Car theft crime By CHARLENE MACAULAY LOCK up your cars - the City of Maribyrnong has been named as one of the top 50 areas in Australia for short term car theft. The National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council’s motor vehicle theft report shows Mairbyrnong ranked 50th for short term car thefts and 48th for profit-based car thefts in the country, with 340 vehicles stolen from the area over the 2012-13 financial year. Short term theft represents cars stolen by opportunistic thieves to use in other crimes or joy riding and are always recovered by police. Profit motivated theft represents cars that are stolen to be sold off as a whole or for spare parts. Footscray Police Inspector Tony Long said it was disappointing to see Maribyrnong on the list. “It is important to note that we have been working very hard on reducing the number of vehicle crime offences here in Maribyrnong,” he said. “We have a specific team of police, the Crime Impact Team, which work specifically on vehicle related crime. “They have had great success and when coupled with the efforts of all our other works units, we have been able to reduce vehicle theft by
over 35 per cent.” Insp Long said the low socioeconomic status of the municipality, combined with the high rate of university students meant that there were older cars on the City of Maribyrnong’s roads, which were easier to break into than newer models. The report found that 48 per cent of all vehicle thefts in Australia took place in residential dwellings, up from 43 per cent over 2008-09. Insp Long said there were a number of steps drivers could take to prevent vehicle theft. “Firstly, keep your car locked you’d be surprised how many people forget this basic step to prevent access to their car. “If the vehicle is parked at home, obviously the best place is in a locked garage. If that’s not possible, a vehicle parked up a driveway, preferably behind locked gates is next best and if you can, fit an alarm and immobiliser. “The cost of these additions can be prohibitive, so if that’s out of your reach you can’t beat the plain old fashioned Club Lock. It’s cheap, needs no professional fitting and it works.”
Love letters
TWO Melbourne artists will be busy playing Cupid at Highpoint Shopping Centre this week. Kate Pullen, pictured, and Gaston Castagnet will create free handcrafted love notes for customers wanting to put a special touch on their Valentine’s Day gifts. Ms Pullen, who is a graphic designer, illustrator and typographer, said some couples struggle to find the right words to express their love for each other. “We’re not all Jane Austen-style romantics, so we’ll be lending customers a hand to help them communicate a message of love in an original and inspired way,” she said. “It’s so nice to get a card and letter that has been handwritten - the effort and thought is lovely.” The artists will be available this Thursday and Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI Friday outside David Jones on Level 2. 114176

Tourism fest for the West By CHARLENE MACAULAY COUNCILS across the West want to make the region the next big tourist attraction. Western Melbourne Tourism, a regional cooperative funded with support from the Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham, Melton, Brimbank and Moonee Valley councils, will host a day-long forum next week in a bid to promote the West as a whole. Tourism Fest in the West will include keynote speakers Western Melbourne Tourism Patron Steve Bracks, destination marketing guru Simon McArthur, Professor Alison Morrison from Victoria University, as well as a range of other tourism industry leaders. “There is much about the West side of Melbourne that is rapidly changing and many Melburnians and visitors from further afield are appreciating more and more what the West has to offer,” Mr Bracks said. “New food, new cultural communities, new arts venues and events - there is a lot to love about Melbourne’s West. “There is a new awakening and the region needs to prepare and market itself for increasing numbers of visitors.” Western Melbourne Tourism Executive Officer Richard Ponsford said the demographic of the West had rapidly changed, which has in turn changed the vibe and opportunities in the West. “There’s a lot more people visiting the West. It’s a whole-sector opportunity and we want to capture that and let everyone know in the tourism industry what’s happening in the West,” Mr Ponsford said. Tourism Fest in the West will be held on 18 February. For more information and to book, go to www.trybooking.com/71672

Units a bargain in Footscray By CHARLENE MACAULAY IF YOU’RE in the market for a unit or apartment, try Footscray or West Footscray. The two suburbs featured prominently in the top five bargain apartment sales across Melbourne earlier this month, with three properties making the list. The cheapest was a newly-renovated two-bedroom unit in Argyle St, West Footscray which sold for $340,000 before auction. The other two were two-bedroom apartments in the same Whitehall St apartment block, which sold for $410,000 and $420,000 respective-
ly. Paul Bird from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria said West Footscray in particular was a buyer’s market for apartments and units. “West Footscray is indeed one of the more affordable Melbourne suburbs in terms of apartments,” he said. “At $310,000 in the December quarter, it is well below the metropolitan median unit price of $498,000. “However, it should be noted that there were a lower than normal number of auctions last weekend (1 and 2 February) - there were only 90 - and next weekend there will be around 300.”
Nick Meddis from Biggin and Scott said many apartments and units were being bought as investment properties. “There are cheaper areas, but Footscray and West Footscray is starting to grow in value but is still affordable.” Dean Johnson from Sweeney Estate Agents in Footscray, who sold the Whitehall St apartments, said both apartments had sold for well above the median price for the suburb. “For inner Melbourne, they were cheap, but for Footscray per se, no - they were right up there,” he said. “Your average newer two-bed-
room apartment are only about mid$300,000s. “These were slightly bigger than your average, they had fantastic views of the city and it’s a small, boutique-type apartment block that is a mix of apartments and offices. “Footscray would still be the cheapest inner-suburb of Melbourne. “There’s a lot (of apartments) being built, or in the planning process. The State Government is trying to take the pressure of the CBD and make Footscray sort of a miniMelbourne.”

Man knocked out on slide By CHARLENE MACAULAY A MAN in his forties was knocked unconscious on a water slide in one of many water accidents around the state. Paramedics were called to a public pool in Keilor Downs around 7.30pm on 2 February after the unconscious man was pulled from the water. The man was treated by paramedics and taken to Footscray’s Western Hospital in a stable condition. Ambulance Victoria Group Manager Graeme Parker the accident was one of many water incidents that Ambulance Victoria paramedics have attended to this month alone. Other incidents include a boy who was injured when he hit his head on the side of a pool doing a somersault at Berwick and a man in his thirties who was knocked unconscious after hitting something submerged while water skiing in Ebden. “Something so innocent as swimming in a pool can turn out tragically,” Mr Parker said. “It’s a timely response to the community this time of year. While water activities are a great past time and leisure activity, there’s a lot of danger associated with that. “Be careful around water. It’s something we see all too often.” Meanwhile, Sport and Recreation Minister Hugh Delahunty said it was important for families to be safe in and around the water - whether it was a pool, lake or beach. “Victorians need to pay closer attention to water safety after another increase in people drowning across the state,” Mr Delahunty said. “Every drowning death is a tragedy.”

Canines set to strut their doggy fashions on the red carpet By CHARLENE MACAULAY DOES your dog have what it takes to become Yarraville’s next top model? The Yarraville Village Animal Hospital and Urban Paws Doggy Daycare are on the prowl for fashionable pooches across the West to take to the catwalk at the annual Pet Fashion Parade, which will run this month as part of the Yarraville Festival.
Previous years have seen dogs embrace their inner movie stars and emulate famous roles, while robot and superhero costumes are a perennial favourite. Pet owners can also get in on the act and dress up to complement their pooch. Last year, Buzz the dog won the crown for his Cadel Evans getup, backed up by owners Max and Charlie who dressed up in lycra and
helmets for the event. Popular comedian and media personality Dave O’Neil will return to the West to host the event alongside special guest judges Melinda De Payva from Urban Paws, Rhonda Dunmill from the Yarraville Village Animal Hospital, and Miss Gay and Miss Transsexual Australia Pageant organiser Gayzha Davao. “Organising and judging a dog fashion parade cannot be harder
than a Miss Australia contest,” Ms Davao said. Prizes will be given out to the craziest and most imaginatively dressed dogs. The event will run on 16 February from 2pm. Dogs and their owners can preregister or show up on the day. Call Urban Paws on 9077 0562 or Yarraville Village Animal Hospital on 9689 8100 to enter.
THE Maidstone Hall has been demolished to make way for a $630,000 revamp of the site. Maribyrnong City Council Mayor Grant Miles has told Star that asbestos has already been safely removed and demolition has been carried out to prepare the site, which will include two public tennis courts, a refurbished tennis pavilion and a new and extended park. The masterplan will be officially endorsed at a council meeting this month, and works will go ahead in coming months. Cr Miles said the tennis courts will be in place by the end of June, while works on the tennis pavilion will start in the next financial year. “It’s very exciting,” he said. “The Maidstone Tennis Facility site has been closed for 15 years and the draft masterplan proposes it be reactivated soon for the whole community to enjoy. “The draft masterplan proposes a host of benefits for recreation, leisure and other community uses. “We’re giving the community what they want.” The site, which used to belong to the Brimbank City Council, housed a Meals on Wheels kitchen, child care centre and tennis courts. The yellow-brick Maidstone Hall had been largely disused since 1999 and the pavilion since 2007. The council voted last year to demolish the existing community hall after a report found it would cost more than $1 million to return it to its former glory.

THERE’S nothing quite like enjoying an ice-cream on a warm summer’s day. In Yarraville, Hello Gelo owner Scott Steegstra has spent the past four-and-a-half years making those special summer days a reality. Mr Steegstra opened up his ice-creamery after completing a Bachelor of Business, majoring in catering, and running a successful café in North Carlton. “I always thought there was a market for ice-cream in Yarraville ... and I wanted to go back into the kitchen,” he said. “You don’t understand until you do it, how weather-dependent ice-cream is. “Those first couple of years when we had those wet, cooler
summers was really quite tough. “You need sunshine - even in July, if it’s a perfect, sunny, 18 degree Saturday afternoon, we’ll be really busy, busier than on a 25 degree humid, cloudy summer’s day.” Me Steegstra makes all of his own ice-cream and is constantly experimenting with flavours, which range from chocolate with ginger and cashew to lychee sorbet. There are always 26 flavours on display, but his repertoire is at least three times that. The staples - chocolate, vanilla, bubblegum - are always out on display, while Mr Steegstra rotates the others around depending on their popularity. The salted caramel has become a crowd favourite, but Mr
Steegstra personally loves the strawberry. “If I had to pick just one ... it’s made with 25 per cent strawberries and the flavour is incredible,” he said. Nearly five years on, Mr Steegstra said he was glad he made the switch from his café to Hello Gelo. “Ice cream makes people happy. “It’s a want, not a need. People come in here because they want an ice-cream, not because they need breakfast. It’s a bit of a luxury and everyone loves it - it’s not like a customer is going to send back an overcooked egg, or anything like that. “Seeing the joy that people get from eating it makes it all worthwhile.”

Little free library By CHARLENE MACAULAY IT’S the little free library that’s keeping Yarraville bookworms well read. Somerville Rd resident Dagmara Gieysztor has joined a worldwide movement and created her own publicly available bookcase embedded in her colourful fence. Working under the premise of take a book, leave a book, the Wildgoose Little Free Library allows bookworms to indulge in their passion without having to pay for every new book they read. Ms Gieysztor opened up the
library in November 2012 after inheriting a lifetime’s worth of books from a friend. “No-one could read that amount of books in a lifetime, and because he was such a lover of books I thought it would be nice to do something that kind of shares that idea,” she said. “I really don’t remember how I first heard about the Little Free Library, but I just put one in my fence. “Most of them are different; they’re free-standing and often in a more public place, like near a community centre or school, but I thought it would be quite convenient to pop my head out
the door and add more books.” The artist, who favours classic literature, said the response to the Wildgoose Library had been huge. “It really has a life of its own. I very rarely have to fill it. People might take one and leave one, or they might take four and return 10. “Sometimes I mix and match them, because it might all be crime fiction, or all Dan Brown. “It’s interesting to find out what books your neighbours are reading. Sometimes a book will disappear so quickly ... it’s just so nice.”

Footy history in the making By XAVIER SMERDON WHILE she was in office almost every aspect of former Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s life and work was analysed on an almost daily basis. But a Tarneit student has used his summer holidays to research a different side of Australia’s first female Prime Minister, her identity as a western suburbs Australian Rules Football fan. Sport and Recreation Management student Sam Wharton has spent time researching the Prime Minister’s Cup - created under Julia Gillard for the winner between the Western Bulldogs and Greater Western Sydney football matches - as part of a Victoria University Summer School. The select group of students in the program each researched an aspect of history in elite sporting organisations including the Western Bulldogs and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. “I chose to research the Prime Minister’s Cup because I thought there was an interesting story there about what the two clubs have in common and about how Julia Gillard sees herself as a Bulldogs supporter who grew up in the western suburbs to become the first female PM,” Sam said. “As part of the project I’m asking questions about her ideas behind implementing the cup, how she identifies with the western suburbs and how she got into football, which is all pretty exciting.” Sam said the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a professional sporting organisation

Victoria University sport historian and program manager Dr Rob Hess said students, who present their findings to academic staff and club personnel in the Victoria University Whitten Oval boardroom at the end of summer school, produced
some fascinating findings. “There are always interesting snippets of history about the memorabilia associated with the club, the scandals or controversies that often erupted, and the amazing rivalries that particular players or teams had with other clubs,” Dr Hess said. “We collect all this miscellaneous research and add it to the club’s database: the club appreciates the knowledge transfer because it helps them build their history and the students love it because it’s such a real-life learning experience for them.”

Musician Darren Coggan set to inspire audiences in Peace Train.
On track for Cat “It’s good to go back to the well and hear the songs as they were originally written, on just an acoustic guitar and piano,” he said. Back in the ’70s, Cat Stevens was the ultimate rock star. Talented, charismatic, with a seemingly endless succession of beautiful melodies streaming from his imagination, the international singing star had everything. He sold more than 60 million albums, earned enough money to last several lifetimes, and enjoyed all the trappings of fame, but he wanted more out of life. So at the height of his career he shocked the world by taking his last bow. The music stopped and Cat Stevens was no more. Peace Train is a night of music and story-telling which will strike a chord deep inside the heart of anyone who longs for something more, a journey back in time, with songs that
still resonate today. Hear 24 hits sung with remarkable authenticity by one of Australia’s most exciting artists. From Moonshadow, to Morning Has Broken, Wild World, Father and Son, First Cut Is The Deepest, Hard Headed Woman and Peace Train, Darren Coggan traces the path of a man who never stoppedwondering about how to make the world a better place. Darren Coggan has toured extensively with stage shows Grease - The Mega Musical, Happy Days - The Arena Mega Musical, and Shout - The Musical Of The Wild One. He has appeared regularly on TV, including several guest appearances on Channel 7’s All Saints and currently is a presenter on Sydney Weekender. He has also been awarded two Golden Guitar awards at the CMAA Country Music Awards in 2001 and 2008.

SINCE its debut performance at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre in 2009, Darren Coggan’s Peace Train has gone on to inspire many others, playing to standing ovations in the most prestigious venues in Australia. It now returns for national encore performances around the country. This phase of this shows’ incredible journey sees Darren recreating Cat’s timeless, intimate songs as they were originally written - on an acoustic guitar and piano, seeking out the man in the music and telling the story behind the songs. “It’s been a wonderful journey touring Australia with this show and whilst it’s always a thrill to be surrounded on stage by great musicians, I have always envisaged presenting Peace Train in a more intimate setting,” said Coggan. “The singer-songwriter genre and particularly the music of Cat Stevens lends itself beautifully to an acoustic setting.

Dean shines for Footscray By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY returned to its winnings ways with a smashing of Dandenong in the Victorian Premier Cricket on the weekend. Bulldogs’ captain Dean Russ ensured he remained popular with his team-mates after he won the toss and had no hesitation batting first in the 40 degree heat on day one. Footscray went on to dominate the Dandenong bowlers for the next 90 overs as the runs came thick and fast. Travis Dean was outstanding after coming in at first drop, making 119 from 209 balls. The knock is also his first century
of the season and included 15 boundaries. Dean was well supported by gun Victorian all-rounder John Hastings who again proved how dangerous he can be at Premier Cricket level. Coming in at number four, Hastings made 87 off just 128 balls in an innings which included seven fours and three sixes. A well-made 44 from Anthony Barton and 26 from Shanuka Dissanayake lifted the total to 7/328 after the completion of 90 overs. In reply, Footscray had no trouble ripping through the Dandenong batting line-up. Led by opening pair Jake
Haberfield and Hamish WinterIrving, the Bulldogs bowled the batting side out for 126 in the 50th over on Sunday. Winter-Irving finished with the best figures for the innings, taking 3/19 while Haberfield took 2/27. They were well supported by Hastings, as he returned to cause even more headaches. The all-rounder capped off a brilliant game with figures of 2/21. The result lifts Footscray to a 13-3 win/loss record for the season. When round 17 gets underway this weekend, the Bulldogs will take on the Camberwell Magpies.

Uphill task if Eagles dare
Yarraville eyes top four finish
By LIAM TWOMEY YARRAVILLE will need to make 218 this weekend if it is to produce an upset win against Altona. The Eagles lost the toss and were forced to bowl in the 40 degree temperatures at Frank Kirk Oval on day one of the contest on Saturday. Despite Altona posting a strong total, it was only Aaron Maynard who got the better of the Yarraville bowlers. The gun number three batsman blasted his way to 111 after coming in with the score at 1/0. Altona president Neil Burns was full of praise for Maynard. “In 39 degree heat, Aaron Maynard coming in at number three and batting almost all day was sensational,” Burns said. “He is the anchor for the side, and everyone bats around him. He hits the singles when they are required and he hits the boundaries when they are required. “Aaron is one of our best trainers and one of our fittest blokes. He has taken his entire game to a whole new level and he is the professional of our club. “He really has that mental toughness and fitness to be able to bat all day.” For Yarraville, Alex Hewet was the pick of the bowlers, taking five wickets while Tim McRae also chipped in with three scalps. When play resumes on Saturday, the Eagles will be hunting their third win of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season. Yarraville is currently in 13th spot on the ladder. At the other end of the scale, a win for the fifth-placed Altona would go a long way to guaranteeing its place in the finals. “For us, with Andrew McCammond not playing, our bowlers need to do exactly what we have been trying to all year,” Burns said. “We have done it sporadically throughout the season, which is bowl outside the off stump, line and length. If we give some of their good players a sniff, on our track and on our ground 220 is a very gettable score. We need to be bowling line and length and just continue to be outside that off stump.”

A TIDY bowling display on Saturday has put Yarraville Club on track for a win that could cement a top four spot in Senior Division Turf Cricket. The Clubbers, forced to bowl in the heat on their home deck at Walker Oval, managed to restrict Bentleigh to 2/128 in 42 overs. An early run out removed opener Robert Ciccarella (20) with 24 runs on the board before Adam Contessa trapped Troy Gill (7) on the pads to put Bentleigh on the back foot at 2/41. However the wickets soon dried up as Bentleigh skipper Greg Todd and Jeff Keyt wrested back control in the middle. Todd ground his way through the heat to finish the day’s play at 41 not out, while at the other end Keyt fired an unbeaten 51 off 85 balls. Contessa was the lone wickettaker for the Clubbers with figures of 1/13 and three maidens off eight overs. Andrew Cullen proved to be one of Yarraville Club’s tidier bowlers on the day, conceding just 12 runs from five overs, while Emmett Bronca was also economical with two maidens and 22 runs coming off his nine overs. Michael O’Keefe also bowled three maidens, ending the day with figures of 0/29 from 10 overs. Meanwhile in Turf Cricket’s North Division on Saturday, lowly Footscray United could only muster up 64 runs before getting bowled out at home to Tullamarine. The Bulldogs only lasted 31.3 overs in the middle at Scovell Reserve before the visitors got a head start on their chase, facing 11 overs before stumps were called on the day’s play. Tullamarine will resume its innings at 0/29 this weekend. A loss for Footscray United will guarantee relegation, as the last-placed Bulldogs are currently two wins below Williamstown CYMS and will only have one more chance to score a win before the home-and-away season concludes in early March.

On the back of Australia’s Ashes dominance, local clubs are preparing for an increase in playing numbers next season. 114333_01 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI
Fast rising West By LIAM TWOMEY IT WILL go down as a golden summer in Australian Cricket. On the back of a 5-0 Ashes whitewash and beltings in the one day and Twenty20 series, Australia is back to its winning ways. But it is not just at the top level where plans for domination are hatched. Cricket Victoria regional manager for the West Metro region, Duncan Harrison also has big goals for the future. Working in one of the state’s fasting growing regions, Harrison has seen junior cricket in the West flourish in recent times. Not surprisingly, he is hoping the trend continues. “We want to be the biggest participation region, we want to have the strongest standards and the best coaches. We want cricket in the West to be powerful,” Harrison said. “We want everyone looking over at us in envy. “We have got a bit of work to do but we are making progress. We think we are lifting the standard of cricket in the West and hopefully that keeps going and keeps growing.” According to Harrison, one of the keys to building cricket in the region has centred on helping juniors transition from the introductory In2Cricket program to more structured competitions. Where youngsters who weren’t
ready to make the jump may have previously been lost to the game, they are now staying in cricket for longer through the T20 Blast program. Western Region Junior Cricket Association president Chris Hatzistavrou has seen first-hand the progress junior cricket has made in recent seasons. He believes another key to growing the game has been bringing the West’s separately run junior competitions under one banner. “We have got a lot more organised now,” Hatzistavrou said. “We used to have three or four junior associations and we are now one big association. We have got all the administrators on board. We have got a super group of people that are all focused on junior cricket. “The Williamstown Competition and the old West Metro merged about four years ago and we are in our fifth season now. Prior to that, we had the old Footscray Competition and the old Sunshine Competition and the Churches Competition that merged to create the Western Region. “We have got all the associations together as one so when we have meetings ... all the information is going out to all the people at the same time. “Once you make it easier for people to run a competition, it is then easier for people to run a club.”
While participation at junior level heads in the right direction, there is also an increased emphasis on helping top talent climb the ladder. The West’s premier cricket club, Footscray Edgewater launched its Bulldogs Academy last year and is already working with the region’s elite juniors. During the Christmas break, the academy organised a tour of Tasmania while there is also a tour of Sri Lanka planned for the winter. “I think traditionally, we have struggled in our pathway programs in the early age groups against the private school sector,” Harrison said. “Maribyrnong College has been a good one to come in and plug that gap as well and it’s great for us to have a sports school. “The Bulldogs Academy has created opportunities for a whole lot more cricketers to taste a lot more serious cricket. “There is going to be some sensational opportunities for cricketers growing up in the Western Suburbs over the next five or 10 years.” It isn’t just junior boys’ cricket where cricket in the West is expected to keep growing. The junior girls’ game is also expanding quickly after the successful launch of the Molly Strano Cup. “We have launched a program
aimed at girls playing against girls and we have probably got about 40-50 players playing regularly,” Harrison said. “We played a game at the MCG against Southern Districts and our girls won that game. It was a curtain raiser to the Stars and the Strikers (Big Bash League). That is an area that we are certainly looking at and want to develop over the next few years.” After back-to-back Ashes series and the success of the third Big Bash League, clubs are also preparing for an increase in numbers next season. “The Ashes series this year has been a story of success and mums and dads want to get their kids on board,” Hatzistavrou said. “I run a Milo program myself which is for the little tackers. I have only got a small group of about 30 and I have had a couple of phone calls even this week inquiring about it. “If I have a small group and I am getting a couple of phone calls then I’m sure others are too. I don’t normally get calls at this time of the year. It is normally tailing off. “It is obvious that the interest is there which has been generated through the Ashes Series and the Big Bash as well. It might be only a one or two per cent increase but we will probably start to feel that again next year.”

JUST on five thousand brave Bulldogs supporters turned up to Whitten Oval for the annual family day. I say brave because it was a dreadful day with the temperature hitting 40degrees and then a very strong southerly hit which did drop the temperature but also had everyone on edge hoping that the tents would not get blown away. President Peter Gordon told the diehards that he is pumped for the season while senior coach Brendan McCartney was his usual straight down the line tell it like it is self saying he wants the team to improve on last year. The club has a unique game coming up on 13 March at Whitten Oval when the Western Bulldogs will take on the Footscray Bulldogs around 5pm. Work will start soon on opposition change rooms and coaches boxes for the VFL games. THE Bulldogs Season Launch/ Hall of Fame night on 12 March will see Brad Johnson inducted into the Hall of Fame and maybe one or two others. “Johnno” is most deserving to be in that upper echelon of Bulldogs. His statistics alone tell a story, but when you look at the boy from Hoppers Crossing who grew up barracking for the red white and blue and then plays 364 games there is no argument. It is a boy’s own adventure, and I am sure his family will be there to support him as they did so well throughout his career. I have no inside information at all, but it would be the icing on the cake if he went into the Hall of Fame with his great mate Rohan Smith who also deserves that accolade. They were inseparable during their playing days and, in fact, I got great comedic mileage at functions when interviewing either one. They played along as you would expect from a couple of genuinely great blokes. SOME upcoming events and news. Hoppers Crossing Junior Netball Association began its season earlier this month and is looking for players in all grades from under 11 through to Under 21s. Games are held on Saturday mornings at Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing and you can contact Lisa Caithness for more details on 0413 012 376. The Yarraville Club Cricket Club has the annual Ladies Pink Day on Saturday 22 February from 4pm at Hansen Reserve. Cost is $40 which includes entrance, door prizes, raffle tickets, food, bubbly and entertainment. Contact Cathie Strachan on 0418 594 110 for bookings. ROTARY’S annual Jalna Big Bay Swim is on Sunday 23 February from Port Melbourne to Williamstown. The 3.2km swim actually is that big that the shipping channel gets closed down for an hour while the race takes place. Marathon swimmer Chloe McCardel is the ambassador for the swim and will compete again and past winners include Tammy van Wisse, Rob Woodhouse and Sam Shepherd. Spectators can enjoy live music and the good food and beverages in Commonwealth Reserve in Williamstown next to the finishing point Pelican’s Landing restaurant on the pier. Check out the website bigbayswim.com.au MY great mate Tony Fox has alerted me to the ANBY 50th year reunion coming up in 2017. Yes, they are getting in early but for good reason as many clubs have found that leaving it to the last minute is disastrous. They have set up a Facebook page as the contact point for those who were involved in the club. I have run into several people already who are excited by the event. Head to the Altona North Brooklyn Sports Club Facebook page and let them know of your interest. They already have over a hundred involved, and it is very early days. Any club that was founded in the Guiding Star Hotel will have a ripping reunion celebration.

YARRAVILLE-SEDDON announced two exciting recruits last week with Jessi Lampi and Daniel Burton joining the club. Lampi tore up the Western Region Football League’s Division Two competition for Sanctuary Lakes last season and will now get the chance to pit his talents against the best players in the competition. He will be joined by the versatile Burton who has been involved with the Western Jets and can fill a range of key position roles. Eagles’ recruiting manager Rob Green was rapt to have both young stars on board. “Jessi is going to help us fill a gap in our midfield,” Green said. “As a club we set some challenges and some goals to recruit some players who were under 23. He fits the criteria really well. “Daniel has played a lot of TAC cup with the Western Jets over the last two years. “He is a player who can play in most positions down the spine. He is going to be really important to us. “Those two players have performed really well at their level and have experienced some pressure at their level. I think they can add some great value to our team and our squad.” Lampi and Burnton will join ruckman Giles Guest who signed at the Eagles last year. “We look at our coach (Jesse Smith) and we think he is going to be a great development coach for the players. Hopefully in three years time we are going to reap the rewards of recruiting these players,” Green added. There may be more recruiting news for Yarraville in the coming days with the Eagles still talking to a number of players to complete their 2014 list. “We are talking to another five over the next three days and we are pretty confident we will pick up those five,” Green said.

Record medal haul for taekwondo club By LIAM TWOMEY THE International Taekwon-Do Defence Force has enjoyed another stunning Australian Championships. Athletes from the centre, which trains students throughout the West, dominated the competition on their way to a record medal haul at the event in Wagga Wagga late last year. Club head coach Danny Kordanovski was rapt with the results. “We have some tremendous talent,” he said. “Most of these guys have competed at international events and they have been doing that for the last few years. “The national competition, we were always going to feature quite well in it, which we did, but it is still a very tough competition. “They are very well prepared, and I think they performed very well. “For our guys it’s like, let’s get out there and enjoy this. That really makes you perform even better which is great.” As well as the great club results, there was an extra special win for brother and sister duo Phillip and Hoa Le. After dominating the competition in their respective divisions, the
Phillip and Hoa Le don’t mess about when it comes to taekwondo. 113465 pair were named the overall men’s and women’s champion athletes for the event. Both Phillip and Hoa finished the tournament with four gold medals and one silver medal each. “It’s great to take out the overall
male and female award for the tournament, but the fact that they are brother and sister, it is very special and very rare,” Kordanovski said. “They are the best brother and sister duo I have seen by far. “These guys are now third degree

black belts and have been training with me since they were children. “They have competed twice now at international events as well as brother and sister. It really is a phenomenal effort. This is the first time they have won the overall award.”

Our Lightning gets cracking By LIAM TWOMEY FOR the third successive year VU Western Lightning will enter the Victorian Netball League with a brand new goal set-up. In the off-season the Lightning lost shooting pair Erin McCarthy, who is going overseas, and Meg Fitzpatrick, who ruptured her ACL while playing for the Victorian Flames. Fitzpatrick is also expected to miss the entire season. The duo will be replaced in goals by Kate Thompson and Sophie Barr. “Kate was in the Australian under-21 program at the AIS
for the best part of the last two years,” VU coach Matt Hills said. “She is only a young goal shooter and she will add a bit of potency to our forward line. “We have also moved Sophie Barr back into goals. She was in goals when we made the grand final.” After finishing second in 2012 and third in 2013, Hills is expecting another tough year. VU will begin its campaign this week against defending champion City West Falcons. “The last two years the competition has gone seven or eight
teams deep and anyone can almost beat anyone on any given day,” Hills said. “You have got to get everything right and it all starts from next week when we play the reigning, back to back, premier who we have had an intense rivalry with over the last couple of years. “They will certainly be hard to beat. I would expect them to be right amongst it all year. “They are very well prepared and very confident group. It is going to be a significant challenge for us first up but it will give us a good indication of where we are at.”

We provide support and expertise in sprints, middle/long distance, jumps, throws and hurdle events.” Apart from being the first and only club local to the City of Wyndham, in return for annual membership fees, coaching and competition uniforms are provided free. Coaching also extends to fitness for other sports such as

footy, soccer, netball, basketball, tennis, cricket where basic athletic fitness is a key component. “We have something for everyone - children, non-English speaking, non-sporty, highly competitive, coaching and volunteering opportunities for parent volunteers and helpers. We aim to bring community together through sport,” Ms Hart says. The club operates Monday to Saturday. Call 0457 776 875 for more information.
West’s best for umpiring HMMM!... Why are these umpires so happy? Recently, the VAFA Umpiring Department has advertised for new recruits out in the West and the campaign has been quite successful. “We have seen some explayers and some umpires who have moved into the area join our ranks at our Western Training Campus because they want to stay in the sport and umpire football, enjoy a fantastic standard of footy, make some great money and not get abused or harassed in the process. This is a win/win for everybody. That makes us all happy,” Terry Gunn, VAFA umpires coach said.
The VAFA Umpiring Department is looking for new recruits. The VAFA is one of the largest and best managed AFL Football competitions in Australia, employing nearly 500 umpires to cover the 75 competing clubs located around Melbourne suburbs each weekend The VAFA, to its credit, has a no alcohol during game pol-
icy for spectators, a mandatory Working with Children Check for all its umpires and a successful zero tolerance to abuse and bad behaviour towards the umpires. This ensures best practice and a safe workplace for both players and umpires. The recently adopted VAFA Western Training Campus was an innovation to allow local western-based umpires to train and umpire locally. So why not give VAFA Umpiring a try? Go down to Soldiers Reserve, Werribee, at 6pm next Wednesday, or at least give Brian Goodman a call 0408 338 098 or email him on brian@ vafa.com.au.
