FOR COLES JUNCTION DEVELOPMENT JIM FAGAN Noosa Council has rejected Coles’ development proposal for the bowls club site at Noosa Junction, one councillor, Tony Wellington describing the plan as “highly unimaginative, humdrum and better suited to chaotic Caloundra or Maroochydore.

“There is nothing that adds style or distinction,” he told Noosa Council last Thursday. Earlier Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot told the council a petition signed by 82 residents representing Noosa Junction traders had been received. It supported in principle Coles’ application and asked council to defer its decision so more discussions with the applicant could be explored to provide greater community benefit.

Unbelievable, we are already racing through February and the recent muchneed rainfall has Noosa Shire looking its best. It’s no wonder Tourism Noosa is having such success with its Love Noosa campaign – who wouldn’t want to come and visit? The campaign – along with major upcom-

ing events like the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing – is crucial in bringing visitors – and therefore business/revenue – to the Shire during the autumn/winter months. As with many largely tourism-based economies, the low season can be tough on local businesses. But it is also very important for those businesses to look after locals, as they are a lifeline during those quiet times. This is especially true for restaurants and it’s good to see those Locals Specials appearing on the menu. Our new columnist Amanda Stevens highlights the importance of good customer service on page 6. Amanda is one of the most in-demand female speakers in Australia. Along the way she’s built a multi-million dollar marketing consultancy (which she sold to a global recruitment firm in 2011), collected an impres-

Investment warning as Nowak faces court ISOBEL COLEMAN If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. That’s the warning this week from Enzo Fantasia, one of possibly hundreds of investors who have lost their superannuation funds and in some cases everything, through the collapse of SAbased Charterhill Group and Nova Real Estate Proprietary Limited.

Close to $6 million invested by self-managed super funds is at stake as Nova has been placed in voluntary administration while another Charterhill Group company, Lending Solutions Proprietary Limited, is being wound up. Heard Phillips have been appointed as administrators of Nova Real Estate and as liquidators for Lending Solutions by sole director of both companies George Nowak, who is also chief executive of the Charterhill Group. Mr Fantasia, who now faces bank-

ruptcy, is currently suing Mr Nowak. “It is my understanding that he has been running these scams for years and almost daily I hear from another person that has lost out through dealings they have had with Mr Nowak. Early investors, like myself, have lost everything.” Mr Fantasia said Mr Nowak offered “guaranteed” home and land investment packages, where individuals were encouraged to roll their superannuation into a self-managed fund and through the guidance of Mr Nowak, purchase investment properties with

rental guarantees. Mr Nowak recommended the land and the builder. Mr Fantasia said Mr Nowak arranged everything, including loan documents. Whereas most investors only bought one property, Mr Fantasia agreed to purchase two. “He owned the land in Griffith and I now know I paid way over value for that. It’s not just me – there are hundreds of people.” Mr Fantasia commenced legal proceedings against Mr Nowak and associated entities some three years

Urgent action on climate change Local environmentalists have collected nearly 800 signatures on a petition, demanding action on climate change.

Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) spokesperson Vivien Griffin presented the petition to local MP and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss with the message: “We need to ride the wave of a post-carbon century, not be dumped by it”. Former Noosa Councillor Ms Griffin said: “As a coastal community, highly dependent on tourism, we must insist that our government take this issue seriously It is no longer acceptable to avoid action by waiting for other nations to come on board. Someone has to show leadership. “We all know the litany of changes that we must consider, from heatwaves, more intense rain

events, droughts, floods, ocean warming and acidification, even dengue fever. All these issues have potential to have grave impact on the Noosa community and economy.” The Climate Change Authority has said Queensland is particularly vulnerable to climate change. “They have identified that more than $50 billion in commercial, industrial, road and rail and residential assets in Queensland are potentially exposed to flooding and erosion caused if sea levels rise by 1.1 metres, making it the most atrisk state for these types of assets,” Ms Griffin said. “The Australian Government is required to advise the United Nations in April what its emission reduction target for 2020 will be. “Currently the Australian government target reduction is five per cent against 2000 figures. This target would leave future genera-

STABBING IN TEWANTIN An argument over dirty dishes has left one man needing micro-surgery and a woman facing court charged with unlawful wounding. On Monday, Police were called to a home in Tewantin at 11.10am where the 45-year-old male occupant of the home was found with a stab wound to his upper left arm. The man told Police his housemate, a 54-year-old woman, had stabbed him with a 30cm knife after they argued about dishes which had not been washed for five days. The victim was taken to Nambour Hospital and the alleged offender was arrested a short time later. The woman was released on bail and is due to appear in Noosa Magistrates Court on March 18 to face one charge of unlawful wounding.

PARTY SAFE WARNING Noosa Heads Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight has reminded people to party safe this St Patrick’s Day, on March 14. Snr Sgt McReight said extra patrols will be focussing on drink driving during the afternoon and late into the night, with officers from surrounding beats joining the blitz. The warning came on Tuesday, following a flood of drink driving cases in Noosa Magistrates Court. Of the higher readings was a 34-year-old Sunshine Beach woman who pleaded guilty to driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.165 per cent. She received a six month licence suspension, $700 fine and no conviction was recorded. A 37-year-old Noosa Heads man pleaded guilty to riding a scooter with a blood alcohol content of 0.159 per cent. The man also received a six month suspension, $600 fine and no conviction was recorded. Snr Sgt McReight said a bit of common sense would help keep everyone safe this St Patrick’s Day. “Have a designated driver and look after your mates. We’re hoping people will help us out by cooperating with Police,” he said.

BODY IN RIVER The body of an elderly Tewantin woman was found in the Noosa River last Thursday night. Local men found the body in the river near the intersection of Thomas Street and Gympie Terrace, while fishing. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a coroner’s inquiry is continuing.

“Unnecessary expense” slammed by community ISOBEL COLEMAN Community voice Barry Cotterell has slammed a developer for pursuing an application that was “never viable”. Mr Cotterell, Vice President of Peregian Beach Community Association (PBCA), said Multi Span’s bid to develop a shopping centre on community land at the site of the old bowls club was in conflict with the Noosa Plan. He said Council and the PBCA was being put “to unnecessary expense in defending the

developer’s appeal in the Planning and Environment Court”. “Noosa Council is to be congratulated for acting in the interests of the Peregian Beach community and against the interests of a developer seeking a private commercial benefit from using Council land,” he said. Noosa Council will advise Multi Span that it will not permit access to the proposed development site for pedestrians and vehicles through the Council car park at 253 David Low Way and if necessary will erect a substantial fence on the boundary of the land to prevent such access.

This follows the carrying of a motion, moved by Mayor Noel Playford, at Council’s meeting last Thursday. Council also confirmed that Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC) had refused to consent to the inclusion of Council’s car park for use in respect of the application. The car park is now in the Noosa Shire. “Despite this refusal, the development plans submitted to the SCRC were drawn on the premise that this access will occur in the future” Mr Cotterell said. “This Council advice to Multi Span makes it clear that the proposed development has no

access from the David Low Way and can only be accessed from Rufous Street. “Noosa Council, by this decision, has denied the developer the use of public land for its private commercial development. It has also preserved the car park, partly funded by developer contributions from developers in the Peregian Village, for the use of visitors to the Community House and the village. “The development of a supermarket on this site was never viable but the developer refuses to listen to the wishes of the community or the advice of the relevant Council.”

An obviously irked Cr Abbot to Mayor Noel Playford: “Can I ask that we apply the rules and that the gallery remain silent?” Mayor Playford to the gallery: “We know there is a deal of enthusiasm but we don’t want hisses or boos for some and claps for others so we would be pleased if you would do the right thing and keep Cr Abbot happy.” Gallery spectators were politely silent for the rest of the meeting and at the close, Cr Abbot spoke to them: “My apologies if anyone was upset by my demand for silence but it is part of the bylaws. They are partly for the protection of the individual councillors here to stop and avoid the situation where we might get boos and hisses from the gallery. Again my apologies if I have upset anybody.”

Coles looking at options for Junction JIM FAGAN Coles is having another look at its options for developing the bowls club site it owns at Noosa Junction following Noosa Council’s knock back of the retail giant’s proposals last Thursday.

Corporate affairs general manager Robert Hadler told Noosa Today the company was disappointed with council’s rejection “given the positive customer response to all of our recent developments in the area, including Coolum. We are now considering our options.” Meanwhile battle lines are being drawn up locally over the

council’s refusal to permit the application which includes an 1180sq m liquor store on the site, as well as a hotel of nearly the same size, plus shops, office space and some units. It also involves taking over a council-owned public parking area and some of the nearby Pinnaroo Park. Council decision is backed by

KERBSIDE COLLECTIONS Waste watcher and Noosa Councillor Joe Jurisevic has welcomed the return of bulk rubbish kerbside collections to Noosa. Noosa Council’s infrastructure committee, chaired by Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot, recommended the return of the service, and the full council has given approval. The collection will run over seven weeks from late April to early June. Councillor Jurisevic, co-ordinator of the local Clean-Up Australia Day campaign, opposed SCC’s decision to scrap bulk collection four years ago. “It’s no coincidence that illegal dumping around Noosa Shire has increased dramatically since that

terms of what has occurred over the last six years to bring this council to fruition. This is not, I would argue, a good Noosa-style development. I believe it will just shove Noosa down the path of becoming like everywhere else.” Cr Bob Abbot said he had concerns about the use of Pinnaroo Park for a road to try to maximise the commercial gain of this particular site. “I also have real issues about the use of the car park which the Noosa Junction traders created with a levy and which we are going to lose and about the addition of another big box liquor retail outlet in this community.” Mayor Noel Playford said he believed “the applicants, once they purchased the site as they did, were entitled to apply for what they did in good faith and I don’t think there should be any blame attached to them for that “However, there is land in-

volved here zoned for community facilities, that is the council-owned car park, and, as Cr Abbot said, paid for by businesses in the Junction. To turn that land into other uses for private gain requires, under our planning scheme and the State Planning Act, significant community benefit. This falls far short of that. “I think the best thing we can do with this is consign it the dustbin by refusing it. It would be naïve to think that piece of land is going to sit there forever. One thing I’ve learned from a few years in local government is the application you are dealing with is not necessarily the last application you’ll get on a parcel of land. There will always be more applications. Our job is to decide things in the community interest and this is not it.”

There is a distinct spring in the step of many local tourism operators and retailers, who are basking in the lingering glow of the best tourist season in over five years. When was the last time you communicated with your existing customers to entice them to return with some sort of offer or reward? 2. How do you specifically reward your best 50 or 100 customers? Scholarship a dream come true Former Noosa District State High School student Carlee Darben can’t wipe the smile off her face.

For the Cooroy local is headed off to the Queensland University of Technology in a few weeks with a scholarship in one hand and a train ticket in the other. Carlee was one of several impressive applicants in the Cooroy Community Bank branch scholarship program and will now use the funds to work her way through her three year degree. Carlee’s studies will see her commence a Bachelor of Business majoring in Public Relations on February 25. “It’s going to be a great adventure and I’m very excited about the year ahead,” Carlee said.

“I’m so thankful our local Cooroy Community Bank branch has given me this opportunity and for all this means to me, my family and my future. Dangerous driving lands man in court JOLENE OGLE A Coast father of two pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and wilful damage in Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The court heard Bryan Richard Eaton, 29, suffered a stress-related episode before driving his Toyota Hilux utility on the wrong side of the road around blind corners on Browns Creek Rd, just south of North Arm. Police Prosecutor Jamie Baker said that when witnesses tried to stop Eaton’s vehicle, he did a u-turn and travelled back along the road,

on the wrong side. Thirty-one metal posts were flattened along a 2km stretch of road and six wheelie bins were damaged by Eaton’s vehicle, Sgt Baker said. Eaton’s defence lawyer said his client suffers from an anxiety and stress-related disorder but, while he has an “impediment”, Eaton acknowledges he is responsible for the damage and has already paid council for the replacement of the wheelie bins. Magistrate Bernadette Callaghan ordered Eaton to undergo a medical and psychiatric assessment, placed him on 12 months’ probation and suspended his driver’s licence for nine months.

Noosa takes little Leo to its heart JIM FAGAN Noosa has opened its heart to little Leo the Lionheart Ellis and the efforts by his mum and dad, Lisa and Campbell, to raise money to thank the charity, HeartKids Queensland which helped them through tough times at Brisbane’s Mater Hospital.

Two weeks ago we told how death was little more than a heartbeat away for the now 17-month old when he was born. Aware that Leo had a congenital heart defect and needed instant cardiac care, a standby specialist team at Brisbane’s Mater Hospital operated on him immediately so he could breathe. For baby Leo it was the start of five major operations, including open heart surgery that dogged the first five months of his young life. We also reported how Campbell

and Lisa were staging a charity walk “Two Feet and a Heartbeat” this Saturday starting at 3pm from Lions Park followed by a barbecue and raffle draws. “We are doing this fundraiser just to try and pay them back for being there to help us. When you look at Leo now you wouldn’t know what he has gone through. He looks a very normal little boy now but his first six months were a really rocky road,” Lisa said. Initially, the couple thought they might raise $2000 but the overwhelming response following Noosa Today’s page 1 story means they now have their sights on $10,000 and, hopefully, more. “We have had some amazingly generous gift donations from the local businesses and local residents, which will be auctioned off at the Lions Park after the charity walk. These items include accommodation and dinner vouchers, gym memberships, artworks and a case of truly exquisite

vintage shiraz. Said Lisa, “The raffles and auction will commence after the walk. We ask those joining then to please bring some extra cash for gold coin donations for the BBQ, and to bid on some of these additional prize items!! All proceeds will be donated to HeartKids.” For little Leo the fundraiser will be a chance to add another bead to his already extensive collection of heartbeads. These beads are provided to patients in hospital by HeartKids, with each distinctive bead representing a procedure, treatment or event. “The kids and their families can trace their unique journey through the string of beads,” said Lisa.“Heartbeads help enrich the experience for cardiac patients in children’s hospitals.” The “Two Feet and a Heartbeat” Charity Walk will start at 3pm from Lions Park on Saturday, February 15 and will take in Hastings Street, along the boardwalk to Noosa Na-

tional Park and back to Lions Park for a barbecue and raffle draws. Organisers have asked everyone wear something red, the HeartKids colour. Hugh Gilbarry was the first one to dive down into the engine room and start the emergency generators so we could have light to see what was going on. That was something quite extraordinary. We could have gone down at any time and he chose to go down to the bowels of the ship. “Gary and I actually tried to swim ashore but we didn’t realise it was 12 miles away. We eventually got picked up by the Melbourne’s lifeboats. We spent a couple of days steaming up to Sydney.”

Part of the Voyager story which has been the subject of two Royal Commissions was how the survivors were treated. Asked about this, Graham, who stayed in the Navy for nine years before retiring with the rank of petty officer, said that after 50 years he hasn’t any real feelings about it. “It’s just the way I am. Back in 1964 there was no such thing as stress related injuries. During the Second World War they called it ‘shell shock.’ Even in Vietnam if somebody had a bad experience you got back on the horse as quickly as possible. “That was the Navy’s attitude. They sent us back to other ships and all they did for us was replace our uniforms, give us a week’s pay and sent us on a week’s survivor’s leave.”

Noosa man recalls HMAS Voyager tragedy JIM FAGAN It’s been 50 years since Australia’s worst naval peacetime disaster but the memory of being the one of the last two sailors to leave the sinking HMAS Voyager still lives with Graham Davis, of Noosaville.

On a calm evening just before 9pm on February 10, 1964 HMAS Melbourne sliced through Voyager during naval exercises off Jervis Bay naval base, killing 14 officers 67 sailors and one civilian dock worker. Accompanied by 49 fellow crew members, Graham was on board HMAS Choules on Mon-

day for the 50-year commemorative service at the disaster site about 12 miles from Jervis Bay. Speaking from Jervis Bay, he told Noosa Today he was 19 and an engineering mechanic when his boat was hit. “I was below the waterline. There was shock but no one panicked just ‘What the hell happened?’ Those who survived made it to life rafts or held on to anything that kept them afloat. “Gary Doust and I were the last two to leave. We dived over the side as the boat was listing and I remember I had to give evidence at a Royal Commission on why some of the crew were given awards of valour for their actions. One of the questions I was asked was, ‘What was the first thing you did when you hit the water?’ and

JIM FAGAN Tewantin bowlers are taking their sport to Noosa’s schools and they have $8000 from Queensland Bowls to help them do it.

“We want to show the youngsters that lawn bowls is not an old people’s game but one you can enjoy at any age. Some of our current Australian champions are in their late teens,” David Muir of Tewantin-Noosa Bowls Club told Noosa Today yesterday David is a member of the club’s match committee and he was watching 24 Year 11 and 12 students from Sunshine Beach State High School get tips on terms like “bias” and a “jack” from three of the club’s coaches, as well as the etiquette of the game. “For a variety of reasons local bowls clubs like Peregian Beach, Noosa Heads and Cooroy have closed or about to close but we are fighting back to keep our club and encouraging these kids is one way to do it. “We asked Queensland Bowls for a grant of $8000 to buy 15 sets of smaller bowls for school students to use. We were successful and right now we‘re preparing a proposal to try

and develop a schools’ competition. So far we have identified eight schools in the Noosa area. They are: Pacific Lutheran College, St Andrews Anglican College, Sunshine Christian College, Sunshine Beach State High School, Noosaville High School, Noosa District State School, Good Shepherd Lutheran College and Noosa Christian College. “We have trained coaches and instruction will be free. We hope to get the whole thing up and running in a month but in the meantime the kids can come here and get on with enjoying the game. It’s very exciting.” The school’s sports master, Steven Steel, said the pupils did think it was an old men’s sport to start with but “once they get the hang of it they enjoy it. We try to do a variety of sports and activities so that when they leave school they have experience with different sports. We go out to the Par 3 to play golf, we play tennis and we join up with Noosa Heads Lifesaving Club. We’ve been to Noosa Heads Bowls Club in the past and it’s nice to get the chance to go lawn bowling today.” Student Jayden Kuhnenann, of Castaways Beach, said it was his first try at bowls. “It’s look like a great sport to get into. It’s fun.” Memphis Pay of Sunshine Beach thought it was “pretty cool. I like it.”

53rd time a charm JOLENE OGLE Nina Starkey went on 52 dates in one year.

“I should write a book about it,” she jokes as she recalls the time she climbed out the window of a cafe to avoid a less than romantic date. Nina, 40, now a mother of two girls, said she found all 52 dates through online dating sites and was just about to give up the search for love when a message came through from a man named Scott who lived in Mackay. “My 13-year-old daughter saw his picture and said he looked like a nice guy,” Nina said. “She wouldn’t let me close off the computer until I had sent him a reply.” Luckily for Nina, it would prove 53rd time a charm when after three months of talking Scott, 43, flew from Mackay to meet Nina in Brisbane. “So, the official story is we met at the airport,” Nina laughs. Now, four years and one baby later, Nina and Scott will marry in front of family and friends on at the Spit, Noosa this Saturday.

But not one to follow tradition, Nina said their wedding was planned within three days and she expects it will cost no more than $3,000. “Your wedding shouldn’t be a stressful day,” Nina said. “With a guideline of what you need, it should be an easy thing to do.” Nina has enlisted the help of local Noosa businesses such as Noosa Florist, who will be providing the bridal bouquet, as well as Oh Sew Noosa and Noosa Jetty Builders who have helped to construct the arbour for the unique DIY wedding. Costs have also been kept down by utilising talented family members with Nina’s mother-in-law doing her hair for the big day and kind friends Emma and Danny, whose home will host the reception. “Weddings should not have to be a tricky or costly affair,” Nina said. “I have used local businesses and the wedding, including everything, comes in to just under $2,200. This also includes accommodation and nannies as well as waitressing staff (for the reception).”

Noel’s starting a revolution JOLENE OGLE “Ideas are where revolutions start.” That was the message from Noosa Mayor Noel Playford when he addressed the local business community at the first general meeting of CCIQ Noosa Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night, at the Australis.

In a public interview with CCIQ Noosa vice-president Di Henshall, Mr Playford said the Noosa Council was open to ideas from the local business community on how to grow and improve the local economy.

Labelling the Master’s application a “cash vacuum cleaner”, Mayor Playford said there was no room in Noosa for “big businesses” that suck cash out of the local economy. He also defended the role of community centres in the Noosa Shire, saying that while they required heavy subsidising, they played an important role in the community. He said Council will consider applying better business principals to community centres such as Noosa Aquatic Centre and The J, but said one of Council’s main roles was to provide such services. Who remembers when? Who remembers when the surf club was a tin shed, Hastings Street had a service station, there were no roundabouts and you had to burn your feet to get to the beach?

Chefs Luc Turschwell, Noosa restaurant pioneer, and Darren Sandilands, owner of the Sunshine Beach surf club’s restaurant, remember like it was yesterday and next Sunday, they’re bringing a bit of old Noosa to Sunshine Beach SLSC. The two iconic chefs were a crucial part of what has been dubbed the “Golden Era” of Noosa; when the catch of the day was plucked from the ocean and dinner bookings were taken while scaling fish on Hastings Street. When reminiscing, Luc and Darren paint a picture of a relaxed, beachside street where Luc would clean fresh fish under a tap outside the fibro shack that housed the original Belmondos. “You could see the sea and you could see the river,” Luc said. The two men met when Luc owned Belmondos and Darren was an apprentice chef at the only other restaurant on Hastings St, Dooley’s.

“Remember the time when we used to shoot across restaurant to restaurant to borrow fish or something because we had run out of something?” Luc said. “One thing I remember, I always remember before service, at 5.30pm, all the chefs would be out on the street together socialising,” Darren said. “We’d have a drink,” Luc added. “Of course, how else would we cope with service?” It was during these days that Noosa made a splash on the dining scene by creating a unique fusion of tastes and flavours, something Darren calls Noosa-style cuisine which brought people to the now famous street. “Luc’s had very many famous cafes in Noosa. He was an early pioneer for a lot of the early cafes and restaurants and the Noosa-style cuisine,” Darren said. “Noosa style cuisine was leading its way in the 70s and 80s because chefs came from all over the world and they were willing to experiment. It was more the fusion.” Luc offers Moreton Bay bugs as an example. “Moreton Bay bugs are $40 or $50 a kilo nowadays. In my time they used to throw them away because they didn’t know they were edible. So I used to go

But there’s nothing wrong with indulging in a little nostalgia. Next Sunday, February 16, Darren and Luc will bring back the best of the original Noosa scene to the Sunshine Beach SLSC with help from local music legend, Barry Charles & the Deeper Beat. Radiation therapist Ian works for Third World sick JIM FAGAN When radiation therapist Ian Lynch took early retirement in 1996 it took only a few months for him to realise he needed an interest so he went to a mission hospital in India and using his professional skills, helped set up its radiotherapy unit.

Since then he has made repeat visits to cancer hospitals in a number of countries, among them Iraq, Kuwait, Egypt, Turkey, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka , Vietnam, Ethiopia and Israel, working with doctors, physicists and radiation therapists, teaching them to improve their work practices with new equipment and establish training programs. “Developing countries are moving from old Cobalt 60 machines to the new generation of sophisticated Linear Accelerators. It’s a big step for them. Standards have been pretty low in the past and I train them how to competently treat the patients as well as preventing the mistakes they might have made in the past.” Ian, 76, who works mostly as a volunteer, lives in Tewantin and he and his wife Monica recently spent 12 months in Hanoi, Vietnam, and have just come back from three weeks in India, where he visited the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. “I’ve been there six times,” he told Noosa Today. “It is a huge hospital with 2200 beds and 7000 outpatients every day, it is very crowded and people come to it from all over India. “It is run solely on donations. I had been subscribing to it regularly so, shortly after my retirement, I thought I would go and have a

I take the prescription from the radiation oncologist, using computers, work out the dose and where he wants to put the treatment and treat the patient daily. Asked if there were many people visiting these countries and doing the sort of work he does, he said, “No, not that I’ve come across. People know about me by word of mouth. The second time I went to India I asked a company in Switzerland, which manufactured radiotherapy treatment machines, if they could help me with an airfare, the answer was yes but only if you go to Turkey for three months. After Turkey, it was Egypt and so it went on. “ Ian says breast, lung and gynaecological cancers among younger people are common in the countries he goes to. “If they are not set up properly on the machine every day, they get side effects from the treatment which will add to further patient complications.” He goes away for six to 12 weeks usually. “I have seen so much sadness and suffering but I am proud and happy that I can contribute something to ease the burden of these less fortunate people. Cancer services in many developing countries are under immense pressure due to lack of infrastructure and patient overload. “Many patients arrive with advanced disease and there are long waiting lists. In Ethiopia there was only one treatment machine for the whole country. Patients would arrive on stretchers after being carried for many, many miles and were allowed to camp in the hospital grounds until a bed became available. When the campus was full they would camp in makedo shanties on the outside perimeter fence or in local church yards. “In Australia we live in a very fortunate country”.

I am proud and happy that I can contribute something to ease the burden of these less fortunate people.

Local investors are doing their bit for Noosa’s commercial property market with another top end sale reported this week.

Shop 5/62 Hastings Street – a retail unit on the sought after strip - was sold to a local investor with a net yield of approximately 7.4 per cent in a deal negotiated by Paul Forrest and Tracey Ryan of Ray White Commercial Noosa. With an established tenant in place, the deal was clinched at $1.575 million. Mr Forrest said the 61sq m tenancy was leased to well-known local business ‘Poeta Herford on Hastings’, which has a five year lease on the property.

“With the completion of this sale, supply of investment property in Hastings Street has become extremely limited,” he said. “Investors - and in particular local investors - are responding to the transitioning market very positively. This is creating a significant increase in demand for Noosa property compared to the levels of the previous five years.” Ms Ryan said recent leasing activity in Hastings Street had also seen vacancy rates tighten. “Current projections will see a retail vacancy level in Hastings Street of less than two per cent by Easter,” she said. HOLIDAY PARKING What is council thinking? As if the closure of Noosa Heads Lions Park during the Christmas holidays wasn’t bad enough, now they are proposing to shut it down for three weeks during the Easter school holidays! Before and after these holidays are the Noosa Winter Festival and the Noosa Food and Wine Festival. In other words, this park will be closed for months! This is no more than an easy money-rabbing exercise! With parents, in particular, trying to follow medical advice to shut down all technology and get themselves and children outside for a healthier more active and social experience, wouldn’t you think your local council would help? What is even worse is it’s hitting that community group which has the least time to complain. Trying to raise well-adjusted healthy little human beings is difficult when many are being

The experiments of RW Wood that John referred to had nothing to do with the effect of CO2 on global warming. We all agree there is no glass roof over the earth, and that the mechanisms of a garden greenhouse and the global “greenhouse effect” are not identical - just analogous as far as they go. That’s why climate models are significantly more complicated than just programming in a glass barrier surrounding the earth! Yes, a garden greenhouse acts by inhibiting convection, which is different from how various atmospheric greenhouse gases absorb/re-emit outgoing IR and prevent some from

Instead, the atmospheric greenhouse effect causes cooling of the lower atmosphere to be slower and hence remain warmer than it would otherwise be. Photons of IR radiation from the upper atmosphere are permitted by science to emit towards the lower atmosphere and slow the overall loss of radiation without violating thermodynamic laws.

NO RIGHT TO MURDER Isn’t it lucky that the Dept of Environment and Heritage Planning doesn’t apply the same rules to humans as it does to koalas? Imagine a new State law that all infertile humans must be euthanised. What gives this Department the right to murder koalas? Please don’t give me the argument that in the wild the koalas would die, because without doctors we would die. We have vets to save these creatures. Apart from having the right to live the koala provides a great tourist attraction .The tourists don’t care if the koalas are fertile or not, nor do the koalas as long as they can munch happily on gum leaves. I am sure every Noosa business would contribute to a fund to save these animals, by providing the necessary medical care. A money box on each shop counter would soon be filled and I am sure local schools would take up the cause. The state member for this area should stop this stupidity.

GATEWAY TO NOOSA In response to Edward Muir’s letter (NT Jan 20) regarding EDV. I am a current member of EDV. I am

not a not self-interested, self-funded retiree. I formerly lived in Doonan. I have always used the facilities of the Noosa area. Mr Muir’s arguments, with respect, don’t add up. EDV is not made up of wealthy self-interested, self-funded retirees. EDV has never endorsed diminished economic activity nor have they hurt jobs. EDV is a community group, originally formed with the intention of petitioning the former Qld local govervment minister to include Eumundi/Doonan/Verrierdale in the Noosa Shire. EDV was also an integral part of the Free Noosa campaign. It seems logical to me to include this large hinterland region as part of the Noosa Shire. In fact, Eumundi is the main southern gateway to the Noosa area via Eumundi-Noosa Road. The state of that road (beyond the shire boundary) and the condition of several of the Eumundi roundabouts and road verges is proof that the SCC is not the slightest bit interested in spending money in that region. If Noosa Heads is the jewel of the northern end of the coast, and Eumundi is the gateway, under the current SCC it is akin to having a shiny new suit with dirty brown shoes that will never be replaced.

Last Saturday night saw the hosting of the 3rd annual Sunshine Coast Theatre Alliance (SCTA) Season Launch Soiree, where the current seven members of the alliance presented a preview of their theatrical offerings for 2014.

There will be a huge amount on offer for theatre-goers this year, with close to 50 live productions across the Coast, including all genres from farcical comedy, to musicals and everything in between.

Hosted by SCTA president, Sam Coward, the gala evening was held at Noosa Arts Theatre and saw the who’s who of the local theatre fraternity rubbing shoulders and kicking up their heels. There were also a few VIP guests including award-winning actor, singer director and writer James Millar. Also out and about were representatives from Bendigo Bank, who were announced as the major sponsors of the alliance for 2014. Regional Manager, Rob Chittick joined friends from the Te-

Green light for live sessions The Green Room, Eumundi, is set to become the newest live music venue with the launch of the Live Sessions eight week lineup.

Live Sessions kicked off last Saturday with local musicians Lloyd and Jade performing for the crowd, while Emma Rumble and The Vast will perform this Saturday, from 2pm. The eight-week program will see local, budding artists as well as established acts perform for the crowd while being recorded for a live YouTube broadcast. The line-up features Sunshine Coast favourites The Merrys, a brother and sister duo who have just released their first EP, Glad You’re Around, as well as veteran performer Shannon Carroll, who has become a staple on the local live music scene. The Green Room, located in the Imperial Hotel on Memorial Drive, is tipped to be one of the Shire’s premier music venues with the Live Sessions promising an eclectic mix of

A National Surfing Reserve listing for Noosa? LIFE OF BRINE PHIL JARRATT

Through no fault of my own I find myself chairing a committee that hopes to see Noosa installed as Australia’s 19th National Surfing Reserve, and soon after that, Australia’s second World Surfing Reserve. I need another job like a fish needs a briefcase, but I think this is a wonderful opportunity to enshrine Noosa as an iconic surf destination, a recognition long overdue.

The community working group for Noosa National Surfing Reserve includes representatives of all beach users and stakeholders, and our nomination has the endorsement of Mayor Noel Playford, and surfing councillors Tony Wellington and Frank Wilkie are expected to join the group at its next meeting. So, what does it all mean? Formed in Sydney in 2005, National Surfing Reserves (NSR) is a voluntary organisation dedicated to recognising iconic surfing sites in Australia. It is self-funded and non-political. In this context, ‘iconic’ means places of intrinsic environmental, heritage, sporting and cultural value. The concept of NSR is for all people to be able to enjoy, understand and protect special coastal environments of universal value to the surfing world. A National Surfing Reserve does not attempt to exclude any user group. In Noosa for our formation meeting in early December, NSR founder and patron Brad Farmer said: “Noosa has been on our radar for quite some time, so it’s great to see the community take the initiative. NSR will be behind the committee every step of the way.” If successful, Noosa would join Gold Coast point breaks Burleigh Heads, Kirra, Currumbin and Snapper Rocks as Queensland’s only National Surfing Reserves. Australia’s other 18 NSR’s include Manly-Freshwater in Sydney, Angourie and Crescent Head on the NSW North Coast, and Yallingup, WA. Only Manly-Freshwater, the historic birthplace of surfboard riding in Australia, has World Surfing Reserve status. I’ve looked at the criteria for both NSR and WSR status and don’t think there’s any doubt that Noosa’s famous point breaks tick every box. Our aim in the coming months will be to seek input from all beach users and stakeholders, then prepare a set of nominations for both National Surfing Reserve and then World Surf-

ing Reserve. The key points in the criteria are quality and consistency of the waves, a place considered sacred by the international surfing community, and a history of recognition as a prime surf location by national and international surfers. While some National Surfing Reserves have been gazetted by government, Noosa would not need to take this step. Three of our five world class point breaks are within the Noosa National Park, and the other two adjoin it, so this is not an issue of environmental protection, although NSR would give us one voice to speak out against detrimental development and other issues likely to affect the quality of our beaches. But primarily it is a stamp of global recognition for one of Noosa’s greatest natural assets. The working model for Noosa’s NSR extends around the shoreline from the border of the National Park at Sunshine Beach to the recreational water use line at the river mouth, taking in North Sunshine, A-Bay, Granite, TeaTree, National Park, Johnson’s (Little Cove), First Point, Main Beach and Noosa West. If you’re interested in this proposal, please have your say in local media. We’ll also be starting a Facebook page in coming weeks and announcing our first public meeting.

It’s been a few years since the last remake of Neville Schute’s end of the world drama, On The Beach. Helping kids Get Fit and ‘appy A new mobile app which integrates technology with sport and physical activity is set to revolutionise the way children get fit.

Minister for Recreation and Sport Steve Dickson said the Daily Physical Activity Guide app provided tips for incorporating physical activity into everyday life. “This free app delivers on our election promise to get more children and young people involved in sport and recreation,” Mr Dickson said. “The Daily Physical Activity Guide app acts as a manual for teachers to show children how to make active living and learning a way of life. “It will act as a guide for early childhood professionals, primary and secondary teachers to incorporate into their daily teaching programs.” Junction Park State School Principal Christine Wood said she was proud of the role her teachers played in bringing the app to fruition.

“Innovations like this will really help our teachers achieve the best possible results for our kids.” “Our teachers tested the technology and provided vital feedback on the requirements of a successful app, as well as featuring in the videos,” Ms Wood said. “We will certainly be using it to help provide regular and fun physical activity for our students and I’m confident that our colleagues in other schools will also see how valuable and

easy the application is to use. Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek said the app would help teachers achieve better student outcomes. “Innovations like this will really help our teachers achieve the best possible results for our kids, and ensure our education system is second to none,” he said. and hommus, or classics such as the 350g T-Bone steak served with Idaho potato and your choice of sautéed greens or coleslaw and vine-ripened tomatoes. Night of nights to honour Moy Sails Beach Restaurant will be the venue for a very special night, in memory of a very special person, on Thursday, March 13.

As part of the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing (March 9-15), some of the best female surfers in history will gather with guests to pay tribute to Noosa’s own beach girl legend, the late Moy Sweetman. At 5pm Sails will present an ‘all-girl shootout expression session’ at First Point, and afterwards host a night with the champions. Seven times world champion Layne Beachley, a regular celebrity guest at the Festival, said she couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate Moy’s life than by getting the champions together and putting on a show. “It’s what she did for other people, despite precarious health. She was a champion in her own right, loved the beach life and surfing culture. We’ll all be out there to catch a wave in her memory.” The Sunshine Coast’s own 2013 world amateur champion Dimity Stoyle, four times world champ Wendy Botha and many other champions will join Layne for the ‘shootout’ before heading across the board-

Having operated in the Lanyana Way arcade for more than five years, Sweet Tempered Chocolateria will now expand to the main street and include a gourmet cafe, while keeping the on-site production of handmade chocolates and cakes in the original store. Owners Dylan and Kate Tasker said they were excited about the expansion and were looking forward to being in a much more visible location, as well as being able to offer more to their customers. The new section of the store opened on Tuesday to reveal a retro-style interior, complete with chocolate brown chairs, a unique chandelier and textures as rich as the dark chocolate truffles. The hand-made chocolates were always popular but a selection of cakes is also available now, including Chocolate mousse cake, Bailey cream torte and Tiramisu, as well as a selection of lunch options, coffee, tea and boutique drinks. According to Dylan, Sweet Tempered Chocolateria chocolates are all you need this Valentine’s Day. “If love doesn’t make you weak at the knees, Sweet Tempered Chocolateria chocolates will,” he said.

READ THE LABEL The RACQ has urged Queensland motorists to read the labels on prescription medications, following reports that one in 15 drivers stopped by police returned a positive drug test.

Driving’ highlighted the need for motorists to know the side effects of the medication they’re taking before getting behind the wheel. RACQ Executive General Manager Advocacy Paul Turner said the spike in positive roadside tests was a concern. “Getting behind wheel after taking drugs, whether they be prescription or illicit can be dangerous and increase the driver’s risk of a crash,” he said.

The Brisbane Roar are streets ahead of the competition in the A league, and Noosa Lions are aiming to do the same thing in the local junior and senior competitions in 2014. For the second year in a row about 100 players recently benefited from the Roar’s winning ways through Brisbane Roar coaching clinics.

Noosa’s Director of Surf Sports Peter French accepted the very generous donation from Vince and Alison Holland of Solarhart, saying: “I am very proud to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Solarhart to not only the boat section but also the club in general. So we thank them most sincerely and welcome them into the Noosa family.’’ “It is traditional in surf clubs to sometimes name the boat after a member who it is considered has made an outstanding contribution to both the boat section and the club,” Ron said.

ISOBEL COLEMAN Noosa Today columnist and surf lifesaving stalwart Ron Lane was more than a little surprised when he helped unveil Noosa’s new surf boat on Saturday.

For the stunning new vessel - donated by Noosa Surf Club’s major sponsor Solarhart – has been named after him. Since 1949 boat racing has been a major part of Noosa’s competition program. It’s had its ups and downs but, a few seasons back, Noosa was rated among the top 10 boat clubs in Australia. Now, with the total support of the club and under the control of

Until he peeled off the cover to reveal the name, Ron Lane Life Governor Surf Boat. “Despite spending three years in Toastmasters, I didn’t know what to do or say. I am totally shocked and deeply honoured and I thank all involved,” Ron said. “As Life Governor I add my thanks and welcome to Solarhart, and to our signwriter sponsors, Saber Signs, who did a wonderful job.”

Incoming Noosa Lions President Brian Stockwell said: “The sessions targeted junior boys, girls and women. We have put down a good foundation in women’s and girls’ soccer and our aim is to strengthen that in 2014 as part of the club’s development plan.” The club has a target to increase the number of female teams this year and for the first time they are aiming to field all girl teams in the U 11, U13, U15 and U17/senior age groups. “We need more players to reach our target and we are holding a special try out session for girls 11 years and older. I encourage girls looking

for a challenge and a fun way to keep fit with friends, and those that have played before, to take the opportunity to come along - and to bring a friend.” Mr Stockwell said. The session will take place at 5pm today, Thursday, Febuary 13. “Last year was one of the Club’s most successful in the junior competitive age groups with five teams getting to the finals and the U12s and 14s winning the first division grand finals. The over 35s also took out the major gong for 2013. This year we would like to see at least one female team added to that list,” Mr Stockwell said. The club caters for players from the U6 Mini Roos to the over 35s. Prospective players can sign on this Saturday and Sunday morning at the Girraween Sporting Complex on Eenie Creek Road. The club has also welcomed Tewantin Noosa RSL Club as a major sponsor of the junior competition, and will soon be announcing a new gold sponsor for the senior men’s teams. Siblings sail to success Sibling sailors Darcy and Seisia Mair have completed the Sabot season on a high. Competing in the junior division of the South Queensland Sabot Association regatta series, the brother and sister pair placed first on handicap and second overall.

Fresh from winning the National Junior Division on handicap in Sydney over the New Year, the duo teamed up again to win all three junior races in the series: the Bay Titles, the Selection Trials and the River Titles.

NOOSA HEADS BOWLS CLUB The Noosa Junction greens got a solid workout during this past week, starting with the Noosa 1500 on Monday attracting a capacity line-up of 96 players. Major prize in this monthly open pairs event went to Danny Keating and John Taylor; second went to Greg Anderson and Thelma Sanday. Winners of the first round losers pool were Steve Chandler and Jenny Smith with locals Terry O’Neill and Garyth Williams runners-up. The next running of this popular event will be Monday, March 3 and there is already a waiting list posted. Another big crowd of bowlers was present on Saturday when Noosa Heads welcomed players in Silver and Bronze divisions of Super Challenge. With the 84 competition bowlers plus another 24 socials, the place was really pumping. To top it all off, both our men and women had good wins in Silver over Club Maroochy and the Bronze men scored over Solander Lake. There’s no doubt lawn bowls is still well and truly alive at Noosa Heads.

Col and Co, Cormorants, CRABs, Eumundi Boys, Galahs, JAY and Co, JeLS, LMB and Royal Flush came out winners. A great night was had by all. In the Hinterland Challenge, the two men’s pairs had wins against Woombye while the triples and fours were unable to match their opponents. The ladies’ triples had a convincing win against Palmwoods while the pairs lost their match. The semi-finals of the B Grade Championships for both men and women were held on Sunday in drizzly conditions. Bodies may have been dampened but spirits were high. The finals are on Sunday.

Our Silver men’s super challenge team, playing at home, again emerged victorious on Saturday when they defeated Mooloolaba 4-131 to 1-91. Our ladies were unlucky to lose the triples, being in front for most of the game. The fours also lost. Scores 0-38 to 2-54. The Gold side journeyed to Rainbow Beach and lost 1-90 to 4-130. Once again Damien won the singles 31-29 and is as yet undefeated. The Bronze team played away at Pelican Waters and did well against a strong one team club. Ron Somerville’s team won the only rubber. We lost 1-75 to 4-175. The ladies played well to lose 0-30 to 2-60. Well done to all our bowlers. It was great to see Dot Abbot return to her duties with Brian Dodd to man the barbecue on Saturday.

The fours team of T Harrison, D Mallett, G Hodder & S Chandler kept up their winning streak with 24-13 win. Softballer Luke makes Aussie squad Game on for ISOBEL COLEMAN Noosa Softball player Luke Thomas was celebrating this week, having been selected for the Australia U17 squad.

The 16-year-old St Teresa’s Catholic College student is no stranger to the big games, having already represented Queensland. Luke has been playing competitive softball with Noosa District Softball Association since he was nine. By 12, he was in the Noosa rep team. Whilst Luke still plays with his home club at Noosa, he also plays in Caboolture’s winter soft-

ball season, as well as the A Grade men’s competition in Redcliffe. He has also attained both coaching and umpiring certification. Luke will be travelling to Sydney in July to play in the International Friendships Softball Series for the U17 Australian Team. And, as a shadow player for the U19s Men’s National Team, he could be called upon to travel to Canada to play in the ISF X Junior World Championships in Canada in July. “I really want to thank my family and friends for all of their assistance, as well as special thanks to my coaches Richard Wakeham and Glen Gorton, for helping me achieve my dream by gaining two National selections,” Luke said.

Resting some players and trying a few new combinations let the visitors sneak a couple of late goals in to level the match but

the squad can take a lot from the game and are looking forward to their next pre-season game against Sunshine Coast Fire. The Fire has just lured Noosa’s striker from last year but they are hopeful of returning the favour with one of their own training with Noosa. It promises to be an entertaining game with lots of attacking play. Locals are welcome to come and enjoy the game from 7pm on Monday, February 17, at Girraween Sports Complex. The Reserve Grade also put on a good showing on Saturday playing out a 1-1 draw against Musgrave. The visitors, however, were too strong for our Coastal Women and U17s.

The 13s had Ashton and Jack hitting home runs, while Mikayla took a fine catch. The 15s were still a bit sleepy after the break but rallied to make it close. Liam moved the team around to give players a go in new positions, including Bayden as pitcher, which will help further down the track. The 17s have not got back to pre-Christmas level yet but Riley hit a three bagger in the 2nd, Jack had a go at pitching as did Chase. Kyle had a good hit to centre to get on base. Last but not least we must mention from week one startled rabbit Aiden who ran to bases, saw the headlights, reacted and ran, only to have the fielders panic and chase him on what should have been an out. He stole all bases in the one play and got home! Thirds pull it off again! MICHAEL SOBEY Day 2 started with the Tewantin-Noosa My Injury Lawyers first grade side looking for an early breakthrough to put the pressure back on the Hawks.

And Bob McGhee produced the goods picking up 5 wickets in the session to have the home team 6 for 170 at the break. Unfortunately the tail wagged and they managed to not only pass the first innings score but post a reasonable 120 run lead before being bowled out. And in a very disappointing effort the batting then folded for a paltry 78 to hand an outright victory to the hosts. At home at Read Park 2nd grade needed to knuckle down to grind out a win. Wickets fell regularly although Don Benstead (71) batted through almost the entire innings and while he was there hope remained. Unfortunately, his was the last wicket to fall just 16 runs shy of the target. It was a much improved performance

by the 2s and one to build on in the last couple of games. 3rds started the 2nd day in great style with Luke Anstey (4/48) picking up 2 wickets in his 2nd over to have the hosts in a world of trouble at 5/70. But with a few of the wickets being the tail sent in as night watchmen the previous week there was still plenty of work to do. A couple of good partnerships were ended by Phil Drescher (4/43) and Reece Langan wrapped up the tail with the last 2 wickets. An outright result was unlikely but a flurry of early wickets saw some pressure back on us in the second innings to be 5/60. But Mick Sobey (91) again steadied the middle order to ensure the win. 5th grade were in the reverse position of 3rds chasing another 140 with 7 wickets in hand. However, with most of the senior bats already in the shed it was too much for the younger brigade who could only manage 127 with Bronson Horn top scoring with 31. The visitors then used the afternoon for batting practice and Wayne Moore and Matt Smalley picking up 2 wickets each.

Top day for Cougars NATHAN MCLEAN In cricket, Cougars U14B team had a much-needed win over a determined Nambour. A series of run-outs and poor shot selection had the Cougars teetering at 8/62 before Dylan Evans and Jamie Gollagher combined for a 20 run partnership. George Giblett 20* and Jamie 15 then added another 23 runs to take the score to a defendable 105. An early run-out by Nick had Nambour on the back foot and they eventually fell 24 runs short. Man of the Match Jamie bowled their top scorer and both Luke and Kurt took 2 wickets with George Hawker taking 2 catches.

It was a tough day at the office for the U16s, who elected to bat. Poor shot selection was the trend of the morning seeing Cooroy bundled out for 98. Tewantin Noosa then went out to bat and after the end of play were 0/130. A more disciplined effort will be required next week to avoid an outright loss. Cooroy C Grade enjoyed a top day’s cricket on Saturday against Coolum. Setting a first innings total of 205, and having Coolum at 2 for 39 after day 1, Cooroy were pretty confident of gaining first innings honours. But Coolum were intent on spoiling the day by batting very sensibly and giving very few chances. After a tense final few overs, Coolum were eventually bowled out for the same total of 205, after a disastrous run-out took the last wicket! Bowling honours were taken by spin-king Mitch Kneale taking 3

for 39, and skipper Rob Plant 3 for 51. It really was an excellent day’s cricket played in great spirits by both teams, and the only fair result was a draw! Neither team deserved to lose this one! Cougars B Grade batted first and was in trouble losing early wickets. Another captain’s knock of 88 by Phil Ilott put Cooroy in a strong position before being bowled out for 203. A spirited effort in the field saw Cooroy dominate, holding onto every chance that came their way. Jake Scanlan was the pick of the bowlers taking 5/59 with Cooroy winning the match by 50 runs. When play resumed on the second day of the Coolum/Cooroy-Eumundi A Grade clash that could possibly decide second spot on the ladder, Coolum required 9 runs to win with 8 wickets down. One of the overnight batsmen for Coolum was absent so in effect, the Cougars required only one wicket for first innings points. It was not to be, however, as the last wicket pair for Coolum added a further 42 runs before being dismissed. This left around 63 overs remaining in the day and the Cougars got off to a solid start in their second innings with opener Aaron Williams (29) and No.3 Joel Kennedy (58) adding 81 for the second wicket. Following a quick fire 27 from the inform Phil Anderson, Cougar skipper Mick Carman took to the Coolum attack and in a frenzied display of power hitting, smashed 57 not out off only 27 balls including 5 fours and 3 sixes which enabled him to declare at 5-205, a lead of 171. With only 25 overs left to bowl, it was always going to be a big ask to bowl Coolum out to achieve outright victory and so it proved with the home team batting out the overs to finish the day at 3-87.

NIPPERS SHINE AT COAST CARNIVALS NATASHA FABULIC Congratulations to the Sunshine Beach U8-U10 Nippers who chalked up strong performances at their last two Sunshine Coast carnivals for the season.

On Australia Day a strong contingent turned out at Alexandria Headlands for the Teams Carnival. The sun shone, the waves crashed down and the Nippers were there in fine form! The Aussie spirit shone through on the day with the team all having a go, doing their best, supporting each oth-

er and, most of all, having fun. Sadly, rough surf conditions saw the board and ocean swimming events cancelled but beach sprints, flags and ocean wade events kept the Nippers busy. Last weekend the teams travelled to Redcliff for the Branch Carnival. This is the grand finale of events where all the skills attained during the season are put to the test against their fellow Sunshine Coast teams. Good conditions meant Nippers were on the go all day with individual beach and surf events as well as team relays and all age relays. All Nippers performed exceptionally well giving it 100 per cent right up to the last race

Outstanding performer of the day was Hamish Jenkins, who won the U9 boys’ board race by a very convincing distance. U9 girls Jasmin Madill-Mason and Cheyenne Dau Paull both finished in the top eight in the boards. Other strong performances came from U8s August Korac, who finished third in his sprint race, and Marlalena Kohl, who placed in the wades. There were great swims by U9 girls Lulu Korac and Freya Wilson, who finished towards the front of the pack in a very competitive field. In the U9 boys, Fergus Fraser got down to the final eight in the flags. In the team events, U8 Eve Ashmore stepped up to do a leg of the Cameron relay with the U9s, while U9 Cheyenne Dau Paull joined the U10 girls to make up a second team for the board relays and put in a very good paddle.
