the routine for many students - and with many autistic pupils, keeping to a routine is important.” The trampoline was installed at the school during 2012, after volunteers from the school’s fundraising sub-committee helped raise money for an equipment upgrade. Medical studies have shown trampolines can help regulate the sensory skills of special needs children, which in turn assists them to concentrate in class. “It’s a crucial part of their day-today learning,” Ms Mallia said. Ms Hayes said the trampoline vandals “just don’t realise the signifi-
cance of their destruction”. “It’s really sad, whoever did it would know we’re a special school,” Ms Mallia said. “I would say to them why would you do this to kids who really don’t have a voice and can’t always stand up for themselves?” The vandals also broke into the school’s bicycle shed and stole bike tubes. The crime has been reported to police. Anyone who can help the school with a donation towards replacing the trampoline can contact Ms Mallia by calling 9311 4804.

PUPILS at the Sunshine Special Developmental School have been left devastated after heartless vandals destroyed their beloved trampoline. Acting principal Rosie Hayes said staff arrived on 3 February to discover the trampoline had been wrecked by unknown intruders. The school council’s president, Anne Mallia, said the sight of the slashed trampoline material has been upsetting for pupils. To make matters worse, the school will now have to find $1155 to replace
and install a new trampoline mat. “We will have to hold a couple of fund-raising events to find the funds for that and in the meantime the kids are really distressed,” Ms Mallia said. Ms Hayes said even after the trampoline was ruined, students have been lining up hoping to use it. “Probably one of the most critical aspects is that the trampoline is not just for their play time or leisure - it helps with the learning process for children in the autism spectrum,” Ms Hayes said. “It is also embedded in the learning system and it’s a very important part of

By ALESHA CAPONE BUSINESSES in City Place have slammed a decision to permanently shut the Sunshine train station underpass, as they experience a drop in patronage due to decreased access to the shopping area. A worried resident, Nicholas, said the Regional Rail Link Authority (RRLA) shut the underpass on 2 January. Nicholas said elderly and disabled pedestrians were now forced to struggle up the railway station’s steep staircases or navigate ramps which are “much longer” than the underpass. Nicholas said it made no sense to close the underpass before the station’s new lifts began operating in April. Last week, Star spoke to City Place traders, who said the underpass closure had impacted significantly upon them.
One business owner estimated she has experienced a 70 per cent downturn in customers since the subway shut. “It feels like we are going to have another Nicholson St here,” she said. Late last year, traders in Footscray’s Nicholson St reported a large drop in business after RRLA works closed a bridge and forced pedestrians to detour. Another City Place trader said the Sunshine underpass closure has had a “big impact” on his business and the RRLA did not consult on the issue. “The underpass provided more of a direct link before, but now the new train station is like a new wall,” a third trader said. One shop owner, who has been in operation for more than 40 years said, since the underpass closed business had become “the worst it has ever been”.
The business owner has also been angered by a plan to install an electrical substation, to increase the power supply to trains, in the laneway behind Pap’s Market. The Public Transport Victoria (PTV) project will see nine parking spots permanently closed. “It would be nice if they would put it in a practical position, instead of putting it in a prime car-parking area,” the business owners said. A PTV spokesperson said the substation would be located on vacant rail land used for commuter parking, although the spot is not a designated car park, which would not require a planning permit. “PTV is, however, liaising with Brimbank City Council to ensure adequate access is provided for both local businesses and train station users during construction,” the spokesperson said.

The Yarraville puppeteer and performer has been based at Brimbank City Council’s Sunshine Art Spaces for the past 12 months. Her show ‘Love Monster’, directed by Claire Hooper from ‘Good News Week’, will be on at The Imperial Hotel in Melbourne. Ms Schwarcz said although she had stayed away from using personal relationships for comic material in the past, she will reveal some “deeply personal” stories as part of the concert program. “It is about love and, unfortunately, I feel sorry for all my ex-boyfriends because they do get a bit of an airing during the show,” she said. “It’s about being single for years and coming to love that, but also my relationship to love.” As part of her preparation for the show, Ms Schwarcz set up a profile on dating website where she wrote: “I am doing a show about being single, you should see it to find out if you want to date me.” She hopes potential partners will attend her comedy show and message her afterwards if

Child run over in driveway dies By ALESHA CAPONE A YOUNG child died after she was run over in a driveway in Sunshine West last Tuesday. The three-year-old girl was seriously injured and sustained head injuries after she was hit by a car driven by a relative, in Armour St. The girl was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital by ambulance in a critical condition, but later passed away. Police have investigated the incident and interviewed the driver, but last week said they expected not to lay any charges. Last year, the Coroner’s Court conducted an inquest into the death of a Hillside boy who died after being hit by a car in his home’s driveway. The Coroner’s Prevention Unit said between January 2000 and September 2012, 14 children in Victoria suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a vehicle in a driveway, seven of whom died. In the same period, 73 children were admitted to the Royal Children’s Hospital with non-fatal injuries after being involved in driveway accidents. In 2010, the State Government launched an awareness campaign to raise awareness of driveway safety around small children.
$40,000 penalty for offensive odours AN ALTONA North business has been ordered to pay more than $40,000 by the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to an air pollution charge and breach of licence. The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) took Hyde Park Tank Depot Pty Ltd to court after the company let gas into the atmosphere, causing “glue-like odours” to permeate the air as far away as Sunshine. On 7 February 2012, the business discharged chemical vapours - known as ethyl acrylate while washing an ISO transport container. The company was also fined $25,000 back in 2012 for the same offence. A statement from the EPA said during the latest case, the “offensive odour” forced some residents of the West to stay indoors or leave the area to avoid the smell. “Residents also complained of various physical symptoms as a result of being exposed to the ethyl acrylate vapours,” the statement said. Chemical experts provided the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court with reports on the potentially harmful effects of ethyl acrylate. Ethyl acrylate is rated as possibly carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Since the incident, Hyde Park’s Altona North branch has stopped handling and washing bulk ISO containers containing ethyl acrylate. No conviction has been recorded, but the company will be subject to a 12-month good behaviour bond. The company has been ordered to pay $40,000 to Western Melbourne Catchments Network Incorporated to manage and co-ordinate the funding of a seed production along Kororoit Creek and the Federation Trail at Altona. Hyde Park was also ordered to pay EPA’s costs of more than $13,825 during the court case.

Two men arrested after daylight robbery By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK police have arrested two men after a woman was robbed in a St Albans street in broad daylight on Sunday 2 February. The robbery happened as the victim, a 45-year old lady, was walking along the footpath in Victoria Crescent doing her shopping around 1.30pm. Acting Detective Sergeant Matt
Illingworth, from the Brimbank Embona squad, said a silver car pulled up alongside the woman and a male ran out of the vehicle. He proceeded to “jump on” the woman and steal her purse which contained cash. Acting Sgt Illingworth said the woman’s knees and legs were injured during the scuffle and after being dragged along the ground for a short distance.
The Brimbank Embona unit, which responded to the triple-zero callout and conducted the investigation, arrested two men on Tuesday last week. One man, a 27-year-old Kings Park resident, has been charged and remanded in custody after police executed a search warrant at his home and seized evidence. His co-accused, a 35-year-old male from Melton, was arrested in
Broadmeadows on the same day. The Melton resident was allegedly driving the silver car when the robbery occurred. He was taken to the Sunshine police station and interviewed, charged and bailed in relation to the case. Acting Sgt Illingworth praised his officers for achieving a “quick result” when investigating the robbery.

Drugs crackdown By ALESHA CAPONE POLICE turned out in force to conduct a drugs operation, the first of its kind, in St Albans last Wednesday. Around 14 police officers and two PAD (Passive Alert Detection) dogs assembled in Alfrieda St and the surrounding areas for Operation Disburses. Sergeant Murray Trudel, from the Brimbank Safer Communities Taskforce, said police processed three people for possessing drugs during the four-hour operation. “Two were dealt with by way of
caution and one man was charged and bailed for possessing amphetamines,” he said. Another suspect was found to be carrying heroin and the third was detected with prescription drugs. “We’re talking small amounts,” Sgt Trudel said. “It was a successful operation, and we gathered quite a bit of intelligence as well from talking to people on the day.” He said the event was the first time police have conducted this type of drugs operation within St Albans.
“It has been identified as an area of high-drug activity, so we put the operation together and we had a good result,” Sgt Trudel said. “Based on the success of the operation, I definitely think we would possibly follow that up with other operations in other areas of Brimbank in the future.” In August last year, Star revealed a report has called for the West to get improved access to syringes, drug services and a supervised injecting facility. The HealthWest Partnership
study said demand for syringes had grown by almost 200 per cent in Brimbank across the past decade. The report also reccommended that the service, which offers afterhours access to needles, should be extended to Deer Park and St Albans. Presently, the North West Mobile Outreach Service only covers the Maribyrnong municipality and a small part of Brimbank. Anyone with information about drug activity can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

■ More than 900 vehicles stolen across Brimbank
City drives car thefts By ALESHA CAPONE
Brimbank across 12 months. “This is mirrored by our local data,” Insp Gilbert said. “We’ve done a lot of work to bring these numbers down, a trend across the whole state. “The national reduction sits at -4.9 per cent over the previous year, ours is more than double that. “Our raw theft rates are reflective of a large city of almost 200,000 but the rate per 1000 residents is lower than the national average.” Insp Gilbert said many car thefts committed in Brimbank remained preventable through simple measures such as parking off-street and simply locking cars. “After-market devices such as steering locks are cheap but very effective,” he said. Insp Gilbert said Brimbank police officers have been working hard to reduce vehicle theft. “The enforcement work has been terrific to reduce thefts and we are looking to capitalise on this through greater education around prevention,” he said. “This is complemented by the focus on preventing number plate theft.”

BRIMBANK has been ranked as the number one municipality for car theft within Victoria, according to newly released statistics. Last week, the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) released its annual report. The document revealed in 2012/13, 900 vehicles were reported as stolen within Brimbank. On a national level, Brimbank ranked as the seventh-highest municipality for car theft across Australia. Brisbane topped the charts with more than 2020 vehicles stolen. More than 550 of the vehicles stolen in Brimbank in 2012/13 were classified as ‘short-term’ thefts, meaning they were broken into for purposes such as joy-riding or providing transport to commit other crimes. The number of short-term car thefts lodged in Brimbank during 2011/12 was more than 650. Brimbank’s police Inspector Chris Gilbert said although the rate of vehicle thefts in the area was high, the NMVTRC report showed police have been successful in reducing the number of cars stolen in
A TEENAGER from Cairnlea has been accepted into a prestigious training program which will equip her for a future serving Australia as a Navy officer. Seventeen-year-old Fiona Nguyen is among a number of Victorian high school graduates who have travelled to Canberra for a three-year military and leadership program at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA). She will also complete a year of Navy officer training before commencing a Weapons Electrical Engineering Aircraft degree at the University of New South Wales. Fiona underwent a long course of psychological and medical tests, interviews and group activities as part of the ADFA selection process. Fiona said receiving the ADFA offer afterwards was a great “morale booster” before beginning her Year 12 exams at Sydenham’s Catholic Regional College in 2013. The young midshipman - as she is now known - said she had many reasons for wanting to join the defence force, after hearing tales from relatives in the US Navy and Vietnamese defence force. “I’ve heard a lot of stories about the fantastic travel but also about the responsibility which comes with being a Navy officer,” she said. “I’m also looking forward to being part of a huge team which is really like a family here in the Navy.” Fiona said the personality traits required by the Navy, such as loyalty, trust, integrity and respect, have also inspired her to join its ranks.

Painting pictures of the West By ALESHA CAPONE THE Western Suburbs continue to inspire Paul Borg in creating acclaimed works of art. A painting by the St Albans artist has been selected for the finals of the Rick Amor Drawing Prize 2014 at The Art Gallery of Ballarat. Titled ‘Super Jesus in the plaza carpark’, Mr Borg said the piece was based on a scene he glimpsed at the Brimbank Shopping Centre. “I was going back to the car park when I saw a man pushing a trolley with a statue of Jesus in it,” he said. The surreal image stayed in Mr Borg’s mind for some days and he went on to create the art-
work from his memory. Mr Borg said he had been delighted to make the finals of the Rick Amor competition, which was won by his student Gina Kalabishis. However, the Ballarat gallery has asked to purchase Mr Borg’s painting for its collection. Out of the many images Mr Borg has created during his artistic career, among his favourites is a painting of the landscape as viewed from the freeway travelling to Bacchus Marsh. “Watching the Western Suburbs change and evolve is important to me,” Mr Borg said. “I grew up here and I re-
member when it was all paddocks.” Mr Borg said he enjoyed painting in the styles of landscape, portraits and still-life. “What I really like is how people react to it and how they get something out of it,” he said of his artwork. After teaching for 28 years, Mr Borg said he hoped to set up his own art school in the future. Creativity seems to run in the family - Mr Borg’s teenage daughter is following in her father’s footsteps. “She’s very artistic and she wants to be an art teacher,” the proud father said. He received stitches for wounds and lacerations sustained on his head and back. Det Sen Const Boyle said

er,” Mr Charman said. “Perhaps you’re looking for advice on growing a certain plant and you can come to hear a guest speaker talk about it, then become interested and learn more.” Mrs Charman said the club’s meetings featured a friendly atmosphere, raffle, supper and a show bench for garden items, such as vegetable or flowers, with the best receiving a prize. Mrs Charman said she was interested in flower arranging, floral art and ferns, while her husband enjoys his vegie patch - just like his own father did. “When I was growing up and World War II was on, my father had a marvellous vegetable patch on top
of our air-raid shelter,” Mr Charman said. “Dorothy, she’s the gardener, she has the ideas,” he said. “Ken carries things about for me,” Mrs Charman said. The grandmother-of-four is also a volunteer in the palliative care ward at Sunshine Hospital, where she can often be seen tending to the bouquets. “I never throw a flower away if I can keep it,” she said. The 93rd Annual Autumn Show will be on 15 March from 11am to 4pm at the Glengala Community Hall, corner Simmie St and Glengala Rd, Sunshine West. Free admission. Visitors welcome, afternoon tea for a gold coin donation. Inquiries: Chris on 0418 543 649.

CRIME STOPPERS has appealed for public help to solve two crimes which occurred last year in Brimbank including an armed robbery in Kealba on 6 December. Two men armed with an axe and spear gun allegedly robbed a service station in Sunshine Ave about 4.20am. They forced an employee into an office and stole a large quantity of cigarettes and cash from the till. The first man was described as Caucasian in appearance, about 175cm tall, aged 20 to 25 years old and wearing a brown hoodie with grey track pants. The second man is described as Caucasian in appearance, about 180cm tall, with a thin build and wearing dark clothing and a balaclava. In a separate case, police are investigating the theft of a Harley Davidson motorbike worth tens of thousands of dollars from an East Keilor property on 21 November. The blue and red custom-built bike was removed from the locked garage of a Sterling Drive house, pushed onto grassland parallel to Keilor Park Drive and placed onto a ute or trailer.

A touch of teal Tourism fest for the West for your nails By CHARLENE MACAULAY
By YASEMIN TALAT TEAL will be the hot new nail polish colour of the season with ladies across the Western Suburbs encouraged to get their nails ‘coloured for a cause’. Australians are being invited to paint their nails in the colour to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer this month. Chemmart Pharmacy and Ovarian Cancer Australia have joined forces for Ovarian Cancer Awareness month (February), with special limited edition teal nail polish packs being sold in selected stores. “We are encouraging people to have their nails painted and purchase the Colour for a Cause for $6.99 with the full proceeds going to Ovarian Cancer Australia,” said Altona North Chemmart owner Denise Drew. “It’s a condition in which most people are unaware of the symptoms, so we are trying to promote the awareness of that,” Ms Drew said. Ms Drew and her staff have all painted their nails for the cause and are also offering instore manicures in return for a gold coin donation. Proceeds from the ‘Colour for a Cause’ polish packs and manicures will go to OCA to raise awareness of the symptoms, risks and impact of ovarian cancer and assist in the delivery of its awareness, support, advocacy and research programs. COUNCILS across the West want to make the region the next big tourist attraction. Western Melbourne Tourism, a regional cooperative funded with support from the Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham, Melton, Brimbank and Moonee Valley councils, will host a day-long forum next week in a bid to promote the West as a whole. Tourism Fest in the West will include keynote speakers Western Melbourne Tourism Patron Steve Bracks, destination marketing guru Simon McArthur, Professor Alison Morrison from Victoria University, as well as a range of other tourism industry leaders. “There is much about the West side of Melbourne that is rapidly changing and many Melburnians and visitors from further afield are appreciating more and more what the West has to offer,” Mr Bracks said. “New food, new cultural communities, new arts venues and events - there is a lot to love about Melbourne’s West. “There is a new awakening and the region needs to prepare and market itself for increasing numbers of visitors.” Western Melbourne Tourism Executive Officer Richard Ponsford said the demographic of the West had rapidly changed, which has in turn changed the vibe and opportunities in the West. “There’s a lot more people visiting the West. It’s a whole-sector opportunity and we want to capture that and let everyone know in the tourism industry what’s happening in the West,” Mr Ponsford said. “The traditional perception of the West is very industrial, flat and boring, but it’s actually full of change and new things. The whole image and brand of the West needs to be re-shaped. “From a tourism promotion point of view, it’s about capturing all the stuff that’s happening and making it really accessible for people, such as maps and event lists and all that sort of stuff.” Tourism Fest in the West will be held on 18 February. He can just walk but Kahlei Stone-Kelly can skate better than many grown-ups.
New board chairman By ESTHER LAUAKI A TWO-YEAR-OLD Wyndham boy has become an overnight global sensation after video footage of him landing tricks on his skateboard went viral. Kahlei Stone-Kelly from Tarneit can only just walk and is still in a nappy but is capturing international attention for his remarkable skating skills. He comes from a family of skaters and took to the sport when he was just six months old. The video, which shows the tiny trickster in a nappy skating over kerbs, down stairs and zipping around street corners, was posted on the internet by his dad to show family back home in New Zealand. A series of videos that followed received thousands of views and the home phone hasn’t stopped ringing since. Dad Meka Kelly says Kahlei would skate all day if he was allowed. “It gets to the point where if I don’t take him out for a skate he will start to play up, that’s how much he loves it. I was just being a proud dad. I was surprised to see him be good at it straight away so I recorded him for our family overseas. “We’ve had calls from people in Mexico, Washington, Argentina and even Japan. There have been a few skating contract offers but we’re taking it very slow. We just want to
skate and do what we do best. We’ll start small and work our way up.” Worldwide fame hasn’t fazed the talented toddler who fuels up on juice boxes and loves skating with his seven older siblings. The family moved to Melbourne last year to chase their skating dreams and have embraced the skating community with open arms. “We really wanted to get serious about skating and came to Australia to look for more opportunities here. We are so proud of all our kids, whether it’s skating, scooters or bikes; it’s just about getting them out there and letting them try everything. I’d encourage all parents and kids to be active and support your local parks,” Meka says. Mum, April Stone says she’s thrilled that all her children love to be active. “It gets them out of the house and keeps them active and out of trouble. It’s making them ‘push play’ every day, make friends - that’s a good thing. Moving to Australia has been great because it’s opened up so many opportunities for our kids,” she said. She admits she has some reservations about her family’s favourite pastime. “As a mother I’m always concerned about their safety and that will never go away. This is what they love to do and I’m a big supporter of whatever they want to do.”

Coconut oil for health FROM beating sugar cravings to aiding weight loss, there are more benefits of coconut oil than most of us may realise. All fats are not created equal. Coconut oil contains short term medium-chain saturated fatty acids (MCFAs), which is a “healthy” form saturated fat compared to trans-fat. Trans fatty acid consumption is linked with heart problems, depression and increased cholesterol levels. What does consuming MCFA fats in coconut oil mean for your body? The body metabolises these fats in the liver, immediately converting this into energy (fuel for the brain and muscle function) rather than it being stored as fat. One 2009 study looked at the weight loss link between women’s consumption of coconut oil and found that it reduces abdominal obesity. Researchers discovered coconut oil is easy to digest and also protects the body from insulin resistance. To try coconut oil for weight loss start by adding one teaspoon to your diet and gradually work your way up to four teaspoons per day. If you suffer from poor digestion or tummy bloating try adding coconut oil to your diet. Coconut oil has been found to benefit digestive disorders including irritable bowel syndrome and microbial related tummy bugs. Fatty acids in coconut oil contain anti-microbial properties, which have a sooth-
You’ll be surprised at the benefits of adding more coconut oil to your diet. ing effect on bacteria, candida, or parasites that cause poor digestion. A recent study by the Garvan Institute of Medical Research found that coconut oil protects against insulin resistance, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. MCFA fats are small enough to be absorbed into the cells where they’re quickly converted to energy. It is this process that not only reduces the amount of fat we pack into storage, but improves insulin sensitivity. Coconut is not just for your cooking - it’s a wonderfully hydrating treat for skin too. It keeps the skin’s connective tissues strong, which prevents sagging and wrinkles. Apply
coconut oil directly to your skin to soften the appearance of fine lines or use it daily on your face and body for a healthy glow. Be sure you use virgin coconut oil with no additives. Instead of reaching for the lolly jar for an afternoon sweet hit, try eating a teaspoon of virgin coconut oil to beat sugar cravings. This is because good quality fat is more satiating than carbs, so if you cut down on sugar you will feel less ‘ravenous’. Most of us do not realise but constant hunger is a major clue that your body is not being fed correctly. With the proper amounts of fats and protein, you can fuel your energy reserves properly, and come off the sugar roller coaster that many of us are on.

On the attack By LIAM TWOMEY SUNSHINE will need a strong bowling performance if it is to secure victory against Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association strugglers Melton. After winning the toss and batting first the Crows posted 137 on Saturday. The total could have been a lot higher, with six of the Sunshine batsmen making between 10 and 30. However, with no-one able to kick on to a big score and wickets constantly falling throughout the day, the Crows’ innings came to an end in the 63rd over. Troy Stone led the charge for Sunshine, top scoring with 30 while Nathan Armstrong chipped in with 29. For Melton, the hot temperatures did nothing to slow down Nathan Allen who was easily the pick of the bowlers. Allen took 7/42 from 18.3 overs in a spell which included three maidens. Paul Halfhide was the only other Melton bowler to take multiple wickets and finished the innings
with figures of 2/29. When play resumes this weekend, Melton will need to make 138 if it is to claim its second win of the VSDCA season and potentially move off the bottom of the ladder. For Sunshine, a win could lift the Crows into the top 10. Elsewhere in the VSDCA, Yarraville is chasing 218 this weekend as it tries to bring up an upset win against Altona. The Eagles lost the toss and were forced to bowl at Frank Kirk Oval on day one of the contest on Saturday. Despite Altona posting a strong total, it was only Aaron Maynard who got the better of the Yarraville bowlers. The gun number three batsman blasted his way to 111 after coming in with the score at 1/0. In another battle between two Western Suburbs teams, Werribee is on top against Williamstown after making 9/238 on Saturday. The Tigers were led by Tim O’Brien who made 106 not out.

shorts Dean shines for Dogs FOOTSCRAY returned to its winnings ways with a smashing of Dandenong in the Victorian Premier Cricket on the weekend. Bulldogs’ captain Dean Russ ensured he remained popular with his team-mates after he won the toss and had no hesitation batting first in the 40 degree heat on day one. Footscray went on to dominate the Dandenong bowlers for the next 90 overs as the runs came thick and fast. Travis Dean was outstanding after coming in at first drop, making 119 from 209 balls. The knock is also his first century of the season and included 15 boundaries. Dean was well supported by gun Victorian all-rounder John Hastings who again proved how dangerous he can be at Premier Cricket level. Coming in at number four, Hastings made 87 off just 128 balls in an innings which included seven fours and three sixes. A well-made 44 from Anthony Barton and 26 from Shanuka Dissanayake lifted the total to 7/328 after the completion of 90 overs. In reply, Footscray had no trouble ripping through the Dandenong batting line-up. Led by opening pair Jake Haberfield and Hamish Winter-Irving, the Bulldogs bowled the batting side out for 126 in the 50th over on Sunday.

Cougars poised to pounce By ADEM SARICAOGLU KEALBA Green Gully captaincoach Evan Long insists his Cougars are hungrier than ever to claim yet another Luscombe Shield title in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association. With just one more two-dayer to come before the NWMCA finals series kicks off in March, the Cougars are at least guaranteed a top two finish. Kealba has only lost three times in the summer to date, but the Cougars did manage to beat their main challenger to the Luscombe Shield crown, Pascoe Vale Central, in a two-dayer back in November. Long said his side is timing its run nicely ahead of March. “I’d like to think the hunger is still very high,” Long said. “When it comes to finals in particular, the motivation to play well in big games will bring out the best in us and it has done before, so hopefully that will be the case again for this year.

Evan Long is enjoying his first summer as captain-coach of Kealba Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT Green Gully. 107205 “I think the boys are just really eager for the finals to start, to be honest.” Long is nearing the completion
of his first year at the helm after replacing Andrew Lambropoulos as captain-coach at the start of the summer.
Since stepping down, Lambropoulos has starred at opening bat, currently averaging 37.9 with three half-centuries to his name. While he praised Lambropoulos’ work with the bat, Long told Star the support he’s been getting from his more senior team-mates has been significant throughout his first season in charge. “It’s a different challenge and it’s something that I’m enjoying - both captaining the side and wanting to get the best out of them,” Long said. “I know there’s a lot of experience underneath me, so to speak, and I count on that a lot. “Whether it’s the experience of Danny Viani or the experience of Andrew Lambropoulos before me I’m one of the youngest players and I’m the captain, so it’s a little bit of a different mix but I know the boys are behind me and we’re all striving for the same goals.” The Cougars are in the middle of a two-week bye and will host Gladstone Park in the final round - due to begin Saturday week.
DEFENDING champions City West Falcons will kick off their Victorian Netball League title defence this week. The Falcons enter the 2014 season with another strong line-up despite the retirement of last year’s co-captain Christie Barnes. She will be replaced in the leadership role by Kathleen Knott who is returning from a knee injury which hampered her 2013 season. Knott, who will share the captaincy duties with Casey Price, will slot into the goals and play alongside her sister Julia. Last year’s shooter Maggie Lind will push up into the midcourt. City West coach Marg Lind was happy with her side’s pre-season training form even though the start of the VNL season was brought forward two weeks. “I think we have probably done as much as we can, given that it is a bit of a condensed season,” Lind said. “I think we have done it pretty well. Hopefully we will get a little bit more in-house match play before we start next week.” There won’t be any time to settle into the new season for City West which will take on last year’s thirdplaced team VU Western Lightning in round one. “I expect VU to be a very tough first game and that could really go either way,” Lind said. ALTONA resident and Australian Twenty20 spinner James Muirhead has re-signed with the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers for the next four seasons. Having made his first-class debut as a rookie with the Bushrangers last summer, Muirhead was upgraded to a full contract this season and has since made his mark in the international arena during the recent Twenty20 series against England. The 20-year-old, who claimed career-best figures of 6-181 for a Cricket Australia Invitational XI against England at the SCG in November, said he was happy to put pen to paper with Victoria. “I feel like Victoria is the best environment for me to develop my cricket,” Muirhead said. “I was born in Melbourne, I live in Melbourne and now I can just focus on playing my cricket in Melbourne. “We’ve got a great set-up, with the best coaches ... so I’m very happy.” Over the course of the summer, Muirhead faced England in all three formats of the game, but it was his composure during the recent KFC T20 International Series that has thrown him into World Twenty20 calculations in Bangladesh after claiming four wickets at 16.00 and an economy rate of 6.40.

On the back of Australia’s Ashes dominance, local clubs are preparing for an increase in playing numbers next season. 114333 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI
Fast rising West By LIAM TWOMEY IT WILL go down as a golden summer in Australian Cricket. On the back of a 5-0 Ashes whitewash and beltings in the one day and Twenty20 series, Australia is back to its winning ways. But it is not just at the top level where plans for domination are hatched. Cricket Victoria regional manager for the West Metro region, Duncan Harrison also has big goals for the future. Working in one of the state’s fasting growing regions, Harrison has seen junior cricket in the West flourish in recent times. Not surprisingly, he is hoping the trend continues. “We want to be the biggest participation region, we want to have the strongest standards and the best coaches. We want cricket in the West to be powerful,” Harrison said. “We want everyone looking over at us in envy. “We have got a bit of work to do but we are making progress. We think we are lifting the standard of cricket in the West and hopefully that keeps going and keeps growing.” According to Harrison, one of the keys to building cricket in the region has centred on helping juniors transition from the introductory In2Cricket program to more structured competitions. Where youngsters who weren’t
ready to make the jump may have previously been lost to the game, they are now staying in cricket for longer through the T20 Blast program. Western Region Junior Cricket Association president Chris Hatzistavrou has seen first-hand the progress junior cricket has made in recent seasons. He believes another key to growing the game has been bringing the West’s separately run junior competitions under one banner. “We have got a lot more organised now,” Hatzistavrou said. “We used to have three or four junior associations and we are now one big association. We have got all the administrators on board. We have got a super group of people that are all focused on junior cricket. “The Williamstown Competition and the old West Metro merged about four years ago and we are in our fifth season now. Prior to that, we had the old Footscray Competition and the old Sunshine Competition and the Churches Competition that merged to create the Western Region. “We have got all the associations together as one so when we have meetings ... all the information is going out to all the people at the same time. “Once you make it easier for people to run a competition, it is then easier for people to run a club.”
While participation at junior level heads in the right direction, there is also an increased emphasis on helping top talent climb the ladder. The West’s premier cricket club, Footscray Edgewater launched its Bulldogs Academy last year and is already working with the region’s elite juniors. During the Christmas break, the academy organised a tour of Tasmania while there is also a tour of Sri Lanka planned for the winter. “I think traditionally, we have struggled in our pathway programs in the early age groups against the private school sector,” Harrison said. “Maribyrnong College has been a good one to come in and plug that gap as well and it’s great for us to have a sports school. “The Bulldogs Academy has created opportunities for a whole lot more cricketers to taste a lot more serious cricket. “There is going to be some sensational opportunities for cricketers growing up in the Western Suburbs over the next five or 10 years.” It isn’t just junior boys’ cricket where cricket in the West is expected to keep growing. The junior girls’ game is also expanding quickly after the successful launch of the Molly Strano Cup. “We have launched a program
aimed at girls playing against girls and we have probably got about 40-50 players playing regularly,” Harrison said. “We played a game at the MCG against Southern Districts and our girls won that game. It was a curtain raiser to the Stars and the Strikers (Big Bash League). That is an area that we are certainly looking at and want to develop over the next few years.” After back-to-back Ashes series and the success of the third Big Bash League, clubs are also preparing for an increase in numbers next season. “The Ashes series this year has been a story of success and mums and dads want to get their kids on board,” Hatzistavrou said. “I run a Milo program myself which is for the little tackers. I have only got a small group of about 30 and I have had a couple of phone calls even this week inquiring about it. “If I have a small group and I am getting a couple of phone calls then I’m sure others are too. I don’t normally get calls at this time of the year. It is normally tailing off. “It is obvious that the interest is there which has been generated through the Ashes Series and the Big Bash as well. It might be only a one or two per cent increase but we will probably start to feel that again next year.”

Five go national
In the

By ADEM SARICAOGLU
KEVIN HILLIER
Dogs in the thousands JUST on five thousand brave Bulldogs supporters turned up to Whitten Oval for the annual family day. I say brave because it was a dreadful day with the temperature hitting 40degrees and then a very strong southerly hit which did drop the temperature but also had everyone on edge hoping that the tents would not get blown away. President Peter Gordon told the diehards that he is pumped for the season while senior coach Brendan McCartney was his usual straight down the line tell it like it is self saying he wants the team to improve on last year. The club has a unique game coming up on 13 March at Whitten Oval when the Western Bulldogs will take on the Footscray Bulldogs around 5pm. Work will start soon on opposition change rooms and coaches boxes for the VFL games. THE Bulldogs Season Launch/ Hall of Fame night on 12 March will see Brad Johnson inducted into the Hall of Fame and maybe one or two others. “Johnno” is most deserving to be in that upper echelon of Bulldogs. His statistics alone tell a story, but when you look at the boy from Hoppers Crossing who grew up barracking for the red white and blue and then plays 364 games there is no argument. It is a boy’s own adventure, and I am sure his family will be there to support him as they did so well throughout his career. I have no inside information at all, but it would be the icing on the cake if he went into the Hall of Fame with his great mate Rohan Smith who also deserves that accolade. They were inseparable during their playing days and, in fact, I got great comedic mileage at functions when interviewing either one. They played along as you would expect from a couple of genuinely great blokes. SOME upcoming events and news. Hoppers Crossing Junior Netball Association began its season earlier this month and is looking for players in all grades from under 11 through to Under 21s. Games are held on Saturday mornings at Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing and you can contact Lisa Caithness for more details on 0413 012 376. The Yarraville Club Cricket Club has the annual Ladies Pink Day on Saturday 22 February from 4pm at Hansen Reserve. Cost is $40 which includes entrance, door prizes, raffle tickets, food, bubbly and entertainment. Contact Cathie Strachan on 0418 594 110 for bookings. ROTARY’S annual Jalna Big Bay Swim is on Sunday 23 February from Port Melbourne to Williamstown. The 3.2km swim actually is that big that the shipping channel gets closed down for an hour while the race takes place. Marathon swimmer Chloe McCardel is the ambassador for the swim and will compete again and past winners include Tammy van Wisse, Rob Woodhouse and Sam Shepherd. Spectators can enjoy live music and the good food and beverages in Commonwealth Reserve in Williamstown next to the finishing point Pelican’s Landing restaurant on the pier. FIVE clubs from Melbourne’s West have been offered licences to join the new National Premier Leagues Victoria competition. Former Victorian Premier League giants Melbourne Knights and Green Gully will join State League One clubs St Albans, Sunshine George Cross and Werribee City - who have all been invited to join the new league set to be rolled out for the upcoming season. Altona Magic and Western Suburbs are the two notable former SL1 clubs that have not been offered an NPL license. Last week Football Federation Victoria announced the 30 clubs and entities that will most likely form the Victorian NPL competition. Each club is now required to confirm their participation by Wednesday next week. The FFV has not yet released details on the structure of the league, but an an-
nouncement is expected to be made in coming days. The final fixture has been slated for a 26 February release. FFV president Nick Monteleone acknowledged the clubs’ efforts in applying for a spot in the new league after what has been a troubled six months for the federation and the local game. “FFV recognises the tremendous level of effort and resources required to produce an NPL submission,” Monteleone said. “All applicants should be congratulated for their dedication in submitting an application. I would like to also thank the assessment panel for its hard work reviewing all 37 applications. “The NPL will have a positive impact on players, coaches and club development across all of Victoria.” Liam Bentley has been appointed Head of NPL Victoria.

Cougars eye flag from outset By ADEM SARICAOGLU EAST Keilor was less than a goal away from making another Essendon District Football League Division Two grand final in 2013. The young and exuberant Cougars led by five goals, going into the final term of their preliminary final battle against Moonee Valley. But David Battistella’s men couldn’t penetrate into a strong wind at Tullamarine’s Leo Dineen Reserve, allowing five unanswered Moonee Valley goals to go down by three points. The grand final between the Valley and Hillside, however, played out as expected, with the latter coming away with a comfortable 63-point win to earn promotion. This time around, with no Hillside to worry about and nobody coming down from Division One, East Keilor will go into the 2014 season as a genuine favourite for the Division Two flag.
Marc Caruso is set to return for East Keilor after playing just two games for the Cougars last season. 100732 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT Battistella is well aware of the increased expectation placed on his Cougars for the upcoming season, and said he hoped to at least match
the feats of 2013 later this year. “You don’t want to go backwards as a football club, on the field or off the field,” Battistella said.

“There’s no doubt that our number one aim is to be playing off in that grand final. “We want to keep moving forward and so to do that you’d be disappointed if you couldn’t at least get to the last two weeks.” Battistella said there would be no major changes to the list he had at his disposal in 2013. However, the Cougars are expecting to add a couple of new additions to the squad, with Josh Brennan (Western Australia) and Scott Eldridge (Craigieburn) listed as possible inclusions for the 2014 campaign. Young gun forward Dion Hill, who is training with the Coburg Lions, is also one of a group of East Keilor players currently pursuing opportunities at TAC Cup and VFL level. East Keilor will renew hostilities with Moonee Valley in round one of the new season on the first weekend of April.

Cultivating sport habit early ONLY six out of 10 children aged between five and 14 years participate in sport outside of school, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The Australian Health Survey conducted in April 2012 found that 25 per cent of Australian children and teenagers, aged five to 17 years, are overweight or obese, indicating that we need to foster a more sports-minded culture that encourages children to be physically active. People who are active dramatically reduce their risk of many diseases, including heart disease and osteoporosis. Regular exercise is also known to reduce the risk of emotional
problems such as anxiety and depression. Habits are established early in life, and evidence suggests that physically active children are more likely to mature into physically active adults. Some of the many benefits of sport participation for children include a reduced risk of obesity, increased cardiovascular fitness, healthy growth of bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons, improved co-ordination and balance and a greater ability to physically relax and, therefore, avoid the complications of chronic muscular tension such as headache or back ache.
There are also mental health benefits, such as greater confidence, improved social skills, improved personal skills including co-operation and leadership. Reducing inactivity may be more effective in achieving overall increases in energy levels in young children than putting the emphasis on increasing involvement in sporting activities. Taking steps to reduce children’s sedentary time is important. According to the Bureau of Statistics, over the 12 months prior to April 2012 in Australia, 1.7 million or 60 per cent of children aged five to 14 years
participated in at least one sport outside of school hours that had been organised by a school, club or association. Participation among boys (949,000) exceeded that of girls (727,000), both overall and within each age group category. Children aged nine to 11 years were most likely to participate in sport (66 per cent). The three most popular or-
ganised sports for boys in 2011 to 2012 were soccer (22 per cent of total), swimming and Australian rules football. For girls, swimming/diving (19 per cent of total) and netball were predominant. Parents can help their children to be physically active in a number of ways by leading by example and engaging in physical activity.
Make sure that some family outings offer opportunities for physical activity, such as playing sport together and encouraging children to walk or ride their bicycle for short trips, rather than rely on their parents to drive them. Most importantly, support your child’s efforts in sport. Make sure you’re there at each match, cheering them on from the sidelines.
