via its newsletter when the rubbish collection will commence in our area. If in doubt, call them. What makes me a little angry is the fact that far too many householders start putting their rubbish out weeks early. I walk past one of those households who now has grass growing over the rubbish that was put out months ago. I guess I will see it there for an other year. Perhaps some flowers will grow one day, and hide the lot!? Putting it out weeks early, litters our streets and drains. Not a good look! If people come by and find things that they can use, why not let them take it, as long as they are careful not to pull stuff from under other items and just leave the rest strewn all over the nature strip as it happens far too often. Dagmar Limp, Warburton.

Wildlife heat welfare

The role is for an Advertising Sales Executive. Working to targets/KPI along with both phone and direct selling experience will be highly considered.

AS WE all struggle to keep ourselves and our pets cool and hydrated in the hot weather, spare a thought for our wildlife who also suffer terribly from heat stress. Some tips to help them during days of high temperature are fill up a bird bath with fresh, cool water, preferably twice a day and place dishes of cool water on carport roofs and on the ground. Buckets of water should have a stick

within them so that the animals don’t drown. Most importantly, restrict the movement of domestic animals such as dogs and cats because the treedwelling wildlife come to ground in the heat searching for water and are often attacked and killed. So, on behalf of all creatures, great and small, especially the wild ones, please make water available to us in the heat. If you find a native critter suffering from heat stress, please call Help for Wildlife on 0417 380 687, or call your local wildlife carer. Wildlife shelter numbers can be found in your local telephone book. Josiah Klein, Badger Creek.

Wild times remembered AL AND Carol Seppings love live music. Their love of live music and care for their community has been a much appreciated feature of their 17 year tenure at Wild Thyme Café, located in the heart of Warburton. Supporting community projects and local bands through the use of the venue, from young fresh school groups to crusty old buggers and everyone in between has been a main attraction of the venue and has endeared them to the broader Yarra Valley community. Many a music career has benefited from the Wild Thyme stage, one of very few in the region. They are not alone in their keen sense that participating in live music, whether as a performer or punter, boosts physical and mental health of

individuals and communities. It enhances self-esteem and selfconfidence, improves immunity, lowers stress levels and lifts mood. It is also an opportunity to break down social barriers and work towards social inclusion in communities. Wild Thyme is currently for sale and there are a number of interested parties. A formal offer may occur in the very near future, which has prompted a few locals to organise a ‘thankyou Al and Carol, we love live music too’ event. The event is scheduled for this Sunday afternoon February 16, and will be held at the Wild Thyme Café, Warburton. The event will feature a broad selection of local bands and musicians that have enjoyed and benefitted from the Wild Thyme stage over the years. It will be a family friendly event, with activities for all ages. Keep an eye out for posters, and check out the Wild Thyme website for details. Thanks Al and Carol, we love live music too! Natalee Cairns, Warburton.

Hard word on rubbish I DON’T mind people taking anything from my hard rubbish, but I mind very much when people dump their hard rubbish onto my nature strip, especially if it is uncollectable and then I have to deal with it. This has happened many times. Perhaps it’s because I live on the highway and it’s easy to dump and go. Sue Hylkema, Woori Yallock.

Outdoor grants for playtime FOUR local kindergartens will receive $40,000 worth of grants between them thanks to educational capital funding. Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe said Fernhill, Lilydale North and Wandin North

Preschools, and Morrisons Kindergarten will all receive $10,000 grants from the State Government. Ms Fyffe said the funding would be used to construct shaded areas, including verandahs and pergolas, allowing children to learn

and play through all weather conditions, year-round. Ms Fyffe said the four local kindergartens are among 87 from around Victoria sharing in $700,000 funding. “This funding will allow our local preschools to make

Pooling their thoughts By JESSE GRAHAM THE ISSUE of Healesville Indoor Pool’s financial struggle has motivated residents, with an action group forming and lengthy letters being sent in search of a solution. Healesville resident Liz Patterson sent the Mail a 1600-word letter last week, discussing the benefits of the Jack Hort Memorial Pool and the need to keep it open to the public until a new facility is built. Ms Patterson’s letter follows recent headlines about the 24-year-old pool,

“When the pool still opened at 6am on three mornings a week, there was a group of women who would drive from Kinglake to swim before heading to work. “Two were battling their weight and one had chronic pain. The pool can no longer afford to open early, and I often wonder if they still swim.” Ms Patterson said that, despite the pool “running on a shoestring” and going to “rack and ruin” cosmetically, the staff had maintained high standards when it came to water quality, hygiene and service.

which could see its doors close in the next 12 months due to rising maintenance costs and a $50,000 deficit. In her letter, Ms Patterson urges the buck-passing to stop, and for the community and the Yarra Ranges Council to collaborate on a solution. She wrote that, when she moved to town eight years ago, she taught lessons at the pool, and that swimmers came from far and wide to experience Healesville’s heated pool. “My students came from as far as Gruyere, Yarra Glen, Castella and Narbethong,” she wrote.

She wrote that the current issue of the pool was an issue of “health, wellbeing and social justice”, and said the expectation of the high school footing the bills of the pool should stop. Meanwhile, residents angered by the cuts to hours at the pool have been working to form an action group, with many people “ropeable”, according to Healesville’s Helen CampbellDrury. Ms Campbell-Drury said the aim of the group, and her aim personally, was to help get the pool back open seven days a week, to its original hours, until a new

aquatics centre opens. Healesville Pool Manager Ross Ilsley told the Mail last week that the pool, despite its cuts, had had a large attendance over the recent weeks, with 300 visitors each weekday - including school groups - and between 70-90 visitors on Saturday mornings. “Unfortunately, this won’t last as the weather cools down,” he wrote in an email. Skills under one shed roof A NEW men’s shed will soon be built for Toolangi residents following a $69,000 funding boost from the state government and the local community. Seymour MP Cindy McLeish announced a $45,000 funding grant for Toolangi Castella District Community House late last month. The money will complement $24,780 in funding from other community organisations giving the

group $69,780 for the construction of a new men’s shed in the town. A community house spokesperson said members were very pleased and keen to get the shed up-and-running, though a timeline was not yet available regarding the funding. The new men’s shed will be constructed at the old Toolangi CFA building, with new disabled toilets, a kitchen area and solar panels to be constructed at the site. Insulation and boarding will also

A PROTEST in the Toolangi State Forest on the fifth anniversary of the Black Saturday bushfires has been dubbed “disgraceful” by an infuriated member of the timber industry. Police were called out to Hardy Creek Road in the Toolangi State Forest at 5am on Friday 7 February, after around 13 members of the Central Highlands Action Group (CHAG) blocked off a road into a logging coupe. Two of the protesters chained themselves to a gate, stopping Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) contractors from entering the coupe. Yea Police were called out to the scene to assist, but said that the Search and Rescue department would be needed to remove the protesters. However, the Search and Rescue team were over three hours away when Yea Police Sergeant Connell spoke to the Mail at noon on the day, and said the contractors had decided to leave. Friends of Forestry (FoF) Executive Graham Taylor said that he was infuriated by the date of the protest, which fell on the fifth anniversary of Black Saturday. “Black Saturday is something to the timber industry - it strikes everybody’s hearts,” he said. “The machines, the personnel, were all called upon to fight Black Saturday, and it’s hard enough for them to go through a five-year anniversary. “To stage a stunt like this on the anniversary, while everyday timber workers are trying to go about their jobs is a disgrace.” Mr Taylor also claimed that the people involved in the protest weren’t local to the area and wasted police and DEPI’s time. CHAG member Luke Pavia, who was present on the day, said all of the members present, with the exception of the two locked onto the gates, were local to Healesville, Chum Creek and its surrounds. Mr Pavia said he didn’t think it was disrespectful for the group to be at the site on the Black Saturday anniversary, and said the group was interested in returning to protest at the same site. The two protesters locked to gates were allegedly told by police that they would receive summons to court, to be charged, while another protester was charged for a previous offence.

Ms Marshall said she enjoyed her teaching and other community work, which includes volunteering at Mont De Lancey. “I enjoy watching the children develop as confident little learners and then seeing them move out, as many have, to achieve wonderful things in their lives,” she said.

Premier Tourist Resort HEALESVILLE stands alone as the premier tourist resort of Australia. Move around to other places and see how true this is. Why? The beautiful green of our hills and mountains cannot be found elsewhere. This is because Healesville is the prime watershed area of our glorious state. Even our near neighbours, Warburton and other towns in the ranges have not the glorious greens of Healesville. Healesville is also noted for its invigorating climate and the mildness of both its summers and winters. Rambling Around Healesville THE annual weekend trip to Healesville of the Richmond A.N.A Ramblers Cricket Club was made at the Foundation Day weekend, when 22

ramblers again visited this delightful resort. Their stay at the Grand Hotel was all too short. The manageress Miss Mears (more familiarly known as Aunty Kit) ably assisted by Archie Campbell treated the boys to a wonderful time. Credit was due to these two for their untiring attention, their excellent table (which is unsurpassed) and their sympathetic treatment to all. A word of praise would not be amiss in congratulating them on the cleanliness and the great improvements effected in the hotel surroundings. Warburton Mail February 14 1964 No changes in set-up of Yarra Valley Football League FOOTBALL in the Yarra Valley next season will be on much the same lines as last year. There are no prospects of any new teams and the retiring office bearers with one exception were re-elected for a further term of office. Clubs to compete in A Grade will be - Healesville, Warburton, Lilydale, Yarra Junction, Millgrove, Marysville and Woori Yallock. In B Grade Healesville will field one team only this year. Powelltown with possibly Warburton and Yarra Junction will make up the minor competition. - Contributed by Ellena Biggs

Use fire ratings to judge risk FIRE Danger Ratings are one of the best ways to understand the daily fire risk so you know how to respond to protect yourself and your family. Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley said Fire Danger Ratings tell you how bad a fire would be if one started. “As the ratings increase, so does your risk of fire,” he said, “This summer, you could be at risk of uncontrollable fires on Severe, Extreme and Code Red days. Talk to your household about where you’ll go on these days and when you’ll leave.” Fire Danger Ratings are based on the weather conditions and other factors, such as how much dry vegetation there is. Hot, dry, windy days are the worst weather conditions for fire.

Ratings are forecast using Bureau of Meteorology data up to four days in advance, and are declared by fire weather district. The three most important ratings to look out for are Severe, Extreme and Code Red. Code Red signals the worst conditions for a grass or bushfire and means that if a fire was to start, it would be uncontrollable. Most houses are not designed or constructed to withstand Code Red conditions. Leaving high-risk areas the night before a Code Red day or early in the day is the safest option. A rating of Severe or Extreme fire danger signals that if a fire starts and takes hold, it will be unpredictable and fast moving.

If you live in a high-risk area, and your house is not prepared and you are not able to defend it, leaving early in the day is your safest option. “Last summer, there were only four Extreme Fire Danger Ratings days and no Code Red days,” Mr Lapsley said. “These days are rare and serious, but fires can still start and run on days of Very High and Severe fire danger rating. “Don’t take any chances this summer - keep your family safe and check Fire Danger Ratings daily,” he said. Check Fire Danger Ratings at cfa.vic.gov.au, by downloading the FireReady smartphone app or by calling the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

Road blitz nabs 100 A FOUR-day blitz against dangerous drivers has resulted in more than 80 speeders being nabbed in the Yarra Ranges, with more than 100 offences recorded. Operation Amity was run over the Australia Day weekend by Victoria Police with a focus on high-risk areas of the state for road trauma and danger-

ous driving behaviour. Among the offences recorded in the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area (PSA) were 82 speeding offences. These included seven drivers travelling under 10 kilometres over the limit, 63 speeding between 10-25 kilometres over, and 12 travelling 25 over the limit.

Few drink-drivers were on the roads in the Yarra Ranges, with 677 preliminary breath-tests resulting in four drivers being caught drink-driving. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said that the drink-driving message was starting to get through to drivers. “In more than 88,000 breath-tests,

around 200 motorists were detected with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over the legal limit,” he said. “That’s an encouraging result that indicates that drink driving is becoming less socially acceptable over time.” Mr Hill said that communities should now focus on reducing speeding, which will be one of Victoria Po-

lice’s biggest focuses in 2014. In the Yarra Ranges, two drivers were also caught driving while disqualified during Operation Amity, with three people caught driving unlicensed and four people driving unregistered vehicles. One motorcycle was also impounded in the area.

School zone crack-down By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE police are set to crack down on illegal parking, bad behaviour and speeding in school zones in the coming weeks, with a “no apologies” stance to be taken. Healesville police Sergeant Stewart Thomson said that police had received numerous complaints about people parking incorrectly in school zones, particularly on View Street, near Healesville Primary School. He said that people would often park in ways that obscure intersections and stop school buses from getting through traffic. Another issue Sgt Thomson raised was people driving the wrong way down View Street, which is a one-way road. “We’re coming up with a solution, but in the meantime, we’ll be educating the parents,” Sgt Thomson said. He said that police would be enforcing any breaches of bylaws and traffic laws, and running a campaign to enforce the 40 kilo-

metre per hour speed limits around school zones. Between 8am-9.30am and 2.30pm-4pm, drivers must slow to 40 kilometres per hour in marked school zones. Healesville police will be patrolling schools on bicycles, in plain-clothes and in marked vehicles. “The local operation is to be going via primary schools and high schools, such as Chum Creek, Badger Creek, St Brigid’s and Healesville Primary School, and Healesville High School,” Sgt Thomson said. “We want people to get off to a safe start for the year and get people back into the system of the 40 kilometres per hour.” Sgt Thomson said police will be doing all they can to educate parents on how to behave in school zones and that police would not be swayed by apologies from drivers they intend to charge. For more information on school-zone speeds, visit www.vicroads.vic.gov.au.

Storytellers in demand By KATH GANNAWAY LITERACY is no laughing matter ... unless, of course, you’re Bookaburra the kookaburra! Larger than life, Bookaburra is an increasingly recognisable mascot championing early literacy skills in a fun way. The Bookaburra Storyteller Volunteer Project commenced in Yarra Ranges Council in 2011 as part of the Yarra Ranges Early Literacy Project. Along with the book reading and storytelling sessions at pre-

schools, playgroups and other places where young families gather, they love a “Bookaburra festival. Woori Yallock Primary School is hosting Bookaburra Twilight Storytime Festival on Tuesday, 25 February with lots of storytelling and free, fun activities for families from 5pm to 7.30pm. Activities include a bush band, face-painting, puppets, a clown, sausage sizzle and preschool showbags.

Enrol at Morrisons for a wide range of accredited short courses starting in February.

On course to learn MORRISONS in Mount Evelyn is currently taking enrolments for a wide range of accredited and short courses starting in February and March. Morrisons still has places available to enrol in certificates and diplomas in child care, education support, disability, hair care and massage. There are also many short courses available throughout February, March and April to enrol in. Morrisons offers short course qualifications in areas such as first aid, food safety handling, white card, RSA, barista and computers.

There is something for everyone looking to advance their skills or gain relevant qualifications to enhance employment opportunities. The great thing about looking at studying at Morrisons is that there is course information sessions held weekly so students are not just bound to being available for one open day. Morrisons run weekly information sessions for all certificate and diploma courses. The information sessions provide prospective students with all they need to know about the course they are looking into - from classwork and

assessment tasks to industry placement and enrolment details. It is a great forum for prospective students to meet the course co-ordinators and trainers and ask any questions they have about the course. These sessions enable prospective students to make an informed decision about undertaking the course that’s right for them and their future. Those who are interested in studying this year can phone 9736 1457 or visit www.morrisons.org.au to book into an information session.

When the need to sell your home is very important to you and you are unhappy with your current agent, phone Sandy Hall for prompt professional action. *(If your property is exclusively listed with another agent please disregard this communication)* Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to Sandy and her team for helping us through the sale of our home. We had our house on the market last year for over 8 months with two of the other agents with no success. When we decide to try to sell again this year, we were astounded that after only 3 days of being listed with Sandy, we SOLD! We could not have dreamt for a better result. Sandy was always there for any questions we had, any time, day or night. I would highly recommend Sandy Hall to anyone wanting to sell their home. Her no bull approach was so refreshing after dealing with other agents. Well done Sandy, and thanks again. - Stephanie Montgomery

Warburton Fun Run

A Mail Newspaper Advertising Feature

Up and running THIS year the Warburton Up and Running Fun Run festival will include a half marathon and is proving to be the most popular event on the program. The festival, being held on Sunday 23 February, has already exceeded all expectation from entries with spot filling up fast. Oscar’s on the Yarra has come on board in 2014 sponsoring the half marathon and offering luxury accommodation packages for the male/female winners of the half marathon. The sensational scenic half marathon course will follow the Yarra for most of the course, and includes a gentle off road climb up Big Pats Creek

Charnwood Cottages and the iconic Warburton Caravan Park continue their support with generous accommodation packages for the male/ female winners of the 10 kilometre and five kilometre fun runs. Prize money is also up for grabs for the winners and placegetters of each event as well as medals for age group winners. A new initiative this year is electronic timing provided by Tomato Timing, which will please the more competitive runners. The half marathon (21.5 kilometre) 10 kilometre and five kilometre runs, a five kilometre walk and a two kilometre kids’ dash is a genuine family event with something for everyone.

 Television, movies, music and more…

Tin man has feet of clay Robocop (M) Starring: Joel Kinnamon, Abbie Cornish, Samuel L. Jackson READY for another creepy, soulless re-make that’s totally unnecessary? Then you’re ready for Robocop. In fact, it’s the worst remake since the abysmal Total Recall effort. This film fails on so many levels, it almost erases the kitschy, sly original. Joel Kinnamon takes the lead role, in the worst miscasting since Harvey Keitel in the original Apocalypse Now shoot - speaking of disasters...

Arthouse Kinnamon, bestknown for his role in the American version of The Killing, tries to play cop Alex Murphy, horribly injured and rehabilitated in a crime-fighting hyperalloy combat chassis. The train first runs off the tracks when the Robocop repairers take away every part of Alex apart from his head, lungs and, bizarrely, his right hand. Future relations with Mrs Robocop (Abbie Cornish) are looking more than a little problematic. Perversely, in an attempt to further humanise Robocop, they’ve made him less human. Themes of humanity, indi-

viduality, conscience, consumer culture, American imperialism and moral killing are laid on with a trowel, with none of the sly subtlety of the original. A case in point is Samuel L. Jackson, in shouty mode as a TV shock jock - epic fail, as the young people say. The film does work as a crash, bang, wallop, special effects powerhouse, but beyond that, not so much. Watch particularly for the very enjoyable opening sequence on the streets of Tehran, with US robots pacifying an urban population, coming under attack from suicide bombers. - Jason Beck

Ms Brennan said families now have the confidence that something will be done if they approach a committee member and complain when a person or group is behaving badly. She said netball, which started in 2006, had enriched the club and had a moderating influence by transforming the club from a boys club to a family club. To be named as the Regional Good Sports Club of the Year recognised the work and commitment that everyone has put in to achieving those changes. “We can hold this up before our community and our players and say we can be proud of what we have achieved,” Mr Aulich said. Good Sports is supported in Victoria by VicHealth, Transport Accident Commission and the Department of Health. YARRA Junction Football Netball Club has been recognised as a club that is setting the pace in terms of the wellbeing of its players, members and spectators. The club was named 2013 Regional Good Sports Club of the Year, an accolade that recognised sports clubs around Australia that are providing safe and healthy places for families to enjoy sport. Presenting the award, Good Sports Outer East Region Project Officer Rick Wall said the club won the award because of its work its highly respected committee had undertaken in recent years to provide young people in the Upper Yarra with a safe and caring sporting and social environment. “Under president Tony Aulich and secretary Sally Brennan the club has progressed from a club facing an uncertain future to one which is setting benchmarks in the YMVDFNL competition and which has a strong record on the responsible service and con-

Like most football clubs, the sale of alcohol was one of the main income generators for the club making it reliant on bar sales to fund its operations. In turn, it lacked family memberships and was concerned about the future. One of the biggest changes for the club was educating members about club responsibilities in relation to servicing of alcohol. It then went the extra step of banning alcohol in the change rooms. At the same time the club formed its very first netball team to further solidify a much less ‘blokey’ culture. Mr Aulich said clubs now need to reflect community expectations and values. “Free grog, swearing and bad behaviour are not part of those community values,” he said. Providing food and drink at the end of each game before any alcohol is allowed has been a huge positive, along with a culture that doesn’t alienate players who chose not to drink alcohol.

WANDIN East Reserve rocked to life at Rock Berry Jam - the newest open air rock concert that featured headline acts including Ian Moss and Dragon. The all-star line-up that entertained the crown on Saturday 8 February also featured acts like The Choirboys, 1927, Skipping Girl Vinegar, The Flaming Moes and Inside Reality. Organiser of the event Lisa Glassborow said the event was absolutely amazing and better than she ever imagined. “The stage we built equalled that of A Day on the Green kind of rock concerts,” she said. “A lot of the bands said it was the most professional they had been to in a long time. “Our numbers weren’t as good as we were hoping for but next year we are hoping to crack 2000.” Ms Glassborow said the hot weather did not deter concert goers from having a good time, with a big fire hose spraying the crowd to keep them cool. “As the sun went down the entertainment heated up when Mossy came out,” she said. “When he came out he really was the pinnacle of the event. “We had everybody down the front near the stage and the set-up we had was really intimate and enabled everyone to feel really close to the band.” Ms Glassborow said the event was a dream that Silvan Football Club President Chris Maclagan had to run a rock concert in the Yarra Valley with some good old Aussie rock bands. “We are looking forward to next year’s event,” she said. “We will release our line-up in the middle of this year.”

Heat cancels senior games

Sash recipients Alan Guppy, Nick Kirley, David Ewert and Chuck Lay. 114048

Shooters give it both barrels THE Woods Point Gun Club’s first competition for 2014 was well attended and held under excellent conditions - sunny with a light breeze. The Eye Opener was shot straight after the club’s annual general meeting with Nick Kirley, Alan Guppy and Peter West becoming the first winners for 2014 by sharing the cash with perfect 30/30 scores. The first Championship for the year was the Hector Stewart 25 target Double Barrel sponsored by the Stewart Bus Company. Chuck Lay, David Ewert, Ken Skinner, Nick Kirley, Ian Findlay, Alan Guppy and Trevor Ewert all returned to the clubhouse with 25/25 to go into a shoot off for the sash. After a long and skilful shoot off, Nick Kirley wore

the first championship sash for 2014 with a final score of 80/80 and took the AA Grade prize as well. Skinner was second, 63/64. A Grade was well won by Alan Guppy, 60/60 and Trevor Ewert came second, 59/60. B Grade saw a good start to the year for Junior shooter David Ewert, 26/26 with Lay taking second spot at 25/26. Peter Lang was a surprise winner of C Grade, 24/25 with Matt Ewert a close second, 23/25. Next the club held the Jamieson 25 target Double Barrel Points Championship sponsored by Jamieson River Autos. Alan Guppy decided that as he was the sole representative from Jamieson he better put on a good show, and so he did. A great 73/75 saw him

take the championship sash outright - not bad for a shooter who had not fired a shot for six months. Phillip Desmond won AA Grade, 72/75, just beating Kirley, 71/75. A Grade was also a win for Guppy with Findlay second, 81/84, after a short shoot off with David Long. Lay’s 72/75 was enough for the B Grade win, David Ewert runner up, 69/75, while in C grade Peter Lang again came to the fore, 67/75 to Ron Press’s 66/75. The final event was the Gaffney’s Creek 20 target Handicap Championship sponsored by Robert and Linda Lay. By this time the brilliant sunshine had caused a lassitude among the shooters and only David Ewert and Matt Ewert managed a clean 20/20.

After a very short shoot off Matt won the sash, 22/22 with David coming in second 21/22. Lay’s 19/20 gave him third place outright while 10 shooters returned 18/20 to shoot off for the fourth place prize. Ron Press survived to take fourth place, 29/32. The overall High Gun for the day, sponsored by long time club member Peter Cornelius was won by a very surprised Chuck Lay, 116/120, his first ever High Gun Sash. An excellent lunch and afternoon tea was prepared by Ann Skinner and Cheryl Apps and it was a great start to 2014. The next shoot is the McMadmans Cup at McAdams Gap on Sunday 9 February followed by the Jack Scott Memorial shoot at Woods Point on Sunday 23 February.

EXTREME heat and threat of dangerous fire conditions forced the opening day of YVCA Round 12 action to cancel all senior cricket. The wellbeing of all competitors, especially the junior cricketers who often play two games of a Saturday, was put at a premium. With the cancellation of the first day, all games will revert to a oneday game next Saturday. In the association’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, the competition is coming to an exciting conclusion with only three rounds remaining. Healesville, Coldstream and Seville have all had fluctuating seasons, however, with plenty of depth with bat and ball in all lineups, they sit in the top three places on the ladder. This week’s clash between Seville and Coldstream may just give everyone a clear guide on which will be the team to chase in a month’s time. Mount Evelyn rounds out the top four and missed a golden opportunity last week to all but shut the gate on its challengers. Its loss to Yarra Junction has opened the door for Junction as it now sits only half a game off the pace and with arguably the best form of the competition it would take a brave man to back against it featuring in finals. Woori Yallock and WarburtonMillgrove needs to win its remaining games and hopes for some favourable results to feature in the finals. Both sides have recorded some memorable wins across the season, a lack of depth and consistency has cost them dearly. Rounding out the ladder is the hapless Hoddles Creek. The Wombats have generally been outclassed despite beating both Coldstream and Healesville - just missing the big scalp of Seville. Hoddles Creek will rue its inability to match it with those teams around it on the ladder when it mattered. While most cricketers in the Valley are either gearing themselves for finals or having a spirited dash at them, the association’s elite are gearing themselves up for the annual VCCL Country Week competition. This is being held across Melbourne between Monday 17 and Friday 21 February. The YVCA will be competing in Division Two after a fruitless 2013 campaign. Despite only recording one win in last year’s competition - the fact that this win was against eventual champions Bairnsdale has the squad confident of a strong showing this year. The Valley boys face local rival Ferntree Gully in the first round at Doncaster on Monday while they face Traralgon at Casey on Tuesday. Games against Warrnambool (Northcote) and Mornington (Frankston) round out what will be a challenging week for the team in its quest to gain a place in the competition’s premier division for the first time in many years. The squad selected to represent the YVCA for the VCCL Country Week tournament is: Kane Jones (Captain - Mount Evelyn), Brad Jones (Mount Evelyn), Daniel Lever (Yarra Junction), Quentin Hodgkinson (Yarra Junction), Ishara Amarasinghe (Seville), Dan-

iel Fraser (Mount Evelyn), Jesse Fraser (Mount Evelyn), Troy Murphy (Warburton-Millgrove), Jarrod Bayliss (Coldstream), Simon Young (Woori Yallock), Ryan Smith (Woori Yallock) and Luke Jones (Mount Evelyn). SENIOR GRADES All senior cricket cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.
