■ Two-year-old skater has become a global internet sensation...

Our new board wonder By ESTHER LAUAKI A TWO-YEAR-OLD Wyndham boy has become an overnight global sensation after video footage of him landing tricks on his skateboard went viral. Kahlei Stone-Kelly from Tarneit can only just walk and is still in a nappy but is capturing international attention for his remarkable skating skills. He comes from a family of skaters and took to the sport when he was just six months old. The video, which shows the tiny trickster in a nappy skating over curbs, down stairs and zipping around
Exclusive street corners, was posted on the Internet by his dad to show family back home in New Zealand. A series of videos that followed received thousands of views and the home phone hasn’t stopped ringing since. Dad Meka Kelly says Kahlei would skate all day if he was allowed. “It gets to the point where if I don’t take him out for a skate he will start to play up, that how much he loves it. I was just being a proud dad. I was sur-
prised to see him be good at it straight away so I recorded him for our family overseas. “We’ve had calls from people in Mexico, Washington, Argentina and even Japan. There have been a few skating contract offers but we’re taking it very slow. We just want to skate and do what we do best. We’ll start small and work our way up.” Worldwide fame hasn’t fazed the talented toddler who fuels up on juice boxes and loves skating with his seven older siblings. The family moved to Melbourne last year to chase their skating dreams
and have embraced the skating community with open arms. “We really wanted to get serious about skating and came to Australia to look for more opportunities here. We are so proud of all our kids, whether it’s skating, scooters or bikes; it’s just about getting them out there and letting them try everything. I’d encourage all parents and kids to be active and support your local parks,” Meka says. Mum, April Stone says she’s thrilled that all her children love to be active. “It gets them out of the house and keeps them active and out of trouble.
It’s making them ‘push play’ every day, make friends - that’s a good thing. Moving to Australia has been great because it’s opened up so many opportunities for our kids,” she said. She admits she has some reservations about her family’s favourite pastime. “As a mother I’m always concerned about their safety and that will never go away. This is what they love to do and I’m a big supporter of whatever they want to do.” Watch Kahlei at http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=yKGs7UXrZdw More reports, Page 4

Put an end to street speeding CARS or motorbikes driving in a suburban street should not sound like they are leaving the scene of a crime or that the green light has gone before the start of a Grand Prix. Increasingly in my street, and I see and hear about it in others, that is the case and for some reason it does not matter the time of day or night. It is dangerous, shows no respect for the residents and little for yourself and it is illegal if you go over 50 which is the case. I even witness it in the morning when young children are walking to school. If I had a dollar for every road law I see broken I would be very wealthy. Choose from speeding, texting (a Pplater nearly ran into me last week while texting) no hands free on the phone, failing to indicate, tailgating, smoking with kids in the car, drinking alcohol while driving, you name it, I see it and I am sure you do to. What can we do to make the roads safer? Your thoughts are welcome.

GREAT to hear of the plans for Werribee Plaza in the coming few years, with over $370 million to be spent on the complex. There will be a two level Myer, Target returns, a Gold Class Cinema, 120 new shops and a fresh food precinct. I think it will be sensational for the area but, and you knew that was coming – I do not like the name Pacific Werribee. The owners of the centre are the Pacific Group of Companies and they should be represented in the title but get rid of Werribee. The fact it is in Hoppers Crossing is irrelevant, the Werribee name stinks, in more ways than one. Any suggestions? THE Committee for Wyndham business breakfast featuring Steve Bracks as guest speaker on 19 February is sold out and a waiting list has been created. Well done to the organisers. Sports timing theft leaves kids in lurch By XAVIER SMERDON
Mel Utber and Noraine Singletary inspect the damage. 114070 Picture: DAMJAN JANESKI
THOUSANDS of Western Suburbs children could miss out on vital sports activities after thieves robbed a Werribee athletics club. The Werribee Little Athletics storage shed at the Victoria University athletics track was broken into late last month. President of the club, Mel Utber, told Star she entered the shed on Wednesday 29 January after Wyndham Council’s Australia Day celebrations at the track just days earlier to find one of the rooms vandalised.
Doors were ripped off cupboards and empty boxes were left lying throughout the room. Aside from a few walkie talkies, the only thing of value to the club taken was a silver briefcase containing timing equipment. The equipment allows them to record and process every runner’s time and it is lent to schools within the area any time they are holding their own athletic events. Special Events Coordinator at the club, Noraine Singletary, said the theft had rendered the club unable to hold running activities.
“Thousands of kids use this equipment. Approximately 60 to 70 schools rely on it,” Ms Singletary said. “And it’s not just Wyndham, we have schools in Yarraville, Newport and even Caroline Springs that need it.” The theft was reported to police and Ms Utber said the thieves would find no value in the stolen item. “It’s absolutely useless to anyone else but us, they don’t even have any of the cables they need to use it,” Ms Utber said. “It’s old equipment, so it’s not
even worth anything if they were to try and sell it. “Now we have to tell all the children that we can’t do our activities anymore. “We can’t do anything about it at the moment.” Ms Utber said she was “gutted” by the robbery and the club would be unable to afford new equipment to replace the stolen items, which would cost more than $11,000. Anyone with information regarding the incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
■ New name, new stores as the old plaza gets a new age facelift
Plaza’s $370 million expansion By XAVIER SMERDON WERRIBEE Plaza will receive a $370 million facelift, including a name change, the company that owns it has announced. Construction is set to begin next month and the redevelopment will expand the centre’s size by over 35,000 square metres with new fashion, fresh food, dining and entertainment precincts. It will also receive a change in name, with the plaza now to be known as Pacific Werribee, a name taken from its parent company, The Pacific Group of Companies.
Graham Terry from The Pacific Group of Companies said the centre would become premier retail destination in Melbourne’s West. “Pacific Werribee’s development will cement its position as the leading shopping centre in the heart of the West and is a major asset for the rapidly growing community in the surrounding suburbs,” Mr Terry said. “We are committed to building our flagship property into more than a shopping centre. We are becoming a destination that offers more lifestyle choices for the growing population and changing demographic in Melbourne’s West.”
But Wyndham residents were divided by the name change. Long-time Werribee resident and councillor Heather Marcus told Star while the redevelopment could only be seen as a positive, the new name did not make sense. “My first reaction is I find it difficult to comprehend,” Ms Marcus said. “People have known it as the Werribee Plaza for a long time and I think they may not associate Pacific Werribee with shopping.” But Katrina from Hoppers Crossing said she thought a new name would be good for the plaza.
“People think of an outdated shopping centre when they hear Werribee Plaza, so I think calling it something different will change its identity for the better,” Katrina said. Mark Ipton from Werribee however thought it was unlikely that Pacific Werribee would stick. “I’ll still be calling it Werribee Plaza because that’s what it’s been since the ’80s,” Mark said. “I don’t think people who live here like it when businesses try to pretend like they are too good for the area and try to change its identity. We’re very down to earth.”

Wyndham ranks as a hot spot for car thefts WYNDHAM has been ranked in the top 50 hot spots for car theft in the nation. The Cars Statistical Report 2012/13 revealed that the municipality was ranked 42 out of 50 areas in Australia for short term thefts in the 2012/13 financial year. During 2012/13 there was an average of 156 motor vehicle thefts per day in Australia. Wyndham was one of twelve Victorian local government areas to be mentioned in the report, with Brimbank ranked in the top 10 followed by Hume and Greater Geelong. The municipality experienced a slight drop in thefts, from 284 to 264
from the 2011/12 to 2012/13 periods. In terms of Wyndham’s population, the area’s short term theft rate was 1.48 per 1000 population - low enough to keep the municipality out of a second top 50 list. RACV general manager Insurance Paul Northey said vehicle theft remained a large problem, despite reduction resulting from better security features in cars. “Having your car broken into or stolen can cause major disruption to your work and personal life, so the better the security on your cars the harder the job will be for the car thief,” Mr Northey said.

SKATE boarding and big dreams run in the Stone-Kelly family’s blood. There are nine skaters in the family amateur skate team led by Tarneit father of eight, Meka Kelly. The team comprises his seven sons and one daughter, the eldest of them is 16 and the youngest is just two years old. The family moved to Melbourne’s Western Suburbs from New Zealand last year to pursue skating opportuni-
ties and captured worldwide attention this year after video footage of two-year-old toddler Kahlei Stone-Kelly went viral. Meka says all his children started skateboarding by the time they could walk. “They love it and it’s just what we do. We travel around to different skate parks every day and we’re there from about 4pm and sometimes we don’t leave until 10pm. “I would rather they come out and have a skate and have fun with their friends than
stay inside and watch TV and play on the PlayStation. Those things are dangerous. I want to encourage every kid to get a board and go on down to your local skate park and have fun.” The Stone-Kelly clan also played club rugby league together but transportation between all the children’s games became too difficult. “I would sit around with my cousins and brothers back home on the farm and we would dream talk about those skaters at the top of their game. No one back home

would have ever thought we were serious about it,” Meka says. “Where I grew up there were no skate parks. Back in New Zealand skating isn’t really supported. I lived in an area where a lot of skaters would go to the park to get away from their parents who were often drinking.” He says the whole family feels at home in Australia and aims to continue chasing their half-pipe dreams into the future.

Woman on 128 charges By XAVIER SMERDON A WERRIBEE woman has been charged with 128 offences by police. The 25-year-old woman was arrested at a house in Werribee last week and was scheduled to appear in Sunshine Magistrates’ Court. Bronwyn Holland was charged with offences including theft, robbery, theft of motor vehicle, theft from motor
vehicle, conduct endangering serious injury and dangerous driving. But she did not appear at the court hearing because she was withdrawing from drugs and the matter was adjourned until 4 March instead. The alleged incidents occurred in Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Altona Meadows, Caroline Springs, Rockbank, Taylors Lakes, Laverton North and Altona North.
Police had released an image of Ms Holland late last week after a warrant for her arrest had been issued. A Victoria Police statement claimed that she was wanted in relation to more than 30 separate incidents of theft. A Victoria Police spokesperson would not provide information on when the thefts allegedly occurred.

Mercy records baby boom By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM’S baby boom has shown no signs of slowing down with more than six new bundles of joy being born at Werribee Mercy Hospital every day last year. Figures released by the hospital show that there was an eight per cent increase in births in 2013 when compared to the previous year. In total 2394 babies were born at the hospital last year, and Mercy Health Executive Director of Health Services, Dr Linda Mellors, said extra funding had allowed them to in-
crease maternity services by 20 per cent this financial year. She said this was an exciting and much-needed development for the women and families of Wyndham. “We are extremely proud of our staff and the passion they show in helping families bring their babies into the world in a safe and nurturing environment,’’ Dr Mellors said. “Our main focus is to provide the best possible care to all our patients while our research clinicians and scientists continue to make breakthroughs in medical research and treatment.’’
There was also a 7.5 per cent increase in births at Mercy Health’s other hospital, the Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg, where almost 17 babies were being born every day last year. Dr Mellors said she was also looking forward to the new Maternity Group Practice model of care, which will be fully operational this month in the Family Birth Centre at Mercy Hospital for Women. Maternity Group Practice means that mothers will remain in the care of the same midwife throughout the course of their pregnancy.

TEAL will be the hot new nail polish colour of the season with ladies across the Western Suburbs encouraged to get their nails ‘coloured for a cause’. Australians are being invited to paint their nails in the colour to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer this month. Chemmart Pharmacy and Ovarian Cancer Australia have joined forces for Ovarian Cancer Awareness month (February), with special limited edition teal nail polish packs being sold in selected stores. “We are encouraging people to have their nails painted and purchase the Colour for a Cause for $6.99 with the full proceeds going to Ovarian Cancer Australia,” said Altona North
Chemmart Owner Denise Drew. “It’s a condition in which most people are unaware of the symptoms, so we are trying to promote the awareness of that,” Ms Drew said. Ms Drew and her staff have all painted their nails for the cause and are also offering instore manicures in return for a gold coin donation. Proceeds from the ‘Colour for a Cause’ polish packs and manicures will go to OCA to raise awareness of the symptoms, risks and impact of ovarian cancer and assist in the delivery of its awareness, support, advocacy and research programs. The team at Altona North will also continue their fundraising by hosting an ‘Afternoon Teal’ where they will bake
cupcakes to sell for a donation on Wednesday February 26, which is also Teal Ribbon Day. “We hope to see Australians come out in force during February wearing their teal nail polish to show their support for women suffering from ovarian cancer and raise much needed funds for OCA,” said Chemmart Pharmacy Executive Director Johnathon Layton. Daring men are also encouraged to add a splash of colour in support of the cause. The Colour for a Cause nail polish packs are now available until stocks last at the Altona North, Melton, Watergardens and Keilor Village stores. For more information visit www.ovariancancer.net.au

Here’s cheers to a long lunch ONE of Wyndham’s most popular events is on again next month. The World’s Longest Lunch will take place in the surrounds of the Shadowfax Winery, as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. The event will feature live jazz and a five course menu with matched wines. Councillor Marie Brittan said the event was the perfect way to show off one of Wyndham’s finest tourist attractions to family and friends. “The World’s Longest Lunch combines locally produced food and wine, ambience
and a great view to create one of our most popular events - it’s little wonder it regularly sells out,” Cr Brittan said. “With only 110 tickets available, it offers an intimate feel and is a great way to kick off the weekend.” Cr Brittan said the event was just one on a growing calendar of draw cards for Wyndham. “The World’s Longest Lunch is a highlight of Wyndham’s social calendar. With other events such as the Fromage a Trois, the State Rose and Garden Show and Live on the Lawn, Wyndham is fast developing a reputation as a great place for entertainment.
“It has also cemented our place on the culinary map, with the award winning Shadowfax Winery playing host and some fantastic local produce on display. “With such a great event on offer in our municipality, I encourage residents to get in fast and book their tickets before the World’s Longest Lunch sells out again.” The World’s Longest Lunch is on Friday 14 March. Loving the strength of Scarlett By YASEMIN TALAT WYNDHAM residents are being urged to be sweethearts this Valentine’s Day by giving a gift that will make a difference to someone else’s life. With Valentine’s Day only days away HeartKids Australia is calling on everyone to help fight childhood heart disease (CHD) by participating in the inaugural Sweetheart Day on 14 February, also known as International Childhood Heart Disease Awareness Day. Sweetheart Day aims to raise awareness of CHD and encourage donations to continue the national charity’s support, research, advocacy and awareness work. The Dickson family from Werribee know all too well the anguish of childhood heart dis-
ease. Their daughter Scarlett was born with three main congenital heart defects on 28 August 2012. Baby Scarlett was immediately transferred to The Children’s Hospital at only two hours old where she underwent her first open heart surgery at six days old. “It was complicated, just a rollercoaster,” said her mother Sasha. At six weeks old Scarlett again battled through another open heart surgery this time to repair her mitral valve. And when her mitral valve became severely narrowed Scarlett endured her third open heart surgery. “Instead of bringing her home she ended up on a machine for a week and a half,”

Mrs Dickson said. When doctors tried to remove the machine Scarlett went into cardiac arrest and was back on the machine for another five days. Days before Christmas, Mr and Mrs Dickson were told their new born girl had only a 10 per cent chance of making it to a year and only 10 per cent chance of coming off the machine successfully. But at five and a half months she was released from hospital. “We’ve seen a lot of her little friends pass on in hospital from congenital heart defects,” Mrs Dickson said. Katie takes on Febfast challenge By YASEMIN TALAT FEBRUARY is here and so is Febfast, the original charity movement which challenges participants to take a break from alcohol for the month while raising funds for youth addiction. And those getting involved can choose to kick other habits too like sugar, caffeine or digital media. Werribee Febfaster Katie Kirkwood has taken to the challenge and has vowed to take a break from sugar for 28 days. That means anything with over five grams of sugar per 100 grams is a no-go, as is most pasta, rice and breads. Ms Kirkwood said the challenge was a good way to continue on the path of improving her diet and said health was the main reason for signing up. “It’s encouraging me to look at the labels of everything and making myself more aware of what has sugar and what doesn’t and how much,” Ms Kirkwood said. “I’m fairly overweight and I’m trying to improve that and it’s a good cause, it’s good to raise money for youth addiction and help,” she said. Statistics on the Febfast page reveal that the average Australian is consuming 34 teaspoons of sugar every day, which for some is five times the six to nine teaspoons recommended. Ms Kirkwood hopes to raise $300 for Febfast which supply funds to partners, Youth Support and Advocacy Service and Family Drug Support. Her biggest challenge so far has been dining out but said she

Sam Wharton has been doing research into the Prime Minister’s Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI Cup. 114084
Footy history in the making WHILE she was in office almost every aspect of former Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s life and work was analysed on an almost daily basis. But a Tarneit student has used his summer holidays to research a different side of Australia’s first female Prime Minister, her identity as a western suburbs Australian Rules Football fan. Sport and Recreation Management student Sam Wharton has spent time researching the Prime Minister’s Cup - created under Julia Gillard for the winner between the Western Bulldogs and Greater Western Sydney football matches - as part of a Victoria University Summer School. The select group of students in the program each researched an aspect of history in elite sporting organisations including the Western Bulldogs and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. “I chose to research the Prime Minister’s Cup because I thought there was an interesting story there about what the two clubs have in common and about how Julia Gillard sees herself as a Bulldogs supporter who grew up in the western suburbs to become the first female PM,” Sam said. “As part of the project I’m asking questions about her ideas be-
hind implementing the cup, how she identifies with the western suburbs and how she got into football, which is all pretty exciting.” Sam said the opportunity to go behind the scenes of a professional sporting organisation and contribute to their legacy had been satisfying. “You leave a day at the Bulldogs Museum feeling like you’ve contributed something to the club and along the way experienced another pathway you might want to follow once you graduate,” he said. Victoria University sport historian and program manager Dr Rob Hess said students, who present their findings to academic staff and club personnel in the Victoria University Whitten Oval boardroom at the end of summer school, produced some fascinating findings. “There are always interesting snippets of history about the memorabilia associated with the club, the scandals or controversies that often erupted, and the amazing rivalries that particular players or teams had with other clubs,” Dr Hess said. “We collect all this miscellaneous research and add it to the club’s database: the club appreciates the knowledge transfer because it helps them build their history and the students love it because it’s such a real-life learning experience for them.”

Revamped club offers more WITH a new restaurant, revamped bars, renovated TAB (including the latest in technology) and alfresco entertainment areas, now is the time to visit The Italian Sports Club at 601 Heaths Rd, Werribee. “Our renovations are complete, so we invite our existing members and newcomers to drop in and check out the changes,” general manager Robert Marino says. “We’re a popular venue with more than 3500 members treating the club as their second home.”
The family-friendly club seats up to 200 people in the restaurant, while three separate function rooms - one for up to 300 people, one for 50 and the other for 30 - can accommodate everything from birthdays and weddings to corporate events. And there’s a playground to keep the kids entertained while parents relax in any of these areas and order from the Italian Sports Club’s delicious a la carte menu or the wide variety of set menus. Assistant manager Vincent San-
za says, “Our food is cooked from scratch, so meals are delivered fresh to diners’ plates. We pride ourselves on offering a better dining experience in a more relaxed atmosphere.” The club aims to exceed their customers’ expectations and one way they do this is by providing staff training every two months in areas such as coffee-making and wine tasting to deliver sound advice and service to their visitors. The Italian Sports Club began as the Italian Social Club in the
late 1960s. Today’s site opened on 10 August 1974 with members providing donations and holding fundraisers. Through their bocce competitions, membership flourished ... and now the venue has grown into an impressive flagship Wyndham location with something for visitors of all ages. The Italian Sports Club, 601 Heaths Rd, Werribee, opens noon2pm and 6-9pm daily. Inquiries: 9741 1225 or iscw. com.au

Wyncity gets the ball rolling on family entertainment with tenpin bowling, laser tag, bumper cars, glow mini golf, arcade machines, venturer simulator, Time Freak which is the first of its kind in Australia, a restaurant with traditional wood fired pizza and conference facilities. It is a totally inclusive complex for the whole family no matter what age. Each member of the family can be entertained and have fun.
The tenpin bowling lanes use the latest state-of-the art technology, which means visitors can play traditional bowling games or have team challenges tracked by the computer system. Players can also connect to Facebook and share their success with online friends via the on-lane iPads. Wyncity also has one of the greatest laser tag arenas in Australia. Wyncity is raising the curtain at its brand-new world-class bowling and entertainment centre that is opening in Point Cook after being around in Werribee for 30 years.
Offering the latest in tenpin bowling, world-class laserforce laser tag, bumper cars, pool tables, mini golf and an amazing range of arcade games, it is Australia’s newest venue for action-packed indoor recreation. WERRIBEE
FROM PAGE 1.
THIS property is classed as one of the finest properties in Werribee. THIS signature home built by Malishev has a Victorian inspired facade and charismatic gardens set on approximately 1120 square metres of land. It offers five bedrooms, a study, three bathrooms, a powder room, four toilets and multiple living areas including formal lounge, rumpus room and parents’ retreat. There is an impressive family room highlighted by a timber staircase and views of the extensive outdoor entertaining and pool areas. The extras are numerous and include quality timber kitchen, ducted heating, refrigerated air-conditioning, gas open fire place, spa, pool solar heating, French doors, ducted vacuum system and over-sized double garage. The agent believes few homes can match the style, quality, size and functional family design offered here. The home is located close to the Werribee River and directly opposite parkland.

Musician Darren Coggan set to inspire audiences in Peace Train.
On track for Cat “It’s good to go back to the well and hear the songs as they were originally written, on just an acoustic guitar and piano,” he said. Back in the ’70s, Cat Stevens was the ultimate rock star. Talented, charismatic, with a seemingly endless succession of beautiful melodies streaming from his imagination, the international singing star had everything. He sold more than 60 million albums, earned enough money to last several lifetimes, and enjoyed all the trappings of fame, but he wanted more out of life. So at the height of his career he shocked the world by taking his last bow. The music stopped and Cat Stevens was no more. Peace Train is a night of music and story-telling which will strike a chord deep inside the heart of anyone who longs for something more, a journey back in time, with songs that
still resonate today. Hear 24 hits sung with remarkable authenticity by one of Australia’s most exciting artists. From Moonshadow, to Morning Has Broken, Wild World, Father and Son, First Cut Is The Deepest, Hard Headed Woman and Peace Train, Darren Coggan traces the path of a man who never stoppedwondering about how to make the world a better place. Darren Coggan has toured extensively with stage shows Grease - The Mega Musical, Happy Days - The Arena Mega Musical, and Shout - The Musical Of The Wild One. He has appeared regularly on TV, including several guest appearances on Channel 7’s All Saints and currently is a presenter on Sydney Weekender. He has also been awarded two Golden Guitar awards at the CMAA Country Music Awards in 2001 and 2008.

SINCE its debut performance at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre in 2009, Darren Coggan’s Peace Train has gone on to inspire many others, playing to standing ovations in the most prestigious venues in Australia. It now returns for national encore performances around the country. This phase of this shows’ incredible journey sees Darren recreating Cat’s timeless, intimate songs as they were originally written - on an acoustic guitar and piano, seeking out the man in the music and telling the story behind the songs. “It’s been a wonderful journey touring Australia with this show and whilst it’s always a thrill to be surrounded on stage by great musicians, I have always envisaged presenting Peace Train in a more intimate setting,” said Coggan. “The singer-songwriter genre and particularly the music of Cat Stevens lends itself beautifully to an acoustic setting.

Giants toppled By ADEM SARICAOGLU
A “FREAKISH” play by Williamstown pitcher Josh Lee proved to be the difference between the Wolves and the Werribee Giants in Division Two Summer League baseball on Sunday. The visiting Wolves were up 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning at Presidents Park, but the Giants had the game-tying run at third base with pinch-runner Andrew Christou. On a squeeze bunt play with one out, Christou bolted for home and in any normal circumstances would have tied the game on the play. However, after diving for the ball and quickly scooping it to catcher Jason McDonald, Lee managed to pull off a miraculous defensive play just as Christou collided into McDonald. The Wolves then secured victory with a quick strikeout - handing the Giants their seventh loss for the season. “It was a freakish play, really,” Werribee coach Phil Balzer said shortly afterward. “The run should’ve scored, which would’ve tied the game and forced it into extra innings or given us the chance to score the winning run in that inning. “So things didn’t go our way but when you strike out 14 times, you’re not really giving yourself much of a chance.” In what proved a tight tussle from start to finish, the fourth-placed Giants were able to match it with the ladder-leading Wolves. However, it was those 14 strike-
Werribee’s Simon Riches heads for first base against Williamstown on Sunday. 114350 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT outs that ultimately cost Werribee its 11th victory, according to Balzer. “That’s just way too many (strikeouts) and that didn’t give us enough opportunities to put the ball in play and put some pressure on Williamstown to make those plays,” Balzer said.
“We struck out five of their guys, so if we allow only five strikeouts ourselves then that’s nine more balls we put in play, and you expect some of those to be hits. “That’d give us more scoring opportunities, so that was the big difference in the game.”
With just two more regular season games to come before the finals series kicks off in March, Werribee remains an outside chance of finishing second on the table. This Sunday the Giants will travel to take on St Kilda before hosting Springvale in a game that could ultimately decide second spot.
Five clubs are set for top comp By ADEM SARICAOGLU FIVE clubs from Melbourne’s West have been offered licences to join the new National Premier Leagues Victoria competition. Former Victorian Premier League giants Melbourne Knights and Green Gully will join State League One clubs St Albans, Sunshine George Cross and Werribee City - who have all been invited to join the new league set to be rolled out for the upcoming season. Altona Magic and Western Suburbs are the two notable former SL1 clubs that have not been offered an NPL licence. Last week Football Federation Victoria announced the 30 clubs and entities that will most likely form the Victorian NPL competition. Each club is now required to confirm their participation by Wednesday next week. The FFV has not yet released details on the structure of the league, but an announcement is expected to be made in coming days. The final fixture has been slated for a 26 February release. Dean shines for Doggies FOOTSCRAY returned to its winnings ways with a smashing of Dandenong in the Victorian Premier Cricket on the weekend. Bulldogs’ captain Dean Russ ensured he remained popular with his team-mates after he won the toss and had no hesitation batting first in the 40 degree heat on day one. Footscray went on to dominate the Dandenong bowlers for the next 90 overs as the runs came thick and fast. Travis Dean was outstanding after coming in at first drop, making 119 from 209 balls. The knock is also his first century of the season and included 15 boundaries. Dean was well supported by gun Victorian all-rounder John Hastings who again proved how dangerous he can be at Premier Cricket level. Coming in at number four, Hastings made 87 off just 128 balls in an innings which included seven fours and three sixes. A well-made 44 from Anthony Barton and 26 from Shanuka Dissanayake lifted the total to 7/328 after the completion of 90 overs. In reply, Footscray had no trouble ripping through the Dandenong batting lineup. Led by opening pair Jake Haberfield and Hamish Winter-Irving, the Bulldogs bowled the batting side out for 126 in the 50th over on Sunday. A BRILLIANT 106 not out from Tim O’Brien moved Werribee into a strong position after day one of its clash against Western Suburbs rival Williamstown. Following two early wickets, O’Brien came to the crease with the Tigers at 2/38. From there the gun middle order batsman took control of the match and sent the Seagulls’ bowlers to all parts of Chirnside Park. O’Brien was well supported by Michael Freeman who also chipped in with 40 while David Wolfe made 31. When day two resumes Williamstown will need to make 239 to claim the win. After a slow start to the 2013/14 season, the Seagulls have rebounded well through the middle part of the season and are hunting their third successive win in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. DEFENDING champions City West Falcons will kick off their Victorian Netball League title defence this week. The Falcons enter the 2014 season with another strong line-up despite the retirement of last year’s co-captain Christie Barnes. She will be replaced in the leadership role by Kathleen Knott who is returning from a knee injury which hampered her 2013 season. Knott, who will share the captaincy duties with Casey Price, will slot into the goals and play alongside her sister Julia. There won’t be any time to settle into the new season for City West which will take on last year’s third placed team VU Western Lightning in round one.
Werribee City has been invited to join the NPLV for the 2014 season. 106166 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT acknowledged the clubs’ efforts in applying for a spot in the new league after what has been a troubled six months for the federation and the local game. “FFV recognises the tremendous level of effort and resources
required to produce an NPL submission,” Monteleone said. “All applicants should be congratulated for their dedication in submitting an application. I would like to also thank the assessment panel for its hard work reviewing all
37 applications. “The NPL will have a positive impact on players, coaches and club development across all of Victoria.” Liam Bentley has been appointed Head of NPL Victoria.
ALTONA resident and Australian Twenty20 spinner James Muirhead has re-signed with the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers for the next four seasons. Having made his first-class debut as a rookie with the Bushrangers last summer, Muirhead was upgraded to a full contract this season and has since made his mark in the international arena during the recent Twenty20 series against England. The 20-year-old, who claimed careerbest figures of 6-181 for a Cricket Australia Invitational XI against England at the SCG in November, said he was happy to put pen to paper with Victoria. “I feel like Victoria is the best environment for me to develop my cricket,” Muirhead said.

On the back of Australia’s Ashes dominance, local clubs are preparing for an increase in playing numbers next season. 114333 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI
Fast rising West By LIAM TWOMEY IT WILL go down as a golden summer in Australian Cricket. On the back of a 5-0 Ashes whitewash and beltings in the one day and Twenty20 series, Australia is back to its winning ways. But it is not just at the top level where plans for domination are hatched. Cricket Victoria regional manager for the West Metro region, Duncan Harrison also has big goals for the future. Working in one of the state’s fasting growing regions, Harrison has seen junior cricket in the West flourish in recent times. Not surprisingly, he is hoping the trend continues. “We want to be the biggest participation region, we want to have the strongest standards and the best coaches. We want cricket in the West to be powerful,” Harrison said. “We want everyone looking over at us in envy. “We have got a bit of work to do but we are making progress. We think we are lifting the standard of cricket in the West and hopefully that keeps going and keeps growing.” According to Harrison, one of the keys to building cricket in the region has centred on helping juniors transition from the introductory In2Cricket program to more structured competitions. Where youngsters who weren’t
ready to make the jump may have previously been lost to the game, they are now staying in cricket for longer through the T20 Blast program. Western Region Junior Cricket Association president Chris Hatzistavrou has seen first-hand the progress junior cricket has made in recent seasons. He believes another key to growing the game has been bringing the West’s separately run junior competitions under one banner. “We have got a lot more organised now,” Hatzistavrou said. “We used to have three or four junior associations and we are now one big association. We have got all the administrators on board. We have got a super group of people that are all focused on junior cricket. “The Williamstown Competition and the old West Metro merged about four years ago and we are in our fifth season now. Prior to that, we had the old Footscray Competition and the old Sunshine Competition and the Churches Competition that merged to create the Western Region. “We have got all the associations together as one so when we have meetings ... all the information is going out to all the people at the same time. “Once you make it easier for people to run a competition, it is then easier for people to run a club.”
While participation at junior level heads in the right direction, there is also an increased emphasis on helping top talent climb the ladder. The West’s premier cricket club, Footscray Edgewater launched its Bulldogs Academy last year and is already working with the region’s elite juniors. During the Christmas break, the academy organised a tour of Tasmania while there is also a tour of Sri Lanka planned for the winter. “I think traditionally, we have struggled in our pathway programs in the early age groups against the private school sector,” Harrison said. “Maribyrnong College has been a good one to come in and plug that gap as well and it’s great for us to have a sports school. “The Bulldogs Academy has created opportunities for a whole lot more cricketers to taste a lot more serious cricket. “There is going to be some sensational opportunities for cricketers growing up in the Western Suburbs over the next five or 10 years.” It isn’t just junior boys’ cricket where cricket in the West is expected to keep growing. The junior girls’ game is also expanding quickly after the successful launch of the Molly Strano Cup. “We have launched a program
aimed at girls playing against girls and we have probably got about 40-50 players playing regularly,” Harrison said. “We played a game at the MCG against Southern Districts and our girls won that game. It was a curtain raiser to the Stars and the Strikers (Big Bash League). That is an area that we are certainly looking at and want to develop over the next few years.” After back-to-back Ashes series and the success of the third Big Bash League, clubs are also preparing for an increase in numbers next season. “The Ashes series this year has been a story of success and mums and dads want to get their kids on board,” Hatzistavrou said. “I run a Milo program myself which is for the little tackers. I have only got a small group of about 30 and I have had a couple of phone calls even this week inquiring about it. “If I have a small group and I am getting a couple of phone calls then I’m sure others are too. I don’t normally get calls at this time of the year. It is normally tailing off. “It is obvious that the interest is there which has been generated through the Ashes Series and the Big Bash as well. It might be only a one or two per cent increase but we will probably start to feel that again next year.”

JUST on five thousand brave Bulldogs supporters turned up to Whitten Oval for the annual family day. I say brave because it was a dreadful day with the temperature hitting 40degrees and then a very strong southerly hit which did drop the temperature but also had everyone on edge hoping that the tents would not get blown away. President Peter Gordon told the diehards that he is pumped for the season while senior coach Brendan McCartney was his usual straight down the line tell it like it is self saying he wants the team to improve on last year. The club has a unique game coming up on 13 March at Whitten Oval when the Western Bulldogs will take on the Footscray Bulldogs around 5pm. Work will start soon on opposition change rooms and coaches boxes for the VFL games. The Bulldogs Season Launch/ Hall of Fame night on 12 March will see Brad Johnson inducted into the Hall of Fame and maybe one or two others. “Johnno” is most deserving to be in that upper echelon of Bulldogs. His statistics alone tell a story, but when you look at the boy from Hoppers Crossing who grew up barracking for the red white and blue and then plays 364 games there is no argument. It is a boy’s own adventure, and I am sure his family will be there to support him as they did so well throughout his career. I have no inside information at all, but it would be the icing on the cake if he went into the Hall of Fame with his great mate Rohan Smith who also deserves that accolade. They were inseparable during their playing days and, in fact, I got great comedic mileage at functions when interviewing either one. They played along as you would expect from a couple of genuinely great blokes. Some upcoming events and news. Hoppers Crossing Junior Netball Association began its season earlier this month and is looking for players in all grades from under 11 through to Under 21s. Games are held on Saturday mornings at Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing and you can contact Lisa Caithness for more details on 0413 012 376. The Yarraville Club Cricket Club has the annual Ladies Pink Day on Saturday 22 February from 4pm at Hansen Reserve. Cost is $40 which includes entrance, door prizes, raffle tickets, food, bubbly and entertainment. Contact Cathie Strachan on 0418 594 110 for bookings. Rotary’s annual Jalna Big Bay Swim is on Sunday 23 February from Port Melbourne to Williamstown. The 3.2km swim actually is that big that the shipping channel gets closed down for an hour while the race takes place. Marathon swimmer Chloe McCardel is the ambassador for the swim and will compete again and past winners include Tammy van Wisse, Rob Woodhouse and Sam Shepherd. Spectators can enjoy live music and the good food and beverages in Commonwealth Reserve in Williamstown next to the finishing point Pelican’s Landing restaurant on the pier. Check out the website bigbayswim.com.au My great mate Tony Fox has alerted me to the ANBY 50th year reunion coming up in 2017. Yes, they are getting in early but for good reason as many clubs have found that leaving it to the last minute is disastrous. They have set up a Facebook page as the contact point for those who were involved in the club. I have run into several people already who are excited by the event. Head to the Altona North Brooklyn Sports Club Facebook page and let them know of your interest. They already have over a hundred involved, and it is very early days. Any club that was founded in the Guiding Star Hotel will have a ripping reunion celebration.

THE 2014 season will see the dawn of a new era at the Hoppers Crossing Football Club. From the Warriors’ starting 18 last year, only four are still playing at Hogans Rd. But with a host of impressive youngsters coming through the club’s under 18 program, new coach Steve Kretiuk isn’t panicking. In fact, he is looking forward to seeing the next generation of Warriors strut their stuff. “We didn’t want to recruit players to take the places of our young kids coming through,” Kretiuk said. “That group of young kids that has come through in the last four or five years and has been successful; we need to promote them and give them game time. “That is where our success is going to come from. It isn’t going to come from going and spending big dollars and buying players from other leagues or other clubs. We want to grow our talent from within and there is a lot of talent there.” Hoppers Crossing will kick off its 2014 campaign under lights at Chirnside Park against Western Region Football League newcomers Werribee Districts. The Warriors will also play practice games in the lead-up to round one against Darley and Grovedale. While it will be a younger Hoppers Crossing side taking the field, they will have some quality experience in ruck recruit Wayde Skipper.
The former Western Bulldog signed at the Warriors last year and hasn’t put a foot wrong, according to his coach. “He has been outstanding,” Kretiuk said. “His knowledge and experience and obviously his ability as well – it is great to have him at the club. “He is a really good trainer, and he sets high levels for everyone else. He doesn’t like coming second or third, he hates getting beaten and that is the type of guy and the type of attitude we want to have around the footy club.” After finishing sixth on the division one ladder last season, Kretiuk is looking for improvements both on and off the field this year. He said the club wanted to strengthen its culture and would have a zero tolerance policy to anyone who goes outside that. “We have done a total cleanout and we have done it for a good reason,” Kretiuk said. “I think even last year, I wasn’t a part of the squad, but I do go and watch local footy as much as I can. There wasn’t a lot of positive talk about the club. “In a short amount of time, people are starting to talk really positively about the club again and the structures we have got in place. That is what we want to hear. “We want to be a good club to be around. We have zero tolerance for anyone that is going to stuff up. They will be straight out the door.”

Cats poised to secure vital VTCA win By ADEM SARICAOGLU HOPPERS Crossing is in the box seat to score a vital win in Senior Division Turf Cricket this Saturday. Led by Sanka Abeyruwan, who claimed five wickets over the weekend, the Cats managed to restrict visiting Old Mentonians to 177 after being forced to bowl in the heat at Hogans Road Reserve. The job was done after 66.4 overs with Abeyruwan doing all the damage, ripping through the middle and lower Old Mentonians order after the visitors started well to reach three figures for the loss of just two wickets. Hoppers Crossing captain-coach Darrel Brown, who snared two wickets of his own on Saturday, said he was pleased with his side’s bowling efforts, but did admit the final total could have been lower had catches been held in the field. “It could’ve been less and one guy did drop an easy catch at midon,” Brown explained. “But at the end of the day in that hot weather, they were two down for 90-odd at tea and to come out and keep them to 177 was pretty good.” The Cats had 13 overs in the middle late in the day’s play and were able to reach 1/28 by stumps. Mathematically, ninth-placed Hoppers Crossing could still sneak into the top four, but on the flipside the Cats are not yet safe from relegation, either. A win this weekend, however, would at least keep them in the Se-

Early honours for Jet Liam By ADEM SARICAOGLU GUN Tarneit footballer Liam McMahon has been honoured as this year’s Victoria University Nathan Prince Scholarship recipient. The 17-year-old Western Jet and Hoppers Crossing junior is the third recipient of the scholarship, named in the memory of former Jet Nathan Prince, who tragically died following an on-field incident in 2011. McMahon said he was honoured to receive the scholarship. “It’s a privilege to have an award that’s held in such high regard around the football club,” McMahon said. “I just hope to fulfil it in the same values that I show around the football club and respect the award for what it is.” Coming into his top-age year with the Jets, McMahon has enrolled in a clinical science course within the College of Sport and Exercise Science at Victoria University. After playing 13 games as a bottomager with the Jets in 2013, McMahon is keen to make a big impression this year. His best performance of the season came against the Calder Cannons in the finals series last September, where McMahon gathered 18 disposals and six marks. While a groin injury has hampered his pre-season preparation, McMahon
Western Jet Liam McMahon received this year’s Nathan Prince Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT Scholarship. 114302 said he hopes to establish himself as a regular starter in the Jets’ line-up this year. “After getting on the list and playing 13 games last year I’m just looking forward to hopefully playing as many games as I can this year and developing my game to get as far as I can into next year,” McMahon said.
“I’d definitely love to make the highest level but if not, I’m definitely keen to push on for VFL and whatever opportunity that arises at a higher level, I’m going to take it with both hands.” With practice matches set to begin in coming weeks, the Jets will commence their 2014 TAC Cup campaign against Calder in mid-March.

West’s best for umpiring HMMM!... Why are these umpires so happy? Recently, the VAFA Umpiring Department has advertised for new recruits out in the West and the campaign has been quite successful. “We have seen some explayers and some umpires who have moved into the area join our ranks at our Western Training Campus because they want to stay in the sport and umpire football, enjoy a fantastic standard of footy, make some great money and not get abused or harassed in the process. This is a win/win for everybody. That makes us all happy,” Terry Gunn, VAFA umpires coach said.
The VAFA Umpiring Department is looking for new recruits. The VAFA is one of the largest and best managed AFL Football competitions in Australia, employing nearly 500 umpires to cover the 75 competing clubs located around Melbourne suburbs each weekend The VAFA, to its credit, has a no alcohol during game pol-
icy for spectators, a mandatory Working with Children Check for all its umpires and a successful zero tolerance to abuse and bad behaviour towards the umpires. This ensures best practice and a safe workplace for both players and umpires. The recently adopted VAFA Western Training Campus was an innovation to allow local western-based umpires to train and umpire locally. So why not give VAFA Umpiring a try? Go down to Soldiers Reserve, Werribee, at 6pm next Wednesday, or at least give Brian Goodman a call 0408 338 098 or email him on brian@ vafa.com.au.
