FIREFIGHTERS have again slammed the gall of people continuing to use the 1000 Steps on days of Total Fire Ban. Despite many warnings from fire crews that those with the feel for lycra and working up a sweat on the stairs to stay away, firefighters were again fuming over the weekend. Upwey volunteer Noel Nealon said cars blocked the side of the Tourist Road on Sunday from 7am, making it hard for fire trucks to get past in the event of a fire. “There were no trucks left at the Upper Ferntree Gully Station and that meant neighbouring brigades would have to try and get people out if there were a fire,” he said. “I was so angry, all local volunteers manned the stations over the weekend and the public can’t do their bit and stay away.” Upper Ferntree Gully CFA captain Peter Smith agreed. “The Belgrave police went down there three times to move people on and book them,” Mr Smith said. “We’re doing a lot of work to educate people to stay away on days of fire danger, and it’s disappointing that we are still having these problems.” Do you agree that the athletic types and fitness fanatics should stay away from the Steps on days of Total Fire Ban? OVER THE last few years, Belgrave has struggled with being a hip haven for locals and tourists to enjoy. In a bid to create a space that is inviting and usable for all of Belgrave as well as the wider community, local couple Suzana Pozvek and Stephen Crombie have rejuvenated the old Ruby’s venue into what is now called Sooki. A creative hub full of music, art, food and drinks, Sooki is not only a space for local and national artists to perform their work – the couple are also opening up their downstairs room for public use. “We like to think of it as a creativity hub for the community, so we have the music aspect of it that includes acoustic and jazz jam nights,” Ms Pozvek said. “It’s also a place for local artists to exhibit their work and we are also offering free space in our downstairs room for anyone who wants to offer belly dancing classes or art classes and so on. Taking over the lease in August 2013, Sooki opened its doors in October last year. “Having such a welcomed response from the community is great because it really shows we have done the right thing,” she said. “That’s what it’s all about, a space that people enjoy and also a space that brings more people to the area.” Ms Pozvek and Mr Crombie both said as locals themselves, they had been frustrated with the stagnant hills mentality that had held the town back from moving forward as a hub for all members of the community. “I grew up in the hills as did Suz and there is a lot of young professionals around the 35-40 years of age (bracket) that are coming back out here because they have kids and things out here are changing,” Mr Crombie said. “There is a hills mentality that has been around for quite a long time that’s slowly breaking down.

Joshua Schwarz has captured the hearts of his Upwey community, with the local footy and cricket clubs coming together to organise a fund-raising day in his honour. He was diagnosed late last year. On Sunday, members of the Dandenongs community came together again to show their

support for Joshua and his family. Organiser Dane Howe the Upwey and Tecoma Football and Cricket Clubs said the day was a success. “Last year, it was fund-raising for the local CFA, this year we’ve decided to do what we can for Joshua and his family,” Mr Howe said. “One of our players mums used to be Joshua’s kindergarten teacher, so that’s how it all started.

“The family aren’t members of our club, but they are Upwey people.” “The support we’ve had has been amazing,” he said. While not able to make the event, Joshua’s mum Penne said she was amazed by the community support. The family is currently on a holiday along the east coast of Australia creating memories for their brave little man.

NSP sign cover-up emergency services. “It’s only a paddock.” Ms Garrett said the CFA attended a community consultation workshop conducted by Cardinia Shire at which community members identified key messages to be included in information and materials produced by the council upon designation and announcement of the NSP. “CFA have requested the CFA logo to be removed for the purpose of clearly advising to the community that the Emerald NSP site is the responsibility of Cardinia Shire,” she said.

“It is also to avoid confusion with the community associating the NSP-PLR as a CFA managed site.” She said while CFA assessed the use of Worrell Reserve as being suitable for an NSP, it was important that community members understood that it should only be used as a place of last resort. “Residents should plan to leave the Emerald area early on high risk days and have bushfire survival plans for all family members, including back-ups plans,” she said.

THE walls are up, the windows in - Emerald’s new police station looks close to opening. But rumours are rife around town that the station will not be manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as promised. Gembrook MP Brad Battin said the station was on track to be fully operational by later this year. “The Victorian Coalition Government is delivering the $6.27 million Emerald Police Station in its first term of government,” Mr Battin said. “The new Emerald Police Station will have the capacity for 24-7 policing in the hills. “Rosters are the responsibility of Victoria Police and I will continue to lobby Chief Commissioner Ken Lay to allocate more police officers to Emerald.” 1116956-PB08-14

Joyriders injured

VISITORS to the 1000 Steps have been told to ensure they look, lock and leave. Belgrave police have reported a number of thefts from cars in recent weeks and say that this is because visitors are either forgetting to lock their cars or are leaving valuables in full sight of would-be crooks.

A COLLISION in Mooroolbark has left five teenagers in hospital after a stolen car they were travelling in collided with a tree. Investigators have been told a stolen Nissan Pulsar was travelling south on Esther Crescent when it collided with a tree about 1am on Sunday. The driver, a 13-year-old boy from Pakenham, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated, before being taken to hospital with minor injuries. The other four passengers - a male and three females aged between 13-years-old and 16-years-old - have also been taken to hospital with minor injuries. The five are expected to be charged with theft of motor car and driving offences.

Drug charges BELGRAVE police have arrested and charged a 26-year-old Rowville man with a number of drug offences after he breached bail conditions. The man will face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

FERNTREE GULLY grandmother Jenny Scott is holding her breath in the hope that drug company Alexion Pharmaceuticals will provide compassionate access to a drug that could save her granddaughter’s life. Last week the Mail reported that Ms Scott was working with local MP Jason Wood to secure the drug, as her granddaughter Bianca couldn’t wait until the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme made a decision on its listing. Bianca, only 17, desperately needs access to a drug called Soliris that could very likely save her from a rare kidney disease called atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome. The drug can cost more than $500,000 a year. And while some Australians have received the drug through the compassionate access program run by Alexion Pharmaceuticals, the program is apparently not taking any new patients.

LaTrobe MP Jason Wood met with the drug company last week, and said he had an honest and upfront discussion with the company CEO. “I understand they are a business and can’t be giving their products away,” he said. “But hopefully the drug will be allowed on the PBS in March - sadly for Bianca, it may be too late for her then.” Ms Scott said that she hoped the company would show her granddaughter some compassion. “She’s a young girl with so much to offer,” Ms Scott said. “This could save her life. We will do anything to fight for her.” Soliris is currently being considered by an independent board to be placed on the PBS. While there are no promises, Mr Wood said if Alexion Pharmaceuticals was to provide compassionate access he would continue to lobby the government for its approval.

POLICE are investigating a serious assault in Yellingbo which took place nearly two weeks ago. Lilydale’s Detective Senior Sergeant Allan Price said police were still looking into the reason for the attack and said police were still interested in hearing from witnesses. The victim, a man from Warburton, is in a serious condition.

LOVE songs performed by the dulcet tones of local singer Marty Rose filled Monbulk Aquatic Centre on Valentine’s Day. Not taking themselves too seriously, the staff at the centre arranged love heart cut-outs to fill the foyer and chocolate biscuits to be served with coffees to greet centre goers on the day of love. Centre Manager Aylie Spence said she thinks a lot of people were feeling a bit down and out about the whole ‘Valentine’s Day’ concept. “Here at the centre we are making a bit of fun about the day but at the same time making it fun for everybody as well,” she said. “What I’ve done in the past is offer bring a friend vouchers for the week of Valentine’s Day but because our classes are already so full we have a card saying ‘Will you be my Valentine’ and people can give it to their friends and bring them any time until the end of the month. “It’s been fantastic, people are just really happy that they can come here have a coffee and listen to some great music.” Valentine’s Day event organiser and membership manager Amanda O’Callaghan said Marty Rose has done a

Push for booze law change By KATH GANNAWAY CONCERNED councillors are calling on the government for a change in the law to allow them to reject liquor outlet applications. Yarra Ranges Council has voted to write to the Planning Minister after councillors were split on the issue of a permit for the sale of packaged liquor at the SupaIGA supermarket in the Olive Tree Shopping Centre. The decision came after four councillors, Terry Avery, Samantha Dunn, Len Cox and Jason Callanan, argued strongly against an officers’ recommendation at a council meeting on 11 February. During a passionate debate councillors weighed up their legal ability to refuse the appli-

cation based on their concerns about the proliferation of liquor outlets, the detrimental effect of alcohol on Yarra Ranges communities and how much council should interfere with free enterprise. Moving an alternative motion to refuse the permit, Cr Avery said Lilydale was “swimming in alcohol”. “Enough is enough,” he said, adding that his reasoning for wanting to stop another liquor outlet in Lilydale related not to the applicant, but to the product. The council report said there were 54 active liquor licences in Lilydale township, the majority for on-premises consumption. It said there were six packaged liquor licences active within 800 metres of the IGA site.

“My reasoning relates to accessibility. Yarra Ranges and the whole county is swimming in alcohol and with so many dispensing alcohol, it’s time to say enough is enough,” Cr Avery said. Cr Jim Child argued, however, for free enterprise saying the alternative motion had no substance. “We’re looking at a licensed premises that has to be in an appropriate situation and this is in commercial one zoning (where) a bottle shop is an as of right and no permit is required,” he said. “We are not here to control free enterprise and competition, especially in a commercial one zone. “If there are problems down there in regard to packaged alcohol, and it’s not consump-

tion, then the relative authorities should take action. “Our role is not to be prohibiting a planning schemecompliant local business,” he said. “Whether we have six, eight or 10 bottle shops is not the issue. I think the day will come when they start going broke... that’s free enterprise.” Cr Cliff supported the argument saying welfare and planning were two different issues and that until the State Government brought in rules that allow the council to regulate differently then the council should not simply refuse an application. “This is free enterprise, he has a right to do it. How dare we,” he said. Cr Dunn said the council

has two legislated roles - health and welfare and land use. “We have those roles, but we can’t link them under the state legislation,” she said. She said there was a need to reduce harm from alcohol in Yarra Ranges and that she had real concerns about as of right use in the planning scheme which did not meet the expectations of the community. “It is a fundamental flaw,” she said. Cr Andy Whitlox labelled the refusal view as “protectionist”. In addition to the original recommendation, the council will now write to the minister seeking an urgent review of council’s ability to consider and assess an over-supply of liquor outlets in an area.

Rotary rattle for CFA A FEW coins can go a long way. A recent tin raffle organised by the Rotary Club of Ferntree Gully to raise money for the Upper Ferntree Gully CFA and Ferntree Gully CFA was a success, with the Rotary club handing over $15,000 to the local brigades. Cash flows to pet pals AN OLINDA animal orphanage is receiving $50,000 from the Victorian Government to help continue to protect neglected or homeless pets. Eastern Victoria Region MP Edward O’Donohue said the grant would be used to upgrade a garage at the Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage and the works will turn it into a model facility for animal welfare shelters. Mr O’Donohue said the Government is committed to supporting not-for-profit organisation in their important work to ensure the welfare of Victoria’s pets is protected. “The Animal Welfare Fund was an election commitment by the Coalition Government, after Labor ignored calls for more to be done to protect companion animals from harm,” he said. Mr O’Donohue said 24 grants totalling $355,000 had been provided from the second round of the $1.6 million Animal Welfare Fund. “The Coalition Government recognises that companion animals are an important part of the lives of Victorians and their welfare needs to be protected,” he said. “Since coming into government, the Victorian Coalition has worked hard to deliver tighter animal welfare laws and crack down on illegal domestic animal breeders.” Nineteen small grants of up to $10,000 and five grants up to $50,000 have been awarded in this round of grants. Disaster grants bring relief home YARRA Ranges Shire residents will share in 200 household emergency relief grants issues since funds were activated for Victoria’s recent bushfires. Federal Minister for Justice Michael Keenan visited the State Control Centre in Melbourne today with Victorian Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Minister for Bushfire Response Kim Wells for advice on Victoria’s ongoing bushfire situation. Mr Keenan confirmed that bushfire-affected residents in 12 local government areas could seek financial help. “On Monday we moved quickly to activate jointly-funded Commonwealth-Victorian Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements which included immediate personal hardship assistance for families, and funding to support councils conducting emergency relief operations,” Mr Keenan said. Mr Wells said funding was also activated at the beginning of the week for clean-up activities, and to begin restoring or rebuilding essential public assets damaged by the fires. CFA, SES are in the dark By KATH GANNAWAY NEITHER the CFA nor the SES has a clear understanding of the number of volunteers they have available, according to a report tabled in State Parliament last week. The Auditor General’s ‘Managing Emergency Services Volunteers Report’ put the effective management by the Country Fire Authority and State Emergency Services under the microscope with some damning findings

including overestimating their emergency response capabilities. A statement released by the Auditor-General’s office on 5 February said while CFA and SES’s volunteers were around 57,500 and 5000 respectively, and despite the significant reliance on volunteers, neither had a sound understanding of the total number of volunteers needed to fulfil their operational requirements. The report found the CFA did not know how many volunteers it needs,

and SES data on how many volunteers it had was unreliable. The report was critical of the organisations’ decentralised approaches to recruitment, training and deployment of volunteers which it said meant neither agency could be assured they were effectively addressing workforce needs. “The CFA is in the process of implementing programs that aim to address these concerns, however, SES attempts to resolve these issues are presently inadequate,” the statement said.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells said on 5 February that the government and the CFA and SES welcomed the report. He said both agencies were already in the process of implementing the recommendations. “I am assured by both agencies that these issues are being addressed, with processes in place even before the Auditor-General’s audit was released, he said. The recommendations include both

organisations evaluate volunteer support systems and processes and explore further opportunities to collaborate with each other, the CFA develop exit surveys to find out why volunteers leave and improve brigade operational skills profiles to reflect volunteer activity and availability, and for the SES to improve Emergency Response Activity Standards - enhanced (ERAS-e) profiles to reflect volunteer activity and availability and align them with its planning cycle.

John Lloyd retired from his position as Ranger in Charge in November 1997 and said he strongly believed domestic and feral cats were causing a problem in the park. The Kallista resident, who is a member of the local Lyrebird Study Group, said he had seen the number of birds reduce over the past few years. “I really have to say I agree with Roger’s (Willsher) comments in last week’s paper,” Mr Lloyd said. “The idea of an exclusion zone is a great idea, plus the idea of people not being able to replace their current cats once they pass on. “The old Sherbrook Shire

was very good and very strong on protecting the park - they even had Japan asking questions about how they could solve similar problems.” Mr Lloyd said that he believed not enough was being done to protect local wildlife. “A Kallista resident actually gave me a call last month, that he saw a litter of kittens right in the middle of the park at 8.30pm at night,” he said. “As soon as he told me, I reported it to Parks Victoria - it’s a concern that they are now breeding there.” Yarra Ranges Council is currently consulting with the community about its cat curfew and off lead local laws. BUSKERS from around the Hills are preparing for the upcoming Belgrave Buskers Festival. This melting pot of local music showcases the dynamic and diverse musical talent of the area. Initiated by Belgrave Traders Association (BTA) in partnership with 3MDR 97.1FM Mountain District Radio in 2012, this annual event was quickly embraced by the community and as a project of the Belgrave Community Arts Partnership. BTA member and organiser of the Belgrave Buskers Festival Marina Dennis said the event was something that the community looked forward to each year. “We start getting entries before we even have a chance to get the word out we are looking,” she said. “It looks like there will be around 40 individuals that will be involved this year in per-

forming and competing. “The idea of having various local artists showcased is that entrants will be able to build their networks and connections. Entrant and 2013 Darren Jones Encouragement Award Recipient Justine Walsh said involvement in the buskers festival was a great place to see all the talent in the area come to life. “It blew me away when I won the award last year as I was not expecting it,” she said. “It has helped me so much with actually taking my music seriously and feeling validated being validated by the community is so important and really, really special.” Ms Walsh said Darren Jones was a musician from the Hills who was tragically killed eight years ago, and added that he had an amazing network and community of friends in the industry. “The idea of the Darren Jones award is the person who receives it is put into contact with those people,” she said.

Runners after puffing record By REBECCA BILLS RUNNERS from near and far are gearing up for Puffing Billy’s 33rd Great Train Race with organisers predicting this will be the biggest year yet. The annual event challenges up to 3300 runners who run from Belgrave to Emerald Lake Park over a distance measuring 13.2 kilometres. The race is one of the longest, oldest and most popular fun runs on the Australian running calendar. It allows runners test their fitness against the popular tourist icon that is Puffing Billy through the varying terrain of the Dandenong Ranges. This year, runner Steve Kelly from North Balwyn is aiming to become the first competitor to win three consecutive races. “I really enjoy participating in the Great Train Race as it’s not every day you have the chance to compete against a steam train,” he said. “There’s also a wonderful sense of community spirit about this unique event which makes tackling those hills that little more bearable. “ Eastern Victoria Region MP Edward O’Donohue attended the launch of the 2014 race and met with this year’s train driver Chris Tasker and Mr Kelly. “Puffing Billy Railway is one of Victoria’s most iconic tourism assets, attracting over 284,000 visitors last year,” he said.

“It supports local jobs and economic activity and is fortunate to have a brand of nearly 1000 volunteers and staff members working hard to make it the fantastic attraction that it is. “The Great Train Race is the annual fund-raiser for the Puffing Billy Preservation Society, so I would encourage everyone to register and help support them in preserving a price of Victoria’s history.” Puffing Billy Railway’s special events manager Matt Collopy said last year entries were fully subscribed within 17 days. “We encourage those people interested in running this year to enter as soon as possible,” he said. LAST November Monbulk Cricket Club (MCC) gained some extra special media coverage for its Ladies Day promoting awareness and funds for The McGrath Foundation. ECO Liquid Waste operates on a simple philosophy - to do the job the way they would want it done. Owner operator Greg Fenby said Eco Liquid Waste doing the job right the first time with satisfaction guaranteed is what makes their service stand out from the rest. “We want your repeat business and the business of your neighbours, friends and relatives,” he said. Mr Fenby studied the liquid waste industry and identified many areas that could be significantly improved - customer service, quality of work and equipment. He has now been successfully running his Knoxfield-based business for around three years and last year serviced Eco Liquid Waste’s 2500th customer. He also welcomed his first employee Tate DeGroot, also a local of the Dandenong Ranges who has been working with the company now for 18 months. “We pride ourselves in providing cost effective, well-maintained and turned out equipment, along with neat, clean, courteous, appropriately trained and accredited operators,” Mr Fenby said. Eco Liquid Waste offers septic tank cleaning, grease-trap cleaning, portable toilet hire and cleaning, car wash pit and triple interceptor cleaning, and prescribed waste transport. “With every septic tank pump out or clean we give away, free of charge a septic tank product pack, consisting of toilet paper, shower and toilet cleaner and laundry detergent that are all safe for septic tanks,” Mr Fenby said. He prides himself on educating his customers to get the best out of their septic tank. “More than 90 per cent of our clients indicated that they didn’t understand how a septic system works,” he said. Eco Liquid Waste’s plant and equipment consists of two trucks and a trailer, and several portable toilets. The newest truck is 3900 litres and is used to places with limited access. Mr Fenby has 19 years of experience in the transport industry as an employee and owner-operator, is EPA licensed, an EPA accredited agent authority, and confined space trained. Mr Fenby was born at Upper Ferntree Gully’s Angliss Hospital, attended Upwey Primary School and Ferntree Gully Tech - his family operated the Mobil petrol station in Upwey from 1956 to 1978. “I am a born and bred local,” he said. A swathe of medals YARRA RANGES Athletes competed at the Victorian State Championships on the weekend, recording many outstanding results. At the end of competition on Saturday, club athletes had earned two gold, one silver, three bronze medals alongside many personal bests. Highlights were gold medals to Lateisha Willis (Under 15 Women 200 metre Hurdles) and Jack Videon (Under 20 Men Long Jump). The day started with an outstanding bronze medal to new club member Sam Gunther in Under 20 Men’s Triple Jump followed by a dominant win over 200metre hurdles by Lateisha Willis. Jack Videon left it until his final jump to record his gold medal winning long jump. At the same time that Jack was completing his final jump,

Aiden Pace crossed the line for his 400 metre bronze medal. Moments later Lily Peacock finished third in her Under 14 Women’s 400 metres. One of the most successful days at a state championship for the club was capped off with an outstanding silver medal to Nathan Hall in the Under 15 Men’s Discus. Sunday produced one silver and four bronze medals. James Laven started the day’s medal haul with an exciting third place in the Under 15 men’s 3000 metres. Lucas Taylor followed with a bronze in Under 20 Men’s Hammer throw matched later by his sister, Lee, in the Under 14 Women’s Hammer Throw. Molly Dixon confirmed a promising 800 metres career with a solid bronze in the Under 17 Women’s 800 metres.

The medal haul was completed with a tense Under 15 Women’s 90 metre hurdles silver medal for Lateisha Willis (her second medal of the championships). All placegetters automatically qualify for selection in the Victorian team to compete at the Australian Championships in March. Little athletics club members have also been finalising the preparations for next weekend’s Eastern Region Athletics Championships. A ‘choose your event’ program enabled athletes to pick the events best suited to their preparations. All athletes took advantage of the conditions to post some exceptional performances. It has become apparent that this format suits Ken Sumsion (27) right down to Mother Earth as he leads the field at +7. Two strokes back and looking like a goer is Ian Scott (30) on +5 with David Jennings (22) two back on +3. The winner should come from these three, but the vagaries of golf decree that it is not over till ‘youknow-who’ sings. The day competition fin-

ished with three players even on +3. Ian Scott’s + 3 deserved to be the top of the heap over-all and in B Grade. Ken Hill’s +3 was the best of the A-Grade crew while Dave Jennings’ +3 was good enough to give him a healthy, self-satisfied glow, but nothing else. Peter Stevens was nearest the pin on the fourth, Ian Cranston the 13th while Ken Hill decided that the spoils of this comp should be his when he was nearest on the seventh, 12th and the pro pin on the 18th. In the ladies Summer Cup it appears that Deanne Shannon has a stranglehold on the cup,

but Davina Mackey’s easy win on the day could propel her into a placing of a superior nature. Wednesday’s Obviously Fabricated Golf (OFG) using the convoluted OFG handicapping system saw a runaway victory to Mick Petrie (32) who came in with a whopping 50 stableford points. With scores of 45 points were Moss Fuller (22), Ken Hill (14) and Ian Scott (31) who were happy with their golf, but found that they were left behind in Petrie’s dust. One more round of par to go to finish the Summer Cup next week.

Moment for ref lection By STEVE BROWN ROUND 12 of the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association commenced with the cricket community still in shock at the senseless passing of young Tyabb cricketer Luke Batty. A minute’s silence was observed at all matches. It was a rare moment when all cricketers were united even if only at the start of a day’s play. At Eildon Park, the home team won the toss and elected to bat against Ferntree Gully in what could be termed a quarter final for the Gully. Sitting just outside the four on percentage, the Blues bowling attack was on song for the first half of the day restricting the Panthers to 6/129 from 46 overs at the interval, Cody Morris still at the crease on 70. The tall opening batsman survived a certain run out opportunity in the first over of the day as both batsmen were stranded at the keeper’s end only to see the ball not gathered cleanly. After the break, the momentum

changed and Morris batted through the innings to register a magnificent 140 not out - his second century of the season enabling the Panthers to pile on 9/263. Eildon Park skipper Cam Cosstick was appreciative of Morris’s knock. “It’s just great having Cody in the team, he’s as solid as a rock and the fittest guy going around - batting another 80 overs today,” said Cosstick. Emerging Knox Gardens opening bowler Zac Flintoff has arrived, claiming his first five wicket haul against Belgrave which rattled up 9/283 as Johnathon Levell produced a timely 120. Seventeen-year-old Flintoff claimed 5/59, however, the Falcons will be tested. Seville’s experience with the ball led by Ishara Amarsinghe (2/46) ensured that Adams did not take the game away from the Blues and eventually the chase came to the last over. With a dozen runs to chase, no one was backing against Adams to get the Crocs over the line. Unfortunately for the Crocs, and the game, Adams was run out trying to gain the strike and with his departure, so too did the chances of the Crocs recording a remarkable victory with the visitors falling 10 runs short. Both sides now enter the run home eager to consolidate home Semi Finals and offer another rematch of their classic 2011/12 Grand Final.

TWO rounds ago, things looked pretty settled in YVCA’s DJ Strachan Shield as the top four sides had cleared away from the bottom four sides. With the top four facing the bottom four in Round 11, many thought that with expected results the finals line-up would be settled. Like all good sport though, nothing is certain and with two rounds remaining the final make-up of the final four and the form of its participants are still well and truly up in the air. With excessive heat forcing the cancellation of day one action, Round 12 was reduced to one day cricket in a crucial day for finals fortunes. On the back of an extraordinary turn in form and fortune, Yarra Junction has found itself perched inside the top four for the first time this season as they claimed another prized scalp this time that of the top-placed Healesville. With Healesville batting first, the Bloods never recovered from the loss of early wickets. Healesville’s season with the bat has been built on strong early batting setting the tone, so when the blow torch was put on the visitors, they were unable to respond.
