What a sweetheart At just two days old, Yve underwent her first heart procedure; and more surgery when she was one year old. “We were basically in hospital for about three months and we didn’t know if we were going to bring her home,” Bea said. In the early days, Yve had 12 specialists looking after her - a cardiologist, nutritionist, speech therapist, respatorist, neurologist, ENT specialist and gastronomist - and a paediatrician who they appointed to ‘project manage’ Yve’s doctors. Yve’s vocal cords are permanently damaged which means she can’t go swimming and she will require medi-
cal support for her entire life, including another heart operation in her teens. Although life has been a rollercoaster for the family, Yve is now an energetic cheeky two-year-old. “We’re really, really lucky ... she’s pretty special,” Bea said, This Valentine’s Day HeartKids is calling on everyone to be a sweetheart and help fight childhood heart disease. BEFORE two-year old Yve Rumble was born her parents knew she would be forced to fight for her life. Yve’s mum Bea Tomlin and dad Paul were strongly advised to terminate the pregnancy at 20 weeks. “The opening words (from the doctors) were ‘your child was going to die’,” Bea said. Yve would be born with a hole in the heart, an under-developed left side of the heart and a condition which would prevent her heart from pumping enough blood to supply oxygen to the body. On 1 April 2011, the Williamstown couple decided against their doctor’s
strong advice to terminate and opted to give their first child a chance at life. They were advised if the baby’s chromosomes weren’t right she would not survive. “We had some more tests for us to make a decision and decided that we were going to give her a chance and see if she could get through it,” Bea said. Childhood heart disease is the biggest cause of death and hospitalisation in children under one year old, with six babies born with a heart defect in Australia every day. “The hardest thing was no one could tell us what her quality of life could be,” Bea said.

By ESTHER LAUAKI A TWO-YEAR-OLD wonder kid of the West has become an overnight global sensation after video footage of him landing tricks on his skateboard went viral. Kahlei Stone-Kelly from Tarneit can only just walk and is still in a nappy but is capturing international attention for his remarkable skating skills. He comes from a family of skaters and took to the sport when he was just six months old. The video, which shows the tiny trickster in a nappy skating over kerbs, down stairs and zipping around street corners, was posted on the internet by his dad to show family back home in New Zealand. A series of videos that followed received thousands of views and the home phone hasn’t stopped ringing since. Dad Meka Kelly says Kahlei would skate all day if he was allowed. “It gets to the point where if I don’t take him out for a skate he will start to play up, that’s how much he loves it. I was just being a proud dad. I was surprised to see him be good at it straight away so I recorded him for our family overseas. “We’ve had calls from people in Mexico, Washington, Argentina and even Japan. There have been a few skating contract offers but we’re taking it very slow. We just want to skate and do what we do best. We’ll start small and work our way up.” Worldwide fame hasn’t fazed the talented toddler who fuels up on juice boxes and loves skating with his seven older siblings.
Kahlei Stone-Kelly has become an internet sensation. 114066 The family moved to Melbourne last year to chase their skating dreams and have embraced the skating community with open arms. “We really wanted to get serious about skating and came to Australia to look for more opportunities here. We are so proud of all our kids, whether it’s skating, scooters or bikes; it’s just about getting them out there and letting them try everything. I’d encourage all parents and
kids to be active and support your local parks,” Meka says. Mum, April Stone says she’s thrilled that all her children love to be active. “It gets them out of the house and keeps them active and out of trouble. It’s making them ‘push play’ every day, make friends - that’s a good thing. Moving to Australia has been great because it’s opened up so
Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI many opportunities for our kids,” she said. She admits she has some reservations about her family’s favourite pastime. “As a mother I’m always concerned about their safety and that will never go away. This is what they love to do and I’m a big supporter of whatever they want to do.” You can watch Kahlei in action at http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=yKGs7UXrZdw

Outsourcing protest By NICOLE VALICEK ANGRY parents will converge on the first 2014 meeting of Hobsons Bay City Council tonight in protest against its proposed plan to outsource its two childcare centres. Australian Services Union (ASU) Women’s Officer Jane Karslake said the decision by Hobsons Bay Council to contract out Altona North and Altona Meadows Children’s Centre is “intended solely on cutting the wages of childcare workers”. Ms Karslake said the ASU along with The Save Altona North (ANNCC) and Altona Meadows
(AMCC) parents’ group, want the council to reverse its decision. “The group passionately supports the maintenance of existing services, which provide the centres with a secure workforce, helping offer better learning and development to their children.” She said the ASU will join staff and parents outside the council chambers to rally in protest of the decision which will be revisited during the council’s ordinary meeting tonight. “We call on Hobsons Bay Council to reverse a decision that will
clearly have an adverse effect on childcare employees in the area and the community as a whole.” Parents have called for the release of the confidential report on which the decision was based and for an independent feasibility study on the future of the only two remaining council run centres in the municipality. Ms Karslake said plans to contract out work within the two centres will leave employees without jobs and a community unsure of the level of service that will be provided for childcare in the area.
“This is an attack on our members’ jobs and pay equity in general,” she said. But Hobsons Bay Mayor Mayor Sandra Wilson said the decision was well-founded. “We have taken into account a number of community, legal and financial considerations keeping in mind the interest of the whole community of Hobsons Bay,” she said. “New National Quality Standards now ensure quality of care for children, regardless of who delivers the service.”
Tourism fest for the West By CHARLENE MACAULAY COUNCILS across the West want to make the region the next big tourist attraction. Western Melbourne Tourism, a regional cooperative funded with support from the Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham, Melton, Brimbank and Moonee Valley councils, will host a day-long forum next week in a bid to promote the West as a whole. Tourism Fest in the West will include keynote speakers Western Melbourne Tourism Patron Steve Bracks, destination marketing guru Simon McArthur, Professor Alison Morrison from Victoria University, as well as a range of other tourism industry leaders. “There is much about the West side of Melbourne that is rapidly changing and many Melburnians and visitors from further afield are appreciating more and more what the West has to offer,” Mr Bracks said. “New food, new cultural communities, new arts venues and events - there is a lot to love about Melbourne’s West. There is a new awakening and the region needs to prepare and market itself for increasing numbers of visitors.” Western Melbourne Tourism Executive Officer Richard Ponsford said the demographic of the West had rapidly changed, which has in turn changed the vibe and opportunities in the West. “There’s a lot more people visiting the West. It’s a whole-sector opportunity and we want to capture that and let everyone know in the tourism industry what’s happening in the West,” Mr Ponsford said. “The traditional perception of the West is very industrial, flat and boring, but it’s actually full of change and new things. The whole image and brand of the West needs to be re-shaped. “From a tourism promotion point of view, it’s about capturing all the stuff that’s happening and making it really accessible for people, such as maps and event lists and all that sort of stuff.” Tourism Fest in the West will be held on 18 February. Giving homes a green edge Owner of Les Fleurs florist in Altona Robyn Hewitt said the rose is the flower of love. 113963

Time to spark a great romance? By NICOLE VALICEK NOTHING says ‘I love you’ like the red rose. Owner of Les Fleurs florist in Altona Robyn Hewitt said while there is a huge selection of flowers to express love this Valentine’s Day there is one that strikes the biggest love chord.
“It’s always been the red rose. It’s the symbol of love,” she said. Florists around the municipality are gearing-up for one of the biggest days of the year- Valentine’s Day. “It will be busy, especially falling on a Friday ... everyone’s been paid and they like to impress their partners at work,” she said. Florist Jess Lubberink from A
Flower Affair in Newport said dozens and dozens of red roses will be sold and delivered on Friday. “A red rose captures romance and it’s the thoughtfulness behind it,” she said. Ms Lubberink said the classic red rose is most popular, but today people are also opting for pink, yellow and white varieties and
other flowers like the lily. “A man should buy a woman flowers all year round not just Valentine’s Day,” she laughed. “But these days people are going towards more different colours of roses and a mixture of other flowers.” People should order early so their Valentines don’t miss out, she said.
SAVING money while saving the environment is the theme of Hobsons Bay City Council’s first Sustainable Homes Expo. Chair of Sustainable Environment Advisory Group (SEAG), Cr Angela Altair said the main focus of the expo was to showcase products and services that could help residents reduce their utility bills and energy use. “The expo will offer ideas for living a life that is both environmentally and financially sustainable,” Cr Altair said. The expo will start at 10am on Sunday, 23 February, with a number of events. Experts who will be on hand to talk through products and services showcase leading solutions to the ecological and social challenges we face. Probus anniversary
1119034-PB07-14
By NICOLE VALICEK THE ALTONA Ladies Probus Club is calling on past members to help celebrate their 25th birthday. The club will celebrate its 25th anniversary at the Altona RSL Club on 27 March and is inviting its former members to the party. Pat Marks joined the club in 1989 and is one of its longest serving members. “I retired from work and it was something I thought I’d like to join and it’s been good, it’s been extra good,” she said. The 85-year-old said she enjoys the companionship and friendship the club provides. “There are a few ladies I’ve known for over 20 years... they’re good friendships and always will be.” Club secretary Merle Phillips said the organisation is for woman who have retired from their profession and want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Ms Phillips remembers being put on a wait list to join the club that had in excess of 100 members in 1998. And while the club is down to 60 members Ms Phillips said it will continue to play an important role in the community. “Probus stands for professional business people, once they’ve retired from work they need something else to keep them occupied to keep the mind ticking over and that’s the whole idea of it.” She said the club meets at least once a month for fellowship and to hear guest speak-

Bad timing theft By XAVIER SMERDON THOUSANDS of Western Suburbs children could miss out on vital sports activities after thieves robbed a Werribee athletics club. The Werribee Little Athletics storage shed at the Victoria University athletics track was broken into late last month. President of the club, Mel Utber, told Star she entered the shed on Wednesday 29 January after Wyndham Council’s Australia Day celebrations at the track just days earlier to find one of the rooms vandalised. Doors were ripped off cupboards and empty boxes were left lying throughout the room. Aside from a few walkie talkies, the only thing of value to the club taken was a silver
briefcase containing timing equipment. The equipment allows them to record and process every runner’s time and it is lent to schools within the area any time they are holding their own athletic events. Special Events co-ordinator at the club, Noraine Singletary, said the theft had rendered the club unable to hold running activities. “Thousands of kids use this equipment. Approximately 60 to 70 schools rely on it,” Ms Singletary said. “And it’s not just Wyndham, we have schools in Yarraville, Newport and even Caroline Springs that need it.” The theft was reported to police and Ms Utber said the thieves would find no value in
the stolen item. “It’s absolutely useless to anyone else but us, they don’t even have any of the cables they need to use it,” Ms Utber said. “It’s old equipment, so it’s not even worth anything if they were to try and sell it. “Now we have to tell all the children that we can’t do our activities anymore. “We can’t do anything about it at the moment.” Ms Utber said she was “gutted” by the robbery and the club would be unable to afford new equipment to replace the stolen items, which would cost more than $11,000. Anyone with information regarding the incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Sarah-Jane Kernaghan started adult acting class last year. 114085 Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI
New routine for Sarah-Jane By NICOLE VALICEK AN ELITE gymnast who decided to swap routines for acting class has discovered her ultimate dream. Sarah-Jane Kernaghan was a Victorian Champion in gymnastics during her youth which required a training regime of 30 hours a week. In her mid-20s the shy Newport resident decided to pursue her creative side and start acting class. “I wanted to be in those roles and experiencing those different situations, expressing yourself through emotions is an
amazing feeling,” she said. Last year the 31-year-old joined Adam Turnbull’s Adult Acting Class and as a result had her first casting for a Target television commercial. “When I started Adam’s class through his connection I got an audition with an agent, after the audition I was accepted to the agency,” she said. “I’m being exposed to the industry and people that do cast which I haven’t had experience before. “It was very exciting because it is a very hard industry.” Sarah-Jane said she will continue Adam’s class but dis-
covered her ultimate passion for directing after participating in a RMIT student film last year. “I wanted to be making the decision and calls, that’s more the role I’m after. “You get to be in charge of whole creative process and express the things you’re passionate about.” Adam Turnbull Acting runs an Adult Class in Williamstown on Saturdays and Altona Meadows on Monday. It caters for beginners to advanced. For more information phone Adam on 0419 593 257.

Altona North resident Georgie Mitchell is participating in FebFast and will abstain from Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI alcohol for a whole month. 114082
ALTONA North resident Georgie Mitchell enjoys having an alcoholic beverage and that’s one of the reasons she is determined to stay dry this month. The 47-year-old is participating in FebFast - a charity movement which challenges its participants to take a 28 day break from alcohol, sugar, caffeine or technology to raise funds for youth addiction. Georgie is the Rear Commodore of the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club and organises all of the social events. She said the club has quite a strong drinking culture, so she is trying to bring about change and encourage a healthier rela-
tionship with alcohol throughout the club. “I thought it would be a great challenge and great example to others,” she said. “We don’t encourage alcohol, but like any other sporting club alcohol is a huge part of it so it’s showing other members you can still have a good time and buy drinks at the bar without consuming alcohol when events are on.” According to new research from FebFast “bad habits are becoming addictions, impacting on our health and costing the average Australian close to $4000 a year”. Drinking too much alcohol was the habit of most concern to Australian society.
Georgie admits having a beer or wine every night when she gets home from work is “normal”. “It is a lifelong habit to reach for a cold beer, going forward the challenge is going to be running so many events at the yacht club (and abstaining from alcohol).” Georgie said the challenge will be difficult but she is motivated to succeed by her work mates and the cause. “I’m not expecting it but I’m hoping old habits will be broken and it’s not an automatic thing (to reach for a drink). A touch of teal for your nails By YASEMIN TALAT TEAL will be the hot new nail polish colour of the season with ladies across the Western Suburbs encouraged to get their nails ‘coloured for a cause’. Australians are being invited to paint their nails in the colour to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer this month. Chemmart Pharmacy and Ovarian Cancer Australia have joined forces for Ovarian Cancer Awareness month (February), with special limited edition teal nail polish packs being sold in selected stores. “We are encouraging people to have their nails painted and purchase the Colour for a Cause for $6.99 with the full proceeds going to Ovarian Cancer Australia,” said Altona North
Chemmart Owner Denise Drew. “It’s a condition in which most people are unaware of the symptoms, so we are trying to promote the awareness of that,” Ms Drew said. Ms Drew and her staff have all painted their nails for the cause and are also offering instore manicures in return for a gold coin donation. Proceeds from the ‘Colour for a Cause’ polish packs and manicures will go to OCA to raise awareness of the symptoms, risks and impact of ovarian cancer and assist in the delivery of its awareness, support, advocacy and research programs. The team at Altona North will also continue their fundraising by hosting an ‘After-
noon Teal’ where they will bake cupcakes to sell for a donation on Wednesday February 26, which is also Teal Ribbon Day. “We hope to see Australians come out in force during February wearing their teal nail polish to show their support for women suffering from ovarian cancer and raise much needed funds for OCA,” said Chemmart Pharmacy Executive Director Johnathon Layton. Daring men are also encouraged to add a splash of colour in support of the cause. The Colour for a Cause nail polish packs are now available until stocks last at the Altona North, Melton, Watergardens and Keilor Village stores. For more information visit www.ovariancancer.net.au

Bev cares with local support By NICOLE VALICEK LOCAL woman Bev, who gives up part of her week to look after her disabled sister, said she could not have done it without the help of a local support group. Bev has cared for her sister Marl, who is legally blind in both eyes for about three years, and became a part-time carer more than a year ago when Marl’s husband passed away. By this time Marl required oxygen 24-hours a day. Bev said her role as sharedcarer includes taking Marl to hospital and doctor appointments, helping with shopping and cooking. The caring sister said she enjoys caring for Marl and feels a strong sense of altruism for her and others. “I do not do this to feel good, it’s something I need to do with my life,” she said. “I really feel strongly about altruism because I’m like that with others.” But despite this Bev said it was important to have support as a carer and she attends a Grow-Better Together Support Group for Families, Friends and Carers in Laverton. “You can never know everything, an ordinary person can’t have enough support dealing with problems people with a disability have. “The friendly support of other people in a similar role and the compassion that goes with that is really important.” Grow is a national organisation that provides recovery focused self-help support groups to those suffering from mental

Rowan Howard looks forward to his debut performance with Williamstown Little Theatre. 114206 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT
Rowan’s theatre embrace By NICOLE VALICEK FORMER Sunshine Coast resident Rowan Howard moved to the area last year and is preparing for his debut performance with the Williamstown Little Theatre. The theatre’s new actor moved to Williamstown with his wife Genine and one-yearold son Jack last October. The 39-year-old said he has always been a brass instrument musician but acting is a passion. He has toured Europe with the Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir, studied a Bachelor of Music Performance and is Queensland’s state champion baritone. Over the last four years he has pursued his passion and has been cast in a number of nation-
al campaigns, but was hooked after working as an extra on a Fox television series that was canned. “That’s where I got bit by the bug,” he said. After three months on set he decided to pursue acting as his full-time profession. Rowan will appear in Williamstown’s Little Theatre’s upcoming production Almost, Maine opening this week. “Being only new to Melbourne I wanted to get into a production as fast as possible to stay in training so to speak, this play is quirky and it’s a challenge to play because I’m playing five different roles.” “For me it’s very rewarding in being able to affect people and being able to be creative with your choices as an actor
and as a character.” Almost, Maine is a play by US actor and playwright, John Cariani comprising nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almosttown called Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. “It’s a challenge and it’s a lovely play, the audience should walk away feeling happy and joyous.” Directed by Kris Weber the play also stars Samantha-Ellen Bound, Janis Coffey and Ben Mitchell. Almost, Maine will open this Thursday 13 February until 1 March. Booking: 9885 9678

Wendy Barrie, left, and Jenni Mitchell from the ‘Curious Threaders’ group have a play with Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT the loom 113700
Room with a loom By YASEMIN TALAT
1119286-LN07-14
A NEW space for craft lovers has opened in Williamstown and to celebrate the group of threaders behind the project have declared February and March thread months. The Loom Room is described as a playroom for people who love threads, love to design and create objects and manipulate threads using a variety of tools. The room was created after a loom was bequeathed to the citizens of Hobsons Bay and now a group of ‘Curious Threaders’ meet weekly on a Wednesday morning to “converse, connect and create”.
Co-ordinator Jenni Mitchell said anyone curious about threading was welcome to join and share the learning experience. “The Loom Room is a space to learn and share your threading skills,” Ms Mitchell said. “Bring your ideas and come and see what’s happening.” With the help of Hobsons Bay Council and the Williamstown Library the group have employed trained weaver-artist Ilka White to lead a community project for the next two months. Ms White will conduct fortnightly sessions helping the threaders create braided rag rugs and teach the group how to warp a loom.

“We’ll also be holding monthly information sessions in the early evening with talks but artist-weavers about traditional cultural skills: from the use of grasses by Indigenous groups, and ground looms in Timor Leste, to table and peddle looms of the kind now housed in the Loom Room at The Corner,” Ms Mitchell said. The Loom Room is located at ‘The Corner’ - the building on the corner of Ferguson St and Melbourne Rd, Williamstown and the group meet every Wednesday at 11am. Revamped club offers more WITH a new restaurant, revamped bars, renovated TAB (including the latest in technology) and alfresco entertainment areas, now is the time to visit The Italian Sports Club at 601 Heaths Rd, Werribee. “Our renovations are complete, so we invite our existing members and newcomers to drop in and check out the changes,” general manager Robert Marino says. “We’re a popular venue with more than 3500 members treating the club as their second home.”
The family-friendly club seats up to 200 people in the restaurant, while three separate function rooms - one for up to 300 people, one for 50 and the other for 30 - can accommodate everything from birthdays and weddings to corporate events. And there’s a playground to keep the kids entertained while parents relax in any of these areas and order from the Italian Sports Club’s delicious a la carte menu or the wide variety of set menus. Assistant manager Vincent San-
za says, “Our food is cooked from scratch, so meals are delivered fresh to diners’ plates. We pride ourselves on offering a better dining experience in a more relaxed atmosphere.” The club aims to exceed their customers’ expectations and one way they do this is by providing staff training every two months in areas such as coffee-making and wine tasting to deliver sound advice and service to their visitors. The Italian Sports Club began as the Italian Social Club in the
late 1960s. Today’s site opened on 10 August 1974 with members providing donations and holding fundraisers. Through their bocce competitions, membership flourished ... and now the venue has grown into an impressive flagship Wyndham location with something for visitors of all ages. The Italian Sports Club, 601 Heaths Rd, Werribee, opens noon2pm and 6-9pm daily. Inquiries: 9741 1225 or iscw. com.au

Musician Darren Coggan set to inspire audiences in Peace Train.
On track for Cat “It’s good to go back to the well and hear the songs as they were originally written, on just an acoustic guitar and piano,” he said. Back in the ’70s, Cat Stevens was the ultimate rock star. Talented, charismatic, with a seemingly endless succession of beautiful melodies streaming from his imagination, the international singing star had everything. He sold more than 60 million albums, earned enough money to last several lifetimes, and enjoyed all the trappings of fame, but he wanted more out of life. So at the height of his career he shocked the world by taking his last bow. The music stopped and Cat Stevens was no more. Peace Train is a night of music and story-telling which will strike a chord deep inside the heart of anyone who longs for something more, a journey back in time, with songs that
still resonate today. Hear 24 hits sung with remarkable authenticity by one of Australia’s most exciting artists. From Moonshadow, to Morning Has Broken, Wild World, Father and Son, First Cut Is The Deepest, Hard Headed Woman and Peace Train, Darren Coggan traces the path of a man who never stoppedwondering about how to make the world a better place. Darren Coggan has toured extensively with stage shows Grease - The Mega Musical, Happy Days - The Arena Mega Musical, and Shout - The Musical Of The Wild One. He has appeared regularly on TV, including several guest appearances on Channel 7’s All Saints and currently is a presenter on Sydney Weekender. He has also been awarded two Golden Guitar awards at the CMAA Country Music Awards in 2001 and 2008.

SINCE its debut performance at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre in 2009, Darren Coggan’s Peace Train has gone on to inspire many others, playing to standing ovations in the most prestigious venues in Australia. It now returns for national encore performances around the country. This phase of this shows’ incredible journey sees Darren recreating Cat’s timeless, intimate songs as they were originally written - on an acoustic guitar and piano, seeking out the man in the music and telling the story behind the songs. “It’s been a wonderful journey touring Australia with this show and whilst it’s always a thrill to be surrounded on stage by great musicians, I have always envisaged presenting Peace Train in a more intimate setting,” said Coggan. “The singer-songwriter genre and particularly the music of Cat Stevens lends itself beautifully to an acoustic setting.

AARON Maynard put on one heck of a show at the Frank Kirk Oval on Saturday. In blistering heat, the gun Altona batsman made a spectacular 111 and guided the A’s to 217 after day one of their clash with Yarraville. The knock is the second century of the season for Maynard and Altona president Neil Burns was full of praise for his team’s star batsman. “In 39 degree heat, Aaron Maynard coming in at number three and batting almost all day was sensational,” Burns said. “He is the anchor for the side and everyone bats around him. He hits the singles when they are required and he hits the boundaries when they are required. “Aaron is one of our best trainers and one of our fittest blokes. He has taken his entire game to a whole new level and he is the professional of our club. “He really has that mental toughness and fitness to be able to bat all day.” After his side won and toss and chose to bat first, Maynard was in the thick of the action from the word go with Altona in early trouble at 1/0. Despite the hot conditions, Maynard set himself for a long inning and remained at the crease until the A’s reached 214. When play resumes this weekend, Yarraville will need to make 218 if it is to secure its third win of the Victorian SubDistrict Cricket Association season. For the currently fifth-placed Altona, a win would go a long way to guaranteeing its spot in the finals. “For us, with Andrew McCammond not playing, our bowlers need to do exactly what we have been trying to all year,” Burns said. “We have done it sporadically throughout the season, which is bowl outside the off stump, line and length. If we give some of their good players a sniff, on our track and on our ground 220 is a very gettable score. We need to be bowling line and length and just continue to be outside that off stump.”
for Doggies FOOTSCRAY returned to its winnings ways with a smashing of Dandenong in the Victorian Premier Cricket on the weekend. Bulldogs’ captain Dean Russ ensured he remained popular with his team-mates after he won the toss and had no hesitation batting first in the 40 degree heat on day one. Footscray went on to dominate the Dandenong bowlers for the next 90 overs as the runs came thick and fast. Travis Dean was outstanding after coming in at first drop, making 119 from 209 balls. The knock is also his first century of the season and included 15 boundaries. Dean was well supported by gun Victorian all-rounder John Hastings who again proved how dangerous he can be at Premier Cricket level. Coming in at number four, Hastings made 87 off just 128 balls in an innings which included seven fours and three sixes. A well-made 44 from Anthony Barton and 26 from Shanuka Dissanayake lifted the total to 7/328 after the completion of 90 overs. In reply, Footscray had no trouble ripping through the Dandenong batting line-up. Led by opening pair Jake Haberfield and Hamish WinterIrving, the Bulldogs bowled the batting side out for 126 in the 50th over on Sunday. A BRILLIANT 106 not out from Tim O’Brien moved Werribee into a strong position after day one of its clash against Western Suburbs rival Williamstown. Following two early wickets, O’Brien came to the crease with the Tigers at 2/38. From there the gun middle order batsman took control of the match and sent the Seagulls’ bowlers to all parts of Chirnside Park. O’Brien was well supported by Michael Freeman who also chipped in with 40 while David Wolfe made 31. When day two resumes Williamstown will need to make 239 to claim the win. After a slow start to the 2013/14 season, the Seagulls have rebounded well through the middle part of the season and are hunting their third successive win in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association.

Woodsmen slice through Keilor bats SPOTSWOOD is well on its way to victory against Keilor Park in Turf Cricket’s North Division after restricting the visitors to 2/83 at Donald McLean Reserve on Saturday. In a two-day clash that was affected by the extreme heat, the Woodsmen were able to get on top of the Keilor Park order to get the upper hand ahead of the second day’s play this coming weekend. Captain-coach Andrew Dickinson bowled eight and a half of the 38.3 overs on the day, and despite failing to take a wicket, he was the clear standout for Spotswood. Dickinson allowed just eight runs and bowled four maidens in his spell, while Ashley Robertson was also very tidy on his way to figures of 1/9 from five overs. Josh Moore (1/34) was the only
other wicket-taker for the Woodsmen on the day. Meanwhile Laverton’s late-season push to sneak into the top four was brought to a halt on Saturday, with the Magpies restricted to 9/71 on the road against Doutta Stars. The visitors were left languishing at 3/2 before slowly steadying the ship, but could never get ahead as the Stars’ attack went to task. Mark Logan (17) and Mark Keenan (11) were the only two Laverton batsmen to hit double figures as the top and middle order collapsed, leaving the Stars a measly target of just 72 in the 45 overs to come this Saturday. Relegation-threatened Williamstown CYMS also faces an uphill battle this Saturday after only managing to post 6/96 on the road
Spotswood’s Ashley Robertson took 1/9 against Keilor Park on Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT Saturday. 112648 against North Division frontrunner, PEGS. A hard-fought knock of 45 from opener Paul Russ was the lone standout on the CYs’ batting card as PEGS worked its way through the order. Play was abandoned after 37
overs, with the PEGS chase to come this weekend. Eighth-placed Altona North looks to be on track for its third victory after posting 183 at home to Westmeadows. Four overs into its run chase, Westmeadows is in trouble at 2/6.
DEFENDING champions City West Falcons will kick off their Victorian Netball League title defence this week. The Falcons enter the 2014 season with another strong line-up despite the retirement of last year’s co-captain Christie Barnes. She will be replaced in the leadership role by Kathleen Knott who is returning from a knee injury which hampered her 2013 season. Knott, who will share the captaincy duties with Casey Price, will slot into the goals and play alongside her sister Julia. There won’t be any time to settle into the new season for City West which will take on last year’s third placed team VU Western Lightning in round one. ALTONA resident and Australian Twenty20 spinner James Muirhead has re-signed with the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers for the next four seasons. Having made his first-class debut as a rookie with the Bushrangers last summer, Muirhead was upgraded to a full contract this season and has since made his mark in the international arena during the recent Twenty20 series against England. The 20-year-old, who claimed careerbest figures of 6-181 for a Cricket Australia Invitational XI against England at the SCG in November, said he was happy to put pen to paper with Victoria. “I feel like Victoria is the best environment for me to develop my cricket,” Muirhead said. “I was born in Melbourne, I live in Melbourne and now I can just focus on playing my cricket in Melbourne. “We’ve got a great set-up, with the best coaches ... so I’m very happy.” Over the course of the summer, Muirhead faced England in all three formats of the game, but it was his composure during the recent KFC T20 International Series that has thrown him into World Twenty20 calculations in Bangladesh after claiming four wickets at 16.00 and an economy rate of 6.40.

On the back of Australia’s Ashes dominance, local clubs are preparing for an increase in playing numbers next season. 114333 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI
Fast rising West By LIAM TWOMEY IT WILL go down as a golden summer in Australian Cricket. On the back of a 5-0 Ashes whitewash and beltings in the one day and Twenty20 series, Australia is back to its winning ways. But it is not just at the top level where plans for domination are hatched. Cricket Victoria regional manager for the West Metro region, Duncan Harrison also has big goals for the future. Working in one of the state’s fasting growing regions, Harrison has seen junior cricket in the West flourish in recent times. Not surprisingly, he is hoping the trend continues. “We want to be the biggest participation region, we want to have the strongest standards and the best coaches. We want cricket in the West to be powerful,” Harrison said. “We want everyone looking over at us in envy. “We have got a bit of work to do but we are making progress. We think we are lifting the standard of cricket in the West and hopefully that keeps going and keeps growing.” According to Harrison, one of the keys to building cricket in the region has centred on helping juniors transition from the introductory In2Cricket program to more structured competitions. Where youngsters who weren’t
ready to make the jump may have previously been lost to the game, they are now staying in cricket for longer through the T20 Blast program. Western Region Junior Cricket Association president Chris Hatzistavrou has seen first-hand the progress junior cricket has made in recent seasons. He believes another key to growing the game has been bringing the West’s separately run junior competitions under one banner. “We have got a lot more organised now,” Hatzistavrou said. “We used to have three or four junior associations and we are now one big association. We have got all the administrators on board. We have got a super group of people that are all focused on junior cricket. “The Williamstown Competition and the old West Metro merged about four years ago and we are in our fifth season now. Prior to that, we had the old Footscray Competition and the old Sunshine Competition and the Churches Competition that merged to create the Western Region. “We have got all the associations together as one so when we have meetings ... all the information is going out to all the people at the same time. “Once you make it easier for people to run a competition, it is then easier for people to run a club.”
While participation at junior level heads in the right direction, there is also an increased emphasis on helping top talent climb the ladder. The West’s premier cricket club, Footscray Edgewater launched its Bulldogs Academy last year and is already working with the region’s elite juniors. During the Christmas break, the academy organised a tour of Tasmania while there is also a tour of Sri Lanka planned for the winter. “I think traditionally, we have struggled in our pathway programs in the early age groups against the private school sector,” Harrison said. “Maribyrnong College has been a good one to come in and plug that gap as well and it’s great for us to have a sports school. “The Bulldogs Academy has created opportunities for a whole lot more cricketers to taste a lot more serious cricket. “There is going to be some sensational opportunities for cricketers growing up in the Western Suburbs over the next five or 10 years.” It isn’t just junior boys’ cricket where cricket in the West is expected to keep growing. The junior girls’ game is also expanding quickly after the successful launch of the Molly Strano Cup. “We have launched a program
aimed at girls playing against girls and we have probably got about 40-50 players playing regularly,” Harrison said. “We played a game at the MCG against Southern Districts and our girls won that game. It was a curtain raiser to the Stars and the Strikers (Big Bash League). That is an area that we are certainly looking at and want to develop over the next few years.” After back-to-back Ashes series and the success of the third Big Bash League, clubs are also preparing for an increase in numbers next season. “The Ashes series this year has been a story of success and mums and dads want to get their kids on board,” Hatzistavrou said. “I run a Milo program myself which is for the little tackers. I have only got a small group of about 30 and I have had a couple of phone calls even this week inquiring about it. “If I have a small group and I am getting a couple of phone calls then I’m sure others are too. I don’t normally get calls at this time of the year. It is normally tailing off. “It is obvious that the interest is there which has been generated through the Ashes Series and the Big Bash as well. It might be only a one or two per cent increase but we will probably start to feel that again next year.”

Missing the Magic By ADEM SARICAOGLU FORMER State League One club Altona Magic will not be part of the new National Premier Leagues Victoria competition set to be introduced this year. The club originally planned to submit an application for the NPLV, but chose to pull out ahead of the application deadline. “We just thought that the club would continue as it is,” Magic football director Rubin Todrovski told Star. “At this point in time it was probably the right decision for the club to just remain as is - and in the future if it’s still there then we’ll go for it.” Five clubs from Melbourne’s West have been offered licenses to join the NPLV for 2014. Former Victorian Premier League giants Melbourne Knights and Green Gully will join SL1 clubs St Albans, Sunshine George Cross and Werribee City who have all been invited to join the new league. Magic and Western Suburbs were the two notable former SL1 clubs that were not offered an NPL license. Last week Football Federation Victoria announced the 30 clubs and entities
that will most likely form the Victorian NPL competition. Each club is now required to confirm their participation by Wednesday next week. The FFV has not yet released details on the structure of the league, but an announcement is expected to be made in coming days. The final fixture has been slated for a 26 February release. FFV president Nick Monteleone acknowledged the clubs’ efforts in applying for a spot in the new league after what has been a troubled six months for the federation and the local game. “FFV recognises the tremendous level of effort and resources required to produce an NPL submission,” Monteleone said. “All applicants should be congratulated for their dedication in submitting an application. I would like to also thank the assessment panel for its hard work reviewing all 37 applications. “The NPL will have a positive impact on players, coaches and club development across all of Victoria.” Liam Bentley has been appointed head of NPL Victoria.

Lightning gets cracking By LIAM TWOMEY FOR the third successive year VU Western Lightning will enter the Victorian Netball League with a brand new goal set-up. In the off-season the Lightning lost shooting pair Erin McCarthy, who is going overseas, and Meg Fitzpatrick, who ruptured her ACL while playing for the Victorian Flames. Fitzpatrick is also expected to miss the entire season. The duo will be replaced in goals by Kate Thompson and Sophie Barr. “Kate was in the Australian under-21 program at the AIS for the best part of the last two years,” VU coach Matt Hills said. “She is only a young goal shooter and she will add a bit of potency to our forward line. “We have also moved Sophie Barr back into goals. She was in goals when we made the grand final.” After finishing second in 2012 and third in 2013, Hills is expecting another tough year. VU will begin its campaign this week against defending champion City West Falcons. “The last two years the competition has gone seven or eight teams deep and anyone can almost beat anyone on any given day,” Hills said. “You have got to get everything right and it all starts from next week when we play the reigning, back to back, premier who we have had an intense rivalry with over the last couple of years. “They will certainly be hard to beat. I would expect them to be right amongst it all year. “They are very well prepared and very confident group. It is going to be a significant challenge for us first up but it will give us a good indication of where we are at.”

Club caters to all-level athletics WHETHER you are a social athlete who runs for fun or fitness or wishing to be more competitive like Little Athletics and Senior Athletics, there is something for all at the Wyndham Track and Field Club. West’s best for umpiring HMMM!... Why are these umpires so happy? Recently, the VAFA Umpiring Department has advertised for new recruits out in the West and the campaign has been quite successful. “We have seen some explayers and some umpires who have moved into the area join our ranks at our Western Training Campus because they want to stay in the sport and umpire football, enjoy a fantastic standard of footy, make some great money and not get abused or harassed in the process. This is a win/win for everybody. That makes us all happy,” Terry Gunn, VAFA umpires coach said.
The VAFA Umpiring Department is looking for new recruits. The VAFA is one of the largest and best managed AFL Football competitions in Australia, employing nearly 500 umpires to cover the 75 competing clubs located around Melbourne suburbs each weekend The VAFA, to its credit, has a no alcohol during game pol-
icy for spectators, a mandatory Working with Children Check for all its umpires and a successful zero tolerance to abuse and bad behaviour towards the umpires. This ensures best practice and a safe workplace for both players and umpires. The recently adopted VAFA Western Training Campus was an innovation to allow local western-based umpires to train and umpire locally. So why not give VAFA Umpiring a try? Go down to Soldiers Reserve, Werribee, at 6pm next Wednesday, or at least give Brian Goodman a call 0408 338 098 or email him on brian@ vafa.com.au.

JUST on five thousand brave Bulldogs supporters turned up to Whitten Oval for the annual family day. I say brave because it was a dreadful day with the temperature hitting 40degrees and then a very strong southerly hit which did drop the temperature but also had everyone on edge hoping that the tents would not get blown away. President Peter Gordon told the diehards that he is pumped for the season while senior coach Brendan McCartney was his usual straight down the line tell it like it is self saying he wants the team to improve on last year. The club has a unique game coming up on 13 March at Whitten Oval when the Western Bulldogs will take on the Footscray Bulldogs around 5pm. Work will start soon on opposition change rooms and coaches boxes for the VFL games. THE Bulldogs Season Launch/ Hall of Fame night on 12 March will see Brad Johnson inducted into the Hall of Fame and maybe one or two others. “Johnno” is most deserving to be in that upper echelon of Bulldogs. His statistics alone tell a story, but when you look at the boy from Hoppers Crossing who grew up barracking for the red white and blue and then plays 364 games there is no argument. It is a boy’s own adventure, and I am sure his family will be there to support him as they did so well throughout his career. I have no inside information at all, but it would be the icing on the cake if he went into the Hall of Fame with his great mate Rohan Smith who also deserves that accolade. They were inseparable during their playing days and, in fact, I got great comedic mileage at functions when interviewing either one. They played along as you would expect from a couple of genuinely great blokes. SOME upcoming events and news. Hoppers Crossing Junior Netball Association began its season earlier this month and is looking for players in all grades from under 11 through to Under 21s. Games are held on Saturday mornings at Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing and you can contact Lisa Caithness for more details on 0413 012 376. Cost is $40 which includes entrance, door prizes, raffle tickets, food, bubbly and entertainment. Contact Cathie Strachan on 0418 594 110 for bookings. ROTARY’S annual Jalna Big Bay Swim is on Sunday 23 February from Port Melbourne to Williamstown. The 3.2km swim actually is that big that the shipping channel gets closed down for an hour while the race takes place. Marathon swimmer Chloe McCardel is the ambassador for the swim and will compete again and past winners include Tammy van Wisse, Rob Woodhouse and Sam Shepherd. Spectators can enjoy live music and the good food and beverages in Commonwealth Reserve in Williamstown next to the finishing point Pelican’s Landing restaurant on the pier. Giants cut down By ADEM SARICAOGLU A “FREAKISH” play by Williamstown pitcher Josh Lee proved to be the difference between the Wolves and the Werribee Giants in Division Two Summer League baseball on Sunday. The visiting Wolves were up 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning at Presidents Park, but the Giants had the game-tying run at third base with pinch-runner Andrew Christou. On a squeeze bunt play with one out, Christou bolted for home and in any normal circumstances would have tied the game on the play. However, after diving for the ball
and quickly scooping it to catcher Jason McDonald, Lee managed to pull off a miraculous defensive play just as Christou collided into McDonald. The Wolves then secured victory with a quick strikeout - handing them their 15th win of the summer. “It was just an amazing play, and plays like that win games,” Williamstown coach Dean Marnell said shortly afterward. “They tried to squeeze bunt with one out and it looked like the runner was going to make it, but Josh just flicked it up to Jason McDonald and it was virtually bang-bang. “As soon as Jason caught the
ball, (Christou) collided with him and he held onto the ball. It was just an amazing play, and it took a play like that to win the game in the end.” The ladder-leading Wolves were pushed from start to finish by the gallant Giants, but a strong day on the mound from both Lee and starter Jason Lester proved a major factor by game’s end. Marnell said a couple of late batting adjustments also worked out well for Williamstown. “It was pretty tough with the windy conditions out here today and Werribee played their game and their field really well and we just had to
make adjustments,” Marnell said. “We did that towards the end of the game with the bat, so offensively that was pleasing, and defensively our pitchers threw the ball really well, too.” The Wolves have a bye this weekend before ending the regular season on the road to Moorabbin later this month. Currently two wins ahead of the chasing pack, Williamstown has just about wrapped up top spot and promotion into Division One, but could be pushed by third-placed Moorabbin in its last game before finals kick off in March.

Caddy geared for fast lane LIFE is always busy. But with a Caddy it can be fun. With efficient engines, intelligent use of space, superb performance and brilliant handling, Caddy is a smart choice and genuinely enjoyable to drive. The Caddy range has been designed to match your busy urban lifestyle. Monday to Friday, you’ve got a myriad of work commitments and need a vehicle that is agile, comfortable, versatile and efficient. It has to be easy to get around the city and easy to park too. After-hours, there are kids to collect from band practice and sport - “Hey Mum, can we give my mates a lift home too?” Enroute, you’ll need to duck in to pick up a week’s worth of groceries that fit alongside the sports bags and guitar cases in the boot. Caddy takes all this in its stride and makes your working week a joy. Typically though,
life on the weekends gets even busier. The latest Caddy has a stylish face that matches the Volkswagen DNA, thanks to sleek headlights and a redesigned bumper and grille, which are paired with an elegant bonnet and front guards. Overall, the Caddy range has a more refined, more sophisticated front end. But it’s not just a pretty face. Caddy sports instrumentation, audio/navigation system and a range of engine and transmission options that achieve impressive fuel consumption and environmental figures. As you would expect, the build quality and attention to detail is typically Volkswagen. And when you add the impressive list of safety and security features in the Caddy, it’s a choice that makes tremendous
sense. Safety features include driver and front passenger airbags with side head and thorax airbags for added protection. Caddy also features electronic stability programme and traction control system as standard, which will keep you safe when the road conditions aren’t. You’ll also benefit from antilock braking system, electronic brake assist and electronic brake distribution - absolute essentials for protecting life on the road. And for added peace of mind, the Caddy now comes with a three-year unlimited kilometre warranty and capped price servicing. To test drive this vehicle, visit Werribee Volkswagen at 8-12 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, on Monday to Saturday 8.30am-6pm, Sundays 10am-5pm, or call 9974 5777 for more information.
The Caddy makes getting you moving from place to place easy.
