 Plea to save granddaughter’s life

A grandma’s love By MELISSA MEEHAN A FERNTREE Gully grandmother is pleading that the government place life-saving medication on the PBS to save her granddaughter’s life. Jenny Scott’s 17-year-old granddaughter Bianca suffers from a very rare, life-threatening condition called Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome or HUS, which means most of her time is spent in hospital on dialysis. Bianca, who lives in Queensland, can’t do things other teenagers do, and spends most of her time in bed. Jenny is no stranger to the illness; her son David died of it when he was just six years old. “Back then we didn’t know how to treat it,”Jenny said. “But now we know a drug called Soliris could save her life and end the need for daily dialysis. “She is my one and only granddaughter - we need to save her.” The snag is it costs $500,000 per year for each patient but until now it hasn’t been available in Australia at no cost to patients with HUS like Bianca. “I hope the Australian Government can help by providing the funds for this life-saving treatment.” She was diagnosed with the illness when she was a baby, and when five years old was told it was unlikely the disease would return, but sadly after finishing high school it came back. Without being on the PBS, the drug will cost Bianca’s parents Tammy and Bruce up to $18,000 a week for the first month, then $24,000 a fortnight indefinitely after that. Currently, Bianca’s treatment is invasive, and she needs to be in hospital for hours on end. “We have different information now than we did in 1978 when David died,” she said. “But when David had it, we weren’t told that stuff, it was too complicated.” Bianca feels sick, lethargic daily. She needs to measure everything that she drinks, her kidneys unable to manage the amount of water in her body.

and the Life Saving Drugs Program (LSDP). The drug company which owns Soliris has submitted an application for it to be subsidised under the PBS or LSDP for the treatment of HUS to the independent Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC). The next PBAC meeting is held next month. La Trobe MP Jason Wood is work-

ing hard to lobby the drug company to give Bianca access to Soliris on compassionate grounds. “Last week we got a phone call from Jenny saying she needed our help,” Mr Wood said. “It’s a sad story; Jenny lost her son many years ago and now her granddaughter is facing a similar fight.” Mr Wood said while there was a chance the PBAC meeting could come

HE IS a special little boy, and his battle ahead has captured the hearts of many. Upwey’s Joshua Schwarz has a rare form of cancer which, doctors say, is inoperable and he only has months to live. On Sunday 16 February the community is invited to come together again to show their support for Joshua and his family. Dane Howe from the Upwey and Tecoma Football and Cricket Clubs said each year the clubs worked together on a community-based initiative.

“Last year, it was fund-raising for the local CFA, this year we’ve decided to do what we can for Joshua and his family,” Mr Howe said. “One of our players mums used to be Joshua’s kindergarten teacher, so that’s how it all started. “The family aren’t members of our club, but they are Upwey people.” Mr Howe said he and other members of the club met with Joshua’s mum Penne, and decided to run a fund-raising day at the club this weekend. “The plan is to open the doors and see what we can do

Roadside ambush probed By MELISSA MEEHAN A WOMAN named Meredith could hold the missing piece to the puzzle regarding a violent attack in Yellingbo last week. The attack has left a 51-yearold Warburton man in a serious condition in hospital in what police describe as “in a pretty bad way”. Lilydale CIU Detective Sargent Allan Price said “Meredith” could answer a number of questions concerning what eventuated, because the victim was not yet able to speak with police. It is believed the man drove to Macclesfield Road when his female housemate called saying her car had broken down and she needed his assistance. “While she was waiting, we believe she went to the toilet in the bushes and heard yelling

and screaming,” Det Sgt Price said. “Scared for her own safety she then fled, and was able to get a lift (with Meredith) to the Belgrave Police Station to report what had happened.” He said that the man was assaulted with what is believed to be a large iron bar, and that his attackers left the scene in the car. “It’s a rural road, but would have been pretty busy given the time of day,” Det Sgt Price said. Witnesses have told the Mail and police they saw a man in his twenties beating something into a drain with an iron bar, not realising he was attacking a person. When the man stopped the attack, he and three others - another man and two women - got back into a car and drove off. As the group left, witnesses

realised that there was a man injured in the gutter, with serious head wounds so they called police and an ambulance. “He had some serious head wounds, and was conscious but incoherent,” Monbulk’s Leading Senior Constable Glenn Barkaway, who attended the scene, said. The victim has fractured skull as a result of the attack. He remains in hospital at The Alfred. The woman known as Meredith is believed to be driving a beige-coloured Ford Territory. Police are also searching for the stolen blue Ford sedan, registration UQG 947. Investigators urge anyone with information about the incident or whereabouts of the blue Ford sedan to come forward or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

HAWTHORN Football Club has joined forces with the Upper Ferntree Gully CFA to warn visitors to the 1000 Steps to take care this summer. CFA Community Education Coordinator Matt Ahern said the brigade had been working with Hawthorn to push safety awareness in the Dandenong Ranges. “We have roughly 70,000 visitors to the steps a month,” Mr Ahern said. “Many of these people are unaware of the fact they are in one of the most at risk fire areas in the world.” Mr Ahern said it was important for the greater community to avoid the steps on days of Total Fire Ban and Code Red. “People need to rethink where they are going to exercise,” he said. “They could go to the beach instead.” He said the fire danger was not the only reason people should avoid the steps during summer. “The heat affects people differently, and those who are not physically conditioned for the environment can collapse,” he said. “This holds up fire-fighting resources as it takes 8-10 emergency services personnel to provide assistance to one person who is unwell up there. “So on days over 32 degrees, we are asking people to avoid the steps.”

Making a noise about aircraft THANK you to Matthew Parker and his letter to this paper regarding passenger jet flight noise over the Dandenong Ranges (Jet Upset, Mail 16 January). Matthew recently contacted my office regarding this matter and expressed his concerns. I subsequently contacted the office of the Hon Warren Truss Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development regarding aircraft flight paths and noise. I have been advised that in the first instance contact should be made with the Airservices’ Noise Complaint and Information Service (NCIS). Solution in can IN the Mail readers were hit with propaganda from Stan Moore (Home Recycling Pickup Under Threat, Mail 21 January) suggesting the kerbside recycling systems of Cardinia and Yarra Ranges Councils were under threat from the proposed container deposit system. This scare campaign shows how desperate industry is to block this much needed litter reform. South Australia has had a container deposit system since the mid 1970s. They also have kerbside recycling which proves that the two systems are compatible and actually complement one another. The South Australian container deposit system has a public approval rating of more than 80 per cent. If it did undermine kerbside recycling it would not be so popular with the public in

South Australia. This popularity comes from the fact that people know it works. Cans and bottles are not a litter problem in South Australia. Secondly, people in South Australia like their container deposit system because every year community groups raise millions of dollars from cans and bottles. In opposing a container deposit system the beverage industry is being reckless and irresponsible. Currently 8 billion drink containers are not recycled in Australia every year. Many of these become litter. A container deposit system will fix this problem but this solution might not be seen outside South Australia and the Northern Territory if industry has its way. We must hope that the Victorian Premier, who is a supporter of container deposits, stands firm and ignores these inaccurate and self serving arguments. WANDIN East Reserve rocked to life at Rock Berry Jam - the newest open air rock concert that featured headline acts including Ian Moss and Dragon. The all-star line-up that entertained the crown on Saturday 8 February also featured acts like The Choirboys, 1927, Skipping Girl Vinegar, The Flaming Moes and Inside Reality. Organiser of the event Lisa Glassborow said the event was absolutely amazing and better than she ever imagined. “The stage we built equalled that of A Day on the Green kind of rock concerts,” she said. “A lot of the bands said it was the most professional they had been to in a long time. “Our numbers weren’t as good as we were hoping for but next year we are hoping to crack 2000.” Ms Glassborow said the hot weather did not deter concert goers from having a good time, with a big fire hose spraying the crowd to keep them cool. “As the sun went down the entertainment heated up when Mossy came out,” she said. “When he came out he really was the pinnacle of the event. “We had everybody down the front near the stage and the set-up we had was really intimate and enabled everyone to feel really close to the band.”

Coveted role of Speaker for Fyffe as Smith falls By MELISSA MEEHAN CONSTITUENTS of the Evelyn electorate will still be represented in the party room despite MP Christine Fyffe being elected unopposed as the 36th Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Ms Fyffe’s new position came as no surprise, as current Speaker Ken Smith stepped down on Tuesday. While Ms Fyffe gives up her vote in Parliament, she will still be able to talk about local issues in the party room, and work with other politicians in the area to get her views across.

Ms Fyffe thanked the House for expressing their confidence in her as she takes on the new role. “I am humbled to take on the role of Speaker,” Mrs Fyffe said. “I do not take this task on lightly. I acknowledge it will be a challenge to steer a finely-balanced Parliament. “The Speaker is a servant of the Parliament, whose priority is the protection of the rights of members and to ensure the smooth running of the House. “I see the role of speaker is to apply the Standing Orders that are

set by the Parliament itself. Being Speaker is very much akin to the role of an umpire. “For me, Australia has truly been the lucky country. I was fortunate that Australia accepted me as an immigrant who arrived with very little and later granted me citizenship. I met my husband David, raised a family together and we owned our own business. “The voters of Evelyn have put their confidence in me at three elections, and now I have been given the great honour of being elected Speaker.”

Ms Fyffe brings 10 years of parliamentary experience to the role, including the past three years as Deputy Speaker. Ms Fyffe was first elected to the Legislative Assembly as the member for Evelyn in 1999 and was subsequently re-elected in 2006 and 2010. Ms Fyffe is married to David and has five adult children. Before entering politics, Ms Fyffe was a Commissioner of the Shire of Yarra Ranges during its amalgamation. Prior to this, she and David owned and operated a Yarra Valley winery and restaurant.

Reward to find Bung’s killer A ONE million dollar reward has been announced for information about the disappearance of 13-yearold Boronia girl Siriyakorn ‘Bung’ Siriboon. Bung left her home in Elsie Street, Boronia around 8.30am on Thursday 2 June 2011. She was seen by a neighbour a short time later in Elsie Street, walking towards Albert Avenue. Bung did not arrive at school that day and has not been seen or heard from since. Investigators continue to hold grave fears for her safety. Homicide Squad Detective Inspector John Potter said he was hopeful that the announcement of the reward would encourage someone who knew what happened to Bung to share the information with police. “One million dollars is a life changing amount of money,” Det Insp Potter said. “Taskforce Puma and Homicide

Squad detectives have investigated more than 1200 pieces of information since Bung went missing but we’re still missing that crucial piece that will provide some answers about what happened to her. “We are not going to solve this on our own, we need the community’s help - if you have any information about what may have happened to Bung on that morning in June 2011 and have not previously contacted us, please do so,” he said. At the time of her disappearance Bung was wearing her blue and white school uniform and carrying a school backpack. The backpack has never been recovered. Monash’s citizen soldiers recalled By KATH GANNAWAY THE first of two story boards marking 100 years since then Colonel John Monash marched 3000 citizen soldiers into Lilydale was erected at Lillydale Lake on Sunday. A militia camp was set up in the basin that is largely now Lillydale Lake as part of compulsory civilian military training for boys and young men between 12 and 26. The combat training including battalion drills, musketry practice and a mock battle at Mount Mary near Coldstream which was aimed at training them to defend a developing Australia, should the need arise. The troops arrived at Lilydale by train and were marched through the town to set up camp in conditions very much like those experienced by the people standing on the hilltop at Lillydale Lake on Sunday - extreme

heat and blustery winds with fires burning to the east. Brigadier (retired) Michael Phelps AM welcomed guests, members of the organising committee and members of the public, some of whom had connections going back to those who attended the camp. Former Victorian Premier and chairman of the Victorian Anzac Centenary Committee Ted Baillieu, local historian and author of Monash’s Militia Camp Anthony McAleer, Casey MP Tony Smith and the great-grandson of Sir John Monash, Michael Bennett, each spoke of the event recognising it as an important part of both the district’s military history and an important and fascinating window into Australia’s pre-World War I history. Mr Baillieu set the scene of the militia camp against the larger back-

drop of the increasingly threatening situation in Europe saying Victoria was a peaceful and prosperous place at the time. “The citizen soldiers, aged from 12 to 26 were no different form our cadets here today, and there were 3000 of them,” he said acknowledging the young Australian Air Force cadets who along with the Australian Great War Association formed the guard of honour. Mount Evelyn RSL president Roger Boness said the history boards, the second of which will be launched at Coldstream on Thursday, and launch of the RSL’s second history book was an important part of the RSL’s role in preserving and recording local military heritage. Baked golfers day out By DENNIS FULLER WITH the big shiny doing its best to deter golfers at Emerald Golf Club, a group of hard souls hit the course. For the first round of the three round summer, Ken Sumsion (28) decided that a day in the sun was worth a good round. A magnificent +6 to put him right at the top of the leaders’ board and a strong winner in B Grade. A Grade was won by Graeme White (13) with +2 and seems to be playing better each week lately so could scare the pants off the leader. Down the line in the run for the Summer Cup are Con Whitlock (17) and Allan Ecclestone (19) on +4 with Ian Scott (31) and Peter Clowes (17) all on +2 and not far off the pace. Broc Reynolds was nearest the pin on the fourth, Peter Glasscock on the seveth and the 13th, Whitlock on the 13th and the pro pin went to Greg Horrocks who let go a magnificent shot in difficult circumstances and nearly aced it. The day also belonged to Con Whitlock who aced the 12th which is his second ace in a few months. Allan Ecclestone was not to be outshone completely when he eagled the ninth hole from approxiamately 150 metres. He was heard to claim 180 metres but that would mean he played at least one very average shot before this to be that far out after two. There are joint leaders in the ladies’ Summer Cup when the powers that be could not split Kendra Hill and Deanne Shannon. It will be interesting to see which can rise like cream to the top in the next two rounds. On Wednesday, when the Old and Flailing Golfers rolled up for a stroke round, it was Sepp Krummenacher (28) who kicked the living daylights out of the course and the opposition with a nett score of 56. That is 14 better than his handicap. Ian Scott had 61 while Ben Balfour and Mick Petrie both had 62 which were scores that are usually good enough to win. The second week of the summer round is to be played next week and the members are hoping for more friendly conditions in the fight to run down the current leader.

Little athletes record strong results in sun WARM weather reduced numbers again at the latest round of Yarra Ranges Athletics Little Athletics. But the weather did not affect performances with more outstanding results from athletes highlighted by a club record to Tess Patterson in the Under 13 Girls 800 metres. The club is lucky with a strong quartet of middle distance girls. Georgia Laven (Under 11), Lily Peacock (Under 12), Tess Patterson (Under 13) and Molly Dixon (Under 15) have broken most of 400 metre, 800 metre and 1500 metre club age group records. The AV Shield completion was cancelled because of the extreme weather enabling the athletes another week of training before AV Junior Championships next weekend. Results from Day Two of the State Multi Event championships held in Bendigo last weekend are: Chelsea Thompson (Under 12 Girls) 10th, Harrison Van Duuren (Under 12 Boys) 13th, Jayden Clarke (Under 12 Boys ) 33rd, Rickylee Brown (Under 13 Girls) 20th, Lee Taylor (Under 13 Girls) 29th, James Laven (Under 14 Boys ) 12th. Small wonder Falcons won By STEVE BROWN THIS week in FTGDCA, former Northcote batsman Shannon Small used all of his premier experience in trying conditions to secure a Knox Gardens victory. The team’s win was by seven wickets over last season’s finalist Upper Ferntree Gully. The Falcons were 1/13 overnight, chasing 150 before losing Rhys Marget early in the day to give the Kings a chance at 2/29 with the winner keeping its finals hopes alive. Small, who opened the innings, displayed tremendous concentration, placing a high price on his wicket and ended the match with an unbeaten 65 in four and a half hours at the crease. Nav Singh joined Small at the fall of Marget’s wicket and he played his best innings at this level with a gritty 49, the pair adding 107.

A weary Small said after the game that it was probably the best attack he’s faced this season and they did not have a weak link. “I’ve batted for 80 overs a couple of times but today wasn’t too bad out there,” he said. Ferntree Gully’s paceman Jarrod Bradley produced a top spell at Monbulk securing a win for the Blues and, more importantly, a chance for finals action. Bradley’s 7/15 was too good for the Hawks who were bundled out for just 124 winning by 99 runs in conditions more suitable for the batsmen. Star out of retirement Jason Fraser top scored with 48 to add to his seven wickets last week and Tom Watson produced 35. It appears that only the top five can make the finals and the Blues are sitting fifth on percentage just behind

Heat cancels senior games EXTREME heat and threat of dangerous fire conditions forced the opening day of YVCA Round 12 action to cancel all senior cricket. The wellbeing of all competitors, especially the junior cricketers who often play two games of a Saturday, was put at a premium. With the cancellation of the first day, all games will revert to a oneday game next Saturday. In the association’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, the competition is coming to an exciting conclusion with only three rounds remaining. Healesville, Coldstream and Seville have all had fluctuating seasons, however, with plenty of depth with bat and ball in all line-ups, they sit in the top three places on the ladder. This week’s clash between Seville and Coldstream may just give everyone a clear guide on which will be the team to chase in a month’s time. Mount Evelyn rounds out the top four and missed a golden opportunity last week to all but shut the gate on its challengers. Its loss to Yarra Junction has opened the door for Junction as it now sits only half a game off the pace and with arguably the best form of the competition it would take a brave man to back against it featuring in finals. Woori Yallock and WarburtonMillgrove needs to win its remaining games and hopes for some favourable results to feature in the finals. Both sides have recorded some memorable wins across the season, a lack of depth and consistency has cost them dearly. Rounding out the ladder is the hapless Hoddles Creek. The Wombats have generally been outclassed despite beating both Coldstream and Healesville - just missing the big scalp of Seville. Hoddles Creek will rue its inability to match it with those teams around it on the ladder when it mattered. While most cricketers in the Valley are either gearing themselves for finals or having a spirited dash at them, the association’s elite are gearing themselves up for the annual

VCCL Country Week competition. This is being held across Melbourne between Monday 17 and Friday 21 February. The YVCA will be competing in Division Two after a fruitless 2013 campaign. Despite only recording one win in last year’s competition - the fact that this win was against eventual champions Bairnsdale has the squad confident of a strong showing this year. The Valley boys face local rival Ferntree Gully in the first round at Doncaster on Monday while they face Traralgon at Casey on Tuesday. Games against Warrnambool (Northcote) and Mornington (Frankston) round out what will be a challenging week for the team in its quest to gain a place in the competition’s premier division for the first time in many years. Cool win for Frosty By KATH GANNAWAY FROSTY Jay Jay came home in spectacular fashion on Sunday to take out the Group 2 Lion Quality Healesville Cup final which has a $72,500 prize pool. The Pearcedale trained dog ran down stablemate Paw Licking in the shadows of the finishing post claiming the Healesville Cup, $43,750 first-place prize money and a track record with 18.81 seconds. Jason Thompson’s Zulu Zircon navigated his way through the field to finish third. Trainer Kelvyn Greenough said the win was a great team effort. Greenough thanked his family for their efforts in helping to train the greyhound and paid tribute to a recently passed kennel star. “This is a tremendous result for us and it is the result of a lot of hard work,” he said. “I am so grateful to my family for

all they do with the greyhounds; it’s a real team effort.” He dedicated the win to Dolores Ruth and her greyhound Razldazl Bonnie who he said was tragically lost recently in difficult circumstances. The cup was presented to Greenough and his daughter Angela Jackson by MP Craig Ondarchi. Healesville Greyhound Club manager Lee Fahry said the day was a great Cup Day success despite numbers being impacted by the heat. The meeting was brought forward to accommodate the hot and windy conditions predicted for the day, but Ms Fahry said the Cup race was run as a welcome cool change came over the track, making it more pleasant not only for the stars of the show but for patrons who had braved the conditions to attend the meeting. Healesville Greyhound Club holds race meetings every Sunday at the Don Road track.

A PAIR of former AFL superstar forwards will line up in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League this season, with two-time Coleman medallist Brendan Fevola and former Melbourne high-flyer Russell Robertson set to draw big crowds through the gates. Fevola made a one-off appearance for Division 1 side Monbulk last season, booting six goals in a starring role in the Hawks’ five-point upset win over eventual grand-finalists, Upwey Tecoma. He’ll be looking to have the same pinch-hitting impact when he laces up the boots for Division 2 outfit Kinglake on Anzac Day this season, when the Lakers host Yarra Glen. Robertson, one of the most spectacular aerialists in AFL history, is on track to play for Monbulk against Warburton Millgrove in round one this season and is also likely to make a host of other appearances for the Hawks throughout 2014. The man affectionately known as ‘Robbo’ played over 220 games for Melbourne after making his debut in 1997 and was a long-time team mate of current Monbulk player-coach Daniel Ward. Robertson played nine games for the Burnie Dockers in the Tasmanian State League last season, slotting 24 majors. His inclusion for the Hawks this season could make all the difference for a side trying to secure a top-three berth in a brutal YVMDFL first division.
