Kids of ice age MELTON’S youth is increasingly turning to the highly addictive and harmful drug ice according to Melton Police Inspector Stephen Mutton. Insp Mutton told Star the use of ice, also known as crystal meth, is becoming more common among the area’s teenage residents due to its affordability and he admitted that this is having a cumulative effect on criminal incidents. “Ice is the main drug youth are experimenting with, it’s highly affordable and extremely addictive,” he said. “They often turn to crime to fund their addiction.” Insp Mutton cautioned youngsters to stay away from the drug saying users can become “aggressive, violent and irrational” and said it is a trigger for family violence. “People have to understand that if they do this then their life will change and so will their family’s (life). “Behaviourally, financially and physically - it can affect anyone, even the most normal people.

“The public have to be very educated that this drug can fly under the radar, but users won’t even be able to hold down a job.” According to the National Drug Strategy Household Survey in 2010, 2.1 per cent of Australians aged over 14 years had used meth/amphetamines in the previous 12 months, with 50.8 per cent admitting to using ice. Insp Mutton said a large number of crimes committed in the area could be traced back to ice and family violence incidents were often attributed to the use of the drug. He said the key to stemming the growing trend is education in youngsters and offering users a counselling service before the problem gets too far. And he warned traffickers that they would face harsh penalties when caught. “We have a divisional unit uncovering a number of clandestine labs ... we’re targeting drug manufacturers and dealers.” He encouraged anyone who believes there is suspicious activity going on in their area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Warning on arson By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO POLICE are warning would-be arsonists that they will face harsh penalties if caught deliberately lighting fires. The warning comes in the wake of Victoria’s worst fires since Black Saturday and has left Melton Police shaking their heads. Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks said there have been a number of deliberately lit fires across the municipality and while most have been contained, there is always potential for fire to spread and cause injury and property damage.

Sen Sgt Jenks said that on 3 February about 12.10am arsonists set fire to a rubbish bin in parkland in Park Lane, Taylors Hill. The fire was extinguished before the tinder dry surroundings caught fire. Only hours later another group set fire to shade cloth in a playground at Kings Way and Cassia Rd, Melton. And at 1.55am on the same day, arsonists set fire to a pile of rubbish in vacant land bordering residential properties in Caitlyn Drive, Melton West.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact them or ring Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Meanwhile, there has been a recent spate of thefts of late ’90s and early 2000 model Nissan Pulsars in and around Melton and Caroline Springs. Items were stolen from a Nissan Pulsar in Goodenia Way, Caroline Springs on Friday 7 February. And between Thursday 6 February and Friday 7 February a number of Pulsars were broken into in Hampstead Green Botanical Drive, Caroline Springs.

Then on 10 February a Pulsar was stolen from Melton Railway Station and another from Woodgrove Shopping Centre. On the same day would-be thieves attempted to steal another Nissan Pulsar in McKenzie St, Melton. Sen Sgt Jenks said police believe these vehicles are being targeted for no other reason than the offenders’ familiarity with that type of vehicle. One male has already been charged in relation to stealing a number of these vehicles in the Burnside area.

Bullies set to be tackled By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO KURUNJANG Primary School students tackled bullying head on last week with the help of players from rugby league team Melbourne Storm. The visit from Storm players was part of the NRL Community Carnival Tackling Bullying campaign which will run for four weeks and takes Rugby League stars far beyond their backyard in one of the largest community initiatives in Australian sport.

Kurunjang Primary School student wellbeing co-ordinator Wendy McCall said the event was focussed on empowering students and educating them on all forms of bullying. Ms McCall said the school is always looking at new ways to tackle bullying and promote positive behaviour in its students. “When a student’s self-esteem is high, they’re not worried about what other students think,” she told Star. “From Prep they are taught about being good winners and good losers... there is bullying everywhere, at our school we focus on teaching our students to walk away. “We want our kids to have the confidence to walk away and tell a teacher, even though that can be hard to do.” NRL Interim Community, Culture and Diversity General Manager Mark deWeerd said the NRL is in the unique position to make a positive social difference. “Social media means that it’s easier than ever for bullies to target victims and, unfortunately, the problem is increasing every year in Australian schools,” Mr deWeerd said. “We hope to give children the confidence and knowledge to cope with bullying and its effects through the powerful vehicle of rugby league.” Dentists Paul Weiler and Haylea Blundell show 10-year-old Jeremy just how to brush his teeth. 114716

Smiles as dental wait times slashed By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO MELTON residents can now get the new smile they have been waiting for a lot sooner thanks to a significant increase in dental service provision by Djerriwarrh Health Services. The public dental clinic located at Melton Health recently received much-needed funding provided under the National Partnership Agreement on Treating More Public Dental Patients. Chief executive of Djerriwarrh

Health Services Bruce Marshall welcomed the new times saying waiting periods have been slashed by almost a year and even more for Melton’s older residents requiring dentures. “The waiting time for general public dental treatment has reduced from 18 months to seven months while the wait time for dentures has reduced from 18 months to one month,” Mr Marshall said. He also said a dental emergency

service is provided from Melton Health when the clinic is open or from the Royal Dental Hospital in Carlton if the clinic is closed. Patients requiring emergency dental care are seen within 24 hours or 14 days, depending on the nature of the emergency. And the waiting times are set to reduce even further due to the introduction of evening clinics and the use of participating private dental clinics to undertake some of the activity, using a voucher system.

Public dental services are available to all children up to the age of 12 years old, young people aged between 13 and 17 who are dependents of a current healthcare or pensioner concession card holder, and all adults who have a current healthcare or pension concession card. THE EPA is investigating two businesses after receiving complaints from Caroline Springs residents about bad smells. Environment Protection Authority officers have visited Boral Deer Park and Pinegro as part of ongoing investigations into the problem. An EPA spokesperson said a number of potential odour sources were identified at the sites. The spokesperson said the EPA is working with the businesses to find solutions to the potential issues and will issue formal notices reflecting the agreed actions. Caroline Springs couple Steve and Christiana said they have noticed a “stench” in the last few months, but said it is not on a regular basis. “I don’t know what it is but it must be the wind’s direction pushing it towards us,” Christiana told Star. “It’s not on a daily basis - sometimes it is. But it’s horrid.” The EPA encouraged residents to continue to be aware of the situation and said it would rely on the community to help gauge the effectiveness of the solutions.

Skills top-up for senior drivers SENIOR drivers are being supported by RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council with the conducting of the Senior Drivers Expo for senior road users. RoadSafe Westgate Older Drivers program co-ordinator Leigh Hardinge OAM said senior drivers are frequently represented as being involved in a lot of road crashes. It is also often suggested that

they are not involved in crashes but cause them. The evidence tells us that senior drivers are much less likely to be involved in crashes than novice drivers. Monash University research also tells us that senior drivers are not more likely to cause crashes than younger people. The fact that senior drivers, in general, are relatively safe,

doesn’t mean that they can’t improve. After all, it’s a long time since that licence test at age 18! There have been changes in road law and responsible drivers will be aware of these changes and drive accordingly. Phoenix fuming By ADEM SARICAOGLU MELTON Phoenix coach Theo Karapanagiotidis has expressed his disappointment in being placed in State League Four for the upcoming season. Football Federation Victoria last week revealed a draft version of the new state league set-up after 30 clubs were accepted into the newlyformed National Premier Leagues Victoria competitions. Phoenix convincingly won the 2013 State League Five title to earn promotion into Victorian soccer’s fifth tier for the upcoming 2014 campaign. However, after the FFV realigned the state league structure to accommodate the NPL, all of the top eight teams from last year’s SL5 West competition, including Phoe-

nix, are now part of the new SL4 West, which remains the sixth tier in the state. “I’ll be very open about the fact I’ve been very disappointed with how the club’s been treated,” Karapanagiotidis told Star. “Virtually all our success last year really means nothing now because there are seven other sides who jumped up from our league last year, so at the club we’re really shocked and me as a coach, I really can’t believe it. “We believe, at least, the club should have gone up to State League Three.” Karapanagiotidis also highlighted the inclusion of Altona City (last year’s SL3 North-West bottomplaced team) in the new SL2, saying his side has been left behind despite

proving its worthiness to play at the next level. “Altona City have been relegated the last two years and they were supposed to be in our league this year, and they’ve gone back to up State Two,” Karapanagiotidis said. “I’m really shocked because a lot of hard work here at Melton last year has gone to waste, because it’s just virtually ended up a couple of teams shy of the same league, which is just a bit of a letdown. “I would’ve thought we’d at least go to SL3 considering our facilities at Melton, our junior base and supporter base. I would’ve thought we were at least up to SL3 level.” Karapanagiotidis stopped short of admitting his side will play with a chip on its shoulder this season, but the coach is very confident his squad

AFTER nearly four months spent trapped in the Sub-District Cricket wilderness, Melton is finally back on the winners’ list. The reigning premier Lions picked up where they left off on the road to Sunshine on Saturday after bowling the host out for 137 seven

VETERAN Meltonian Graeme Lang was successful with honest home-bred five-year-old Sundon/Make Mine Classy gelding Katmandonny in the Warragul District Light Harness Club Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2205 metres at Warragul last Monday. Driven on this occasion by Rod Petroff, Katmandonny stepped safely from a 20-metre handicap, spending most of the race one/one, with the heavily supported Framed And Hung leading from the 10-metre mark. Easing three wide in the final circuit to be outside the pacemaker on the home turn, Katmandonny had too much quality for his rivals, scoring by 1.9 metres from the leader in a mile rate of 2-06.3, with Morning Fawlty third after trailing the front runner. It was Katmandonny’s seventh victory in 37 outings.

MELTON’S Ian Hunter has his Ponder/Classy Dream colt The Gingerbreadman racing in great form at present, bringing up two wins in succession by taking the Grant Thornton Three-Year-Old Pace over 2150 metres at Bendigo. Driven as usual by John Justice, The Gingerbreadman after starting from the extreme draw was sent forward mid-race to park in the open for the final circuit, before dashing away on the home turn. Although the effort told over the closing stages, The Gingerbreadman held on to score by a head over Stunning Grin (one/ one last lap) and the well supported Admiral Joy off a three wide trail approaching the final bend.
